BUSINESS NEWS
The month of May enters the fray and my, oh my, isn’t life outside bursting and blossoming? As per the moment the sun starts to shine, as does our social calendar. Expect this month to be populated by Maypoles, a multitude of livestock and a mammoth quota of events to fill one’s diary with. In community news we raise awareness of mental health and the stranglehold it can have on people’s lives. What can we do to keep our brains healthy and to become more mindful of the moment? Farmers and their livestock unite to grace parks and common land all over Surrey this month. The legendary Surrey County Show, the Surrey Heath County Show and The Merrist Wood Summer Show are all set to wow the crowds in their own unique way. We talk to arrows thrower and darts Don-mega, Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor as the sport returns to its Hampshire home of Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green for the Champion of Champions. We also meet with England and Harlequin’s main man, Chris Robshaw, to talk Rugby, post six-nations, pre-world cup and much more. If Rugby and Darts are just that too uncouth for you, then we have a plethora of country pursuits for you to get your croquet mallet behind too. As ever, towards the final pages of this month’s publication, you’ll find all the exclusive offers available to you with The Good Time Guide Offer Card; ensuring that your leisure and entertainment time is that bit more affordable. So go, enjoy yourselves, send us a postcard and tell us all about it.
This month’s front page, as I’m sure you’ll notice, is a rather wonderful looking Jersey Cow, of which we shall name Felicity (we apologise to Felicity and her family, should she be known by another name). This pretty lady hails from Pierrepont Farm over in Frensham, who are one of the last remaining dairy farms in the area. Delve inside for more moos.
Yours Sincerely, Mr D’Arcy

Your Community News A NEW LEGAL HIGH DROP-IN CENTRE IN GUILDFORD
B
ack in 2013, we took an in-depth look at the problem of legal highs in the area. A relatively recent phenomenon, a number of individuals dealing with legal high addicts declared that, in some cases, it was more serious than heroin addiction.
the UN, this is a significant problem. With this in mind, the charity SADAS is opening a drop-in centre for legal high users in Guildford. The sessions will run every Wednesday at Guildford Action Day Centre in Beverley Hall, Haydon Place.
A lack of accountability means that with these legal highs – which can be smoked, snorted or eaten – it’s incredibly difficult to know of the long-term effects. With a new legal high released once a week on average, and the UK ranking as the largest user of legal highs in
If you or someone you know has a problem with drug or alcohol dependency, or you’d like to find out more about the drop-in centre, visit www.sadas.org.uk or call 01483 590150.
GUTS SING-A-LONG AT THE LEGION 10TH MAY
T
his first ever Guildford Fringe Pub Singa-long is raising money for GUTS, with an evening of fun for anyone who enjoys a singsong. GUTS are a Surrey-based bowel cancer charity; amazingly, 1 in 18 of us will develop the disease at some point in our life. It’s a startling statistic, and GUTS’ events raise money to help combat bowel cancer. The Pub Sing-a-long is one such event,
taking place on the second Sunday of every month. There will be a group leader who will guide the group in their learning and help to introduce some harmony singing along the way. Don’t worry if not Beyoncé; this is a fun, social event! The pub sing-a-long takes place at The Legion on Sunday 10th May. Visit gutsfbc.co.uk/events for more info.

STREET PLAY IN WESTBOROUGH A HIT – SO SHOULD THIS BE A PERMANENT FIXTURE?
D
uring the Easter Holidays, dozens of local children enjoyed a Street Play session in Westborough, with Rickyard closed to traffic to offer a safe environment as part of a new initiative. Street Play is part of a national scheme endorsed by Play England. The idea is that every child has the freedom to regularly play actively and independently near their own front door, contributing to a healthy lifestyle. A typical Street Play session is an after-school or weekend event led by neighbours for neighbours, and only publicised within the immediate streets. A residential road is closed to through traffic, with volunteer stewards at each road closure point to redirect through traffic and escort residents' cars in and out safely. Residents who would like advice and support on how to organise their own Street Play event can contact the Play and Youth Development Officer on 01483 444764 or email playdevelopment@ guildford.gov.uk

Our Citizens... MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK This month the Mental Health Foundation celebrates Mental Health Awareness Week. Between 11th and 17th May, the charity and their supporters will be holding events up and down the country to raise awareness of issues surrounding mental health and wellbeing. Mental illness can take many forms including anxiety, depression, addiction, mood disorders and dementia to name just a few. Sadly, many people suffer in silence despite the many methods of support available within the community. We asked you your feelings about Mental Health…

Have you or anyone you know experienced mental health problems?
Is it easy to miss the signs of mental illness?
I’ve had depression for as long as I can remember. You feel like there’s always a black cloud over you, nothing’s in colour; you can go to an amazing concert and not hear the music. You just feel like a zombie. I admire anyone who says ‘I’m struggling, I need help.’
Yeah, but lots of people do. And lots of people do that don’t recognise it. I think it can be a bit of a taboo thing for people to admit that they are having problems. A lot of people might not know where to look for help. There’s a lot of help out there, but the first step is acknowledging it if you are having problems.
Photographer
What kind of help did you seek? I did go to the doctor for medication but I found it actually made it worse and gave me panic attacks, anxiety and made me withdraw. So I found the best therapy for me was to come off the medication and speak to my friends, get a counsellor and find someone to talk about it with. There is fantastic support out there if you look for it.

Is mental health something people find difficult to talk about? Yes. I think if you wanted to talk to someone who is suffering from mental illness you might be anxious about bringing it up, through fear of offending them or not seeing it from their point of you. It could be an awkward conversation and that seems like something that’s part of our society.
Business Owner
Without a doubt. People’s lives are so busy these days. And when you see someone is a certain way or having trouble it’s too easy to just think ‘pull yourself together’. People don’t understand it and they should.

Our Citizens... MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK
WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?
JO Programmer
JIM Youth Worker
I had a bit of a tough time at University. I broke up with someone and became depressed. I saw my doctor and got some prescription medication and it really helped.
I suffered a brain injury from an accident ten years ago. As a result I’ve met a lot of other people recovering from similar conditions. With help from a local charity, Headway, we learned how to live normal lives again.
Do you think there’s still a stigma attached to mental health? I think in terms of your friends and family it’s not an issue so much, but maybe when someone has to ring up work, for example, and say that they’re having a tough time and can’t get out of bed - if you had a cold it wouldn’t really be a problem. But I don’t think socially there’s as much of a stigma anymore.
Is mental health difficult for people to talk about? You don’t want to be defined by your condition. At first people treat you differently and can’t see past that. But the services that are available can give you confidence and coping strategies that help you overcome obstacles and get back to normal life.
As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, the Mental Health Foundation are promoting the practice of Mindfulness. But what is it and how can it be beneficial? While it can mean different things to different people, at the heart of it mindfulness helps you observe the way you think and feel about your experiences, whether good or bad. This really does have the power to change the way you manage and react to stressful situations, giving you a vital tool to stay mentally healthy. Unlike more subjective forms of meditation, mindfulness has an ever-expanding body of evidence that shows that it really works. You can practice it for 5 minutes or 5 hours a day; the beauty of it is how easy it is to adapt it to suit you.
There are numerous sources and centres to learn mindfulness near you but for more information and to find support for any form of mental illness visit:

Mental Health Aw
W
ith 1 in 10 individuals having problems with their mental health, it is highly likely that we all know someone who has suffered at some point. Yet why is the conversation surrounding the subject still seen as something of a taboo? Generally, we are much more forthcoming with our physical problems. Yes our bodies offer the most apparent and tangible problems, yet the mind is quite literally the motor that propels, organises and instructs our bodies. If our minds are suffering due to anxiety, stress and sleep deprivation, then the implications for the rest of the body are going to be negative. It’s hardly going to promote a physically healthy existence, is it? The list of mental health issues that have been analysed that exist in today’s ‘mindscape’ is more than extensive; from everyday worries and anxieties to more serious long-term conditions, it seems anything that consistently affects your mind is potentially an issue or matter to look into - so then by golly let’s talk about it! In everyday conversation and down the pub, let’s talk to one another.
Being Mindful
S
et up by the Mental Health Foundation in 2000, the week of events aims to raise awareness and debate on issues that surround the mind and its daily effects on everyday life. With a subject matter so complex and relatively undiscovered, the charity chooses a theme to explore every year in its goal to enlighten the masses. This year is something that we can all try and be conscious of Mindfulness. You’ve probably heard a lot about Mindfulness in the media recently. Perhaps you think it means sitting cross-legged on the floor and meditating. Maybe you think mindfulness means to simply concentrate on your breathing, or that mindfulness means to focus on your bodily sensations. Well mindfulness is all of those things, and so much more. Mindfulness is about paying attention to the present moment, without getting stuck
in the past or worrying about the future. Mindfulness can be practiced standing, sitting and walking, both indoors and out. It can be practiced at home, in schools, at work or simply out and about. You can practice mindfulness for 5 minutes or 5 hours. That’s the great thing about mindfulness; you can tailor it to suit your own needs. What you may be surprised to hear is that you have probably been mindful at some point in your life and didn’t even know it. Have you gone for a long walk, breathing in the crisp, fresh air and then suddenly realised that four hours have passed? Have you listened so intently to a song that for a moment, you weren’t thinking about anything but how beautiful the melody was? That’s mindfulness! Contrary to popular belief, mindfulness isn’t about emptying your mind of thoughts and ‘zoning out’. It can mean different things to different people. At the heart of it, mindfulness helps people observe the way they think and feel about their experiences, whether good or bad. This can really change the way you

SURSAR: THE WATER TEAM T
he Winter Floods that came between 2013 and 2014 are still a raw memory in many people’s minds. There’s so much that springs to mind when one thinks of the floods that it would be forgivable to forget the positive images that we all saw on the screens and that some of us saw with our own eyes. Like the men and women in red. Surrey Search and Rescue has its own water team made up of specially trained technicians whose job it is to bring the team’s skill and presence off dry land and into the hazardous realm of the water. The team are (very basically) divided into two core groups of technician; Flood Responder and Swift Water Rescue Technicians. The Flood Responders (they’re the guys in Yellow Helmets) are trained to work safely near or on water providing an initial response; checking people are ok in their houses, wading through
the floods to pull boats, bring supplies or evacuating those who are trapped. With some pictures emerging of children playing in flooded streets, it may seem strange that while they play happily in the brown water, Flood Responders are in dry suits, carefully making their way down streets, checking under their feet with poles, cautiously moving forward. A flooded street is incredibly dangerous. Burst manhole covers under the surface for example can trap your feet, and if there’s an undercurrent not visible on the surface, you can be swept away. These guys are cautious for good reason. And the dry suits? Well, aside from spending the day in freezing water, the brown liquid contains a staggering amount of bacteria and germs. Think about it; sewage is liquid at the end of the day, if the ground’s flooded the sewage mixes in. You’re swimming and paddling in…well, you know. The Swift Water Rescue Technicians (the Red Helmets) do exactly the same job but are also trained further to operate in extremely fast flowing water. The
crashing ferocity of water has been shown time and time again how dangerous it is, and although severe flows and thundering bodies of water were not always the first images we saw that winter, an operator with the skills to swim in the most treacherous of conditions is essential. Unlike the flow of the sea, a flow in a river is relentless; it doesn’t stop and once it’s caught hold of something it will rip it away. Getting in the water is the last thing anyone wants to do. It is really dangerous and unlike other areas of Search and Rescue the risk to life is extremely high. A lot of the training centres on saving people from the water without getting in. Boats, rope work and good team organisation will always top a swimmer in the water. That’s the risk the guys took during the flood and that’s why Search and Rescue is such an important part of the emergency services. Without them, the outcome of those floods could have been a lot worse than it already was.

MAGNA CARTA: WHAT’S THAT ABOUT THEN? by Will Knowlton The story takes place in 1215. Standard villain King John was forced to sign this epic document called the Magna Carta. Essentially this was a contract saying that the king was not to think that he was above the law and was expected to protect the rights of the people as part of his job spec. John became king in 1199 when his brother, Richard the Lionheart, ended up at the wrong end of a crossbow bolt and died with no kids to tow the line. John had a bad temper and was a general all-round douche. Sufficed to say the barons did not like him. To be fair, John had inherited a bit of a hornets nest; England was having one of many nasty wars with France which was emptying the coffers fast. To fund the war, John taxed the barons something chronic. He also managed to really tick off the Pope who excommunicated him. So here was England, in the middle of an economic downturn, dealing with overseas conflicts and a leader who wanted to tax the rich to deal with the deficit. Sound familiar? After sixteen years of John’s tax system the barons, led by Robert Fitzwalter, had had enough. Fitzwalter rallied the Barons and marched down to London, taking over the city. They called themselves The Army of God (Presumably because The Army of Tax Dodging Landowners was a bit of a mouthful). King John met the barons on June 15th 1215 (a Monday) at Runnymede, as it was neutral ground with convenient parking and excellent local shops. Here the barons demanded that King John sign a document called the Magna Carta which guaranteed them certain rights. If John signed it he would be agreeing to do his duty as King of England, upholding the law and running a fair government. In return, the barons agreed not to kill him.
Game of Thrones Type Twist (without Dragons): Of course, no bugger had any intention of sticking to the agreement. First John got his lawyers on the case to try and nullify the contract, even getting the Pope to declare it illegal (as they were now friends again). In return the barons just dug in at London, refusing to leave. By now the country was teetering on all out civil war and in the sort of move the CIA would have approved of, the French offered military aid to the barons. For the next year the barons and John slapped each other about with no one gaining anything. Then in 1216 John died of dysentery in Newark Castle. The war went on for a bit but ultimately the royalists started to gain more ground and by 1217 the war was done. Henry III, who was all of about 9, had his protectorate William Marshall resurrect the amended Magna Carta and the future government structure started to take shape. The ideas in the Magna Carta became lasting principles of liberty and freedom to us. Three of the 67 clauses are still in force as English law today, including the freedom of the English Church, the ancient liberties of the City of London as well as the right to due process. The right to consistently request your friends play Candy Crush saga and to take photos of your lunch was not.

TALKING TO…
Reginald D Hunter
By Rich Lee
Mixing biting social commentary, Deep South wisdom and juicy punchlines, the often controversial but always hilarious Reginald D Hunter brings his latest UK tour “The Man Who Attempted To Do As Much As Such” to Guildford this month and to Woking in June…
“Americans are as stupid as everyone else, it’s just that our technology has made our stupidity legendary.” Can you reveal some of the themes you’ll be talking about on your new tour? Oh man, I never answer this question well. I mean it’s not like a film where you can do trailers: (affects a booming narrator’s voice) “Coming up, Reg will be talking about religion, politics and p***y!” Or “Reg is undertaking a dare, where if he can make the audience mess themselves with one joke that he doesn’t have to do for the rest of the show, he’s going to attempt that the rest of the tour.” That’s the ‘Death Star’ joke. Show starts at 8, it’s over by 8.02!
You’ve been in the UK for 20 years now. Was there a moment when you just ‘got’ the English? I guess what clicked was when I saw how there’s like a kit that comes with being British. It’s got the British sense of humour in there, your sense of right and wrong, the self-deprecating thing. I’m an outsider and American neuroses are different from yours, so being around your neuroses helped me develop mine.
What’s the greatest misconception both nations have about each other? I think the greatest misconception that Americans have about the British is that y’all are all scholars. I try to explain to folks back home what British idiots are like - they don’t get squaddies or ‘the lads’. The misconception that the English have about Americans are that we’re stupid. We’re about as stupid as everyone else, it’s just that our technology has made our stupidity legendary.
You originally came to England to study acting at RADA before moving into standup. Would you consider taking on TV acting or movie work? I’ve thought about it and been offered a thing or two here and there. But I just haven’t seen a lot of things that interest me. A lot of old folks from where I’m from have a saying: ‘What ‘it do?’. I see a lot of things come out that have a nice sheen to ‘em, but they’re not saying anything. What ‘it do?
So what would a Reginald D Hunter sitcom look like? (Laughs) Well… I don’t think it would be put on any of the ma jor networks! I think portions would be animated. And it will be some of the most astounding dialogue ever heard!
Finally, for anyone going to see you at Guildford or Woking who hasn’t seen you perform before, what can they expect to take away from the show? You know what, I really don’t know. One of the toughest things about being a standup is that I’ll never truly experience myself live. I think you can analyse the magic right out of something. I don’t really want to understand what makes me good. But! They should expect a lot of laughs, some of them will be uncomfortable but I’m told that sometimes it can be thought-provoking… I’m pretty confident that at the very least it will be interesting! (Laughs).
Reginald D Hunter will be performing at Guildford’s G Live on 27th & 28th May and Woking’s New Victoria Theatre on 3rd June.

Y SHOW 2015
Spring Bank Holiday Monday 25th May
Family Everywhere you look at the Surrey County Show there’s something to thrill all ages. And you’ll find the hottest action at the Grand Arena. This year sees the first ever performance of the Stampede Stunt Company’s ‘Magna Carta’; stunts, thrills and trial by combat. Fast and furious Scurry Driving (that’s pairs of tiny yet feisty ponies tackling an obstacle course flat out), Grand Prix show jumping and much more all capped off with a soaring, spectacular hot air balloon finale.
Food and Shopping Want to know why Surrey is such a foodie’s paradise? You’ll find the answer at the glorious Food and Drink Hall and Surrey Farmers’ Market. Here you’ll find myriad stalls from the county’s best producers selling locally grown, reared, baked and homemade food and drinks. The AGA Rangemaster Food Theatre is one of the most popular draws at the show and with good reason. Over the course of the day you can watch how some of Surrey’s best chefs create their favourite dishes. This year will feature unmissable demonstrations from Guildford chef Dan Britten and a glimpse into the delicious arts of cheese making from Michaela Allam at Norbury Blue Cheese. Beyond food you can also listen to John Negus present Gardener’s Question Time, watch the floristry displays and competition or saunter among the many craft stalls for wonderful gifts.

MEET THE JERSEY COWS
OF PIERREPONT FARM Making their annual appearance at the Surrey County Show this year is one farm that exemplifies our county’s forward thinking approach to agriculture. Pierrepont Farm in Frensham near Farnham honours the region’s dairy farming traditions while employing modern methods, compassion for their animals and a commitment to educating visitors about ethical farming and wildlife. Gifted to the Countryside Restoration Trust in 2006, this dairy farm is set over 200 acres on Surrey heathland. As well as extensive pasture, the farm has wooded areas and a wet meadow next to the River Wey, which has been designated an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) because of its important flora and fauna. Dairy Farmer Mike Clear and his family tend a herd of pedigree Jersey cattle and, with the CRT’s help, have installed a new state-of-theart dairy, improving the welfare of the whole herd. How state of the art? Put it this way: the cows milk themselves! The cattle are free to come and go from field to paddock whenever they like, and when they feel it’s time for milking they sedately queue up to let the farm’s ‘robot’s gently do the work. So if you’re heading to the Show this month be sure to meet some of Pierrepont’s beautiful prize Jerseys. Visit crtinsurrey.org.uk for more information
Festival of Food, Farming and Wildlife Sunday 7th June is a perfect opportunity to visit Pierrepont Farm when they host their annual open day. The festival aims to promote a better understanding of the link between farming, wildlife and the food on our plates. You’ll be able to visit the milking parlour and watch the pedigree Jersey cows milking themselves as well as be able to get up close and personal with the happy cattle themselves. With plenty of great activities and games for kids, and stalls selling local foods and gifts, this is a great way to visit a modern working dairy farm and have some fun too.
The Festival of Food, Farming and Wildlife takes place between 11am and 4pm. Entry is free. The entrance to Pierrepont Farm is off The Reeds Road in Frensham, between the Rural Life Centre and the Frensham Garden Centre. Satnav users need to enter the postcode GU10 3BP

WHERE TO EAT: Drake’s, Ripley
By Rich Lee
This month we visit one of Surrey’s most celebrated restaurants, the Michelin-starred Drake’s in Ripley… Sat on the patio in Drake’s country garden, a glass of sparkling Nyetimber in hand, the sun shining, the first shoots of Swiss chard and radishes peeking above the chef’s vegetable patch to meet the spring: It’s a fine place to sit as you anticipate the brush with brilliance that lies ahead. We don’t even have to leave the serenity of the garden to get a first taste of the kind of food to come. Appetisers appear and the tease is on: puffed rice crackers dabbed with spots of avocado and cucumber; short rib beef ‘croquettes’ coated in tickly golden breadcrumbs and a swoonful amouse-bouche of mushroom meringue. I have to resist the urge to, urchin cap in hand, ask for more, although they’d probably happily give it to me. Generosity, as we discover, is one of Drake’s many virtues. We’re smoothly ushered into the restaurant to take our seats for the lunch menu – a new and
welcome addition at Drake’s- but any presumptions of starched, rigid service vanishes. Welloiled but never forced, Drake’s staff ghost the tables with unpretentious, easy charm. The restaurant inside the gorgeous red-brick Georgian building that Drake’s calls home is pleasant enough: soft creams and timber beams that scream ‘accents’ rather than ‘period’. But you don’t come to Steve Drake’s place for the décor.
“This is what ten years spent in pursuit of perfection looks like”
You come for dishes like a starter of rabbit artfully rolled in tender ribbons of squid (belowleft); game and fish spiralling together superbly (we’d had our palates primed beforehand with a beguiling snifter of vintage madeira and a rabbit and squid broth.) Spiked with curls of chorizo and scattered with podfresh peas and a foamy chervil mayonnaise, the dish was light and playful yet serious on flavour. Mains brought brill cooked to ethereal, buttery perfection on a bed of lightly braised lettuce with morels, slivers of button mushroom and glossy drops of creamy miso. When flavours of sea and forest tumble together as well as this you can’t help but applaud (silently, this is still fine dining after all.) Across from this, a plate of suckling pig -loin, shoulder and fillet- played beautifully with pickled parsnip, piquillo pepper and sage butter. But for all of Drake’s lightness of touch he still lets the animal speak for itself, right down to the seared gold layers of unctuous pork fat. Following a pre-dessert of vanilla ice cream on a rhubarb coulis and puffed rice, an eyewateringly pink raspberry panna cotta (above-right) layered over Peruvian chocolate had been both enriched and lightened with olive oil. Silky, sweet and lifted with a smooth hazelnut milk
FOOD & DRINK
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Food-and-Drink
sorbet this dessert managed to be both decadent and light. And dare I say it, fun? For cooking of this calibre to look so effortless means, of course, that it isn’t. This is what ten years spent in pursuit of perfection looks like and it’s why Steve Drake has won a Michelin star for every one of those. Having coasted on the fame of his Flavour Discovery and Flavour Journey tasting menus, Steve tells me later that he recognised a need to be more flexible in what he offered to his diners: “I decided I want to give more control back to the customer.” Which is why he now changes his lunch and a la carte menus on the 1st of every month. “We need to kick ourselves up the arse and keep things exciting, even if we love a particular dish and don’t want to take it off.” So there you have it. Already one of the best restaurants in Surrey, a looser, more versatile Drake’s makes a visit more essential than ever.

THE RENOWNED MILFORD BUTCHERS HAVE WON SIX GOLD AWARDS AND CAME OVERALL CATEGORY WINNER AT THE Q GUILD SOUTH EAST AWARDS.
T
heir other award-winning products included homemade jerk pork cutlet and a stuffed lamb fillet. Competition was felt among the other butchers among categories that included speciality burgers, plain, ‘naked’ steaks. “We all buy similar quality meat,” says manager Damon Buckingham. ”We’ll often buy one side of the cow and a competitor will buy the other but there are always new innovative ways to produce something different and be creative. The standard this year so much higher than last year. “It was our first Q Guild competition this year so It was quite daunting, for me personally, to go up against some of these members that have won so many awards. So it’s very positive to come away with some good awards and recognition.” Their prize sausage was voted best speciality sausage in the South East region of the Q guild butchers BBQ competition which now goes on to the national finals in May 2015. The Poppy’s Ploughman recipe contains a gluten free pork mix with fresh apple and fresh red onions. A red onion chutney is added along with apple sauce and grated extra mature cheddar. (So basically a ploughman’s lunch in a sausage and every bit as delicious as that sounds.) The recipe was inspired by local school pupil Poppy Hanscomb from Chandler School in
Witley following their Chandler School Sausage Competition which invited pupils to suggest sausage recipes for Black Barn Butchers to produce. On producing the winning recipe in the Q Guild category Damon said: “It was something that was totally different - I guess it was the idea of a ploughman’s lunch on a summer day, a BBQ, that so appealing.” The Q Guild’s 110 members are among the best butchers in the country accepted Black Barn Butchers into their fold in November 2014 based on their outstanding produce and dedication to their trade. “The Q Guild membership is another great step forward for us – it’s that stamp of approval which gives people confidence in what we’re doing.” Black Barn Butchers, based at Secretts Farm Shop, was launched in March, 2012, and prides itself on being a traditional butchers with a modern twist, sourcing from high welfare quality controlled farms. THE YEAR OF THE DOG Ah, the humble hot dog. Invented in Germany, popularised in America after becoming synonymous with baseball and exported all over the world (they kept the baseball, thankfully), the hot dog is both culinary and cultural icon in one. The classic hot dog entails a frankfurter sausage on a soft white roll, squiggled with lines of ketchup and mustard and, if it’s feeling fancy, fried onions. Traditional, conventional but very tasty all the same. But, like anything, it can always be tastier, right? Fortunately, two Guildford venues agree…
Firefly @the Keystone fireflyvenues.com Since the Keystone Pub reinvented itself this spring, metamorphosing into the fantastic arts venue Firefly, their menu has also seen a hefty revamp with the addition of their blazing chargrilled menu. With grub plucked straight out of the Great American cookbook you’ll find 13 hour pulled pork, Ca jun chicken and beef brisket. But then they go further with some amazing burgers and hot dogs, all served with seasoned fries and house slaw. Not for them the flaccid pink frankfurter of yore. Firefly hot dogs go for 10” smoked Cumberland sausages instead, with the ‘Firedog’ adding fried onions, chocolate chilli brisket and jalapenos, all for only £11.50. And to wash it all down? Alongside a lineup of fantastic craft beers, they also serve their own unaged Firefly Moonshine whisky. Just what Guildford’s always needed.

The Legion guildfordlegion.com Already one of G-Town’s favourite nightspots, the Legion nightclub recently had a rethink. A refurb swiftly followed and resulted in the addition of a brand new gourmet hot dog bar on the ground floor lounge. Think about it: that’s a whole evening set over three floors. Downstairs, you can fuel up on some banging hot dogs, head upstairs to the bar and dance floor, then finally schmooze away the rest of the night in the Legion’s glitzy cocktail lounge. Or you could just come for the dogs. First you select your banger from a traditional frankfurter, bratwurst, Cumberland, venison or veggie. Then you choose a roll (we recommend the brioche) and add cheese or bacon - or both if you’re really serious about. Finally, coat that dog with fillings like jalapenos, pickles, peppers and olives and you’re good to go!

Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Marathon events which raises millions of pounds every year to fund research to help beat 200 types of cancer. Last year, 3643 women took part in Race for Life in Guildford and raised a fantastic £251,543. This year, organisers need even more women and girls to rally together to help raise an even greater amount for vital research. More than one in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Survival rates have doubled since the early 1970s.
Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across The South East. Free training plans for different levels of ability are available on the Race for Life website. The six-week training plans are designed for walkers, joggers or runners. TALKING TO... England’s ‘nearly men’ tag remained stuck firmly on their shoulders as they finished runners-up in this year’s Six Nations for the fourth successive time, after falling just short of a twenty-six point victory when they defeated France 55-35 in their final game.
The result meant Ireland, who had provided England’s only loss throughout the campaign, were named champions for the second successive year. England captain and Harlequins Flanker Chris Robshaw admitted that the loss was hard to take, but that there were
plenty of positives to take out of the tournament as a whole. “I was devastated, to be honest, and to fall short on points is tough to take, but you have to look at the positives now. Some of the young guys stepping in are really good, they really stood up and took big tackles
and were also on hand when injuries happened too – that’s always encouraging. “Our attacking shape has really improved too and we showed that. People knew we were good defensively, but our attacking needed improving and we’ve got there – you

Chris Robshaw look at the amount of tries we scored and the amount of tries we potentially left on the pitch too, especially the Scotland game, we should’ve scored more.” It was the first time in over one hundred years that England had scored over seven tries against France and they also finished top try scorers of the 2015 tournament; stats that only further support the England captain’s optimism regarding his side’s improving attacking threat. The 28-year-old was keen to take these positives into this year’s England World Cup that starts in September however he was reluctant to give his thoughts on how far his side could go. “Look, the World Cup’s an extremely competitive thing. When you get to the World Cup Group Stages you need to be on your metal every time as we found with the Six Nations. When we went over to Ireland in the Six Nations we weren’t on-point and it cost us, potentially, the entire tournament.
what could be perceived as pressure and use it in a positive way, it’ll only help.” Domestically with the Harlequins it’s been a very stop-start season that looks to be ending in disappointment, Robshaw, however, has been impressed in parts and has been happy with his performances on a personal level. “Unfortunately we’ve been a little up-and-down this season and it’s probably reflected on our league position, we’ve just been too inconsistent. We have glimpses where we play some really good rugby, Leicester games and Wasp games come to mind, but again it’s the
Bty Tayler Willson
The Harlequins train at Guildford’s Surrey University Sports Park, and after some substantial improvements the England captain feels the facilities can really help the Quins push on and push higher up the table next season. “It’s fantastic [Surrey Sports Park]; we have our new stateof-the-art facilities that have replaced our old ones which weren’t particularly great. Our new one is top notch, with a state-of-the-art gym, superb, well-kept pitches and, well, everything we need. It also helps us as a club to evolve and hopefully get back to where the Harlequins should be. As England captain, Surreyborn Robshaw is seen as a role model for so many aspiring rugby stars and for them he advised: “Work hard and enjoy it. You’ve got to put the hard work in, if it’s going out and do some extra fitness work on your own or simply some extra ball work, if you put in the hard work, you can achieve goals. Enjoy it, though, we enjoy it, we enjoy coming to work, although I don’t really consider it as work, and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I’m very privileged to be a professional.”
“It’s not us against that country; it’s us against a team with the entire country behind us.”
“But going into the World Cup, we need to make sure that every time we go on the pitch, especially at Twickenham, we make sure all our details are spot on. The intensity has to be up there and our game plan needs to be spot on.” “I’m sure the pressure will build and grow because we are the home nation. But you can look at it as, it’s a huge incentive for us, it’s huge excitement and we’ve got sixty-million people supporting us. It’s not us against that country; it’s us against a team with the entire country behind us. If we use
consistency that we’ve just not been able to sustain this year. “I myself am enjoying it. When you go between country and club you mix with coaches and different players so it keeps you fresh and it keeps you on your toes. You do different drills, you have different players around you and different voices – it’s always important to stay fresh and, yeah, I feel I am and I’ve been happy with my performances for both England and Quins.

LAKESIDE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS: Phil Taylor Some of the best names in darts will be at Frimley Green’s Lakeside Country Club on May 8th, as the Champion of Champions event 2015 kicks off… Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, Raymond van Barneveld, James Wade and Andy ‘The Viking’ Fordham are just some of the sports’ stars that’ll be taking part on darts’ most famous stage. Lakeside Country Club is, to many, considered to be the home of British darts, with the BDO World Darts Championships held there annually.
Martin Adams and Ted Hankey playing too, and Bobby George against Andy Fordham who are both big characters.”
In 1992 it was a brilliant match against Mike Gregory which went all the way to a suddendeath leg.
Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor will be competing in the event for the first time this year. In terms of statistics, The Power is streets ahead of his nearest competitors as the greatest tungsten thrower of all time. Indeed, he is arguably the most dominant player of any solo sport – no darts player has a winning record against him.
Phil is renowned for his competitiveness on the oche, but seeing him compete against his fellow legends in a Champion of Champions match will be a more fun – but no less exciting – affair. “Exhibition nights like this are always fun – obviously you want to win but it’s not the be-all-and-end-all, so we can relax a bit and put a show on for the fans.”
“They’ll always be special memories for me, but obviously now I don’t get to Lakeside very often so this will be a nice night for me. The last time I was there was to do some TV work for the BBC which was quite a while ago, so it’s going to be a trip down memory lane!”
We spoke to the two time BDO World Champion and fourteentime PDC World Championship champion about the night at Lakeside; and he is excited by what the night has to offer. “Fans will be seeing some fantastic players going head-to-head on the night – obviously me against Barney [Raymond van Barneveld] is always a big game but there’s James Wade, Mark Webster,
The fifty-four year-old admitted that he’d lost count on the amount of times he had played at Lakeside, but cited two very special memories the venue holds close to his heart: “Winning my first two World Championships in 1990 and 1992 at Lakeside was special for different reasons – the 1990 win over Eric [Bristow] was my first World Championship and nobody expected me to win.
“It’s got great history and because of the size and layout it creates a really good atmosphere.”
