Our Citizens… TEAM T
T
his month in Our Citizens, we look to the people who produce and peddle this delightful guide that you find yourself perusing with interest and intrigue. We thought we’d put several topical questions to some of the team in light of this month’s goings-on. So here’s a little insight a little mind-grab if you like - of what’s on the minds of the TG Crew…
Creepy crawlies and all things naughty, of course all hallows eve graces us with its ghoulish presence on the 31st October – naturally, we asked what would you dress up as at Halloween?
Emma Lewis (Uber Designer) – “The Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland – she’s pretty scary” Amy Sutton (Queen of Accounts) – “Mary Berry” Joe Payne (Wordsmith and Weight Lifter) – “Usually a pick n’ mix from a Halloween bargain bin. One year saw a pair of devil horns on my head, an eerie plastic painting over my chest and a rubber bum…” Chloe Benson (Sales Team Ship-Shaper) – “A Zombie Fairy” Sam Massink (Sales Bigwig and CameraPointer)– “Salad Fingers’ Hubert Cumberdale”
Guildford Book Festival happens between the 12th & 19th October –in true literary spirit we asked the team, what’s your favourite book?
Rich Lee (Writer/Investigator/Gastronome) – “Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. But I’m not supposed to talk about it…” Fiona Knowlton (Supreme TG Leader) – “The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough – the ultimate chick flick book”. Joe - “There are loads - it’s between Lord of the Rings, Life of Pi, Catcher in the Rye, Crime and Punishment or Karl Pilkington’s Happyslapped by a Jellyfish.” Alex D’Arcy (Magazine Creator-in-Chief) – “Brave New World by Aldous Huxley or On the Road by Jack Kerouac” Chloe – “Generation X by Douglas Coupland”

M TG MEDIA There’s always so much going on where we live; whether it’s a new restaurant opening or an intimate must-see gig, we asked the team – what are you looking forward to this October? Rich – “Chas & Dave at Princes Hall on 31st October. Don’t ask me how they ended up on my musical bucket list…” Alex – “Dizraeli & the Small Gods at The Boileroom 23rd October or Martha Tilston, again at The Boileroom on the 25th October. Both absolute musical gems. Well worth checking out.” Amy – “Autumnal walks in the Surrey Hills” Joe – “I am desperate to try out Steak and Lobster in Guildford, but Arthur Brown at the Boileroom will be excellent…” Fiona – “A night at the Volunteer pub in Abinger Hammer, sitting by their open fire enjoying one of the many traditional meals like steak and kidney pudding.”
Not content to rest on our laurels and being firm believers that change can be a good thing, we asked the team – what one thing would you change about the area that you live in? (Spoiler alert – “more independent business” seems to be a recurring theme) Chloe – “More street cafes and riverside cafes and bistros. Also, more independent shops. I think Guildford Borough Council should offer 10% of the retail space in the town centre to independent businesses with a 20% discounted rent and business rates to encourage new trade and local people to become more involved with the town. Also, I would make the little ice cream shop in Stoke Park into a really cute 50’s themed stand that did cakes and amazing hot chocolate in the winter.” Fiona – “I would love to see some more pop up restaurants and more weekend events such as themed markets and music festivals.” Alex – “The return of some semblance of independent businesses that operate on Guildford High Street. I’m pretty sure you can count the number of business’ on less than one hand. And an independent cinema would be a most welcome addition.” Amy – “More independent bars in Woking!” Sam – “More independent retailers selling fresh produce – butchers, fishmongers, green grocers.” Joe – “An independent pub-restaurant in Woking town centre would be a welcome addition.”

OUR HISTORY: A Pig Named Sue by Will Knowlton So we’ve all heard the phrase “pigs might fly”. But, thanks to one Surrey resident who had a penchant for practical jokes, there seems to be some truth in the matter…

SEEDS FOR DEVELOPMENT:
PLANTING HOPE IN UGANDA By Rich Lee
How Alison Hall, a single mother from Shalford, took a journey into the unknown and empowered 16,000 of the poorest farming families in Uganda…
‘W
ouldn’t it be great if…’ is a question that Alison Hall has often found ending in a mad flight into adventure and discovery. It was the catalyst behind her founding her charity Seeds for Development in 2007 and it has taken her from being a marketing executive for IBM to helping some of the poorest communities in Uganda with her unique model of microfinancing. It began at a conference for women in Oslo in 2007. “It was all very inspiring but I didn’t want to go. I didn’t want to spend four days with 500 women in Oslo in October. My manager said ‘Go! It might change your life!’ Famous last words.” It was during a talk by Ugandan businesswoman Josephine Okot that Alison heard about the plight of the country’s poorest farmers, families so poor that they couldn’t afford the seeds to feed themselves much less become commercial farmers. She thought: “Wouldn’t it

be great if I could sponsor a Ugandan farmer?” She took the idea to Josephine Okot after her speech. “She looked me up and down and said, “You want to help one farmer? There are 5 million that need help.” That was like a red rag to a bull.”
More than a Charity A few months later, Alison found herself in the Ugandan bush, in the back of a pickup truck surrounded by four strangers, without phone reception, or the first idea about charity work or farming – other than growing her own tomatoes back home in Shalford. Nonetheless, she began her first pilot project with a £2500 donation, microfinancing 84 farmers AND allowing them to purchase 35 kilos of seeds each. They each earned £300 from their first crop, while paying back the money loaned by Alison’s Seeds for Development organisation. “We didn’t want to give them hand-outs, and they weren’t asking for them. So we decided that instead of giving them the money to buy seeds we would work with them as a group so they could be in the position to buy enough seed for every member. And when they sold the crop there would be enough money left over to buy the seeds for the next crop. They can use that pot either as they’re own credit scheme, or they can borrow against it and charge interest or they can use it to buy more seeds for the next season or they can buy some different seeds.”
during and after the ‘Silent War’. “We started with two groups in this camp. One group suffered from HIV and AIDS- they were in a really pathetic place, they’d given up. The other was a group of women, child mothers who had been abducted during the war and had been child soldiers and sex slaves.” With Alison’s help, many of these refugees began to return to their former homes and sew their own crops, beginning their journey away from poverty and towards economic empowerment.
Happy Coffee Bean “Wouldn’t it be great if the coffee I was drinking was grown by our farmers?” That idea came to Alison back home in 2011, after having returned from Uganda and a meeting with a coffee company there. On her next visit, she set about establishing a cooperative of farmers to grow Arabica coffee
beans. With donations given to Seeds for Development, their spinoff charity Happy Coffee Bean intends to import the farmers’ coffee over to the UK. “We’ve since grown 28,000 coffee seedlings from 280 farmers from the camps. For the first time the farmers were looking beyond the season and towards diversification. They believe in their future.” Now that Seeds for Development supports over 1600 farming families in Uganda, no one is more surprised than Alison that an idea she had in 2007 has grown into something sustainable, assisted by her two fellow trustees in Guildford, Sally Varley and Penny Peters. “In the next five years, my dream is that this problem has gone away. That there’s no threat of war and only happy communities with bicycles and phones and kids in schools. I just have to be careful whenever I say ‘Wouldn’t it great if’ because I never know where it’s going to lead me next!”
The project was so successful that the group of farmers helped by Alison and her charity grew to 200. Impressed, Josephine Okot took her to the north of the country to see the refugee camps left by nearly two decades of war. “It was just mud hut after mud hut – where the straw from one touches the other. For years they’ve done nothing – they’d wake up in the morning, collect a once a day hand-out from the World Food Programme and just sit. Someone from every family had been abducted or murdered. They all felt as if the whole world had forgotten them

Talking to…
Paul Merton By Rich Lee
P
aul Merton has been a legendary wit on screen and stage for nearly 30 years. With the release of his autobiography, Only When I Laugh, he will be closing out the Guildford Book Festival on 19th October with an appearance at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. We caught up with one of Britain’s finest comic minds ahead of this unmissable event…
How did you decide that this was the right time to write your autobiography?
It goes back to when I was in my late teens, just starting out in comedy. Showbusiness biographies were my favourite reading, so I reckoned that if the career I hoped for materialised, and I was still known by my mid50s, then perhaps my story might be worth writing about. At this age you’ve still got the energy and recollection of those early days and, hopefully, still got a bit of road ahead of you, so it felt like a good time to do it.
As a performer, how did you adapt to the rather solitary act of writing the book?
I write by hand, which as you imagine slows things down a bit. I could learn to type of course, but I don’t have a computer or even a mobile phone. And to
make it even more pre 1947 I only write in pencil! But it can be solitary of course, so when asked ‘how do you write 100,000 words?’ then it’s the old P.G Wodehouse advice: you do it by securing the seat of your trousers to the seat of the chair and you do it every day.
Were there moments of your life that you were reluctant to write about in Only When I Laugh? In most circumstances I write about my own feelings with honesty, but when you’re writing about other people, there’s only so much you want to say. There are no unflattering portraits about other people in there – I’d be absolutely furious if that happened to me in someone else’s book!
When you were young, did you see comedy as an escape from your working class background?
I knew that for the working class, the traditional route to find success was either sport or showbusiness. But for me it was less an escape from class, more of an escape from the boring life of 1970s Morden. I just wanted to do exciting stuff.
Did you want to be a comic for the sake of the craft alone, or did you want the fame along with it?
The ‘fame’ is a very ego thing and when I was a kid playing on my own, I’d imagine myself entertaining an audience of children forever. But now I’m older, I do see it [comedy] as a craft and I would be just as fulfilled directing something I’d written with actors that I wouldn’t be in. The little direction I have done in the past I’ve absolutely loved.
So what film projects do you have in your sights? Now that the hard work in terms of the book is out of the way, film is the next thing for me. There’s a real thirst for British comedy films at the moment – the recent Inbetweeners film was enormously successful, for example. So I’ve got a script that I’m two thirds through with my wife Suki (Webster). If I get that right on paper then I’m really up and running and hope it’ll come to fruition over the next 18 months.
What would you say, if you could go back, to the young Paul Martin that you write about in Only When I Laugh? I’d say to him, “You’re never going to believe this…” (laughs). “Just keep going, I know it seems impossible at the moment, keep practising your writing and don’t give up. You’ll be amazed.”

Talking to ADELE PARKS With fourteen best-selling novels to her name, Guildford-based author Adele Parks has been a passionate supporter of the Guildford Book Festival as well as patron for the last four years. Here she tells us about her love affair with the written word…
By Rich Lee What are your earliest memories of reading? I was lucky enough to grow up in a house where reading was encouraged, for which I’m eternally grateful. It was definitely seen as a form of entertainment, alongside playing with toys and watching TV. My parents pitched the habit brilliantly; often children are put off reading if they associate it with work, rather than play. I’m so grateful to my parents for making reading fun. Is there a book or author that you have returned to again and again over the course of your life? I have re-read Pride and Prejudice several times; I’m aware that’s not a particularly unique thing! I also enjoy revisiting anything by Rosamond Lehmann or Evelyn Waugh. Of course, to be able to return to something again and again demands that it’s discovered quite early - I’m more interested in discovering new books than re-reading. What has you most excited about this year’s Book Festival? It’s very tricky to choose; our festival is attracting a wonderful calibre of author. If forced to pick the one thing I’m most excited about I think I would say that it’s attending Reader’s Day on Saturday 18th. The Reader’s Day is a mini festival all in one. John Boyne (author of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas), Elizabeth
Fremantle and Esther Freud are amongst this year’s line-up. Brilliant! How did you get involved with the festival? I first appeared at Guildford Book Festival about 12 years ago, on a panel event with two other authors; we were all just beginning our careers. Nine years ago we moved to Guildford and I started to get more closely involved with the festival. I was invited to be an official patron of the festival four years ago and I take the role very seriously. Although best known for women’s fiction, this year you offer your perspective on WWI at the festival. What do you find most compelling about the war as a writer?
lived in London but as our son was reaching school age we were keen to recreate the sort of childhoods we’d had. We wanted to offer him a more rural environment and a close community; however I didn’t want to feel cut off. Guildford offers the best of both worlds; we have the most beautiful countryside on our doorstep but our town is buzzy and vibrant. Have you surrendered to a Kindle yet? Kindles are convenient and do have advantages but I like paper copies of books. I think they are objects of beauty and inspiration. Our house is full of them, as you’d imagine!
WWI is fascinating to me. There are endless stories of courage, bravery, mistakes and tragedies. In Spare Brides I wanted to tell the stories of a generation of women who endured the unimaginable with such beautiful dignity. I’m thrilled my first historical novel has been so well received and I look forward to talking about it at the festival. What drew you to Guildford and what do you enjoy about the town and the area? My husband, Jim, has lived in Guildford since he was eighteen. When we first married we

OCTOBER 2014
The Guildford Shakespeare Company Presents:
The Canterbury Tales a landmark text in its use of the Middle English vernacular, at a time when French and Latin were the dominant languages. The tales are presented as part of a story-telling contest by a group of pilgrims as they journey from Southwark to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. The prize for this contest is a free meal at the Tabard Inn at Southwark on their return. But do you know what half the content of this hugely significant piece of literature actually is?
Chaucer’s masterpiece comes to the stage between 23rd October and 8th November, courtesy of the highly acclaimed Guildford Shakespeare Company… For those of you who aren’t aware, Guildford Shakespeare Company are one of the most acclaimed performers of the bard’s work around. However, this October and November, they’re breaking rank to perform one of the all-time great pieces of literary work. Perhaps a bit of background on ‘Canterbury Tales’ is needed here. Geoffrey Chaucher was one of the fathers of modern English literature, arguably one the most important writers of the previous millennium, and a successful bureaucrat. When ‘Canterbury Tales’ was written in the 14th century, it was
Fart gags and bawdy jokes. Seriously. However, some of the tales are also reflective and moralistic, and this yin and yang of works will make for a tremendous stage show in the very capable hands of the Guildford Shakespeare Company. Between Thursday 23rd October and Saturday 8th November, you can catch this marvellous performance in the gorgeous surrounds of St Mary’s Church – fittingly given the context, Guildford’s oldest building - on Quarry Street. Live music and puppetry (oh yes…!) combine in an original production devised and written by the company, where each night the audience will decide the outcome; for as you may well know, the conclusion to Canterbury Tales has historically been something of a hotly debated topic… So this autumn why not take the opportunity to have a laugh, get philosophical and educate yourselves on one of the seminal pieces of literature, courtesy of one of the best group of performers in the land? And you get to do so in beautiful St Mary’s. Bonus...
Canterbury Tales will be at St Mary’s Church between 23rd October and 8th November. Tickets range between £12.50 and £21. Visit www.guildford-shakespeare-company.co.uk for all the info.

The Crazy World
of Arthur Brown Boileroom 31st October Would you believe it’s been over 45 years since ‘Fire’ graced the top of the charts? It’s a remarkable stat, and yet the song is still as well-known and well-loved as ever. Moreover, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown – the fire-helmet wearing psychedelic nuts that created the song – are still going strong; and they come to the Boileroom this Halloween… Artists such as Peter Gabriel, Alice Cooper and Bruce Dickenson site Arthur Brown as a ma jor influence on them and in this, Arthur’s fifth decade in music, the fire is far from out. Indeed, the band have been credited with helping to create heavy metal music - what other act could be so fitting to celebrate the day of the dead? The Crazy World of Arthur Brown will be supported by Bob Log III, a mysterious musical maverick that plays a sleazy take on rock n’ roll. The perfect Halloween blend really…

Many of you of a certain age *cough* pushing 30 and over *cough* will remember this staple of Friday afternoon children’s programming – the immediate after-school shows were for the wee ones, but Knightmare was for the big kid. Ironically a fitting way to describe this writer… For those of you whose memory is jogged but not quite running, the game was thus: An adventure game show, Knightmare involves a team of four children – one taking the role of the sightless dungeoneer, and the remaining three acting as their guide – traversing a medieval environment as they attempt to complete a quest and exit the dungeon, using their wits to overcome puzzles, obstacles and the unusual characters they meet along the journey. It essentially kick-started virtual reality and blue screen games, fact fans… So for a nostalgic Halloweeny treat how could you go wrong? After all: “The immortal words of Treguard the Dungeon Master ring out for the first time in 20 years as he opens the doors to the world of adventure, but do you dare enter…?”

Homemade Halloween Treat
Toffee
Apples This is a really great traditional treat that children will love making during the lead up to Halloween. And you can have some fun by adding multi coloured sprinkles to the apples as the toffee sets.
Method 1
Put your apples into a large bowl 4 at a time and cover with boiling water. Leave for 3 minutes then remove and dry well with kitchen towel. Remove the stalks and push a lolly stick into where the stalk was.
2
Place a sheet of baking paper next to your hob and stand your apples on the paper.
3
Put the sugar into a heavy pan with 100ml of water and turn your hob to medium. Cook for around 5 minutes until the sugar has dissolved. Now stir in the vinegar and syrup. Place a sugar thermometer in the pan bring the mixture to the boil until it reaches 140°c.
4
Turn off the heat and then, working quickly, dip each apple into the toffee making sure that each apple is well covered. Allow any excess to drip off then place each apple on the baking paper to harden. Remember; if the toffee starts to cool down and become too thick simply reheat.
5
Let the apples cool before eating.
Ingredients • • • • • •
8 apples 400g caster sugar 100ml cold water 1 tsp vinegar 4 tbsp golden syrup 8 lolly sticks (available from good kitchen shops like the steamer trading company)
Equipment • • • • •
Large bowl Kettle of boiling water Large sheet of baking paper Sugar thermometer Heavy pan
Tip
Now you have made these glorious sweet treats you may be wondering how in the heck you are going to deal with the sugar stuck to your pan. Simply fill the pan with water and place any utensils you have used in it. Bring to a gentle simmer and the sugar will be dissolved making it safe to dispose of down the sink.

The Guide 2 Surrey’s A good farm shop is a temple to all things fresh, local and delicious, a place where ethical, artisanal food and drink draws foodies from all over the region who seek culinary pleasures that no supermarket can ever truly match. More than just a food shop, Fanny Maiklem’s farm is an experience, a kitsch kaleidoscope of vintage England and a fabulous mess of memorabili. Enjoy the gardens and the cosy corners of the tea rooms, or even going all out and hire the Pudding Room treehouse for an unforgettable afternoon tea. The farm shop itself sells excellent seasonal fruit and veg, amazing chutneys and locally made cakes.
Great for: their famous marmalade and cream teas so good you can even order them by post.
Good local greengrocers are hard to find; so many have been supplanted by supermarkets and convenience stores. Fortunately, Chris Bavin is bucking the trend with his award-winning greengrocers in Waltonon-Thames. Why ‘Naked’? Because Chris believes fruit, veg and flowers are best as nature intended; not shrink-wrapped in cellophane and left to sweat on the shelves. So it is in his friendly, modern shop where all sorts of specialty and seasonal foods can be found.
Great For: Fantastic seasonal veg or fruit boxes
Back to Nature Farm Shop Shabden Park Farm, High Road, Chipstead, Surrey CR5 3SF 01737 552744 Hidden town a bumpy country track lies Shabden Park Farm’s ‘Back to Nature’ farm shop. Neat rows of excellent locally made condiments rub shoulders with great local wines and beers as well as a nice selection of fruit and veg. But it’s the butcher’s counter that’s the real star here. All the meat comes from the farm’s own lambs, cows and pigs that are reared on grasses, herbs and that are free from chemical fertilisers, herbicides and fungicides. Great for: butcher Martyn’s award-winning sausages. Definitely worth a visit this month if you’re after great quality game too.

The Larder Room The Medicine Garden, Downside Road, Cobham, Surrey KT11 3LU 01932589536 The Medicine Garden is another foodie spot begging to be enjoyed at leisure. Situated in a beautiful Victorian walled garden, there’s so much to do here from pottering around the Garden Shop or the Art Shed, eating at the Hothouse Café or the Garden Pod and even some pampering at the Treatment Room. But no trip would be complete without a visit to the Larder Room, a cooperative selling some of the best local produce around, from JL Butcher’s fantastic meat to Olives & Cheese Ltd and Ildiko’s Chocolates among others. There’s Maurice Jones and Son’s fresh meat counter, Crockford Bridge’s own honey, gourmet foods, tempting cakes and desserts and even a section devoted to American food.

Much of the fresh stuff comes from Secrett’s own farm, while their cheese counter is every turophile’s dream. Great for: Farm fresh fruit and vegetables. Definitely cheese.

October is here and so surely this is means an excuse to indulge in some classic comfort food. Here we have two recipes for the ultimate in culinary comfort: pie. Both our recipes use pre-made pastry as, to be honest; this wonderful autumn weather is making us somewhat lazy. And anyway, who really knows how to make puff pastry from scratch?
HEARTY MUSHROOM PIE This recipe makes either one large pie or 4 individual pies
METHOD 1.
Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4.
2.
Heat oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the onions and leek and cook until they start to soften. Add the mushrooms and sauté until they are brown.
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • •
2 tablespoons olive oil 150g diced onion 125g mushrooms (any variety), sliced 50g button mushrooms, quartered 400ml vegetable stock 1 tsp of wholegrain mustard 1 medium leak, diced 2 tablespoons plain flour 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 250g puff pastry, thawed if frozen 1 egg 1 tablespoon water
3.
4.
5.
Add the flour and stir for around 2 minutes until the mixture is well covered. Pour in vegetable stock and stir. Bring to the boil, then cover and simmer for 8-10 minutes until the sauce has thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the thyme and mustard.
6.
Pour the pan contents into a well-buttered pie dish. In a small bowl, whisk egg and water to form an egg wash. Use this to cover the edge of the pie dish then place a piece of pastry you have cut to fit the dish over the pie.
7.
Use a fork to press down the edges and seal the pie.
8.
Use the remaining egg wash to cover the pie and use a sharp knife to create a steam hole in the top of the pastry.
9.
Cook in preheated oven for 40 minutes or until pastry is golden and puffy.

Cut a piece of pastry to fit the top of the pie dish and place it over the mixture. Use a fork to press down the edges to seal the pastry to the dish. Make a steam hole in the centre of the pie using a sharp knife. Brush the lid with the egg mixture.

WHERE TO EAT:
The Farmhouse Restaurant, Rokers, Guildford Open for barely a year now, the Farmhouse Restaurant at Rokers in Fairlands has been steadily growing in favour among diners willing to make the short trip away from the easy chains in the town centre. And it’s a trip worth taking to discover such an inviting little restaurant. It’s a space of cool hues, warm timber and exposed brick, everything bathed in the natural light above the expansive golf course outside its windows. It’s a place of deft, light touches, and that extends to the food. A starter of Goat’s Cheese in a shell of tempura appeared like two golden dumplings; a fresh salsa and a blob of sharp balsamic a perfect complement to the rich cheese oozing from its crisp fried casing. A warm duck and bacon salad was just my kind of salad: a generous amount of salty meat amid a happy tumble of finely sliced carrot, spring onion and cucumber, humming gently with the aroma of soy sauce and toasted sesame. A main course of lamb cooked to a rosy blush, drizzled with a fresh
pesto sauce felt like a fitting bon voyage to the best flavours of spring and summer, the whole sat in a sweet, silky jus nudging up to an exquisite fondant potato – a thing of buttery-soft wonder that has always eluded me in my own kitchen (still, that’s why we eat out, right?). Another mains of delicately fried sea bass sat atop a heap of soba noodles and gently braised pak choi brought more Asian flavours from pickled ginger and a hint of wasabi. Nothing overpowering, just a fresh, fragrant taste of the orient with a little roasted pepper thrown in. Four simple yet exceptionally well prepared dishes into the meal and it was clear that there is some serious cooking chops going on in the Farmhouse’s kitchen. But if there was any doubt remaining, desserts settled the matter. A lime cheesecake offered an airy-light yet rich mousse filling atop a magnificent, coarse biscuit base; it was a sumptuous hit of fresh citrus topped with a quenelle of ice cream swirled with chocolate. And then there was the sticky toffee pudding. You don’t need me to tell you how good that dessert is. Just know that this one was very good indeed, a handsome wedge of rich sponge

in a lake of thick and glossy toffee sauce. The Farmhouse has only to flex its muscles a and expand upon its short yet focussed menu over its second year to truly become a serious destination for diners. But with food this good, not mention an excellent wine list and easy, friendly service, it’s hard to argue that it hasn’t already.

DICK – THE ADULT PANTO
q
As the name would suggest, strictly for the over 18s. A hilarious, grown up panto followed by some delicious food? Sounds awesome! Here’s what to expect, courtesy of the wonderful Guildford Fringe: Dick is on his way to London to seek fame, fortune and love (or at least lust) when he meets Peter the Pussy(cat) and they form a bond as iconic as Ant and Dec. The trio of sailors, Watt, Ware and Howe have been conceived purely for comedy value and have very little to do with the plot, other than allowing the use of lots of seamen jokes! Ah innuendo. Anyway, if you would like dinner before the panto then Guildford Fringe can arrange a Christmas themed buffet for £10 per person or a 3 course meal for £22.95 per person.
The startlingly brilliant steak restaurant at the top of Guildford High Street is always popular – but if you thought their sirloin was good, their Christmas dinner will surely surpass even that… Don’t expect a soggy sprout or dry turkey – instead, you’ll get some of the finest meaty dishes you could wish for...

CAU, GUILDFORD
LEGACY THATCHER’S HOTEL, EAST HORSLEY One of the very loveliest hotels in the county of Surrey – and there are a fair few – this should be a strong contender for Christmas japes. With space to house you and up to 169 of your closest friends, a wealth of options and a host of other attractions nearby, the Legacy Thatcher’s Hotel should feature highly in your Christmas Party considerations…
STEAK AND LOBSTER, GUILDFORD A brand new – not to mention highly anticipated – restaurant, and one that offers you just two mains. Yes you guessed it – steak? Or lobster? Note: there is no wrong answer…

One of the best known party venues in Guildford town, The Mandolay offers a fabulous array of party options for between 6 and 120 people. There really is so much on offer that we can’t really scratch the surface – their options are listed in a brochure for crying out loud – but if you want guaranteed good food, good entertainment and even a place to spend the night, one heck of a shindig could be held here…

KINGS HEAD, GUILDFORD Turkey from Usk Vale in Monmouthshire; Salmon from the Severn and Wye Smokery in Gloucestershire; Christmas Pudding made from Fuller’s famous Black Cab stout – with a menu like that, did you really think the Kings Head was just a pub? Indeed, it is a pub, but quite the restaurant to boot – and they know how to party, as TGHQ’s 2013 Christmas shindig will attest to. A brilliant atmosphere and delicious food is an absolute given at this Guildford favourite… a

WOOD STREET VILLAGE Another favourite of ours at TGHQ, this is a stellar choice for any gathering, be it a huge Christmas do or a, erm, tiny Christmas do… What we know is that this is a gorgeous venue, inside and out, and with a vast menu that never disappoints, despite its variety. With a vast dining area capable of holding a large party, The White Hart should never be far from your thoughts when throwing any party…

TEST DUMMY Clay Pigeon Shooting
I
wanted to try something new and different. Something with, as the French say, a certain “I don’t know what”. We all know about cycling, badminton and tennis, but what other ancient pursuits could there be? Well I decided to try my hand at shooting - or more specifically, Clay Pigeon Shooting. So with a spring in my step and my eyes focused, I headed out… The weather had improved slightly on a Wednesday as I drove up to Bisley Shooting Ground. My companion for the day was another company member who had never handled a shotgun before, so I felt this was an excellent opportunity to see how a comparative old hand (me) would fair against a complete novice. Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony… For those of you who are wondering, Clay pigeon shooting
involves the art of shooting at special flying targets with a gun. The “clay” is fired from a trap, and the aim is to hit the target as it sails gracefully through the air. Having equipped ourselves, we stood amongst the pines as John, our guide, took us through some basic safety guidelines and basic stances. Then the fun began… The clay sailed out before me, lazily hanging in the air, almost taunting me. I shouldered my gun, breathed easy and slowly deliberately squeezed the trigger. The gun discharged, my shoulder absorbed the recoil - and the clay? Well the clay kept going, didn’t it? The shooting continued and I found that shortly, most clays met their end. Little Mister Amateur who accompanied me however put Annie Oakley to shame. Beginner’s luck I wished, but really it was down to Johns calm, concise and measured

advice. By the end, we were both shooting well and despite me losing a (silly) competition (that I didn’t really take seriously anyway) we had both really progressed. So why not try it? Clay pigeon shooting is a sport that tests patience, coordination but also gets you outside in beautiful surroundings with friends. The nice thing about Bisley Shooting ground is that they are there to introduce you to the sport, its etiquette and benefits. We had a fantastic day, and aside from my companions flukey wins, the day was one I’d happily repeat frankly everyday - but alas, I have to go and try other sports for your entertainment… Find out more at www.bisleyshooting.co.uk or by calling 01483 797017.

With winter fast approaching, the gym often gets neglected. If this sounds like you, then take advantage of the local countryside and do what comes most naturally – go for a nice long walk…
When you take a moment to consider the beautiful countryside that surrounds us, it’s really very easy to see the appeal of hiking. Who doesn’t like getting out there and embracing the outdoors, filling our lungs with clean air and blowing the cobwebs out? Remember, just like any exercise, walking or hiking gets the blood flowing and helps the brain release endorphins - and it also has the neat side effect of being really good cardio-vascular exercise. The thing is, hooked by these feelings of happiness, enjoyment and satisfaction, that you’ll soon find yourself heading out more and more to areas that offer a bigger challenge. You may start out just taking a gentle stroll, but believe me you’ll soon find yourself assaulting the challenging walks bridleways of Surrey and Hampshire with renewed vigour. Taking up walking for exercise can sometimes be a little more involved than walking the dog on Sundays, so here’s my guide for beginners to get you prepared and keen to crack on…
GET THE RIGHT KIT One of the best things about walking is that it’s free. There are not many other sports that are open and accessible for every one of all ages and budgets. First off, you need to have the right kit for hiking. But don’t go crazy; Start simply. So, let’s start at the bottom; footwear. I can’t say that hiking boots are the most fashionable of things, or the cheapest, but they will certainly offer the best all-round protection from wet feet and twisted ankles on the paths, bridleways and trails of Surrey. A little rucksack is a must as well, to carry all your maps, spare jumper as well as water and snacks. Also invest in a warm, waterproof coat. We Britons know of this strange thing called the weather and its mercurial persuasions!
PAIR UP And speaking of things changing quickly: If you’re a beginner going out and hiking alone should be something to work towards. If you get lost or come into difficulty having someone with you is really wise. Remember the old adage of two heads being better than one. Safety aside, what better way to enjoy the countryside than sharing it with someone?

e for walking... BE PREPARED
YOUR MOBILE IS NOT DEEP THOUGHT
The Boy Scout motto is the right one. Before going out for a hike – regardless of how short or long – it’s really important that everything is ready before you step out of the front door. You’d be pretty miffed if you got to the start of your walk and realised you forgot the map! Having said that, don’t fall into the trap I have and pack your bag for every eventuality; it can be like that wack-a-mole game; once you prepped for one thing, another possibility pops into your head and you’ll soon find you’re carrying weights that Soldiers are expected to. With all that unnecessary weight you’ll find your energy gone and your enjoyment with it.
Mobile Phones are absolutely amazing things and they help hikers out on a daily, if not hourly, basis up and down the country but mobiles are often the main reason people get lost in the first place, because they’re relying on smartphone map apps. Smartphone maps are not (and this is entirely opinion here) as detailed as a printed map. For one thing, an Ordnance Survey map doesn’t run out of battery.
FOOD AND DRINK It may sound crazy, but make sure you take snacks and water with you. Walking around you’re dehydrating just like when you run, but you don’t notice it because it’s gentle, relaxing and frankly you’re having fun. The only bummer with water is it weighs a lot so again be careful.

Time to Sign Up for the
Surrey Half Marathon…
It may seem a little strange to be talking about an event that’s taking place in March next year - but there’s good reason. The 2015 Surrey Half Marathon is open for registration now, and with the course for the race having just been approved it’s time for those of you who quest for glory to dust off the trainers, register and get out on Surrey’s (exceptionally well laid) roads to begin training for the day.

Registration is easy; simply head over to the race’s official website and click on the Sign Up 2015 tab. Here you will be guided to what particular phase of the race to join. There’s obviously the main race, but there’s also a chance for kids to get involved as well as The Corporate Challenge if you guys in the office fancy a challenge other than “who can resist the doughnut Janet’s brought in the longest”.
Registration Fees are £36 for the Half Marathon Runners, just £5 for kids and the Corporate Challenge is £36 as well. So come on Guys and Girls of Surrey, register today and run for your chosen charity and enjoy that tremendous feeling of achievement!

ME
OCTOBER 2014
‘Me’
Boris Karloff Boris Karloff was born in the UK but despite spending most of his career over the pond he came back home to Surrey and having spent his last days in Bramshott and was cremated and interred at Guildford Crematorium. In honour of Halloween we invoked Boris’ spirit to catch up with this iconoclast of Horror Films.
LOCA L P E O P L E , E X T R AO R DI N A RY L I VE S . WHAT DID YOU DO?
I am an actor, dear boy. HOW DID YOUR CAREER GET STARTED?
I spent my childhood in a big family and was destined to join the consular service, believe it or not. But that was more my brother’s thing. I dropped out of King’s College and spent some time as a labourer on a farm. At a bit of a loss, I soon happened upon acting. I started out by travelling to Canada and dabbling in a few stage plays. The rest is, as they say, history.
I did enjoy playing Isopod in The Five Star Final. Yes, Isopod was interesting. Unscrupulous reporters are still a problem now, I understand. WERE YOU MUCH DIFFERENT FROM THE CHARACTERS YOU PLAYED?
Oh very, it is acting after all. DID YOU EVER FEEL TYPECAST?
BORIS KARLOFF ISN’T YOUR REAL NAME IS IT?
No, absolutely not. I was always in control of where my career was going. I enjoyed the realm of the macabre and horrific. But I think people forget I didn’t always play monsters.
Ah ha! I see you’ve been snooping! Well yes, you’re quite right; my real name is Pratt, William Henry Pratt.
WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE NEW MUMMY FILM?
WHY THE CHANGE?
I was a little worried the family may be embarrassed by my stage and film career so I changed it. I was wrong as it turned out; they were very proud. WHAT WAS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT?
Every character one plays will always have a special place in one’s heart because ultimately, as an actor, one gives themselves to the character every time. I suppose playing the monster in Frankenstein would be an obvious answer, but…
Well these new-fangled effects are very impressive I must say. I liked the comic spin on things and that Vosloo chap really made Imhotep exceptionally scary in my opinion. Yes, top draw.. WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE IF YOU HAD YOUR TIME AGAIN?
My dear chap, nothing, absolutely nothing. Everything in life teaches you how to handle the next hurdle.
