Othello Holy Trinity Church, 5th | 22nd February Love, jealousy, betrayal, race…well of course this is Bill Shakespeare’s tale of Othello et al, performed by the established Guildford Shakespeare Company in the atmospheric confines of Holy Trinity Church in Guildford. In addition to their spectacular open-air season that takes place in various locations throughout the summer (Twelfth Night at Guildford Castle in June & Henry V at Guildford Cathedral in July) GSC will also be marking the 450th birthday of a certain Mr Shakespeare with a series of events in April including the one-woman show by Roy Chatfield, The Other Shakespeare. 2014 also sees the introduction of a new autumn season of performance. The Ballad of Skinny Lattes & Vintage Clothing ‘An exultation of Urban Noise’ The Ivy Arts Centre, University of Surrey | 16th February An interesting name for an exhibition and performance that is as captivating as the work the title belongs to. This six movement noise opera, presented by the neo-futurist collective and artist Joseph Young (aka Guiseppi Marinetti) is composed of music, Super-8 film, text and interrelated soundscapes.

Talking to... POLAR

olar are Adam Woodford, Nick Jones, Fabian Lomas, Chris Stockings & Jag Jago. Their 2nd full length album Shadowed by Vultures is being released this month. We caught up with Woody and Nick to talk shop…

How did you meet? We’re basically mates from Guildford and the surrounding area… five guys that wanted to be in a band with the same like-minded idea to just go out and do it and push something as far as it can possibly go. We’re managed by Stu GiliRoss (Gallows) and we grew up listening to and watching Gallows… I guess we wanted to see what it would be like to be like Frank Carter etc. The hunger and the thirst to actually see what it was like to be out there in those (band) scenarios, seeing people going mental for our music…

How do you go about writing music? For Iron Lungs, I (Woody) wrote the lyrics, the band wrote the music and it was very much a cut and paste job, put it together, go and record it, get it done. For this latest album we really addressed how we make music. We wanted to make a record

where everybody had input, whether it was vocals, drums, melodies… It meant everybody was proud of every song that came out from those sessions.

Musical influences? Funeral for a Friend have been a big influence on us as a band. They’ve been there, done that and bought the t-shirt, twenty million times over. When we met them it was an odd experience, we walked in and they were sound-checking Juneau. It was surreal. This is a band that, when we were at school, if we had said that we were playing with FFAF, friends wouldn’t have believed us. To be honest, any band or group, whether they be electro, punk, hardcore, who are thinking out of the box and challenging themselves; they inspire us.

Describe the sound of Polar? (Shadowed by Vultures) It’s got absolutely everything. It’s got feeling, raw energy… it’s metal but it’s not metal. It’s punk because of the ethic, it’s

driving, it’s got ballads, it’s got sing a long’s… the last record was 10 heavy songs and this is just different. You’ve got to go and listen to it. The listener can interpret it the way they want.

Plans for the rest of 2014? Shadowed by Vultures comes out on the 10th February. We’re out in Europe for a couple of weeks and have our first tour bus! Then it’s back to the UK to do a headline tour with Anavae, The Catharsis and Zoax which everybody is really looking forward to. We’re also excited to announce that we’ve been signed to Prosthetic Records (Lamb of God, Gojira et al) in the US.

What are you listening to? Adam Pain | Tutor at the Academy of Contemporary Music and Blogger Surrey-born musician, producer and tutor at Guildford’s ACM, Adam Pain is a veteran of the studio and stage. He is the writer behind the hilarious and moving blog at www.aworldofpain.co.uk. What was the first record you ever bought? The first record I ever bought for myself, with pocket money, was ‘We Close Our Eyes’ by Go West. A fact that made recording Peter Cox for a charity single extra exciting. A great voice, that fella! What record has had the most significance in your life? I would have to say Stevie Wonder’s ‘Innervisions’ was a game changer - as was Joni Mitchell’s ‘The Hissing of Summer Lawns’. What are you listening to at the moment? The Staves’ ‘Dead and Born and Grown’ album has not been off my iPod since its release in December 2012. Just beautiful.

ou may not expect ripped torsos, tattooed arms, and raw masculine energy (sounds good doesn’t it?) to burst onto the stage at the ballet, but that is exactly what you’ll find at a BalletBoyz show. We spoke to Artistic Directors Michael Nunn and William Trevitt about the company, the dancers and ‘The Talent’ coming to G Live on Monday 10th February…

Did all the dancers train in traditional ballet or do they come from a variety of styles?

Who are the BalletBoyz? The BalletBoyz are an allmale contemporary dance company, featuring dancers with a range of skills from diverse backgrounds.

Where did the idea for BalletBoyz come from? When we (Michael Nunn and William Trevitt) decided to stop performing we felt there were many ideas that we hadn't had a chance to explore yet. So we drew together this group of extraordinary young men to continue exploring our ideas.

What is your mission as a dance company? We want to make dance of the highest quality with the most creative, collaborative and gifted choreographers we can find. And to perform it for the greatest audiences we can attract.

Is this your first time in Guildford? We performed in Guildford last year and had a great time. The crowd was very supportive and as a result the show was great too – we’re really looking forward to performing at G Live again. It’s a fantastic venue.

Our dancers have many different backgrounds and skills. This allows them to work in many different ways and to be constantly learning from one another. It also keeps choreographers intrigued about what they could produce with us.

What is your personal background in dance? We both studied ballet (Michael Nunn from 15, William Trevitt from 6) and met at The Royal Ballet School. We then spent 12 years performing with the Royal Ballet until we created our own company, BalletBoyz, in 2000.

Tell us about the show, ‘The Talent’. What’s it about? ‘The Talent’ is an exciting company of spectacular dancers, performing choreography that was created especially for them by Liam Scarlett and Russell Maliphant, two of the UK’s most talented choreographers. The programme consists of two pieces – ‘Serpent’, choreographed by Liam Scarlett and ‘Fallen’ by Russell Maliphant. The pieces are very different from each other but both are exciting and absorbing to watch.

Who would enjoy a BalletBoyz production? Anyone and everyone would enjoy our show. We hope that everyone will enjoy it, particularly those who are new to dance and perhaps think dance isn't for them.

In what ways does the BalletBoyz style differ from traditional ballet dancing?

Do the dancers perform to classical or contemporary music?

Despite our title, our style is not just about ballet. We use all of the line and precision of ballet but we mix that in with a more contemporary kind of movement and create a fascinating hybrid that is difficult to define but compelling to watch.

The music in our show is by two composers, Max Richter and Armand Amar. The first is a little more orchestral and classical and the second more filmic and raw.

Shrove Tuesday, or as it’s more popularly known, ‘Pancake Day’, falls a little later this year, on the 4th March. So get ready, or just get ahead, with these simple recipes the kids –and you- will love.

AMERICAN STYLE BLUEBERRY PANCAKES WITH YOGHURT & MAPLE SYRUP For an American twist, try these super simple fluffy pancakes. Makes 12

EASY CRÊPE RECIPE Classic crêpes that can be adapted for both sweet and savoury toppings. Makes 8 • 100g plain flour

• 80g butter

• 2 large eggs

• Lemon wedges, to serve (optional)

• 300ml milk • Pinch of salt

• Granulated sugar, to serve (optional)

1. Pour the flour, eggs, milk and a pinch of salt into a bowl and whisk to a smooth batter. Set aside for 30 mins to rest. 2. Set a medium frying pan or crêpe pan over a medium heat and throw in a knob of butter. When hot, pour a ladleful of batter into the pan and tilt the pan to cover the surface. Cook for 1 min on each side until golden. If you’re feeling brave, toss them in the pan or use a fish slice to turn them. 3. Set aside on a warm plate or in a low oven as you go. Wipe the pan with kitchen paper in between pancakes. 4. Serve with lemon wedges and sugar or your favourite filling. We recommend sliced bananas and whipped cream or chocolate spread and chopped hazelnuts.

• 200g blueberries • 1 free-range egg • 240g of selfraising flour • 240ml of milk • ½ teaspoon of salt

• 1 teaspoon of caster sugar • 40g butter • Plain yoghurt • Maple syrup

1. Put the egg, self-raising flour, milk, salt and sugar into a large bowl and whisk until you get a smooth batter. Gently crush half of the blueberries so that they release a little juice and some of their colour and gently stir them into the batter. Rest for 30 minutes. 2. Put a large frying pan on a medium heat and add half the butter. When the pan is hot and the butter has melted, ladle a portion of the batter into the pan. One ladle will make one portion so cook several at a time if you can. 3. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes turning them over when they start to brown on the bottom. When cooked on both sides, transfer them to a plate, wipe the pan clean with kitchen paper, add the rest of the butter and start again. Repeat until all the batter is used up. 4. To serve, drizzle the pancakes with yoghurt and maple syrup and scatter over the rest of the blueberries.

PHYLLIS TUCKWELL: A Patient’s Story

This year TG media are supporting the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham, a charity dedicated improving the quality of life for their patients and their families. Rich Lee spoke to one patient, Susan Swayne, to learn about her experience coping with terminal lung cancer and of the invaluable care provide by the hospice…

meet Susan Swayne at the Phyllis Tuckwell in her bright and comfortable bedroom at the Phyllis Tuckwell hospice. With her is her daughter Vanessa - or ‘nurse’ as her mother jokingly calls her- and more relatives, including her brother and her husband David, drop in

to say hello. Despite being propped on her side in bed to relieve her discomfort, the 70-year old mother of two and grandmother of five is as animated and jovial as if she were holding court around her family table back home. Because, to Susan and her family, the Phyllis Tuckwell

hospice really is like home. Before she was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in June 2013, Susan was a bereavement counsellor and worked with many patients and families including those at Phyllis Tuckwell. “As a counsellor, I never wanted or expected to know this side of it. I was a coward,” she says, with a streak of humour. “But it prepared me for it in some ways.” She recalls her feelings when she first learnt of her cancer. “I believe I knew there was something wrong for a long time before it was only officially diagnosed last year. You just know your own body. Did it come as a surprise? No, not totally. Was I scared? Not overly. Of course, I didn’t like it; I didn’t want to have cancer. I’ve got far, far too much to live for. But was I scared? Not outrageously, no.

“I didn’t want this, of course. I’m a happy person who loves her family absolutely ultimately. But my Christian beliefs have been paramount, so instead of asking ‘how could God let this happen?’ it was more like: ‘why not?’ So I felt it was under control. I found peace. I have so much support, from my family and from my church, my friends and, of course, from this hospice.” When deciding on the kind of care she would need, Susan says it was barely a decision at all. “From the very beginning I said I do not want to go to hospital. Hospitals are wonderful, but they are not hospices.” Her daughter Vanessa explained how Phyllis Tuckwell has been with them from the very start. “We had regular visits from the clinical nurse specialist who assessed our needs and requirements and who organised everything with the doctors and home care teams. She told us about what would happen and what

to expect. “It was hard for my dad at first, when he was looking after Mum from home,” she says, “and it was a relief when the nurses would come to see them. She became quite anxious at home for the last few days, she was uncomfortable and was having trouble breathing and was quite scared. But as soon as she came to Phyllis Tuckwell it was just an instant relief, for her and for us.” “The hospice is absolutely amazing,” continues Susan. “Every single person, whether they are volunteers or staff, they are angels. I just couldn’t wish for any better treatment. The food is unbelievable – if I rang the bell for jelly, jelly will appear in my hand! (One has very simple tastes). But the people here are kindness itself.” The hospice employs 200 staff who are supported by an army of volunteers, 800 strong, all of whom are involved at every level, from

administration to treatment to therapy. “There’s a tremendous amount of complimentary therapy, here, so they come and massage my feet, for example, which is wonderful,” Susan buzzes. Such activities are also extended to the patient’s relatives, and Susan’s husband David admits that he’s enjoyed a little hand massage and aromatherapy himself. “Many of these people are volunteers and you get so much from their skills. They are absolutely priceless.” Did Susan, like many people, have her own msconceptions about hospices? “Of course I did, before I started working here. They were terrifying! They were ‘a place to die’. Well, we’re all going to die. But hey, dying’s not so bad. So far, it has been… easy. Really, it’s okay, thanks to the support I receive from family and friends and from the staff and volunteers at Phyllis Tuckwell.”

arah said: When I met Ian, I was living at home with my mother, who was very approving of him. The house resembled a florist, with all the flowers Ian sent me at the start of our relationship. I knew he was clingy, but it was my first experience of being with a man and things were good. Four months later they got engaged. Things were going well, but two years later on their wedding day, there was a noticeable change in Ian’s behaviour. Sarah said: He had a vice like grip on my hand that day. I was his possession. From that day forward I was not allowed to continue a friendship with a gay friend at work, or sing with the local choir. Because I was a nurse and worked long hours, he would make me feel guilty for wanting to spend free time away from him. He even made himself sick if I’d arranged to see a friend. As with 51% of domestic abuse cases in Surrey, the abuse continued, got worse, and resulted in injury. Sarah said: After the birth of our son, we had many visits to hospital as he had health problems. Ian would not help with Alex’s medical needs, and would lock him in his room crying and screaming. If I tried to help he’d spit and hit me when I was holding Alex, or grab my neck. If I voiced my concerns to him, in a moment of peace, he would threaten to kill himself and take my son with him. After I had an operation, Ian raped me with such force I now need a walking stick. It was only when her son was abused that Sarah felt she could be honest with her friends, who encouraged her to get in touch with the Surrey Domestic Abuse helpline, which was a real turning point. Sarah said: My friends and mother were shocked and saddened. In retrospect they did think his behaviour was strange, but they put it down to the stress of the birth of my son. They have since told me they didn’t think it was their place to say anything. I am happy to be open about it now, but when it is happening, you don’t know what to do. The story is not over. Sarah’s son will see his father twice a month until he is old enough to make his own decisions. Sarah said: It is still a concern, however, things are so much better than they were and I am now beginning to turn my life around. My advice to anyone experiencing abuse, or to those who know someone who might be, is to get help now. The support I got from the Surrey domestic abuse helpline was invaluable and I couldn’t thank them enough. *Names have been changed in this story.

Charity Spot: RAPE AND SEXUAL ABUSE SUPPORT CENTRE by Wizzi Seaton

he RASASC offer services to victims of rape and sexual abuse and their families. Abuse of this nature can be the most traumatising experience a person can endure, and finding someone to turn to is often the first step to recovering.

“We care, we understand, we believe and we can help you.”

Established in 1992, the RASASC aim to support all male and female survivors of rape and sexual abuse in Surrey and the surrounding areas.

These are the words of Sonja, Management Co-ordinator and Fundraiser for the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre in Guildford.

Through their anonymous helpline, precourt support, counselling, family and friends support service and independent sexual violence advisor (ISVA) services, this non-judgemental team of specialists and volunteers can offer victims professional help and a gentle ear.

Whether it occurred in your past, was someone you know or you know someone it’s happened to, help is here…

There are 21 trained counsellors at the centre offering a variety of therapies. From shortterm Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT) to long-term Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), the charity offer ongoing confidential counselling sessions for up to two years with both daytime and evening sessions available. Many of the people that get in touch with the charity are adults that experienced sexual abuse as children, often from members of their own family. “Sometimes when their own children reach the age they were abused, it can trigger memories,” says Sonja. Horrifyingly, the RASASC has seen a rise in demand for counselling for child victims, and due to this sad fact there are now specialist counsellors for 13–16 year-olds. Despite a common misconception, victims of rape and sexual abuse are not always female and 30% of people that use the RASASC are male. The RASASC offer single gender support groups and this year hope to launch two aftercare coffee mornings, one for men and one for women. Since inception the RASASC have tried to raise their profile and put an end to the embarrassment that surrounds sexual abuse. Each year members of the team take part in a sponsored walk to raise funds and help reach out to those that are suffering in silence.

OUR HISTORY: The King and Nell ...A POTTED HISTORY OF WHERE WE LIVE AND WHO LIVED HERE

h yes: February. That most golden and romantic of months. But it’s not just nowadays that love blooms around this time. It appears there’s a rich history of romance in these here parts. So before you pop out to pick up a diamond consider this Royal Love story. It’s 1667 and Lord Buckhurst has just rented a house on the High Street in Epsom. Number 36, in case you were wondering. He plans to spend the summer months frolicking with his beautiful mistress who goes by the name of Nell Gwyn. Now as it turns out, old Nelly was one of the most famous, highly paid and outright fit comedy actresses treading the boards on the London stage. Alas, Buckhurst did not keep her for long. How we know about this in the days before phone tapping I know not but anyway, the thing was that King Charles (the second one) visited Epsom loads in order to take the famous salts and generally have a detox yah? Here Charlie-boy saw Nelly, the vision of redheaded beauty that she was, and thought “worth a punt”. Events played right into Charlie’s hands because, on the night of the 11th of October, Plucky-Bucky ended up in a punch-up outside a pub (who doesn’t) the end result of which saw him stripped naked and shoved unceremoniously into the local nick. So, think about it for a sec: you’re Gwyn, you’re lover’s turned out to be a bit of a bowler and you’ve got the richest man in England if not the world eager to let his snake run amok in your garden. Guess what? Nelly packed her bags and moved in with the King. To be fair to Charlie and her, there was obviously a bit of emotion between them because Nell and he remained friends with benefits until he kicked the royal chamber pot in 1685 with his last words being: “Let not poor Nelly starve.” By the looks of it she’d probably shacked up with another bloke to keep her lifestyle on the go; I mean you’ve got to crack on right?

GuilFest organiser, Tony Scott, said he is confident that he and his team will be able to meet all criteria and return the beloved festival back to the people of Guildford. “We’re really, really excited. A big, big thank you to everybody who signed the petition (that’s a good 4,000 of you Guildfordians) and turned out to the council meeting last October. It’s real people power. Put it in the diaries: 18th, 19th and 20th July. It’s going to be the best GuilFest ever.”

RECIPES: A VALE C

ooking your loved one a romantic dinner is one of the simplest ways to show them how much you care. And it really can be simple to cook a delicious three course meal, as this menu demonstrates. These dishes are so easy to prepare and to cook and will win the heart of any date without you even breaking a sweat (save that for later). Make the mousse a day before to take the pressure off on the night and you’re good to go.

Goat’s Cheese, Apple and Walnut Salad Serves two • 100g round of goat’s cheese • 1 apple, preferably Braeburn or Cox • 2 slices of white bread • 2 tsps honey • 2 handfuls of rocket leaves • 30g walnuts, roughly chopped • 2 tsps extra virgin olive oil • 1 tsp aged balsamic vinegar • Black pepper

1. Cut the goat’s cheese round into halves to make two discs. Core the apple and cut two half centimetre discs from the middle. Using scissors or a biscuit cutter around the same size as the apple slices, cut two circles from the slices of bread. 2. Lightly toast the bread then top each with a slice of apple and a half of goat’s cheese. Drizzle a teaspoon of honey over the top of each goat’s cheese, add a twist of black pepper and put under a medium hot grill until the cheese starts to bubble and brown slightly. 3. Lightly dress the rocket leaves in the olive oil and vinegar, add some of the chopped walnuts then divide between two plates. Place a circle of goat’s cheese, apple and toast on top of the leaves, drizzle a little balsamic over and scatter a few more walnuts to serve.

Rib Eye Steak, Sweet Potato Wedges and Easy Pepper Sauce Serves two • 2 large sweet potatoes • 1 olive oil • 2 tbsp sesame seeds • 1 tbsp paprika • Salt and pepper to taste • 2 thick rib eye steaks • 40g butter • 10 tomatoes on the vine • 30g butter • 1 tbsp olive oil • Salt and pepper • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar • 250 ml beef stock • 4 heaped tbsp extra thick double cream • Black pepper

1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Peel the potatoes then cut into wedges and place them in a large bowl. Using your hands, coat the wedges all over in the oil, sesame seeds, paprika and salt and pepper. Place on a baking tray in the oven for 25-30 minutes until they brown and crisp at the edges 2. Meanwhile, season the steaks with salt and cracked black pepper on both sides and heat the olive oil in a frying pan over a medium-high heat. When the pan is hot, add the seasoned steaks and the butter and fry for 2-4 minutes spooning the melted butter over the steaks as you go. Turn the steaks and add the tomatoes –keep on the vinecontinuing to baste both the steaks and the tomatoes for 2-4 minutes. Remove the steaks and tomatoes and allow to rest on a warm plate, pouring the remaining pan juices over them. 3. For the sauce, add the red wine vinegar to the same pan and cook for about a minute until reduced by half, then add the stock and boil until reduced by a third. Stir in the cream and add as much pepper as required. Boil rapidly for one minute then pour over the steak to serve.

ritten’s is Chef Daniel Britten’s first restaurant and his tight, focussed menu, demonstrates a chef brimming with creativity and the freedom to explore food in his own way. The former decorator-turned Masterchef contestantnow chef-proprietor has spent the last few years working in some of the best kitchens around his native Surrey. And it shows. The décor at Britten’s is minimal and relaxed and ideal for any occasion, be it a group or couple. Soft spot lighting and comfy banquette seating are an invitation to enjoy a long, easy evening of it. A starter of smoked mackerel fillet– skin crisped in the pan;

the flesh tender and flavoursome- was lifted with a scattering of micro-herbs and beetroot and a silky smoked eel mousse laced with lime. Another plate of wood pigeon and pheasant terrine was a seasonal taste of the countryside jacked up with smart flavours from the pickled grapes and pecans. Locally sourced meat is butchered onsite, and this craftsmanship extends to the cooking, as proved by a glorious mains of pork, cooked three ways. Two coffee-rubbed fillets cooked to a moist, juicy blush were crowned with meltingly tender cheek and a rude spike of crispy pig’s ear: a tastier celebration of pork I’ve not had for ages. The other mains of perfectly moist chicken breast –the

seasoned skin cracked and slightly charred over the grill- was exceptional with a fragrant curried truffle sauce and buttery potato gratin. This is comfort food given some real polish, and the desserts were no different. There was a comforting sticky toffee banana pudding that was lighter and far more refined than you’d expect. Similarly, a rich warm chocolate cake managed to be both light and decadent especially when paired with an exquisite salted caramel ice cream. Two months in and Britten’s is already pulling them in, and with food this confident we can see why.

WHERE TO EAT: Cau, Guildford by Rich Lee

au makes little effort to disguise itself as anything other than a temple to meat, especially as they serve some of the best in the world: Argentinian, grass-fed beef. Which is probably why it’s packed most evenings with diners unleashing their ancient ancestral urge to eat something animal. Cau offers plenty of other dishes that wear the diverse Latin and Asian influences of Buenos Aries cuisine, so vegetarians and even pescetarians are just as welcome here. Although I’m not sure they’d see the point. That primal pull is offset with striking modern design: white ribbed metal walls, black

panelling and bold lighting. Wall prints conjure the endless grass and skies of the company’s spiritual home. We enjoyed starters of succulent swordfish skewers with a fragrant Asian dip and spicy, smoky sausages of lamb merguez and Spanish chorizo. And then the serious meat arrived. Crowned the ‘king of steaks’, the Tira De Ancho might require a king’s ransom to afford it, but the half-kilo cut of rib-eye, about 10” long and as thick as my wrist, certainly tasted good enough for royalty. Slow-grilled and lightly dressed in herby, vinegary chimichurri, this was buttery soft steak cooked to medium-rare

perfection, oozing juice and caressing your teeth with every rapturous bite. There’s no room for pretension with food such as this– steak this good demands Cau’s moreish thrice-cooked chunky chips and a pungent garlic aioli or their rich, dark pepper sauce. Playful puddings such as cornflake ice cream sundaes and brownies are great to round off a meal like this, but I loved the crisp and soft and cinnamon-y churros: light doughnut fingers with dulche de leche dipping sauce. It’s little wonder Cau has proven so popular with Guildford’s diners. The winning formula of buzzy atmosphere, brisk, friendly service, sharp décor and seriously good food at prices to suit all budgets is an easy choice.

HERE COME’S THE STORM: Talking to Tamsin Greenway

s the 2014 season approaches tip off we caught up with Tamsin Greenway, the player coach of netball’s Super League stars: the fiercely inclement Surrey Storm, based at Surrey Sports Park.

Having made her England debut in 2004 and amassing more than 50 caps for her country, Tamsin took some time out in 2012 after the birth of her and ‘Sunday Brunch’s’ Tim Lovejoy’s baby daughter.

Hopes & Expectations The aim is always to make top four and when you make top four you never know what’s going to happen. Team Bath, Maverick’s, Thunder, the usual culprits are going to be really strong again this year and we’re aware of that, but we’ve got quite a bit of experience now which will hopefully help us go that one step further. For me, the goal is just to get fit. This is a big year. The most frustrating thing for me would be to come back and not be at the level I was when I stopped.

Ones to Watch Georgia Lees, I think she’s going to make a huge impact coming through in the Centre position and Amy Flannigan; I’ve been so impressed with her coming through the ranks into Wing Defence as well.

The first three home game of the season are sold out, do you feel there’s a growing support for netball? We’ve really worked hard on our brand and I think that shows. It’s now rare that we don’t sell out a game and I think that’s fantastic… it’s so nice to play in front of a full crowd.

Thoughts on Surrey Sports Park as the home of Surrey Storm I think what they’ve done for female sport is amazing. They’ve really taken on the Storm brand and the girls are plastered all around the building…it’s a real home environment. One of the best domestic places I’ve played

in. I know other teams thoroughly enjoy coming down here to play, because it’s a really professional environment.

Do you get to experience the rest of Guildford? Any favourite spots you’d like to share? I tend to shop up and down the hills, yes. Guildford’s lovely. I lived in Bath for 10 years and when I moved here it was certainly a home from home. It’s just a beautiful town.

The Copper Box Arena It was one of our big dreams to play at a bigger venue and have that experience as Surrey Storm players. We sell out most weeks and we could probably sell out twice over. The idea is to put on the big game with our closest rivals and pull in a huge domestic crowd. There are going to be so many England players on display and hopefully it’ll show how many people are out there who are passionate and love the game. It’s really exciting and it’ll be a cracking day.

I’ve come back this year to play and this is my first season back. I’ve never said never to the England set up. I now do a lot of work behind the

SPORT scenes, presenting and commentating on the England games for Sky Sports.

The marketing director of England Netball, Joanna Adams, recently went on a business trip to the UAE and was confronted by a billboard of yourself... do you feel that netball is on the rise globally? Yes, definitely. Netball’s always huge wherever it’s played but it’s usually just about the people who play it, I think that’s mainly do with it being a female sport, so it doesn’t necessarily get the media coverage that I would say we deserve, but I understand why. I was on a billboard for a Gilbert advertisement and they’re trying to raise the netball profile globally. I think in countries like the UAE, it’s amazing for female empowerment to show these sports and it’s amazing to think that we’re part of that.

You’ve returned recently after giving birth to your baby daughter...how have things changed for you personally within Netball? I’m a lot more chilled out, although the girls wouldn’t say that. I think when you have a kid it puts everything into perspective. Getting back into training was probably one of the hardest things I’ve done and not because I don’t like to train, I just love to hang out with my baby girl. But I love the game and I love to win and it was never a choice of not coming back, I was never ready to stop.

Punditry - you get to use one of those screens to detail positioning and what they ‘should have done’...do you enjoy the punditry side of netball? Have you always wanted to use one of those screens? Anybody that knows me knows that I’m a bore off when it comes to netball, I never stop talking about it. It’s nice to show people the sky pad information. For me to be able to simplify the game, I think a.)it helps people already playing and b.) widens the audience, so that people who haven’t watched or experienced netball, might actually think, “I know what’s happening now”. I love the sky pad and am jealous that Gary Neville gets to use it all the time. I want his job.

You recently trained and played with the stars from television’s ‘A League of Their Own’. How was that experience for you? Who misbehaved the most? Who had natural technique? Let’s say I didn’t have to struggle too much to get a group of girls to come and play Jamie Redknapp. A League of Their Own was great for the profile of netball. I think we’ve got to understand that there’s a fine line…you want profile in netball but you want to be taken seriously. They did a fantastic job for us. Jack Whitehall’s a joker and we were in stitches all day, constantly laughing. James Corden - a natural at wing back and actually a very good feeder. I was impressed. (Lindy) We’ve known each other since we were babies and we’ve always shared a serious passion for music which was always a little bit leftfield. We love it so much that we’ve used it in our lives and that’s what’s driven us to where we are today. (Regarding Beats International) we all grew up in the Twickenham area going to the same clubs and parties and it just went from there.

Do you ever see the Beats International crew anymore? (Lindy) Norman (Fatboy Slim) emailed me this morning with a picture of a guy wearing a t-shirt saying ‘Tank Fly Boss Walk Jam Nitty Gritty You’re Listening To The Boy From The Big Bad City This Is Jam Hot’…I thought it was just a random photo, but it was the actual person who said it on the record (‘Dub Be Good To Me’). (Mel) He also listened to the whole show today which is so cool, he text in a few times saying ‘you’re so old school!’

Do you feel ‘Master Cuts’ and ‘Dub Be Good To Me’ have left some kind of legacy? (Mel) I’ve met some amazing people through Master Cuts and through Lindy. A lot of people don’t know that Lindy is the Lindy Layton who sung on ‘Dub Be Good to Me’ (Beats International). She’s not going to broadcast the fact that she sung on that record because it’s just not in her nature. Everybody knows that song, whether you’re young or old.

Thoughts on Guildford?

What do you do? We have a show on Kane FM (The Mrs / Every Tuesday / 1 – 3 pm) that we present. Essentially we’re DJ’s. (Lindy) I’ve always been a DJ, singer and song writer. Nowadays, compilations are ten a penny… everybody makes them. Compilations back in the day were really aimed at DJ’s and Master Cuts produced the ma jority of them. Anybody that knows about music will be thankful for those compilations. Mel was integral to Master Cuts and that’s why we’re here.

Best things about the job? (Mel) We get to play whatever we want. There are no play lists to adhere to. We like to play out a lot of old music and we like to think we help to educate people on where the older samples in songs used today come from.

We love Guildford, it’s always a treat and there’s great shopping. Godalming is also beautiful. Kane FM is wicked. We love what it represents and love that we don’t get paid in a way. There’s no pressure, everyone that is part of Kane FM is doing it for the love and to put music out there. There’s an unspoken code of ethics that the music that gets played has to be good.

What does your free time consist of? (Lindy) We’re continuously looking for music. It’s non-stop.

Are you working on any other interesting projects at the moment? (Lindy) I’m starting to sing again and this show has really helped that actually. I’m doing a bit of work with the Dub Pistols at the moment. I think that if you’re true to what you love that’s just what you do and that’s what happens. You just carry on being creative.
