Interview: HARDEEP SINGH KOHLI
you’re never that far from that immature, excitable teenager that constantly resides within....
F
Surely your kitchen skills are a major weapon in your arsenal of love?
by Rich Lee
Arsenal? We make love sound like war! Sure, it’s great to be able to cook and feed but I reckon the decisions are made long before she comes round to try my food! I’d struggle to date a vegetarian, I have to say. A love of food, the desire to embrace and celebrate food is so much part of who I am...
You moved back to your native Scotland last year. What are your views on the upcoming referendum on independence and how do you plan to vote?
ollowing a run at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the comedian, broadcaster, journalist, and chef brings his hilarious hour of stand-up to Guildford…
Hi Hardeep. Here we are, firmly in 2014. What are you looking forward to in the year ahead? It’s a big year for Scotland and for me! My first pure stand up show. No cooking, no kitchen, just me and a mic.
Aside from your current tour, what else are you working on? I have a few Radio 4 programmes to make. I do love broadcasting. I’ve just been signed up by the Huffington Post which is great. I’m still very much involved with food and food writing. I’ve just joined the team at a great gastropub in London, The Truscott Arms, where I’m doing quizzes and events and cooking food.
Author, broadcaster, comedian, journalist. Do you have a favourite? I am all about telling stories, connecting with people. However I can do that, I’m happy. If I wasn’t doing the work I am I’d be that bloke propping up the bar, boring everyone with his stories. They all have much to recommend.
Live shows are special because it’s all about the moment.
I’m very much in favour of independence. There’s a new generation of Scots, like me, who love England and the English. We will always have a very special relationship between our countries; you can’t destroy centuries of history. I just feel that the relationship will be stronger, more vibrant and better balanced if Scotland runs its own affairs. Of course I always want Scotland to beat England at any sport (highly unlikely though that may be) but as someone who has lived half my life in England l also want them to do well. This is the future. But not at all funny...
In 2006 you reached the final in the first series of BBC One’s Celebrity MasterChef. Would you Haggis or Curry? take on Celebrity Great British Haggis curry... I’ve cooked it Bakeoff? How’s your Victoria many times! Sponge? How well do you know I do enjoy the Bake Off but Guildford? I’m no baker! I love a Victoria Sponge but am fairly certain there are myriad better sponge bakers out there! In fact, there’s a chapter in my first book devoted to an incident in my childhood centred around a stolen Victoria Sponge....still many painful memories...
Your current show examines romance in middle age. Do you think age brings certain advantages when it comes to love? At 45 one has definitely lived more of life. Hopefully that makes a person more interesting, more balanced, a more rounded individual. On the other hand you can get set in your ways, unadventurous and frankly dull! As a man though,
My son is at college in Guildford so it takes on a greater significance to me. I have friends and family in the area. I’m really looking forward to the show!
What can your audience expect to see at your show? It’s very personal, perhaps a little surprising. Love and sex and romance are both beautiful and basic... Ultimately my hope is that we share an evening of familiar and new experiences...
Hardeep is performing at G Live on Friday 7th March. Tickets cost £12 and are available from glive.co.uk

NEWTON FAULKNER: by Rich Lee
R
eigate born Newton Faulkner became one of the brightest stars to emerge from Guildford’s Academy of Contemporary Music, when he released his 2007 debut album, Hand Built by Robots. With his distinctive guitar style and rich, soulful voice he has gone on to sell millions of records around the world and his four studio albums to date have all made the UK top ten. Currently on a UK tour, we caught up with Newton on the eve of his March 6th performance at G Live to find out more about the red-dreaded maestro…
Last year, you recorded your fourth album, Studio Zoo, live before an online audience via web streams direct from the studio. No one had ever done this before so what gave you the idea? It started out as wanting to stream parts of the process and it kind of just snowballed into being… 4 cameras, 5 weeks, 24 hours a day which was insane. But there were so many pluses; you couldn’t really not do it. Obviously the way I play is very visual, the way I record is very performance based, so it just made sense.
Describe some of the themes and inspirations that you explore on this album. It’s definitely darker than my previous material. I just wanted to do things that I hadn’t done before. Every album had been very different but there were certain things that were the same so I wanted to see what would happen if I changed those. I just kind of broke a whole load of my own rules to see what would happen.

ENTERTAINMENT me cello lessons at the moment. It’s really interesting; I’ve never actually bowed anything before…
Not even to pose like (Led Zeppelin guitarist) Jimmy Page? No… that’s been done. I’m looking for new things.
Since your career took off with the 2007 release of Hand Built by Robots, what have you learned about the music industry and how much has it changed since? It’s kind of changed beyond recognition. The internet thing was mildly important when I was kicking off and it was Myspace and stuff, and now it’s apparently the most important thing so it’s… very strange. Although I just do music. I like strings and guitars and interesting, musical things, so that’s what I try and focus on more than anything.
Your son, Beau, was born in 2012. What has fatherhood meant to you? Fatherhood changes everything, instantly. It’s probably the most healthy thing you can do for yourself mentally as well. It seems to just turn off all the most annoying switches that you carry around with you up to that point.
You gave an unforgettable performance at GuilFest back in 2007. With the beloved Guildford music festival set to return this year, what are your memories of GuilFest and of your time in and around Guildford? Has your current live act grown to encompass more musicians than yourself, or are you still the ‘one-man band’ that audiences are familiar with? I’ve got my brother Toby, Sam Brooks and Beth Porter on cello. It’s a very strange mixture of sounds. There’s a track where I’ve got a string section on vinyl for instance. There are loads of big, very strange toys that are used for one song, which are so massively impractical but it makes me very happy.
Is there an instrument that you can’t play but dearly wish you could? Ah, there are loads! I’d love to play f*****g everything if I could. Although Beth’s giving
I had an incredible time. ACM was a huge part of my musical makeup, because we had Eric Roche and so many amazing tutors and musicians. GuilFest I’ve been to so many times, they all seem to mould into one giant GuilFest, but I know I had a great time at all of them.
What are your plans for 2014? It’s just all gigs and festivals this year.
You hardly ever seem to take a holiday… I don’t do holidays. I can have a day off but by the end of that day I’m a bit twitchy and I feel like I need to do something. I don’t know what else I’d do! So I love it. Everything’s fine.

MARCH 2014
fter forty years in the music business, The Stranglers celebrate their ruby anniversary with a UK tour. Appearing at G Live on 12 March, we spoke to the band’s drummer and founder, Jet Black, to learn the secret behind their endless appeal and longevity…
As the ‘Guildford Stranglers’, you played your first gigs at the Star Inn on Quarry Street in 1974. Do you recall that first show? I certainly do. It was pretty disastrous (laughs). Everything went wrong that could’ve gone wrong. It wasn’t Guildford’s fault, it was our fault.
What are your thoughts on the music industry today? Well it’s just unrecognisable. It’s totally changed. The collapse of the record business and the availability of records is almost non-existent. It’s just a totally different industry. I mean, if we were starting today we wouldn’t know where to begin. We’d have no idea, it’s so alien.
Do you still get a thrill from performing and touring? Yeah, I love the gigs but, you know, all the rest of it is becoming much less attractive as you get older. But if you want to play music, you have to tour.
You have one of the most devoted fanbases of any UK band. How might you describe a typical Stranglers fan? They’re cosmopolitan. They’re all sorts really, I don’t know if there is a typical one. But if you’re talking stereotypes, they’re all there! They’re in the audience: everyone from kids up to bank managers.
How would you say your music has evolved over the years?
Didn’t you once tape a journalist to the Eiffel Tower and leave him there?
It’s got more sophisticated. We were a one-style band that started off doing aggressive music. We still do aggressive music but that’s not all we do now. It’s expanded; we’ve experimented with all kinds of music and tried to make it our own. So I suppose it’s become more eclectic, more diverse.
Yeah, that’s true…
You were identified with the early punk movement even though the same scene often rejected you. Did you ever feel there was a music genre that you truly belonged to?
What did he say? Well he was just totally dismissive of what we did…
What would you say has been the secret to the Stranglers’ longevity? In a word: determination. You have to be determined if you want to succeed in music because it’s a very difficult thing to get established in. We just seized every opportunity we had. But if we’d been faint-hearted we’d have given up years ago.
Absolutely not, we always felt we were different. We never subscribed to any one thing. We were lumped in with the punk thing because of our name and our aggressive music at the time, but we had nothing in common. Although we never felt we had anything to do with it, the media described us that way and it was good publicity in the end.
What’s the shape of the current live act and what can audiences expect at your G Live show?
You used to have a difficult relationship with the media earlier in your career…
Will we see a Stranglers golden anniversary album and tour in another ten years?
They didn’t like us - with a few exceptions. They’d be reading the tabloid press with a preconceived notion of what we were. When they put idiot questions to us, we’d just give idiot answers.
What are you listening to?
Well with over a thousand songs it’s going to be a mixture. The one thing we were always good at was live performance and we’ve kind of perfected that. We can deliver a kind of excitement that other bands can’t emulate.
Well I’ve never been good with the old crystal ball so your guess is as good as mine. It’s possible. I may not be alive and kicking but the rest of the band may still want to play the music. The fact that so many people still like what we do and want to come and see what we do, is very satisfying.
Rosalie Carter | Press Officer at G Live, Guildford Roz works behind the scenes at G Live; corresponding with management and their artists that come to perform here in Guildford whilst ensuring happy faces all round when it comes to stage time. WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU EVER BOUGHT? Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park – I think my dad was quite happy that I got into metal rather than generic dance music. WHAT RECORD HAS HAD THE MOST SIGNIFICANCE IN YOUR LIFE? If Ever I Stray by Frank Turner. When I was doing unpaid internships and applying for every arts job under the sun, this song kept my spirits high and gave me a kick up the backside. WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT? Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Boy George and Vivaldi. One of the great things about working at G Live is being exposed to so many different types of music. I never thought I’d be into classical music but being able to hear the orchestras warm up backstage is something really special.

TOTS ABOUT TOWN The Adventures of Tintin [DVD] 2011 This box set is well worth the investment as it has all the episodes of this great cartoon tv series based on the children’s classic books.
The NCT Baby and Toddler ‘Guide to Guildford’
O
f course the name grabbed us at once. The NCT (National Childbirth Trust) has been offering support in pregnancy, birth and early parenthood since the 1960s and is the largest UK charity for parents. The Tots about Town guide is not a manual on changing nappies, controlling toddler tantrums or how to get your kids to eat their greens but it does tell you all the toddler and baby related activities available in Guildford.
Rigby, who is Tintin?
With chapters on going out, regular NCT events, child friendly places to eat, courses to take and where to keep fit during and after pregnancy, the guide is a must have for Surrey parents – There’s even a section dedicated to the dads.
Well Tintin is an exploring boy. He is a great detective and he spends his time stopping baddies all over to world.
Tots About Town is written by parents, for parents, and the third edition can be picked up for £7 from local bookshops, Guildford Tourist Information Centre and NCT events.
What makes Tintin so much fun to watch?
For further information contact: totsabouttown@nctguildford.org.uk.
It is very exciting especially because he has a dog, Snowy, who helps him on his adventures. But Snowy is quite naughty as well.
Why not take your tinys to…
What Rigby says:
Are there many baddies in the stories? There are loads and loads of baddies some of them are very odd and very, very bad. Which is your favouite episode/ story? All of them. I really like Captain Haddock and Thompson and Thompson. Captain Haddock is mad and very angry a lot of the time!

INDEPENDENT WOMEN by Wizzi Seaton
Reverend Canon Dianna Gwilliams Guildford Cathedral Dean
Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock Space Scientist Presenter of the BBC’s ‘Sky at Night’ series and pioneer for career-aspiring women, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock is a leading female scientist in a male-dominated environment. After being told as a child that her dreams of space were unreachable, Maggie made a career launching satellites, researching the hearts of stars and sharing her infectious enthusiasm for space science. Proving that anyone can achieve their dreams, regardless of gender, Maggie has been awarded an MBE for her contribution to science communication and won the Talkback Thames new talent award at the Women in Film and TV Awards in 2011.
The Queen herself approved the nomination for Dianna Gwilliams to become the fifth woman to be appointed Dean in the Church of England. After studying Physics and Chemistry at the University of California, Dianna moved to London to work as a Sound Engineer. Ordained in 1992, Dianna went on to gain an MA in Youth Ministry and Theological Education from King’s College. She also happens to have the funkiest hair in town.
What are the biggest challenges you have faced as a woman working in the Church of England? Keeping the needs of my family, myself and the needs of the people I serve in balance. Sometimes the assumptions about and expectations of my ministry have been a challenge because of my gender.
What developments would you like to see happen for women in the Church of England over the next 10 years? For women to be ordained as bishops in the church and for this to lead to a culture in which the constructs of society, which exclude some people on the basis of gender, sexuality, ethnicity and class are challenged more effectively.
Join Professor of Physics and BBC broadcaster Jim Al-Khalili on 3rd March as he talks to Maggie about her groundbreaking career in space at the University of Surrey. Rik Medlik Lecture Theatre | 3rd March | 7pm8.30pm | £4.50-£6 per ticket. Check out surrey.ac.uk/events to book
What tips would you give to young women who feel that they have a vocation to be an ordained minister in the Church of England? They should speak to their parish priest who can put them in touch with their Diocesan Dean or Adviser in Women’s Ministry. There are also excellent resources on the Church of England website, www.churchofengland.org.

W
ith International Women’s Day on the 8th March we couldn’t publish this month’s issue without flagging up some of the awesome women we have working in our community…
Fiona Knowlton Managing Director at TG Media While national newspapers tread water and the word redundancy plagues the Journalism industry, our leader Fiona has climbed the media ladder to success and is paving the way for a new wave of regional media. After working for the Surrey Advertiser and Guardian Media Group, Fiona saw a gap in the market for a hyper-local, yet national quality, publication. She created The Good Time Guide, The Guide 2 Surrey and the Guide 2 Guildford under the umbrella of TG Media.
What are the biggest challenges you have faced as a woman working in your industry? I don’t think it’s an industry that is particularly biased when it comes to gender, which is probably why I’ve been able to climb quickly. When I worked for the Guardian Media Group and the Surrey Advertiser some of the most senior members were women, which probably created an expectation in me of what’s possible.
What developments would you like to see happen for women in your industry over the next 10 years?
Dominique Fraser The Boileroom Music Venue Owner Boileroom music venue proprietor Dom is one of Guildford’s leading figures in the music industry. After studying, Dom freelanced for various radio stations and became creative and live music editor of music fanzine, SPILL. Dom has been promoting shows for nearly 15 years. Feeling Guildford was missing a dedicated live music venue; she opened The Boileroom in 2006. As well as running the venue, Dom lectures in Event Management, freelances as a Tour Manager and continues to write for various music publications.
What are the biggest challenges you have faced as a woman working in the music industry? As a woman you have to shout a little louder to be heard above the low rumble of all the men! People often assume I’m just someone's girlfriend and they tend to be surprised when they find out I’m running the show.
More varied roles and more women at the top. You get lots of good female journalists but seeing those women progress, possibly while they have children and families, is what we need to see.
What developments would you like to see happen for women in your industry over the next 10 years?
What tips would you give to young women who aspire to reach your career achievements?
What tips would you give to young women who aspire to reach your career achievements?
Imagine there are no obstacles. Obstacles are often of our own making. The expectation has also got to be for greatness.
Have high expectations for yourself and don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something.
More lady sound engineers please. More female techs and just generally more of us!

Phyllis Tuckwell: A DOCTOR’S STORY by Rich Lee
I
n February, TG2 Guildford spoke with Susan Swayne, a patient at the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham, to learn about her experiences with a lifelimiting illness and of her treatment at the celebrated hospice. This month we got to speak to Dr Nick Dando, a consultant specialist in palliative medicine at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice and Frimley Park Hospital… we’re dealing with people at a very difficult time of their lives. They’re facing a great deal of uncertainty. And it’s not just about the patients; it’s about the family as well. That’s where the teamwork is so important, to share the responsibility of caring for that patient and their family.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
Hi Dr Nick… So what is palliative medicine? What palliative medicine is really about is the very detailed and expert assessment of symptoms, alleviating pain, suffering and distress for patients. As a doctor I’m predominantly concerned with complex pain control and complex symptom management. Palliative medicine is a relatively new specialty. It’s really only been around for about thirty years. It grew out of the visionary work of Dame Cicely Saunders; a really inspirational figure who led the modern hospice movement.
What drew you to this particular field of medicine? As a junior doctor, I took a cancer job at Southampton General Hospital and was inspired by the palliative team there; in the quality of care they were delivering to those patients. I was impressed with the time they had and with the communication skills they used to talk to patients
at a really challenging time in their lives. And it’s clinically interesting and challenging work. Everybody’s an individual and drugs and symptoms all interact differently, so to have an understanding and to ultimately improve the quality of life for those patients is really very rewarding.
How did you get involved with Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice? I was lucky enough to be allocated a rotation here. I did one year here over 2009 and 2010 as a registrar, so I got to work with the team here and got to know the Hospice. Now, my job is split with Frimley Park Hospital and Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, which is really good for patients as I can follow them through their different environments. This can be a challenging new environment for a patient if they’ve not been here, so to see a familiar face is helpful for them.
What do you find most challenging about the job? Anyone working in palliative care would recognise that
I really enjoy the quality of care that we are able to deliver here. Being able to control complex pain or manage distressing symptoms for a patient and to see the difference to their quality of life, is really rewarding. It’s a very inspirational environment. It’s a really fantastic hospice to work at with a great culture of collaborative working. And of course, in the voluntary environment, the volunteers are essential. They really help us deliver that little bit extra. They are are able to sit with the patients to help support them while we focus on the clinical side.
Do people have pre-conceived ideas about hospices? I suppose there’s a stigma attached to a hospice; that you go there for the last few days of life. People think about the hospice and the inpatient beds, but 75% of the vital care we deliver happens outside the hospice. Of course some people do choose to die here and we’re delighted to provide that care for them. But there’s a lot more that we do.

‘MAKE YOUR MARK’ and save our CATHEDRAL!
B
etween 1952 and 1961 more than 200,000 ordinary people bought a brick and inscribed it with their name before they were added to the Cathedral walls. The bricks were made from clay taken from Stagg Hill, where the Cathedral stands, and still make up a large portion of the building today. Even good ole Queen Liz bought one, and it’s for this reason that many today still feel a personal connection with the building. Now the Cathedral needs the public’s help again. The ‘Make Your Mark’ Appeal has been devised to raise the £7m needed to save the Cathedral from corporate hogs and carry out urgent repairs. Unlike many of the UK’s ancient cathedrals, Guildford does not possess a significant financial endowment. If we can raise £1.3million by August 2014 the Cathedral will be eligible to apply for the Heritage Lottery Fund, which could then earn them a grant of £4.5million. With this grant the asbestos that still exists in the rafters can be removed and the way the Cathedral is used can move forward to accommodate future generations and the demands of the 21st Century.
Over the next few months the Cathedral are holding a number of events for the public to enjoy and are reaching out to anyone who might be able to donate and/or organise a fundraising event themselves. 22nd March – HEAR MY PRAYER CONCERT Guildford Cathedral Choir is one of the UK’s more recent choral foundations but has already accomplished an excellent international reputation. Their most recent CD, ‘All Bells in Paradise’, received mention in Gramophone as one of the top ten Christmas-themed recordings of 2013. The concert is free and comprises some of the most beautiful music for the season of Lent, beginning with Henry Purcell’s ‘Hear my Prayer’.
26th April – FUNDRAISING ABSEIL Climb the 249 steps to the top of the Cathedral and enjoy the stunning panoramic view before gracefully descending to the ground. Participants are asked to try and raise at least £1,000 to take part. Our own Stuart Alexander has already done it and says it is a quite an experience and the Cathedral Dean, Dianna Gwilliams will be taking on the challenge herself.
17th May – APPEAL DINNER IN THE NAVE The big one. The Appeal dinner is the main fundraising event of the appeal. High-class dining, entertainment, including speaker Michael Portillo, and exclusive auction prizes will make this an evening to remember. The event is the perfect networking opportunity for companies and businesses and there will be a display area where guests can provide literature to promote their company to other guests. OUR HISTORY: The Duke of Hazard ...A POTTED HISTORY OF WHERE WE LIVE AND WHO LIVED HERE We may be a county steeped in royal history but you may or may not know that we’ve only ever been blessed with one Duke. And he is, to say the least, no more. You see, the thing is that our first and only Duke of Surrey’s life went the way of the pear so quickly that it appears no one’s been up for the job since.
by Will Knowlton
M
eet Thomas Holland (1374-1400). Tom’s dad was the 2nd Earl of Kent. Having been raised in minor nobility he knew his way around court well and in 1397 he was summoned by Richard II (not of car park grave fame, that’s number 3) for a confab about a little problem old Dickie was having with a particular subject. It appears that Tom’s uncle was being a pain in the braies and the King thought Tom was the best person to take care of this little matter. So Ricardo charged Thomas with the job of arresting his own uncle for the crime of treason. Familial piety not withstanding, Tom carried out the task like the efficient little b*****d he was and Richard rewarded him by making him Duke of Surrey. The upshot of this was Tom got a shed load of land, rich land at that. Now, as we now know Richard was a bit of a prat and the way he dealt with people - what with his mercurial moods, vacillating arrests and speedy executions - meant that his subjects started to hate him. A lot. The long and short of it was that he finally pushed everyone too far and his cousin (they liked to keep it in the family then didn’t they?) Henry Bolingbroke locked him in the Tower (standard) and crowned himself King Henry IV. The new boy got straight in touch with Thomas and revoked everything that Richard had given him; title, estates, cash, the broads: everything. To be fair to Henry, he did let the former Duke keep the lands that were already his before he did over his Uncle. Which was nice. Thomas, who until recently was bathed in mead, women and the good life took a little umbrage and his resulting tantrum bore fruit in the form of a rebellion. What happens next could have come straight out of an episode of Game of Thrones. The rebellion was called for (what like a cab or something?) in January of 1400 at Kingston in Surrey (good pubs and shopping dictating the venue no doubt). Henry was a guy who was all business and got the message out to gather an army while he taunted the rebel scum from the walls of London. The approaching army made the rebels scatter (“it’s a trap!”) as they couldn’t repel knights of that magnitude. Thomas did what any medieval upstart did: ran like greased weasel poo. After being in exile for a while he made it to Cirencester (that’s North of Merrow if you live in Guildford). He got busted there by some mates of Henry, threw a dummy and headed for an Abbey where he could lay low. Too late, they got him and dragged him to the town square and not for a chat either. What he got was probably a totally fair, justified and well run trial, where all opinions and defences were heard followed by that stalwart of medieval family days out: a beheading with an axe.

WHERE TO EAT:
Pie Night at the Keystone, Guildford by Rich Lee
The Keystone
T
he fortunes of the Keystone, at the foot of Guildford High Street, seem to have risen and fallen in recent years as much as the River Wey has in the last few months. Never less than a cheery place, with a reputation for great food and ales that stretches back years, the pub has arguably suffered from an image problem, a lack of identity that served to confuse an otherwise loyal clientele, if not attracting a new one. The Keystone that we arrived at, however, revealed nothing less than an astonishing return to form from the beloved pub, its corners and crannies filled with smiling punters, a happy clamour rolling out the door proclaiming a pub that’s finally got its groove back. And that can be largely attributed to the Keystone’s energetic new manager, Rich Jaehme. The Bristolian only arrived at the Keystone last Boxing Day but fell in love with the place from the start. “Guildford felt like home, instantly,” Rich told us, during a quick break from
running the kitchen. “I’m so lucky. I’ve inherited cracking staff, a brilliant chef and great customers.” Under Rich’s enthusiastic new leadership, the Keystone has clearly found a renewed focus, with one eye on the kind of place it wants to be and the other on those things that already made it great. Hence the now more popular than ever Pie Night (every Thursday) and the reason we came to the Keystone, to experience it for ourselves. Back in 2009, the pub won the British Pie Week award for their legendary Game Pie, and have continued to serve outstanding pies since the previous owners moved on. “But we’ve tweaked the fillings a bit since,” said Rich, “and got the pastry just right so now they’re better than ever! Pies are a classic British dish. They’re also a social thing as well,” he said motioning towards tables of diners bantering merrily while sharing from deep pies and bowls of towering sides dishes. “We sell between 60 and 100 pies every Thursday
night,” Rich buzzed. “They just fly out.” ‘Generous’. That’s the word that comes to mind when you’re served a Keystone pie. We chose a lamb and stilton and a chicken, ham and leek pie, and received plates that nearly spilled over with huge hunks of succulent meat, rich sauce and topped with thick wedges of crisp pastry, the texture of shortbread and the homey taste of heaven. We added chunky roasted veg, darkgolden sweet potato wedges, salty/sweet red cabbage and bacon and mashed potato as epic as its name, for a feast that was as delicious as it was hearty. When you figure that each pie only costs a fiver on Pie Night, with sides for a miniscule £1.50 each, generous really is the only word. As the Keystone continues to celebrate what makes British pub food great, refining the menu as they go, Rich is a fountain of ideas for pushing the pub forward. Already boasting the bohemian vibe of his Bristol pub roots – just ogle the artfully

daubed doors that hang along one wall – Rich is revamping the entertainment schedule to include open-mic nights, Jazz brunches and stimulating evenings with renowned explorers and scientists. Frankly, the Keystone could host nothing more than a tiddlywink tournament every Thursday; so long as they keep serving their famous pies, the hungry punters are sure to keep coming back.

Every month we interview a landlord, to give you an insight into a publican’s life in Surrey…
THE LANDLORD & LANDLADY
Graham & Sarah Firth The Three Lions, 55 Meadrow, Farncombe. How long have you been in the pub industry? 3 weeks! It’s been really good, brilliant in fact. The opening of the pub has been really well received by the locals. We’ve got live music back at the pub and we’re also doing food so I think we’re attracting groups of people who might not have necessarily been here for a while, coming back to the pub. What makes your pub different from the rest? We’re offering a mixture of everything and we’re trying to appeal to all sorts. We want to be a community pub. It’s a great place for families to come and enjoy a meal during the day and then as the families drift off, people come in for the music (Friday & Saturday nights). We want to be open to suggestions and we’re listening to what people want, which hopefully we can give them! In-house recommendations at the Three Lions? Food wise the roasts are brilliant. Drinks wise the Spitfire (ale) and Whitstable Bay Pale Ale go down well. We also serve Oranjeboom beer, which can’t be found in too many places and it’s proving to be really popular. Favourite tipple? Graham: It’s a Spitfire Ale for me Sarah: It’s got to be a Sauvignon Blanc Gastro pubs or traditional taverns? (in-unison) Traditional taverns! Friday nights or Sunday afternoons? Sarah: It’s got to be Sunday afternoons Graham: Mine’s a Friday night because we’ve got live music on! Favourite pub in the local area? The Sun Inn, Godalming. If you were a drink what would you be? Sarah: I’d be a glass of Champagne Graham: I’d be a nice fruity bitter! For more info and details of live music visit www.thethreelionsfarncombe.co.uk

FORMING A HABIT...
THE 21 DAY CHALLENGE by Wizzi Seaton
A
ristotle once said, ‘We are what we repeatedly do.’ I think what he meant by that is that our habits form part of who we are. But what if your habits aren’t all that good? Eat right and exercise. Sounds simple enough. But when you’ve spent a semi-life-time dodging these health nut habits it can be difficult to suddenly change pace. If you’ve ever tried to give or take anything up you are probably familiar with the proud feeling you get at the end of week one. You may be even more familiar with the sinking
sensation half way through week two, head in hands crying ‘what happened? It was all going so well.’ Many health gurus, self-help books and lifestyle coaches will tell you that if you make it through 21-days you’re there. The habit has been formed and that clever organ between your ears will instinctually drive you to continue. Although scientists are often in debate over this figure, we thought that, as the most commonly accepted number, we’d test it. And yes you’ve guessed it. Our staff have once again acted as guinea pigs to put this theory to the test.
NATALIE HEATH’S RAW FOOD DIET CANDIDATE: Fiona
F
or my habit-changing challenge I was inspired by Raw Lifestyle Coach, Natalie Heath, to find out what effects a raw food diet would have on my health and well-being.
After 7 Days Diet: Muesli and green juices (apples, pears, celery, kale, ginger, cucumber, lime and spirulina) for breakfast. Salads for lunch (loved the kale salad!) and a variety of filling raw soups for dinner. Herbal teas and smoothies for snacks. I felt amazing this first week, full of energy! All the recipes have been delicious.
After 14 Days Diet: Banana, cocoa and hemp seed smoothies, Pad Thai salads, falafels and the odd indulgence of raw chocolate brownies, carrot cake and coconut cookies. Still feeling the benefits, but after one little slip up in a
Digby-Jones – Photographer
restaurant I really noticed how different I felt after eating cooked food compared to raw.
After 21 days Diet: More green juices and muesli, home made granola bars for snacks, Christmas tree salads (chard, pecans, pomegranate, Satsuma’s, spinach and frozen grapes with apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, coriander, turmeric and cayenne pepper dressing). After a weekend of unavoidable social eating (I am ashamed) 1lb crept back on. I felt a lot better than I would normally have after a boozy night and wanted to get back to my raw food ASAP.
How has it been overall? I must confess to the odd cooked meal; one occasion involved a Chinese takeaway. I’m not a frequent eater of takeaways and after
my encounter with this particular one, I’m in no hurry to order one again. I experienced stomach cramps and symptoms more often associated with a hangover. After such a nutritious and serene way of eating my body clearly didn’t like what I had put in it. Food for thought there I think! I now feel a massive increase in energy levels, I have a clearer mind and better skin and although I wasn’t doing this to lose weight, I dropped 5lbs and took an inch off my waist. At the start of this challenge I found making the juices and smoothies every morning a bit of a drag. A month on, though, and I’m still juicing every morning. It’s definitely become a habit. COA FITNESS & HEALTHY EATING CANDIDATE: Stuart
B
eing a type-2 diabetic my terrible eating habits were not only daft, but also dangerous. For my habit-changing challenge I went to visit the Charlotte Ord Academy, Godalming. Improving my diabolical diet began as a side-thought but after my first session with Charlotte, I realised how strong the link between food and exercise was. So we set about to improve both my diet and fitness.
After 7 Days Charlotte suggested porridge, nuts and fruit for breakfast. It sounded good; I found it impossible. Getting anything down in the morning after a lifetime of avoiding breakfast proved a real challenge. Master trainer Rob Chapman started by giving me a complete functional movement screen and assessment to analyse my weaknesses and goals. I had two 1-hour personal training

pushing 50kg on the sled. Three weeks ago I couldn’t do two!
Afterwards I felt physically drained but having managed to get some fuel into my body, I felt mentally stronger.
I felt much better but was anxious about it finishing. I’m the sort of person that needs that devil (or angel as Charlotte calls it!) on my shoulder to push me to work harder and I didn’t want to sink back into old habits.
After 14 Days It was getting easier to eat breakfast and I started grasping the concept of eating little and often. This week we focused on developing my core strength and improving the poor posture I’ve acquired from sitting at a desk all day. Having managed to eat breakfast almost every day my energy levels have rocketed.
After 21 Days Having built up my core muscles, my three personal training sessions this week were focused on building strength. I managed six runs
How do you feel now? I’m surprised by how much better I look and feel. The pushing, pulling, throwing and punching based exercises have felt like a natural way to get fit. With COA’s holistic approach I feel better psychologically and physically. I’m now eating breakfast and lunch daily and exercise regularly. It worked. TG2 Guildford would like to thank Charlotte Ord and Rob Chapman at Charlotte Ord Academy www.ordacademy.com.

1 days to embark on a habit forming journey to lose fat and build muscle was a tall order, so I knew I needed a pro. Loukas Beardwood is a rising star among Surrey’s fitness professionals and has helped hundreds of clients at the Spa Gym at Guildford’s Radisson hotel to achieve radical changes to their lifestyles and physiques. Happy to guide me on my journey to a better self, we went to work.
After 7 days Loukas prescribed a high protein/low carb diet to promote muscle repair and growth and to keep my energy levels up as well as supplements to take with every meal. Three high intensity cardio sessions in the mornings helped to keep my engine running while burning fat. For five days each week at the Spa Gym we targeted each muscle group to build strength for the workouts to follow. I enjoyed the clean diet but the early starts on the treadmill were challenging –hey, I like my sleep- and my body had to adjust to a new routine, so I did feel tired initially. But I found the workouts with Loukas invigorating and felt spurred
The Typical Diet
THE 21 DAY CHALLENGE to see how far I could push myself.
After 14 days Loukas added exercises that isolated individual muscles to the compound exercises that worked several at a time. I was lifting heavier weights than before and recovering faster. I was allowed a couple of cheat days on the food front, but with a growing appreciation for the healthier stuff, I chose to steer clear of junk. Now the diet and supplements were really working; I never felt the need to snack and I had a lot more energy.
After 21 days By now Loukas was really working me hard in the gym,
LATE AFTERNOON SNACK: (approx. 2hrs before evening gym session) Chicken (1 breast) BREAKFAST OPTIONS: sweet potato mash Venison Burger with (2 table spoons) almonds or cashews PRE WORKOUT: (30g) Whey protein shake Post workout shake MID-MORNING SNACK: EVENING MEAL: Tin of tuna Pan fried fish with boiled Apple or steamed greens LUNCH: 1HR PRIOR TO SLEEP: Chicken (2 small breasts) Total Greek yogurt with Broccoli, Kale, spinach or teaspoon of peanut Green Beans butter.
loading up on the weights while incorporating more aerobic exercises to really work on losing fat at the same time as building muscle. I’d ditched my grudge against the early morning cardio sessions and enjoyed the energy boost they gave me.
How do you feel? Brand new! Thanks to Loukas’ expert guidance and instruction, I feel stronger, trimmer and more energised than I have for years. It took some work but I think I’m now truly hooked on healthy habits. TG2 Guildford would like to thank Loukas Beardwood at www.labpt.co.uk - Telephone 07875 017 122 - and the Spa Gym at the Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel in Guildford.

his March, Surrey folk (as well as fans of moving legs one after the other rather quickly), can rejoice that the inaugural Surrey Half Marathon will take place on our fair streets. On the 9th March, runners will commence from Guildford Spectrum and heading towards the Woking Road straights and into the Woking town centre, before making a return to Guildford and to the finish line. Road closures are in place, so if you’re not keen on getting caught up in the melee of moving bodies, then do indeed cast one’s eye at the map of the route and make alternative plans. Entry to run in this inaugural Surrey Half Marathon is now closed, but we urge you, citizens of the Golden Ford and beyond, to head down to the route, pick your spot, clap your hands and cheer them on.

TOP BUY TO LET TIPS If you are contemplating making the leap into the buy to let market and becoming a landlord where do you start and what issues should you be considering? 1. Research One of the most effective ways of researching is to speak to local letting agents. They can tell you what the demand is like for rented properties, which properties are in high demand, what tenants are looking for i.e. furnished/unfurnished, and of course, how much rent you could expect. When you have found a suitable buy to let property you need to look at the buying costs and income potential (including possible void periods) very carefully before committing to the purchase.
2. Mortgage If you are arranging a mortgage it will need to be on a buy-to-let basis and if the property you are buying is leasehold you need to establish as early as possible whether the lease permits subletting because if it doesn’t you may not be able to proceed with the purchase. This can be checked by reviewing the lease.
3. Buildings Insurance You will need to notify your buildings insurance provider that you intend letting or obtain a specialist buy to let insurance policy. Failure to do this may result in any claims you make being rejected.
4. Tenant and property checks Either you or your letting agent will need to do a credit check on your incoming tenants and get references from previous landlords if possible. You should carry out a detailed inventory when the tenant checks in and when the tenant checks out. It is advisable to arrange for a professional inventory clerk to do this.
5. Regulations There are a number of regulations to comply with when letting properties. These include an obligation to register the tenants deposit with a government approved tenancy deposit scheme – see www.gov.uk/tenancydeposit-protection/overview. You should also consider regulations regarding gas electric
and furniture.
For more information or a FREE lease review to check the property you intend buying permits subletting contact Greg Barnbrook a solicitor in our landlord and tenant department on 01483 408780 or info@setfords.co.uk or visit setfords.co.uk

GUILDFORD’S GAMING GIANTS GRAB HEADLINES Media Molecule nominated for eight Games BAFTAs After February’s Oscars, the awards season continues and in March it’s the turn of the videogames industry, with the Games British Academy Games Awards. One Guildford company in particular has been nominated for a staggering 8 BAFTAS for their super-unique PlayStation Vita game, Tearaway. Media Molecule, the twisted geniuses behind Little Big Planet and Little Big Planet 2 (which won twice at the 2012 BAFTAs), are renowned for their quirky and fiendishly creative approach to games designs, making games that are both accessible and inspiring for all gamers. Their 2013 game for PS Vita, Tearaway, follows the adventures of messenger iota in a vast, vibrant and colourful paper world. Sharing categories with other heavy hitters from 2013, the Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto V, the awards take place on March 12 in London and will be hosted by comedian, Dara O’ Briain.
EA under fire for Dungeon Keeper on mobiles The world’s biggest videogames publisher, Electronic Arts, came under fire in February upon release of the Dungeon Keeper game for mobile devices. The game is a revamp of the original 1997 PC classic from another Guildford company, the now defunct Bullfrog. Dungeon Keeper is a top down strategy game where players take on the role of a demonic villain, building a fiendish lair to entrap heroic adventurers. Incorporating the ‘free-to-play’ model now common among many crossplatform games, critics blasted EA for releasing a title riddled with microtransactions, forcing players to progress by paying real money for in-game currency at every step. In the words of one reviewer: “Dungeon Keeper barely waits until the tutorial is over before making it very clear it’s free-to-play in name only.” Some speculate that this prompted EA to re-release the original PC version of Dungeon Keeper for free in the same month, on site www.gog.com.
22 Cans: “Players won't pay a penny in Godus until they're deemed ready” The original creator of Dungeon Keeper, Peter Molyneux, weighed in on the controversy in an interview with Pocketgamer.co.uk: "The free-to-play mechanic was so dominant that it obscured all the fantastic work they did. It was like a horrible odour. I wanted to play and keep on playing and keep on playing. But I just kept getting beaten up for being an impatient gamer." Currently working on upcoming ‘god-sim’ Godus with his company 22 Cans, the veteran Guildford-based developer said he plans to implement in-game transactions on the mobile version, but won’t employ the free-to-play format as it’s currently understood. "We can't be so crude in making the first thing we teach people in these games how to speed things up by spending gems. That's absolutely insane." He insists that players won't be able to pay a penny in Godus until they're deemed ‘ready’. "You've got to be subtle about it and slowly layer in those mechanics. The point we introduce monetisation depends on the player, and the game maker has to get you into the right mindset." Godus is currently available for PC as Early Access on games portal Steam and is being developed for mobile platforms for release later in the year.

MARCH 2014
‘Me’
Sean Bobbit DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY STEVE MCQUEEN COLLABORATOR REALISER OF DREAMS What do you do? I’m a director of photography. My job is to take the ideas of the film director and turn them into pictures.
You’ve worked with artist turned director Steve McQueen on the critically acclaimed Hunger, Shame and 12 Years a Slave - how did the two of you meet and form this beautiful partnership? The first feature film I ever did was Wonderland directed by Michael Winterbottom, Steve and his wife saw that film and apparently his wife said to him, “you should be working with that cinematographer”. At the time Steve was doing art installation work; he contacted me and I started shooting his installations.
As artists both in your own right, who composes the shot? The great thing about working with Steve is his level of collaboration. We’ve been together for 13 years and we’ve done a lot together…we’ve developed a working method based upon a common aesthetic. I compose the shots, I show them to Steve; if he likes it we do it and if he doesn’t like it I change it.
The repertoire of films you’ve worked on tend to have a hard hitting common theme...is this something you’re comfortable with? I’m quite choosy about the films that I work on. As the director of photography, when you commit yourself to a film you commit the whole of your life to that film and there is no space for anything else, so I want to commit myself to films that I believe in, films that are of interest to me and films that I think will be of interest to a greater audience. I don’t do it for the money, I do it because it’s my life and I love doing it.
Do the scenes that you’re filming ever have an impact on you personally? As a technician making the film, it’s broken up into little bits and it’s very hard to judge what the final emotional content of the film will be. People ask me in relation to 12 Years a Slave, was it difficult to shoot the scene when Patsy is whipped, which is a very brutal, visceral scene. Well, to successfully operate an

extended hand held shot like that gives me a great sense of achievement so I enjoyed it immensely.
In your opinion what makes the perfect shot? The perfect shot is the one that is completely unnoticed and yet is able to convey and move forward the emotion and sentiment of the story.
Are you working on any other interesting projects at the moment? I’m just about to finish off a film called Kill the Messenger starring Jeremy Renner which is quite a shocking true story which we hope will be of interest to the public.
Thoughts on G’Ford, Godalming & Cranleigh… I’ve been coming to Guildford since I was 9 years old, I’ve seen it go through good times and bad times and it is now such a remarkably vibrant, lively town… there is so much here now. The Surrey Hills are some of the most beautiful countryside in the world and I was very privileged as a child to have the freedom to roam them.
Favourite local spot to relax… I used to go to Leith Hill a lot and the surrounding area has great memories from my childhood, and that view…I never tire of it.
