Our Citizens on… DEVELOPI

Adam Kite | 27 | Personal Trainer

I

t’s not necessary. It will just create more traffic and floods. We’ve got enough business as it is and we don’t need any more.

I

n Surrey we are well known for our prized areas of outstanding natural beauty. But are they in danger? The preparation for the new local plan and how we are to cope with the expected growth of the county has left question marks over the retention of green belt land… We hit the town to see where our citizens stand on the proposed development of green belt areas and where, if not on that land, they think we should build to accommodate our growing population.

I don’t think we need to build and ruin our landscapes. There are loads of empty houses in Guildford.

Charlotte Scott | 26 | Ayurvedic Therapist

I

f Surrey is known for its Surrey Hills and green belt, picturesque countryside and we start giving in and losing all that to build new homes it’s just going to snowball and we’ll lose all of it. It wasn’t long ago that we weren’t even allowed camper vans or mobile homes on green belt. We just need to look at places that aren’t being used. The amount of huge buildings that are just taped off. You could renovate these buildings and create something beautiful.

ING ON GREEN BELT LAND

Steve Tranter | 61 | Horticulturalist

I

think we’ve got a situation where there is a desperate shortage of housing for the growing populous of the county. There isn’t enough supply for first time buyers to get in there and get on with it and it will bring prices down so I think it’s good. I’m all for building on available space and if that happens to be green belt then so be it.

Gill Jardine | 61 | Counsellor/ Psychotherapist

I

t’s sad to lose green belt land but it’s sadder that people don’t have anywhere to live. We can’t swan around in our big gardens and comfortable homes while there are families out there with nowhere to live. However, I think the building should be respectful to existing residents with regard to infrastructure matters. I live in an area where development has started where there are well known problems with drainage and flooding. Homes need to be built but the decision makers should consider existing problems first.

Tyler Drury | 20 | Supervisor/Sales Assistant

T

hese green sites are important to the country and to Surrey and I think building on them will damage the reputation of the green areas we have. I think we should build in areas that are already built up anyway, in areas that aren’t green belt and in places that won’t destroy animal habitats.

Philip Mitchell | 48 | Photographer

W

ithout green belt towns like Woking, Guildford and Worplesdon will be indistinct from each other. The green belt should be protected but if there is no other alternative we should be able to at least consider a sensibly selected area. We do need new houses. Knocking down existing ones and building smaller, newer ones will do something but anything that’s done has got to be done holistically.

Russ Earwaker | 34 | Computer Games Designer

I

f there is nowhere else to put the houses then they need to put them somewhere. I don’t want to see them ruining the countryside but to be honest, all we mostly do is look at it. If we have a real need for houses then we should use it. If there is space to renovate or blow stuff up and rebuild it then they should do that but if there is no space I think it’s alright to build on green belt.

Victoria Johnston | 24 | Student

I

think it’s completely against what Surrey is supposed to stand for. By taking away these green belt areas it’s just going to become exactly what happened to Milton Keynes. I think we should get bigger but the places of ecological beauty should be kept as much as possible. I think there are a lot of derelict areas across Surrey and I disagree with the amount of business parks. We have Slyfield, we have Artington, we have Ladymead. They’re all business parks and if you have that much land surely you can put it to better use than by just having a massive car park.

OUR HISTORY: Pike Prophecy ...A POTTED HISTORY OF WHERE WE LIVE AND WHO LIVED HERE by Will Knowlton

M

eet Maurice Abbott and his wife Alice. Maurice was a Guildford cloth maker, just starting out, and Alice was expecting a child. Maurice was getting all sweaty-palmed because his business was new and struggling to get established, and with a new child on the way and no guaranteed income the missus was worried too. Well, we’re the customary few lines into the article; time to dial up the crazy and get controversial. Alice woke up one morning claiming she’d had a dream where an angel or something had told her that her baby would be a fine and strong lad, and that if she ate some pike from the river he would become a rich and powerful man. No doubt old Maurice looked at her in that way that we men do when they know something is just plain bone but can’t be shagged with an argument, so off to the river they went. Sure enough they spotted a pike and in a scene that was missing only the Benny Hill music, Maurice bowled into the river and went for it. I’m shocked to report he failed. Now because Guildford’s a small town, the story of Mental Maurice and his elusive pike got around. Maurice seemed to start getting more business, what with people coming to ask him about his up-the-duff crazy wife and her pike. Maybe ‘Marketing Maurice’ would have been more apt? Being pregnant comes with a finite timeframe and Alice was getting a bit desperate. She also came to that realisation that all

women eventually come to which is that if you want something done, don’t ask a man, go and do it yourself because they’re useless. So down to the river Alice waddled taking her other bucket and a bit of rope. She plonked herself on the bank and dropped said bucket in.

after an endless, endless labour, when a man truly learns his own uselessness, a boy popped out and they called him George.

The next night brought visitors. Curiously, they were all gentlemen of the town who were apparently in awe of her catching a pike (a And she didn’t have to wait long, pike!) and came to say well done no the pike verily leapt into her and check Alice and buggerlugs pale within seconds and she pulled were okay. These men mentioned that they would be quite happy it in. The story of her success spread throughout the community. to support young George in his Yes indeed, in the early hours of education as he grew up. Because the next morning her uterus kicked of his mother’s fishing prowess of course, no other reason at all. off, the midwife was sent for and A while later Alice Abbot fell pregnant again and guess what? Certain affluent men of the town visited again promising to sponsor the child if it was a boy. And the next one. In total three boys had their education paid for. Mary was one satisfied woman! George went on to become Archbishop of Canterbury; the other brothers became Mayor of London and Bishop of Salisbury respectively.

...So there you have it. A spot of fishing and all was well. We should head down the Wey and have a go before the next Euromillions or the world cup; we always need help with that. Trouble is you need a licence nowadays, I mean, you need a license for everything don’t you? Except having kids.

hy you? Well the fine line between making the right decision and the wrong decision is in your hands, and when the chips are down, the penalties lost and the referee’s too slow to see what you can see; it’s easy to lash out. We all want England to win by a mile and we’re all straining and on the edge, but by making one bad decision, just one, your life can switch to a different path before you realise what’s happened. The message from the people who look after all of us here, Surrey police, is clear. The World Cup is not an excuse for violence. Surrey police

WORLD CUP VIOLENCE Let’s not let it happen again.

I

t’s set to be very special, with its colour, carnival atmosphere and passion; this year’s World Cup from Brazil has us all excited. Sadly though, there is a dark underside, a hidden face to the competition that can dampen all our hopes and dreams of sport bringing us together. Domestic violence, as well as violence on our streets, is expected to peak during this ma jor tournament. But it’s not the game’s fault, its people making the wrong decisions, decisions that echo long after the crowds have gone and the trophy is safely locked in the winner’s cabinet. Those decisions are made by you.

COMMUNITY

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Community wants everyone to enjoy the summer’s tournament but to be under no illusion: the minority who ruin events for everyone else will be dealt with robustly, using the full force of the law. The community we share, and the police, should not and will not tolerate violent behaviour.

PAINFUL STATISTICS

T

he statistics are staggering. Looking back to the most recent World Cup in 2010, in Surrey, domestic violence rose by 26% and incidents of violence on our streets swelled by 14.5%, including a 33% rise in alcohol related violence.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

T

ackling domestic violence is a priority for Surrey Police and during this World Cup they will be introducing new powers to give them the edge to do so. It’s common that someone who is suspected of committing domestic abuse can sometimes be back at the scene of the abuse within hours of arrest. To tackle this, police now have the power to issue a new form of notice called a “Domestic Violence Protection Notice” (DVPN) and “Domestic Violence Protection Order” (DVPO). These come into effect on Thursday, 12 June, just in time for the start of the World Cup. What the DVPN does is ban the suspected abuser from going back to the victim´s home and having any contact with them for up to 48 hours. This is issued in police custody, with approval from the duty Superintendent. It is a first step because during the next 48 hours police can then apply, through the Magistrates Court, for a DVPO. The order differs from the notice in that it stretches the same ban for up to 28 days. This time is crucial for support services and the police to work together as a team to keep the victim safe as well as encourage and support them in bringing a case against their abuser.

What’s important to remember is that DVPNs provide immediate safety for the victim and do not require the victim´s authority. This is key because often the victim is so shell-shocked that they can’t see the abuser for what they are. Fortunately, for them and for the rest of us, the police are under no illusions and have the power to protect us during what should, for the vast ma jority, be a fun and safe celebration of world-class football. Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice

THE FUNDRAISE R By Rich Lee When his father passed away from liver cancer, Charlie Vaughan-Griffith wanted a way to thank the Hospice that had cared for him so well during his final weeks. He found it at the end of a gruelling yet lifeaffirming 1500 mile bicycle ride from London to Gibraltar, raising £13,500 along the way…

How did you come into contact with Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice? It all began when my father was diagnosed with liver cancer. Dad was given two weeks to live and we didn’t know what to do. We were devastated. Then our doctor recommended Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice who sounded terrific as we just wanted Dad to be comfortable.

How did you find the Hospice? We were absolutely blown away by the friendliness of the staff and their caring nature. The environment and level of care was unbelievable and we were put at ease straight away. Dad had his own room where he received fantastic treatment. It picked his spirits up so much that he was able to come home for his last few weeks. It had an enormous impact on my father and us. Just seeing him relax and be able to come to terms with the situation he was in was a huge relief for us and we’re eternally grateful to the staff there for getting us to that point.

When did you get the idea to ride from London to Gibraltar in aid of the Hospice? I was looking for something I could do to support the Hospice after all they’d done for us. I do quite a lot of cycling so it occurred to me that a bike ride in honour of his memory would be a project that everyone could buy into and support. When my father was young he’d attempted a similar ride but was knocked off his bike in Spain and never completed the route. So I knew that’s what I need to do: finish his journey.

How long did it take? It ended up taking me and my friend, Humphrey Butler, about two and a half months but we took the long route. It was the middle of summer as well and perfect cycling. On the way, I participated in a road race in the Alps in aid of Help for Heroes, as my father was in the army.

Was it a very tough challenge? We didn’t really get in too much trouble apart from a few mechanical issues along the way. It did get very arduous though, especially doing 120 kilometres a day, carrying around 30kg in our panniers. And France gets bloody hot in August.

It must have been a very emotional journey to undertake, to follow your father’s route like that… Definitely. I remember when we crossed the Pyrenees and arrived at a little town called San Feliu de Guixols in Spain. It was where Dad had finished his ride in his youth. There was an old monastery there and I lit a candle and left a photo of the both of us. It was a very special moment for me. The ride gave me lots of time, to think and to grieve, and I ended the journey in a really positive frame of mind. I felt we had achieved a wonderful goal and raised £13,500 for the Hospice.

Who else should fundraise and how? We need to galvanise people, particularly younger people. It’s the younger people who are fit enough to attempt fantastic challenges like mine, to raise money for charities like Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice and have some seminal experiences in the process. But they don’t all have to have to involve cycling to Gibraltar!

Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice provides palliative care across West Surrey and North East Hampshire and supports over 140 families, patients and carers. With only 15% of their costs covered by the NHS, they need to raise £15,000 a day to operate. If you would like to support the amazing work that they do call or 01252 729400visit www.pth.org.uk to find out more.

t’s a sad fact that, in our lifetime, 1 in 18 of us will be diagnosed with Bowel Cancer. This terrible disease is the third most common cancer in the UK, and the second biggest cancer killer. Like many cancers early detection is paramount and the sooner it’s diagnosed the more effective eventual treatment will be. Enter GUTS (Guildford Undetected Tumour Screening). Founded back in 1983, GUTS was responsible for starting the country’s first bowel cancer screening programme. This pioneering work resulted in some 20,000 patients being screened in the first year of the programme. Looking at this figure on paper it’s easy to appreciate the size of the number but also easy to stop at that and not realise what the number actually means. Those first few, and the countless others since, have helped GUTS achieve

exponential steps forwards in bowel cancer diagnosis, care and management. That’s a fancy way of saying that they’re saving lives, which is amazing. Their research alone has been published in medical journals and made a massive contribution to the treatment of colorectal cancer. Fund raising is also a key part of their work and it has borne fruit in fantastic ways. Successful projects have included funding for a Da Vinci Surgical Robot as well as a Genetic Analyser. The funding also provides for over 50,000 faecal occult blood testing kits being sent out all over the south. Needless to say these happy few are really making headway in the fight against this horrible disease. So what can you do? Well donations are of course welcome and go a long way to helping their work, but why not join in

with one of their many fundraising days? Coming up on the 18th of July there will be an Open Tennis Tournament in aid of GUTS at the Godalming Tennis Club which is open to members and nonmembers alike. August the 13th at Loseley Park will see an evening of classic jazz performed by none other than UK jazz vocalist Tina May and award winning pianist Nikki Iles, with the support of Steve Brown on drums and Marianne Windham on double bass. The Jazz will be in the Great Hall at the house and tickets are just £20. Included will be a glass of wine and canapés. You can call 01483 408316 to reserve your tickets. So go on, have some fun and help GUTS fight the good fight. For more information visit gutsfbc.co.uk or call 01483 408316

So we sat Rigby down with some popcorn to give his assessment… Rigby, who’s E.T? E.T is an alien who gets stuck here when his mummy and daddy leave without him. But it wasn’t their fault because some baddies came and scared them. Oh no, is E.T sad? No he’s ok because he makes friends with Elliot, who’s a boy, and they have fun together. Who are the baddies? Well, they’re these people who want to look at E.T and see what he’s like, but they scare E.T because he just wants to get home but I wasn’t scared. What was the most exciting bit? Well probably when E.T makes the little boy, who’s called Elliot, and him fly on the bicycle but I also like it when Elliot shows E.T his Star Wars toys because I have

Twelfth Night at Guildford Castle

Y

ou know, you can really tell that summer’s arrived when the incredibly talented Guildford Shakespeare Company return for their wildly popular open air performances. And this year it’s the turn of Twelfth Night, the Bard’s classic tale of mistaken identity. Featuring some of Shakespeare’s favourite characters – Sir Toby Belch, Malvolio, Viola, Sir Andrew Aguecheek – and some of his most enduring poetry, Twelfth Night is a glorious, frivolous mix of wine and song, romance and trickery. Running between Thursday 12th and Saturday 28th June, this performance will take place in the gorgeous surroundings of Guildford Castle. We should also like to point out that GSC’s next production, Henry V, will take place at Guildford Cathedral between 14th and 26th July – the first time they have hosted such a long-running theatre event. Keep your eyes peeled in next month’s The Guide 2 Guildford for more… Tickets are £21 for adults, £ 17.50 Concessions, £ 16.50 Matinees. Visit guildford-shakespeare-company.co.uk for times, tickets and much more info…

“WHO?”

L

et’s give you a bit of info about the Guildford Fringe Theatre Company first of all. Having formed in 2012 with a view to bring a little bit of the West End to Surrey, they have gone from strength to strength, hosting such memorable shows as ‘The Last Five Years’, ‘Me, As a Penguin’, ‘Owls in the Moss’ and the unforgettable ‘Cinders the Adult Panto’. This culminated in the first-ever Guildford Fringe Festival in 2013. The festival featured plays, musical theatre, stand-up comedy, debate groups, movie nights, cabarets, quiz nights, music, art exhibitions and even burlesque. Indeed, throughout July, Guildford Fringe staged at least one event each night.

23

Arguably the highlight of this summer’s entertainment schedule will be the events hosted by friends of The Guide 2 Guildford and allround entertainment gurus the Guildford Fringe Theatre Company. This year, between 1st and 27th July, the company hosts Guildford Fringe Festival – and it’s going to be brilliant… “And we’d like more of the same for 2014 please! It is truly looking like a superb event and is growing by the day.” Exciting indeed – and as you’d expect there’s way too much to list here. But we have to shout about a couple of events taking place…

“LOVE ME!... WHY?”

B

ecause, the company’s performance of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ is going to be particularly brilliant. Set in the roaring 1920s, there are two different (and both staggeringly beautiful) venues with which to see this unique production - Clandon Wood on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July, and Bramley’s incredible Wintershall Estate between Wednesday 16th and Sunday 20th July.

THIS SUMMER…

“HATS OFF!”

H

owever, as you’d expect, 2014 promises to be even bigger. In July this year though they will be popping up in numerous venues in Guildford including The Bellerby Studio, GLive, The Keep Pub, The Keystone, The Electric Theatre, Bar Des Arts and Boileroom.

N

“We were really finding our feet at last year’s festival, but it flew by without a hitch thanks to the wonderful and talented acts involved” says Guildford Fringe Festival Founder and Director Nick Wyschna.

Neither of these events are to be missed – but there’s so much more to experience. Visit guildfordfringefestival.com to see all that’s in store between 1st and 27th July.

ext up, it’s the five-star rated tribute to the World’s most famous comedy duo. ‘Hats Off To Laurel and Hardy’ is being staged at the Back Room of The Star Inn at 7:30pm on Saturday 19th July 2014. This wonderful performance will have even the most ardent slapstick-hater in stitches.

Talking to... PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING W

eaving samples of public information films and radio with guitars, banjos, drums and electronics, Public Service Broadcasting are the innovative London based duo that have set critics and audiences alight since the release of their 2013 album Inform, Educate, Entertain and single, Spitfire. Bringing their dazzling live show to the Good Time Guide Stage at GuilFest on Friday 13th, here we speak to J. Willgoose, Esq. about their unique fusion of sound and imagery…

by Rich Lee Where did the concept behind PBS come from? It came from listening to radio one day and hearing a programme about the British Film Institute who had just released their films to the public for the first time. I’d made some songs with samples before but thought I’d make an album where every song was based on public information films. And then I thought I was a terrible, pretentious idea and definitely shouldn’t do it. But I kind of did it anyway.

But the music goes beyond mere nostalgia… From my point of view it’s about very much more than just nostalgia. When you look at how our live show is constructed it’s about using today’s technology with messages from the past and drawing links between the two. And that’s what I find interesting about it. If it was purely nostalgia I wouldn’t find it engaging.

So it’s not just an excuse to wear corduroy? Well, corduroy is the ‘Cloth of the King’, literally! Not for nothing is it called that…

Was there a moment when you realised that people were really starting to take notice? Probably the first time I thought this was going somewhere was when we played the Bull and Gate in Kentish Town in July 2012. It just felt different: it had sold out, the atmosphere was great and it was one of the hottest gigs we’d ever played. It just seemed people were connecting with our music. And it was the first time I’d seen someone walking up the street wearing one of our t-shirts!

And you’ve had a very busy couple of years since... Yeah, we’ve done over 220 gigs since then. We released the album and toured all over the shop: in America this year and we’re in Europe at the moment and writing new music in between, so it’s kind of been relentless but very exciting.

Do you prefer live performance over recording or elements of both? I think it’s somewhere in the middle. The most rewarding part of the whole chain is when you’ve been working on a recording for ages and then you finally play it live and you get a good reaction

from it. It’s a great feeling.

What does a band like yours do on tour, after the shows? You can probably guess from our image that we’re not going to be rock and roll hellraisers. It would be a bit jarring if we were. When you’ve toured as much as we have in the last year then you learn that you have to really take care of yourselves. If we’re feeling especially rock and roll we might have a couple of whiskeys but that’s about it.

Finally, what can GuilFest audiences expect from your headline show on Friday 18th July? Well, they can expect to see a lot of corduroy for one thing! But they’ll see the two of us making music as well as a whole world of visual distraction at the same time. We love playing festivals – they’re the ultimate as you’re playing to audiences that are there for you and want to have a good time with you. It’s a privilege.

and... SAM BAILEY

by Rich Lee

W

hen Sam Bailey won the X Factor in 2013, it was the realisation of a dream the singer had spent twenty years pursuing. Now, with a best-selling album and UK tour behind her, Sam is bringing her incredible voice to the Good Time Guide Stage at GuilFest on Saturday 19th July…

You said you’d have been happy just getting through to the final of X Factor. How does it feel to have exceeded your own goals so spectacularly? It’s been amazing. When I was on the live shows my target was just to get through that week, I never set myself goals beyond that. I’m a realist and I think that’s what kept me calm.

You’ll be heavily pregnant with your third child when you take to the stage at GuilFest – most mothers would take it easy but you release an album and embark on a UK tour. When do you plan to take a break? It has been pretty tough with regards to appearances and singing and it has been quite tiring. The process is something you have to get used to and I think I have, now. I’m loving it. I am taking some time off around August. I’ve got pretty good people around me, a great support network so if those other celebrity mums can take time off then I can too!

Your debut album, the Power of Love, has been the fastest selling album of 2014 so far and went to number one on its release. How do you feel about its success? It’s been great; it was coming out for Mothers’ Day so I was expecting it to sell quite well. But my album’s still going strong which is nice to realise that people are still talking about it, still buying it.

On the album, you duet with Michael Bolton and Nicole Scherzinger – who else would be your dream duet partner? Definitely Freddie Mercury. Alive? I’d love to sing a song with Leona Lewis – only because I think that could be realistic – or Celine Dion!

What would you say to young artists who seek to emulate your success through X Factor? Without X Factor I wouldn’t be here now. It’s a tough process; it’s not a normal process to go through. I have a lot of gratitude to the X Factor. But it was different for me as I’d been trying for twenty years; this was a last chance saloon. But young artists still need to get out there, to sing and learn their craft and get confidence that way.

How do you like festivals and performing outdoors? To be honest I’ve never been to a festival before so it’s all pretty new to me. I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve done fetes, though! (laughs)

What can audiences expect from your show at GuilFest? It’s just good music with real musicians. I’m very much looking forward to the live aspect of performing and being able to walk freely around the stage and

not be choreographed! I’ll be a fat elephant when I do, but that’s okay!

Have you made any plans for a second album yet? Well I’ve still got a record in the charts at the moment so I don’t want to run before I can walk. The next one’s going to be a bit more personal with some original songs, but I just want to enjoy what I’m doing at the minute. We’ll see what happens after the tour…

Finally, our TG2 Pop Quiz: First record you bought and the last record you bought? I think it was ‘I just called to say I love you’ by Stevie Wonder or ‘When the going gets tough’ by Billie Ocean. I had them on vinyl and was very proud. The last record I bought was Michael Bolton’s album - because I’m on it!

WHERE TO EAT: The Richard Onslow, Cranleigh

by Rich Lee Richard Onslow 113 - 117 High St Cranleigh Village, Surrey, GU6 8AU Tel: 01483 274922 www.therichardonslow.co.uk

I

f the Richard Onslow pub in Cranleigh has been quietly redefining itself over the years to become the fine, friendly, olde/ modern establishment it is now, it’s with the arrival this year of new Head Chef Kevin Webb that this transformation finally seems complete. A local lad who made his bones at some seriously highend restaurants in London before returning to his Surrey roots, with Kevin settled into the kitchen, the Richard Onslow pub can now boast of a menu as inviting as its dining room. A smart, cosy, soft-lit, greenpanelled space, the dining room has a touch of the old fashioned tea room about it which really suits the location. Presenting the menus and the specials board, the front of house team evidently know their new spring menu and specials inside out and are proud of them too. A good sign. To start with, a humble dish of panfried mackerel on grilled sourdough turned out to be something rather more special: the salad it came with was flecked with pearly pink strands of rhubarb. Poaching the fruit was a canny move here – the natural sharpness replaced by a softer, mellower flavour that floated above the stronger flavour of the fish. Seasonal but not the sake of it; this was a smart, simple and delicious dish to kick things off with.

--------------------------

Main course brought a juicy pork fillet cooked to a cheeky blush with curls of crispy crackling to give the teeth a good workout; it was a fine display of how to treat simple, traditional ingredients with more care and less fuss. Where there’s pork, there’s usually apple and so a thyme and apple puree brought a fruity/herby hit while buttery soft fondant potato and silky braised leeks offered sides of vegetables with more luxury than most veg are used to.

Line Caught Mackerel, grilled sourdough and poached rhubarb

Ever had a rice pudding fritter? Nope, neither had I. But what might have been a bowl of overpriced comfort stodge in other establishments was a much classier affair here: a neat golden square with a lightly crisp fried crust holding together creamy rice - cooked to just a bite. The whole thing gave off a happy aroma of jam doughnut, although the fruity syrup the fritter sat in was infused with just enough star anise and other exoticness to make this kid’s classic one for the grownups.

--------------------------

Across the table another dessert, an artfully plated Valrhona chocolate millionaire’s shortbread, was one more sign that the chef likes his desserts decadent with more than a pinch of nostalgia thrown in. Shamefully rich, you could easily build a wall with the deliciously thick, dark ganache.

£5.50 Double baked Souffle & spring onion salad £6.50 -------------------------Pan Fried Salmon Pave, wild mushrooms, pea shoot salad £15.50 Pork Fillet, Braised Leeks, Fondant Potato, Apple Purée & Thyme Sauce £16.50

Valrhona Chocolate Millionaires Shortbread & Jude’s Salted Caramel Ice Cream £6.00 Rice Pudding Fritter & Spiced Berry Compote £5.50 -------------------------Food Total = £55.50

As a country pub, the Richard Onslow already ticks all the boxes, but as a restaurant it’s clear that Kevin Webb is a chef champing at the bit to bring a little fine-dining flair to hearty, cheery pub food. And that can only be a good thing. Fortunately, the fine dining prices have stayed in the city which means that dining at the Richard Onslow is as good value as it is a refreshing experience of what pub food can be.

Do not add the grilling grate until you are ready to cook the food. • Add lighter fluid or fire lighters to the charcoal briquettes. • Light the charcoal. Using a long match or a long lighter, light the charcoal briquettes in the grill. You are ready for charcoal grilling when they are mostly covered in ash and glow red. In general, this should take 20 minutes for the charcoal briquettes to be hot enough for charcoal grilling. • Spread the charcoal out on the bottom of the grill according to the type of food you are cooking. By spreading out the charcoal you will get your food to cook evenly. Use tongs to spread the charcoal. • Replace the grilling grate. • Cook your food. The exact steps to cook the food will depend on what you are cooking. • Enjoy.

Recipes: BBQ STYLE

2 poussin, spatchcocked

1 tbsp grated lemon rind

3 tbsp lemon juice

3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

4 cloves garlic, crushed

1 tbsp cracked black peppercorns

1/2 tsp salt

TEXAS BBQ DRY RUB

Method

BBQ LEMON AND PEPPER POUSSIN Ingredients

34

1

Firstly, to spatchcock the chicken, put the poussin breast side down on a chopping board and, using a pair of sturdy scissors, cut down one side of the backbone, starting at the neck end of the bird. Cut down the other side of the backbone to completely remove it from the bird.

2

In a large bowl or shallow dish, whisk lemon rind, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, peppercorns and salt. Place the poussin in a bowl and cover with the marinade; cover and refrigerate for 4 hours.

3

Place on the preheated barbecue for 30 minutes, turning frequently. Take extra care that they are cooked evenly. Check that the poussin is cooked by piercing the thickest part of the thigh with a skewer. The bird is cooked when the juices run clear and there is no pink meat. Allow to stand for 10 minutes in a warm place before serving.

4

Serve with salad and potatoes of your choice.

BBQ BAKED PIZZA Ideally you will be using a BBQ pizza stone like the Weber one featured in this article. However if you do not have one you can place your pizza onto a well-oiled piece of tinfoil instead.

Method

Ingredients •

1kg of white bread flour

1tsp fine sea salt

2 x 7g packet of dried yeast

1tbsp of caster sugar

4tbsp olive oil

650ml lukewarm water

• •

2 x 400g jars of pre–made tomato and garlic sauce Two fresh buffalo mozzarella Handful of fresh basil

1

Sieve the flour and salt onto your work surface and make a well in the middle of the flour. Mix the yeast, olive oil, sugar and water in a bowl or jug. Leave to stand for a few minutes then pour into the flour. Carefully mix the flour into the liquid using a fork then start using your hands to knead the flour into a smooth, springy dough – about 10 minutes.

2Put the dough into a well-floured bowl and cover with a damp

cloth. Place in a warm room ideally an airing cupboard for about an hour until the dough has doubled in size. 3Remove the dough to a well-floured work surface and knead

it to push the air out. Then divide into either 6 or eight pieces depending on the size of pizza you would like. 4

Manipulate the dough using your hands into the size of pizza base you would like. You can use a rolling pin if you prefer. Place onto a well-oiled baking sheet to put on your toppings.

5You will need around 2–3 tbsp of tomato sauce per pizza but

really it is down to personal preference. Use a spoon to spread the sauce evenly over the pizza. 6Tear pieces of mozzarella and scatter over the pizza along with

the basil leaves. Add any other toppings you would like. 7

Finally place your pizza onto the BBQ on the pre heated pizza stone and then cover the BBQ. Check your pizza after 4 minutes. Normally your pizza will take around 8 minutes to cook.

Thirsty Business:

M

eet Bill King and Richard Peters - two friends who have created a little company with big ambitions…

T

he common view of the microbrewery can often conjure images of a small company run by sandal-wearing CAMRA bores – but the Firebird Brewing Company, located in Rudgwick on the Surrey/West Sussex border, are anything but. Embracing a global philosophy and boasting a fantastic headquarters that’s home to an incredible array of beers, this is a brewery to be championed… The history of Firebird is remarkable in itself. Owners Bill and Richard met 30 years ago at University. Richard then worked at Courage for years afterwards, and Bill is in fact a fifth generation brewer. Having lost touch, they reconnected after 20 years… on LinkedIn. “We went for a beer, and had a catch-up –and it was great to be able to compare notes and realise that we would both like to do it again” explains Richard. “Before we knew it, we had built up a business plan – and then we had to explain to our wives that we were going to invest pensionharming sums of money into it…” The wheels were set in motion and the speed with which Firebird then materialised is remarkable. “There was nothing here at the end of 2012, but we moved into the brickwork the following June” says Richard as we overlook the truly impressive headquarters the equipment here was sourced globally, from China to the Czech Republic. “On the 31st July 2013 our first batch had been brewed.” However, with a thousand craft breweries in the UK, what makes Firebird different? Well, much like the machinery used to make it, they offer a truly global beer variety. The foray into creating Czech pilsner and German weissbier is a hugely ambitious and popular – choice; and there is

much more to come. They haven’t left tradition behind though: “The Heritage XX is based on a recipe my great-great grandfather created” says Bill, which rather encapsulates Firebird as a whole a truly 21st century approach to a traditional craft. As such a new yet ambitious company, what does the future hold for Firebird? “We want the local area to see us as their brewery,” Richard explains, “we do want to make a sustainable business, but there are no barriers.

We have plenty of ambition - we’d like to go nationwide and export. But this will only grow if we keep making beer that people enjoy”. “One day, we’ll make a mistake” Bill adds, “but we haven’t made one yet…” Visit firebirdbrewing.co.uk or call 01403 823180 to find out more, or discuss brewery tours. Firebird can be bought at The Three Crowns in Wisborough Green and The Richard Onslow in Cranleigh.

J

une is the perfect time to freshen up and indulge in a little self-renewal in preparation for those long anticipated summer months... And what better way to start than by paying your skin some attention? We often hear health gurus praising the glorious apple. Its rich content of minerals and Vitamin A and C make

by Wizzi Seaton

it one of the best health foods we in the UK can proudly say we grow. But did you know that the nutrients found in apples, particularly green apples, can be utilized to help revive and nourish your skin? The Malic acid in apples is a natural alphahydroxy. Used in many cosmetic products, alpha-hydroxy acid can help brighten the skin and reduce the signs of ageing.

Make Your Own… Apple Tone & Soothe Facial Mask You can make this mask in minutes and use once a week to give your skin a restorative treat. INGREDIENTS Two green apples granny smiths work well Three tablespoons of 100% natural wheat germ powder

METHOD An hour before you want to use the mask, chop the apples up and reduce them to a smooth pulp using a blender. Add the wheat germ powder and one tablespoon of the coconut oil and blend thoroughly. Place the mixture in the fridge (with a label so no one tries to eat it!) and leave to cool for roughly an hour. Once cooled apply a thick layer of the mixture to clean, dry skin. You may need to lie down and get someone to help you with this as the mask won’t be very sticky at this stage. Lie still and after a few minutes the mask should set. You can sit up at this point if you want to but don’t go walking around unless you want to leave an apple-y, coconut scented trail behind you.

Two tablespoons of pure coconut oil

Leave the mask on for about 20 minutes and, for an internal dose of apple magic, why not drink some apple juice (NOT from concentrate) while you wait?

You can get the wheat germ and coconut oil from Holland and Barrett.

Gently wipe the mixture off with a cold, damp cotton wool pad and follow by gently massaging the leftover tablespoon of coconut oil into your face and neck.

Voila! Your skin should feel restored, soothed and renewed. That’s the face taken care of. To soothe and tone the rest of your skin turn to the wonders of the almond with…

P

art of their new Armande (almond to us) range this ultra dry formula combines almond oil with a silicium derivative to help nourish, smooth and firm the skin, helping create a visibly more toned body. Can’t argue with that!

Wafting out of a bright, open shop front on Guildford High Street is the unmistakable scent of globally renowned skincare brand Liz Earle.

L

iz Earle’s shining reputation for premium quality cosmetics continues to grow with their Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser having just received its 100th award, making it the most awarded cleanser in the UK. As well as selling their usual lotions and potions, the Guildford store offer three treatments, all carried out in the serene treatment room at the back of the shop. The Relaxing Back Massage and Healthy Beautiful Skin Facial are popular but we decided to try out the favourite: The Liz Earle Signature Facial. Before the steaming, massaging and gadgetry led dirt extraction (this is a rather high tech treatment) could commence, beauty therapist Lydia asked me about my skin routine. I gave a short, rather shameful reply and told Lydia I thought my skin probably fell into the ‘combination’ category. Sensing my naïve approach to skincare, (what happened to good ol’ soap and water, eh?) Lydia assured me that I’d be leaving the treatment room enlightened. After being taken through the processes involved I settled myself under the soft duvet and closed my eyes. The facial uses traditional hands-on, non-invasive techniques including steaming, manual extraction, antibacterial high frequency and vacuum suction, working with the lymphatic system to aid absorption of the products. While a facial steam helped open

the pores, Lydia massaged my arms and hands. Then, turning to some of Liz Earle’s best-loved products, she deeply cleansed and exfoliated my skin whilst massaging my face, neck and shoulders. Remaining conscious while surrounded by the soothing scent of Mandarin oil and peaceful background music proved a challenge and I found myself happily dozing off as I breathed deeply under Lydia’s direction. After coaxing out any blackheads a facemask was applied for the final stage of the treatment, during which I had the choice of a shoulder, scalp or foot massage. I went for the feet and before I knew it my 90 minutes of pampering bliss were over. After emerging refreshed and relaxed with a layer of radiant, baby soft skin on show Lydia talked me through caring for my renewed epidermis. For daily care she prescribed Liz Earle’s hero Cleanse & Polish product, a toner and a moisturiser for normal to combination skin, a deep cleansing mask and exfoliator to use once a week and an eye repair cream. She also suggested I drink peppermint or nettle tea daily for an internal antioxidant boost. A few days on and having heeded Lydia’s skincare advice my skin has maintained the radiance I left the treatment room with. A fantastic renewal treatment. Pop into 72-74 High Street to ask more about the treatments Liz Earle offer or call 01483 400760 to book.

RACE INFO:

T

he Raft Race in Guildford is back again this year. This integral part of the Guildford Festival is celebrating its 38th birthday so we say if you haven’t already, this is the year for you to get involved. Each year there’s a theme for the decoration of your homemade rafts and this year’s theme is Nursery Rhymes! Guildford Lions want you to be colourful, entertaining and exciting in your designs as there will be prizes awarded for ‘Best Presented', 'General', 'Youth Rafts’ as well as ‘Best Designed Raft’.

So, about the race itself: Well, the action kicks off at Millmead and continues down the river to the finish at The Waterside Centre. Teams should consist of 4 people at least and no more than 8. The fee to enter your homemade speed-machine is only £20 but the organisers do expect teams to put that little bit of effort into getting sponsorship and trying to raise at least £100 per raft.

RAFTING POINTS TO REMEMBER

BUILDING A RAFT

Make sure everyone on your team can swim

Make sure you dress in the most silly fashion you can muster

W

Don’t drink the water

Remember to make/take paddles

Towels are a good idea too

We’d recommend some form of wheat/barley/ hops derivative beverage before you take to the water, just to clear the mind you know

People will throw eggs at you, don’t take it personally

Remember, you are not a salmon

e are by no means experts at this but a quick phone call to a chap in something called “Boat Troop” in Credenhill gave us some simple ideas for you to go with so here goes…

You will need: •

Six old plastic drums or oil drums (if they were used for oil make sure they’re COMPLETELY clean of any residue as fish and wildlife don’t dig oil)

4 lengths of wood

A shed load of rope

Put it together a la picture below and good luck, you’ll need it.

ALL BIKED UP AND READY TO GO by Joe Payne

Those of you in the vicinity of the gorgeous Surrey Hills may have noticed that many areas are regularly descended upon by hundreds of mountain bikers. One of the key companies involved in this explosion of interest is All Biked Up – and founder Richard Kelly thinks it’s a great thing…

TRAIN TO WIN (OR GET BETTER)

A

ll Biked Up was first established to offer guidance to the growing numbers of mountain bikers. It quickly became apparent that many visitors not only needed help to find the trails but also to hone their skills. Now Richard and his team are working seven days a week to help mountain bikers across the Surrey Hills. “It’s gone from probably seeing ten other riders out for a three hour ride on a Sunday morning to there being two to three thousand riders, depending on where you go,” says Richard.

TRAIL BLAZERS

N

ot only that, but All Biked Up have been actively involved in both the building of purposebuilt trails and maintaining the relationship between bikers and landowners. “We’ve just completed the Summer Lightning trail, which runs from Leith Hill Tower and is the only waymarked trail on the Surrey Hills – which has taken a long time to get done! But through changing hearts and minds we’ve managed to get the permission and funding to build it.”

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Sport

SPOKES OF COMMUNITY SPIRIT

S

o how have Richard and his peers managed the impact made by the mountain biking community they’ve helped foster? “It’s part of a changing rural economy – previously local people might have worked on the land or on farms, but that industry isn’t necessarily there for them,” he explains. “In terms of sustainable rural economies, leisure and tourism is a big bonus for the local people. It’s taken a while for some to understand this, but now locally there are areas for ‘glamping’, there are bike shops, and companies such as All Biked Up – not to mention the local pubs that enjoy large groups of bikers, week in week out!”

WHERE’S GOOD TO GO?

I

t would appear that outdoor pursuits can have a positive effect on areas such as the Surrey Hills. Indeed, the area is one of the most popular in the country for the mountain bikers – so where are the best natural areas to ride? “Areas of Holmbury are good for newer riders, as it’s less steep – heading east or west is technically more difficult. From Winterfold towards the Willinghurst Estate there are steeper jumps of up to 30 feet. Other areas of Leith Hill and Redlands Wood boast a lot of non-sanctioned trails too,” Richards says.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED…

S

o are you interested in joining this ever-growing, active outdoor pursuit? If so then you’ll need kit – but perhaps not as much as you might think. “You need an off-road specific bike, and it needn’t be hugely expensive – it just needs working gears and working brakes, with tyres suitable for off-road use.” Anything else? “Definitely a helmet, and gloves as if you do crash you’ll stick your hands out. Some people strap on a ton of body armour, but you don’t really need it – unless you’re intending to crash a lot…” Visit www.allbikedup.com to find out more…

ousehold names such as Pele, Ronaldinho, Marta and Lionel Messi grew up learning futsal – we’re not saying you’ll quite hit their heights, but it’s a fantastic sport to get involved in.

The basic rules are: Futsal is a five-a-side game, played on an indoor pitch with hockey sized goals and a smaller ball. All players are free to enter the penalty area and play the ball over head-height. Games are 20 minutes per half, played to a stopping clock with time-outs permitted. The ubiquitous Surrey Sports Park (surreysportspark.co.uk) offers indoor futsal to both adults and juniors, but be sure to visit the Surrey County FA’s website (surreyfa.com/futsal) to find out more about the sport, and where to play competitively in Surrey.

ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO INVEST THE ART COLLECTOR www.ewbankauctions.co.uk

T

hose of you who watch any of the wildly disparate TV auction shows will know that there are two types of auction attendees out there: those out to collect, and those out to invest. For some, finally snaffling that antique table for the living room is the goal; for others holding onto your investment, investing in auction items can lead on to having quite the portfolio. Should you master the latter, then you could well be the next Michael Compton - arguably the first curator working in England to command international respect for his practice as a maker of exhibitions, collaborator with artists and contributor to the discourse of contemporary art.

On Friday 27th June, Ewbank’s, Surrey’s premier auctioneer of fine art and antiques, will sell The Michael Compton Collection of Post War and Contemporary Art, a group of 28 works by luminaries such as Roy Lichtenstein, Marcel Broodthaers, Terry Frost, Henry Moore, Richard Long, Victor Newsome, Keith Milow, Billy Al Bengston, Ian Stephenson, Sol LeWitt and Joe Tilson. This auction is expected to raise £200,000 – so if it’s serious investment you’re after, turn up from 7pm. If this sounds rather advanced, don’t fret – there are plenty of other auctions taking place at Ewbank’s: In June, there’s the Antique and Collectors' Auction on Wednesday 11th at 10:30am and The Summer Fine Sale including Jewellery and Silver on Wednesday 25th at 10:30am.

For more information on auctions, including lots and estimated prices, as well as upcoming auctions at Ewbank’s, visit ewbankauctions.co.uk.

MAKE MONEY HEATING YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS?

E

veryone knows that ‘going green’ is now a viable way of saving money at the same time as saving the environment. But thanks to the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), investing in renewable energy sources also means that you can make money on top of what you save through lower energy costs. The RHI is a long-term financial support programme for renewable heat where the treasury pays you a fixed amount on the heat that you produce, the type of technology used and the size of the system. That heat can come from a number of sources such as solar thermal panels, air source heat pumps, underground heat pumps and biomass boilers. As an example, let’s say you install a new biomass boiler into an average 3-bedroom house with an average spend on gas of £1004 per year. If the cost of installing the boiler is £7,500, you would receive £2501 from the RHI per year for making the switch. Your new boiler burns woodchips, not gas, saving about £102.50 per year. So over 7 years, those payments and the savings amount to £18,224.50. After the installation cost, it means an overall gain of £10,724.50. That’s a payback after 3 years and a reduced heating bill thereafter! The financial incentives are becoming ever more attractive as the technology improves, making this an ideal time to make the switch to renewable energy. Understanding the various systems and processes can, however, be something of a minefield, especially when the initial investment can be quite significant. Fortunately, Greenshop Gomshall are the local experts in sustainable living and offer a consultation and free survey to help you decide the right direction for you.

Call them on 01483 209 363, email sales@greenshopgomhall.co.uk or visit greenshopgomshall.co.uk for more information.

take notice and perhaps rethink the online currency’s potential. That may be well and good for the Bransons of the world but what of small investors? Firstly, what is bitcoin anyway? Well, it’s a digital-only currency that, unlike real-world money, doesn’t have a central bank such as the Bank of England or the Federal Reserve to control it. Regulation is, ostensibly, left to the users themselves, which might be in accordance with the currency’s enigmatic creator Satoshi Nakamoto’s (an alias) libertarian vision, but has meant that the value of bitcoins have fluctuated Does the notion of ‘virtual cryptocurrency’ seem like a dodgy wildly since it was introduced in 2009. WHAT IS BITCOIN?

D

Bitcoins are ‘mined’ by powerful computers built to crack advanced mathematical formulas that release the coins, with a limit set by its creators at 21million; therefore, the value of the bitcoins that are in circulation can only increase in accordance with the laws of supply and demand. So its proponents believe. It’s this belief in the potential growth of the value of the currency that has seen investors, large and small, buy up bitcoins in droves, although the ma jority of experts say that any windfall inherent in a portfolio of bitcoin remains remote at best. Even the executive director of the Bitcoin Foundation, Jon Matonis, admits that bitcoins are a good investment only if you can afford to lose them all, rendering them akin to lottery tickets for the hopelessly optimistic investor. Ultimately, bitcoin as a currency may well go the way of the dodo, if not the deutschmark, but the idea of online, user regulated currency might just change the game in the years to come.

LEADERS OF THE NEW RENEWABLE FUEL ORDER

W

e can, and should, all do our part in reducing our county and country’s carbon footprint (and of course, many of us do so on a daily basis) but if we’re really pro-active, then the government will reward those individuals for their efforts, earning them money for doing their bit for the environment. If an immediate, or even intermediate time scale on your return on investment is a luxury you can afford to resist, and if you’re willing, able and determined enough, then you could be among the leaders of a new renewable fuel order. Surrey University (quickly becoming educational leaders in their own right) offer a postgraduate Masters of Science in Renewable Energy Systems Engineering with modules in biomass processing technology, wind energy technology, solar energy technology and much more. So perhaps not a guaranteed investment, but if you have a viable vision for the future, and possess the initial qualifications to be accepted then you could potentially (with a cup half-full) change the world and in turn, earn a potentially hefty buck. Go change the world and lead the renewable fuel order!

HOW HYBRID I ARE YOU?

n these increasingly environmentally aware times, we cannot underestimate how much of an impact that everything we do has on our planet. Even the most mundane of tasks can leave a carbon footprint. So this is why massive automotive companies, like Lexus – the Guildford branch of which lies near TG headquarters on Slyfield Industrial Estate – are such important manufacturers. Despite their reputation as a luxury car dealership, they are in fact at the forefront of full hybrid technology. And despite what your perceptions of the Japanese car giant are, they could save you thousands… “WHY HYBRID?”

S

o why choose a hybrid over, say, a small diesel car? Well, while you may initially shell out less for such a motor, Lexus’ current range boast incredibly low co2 output, and nearly zero NOx emissions. Indeed the full hybrid technology cuts these emissions so much that they are up to ten times lower than the 2014 Euro 6 diesel standard. In short – hybrid technology is far cleaner than diesel. And what about that co2 output? Well, let’s throw a fact your way. A single 330ml can of… a very famous soft drink has a carbon footprint of 170g. Every can has emitted that much co2 in its lifetime, from creation to drinking. The most efficient Lexus CT200h – the world’s only full hybrid luxury compact car – emits 82g of co2 per kilometre. It’s an astonishing statistic, and with the same car able to achieve 74.3mpg, the annual savings of owning such a vehicle are enormous. A double whammy of good news. “QUIT SMOKING…”

…A

nd by that we mean from your exhaust. As we’ve said, it’s not just the environmental impact of owning a Lexus hybrid that is beneficial – it will save you some serious money too. The RX 450h – the world’s first fully hybrid SUV – still only emits 145g of co2 per kilometre. This will not only get you a friendly slap on the back from the (car) tax man, but over a few years you’ll save nigh on five figures in running costs over, say, another famous brand of luxury 4x4… THE VERDICT

I

f you wish to purchase a high-end, lowemission vehicle, with many perks as standard, then seriously consider a Lexus. You’ll be doing your bit for the environment with their incredibly clean technology, and save some serious dollar too…

Visit www.guildford.lexus.co.uk for more information on their range of hybrid cars. Lexus will be at The Children’s Trust Supercar Event at Dunsfold Park on the 21st - 22nd June – visit www. thechildrenstrust.org.uk for more information.

JON DIBBEN JEWELLERY We meet the renowned jewellery designer, Jon Dibben, who has been producing exquisite pieces at his shop and studio at Smithbrook Kilns for nearly 25 years…

most wonderful, creative period I can remember.” The success of Jon Dibben Jewellery since has meant he has been joined by his brother Paul and a small team of expert goldsmiths and gemmologists to help him achieve his distinctive, intricate and very beautiful designs. “We’re pretty established now but it never ceases to amaze me when people walk through the door and buy our stuff. The hardest part, for me still, is getting that initial idea and vision into a realistic, working piece of jewellery. That’s where the pain and hard work comes in: the actual craft. But you’ve got to stick with it.

“E

ven now, if I ever feel uncertain about the business, I just head to the workshop and start making things.” Not that jewellery designer Jon Dibben has much to be uncertain about. Having spent nearly 25 years creating his astonishing jewellery at his shop and studio at Smithbrook Kilns, Jon has been voted an ‘Inspiring Independent’ and ‘trend setter’ by the industry press. As a passionate advocate of Fairtrade and Fairmined gold and platinum, his debut FTFM design was recognised by the British Jewellers’ Association as a landmark piece of the past 125 years. But Jon’s future as one of the UK’s leading independent jewellers was hardly set in stone. It took a drifting, nomadic youth and a summer spent on a Greek nudist beach for Jon to realise his talents. “I could turn my hand to most things but didn’t really

know what I wanted to do. Then I went away travelling at nineteen and I came to a beach in Greece where about a thousand people lived in bamboo huts. I met really hardcore travellers there who would visit India in the winter, buy cheap stones there and sell jewellery they’d make back on the beaches in Greece.” Jon followed their example and began creating jewellery from stones and shells to earn some money to fund his travels. After more adventures around Europe and the Middle East, Jon arrived back home in Guildford and began selling pieces at market stalls, craft fairs and festivals. Then a jewellery designer friend offered him the lease on her workshop at Smithbrook Kilns near Cranleigh. “I didn’t feel ready for it; I was 23, but I took a leap of faith and took it on. I sat in the workshop terrified for a couple of months and then I just got on with making stuff. It was probably the

I asked him where his inspiration come from. “I feel connected to and inspired by nature, although I don’t feel the need to recreate it in my jewellery. But it’s in the way that nature is functional as well as beautiful that inspires me to make jewellery that is as functional as it is beautiful too.” “When I finish a piece that I’m really pleased with, I genuinely struggle to sell it. I get really attached to it.” He still gets a little misty at the recent theft of a necklace from the shop, the stones of which he had carefully collected over years. So what does he attribute his success to? “I have a really split personality. I have an entrepreneurial, ambitious side which has helped get us to where we are, but I also have a rather obsessive, perfectionist streak. Which is a useful thing to have when you make fine jewellery!”

ME

70

JUNE 2014

What do you do? My days are always full-on. I could be on the tractor, working in the office or making music. I try to make Ewhurst, where I’ve been for over 27 years, a better place and try to do things to help around here locally. But I’m a musician first and foremost, from the moment I go to bed to the moment I wake up.

‘Me’

Kenney Jones ROCK STAR DRUMMER. POLO PLAYER.

How would you have turned out if you’d never picked up the drum sticks? As soon as I think of that, I dismiss it! I believe that life is kind of pre-ordained and I really think I’ve ended up in the place I was meant to be.

LOCAL PEOPLE, EXTRAORDINARY LIVES.

You’ve been in three of the biggest British rock bands of all time. How do you feel about rock music in the UK now? There are a lot of great players out there, certainly a lot of fantastic drummers. When drum machines came along it made drummers work a little bit harder and fight for their cause. But I really like the Strypes at the moment; they remind me of us back in the Small Faces days.

As a businessman, what do you consider to be the key to success? The secret to success is to never give up. I can always see the end result: my imagination can see it finished and I won’t rest until it’s done. I’ve lost money over the years, but when it’s gone, I get out there and make some more. It’s the Eastender in me.

What attracted a boy from bombed out, post-war Stepney to the ‘king’s game’ of Polo? It’s quite bizarre isn’t it? But for me it’s the game. Not the poncy side of it, just the game; the sportsmanship of it. I used to show jump so it was inevitable that I’d take up polo. There’s a perceived idea of it being a bit la-de-da, which is a stigma that’s going away slowly but it’s a very challenging and rewarding game to play.

What’s the idea behind Rock ‘n’ Horsepower at Hurtwood Polo Club on June 14th? We started it last year when we had the opportunity to do this gig here at Hurtwood and combine it with polo, supercars and music. This year it’s in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. I was diagnosed with it last year. I’m just over three months since brachytherapy to contain it and am recovering well despite a few side effects. So, it’s about spreading the word and the best way, I believe, to raise awareness and reach out to men is through music, motors and sport. That’s what Rock ‘n’ Horsepower is all about.

K

enney Jones has been a member of the Small Faces, the Faces and the Who and has drummed with everyone from Chuck Berry to the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney. Here, the rock legend and owner of Hurtwood Polo Club in Ewhurst gives us a glimpse into his fascinating life…

How do you plan to celebrate the imminent 50th anniversary of the Small Faces? If something comes up it’ll be great, but I’m probably more excited about getting the Faces back together. We have been talking about it and the demand is definitely out there for it. But I am writing a script for an animated film of (seminal Small Faces concept album) Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake that I’ve taken to Los Angeles. It’s not a musical; it’s a fantastic story about Happiness Stan who goes in search of the other half of the moon and all the characters he meets.

Finally, what’s the best drummer joke you’ve ever heard? Ha! I’ve heard loads but can’t think of one off the top of my head. As far as funny drummers go, no one comes close to Keith Moon (the Who drummer). Keith and I were great friends. He’d take the piss out of everyone – except me. I think it was because we were fellow drummers. But if he wasn’t the centre of attention – in a pub say – he’d just pour his drink over himself to make people notice him. He was a total clown.
