CONTENTS DEAREST READER, “Here today, up and off to somewhere else tomorrow! Travel, change, interest, excitement! The whole world before you, and a horizon that’s always changing!” Never had Toad been more correct when conversing with his partially sighted spring cleaner friend Mole, in Kenneth Grahame’s classic tale of Wind in the Willows. An altogether peculiar opening gambit one might think, but the month of Augustus thrusts us into the summer air like a toddler on a well sprung trampoline and well, Wind in the Willows sums up, oh so well the escapades that one might endure throughout the month. As per your expectations, this month’s publication is the definitive Guide 2 the summertime. Whether your diary has designs on a vacation or a staycation we endeavour to ensure August is accompanied by an abundance of joy and goodwill. We look at occupying your time by helping others and just how important it is to local organisations to have volunteers to call upon and to provide for our fellow citizens, whatever their need. Can you spare some time this summer (and beyond)? We talk to the originator of the seasonal anthem, ‘In the Summertime’ Mungo Jerry about that song and much more. Events and celebrations galore make up the remainder of The Guide 2 Your Month, whilst we also look to the great waterways of Surrey and how best to spend your time on them. Row, row, row… With much information to impart to you, read on dear Reader, read on! Despatch yourselves amongst our fair county and discover true treasures of Surrey. Tell the people, “The Guide 2 Sent You!”

Your Community News NATIONAL TRUST ‘HOPEFUL’ OF REBUILDING

Fire-Hit Clandon Park House

The National Trust today said this summer that it hopes to rebuild, in some shape or form, Clandon Park House, after the 18th century Palladian mansion which was reduced to a shell following a devastating fire on April 29th. The blaze ripped through the building causing the roof and floors to collapse, destroying rooms and thousands of items of historic significance. The external walls however remain largely intact and a specialist team are planning the archaeological salvage operation to recover further items from the building. The park is currently closed to the public. The conservation charity says that the full extent of the damage remains unknown as structural engineers and insurers continue to assess the site. But despite the many uncertainties, the Trust said

it was hopeful that Clandon Park House could be rebuilt and would have a long-term future. “We’re hopeful that one day we can rebuild Clandon but quite how, when and in what form is far from certain at this early stage,” says Helen Ghosh, director-general of the Trust. “We’re still awaiting guidance from the structural engineers on the safety of the house. As we get more information on the extent of the damage, we will be able to take a clearer view on the potential options for Clandon. “Despite the uncertainty, we would like to reassure all those people who love Clandon as much as we do that it will continue in some shape or form in the future.”

LOCAL HISTORIANS CAPTURE GUILDFORD A fascinating new edition book reveals a window onto Guildford’s past… through the Decades

As towns and villages evolve over time, it’s easy for residents to take such changes, be they big or small, for granted. The different and the new all too quickly become the old and familiar, and that has never been truer of Guildford as developments continue to change the civic landscape for every generation. Which is what makes the newly published revised edition of Guildford Through Time such a unique insight into the illustrious history of this part of the country. Reproduced in full colour, the book by local historians David Rose and Bernard Parke is an exciting examination of Guildford, the famous streets and the famous faces, and what they meant to the people of this area throughout the 19th and into the 20th Century. Through exquisite, well-kept photos, readers can see the historical context in which they are set and through the author’s factual captions for every picture, and carefully-selected choice of images, the reader can achieve a reliable view of this area’s history. Readers are invited to follow a timeline of events and watch the changing face of the town, as the authors guide us through the streets of Guildford. Whether you are a resident, visitor or just a history buff, Guildford Through Time Revised Edition is an unmissable window onto the past.

HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL after Lottery Grant £1million grant has been awarded to Dorking’s ‘Forgotten’ Estate…

Following an application for funding made to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), a £1million grant has been awarded to the inspirational ‘Hope Springs Eternal’ Project. The grant will fund restoration work to the Deepdene estate and landscape, including garden buildings, key paths and site of the old Deepdene House, once the grand home of renowned Regency taste-maker Thomas Hope, before being demolished in 1969. Upon completion of the two-year project, residents and visitors will be afforded an exciting opportunity to be enthralled by the grand sights of one of the nation’s magnificent forgotten estates, located just outside Dorking town centre. Public access to the existing Grade II gardens will be extended and access to neighbouring Betchworth Castle and the remarkable Hope mausoleum will feature as just two of the many highlights on a newly formed Deepdene Trail. The project will also deliver a range of educational activities to engage with the local community through the Dorking Museum. Whilst led by MVDC and the Mausolea Monuments Trust, the successful bid was made possible with support and involvement from a number of partners. The grant

will fund restoration work to the Deepdene estate and landscape, including garden buildings, key paths and site of the old Deepdene House, once the grand home of renowned Regency taste-maker Thomas Hope, before being demolished in 1969. Restoration work to the estate’s Hope mausoleum, led by a devoted group of around 25 volunteers, The Friends of Deepdene, began in 2011 and there has been significant progress. The HLF grant will help support future work and fully rediscover this remarkable sleeping landscape.

Your Community News RESIDENTS RAISE ‘SERIOUS CONCERNS’ ABOUT DUNSFOLD PARK PLANS

Artist Impression Developers Dunsfold Park have drawn fire from locals over plans to build 1,800 and community facilities at the site. Some residents say the local infrastructure would not be able to cope with the additional demand, pointing to the poor state of narrow, potholed roads. Included in Dunsfold’s development plans are a primary school, health centre, a combined church, a market square, leisure and community centre, shops and restaurants, a large country park and 30,000 square metres of additional employment space. More than 80% of Dunsfold Park is currently brownfield land, with the site

inaccessible to the general public. Around 173 people attended a consultation at Cranleigh Arts Centre on early July to ask questions and give feedback. Developer, Dunsfold Park, says they intend the plan to create a balanced community by providing jobs on-site and affordable homes for the wider workforce and community: “By transforming the entire Dunsfold Park site, we have an opportunity to create an attractive, pedestrian-friendly place to live and work that incorporates significant areas of public open space and facilities for recreation, shopping and learning.”

In response, the developers have proposed ways to upgrade the infrastructure that include a new access road from the A281 with modifications to junctions with Kings Road, Broadford Road, Station Road, Snowdenham Lane, Barrihurst Lane and Elmbridge Road as well as a ‘high-quality’ bus system link between Dunsfold Park and the surrounding towns, villages and railway stations. More than 80% of Dunsfold Park is currently brownfield land, with the site inaccessible to the general public.

WOKING’S HOE VALLEY SCHOOL PLANS TAKE SHAPE A planning application for construction of the permanent home for Hoe Valley School on land adjacent Egley Road, Woking was submitted to Woking Borough Council for consideration in June. The submitted plans would create a state-of-the-art secondary school in south Woking featuring purposebuilt, high quality, modern teaching and leisure facilities whilst securing valuable leisure resources for the local community. Facilities for the school comprise two teaching wings, main hall, dining and reception areas and sports field. Leisure facilities, for use by the local community and school, operated by Woking Borough Council, comprise a five badminton court sports hall, fitness gym and studios, full athletics facility with eight lane track, three Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs), three five-a-side 3G sports pitches, two grass pitches and shared car parking. Lynne O'Reilly, Chair of Governors at Hoe Valley School, said: "On behalf of the Hoe Valley School and its Board of Governors, I would like to thank everybody for their constructive

feedback received during the public exhibition. We were delighted to receive so many positive responses to our plans which reflect our own aspirations for the project.

The following week a competition day will be held so riders can put into practice all they have learnt and have the chance to win prizes.

If you’re feeling in fine fettle this summer, why not use that energy in service to a great cause? Woking and Sam Beare Hospice work tirelessly to provide palliative care and support for patients and their families living in central Surrey. Their belief is that each person is more than their illness, and that each of us has unique physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs.

The Hoe Valley School will be a community secondary school with four forms of entry and will include a sixth form. Works are already underway to construct a temporary school on the former Coach Park in Woking Park, scheduled to open in September 2015. Subject to planning approval being granted, it is expected the school will move to its permanent site adjacent to Egley Road in September 2017 where it will have capacity for 840 students across seven year groups.

As a charity, WSBH run fantastic fundraising events all year round. But if you’re the sort who likes a physical challenge then it’s not too late to sign up for the following to help raise funds to support the great work they do in our community.

The school will be financed by the Education Funding Agency with the community leisure facilities financed by Woking Borough Council.

OUR CITIZENS: VOLUNTEER SURREY Jacqui Shooting Star chase Children’s Hospice and Shop guildford

Peter

Michael

What is the Guildford Bike Project? Roland: The project was setup to give people who’d been out of work for a length of time experience and help them get back into employment. To give them skills that are transferrable and experience life in the work place again. We provide a vehicle -excuse the pun- to achieve that.

What is a typical day like? I come into the hospice on Thursday mornings. We’re assigned different children and I might have to help get them hoisted, dressed and washed. I might take the children outside, feed them, get them cooking, painting, fun messy stuff like that. Sometimes we take them on outings, or help with activities. Anything and everything really. I also work at the Guildford shop on Tuesday afternoons which is very different but fun.

Bikes are donated by the public, from Surrey Police, the University; all sorts of places. They may be discarded or have been stolen and no one’s come forward to collect them. They’re repaired in our workshop and sold at our shops in Guildford and Woking for, the ma jority selling for between £50 and £100.

Why did you seek voluntary work? I teach part time but I knew I wanted to do some voluntary work too but didn’t know what. I read an article about the charity and the children they support and just clicked on the link for volunteers. It takes time, with interviews and training, but now I’m here I can see why that’s important.

What do find most rewarding about volunteering? Peter (pictured): The project really helps volunteers like me find employment. You’re not sitting in your house, you’re out interacting with the community. And people in the community don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for a bike. To me bikes are my hobby, so doing my City & Guilds here is a really good thing too.

What do find most rewarding about volunteering? I’m not doing it to feel good for myself but I feel if I can do anything for someone, however small, I’ve achieved something. I suppose one of the reasons I do it is because years ago I was very ill, and a lot of people did a lot for me and I recovered. So I figured it was my time to give something back.

Sight for Surrey, Leatherhead Who are Sight for Surrey? Sight for Surrey is a marvellous charity who offers a lifeline to members of our community with a vision impairment who, maybe otherwise feel isolated. I have always felt fully supported by them, especially by their Volunteer Coordinator, and have always been aware of the fact that everybody within the organisation cares. What kind of volunteer work do you do? There were many roles to choose from and I am currently a Virtual Befriender and have also been helping out with administrative tasks in the office. What do you get from volunteering? Some of the people I call every week have become good friends. They all live on their own and often have few visitors; on certain occasions I have been the only person they speak to all week. To me, this underpins the importance of the work that Sight for Surrey does. Visit www.sightforsurrey.org.uk or call 01372 377701 for more information

Got Some Time to Spare? If you want to volunteer but are not sure what kind of work you would like to do, there are volunteer centres in your area that will help you find the right work to suit your lifestyle and commitments.

Who do you volunteer for? Shooting Star Chase are a wonderful charity who help families and children who have life-limiting conditions and who also support families in their homes and after the children pass.

Around Surrey and North East Hampshire, charities and non-profit organisations work tirelessly to both improve their communities and the lives of the most vulnerable people that live there. Volunteer workers are vital to helping these organisations run. These are people for whom giving just a little of their time, energy and passion can make all the difference to somebody else. Oakleaf Enterprise, Guildford Oakleaf is the only mental health charity in Surrey working as a social enterprise to provide vocational training for those suffering from mental health issues. How did you get involved with Oakleaf Enterprise? I came here about thirteen years ago for counselling when I was going through real dire straits and they really helped me. Sometime later I realised I wanted to volunteer and was directed towards Oakleaf who run a number of different training projects, including gardening, upholstery and IT. I have a background in IT so I now help to deliver a very comprehensive, graduated computing course (CLAIT), for everyone from complete beginners to more experienced. I also run a biweekly fitness class. What do you enjoy about your voluntary work? People work at different paces but it’s hugely inspirational to see the determination and effort of individuals here to train and learn new skills. That’s helped by the environment at Oakleaf: the support, the camaraderie and counselling services. It’s a real family. Here, I get support, I get love and understanding that I would not get elsewhere. Visit www.oakleaf-enterprise.org or call 01483 303649 for more info

Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care Shop Volunteer, Fleet, Hampshire Who do you volunteer for? Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care provide support and palliative care for local people with cancer or other serious progressive illnesses. What appealed to you about volunteering for the Hospice? They looked after me in a big way about four years ago after I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. They helped me get back to a position of enjoying life and still wanting to be around. So volunteering is my way of saying thank you to them. What is the nature of your work? I do about four hours a week and do whatever is required. I sort through donations to the shop to be sold, some to be thrown out. I put out pictures, crockery, ornaments and the like on the shelves. I’m happy to steam the clothes if needed. I’m quite open. What do find most rewarding about volunteering? I like being able to say thank you to Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care but it also means that things that were going to be lost are going to be given a new lease of life, which is really what the charity is all about. Kane FM 103.7 Community Radio for Surrey and Hants Who are Kane FM? Kane FM, to me, are a part of community, bringing music and people together. I find everyone who works there are very involved with projects outside Kane FM, such as with schools. They bring in students to teach them about radio and mixing and how to present. They give them a real confidence boost and a sense of direction. How did you get involved with Kane FM? I’d always been interested in radio so about two years ago I approached them and asked if I could spend some time at the station. So I did; I did some flyering for them and got to watch them in the studio which was amazing to me, and then I was given the chance to do an hour’s live slot at the end. I was so nervous! But, once I was away I didn’t want to stop. Then they invited me onto the breakfast show and I said: okay! What do you enjoy about the work? I enjoy people texting in and saying they’re enjoying the show and the music I’m playing. It tends to bring people together who have the same interests. In my career, I do want to be a radio presenter, but I wouldn’t even had these aspirations if I hadn’t had this start at Kane. Helena Star presents her own show on Kane FM 103.7, Thursdays 3pm- 5pm. AUGUST 2015

THE VITAL VOLUNTEERS Volunteering is about as noble a way to spend some of your valuable free time as we can think of – but what’s the deal? And how do we go about it? Here’s a bit of info on the whats, wheres, whys and hows of volunteering in Surrey and North Hampshire…

Why do it? While we have at length covered our charity of the year, Surrey Search and Rescue, in these hallowed pages, we thought for August we’d offer a slightly different flavour. For you see SURSAR are, as most charitable organisations, sustained by the volunteer sector. But they’re one of literally hundreds – and that’s just in this area…

Across Surrey and North Hampshire there are dozens and dozens of charities looking for good-willed members of the general public to give up just a bit of spare time to help, in a vast array of different ways. Whether it’s on call for SURSAR, spending time with an elderly person for a day or working in a charity shop, there’s always a way you can do something a little more altruistic with your free time…

Who Needs Volunteers? In short, just about every charitable organisation in the area! There are several ‘umbrella’ organisations who source volunteer roles, pairing up your own circumstances and skill sets to roles out there. Are you good with people but only have a day to spare? Perhaps you’d like to spend it at a care home. Slightly more reserved, but with more time to spare? Something more administrative is perhaps more your bag. Whatever it is though, there will be something that these guys can help you with.

Voluntary Action South West Surrey (VASWS) told us that on their books there are over 400 registered charities, all of whom will be looking for various volunteer roles throughout the year. This is in the Guildford and Waverley area alone… VASWS run local projects to enable under-represented groups to become more active in the community, so be sure to find out more at voluntaryactionsws.webeden. co.uk.

Rushmoor Volunteer Centre, who provide help and services in Aldershot, Farnborough, Cove, North Camp and the surrounding areas, work with at least 200 organisations. Much like VASWS,

these all-round good eggs support voluntary and community groups in and around the Borough of Rushmoor in recruiting volunteers. Check out more at rvs.org.uk.

Woking Association of Voluntary Service (WAVS), who take care of Woking and the surrounding areas, have a document on their website that is updated weekly – and is 50 pages long at the time of going to press. See it and find out more at wavsonline.co.uk. So you see there’s always a huge amount volunteer work out there – and that’s just three centres! Be sure to check out other centres near where you are.

T’is Always the Season… And we apologise bringing something vaguely Christmassy to you in August, but the time of year is often important to charities. National Volunteer Week takes place in June, so it’s easy to get involved just then and then forget about it for the year. Moreover, as we’re in the summer, it’s easy to get consider certain charities and neglect others. Jess Hogan-Smith of VASWS told us that: “August is a mixed bag. You have a lot of students on summer holidays which is good, and also corporations will show a lot of interest in volunteering for team-building purposes.” However while this is unquestionably a good thing, we mustn’t forget that it’s easier to volunteer in fair weather than the colder months. “Winter is particularly important for the elderly and those with mental health issues” says Jess. “While somewhere like the National Trust needs volunteers in the summer at its busiest.” So when those lovely properties and green spaces of Surrey are shut down for the season, just consider who else might value your time…

What if there were No Volunteers for a Week? Floods, famine and plague. OK, that’s a bit extreme but without people freely giving their time to help others, many aspects of everyday life and some key support services would be severely impacted. Voluntary Action South West Surrey asked local charitable organisations what the effect would be if they did not have their volunteers for one week. The following responses are typical: Parity for Disability Provides services for people with multiple disabilities, their families and carers. Number of volunteers: 93 Effect of No Volunteers: “The services would not exist. Without volunteers we would not be able to operate our charity shops which raise a significant part of the £60,000 we need each year to cover costs. Volunteers also ensure that the charity’s fundraising events can take place. Without an IT volunteer maintaining the day service and office computers these wouldn’t be effective.”

The Guildford Talking Newspaper Number of volunteers: 35 Effect of No Volunteers: “There would be no Talking Newspaper for our blind and visually impaired readers to listen to. This would affect about 95 people.”

Why Volunteer? To meet people and make new friends To improve your C.V. and work prospects. To be part of your community.

SATRO An educational charity working with young people in SE England providing real life experience of all aspects of the working world through a diverse and challenging range of programmes. Number of volunteers: 850 Effect of No Volunteers: “We quite simply would not be able to run these events. Volunteers help run the games and activities and share their business knowledge which is invaluable to the students. This would impact approximately 556 students per week.”

Royal Voluntary Service Meals on Wheels in Waverley Number of volunteers: 250

To learn new skills To enjoy yourself!

Effect of No Volunteers: “If an older person has no other means of getting food then they will quickly become malnourished which could lead to illness. The volunteer delivering the meal could be the only visitor a housebound elderly person gets during the day. There are about 150 recipients in Waverley of this service.” And these are just local services - if organisations simply had no volunteer help then the apocalyptic scenario creeps nearer. Landfill sites and fly-tipping in every neighbourhood, a fully privatised NHS, the Surrey Hills covered in Japanese knotweed, lives lost on waterways and at sea, more crime, lower literacy – the list is endless.

REACH FOR THE SKY

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s Elevate! If your eyes have been on the skies in Surrey recently, then you may have noticed an altogether extraordinary sight. Head honchos of the horizon flying cam are keen and eager entrepreneurs Dan James and Tomas Valigura. Having had their ‘lightbulb’ moment, the team at Elevate set about capturing our amazing county via a view point that as residents is a wholly new one to us. So many sights in Surrey are instantly recognisable to us…on foot. Yet send a drone into the

clouds, accompanied by a camera and this is what you get. Moments of epic beauty; our immediate landscapes transposed into scenes similar to that from the movies. Elevate are transforming aerial photography on our very doorstep. Elevate have also been commissioned to survey construction and building sites, and have featured in local and national news for their work capturing such events as expansive fire damage to local areas of conservation. Elevate hold full Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) permission for aerial operations, along with all the necessary qualifications and insurance.

SPREADING WINGS S900 Highly portable, powerful aerial system capable of filming in 4K resolution or full HD up to 96FPS. Carrying the highly versatile Panasonic GH4, this machine really packs a punch.

HISTORY YOU HAVE BEEN WARENNED

We’re a big, lovely community in Surrey. We know one another and there are even some well-known families in the county. Now while your average Surreyites can name a few families who are most certainly not card-carrying-membersof-the-caravan-club, back in the day the most powerful and minted family in the county were the Warenne family. While all the family had their interesting parlour games the 7th Earl of Surrey, John Warenne, was an especially interesting guy. Back in 1287 John’s dad kicked the chamber-maid’s bucket, leaving him as one of the leading Barons in the land at what was a pretty crap time during the reign of Edward II. Edward was gay in a time way before everyone’s profile picture was all rainbow and had an open-secret love affair with a chap called Piers Gaveston. Now, what’s important here is the content of Piers’ character not his sexuality: He was a d*ck. He spent all day slagging everyone down in Latin and not really playing the court game. Our boy John was the butt of a lot of Piers’ bitchiness but being a good Surrey guy he stayed out of it and drank Starbucks. Thing

was, when it came to managing the country, Edward couldn’t pour water out of a boot with instructions on the heel. That coupled with his boyfriend being a complete douche meant that in around 1311 the Barons got together and demanded Ed sent his boy packing to France. Edward refused, because he was the King and **** them, that’s why. So the Barons decided to send Johnboy to grip Piers, and get him to France. Gaveston was in Scarborough Castle, and Johnboy rucked up swearing on the Bible that no harm would come of him if he just came along quietly and p*ssed off to France. Now, in those days, swearing on the Bible was absolutely sacrosanct; you made that sort of oath you NEVER went back on it. Piers relented and they headed south to London, because Piers forgot his socks and needed to pick up some bits before heading to the coast. They stopped in Deddington, Oxfordshire for a Little Chef when they bumped into the Earl of Lancaster, the Earl of Warwick and their men, nasty guys with missing teeth and sharp, pointy things hanging all over them.

with a bad taste in their mouths and hair full of Cerebro-Spinal Fluid. Meanwhile, back in court, Edward collapsed in tears and spent the next six months listen to Adele. John was fuming, so started a private war against Lancaster. As always, the feud cost hundreds of lives - no one important mind, just people like you and I - and finally ended when Lancaster was caught by a Sun reporter doing arms deals with the Scots. Bang to rights, Lancaster ended up on trial and our guy John got to have the satisfaction of sitting as a Judge at his trial. Having seen John on the judging panel, Lancaster’s diary vividly captures his true feelings:

Everyone was left with a bad taste in their mouths and hair full of Cerebro-Spinal Fluid

“Oh, cock.” John’s diary was equally frank: “Jackpot”

John was pushed to one side and held back. Lancaster gripped Gaveston, slapped him about a bit and then started hacking at him with a sword until Piers was dead. Well he was either dead or very, very calm. Understandably John went thermonuclear, Lancaster told him to “deal with, player” and everyone was left

Lancaster was introduced to the sharp end of something with an 18 certificate and our John retired to his estates. He had no heirs though, because although he had shed loads of kids, none of them were legitimate. Lad.

TALKING TO... MUNGO JERRY

By Alex D’Arcy

H

e’s the man behind one of the most instantly recognisable songs on the planet; the hot season’s equivalent to Merry Christmas. We caught up with the legend that is Mungo Jerry to talk about his anthem ‘In the Summertime’ ahead of his performance at Weyfest this September.

IT HAS BEEN 45 YEARS SINCE YOUR ANTHEM IN THE SUMMERTIME WAS RELEASED ... ARE YOU ABLE TO REMEMBER WHEN THE INCEPTION OF THAT SONG WAS MADE? WHERE WERE YOU? WHAT WERE YOU DOING ? Well I was 21 and I borrowed the money to buy this second hand guitar. I fully remember I got this tune in my head and the next day it was buzzing around and I sat down where I was working; it was in a research laboratory for Timex doing all the electronics and stuff. I had never considered being a professional singer or songwriter but I had been messing around since the age of 10 with various guitars... So I had this tune in my head (dada dada da da dada da dada) and all the words just came out. When you analyse it retrospectively, it’s been said to me it’s like a celebration of life and

after all these years, when you take every line out it’s all got a significant meaning; sometimes a double meaning and it’s gone all around the world and changed a lot of people’s lives. There’s been so many different cover versions of it in different genres of music. When I recorded it, I was playing a mixture of Woodie Guthrie, Leadbelly, rural blues, junk-band style stuff, skiffle, rockabilly - minus any drums. That wasn’t engineered. When I was working at Timex a friend of mine there, Joe Rush, played double bass and always said that he wanted to play the washboard. I think he used to play for Ken Collier and Joe used to do a lot of weekend gigs and functions. At that time I was playing in my psychedelic rock band messing around. Anyway we saw this audition in the Melody Maker advertised and the guy running the audition was an American by the name of Jimmy Miller, who went onto become the producer for Rolling Stones. At that time he was producing Jimmy Cliff and they were auditioning for a backing band for Jackie Edwards (another guy from Jamaica) who wrote ‘Keep on Running’. He had a number of hits in Jamaica and was on the Island Record Label. They wanted to bring him over here to do some gigs. Gino Washington was really popular back then and was being played in all the mod clubs they were starting to get into all this soul music, Otis Reading, Wilson Pickett etc. So whenever we tried to get a gig all the promoters wanted to know was “have you got a brass section? Have you got an organ?” (To meet that demand ) we were messing about and for a joke we would do this brass organ medley which was essentially a 10 minute version of ‘Uptight’ by Stevie Wonder and a few extras, maybe ‘Knock on Wood’… whatever I had in my head. So we played that for our audition and they went mad for it. So we got the job backing Jackie Edwards and we were playing all these afro-Caribbean clubs. Our drummer eventually left to join Savoy Brown and so the bass player also left.

up shutting the power down at 4am. And that’s how it all started. In the Summertime was written shortly after that.

AM I RIGHT IN THINKING THAT YOU USED TO LIVE IN THE FARNHAM AREA? WHAT MEMORIES DO YOU HAVE OF THE AREA ? I used to live in Grayshott for many years. I had a studio there and quite a massive house that needed a lot of work. In fact in that that studio I recorded an album. One day Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac) and (the sadly departed) Vincent Crane (Atomic Rooster and Crazy World of Arthur Brown) came down and we did all this jamming, recorded it and did this weird album called ‘A Case of the Blues’. I moved from Grayshott into Farnham (originally the end of 1974). We did a lot of walking with the dogs on the commons over there and I loved it.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PAST TIME IN THE SUMMERTIME? I like chilling. I’ve got a little speed boat and when I get a chance I just go out and enjoy chilling. I like looking at the clouds and the sky and watching the words go by and just enjoying the scenery. It’s all about enjoying what is natural… nature!

I had one gig left in my diary and Joe Rush had found out that you could still get washboards in Scotland. Joe got these two washboards brought down from Scotland and had them in the Timex lab. He told me to get the guitar out and we just started having this skiffle jam in the lab. A few of our colleagues gathered round and eventually we ended up taking the session down the pub. We thought it sounded great. We thought “what could we do?” - We needed to play this gig and we needed the money. I think it was about £30 back then which was a lot. So we played first at this gig to warm the crowd up. We did all this stomping with our feet on the floor because we didn’t have a drummer and they loved it. After the gig had finished they asked us to go back on again and they ended

TALKING TO

ANNABEL ALLUM ANNABEL - “Tendency to wear more than two shirts at once / Not your average teenage girl / Old jeans. Sincerity / Lyrically intwining themes of youthfulness and romance / Kid. Streetwise”

For those that don’t know who are you? My name is Annabel Allum. I sing and play guitar, gig and write music. Yeah that’s what I do. I write music. I grew up in and around Farnborough and Farnham way and then I came to Guildford to study at the ACM.

How would you describe your music? I’d say dreamy, a bit grungy. It’s quite emotional. My music’s very much about off lifting my thoughts. It’s very much a therapy for me. It’s about connecting with people and sharing experiences and sharing personal stories.

When did you start playing music? About four years ago I started teaching myself to play the guitar. I’ve always been singing and always been doing stuff in school plays, but yeah, the guitar part only four years ago. I started writing songs from that and started developing and started to play gigs.

You have a unique sound... I’ve never wanted to give people something on a plate. I like the idea of people making up their own minds about what I’m saying. I really enjoying twisting vowels and messing around with the way things sound.

What’s the creative process, how do you go about laying down a track? It really varies from song to song. Sometimes I’ll just be walking along the street and I’ll think of something and record it on my phone and then I’ll go and figure out the guitar later. But mostly I’ll just be sat twinkling and it’ll just come from that. I never try and push a song it just unravels itself.

Influences music and worldly? Musically I’m into so much. I really enjoy PJ Harvey, Policia, I really like Slow Dive, anything dreamy or shoe-gaze. Worldly influences? Even just walking down the street. My brain tends to think in metaphors and I’ll see something and think “oh that means this”. Every day influences me, I’m always writing things in my notebook and then taking those ideas to use in songs.

Favourite summer past time when you’re not making music? I really enjoy just sitting in fields with my friends like any other normal 19 year old. I enjoy the sun. I’m a big fan of the Vitamin D and getting natural happiness from that. I love going to gigs and travelling to random places around the country just to see what’s there.

Recommendation, hang out wise in the Guildford area... The Boileroom in Guildford definitely. They’ve always got something going on and not just music. They’ve got a craft club and have now opened up a tattoo parlour and t-shirt pressing which is wicked. I enjoy coffee shops. I go to Coffee Culture (in Guildford) which is independent. They do soya milk which is great and they have a snickers latte which is even better. And down by the river (Wey), it’s just beautiful.

What’s on your speakers right now? I went to Ben’s Collectors Records the other day and bought a first pressing of Bob Dylan’s ‘Self Portrait’ which I’ve been listening to a lot.

What’s next for you? What plans are there for your music? I’m releasing a four track EP on the 10th August. It’s going to be a co-release with Propriety Records and Till Death Do Us Party. So at the moment I’m focussing on that and getting that out there.

AUGUST 2015

Talking to: Jim Al-Khalili Jim Al-Khalili is one of the most recognisable faces in UK science and a tireless educator. Through television, books and radio he reveals the mysteries of the universe, exploring quantum space and the subatomic world in a way that makes these dense topics accessible to the public. We spoke to the University of Surrey professor of physics and professor of the public engagement in science during a rare break in his busy schedule… WAS THERE A PIVOTAL MOMENT THAT SET YOU ON THE SCIENTIFIC PATH? I was always interested in puzzle solving and thinking about the big questions. I have a brother two years younger than me and he was more the geeky scientist. When I was about 12 years old I was interested in football, music and had perhaps an unhealthily early interest in girls while he had the telescope and could name all the dinosaurs. But around the age of thirteen I did particularly well in a physics class test. I remember the teacher getting me in front of the class and, rather than feeling embarrassed, I felt rather pleased with myself. I thought physics is rather easy, almost common sense with a bit of maths and problem solving thrown in. And I appreciated that physics would be the subject that could address the big, profound issues: does the universe go on forever, what does time mean etc. I didn’t give up girls and

football, though!

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THEORETICAL PHYSICS? As an undergraduate, I did a year working in a lab in Leatherhead, fiddling with dials and instruments. But I much preferred the computer programming and the maths than messing around with kit. I loved messing about with equations, working through complicated algebra to arrive at something beautiful and simple. To appreciate the beauty of the maths that tells you something about the real world, that to me was profound.

By Rich Lee our students are the wrong thing: an atom is not a miniature solar system, a little ball with tinier balls - electrons whizzing around it. And yet, sometimes, that is the way to visualise it. In scientific papers we’ll draw diagrams of ‘ball’s bouncing into other balls, even though that’s not what goes on in the quantum world. But what I’m visualising is graphs; curves; mathematical quantities that are changing in size. I’m imagining numbers getting larger, curves following different paths. It’s something that takes a while to get used to and only comes with years of practise. Really, at some point in theoretical physics you do have to get into the mathematics.

OBVIOUSLY, THE MAIN OBSTACLE TO PEOPLE’S COMPREHENSION OF THE QUANTUM WORLD IS THE FACT THAT IT CAN’T BE SEEN. BUT WHAT DO YOU ‘SEE’ WHEN YOU IMAGINE THINGS AT THE SCALE OF PARTICLES?

WHAT DID RICHARD FEYNMAN MEAN WHEN HE MADE THE WELLKNOWN QUOTE: ‘IF YOU THINK YOU UNDERSTAND QUANTUM MECHANICS, YOU DON’T’?

Sometimes I do visualise pictures. But they’re the sort of pictures we tell

It was probably Niels Bohr who said it, but a lot agree that that’s true. But he

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment

means that if you try to think about Quantum Mechanics through common sense or intuition, if you imagine an atom here and what happens to it a moment later, you’ll be wrong. Because atoms don’t behave according to sensible, everyday experience that we’re familiar with. You have to give up. Quantum Mechanics is counterintuitive, but it is astonishing.

EXPERIMENTS LIKE CERN AND THE LARGE HADRON COLLIDER ARE ASTONISHING ACHIEVEMENTS WITH INCREDIBLE POTENTIAL FOR HUMAN UNDERSTANDING. BUT WHAT TANGIBLE BENEFITS COULD THEY ACTUALLY BRING US BEYOND SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE? I think it’s true that if you’re spending billions on one experiment then that’s billions of research funding you can’t put into, say, cancer research. But the point is it should not be one to the exclusion of another. These projects are still a tiny fraction of what we spend on other really ‘useless’ things. It’s in our nature as humans to want to understand the mysteries of the universe, so it’s always money well spent. And also, you don’t know what the surprising discoveries that will be made. Without CERN there would be no world wide web - which has sort of been helpful, hasn’t it.

‘town and gown’ relationship; it could be so much healthier if there were a closer partnership than there already is.

WAS YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING A PUBLIC EDUCATOR ON SCIENCE AN ORGANIC ONE OR WAS IT PLANNED? There was never a grand plan. It was very much having done one thing, it led naturally to something else. I gave school lectures, they were recognised and they led to a series of lectures around the country. I was then commissioned to write my first book on black holes. You write the first, it’s easier to write your second one, and then gradually move into TV. And about ten years ago, I’d reached the point where I had the right balance; half of my time as an academic - teaching and research - and the other time a public educator and broadcaster.

YOU BECAME PRESIDENT OF THE BRITISH HUMANIST ASSOCIATION IN 2012. HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR ROLE AS A FIGUREHEAD FOR RATIONALISM? I think what it means is that I have to be empathic to the situation that I’m

persuade them of the ‘wrongness of their ways’. That sort of argument isn’t going to be won, nor should it be fought. I have to be prepared to talk to -and engage on a friendly basispeople that I don’t agree with.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SCIENCE EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS IN 2015? I think there’s a way to go. Things are changing, for example what’s coming to England and Wales is that everyone will need to some form of maths until the age of eighteen. I hope they’ll have to do some form of science until they’re eighteen as well. We need a better informed, scientifically literate public and I don’t think that’s happened yet.

WHEN WILL WE NEXT SEE YOU ON OUR SCREENS? Well, we’ve recorded a pilot for a new BBC2 quiz show called Six Degrees, which Professor Brian Cox will be hosting. A bit like the new Qi. There will be panels with resident experts like myself and Steve Jones, geneticist at UCL. We’ll have comedians like Ben Miller and science presenters like Alice Roberts as well. A bit of banter, a bit of mickey-taking. But it’s a pilot and so if the networks like it and it goes down well with viewers there’ll be a series.

“It’s in our nature as humans to want to understand the mysteries of the universe”

YOU’VE STUDIED AND LECTURED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SURREY SINCE 1982. YOU MUST HAVE SEEN SO MUCH CHANGE HERE DURING THAT TIME?

I’ve certainly seen a lot of change since I started here as an undergraduate. It’s been incredible to see how the University has transformed itself; we’re number four in the Guardian tables now. A regret I have is that we still don’t have a strong enough relationship with the town of Guildford. It’s a shame. I’d like to think Guildford would be proud of the university. We’re not in the city, but not that far away. But this so called

in. I will defend Richard Dawkins to the hilt if people say he’s a ‘militant atheist’. There’s no such thing in the same way that no way is a vicar on a Sunday morning a militant Christian. If you believe in what you believe in you should have a right to say so without people saying you’re getting up there nose. But on the other hand there are a lot of people I know, including my mother, for whom their faith is very important to them. And while I won’t agree with them, I don’t feel like it’s my job to

FINALLY, WHAT’S THE NEXT BIG THING TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN SCIENCE?

I would like to think it will be discovering dark matter and what it’s made of. That could be seeing up into space, capturing those particles from space or making them from scratch in the Large Hadron Collider. In my novel that I’m keen on writing, dark matter plays a role in there, I’ve already speculated on what it will be and what it will be used for but I won’t say anything more than that just yet!

What About Watts?

The Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village in Compton has been one of the county’s most famous cultural landmarks for over a century. Find out more about this unique arts heritage site, steeped in history and arts & crafts charm...

WATTS GALLERY - A Brief History The Watts Gallery’s founders – the eponymous Victorian artists George and Mary Seton Watts – established the venue following the former’s death in 1904, initially as a means to display the former’s pieces. Having been described as Britain’s Michaelangelo, George F. Watts was a prominent figure in the late nineteenth century’s Symbolic art movement and the famous creator of allegorical works such as Hope, Love and Life. As George himself said, “I paint ideas, not things”. In stark contrast to the overriding coldness and conservatism of the Victorian aristocracy, both George and Mary possessed an acute desire for social reform, which was often purveyed through their work. With this socially conscious approach to art, George developed a philosophy through his work that he felt could change people’s opinions and lives. Both held a strong belief that art should be universal and accessible to all - reflected in this project and in his support of schemes that took art into the poor areas of London through exhibitions and the creation of new galleries. This ethos is still

warmly held in the heart of the gallery today; as Mary once said, “It is a curious mystery how strong the similarity is between Love & Art.” Indeed, it was love that kept the gallery from disappearing altogether. Between 2006 and 2008 there were fears the gallery would have to close due to the dire state of the building, so in turn The Hope Appeal was set up. Named after one of Watts’ most famous paintings, the trust began a huge refurbishment campaign to save the gallery. By 2011 the Hope Appeal had raised over £10 million and after a ma jor restoration project was completed that year. Now, visitors can again experience over 100 stunning artworks – including some of Watts’ most stunning pieces - whilst wandering through the atmospheric historic galleries with their restored decorative schemes. Fast forward to 2015 and the gallery is thriving more than ever. With a wide range of wonderful events throughout the month and, in our humble opinion, one of the best tea shops around, there’s always a reason to pay the Watts Gallery a visit.

Perdita has been Director of Watts Gallery since 2004, when first appointed to lead the Hope project and is now leading the way for the recreation of the Artists’ Village with the restoration of Watts Studios and Limnerslease. Perdita says, “I am deeply grateful to receive this Honour on behalf of Watts Gallery –Artists’ Village and for Services to the Arts. I could not have achieved this without the tremendous support, generosity and selfless commitment of so many people – the staff team, Trustees, volunteers, benefactors, the Heritage Lottery Fund, mentors, friends and my family. “Bringing back the vision and the legacy of G F and M S Watts in a hollow of the Surrey Hills has been a privilege and I hope that in opening the Watts Studios later this year, the Artists’ Village will be enjoyed as a destination of national, if not international importance, by present and future generations.”

THE GUILDFORD LIDO Open Air Cinema Returns

After a hugely successful debut in 2014, the Lido Open Air Cinema is back on the 22nd & 23rd August… The cinema combined with the outdoors is undoubtedly one of life’s great joys, dearest reader. Combining a cinematic adventure with nature – or more specifically a ruddy great big outdoor swimming pool – and adding a splash of sunshine? Well, that’s a beat we can all dance to. Most of you will be very aware of the joy that is Guildford’s Lido. Having opened way back in 1933, chances are that any Surrey-dwelling parents and grandparents enjoyed it too. Set in beautifully landscaped gardens and heated to a perfect 24 degrees centigrade, this Olympic sized pool is a great place to chill out, meet friends, picnic and, of course, do some serious swimming (NB not necessarily serious). What was not around in 1933 was the three new and exciting slides, as well as the newly refurbished paddling pool with interactive toys and a mini-slide for younger swimmers. This season, you lucky attendees will also be able to ride the Multi-slide which has two lanes side-byside so two people can race themselves to see who’s the fastest - and if you’re brave enough, you can take on the Kamikaze too. But this is about films folks, and Saturday 22nd August sees Mamma Mia (rated PG) grace the big screen on the big lawn next to the big pool. This is the story of a bride-to-be trying to find her real father told using hit songs by the popular ‘70s

group ABBA. Meryl Streep? Pierce Brosnan? Colin Firth? Quite the line-up of actors. This mega-hit of a film will see you singing along camply to one of the most feelygoody movies ever. We dare you to try and not wail along. Sunday 23rd August is a rather more dramatic affair, for upon the big screen will air one of the scariest, most entertaining and downright best thrillers there ever was – Jaws (rated PG). The 1975 classic will be airing in its 40th anniversary year, and we expect all of you to eye the pool with suspicion at least once while the Great White terrorises Amity Island. One of Spielberg’s first and very best. Altogether now - Duuuuuh Dum. Duuuh Dum. Dumdumdumdumdumdumdumdum… So how will the evening pan out? Well swimming will take place from 7pm – 8pm, so you can get all the excitement out of your system before the film screening, which will commence at 8.30pm. There will be a bar open and the incredible Burrito Loco will be selling you some of their delicious burritos, tacos and nachos from their Lido Shack. Good grief these are going to be some fun nights… Standard tickets will be £10, or should you want a deckchair then it’ll be £12. A night of al fresco on a (hopefully) warm summer’s eve? We think this is an absolute winner.

WHERE TO EAT: The Hurtwood Inn

“ By Rich Lee Nestled in the beauty of the Surrey Hills, the Hurtwood Inn is both a great escape and a hidden gem, cooking some of the finest Italian cuisine around…

Staring out of the restaurant window, watching the sporadic blur of coloured lycra whisk by, not for the first time do I consider buying a bike. The cyclists that descend on the Surrey Hills surrounding Peaslake every summer certainly seem to have the area, with its leafy country lanes and stunning vistas, all to themselves. And with the Hurtwood Inn as their de facto pit stop and second home it’s easy to want to join them. But then I remember how I feel about such exertion (and lycra) and return my attention to the Hurtwood Inn’s dining room instead.

meet whitewashed walls spotted with subtle artistic touches- they manage to be quite distinct experiences from one another. The restaurant in particular, with its centrepiece of flowers and gleaming chandelier has an understated kind of grandeur that promises, at first sight, to turn a simple meal out into a real event. As it turns out, it delivers one too.

retirement by the challenge of opening a new establishment, they saw the tired old Hurtwood Inn as their chance to pour their talents and passion for Italian food into a venue tucked away from the kerfuffle of town life. They make charming hosts, of course. Where Roberto is by turns as smooth and intense as a cup of cortado, Lorenzo is warm and mellow like a latte, while restaurant manager Christine, who’s now as native to these Hills as a Frenchwoman can get, is all effortless charm and friendly welcome. And then there’s their wild kitchen savant, Head Chef Silvano Mazzoli, who can be heard cavorting exuberantly around his domain through the open kitchen doors in between turning out, as it transpires, some of the best Italian food we’ve experienced for this column yet.

“This is the kind of feast that has you plotting return trips before you’ve even finished the first plate.”

We take pubs with a side order of restaurant almost for granted these days, at venues where the bar segues naturally, often imperceptibly, into the dining room. Not so at the Hurtwood Inn: here is the bar, there is the restaurant. And while they share the same bright, clean, airy simplicity throughout - where soft wood panels

It’s evident that the rejuvenated Hurtwood Inn’s new lease of life came last year at the hands of some particularly seasoned pros, and they don’t come more seasoned than business partners Roberto Gardetto and Lorenzo Castigliano, two restaurant maestros who once ruled the Guildford dining scene in the heyday of their former establishments Cambio and Bar Centro. Lured back from semi-

pub fair, the star attraction of the restaurant has to be the tasting menu. Ours began with an elegant trio of starters: a pearly, plump scallop in the shell, dusted with herby breadcrumbs, and a lusciously tender tumble of peppery Angus beef carpaccio

humming with truffle essence. Between these, a simple white cup held a tomato and basil soup that was -I kid you not- like drinking a draft of rich Tuscan sunshine. We smelled the parmesan before we saw the next dish: a huge, happy waft of cheese preceding pillows of silky ravioli, stuffed with a velvety smooth filling of nettles and given the sweet kiss of garlic and astringent tang of sage. You can eat your way through a great many high street Italian restaurants until you find pasta given this much love and care. Which would have been a depressing thought to dwell upon if I hadn’t been having such a good time. Another trio arrived shortly after: a delicate fillet of seabream came scaled in a genius potato skin, the filament thin golden potato scales adding an extra layer of crisp texture to the fish and the sweet soft peppers beneath. From surf to turf by way of some herb scattered roast spuds, and a dish of chicken was lifted to something quite extraordinary thanks to the forest flavours of wild mushrooms and more of that truffle infusing the kind of creamy, glossy sauce that dreams are made of. So far, so very sumptuous, and yet desserts took it even further with a juicy baked peach crowned with a light milk gelato, a dangerously decadent triangle of chocolate mousse and a semifreddo amaretto that was crisp and soft and all kinds of ‘more please’. Lavish without being overwhelming, the Hurtwood Inn’s tasting menu, at only £31.50 a person, is the kind of feast that has you plotting return trips before you’ve even finished the first plate.

you super well. It may be a little out of the way for us town-bound types but that shouldn’t stop us from experiencing what amounts to an authentic corner of Italy up in them thar Surrey Hills.

BBQ CHAMP FILMS AT THE WINDMILL, EWHURST

Last month, the sizzling new ITV series BBQ Champ filmed its final episode at one of the Surrey Hill’s favourite pub restaurants, the Windmill in Ewhurst. With the first episode screening on ITV on the 31st July, the five part series finale shot at the celebrated Surrey gastropub shows this August Bank Holiday. The programme features Man vs Food star Adam Richman and British chef and restaurateur Mark Blatchford as judges with Myleene Klass as the show’s host. A team of eight contenders from across the country compete against each other to become the first BBQ Champ. Each week, a team of eight contenders prove themselves in challenges that sort the BBQ champs from the BBQ chumps. From creating mouth-watering BBQ masterpieces to reinventing culinary classics for the coals and catering for the masses, each contestant will have to try their best to win Adam and Mark’s approval, and win the top prize of £25,000. “The winner of this show needs to have technique, originality and a distinct skill set to cook on the BBQ,” explains Adam Richman. “They must never lose their joy or passion in the service of that technique either. I don’t want to find someone doing their best imitation of a Nashville BBQ. I can go to Nashville to have that. We want to find the UK’s best barbecue chef who has their own identity and a desire to keep on getting better. “In America we have a preconception of cooking on a BBQ,” he reveals. “The battle lines are drawn. We know what we will get in Texas and California. In the UK you embrace it all. The way you guys treat soccer, we treat the BBQ. And the way we treat soccer in the States is how you treat the BBQ.”

BBQ Champ first airs on Fridays at 9pm on ITV with the finale at the Windmill screening Friday 28th August. For more about the Windmill in Ewhurst visit gastrowindmill.com

Skewers aren’t just the ultimate finger food for parties and barbecues, they’re also the most versatile. Take a few ingredients that dance well with each other, thread them together and you’re good to go. There’s also something deliciously primal about ripping food off a stick with your teeth that we really kind of like. But for a lighter, seasonal alternative, these summer kebabs offer mouth-watering flavours and a big hit of colour - perfect for entertaining while the sun’s shining…

MUM’s the word: MAKING IT BETTER THIS SUMMER

Ali McClure is our local Education and Parenting Expert. She helps busy parents & teachers get the very best from their children. As author of MAKING IT BETTER FOR BOYS and mum of 3 teenage boys she has survived many a summer keeping her kids entertained. With six long weeks ahead of us let’s see what exciting things we can discover. Whatever your challenge, whatever their age, Ali has a solution! FED UP WITH THE SAME OLD THINGS TO DO? Learn to re-love what you’ve got. Have you used the scooters, the old boat in the garage, made a Den in your favourite woodland or used the old playhouse? Look after your friend’s children for a couple of days and enjoy showing them the exciting things you have that you had almost forgotten about. Not everyone has a tree house…what could it be today, could we sleep out in it? Get another trusted adult involved, an Uncle, a local trusted

teenager. Boys especially need good role models. BICKERING SIBLINGS? GLUED TO SCREENS? NOT LISTEN TO MUM? Boys especially get sucked into screens and one main reason is it lets them feel in control. If we give them constant criticism and instruction they soon switch off. Let each child be leader for a day; let them plan ahead what the family will do, where they will go, with or without a budget. Let them be chef for a day. They love planning the food and don’t be tempted to step in. Let them plan it, prepare it and enjoy the comments as you enjoy the fruits of their labour. Paper plates for a day don’t hurt either! ARE YOU EXHAUSTED? FED UP OF ENTERTAINING YOUR CHILDREN 24/7? Give your kids away! Remember when you had other children to your house? Trade with a friend and take a well- deserved pause for you. We all need to recharge our batteries and in the summer holidays we rarely do. The other thing that is so important is to have a one to one day with each of your children. You will have so many fewer stressful times if you have had a day where they get to choose what

you do. One to one you really get to relax, away from the busy-ness and know what really makes them tick. DO YOUR KIDS THINK ONLY OF THEMSELVES? OF COURSE THEY DO THEY ARE CHILDREN… Help them to plan a day; a treat, an afternoon tea for a grandparent, a family friend, an elderly neighbour… a lovely thing to do any time of the year. Exhausted all your ideas? Get lost! Children love adventure and it is easier than you think. You will need to plan a little but it is as simple as getting on a local bus or train, to a place you have never been before and finding your way home. A picnic, water and a paper map are a good idea but you will be amazed what fabulous places and adventures we have on our doorstep. Enjoy your kids this summer and if you want to know more go to alimcclure.co.uk or come along to

‘MAKING IT BETTER FOR BOYS… What makes them tick?’ at Harris + Hoole, North Street, Guildford on Friday 25th September.

MUM’S THE WORD

By Jasmine Ellis

BOOKS: YOU’VE GOT ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD Your summer reading list almost doesn’t bear thinking about. Is there really enough time for such an accumulation of wondrous books to be read, studied, (reread) and raved about, with only a month left? Maybe not, but enjoying books needn’t stop at self-imposed hibernation at home – get out and about and join a local library book group, gathering or one-off talk on the latest and greatest reads! Currently, Surrey’s community conscious of reading groups and promoting discussions of literature; over 700 reading groups in Surrey are supported by Surrey libraries. But whatever the reason for your need to read, there are many little-known regular turn-outs that must grow if we are to ever get to the bottom of that summer reading pile!

WATERSTONES Did you make it to the Guildford, Woking and Godalming ‘Go Set a Watchman’ reading groups, celebrating the publication of Harper Lee’s momentous second novel? If you didn’t, worry not! Waterstones seem to be on the verge of setting up book groups, such as in Camberley and you can check their events pages for this August – how about it? They’re sure to get you falling in love with books once more…

GUILDFORD BOOK GROUP & THE GUILDFORD INSTITUTE Guildford Book Group are an easy-going bunch of bookworms, who meet in the town centre once a month. All’s fair with these guys - the books are chosen by a vote, from nominations by the members and you can share your favourite book, or simply the one you’re currently reading with other people, with no worries! Likewise, the avid readers of the Guildford Institute’s library welcome all on a Monday evening! For more info visit meetup.com and guildford-institute.org.uk

Farnham residents are lucky members, being so close to the heart of art and the community created by this organisation. Missed the Book Fair on 19th July? Well don’t neglect their book group the rest of this summer season!

THE LIBERATORS AT CRANLEIGH LIBRARY This one’s for the young bookworms; year 7s and 8s, whether they be book-lovers or book-seekers, can rock up to talk about their favourite books. They’ll even be quizzes (!) Find out more at surreycc.gov.uk

Go Set a Watchman Harper Lee Have you read it yet? Be reunited with Scout Finch’s life in Maycomb and her enthralling narrative, all grown up, in a sequel raising all sorts of questions the world over...

GUILDFORD BOOK FESTIVAL AND YOU Of course there are lots more local book groups, perhaps off the radar. Once you’ve joined one or set up your own, think about looking ahead to the GBF (11th – 18th October) and their call to bookworms: a special ticket deal for registered book clubs! You and your group of fellow bibliophiles can get involved in this key cultural event for less – and trust us, you do not want to miss Reader’s Day!

Did you know... Surrey is steeped in literary history; next time you’re out for a walk or in a park with a brick of a novel, remember that this is where the greats walked... where will you find inspiration? • Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the Deputy-Lieutenant of Surrey circa 1900! • Lewis Carroll himself never actually lived in Guildford... • Jane Austen is likely to have modelled the fictional Highbury in Emma on Great Bookham, though others believe it was Cobham! • HG Wells moved to Woking in 1895 and in that time wrote not only The War of the Worlds but also The Invisible Man! • Charles Dickens and his wife often stayed at the Star and Garter Hotel on Richmond Hill in March 1838...

National Citizen Service

UK charity The Challenge provides young adults with key life skills courtesy of this brilliant programme… Even in an area as fortunate and affluent as Surrey, young adults have some notable hurdles to jump. With education finishing and adulthood on the horizon, it can be a struggle to adapt to the way the world changes. Luckily programmes such as the National Citizen Service is there to help young people gain these key work and life skills. The programme – for young people aged 15 to 17 – is a huge opportunity for personal growth. NCS brings young people together from all different backgrounds in a common purpose and by offering new experiences. It gives them the chance to take on new challenges, learn new skills and meet new people. This helps discover their own talents and realise their potential whilst having fun. One Poll study in April 2015 revealed that many teachers believe young people who try something new during the holidays return to school or college with a more positive and focused attitude for the next academic year. So the NCS is undoubtedly a wonderful way to engage youngsters.

But how does it work? NCS takes place outside of term time in spring, summer and autumn – each one is a little different but equally amazing. There are plenty of dates to choose from so there’s nothing standing in between you and the awesomeness of NCS.

PHASE 1: ADVENTURE In your first week you’ll live with your team at an outdoor activity centre, getting to know each other and experiencing the freedom of being away from home with new friends. So, once you’ve decided on the programme for you, you’ll be placed in a group of 12-15 amazing people and the best thing about NCS is that these will be people you’d never have met before – people that could change your life, or you could change theirs. In this week you’ll get the chance to take part in adrenalinefuelled activities with your team mates like: rock climbing, canoeing, hiking and archery.

PHASE 2: THE FUTURE Not only will you be learning to cook for yourselves (think roast dinners, not beans on toast!), but you’ll also learn some huge life skills that make for a killer CV. You could find yourself meeting organisations and important people from your local community, whilst learning about the issues facing them, as well as developing new personal skills (teamwork, leadership and communication). You could also find out more about skills you have a passion for, such as photography, editing, football coaching or even how to set up your own business!

PHASE 3: MAKING A DIFFERENCE Now you get the chance to put all the skills and experiences you’ve learnt into practice as a team agreeing on a social action project that will really make a mark on your local community. You and your team have the power to change the world around you given the respect, tools and opportunities to do so. This is your chance to be part of something amazing - plan your own project, fundraise for it and make it happen! Go out there and be awesome together.

PHASE 4: GRADUATION Once you’ve completed the programme, you’re now part of the bigger NCS family. National Citizen Service grads have the chance to attend some of the greatest shows and events going and they’ll be constantly developing amazing ways to keep you involved with them, your community & with all of their fantastic partners. We forgot to mention at the end of each programme they’ll throw you a big party to celebrate everything you’ve achieved too. Not only will you be a completely different person, but you’ll have made a huge network of amazing friends for life and done something truly inspirational in your community.

For a summer of huge developmental growth, and to find out more, visit

Despite this, the centre is open to both Military Personnel and civilians. The centre offers tuitions and nationally recognised qualifications in sailing, Powerboating and windsurfing.

TEST DUMMY Air Hop

By Tayler Willson

My friend once broke a rib and punctured a lung simultaneously in his back garden on a trampoline. It was a Christmas present. Merry Christmas, mate. As a result of my friend’s selfish, and I think deliberate, backflip onto a flower pot and subsequent breathing difficulties, my mum forbid me to bounce… But, when I got ear of Guildford’s trampoline park, Airhop, it all came flooding back to me: The altitude, the laughter, the freedom, the dodgy springs and my mate laid spread-eagle on the floor gasping for air. But there were no flower pots at Airhop; “it’s as safe as houses,” I told my mum. That being so, mother granted me permission to jump once again (I’m 23), so me and five colleagues went down to the much-talked-about centre to leap to our heart’s content. After signing our waivers shunting all responsibility away from Airhop should

one of us, say, shatter a bone, we collected our special trampolining socks and went over to receive our rules and regulations talk. Ironically, one of the key rules at Airhop is: ‘ALWAYS JUMP AND LAND WITH TWO FEET’, a rule that, essentially, eradicates hopping in its entirety. But hopping wasn’t the day’s aim, we came to bounce. And bounce we did. We headed over to the ‘Free Bounce Zone’ where, as the name suggests, you can jump freely (but safely). I immediately impressed my colleagues with a back somersault, followed by a

superbly executed Triple Full (a single back somersault with three twists). They didn’t tell me they were impressed, but the look in their eyes spoke volumes. I could tell. Following my trampolining exhibition, we entered the ‘Dodgeball Zone’ – again, a fairly self-explanatory sector. We split into two teams of three and, as soon as the umpire signalled, we bounded to the centre of the arena to each collect a ball to pelt at the opposition. Before I knew it, I was out, one right in the face. It was a truly shocking display from me, but enjoyable for all that.

SPORT

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Sport

After a few rounds of Dodgeball and, probably, around four litres of sweat exiting my surprised and shattered body, we reached the much-coveted Foam Pit. I had heard many a tale of the foam pit from colleagues who had quite substantial bouncing experience. “It’s like falling into a cloud,” one said, “It’s doing a backflip into candyfloss,” said another. Me? I managed to make it look like I tripped face-first into a muddy puddle. The lack of elegance was unreal, but the foam landing was, as described, heavenly. Other colleagues were more graceful in their foam experience, but I did a Triple Full earlier, so I had to let them win something. We finished on the ‘Basketball Slam

Dunk’ section, an area with two basketball hoops (differing each in height) and a strip of trampoline making the NBA-style slam dunk finishes we all wish we could do, doable. I stepped up to slam in a Space Jam special and went terribly wide of the mark. Kids were watching me and laughing. “You have a go then, kid, if it’s that easy,” I said with my eyes to a small child no older than eight, and passed him the ball. Without hesitation, he bounced, dunked and landed with impeccable style and sass. I stormed off as to pretend I didn’t see or care. Before I knew it, it had been a full hour. I was a broken man, but I was free again. It was an hour that took me back to my

youth and made me feel younger again, and who doesn’t need that? Airhop’s for all ages and sizes, so you should head down there at some point and give it a go yourself, yeah? Good. I’m glad we agree.

Airhop is at 12 Midleton Industrial Estate Rd, Guildford GU2 8XW. Call 01483 504750 or visit airhoptrampolinepark.com for more information.

BUSINESS PROFILE: Electric Bikes Guildford

By Tayler Willson

Electric Bikes Guildford have only been open since January 2015, but its success is clear already. Chris and Annie Ogle initiated the idea of a store solely dedicated to electric bikes in 2014, and on 27th January 2015, Electric Bikes Guildford was born.

lives. Customers with illnesses or injuries that had previously prevented them from riding bikes could now enjoy the hills of Surrey on two wheels – something he, quite rightly, was very proud of. I’m a cyclist myself - albeit a warm weather cyclist – and having been through the aches and pains of a gruelling hill climb, I was intrigued as to how much a difference motor-assistance would make – and, in all honesty, if the new addition would take away what cycling’s really about.

from all different backgrounds and all have different notions for purchasing an electric bike. Many are simply looking to make a commute that little bit easier and some are just keen to stay out on their bikes that little longer.

We got in touch with Chris, who kindly invited us down to his Woodbridge Road shop in the centre of Guildford, to let us see for ourselves what the fuss was all about.

The ma jority of the bicycles have four motor settings: Turbo, Sport, Eco and No Assist. Each varies in its level of assistance. The bike’s themselves are as good-looking and well-made as non-assisted bikes, with the only noticeable addition the battery pack.

After a good hour out on the road and venturing off-road and onto what would usually be uncomfortable riding terrain, we headed back so I could give my final verdict. Truthfully, prior to this I had never once considered purchasing an electric bike. I thought that the assistance would’ve barely been noticeable. But, when taught how to properly manoeuvre the particulars of an electric bike, it offers so much more than I expected.

Chris, who for the previous thirty-years had worked as a finance director, admitted that he took the new career path to work in an industry he’s passionate about and enjoys. He told me of some of the overwhelming feedback he’s had so far from EBG customers. Over a coffee, Chris explained his belief that his product had changed people’s

My poor fitness levels were in the back of my mind as we set off up Guildford High Street; riding up the cycling-compulsory Surrey hills was a new experience. Before I knew it, and with minimal effort, I’d completed the first incline – an incline I would’ve probably walked my bike up. Chris told me that his customers come

He admitted that, at the moment, he rarely sells to people under the age of 50, but believes that if people realise the difference the assistance an electric bike give you, the younger generation will be keen to try.

If, like me, you are a keen cyclist or are hoping to get into cycling, you’d be a fool not to visit Electric Bikes Guildford before making any rash purchasing decisions.

Webb Ellis on Tour: Rugby World Cup Countdown

W

ith the Rugby World Cup only a month-or-so away, the Webb Ellis Cup Tour heads down to Surrey giving rugby fans all over the county the chance to get their hands on one of the game’s most recognisable icons… The Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour is set to visit over 300 destinations throughout its 100 day journey of the UK and Ireland, and will be at, both, Surrey Sports Park and Cobham Rugby Club on Sunday 30 August. The tour in its entirety will travel all around the globe acting as a countdown until the September 18th kick-off, where it will arrive at Twickenham as part of the pre-match celebrations before England host Fiji. Surrey Sports Park Chief Executive, Paul Blanchard, w: “We are delighted to confirm that the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour will be visiting Surrey Sports Park. As an Official Team Base for Italy and Ireland during the tournament and a confirmed Team Base for the Quarter and Semi Finals, the University of Surrey’s Sports Park will truly be at the heart of the sporting event in the area, offering the chance for the local community to be a part of it.” England will want to put their Six Nations heartache behind them and make the most of the home advantage by going the distance. England captain Chris Robshaw, though, admitted that winning the World Cup will not be easy, but was confident in his side’s abilities. “Look, the World Cup’s an extremely competitive thing. When you get to the World Cup Group Stages you need to be on your metal every time as we found with the Six Nations. When we went over to Ireland in the Six Nations we weren’t onpoint and it cost us, potentially, the entire tournament. “But going into the World Cup, we need to make sure that every time we go on the pitch, especially at Twickenham, we make sure all our details are spot on. The intensity has to be up there and our game plan needs to be spot on.” The Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour schedule can be viewed at rugbyworldcup.com/trophy-tour and full details of Surrey Sports Park’s tour event on Sunday 30 August will be announced over the coming months.

England is the only Northern hemisphere country to have won the tournament. And, consequently, lifted the Webb Ellis Cup.

3.....

Australia is the only nation that has held the trophy twice. A hat-trick was averted by Jonny Wilkinson’s right boot in the 2003 Final. A win for the Wallabies would have been even more painful had they had also succeeded in their campaign for the first country to lift the trophy three times to be allowed to keep it.

4.....

From the 1st December 2006 until the 6th January 2007, the Webb Ellis Cup was on display at Rugby Museum in Rugby, England, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of William Webb Ellis - the boy who broke the rules by playing football with his hands; and changed the course of sporting history forever.

5.....

During May of 2007 the cup entered the new territory of the Arabian Gulf, touring the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain. Might a middle-Eastern team one day win the Webb Ellis Cup far into the future?

SPORTS NEWS WHAT’S ON THIS MONTH

Surrey Scorchers News ormer Guildford and Surrey Heat coach Creon Raftopoulos will lead the brand new Surrey Scorchers team, replacing Surrey United, in the British Basketball League (BBL)...

F

The Zimbabwean began his first season in the BBL in 2010 with Guildford Heat, taking his side on three consecutive play-off runs. His final season in charge saw Raftopoulos secure his best BBL finish to take, including a Championship Play-off semi-final after finishing 4th during the regular campaign and Cup and Trophy quarter-final appearances. Creon returns to the BBL after a two season hiatus, in which time he turned his attentions to community

development including playing a role including the introduction of Walking Basketball around the country. Following his signing, Raftopoulos said: “I am really excited to take up this position with Surrey Scorchers and get back to coaching in the BBL.

“I am already in contact with a number of potential players who I am keen to get on court and I am hoping to have a full squad together soon to begin pre-season training and be ready for the start of the 2015/16 season in September.”

“We’ve got some great plans to develop a club built around community engagement that is both successful and sustainable, something that Surrey has been crying out for for a long time.

In a nod to Surrey’s illustrious basketball history, Surrey Scorchers will usher in a new dawn for professional basketball in the county.

“I have been fortunate to cover a number of BBL games as a colour commentator for BBLTV, which has kept me in touch with all the teams’ style of play.

SURREY SPORTIVE II 16th August, Surrey Sports Park, Guildford

The brand change takes place ahead of the 2015/16 BBL season and encompasses a new identity, logo, kit, website and social media channels.

Join the second ever Guildford Cycle Sportive for a fully supported, noncompetitive road cycle in support of charity Dreams Come True, at Surrey Sports Park mid-August. Choose between a distance of 75, 65 or 41 miles, rolling and winding your way through and over the Surrey Hills.

STOP & SEARCH Monitoring the Workforce By David Denovan & Charmaine Dudman

The legal action currently in the news relating to security checks Apple undertakes with their employees, has caused considerable comment across the media and within business circles. The cause of the dispute has not been so much about the level of security or any personal infringement of freedoms but more to do with the amount of time it is taking to undertake the searches. Employees are expected to wait in line for bag searches and clearance checks. The crux of the matter is whether these searches and checks should take place whilst the employee is still being paid for their time or whether the employer has the right to carry out the activity outside the contracted hours of employment. In the UK, bag searches and other checks are not unusual in certain business environments such as retail and where employees are exposed to high value goods or materials in their day to day work. Many employers will refer explicitly to the security processes they implement in their terms of employment and staff handbook. It is unlikely to be claimable by an employee as ‘overtime’ unless the contract of employment specifically identifies it as such. On the other hand, employees have rights to reasonable privacy at work. If an employer were to conduct unreasonable searches of employee’s bags and possessions on a regular basis and particularly within a sector where there is little risk of theft, the employer could face potential legal proceedings.

What is a sensible policy for employers to take? Basically if an employer has made it clear what their search and security checks are at the start of the employment period, through written policies within an employee’s contract, it will provide them with good protection should there be a claim. Whilst bag searches will continue to be the norm in certain business sectors, the battlefields in the future are more likely to involve technology. CCTV has been around for a long time but more employers are utilising activities such as monitoring e-mails and the internet as well as GPS tracking where employees are out on the road. Drug testing is also common in work places such as the oil and nuclear industry. Data protection law covers any monitoring of employees that involves taking data, images or drug testing. If an employee is unhappy about being monitored, they should check their staff handbook or contract to see if the employer is allowed to do this. If the employer has not made clear that they will undertake bag searches or other monitoring and checks as a last resort an employee might be able to resign and claim unfair (‘constructive’) dismissal. This is a little extreme! Searching employees or their belongings is usually not good for workforce morale. Accordingly this right should be used sparingly, and only where good evidence exists that the employee has committed:

without their consent is likely to amount to a criminal assault. The search of the employee is limited to external clothing, for example their coats, hats and shoes. Consider whether there should also be a right to search a company vehicle and, if so, include the optional wording. Written records of any search should be kept, including a signed consent from the employee. Hence employers should have a written policy on any personal searches. Searches should: • respect privacy • be done by a member of the same sex • be done with a witness present The employer risks an employee lodging a claim for discrimination, assault or false imprisonment if a search or drug test is badly handled. There is a risk of causing personal freedom infringements in all monitoring and search techniques if used in the wrong way. How and when these monitoring and tracking activities are to be used should also be spelt out in an employee’s contract of employment as well as in house documentation.
