CHOBHAM MYSTERY TO BE REVEALED THROUGH SITA FUNDING BOOST

S

urrey Wildlife Trust are celebrating the news that it has received a £48K funding award from SITA Trust for Access Improvements at Chobham Common National Nature Reserve. These improvements are much needed to benefit both people and wildlife. The project will provide visitors with the opportunity to walk or ride a number of circular routes along the improved tracks. The south eastern part of Chobham Common National Nature Reserve (NNR) currently suffers from poor visitor accessibility. The footpaths and bridleways are not defined so visitors can get lost, wandering off route and increasing soil erosion, and during the winter they are boggy and can become completely impassable.

The funding will allow the improvement of a ma jor access track on to the common and a wonderful opportunity to tell the story of a fascinating and intriguing area of the common. Though a scheduled ancient monument, the Bee Garden has a history that remains a mystery and many have debated the origin of this large earthwork. The remains of a Napoleonic fort, a Roman building, or even a medieval Bee Garden supplying highly sought after honey and beeswax to pay local tithes have all been considered as the function of this familiar local feature. When completed, with the help of volunteers and local contractors, the project will provide visitors with the opportunity to walk or ride a number of circular routes along the improved tracks.

The project will also improve the biodiversity of species on Chobham Common by removing invasive rhododendron, creating new pond habitats and creating woodland glades. Steve Fry, Surrey Wildlife Trust Ranger for Chobham Common said “This is a wonderful opportunity to improve the public’s access to this inspiring site whilst at the same time protecting its rare wildlife. We are extremely grateful for the support of Chobham Parish Council, Chobham Common Riders Association and the County Council’s Rights of Way team who have enabled these much needed improvements” For more information visit surreywildlifetrust.org

SOUP’S UP IN BELLFIELDS

E

ver had an idea, project, or start-up that will benefit the community? Have you struggled to get funding or get the project started? Then Surrey SOUP is the place for

you.

Surrey Soup is a volunteer effort and exercise in community, food, creativity and good times. The aim of the group is to create new opportunities and lasting cultural exchange with our locality. At each meeting, 3 applicants will be chosen to present to the audience for five minutes – who they are, a picture of the problem, and a picture of the solution. Each presenter can also answer 4 questions from the audience. Each audience member then casts a vote for their favourite project. The one with the most votes wins the cash. And of course everyone gets a bowl of soup and bread – Everyone is a winner! After the success of the first SOUP held at The Boileroom in Guildford, the movement is branching out further afield into the rest of Surrey. On Sunday 8th May, the SOUP movement will be hosting their first dinner in Bellfields at St. peters Church Hall on Hazel Avenue. If you have a pitch or an idea that you want to get heard then visit theboileroom.net.

Your Community News SURREY UNVEILS GRAPHENE ‘MOTH EYES’ TO POWER FUTURE SMART TECHNOLOGIES

N

ew research published recently in Science Advances has shown how graphene can be manipulated to create the most light-absorbent material for its weight, to date. This nanometre-thin material will enable future applications such as ‘smart wallpaper’ that could generate electricity from waste light or heat, and power a host of applications within the growing ‘internet of things’. Using a technique known as Nano-texturing, which involves growing graphene around a textured metallic surface, researchers from the University of Surrey’s Advanced Technology Institute took inspiration from nature to create ultra-thin graphene sheets designed to more effectively capture light. Just one atom thick, graphene is very strong but traditionally inefficient at light absorption. To combat this, the team used the Nano-patterning to localise light into the narrow spaces between the textured surface, enhancing the amount of light absorbed by the material by about 90%.

TECHNOLOGY INSPIRED BY NATURE “Nature has evolved simple yet powerful adaptations, from which we have taken inspiration in order to answer challenges of future technologies,” explained Professor Ravi Silva, Head of the Advanced Technology Institute. “Moths’ eyes have microscopic patterning that allows them to see in the dimmest conditions. These work by channelling light towards the middle of the eye, with the added benefit of eliminating reflections, which would otherwise alert predators of their location. We have used the same technique to make an amazingly thin, efficient, light-absorbent material by patterning graphene in a similar fashion.” Graphene has already been noted for its remarkable electrical conductivity and mechanical strength. Professor Ravi’s team understood that for graphene’s potential to be realised as material for future applications, it should also harness light and heat effectively. Professor Silva commented: “Solar cells coated with this material would be able to harvest very dim light. Installed indoors, as part of future ‘smart wallpaper’ or ‘smart windows’, this material could generate electricity from waste light or heat, powering a numerous array of smart applications. New types of sensors and energy harvesters connected through the Internet of Things would also benefit from this type of coating.”

NANOTEXTURING FOR SMART TECHNOLOGIES Dr José Anguita of the University of Surrey and lead author of the paper commented: “As a result of its thinness, graphene is only able to absorb a small percentage of the light that falls on it. For this reason, it is not suitable for the kinds of optoelectronic technologies our ‘smart’ future will demand.” “Nano-texturing graphene has the effect of channelling the light into the narrow spaces between nanostructures, thereby enhancing the amount of light absorbed by the material. It is now possible to observe strong light absorption from even nanometre-thin films. Typically a graphene sheet would have 2-3% light absorption. Using this method, our ultrathin coating of Nano-textured few-layer graphene absorbs 95% of incident light across a broad spectrum, from the UV to the infrared.”

Professor Ravi Silva noted: “The next step is to incorporate this material in a variety of existing and emerging technologies. We are very excited about the potential to exploit this material in existing optical devices for performance enhancement, whilst looking towards new applications. Through Surrey’s EPSRC funded Graphene Centre, we are looking for industry partners to exploit this technology and are keen to hear from innovative companies who we can explore the future applications of this technology with us.” The Surrey team developed this technology in cooperation with BAE Systems for infrared imaging in opto-MEMs devices. What is Brexit? Brexit. That most dreaded portmanteau for those of you seeking to distance yourselves from endless debate and tedious political monotony. However, the referendum is now very much on the horizon, and the decision to leave is not one to be taken lightly. We at The Guide 2 Surrey are an opinionated and political bunch, but we have no interest in swaying your opinion to a particular side. We do however, want to educate and inform those who perhaps need a little bit of info. We’re nice like that. So what do you need to know about Brexit? Here are a few facts for you…

What is Brexit?

By Joe Payne

Why are we in the EU? Let’s start from the very beginning. On 1st January 1973 the United Kingdom joined the EEC (then commonly referred to in the UK as the Common Market – you might have heard Del Boy say this in Only Fools back in the 80s) under Tory PM Edward Heath. The EEC was initially formed in 1958. The opposition Labour Party, led by Harold Wilson, contested the October 1974 general election with a commitment to renegotiate Britain’s terms of membership and then hold a referendum on whether to remain in the EEC on the new terms. Sounds familiar; only the parties have switched.

What is the EU in 2016? Since its inception, the EU has since grown to become a single market, allowing goods and people to move around - basically as if the member states were one country. The euro, which is used by 19 of the member countries, has its own parliament and it now sets rules in a wide range of areas - including on the environment, transport, consumer rights and even things like mobile phone charges. The full list of EU members, and when they joined the EU (or EEC) is:

On 5th June 1975, the electorate were asked to vote yes or no on the question: “Do you think the UK should stay in the European Community?” The answer was a resounding ‘Yes’, with all parties having members who wanted to stay and leave. Who says times have changed? In short, despite subsequent governments campaigning on the issue, we’ve remained a part of the EEC (now called the European Union after the 1992 Maastricht Treaty) ever since.

Why do some want to stay and some leave? In a nutshell… Some of those in favour of a British withdrawal from the European Union argue that being a member of the EU undermines Parliamentary sovereignty. In contrast, some in favour of membership argue that, in a world with so many large organisations, any theoretical loss of sovereignty is more than compensated by the benefits of membership of the EU. It is argued by those that support withdrawal that it would allow the UK to be better able to control immigration, be in a better position to conduct its own trade negotiations, and be free from what they believe to be unnecessary EU regulations and

How does it work? If you’ve voted before, it will be similar to previous elections. Firstly, once you’ve registered to vote, you’ll be sent a card telling you when voting takes place and where you should go to vote on 23rd June. On that day, when you go to the polling station you will be given a piece of paper with the referendum question on it. You then go to a booth, and put an X in the box which reflects your choice and put the paper into a ballot box. Alternatively you will also be able to opt to vote by post.

bureaucracy. Those in favour of remaining in the EU argue that leaving would risk the UK’s prosperity, diminish its influence over world affairs, make the UK less safe, and result in trade barriers between the UK and the EU. In particular, they argue that leaving the EU would lead to job losses, delays in investment coming to the UK and risks to small business as well as the larger ones. There are numerous reasons why people want to stay and leave the EU, however. Should you be undecided, then we highly recommend doing a wee bit of research and seeing the opinions that resonate best with you…

When is the referendum? And who can vote? Thursday 23rd June 2016 is the date. British, Irish and Commonwealth citizens over 18 who are resident in the UK, along with UK nationals living abroad who have been on the electoral register in the UK in the past 15 years, are all eligible to vote. Are you registered? You absolutely have to be to put your name on it. Visit gov.uk/register-to-vote as soon as possible – it takes about 5 minutes, so there’s no excuse!

The options will read as follows: Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?

Why Now?

With the responses: (to be marked with a single (x)) Remain a member of the European Union [ ] Leave the European Union [ ]

The referendum was part of the Conservative Party manifesto put before the 2015 General Election. With the pledge to hold the referendum said to be before the end of 2017, it does seem rather soon, but we shan’t get into why it is this exact date. It is (almost) as much of a political discussion as the referendum itself.

Which parties and big names want us to stay and leave? England, Scotland and Wales: Remain: Green Party

Plaid Cymru

Labour Party Scottish National Party (SNP) Liberal Democrats

Leave:

Neutral:

UK Independence Party (UKIP)

Conservative Party

OUR CITIZENS On Thursday 23rd June 2016 British, Irish and commonwealth citizens over 18 who are residents in the UK, along with UK nationals living abroad who have been on the electoral register in the UK within the past 15 years will vote on whether the UK should stay in Europe or leave it. We asked some Surrey folk their thoughts on whether the UK should remain as part of the European Union or indeed leave it altogether. Tayler, 23 Writer

Josephine, 61 Retired

Should the UK stay in Europe or leave?

Should the UK stay in Europe or leave?

If it ain’t broke, don’t Brexit!

My gut feeling is that we should stay. Leaving and being ‘free’ may be a tempting concept, but I believe that in the end it would be better to stay and try to make the EU organisation better from the inside. It’s not our way to walk away from our friends and pull up the drawbridge. Now is not a time to be alone or to leave others alone.

Is there enough information out there for you to make an informed decision? For me there’s not enough info available that gives the pros and cons of each. It boils down to a choice between staying in a largely unreformed EU and remaining in the same situation for the time being, or leaving, with the short-term disruption and uncertainty that will almost certainly bring with it. Leaving would leave the Tories with two options: either to agree to all EU demands to be allowed to trade or go it alone. Either way it isn’t the way forward for me.

Ade, 34 (Living in France)

Private Transfer Driver

Should the UK stay in Europe or leave? Yes I think the UK should stay in Europe. For various reasons: 1. Voting to isolate us seems like a ridiculous notion to me. The ability to move around Europe freely, the ability to own property and businesses easily abroad is awesome and although we don’t know exactly what would happen if we left, if we look at other countries examples, we are unlikely to be able to have the freedom we have now in these respects. I would imagine some sort of points system based on age and qualifications to be in place which would leave old farts like me stuck! In France for example I really can’t see them doing us any favours. I would imagine they will make it much harder for English to work over here. France has very high unemployment so I can imagine any excuse to force employers to employ French people would be very quickly passed!

Is there enough information out there for you to make an informed decision? There can’t be any hard information, as we’re facing an unknown situation. All we have are the firmly (and sincerely) held beliefs of people who’ve made their minds up already and want us to agree with them. My respect goes to anyone who publicly admits that, actually, nobody knows. In or out, it’s a leap in the dark, whatever anyone says.

2. I can’t possibly vote for any more division of peoples. The world is already so divided so any union of people has to be a good thing. We will only progress as a species, when we identify each other by our similarities rather than define each other by our differences. “An organism at war with itself is doomed” - Carl Sagan 3. As part of the EU we are strong - Britain doesn’t really export much these days, in fact I think its GDP as a percentage of the world is less than 1% - Europe however is 20% odd so we have, as part of Europe, an ability to negotiate for our interest much more efficiently on the world stage and keep our interests heard instead of just letting Russia, China and the U.S do their thing. 4. Whether the EU is a broken system or not, you’ve got to be in the system to change it right? How do you think it would impact you as UK citizen living on the continent? I think I’m going to find it hard to buy a place and start a business in France if Britain exits, for the reasons outlined above. Which sucks.

ENTERTAINMENT

APRIL 2016

Talking to Professor Noel Fitzpatrick Channel 4’s Supervet and indeed Surrey’s very own superstar, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick found time in his busy schedule to catch up with The Guide 2 Surrey ahead of his second ONE LIVE festival which takes place at Loseley Park on the 4th June in aid of The Humanimal Trust. Bands playing on the day include Reef, Star Sailor, The Feeling, Scouting For Girls and many more. By Alexander D’Arcy In your own words, what is ONE LIVE all about? What will the day look like? ONE LIVE is a music festival in support of One Medicine which is a remarkably simple and obvious, yet poorly understood concept. The fact is that we all get disease and we get the cures for that disease by obtaining safe drugs and implants which usually are tested on animals. One Medicine proposes that as we make advance in veterinary science this is shared with human medical science and vice-versa. So if you love your children and your dog and you want the best medical advance for both of them, you will be there in the field. Everybody who has a cat or a dog has a smile on their face when they greet them coming through the door. Pets share our world, drink our water and sleep in our houses; they are affected by cancer, infectious and degenerative diseases in an almost identical way to humans. In fact for example, dog bone cancer is indistinguishable from human bone cancer. Therefore new cures for cancer and other diseases can and should be developed in animals and humans at the same time. ONE LIVE gives a platform for this change in medical practice for the greater good of all species. Every band there and every person in the field will stand side-by-side to make medicine better. It will be an absolutely awesome evening. I’ll be there chatting to the crowd, with a few surprise guest appearances and

some amazing bands. I know that all of the bands there, from the unsigned young starters to the seasoned hit-makers, will all resonate together with one hope for the future. I strongly believe that we only have One Planet, we should look after it; there is only one love and it should bring hope to all of us, and there should only be One Medicine, because it’s the right thing to do for the animals and for future generations.

The premise of the event is to promote One Medicine for humans and animals and to promote the Humanimal Trust – are you able to tell us the progress of One Medicine (Where do we stand today? What is the proposed timeline for One Medicine becoming the norm?) Most research that has taken place to date under the banner of One Medicine has in general involved research on animals to study disease, drugs and implants that may be of relevance to humans. There has been precious little work on research that helps animals too. If they help us to develop safe and effective drugs and implants, isn’t it only fair that they get these advances too? The Humanimal Trust is all about redefining how this process works with reciprocity of communication that can reduce, refine and replace current research models and benefit man and animal at the same time. This new paradigm will take time, but it seems like the only rational and fair way forward.

Why not work together for the greater good? By standing together at ONE LIVE, we can power that change.

Now that it has been discussed, it seems so natural to look at medicine as one rather than species specific – why do you think it has taken so long for us (mankind) to realise this? It has taken too long, and that is because people do not understand the concept of One Medicine. In the past animals served as experimental models for human disease, and now for the first time in history, some veterinary technology has transcended human techniques – and so we now have a simple but challenging choice – do we stay as we have been for the past 250 years, or faced with ever dwindling resources do we join forces or vet and human medicine together for

the greater good? Society is realising that we are near extinction for many wild animals internationally, and we love our dogs and our cats because they are part of our families – so let’s make a statement that it’s no longer acceptable to only use the experimental animal route. There is a better way.

grab this event with both hands and hold it up as a beacon of hope for everyone to see. If you want hope for the people and the animals you love, then you need to be there. That’s what ONE LIVE is all about – solidarity of purpose for the future of medical advance to benefit every creature on the planet.

What does it mean to you to be putting on the 2nd ONE Live Event after the success of last year’s inaugural event?

Your Veterinary Practice lies in the heart of Surrey – apart from saving all manner of creatures and amongst your busy schedule – how do you like to spend your time in Surrey? Do you have any recommendations for our leisure and entertainment time?

ONE LIVE has been my dream for all of my life and it means so much that I have the opportunity to do it again. Hopefully it will become an annual event and in a few years we’ll have a massive platform for changing medicine for the benefit of all species forever. I think it’s silly that we haven’t done this before so I intend to

I am hugely fortunate to live in Surrey and I’m so very grateful to the people of Surrey for allowing me to make my home here. We are so incredibly lucky to have

so many theatres and live music venues and whenever I have the chance, which is sadly very rare nowadays, I’m glued to a performance by some brilliant artist that lifts my heart to a new level for a moment in time – and I never want that feeling to leave me – which is why I will continue to try so hard to translate that light and that hope in my work and in the music of ONE LIVE.

Lastly…do you have a favourite animal and why? My dog Keira – because she’s my best friend, my confidante, my companion in good times and in bad and she always, and I mean always makes me smile! Get tickets for ONE LIVE by visiting: onelivefestival.co.uk

TALKING TO NEWTON FAULKNER By Alexander D’Arcy

Home grown here in Surrey, Newton Faulkner came to the nation’s attention back in 2007 with his debut album, the number 1 hit ‘Hand Built By Robots’. We caught up with the former A.C.M student as he gets ready to return to Guildford’ s G Live this April in support of his new album ‘Human Love’. A pleasure to speak to you sir - tell us a little bit about the album and the live show’s that you’ve got coming up? This was written over probably the longest period of constant writing that I’ve ever done. It takes a while to learn how to write and tour and keep it all going at the same time. It’s probably easier in a band if you’re all together and someone has an idea and it’s like ‘oh yeah let’s do that, that’s wicked’. It’s generally me on my own or me and my brother and when we’re constantly writing and touring we kind of just log ideas and then have to go back and work on them, well that’s what we’ve done in the past. This time we decided to follow everything up all the time which was great fun. We wrote so much stuff for this. We’ve got surplus albums of completely different genres. The tour we’ve just done in Europe was probably the best musical tour I’ve ever done. We’ve got the band; we’ve got a drummer (Toby Couling) and we’ve got my brother playing a load of stuff. I think we’ve got just the right balance of enough of me on my own to keep everyone happy and then we’ve got all the new stuff that just sounds so freaking good live and I mean that’s what I wrote it for, I wrote it to be played live and I kind of wrote it with this drummer in mind. It’s so much fun!

You cover Major Lazer’s hit Get Free for the new album and the video see’s you cutting your iconic dreadlocks in what looks like one take for the video –

who’s idea was that and how hard was it to do once the camera was rolling? Was there a point that you thought it was a bad idea? Well I was going to cut them anyway so I was okay with that, I mean having to do it whilst lip-syncing and doing basically a kind of acting performance whilst doing it, well it was pretty immersive. It was when we first got there that it was utterly terrifying because I thought okay we’re cutting some hair off, it’s fine…got there and there was this light that was like 20ft wide in the middle of an aircraft hangar and just one wooden chair just sitting in the middle of it and I was like okay, this is going ahead. It just really reminded me of that scene in The Incredible Hulk when Nick Nolte and Eric Bana are siting opposite each other and it kind of had that same level of intensity to it and just this really weird tone to it. It was an intense experience. I think the song works really well with the video, I think they both elevate each other in a way.

You return to G Live and indeed you return to Guildford for a performance in support of your new album Human Love – when was the last time you were in town for either business or pleasure? I was in town very recently actually, I did a general Q & A at the ACM about the industry as a whole. Fascinating, really interesting actually. It’s weird, I always feel a bit guilty afterwards because I probably learn more than anyone else. It’s really interesting just hearing what questions people have, especially the guitar ones because you get these really, really good people coming along to these masterclasses and some of them are terrifying to me. They’re scary, I mean there’s a lot of amazing players there.

Are there any spots that you like to return to once you’re here in Guildford? I wrote a lot of the guitar parts for the first album just sitting down by the river behind the Electric Theatre. I just used to sit there with a guitar because it was quiet. There was one afternoon, I think it was Wednesday afternoons and I would have a four hour break, I lived quite far away so there was no way of going home and I would always just have these really long leisurely guitar based lunch breaks which were great fun.

See Newton Faulkner at G Live, Guildford on 12th April. For more information and tickets visit glive.co.uk Newton Faulkner’s new album Human Love is out now.

Talking to

AFRIKAN BOY By Alexander D’Arcy

APRIL 2016

ENTERTAINMENT

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment

He is the MC known for his seminal Grime classic, ‘One day I Went to Lidl’ and featured on a remix of M.I.A’s Grammy Hit ‘Paper Planes’; now Afrikan Boy (with a K) comes to Guildford to bring his Afro-Grime flavours to The Boileroom this April.

In your own words, for those that don’t know – who are you, what do you do, how would you describe your sound? For those that don’t know, my name’s Afrikan Boy; I’m a musician, businessman and educator. I would describe my sound as hybrid, rootsy, organic, Afro-Grime.

You come to The Boileroom in Guildford as part of a wider spring time tour – have you ever spent any time in Surrey or Guildford before? Do you know the area at all? I don’t know the area but I hope to have some time in the day to do a

workshop using drama and music in a college so I can feel the people and actually learn about the area.

What can people in Guildford expect on the night? Oh man, you’re going to definitely expect an experience, If you don’t know who I am and you’ve only heard me from ‘One Day I Went to Lidl’ you’re going find out what I’ve been up to. You’re going get to know me, I’m definitely going get to know you; there’s going to be loads of energy, you’re going to hear my new music, unreleased music as well as the tracks that you know. And I’m going to add a little twist in there as well and bring in some theatrical pieces. It’s definitely going be a unique experience.

You recently performed an impromptu show at the refugee camp in Calais, how did that come about? How was that experience for you? It was a unique experience for myself to be able to understand the story of these refugees coming in through their various journeys. In ‘One Day I Went to Lidl’, in the third verse I’m speaking about immigration…I’ve grown up around it so being able to be in a temporary place like that really helped shape my understanding of the situation. It was a dope gig, like the best gig I’ve done, so raw. It couldn’t have been any other way if I hadn’t of had the experiences I have had, you know going and performing in Sudan, performing in Algeria. That was a link. I knew that I could connect with them and it enabled them to loosen up and enjoy this momentary situation.

Your lyrical content usually has some kind of political or socio economic message – how important to you is it to communicate these messages to your listeners and to get those messages across? For me it’s important. I feel it’s important for artists to do what they want to do, just being able to appreciate the power and reach of my platform, of the music that

I create. If there’s a topic that’s there because it’s personal and its close, maybe say mental health and the treatment of patients within psychiatric wards and the medication that they give them. Yes I’m writing about it because I want everybody to know about it, but not necessarily you know, I’m not putting up a number at the end to say call this, I’m writing it because I’ve had an experience and I’m sharing that and I know other people will be able to relate to that in their own way. It’s a therapeutic thing to know that ‘okay, it’s not only me who’s going through this’.

What are your thoughts on the Grime scene really making its mark on the mainstream? It’s going through this amazing revival, that’s come like 10 years on from the point of me releasing stuff on MySpace. I see a lot of my inspirations like Kano and Wiley, my favourite MC’s from the golden era are all linking up. Eskimo Dance is a big ting now, it was a big ting then, but now you look at the line-up… it used to be full of good MC’s but now it’s full of headliners, you’ve got Kano, Skepta, JME, Wiley, Chipmunk, Lethal B. It’s a great scene and for me I’m definitely embracing it but I’m also still realizing why I am who I am in the scene. I think its dope.

Catch Afrikan Boy performing at The Boileroom, Guildford on April 27th For more information and tickets visit boileroom.net or afrikanboy.com

APRIL 2016

BACKYARD CAMPING In the last edition of our superb magazine I suggested that you go for a little adventure in your garden. Camping in your garden is great because it gives the kids a sense of adventure but gives you the comfort of knowing if the weather goes nuts or the kids decide it’s not for them, you don’t have to repack the car and drive 4 hours back home whilst consuming a luke-warm coffee that cost you £4.50

FIRST OF ALL YOU’LL NEED A GARDEN If you don’t have one then reading on may be a bit silly. Second of all, you need to find a good tent to keep you out of the elements. Tents are a little confusing because they’ll all shout at you that they’re the best and you need to fork out hundreds of pounds to stay dry and warm: This isn’t strictly true. Sure if you’re heading up Snowdon or Glencoe you need something a bit Gucci but here in Surrey that’s a bit unnecessary. All tents come with a confusing rating called Hydrostatic head. Simply, imagine you take a bit of the tent’s material and stretch it taught. Next put a tube on it and fill with water; the point the water starts leaking through is the fabric’s Hydrostatic head. The higher, the more waterproof it is. So, if you’re off up the mountains then yep you need a high level but not if you’re in the garden. Interesting huh? Yep, that’s 20 seconds you’ll never get back but moving on…

NEXT WE NEED SLEEPING BAGS Again, the outdoor world will fire weird and wonderful ratings to confuse you. A god 3 season sleeping bag is fine. I’m assuming if it’s minus 4 outside, you’re probably going to postpone the adventure. Throw in some pillows as well and also a sleeping mat or camp bed. So now you’ve got shelter sorted lets organise food.

FAMILY

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Family

FOODS particular to everyone but think treats because after all that’s what this is; an adventure treat. Think marshmallows, hot dogs, snacks, biscuits and lots of nice nibbles.

IF YOU BUILD A FIRE AND IT GETS OUT OF CONTROL IT’S ON YOU NOT US. DON’T BE AN IDIOT. The safest bet is to build a fire in a barbeque; it keeps it off the ground and contains it safely. If you build a fire. Check out the graphic on the various sizes of wood that will help you build a successful fire. The trick is to build your fire slowly and to add your kindling and fuel step by step. Don’t just chuck everything on and expect a result. Heed our advice and keep your camp warm until the early morn.

tinder

kindling

FUEL

Around the size of a pencil lead.

No thicker than your thumb

About as thick as your wrist

THE NEXT BIT IS DEFINITELY ADULTS ONLY. Fire. There’s no beating about the bush fire is dangerous but with sensible precautions and being sensible there’s nothing wrong with having one.

REMEMBER TO WRAP UP WARM and have

something to sit on. Sitting outside unprepared will see you cold really quick and it’ll ruin everything. So, set up the tent, make a fire and sit back with the kids under the stars and do weird things like talk, tell stories, play games; things with way more depth than modern telly, PlayStations and Xboxes.

Fleecy Frolics The annual spring celebration involving lambing, nature and all things countryside returns to Merrist Wood College on Sunday 17th April. Merrist Wood is one of the UKs premier agricultural colleges. This marvellous multi-award winning institution, specialising in the land-based industries, is one of the country’s finest. The campus, located just outside of Guildford, boasts masses of gorgeous land and is easily accessible, with excellent student resources all which create an enjoyable learning environment. Practical work is carried out on the extensive 280 hectare estate, with its woodlands, wetland features, livestock, grasslands etc. In other words, it’s the perfect place to hold an event based on that most spring-like of activities: lambing. Yes indeed, what better herald of spring is there than the soft bleating of lambs, with their bouncy enthusiasm and boundless energy? Well, the students and staff at Merrist Wood College are back for 2016, proudly showing off their new born lambs at the annual Fleecy frolics event.

And the students should be proud, for the college’s flock are there responsibility throughout the duration of the academic year. The hard work of the lambing season is made all the more bearable by the satisfaction and joy of the new members of the flock, which you and the kids will undoubtedly coo at to your heart’s content. Fleecy Frolics is a fantastic open day; expect craft demonstrations, chainsaw displays, fun activities and – of course – cuddling some of the little lambs. If you’re really lucky, you may even see some lambs being born. As well as all of this there will be craft demonstrations, stalls, woodland walks and crafts and plant sales. Finally you will not be wanting for sustenance to keep you walking around the grounds, with refreshments far and wide and even picnic areas should Mr Sun decide to play ball. So all in all expect a great day out for the kids, as they get to see how life on the farm works. Who knows, you could be inspiring a new generation of agriculturalist… Entry is just £6 for adults and £4 for children and concessions. Under twos go free and there is a Family ticket (2 adults, three kids) for just £15! Oh and parking is free…

A Couple of Things… While we want all and sundry to attend Fleecy Frolics, due to certain agricultural-based restrictions there are a couple of health warnings to adhere to. First of all women who are, or think they may be, pregnant MUST NOT attend this event. There is risk of disease amongst the lambs which can cause harm, including miscarriage. In the case of wet weather, please wear appropriate footwear as it can be muddy. All visitors should thoroughly wash their hands after touching any of the animals or areas where the animals are housed. Handwashing facilities are available in all areas. Finally there are no dogs allowed except for guide dogs.

IT ALL STARTS WITH A PERFECT RING… Seven brilliant cut diamonds basket claw set in the shape of a marquise, giving this impressive engagement ring more maximum sparkle. Surrey’s award winning independent jewellers Simon Pure have over 30 years’ experience in designing exquisite jewellery for discerning citizens, countywide and beyond. Specialising in unusual, quality and very pretty stones, owners Alix and Steve often travel to gemstone conventions across the globe to source the very best in precious stones; recently added to their collection are Tanzanite, Morganite and Fire Opal. All Simon Pure designs are made inhouse at their own workshop based in Smithbrook Kilns on the outskirts of Cranleigh. For the special occasion,

Simon Pure offer a bespoke service for tailor made wedding rings, designed to fit your engagement ring. Allow at least six weeks (ideally 8) for the rings to be made. This will allow for any size adjustments if necessary. To mark the occasion with your own words and memories why not get your favourite sweet nothing engraved? Bear in mind that this will take additional time. Simon Pure also advise trying the rings on before they are engraved to make sure the fit is perfect. Creative Director Steve Parsons told us, ‘We understand the importance of taking the time to choose the perfect wedding ring. Your wedding ring is an everyday reminder of your special day and the commitment you have made to each other ’

THE HALF MOON INN, KIRDFORD When it comes to the big day the most important thing is you; it’s not about your grandma who’s not much of a fan of the loud music and it’s not about your second cousin thrice removed who may or may not have had a peanut allergy the last time you saw them running around the paddling pool naked some fifteen years ago. No, the day is about you, your chosen loved one and of course making everybody feel as welcome and relaxed as possible so as to enjoy the big day. This is about organising a day, where of course people will feel welcome but also a day that you will remember for the rest of your living days, where you exclaimed to all who witnessed, “This is the man / woman who I love and I will be with forever”.

One such venue that may be able to facilitate this dream, as well as adding all sorts of extras that you never knew you wanted, but by golly they’re more than essential now, is the homely and hospitable countryside retreat of The Half Moon Inn in Kirdford which is just a stone’s throw away from the Surrey and Sussex border. The friendly team of Felicity, Ben and Tim will do everything in their power to ensure that you have the best day possible and that all the minutest of details that you have been fretting about for months, will be but a drop in the ocean compared to the unparalleled feeling of joy when you realise that you have just been part of the best wedding that you’ve ever been to. And it was yours!

w Ideas GIN TIN! LOCAL GINS

+ BESPOKE COCKTAILS= MUCH JOY

As well as the standard offering that one might expect from a well-stocked countryside tavern, to add that little something extra to the foreground of your picturesque landscape wedding, The Half Moon Inn are able to provide you with your very own Gin Tin! Hurrah! A mobile bar with a selection of bespoke Gin cocktails, made from local gins.

OUTSIDE BLESSING If you’ve chosen to hold your big day at The Half Moon, chance are you may have done the official business in the preceding few hours, somewhere in a lacklustre registry office in a town, held by a person that you are likely to feel not too familiar with. This is your big day guys. Fill it with love and with those whom love you. Why not do your thing officially in the registry office in town and then head to your chosen venue (The Half Moon Inn) where the prettiest of outside ceremony awaits you, hay bales and all! Why not ask a friend or family member to conduct the blessing?

PERSONALISED ICE CREAM If a summertime wedding is on the agenda and if all the relevant fingers and toes have been crossed, then it is supposable that the sun may indeed be shining in all its glory come your big day. Little pots of personalised ice cream are much more affordable than one might think, whilst also providing that refreshment. Of course The Half Moon can facilitate this wish should you so desire. Why not ask for the Gin and Tonic sorbet to go with your gin cocktails?

47

w PICK YOUR OWN MENU: WHY NOT ASK YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT? Naturally the food on offer on The Half Moon Inn’s menu is outstanding, seasonal and local, however, should you want something truly personal to you and your spouse, why not enlist the help of your favourite restaurant and get your favourite dishes cooked up for your guests? It certainly doesn’t hurt to enquire about chef’s availability and whether they would be interested.

THE GUEST BOOK If you want a truly memorable keepsake from your wedding that will serve as a constant reminder of how much your family and friends love you, why not source yourself a second hand coffee table? Give it a sand down and a quick spruce; purchase a selection of coloured permanent markers and then let your guests sign it, colour it and paint pretty pictures of you and your beloved sitting in a tree K.I.S.S.I.N.G. The finished article can then be glossed and varnished ready to become a permanent fixture in your homestead. Love long and prosper!

TREASURE HUNT FOR THE KIDS It should be a given that you, your pals and your fam are going to be having a riot with all the fun and frolics that you have planned; but what about the children? Weddings might seem fun to us grown up folk, but have you thought about what the day looks like for the little ones in your life? ‘Sit down here’, ‘sit down there’, ‘let your long lost auntie douse you in her surplus perfume and lather you in her bright red lipstick!’ Let the kids have as much fun as you and provide them with a mammoth treasure hunt complete with treasure a plenty. The garden at The Half Moon is as such that grown up’s can play to the front of the pub and the kids can conquer the back garden and the giant chess set.

CAKE…LOTS OF CAKE F.A.O Sweet Tooth’s: There is much to be said for the traditional wedding cake. There is also lots to be said for multiplying that one official cake into a plethora of your favourite baked goods, nestled neatly onto an official ‘Cake Table’. Why not ask a selection of your guests (or perhaps stipulate it on your wedding invitations), to bring in tow their own favourite cake. Lemon drizzle, Coffee and Walnut, Chocolate Pecan Pie, the list is endless.

CAKE, GLORIOUS CAKE Based in Haslemere, Trevor Cruickshank is an expert in French Patisserie as well as being an award-winning chef with over twenty years of culinary experience. When we think of a wedding cake, many of us will imagine the traditional style – a tiered fruitcake wedding cake with white icing and perhaps some delicate fresh or sugar flowers. While this traditional style wedding cake remains popular, there are plenty of others to choose from. The contemporary version of a traditional wedding cake might feature coloured icing and detailed sugar decoration to fit the colour scheme and style of the wedding.

With a bit of patience these chorizo, orange, and black olive crunchy delights are truly excellent while watching the sun going down with a cold beer, or in reality watching the rain hammer it down on another glorious British summer’s day….with a beer. You are going to have to bear with me on the flavour combination here. You probably raised an eyebrow at the orange but it brings a lovely mellow citrus note that balances the strength of the black olives and chorizo. It is also packed with blanched almonds, sundried tomatoes, and ewe’s cheese coated in Spanish rosemary. The recipe will make up 30 odd biscuits and you achieve that amazing crunch by baking it in 3 large sausage shapes, removing it to cool and then slicing into slices and baking again to dry it out. Like I said, it takes a little longer than you average biscuit. But then again, this is no ordinary biscuit! Happy eating!

CELLAR MAGNEVAL Since opening its doors in Woking in 2013, Cellar Magneval has proven to be a hugely welcome addition to the town’s landscape. Less than three years later and now with an additional bar in Fleet and shop in Ripley, the enthusiasm for these fantastic venues has shown no bounds.

French and British cheeses as seasonal as possible, and in particular will have some beautiful new goat’s cheeses to accompany these wines. Cellar Magneval will also be offering these new wines by the glass so be sure to pop in to try these new delights!

Excitingly, Thierry has just made and released his own 2015 Bout D’Chou reserves in each colour. The white offers quite a melange of varieties with a lovely confit of lemon on the nose and hints of almonds. The red manages to capture the complex fruit flavours that Bout D’Chou possesses in spades. And finally the rose, which offers a fullness of flavour to a lovely light, delicate, pale and pretty tipple.

At Cellar Magneval they like to think (read: drink) seasonally, keeping their range as fresh and exciting as possible and try to match the flavours of the seasons together. They will be bringing in some new and exciting wines from Sauvignon blancs with a little twist to some fabulous lighter reds from the Loire Valley.

April 30th 2016

Now in its third year, Dash of Colour is a hugely popular fundraising event which sees participants run a 5k route, showered at every kilometre mark with powder paint to symbolise the colour which Phyllis Tuckwell brings to the lives of its patients and their relatives. It is held in the beautiful grounds of Frimley Lodge Park, in Frimley Green, and will take place this year on Saturday 3rd September.

One of the biggest events of the year at Brooklands celebrating the UK’s obsession with all things Italian. Test Dummy: DDMIX ‘Dad dancing’ is a phrase coined by young, embarrassed children to describe their drunk, rhythm-less, dancefloorhogging fathers toe-tapping with no co-ordination to the Pet Shop Boys’ Go West with their tie around their heads like an office-based Rambo. As it happens, it also turns out to be a pretty apt description of me at my first DDMIX class in Godalming last month. By Tayler Willson

I’ve clocked myself dancing before in a reflection or have seen videos and, believe me when I say, there aren’t many times I’ve felt lower (and that’s coming from someone who had to go topless in January’s The Guide 2 Surrey Magazine). Regardless of this and of the fact I knew one of the Ds in DDMIX stood for Dance, I went for it.

instructor for the evening, Carly Rolfe, and warn her that I’m a really terrible dancer. The fact I couldn’t remember the last time I had danced sober did, though, give me some hope; a hope that maybe I wasn’t as bad at jiving when I wasn’t clutching an overpriced £5 vodka and lemonade. Who knows?

Firstly, let me explain exactly what DDMIX is: it stands for Diverse Dance Mix and the aim is to get people moving without being intimidated by the word ‘dance’ or the technicality of the steps. With there being literally loads of types of dance and movement in this huge, big world of ours, the probability of a class becoming mundane is highly unlikely.

We started to warm up to some pretty salsa-y music and already I was feeling pretty into it. Copying Carly and the rest of the class as best as I could, but throwing in that added dad vibe. The Salsa music then switched to African music, to Flamenco, to Bollywood, to the Charleston (my favourite). With the ever-changing track and musical feel, the pace and intensity of the class never became stagnant, we were always evolving and exploring different styles and cultures. The 2-3 minute genres are combined to form numerous 45-50 minute programs and with a variety of aerobic levels and complexity.

Famous Ballerina Darcey Bussell, the co-founder of DDMIX, wanted to create a program using segments of dance from around the world, providing great variety with a western touch. Given her deep interest in all forms of dance and having danced nearly all genres from her classical ballet base, in 2013 the DDMIX adventure began. She contacted her good friend and talented choreographer and dancer Nathan Clarke, with whom she has worked on Viva La Diva, Darcey Dances Hollywood and the closing ceremony of the London Olympics. On hearing her idea Nathan agreed to join Darcey and they started working on the choreography for the first DDMIX. Dance-based fitness has become increasingly popular in recent years – especially with the mega-rise of Zumba - and many believe it’s the best, and most enjoyable, way of getting into shape. By participating in dance, you can achieve your goals by not looking upon exercise as a chore. Group exercise classes with noncorrectional instruction, that are fun and all inclusive. This was my jam. My bread and butter. My thang. I arrived with fifteen minutes to spare, a period that gave me the chance to meet my

As we entered the final stages of the class (and post one of the best “twerks” this side of Haslemere thanks to yours truly), I was spent. I was at dance’s mercy and I loved it. I was dance’s bit on the side, its dirty piece of meat. Dance had picked me up, thrown me around and I didn’t care. I had been worked from head-to-toe and all to the magical beats of world music. If you’re looking for an all-round, full-body workout that’s both fun and beneficial – as well as pretty damn cheap - it’s probably worth delving into the world of Diverse Dance Mix. As well as Carly’s Godalming class, DDMIX operates all over the county. Classes can be found in Guildford, Farnham, Kingston, Chertsey and loads more. Oh, and don’t let the word ‘dance’ phase you, it’s dance but so much more. Preach.

SURREY Storm NEWS:

Surrey Storm’s Tamsin Greenway has become the new Head Coach of England’s U21 side ahead of the 2017 World Championships in Botswana next summer. It was due to technical issues arising with the current Home Office secondary employment visa policy that Greenway’s predecessor, Dan Ryan, step down from his position in the U21 Roses. Former England mid-courter, Greenway, said upon taking on the role: “It’s a real honour to be given an opportunity to take this on, even under the unfortunate circumstances. “I am really looking forward to working with our incredible young talent on the journey to the World Youth’s next summer, as well as help to create and develop England’s future netball stars.” Greenway held praise for a number of former Storm team mates, too, who have potential to be “future England stars”: “At Storm at the minute we have Rhea Dixon and Fran Williams, I have been really impressed by some of Thunder and the Jets

girls, There’s so many all around and I think that that’s the exciting thing there’s a whole new blend of players that are getting exposure at Super League. “Even players that are getting occasional minutes like Alana John at Bath, loads at Mavericks and that’s making it exciting when you look through the squad there’s real talent gagging to get on court and show what they can do. Our first training camp is in a couple of weeks and it will be really interesting to see them all in an environment outside of their clubs and I am really looking forward to that.” Storm’s final home game of the season comes on April 16th where they face title rivals Manchester Thunder. Scorchers NEWS: Coach Creon Discusses Scorchers’ Topsy-Turvy BBL Season as they Head into the Final Straight Still in Search of a Play-Off Position

A vital 74-73 win away at Manchester Giants the night before a chat with Creon Raftopoulos seemed to leave the Zimbabwean coach in an optimistic mood about Surrey Scorchers’ play-off chances ahead of the few remaining games. The win, their first since the beginning of February (eight games), lifted his side off of the foot of the table to keep their play-off hopes alive. Coach Creon, however, admitted that he never lost hope and is confident they have enough quality to push on and finish in the play-offs. “We’ve been through a tough spell on and off the court. We’ve had players coming and going and it’s not always easy when you’re having to chop and change your roster. But now we have a good solid side, we may not have as much depth as other sides in the league, but we certainly now have the quality to compete and make the play-offs. I expect us to push on from the win against [Manchester] Giants.” Scorchers have endured quite the roller-coaster campaign thus far. An impressive start to the season was followed by a run that saw them winless in the league for nearly two months. This baron run resulted in a number of changes to the roster, most notably the arrival of K.C. Ross-Miller, an addition that Coach Creon believes could save his side’s season. “When K.C. came in, he had a lot of adapting to do. Not only did he have to change his style of play to the way the team plays, he had to get used to the area. He came over here from the U.S. and it’s an entirely different lifestyle. Since Christmas, though, he’s been one of the stand out performers in the league for me. He – along with a few others – have always kept us within touching distance of the play-offs and have never let us lose faith in our ability.”

On being asked whether this season would be deemed a failure should his side not reach the play-offs, Coach Creon wanted to take the opportunity to remind the fans of the last two campaigns for the Surrey Sports Park-based side: “At the start of the season I said my main goals were to get local basketball fans back on board and supporting Scorchers – I think we’ve achieved that. Another goal was to entertain crowds, and whether it’s been in a win or a loss I think we’ve always kept our crowds entertained. “So to say the season is a failure would be too far, because they were the main goals. Play-offs were, and still are, a goal, because what would be the point if we had no ambition? We’ve a few games left and I’m confident we can make it. We’ll just wait and see.” Scorchers’ final home game against Leeds Force is at 15:00PM on April 17th, for more information and details on how to get tickets, visit: www.surreyscorchers.co.uk/tickets

SURREY Smashers NEWS: Smashers Fall Short Despite Final Match Night Win Surrey Smashers bowed out of the 2015/16 AJ Bell National Badminton League season with a superb 3-2 win over the Birmingham Lions on Monday night, missing out on a semi-final spot by a single match point. All eyes were on the performance of last year’s regular season winners, who needed a big result live on Sky Sports if they were to reach the Finals Day in May. The season as a whole, however, will be one that disappoints Smashers after an impressive campaign the year before. Following an opening night 4-1 win over MK Badminton at Surrey Sports Park back in November, it looked as if Smashers were picking up where they’d left off.

Three consecutive 4-1 defeats at the hands of Team Derby, Loughborough Sport and Nottingham University, though, left Smashers with it all to do on the final night – as well as hoping other results went their way. Despite the 3-2 victory – a light consolation for Chris Langridge and co – Smashers finished in fifth place, missing out on May’s finals by just the one point. Keep an eye on The Guide 2 Surrey Sport’s pages throughout the summer for Smashers news as well as some expected incoming and outgoings.

Held in Woking at the offices of local marketing agency Something Big, around 100 attendees listened to inspiring words from guest speakers Julianne Ponan of Creative Nature, Annabel Jones from ADP UK, Pathfinder’s Jessica Van Thiel, and Robyn Dunwoodie of Miller Brands. Each shared their career journey and attributed much of their success to strong roles models – from mums and dads to bosses and colleagues – and sheer determination. Key messages from the evening included don’t let fear stop you, go for your goals, and embrace change. The top 50 BWiS Rising Stars Young Business Women in Surrey 2016 list was then revealed, which this year focused on the county’s younger (aged under 30) businesswomen. In alphabetical order by surname, the top 10 2016 BWiS Rising Stars are: Emily Bollon – Motivation by Music Yvonne Bryce – The Knights Group Emily Chalkley – Charles Russell Speechleys Jessica Edgar – Stars Performing Arts Laura Goodridge – McLaren Automotive Jade Hibbins – Bam Nuttall Cheri Howieson – ADP UK Hannah Johnson – McLaren Automotive Katelyn Silver – Charles Russell Speechleys Alexandra Trebilco – McLaren Automotive Find out more at businesswomeninsurrey.co.uk

TO BREXIT OR NOT TO BREXIT? By Will De Fazio-Saunders

To Brexit, or not

to Brexit that is the question (facing the UK electorate on 23 June 2016). Whether you are currently leaning, with the Prime Minister David Cameron, towards the view that ‘tis Nobler to suffer the Slings and Arrows of the more outrageous terms of our EU membership in order to gain the benefits, or whether, like the Mayor of London Boris Johnson, you would rather take Arms (metaphorically) against the (Mediterranean) Sea of troubles and, by opposing, end our EU

membership[1], you have another three or so months to decide. Whatever your view, the forthcoming referendum is a momentous choice for the UK electorate, and it is arguably one’s democratic duty to arm oneself with as much knowledge as possible in order to make a fully informed decision. It is to that end that I would like to bring to your attention some potential implications of Brexit on employment law in England and Wales.

First, a (brief) history lesson: History of EEC and EU employment legislation 1. The EU (formerly the EEC) has issued directives relating to employment and labour law since the 1970s, and Britain has incorporated more than

four decades-worth of directives from Brussels within corresponding domestic legislation.

2. Early labour law directives regarding collective redundancies, transfers of undertakings and insolvency were adopted using legal bases on health and safety at work, and completing the internal market. 3. Since the 1997 Treaty of Amsterdam, the primary legal base for adopting such employment legislation became social policy. 4. The Lisbon Treaty 2007 incorporated the Charter of Fundamental Rights into EU primary law, and a number of the Charter’s provisions (which include human dignity, basic freedoms, equality, solidarity, citizens’ rights and justice) are relevant to UK employment law.

EU employment law covers a range of issues, including parental leave, agency workers, health and safety at work, discrimination and equality. Powers to legislate for ‘social protection’ have been provided, but not used as of yet.

(Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2000;

EU employment legislation is particularly controversial since there are disagreements as to whether employment law should be a competence of the EU. On the one hand, some argue that employment law, along with other social policy, is outside the scope of the internal economic market which the EEC was formed to create (and to which Britain signed up in 1973).

• the Parental Leave Directive;

On the other hand, it could be argued that setting requirements for labour and employment law creates a framework, and a level-playing field, for the internal market.

Some of the EU directives and employment law instruments include:

• the Working Time Directive, restricting night work, requiring regular rest breaks and providing for minimum annual leave; • the Temporary Agency Workers Directive, giving agency workers the same basic working and employment conditions as directlyrecruited workers after a specific period; • the Acquired Rights Directive, providing (through TUPE) that employees keep the same terms and conditions of employment after a business sale or take-over; • the Part Time Employees

• the Fixed Term Employees (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2002; • the Pregnant Workers’ Directive; • the Health and Safety of Atypical Workers Directive; • the Health and Safety Framework Directive; • the Directive on Minimum Safety and Health Requirements; • the Directive on Collective Redundancies; and, • the Directive on Informing and Consulting Employees.

The impact of the EU legislation on the UK is a highly complex and controversial subject touching on issues of culture, proportionality and competence, and EU employment law is no exception. UK businesses are subjected to various requirements as a result of EU legislation. In respect of these requirements, one person’s important guarantee for employees’ rights is another person’s ‘red tape’. There are also historical cultural differences between continental Europe and the UK, with the former traditionally favouring collective agreements and the latter preferring more individualised relationships between employer and employee. Disputes abound as to whether these requirements have had economic benefits by harmonising the internal market, or if these requirements have had a ‘chilling effect’ on free trade and in particular have strangulated smaller and medium sized-businesses (SMEs).

Some would also argue that the UK would have introduced such measures regardless of EU involvement, and point out that Britain has passed laws which go further than strictly required by directives from Brussels. Ultimately, since there are no conclusive figures one way or the other, on which side of the fence you come down is your decision and yours alone, but it is worth considering in full all of the arguments on either side before deciding which way to cast your vote. Of course, until June 23, you are free to procrastinate to your heart’s content. Just like a certain fictitious Prince of Denmark. Of course….if the Russians get involved in the debate….it may be closer to ‘The Winters Tale’…. Brexit pursued by a Bear….
