Now that the snow flaked shaped dust has settled on the great festive furore, we herald the entrance of a new year, a new start and what promises to be an exciting year both locally and nationally. 2015 sees General Elections, Rugby World Cups, the inaugural family fitness festival GoFest, the Surrey Half Marathon, the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta - and that’s just the tip of the event-packed proverbial iceberg. In this issue we ask you, the reader, your resolutions and hopes for the forthcoming ‘annum’, and a year after the deluge of last winter, we look at what we can do to prevent the pitfalls of extreme precipitation.

The month of January is widely regarded to be named after the Roman God Janus. Depicted with two heads – of which one casts its eyes to the past and one to the future – he/she is the protector of doorways and gates, ensuring you a safe passage from one year to the next.
With that in mind, read on, feel inspired, embrace the moment and let’s get going for 2015. Good luck! Mr D’Arcy

OUR CITIZENS
’ Resolutions New Years This year, we at TG Media solemnly pledge to find the best stories, interviews, events, people and businesses local to you. See? That wasn’t too hard. Of course, most New Year’s resolutions aren’t so straightforward. In fact, they’re a bit like babies: fun to make but notoriously difficult to maintain. So what, if anything, are you resolved to achieve in 2015?
Xenia 61 | Stall Holder They’re so difficult to keep. I don’t make big resolutions every year like, I’m going to lose a stone or run a marathon. If you’re going to make them it’s best if they’re quite small and achievable. I did achieve this year’s resolution which was to get the family album up to date, which was very worthwhile.
Tamas 40 | Chocolatier I usually don’t make resolutions because I never keep them! One for 2015? I don’t know – probably to make more time for myself.
Stephanie 21 | Personal Trainer I actually achieved my resolution of 2014: to train to become a personal trainer. So for 2015 it’s to actually get a job doing what I love. They’re the only resolutions worth making anyway.
Terry 31 | Stall Holder I think everyone makes them but they never stick. With me it’s always ‘I’ll give up smoking’ or something but so far… no such luck.

Titan the Robot | Entertainer My New Year’s resolution? Hmm… probably to ask out that saucy Lexus NX300h I’ve had my optics set on for the last few months. That and to audition for the next Transformers movie. I’d make a great human, wouldn’t you say darling?
Ed 57 | Charity Secretary
I make resolutions throughout the year. I don’t need an excuse to do something or somebody else to tell me something has to be done. For 2015 though, I’d like to learn French. I think that would be good; to have a conversation in French. Un Petit Pois!
David | Gym Owner I don’t make resolutions. I tend to procrastinate so I set my self short term targets and goals instead. I do have targets for 2015: to move to Bermuda and explore the other side of the world. I’ve got a 2 year old boy so I want to spend more time with him as well and focus on quality of life.
Jo 33 | Wine Bar Owner I’ve made resolutions before but they probably only lasted about a month so I don’t make them anymore. They were always about giving something up or getting fit, all those things that make you utterly miserable in January. But for 2015 I resolve to maybe slow down a little bit and prioritise some Me time. If there could just be an extra day in the week that would be awesome.
Ros 29 | Marketing Manager I always make one but I never ever keep it. I made one for my boyfriend last year: to say less, do more. He kept part of it - the do more bit - but he still can’t keep his mouth shut! This year I would like to manage my finances better!

After the Floods A year on, we remember one of the wettest and most turbulent New Years on record… It’s still hard to imagine but a little over a year ago great swathes of Surrey were underwater. Torrential storms experienced over Christmas 2013 and into the New Year saw the Rivers Thames and the Wey burst their respective banks, cutting off communities, damaging businesses, destroying property, and causing havoc to roads and rail networks.
people clearing out their flooded homes and shops on Christmas Day,” she said. However, we must never forget the huge efforts made by organisations such as the British Red Cross and Surrey Search and Rescue, alongside the emergency services, to go to the aid of thousands of residents in often dangerous conditions during that time.
In Southern England, January was the wettest recorded since 1910 and the Met Office suggests that this was one of the most exceptional periods for winter rainfall across the UK in 248 years. It is certainly hard to forget and many people, in Surrey and elsewhere in the UK, are still living with the damage left behind after the waters receded.
Elsewhere in Surrey, it was the towns and villages spread along the Thames that experienced some of the severest floods, including Esher, Walton-on Thames and Chertsey (who could forget the contentious ‘Chertsey Sausage’ that was flung up to protect against further flooding that February.) But it was only last month that Surrey County Council were awarded an additional £60million to further develop the River Thames Scheme and flood prevention measures.
The floods arrived after a succession of severe winter storms that hit the UK over December, January and even the first half of February. Scotland and North East England took the first blows on the 5th December but on 23rd and 24th December a storm brought widespread flooding to southern England, reaching Dorset, Hampshire, Kent and Surrey leaving around 50,000 homes without power over Christmas. The River Wey experienced some of its highest levels in nearly 15 years. More than 160 properties in Guildford, Cranleigh and Godalming were flooded after nearly 2.3in (60mm) of rain fell in one day. In Guildford, Conservative MP Anne Milton criticised the response by the Environment Agency who only released a severe weather warning when the river breached its banks on Christmas Eve. “It was terrible to watch local
It would take until February 2014 for the rivers to finally drop to normal levels and for the enormity of the damage to sink in, and even longer for significant government funding to help the Environment Agency begin to reverse the damage of displaced sand and fallen trees. Overall the December and January storms claimed seven lives and ruined 1,700 properties across England. So while we in Britain are fortunate to inhabit a relatively benign corner of the Earth, it’s clear that nature can always remind us of our vulnerability. We can only try to remember her lessons the next time the heavens open with such disastrous results.

Ten Tips on Avoiding Flooding this Winter What can you do to avoid catastrophe should the sky fall on us again this winter? David Lewis from Grillo LLP Chartered Surveyors in Godalming offers ten helpful tips to protect your property... Ensure gutters and downpipes to buildings are clear of leaves and debris and that gullies and underground drains are free running.
6
2
Check roofs and ensure that missing tiles are replaced and loose flashings are secure.
7
3
Check valley gutters and outlets to ensure they are free from obstructions. A dead pigeon or build-up of debris could block the outlet, leading to a flood inside the building.
4
Check that all your rain water for gullies and patios, drives and paths are all clear and free running.
5
Check that road and footpath gullies and drains are clear of fallen leaves and debris and have been cleared recently by the Council.
1
If you have ditches or a stream running through or adjacent to your property, check that they are clear. If any adjacent stream or ditch belongs to a neighbour or the Local Authority, ensure the appropriate body is aware of any obstructions, and that they organise clearance.
8
If you live near to a watercourse that has flood defences, are they operational? Have moving parts been greased and tested recently and is equipment ready for use?
9
Check your Buildings and Contents Insurance is up to date, adequate and covers you for flood?
10
When was the sum insured last assessed? It may no longer be sufficient.

OUR CHARITY HOTSPOT 2015:
SURREY SEARCH AND RESCUE
Last year TG Media made a commitment to follow local charities, to showcase their tireless work in the community and to highlight the essential support they provide. As we enter 2015 we will continue to work with a charity for the year as well as bringing you all the charity news from your area. This year we will be showcasing Surrey Search and Rescue and the volunteers that run it. Focusing each month on different aspects of the organisation, we’ll talk to team members, dog handlers, the Swift Water Rescue teams and even those who the teams have helped over the years. You may have been aware that Surrey Search and Rescue existed even before the floods that ravaged the county last winter. It is a totally voluntary specialist organisation whose sole remit is to find missing vulnerable adults and children.
The team of over 50 volunteers and 8 search dogs are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Every year some 2100 people go missing in Surrey and the teams are trained to operate in all environments, from woodlands to urban and even on water, to ensure that these people are found and returned safe. Surrey is made up of 642 square miles and most of it is covered in woodland - we are the most wooded county in the United Kingdom. It’s a hard task, but one the volunteers never shy away from. Surrey Search and Rescue was formed in 2010 and is an official member of the UK’s Lowland Rescue Association. The team does not receive any government funding, or any funding from the police or the council. Indeed, they are a charity that relies entirely on donations to procure equipment and other resources. It is these donations that keep the team running, searching and saving lives.

Life of Brians
Purveyors of Politics
We met Brian May in erm, May, and Blessed in December – heroes both. In a year that’s seen us chat to the likes of Jennifer Saunders, Robert Cray, Paul Merton and Newton Faulkner – plus many more – it’s fair to say that this ‘ere magazine and TheGuide2Surrey.com knows how to get a coup or two…
May 2015 will see a general election, and if you want to see those horrible blighters/political saviours get in/stay out of power (delete as applicable) then registering to vote is rather important. Go to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and keep checking back here and TheGuide2Surrey.com for news.
Goodbye GuilFest
Guildford goes Musically International
Sadly it does actually seem like 2014 will be the last GuilFest – but what a final hurrah it was. As second stage sponsors, we chatted, mingled, got some TGTG Offer Cards out there and conversed with yet more celebs. Sam Bailey, Roni Size, Dreadzone and the rest, we salute you!
The biennial music extravaganza that is the International Music Festival comes back to Guildford in March, with a huge variety of acts on offer. In truth there’ll be more than just music, with dance, theatre and visual arts all to be seen. Into Trappist monk freeform jazz? If it exists, it’s likely to be here…
Get Down with the Fitness Surrey Sports Park and TGMedia are Best Buds… In truth, we have been for a while now, but at the end of 2014 we officially became media partners with Surrey Sports Park. What this means is that in 2015 there’ll be a lot more exclusive news, interviews and live match updates from the teams that play there. Splendid!
Ready… Set… GoFest! Speaking of Surrey Sports Park, in July we’ll see it hold the very first GoFest. A weekend long festival of sport aimed at getting us all motivated and find our favourite activity, this event will host more sports than you could shake a hockey stick at. We’ve covered it in detail in these pages, but visit gofest.co.uk for more.
Surrey Half Marathon For the truly dedicated - but what is January for if not to achieve goals like this? The Surrey Half Marathon takes place in March, where you can pound tarmac across the county for over 13 miles for charity, your wellbeing or (ideally) both. surreyhalfmarathon.co.uk has the info.

CELEBRATE THE BOILEROOM
INDEPENDENCE AT
INDEPENDENT VENUE WEEK 2015 TAKES PLACE BETWEEN THE 26TH JANUARY AND 2ND FEBRUARY. GUILDFORD’S BOILEROOM CELEBRATE THEIR OWN INDEPENDENT STATUS BY HOSTING A WEEK OF EXCELLENT GIGS… As many of you will be aware, the Boileroom in Guildford is thriving. At a time when independent venues of any description are in a steady decline, it has blossomed. Now in its 9th year, they’ve hosted some of the country’s biggest artists and some true music legends; Ed Sheeran, Newton Faulkner, Bloc Party – they’ve all been here. And it’s not just musicians, with Mr Nice himself Howard Marks offering his musings to a capacity crowd too. As a local success story- and one that recently staved off a real threat of closure due to noise complaints the Boileroom will be partaking in Independent Venue Week. This year sees modern folk hero Frank Turner taking over the mantle as Ambassador from Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood. Independent Venue Week is a 7 day celebration of small music venues around the UK and a nod to those that run them. These venues give artists their first experience of playing live in front of an audience and for fans to get up close to artists that may well be playing stadiums and festival main stages. The Boileroom will be hosting a number of gigs throughout the week, kicking off on Tuesday 27th with a local label showcase, with acts from Failure By Design, Rose Coloured and Lockjaw celebrating all things independent. Wednesday 28th will see “fun, self-deprecating indie from Sunderland” courtesy of Frankie & the Heartstrings. These Ghosts take to the stage on Thursday with their “enigmatically gorgeous and unsettling” sound. Finally Sunday 1st February sees JP Cooper’s soulful sound – heavily championed by Radio 1 – round off the week. Many other acts are to be confirmed!
To find out more about what to expect at the Boileroom during Independent Venue Week, visit www.theboileroom.net
BOILEROOM HELPS MUSIC CHARITY HIT A MILESTONE Congratulations to the Boileroom for becoming the 100th venue to sign up to music charity Attitude is Everything’s Charter of Best Practice, which offers improved accessibility at live music events for deaf and disabled fans. The Charter of Best Practice is designed to encourage event producers to go beyond the legal obligations set out in the Equality Act and implement best practice that provides a fair and equal service to their deaf and disabled customers. In 2013, more than 70,000 disabled people attended venues and festivals signed up to the Charter. The Boileroom joins the likes of Glastonbury, Reading Festival, The O2, The Roundhouse and Brixton Academy in being recognised for its commitment to attracting and welcoming disabled audiences. JANUARY 2015
For most of us, going a day without a good cup of coffee is unthinkable. It’s not just about the caffeine - although we doubt we could produce this magazine without a steady stream of coffee bean fuelling us. But the joys of a freshly brewed coffee can all be found in the flavour. Unlocking the subtle caramels, chocolates, florals and fruit tones inherent to coffee all comes down to the brewing method, and while there are dozens of gizmos and techniques out there, we thought we’d explore the most common ones – and a couple more unusual – to discover what goes into the perfect brew. ESPRESSO MACHINE Espresso coffee machines come in all shapes and sizes and at all price levels. But the method for perfect espresso remains the same for most. The important factors involved in making espresso with a machine are: THE COFFEE – Quality is king, but only use coffee within three weeks of grinding, whether you grind your own beans or not. Dark roasts tend to be more complex, with chocolate and caramel flavours; lighter roasts are more fruity and floral. THE DOSE - A traditional Italian 30ml double espresso is made with a 14g dose. TEMPERATURE – The optimum temperature for producing espresso is between 92C and 96C. EXTRACTION AND THE GRIND – You’ll want to aim for 30 seconds to extract - that’s 30 seconds between switching the water flow on and off again. Any longer and the coffee will be bitter.
THE POUROVER METHOD This is a quick, time-tested method of brewing coffee from Japan that has seen a resurgence in recent years. And perhaps the finest purveyors of Pourover Drip Coffee in Surrey are the award-winning Pinnock’s Coffee Shop in Ripley. Co-owner of Pinnock’s Russell James says: “When you’re making coffee with the Pourover method, you’re extracting all the flavours, all the subtleties and the interesting notes within.” FOLLOW RUSSELL’S METHOD FOR PERFECT POUROVER COFFEE • When your kettle has boiled leave it for about three minutes to let the temperature fall to about 93-95 degrees. This prevents the water scalding the coffee. • Place filter in a drip cone (plastic, china etc. available from many kitchen stores and online) above a cup or mug. • Wet the filter with hot water. This removes the paper taste. Discard water. • Measure out 20 grams of medium ground coffee and place in the filter. • The ‘pre-pour technique’: Just cover the grounds with enough water then ‘agitate’ the coffee by stirring gently. This begins to extract the flavours. • As the water starts to go down, pour more straight into the centre. It will balloon a little like a chocolate soufflé. As this sinks agitate it some more. • A final pour to extract the rest of the flavours and you’re done. For the real deal, head over to Pinnock’s Coffee House, High St, Woking, Surrey GU23 6AF. STOVETOP ESPRESSO MAKER Can’t afford an espresso machine but still desire a rich, concentrated coffee with an espresso-like crema? Then you need one of these stovetop –or Moka- espresso makers. They produce coffee by passing boiling water pressurized by steam through ground coffee. They’re cheap, simple to use, easy to clean and take up very little room. A real coffee mate.
CAFETIERE Another affordable and very reliable coffee maker, a cafetiere rarely lets you down. Use only coarse ground coffee and boiled water that’s been left for a minute or two. A pour and a good stir and then the only hard bit: leave it for a minimum of four minutes before pouring – not a minute less. You can wait four minutes, right?•
IF YOU HAVE TO MAKE INSTANT… • Use high-quality instant coffee. Use a rounded teaspoon to start with, but experiment with quantity from there. • Fill the kettle with bottled, filtered or purified water. • Turn off the kettle just before it reaches full boil. • Pour a teaspoon of water over the coffee and stir and crush into a paste. This is the moment to add any sugar to the mix. Stir well and continue to fill with water. • Add cream or milk and continue to stir well. Posh up your coffee even further with a dash of syrup and even a dusting of powdered chocolate or cinnamon.

Talking to - The Naked Grocer Chris Bavin is on a mission to return the local greengrocer to relevance on the high street once more, with his award winning shop in Walton-on-Thames, the Naked Grocer. He also presents BBC One’s family food programme Eat Well for Less? alongside Masterchef ’s Greg Wallace. We caught up with Chris ahead of the programme’s return early this year. What do you do? I have a high end greengrocers in Walton called the Naked Grocer. I also import fruit and vegetable for a company called Pacific Produce. Alongside that I have done a tiny bit of TV , some key note speaking and retail consultancy. I have been a Greengrocer in the literal sense for 5 years, but have been involved in the fresh produce industry for 18 years. What makes the Naked Grocer in Walton-on-Thames different from other food shops? We have tried to take all that is good from a traditional greengrocer and give it a modern twist. Great customer service is at the core of everything we do, supporting local growers and the community we are in (winning the Contribution to the Community Award for Elmbridge last year). You opened the shop in 2009 during the height of the recession and when similar independent businesses were in decline. It must have felt like a terrible gamble? Yes very much so. Starting any business is a big gamble especially in a sector that has known to be strolling and in the worst recession the UK has seen for a very, very long time. But I was confident that if the offering was as good as it can be -offering top quality fresh fruit and vegetables at low prices - you will always do ok.
Do you ever see the ma jority of the public turning away from the supermarkets in favour of small, independent grocers once again? I don’t think we will ever turn the clock back completely, and I am not anti-supermarkets at all. But I think spreading your weekly shop around not only makes good financial sense but will also do wonders for your local economy. How did you get involved with the BBC and the programme Eat Well for Less? I got a phone call out of the blue from a researcher at RDF television and they were looking for people to give some opinions on a consumer show. After meeting a few times we looked at the possibility of making a food show which the BBC really liked, and the rest as they say is history. Eat well for less? is a show that looks into families’ shopping budgets and how they can be reduced without compromising on quality. Where has this series taken you this time and what surprises did you uncover? We worked closely with 3 families in different parts of the UK, and then through that we went off to investigate some of the alternatives we were suggesting, leading to some very interesting findings. Finally, what are your New Year’s Resolutions? To try and spend more time with my family and get a better work/life balance.
Visit the www.thenakedgrocer.com for more information. Eat Well for Less? returns to BBC One in early 2015.

Upcycle
JANUARY 2015
/ˈʌpsʌɪk(ə)l/
By Alex D’ Arcy
verb 1. reuse (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original. “the opportunity to upcycle trash, or turn it into new products, was vast” As per the definition above, Upcycling is the practice of improving upon that what you already have or what has already been produced; whether it be transforming your withered dining room table or creating something completely new from old. Check out our Pinterest board online (pinterest.com/Theguide2surrey) for some great examples that have tickled our fancy and are a great source of inspiration for budding upcyclists… No doubt about it - we consume. It could be said that our consumption of daily and household products could be catastrophic; in our consumption of household items are we not adding a burgeoning hole upon our current resources, and indeed mother earth? Compared to our neighbouring countries on the continent, the carbon footprint of the UK is the size of the BFG’s end of year party attendees dancing Gangnam style in Peter Rabbits vegetable patch. So, in the words of a well-known super conglomerate retailer – every little helps.
Here at TGHQ the idea of becoming a carbon neutral country is a notion we hold dear to our hearts – so quit your dilly dallying and let’s start with self…
Getting Started Once you’ve decided that upcycling is going to be your new hobby / way of life, you’ll need to decide upon what it is you exactly want to upcycle. Eventually you’ll come across something in your homestead that isn’t looking the sharpest and could perhaps do with a new lease of life; great – your first item! See next sections on ‘courses’. If however, none of your personal effects are in need of repair or sprucing, then the next step is to source your materials. Now let’s be clear; the idea of upcycling is a) to improve on something that already exists and b) to spend as little as possible in the process.
Here are some handy sources for finding your next favourite piece of furniture FreeCycle – most towns will have a local Freecycle website whereby you can go and collect household items for free from other users. Check out www.freecycle.org to find your local group. Charity Shops with furniture – A fantastic source of unwanted furniture and bric-a- brac at a fraction of the cost, all the while giving to charity. See the DEBRA in Guildford or Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice shops. Freegle – Don’t throw it away, give it away! That’s the motto of website Freegle. Not dissimilar to Freecycle, another great online community of users giving their unwanted items away. Furniture Link – Based up at Cathedral Hill and part of the charity Guildford Action, FurnitureLink reuse, recycle and refurb unwanted items. They’ll even collect the items you don’t want for a small donation. See www.furniturelinkguildford.com.

Courses To take on this task we may need to add a few more strings to our creative bows along the way and there are a variety of course out there for you to try your hand at – not necessarily upcycling specific courses, more teachings to improve one’s skills so that we can be champions of the upcycle. We want to produce the prettiest of finished articles, do we not? Find below a selection of workshops and courses to get you going.

By Alex D’Arcy Smouldering browns strewn with scratches and spatters of everyday life; the aesthetics of an aged and vintage leather garment tells a story in its own right. Like one’s life, no two can tell the exact same tale. This is the beauty that professional up-cyclist and eco conscious accessories designer Rebecca Jane wishes to convey through her design of unique leather bags and accessories, created in her workshop in the idyllic setting of Smithbrook Kilns. We caught up with Rebecca to find out more. TG: Why did you decide to start working in this sector? RJ: I used to work for an accessories designer called Paul Seville who used the traditional techniques of working with leather like hand-dying and embossing and I think through working with him that I just fell in love with leather. I’ve always loved recycling and upcycling. I combined my skill set and interests into one to form the company. TG: What has been your greatest challenge to date? RJ: Probably when a Japanese agent spotted my work. I used to do markets in London and there were always people scouting around saying that they were big buyers and nothing ever really happened. Then I was approached and asked if I wanted my bags stocked in Japan and the next thing I know I’ve got the Paris agency on the phone asking for samples ASAP. I was a one woman band at that time and I had to employ seamstresses to come

and help me fulfil collections, working with companies abroad and the whole logistical side of things. TG: What key skills do you consider contribute to your success? RJ: Hard work! Obviously pattern cutting, appreciation of leather materials and how they all work together. As well as an eye for design, keeping up with current trends and being a businesswoman. The biggest thing is determination, hard work and seeing it through. TG: What motivates you? RJ: I love being my own boss and having my own business. I love materials and the aesthetics of what I do. I’m turning old discarded materials into these new modern bags that then have a whole new life to them. I think it’s a really exciting journey.

STAYING DRY Stay dry and keep alcohol free this January to experience the many benefits of sobriety.

Y
es it is raining outside, but we’re not talking about that, so put that umbrella down and absorb the details below. You might find it sounds like a good idea.
December was a fun month right? Family gatherings galore and a bottle of your favourite Alpine distilled Absinth that made you feel like you were Mike Tyson at the time but perhaps, more like Mary Poppins the morning after? We know that temptations are many and excuses not to go out are few and far between. So if you feel like you need a little rejuvenation - maybe a little hiatus from the hops - then there is something “oh so simple” you can do.
Dry January Dry January is a campaign instigated by those good folk over at Alcohol Concern. Ultimately it is set up to raise money for their fine charity, but also to encourage some kind of detox in the aftermath of the party season. For those of you wishing to take part, this is a self-imposed exile from the pubs and alcohol aisles of supermarkets, which could ultimately save you some sterling, perhaps lose you a few pounds (weight) here and there and in turn provide you with an exuberance and energy that maybe had lost its way in the past month. Visit www.dryjanuary.org to actively take part and raise money.
Did you know? Alcohol is a depressant - fact. Alcohol is the most used drug in the UK after tobacco. That’s right – it’s a drug. Somewhere along the line there is going to be some kind of physiological affect which, in turn, will affect your well-being and ultimately the YOU that we used to know.
Want to talk about it? On a serious note, if you think that you are drinking too much and feel that talking to friends and family may be embarrassing, problematic or indeed uncomfortable then there are a number of fantastic organisations based in the area that have one thing in mind - listening / talking / helping you. It might be the best thing you do today. drinkaware.co.uk

GOFEST... Also in attendance will be former England International, and GoFest ambassador, Kevin Keegan, who’s bringing an activity of his own along too – ‘Sokka’. ‘Sokka’ is a 45 second long footballbased activity that can be played individually or against an opponent. The aim is to kick the ball wherever the light on the board in front of you signals, gaining points each time. It’s designed to not only improve your footballing skills, but offers an enjoyable activity, something Keegan believes is vital:

By Tayler Willson
“With ‘Sokka’ you don’t realise how much work you’re putting in. You don’t realise just how active you are in such a small playing area. I agree that exercise can be dull, but that’s what we need to change. If you aren’t enjoying your activity, do something else, there’s a sport for everyone.” So, do you fancy skiing in Guildford mid-summer next year or doing a spot of yoga before enjoying some night time entertainment then heading back to camp? Thought so.
“The thing nowadays is that kids, and even adults, don’t enjoy their exercise. It’s seen as a chore and something that can wait and then usually avoided.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ ABOUT ENERGY DRINKS?
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Sport
As it’s January many of us will be hitting the treadmill and grabbing any old sugar-loaded drink to refuel. But we should always consider what we put in our bodies… I don’t there’s been a day gone by that I haven’t been mooching around town and not seen someone clutching some form of energy drink. Everyone - but particularly young people - seem to live, thrive and survive on the stuff. Saturday night’s out sees an unfathomable amount of shots and cocktails built around them. There’s a dizzying array of brands out there at the moment; some well-known names and supermarket’s cheap alternative. The fact is they’re everywhere – but why are they so well-liked? And what’s the effect of drinking these bubbly brews?
Why so popular? Well according to research done by the NHS, some 30-50% of teenagers in England and Wales drink energy drinks. They are advertised in such a way that we are lead to believe that they will improve your physical and mental performance, boost your energy and keep you awake for longer. It’s easy to want to buy into this; as a teenager, I needed around 40 pounds of PE4 placed under my bed to get me up. But what’s in it? Ingredients are different from brand to brand, but the key ones are:
U Caffeine - our faithful friend. This stimulant takes around two hours to wear off and gives you an instant boost. Drink too much and you get the shakes, feel anxious, get increased blood pressure and - given the right amount - get the squits. Nasty.
U Then there’s all the ingredients that sound
like a 70s prog-rock band: Guarana, Taurine, L-Carnitine, Ginseng, and Yohimbine. Not enough research has been done into the effects of these ingredients, alone or when mixed together, but what little data that’s out there is saying long term use can play merry havoc with your health.
What are the Potential Effects of me Drinking this Stuff? Some energy drinks taste great and everyone likes a dose of instant energy; however some of these bad boys contain as much as three times as much caffeine as a can of cola. So we’re back to all those symptoms we chatted about earlier, plus increased blood pressure and disturbing the rhythm of your heart (which might increase your chances of a heart attack, stroke or even kidney disease). Last year in December, researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany studied the hearts of 17 people an hour after they had an energy drink. They found that their subjects had “Intensified heart contractions”. No mention of diarrhoea though. Every cloud…
What about Alternatives? Eat a high energy snack like a banana or try drinking some water. It’s what your system was designed for; you wouldn’t put diesel in an unleaded car would you? There really is no secret other than what you know: eat healthily, exercise regularly and get a good night’s sleep instead of watching Top Gear or Kardashian reruns into the small hours…

SEASON PREVIEW SURREY STORM By Tayler Willson WHERE THEY PLAY:
Surrey Sports Park (Capacity: 1000)
HOW DID LAST SEASON GO? After winning the league campaign unbeaten, plus reaching the grand-final, you could say last season was a roaring success. However, losing the final at the death, after leading for the entire match, was a bitter pill to swallow.
WHAT ARE EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS SEASON? The only improvement that can be made on last year is winning the grand-final. With their finger-tips on the trophy only recently, this season has to see the Storm crowned champions
KEY FIXTURES: HERTFORDSHIRE MAVERICKS – 7TH MARCH MANCHESTER THUNDER – 14TH MARCH TEAM BATH – 17TH MARCH
MANAGER: Tamsin Greenway. The 31-year-old player-coach has enjoyed success in the past and has been in the England set-up since 2004/05. She’s competed in two commonwealth games (2006 and 2010), collecting bronze at both.
More information can be found at
SURREYSTORMNETBALL.CO.UK
Greenway has previously played for Team Bath and Queensland Firebirds in the Australasian ANZ Championships.
PLAYER TO WATCH IN 2014/2015: Rachel Dunn. The 6ft 2” Goal-shooter has, like Greenway, been part of the England squad since 2004/05 and has also appeared in two commonwealth games (2006 and 2010). Dunn is known for her pin-point accuracy and Storm fans will be hoping to see points on the board courtesy of her.

Talking to...Pam Cookey The end of January sees the start of the netballing season, with Surrey’s very own Surrey Storm amongst the favourites to pick up silverware this campaign. Last season saw Storm miss out on victory by a last minute winner against Manchester Thunder to make the final score 4849, leaving them Superleague runners-up for the third time in four years. This time, out Storm are confident that they can go one better. We spoke to returning Surrey Storm captain, and captain of the England national team, Pamela Cookey, on her expectations for the forthcoming campaign… How is it to be back at Storm after a brief spell away? I’m really excited to be back. There are some old faces and some new ones too, which is always good to see. The season doesn’t start until the end of January, but still, even now, we’re all looking in great shape. Will this be the season Storm get their hands on the Superleague? I’m confident we can get to the final and win it this time. There’s no doubt in my mind we’re good enough, so as long as we stay focused and on-point, then we can do it. Surrey did a really good job last season and were so close in the final. I hope I can help push them on to do one better this year! You’ve captained England at all sorts of world stages, what’s that like? It’s such an honour to represent your country, but to captain it is something else entirely. It’s a privilege. We have a superb set-up for the national team, which makes my job, as captain, a lot easier. It also adds that extra dynamic to my game. I’m not just going onto court and playing for myself, I’m leading my team, my country and that’s made me a better all-round player. What’s it like to have Surrey Sports Park and its facilities at Storm? The sports park is amazing. You’ve only a handful, really, at such a high standard around the country. You’ve got the sports hall that has three courts, you’ve got the gym upstairs, you’ve got everything. There are so many elite sports teams there with badminton, rugby, basketball etc. It’s a superb place to be and an incredible up-beat environment. The staff are amazing too, it’s great. Surrey Storm’s campaign kicks off at home, on 26th January aginst Manchester Thunder. Visit surreystormnetball.co.uk for tickets.

BUSINESS
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Business
NEW YEAR, NEW CAREER The beginning of another year arrives with huge potential for personal development and opportunities to progress in our lives. For many, the New Year offers the potential to improve relationships, take up new hobbies or dust off old ones and to reassess our values and what matters to us as we forge ahead into the next twelve months. But perhaps the most significant goal many aspire to is finding a new career or progressing in their current one. If you’re unsatisfied in your current job or yearn for a more challenging or creative vocation, consider these tips as you seek more rewarding pastures in 2015.
STAY POSITIVE Anyone who’s experienced jobhunting before will remember what an exhausting and often dispiriting endeavour it can be. It is even becoming common for many companies to not inform applicants that they haven’t been successful and not to take it personally. However, maintaining a positive mental attitude is crucial when it comes to your own resolve and how employers perceive you. Believe in your skills and your worth and others will too. The process of job hunting, even if it ends up drawn out over some months, still provides valuable research and networking within the industry you want to enter or progress in.
BRUSH UP THOSE SKILLS A little patience can bear fruit, so maybe rather than knocking on doors and emailing CVs straight away, consider taking some time to obtain the skills in areas you feel you are lacking or that are required by the job you’re after. Almost anything can be studied at community colleges, correspondence courses or over the internet and you can never have too many skills.
PREPARING FOR INTERVIEWS There are great resources for dealing with interviews out there but common mistakes include dressing down, not planning an efficient journey to reach the interview and a lack of research about the company you’re applying to. Avoid those and focus on anticipating the key questions the interviewer may ask you: what your strengths and weaknesses are, what you bring to the job, what interests you about the company and position and what your previous experience and skills have to offer them. Be sure to include specific examples, they are not looking for what you would do – but what you have done. It often impresses interviewers if you prepare a few questions of your own about the position.
BE PATIENT It almost always takes longer for the right job to emerge than you imagine when you’re standing at the gateway to a new year, one that’s carries your hopes and ambitions with it. But while fortune may favour the bold, it’s the patient who ultimately reap the rewards. Be realistic, be resilient and be thorough and 2015 may yet be the year that you find your dream job.
TUNE UP THAT CV Your curriculum vitae is your career biography, passport and shop front all in one. A good CV should be informative, but to the point. Make sure to highlight your primary responsibilities, key achievements and strengths in an easy to read bullet format. Don’t forget to include any transferable and key skills to help you stand apart from the herd. Also, a CV shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all document, but rather one that you tailor specifically to every job you apply for.

Describe your business in no more than a dozen words? Independent communications provider of IT/broadband solutions primarily to the construction industry.
Name: Beth Michael Profession: Personal Trainer Company: Shapesmith Based in: Guildford Website: www.shapesmith.co.uk
Why did you decide to start working in your sector? While I was in the British Army, I was often posted to remote locations and, in an age where the internet is so fundamental to day-to-day life, it got me thinking about how businesses survive in areas where broadband is not available. When I left the army, I developed Office in a Box, it provides super-fast broadband to 90% of the UK in under 10 days – it’s tailor made for the construction industry who usually start on site with no facilities in place. Now they can have an office set up virtually immediately – essential for ordering supplies and liaising with all their agents, suppliers, architects, planners etc.
I now visit large business to explain the benefits of employing ex-forces personnel.
To date, what has been your greatest success? Apart from actually getting our business off the ground it’s been winning the contracts with some of the biggest house builders in the UK such as Barratt and Linden Homes as well as some of the smaller developers such as Burton Homes.
What motivates you? Growing the business and showing people that, with the right mind-set, you can take your business as far as you want.

Describe your business in no more than a dozen words?
To date, what has been your greatest success?
Personal Trainers that deliver real fitness and nutrition expertise to transform health.
My greatest success has been building a thriving exciting business which I love on just word of mouth. My business is growing bigger and stronger every day.
Why did you decide to start working in your sector? I have always enjoyed sports and been interested in nutrition. I wanted a career that encompassed these passions and became a personal trainer 4 years ago.
What has been your greatest challenge? My greatest challenge was leaving my friends and family in Cornwall to start a personal training business in Guildford from scratch. All I left Cornwall with was passion and motivation to help others become what they thought was impossible.
What key skills do you have that have been key to your success so far? Determination: to train at a high level you need to be determined and focused on your aims. Enthusiasm: I love what I do and I love helping people become fitter and healthier. that stuff. I loved the food and the culture and I thought I could do a good job bringing the food to the high street. I set up Turtle Bay four years ago to do just that. I like doing things other people don’t do and I feel very lucky to be able to do so.
Why has the brand been so successful? It’s a number of things. It’s fresh food and demystifying where that food comes from. The second thing is that the Caribbean is a great source of inspiration. Think music, sports, rum, style, hot sun: it ticks a lot of boxes for such a small set of islands. In that sense it’s the perfect source of inspiration for the high street.
How did you start out in the restaurant business?
Why choose Guildford for your next restaurant?
Well basically I did an economics MBA degree and worked in the city for some time, then in the early nineties I got made redundant and so I started Las Iguanas (Latin American restaurant) with a £10,000 loan from my university bank manager. So restaurants have been my background for the last twenty years or so, I guess.
I’d been looking to open a restaurant here for almost six years. We have friends in Guildford and we come here quite a lot. Finding a restaurant space was quite difficult – it’s a thriving town but there’s a lack of supply [of premises]. But the old Slug and Lettuce space became available and we thought we’d have a go at it.
How did you come to set up Turtle Bay? I used to go to the Caribbean a lot, to visit family and go to the festivals and eat in Brixton; all
What lessons have you learnt since opening your first restaurant? I think knowing what you want
to achieve is the hardest thing. There’s no science to it; there’s probably art and intuition to it. Knowing what the experience you want your customer to leave with is the hardest thing. It’s quite easy to open a restaurant but the most important thing is to understand your customers.
So what are the qualities that are vital for a restaurateur? You’ve got to have a boundless amount of energy and be available all of the time. You should never think of it as work; you should think of it as something you love doing. You’ve got to be disciplined and be able to motivate and get the best out of people. It’s the people that make a restaurant what it is, ultimately.
Finally, what does Turtle Bay bring to Guildford? There are quite a few independent restaurants and a few branded restaurants, but we bring something different. A place where you can go where the drink is good and the food is good. We’re spicy and we’re exciting and we’re designed for people who don’t feel like clubbing but just want to combine good food and drink together however they want to.

Best in BUSINESS person who says he doesn’t make mistakes is the one who doesn’t make decisions - or they’re a liar.
Although you left Dragon’s Den in 2013 do you still keep in touch with the other Dragons? I keep in touch with all of them. We all had dinner a couple of weeks ago. I spoke to Duncan (Bannatyne) on twitter this morning. I own Red Letter Days with Peter (Jones) so we have regular business meetings.
Do you miss the programme?
Name: Theo Paphitis Profession: Entrepreneur Company: Retail Empire - Robert Dyas, Ryman’s Stationer’s
Boux Avenue and Red Letter Days among others
Website: www.theopaphitis.com
Boux Avenue is your latest business venture and the third (after La Senza, Contessa) lingerie company you’ve launched. What tempted you to invest in this sector again? All of my businesses are specialist retail businesses. We know this sector really well and we sold La Senza in 2006 – a long time ago. But we’d had the lingerie experience and we asked ourselves if we could design the ultimate lingerie shop, what would it look like? We thought let’s go for it, it’s either going to be a quick failure or a good, long success. Kingston is store 25 (in the UK, with 10 overseas). It’s just really taken off.
How does Boux Avenue stand out in such a competitive market? All shop keeping is competition, it always has been. But for us, we know this sector and this is a service that’s all about the customer – where the changing rooms have three different light settings, the concierge service, the wrapping. We’ve created a luxurious, grand, opulent service that’s affordable, in a sector that’s very personal. It’s all about the experience.
What has been the most useful mistake you’ve made in your career? Ah, I’ve made loads of mistakes. I continue to make mistakes except I get more right than wrong. The
I did in the beginning when they started filming and they were winding me up on twitter about not being there, but I got over that. After eight years it was time to move on. I launched Boux, bought Robert Dyas and some other businesses and there’s only so much time in the day. I needed that year off to get my businesses back and continue expanding.
You’re a vocal champion of small businesses (Small Business Sunday, SMARTA). Is the Coalition Government doing enough to support independent entrepreneurs and SMEs? Well successive governments realise the importance of small businesses but there’s only so much they can do. I’m a realist. We have to do it for ourselves as well. To be in business you have to be a self-starter. So it’s not all about government; all they can do is put the correct environment in place. It’s how we help ourselves.
What do you enjoy most about living in Surrey? It’s marvellous, especially where I live. I live in the countryside and I’m a stone’s throw from London; I’ve got the best of both worlds and I can’t think of a better place to live.

Not in College or at Work? If you’re aged between 16 and 18 and not in education or work this January, Guildford College and Merrist Wood have a way to get you back on your feet… Let’s not beat around the bush – the world that our parents lived in, where qualifications were a bonus rather than a necessity, is all but gone. Some people will be lucky enough to know a contact who can help them get a job, or will perhaps be able to carry on the family business; but for the ma jority looking for a good career, certificates are key. This is where Guildford and Merrist Wood Colleges come in. If things haven’t worked out the way you hoped - maybe the College or course you originally chose wasn’t for you, or you haven’t been able to find the perfect job - then don’t worry! For these excellent educational centres are offering you 16 to 18 year olds a second chance to kick-start your career. Guildford College is the largest further and higher education college in the area; there are approximately 10,000 students and hundreds of qualifications on offer. They have the following courses starting in January 2015 to help get your life back on track:

All of the below are still available to start right away should you want to carry on where you left off, or start to carve yourselves a new path. If you’re more agriculturally inclined, then Merrist Wood is for you. Located away from Guildford town in 400-acres of Worplesdon farmland, this is the perfect place for those of you interested in land-based industries. In January Merrist Wood still has courses in Landscaping, which covers the basic principles of hard landscape construction including fencing, paving and brickwork.
