Royal Jordanian adds Maldives scheduled charter in Sep/Oct 2019 Royal Jordanian and Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, announced a new codeshare partnership which will provide their customers with greater access to key leisure and business destinations in Asia, Australia, Europe, North Africa and Canada.
This is the first such partnership between the two airlines, who offer multiple daily services between their hubs in Amman and Abu Dhabi. The partnership will see RJ place its ‘RJ’ code on Etihad Airways services from Amman to Abu Dhabi and vice versa, and then from the UAE capital to Brisbane and Seoul. Subject to government approvals, RJ will also place its code on Etihad flights from Abu Dhabi to, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calicut, Cochin, Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Trivandrum, Manila, Beijing and Shanghai. Stefan Pichler, Royal Jordanian’s President and CEO, said: “We are delighted to have Etihad Airways beside our codeshare partners who help us grow in different markets. This move is bound to satisfy the
needs of many RJ customers wishing to fly to Asia and Australia”. He also added: “RJ customers should seize the opportunity to give their partners, families and friends high value, desirable gifts made available by RJ at attractive prices”. Pichler urged customers to take advantage of RJ’s great connectivity on its route network, or on those of the oneworld airline members. Tony Douglas, Group Chief Executive Officer, Etihad Aviation Group, said: “This partnership reinforces the deep cultural, tourism and trade connections between the UAE and Jordan, and opens up a new world of opportunities for our customers. According to routesonline, Royal Jordanian in September and October
2019 plans to operate scheduled charter service to The Maldives, where it will offer Amman – Male nonstop service. From 27SEP19 to 16OCT19, Boeing 787-8 aircraft will operate this route once a week. Both share the common values of genuine Arabian hospitality and service, combined with the nextgeneration fleets, enviable reputations for efficiency and reliability, and a
combined network spanning the globe. This is the first phase of what we hope is a long-lasting and expanding partnership.” Royal Jordanian, which celebrated its 55th anniversary last December has served Abu Dhabi since 1970 and today flies nine weekly flights, with a twice daily frequency in the summer. Etihad Airways has been serving the Abu Dhabi to Amman route since December 2003, and currently operates two daily flights between the two capitals using a mix of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and Airbus A320 aircraft.

Soneva Fushi If Robinson Crusoe styled a stay that hinted at his desert-island experience while being fancy enough to keep an oligarch living his preferred lifestyle, this is it. Soneva Fushi is a private island featuring fifty-seven private eco-chic villas, each tucked away with their own stretch of beach hidden among dense foliage — surrounded by a magnificent house reef in the Baa Atoll Unesco Biosphere Reserve. You can swing lazily from your private hammock of the villa, and since the coral reef is shallow and only a few steps away from shore, you can jump right in with your battle gear of fins and snorkel. Take in a diverse marine life of schools of black and yellow striped sweetlips; butterfly fish; seemingly to their own lazy circadian clock.
Scene-stealing design combined with an incredible location make for an enticing combination, is the appeal of Anantara Kihavah, tucked away in Baa Atoll, on the doorstep of Hanifaru Bay, declared as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011, highlighting its fragile beauty and making it an especially appealing spot for divers or snorkelers. It starts when you arrive on the island via a small seaplane, which gracefully belly-dives into the turquoise waters after a half-hour journey from mainland Malé and delivers you directly to the jetty. As soon as your feet hit terra firma and you realize that all you can hear are the waves, with your palatial pad sitting above the water, and the horizon everywhere you look, you’ll go through the following mental stages of island life: joy, confusion-at-the-joy, excitement, joy-at-the-excitement, calm and finally into a state of what can only be described as a sort of blissful, docile dumbness.

International Women’s Day 2019: Think equal, build smart, innovate for change
With technology and innovation playing an integral role in our everyday lives, it is not easy to imagine development in the 21st century without it. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day (8 March), “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change”, explores the ways in which innovation can work for gender equality, boost investment in gender-responsive social systems, and enhance public services and infrastructure that meet the needs of women and girls. The achievement of the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires transformative shifts, integrated approaches and new solutions, particularly when it comes to advancing gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. Based on current trajectories, existing interventions will not suffice to achieve a Planet
50-50 by 2030. Innovative approaches that disrupt “business as usual” are central to removing structural barriers and ensuring that no woman and no girl is left behind. UN Women, in collaboration with United Nations World Tourism Organization, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the World Bank Group and Amadeus, released preliminary findings of the Global Report on Women in Tourism, Second Edition . The initial results indicate that across the private and public sectors women are harnessing the potential of tourism to become financially independent, challenge stereotypes and start their own businesses.
Research has also shown more and more women are challenging gender stereotypes in the sector. In Morocco, women have been issued tour guide licenses for the first time. An airline in the UK has doubled the number of female pilots they employ. Uganda’s Hotel Owner’s Association is now led by its first female CEO, Jean Byamugisha.

February 2019 roughly marked two-and-a-half years for Velaa Private Island’s Coral Restoration Project. In 2016, a global bleaching event affected almost 60% of the Maldivian reefs. The resort hopes to help speed up the recovery of the house reef by restoring the ecological integrity, conducting scientific research on nursery and transplant progress and testing the concept of midwater floating nurseries, which can hold over 10,000 coral fragments at full capacity. By increasing the amount of coral on the island’s house reef, the project team intends to attract new recruits, and increase the abundance of fish and apex predators and help stabilize the reef. Frankly Speaking Why is Maldives perceived as an expensive holiday destination by foreign travel agents? Is it because we are unable to market other products effectively?
Mohamed Mirsaad
Shaaz Waleed
Managing Director
Group CEO
Travel Connection Maldives
Resort Life Maldives
It is because we do not have a choice of products and needs diversification, efficient policies and regulations.
Many new segments of tourism among Maldivian destinations could be promoted within the Maldives. New types of activities could enable a segment for budget holidays.
Although Maldives is widely seen as an expensive holiday destination, many foreign travel agencies continue promoting and recommending Maldives to their customers considering: • Maldives retains its unrivalled luxurious impression that keeps on attracting those seeking comfort and tranquility - in addition to a lot of romance. • Maldives is a place that would make anyone visiting experience its calm and serene environment, where anyone could simply gaze at its white-sand beaches, crystalline lagoons and azure waters. • Despite the Maldives being a popular honeymoon destination, it also receives a lot of attraction from family vacationers. • Maldives is also a perfect avenue for food fanatics, history buffs and adventurers. • International hotel brands combined with an array of world-class services are what any travel agent would persuade their valued customers to choose Maldives as their holiday destination.
Active holidays for budget market such as night camping, crossing atolls on barefoot in atolls like Gaaf Dhaal and Gaaf Alifu could be themed as “Walking across the largest island chain”. Maldives itself could be branded as a summer destination.
Mohamed Firaq Managing Director Inner Maldives Holidays
We have not been able to market the Maldives adequately, resulting the perception of Maldives as an expensive destination by foreign travel agents, especially with all the changes that has evolved in the past 6 years.
Mohamed Ali Managing Director Moodhu Holidays
Abdulla Suood President
MMPRC needs to put a lot of effort to change the perception. Maldives is no longer an expensive destination. We are a mix, and we have everything now, from budget to super luxury.
Maldives Association of Travel Agents & Tour Operators (MATATO)
Maldives has different types of products; Resorts, Guesthouses, Safari Boats, Hotels. In recent years, we have focused too much only on wellness and spa tourism. We need to put more effort on diverse segments.
Yoosuf Riffath CEO of Capital Travel & Tours President, Association of Travel Agents (ATA)
I think MMPRC and Tourism Ministry has a good plan and will deliver things in time. Flights are expensive. Qatar Airways had airfares at US$ 500 three years ago from Malé to Europe, today the same route with the same airline is over US$ 1200, transfers are very high and continue to be a monopoly with prices between US$ 450 to US$ 550 by seaplane. Tickets on domestic flights start at US$ 350, yet flights with in Europe are between US$ 60 to US$ 80.
Ibrahim Shahid President
Operators contract US$ 600 to US$ 1200 per couple, per day on 4 to 5 star resorts, and a week later drops 30% to 40% off.
National Boating Association of Maldives
Maldives is blessed with the ocean. We need to focus more on selling Ocean based tourism than wellness and other areas. Safari boats have been in the industry for more than 40 years , diverse tourism promotions must include this industry. Ahmed Zubair Adam Managing Director Blue Horizon
Resorts and other products in Maldives are different, we have to get our marketing right to address issues2018.pdf and bring necessary changes to cater to the needs. Asia Tradingthe IC-December 1 11/30/2018 10:45:47 AM
