Your Community News UNIVERSITY OF SURREY PROFESSOR AWARDED STEPHEN HAWKING MEDAL FOR SCIENCE COMMUNICATION Surrey physicist, Jim Al-Khalili OBE has been awarded the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication Professor Al-Khalili has been awarded the inaugural medal at the STARMUS International Science and Arts Festival in Tenerife on the 29th June. The medal acknowledges the work of people who promote the public awareness of science through different media platforms. Stephen Hawking will be presenting the medal, along with STARMUS founder Garik Israelian; Alexei Leonov and Brian May in a special ceremony on the 29th June. Professor Al-Khalili said “It is a huge honour to have received the very first Stephen Hawking Science Communication Medal. Bringing cutting-edge scientific research findings to life has always drawn me to science communication. To me, doing the research is only half the job- you also need to tell people about it. That is why I try to do both as a lecturer and broadcaster” In 1989, Al-Khalili received his PhD from Surrey in theoretical nuclear physics and is now a lecturer and professor of physics there. As well as having many honorary degrees from UK universities, he is also an elected fellow of the Institute of Physics, honorary fellow of the British Science Association and has received the Royal Society Michael Faraday Medal and the Institute of Physics Kelvin Medal. In 2007, he received an OBE for ‘services to science’. He is a well-known science communicator, broadcaster and author and presents the weekly BBC Radio 4 programme The Life Scientific as well as his academic work. Professor Stephen Hawking said “Professor Al-Khalili is the very worthy recipient in the science category [one of 3- science, art and film]. This has been for his treatment of complex physics concepts through science documentaries, most recently, The Secrets of Quantam Physics.” For more information, visit surrey.ac.uk

Recently, it has focused on vulnerable young people and promoting the range of apprenticeships out there.

The Council deputy leader, Peter Martin said “We will do all we can to ensure our local businesses – large and small – continue to prosper and continue to offer more and more opportunities for jobs and careers.”

The Council would like to stimulate economic growth and to add

WALK FOR WATTS

SPACE JUNK CLEAN-UP TEST FROM SURREY SPACE CENTRE

Walk for Watts 2016 is back! The walking charity fundraiser- this year in aid of Watts Chapel- will take place on Saturday 20th August.

Space junk could be a huge problem- it is orbiting earth at thousands of miles per hour and, until it can be removed, a whole generation may be grounded… The test mission, called RemoveDEBRIS, will trial the world’s first low cost space litter-picking technology. It will be showcased at the Royal Society Summer Science Show, opening this week and will aim to clear 7,000 tonnes of debris and junk. The mission is led by Surrey Space Centre and is funded by the European Commission. It has a range of international sponsors including: SSTL (Surrey Satellite Technology Limited), Airbus DS Germany, Airbus DS France and Airbus DS UK. The team at RemoveDEBRIS warns that space junk can cause serious problems- junk that’s 10cm across could completely destroy an entire space station. It could also ground a generation of space explorers and satellites as it could become too dangerous to send anything through that atmosphere until it is cleaned up. Project Manager, Dr Jason Forshaw, says that “The international community needs to start working together now to remove space junk. The space around earth is part of the earth’s environment and keeping it clean is a common responsibility. Our mission, RemoveDEBRIS, is one of the first concerted efforts to pioneer future technologies to remove space junk.”

For your everyday walkers, there is a 3.5 mile woodland walk, starting at the Artist’s Village (£3 entry) and for your extreme long-distance walkers, there is a half-marathon (13 mile, £10 entry) which begins on Ranmore Common and both go along the scenic, medieval Pilgrim’s way. Safeguard Coaches will be transporting people to the start of the half-marathon walk. The Watts Gallery Chapel is in urgent need of repair and conservation work and the staff will support and encourage walkers to reach the suggested fundraising target of £100. The walk is through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and you are welcome to bring family, friends and dogs for moral support! The shorter walk finishes at Loseley Park where family members are invited to complete the Binky Bear trail and to meet the bear when they get back to the Artist’s Village. Refreshments are available at several points along the way. For more information, contact developmentofficer@wattsgallery.org.uk

RECYCLE FOR SURREY Gone are the days when one was required to buy purpose made bags to recycle your food waste as you can now line your food waste caddy with plastic bags or liners, which makes it easier, cheaper and cleaner to recycle your food waste.

micro-organisms to break down the food waste from your caddy in the absence of oxygen to create power and fertiliser. Once all the electricity has been produced, a liquid fertiliser is left which is used in farming.

You can use anything from old shopping bags to bread or salad bags – and you can continue to use newspaper or leftover compostable liners but please don’t include black bin bags or other food packaging – it’s not cool, clean or clever.

Surrey produces almost 80,000 tonnes of food waste a year, if all of this was collected from caddies, it would generate enough electricity to power 10,000 homes for a whole year!

Your district or borough council will collect your food waste each week along with your other waste or recycling. Once collected, your food waste is then turned into energy and fertiliser during a process called anaerobic digestion. Anaerobic digestion uses

Food waste is collected from your outside food waste bin every week on the same day as your rubbish or recycling. For more information visit recycleforsurrey.org.uk

7 August provides the perfect opportunity for long days spent getting lost amongst the plethora of natural landscapes that

1

CHILWORTH GUNPOWDER MILLS Built over 300 years ago, the ruined Gunpowder Mills of Chilworth give a glimpse into the working landscape of Surrey. Once upon a time it was the sole legal producer of gunpowder to the King in England.

4

MAYFIELD LAVENDER This organic lavender farm in Banstead is one of the most awe inspiring sights to be found in Surrey. Rows upon rows of gorgeous lavender fill your vision and lift your senses.

2

DEVIL’S PUNCHBOWL One of the larger wonderlands to get lost in, this National Trust land is brimming with wildlife and walking routes.

3

THE RIVER WEY Discover the waterways and the wildlife that exists on its banks. The River Wey has some great spots along the way to hop off and have a wander; why not hire a boat from Farncombe Boat House and while away your afternoon on The Wey

PAINSHILL PARK Once upon a time a playground for the rich and famous, it’s hard to believe that Painshill Park could be anything other than a figment of your imagination. This gorgeous landscaped park provides scenic views aplenty complete with its famed crystal grotto for you to explore.

6

PEWLEY DOWNS Forming part of the North Downs, Pewley is one of those spots that wills your return again and again. A mixture of woodland and hills with stunning views.

8

ST. CATHERINES Between Guildford and Godalming is the ancient site of St. Catherine’s Chapel sat atop of its namesake St.Catherines Hill. Scurry up the steep sandbanks on the edge of the River Wey and finish at the top of the hill for views looking across Guildford.

7

SILENT POOL One of the more well know spots in Surrey, Silent Pool has a mystical history and an eerie calmness to the water (hence Silent Pool). Explore the area and try the climb to the top of the hill for more breathtakingly gorgeous sights of this fine county.

9

WAGGONERS WELLS Just beyond the Devil’s Punchbowl lies one of our favourite wonderlands; the fairy tale setting of Waggoners Wells. Three man made ponds that cascade into one another, surrounded by gorgeous woodland that acts as a shady retreat in the summer months and then becomes a cacophony of colour come the Autumn.

We in Surrey have a natural affinity with all things extra-terrestrial (and the vast emptiness that it dwells within). Surrey Space Centre, based at the university, and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd are global pioneers of space missions. So now you know. But this is all extremely advanced stuff. Let’s bring it back to what helps shape this level of genius from a young age; the love of space and science created by sci-fi movies, books and events. Like the very one RHS Garden Wisley will be holding throughout the summer holidays… Each week, your budding little scientist will learn different things about space with free (that’s right) daily activities for all the family including gardening, music, arts & crafts and a summer garden trail to find out what an astronaut needs to survive on a mission.

AT RHS GARDEN WISLEY

So what does each week entail? Let’s find out, rocketeers…

Stars

Comets

Anyone else read the word ‘stars’ in Prof. Brian Cox’s soft northern lilt? Just us? Anyway, week one of ‘Rocket Science’ is about those most massive of celestial spheres.

Maybe don’t put the frighteners up them by saying that we could all be obliterated by a comet at any moment and instead take them down to Wisley to offer them a more genteel introduction.

Throughout this week your wee ones can help the Wisley team construct a giant solar system for display, learn how to take Hebe ‘Blue Star’ cuttings and grow new plants, craft a star out of willow and much much more.

15th to 21st August

Week 4

Week 1

25th to 31st July

Rockets & Time

Plants in Space

If you’re children are showing signs of being future rocket men/women, then this is the week for them. That and the indisputable link between space and time woven into the very fabric of existence – but that might go over their wee heads.

We’re thinking ‘The Martian’ at this point, but when your kids are learning all about plants from ‘Planet Zork’, we feel that accuracy won’t be too important to them. Get them green-fingered and full of inquisitiveness, we say…

22nd to 28th August

Week 5

1st to 7th August

Week 2

You know the drill – crafting, storytelling, music and cookery, all with a giant orbiting rock-based theme. Mustard.

The beginning of August sees them learning how to take Euonymus japonicus ‘Green Rocket’ cuttings and grow new plants, make their own rocket biscuits, sandwiches and sweets, hear stories and even craft their own rockets…

Planets

Gravity

This scribe has been watching early morning repeats of 90s sitcom classic ‘3rd Rock from the Sun’, so the theme tune (complete with space-themed montage) runs through my head at the very thought of planets now. That useless anecdote aside, the planets in our solar system (and way, way beyond) are fascinating – and this is the week for the youngsters to learn all about them.

Did you know that gravity is in fact the weakest force? It’s true. The entire earth’s force is pulling you towards it, and yet you can pick up stuff from the floor and carry it. It’s amazing.

Creating them will be one such way to explain their existence, as well as storytelling and ‘red planet’ cuttings (and more). Interesting…

29th to 31st August

Week 6

Week 3

8th to 14th August

Anyway for the final few days of Rocket Science at Wisley, your mini Hawking will be learning all about gravity while getting horticultural. Wonderful.

Naturally we’re merely scratching the surface. Find out more about the events at RHS Garden Wisley by visiting rhs.org.uk

AUGUST 2016

Wild Camping Over the last few issues we've touched on getting out, rebelling against health and safety and returning to good old fashioned fun. Well this month I thought we could go on a real family adventure: Wild Camping. As usual there will be 1000 people sucking their teeth saying that it’s not allowed and you shouldn’t do it so I’ll start with a little basic legality to cover my backside rather than yours. The bottom line is that without the land owner’s permission, camping just anywhere is trespassing. There are grey areas though. In Scotland the right to wild camp in open access areas is enshrined in law and in some areas of Dartmoor it is also allowed. The other greyish area is mountains or hills. The generally accepted rule is that you can wild camp above 600 feet without the landowner’s permission as long as you set up at dusk and break camp (read: bugger off) at dawn. The logic being that if you’re stuck up Corn Du in a blizzard you shouldn’t be expected to trek down to the farm at Cwm-Llwch and ask if it’s cool to camp.

So in essence, here are the rules for Wild Camping.

WHERE: Scotland: yes. Dartmoor: sort of. The hills and mountains of the UK: again, yeah should be ok. DON'T: Start a fire, get a camping cooker. DON'T: Litter. Don't be a tosser, take it home. DO:

Set up late, choose a low profile tent; wild camping is about a small indiscreet camp that will go unnoticed. Being unnoticed isn't just about people; wildlife is much easier to watch and enjoy if you haven't scared everything away.

DO:

Tell people your route.

DON'T: Be a fool; if someone turns up, says you need to move on, apologise and move on.

ROUTE Think of a good circular route which starts from a car park and ends at the same car park, with somewhere along the way to set up a camp. Once that’s sorted you need to get an ordnance survey map of the area and photocopy the area of your route with the said route marked on it. Pin this to the wall/fridge/notice board in the kitchen and let your partner or friends know about your plans. Choose waypoints along the route and give them names. You should plan to phone at each waypoint. Talk about when you’re going and when you expect to be back so that if you and little Hugo don’t turn up, the missus can let the right people know. Or not, if she hates you.

FAMILY

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Family

kit

Here’s a little acronym that always helps when sorting out a trip:

plan

P L A N

is for Protection: This means your protection from the elements i.e. a tent. You need a tent that’s low profile and not a bright crazy colour is for Location: Know where you are and how you can set up a safe camp. is for acquisition: How are you going to “acquire” your food and water? Really the answer is you’ll have to carry what you need. is for Navigation: How are you getting to and from where you’re going? A map and compass are essential; don’t rely on apps and phones simply because a map and compass won’t run out of batteries, ever.

The biggest difference between this and “normal” camping is that you have to carry most stuff. The kid can carry a bit but not too much, after all there’s no point in ruining the enjoyment of it. They’ll never want to do it again. Food-wise you need three square meals a day, some moral snacks for the journey. Water is tricky: you need at least a litre water per person per day, just for drinking and then you need a little more to cook with. Water will be the single heaviest thing you’ll have to carry. Here’s a breakdown of essentials.

• • • • • • • • • • • • •

Tent Sleeping bags A rucksack big enough for all the stuff preferably with an internal frame. For kids, Deuter do a great rucksack called the Fox 30 for kids that’s adjustable so they can grow with them. Map and Compass Waterproofs (this is the UK) Camping stove Cooking utensils Change of clothes A Phone A portable charger for said phone Good walking boots Extra layers (this is the UK) Sun Cream (you never know)

PREP TO TREK Heading out to the hills with your offspring in tow is a fantastic way to get everyone out enjoying the fresh air and beautiful scenery. Pokémon Go, you may have to argue, is all well and good but they’ll miss all that countryside glory if their face is stuck in a phone screen. Having said that, it could be a bad idea to hit the slopes of a serious hill without giving your body and that of your child’s a bit of an idea what’s ahead. So let’s use our county as a training ground and tackle Surrey’s three “peaks”. We have three high peaks in the county: Box Hill, Holmbury Hill and Leith Hill. All three are accessible from car parks where you can head out for a half day or full day’s walk.

Box Hill This walk starts from the National Trust visitor Centre at Box Hill. It’s a great walk that will give your legs a good idea on what to expect. Also it takes in some amazing scenery as well. Full details can be found on the National Trust website at www.nationaltrust.org.uk

Holmbury Hill Another lovely walk and actually a little less strenuous than Box Hill. The route follows woodland paths and tracks, with a steep descent to reach Holmbury St Mary and a steady climb after. The view from the Cairn at the top is amazing. Check out www.friendsofthehurtwood.co.uk

Leith Hill The list is not everything and you’ll notice that I haven’t put things like food and water on there. Frankly, if you get all the way to the Brecon Beacons having not packed food because I didn’t tell you to, you deserve it. Head over to Trek Hire in Shere village. They have all the stuff you could need for sale but also for hire if you feel you should test before you commit to the process. Also, they are great for advice and they’ve learned more about trekking and expeditions than you and I will ever know. Seriously, really great guys. www.trekhireuk.com

Leith Hill is one of my favourite places. One side of the Hill is very gentle while the other is really quite steep. The real beauty of the Hill, other than the view from the top, is the small café hidden in the walls of the tower, open all year around until 3pm. Visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/leith-hill

If cycling’s your thing, one of the best routes in the area is the classic Downs Link, which (as the name suggests) links the North and the South Downs. The route officially starts on St. Martha’s Hill on the outskirts of Guildford, but if you’d prefer a level path, you can pick it up at Shalford and continue through Bramley and beyond.

Surrey Food, Farm and Drink Festival 27th August – 2nd September We love the Surrey Farm, Food and Drink Festival’s unique approach to celebrating the best food producers in Surrey. Instead of a fixed site, the festival offers a programme of farm walks and events designed to help bridge the gulf of understanding between farmers and the public. These walks enable curious foodies to go behind the scenes and see how dairy and beef cattle and sheep are managed, how crops are grown and how conservation measures work alongside modern agriculture. There is often the chance for people to taste, and to buy produce from the farm gate – anything from fresh ice cream to sausages that they have witnessed being made. The walks themselves are free. The week, organised by Surrey County Agricultural Society, has become so successful since its launch in 2001 that it’s become an established feature of the autumn farming calendar. And if you love local food, then it certainly deserves to be on yours too! So far the event includes visits to Imbhams Farm in Haslemere and tours of Silent Pool Distillers and Kingfisher Farm’s Watercress, but many more will have been added by the time we go to press. www.surreycountyshow.co.uk

FIVE of the Best Surrey Butchers Summer’s finally hitting its stride which can only mean that it’s time to fire up the barbie and start cooking up some serious ‘cue’. Which also means we’re going to need some serious meat... Now, if only Surrey had some super awesome butcher’s shops, masters of their trade who understand exactly what their carnivorous clientele are looking for, what they might not but should, and how to turn that midweek meal, Sunday roast or barbecue into something truly amazing… Readers, we give you six of the best butchers near you...

Kilfeather & Dumbrill, Bramley

Rawlings of Cranleigh

5 High St, Bramley, Surrey GU5 0HB | 01483 898454

68 High St, Cranleigh GU6 8AG | 01483 274321

Guildford types will know this company best for their mobile butcher’s stall and its cheery presence on North Street every Friday and Saturday. But just a few miles down the road in lovely Bramley sits the mothership: Kilfeather & Dumbrill’s gleaming butchers shop.

Walk into Rawlings and prepare to be immobilised by choice. The sheer range of fabulous meat and poultry products, all handmade on site to original recipes, is slightly breathtaking. Succulent Aberdeen Angus beef from Scotland nudge up to superb local free range pork from Surrey and Sussex and lamb from Bramley. It’s that dedication to quality that has served them well over three decades, and seen them survive where many butchers haven’t been so fortunate.

Despite only being in the village for just over two years, the shop manages to conjure both the spell of a traditional butcher’s shop with a modern outlook and ideas. Aside from some fantastic locally sourced beef, pork, lamb and poultry, the shop sells a range of 30 cheeses and variety of condiments and other yummy goods. What’s Hot: Scotch steak truckle: An irresistible little bundle of beef wrapped in bacon with a centre of oozing camembert, spinach and caramelised red onion. Please form an orderly stampede... www.kilfeatheranddumbrill.weebly.com

But they don’t stop at meat. Cheese (many local); wines and spirits; charcuterie, pies and other pastries, condiments and sauces; you name it, Rawlings has it plus lots more that you might not expect. What’s Hot: You haven’t had a steak pie until you’ve had one of Rawlings’. Sublime, thick-yet-flaky light crust, tender chunks of Angus beef swimming in the richest, glossiest gravy you’ve ever tasted. Just magic. www.rawlingsofcranleigh.co.uk

Surrey Hills Butchers, Oxshott High St, Leatherhead KT22 0JR | 01372 844890 A local lad done good, Simon Taylor is leading a new generation of Surrey butchers who are determined to keep the old traditions of quality and service alive while keeping up with modern tastes. The 34-year-old took up the trade at the age of 13 and hasn’t looked back, finally setting up his own shop in Oxshott that has since won a loyal clientele who travel from all over to buy his superior meats. Simon is a passionate advocate for his craft, training his young staff from scratch and regularly teaches butchery and knife skills at events. He plans to begin his own workshops and courses. Look out for Secret Steak workshops coming soon! What’s Hot: Customers can’t get enough of Surrey Hills Butchers’ dry-aged Cote de Boeuf. A king among steaks and a glorious feast for two people. www.butcherscook.com

The Dorking Butchery

John MurraY Butchers, Loxwood West Sussex

48 High Street, Dorking, Surrey, RH4 1AY | 01306 640517

68 High St, Cranleigh GU6 8AG | 01403 752859

A spangly new butchers for Dorking with two talented young owners at the helm, the Dorking Butchery has thrived in a town that had seen its previous traditional butchers close down the year before, citing competition with the local Waitrose. Gary Corps and Alex Emmett have recaptured the locals’ love of quality meat thanks to their exhaustive skills and knowledge and a shop that dares to add a little modern style to its traditional intentions. Among the fabulous homemade sausages, joints and burgers, they specialise in dry aged beef, matured for 4 weeks to ensure maximum tenderness and flavour. What’s Hot: Just about everything, but if you’re thinking about a BBQ you’ll definitely want to grab some of their Gloucester Old Spot sausages for their succulence and herby flavour. www.thedorkingbutchery.co.uk

Okay, not technically Surrey but close enough that this renowned butchers draws loyal customers from across Surrey and neighbour Sussex. Celebrating 30 years in the business, John Murray is something of a legend to his trade and customers. Over 50 restaurants get the good stuff from Johnny, as he sources as much of his meat as possible from farms within the local area, and anything that can’t be sourced locally comes from a handful of trusted suppliers at London’s Smithfield Market. And then he goes to work on them, producing wonderful joints and sublime sausages in dozens of varieties of flavours. There’s his much loved Cumberland of course, but you can also buy gluten-free Italian sausages and even a North African merguez style made with lamb. What’s Hot: Turn your full English into something super special with the sausages mentioned above, or make a showpiece of your Sunday roast with one of John’s butterflied, marinated legs of lamb.

Thirsty Business

From beautiful bubbles to the finest craft ales and spirits bursting with character and complexity, Surrey’s vintners, distillers and brewers know how to slake a thirst and are drawing attention from producers from around the world. Big or small, these local heroes are certainly worth raising a glass to. Bottom’s up!

High Clandon Estate

Clandon Downs, High Clandon High Clandon Estate Vineyard have been wow-ing the wine world for several years now, with their champagne-style sparkling white winning multiple awards. Each year their new vintages are sold in abundance, even though Bruce and Sybilla Tindale’s vineyard only stretches for one acre. The couple’s passion and care ensures the vines continue to produce the exceptional wine that has made them big players in the Surrey wine world.

What to try: The latest Magna Carta 2010 Cuvée www.highclandon.co.uk

Take the Tour Why not take them all in on a one-day tour? English Sparkling Wine Tours are a new company set up to offer just that: a hugely enjoyable one-day trip around Surrey’s best producers of sparkling wine. From the grandeur of Denbies to the boutique style of High Clandon and a fascinating glimpse at the organic viticulture at Albury, these intimate tours are great fun hugely informative and are the ideal way to taste the best that this county has to offer. www.englishsparklingwinetours.co.uk

Silent Pool Distillers Shere Road, Albury

Albury Organic Vineyard

Shere Road, Albury One of the most unique vineyards in the South East, Albury Vineyards produce their award-winning wines using organic and biodynamic viticulture methods. These techniques have resulted in, among other vintages, their renowned Silent Pool Rosé which floated down the Thames with the Queen during her Jubilee celebrations in 2012. And this year they won two gold medals at the International Wine Awards 2016!

What to try: The Silent Pool Rosé. If it’s good enough for the queen… www.alburyvineyard.com

Denbies Vineyard

London Road, Dorking Quite possibly the best-known vineyard in the area if not the UK, Denbies is in fact the largest in the country, boasting 265 glorious acres. With 7 miles of public footpath and all-year round opening and more food and wine events than you can shake a corkscrew at, this is the place to visit for those of you who want to discover a wide range of seasonal wines in a ma jestic setting.

What to try: The Redlands, a medium bodied dry red wine. How often have you drunk a British red…? www.denbies.co.uk

It seems that every farm shop and foodie emporium in the county worth its salt has an achingly attractive bottle of Silent Pool Gin on proud display. But the spirit’s charm is more than just skin deep. Distilled with the pure water from the Silent Pool in Albury and natural botanics, these are the very flavour of artisanal quality. www.silentpooldistillers.com

Hogs Back Brewery

Manor Farm, The Street, Tongham The Hogs Back can confidently be described as a ‘ma jor’ brewery – their fine bevvy of bevvies can be found across the land. You’ve almost certainly sampled a TEA, England’s Glory or Hazy Hog cider, and if you have then you don’t need us to tell you how awesome they are. www.hogsback.co.uk

The Garden Cider Company

Mill House Farm, Petworth Road, Chiddingfold How do you like these apples? This little family business started by collecting the apples that fell in local’s gardens that would have been discarded, and instead put them to producing some of the very best English cider around. Since then they now receive apples from over 4000 households who receive a share of the cider made back for free. www.thegardencidercompany.co.uk

Go Al Fresco Our English summer can be a fickle thing but when it deigns to show up we’d be mad not to get out there and lap it up while we can. Thankfully, Surrey is crammed with idyllic spots to eat, drink and be all kinds of merry while the sun’s in a good mood. From gorgeous pub beer gardens to our green and pleasant parks and the many breath-taking areas of natural beauty in which to picnic, here’s just a handful of the best places to go Al Fresco…

Worplesdon Place

Few local pub-restaurants exploit their setting so well as Worplesdon Place, whose new owners have entirely revitalised the food and drink to finally do the establishment justice. Sweeping green lawns, towering pines and a picturesque lake rippling with waterfowl and other wildlife offer an immediate sense of escape, and there’s more outdoor seating than you can shake a British summertime. Which makes Worplesdon Place the place to come for some al fresco, good-time grazing over the summer months and beyond. www.worplesdonplace.co.uk

The Weyside, Guildford

One riverside retreat that comes to mind on a hot summer’s day in Guildford is the Weyside pub’s glorious terrace patio. Perched over the River Wey at the edge of town, the Weyside is where to head for some easy lounging and some fantastic eating while you watch the gleaming water glide by. And that irresistible aroma of cooking meat drifting over all? That’ll be the Burger Shack serving some seriously good barbecue! Oh, and at what other pub can you hire beach huts? www.theweyside.co.uk

Hand and Spear, Weybridge

This Weybridge landmark just keeps on getting better every year, thanks to a couple of stunning refurbishments and a commitment to offering the very best food and drink. This year they’ve revamped their outdoor area to keep up with their uniquely compelling interior, so that the pub now boasts a glorious sun trap Secret Garden and outdoor burger shack so that you’ll never need to take off your sunglasses. www.handandspear.co.uk

Duke of Cambridge, Tilford

Nestled in the serene pine woods near Farnham, the Duke of Cambridge was already a fantastic destination for many. But then they went and upped their game on the al fresco front as part of £500,000 facelift that has seen a massive extension to their multi-level patio as well as a new children’s play area made from sustainable timber. Add to this the Duke’s achingly seasonal menus, carefully curated wine lists and local ales and you’ve got a recipe for some exceptional R&R. www.dukeofcambridgetilford.co.uk

Painshill Park, Cobham

As picnic spots go, there aren’t many that offer up such a sunny mix of adventure and tranquillity as the beautiful 18th century landscaped gardens of Painshill Park These 158 magical acres are filled with follies, grottos, sculptures, historic plantings and amazing Surrey wildlife. Perfect for bringing a picnic but there’s always Hamilton’s Tea Room for nibbles and light meals. www.painshill.co.uk

Newland’s Corner

Views don’t come more widescreen than the sweeping vistas visible from Newland’s Corner, just a couple of miles outside Guildford. This is where the famous Surrey Hills can be seen in all their rolling glory and the starting point for many walks that explore the Chantries woods and the lovely villages of Gomshall and Shere. A picnic on these slopes, with these views, can easily last a whole day, and there’s also a cheerful, cheap café and the Squirrel Hill café over the road.

WHERE TO EAT: THE OLIVE TREE By Rich Lee

FOOD & DRINK

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Food-and-Drink

Since February this year, the Olive Tree has belonged to the same family as the Albany in Guildford and the Dog and Pheasant in Brook, two pub-restaurants that we raved about last year. But does the Olive Tree make it a hat trick? Nestled in that bucolic pocket between Guildford and Woking, Sutton Green, the Olive Tree lords it over the leafy B-road connecting them as it has since around 1904. Formerly known as the Fox and Hounds, the Olive Tree earned quite the reputation as a restaurant over the last ten years. So what’s changed since it swapped hands earlier in the year? Very little as it happens, and if you’d been here before then you’ll probably be relieved to hear it. The Olive Tree already nailed a sweet spot that sits somewhere between cottage and cosmopolitan; a simple, understated style full of soft greens, exposed brick and rustic timbers. Out front, the gleaming golden bar sweeps past nooks and bays until landing on bottomless, squishy sofas before an impressive fireplace. Have no doubt however, as appealing as it might be to lose an afternoon or evening by the bar alone, the Olive Tree puts it food front and centre, with a dedicated dining room whose soft-lit, silvered green walls and modern-rustic touches sees it filled with a loyal mob of diners every lunch and dinner service as the week rolls along. One of the few big changes made to the pub has seen the outside up its game considerably, with the addition of more seating on its pleasant, sun-trap patio and a verdant new lawn. Impatient for a little al fresco action after a dismal start to the summer, our little party nabbed a table out in a sunny patch and settled down for some serious eating courtesy of one of the best menus we’ve come across this year. Witness: Golden, breaded brie would’ve been a crispy, oozy, cheesy delight by themselves, but these devils were jacked up with harissa and mint for something startlingly fresh, spicy and rich all at once. A pot of heady port jelly to dip in signalled a signature touch of Chef Andrew Larkin, transplanted here

from the Albany, whose uninhibited and generous approach scored massive points with us at that pub last summer. It was good to see him clearly stretching out with this menu, which glides deftly between pub favourites given bright new life from clean flavours and excellent ingredients such as the potted Devon crab and crayfish to spread over toast, to tastes of the Far East like the absolutely crazy-moreish dish of Asian pork belly; quivering, tender-soft hunks of pork piled in a bowl of sticky-sweet chilli and ginger broth with the lightest crunch of sesame. Dare to share this at your peril. We need to talk about fish though, which the Olive Tree, as many before me would attest, has done better than most of its rivals for years. But not before mentioning a herb-crusted rack of lamb, so rosy-pink, sweet and juicy we abandoned cutlery and civility entirely and fell on them like something out of a Romero or Boyle zed-flick. We’ve got to stop doing that. Someone might notice. But, yes: Fish. At the Olive Tree they just seem to do seafood right, as seen in pride-of-place on their ever-changing specials board. If it’s fresh that day, it’ll be in front of you in the form of something delicious or other, like our creamy Red Thai curry full of fragrant, deep heat and pieces of not one but three perfectly cooked fish (red snapper, king prawn and bream). Need further proof? How about the mighty Roasted Fish Platter? Purportedly for two diners but big enough to intimidate a small family, nevertheless the Olive Tree’s celebrated seafood platter brings with it a shellfish-lover’s dream suspended in a silver bowl on a bed of samphire, burnt lemon and garlicky, buttery juices. £60 nets you a menagerie of plump Exmouth mussels, langoustines, crab claws, whole black tiger prawns and a fat red lobster, all achingly fresh and all just fantastically indulgent. Order a bottle of something cool, clean and dry like their Chateau D’astros Rose and you’ve got some

seriously happy grazing ahead of you. By all accounts the desserts here aren’t too shabby either, but had I groped, half-blind and staggeringly full after what had gone before for a peanut butter chocolate terrine or a slice of pineapple cheesecake then I might not be here to write this now. Although I suspect I would have gone with a smile. That said, for a few, the prices of some of these dishes might invite a scowl instead, as they do tend to climb towards the steep end of things. But the Olive Tree easily earns it. Because to find a Surrey pub so confident and agile with their food, and so inviting in every other way that matters, is always something wonderful. And always worth it.

Make a Dash for the Early Bird Early bird tickets are still available for Phyllis Tuckwell’s Dash of Colour, so if you fancy taking part in a sponsored run with a rainbow of difference, then sign up quick! Now in its third year, Dash of Colour is a hugely popular fundraising event which sees participants run a 5k route, showered at every kilometre mark with powder paint to symbolise the colour which Phyllis Tuckwell brings to the lives of its patients and their relatives. It is held in the beautiful grounds of Frimley Lodge Park, in Frimley Green, and will take place this year on Saturday 3rd September. The money which Dash raises helps Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care (PTHC) provide the outstanding end of life care which it offers patients and their families facing cancer, or another serious progressive illness. Every day PTHC cares for over 250 patients, relatives and carers - in their own homes, at the Hospice in Farnham and at the Beacon Centre in Guildford. It offers medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work advice and practical support, but as the NHS/Government only covers 20% of its costs, is has to raise over £15,000 a day to be able to do this. Fundraising events such as Dash of Colour help PTHC to raise this huge amount of money, with last year’s Dash seeing 1,200 participants raise over £78,000! The early bird registration fee is £16. On 1st April prices will rise to £18. Register online at shop.pth.org.uk or call Phyllis Tuckwell’s Fundraising team on 01252 729446.

Road to rio Chris Adcock and wife Gabby targeting gold at the Rio Olympic Games, Nottingham’s Chris Adcock - husband of Surrey Smashers’ Gabby has described the prospect of walking out at the Olympic Games alongside his wife this summer as a ‘dream come true’. The Adcocks, who have been named in Team GB’s squad for this summer’s Rio Olympic Games, have played badminton alongside each other since they were teenagers. The pair have been married since 2013, although Chris partnered Imogen Bankier in the build-up to and during London 2012, where they exited the competition at the group stage. Chris and Gabby reunited in 2013 just before their wedding and are now ranked seventh in the world after their BWF World Superseries Finals victory in Dubai in December. And despite their place being all-but guaranteed for several months, the announcement at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes was still a special moment for the couple.

“I am as excited now as I was before London 2012 and it is such a special thing to go to any Olympic Games,” Chris admitted. “It is even more exciting that I get to go with Gabby. It will be a dream come true walking out with Team GB on my back alongside Gabby. I am really excited by the prospect. “We have both been to multiple Commonwealth Games and been successful, and we will be playing the same people that we usually play (in regular competitions) on the same size court, in the same sport, so it is still a badminton competition. “We will be going out there a week before to the Olympic Village and that will be a great experience, but we will be fully focussed on performing well, and if we perform well then we will experience the whole event even more.” It is the first time since the Athens 2004 Olympic Games that Great Britain has representation across all five disciplines in badminton. Team GB have won two medals in badminton since its inclusion as a full-medal sport in 1992 – with Simon Archer and Joanne Goode taking bronze at Sydney 2000 and Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson winning silver four years later in Athens.

The Adcocks showed they can challenge the best in the world with their BWF World Superseries Finals, as well as handle multi-sport competitions after claiming gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. And Chris is confident they can make the podium if they perform when it matters most, later this summer. He added: “Any medal would be fantastic but gold is the one that everyone wants and we know that we have a good chance. “We have been performing well over the last 12 months and we know that if we perform to our top level then we have a great chance. “We just want to focus on performing as best as we can on that day and take it one day and one game at a time and hopefully we will still be there when we get to the business end.” For more reaction go to badmintonengland.co.uk or sign up to receive their free Fan Club Daily Rio Reports for the latest news, behind the scenes footage and Team GB player interviews throughout the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at www.badmintonengland.co.uk/fanclub

AUGUST 2016

There you are: you, laid in the sun, an ice cold drink and a good book in hand. The quaint sound of excitable animals and laughing school children lingers in the distance, but for now it’s just you and your surroundings: just as Mother Nature intended. There aren’t many things that would improve such a setting, but finding ourselves a fair distance from the coast and tucked into a neat south-westerly cubby hole means finding an ocean breeze to smell or get amongst isn’t doable. However, whilst the wider ponds may be out of Surrey’s reach, our big, friendly, green-hoarding county is home to some quite tranquil smaller swimming locations, or as it’s known in the business: Wild Swimming. Listen up, homeslice… Frensham Great Pond, Farnham A sandy lake with beaches and buoyed-off swimming area. Set within forest and open heathland, the lake is situated around three-and-a-half miles south of Farnham near the Frensham Pond Hotel. The Frensham Great Pond hosts great parking, a café and a small museum, too. Perfect for a relaxing summer’s day.

Tilford Green / Stockbridge Pond Popular village green and pub. Paddling and pools just downstream of the bridge, though the Parish council have recently put up ‘no paddling’ notices. Sometimes fishermen can inhabit the area, but head downstream 300m to find Yagden Heath, where you’ll find a River Wey with trees and rope swings.

Stepping Stones, River Mole Famous stepping stones on the River Mole at Box Hill Country Park with a deeper swimming section in the meadows downstream. A short walk away and you’ll find the Stepping Stones Pub – which is never a bad thing.

TEST DU

Bolder Mere, Ockham Common Just off the M25 near RHS Wisley, a nature reserve and a popular spot for a discreet, hidden dip. Take a picnic, a book, a chair and your relaxation head and chill. It’s a relatively unknown getaway, right where you didn’t expect it.

Bourley Bottom, Aldershot Not exactly in Surrey, okay, but close enough to travel to. Bourley Bottom is a series of old reservoir lakes in a pine forest on the Ministry of Defence training land. Whilst very popular in the summer, just 300m up stream you’ll find another tucked-away dream world: two for the price of one.

SAFETY STUFF - THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN WILD SWIMMING Lots of the best water moves and river swimming in and against a current can be fun. However, you generally want to avoid being taken downstream in an uncontrolled manner. Even shallow water, if it’s moving fast enough, can knock you over and carry you away. Always consider: if I do lose my footing or get swept downstream, where will I get out? Identify your emergency exits before getting in and scout around for any downstream hazards (obstructions, waterfalls or weirs).

Friday Street, Leith Hill Mill pool and inn among the beautiful thick-wooded Leith Hill. Best entry to the water is the far wooded bank with the Stephan Langton pub just up the lane (five minute walk). For a more remote experience, Broadmoor is just over a mile away where you’ll find a waterfall and a series of idyllic private lakes.

When judging flow rates remember the basics: the shallower or narrower the river bed becomes, the faster the water must flow to pass through, and vice versa. That’s why ‘still waters run deep’.

UMMY: Wild Swimming Throw a stick in the water to judge flow speed and avoid anything moving faster than you can swim. In tidal estuaries there can also be counter-flows, with seawater moving in and river water moving out. In deep rivers or gorges the water in the surface layer may be flowing more slowly than the water beneath. These confused waters aren’t necessarily dangerous for outdoor swimming – you’re not going to be sucked under – but they can be disorientating and may take you out into deeper water or close to an obstruction. You can generally feel what’s happening under the water with your feet and body. Large eddies and surface ‘simmering’ also suggest something more powerful is happening beneath. Be particularly cautious in these unpredictable waters.

three sides, create particularly dangerous re-circulating currents in the confined space within their walls. In a large plunge pool you’ll generally feel the currents long before you are in danger of being pulled under the waterfall but if you are foolish enough to swim into the tumult, and are taken down, it’s like being caught in a wave’s undertow. Keep calm, hold your breath, hope you don’t get dragged along a rocky bottom and wait a few seconds until you are spat out. Honestly, we wouldn’t recommend hitting the water unless our British weather is being incredibly kind. Use your common sense, yeah. Oh, and enjoy.

Currents can be especially powerful directly under large waterfalls or weirs. As with breaking waves the water can be flowing in two directions, with some water exiting from the fall downstream while some creates a ‘rip-tide’ that is circulating to the back of the fall. Semi-circular or ‘box’ weirs, which have

TEST DRIVE: NEW PEUGEOT 2008 SUV VITAL STATISTICS MODEL Peugeot 2008 SUV 1.6L BlueHDi 120 Stop Start GT Line PRICE £20,565 OTR ACCELERATION 0 – 62mph in 9.6 seconds TOP SPEED 119mph EMISSIONS 96 g/km EXTRA-URBAN MPG 85.6 URBAN MPG 65.7

By Joe Payne Courtesy of the good people at Robins and Day in Guildford, we got to take a test drive in the brand new Peugeot 2008 SUV. But how was it? Cruising through the Surrey Hills on a (mostly wet but occasionally) sunny July morning. For a work day, it doesn’t get too much better than that. But let’s be honest, free rein over a car for a couple of hours along windy roads is potentially a chore if you were driving, say, Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter’s car. However, when you’re in the fortunate position of being handed the keys to a brand new SUV; well, it puts a grin on one’s chops. The Peugeot 2008 SUV was the machine we were fortunate enough to drive, and off the bat it’s a funky-looking auto. A kind of small Sports Utility Vehicle, the 2008 offers a kind of modern yet slightly edgy look, with a horizontal bonnet and vertical front face, impressive new integrated radiator with embossed pendant design and central Peugeot lion badge. The model I drove – the 2008 SUV 1.6L BlueHDi 120 Stop Start GT Line – came in the striking new Ultimate Red colour. Aesthetics box = ticked.

However, performance is key folks, and the comfort and ease of driving (coupled with an abundance of features) made my jaunt across Surrey a hugely enjoyable experience. The comfortable, roomy interior is coupled with a raft of features, the PEUGEOT i-Cockpit® being the most notable. This 7” multifunction colour touchscreen puts functionality at your fingertips, but there was a lot of other fantastic features that enhanced the drive further; Park Assist, Reversing Camera and Apple CarPlay™ functionality (a great partner to my slightly aged iPhone) being the most impressive. The compact sports steering wheel offers improved manoeuvrability and the headup instrument panel keeps your eyes on the road. Coupled with hugely responsive handling, the 2008 SUV felt extremely nimble, like darting around in a tiny new hatchback rather than a mid-sized vehicle. All of this made the 2008 just about as easy and comfortable as any car I’ve ever driven. Not bad considering the miniscule tiny roads of Peaslake, Abinger Hammer and Holmbury were my primary stomping grounds. That said, on the straights the Peugeot had no little grunt. The model I was given was the top of the range BlueHDi 120, which hits 62mph in 9.6 seconds with a top speed of 119mph; not bad for a small diesel engine. Speaking of which, the

COMBINED MPG 76.3

BlueHDi diesel engines in all of the 1.6 litre models come with some huge perks; notably exceptional fuel economy and low CO2 emissions. Every diesel car in the New 2008 SUV range emits under 97g/km, which means no road tax. This means these cars offer exceptional value for money… Prices start at £13,165 OTR for petrol models and the very top level diesel, kitted out and packed with tech like the one I was lucky enough to drive, would set you back around £20,000. All of those extras and considering you’d pay no road tax, and potentially get 85mpg on an Extra Urban drive cycle? It’s really very competitive, meaning that if you are in the market for a new car between those prices, the 2008 SUV should be up for your consideration. So with a great drive, sharp looks and excellent value for money, the New Peugeot 2008 SUV must be considered for the mid-sized car hunters among you lovely readers. It gets a hearty Guide 2 Surrey stamp of approval…

BUSINESS News CAMBERLEY TOWN CENTRE BUSINESSES SAY ’YES’ TO THE BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT

Camberley Town Centre can expect to benefit from nearly £1.5 million of private sector investment after local businesses voted in favour of continuing to fund Collectively Camberley, the Business Improvement District (BID), for a further 5-year term. Ballot results released by independent scrutineer, Electoral Reform Services, reveal that 85% of all those who voted were in favour of the BID continuing. For the renewal to be successful, a ma jority by rateable value was also required. This was achieved with 87% of the total value of those who voted. Collectively Camberley BID are behind popular events such as The Camberley Car Show, The Christmas Light Switch On and Camberley’s Rooftop Film Festival. Alongside the annual events programme, the group are also responsible for the floral displays and Christmas lights and the popular Little Book of Offers. They work with businesses in the town centre to support their marketing and promote them via the Love Camberley brand. The BID also deliver free workshops to the businesses within the BID, providing customer service training, digital skills improvements and mystery shopping. All BID initiatives are funded by the businesses from within Camberley as well as voluntary contributions from key partners. Commenting on the ballot result, Lucy Boazman, BID Manager for Collectively Camberley said: “This is a very exciting time for businesses in Camberley Town Centre and I would like to thank them for their continued support. With the continuation of the BID, we will be able to keep delivering a whole range of enhancements to Camberley, progress new projects and keep delivering our annual events like The Camberley Car Show and The Christmas Light Switch

On. The BID renewal is a great opportunity to build on what has been achieved in the previous 5 years. With Camberley’s strengths and characteristics, the town centre has a huge potential. These strengths provide the BID, our businesses and organisations with the opportunity to create and manage an environment that is good for business, for our customers, visitors, employees and for local residents.” The activities and projects delivered by BID are financed through a BID levy that is 1.5% of each businesses rateable value; resulting in around £260,000 annual investment for Camberley. Further funding of around £40,000 per annum is generated by the BID through voluntary contributions from key partners, sponsorship and ticket sales from events. The proceeds of which are put back into the town and on the additional projects that the businesses have identified and as set out in the BIDs business plan. It is anticipated that over the five years’ term, nearly £ 1.5 million will be generated. After several months of consultation with the town’s businesses, the BID produced a business plan that outlines their aims for 2016 – 2021. This includes a continuation of the town events and marketing initiatives as well as a focus on increasing external funding. The group also aim to enhance the look and feel of the town with street art and improvements to signage around the town. Ms Boazman continued “We are excited about the next 5 years for Camberley and look forward to working with the BID businesses and our key partners to take Camberley Town Centre to the next level.”

here’s so much more to this family business than just the beautiful kitchens designed and built by David Seymour and his team.

Employing the same expertise, care and attention to detail as they do for their celebrated kitchens, Seymours design, build and install bespoke bedroom, lounge, library and study furniture that perfectly complements your own vision and lifestyle. Their bedroom range alone includes bedside cabinets, headboards and dressing tables as well as wardrobes. In 2014 they installed their bedroom display in their showroom at Pew Corner, which demonstrates glazed and mirrored doors, as well as showcasing totally unique designs for interior panels. Rooms with limited space can be augmented with simple, stylish flourishes like magnificent mahogany bookshelves, while luxurious dressing rooms allow for lots of specialist pull outs designed to store clothes and

accessories. Stunning wardrobes built using solid materials and long established techniques can incorporate anything from hanging rails to hat shelves, trouser rails to tie racks. All furniture is hand built in the workshop adjoining their showroom at Pew Corner and employs traditional cabinetry skills with an appreciation of the latest technology and the most modern trends and gadgets. Don’t let the high-end style at the heart of Seymour’s range deceive you, however, as you can be certain that affordable, custom built furniture – and even whole kitchens! - to suit your budget can be found here, with the same service and quality across the whole range. So whatever project you aspire to, your dream bedroom, study, lounge or kitchen may be closer than you think. You need only call or visit Seymour Kitchens and Bedrooms to discover how they can bring that dream to life.

GARDEN ROOMS Green Retreats

ff ff ff Our House

W

Our House

here ARE you supposed to put your husband, his computers, consoles, guitars, the cats, the kids (joking…sort of) when you live in a small house in the town centre?

Our House

Our House

Our story of how we got our gorgeous Inspiration Retreat is probably not too dissimilar to many readers. We have a lovely, albeit small, three bed semi-detached house in the centre of Guildford. We had re-mortgaged our house and applied for planning, twice, and had it rejected both times. Not to be defeated, and desperate for more space to fill with my husband’s computers/guitars/general geek paraphernalia (and finally have my dining room back – yey!) we decided instead to convert our basement. The cost seemed to increase weekly, and by the time the structural surveyor came back with yet more cost we pulled the plug. Then one day, whilst searching for Home Office ideas, I came across Green Retreats. With the exception of it not being attached to the house - it was, quite literally, everything we needed. In fact, it was 6sq meters MORE than we needed. We needed space, we would love a large light filled room to work and relax in but that hadn’t seemed possible until now and certainly not possible to do within our budget. And yet here it was – no planning required, all-inclusive cost and a beautiful modern room that took nothing away from our existing home.

Our House

Before they arrived for the initial consultation we had played around on the website, creating our dream room. They changed it only very slightly - offering us advice and ideas that we hadn’t even considered. In fact, once we were done with the final design, we ended up saving money. There was never any pressure from them - despite the fact that we were, pretty much, a sure thing. The garden room took 3.5 days, in total, to build. We had to prepare the ground for them, and we opted to bury and lay the electric cable ourselves to save money. It took about 5 hours to get the foundations in. Piles and all. A week later Team Charming (that’s not really their name, but they might consider it) turned up the get the main structure up and water tight. That took one day. One. On the second day they laid the floor, got the electric and network cables working, sorted out the walls, added the final touches and left. With the exception of the heating and air-conditioning (I know!) which had been scheduled for a couple of weeks later, we were finished. Quicker than an extension, bigger than both the extension and the basement and all for less than half the price.

Our House

From the initial call to Green Retreats, to the final installation, our experience has been absolutely super. I wouldn’t have agreed to write this had it been anything other than that.

It is secure, warm, bright and spacious and we couldn’t be happier. It has longevity I don’t think we had considered at the time of installation and I am certain it will remain one of the most loved rooms in the house.
