You may be studiously reading this at the beginning of the month and for that we’re sorry, but we do this month’s in advance, so we’re usually over Christmas by then. However November is the month of the light switch-on, so this is what we bring you: coming to a town near you, the following twinkly sparkle-fests will make you feel all warm on these damn chilly evenings… Camberley 19th November / 10am to 7pm An entire day dedicated to a light switch on?! Madness. Heading to Camberley is a ruddy great idea – a whole Saturday of festive frivolities, culminating in the big switcheroo. The Camberley Christmas Light Switch on is fast becoming a yuletide tradition for many local residents and shoppers alike. Hosted by those wonderful people at Collectively Camberley, who have organised some of the most interesting and entertaining events of recent months (think classic car show, roof top cinema, the Market Street festival…), this will be a festive treat for young and young-at-heart alike. Expect festive fun, live music, Christmas cheer
and more. More details will appear nearer the time, but we’re banking on something a little bit special this November… Find out more at collectivelycamberley.co.uk
Guildford 17th November / 7pm Ah Guildford – how we admire a Christmasilluminated version of thee. Those cobbles, the tumbling landscape, and the twinkly lights; wonderful… The highlight of every Christmas Lights event is the balcony show from the Guildhall, which begins at 6pm. Singers, performers and many more will be there to entertain the crowds as the big switch-on approaches. The stars of the Yvonne Arnaud pantomime will light up the town at 7pm. Oh and just to be extra awesome, there’s a fireworks display afterwards too… Find out more at experienceguildford.co.uk
Woking 24th November / From 4pm (Lights on at 7pm) Woking town centre is something to behold, a space that reflects a thriving expanding town – so expect a fantastic spectacle when them lights start a-glistenin’… Expect members of the panto to be out in force for the occasion – this year it’s starring none other than Warwick Davies; will he be there for the big event? Only time will tell. But either way this promises to be an exceptionally fun gathering for all the family!

Farnham 19th November / 1pm to 6pm Farnham you pretty so-and-so. How could we possibly love this town any more? And once it’s all lit up and even prettier, we might have to write an ode to it.
festive extravaganza, coupled with a sense of community. Wunderbar! A programme of entertainment is being prepared along with a pop-up street food market designed to showcase local retailers. In short – expect a wonderful family event which bring the whole community together.
This year’s local Christmas festivities promise to be as exciting and dazzling as ever, with lots of lovely events taking place between 1 and 6pm. Taking place around Gostrey Meadow and East Street, seeing one of our favourite town centre’s celebrating with a fair ground and (we think it’s safe to guess) Father Christmas is just wonderful…

Ellie Kelly of Buttons Children’s Parties offers some hints and tips on making the children of Surrey’s Christmas even more magical...
C
hristmas is, in my eyes, the most magical time of year. It only comes around once a year and although the same can be said for your birthday, Christmas is a time when everyone gets presents! Everyone being excited about the same thing at the same time brings about a feeling of pure excitement and joy. The magic comes from the anticipation, the family traditions and rituals, the icy mornings and winter knitwear, the excitement of finding the perfect present for the ones you love, the smell of open fires, smiles on children’s faces, building snowmen, the questions about Santa and the reindeer, the job of ‘having’ to tell them all the lovely white lies and stories, picking the Christmas tree....oh the list could go on and on. The most magical memories I have of Christmas are based around being a child or with children. I remember when I was around 12 years old myself and my brother set up a Santa trap with a musical Christmas card (it didn’t work very well). When I was a little older we gave my younger cousin my
TheL I T T L EGuide2Yuletide
play kitchen and told her the knobs on the cooker had been chewed by the reindeer (rather than our dog!). She loved that kitchen and loved the fact that the reindeer had been to visit… This year is set to be extremely magical; Buttons Children’s Parties is fully booked with Christmas parties and the team is so excited about creating magical moments for all of the kids and their parents. I love researching and creating parties that will capture the imagination, wow the guests and leave everyone with smiles on their faces. In the time I have worked in the children’s entertainment industry I have come across lots of lovely ideas to make Christmas even more magical for both children and mums and dads. Here are a few of my favourites:
Bed Time Reading In my opinion the best Christmas book ever – J.R.R Tolkien’s Letters from Father Christmas. Every year Tolkien wrote a letter and drew fantastic pictures for his children from Father Christmas, telling them wonderful stories of life at the North Pole and the adventure of the north polar bear. I urge you to get this book and make it your December bed time story. If you are really creative, why not recreate some of the letters or photo copy and enlarge the drawings so your children can see all the amazing details?
Follow Santa on his Adventure Now, I have never tracked Santa online before, but I am looking forward to doing it this year. So many mums have told me how much their children love it and I don’t want to be left red faced when they start asking questions at parties! As far as I can tell from chatting to party mums on Facebook the place to be is with Norad!
Treats for the Reindeer We all leave something nice for Santa but what about those hard working Reindeer?! A few days before Christmas why not make up some bags of reindeer food with your little ones to sprinkle in the garden on Christmas Eve. What do your children think a magical reindeer would eat? I say gather a few bowls and fill them with oats, glitter, chocolate chips and well frankly whatever your children’s imaginations come up with.
A Winter Walk and Crafting Pull on those wellies, wrap up warm and set out on an adventure with the kids to find some lovely items to craft with. These could be leaves in beautiful colours that you can cover in PVA and
make into bunting, pine cones to paint or cover in glitter, twigs to spray paint and then pop them in a jar in the kids’ rooms and they can create their own mini tree.

T A LTKOI N G
By Chloe Kearns Warwick Davis, star of stage and screen, has travelled far and wide throughout his acting career but is back in his home county of Surrey for Panto season. Chloe Kearns went along to speak to the man himself as he prepares to tread the boards in Snow White at The New Victoria Theatre, Woking… So, it’s that time of year again when you’ll be entertaining audiences with a festive show; you’re playing Snow White, right?
example as Professor Flitwick, there was a wand pocket, so all these little details help you feel the character.
Absolutely, and the handsome prince! Isn’t it obvious? (Laughs.)
Panto must be the perfect place to bring fantasies to life. What do you enjoy about it?
You played Woking in 2014 with the Reduced Height Theatre Company and ‘See How They Run’. Are you pleased to be on stage again in Panto?
To give people the gift of a good night in the theatre and laughter, there’s no better way to earn a living than doing that. It’s wonderful to go out and instigate laughter from people. There’s many more opportunities these days for people to share how they feel about things and I love that, to comment, good and bad, because you can learn from those comments.
I’ve been through here with a tour and I’ve got fond memories. It’s a beautifully designed auditorium and I’ve watched shows here so I know what it feels like to be in the audience. It feels like a bit of a treat when you come here to watch shows. Pantomime is notorious for fabulous costumes, what has been your favourite costume to wear? I think my butler’s costume in Billionaire Boy because that was a beautifully made tailcoat and a wing collar and I felt very special in that. I think your costume can really make you feel different as a performer. The Harry Potter costumes, for
What do you love about being on stage? I do film and TV all year but Panto is the one time I get up in front of an audience and it is a delight because you never know what’s going to happen. When you work on film and TV, you’ve always got another take, but when I walk on stage here at Woking at Christmas I can’t go and do it again for that audience, they’re only going to see it once.
TheL I T T L EGuide2Yuletide
We’ve got to keep getting new audiences in and Panto is the way to do that, because it’s exciting, you know it’s going to deliver on all fronts: it’s going to be funny, bright and bold. It is REAL magic, in a way you can’t replicate at home or in the cinemas even. What is the most important thing to get right with Panto? It can change, as long as we remember the most important thing is the story. I watch too many Pantos where the story becomes secondary to the cast enjoying themselves; it’s got to be about the audience and the story, and we dress it up with these wonderful Panto traditions that we know and love, the ‘it’s behinds yous, call-backs, music, dance, rhymes, gags, physical comedy, all of this stuff. But we must have the foundation right, the story is the key.
Warwick Davis appears as Prof in Snow White at the New Victoria Theatre, Woking, running from Saturday 10th December to Sunday 8th January 2017. Visit www.atgtickets.com for tickets.
