PICTURE PERFECT THE ICONIC MICHAEL CHILDERS BY DOMINIC SILVA
For the past several decades, photographer Michael Childers has captured the essence of Hollywood’s most famous faces. The roster of artists featured in his iconic portraits is a virtual who’s who’s of the Hollywood elite: Julie Christie, Catherine Deneuve, Clint Eastwood, Richard Gere, Dennis Hopper, Rock Hudson, Grace Jones, Shirley MacLaine, Groucho Marx, Demi Moore, Paul Newman, Laurence Olivier, Michelle Pfeiffer, Isabella Rosellini, John Travolta, Andy Warhol, Mae West, and Natalie Wood to name a few. Childers also shot on-set still photography during the production of countless films over the years. He captured the making of such films as Midnight Cowboy (1969), The Day of the Locust (1975), Marathon Man (1976), Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980), The Year of Living Dangerously (1983), The Terminator (1984) and Torch Song Trilogy (1988) among others. A new exhibit featuring the works of Michael Childers and Gordon Clark opened in December at Joshua Tree Gallery of Contemporary Art to critical acclaim. For the new exhibition, “Emergence”, the Michael Childers’ exhibited works include his stunning newest body of work, Nude Fusions (2021), his provocative and never-before- exhibited White Party (2002) collection, fantastic selections from his LA Drag Ball (1974) that was previously exhibited at the Palm Springs Art Museum, and several of his famous portraits of Hollywood celebrities. In addition to the exhibit, Childers will be honored at the CV Rep Luminary Luncheon on February 17. We sat down with him to discuss the stories behind his iconic images, his latest show, and highlights over the course of his career. Thank you Michael for taking the time to sit with us, let’s get started. Have you always wanted to be a photographer? And when did you realize this would be the career path you would take? Michael: My interest in photography in high school for the newspaper and the annual and then when I went to UCLA I studied

photography and many of my fellow classmates were actors and musicians who needed head shots. I was working my way through college doing headshots and then I would do book jackets, one for Ray Bradbury then I did TV Guide for Kaye Ballard and that’s where it all began…quite early on. What was you first paying job as a photographer? Michael: My first great paying job was the book jackets for Ray Bradbury, author, and screenwriter. One of the most celebrated 20th- century American writers. Many artists rely on a muse for inspiration, did you, and if so, who?
Avedon, Horst P. Horst, and Irving Penn his simplicity of black and white. That shaped my work. Who were your favorite and least favorite celebrities you have photographed? Michael: I like to deal with my favorites. There were people who were wonderful. Natalie Wood was amazing in front of a camera. Every angle was good. Henry Rollins the rock star. I loved Ringo Starr he was full of great ideas, and he is a photographer. Anyone who brought something to the table, where we could mutually build a great photo session. Is there anyone you haven’t photographed that you wished you had?
Michael: I had my idols, the God’s of photography like Richard
JANUARY 2022 7
COVER Michael: There are some great young artists and singers and actors, Jason Stuart. I saw “Tick, Tick, Boom” recently and loved Andrew Garfield, so much in that. So, many young, exciting, talented artists, actors and musicians coming up. I am very happy where I am at now, I am doing landscape, and I am doing a show at the Joshua Tree Gallery of Contemporary Art. It’s a beautiful show; it is one of the greatest shows I have ever done as it’s so beautifully installed. Which open in January.
What has been the most outrageous thing that happened during a photography session? Michael: When we went to photograph my friend Carrie Fisher for Rolling Stone and we were told to arrive at 10:00a.m. and she was just getting up and having a Coca-Cola and a piece of cake for breakfast. She said, “You wouldn’t mind if I had a quick bath” and she started to go into a bubble bath. My young straight assistant was there, and she said, “You’re cute, would you like to have a bath with me?” That’s one way to start a photo session. What advice would you give to a young person who wants to make a career in photography? Michael: It’s not about the gimmick or the machine. It’s about the ways of seeing that are unique. It doesn’t matter if it is on a phone or on a big camera. I can tell right away if someone has an eye, instantly. Seek out what is great visually and is unusual and what amazes people.
Most people know you as a great photographer, but you are also known for your philanthropic work. What are some of the charities you support? Michael: It started in 18 years ago in Santa Fe, in what is “One Night Only.” I produced it 3 years there. I had such people as Carol Burnett, Lauren Bacall, Ally McGraw, I had Margaret Cho. I had amazing people in the show, and it just build over the years. I was so lucky; my first show in Palm Springs was with Lily Tomlin. She is my good luck charm, and she came back 16 years later and opened my show. It is a magnet for talent. All of the people in New York want to come to Palm Springs. It is not that hard to get great talent now as the show has such a great reputation.

OPENING OF JOSHUA TREE GALLERY OF CONTEMPORARY ART FEATURING THE WORKS OF MICHAEL CHILDERS AND GORDON CLARK BY JEFF HOCKER Joshua Tree Gallery of Contemporary Art (JT-GOCA) and the Cultural Center’s entire leading-edge Yucca Valley Visual & Performing Arts Center that it’s a part of, had its grand opening in June 2018 but was forced to close fewer than two years later in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic mandates—where it remained without any exhibitions or programming for nearly 19 months. While the pandemic has been financially devastating for nearly all arts organizations, including the Cultural Center, the downtime has given the Center time to further implement its intended vision for the flagship gallery—to be an avid participant in the international arts community, highlight the beauty of commonality within diversity, and represent the Greater Joshua Tree area. “We are thrilled to be collaborating with ARTCO to move forward in taking this anticipated next step to fulfill the original vision for this cutting-edge venue,” explains Jarrod Radnich, the Cultural Center’s president. ARTCO maintains galleries in Europe and South Africa and has chosen to partner with the Cultural Center in Joshua Tree for its United States presence. “Emergence” fills the gallery with the photographic artwork of Michael Childers and Gordon Clark. The exhibition presents new works from each artist as well as works that have adorned the walls of esteemed museums and galleries around the globe. The December 11 opening publicly previews and offers for sale the exhibited photographs ahead of the exhibition’s Grand Gala to be held on January 22, 2022. Michael Childers is a truly iconic living legend, with a scope of artistic work realized by very few others. From his photographic work at Sir Laurence Olivier’s National Theater in London, to 200+ magazine covers including, among

Childers has created some of the most renowned portraits of Hollywood and music icons and produced numerous awardwinning films.. “People were coming out and expressing themselves,” says Childers, who created a series of striking black-and-white photographs in which his subjects experimented with makeup, wedding dresses, tuxedos, and feather boas, exposing the artifice of traditional gender identity and the joy of self-expression. “It was sweet, innocent drag.” “Together, these bodies of work offer a compelling and provocative then-and-now portrait of gay liberation and expression.
They also represent a diversion from Childers’ star-studded oeuvre, which spans more than 100 films (he was a photographer on the sets of Grease, Marathon Man, The Year of Living Dangerously, and Coal Miner’s Daughter, and others) and includes more than 200 magazine covers. He also photographed scores of fine artists, garnering acclaim for his images of Andy Warhol and the British painter David Hockney,” commented Steven Biller, Editor-in-Chief, Palm Springs Life. Gordon Clark is an acclaimed photographer and awardwinning cinematographer renowned for his spellbinding images of landscapes and multifaceted photographs and cinematic stories of the human experience. He weaves complex narratives by inserting subjects into deliberately choreographed natural environments, which compel viewers to interpret the powerful dilemmas at play within each subject’s life. UNSUNG MIDLER COMES TO PALM SPRINGS BY TS STAFF
The Coachella Valley has always excelled in bringing a diverse and mix of culture and entertainment to the area. During COVID, performers have been just waiting for the moment to return to live events with new projects and new music. On January 27th, at 7 pm, Oscar’s Downtown will welcome a truly eclectic evening mixing country music, storytelling, jazz hands…and Bette Midler? Under the stars, country music recording artist Kasey Lansdale and previous Palm Springs Pride Media Grand Marshal and popular podcaster Alexander Rodriguez present a new duet show, Unsung Midler, celebrating the great, lesser-known hits of the Divine Miss M from The Rose, For the Boys, and Beaches to her numerous albums and covers. No song style is off-limits and the two will present the songs reinterpreted, mixing their own flair and storytelling to the occasion. What might seem like an unusual pairing of Kasey’s country and Alexander’s musical theatre style results in a unique sound and blend of harmonies, tone, and sass. This musical duo met when Kasey came to be interviewed on Alexander’s nationally syndicated, filmed podcast On the Rocks with Alexander: Where Celebrities & Cocktails Mix. “Kasey came to promote her album and she showed up with a guitar player and
18 THESTANDARDPS.COM
performed live, on-air…she knocked my socks off and I’ve been hooked ever since,” exclaimed Alexander. Kasey has become a regular on Alexander’s show and the two put their own spin on “Son of a Preacher Man” for Alexander’s cabaret show at Rockwell Table and Stage in Los Angeles. This December, they released two holiday songs in preparation for their January concert. “I continue to be amazed by Kasey’s talent – the way she can interpret a song and use her songwriting skills to add flair to a well-known song, making it her own, is just astounding. She keeps me on my toes and is a true musical inspiration. She also lets me get a little crazy with my comedy and jazz hands – our time together is always lively and full of positive energy.” Music has always been a part of Kasey’s life and growing up in Texas gave her a potpourri education in musical sounds and genres that include Reba and The Contours., Lansdale was introduced to a guitar player who happened to be her next-door neighbor. They began writing and singing together and were offered their first paid gig at Banita Creek Hall in Nacogdoches, Texas, their hometown. Thus, a musical career was born. In time, she began making frequent trips to Nashville to write and record and, through an invaluable network
she built, doors started to open. In Nashville, her industry recognition grew, and she began to play her music there and across the country. She’s recorded with Grammy Award-Winning Producer John Carter Cash who has produced such legends as Loretta Lynn, George Jones, and Willie Nelson, to name a few, and has traveled the nation and the globe to perform at large events and festivals such as SXSW, the Halogaland Music Festival in Norway, and The Piacenza Blues Festival in Italy. Her music has been featured in several films including Cold in July, starring award-winning actor Michael C. Hall (Dexter) and Christmas with the Dead, where she made her first big-screen debut portraying Ella, the protagonist’s wife. Her song, “Falling In and Out (of Love)” was heard in Hap and Leonard (Sundance). With this country-based career, why the music of Bette Midler? I ask you, why not Bette Midler? Midler’s career spans over fifty years, and her influence on pop culture is undeniable. I love that she has had successful albums, done Broadway, written children’s books,
and starred in films. She does what she wants to do, trusts her gut, and follows her passions as they come. The entertainment business is constantly trying to put you in a box, and Midler defies those labels. She does it all. And Kasey’s creative process in reinterpreting Bette’s music?
I’ve always said that I am a singer, and you can call it what you want to. I’ve played at blues festivals and Americana events, been on bills with everyone from Keb Mo to Wynonna Judd. To me, you find the songs that speak to you, and you sing them. That’s it. You don’t worry about the label. Midler not only has her own extremely impressive catalog, but she’s found the songs that she wants to cover as an artist and created her own interpretation. So doing the covers that Midler covered, it’s sort of this beautiful mish-mash of all the things that were great about the original songs, as well as the new
JANUARY 2022 19
FEATURE takes that Midler created. I like to find a little piece of all of it, blend it up in my brain, and see what comes out. Being under lockdown has been difficult for Kasey, who is used to a calendar full of travels and live performances. This will be her first gig out of COVID, and a step outside of the box as she embraces Midler’s library. Performing has always been a part of me. This last year a half has felt like I’m missing an appendage. It’s a salve for the soul, and it’s long overdue. I want audiences to remember the feeling of live shows. Zoom has been a lifesaver and I am grateful we had those online opportunities, but people need people. It’s a simple as that. I want our audience to leave feeling that magic that can only happen from a live performance. From Unsung Midler, they can expect an evening of story and song, but I hope they leave with more than that. That the stories and the music Alexander Rodriguez and I choose to sing, and share are those that they can connect to. Whether from a song that brings back a wonderful memory, or a story that allows them to think, “me too.” That’s what all of this is about anyway, connecting to the audience, to one another. For Alexander, this marks his return to music in almost three years. He did the musical theatre circuit right after college performing in staple shows like Into the Woods and Bye Bye Birdie, including a year-long stint in You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown at the Roxy in Hollywood. In addition to his many emcee gigs at Prides around the nation, he’s sung at Segerstrom Center for the Arts with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Upright Citizen’s Brigade’s Inner Sanctum, ESpot, Don’t Tell Mama in LA and NY, Rage Nightclub, and Rockwell Table & Stage. You can also catch his news bytes on Channel Q FM, nationally, courtesy of GED Magazine and Metrosource Magazine, where he serves as lead writer.
I am so thankful for my career in podcasting and journalism. Not only have I been given the opportunity to interview and hang out with some of my favorite celebs from the entertainment industry, past and present, but I’ve been able to be part of a platform for the LGBTQ world and beyond. Returning to the stage, as a singer, is a passion and a unique opportunity to share my storytelling in a different medium. Most people know me as the funny guy on the mic making jokes and introducing other acts; you’ll see a very different, more intimate Alexander in Unsung Midler…and I can’t wait. I’ll still have jazz hands though. Unsung Midler Thursday, January 27th, 7 pm www.OscarsPalmSprings.com

INDESIGN
STYLE TODAY: 2022 BY DANN FOLEY
At the New Year we are offered a plethora of advice on how to clean up after the holidays, how to organize every corner and drawer of your home and how to refresh your life to make everything old new again. I honestly find it all very helpful. But, what about what is new? What will design and personal style look like in the New Year and moving forward? Trends in home design are on a much longer arch than say, fashion. Home styles do change but, at a much slower pace. We want our homes to be comfortable and stylish and also lasting. Personal style usually takes what is popular today and infuses it with intimate pieces or items to make a house a home. Yet, we still track and talk about those trends and how they affect homeowner’s perceptions and buying habits. Yes, it truly does come down to getting you to buy more products! I am here to help you navigate those impulse buys and give you advice on making your space truly yours, and to be as proud today as you can be in years to come. I travel to most of the Home Markets in North America, Europe and even Asia. I see what is coming 6 months, a year, and 18 months now. Everything for the home is forecasted. From furniture, lighting, and accessories to paint colors and fabrics, there is an everchanging landscape of products to consider. I can offer some take-aways that may help you make your own choices for your home. We have had more than 2 decades of everything modern. We have also seen the color gray (or lack of color) covering every surface and material in the home. Both of those things will continue in their popularity but, the change we see coming is a return to a more traditional/transitional style for the home. Simply put, it is time to warm up all the stark modernity and give some life to all those neutrals. Before those lovers of modern design stop reading, let me assure you the idea of traditional design is not what we knew in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Traditional design today is cleaner and yes, more modern than it was decades ago in its heyday. There are two schools of thought with traditional style, and they involve the use of color & pattern or solids & neutrals. The majority of clients we work with are all looking for neutrals. We advise them to stay away from gray. The color is lifeless and too
22 THESTANDARDPS.COM
many shades on the market and too cool. In our office, we suggest warm neutrals. Even white can be warm or cool. If white is your thing, then I am going to share one of my tried-and-true color selections: Sherwin & Williams, Greek Villa SW7551 In my vast amount of design experience there is not a more perfect white to use in any home, of any style. It is warm enough, bright enough and never too cool, or too warm. Greek Villa will perfectly reflect natural light, man-made light and the colors and finishes of your home. At Foley & Stinnette Interior Design, we use it almost on a daily basis. Even when using other colors, we specify this color for ceilings, doors, and trim. If you are searching for a crisp white, this is your answer. When it comes to new colors, there are any number of people
who offer their opinion for the “Color Of the Year”. Color is personal and I encourage all of our clients to find the colors that make them happy. A neutral room is all too often a bland room. Paint is fast and affordable. What I can share with you is color forecasting has become a big business. It is too easy to get drawn into the idea that if you are not using the latest color, you and your home are somehow out of fashion. Nothing could be more untrue. Use color, explore color, live with color. It will change your perspective, change your mood, and lift your spirit. Make the effort to find your color. As for 2022, we are seeing all tones of gray paint being warmed up. In fact, Sherwin Williams choice for color of the year is a beautiful shade of gray/green that is just as handsome in a modern setting as it is a traditional or transitional setting. It works in a living room as well as a bedroom or bathroom. It might even give you that fresh look for the new year you were hoping for, without the expense of redecorating: Sherwin Williams, Evergreen Fog SW9130
on yourself. This is not brain surgery, it is decorating. Have fun, feel your way around and consider all the options. Happy New Year and Live Well! Designer Dann
When it comes to decorating your own spaces, I always ask you to consider what you love. Those things and those colors you are drawn to are what tells your story. Don’t be fooled by anyone telling you what you should have to be “in style”. What you love is your style. Whether you are a modernist or a traditionalist, you home should reflect who you are. As always, I will remind you to be easy

DAPUPDATE
DAP HEALTH REMOVES BARRIERS TO SEXUAL HEALTH ACCESS BY STEVEN HENKE DAP Health made two significant moves to expand free testing and treatment to the East Valley by signing a lease to a new facility in Indio and partnering with MISTR to provide virtual PrEP services statewide. On Nov. 29, DAP Health signed a lease for a building in Indio to open a sexual wellness clinic. The organization hopes to open the new space by June 2022. Free services will include STI (Sexually Transmitted Infections) testing and treatment (gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis), HIV prevention (pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP; post-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP), and HIV and hepatitis C testing. If anyone tests positive for HIV, the sexual wellness clinic DAP Health will provide that person with rapid start medication and linkage to care, an essential step in reducing new HIV infections and improving the health outcomes of the person living with HIV. While the cost of ongoing HIV treatment is not part of the free services, DAP Health offers financial assistance. In 2019, 25% of all HIV-positive test results at DAP Health were Hispanic men. “Many folks were driving from the East Valley to Palm Springs to utilize DAP Health’s sexual wellness services. We noticed not only a high volume of patients but most of those patients were already having symptoms of an STI or testing positive for HIV,” says C.J. Tobe, the Director of Community Health and Sexual Wellness at DAP Health. Tobe believes free testing and treatment, with the convenience of not having to drive a great distance, will encourage more people to get tested. DAP Health is changing the system to meet the person. Since eliminating the cost barriers in its Orange Clinic that houses its sexual wellness services in July 2021, DAP Health has seen ongoing STI increases while HIV has remained the same, according to Tobe. DAP Health knew access to these services would be vital while social activities increased.
26 THESTANDARDPS.COM
In the first four months: The Orange Clinic saw over 2,000 patients. On average, DAP Health is seeing 170 more patients per month than when patients were being charged for services. The clinic started the same number of people on PrEP during the four months than they did in the prior 12 months. There were over 50 appointments for rapid start to ensure people newly diagnosed with HIV, or returning to care, have access to HIV medications within 7 days. “We are proactively protecting the community’s health,” Tobe said. “Eliminating the cost barrier has proven to increase access to folks in our community for PrEP and STI services.” “One of those barriers is cost. DAP Health learned many people testing positive for STIs and HIV had limited incomes. For them, the prior $25 fee for STI testing and PrEP was an impediment to care. DAP Health decided to remove that cost barrier to improve health equity.” In addition to the new Indio site, DAP Health now offers PrEP services virtually through MISTR, a discrete online service that provides access to PrEP, the once-daily pill regimen that prevents HIV. With its secure online platform, MISTR can determine if an individual is a candidate for PrEP and makes PrEP completely free. Moreover, MISTR manages all paperwork and back and forth with insurance companies and the various patient assistance programs, creating a seamless experience for the end-user. With the new clinic and the partnership with MISTR, DAP Health looks to make its services available to more people. DAP Health continues to make sexual wellness a priority by
providing more people with more access to health services. It also continues to expand its ability to treat more people. “We welcome all people, period. And now we are eliminating more barriers to access sexual wellness services,” Tobe said. “We are changing the system to meet the person. We continue to do this; First by eliminating the cost barrier and now opening a free sexual wellness clinic to people most impacted by HIV/STIs. That is health equity.” For more information, visit https://mistr.com/dap/ or https:// mistr.com/dap-sistr/ ABOUT DAP HEALTH DAP Health is an advocacy-based health center in Palm Springs, Calif., serving more than 10,000 patients, offering medical and mental health care, STI testing and treatment, dentistry, pharmacy, and lab services. A variety of wraparound services enable patients to experience optimal health, including social services, support groups, alternative therapies, and other wellness services. Excellent HIV care is provided by the largest team of specialized clinicians in the area. DAP Health opened one of California’s first COVID clinics and hotlines to offer screening, testing, and treatment. DAP Health also is working to address the social determinants of health that are causing negative health outcomes during this pandemic, like food and housing insecurity, joblessness, isolation, and access to ongoing healthcare. DAP Health’s sexual health clinic offers STI testing and treatment, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and HIV and hepatitis C (HCV) testing. DAP Health has earned Charity Navigator’s highest rating for the 12th consecutive year — landing DAP in the top 6% of nonprofits rated. The distinction recognizes that DAP Health exceeds industry standards in terms of financial health, accountability, and transparency. BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
There’s still a lot of winter left. That’s the fact staring you in the face. Once the holiday decorations are down, the egg nog is finished, and you’ve rediscovered your gift certificates... what do you do with them? You buy books, of course. And to get you started, here are a few sure-fire picks for the Best of 2021: FICTION What would you do if life throws you a curve-ball? In “The Guncle” by Steven Rowley (Putnam, $27.00), gay man, former TV star, Palm Springs fixture, no-responsibilities Patrick is asked to take care of his niece and nephew for the long-term. He never wanted kids at all. He never wanted to fall in love with them, either. Cute, sweet, funny, heartfelt – what more could you want? You don’t have to have read any of the other Cork O’Conner novels to want “Lightning Strike” by William Kent Krueger (Atria, $27.00), which takes readers back to 1963, and a murder in smalltown Minnesota. Cork O’Conner is a young teen then, the son of the local sheriff, and he knows that Big John Manydeeds couldn’t have possibly hung himself. But how does a boy go about proving something like that? For fans, that’s a can’t-miss question. For new fans, it’ll send you racing toward the rest of the Cork O’Conner series. Watchers of “The Handmaiden’s Tale” will absolutely devour

“Outlawed” by Anna North (Bloomsbury, $26.00). In a small corner of Texas, at an unstated time, seventeen-year-old Ada is struggling to give her husband children, which embarrasses him, and that’s something only witches do. And so, Ada is cast out of the community and heads north, to safety, where barren women are outlaws. This dystopian, feminist Western is dangerous and delicious. “Raft of Stars” by Andrew J. Graff (Ecco, $26.99) is a comingof-age story of two boys who are best friends, and one of them is abused by his father. Tired of seeing his friend hurt, the other boy shoots the man and both boys run away to escape what surely will be legal trouble and maybe even jail time. They’re running toward a lie, though, and they’re heading for a waterfall they don’t know is there. This is one of those books with heartbreakingly beautiful prose in a story that’ll leave you with sweaty palms. And finally, have you ever wondered what your life would be like if you’d taken a different path? In “The Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano” by Donna Freitas (Pamela Dorman Books, $26.00), one woman has many options in her life, each one ending in a way she never thought possible. It’s like “Groundhog Day” with a twist that’ll roll around in your mind for days... NON-FICTION For every kid who grew up with a pile of comic books next to
the bed, in a drawer, or in the closet, “American Comics: A History” by Jeremy Dauber (W.W. Norton, $35.00) is a must-have. Here, Dauber follows comics from their political roots to today’s activist cartoons, and how we went from Katzenjammer Kids to MAD Magazine to comix as we know them. The bonus is that Dauber puts comics into fascinating historical perspective. Did you buy your lottery ticket this week? If you did, it’ll make a fine bookmark for “Jackpot: How the Super-Rich Really Live – and How Their Wealth Harms Us All” by Michael Mechanic (Simon & Schuster, $28.00). You might think twice about the burdens of wealth after reading this book – and you might re-examine your thoughts on what one person’s wealth does to everyone else... Readers who love memoirs will enjoy “Punch Me Up to the Gods” by Brian Broome (HMH< $26.00), who writes about growing up, being in love with the boy who abused him, and the father who did, too. It’s a coming-out tale that’s sometimes funny and always graceful, one
that will sometimes make you gasp, and that you’ll be glad you read. You know that feeling you get when you come across a stack of old magazines in the attic? That gentle, hometown, old-time feeling is extra-rich inside “The Ride of Her Life” by Elizabeth Letts (Ballantine, $28.00). This is the story of Annie Wilkins, aging, ailing, and alone, and the audacious cross-country ride she decides to take on a horse she’d just purchased. This feel-good story is set in the 1950s, and its neighborliness might make it be the perfect antidote for today’s world. Lastly, “The Redemption of Bobby Love” by Bobby and Cheryl Love with Lori L. Tharps (Mariner Books / HMH Books, $28.00) might be the most unusual memoir you read this winter. As a young man, Walter Miller ran away from a prison bus and to New York, where he renamed himself Bobby Love and went into hiding in plain sight. Love kept to the straightand-narrow, fell in love, got married, and raised a family but forty-some years later, the law caught up with him. This astounding, impossible story, told alternately between both Loves, is one you’ll..... um, love.

The mission of the Foundation is to help improve the lives of children and young adults afflicted with HIV/AIDS or cancer. Eligible clients with dependent children may qualify for $300 a month in grocery assistance. Founded in 1991 (as AIDS Assistance Program) with the goal of helping the most at-risk members of the Greater Palm Springs community: low-income people compromised by HIV/AIDS, the organization has expanded its services to include people suffering from cancer, MS, heart or liver disease, and other chronic illnesses. In support of a long-standing desire to increase outreach and provide services to more people including children, this new grant will provide additional financial support for the program. A portion of the grant funds received will be allocated for outreach. AAP will engage health-related charities, senior centers, social service organizations, and local cities to help spread the word. AAP – Food Samaritans’ program guidelines state that in addition to eligible adults, food vouchers will be given in the same amount to provide nutritional support for children of clients. The amount of the monthly food vouchers is currently $150. Children must live with a parent enrolled in the program and their eligibility is tied to that of the parent. All benefits allocated to children will end when the child reaches age 18. AAP Executive Director/C.E.O. Mark Anton said of the outreach: “We are accepting new clients and turning to the community to ask
for help in spreading the word to people who earn less than $19,320 per year and live with a chronic debilitating illness such as cancer, MS, HIV/AIDS, or kidney disease. Eligible people receive grocery vouchers of $150 each month, and those with dependent children under 18 may receive additional vouchers in an equal amount. MR. MAN ANNOUNCES TOP 10 NUDE SCENES OF 2021 BY NOEL HOFFMAN
38 THESTANDARDPS.COM
Hollywood wasn’t afraid to take viewers to some surprisingly new-d places in 2021. Cinema ventured deep into the explicit in several of the year’s top pictures, perhaps none more so than on HBO’s The White Lotus. It featured multiple erotic scenes but the one everyone was talking about at the water cooler was the scene between Lukas Gage and Murray Bartlett. For his part, Gage welcomed the attention. “I can’t wait for my ass to get retweeted all over the Internet,” he said. And it did. Halston, the Netflix miniseries about the rise and fall of the iconic couture designer, was as sexually-forward as it was fashionforward. It had everything fans could expect from a Ryan Murphy production: rock music, drugs and loads of runway looks, but it was the eye-popping nakedness that truly captivated fans in 2021; especially the scene where Ewan McGregor and 6’4 tall Sullivan Jones engage in very realistic intimacy. “Hollywood continues to push the boundaries when it comes to nudity and sex,” says Phil Henricks of Mr. Man, the world’s leading online library of every male nude scene in the history of film and television. “Many of the scenes we saw play out on screen in 2021 simply would not have happened in previous years.”

DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COVID-19 TESTING OPTIONS? BY JC GORHAM
When you think about efforts to fight the spread of COVID-19, vaccinations, hand washing, and masking likely come to mind. However, one important effort that must remain the first line of defense is effective testing. With the Omicron variant in full swing, we cannot let our guards down. Testing, combined with other defensive measures, is essential to keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe. Since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a global pandemic in March 2020, medical experts and government leaders have worked together to make different types of testing options easily accessible to the public. You may not realize there are different types of tests, so what is available to you? The two main types of tests authorized for detecting COVID-19 are polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and antigen tests. Here is what you need to know about both: ANTIGEN TESTS If you have ever taken a rapid strep test or pregnancy test, antigen tests work similarly. Also referred to as rapid tests or rapid antigen tests, these tests work by quickly identifying protein fragments from a virus - these are the antigens - and providing test results in about 15 minutes. Despite being fast, antigen tests can be less accurate than other testing options because they are less sensitive, meaning that some people might incorrectly be told they don’t have the virus. Because no special equipment is needed, antigen tests may be performed in various community settings or at home. This convenience has made antigen tests, particularly at-home options, popular when quick results are needed, as when returning to an office or preparing for an event like a vacation. However, there is more room for error when self-testing, as
42 THESTANDARDPS.COM
opposed to having a test administered by a trained professional2. Further, at-home antigen tests are most accurate if COVID-19 symptoms are present and may require the use of several tests to confirm a diagnosis. It is also important to always follow the manufacturer’s directions. ANTIGEN TEST OVERVIEW When to take it: When in need of results quickly Speed: Results usually available in 15 minutes Chance of user error: High Ease of use: Doesn’t require equipment or chemicals; easy to use at home or point of care Effectiveness on variants: Low PCR TESTS PCR tests are also referred to as molecular tests, viral RNA
tests or nucleic acid tests1. These require special equipment and are typically sent to a lab, with results often available within 24 hours, depending on location. Some PCR tests provide results in just 20 minutes, however, these tests are mostly available in healthcare environments, such as hospitals. Why would someone use a test that takes longer to get results? The answer: accuracy. PCR tests have remained a touchstone in diagnostics due to their heightened accuracy over antigen tests. They are highly sensitive and can detect very small amounts of virus genetic material in a sample, such as viral DNA1. These tests have a sensitivity of about 98%, much higher than comparative data for antigen tests. This is why PCR tests can detect active infections nearly every time, and it is rare for someone uninfected to receive a positive test. PCR TEST OVERVIEW When to take it: When in need of extremely accurate results Speed: Results usually take 24 hours; may require an appointment Chance of error: Low Ease of use: Requires equipment, chemicals, and trained specialists; point-of-care options available but limited Effectiveness on variants: High
THE FUTURE OF COVID-19 TESTING With vaccination rates increasing and booster shots recently becoming available, we are seeing some normalcy return to our lives. However, as restrictions ease, people are traveling more and starting to return to routine life activities, making people more vulnerable to infection. As the pandemic evolves, complementary testing options can make effectively screening for COVID-19 even easier. This may include combining antigen and PCR testing for identifying present COVID-19 infections, antibody tests for evaluating past exposure, and multiplex tests, which tests for more than one disease, such as flu and COVID-19. TOP SPA TRENDS OF 2022 FOCUS ON HEALING AND REJUVENATION BY DON MEYER With health and wellness top of mind for so many people, interest in spas is increasing. A trip to the spa is truly an exercise in self-care. Many spas are evolving their offerings to incorporate treatments focused on healing and rejuvenation to help people look and feel their best. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re an avid spa-goer, explore the top 2022 trends in spa treatments and indulge in luxurious self-care: THALASSOTHERAPY Have you ever noticed how you look and feel better when you spend time by the ocean? The healing powers of the sea are the focus of thalassotherapy, the use of mineral-rich water and moisturizing marine extracts to therapeutically relax the body. Thalassotherapy is commonly incorporated into spa bathing experiences, providing deep relaxation. These baths are wonderfully soothing by themselves, but benefits can be maximized when combined with massage, body scrubs or seaweed wraps. HYDROTHERAPY The healing power of water is the focus of hydrotherapy. Expert therapists strategically use warm and cool water to soothe the body and also invigorate the senses, providing myriad health benefits. A menu of signature hydrotherapy treatments is available at Kohler Waters Spa in Burr Ridge, Illinois, located 20 miles west of downtown Chicago. This newly redesigned spa features the custom Vichy Shower, which for the first time will be suspended from the ceiling, allowing the therapist more flexibility to move around the massage table during treatments. CHROMOTHERAPY Often referred to as color therapy, chromotherapy is being added to spa treatments to enhance the overall wellness experience.
For example, the Kohler Vichy Shower now includes chromotherapy with the introduction of red LED light therapy which improves the skin’s health and aids with cell repair. Chromotherapy is a complementing element of the hydrotherapy shower that can provide a constant shower of warm water in varying sequences that include drenching rain, intense massage, and soft silk spray. THAI MASSAGE If you’re a fan of yoga, you’ll likely be a fan of Thai massage treatments. Originating from Thailand, Thai massage has ancient origins that focus on flowing and rhythmic massage sequences. Acupressure and yoga-like stretching are important parts of these treatments and set them apart from other styles of massage. In addition to deep relaxation and stress relief, Thai massage can also be beneficial for joint and muscle health, helping to increase range of motion and improve agility. TREATMENTS FOR MEN As more men are realizing the benefits of wellness treatments, spas are now frequented by males of many different ages. To meet this growing demand, spas are developing services to meet their unique needs. From gentlemen’s facials and massages to male-focused treatments for hands and feet, there’s something for everyone. These treatments can be customized based on need and preference, so men can get exactly what they want to feel their best.
