“You Don’t Know My Story” by John P. Kee How many times have we assumed that people have these fairytale lives? It’s like we think they wake up in a world of unicorns and rainbows. Not to mention all the social media platforms where you see just about everyone living their best lives. We never know what’s behind those flashy smiles and materialistic mind sets that are showing the brand new mini mansions and brand new luxury vehicles. Maybe they deserve their success. You never know a person’s tragedies because they will only show their triumphs on social media. This song speaks to those of us who have overcome addictions, low self esteem, attempted suicides. There are days where life is a huge struggle with constant battles of socioeconomic challenges are being faced every day. This song has so much power and truth behind it because as human beings we automatically assume the worst about a person without knowing their story and what it took to become who they are. The next time you call yourself coveting what someone else has, make sure you know the full details of their story and what it took to get where they are. Make sure you know their story.

Zoey Marie Jackson Makes Her Debut Interview by King Brooks

I came to know the woman behind Zoey Marie Jackson over 10 years ago as Michelle Lindo Rice and watched her spice up the inspirational/Christian fiction category. Zoey Marie Jackson makes her debut on Harlequin’s Love Inspired imprint. I had the opportunity to chat with Zoey Marie before the release of her debut book ‘The Adoption Surprise.’ So pull up a chair and enjoy this interview. King Brooks: Hi Zoey, please tell the readers about ‘The Adoption Surprise?’ Zoey Marie Jackson: The Adoption Surprise is about a pair of twins, Mia and Morgan, who were separated at birth and adopted by two different families. Years later, when the twins meet each other after each suffering trauma, they are determined to be a family and to remain together. Mia’s dad, Zach, and Morgan’s aunt, Kelsey, feel it is important to keep the girls connected and form a friendship. But their matchmaking daughters might have other plans! KB: Where did the idea for this story come from? ZM: This all started with a tweet by the editor for Harlequin Love Inspired on Twitter. She loved the show, Sister Sister. I was inspired. Sister Sister was a favorite of mine and I began working on the storyline. KB: How long did it take for you to write ‘The Adoption Surprise?’ ZM: Once I received approval for my proposal, it didn’t take long to write. The first draft took close to a couple months but then were rounds of revisions, rewrites and editing. So it takes a few months to a year to get the book ready. KB: ‘The Adoption Surprise’ is your first book on the Love Inspired imprint from Harlequin. How different is ‘The Adoption Surprise’ from your other books? ZM: The Adoption Surprise is an inspirational romance and the first as Zoey Marie Jackson. The central focus is the love story between two people united for a common purpose. My other books as Michelle Lindo-Rice do have a lot of faithful and inspirational themes but I think there are a lot of other twists and turns and plot points that might not be used in a Love Inspired read. KB: What do you want readers to take away from ‘The Adoption Surprise’ after reading it? ZM: I want readers to enjoy how Zach and Kelsey found healing

10

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

through their faith and their love for the little girls. I want them to see characters who are facing tough trauma overcome because of their relationship with God. I hope they find it emotional and engaging, wanting more from Zoey Marie Jackson. KB: Who is Zoey Marie Jackson as a person and as an author? ZM: I love writing stories of hope and second chances. Why? Because I need hope to get up every day and keep going even when things are tough. I also have needed several second chances. So, I hope people see that reflected in my work as an author. KB: How did you come up with the name Zoey Marie Jackson? Why did you change your name for your Harlequin debut? ZM: Zoey Marie Jackson is actually a part of my actual legal

name. A lot of us Jamaicans have a lot of names. I had already set up this pen name and my husband had designed the website but hadn’t decided what to do with it. However, God had other plans. So, when I was given the opportunity to write for Harlequin Love Inspired, it felt right to have a new name for a new adventure. KB: When did the writing bug hit you? ZM: I started writing when I was about 28 years old. Fast forward 20 years later, and I have several books written and four to be released this year. Two under Zoey Marie Jackson and two under Michelle Lindo-Rice. Two decades of not giving up, even when I felt like it. A lot of hard work, growing in my craft, behind the scenes to get here. KB: What keeps you coming back for more? (i.e. writing, telling stories) ZM: I believe it is a gift from God that I have to cultivate, even though I have bouts of doubt and thoughts of quitting. I can’t. Something or someone inspires me and I keep going. I have so many stories to tell, and I hope to one day have the time to put them on paper. As long as God gives me ideas, I’ll keep going. KB: What advice would you give to an aspiring author? ZM: Read. Read. Read. Read a lot in the genre that you want to write. And, don’t give up. KB: How can readers get in touch with you and find your books? ZM: Readers can find me on social media but the best way to get in touch is through my website. Check out my website and join my newsletter to keep track of my upcoming books. You can find me at www.zoeymariejackson.com. KB: What can we expect from you in the future? ZM: Zoey will have another book coming out later this year with Love Inspired. Michelle has Rivals at Love Creek coming out with Harlequin Special Edition on June 28, 2022 and also another in late August. I am also working on a Valentine’s book and a sequel to The Adoption Surprise for Love Inspired. So, yes, I am busy doing what I love and I am blessed.

Sistah’s Conversations Podcast Interview by Angela Anderson

Letrise Carter is an author, podcast host, media influencer, freelance writer, CEO of Sistah’s Place, and advocate for Black Women’s health. She is well educated, holding a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Accounting & Financial Management, working as an Associate Director with 30 years in accounting. Letrise has an eclectic palate in the creative space and a mission to create a media outlet for voices to be heard. Previously named Sistah’s Place Podcast, the show was rebranded and renamed Sistah’s Conversations Podcast to offer multiple co-host opportunities in entertainment, author spotlights, conversations of money and wealth. There are also girl talks on issues that affect the community and other hot topics of the world. The podcast continues to be a platform for creatives, authors, artists, business owners, philanthropists, and more to have a voice. It is a unique blend of news and entertainment that informs, inspires, and educates all who listen. From art and entertainment to social justice and community activism, health, wellness, and career planning, Sistah’s Conversations Podcast provides an outlet for these conversations to take place. Angela Anderson: How did you get started in podcasting? Letrise Carter: I got started in podcasting after attending a local workshop, “How to take your brand to the next level?” I did my research first and explored the benefits of podcasting for your business. I took another workshop about podcasts to become familiar with how a podcast works and to learn how to apply the tools and resources from the first workshop. AA: What inspired you to start your podcast? LC: Sistah’s Place was interviewing for film, television, theater, music, and literary, online only. There was indeed a void in the podcast and online space. I wanted to reach a bigger audience, and I wanted the indie talent to be heard, not just read about. Besides, I love talking to people, so it was an effective move for me to step “In the Next,” or as my mentor would say to start my podcast. My podcast would evolve from Sistah’s Blog Talk Radio to Sistah’s Conversations Podcast from 2017 to the present.

AA: What is it about the Sistah’s Conversations Podcast that makes it unique? LC: My podcast is unique, as the focus is on Black women in literary, film, television, business, and health who share their journey to be impactful, inspirational, informative, and empowering. Plus, we don’t limit our guests to their position, title, or social media status. AA: Share some of the behind-the-scenes of what is involved with making one podcast episode? LC: We create a show script that is followed by the host, review theme music if it’s needed for a show topic, set a topic to discuss with our guests, and research our guests so we are sharing a story that our audience can relate to. We survey our podcast community as to which questions they would ask a particular guest to ensure our show stays authentic. We take the top two questions from the community that fit the topic and add them to our list of questions for our guests. The show is pre-recorded prior to being aired. We review the pre-recorded shows and make appropriate edits, cutting out any fillers that would lose our listeners. We want to make sure that we focus on the topic at hand. We also add our professional intro/outro to each podcast episode. After each show, we listen to it, take show notes, and critique the show for the next episode. This helps us grow and get better as we adjust based on these notes and critiques. AA: What aspect of the podcast brings you tremendous joy? LC: I love it when my guests share their own testimony that reaches a listener who responds that an episode was helpful, made them cry, was encouraging, or empowering. Those types of responses and feedback bring me tremendous joy.

AA: What can a listener expect to receive when they tune into a Sistah’s Conversations episode? LC: A sisterly conversation is what listeners can expect. It’s like coming to sit on the couch with us with your favorite cup of tea, coffee, or wine while enjoying conversation with your sisters. AA: March is National Women’s History Month. When you reflect on the history of women who have paved the way for doors to be opened, who would you say inspire you? LC: Wow, there are so many women who have inspired me like my forever First Lady Michelle Obama. I have a lengthy list of strong Black women who have inspired me. Then there’s Angela Bassett, Oprah Winfrey, my aunt Clara, my cousin Yalonda, and Ella Curry. AA: As women continue to rise and make moves and make their mark in the world, why is self-care important to include in our day-to-day lives? LC: Self-care is so important because we as Black women forget that we are not “Super Woman”. We need the time to recharge and refuel mentally, emotionally, and physically. We are no good to anyone else if we don’t take care of ourselves. Self-care is EXTREMELY important to incorporate into our daily lives, like we drink coffee or tea each day. Our lives depend on self-care, and it’s what we owe to ourselves. Self-care makes us stronger, not weaker. Self-care makes us available to be reliable to others. AA: What advice would you share with women today? LC: Take and make time for your self-care. It’s okay to step back from the busy life of work, projects, and caring for others. Build time for self-care as a daily part of your routine. Your mental health will thank you. It’s okay to say no, and you don’t need to explain why. AA: What’s next for the Sistah’s Conversations Podcast? LC: Sistah’s Conversations is planning a new season for February 2023 that will be empowering, inspirational, and impactful to our listeners. Meanwhile, throughout 2022, we will highlight the best episodes of 2021 that were informative and empowering. AA: Share with us where and when can people tune in for an episode of Sistah’s Conversations. LC: Sistah’s Conversations Podcast can be heard on Thursdays on Spreaker Radio, Spotify, Apple, iHeart Radio, Amazon Music, Podcast Addict, and Google Podcast.

Rise of A Boss

Interview by Lissha Sadler of Hardcore Grind

Favorite Quote: “You have not won yet because you’re not ready to win. However; When it’s your season, the world will not be ready for what you have to bring.”-Anonymous. Intro: Tacara Wyvette Wilson. also known as Vette Wilson, is an International, Best-selling urban fiction Author from Cleveland, Mississippi. She began her writing career in 2015, after being signed to Diamanté Publications. With 30 published novels under her pen, Vette is becoming more of a household name in the industry. Aside from being an independent and newly signed author under RWP; She is a known ghostwriter and the owner of three successful businesses: a full cosmetics and skincare line entitled “Goddess of Eden.” & Bossette Behavior LLC; A literary and consultant agency. Bossette Behaviors LLC was founded in 2020; it is the sister company to Bossette Behavior Presents, an independent publishing company based on International and National bestselling Author Vette Wilson. Though the company is small, it has professionally serviced and written for over two hundred international and national clients. Vette’s clientele list includes B-List Celebrities, Up and Coming Authors, and New York Times Best Selling Authors. Specifically detailed around the literary world, Bossette also offers Branding, Marketing, Copywriting, and Trade marketing Consultations. LS: A black woman who can write is powerful. What does that power mean to you? What made you want to write? VW: When a black woman, or any woman for that matter, can take her reality and share it with thousands or millions of people, she has one powerful blessing on her hands. Writing for me isn’t a hobby; it’s not about a bag, though I am very grateful for the BAG; but it’s me having a voice and being a voice for every woman who has had her last breathe taken from her, not just physically but mentally as well. Life is and will always be my reasoning behind writing. I write my pain; I write my tears and fears. However, my life is shared via every chapter of a novel I pen. LS: Describe your pen style in five words? What do you admire most about your pen? VW: Uniquely Flawed, Real, and Imperfectly Perfect is how I would sum up my writing style. I say this because I write what others are afraid too. Some of the things I write may be a little too raw or blunt for some readers, and that’s

20

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

okay because I am not everyone’s cup of tea, and neither is my work. I am about Real-life; not every story has a happy ending because life is not a fairytale. LS: Where does your creativity flow? How do you avoid burning out? VW: Music, of course, and real-life situations, a piece of my past, my history, is placed within every novel I have a pen. If anyone wishes to learn me as a person? All they would have to do is, open up a Vette Wilson novel. I pray and take a break to regroup and refresh my mind to avoid burning out. LS: If you could change anything about the literary industry, what would it be? VW: Speaking for myself, I would love to see more and more unity. We are all one big circle, trying to accomplish the same thing, and there is more than enough money for everyone to eat. The urban industry is so underrated and frowned upon, but some very gifted authors are out there. Still, some are boxed in their true potential because they fear there is nothing more significant outside of the urban book industry for their work. LS: You inspire so many people; how does that make you feel? VW: Words can not describe the humbleness I feel when others tell me how much I inspire them. I have been through a lot in this industry, both good and bad. It motivates me to keep going keep writing. I have saved many lives by sharing my health journey and spiritual and self-love journey. You never know who’s watching you or who looks forward to your day-to-day posts etc., to make it through the hours of the day. LS: You have recently signed to have books released under Carl Weber titled “KingPins NYC?” How did this deal come about? What do you want readers to experience when reading “KingPins NYC?”? VW: Yes. My publisher/ Agent, Racquel Williams, actually presented the opportunity. Once that door opened, I wasted no time delivering what was expected of me. Carl Weber liked my work so much that I was given the honor of releasing A Kingpins NYC, which isn’t easy to have the privilege of being a part of, but it was amazing to learn that this would be my first mainstream novel. From this novel, I’d like my readers to understand the many sides to my pen and gain insight into me. Of course, I write in all genres, but Urban fiction is my passion. LS: There is a high cost to pursuing and pulling your vision together. What has been the most challenging part of your journey? VW: Oh my. With each chapter of elevation, you know, you

21

will lose a lot of yourself, which is very good because it’s usually the parts of you that are essential to your growth. I didn’t lose, but God removed seasonal people, places, and things out of my life. It hurts, of course, it does, but you can not take everybody with you, and I had to learn that real fast! Holding on to what God himself is trying to remove will only block that newer level he has waiting for you. LS: You are a very accomplished author and entrepreneur. Tell me about Bossette Behavior? VW: Bossette Behavior was born from a conversation. An old friend of mine was congratulating me on my new journey (s), and he stated, “I’m here for all the bossette behavior.” I asked him to repeat what he said, and he did. I liked that phrase so much that I decided to brand it and make it a successful business. LS: What are your top five most essential elements in creating a powerful brand? VW: Patience, Spirituality, Ambition, Knowledge, and Vision. That’s it, that’s all. LS: Budding authors face many challenges that can be overwhelming and, at times, complex for them to handle. What advice would you give to encourage new authors? VW: Write Release and most of all lead. Lead by your potential

and truths. Write the story, release everything you’re feeling and allow it to bleed into those empty pages and lead. Always inspire to inspire. LS: What can we expect from you next? VW: I have so many business ventures I am currently working on. I have my Vegan wine business, which is still in the phase of getting everything together legally for distribution. There’s also my fashion Boutique; I have come as well. More novels will be released under my publishing company Bossette behavior presents and Rwp. More stories will be available in stores under the Carl Weber brand, so be on the lookout. New York-Based Rapper & Radio Host Interview by The Heat Seekers

Richard Simpson, also known as Chubb Rock (born May 28, 1968 in Brooklyn, New York) is a New York-based rapper who released several successful hip hop albums in the early 1990s. A National Merit Scholar, Chubb Rock dropped out of college to pursue his musical career. Discovered and produced by his first cousin DJ / Producer Howie Tee, Chubb Rock first appeared on the national scene with his 1988 self-titled debut Chubb Rock and 1989’s And the Winner is...[1] The latter produced the minor hit “Ya Bad Chubbs” which garnered air play on Yo! MTV Raps during that time. His 1990 release entitled The One reached No. 13 on Billboard’s Top Hip-Hop/R&B chart for that year. Three singles from that release, “Treat ‘Em Right”, “Just The Two of Us” and “The Chubbster”, made it to No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rap Singles chart list for the same year. The following year saw the release of I Gotta Get Mine, Yo, a release that featured guest performances from Grand Puba Maxwell and Poke. This release also helped fledgling music producers Trackmasters, on their rise to prominence, as the group handled production duties on the recording. Chubb Rock also made an appearance on MC Serch’s 1992 song “Back to the Grill.” Chubb Rock was a member of the 1995 incarnation of the Crooklyn Dodgers, a hip hop act that also featured OC and Jeru the Damaja. His backup dancers started another group, A.T.E.E.M, which released its debut, A Hero Ain’t Nothin’ But A Sandwich, in 1992 on Select Records. In 1996, he appeared on the Red Hot Organization’s compilation album America is Dying Slowly, alongside Wu-Tang Clan, Coolio, and Fat Joe, among others. The album, meant to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic among African American men, was heralded as a masterpiece by The Source magazine. Chubb Rock’s work in the 2000s has been limited to only a few songs. He appears on a song for Raptivism Records’ “No More Prisons” project with Lil’ Dap of Group Home and Ed O.G., and also worked with Mr. Len on the song “Dummy

Smacks”, where he says, “Some people thought I was gone... never that!” He made an appearance alongside Vast Aire on the 2007 Zimbabwe Legit album House of Stone with the song “Wake Up”. In 2001 he appeared in the soundtrack for Wet Hot American Summer on the song Summer in America. In 2008, his single “Treat ‘em Right” was ranked number 82 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop. Chubb Rock also released “Obama We Believe” in support of President Obama. His most recent appearance was on the K’naan single “ABC’s”. He also collaborated with Polish rapper eMCeeM on a track for his album To dopiero poczatek. In February 2009, the single “Back In” was released, from the album Bridging The Gap, a collaboration with Wordsmith, released on July 14, 2009. Chubb Rock is featured in the single “Summertime Anthem” by Eric Roberson in which they filmed the music video on the streets of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, New York City where he credited his wife and manager, KeKe “Diamond” Simpson, for putting the duo together. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

25

Chubb Rock also released an EP in September 2011. That year, he also appeared with his childhood sweetheart and wife of 24 years, KeKe Simpson on the NBC game show The Marriage Ref. Chubb Rock moved to Atlanta and had a radio show with Silas “SiMan” Alexander on Atlanta’s Majic 107.5/97.5. On October 26, 2018 they left the station and later started a syndicated afternoon radio show. From Wikipedia. The Heat Seekers: Tell us about yourself? Who is Chubb Rock? Chubb Rock: I am the son of Stanley and Georgia Simpson both Jamaican and Born American citizens. Both my parents were extremely supportive of my endeavors in the music industry. I had a great childhood filled with lots of laughs, a lot of family fun time, and great friends. I would probably describe it as almost perfect. THS: How did you get your start in music/rapping? CR: My cousin hitman Howie Tee started it off he was the neighborhood DJ (Count Disco) and his crew (thesureshot4) and he got into producing and I was just his student learning from him borrowing his drum machines I was introduced to rapping by my childhood friend David Witt between him and my brothers Robswinga and my brother Doug who we called Swanny D we went to the Club Roxy one night to see Howie perform and saw all these incredible acts like the Fearless 4 and The Masterdon funk committee Dougie Fresh the force mc’s who later became the Force MD’s and I knew this is what I wanted to do with my life. Practicing started the morning after that show.

THS: What made you decide to be serious about being a rapper/song writer? CB: I fell in love with the culture of hip-hop it spoke to me it was creative it gave us kids in the inner city a Voice it was something that we can waive our hands and say look what we built look what we created there’s nothing else like it in the world it was an honor to be part of that journey. THS: Did you emulate anyone that you admired back then? CR: No, everyone back then had their own style had their own diction their own cadence that’s what made that era so remarkable the differences of styles THS: Which people or books have had the most influence on your career and why? CR: The people that had the most influence on my career of people you wouldn’t’t know my parents my sister my brothers certain friends later on my children. THS: What would you say is the #1 key to success in the entertainment industry? CR: Persistence and consistency Has to be the key and the lock of success in the entertainment industry. Only with persistence and patience can you have the time to tweak and master your craft. Hip-hop is the only genre at least from my era where success wasn’t judged by how many records you sold but judged by your skill other emcees acknowledging your ability with the mic that is success. THS: Tell us about your radio station journey? CR: In 2000 a station named jammin 105 in New York was flipping to hip-hop and R&B and was called power 105 it was the return of Ed Lover Dr. Dre and Lisa G to New York morning radio. The program Director was looking for a New Yorker for the weekends and Lisa G recommended me, to this day I have no idea why she recommended me but her kindness led me to image that station with my voice and then learn the intricacies of radio from the program Director Michael Saunders and his tutelage. Then, that led me to the afternoons and so the journey began THS: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it? CR: Too many failures to list I learned something from everyone of them so of those failures I made twice

and learned a different lesson the second time life is about failure we cannot learn without failure and the biggest lesson with failure is that you have to continue. THS: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps? CR: Just like love you have to believe in yourself first I can’t just be your parents believe in you or your significant other believes in you or friends believe in you that’s great but you have to believe in yourself first you have to be able to take risks and criticism comes with this criticism gets you angry or defeats you this is not the industry for you. THS: What does a typical day in your week look like? CR: It starts at 4 AM preparation to get on the air at 6 AM the show ends at 10 AM other voice work and production responsibilities end around 3 PM and then it’s time to get involved with my personal life with my beautiful family. THS: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business? CR: I don’t concentrate on the waves of the business I concentrate on what my goals are my dreams and what my audience needs from me the business of entertainment is usually driven by powers that usually don’t invite us to the table anyway so like Shirley Chisholm I’ll bring my lawn chairs to my own table. THS: What are you working on that you can talk about? New music? Radio? CR: Always working on new music but my music is geared to the grown and sexy to the fans that have been with me since 86 they still want to party they still want to hear the great lyrics so my concentration is to give them what they want and love about Hiphop As far as radio still building the syndication creating new shows with other hosts that I will guide and of course the ultimate goal is to own stations. Please list your website and/or your social media platforms. @chubblive:IG @chubbrockshow:Facebook www.ChubbRockshow.com

THS: Tell us about your outreach to he community and how you help others in the music business? CR: My mentor SiMan Baby was a person that stressed me about doing things in the community he would take me to schools for career day made, sure I was involved in other things going on in the inner-city homeless shelters etc… without community engagement we are nothing THS: What’s your all time favorite song lyric? CR: My favorite rap Song is Slick Rick’s “Children’s Story”, the style the lyrics and of course that beat. As far as a chubbrock song, my favorite has to be “caught up”. It was my first produced record that I did on my own. THS: Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you? CR: I am a work in progress, I love the fact that I am still learning sometimes. Some of the youngins will call me an OG and I don’t think I’ve made it to that status, yet. I’m still trying to finish with an incredible report card, before I am eligible for that final transcript. Extraordinary Storytelling That Touches the Heart and Soul: Author Vanessa Miller Interview by Angela Anderson

Vanessa Miller is a best-selling author of more than fifty books. Her love for reading and writing started early, as a child. Fast forward, Vanessa is an eclectic writer of poetry, short stories, stage plays, and novels. She beautifully crafts stories with elements of redemption, healing, and hope. Her creativity and gift from God aid her in writing extraordinary stories designed to touch her readers’ hearts and souls. Several of her books have appeared on Essence Magazine’s Bestseller’s List and received awards like “Best Christian Fiction Mahogany Award and “Red Rose Award of Excellence in Christian Fiction”. Whether writing Christian Fiction, Women’s Fiction, or Romance novels, her unique mastery of storytelling with an inspirational, heartfelt tone and edginess that keeps you on the edge of your seat; turning the pages for more, is not missed. The Heat Seekers Magazine had an opportunity to speak with Vanessa Miller and talk about her writing journey and her new release, Something Good. Angela Anderson: When did you know you wanted to become a writer? Vanessa Miller: I was nine years old, sitting on my grandmother’s porch listening to my father tell me a story about something that seemed so beautiful. But when he finished the story, I discovered it was about a rat. From that very moment, I knew that I was born to take the hideous things of this world and make them beautiful. I was born to write redemption stories. AA: What do you enjoy about being a writer? VM: I sit down at my desk, open my computer, and ask myself who these characters are. As I discover what makes each character tick, I get closer and closer to that moment where God steps in and changes my character’s whole world. This is the part I really enjoy… the part of the book when God takes over. I love writing inspirational women’s fiction! AA: You have written over fifty books, which is an amazing accomplishment. What is something you know now but wish you learned sooner? VM: This is a good question. I hope my readers see growth in my books because I have been working hard. I now realize that I need to take my time with my characters and develop them so that the reader sees the good, the bad, and the struggles that

AA: This is an exciting month for you. Your debut novel with Thomas Nelson, Something Good, will be released on March 8, 2022. What is the inspiration behind this story? VM: One of the issues in Something Good is distracted driving. I don’t know about where you live, but in Charlotte, NC, it is a real thing. In 2015 I was hit head-on as I was driving home. The car driver that hit my car had bent down to pick up his cell phone, and he lost control of his vehicle and hit me head-on. My ankle was broken, and I have not walked the same since. But I am thankful that I can walk. So, I wanted to highlight the distracted driving issue in the book and pray that I cause someone to stop and think before doing things that will distract them from paying attention while driving. I also wanted to write a story where it seemed as if everything had gone wrong, causing the characters to lose hope. But then, one prayer becomes the catalyst that begins to turn situations around. AA: If you could describe “Something Good” in three words, what would they be? VM: Something Good in three words…Beauty for ashes.

the character has to overcome. I’m also learning how to provide the setting in a scene and understand why it is important to acclimate the reader to each new scene. AA: What are some of your writing must-haves when you are working on a manuscript? VM: One thing I need when working on my manuscript is my computer (I used to write my stories longhand thirty years ago, and never want to go back to that). Next, I would say that I need my outline and character bios to understand where the story is supposed to go. Oh, and a comfortable chair. I can’t leave that out. AA: If you had to give one piece of advice to new authors, what would it be? VM: I would definitely say to spend time learning the craft. The best thing a writer can do for their career is write a great book. Because when you write a great book, the readers will tell others about it, and before you know it, your fan base will grow. AA: What is one thing most readers don’t know about you? VM: One thing that readers might not know is how much I love breakfast, especially omelets, link sausage, pink grapefruit, and green tea with lemon. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.

AA: March is Women’s History Month with a 2022 theme of “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope”. What comes to mind when you think about how far women have come in society and the accomplishments of women trailblazing the paths of those coming after? VM: I think of God’s grace and His mighty love for women. We are not just survivors; we are out here thriving and getting it done. I’m thankful for the women who came before us, blazed trails, and created pathways that we now follow. AA: Who are some influential women in your life who have helped shape and molded you into the woman you are today? VM: I would first have to say my mother. She was the kindest woman I have ever known. She taught me how to be respectful of others. Even though she left this world way too soon, and I have been without her for over a decade, I still haven’t forgotten how special she was and how blessed I was to have her in my life. There have also been countless teachers, preachers, and friends who have helped me and encouraged me along the way. These women are sheros in my book, and I thank God for each of them. AA: What is next for Vanessa Miller? VM: Well, Something good releases on March 8, 2022. After that, I have another book that will release in November of 2022. The title of that book is What We Found in Hallelujah. And that book is a wild ride. I hope my readers will enjoy both books this year. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Marvel- I cared. by DAViD SPENCER

they would try to change the story where all they had to do was tell the story. They inherited fans. The avengers got it right in this regard for the most part. We saw the characters we knew and loved.

X-Men, the animated television series,

was my introduction to the world of Marvel. Even now, I can hear the theme music playing in my head as I write. I remember the first episode I watched - the X-Men rescued Jubilee from sentinels at the mall. The world of X-Men dealt with many social issues (racism, classism, religion, politics, etc.), and these heroes were often rejected and hated by the people they were protecting. The world of X-Men was more complicated than the typical hero vs. villain dynamic. Heroes were good and the villains evil. Mutants were born with the mutant gene- no accidents or elaborate backstories about how they got their powers. They were misunderstood, judged, and attacked simply because they were born. It mirrored the human condition and reminded me of the black experience in the United States. It was relatable. I connected to it more than other cartoons I watched then. My fascination with X-Men led me to check out other animated series like the hulk, fantastic four, Iron Man, and Spider Man. Although none of those shows impacted me like X-Men, I was a Marvel fan.

My concern now is they have killed off that core group of heroes. This is where they could have taken a note from DC. DC has given us many versions of Superman and Batman, and we don’t care because we love those characters, not necessarily the people who played them. Robert Downey Jr. was an incredible iron man. Of course, he would get too old to play iron man or pursue other interests. Marvel should have waited a few years and recast iron man. Of course, we’d debate who played him better, but at least we would still have an iron man on the screen. Marvel kills the main heroes and is now trying to introduce heroes that most don’t know or care about. The Avengers film series was brilliant on so many levels, but now Marvel doesn’t know where to go from there. I cared but not so much these days. Are you a Marvel fan? Do you like where the franchise is headed? David Spencer is a communications professional, gifted singer, public speaker, and author. His voice can be heard loud and clear, regardless of the medium he chooses. He is responsible for influencing the people around him through his works.

I was very excited when Marvel started bringing its characters to the big screen. I only wished the directors and writers were fans who tried to stay authentic to how the comics portrayed the characters. Many earlier Marvel movies weren’t that great be cause

For The Love of Great Tasting Coffee to Smooth Java Beans Interview by Angela Anderson

Dalia Florea Williams of Smooth Java Beans is a coffee enthusiast. She has a deep passion and love for great-tasting coffee. Dalia has had the pleasure of tasting various coffees from around the world and enjoying the experience. Her love and enjoyment of coffee, from the smell to the rich taste and delightful feeling that coffee gives, have deemed themselves assets to her as she joined the coffee industry. Having the opportunity to craft and own their own special blends with Smooth Java Beans is a bonus. Dalia feels that enjoying good coffee is more than taste; it’s an experience. It is an experience that Smooth Java Beans prides itself in giving to each customer with each bag of quality roasted coffee beans. Angela Anderson: What inspired the birth of Smooth Java Beans? Dalia Florea Williams: The short version; is simply for the love of great-tasting coffee. I got married in the summer of 2020 and had not relocated to New York just yet. I was standing in my kitchen talking with my husband over the phone. He mentioned that the founders of a different coffee brand, one of which is an award-winning roaster, were looking for someone who might be interested in dabbing in his or her own special blends. At the time, I was in the process of retiring from my federal job. I thought this might be something that I would like to do as I am a coffee enthusiast and would love to start my own business. I said, “Babe, I would love to do this.” Once I relocated to New York in the fall of 2020, my husband set up a meeting with one of the partners of the other coffee brand so that ideas could be discussed. AA: What is the mission of Smooth Java Beans? DFW: Our mission is to satisfy coffee lovers with the best-tasting quality beans in every bag. AA: What’s the story behind the name Smooth Java Beans? Was it the first choice for the name of your coffee business? DFW: Actually, Smooth Java Beans was not the first choice for the business’s name. The day that I moved from Alexandria, Virginia, back to New York, we were in the car headed to New York, and I figured since it was a long drive, why not throw out some names. I threw out several names, but there was one name that my husband and I both liked and thought would be

36

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

a good name for the company. Bean Bag Coffee was the chosen name, hahaha. In fact, I told the partner of the other coffee brand that Bean Bag Coffee would be the company’s name. However, once I did the research, I found out that the name had been taken. We had to come up with another name. Upon thinking about the flavor and blends for the coffee, “smooth” popped up. Also, my husband is a professional saxophonist who plays jazz, the name Smooth Java Beans made perfect sense. AA: What aspect of the business do you enjoy? DFW: Being a small business owner, I wear many hats in the business. The most enjoyable is packing the boxes to be shipped. Once my customers receive their coffee, I know they will enjoy the fresh smell and flavorful taste. AA: What can customers expect from the Smooth Java Beans brand? DFW: Customers can expect loyalty, high-quality coffee, friendliness, and great customer service. AA: What makes Smooth Java Beans unique? DFW: Smooth Java Beans is not a drop-shipping coffee company where the people who are selling the coffee are not aware of where the beans are coming from or what their customers

are receiving. We use quality beans that have been carefully selected and perfectly roasted in small batches to ensure fresh coffee is delivered directly to our customers. Our beans are not over-roasted or burnt to hide the imperfections of low-quality beans. AA: For the coffee lovers out there, how would you describe the Smooth Java Beans taste? DFW: I would like to say that our coffee tastes smooth, bold, and flavorful, as it has been described by many of our customers. We have four different blends; light roast, medium roast, dark roast, and a medium roast decaf for those who love coffee but cannot have the caffeine. AA: March is National Women’s History Month. When you reflect on the history of women in business, and those who paved the way for doors to be opened, what comes to mind as a woman and business owner setting your own trailblazing moments for others to follow? DFW: That’s a great question. I hope that seeing my business flourish will encourage other women to embrace their dreams and have the courage to pursue them. AA: What advice would you share with small business owners who are just getting started? DFW: I would say to have a clear and firm mission by trying to determine the reason to start a business, have faith in yourself, and embrace failure. I would also add to be sure to understand your target customers and existing market and not be discouraged when there are small setbacks. AA: What’s next for Smooth Java Beans? DFW: We hope to get into retail stores and maybe brew up a specialty coffee for the Fall season. AA: How can people connect with Smooth Java Beans? DFW: We are on social media platforms; Instagram @smoothjavabeans, Facebook, and Twitter @smoothjavabeans. They can also visit our website at: www.smoothjavabeans.com. The newsletter is also available for those who want to stay in touch with Smooth Java Beans and receive exclusive information on the latest news. Actor on the Rise Interview by David R. Navarro

David R. Navarro: When did you first get involved in acting? Byron L. Hopkins: My very first acting experience was in the theatre in middle school. We were Putting up Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest” and I had the honor of playing the loveable and drunk Jester Trinculo. It was the first time I heard the English language spoken in such an amazing way, I was hooked right away. I stayed in the theatre all the way up until high school when sports became more of a focus for me. Plus, I had gone from 5’9 to 6’3 over the summer and basketball was calling and the wonderfully loud voice of the theatre was slowly drowned out with screaming fans in bleachers. But, I would return to my first love (Acting) eventually. David R. Navarro: What or Who inspired you to pursue a career as an actor? Byron L. Hopkins: Well, early on I would have to say, Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte. They were definitely before my time but my mother loved them and I was so intrigued watching these two amazingly talented men on the screen who looked like me. They weren’t pimps or slaves or anything like that, they were leading men and darn good ones at that. I watched them and thought to myself “that’s gonna. be me one day”. Of course, id find out about Denzel and Will Smith as I grew older, but those 2 men were my idols. Then, I added Will and Denzel to my personal acting Mt Rushmore, later. David R. Navarro: What have been your biggest achievements in Films, TV, Voiceover, and/or Theater? Byron L. Hopkins: So, one of my biggest achievements is actually in the Voiceover world, but... I can’t talk about it just yet because it isn’t slated to come out for a few months. But trust me its amazing and a dream come true and I am extremely excited about it. But I can tell you one of my most fun roles was playing a Navy Seal in the TV show, StartUp on Crackle. I did my own stunts, I ran around and played in the dirt and shot weapons with a few of my friends who are also ex-military. So, yes that was a great day of shooting. David R. Navarro: I’m sure you have met a lot of celebrities along the way. Would you share 1 or 2 of your favorite stories with us? Byron L. Hopkins: I have met and worked with some pretty amazing people. I think one of my favorite stories is when I met Will Smith. I had booked a non-speaking role as one of

the Orcs on the Netflix movie, Bright. We were all sitting around waiting for the next scene and I hear a familiar laugh and I turn around and bump right into WILL FREAKING SMITH! After all the life left my body for a second, I introduced myself and he greeted me and smiled and asked me if I was being treated ok on set. I said yes and he said good, let me know if that changes. Watching him work for a full day was amazing, it was a masterclass in acting. At the end of the day, I was able to say thank you to him and he shook my hand and told me good job and started to walk away. I yelled to him and said we’re gonna do a movie together one day. He stopped and turned and smiled and said, we just did man and walked over to his trailer. That was and still is one of my favorite days in acting, for sure. David R. Navarro: What has been your ideal character, so far? And why? Byron L. Hopkins: I don’t think I’ve played my ideal character as of yet. I’ve played some fun ones don’t get me wrong, but I am an action junkie and a comic book nerd at the same time. I want to be a Villan in a blockbuster action or superhero film. I’ll take Marvel or DC I’m not picky, lol. I’m in great shape, I have a Military background with the Marine,s I’m weapons trained, I box, I stay active with running and weightlifting, so yah I’m ready to go. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

41

David R. Navarro: How has your acting evolved since you first became involved in the film industry? Byron L. Hopkins: I think as an actor if you’re not evolving and getting better then why are you doing this. I use to think I needed big or loud movement to portray my emotions. I focus more now on the subtleties that draw in the audience. a small movement a shift in my body language or just a shift in my eyes can say as much as a yell can. David R. Navarro: If you were forced to choose only one, which emotion, more than any other drives you to stay in this tough business? Is it joy, anger, desire, passion, or pride and why? Byron L. Hopkins: Definitely Passion. That is the fuel that I put in my tank every day even if it’s just enough to get me to the next day my Passion drives me. I mix the passion with the desire and those two get me up in the morning and help me continue to dream. That and my faith is what I’m all about. David R. Navarro: Which ingredient do you think makes you special and unique as a performing artist in an industry overflowing with new faces and ideas? Byron L. Hopkins: Empathy and creativity for sure. Empathy is defined ed as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Not just receiving words you memorized for a character but really feeling what that character feels and breathing life into them, giving them a back story that’s not on the script. David R. Navarro: What has been your biggest challenge as an actor? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?. Byron L. Hopkins: I would say my biggest challenge is not letting my losses go to my heart and my wins go to my head. Always staying balanced and being able to enjoy the moment but know that this isn’t the end goal yet is what helps me overcome my challenges. David R. Navarro: A common phrase in the industry is, “you must suffer for your art”. Do you agree with this statement? If so, how have you suffered for your art? Byron L. Hopkins: I disagree about the suffering part. I believe we have to constantly push through and stay motivated but suffer is to go through something and not love it. Now yes do certain days make you want to quit abso freaking lately. But we’re not suffering we are serving and waiting to thrive in our career.

42

David R. Navarro: How do you feel the Internet has impacted the film business? Byron L. Hopkins: I think its a good thing. Never have we ever

been able to just pick up a camera, or a cellphone and start recording and post it to things like youtube and Instagram and possibly have millions of people see it. Even with my training and acting degree and all of that it really comes down to can you act? are you right for the part? answer yes to those and it doesn’t matter how your discovered just be ready. David R. Navarro: If you could change anything about the film industry, what would it be? Byron L. Hopkins: That a major Director would just knock on my door and offer me a huge role lol. No, but seriously I think having more diversity in front of and behind the camera is a huge help. I believe that will help us to tell different stories and we can see life through other people’s lenses. We’re getting better but we’re not there yet. David R. Navarro: If you could give 3 tips of advice to an up-and-coming actor, what would they be? Byron L. Hopkins: 1. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or ask questions., 2. Be you nobody can be you but you so be the best you that you can be., 3. Every day make sure you are doing something that gets you closer to your goals. David R. Navarro: What projects are you currently working on... that you can talk about? Byron L. Hopkins: Lol, I’m glad you said what I can “actually talk about” becAuse those NDA’s are no joke man. Well, I’m always auditioning but currently, I am pitching a show That I wrote to a few networks right now. Also, I am working with Amazon on a few things in the Voiceover world. My beautiful Finance Paige Bryan and I are working on our podcast “Me 2 We” and looking forward to launching that. David R. Navarro: What’s next for you? Byron L. Hopkins: Well hopefully Marvel or DC will read this interview realize my awesomeness and call me to suit up for a super Villan or superhero film I’m not picky. But until then I will be acting up a storm on a few of everyone’s favorite tv shows coming up (if we can continue to film after COVID) and look out for me to voice a couple of characters on Netflix as well. But that’s as much as I can say. David R. Navarro: How can fans-to-be follow your career? Byron L. Hopkins: Easy you can go to my website www.byronlhopkins.com or just type in ByronLHopkins on Facebook Twitter and Instagram and I will pop up. I would love to hear from everyone especially all of my fellow creatives who might have questions that I can answer. Last month I visited Vegas with my friend for his birthday weekend. We went to a French restaurant for dinner recommended by our Uber Driver. They were very busy and it took a minute to get waited on but the server was so pleasant. He said that since Covid happened, 80% of the menus was the same and including himself, only four employees are the originals who have been there the longest. My friend, Kelvin and his brother Charles had the Salmon baked in lemon butter sauce with veggies with a side wedge salad and spring mix salad. I had the creamy Cauliflower soup with fried tiny capers that have been soaked in peanut oil for 24 hours. Our server said that many people don’t catch asking about it but I told him I was a food blogger and I try to notice these things. I’ve only been to one French restaurant many years ago and I had the mussels. So this was my same choice as l have only had mussels once at another French restaurant. They were soaked in white wine butter and garlic sauce and the flavors were delicious! And guess what was the side choice? French fries! Yes, they served them in this fancy restaurant and that was very interesting to me. However they were very good too with a crispy edge to them. Charles tried the mussels but Kelvin could only barely taste one. He has us laughing so hard! I won’t mention what he said. But it was a very warm and classy atmosphere. So classy that they changed the silverware out after we ate our soup and salads. This was a wonderful experience and we all enjoyed it. The restaurant is called the Bouchon and is located in the Venetian Hotel on the main strip of Vegas. The architectural was so beautiful and the portraits displayed were breathtaking. If you like a taste of something different you will definitely have to try Bouchon when traveling to Vegas. “Tasteful Tips & Trips with Robin” is not just an ordinary food blog!
