ith plans for GuilFest well underway we thought we’d hit the streets and find out how people feel about the return of our favourite family festival...
Tom Rotherham | 19 | Music Student
I
’m glad it’s returning and the line-up looks good. It’s nice because there isn’t really anything going on in the rest of Guildford. It’s good it hasn’t completely died. Going? Yep. I’ll probably be playing on the KaneFM stage with my band Captain Flatcap.
Paul Tate | 43 | Cobbler
B
ig tick from me. In 20 years I’ve never been as I’m always working but it is good for Guildford and brings lots of different people into the town. I don’t even think the increased traffic matters for just a couple of days. Going? Unfortunately not. I’ve just opened my own shop so I won’t be able to take the time. I’d love to just go for an evening session but I do think the tickets could be slightly cheaper.

ood! I’m a fan of GuilFest. I’ve grown up in Guildford so it’s been a big thing every summer. Going? Yes. I live really close by and go for the atmosphere and social aspect. The music is always good.

P
ersonally I think it’s a good thing for Guildford. Lots of people come here for it. They have quite a lot of older bands and it’s a good social event.
Alyssa Sykes | 18 | Gap Year
I
’m not really bothered. I used to go when I was younger but I think it’s targeted more towards families. I do think it ruins the park which is a shame.
Going? I might go for the Boomtown Rats. I think it goes through fazes of appealing to different age groups.
Going? No. It’s too family targeted and too expensive for something happening in my local park.

e like it. We’ve got a 16-year-old son and this year decided to take our holiday later so he can go. It’s good for our youngsters to be able to go to it and then come home. It’s reasonably safe and as we’re festival goers it’s good to give him an idea of what we do. Going? I don’t think we’ll be going. I perhaps don’t know enough of the acts to go.
I
think it’s good. I remember going to Guildford Live as a toddler. It’s a good event that brings everyone together. GuilFest has a legacy as opposed to Magic Summer Live. Going? Yes! I’ll support it being back. It’s nice to have something in the town in the summer everyone can go to.

think it’s good. I’ve only been once or twice but when I heard they weren’t coming back I was sad. I think it’s good for the town. Going? I wish I was going but unfortunately I won’t be here.

I
was really disappointed when it wasn’t on last year. I went in 2012 and loved it so think it will be brilliant. Going? I probably won’t be going because it’s the same weekend as a friend’s wedding but I did love it and really want to go.

xcited! We had so many complaints about Magic Summer Live last year. Instead of going I just listened to Jamiroquai from my garden as I knew I couldn’t go in and out. Going? I’ll be going on all three days provided I can go and come back for lunch but it would be nice to get discounted tickets for people who live in Guildford.

Wild Talk with BRIAN MAY
Y
ou know him as the shaggy-maned rock star and guitarist with Queen. But Brian May also happens to be one of the most vocal animal rights campaigners in the UK. Rich Lee spoke to him ahead of his appearance at Wildlife Rocks at Guildford Cathedral on 5th May… How did you get involved with Wildlife Rocks?
Where does your interest in animals and conservation come from?
It’s all Anne Brummer’s (CEO) fault, really. Anne has run a wildlife rescue, Harper Asprey in Camberley, for many years and has rescued hundreds if not thousands of animals. So I got involved when she asked if she could use some of my land for the soft release of some of her animals.
It goes back a long way but I think I just had a growing feeling throughout my life that things weren’t right with the way human beings treated other species on this planet. I’m an astronomer and to astronomers the idea that human beings are somehow, in evolutionary or cosmological terms, more important than the rest of the planet’s species is quite laughable.
The idea behind Wildlife Rocks is to generate more interest and awareness of what’s going on and about how fast our wildlife is disappearing. It’s about what kind of world we want for our children. There’s only been one before, so this is the second one. I was just staggered by what Anne and her team achieved last time and this year’s Wildlife Rocks will be even more astonishing!
What will you be playing at the event and who are you playing with? I’ll be playing some acoustic songs with (West End singer and actress) Kerry Adams. I’ll be plugging in the guitar as well – there may be a Queen song in there, you never know! We do have the Troggs playing which is making me very excited. ‘Wild Thing’ is of course a very appropriate anthem for what we do. We have the legendary Hawkwind, Shirley Higton, the wonderful founder of Born Free, Virginia McKenna, live poetry and all sorts of wonderful stalls. It’s all very positive. Wildlife Rocks is not preachy, it’s not showing you images of animals being tortured to try and persuade you to our cause. It’s all about celebrating what we are on this planet and enjoying the freedom of animals and our own.
When did you decide to get political about issues of animal welfare? I put my sword on, I suppose, in the run-up to the last general election, when I suddenly realised that what David Cameron and his buddies stood for was the return of blood sports. In the beginning I couldn’t really believe it; I thought he seemed a decent enough chap. But the more I looked into it I realised that these issues are incredibly important to that clique of people. That’s when we set up the Save Me project (www. save-me.org.uk) to fight for the creatures that don’t have a voice.
But the advocacy swings both ways? Well they are definitely vocal about it; in the cause of animal cruelty you are up against people who are absolutely fighting you every inch of the way for the right to abuse animals. If that’s a part of human nature that’s rooted there then it ought to be rooted out! I think it’s a defect of human nature.
Is a repeal of the hunting ban still a threat? Well, assuming a recent report that suggests that Cameron has given up on the idea of a free vote on repealing the act is true, it’s very welcome news to us. But
it’s important to remember that Cameron would be reluctantly abandoning this case.
Rock star, composer, writer, astronomer, activist: how do you balance all of your diverse pursuits? With great difficulty! It’s on the borders of insanity what I do. I’ve learned, over the years to delegate to people that I trust and that’s a big part of it. I love to create and to make things happen and if I’m not part of a process like that then I start to feel very odd, like something’s gone wrong. I’m not a person who likes sitting around on a beach doing nothing. Not for very long, anyway!
What next for the mighty Queen? Well, we’re gearing up to do a very big tour. When you press that button, life starts to move very fast again. We’re touring with (American pop star) Adam Lambert and going to the USA, Japan, Korea and probably Australia as well. It’s turned into something comparable to what Queen were doing back in the glory days. It’s a great feeling to gear up and do things at that level, just one more time. Maybe...

n last month’s Our Citizens we descended on the town centre to ask for YOUR thoughts about Guildford. There’s a lot of love for Guildford among you lot, that much was clear, and you were particularly positive about
What is the Council doing about all the potholes in our roads? John Furey, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, says:
We’re working flat out to give our residents better, longer-lasting road surfaces. These works have a 10-year guarantee, cutting both our repair bill and how often we need to improve roads.” We’re doing everything we can to put things right for the residents of Surrey. We fixed 18,500 potholes in January and February and over the next few weeks we’re repairing up to 17,000 more, with hundreds being filled in every day. On top of this, we’ll continue our Operation Horizon project to completely overhaul more than 300 miles of roads most in need of improvement and tackle the root cause of potholes.
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Community
TOWN the town’s friendly character and atmosphere, its great shopping, charming high street and proximity to London. But there were some things that you all agreed could be better. We put two of your main concerns to the Council…
Why is parking so expensive in Guildford? Guildford Borough Council Says:
The attractiveness of Guildford as a retail centre and tourist attraction, along with its thriving economy, has led to increasing pressures on parking in the town. An average of 10,000 cars per day use the town’s public car parks. The estimated income for 2013-14 is around £5.7million. We invest any surplus over and above operating costs into our overall services for residents, businesses and visitors. It is recognised that it is impossible to meet the demand for road space in Surrey and that regulated parking provision is an effective means of managing the number of cars that enter congested urban areas. However, this must be balanced against the need for parking for residents, business and visitors in a wellpopulated urban area

OUR HISTORY: THE SHAG STONE ...A POTTED HISTORY OF WHERE WE LIVE AND WHO LIVED HERE by Will Knowlton
A
long time ago, a megalith (that’s Oxbridge for a big stone) used to sit next to a ford that was on the Reigate Road over the awesomely named Shag Brook just near Buckland. According to the standard local tripe that all communities seem to thrive on, the Shag Stone was home to a grotesque, hairy and nasty kind of chap who looked like some weird deformed bipod, sporting fire red eyes, razor sharp claws and a serious hatred for men in wigs and tail coats. According to Miss Miggins ( I made that name up but you can totally imagine her) this ogre in need of a toe nail trim would pass his days lying in wait and attacking anyone who bounced along and didn’t pay their respects to the stone. How do you do that? “I’m sorry to hear about your ejection from a volcano 27 millennia ago. Hope you’re ok? How’s granite these days, still struggling to become a rounded massif?”
…home to a grotesque, hairy and nasty kind of chap… sporting fire red eyes, razor sharp claws and a serious hatred for men in wigs and tail coats
Anyhoo, a local boy who just got back from the Napoleonic Wars (and was therefore as hard as a coffin nail - if you made it through that one, you’ve got cahones) decided he’d put the whole farce to rest and said he’d ride over the ford at midnight during a full moon. As we know from Hammer Horror movies, anything done at this time is double risky. So, Bob (we’ll call him Bob because I’m always on a word-count) set off on his ride into the unknown. It is said that he reappeared quite quickly, stammered that he’d made it across but from that moment until he carked it he never went over the ford in the dark again. DA DA DAAAAAAAA. Now To be fair, back in the day when flint napping was all the rage, the old Shag Stone was probably dedicated to some pagan god, because in pagan religion putting a rock next to a stream was all significant or something. Also the name’s quite interesting because, despite the fact that it’s a national sport, every weekend the word shag didn’t always mean what it means today. A “Shag” actually comes from the Old English for demon, no difference in translation when it comes to it actually. So what became of this horrible beast that lurked besides the stream? Well a little while later the ford was closed and a bridge put in its place. A local vicar took it upon himself to fight the good fight and got the workman to remove the stone; turns out that the legend was soooo believable that no local geezer would have touched it. Now here’s the REALLY surprising bit, I mean I never would have seen this coming: the removal of the stone solved all the local woes because there’s been no trouble ever since. Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice
A PATIENT’S STORY By Rich Lee Diagnosed with a brain tumour at 37, Tim Clarke came close to losing hope. Here he tells us how he recovered thanks to the care and support of the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham…
I
n 2010, everything in Timothy Clarke’s life seemed to be on course. Having moved from Stilton to Fleet for his job at a national car rental company, Tim, his wife Lucy and their two young children were finally settling into their new life. With only the house to fix up, a demanding new role to manage at work and two kids to bring up, the 37-year old relished the challenges ahead. Then came the day in September that Tim lost his voice, and everything changed.
“I
was still able to walk, look around, move and do everything as normal but I just couldn’t talk, for several minutes at a time. I put it all off and got on with work but saw a doctor about it who said there was nothing wrong with me.”
But the problem refused to go away. Tim tried to hide it from those around him, until a fateful phone call saw his speech crumble into incoherent rambling. After some minutes the voice at the other end of the line simply said: “Tim. You need to get this sorted out.” Seeking a second medical opinion, Tim asked for a referral for a CT scan at Frimley Park Hospital. They confirmed his problem two days later. A glioblastoma malignant brain tumour. Brain cancer. “I just thought ‘what am I going to do now?’ I stayed there, in the waiting room, had a cup of tea, and thought about my kids. My wife came to pick me up (my license was revoked) and I didn’t want to tell her why I was there until we got home. I’d never lied to her before. Once we parked in the driveway I

told her and we both fell apart. “We spent the weekend wondering and worrying. Although the tumour was diagnosed as static, the doctors couldn’t say how the cancer might progress.” Results from another hospital later revealed that the cancer had progressed to its severest phase: stage four. Surgeons then removed 35% of the tumour on Tim’s brain. “I was able to talk after the operation but then I started radiotherapy for six weeks followed by chemotherapy. I deteriorated physically in every way after that.
Then came the day in September that Tim lost his voice, and everything changed. “The worst part was the feeling of negativity. It [the tumour] was getting worse along with my attitude. I got weaker and weaker. I struggled to walk upstairs. I didn’t want the kids to see me when they came home, even though I badly wanted to see them. I was spending hours asleep during the day and then I’d just wake up and cry.” His depression meant a fiveweek stay at the Priory Hospital in Woking. He returned home with a measure of courage again and the willingness to do “Whatever it took.” That’s when the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice called and set Tim on the path to reclaiming his life back from cancer.
I deteriorated physically in every way. “We just had a chat at first. I said I was open to anything; that I wasn’t ready to give up. They suggested I visit the day centre and I agreed. I was picked up by a volunteer once there was given a comfy chair among a group of other clients. I was by far the youngest and was still very negative and didn’t know what to do. But it was meeting other people, just chatting, that turned everything around. After two weeks, I completely chilled out. “There was a guy who was close to my age who was in agony from his condition and was very negative - as was I still. But as the weeks went on, we got to know each other and talked a lot, until we were just taking the mick out of each other. We’d draw together and make things out of clay and laugh our heads off.” When his friend passed away at the Hospice, Tim understood how fortunate he had been. With his health returning, he knew it was time for his visits to the Hospice to come to an end. “I wanted to
keep going but I was positive to move on so someone else could take my place. A volunteer I knew got in touch with me a few months after just to ask how I was. I can’t express how much I appreciated that.”

our years since his diagnosis, Tim Clarke’s life seems to be on course once more, although in ways he had never expected. His cancer remains static and stable and his MRI visits have dropped from every three months to six months as a result. Thanks to the compassion of his employers, he enjoys financial peace of mind, although he suspects he will not be able to work at his old job as before. “I need something more now,” he says. “Now I focus on each day. elebrating its 60th anniversary this year, the Surrey County Show returns to Stoke Park on May 26th with all the spectacle and excitement that visitors have come to expect from the UK’s largest one day agricultural show.
WWI With the centenary of WWI, history is woven into this year’s show. Talking to... ROBERT CRAY to do something new with stuff we already know.
The success of Strong Persuader in the 1980’s was due, in part, to MTV. With such a different landscape, do you think it’s harder for acts to find that kind of success nowadays? Yes, it is. It’s a lot harder. The whole thing has changed along with the mood and the atmosphere and what people consider success is. MTV was great for us, but we’d already been a band for ten years before that. We got a lucky break but we still had to do the work.
You’re in that elite club of guitarists who are identified with the iconic Fender Stratocaster guitar. What keeps you coming back to the Strat? The Strat to me is just like the ultimate workhorse. It covers all the bases. I love playing rhythm on it, you can beat the hell out of it. It’s very simply made and it gives me what I want when I play solos. It does it all.
What were your first memories of music and what led you to pick up the guitar in the first place?
by Rich Lee
C
onsidered one of the finest blues guitarists of his generation, Robert Cray helped reinvigorate blues music in the 1980’s when the Robert Cray Band stormed the charts with the album Strong Persuader and single Smoking Gun. His music also explores rhythm & blues and soul music, no more so than on his latest album, In My Soul: a record full of sunshine grooves, heartfelt ballads and his unmistakable guitar playing and singing. With his current tour bringing him to Guildford’s G Live on May 18th we caught up with the five times Grammy winner…
Your new album In My Soul –your seventeenth studio album-is heavily influenced by 60’s and 70’s soul. Was that a conscious decision on your part? No it wasn’t actually. We wanted to work with Steve Jordan (producer). Steve had a couple of ideas that he suggested to me before going into the studio, and one of them was the Otis Redding song Nobody’s Fault but Mine. He said ‘Robert, I know you’d kill this song, what do you think of it?’ and I loved that song! The rest of the material came from the band and me. We didn’t know what one and the other had
until a week prior to the studio. And then it all fell into sync, you know?
You recorded it in December 2013 and now here you are, in April, touring the album. Is that working pace normal for you? Yeah, you know we don’t spend a lot of time in the studio, trying to perfect something that can’t be perfected. Just get a really good attempt at it. I prefer live performance, though. Going on stage is a challenge that I welcome, to try to make music and have fun at it and yet still try
It was the Beatles, and the excitement of when they were coming to the States. After that, me and my friends wanted guitars, wanted to be Beatles. I started playing guitar just like all my friends, but unlike them I never quit.
When did you discover the blues? A couple of friends in high school had been listening to BB King, Magic Sam, Buddy Guy and I fell into that gang. My parents had a bunch of those records at their house. So pretty soon their records started disappearing! It was so interesting and so different from everything else that we’d been listening to. Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and his so-called association with the devil, all those double-entendres in the songs. We’re like fifteen years old and thinking ‘man, this is cool!’
Finally, what do you plan to do after this tour? Well, this year’s going to see us on the road quite a bit. There’s a couple of US and European tours to take us up until the fall. So we probably won’t take a break until the winter!

RECIPES: Veritable Vegetables
THE CLASSIC VEGETABLE CHILLI
T
his is always a real crowd pleaser. The amount of chilli used can be altered to your taste. This recipe makes a spicy chilli with a kick but if you really don’t like it hot, substitute the fresh chilli for mild chilli powder.
1
Sauté the onion in the olive oil until soft then add the peppers and garlic and cook for 3 minutes.
2
Add the ground cumin and coriander and stir until all the ingredients are well covered. Then add the fresh chilli, beans and chopped tomatoes. Stir well.
3
Bring to the boil then reduce to a simmer and cover. Cook for 1 hour. You may need to add a little water if it looks like it’s drying out.
4
Meanwhile finely chop the red onion, tomatoes and pepper to make your salsa. You can use a food processor if you have one. Combine them in a bowl then mix in the coriander and avocado.
5
Serve with rice, the salsa and sour cream. Feel free to add more fresh coriander as you like and of course don’t forget the tortilla chips.
Ingredients (Serves 4 -6) Chilli • 2 tbsps olive oil • 1 large onion finely diced • 2 cloves of garlic crushed • 2 large peppers, any colour, diced • 1 fresh red chilli finely chopped • 2 tsps ground cumin
Salsa • 1 medium red onion • 4 large tomatoes seeds removed • 1 red pepper • 2 ripe avocados diced into large chunks • Fresh coriander finely chopped
• 2 tsps ground coriander • 1 can of kidney beans • 1 can of black beans • 2 cans of chopped tomatoes
To Serve • Rice and tortilla chips • Sour cream

his dish is based upon a classic pasta with crab and chilli recipe. It is super quick to make so have everything prepared before you start cooking.
Ingredients
(Serves 4 )

Grate your courgettes then place them in a clean tea towel and give them a good squeeze to remove any excess liquid, then put to one side until needed.
2
• 4 cloves of garlic finely diced
Place your pasta in a large pan of boiling water and cook for around 8 – 10 minutes until al dente (with a little ‘bite’).
3
Meanwhile heat 3 tbsps of olive oil in a large frying pan and add the chilli and garlic. Cook for 1 minute being careful not to burn.
4
Add the grated courgettes. Stir well and cook over a medium heat until soft. Then keep warm over a low heat while your pasta finishes cooking.
5
Drain your pasta. Add the last tbsp of oil to the drained pasta making sure it is well covered. Combine the pasta and courgette mixture, mixing well.

• Black pepper

ant to eat out this May but prefer to keep it clean and healthy too? Well, whether you’re vegetarian or not, there are plenty of places in Surrey to go for a wholesome hit, where they serve delicious organic, meat-free dishes that would tempt even the most fervent carnivore. Here we pick five of the best from the veggie’s patch…
THE BEANO, Guildford
I
t’s perhaps Guildford's worst 'best kept secret' in that most of the town’s discerning foodies, veggie or not, know about this humble little restaurant on the 1st floor of the Guildford Institute. Leone has been serving fantastic vegetarian cuisine here for nearly 30 years making the Beano a little institution within the institute. bout the furthest you can get from that old standby: nut-loaf; the special Vegetable Discovery tasting menu at Drakes in Ripley is vegetarian food at its most creative and inspired. With nine courses from the kitchen of Michelinstarred chef Steve Drake, it’s an aptly named journey of discovery in the possibilities and versatility of vegetarian cuisine. Vegetable Discovery tasting menu costs £80 per person and is available for dinner Tuesday and lunch/dinner Wednesday – Saturday.

“Y
ou don’t miss the meat when you come to my restaurant!” says Ritchie Sakthivel, owner of this award-winning vegetarian restaurant overlooking the Thames. We can see why. The menu at the Riverside runs a gamut of cuisines from Italian to Indian, Mediterranean and even Caribbean. Literally, the world on a plate, so who needs meat? THE GURKHA DURBAR, Grayshott
T
his modest little Nepalese restaurant in the picturesque village of Grayshott is the pride of its owner, real-life Gurkha Mani Ra, and a favourite among Surrey’s curry lovers. Their dishes offer a melting pot of flavours and techniques arising from Nepal’s position between India and China, but their vegetarian options in particular are quietly putting the restaurant on the culinary map of Surrey. Freshly prepared, tantalisingly spiced and all served with a smile. The Gurkha Durbar, 30 Headley Rd, Grayshott, GU26 6LD 01428 605855 | thegurkhadurbar.com

ollow the sound of mellow reggae and dubstep floating from the Borough alley and you’ll come to The Barn: a café/bar so bohemian it hurts. As if sprung whole from a Rough Guide book, The Barn is the perfect place to kick back, tuck into some mezze and other delicious veggie dishes and enjoy a superb coffee or cocktail made by the friendly owners. Upstairs, there’s a lounge for live music and meditation workshops among other events. Hardly out of the way, but ‘far out’ all the same. WHERE TO EAT: Matahari, Guildford by Rich Lee
I
’ve never been to the Far East although many people I know have done. Too many, if I’m honest. Not that I’d ever begrudge my backpacking buddies any of their travels to distant golden beaches, ‘lost’ jungle temples, hot, neon-drenched street markets and giddy full moon parties. They sound great, really. Just less so after about the sixtieth telling. I could regale them with tales of my exploits in deepest, darkest Runnymede that would make them rip up their Rough Guides, if they’d ever let me get a word in... Not that I’m bitter, but my own Asian odyssey still looks a few years off. In the meantime, it’s highly fortunate, for me and other Surrey foodies, that the Matahari restaurant offers an astonishingly authentic taste of the Far East just off Guildford High Street. Owner Selkie Khoo’s vision was for a restaurant that brought together the cuisines of China, Japan, Thailand and India, all blended into the unique traditions of Malaysian cooking; a fusionconcept of flavours that has been successful enough to make her restaurant a favourite of Guildford diners for eleven years and a winner of ‘Best Overall Restaurant’ at the Guildford Dining Awards. The scope is evident in a menu crammed with enticing dishes from all corners of Asia.
Fortunately, Selkie makes a charming and thorough tour guide, talking us through the various options and the influences therein. We start –at her suggestion- with a plate of ethereally tender steamed scallops with ginger and garlic and a splash of soy. Next, Selkie promised some wonderful tofu made fresh on-site, and when the delicately fried, silky soft golden cubes arrived, garnished with spring onion and chilli, this tofu cynic quietly converted. A pit stop before mains saw Matahari’s dedicated sushi chef show off his chops with an exquisite Japanese paradise roll: expertly rolled ‘inside out’, lightly topped with tempura prawns and jewelled with fish roe, the whole thing lifted with flavours from pickled ginger and a daring dot of hot wasabi. Our mains presented a dish of perfectly cooked skate wings that fell off the bone into a rich spicy bean sauce, a bamboo platter spilling with nasi-gorengsambal (sticky fried rice, prawns, egg and shredded chicken) and a showstopper chef’s special coriander beef curry served simmering in a lacquered clay pot. Deeply fragrant from herbs and coconut and with a little floral note from lotus leaf, this was meltingly tender meat bathed in all the warming Thai flavours we
know and love. That the meal was enjoyed in the winningly rustic –yet elegantinterior of the restaurant’s 500 year old listed building just added to its overall charm, making the Matahari a culinary crossroads of fantastic eastern cuisine right here in the home counties. And Lonely Planet can quote me on that.

e live in a wonderful town and without a doubt, the countryside on offer to us on our very doorsteps is superb. But sometimes we just need to get away from it all. "But I have a Jack Russel who knows when I have left the country and won't speak to me for a month upon my return!" Don't we all! ow for those of you who are uninitiated, Glamping is seriously posh and luxurious camping. This is not a nylon tent and a stove on the side of Ben Nevis; this is something entirely different. Featherdown has locations across the UK, but in the theme of keeping it local, we would like to highlight Manor Farm in Alton.
didn’t it? The toilet is actually a mains flushing contraption, so no tanks with funny smells or that strange blue water that seems to inhabit many a portaloo.
First, the “tents”: Now, the use of the inverted commas is entirely deliberate. I touched on this a moment ago, but let me reiterate: these tents are not small triangle jobs with little or no space; they are in fact very spacious, chic and luxurious. First of all, and I think most importantly, the toilet is en suite. Yes, that got your attention
There is a double bed, a further single bed and (my own personal favourite) a canopy bed, hidden in a cupboard. The main area of the tent is open plan, a little pipe stove and kitchen area where you’ll find everything you need to rustle up some country grub. The interior is light and airy without being cold; you won’t

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Lifestyle/Travel find yourself stirring in the small hours freezing and reaching for an extra layer and the tents are warm and, dare I say it, snuggly. Having emerged from the beds of greatness and having gently coaxed the fire to life in the stove, it’s time to take that first breath of fresh air. Open up the front of the tent and take in the view of rolling hills and the gentle noises of the farm. The beauty of Manor Farm is that everything you need for breakfast is right there; collect your eggs from the chicken coop, saunter over to the farm’s larder to stock up on bacon, sausages and milk… There’s no stress, just the gentle pace of country life; a life without the complications of the rush hour, the school run or Smithers from accounts. Not a stone’s throw from your tent you will find lovely running hot water cascading from showers, and these are housed in a converted barn. hat does the heralding of summer mean to you? Golden sands? Sunny skies? Ice cream? Buckets and spades? Well we might not have any beaches in Woking or Guildford but they can be yours by jumping on the train and heading down to St Ives in Cornwall. ‘Too far!’ I hear you say. Well hang on, hear me out. Now let’s be fair, the thought of being cooped up in a car for hours, kind of defeats the purpose of a weekend away. So then, how about the train instead, for only on the train can one can sit back and watch the stunning countryside fly past the window without lifting a finger. On arrival in St Ives it’s time to find your home from home. We have such a place: the town’s newest boutique guest house with its six individual guest rooms nestling in the historic centre. We give you Trevose Harbour House. This boutique guest house (which opened in March 2013) is ideally situated to enjoy the many cafés and restaurants that the historic seaside town has to offer. The town itself is crammed with things to see and do; numerous art galleries, workshops and studios are scattered amongst the delightful streets and alleyways of the town. The owners have redesigned the guest house to present a new ethos and experience for the discerning traveller. So what’s on offer? Well, there are six individually designed bedrooms which feature Neal’s Yard Remedies, Wi-Fi and giant beds all covered in sumptuous Egyptian cotton (amongst other little luxuries). Trevose offers a warm welcome, impeccable service and a mouthwatering breakfast. Just look at the menu: granola parfait, croissants, locally sourced eggs, bacon and sausages sit alongside fruit juices, muesli and organic toast made with locally made bread. Indeed the whole menu is alive with local, fresh and organic produce. With their stylish coastal setting and just a quiet whisper of retro design, they have created an ideal place to relax, unwind and explore all that St Ives and Cornwall has to offer. Thinking of Taking up Golf?
S
urrey is a golfer’s playground, but for many, it can be an intimidating sport to begin. We asked Billy Irvine, a PGA Qualified Golf Teaching Professional and instructor with the Stack & Tilt ™ Network, for some advice on how to take that first swing at golf…
Who plays golf and why? People of all ages and walks of life play these days. Golf is definitely no longer the male dominated, wealthy, elitist sport it once was. Golf brings health benefits from walking and swinging, plus it’s both a social game and one that can be played solo.
What should a new player look for in their first set of clubs? The correct design of club for your standard or level. If possible, get the clubs fitted to your body frame. A decent set of clubs won’t make you play better, but a bad set can make you play worse.
Where should beginners play? Find a local driving range to hit full shots and learn the swing along with lessons. Then be progressive, start on a small par 3 course and work your way up to the bigger courses.
What is the best way to learn to play golf? As a coach of course I would promote lessons first on the range and practice facilities. It is a tricky game to get good at mainly because the ball is so small. But if you find a coach who can teach you progressively at a steady rate, you can enjoy progress with clear goals in mind.
Can you play golf on a budget? Definitely! A set of clubs is the main outlay at first, but you can hire clubs at first to try before you buy at many golf centres. Joining a public or private course can be cost effective if you are really starting to play a lot, especially junior players, as the membership fees can be very reasonable.
What is ‘golf etiquette’ and why is it important? It is important to prevent the playing speed on the course from grinding to a halt, especially if the players are new to the course. It is also to protect the course from damage. Lastly, there are some traditions that some golf clubs, most of which are there just to create a good social environment for everyone. Billy teaches alongside his colleague Darren Brewer at Broadwater Park Golf Club in Godalming. Visit the website at broadwaterparkgolf.co.uk and email Billy at birvine@ stackandtiltpro.com

his test dummy is just that. I haven’t picked up a golf club in over a decade, if not longer, so the words test and dummy have never appeared as both apt and true as they are at the time of writing. I’ll admit that golf courses can be a daunting environment for novices and beginners…being hurried along by the golfers behind you or eternally looking for a lost ball in the rough can leave beads of sweat on my brow. So with this in mind and keen to get my swing on I headed for Top Golf in Addlestone (just a hop and skip away). Top Golf are on a mission, a mission to get everybody, young and old to take up a club and play the game of golf. Essentially Top Golf, provide a gaming scenario for the driving range. More than just markers with how many yards your ball has travelled, the aim of the game (just one of them) is to score as many points by getting
the ball hit a target. Not just any golf ball…no, no. At Top Golf the balls have chips and sensors that know how far you have hit the ball and which targets you have hit. Screens are located in the bays that will give you all the info you need. Professionals are on hand should you need assistance and if you did want to play a proper round of golf then they have a 9 hole course to facilitate your needs. Of course sustenance is also available via the excellent bar and restaurant in the club house. This is truly a great day out for both a group of friends and the family and comes highly recommended by the good folk (us) at The Guide… Top Golf = Test Dummy Friendly Moated Farm Drive, New Haw Road, Addlestone, Surrey KT15 2DW 01932 858551 | topgolf.com/ surrey

TRADING ONLINE
F
ollow these six handy tips to help you trade successfully online and ensure that you remain legally compliant: Produce a robust set of standard trading terms which will govern sales to your customers. These should, among other things, make it clear that they take precedence over any other terms or conditions. Make sure that your website includes all information that you are legally required to disclose. For instance The E-Commerce Regulations require you to clearly set out the steps that your customers must follow to conclude an online contract with you (these would normally be contained in your trading terms); Be aware of the Distance Selling Regulations which under certain circumstances entitle customers to cancel contracts. Prepare a set of terms of website use prohibiting unauthorised reproduction of materials on your website and unacceptable behaviour such as hacking, introducing viruses and uploading unacceptable material. Develop a privacy/cookie policy outlining your policy on the collection, use and storage of customers’ personal data and your use of “cookies”. Bear in mind other relevant regulations such as the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations. For further information or advice on trading online contact Hugh Mulley at Setfords Solicitors. Hugh is a specialist company and commercial lawyer with over 20 years experience acting for clients across the business spectrum. 01483 408780 or setfords.co.uk
INTERNET SAF by Will Knowlton
I
nternet safety: it’s a divisive subject so let’s start with a question. Do you need to be concerned about computer security? Yes, you do, but there’s no point in being completely paranoid, however. A little foresight goes a long way. We’ll start with a few simple pointers:
DON’T post personal information (Name, address, age, birthdate, credit card number, top ten favourite Abba tracks etc.) on message boards. General rule of thumb is this: if you wouldn’t be comfortable telling a total stranger, don't post it on the internet. DON’T fall for the trick "dialog box" ads. These things appear on a webpage, looking just like Windows dialog boxes and say things like "Your computer may be unsecure. Click to scan now". DON’T. Since in most cases it's an ad, it doesn’t matter, but when you close it, make sure you use the REAL close button, not a fake one that’s part of the ad. DON’T install software from untrusted sources. DON’T open email attachments from people you don't know or an unexpected email attachment from someone you do know. DO be very careful when typing addresses into the address bar. A typo of one letter can lead to an entirely different site, or worse a spoof site attempting to steal your information. DO run anti-virus software. DO keep your computer up to date.
A
hh Spam, bloomin’ spam. Nobody likes spam, but we all get it. First and foremost, be careful who you trust your email address with. A lot of the time when websites are offering "free software" or a dream
holiday to Bora Bora they just need your e-mail address. The truth is they’re going to sell your email address to make a profit. How can you be sure that a site isn't going to sell your address? First of all read their Privacy Policy. You know that thing that all decent websites have and nobody ever reads? They are required to disclose what they will do with your information in there. If a site doesn't have a privacy policy, then it's likely they are going to sell your information (or worse). But if you REALLY need that piece of software or whatever else and it’s a sure bet they’re going to sell your details, what you can do is open a second email address and use that email address for occasions where a website's trustworthiness can’t be easily determined. Another way spammers can get your email address is by bots that scour the web looking for things you look up. If you have a public profile on a message board, or post your email in a post (or anywhere else public) then bots collect that and spam you. You’ve got two choices in this case: use a secondary email address that's "unsecure" or trick the e-mail gathering bots. It's really pretty simple. Let's say your email is JohnDoe@ dreamviews.com and you wanted to have that email publicly in your profile. You could post it as JaneDoe_at_dreamviews_dot_ com or JaneDoe@dreamviews_ no_spam_.com. This has the effect of confusing some email collection bots. Simple but effective but it does have the downside of confusing people who can't see through the camouflage, so to speak.

FETY L
astly let’s look at these Anti-Virus programs. They’re just like they sound. They’re applications designed to protect you from viruses. The main differences between the free and paid versions are: • A free version has no technical support. • A free version is given lower priority when connecting to the update server. • A free version is only available in one language, you don't get super advanced settings, and you can't use it in a commercial setting, as in, for your business. To be fair there are limitations to a free version, but there are some really good free applications out there. However, buyer beware. If you buy software from a reputable source (like PC World, Argos, Bitdefender and the like) it’s all well and good but buy it from a place that also sells bootleg DVDs and you may want to be a little more cautious. Don’t run more than one antivirus application at once because they can conflict and this can cause them not to function properly, or even worse can cause damage. Remember that anti-virus programs aren’t foolproof. They all do a good job but as we’ve seen recently sometimes a new virus can infect people before the virus databases have been updated to protect them. Getting rid of a virus to which there is not yet an antidote can be really a little sporty.
Anti-virus checklist: DO run ONE good anti-virus application. DO scan your entire system for viruses on a regular basis. THINK before you download from the internet. REMEMBER that anti-virus programs are not a substitute for good common sense.
CYBER SECURITY SEMINAR May 14th
W
e are all aware that the landscape of the Internet is dynamic, mercurial and fascinating. While on many levels this is amazing and exciting it is fair to say that in a world where we are becoming increasingly reliant on the net for a growing amount of personal, social and economic activity, we must face the fact that the world of the Internet super highway is far from safe. Ask yourself, what are the forces at play? In what way will the shape of cyberspace change and with these changes what issues will be raised for industry, governments and us, the users. Join Mike St John Green as he discusses and explores these complex but pressing issues at The University of Surrey on the 16th of May. Mike spent 40 years working for the British government, including 30 years at GCHQ. He then began a new career as an independent cyber security consultant. He worked for 4 years in the Cabinet Office on Cyber Security policy.

Grace Park, account manager at Farnham based PR and Communications company, the Blueballroom, gives us five insights into the benefits of blogging for your business.
C
ompany blogs are on the increase and as an agency specialising in internal communications and PR, we know why. Company blogs can provide a number of benefits depending on what your communication objectives are. Below is a quick overview covering some of the main benefits of corporate blogging.
MAY 2014
1.
INCREASE TRAFFIC TO YOUR SITE
Every time a blog is posted to your website it provides Google (other search engines are available) with an indication that your website is active. The more you post, the more Google comes to check what content is being posted. This all helps to increase your company ranking on search pages. In addition, keyword rich copy will aid your search results as Google will see that the content you’re posting is relevant for the terms that people are searching for. Using keywords for your business should, in theory, come quite naturally when writing an industry specific blog post but it’s worth bearing in mind to keep you on track.
2.
KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS
Writing regular blog posts is a great way to provide an easily accessible resource for customers. Take advantage of the opportunity by offering your customers information and insight into the products or services you supply. Focusing your company blog to serve your customers can help to strengthen relationships and position your company as a trustworthy source of knowledge and expertise.
3.
REVEAL INSIGHTS INTO WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN’T
Keeping an eye on the web analytics of your blog posts will yield insights into what’s popular and what’s not. By identifying the popular posts, click throughs,
referrals and shares you’ll be able to focus attention more closely on the subjects that matter most to your audience.
4.
CREATE RELEVANT CONTENT
Blogging regularly will result in your company obtaining a wealth of unique information, facts and opinion about your area of business. Blog content can often yield fascinating insights into hot topics that can be expanded, or simply provide inspiration for research pieces, press releases, white papers and editorial features.
5.
EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT
Harness your employees’ knowledge by gaining their input into the company blog. Find out what your team thinks is most important to their customers. What are the common queries the customer service team hears? Find out from the front line what the pain points are and use your blog as a platform to provide solutions. Taking your employees’ suggestions and feedback can be a great opportunity to engage with them around subjects that impact their daily jobs.
T
o gain the most benefit from blogging, hard work, commitment and time are necessary requirements. If you have the resources or appropriate support in place, company blogs can be a great avenue to explore and discuss valid business issues that will yield benefit inside and outside your business.

THE GODALMING TRAVEL COMPANY
Penny Brown and Amanda Gore of the Godalming Travel Company
I
f travel is the only thing we buy that makes us richer, it’s somehow fitting that the Godalming Travel Company should have set up store in the corner of a gift shop on Godalming’s Church Street. After all, like the most memorable gifts we buy our loved ones and receive ourselves, our best holidays and adventures abroad can stay with us for years, lingering long in the memory. With 55 years in the travel industry between them, Penny Brown and Amanda Gore are in the business of providing just such memorable experiences to their customers. Suitably well-travelled themselves, their specialist areas include the Caribbean, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Indian sub-continent and many more exotic destinations.
right hotel for the right person,” agrees Penny. So how did they come to set up shop in the Giftbox? “My sister Michelle took on the Giftbox in May 2013, around the time we were made redundant and Penny I were chatting about doing something ourselves. We debated working from home, but because of comments clients had made, that they like to come in to sit down face to face and chat with us, we thought doing it from home wouldn’t be quite the same thing. “We’d always thought Godalming would be a brilliant place to set up and I’ve been a resident for a long time. We wanted to be visible on the high street but without the big overheads and this was a great way for us to achieve that.”
It’s really rewarding when you can find the right holiday and the right hotel for the right person. In 2013, however, they were made redundant from the agency they had both worked at for the last 16 years. There was no question, though, that they would go on to do anything else with their careers. “Once you’ve started in travel it’s very difficult to leave. We both love it,” says Amanda. “It’s just so varied and interesting and it’s really rewarding when you can find the right holiday and the
Since big-name tour operators became a presence on the high street in the late 1970s, we now live in an age of countless online travel companies and booking sites. But bespoke, independent travel agents can make all the difference for those wanting the peace of mind that comes with letting an expert help you make the right choices for your holiday. And few other companies are better placed to find those
tantalising little extras that can enhance a trip than independent agents like the Godalming Travel Company. “Our incentive is to make sure a customer goes with the right company and are well looked after,” says Penny. “And with all our years in travel we’ve got to know who the good companies are. It’s so nice to pick up the phone and speak to someone you know, who you’ve met; it makes a huge difference. They know what you’re looking for, what you’re expecting and if there happens to be a problem down the line, you know there’ll be someone you trust to help resolve it for you.” Using only fully-licensed and bonded tour operators, a holiday booked with GTC means your trip is always protected by ATOL (Air Travel Organisers' Licensing). It could be argued that in an economy still struggling to shake off a recession, people are less inclined towards ‘extravagant’ expenses as foreign holidays as before, but the two friends and colleagues aren’t fazed. “I think it affected it a little bit, but people are always going to want to go on holiday,” says Amanda. “People work so hard now, the hours are longer, and they’re more stressed. And they have less time to really plan their holidays. That’s where we come in.” The Godalming Travel Comany are at 8 Church Street, Godalming, Surrey, GU7 1EH Contact Penny and Amanda by telephone: 01483 419341 or email: info@godalmingtravel.co.uk

Meet the Team: SCATTERGOODS AGENCY
M
eeting the personnel needs of Surrey’s hospitality and catering industry for almost four decades, Scattergoods are one of the most successful recruitment agencies in the region. We met the team at their offices in Shalford to find out just what makes them work... Scattergoods have come a long way since Phillip Scattergood founded an agency for the recruitment of au pairs back in 1975. As the company managed more and more clients from within the hospitality and catering industry, though, Scattergoods fully hitched their expertise to those sectors in 1996 and have continued to excel in their field ever since. “We are going from strength to strength at the moment,” commercial manager Claire Skelsey tells us. “We’re all ex-industry so everyone here has worked in hospitality and catering so we’re very particular about who we take on. So what sets Scattergoods apart from the competition? “First and foremost it’s our customer service and how we fit the right people to the right jobs. We work to team targets, understanding both the client’s and the candidate’s requirements. Rather than put square pegs in round holes – we’d rather say no and manage people’s expectations properly; we don’t make promises we can’t deliver on.” “It used to be that being a temp was insecure, underpaid and had no rights but these days the advantages of working as a temp are so numerous,” explains managing director Andy Vicos. “You get paid for every minute you work, you accrue holiday for every minute you work. You have ultimate flexibility in the hours you work, pensions are starting this year as well as statutory maternity pay and sick pay. Temps really can become masters of their own destiny.” For more info visit scattergoods.co.uk, call 01483 461950 or email mail@scattergoods.co.uk

I’m 100% passionate about delivering first class service. We all care about what we’re doing – it’s not just about making money. If we get it right, and deliver the service and we’re all happy in our jobs then the money will take care of itself. What’s your favourite dish? I like a good home-cooked roast dinner – my dad makes a great one – and something stodgy for pudding like chocolate fudge brownie.
What do you do? I keep both applicants and clients happy - and general admin. What do you enjoy about working at Scattergoods? I like the people, I like the job. Initially when I joined it fitted well as I’d had two young children. I’d been a caterer previously and was very lucky to have come to Scattergoods. It’s worked very well. I continue to enjoy it. KAREN ELSON Accounts Manager What do you do? Amongst many other things, I’m responsible for the temporary payroll. What do you enjoy about working at Scattergoods? It’s very local to me for one thing. And everyone just gets on so well with each other. What’s your favourite dish? I like a good bit of steak… RACHEL JOHNSON Accounts Assistant What do you do? I handle timesheets, payroll and general accounting. What do you enjoy about working at Scattergoods? It’s a really friendly place to work. The company are also supporting me while I study for my Association of Accounting Technicians qualification What’s your favourite dish? A simple cheese omelette – or a banana split!
CHAY BURROWS Recruitment Consultant What do you do? I put the right candidate in the right place. What do you enjoy about working at Scattergoods? Having previously been a wedding coordinator I really like the buzz at Scattergoods. It’s quite fast-paced. The team works well together and we know our candidates really well. There’s been a lot to take in being new to the job but I’m picking it up really quickly. I have to! What’s your favourite dish? I really enjoy Indian food from a nice restaurant. Particularly a dish called Chicken Korai Gost? Is that how it’s spelled? I’m going to have to look that up… DARREN O’LEARY Senior Consultant What do you do? Looking after our temps and our clients. What do you enjoy about working at Scattergoods? It’s different every day. Unlike other agencies, we’re all in it together at Scattergoods and in it for the candidates and clients. ME
MAY 2014
What do you do?
‘Me’
Nigel Wilkinson SPECIAL EFFECTS WIZARD ON
I work in physical special effects for TV and Film, designing, creating and building whatever it takes to fulfil the director’s vision. It can be anything from a rainy day to a big action disaster scene and some very strange things in between.
How did your career get started? I started at Pinewood Studios working for a small SFX company, learning the business as a trainee from the ground up. We specialised in commercials and pop videos: anything from full size rotating rooms for Jamiroquai videos to splashing water over shampoo bottles for adverts. I once sat in a tree for several hours just dropping leaves…
What do you most enjoy about your work? I love the creativity and the challenge of making the impossible possible. A film crew is like a big family, so the camaraderie is great and it’s good fun to be around each other. There’s never a dull moment and every day is a new challenge. We go to amazing locations from beaches to boats to slums (we once built a slum set next to a real slum only for the locals to move in after we left).
What are the most essential tools in your box of tricks? An adjustable spanner, a Leatherman, WD40 and a roll of gaffer tape. Never go on a job without them!
LOCA L P E O PLE , E X T R AO R DI NARY L I VE S .
Which iconic special effect in cinema history do you wish you could have worked on? The streaks of fire left by the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future. I’d love to say that one was mine!
How does it feel to watch your efforts on the screen? It’s great to see the end product of months of hard work coming together and a great surprise as it’s sometimes a year later that we get to see our work in its full context. We won the Emmy for special effects last year for Game of Thrones, which was a real testament to the hard work of the crew.
You’ve worked alongside some of the biggest actors and directors in TV and film. Do you still get starstruck? It’s strange but I don’t really. I find actors never quite look how you imagine them to in real life. I often find myself not recognising them in the dinner queue or something. Although my wife was very excited to be behind Jon Snow on the plane to Belfast once!
Which character from Game of Thrones do you share the most similarities with? As a special effects crew we are probably most like the Spider. We do loads of things behind the scenes that no one sees or probably realises that we do. Special effects aren’t just the big bangs but the atmosphere, the rain in the background, a fire in a grate, a leaf blowing by, the snow on the floor.
Go on – reveal something juicy that’s coming up in this season of Game of Thrones… That would be telling! The show just keeps getting bigger and better every year so all I can say is don’t miss it, and if you haven’t seen it, do – you won’t regret it. Im a big fan of GoT so working on the production is such a privilege. I’ve been involved since the start so feel hugely proud of the show and its success.
Your work sends you all around the world. What do you most look forward to about coming home to Surrey? Its family first, of course; I can be away for months at a time. I love Guildford. It’s a great place to live and so relaxing to come back to. I think some people think it’s a busy place but I always slow down when I’m home.
