The Memorials of Guildford

00 years ago the war memorials that we see in our towns and villages did not exist. They did not have any reason to. Four years later they needed to be built for the families of the fallen who did not have bodies to bury. Over the last six months we have photographed all 155 War memorials in Surrey. Over the next four years we will be trying to put names to all of the Surrey residents who died in the First World War. You can see all of the images on our website theguide2surrey.com

hese men died because they ran into the fire. Then as now, the streets of heaven are too crowded with angels. But, some 100 years after the conflict, if we think we have measured our capacity to meet a challenge, we should look up and be reminded that that capacity may well be limitless. This is a time to remember those heroes. To save for them one glance when we go to the places they can no longer go and when the time comes when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, we will take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes left behind.

he sun rose on the first of July 1916 and with its rising so began a battle synonymous with the futility of war, its horror and merciless hopelessness. Though the facts, statistics and desolation of that battle are beyond repute, it is from the sinew of that beast that was the Somme that we find the small tales of huge heroism. History is made by us, all of us, the individuals who were there. Wilfred Nevill was an officer in East Surrey Regiment and it was he who led the East Surrey’s famous “Football Charge” on this first terrible day of the Battle of the Somme some 98 years ago. The orders were simple, some might say murderously so. 8 Battalion Royal East Surrey Regiment were to leave their trenches at Carnoy and engage German positions a mere 300 yards away. These men were no fools. They had served on the front line and knew the dangers,

the cruel drudging monotony of life and death on the front. They all knew what lay over the top of their trenches. All commanders know that motivating your troops, your guys, driving them and pushing together is always at the forefront of your mind. You’re an officer, these men look to you and it was a responsibility that Nevill took seriously as commander of B Company. How would the men react to going over the top, how would they behave? Nevill knew that he had to keep them motivated. Perhaps something familiar, something of home that reminds all Englishmen what it means to be on the same team, our team. Whilst in London before deployment Nevill went and bought 4 footballs which he took to France. Here he gave one to each platoon to kick across No Man's Land. On one were penned the words “The Great European Cup-Tie Final. East Surreys v Bavarians. Kick off at zero” and on the other the ominous words “NO REFEREE”

To even try and describe the intensity and bleakness of the curtain of fire that these men walked into is impossible. In the face of this fire, the unit sustained a heart breaking number of casualties. The unit moved across no man’s land with the footballs before them. Nevill's initiative as an officer and the gallantry of these men saw them gaining their objective. Nevill, like so many of his comrades both before and in the continuing years of the war did not survive. Having led his men across that field he was cut down just metres from the German trench. He was just 2 weeks from his 22nd birthday. Two of his footballs were found nearby. One of the balls is displayed at the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment Museum in Dover while the other is at the regimental museum of the Queen's Royal Surrey regiment near Guildford.

Shall I get to Blighty?. THE DIARIES OF PRIVATE MACKLON

t’s often hard to connect with the past, particularly with the Great War now a hair’s breadth from leaving living memory. We hear the stories; see the photographs but we didn’t know these men and women. This is why historical diaries are so important: they give us a chance to connect with

people through the lines of time and get to know them and, in doing so, bring history to life.

This is why keeping that historical connection alive is so important. Thanks to his family I came to discover Harold George Macklon. Harold was a soldier in the East Surrey Regiment. His life on joining the army certainly sped up as he left a quiet life as a clerk in London and was catapulted into the world of the western front. Serving as a Private during the conflict, he fought at Loos and Meroc. Loos was, in comparison with other small-scale British efforts in the spring 1915, an offensive of huge proportions. Involving six divisions, it was referred to at the time as ‘The Big Push’.

The battle started before extra stocks of ammunition were brought in and without adequate heavy artillery support. This was also the first battle that saw the British use of gas. As Harold would have seen, despite the success of the first day, the reserves were standing by too far back from the frontline and because of this they were unable to exploit the early success. So the conflict went back to the slow pace of a war of attrition, marred with major losses for minor gains.

After being wounded, George became a servant to an officer and soon left the horrors of the trenches behind him returning to England where he guarded German prisoners of war. As Harold later wrote “Somehow I managed to keep a sense of honour and dignity and sometimes even found humour in my life as a soldier.”

It would have been easy for Harold to return home, move on with his life and consign his war experiences to history. But rather than letting his memories disappear he wrote a diary, in time passing it to his niece, Kathleen Curtis. Thus began a tradition with Kathleen later passing the diary to her granddaughter Mandy Stidard.

At this point Mandy saw fit to edit the diary, adding some background chapters about the First World War and the role of the army. She also expanded on Harold’s life by writing about family life in Edwardian London. The book ‘Shall I get to Blighty’ was born and sadly as yet is unpublished despite the family’s tireless work to create something of substance and historical value.

In conclusion though what is amazing about Harold is that connection that I now have that spans the ages and lets me experience those grand twists, the snaps in the whip of time which curled, flicked and made thunder.

WE WON’T FORGET THEM... EVENTS TO REMEMBER THEM BY SATURDAY 19 JULY: Premiere of “Guildford and The Great War” @ The Electric Theatre. Marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, film company Circle Eight have created a new documentary narrated by Matthew Alexander. The documentary closely follows the story of Guildford during those war years and specifically how the war changed everyday life for those who lived in the town. SUNDAY 27 JULY: Organised by Army Benevolent Fund, this is one of the biggest events commemorating the War. Taking place at The Royal Logistical Corp base at Deepcut the day will centre on “A Family Picnic at the Front". On the day there will be a concert as well as displays from Cavalry Horses, marching bands from the Royal Logistic Corps and the Band of the Royal Artillery. Dame Penelope Keith will be there to read poems from the conflict as well as Re-enactors. The day will end with a Drumhead Service at 5 o’clock. SUNDAY 27 JULY: Today will be a commemorative service marking the 100 years since the start of the conflict at Holy trinity Church on Guildford High Street.

THROUGHOUT AUGUST: The British Postal Museum & Archives and the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms will explore the vital role played by the Post Office during the First World War

in an exhibition at Guildford Museum. It tells the stories of postal workers at war and on the Home Front, and examines the essential role played by postal communications. The exhibition will run daily from 11 o’clock until to 5 o’clock and entry is free.

MONDAY 4 AUGUST: An exhibition will be held today at The Worplesdon Memorial Hall centring on the local residents who served during the war. Particularly interesting as this gives an insight into how the small local communities that make up our county were affected. The Exhibition opens at 10.

4 - 15 AUGUST: During this period of remembrance there will also an exhibition on the conflict at Bourne Hall Museum. The museum as well as the exhibition will open daily at 9 o’clock during its two week run. You can contact the museum on 020 8394 1734.

25 SEPTEMBER: On 25 September 1914 Elsie Knocker and Mairi Chisholm travelled to Belgium by motorbike to volunteer for the Women’s Emergency Corps. Their amazing story is told by Dr Diane Atkinson in a talk that will explore the selfless heroism of these two women both during and after the war. The talk will take place at Dorking library and you can book a place on 01483 543599.

15 OCTOBER: 100 Days to Victory is the title of a talk today at Woking library which covers the First World War through the events of one hundred key days during the conflict. The talk is given by Saul David who delves into the individual stories of men and women who fought and died in the war. He even includes stories from his own family’s history.

THE TRENCH EXPERIENCE B

ased here in Surrey are the educational charity The Trench Experience. Specialising in bringing the First World War to life, their aim is to show to the public the sacrifice made by all those who served during the conflict, without glorifying it. They want to commemorate the millions of men and women who fought as well as celebrating the memory of those who died. Over 30 nations banded together to defend our interests and the team at the Trench experience want their collective memory honoured focusing on the history, the politics, social reform and the arts from that most bloody time in our history.

Eddie’s vision was to develop a First World War open air museum, with trenches and artefacts all accessible to visitors

The Trench Experience was founded by Edward Jones. Eddie, as he’s known to his friends, first became interested in the Great War when he heard Wilfred Owen’s masterpiece “Dulce et Decorum Est” as a child. Eddie’s interest soon spawned into a passion which the subsequent years have left undimmed. Spending a career immersed in the world of antiques and auctioneering, Eddie specialised as a book dealer in London and the South East. It was here, surrounded by history, that he became frustrated by museums and how, within them, the exhibits are often behind glass and if not, surrounded by strict instructions not to touch. Eddie’s vision was to develop a First World War open air museum, with trenches and artefacts all accessible to the visitors. So in 2005 he founded The Trench Experience Charity. This may have resulted in a trench system being dug in his back yard, but those were just humble beginnings and from here the charity went from strength to strength. The charity soon found new digs

in the UK’s centre of shooting, Bisley, of which the location is steeped in military history; boarded on all sides by land, totalling 2,500 acres, belonging to the Ministry of Defence, the camp had been requisitioned by the Army during both world wars. It was this that made it an excellent location to set up a base of operations, if you will. This July, The Trench Experience will be opening their new shop on Commercial Way in the heart of Woking in time for the centenary of the outbreak of the war. In addition, land has been secured for a ‘real’ trench experience to be installed. Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice

THE VOLUNTEER’S STORY By Rich Lee For nearly ten years, June Sherry has been volunteering her time at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice’s Day Centre in Farnham, a place for patients to come for a welcome change of environment and to catch up with friends. Here she tells us about what it means to volunteer for the Hospice and the rewards that the work brings…

got involved with Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice and their Day Hospice in 2005, when I came here from Hong Kong to retire with my husband in Guildford. I was looking for meaningful things to do. That same year a very good friend of ours died at St Christopher’s Hospice in London. We were so impressed with the people there and the work they were doing that I knew it was something I had to get involved with. I’m also a people person and so when I heard about Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham I applied to become a volunteer, here in the Day Hospice, and have been doing this ever since. The first thing that really impressed me here was the dignity and care the patients received and the warmth of the people that work here. They care about every little thing that would help a patient. The Day Hospice is a lively, positive place for the patients to come for a day out, to enable them to leave the house and have a change of scenery; a break for themselves and their carers. It is open three days a week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Here they can see clinical staff while they meet fellow patients with whom they can share concerns and provide mutual support. For many, it’s the highlight of their week. When they arrive we’ll make them tea and help them settle in. They’re given a very good lunch - a three course meal, activities such as music and word quizzes and we’re also trained by the Hospice in giving massage which they love. We just make them feel happy and comfortable for the day. Depending on their condition, new patients can come for twelve weeks. After that, if their condition is stable and they have sufficient support at home, they are discharged from the Day Hospice but that doesn’t mean they are cut off from the Hospice. They’ll receive home care and visits from volunteers – for those who want it. And there are other activities they can come in for such as art therapy.

Part of what I do is to escort the patients to and from the Hospice. I love the escorting because I get to meet the patient’s families and learn more about them. I’ve been able to escort a patient to their daughter’s wedding and another for the passing out ceremony of their son. Being able to contribute in this way is very rewarding. Of course, we do lose patients, but the Hospice itself is very supportive. I remember one period, we lost four patients in a month, which affected us volunteers quite badly. The staff said if we needed some counselling, we could talk to them. But as a team, we have been helping together since I started so we’ve found it very useful to talk about it among ourselves and support each other. We can handle it. Volunteering at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice is both humbling and uplifting. I’ve been here nearly ten years and won’t stop. I’ve just become a grandmother and I’ve told my daughter I’ll help in any way I can – but not on Tuesdays when I help at the Hospice! f you have a child that’s aged between 11 and 18 that’s showing signs of being a budding actor/actress, then Kingston’s fantastic Rose Theatre are offering up a marvellous opportunity. While it may seem a way away yet, the Christmas production is looking for youngsters just like them… The Rose is currently auditioning for a stimulating course which will give up to 72 children the chance of a lifetime. The course is auditioning throughout July and the lucky entrants will perform on stage for the Rose’s Christmas production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. The chosen young actors will work alongside professional performers and in front of thousands of local families with the Rose Young Company. The roles are for the Pevensie children and a very active ensemble, with the chorus crucial to the telling of the story. Puppet-based comedy musical Avenue Q comes to Guildford’s G Live at the end of July – we met some of the stars to find out what it’s all about. Spoiler alert: they weren’t human…

he musical genre falls into dangerous territory – it is perhaps the most divisive of all theatrical styles. However, when your lead roles are played by adorable-looking, Henson-esque puppets who sing numbers such as ‘Everyone’s a Little bit Racist’ and ‘The Internet is for Porn’, we think even the most stony-faced musical Scrooge will crack a rather large smile. A quick rundown of the plot is perhaps necessary here. Avenue Q is the story of a recent college graduate named Princeton (that’s the yellow guy who resembles Fred Savage of ‘Wonder Years’ fame) who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. There, he meets Kate, Rod the Republican, Trekkie, urm, Lucy the Slut, and others who help Princeton finally discover his true purpose in life. It’s safe to say that, despite those fuzzy faces, Avenue Q is not for kids – but while that hirsute beast is the internet-smut obsessed Trekkie Monster and the chesty lady about to seduce me is the aforementioned Lucy (curse her charms!), there is something inherently ‘Sesame Street’ about the message. Indeed, as cast members Will Hawksworth and Greg Airey explain, Avenue Q writers intended the play to be a grown-

up love letter to the classic kids TV show – imagine if either Bert or Ernie graduated, moved out and had to face reality, with jobs, relationships and uncertainty. Which is all rather lovely I’m sure you’ll agree. And while the sentimental tone is evident throughout Avenue Q’s racy dialogue, it’s mainly the latter that’s really experienced when your intrepid reporter stood face to face with Trekkie, Lucy

True to its ’inn’ roots, there will also be hot food and drinks.

KIDSZONE GuilFest’s reputation as the UK’s best family festival is no more evident than at the Kidszone, with tonnes of activities to keep the kids entertained troughout the weekend. What drew you towards Country Music? When we watched the film “Walk the Line” we fell in love with ‘Johnny Cash’ and ‘June Carter’. We were completely sold in what we wanted for our future when we heard the Dixie Chicks. Their music inspired us a great deal.

How do you manage to transpose country music themes to your life growing up in Hampshire? We write about what we know. We love the aspects of country music that are about home, land and family and that area of country is not dissimilar from our upbringing in rural Hampshire.

With so many tour dates across the US and the UK this year, how do you find life on the road?

Talking to... THE BOOMTOWN RATS

ob Geldof and the boys are back as the first headliners on GuilFest’s main stage. We spoke to the Boomtown Rat’s drummer Simon Crowe about the band’s storming return to live music… What was the catalyst behind the reformation of the Boomtown Rats in 2013? It was just a natural progression: me and Garry (Roberts – original guitarist) had been going out and doing a few gigs as The Rats a few years ago. Bob came along to a gig of ours in London, and perhaps the thought of somebody else fronting the band playing the songs he’d written might have lured him back in. Bob doesn’t have to do anything for the money anymore, so to speak, so I think he just wanted to go out and prove that the band is a good live act still.

How did it feel to reconnect with your devoted fan-base after 27 years? Really weird at first. At our first show at the Isle of Wight Festival last year, we didn’t know if people were there for us or just because they were there. But it wasn’t until we did the tour last autumn that we proved that there was still the fan-base. It was an amazing, sell-out tour. It was pretty arduous though, I have to say. Playing Boomtown Rat’s music is arduous

enough, but to do a tour almost night after night was quite heavy going, for me and especially Bob who still jumps around the stage.

When you first broke into the spotlight in the mid-70s you were frequently cast as a punk or a new wave band. Did you ever feel somewhat misunderstood? I think so; more misrepresented by the media perhaps. We weren’t part of the punk movement; we were more an R ‘n’ B band like the Stones and the Small Faces. The whole punk thing didn’t really hang on us well. We did Top of the Pops for one thing, which a lot of the punk bands wouldn’t touch. We just thought: bring it on, sell more records and reach a wider audience. Why else do it? For all the stigma about bands selling out, musicians have to work and earn our living making music.

Given the awful tragedy that befell Bob Geldof ’s family this year, was there a moment when the band’s new momentum was cast into doubt? Well, it’s one of the risks of being in a band: if anything were to

happen to any one of us it could stop us in our tracks. But we’ve worked so hard at putting this together now over the last two years, it would take a hell of a lot to replace any of us so it hasn’t stopped the band. We’re still steaming along.

Are there any plans for a new Rats record? Well we’ve got a new E.P. out called Rat Life, which you can buy at the gig. In terms of an album, there’s always talk buzzing around but nothing concrete. It’s always fun to do new music, though.

What do you most enjoy about playing at festivals? I have to say that I think the whole festival culture is absolutely brilliant. I’m really proud to be a part of the band culture that I grew up in and the festival thing is a real progression of that. In this modern world where we’re plugged into everything at all times, it’s a situation where none of that matters. And I take my hat off to all the people that put on these festivals. Some of them are risking enormous amounts of money, only to just break even, if they’re lucky.

Talking to... ASHLEY ROBERTS by Rich Lee

former member of the hugely successful Pussycat Dolls, Ashley Roberts has won over UK audiences after her appearances on Ant & Dec’s Takeaway, ‘I’m a Celebrity’ and Dancing on Ice. But with her newly released single, ‘Clockwork’ and imminent solo album, Ashley’s returning to what she does best: Music. Is England is something of a second home for you now? Yeah, 100 percent! If anything it is home at the moment. And I love London in the summer, I just feel like the city comes alive.

Did it feel like a huge gamble leaving the Pussycat Dolls when you did? It was bittersweet because it was time to go our separate ways for a while, and as much as I loved what I do, I was really excited about living my own life for a little bit. There was some fear of the unknown, but I think you have to take those gambles in life.

You’ve said that your experience in the jungle in ‘I’m a Celebrity…’ changed you. How so?

I faced a lot of fears and it showed that me I could do things I thought I couldn’t and it helped me be more confident in myself. And the response that I got from the UK viewers afterwards was so amazing.

What was the motivation behind recording your solo album? It’s definitely been a huge goal of mine, to prove to myself that I could do it on my own and write about my own stories. The timing is right and it feels right and I’m just grateful to have the platform here in the UK to launch it. But I wanted to come out with Clockwork first to show that I’ve grown as an artist and as a human being. I just really wanted to showcase all the different facets of my personality.

So what can GuilFest-goers expect from your performance on Saturday 19th July? I just want them to have a good time, so I’m planning on having a good time too and bringing a lot of energy and getting up there and doing what I love. I’m looking forward to seeing all the GuilFest peeps!

Talking to... RONI SIZE

his year GuilFest welcomes another Guildford institution with the brand new ACM Presents Stage. The Academy of Contemporary Music, alongside GuilFest, has helped put Guildford on the musical map for many years now and so festy-goers are in for a sonic treat this year when the ACM showcase the best up and coming talent as well as top acts including Drum & Bass and Jungle legend, Roni Size.

What do you most enjoy about playing festivals like GuilFest? What I enjoy is what I call the ‘Glasto experience’, where you go with no preconceptions and you end up seeing the best bands you never knew existed. I also like the fact that you can hear music travelling on the wind. You’ll hear bass and think, what’s that? And then run over and discover there’s like four people in a marquee. But it’s great though.

What have you been working on lately? This year we’ve got an album coming out called ‘Take Control’ which is geared more to the dancefloor and features a lot of up and coming vocalists I’ve been working with. And then early next year there’ll be a new Reprazent album with more vocals and a lot of good songs with quite close-tohome topics.

Do you appreciate the nostalgia people feel for your earlier work or do you feel restricted by it? Not at all. It’s great to have made my mark in history; there are a lot of great artists who never get to see the light of day. So it’s an honour and a blessing.

What can you say about the state of Drum & Bass in 2014? I’m really happy it’s still here, right? It’s kind of crazy though, I remember when the music just belonged in its own realm, in the dark, dingy underground

by Rich Lee of places like Bristol, London and Manchester. But it’s now a worldwide phenomenon with its own community. It’s got its little brother Dub Step; its little sister Trap music; its older brother Hip Hop; first cousin Techno; second cousin electro: it’s a family, it’s all bass and it’s all related.

It must be gratifying to have played such a role in it? It wasn’t something that was really a matter of choice. When we won the Mercury prize, we had to take the bull by the horns and run with it but we billed and name-checked as many as people as we could. So we did a humble job of it is the way I look at it.

You’ve worked with Method Man, Zach de la Rocha and Beverley Knight, among others. Who else would you love to collaborate with?

I’ll be honest with you, it’s got to that stage that whoever walks through my doors I’ll collaborate with. I’m open for business in that sense. I did all those things because I could and it was a great wish list to have, but now I’m in the position where I want people to say “I want to work with Roni.” So I look forward to those scenarios happening.

Roni Size isn’t your real name of course, so what’s the story behind your moniker? Basically I used to hang out with a friend of mine and, you know, boys will be boys. We’d scope the area, see what the girls were like and he’d say “what about her over there?” No, no she’s too small. “Her over there?” Nah, she’s too big. “What about her?” Ah yeah, she’s ‘Roni’s Size’! Ha ha, you had to be there but it stuck!

uilFest favourites Dreadzone return this year on Sunday 20th July. We spoke to drummer and founding member Greg Dread about the band’s 20 year career…

Dreadzone have appeared at GuilFest since 1997. Do you have fond memories of the festival? I do indeed. I always remember how great the crowd were and how well we went down with them. The blend of a normal festival along with the family atmosphere of the place makes it a bit special.

What do you enjoy most about performing at festivals?

How has Dreadzone kept going for over 20 years?

I guess the experience of doing so many over the years means we can give our best during the short allotted time we have. We always hit the ground running and our songs and energetic rhythm driven sound seems so suited to the outdoors.

It’s down to being musicians first and foremost. Dance music artists can have a short lifespan thanks to the DJ led genre; but we have a wide range of influences and ways of writing new material. That and the roots of the band, myself and Leo being a rhythm section for 30 years, and a changing line-up has kept it fresh. And of course we just love what we do.

You’ve been called pioneers of dub and bass music. Did you feel like trailblazers at the beginning, like you were making music that hadn’t been heard before? It didn’t really at the time; we were just hoping people liked it. We had the belief that it was vital to mix up the music that we love. With our taste for dub combined with the emerging dance music scene it felt natural to combine them from a band perspective and sound like no one else.

What can GuilFest-goers expect from your show at Stoke Park this July? Top tunes from our 20 year history and our new album ‘Escapades’: heavy bass, fat beats, sweet melodies, lots of happy bouncing people, smiling, dancing, and a celebration of the best summer festival!

Talking to... GALLOWS Canada, and our bass player manages bands in LA. But we got together this year to start writing new songs - originally an EP for the summer but it’s turned into an album now which is great.

You’ve played all over the world – what countries have surprised you the most? First time going over to Japan was really strange, when we were new on the scene in 2007. We’ve never portrayed ourselves as rock stars or poster boys but there were fans waiting for us at the airport with CDs. I’d be playing a massive Gallows show in London and still kind of blend into the crowd, but in the backstreets of Osaka, we were rushed by Gallows fans taking pictures of everything we did. It was very strange, but a really good feeling.

The genre’s survived dilution by new wave, grunge, emo and pop-punk, so what’s the secret behind Punk Rock’s longevity and continued relevance as a force in music today?

ringing the sound and fury to the Big Cheese Cave tent at GuilFest on 20th July are headliners Gallows, one of the UK’s most eminent hardcore punk bands who burst onto the scene in 2006 with their storming debut album, Orchestras of Wolves. We spoke to guitarist Laurent ‘Lags’ Barnard about the band’s journey… Back in 2011, Gallows were booked to headline at GuilFest but you had to cancel. What happened? We had to cancel a bunch of festivals because (then singer) Frank was ill. It was a shame but we’re full steam ahead and really looking forward to coming back!

What do you most enjoy about playing festivals? When it comes to festivals I always feel it’s best to play in a tent; it’s more of a club vibe and a better atmosphere, which is what Gallows are used to.

Original singer Frank Carter left the band in 2011 followed by his brother,

guitarist Steph Carter. How have Gallows thrived when other bands might have sunk after the loss of such key members? We’ve always tried to make Gallows about the music and focus on the music side of things. We never lost that; things change but we’ve stuck to our guns and stayed true to the music. We’re just lucky we’re still getting away with it!

I think it’s just the attitude and the fact that people can connect with punk rock a lot easier than they can with other genres, perhaps. It’s the community and the sense of togetherness. At a punk rock show, there’s no separation between band and audience. We’re all in it together.

Has singer Wade McNeil, a Canadian, managed to convert you all to Ice Hockey yet? It’s funny because I’m always seeing Wade on Canadian TV, on Hockey panel shows. But he hasn’t managed to convert me yet, no.

You’ve been called the Angriest Band in the UK. Has time mellowed you? It definitely has. When Gallows started there was a real sense of urgency, to just hammer the music into people’s brains as hard as possible. I didn’t really sit back and enjoy myself. I still like to have that energy live but it’s a lot more fun now.

What can audience members who’ve never seen a Gallows show expect at GuilFest on 20th July?

Well, you might get a kick in the teeth but you’ll leave with a smile on your face!

And neither could we. £1 each. BREAD No trip to the market would be complete without a fresh loaf, and on our visit the Celtic Baker’s White Sourdough Bread, £3.90, was just the kind of robust, earthy loaf we were looking for. TEA Among a great selection of fine, loose-leaf teas, we found this perfectly refreshing English Peppermint Tea, £5.20 for 50g, from independent Tea Vendors, Tiger Spring Tea.

While You’re There… We couldn’t resist the aromas coming from the stall of caterers Facing Heaven. These Hampshire based favourites of the Hairy Bikers specialise in chilli products such as salsas and sauces, chilli pastes and oils but when they come to market, they cook up a mouth-watering range of dishes to enjoy right there. You simply can’t miss their enormous paella! But we just had to try their Louisiana Pulled Pork: slow cooked pork marinated in a blend of citrus juices and spices. Succulent and smoky and amazing with their creamy coleslaw and a squirt of hot sauce. A warning though: grab plenty of napkins!

Arguably the best beer festival in the county returns to Guildford Cricket Club this July…

he beer festival – is there a more sure-fire way of getting you excited for the summer? Indeed, if there is a finer example of a seasonal grin-inducer than we are yet to find one… Anyway, these events don’t come much bigger than the Guildford Beer Festival, with over 3000 guests expected at the Guildford Cricket Club on Friday 25th and Saturday 26 July. This year the festival will feature over 70 – 70! – tipples, all of which will be sourced within 30 miles of Guildford. Stouts, milds, IPAs, bitters, lagers, strong ales, citrus ales and cider – the latter of which has seen demand increase double year on year – all be available. In short: it’s a beer lover’s heaven. Beauty Review: The Eco Manicure

s I walked into The Radisson Hotel and was directed through to The Spa, the serenity and professionalism you would expect from a distinguished London spa was instantly perceptible. After being greeted with a smile, a glass of orange infused water, a fluffy robe and a locker key, I was motioned toward the manicure room.

Dead Sea salts and dried rose buds. After a soak therapist Emma exfoliated the skin up to my elbows by rubbing in a mix of Dead Sea salts and organic jojoba oil. This part felt a little rough but Emma told me she could reduce the pressure if it got too much. A wedge of lime, a natural antibacterial, was then rubbed into my cuticles and over my nails.

A far cry from the buzz of your standard nail salon, the atmosphere throughout The Spa is calm. Once I’d made my rather flamboyant colour choice of turquoise polish with a layer of multicoloured sparkle on top – it is festival season after all - my eco friendly pamper session began.

Skin now supple and polished it was time for a hand and arm massage starting with a hydrating balm of shea butter, sweet orange, neroli and Vitamin E, followed by an Indonesian massage oil with patchouli and ylang ylang. A cuticle oil with Rosa mosqueta to soften and nourish was then applied to my nails before filing them into a squoval shape (between square and oval). Base layer, polish, sparkle and a sealing coat were applied and dried before I headed to treatment room four for my Eco Pedicure. After a foot soak, exfoliation and some light buffing I was directed to the massage bed and Emma placed a soothing pillow pack over my eyes. For the rest of the hour I simply laid back and relaxed as Emma went through similar motions to the manicure until my toenails matched the jazzed up shine of my newly painted fingernails. As I emerged fresh, calm and with a fortnight of fabulous nails, the scent of essential oils wafted about me and I couldn’t help but feel rather cosmopolitan in my cheeky find of a couple of luxurious pampering hours in the middle of a bustling town centre. wo years ago Leanne opened Velvet Rooms boutique hair salon in Chobham, bringing with her over a decade of salon experience, including two years working all over Europe as an ID artist for L’Oreal. After 18 months the demand for luxurious head and hair beauty was so high that the Velvet Rooms team packed up their scissors, shampoos and dyes and moved to a bigger building. It’s not difficult to fathom why the Velvet Rooms has had such an impressive first few years in business. On entering you are greeted with a warm atmosphere, made that little bit better by the presence of Murphy the Dog, calmly snoozing on his velvet throne. The theme is luxury. And from the opulent decor to the prestigious Shu Uemura products lining the walls, the whole set up emanates a sense of indulgence. Leanne advised me on which colours and cuts in my makeshift catalogue of re-style ideas would suit my face shape and personality. Being of a somewhat eccentric nature, the idea of cutting all but an inch off the back and introducing purple to my usual platinum blonde seemed an exciting, if a little nerveracking, option. Before taking the purple plunge I had a look at some of Leanne’s work on The Velvet Rooms app and knew I was in expert hands – the app has a handy offers page and loyalty section by the way! Leanne got to work, effortlessly snipping away at the back and sides whilst positively buzzing with enthusiasm. Prelightener was then applied to the longer hair on top before Leanne mixed a mauve Ma jirel L’Oreal colour with a pre-lightener base to make a unique colour for the lower half of my hair. Before all was washed off and I received my Indian Head Massage (which comes as part of the service) a heater was left rotating over my head to help draw out any undesirable yellow tones. Coffee with biscuits and chocolates were supplied throughout my two-hour trip to what felt more like a day spa than a hair salon and since leaving, I have been complimented on my hair everywhere. GUILDFORD CRICKET FESTIVAL At some point each year, Surrey CCC don’t play at their home at The Oval in Kennington – they come to Guildford…

he Festival is the traditional name for the week when Surrey CCC come and play professional cricket at Guildford Cricket Club, and this year it takes place at the end of July. There is always a distinct Festival atmosphere - the ground at Woodbridge Road is transformed, with marquees, public stands and seating around the boundary edge for over 2,500 spectators. So what can you expect? Well there are two matches taking place – the first is Surrey CCC v Kent CCC in the LV County Championship from Sunday 20 to Wednesday 23 July. This is the long form of the game for the purists. If you’re a fan of the more ‘smashy smashy’ batting style then perhaps you’d prefer to visit on Sunday 27th July, when Surrey take on Glamorgan in the Royal London One-Day Cup. It is at this point that it’s worth telling you about who actually plays for Surrey at the moment – Kevin Pietersen, arguably the greatest English batsman of the past 20 years. Graeme Smith, former South Africa captain who is also one of the all-time greats, plays for Surrey too – potentially along with teammate Hashim Amla; currently ranked as the fourth best batsman in the world. t is local hearsay that just miles from Godalming, on the historical estate of Peper Harow (‘twas mentioned in the famed Domesday book of 1086 as Pipere Herge don’t you know?), historical records indicate that one of the earliest games of cricket was played between the then state owner Mr Alan Brodrick 1st Viscount Midleton’s men and His Grace the Duke of Richmond’s. It was often the case before sporting fixtures, back in the day, that the rules and legislation of the games that were to be imminently played would be verbally agreed by the head honchos of both camps. In the summer of 1727, it would appear that Mr Brodrick and His Grace had had enough of the verbalised format of the rulings, therefore laying down their proverbial law of what we now know as Cricket. Of course the laws of the game have changed much over the centuries, but nevertheless, why not play a game of Cricket this summer, 1727 style? Rules below!

The Articles of Agreement by and between His Grace the Duke of Richmond and Mr Brodrick (for two cricket matches) concluded the 11th of July 1727. Imprimis. 'Tis by the aforesaid Parties agreed that the first Match shall be played some day or this instant July in the county of Surrey; the Place to be named by Mr Brodrick; the second match to be played in August next and in the County of Sussex, the Place to be named by the Duke of Richmond.

2nd. That the wickets shall be pitched in a fair and even place, at 23 yards from each other.

3rd. A ball caught, cloathed or not cloathed the Striker is out.

4th. When a Ball is caught out, the Stroke counts nothing.

5th. Catching out behind the Wicket allowed.

6th. That 'tis lawful for the Duke of Richmond to choose the Gamesters, who have played in either of his Grace's two last matches with Sir William Gage; and that 'tis lawful for Mr Brodrick to choose the Gamesters within three miles of

Pepperharowe, provided they actually lived there last Lady day.

7th. That 12 Gamesters shall play on each side.

8th. That the Duke of Richmond and Mr Brodrick shall determine the Ball or Balls to be played with.

12th. If any Doubt or Dispute arises on any of the aforementioned articles, or whatever else is not settled therein, it shall be determined by the Duke of Richmond and Mr Brodrick on their Honours; by whom the Umpires are likewise to be determined on any Difference between them.

14th. The Batt Men for every One they count are to touch the Umpires Stick.

15th. That it shall not be lawful to fling down the wickets, and that no Player shall be deemed out by any wicket put down, unless with the Ball in Hand.

MAKE A PLAN AND STICK TO IT The only way to ensure that a work trip isn’t going to nail your fitness schedule is to dedicate a time of day for your workout. Say you’re working from 8 to 5; then why not get up an hour early to get in a good sweat? Let’s all be honest here people; time during business travel is a valuable commodity so long runs may not be feasible. Get unconventional: hit the hotel stairs. Running stairs is an epic workout. Your heart rate goes anaerobic quickly which as we know maximizes your time like nothing else. Use your room and everything in it. It keeps your body burning calories throughout the day as well as helping your mind unwind. If you’re at a conference why not walk from the hotel instead of using a cab or car? If you’re travelling by plane take advantage of stop-overs by not heading to the nearest bar and walking around duty free. Instead of using the escalator, use the stairs. There’s always loads to look at in a terminal and time goes faster when you’re not sat in one spot.

BUSINESS How did the challenge from Richard Branson come about? One evening I had finished Richard Branson’s book and was really inspired by it. He’s always been breaking world record challenges so I wrote a blog post basically seeing if he would challenge me to do something. I tweeted it out a few times and a couple of weeks later he tweeted back.

What’s the submersible made of? It’s a glass sphere about as big as a football and about an inch thick designed to go down to the bottom of the trench. Inside that we had the GPS and a light. That is held in a metal frame and underneath the sphere is a camera and pressure sensor inside a titanium tube. It has a weight attached to it and a fizz lid, like a coca cola bottle, and a little wire that holds the weight. You send an electrical current through it to snap the wire and the weight falls off. Then to make it come back up it’s got two blocks of syntactic foam. The camera was a stripped down go pro.

How did the launch go?

When we got there I was expecting sunny Caribbean weather but it was tropical thunderstorms so we had to wait a couple of days before we could go out. It took about 10 hours to get to the Milwaukee Deep trench. We dropped it in and the submersible sent us the data that allowed the people at Trident Sensors to do some calculations. The target was 8,500 meters and I was shocked when they told me how far down they think it went. I’m trying to give as much as I can away without giving that final result! I got really sea sick whilst out there so won’t be going on any more boats anytime soon!

What’s next for Joshing Talk?

Two years on and Josh is back from launching his submersible in Puerto Rico, is busy editing the video and gearing up to announce the resulting depth of the project. We asked Josh how the project came about, how it went and what’s in store for the future of Joshing Talk.

I definitely think it’ll be a long distance project and I’d like to structure it so it’s doing something to help or find a solution to climate change or deforestation or something. But I’m open to suggestions if any of the readers have any! I want to keep pushing the frontiers. If people tell me something can’t be done I’d definitely keep pushing that, just to make sure it can’t be done and we’ll see where we end up.

ETHICAL, GREAT TASTING COFFEE COMES TO GODALMING What do you get when a charity, a delicatessen and an artisanal coffee roaster get together? Well, for one thing, some of the finest organic coffee available on the high street. eeds for Development are a charity based in Shalford and have been supporting the poorest people in Uganda since 2007. They advance funds to farmers groups so they can buy seeds and tools. This is paid back at the end of the season when the crops are harvested and sold. The money is then used by the group as a collective fund. It was when the charity’s founder Alison Hall met Ed Simpson, owner of the Godalming Food Company deli that the idea was born. “We were already thinking about selling coffee to take away and we became really taken with the idea of making it an ethical cup, being able to trace it right back to the farmers who would receive support from each cup sold.” The Bukonzo beans grown by those farmers are hand blended and roasted by Graham and Petra of coffee roasters Redber in Merrow producing a truly exceptional coffee, to be sold as The Godalming Food Company’s

house blend. “Everybody should be able to drink the best quality coffee and know that it’s been ethically produced. I would love this to become the local Surrey coffee of choice!” says Alison. “We drink so many cups of coffee every day that making such a regular activity also about giving back could have a huge impact,” agrees Ed. “With £2 for each 1kg of beans used going straight back into the charity supporting these Ugandan farmers, it could make a substantial difference.” The coffee is already on sale at the Godalming Food Company to takeaway, or as ready ground and beans to grind at home. What do you do? I am the organiser of GuilFest

What are the best things about your job? The best thing is that we’ve been doing it for over 23 years now; it’s the team coming together, seeing the festival come together and everybody getting involved year on year.

What started as a party for you and your friends in the park some 23 years ago has grown into an event for the whole community that people feel passionately about. Did you ever think that would happen back when you started? When we first started we just did it, because we were a group of Guildfordian’s and we wanted something to happen in Guildford. It was very quiet; there was only one nightclub and pubs closed at 11 and there was nothing going on in the town. So we thought let’s set something up in the park, and that was back in 1992.

GuilFest is famed for its eclectic line-up; from local acts to legendary acts. Who has been your favourite act that you’ve booked? My favourite artist has to be Paul Weller, when he played for us back in 2005. Obviously he’s a local lad and he seemed to pull out all the stops… a real highlight!

In a dream world, who would your headliners be? Let me see…Kool & the Gang, Human League and The Boomtown Rats!

How did it feel this time last year when there was no GuilFest to prepare for? Probably like being a mum and watching your youngest head off to university for the first time and then realising a few months down the line that that child is not there. It was one of those feelings. 2013 was a very empty year. The good thing was that we were able to go and have a look at some other festivals and then come up with some really good ideas for this year’s festival.

What is going to make this year’s GuilFest different from the rest? Well, we’ve got a new area called The Spaced Inn, which is going to be an interactive arts area, which I think is really exciting. I think what’s great is that because we’ve missed a year and we’ve come back, everybody involved with GuilFest is doubly enthusiastic and making this year’s festival the best one ever.

What dreams would you like to fulfil? Seeing England (football team) to go a round further in four years’ time, and that really is a dream, and that in 20 years’ time we will still be doing GuilFest.

What’s your favourite spot in the area? I would have to say Guildford Lido and Newlands Corner.

When you’re not running a festival, what does your free time consist of? Playing football if I can, and if I’m not injured, then generally mucking around in Stoke Park.
