Q&A
CHRIS DIAMOND, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER WHITE PARTY GLOBAL BY GREG STANTON
The return of the long-awaited legendary weekend is upon us; bringing all the revelry, excitement & parties we look forward to. The return also introduces us to a new executive producer, Chris Diamond who plans on continuing the formula of success started by Jeffrey Sanker. We talked to Chris to find out what’s in store for this year’s event. Thanks Chris for taking the time to talk, let’s dive right in. White Party Global continues the legacy started by Jeffrey Sanker, can you tell our readers what the plans are to continue that legacy? The plans are to continue White Party Palm Springs for many years to come. We have rebranded ourselves as White Party Global as we have expanded to Puerto Vallarta, and we leave it open to expand to other places. We plan to make Palm Springs and Puerto Vallarta bigger and better. What makes White Party different from all the other circuit events around the world? White Party is so much more than the other circuit events. It’s more like a “family get together,” bringing a global LGBTQ community together to make new friends and memories that last a lifetime. This was always one of the main focuses that founder Jeffrey Sanker set out to create. It’s certainly a key aspect that we are determined to continue. Also, it has been a party where some of the greatest talent went on to become major stars. Lady Gaga, Ariane Grande are a couple and this year is sure to set the same tone. Where do you draw your inspiration for White Party? I watch parties all over the world. I talk with so many people. I talk with all the DJ’s, and I am always looking to see how we can create an amazing party! What’s in store for White Party veterans? We will follow the same format with some new talent but for
16 THESTANDARDPS.COM
those White Party Veterans it only seemed right to have the legendary Paula Abdul grace the White Party stage. Are there other activities for those who don’t want to partake in all the parties or events? There are always outside areas, or areas around the host hotel that people can go and talk and enjoy conversation. On Saturday, yogi master Francisco Ramos will lead an energizing and rejuvenating session of Warrior Yoga on the Convention Center East Lawn for those that want to take a moment for themselves, as well.
Based on ticket sales thus far, what are your expectations for attendees this year? Well, it seems that people are really excited to get back out and have some fun after a two-year hiatus. It is looking to be a record party. What is the process in selecting the entertainment and DJ’s for White Party? One of the great things is that White Party also owns Industry Nightclub in Puerto Vallarta, where DJs from all over perform and put on great parties. The state-of-the-art club has quickly become one of the best gay nightclubs in the world, attracting some of the best talent. We try out new talented DJs at Industry and we also go to other world events to check out other DJs.
I know that this year’s T-Dance fireworks finale will be dedicated to Jeffrey Sanker, what can we expect? A collage of amazing memories of parties and moments from Jeffrey’s life played on the screens while some of his favorite songs play in the background of an amazing firework show.
What are three things everyone should bring to White Party? 1. Your Best Pool Outfit 2. Your Best White Party Superhero Attire 3. A Cell Phone Camera for sure What would you say to someone who has never been to a White Party? White Party is one of the most welcoming and safe events you can go to if you’re LGBTQ. It is an amazing weekend of music and entertainment where you will make life-long friendships. You will feel an amazing sense of inclusion. What has been the most rewarding part for you in producing White Party this year? I am so excited to put COVID behind us and have so much fun creating one of the greatest LGBTQ music festivals in the world. I can’t wait to see the desert filled with some of the most gorgeous people from around the globe. Where can we go to get all the latest details and information? Whitepartyglobal.com

DJ BEN BAKSON’S BRINGS THE BIG TOP TO PALM SPRINGS BY JASON SALERNO
DJ Ben Bakson is on a worldwide tour, promoting “Ain`t Moving On,” his high-energy club track about being swept up in an inescapable crush. “Relationships can be all-consuming,” says the DJ from Carnival in Brazil where he premiered the song during his live set. He did the same the next week in Australia where he headlined Sydney Mardi Gras and on Sunday, May 1, he returns to Palm Springs to spin White Party’s “Big Top Circus T-Dance” with his close friend, DJ Dan Slater, taking place outside at the Convention Center. Sunday’s T-Dance starts in the afternoon and continues into the night as the sun sets behind the spectacular mountains of Palm Springs. The event will feature state of the art sound, lighting, and video… and some exciting surprises including the US dancefloor premiere of his hit new single.
20 THESTANDARDPS.COM
“Ain`t Moving On” follows “Sound of Love,” Bakson’s smash dancefloor anthem that features the vocals of Caddy (of the German pop group, Banaroo). Caddy is on the new single, too, this time with Duncan James, the former lead singer of the British boyband, Blue. “Ain`t Moving On is the story of my life,” Bakson explains. “When I fall for someone, I find it very hard to let go, even after the relationship ends. I’ve always been very selective of the people I spend my time with and when I connect with someone special, I can’t imagine life without them.” “Even when we know someone is unavailable or not the best fit for us,” he continues, “it can be hard to quell the intense feelings.”
Ben Bakson grew up as an only child with two parents in a small village in south Germany where he enjoyed watching movies, listening to music and long days at the lake or sea with family and friends. At 18 years old, he moved to Berlin to study Economics and after graduating, he landed a marketing job at a large firm. It was only then that he began dabbling in music production.
“It started as a hobby. I had a strong following on social media, so my music found an audience pretty quickly. I began getting gig requests. One successful show led to another, and I soon realized it was time to pursue my music dream.” “We only live once,” Bakson states. “It’s important to make every day count as if it’s our last.”

FEATURE Ben’s music style is commercial with hard, emotional, and energetic beats. Vocals are important to him as he believes that they are the soul of every song. In addition to his original compositions, he is noted for reworking famous songs from the 80s and 90s, as he did recently with Cutting Crew’s “(I Just) Died in your Arms”. “It’s fun to recreate past hits with fresh vocalists and modern, driving melodies,” he explains. “Ultimately, I want to see smiles on all the faces in my crowd. I want people to feel hope, love, and confidence when on my dance floor. Music is the most powerful instrument in the world. It changes everything.” Following White Party Palms Springs, Ben Bakson’s worldwide “Ain’t Moving On” tour continues to Paris, Miami, Chicago, DC, and Prides in Toronto, San Francisco, NY, and Germany. Ben Bakson’s “Ain’t Moving On” featuring Caddy with Duncan James is available on Apple Music, Spotify, and all digital platforms, along with its remixes by Dan Slater, Nina Flowers, Phil Romano, Lucas Franco, Eversend and Aurel Dev. BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
Loud thunder-booms. Spiders and snakes. The number thirteen, clowns, cemeteries, and heights. There are a lot of things that you can fear, just as there are a lot of ways you can overcome phobias, if you want. Vanquish those shivers by taking classes, being brave or, as in the new novel, “Ready When You Are” by Gary Lonesborough, you can let someone gently help you. If he had to admit it, seventeen-year-old Jackson Barley had a love-hate relationship with Christmas. He loved its traditions, and because it was something out-ofthe-ordinary. When hanging out with your mates on the Mish is all you normally do, it’s nice to have the holidays to break up the sameold. But over Christmas break, his Aunty Pam always brought his cousins around and the house was full of little kids. Jackson loved his younger brother and his cousins, but man, could they make a racket! This year, another thing was unusual: Aunty Pam arrived Christmas Eve with a teenager she was caring for, a boy named Tomas who’d just gotten out of juvie. Of course, Jackson’s mother said that Tomas could bunk in Jackson’s room and that wasn’t cool, not at first. Jackson’s mind was elsewhere: his girlfriend broke up with him for reasons he couldn’t discuss. For most of his life, he had known that he was “different.” He tried to be like other boys, but it just didn’t work that way and he was afraid to even think about his feelings. And now there was this outlaw kid, another Aboriginal boy like him lying on a mattress in Jackson’s bedroom and oh, Tomas was beautiful. But Jackson wasn’t gay, or at least he wasn’t ready to be. He wanted a summer with his mates, and girls, but he wanted Tomas to kiss him, too. How could he be true to himself? And what would people think? There are three main characters inside “Ready When You Are”: Jackson, Tomas, and alcohol. Lots of alcohol, and teenagers who are often excessively drunk, which almost totally mars the sweetness of this novel. Put aside endless Outback parties and repetitous beach forays, though, and you might be charmed by this familiar-notfamiliar boy-meets-boy tale. In placing his novel in an Aboriginal community, author Gary Lonesborough gives U.S. readers a unique setting and immersion in a culture where life feels more relaxed than perhaps they’re accustomed – but yet, coming-out struggles for gay teens still exist. This leads to a story that, scene-for-scene, is predictable and common in YA romance novels –an aspect the genre’s most fervent
readers passionately rely on. They’ll also love Jackson, a boy in a man’s skin who acts responsibly and genuinely, but who’s not yet too self-assured about it. Life through his eyes is the best part of this book. Though you’ll likely find this novel in the Young Adult section, it’s absolutely appropriate for grown-ups with fond memories of first love. “Ready When You Are” has its lows, but it might also make your heart go boom. “Ready When You Are” by Gary Lonesborough c.2022, Scholastic PUSH $18.99 245 pages

>> PALM SPRINGS MAKES LGBTQ+ HISTORY IN POPULAR FAMILY BOARD GAME BY TIM RAINS
The official Palm Springs Monopoly Game was released last month and features a historic first for the global LGBTQ+ community. Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs LGBTQ+ Film Festival is honored to be the first LGBTQ+ property in Monopoly history. Jennifer Tripsea, a Top Trumps (no relation) representative said “Diversity and inclusion are very important to Top Trumps but most especially to the community and City of Palm Springs which had the first all-LGBTQ city council in the nation. The history of Palm Springs as the desert’s playground to the stars and the mission of Cinema Diverse to advance and strengthen the LGBTQ community through cinema felt like a perfect fit for the Palm Springs edition of Monopoly. We are proud to have Cinema Diverse be the first LGBTQ property on a Monopoly game.”
Michael C. Green, Executive Director of the Palm Springs Cultural Center and Film Festival Director for Cinema Diverse said “We are thrilled that our local LGBTQ+ film festival Cinema Diverse, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this September, is the first LGBTQ property to be featured on a Monopoly game. Likewise, we are honored to have our parent organization, the Palm Springs Cultural Center, and another of our programs, the Certified Farmers’ Market featured in the game. It really reinforces the fact that the Cultural Center and its programs are part of the fabric of our community.” The official Palm Springs Monopoly Game is available for purchase at local retailers as well as the Palm Springs Art Museum and features well known locales, restaurants, and events.

highlighting midcentury modern architecture, art, design, and vintage culture in the Palm Springs area of Southern California. Modernism Week concluded its 11-day festival at the end of February 2022. This is the first time the event organizers have offered additional programming in May. “We are excited for the opportunity to offer high-quality tour and event experiences to the public periodically throughout the year. We had planned to offer the tours of Casa Tierra in February, but supply chain issues and other factors prevented us from doing that,” said Lisa Vossler Smith, Modernism Week Executive Director. “Now that the property will be competed, we are happy to open the home exclusively for Modernism Week tours and we have developed other fun programming with our partners that complements and coincides with these tours.” For further information visit www.modernismweek.com

PERSPECTIVE
WHITE PARTY MEMORIES BY JILL LANGHAM
Hello and Happy Spring! March is behind us now and we are off and running to a month’s long time of dancing and partying. As of now all the Dance Parties and Music Festivals are good to go. Let’s pray that any new strain that’s discovered will keep us following some of the simple rules now known to cut down on the spread of this here-to-stay “New Flu!” At months end, White Party is returning to Palm Springs after a two-year hiatus and the death of its founder, Jeffrey Sanker. It will be very odd not to see Jeffrey racing through the crowd on his way to handle some unforeseen mishap. I have only been in attendance of this legendary 4-day party since 2004 where I heard the words through the music that changed my life. This is not the first time I have made mention of this, but for those of you who have not heard my story it goes like this. I had been to my first circuit party in February at the Avalon and was blown away by the camaraderie, music and out of body experiences that occurred. While there, a friend who has subsequently died, told me if I liked this, I had to go to White Party in Palm Springs over Easter Weekend. Like a good girl, I listened. I went online and bought a weekend pass and every piece of white clothing I could find. My maiden name had been Bianchi, which means White in Italian, making me believe that this “coincidence” was meant to be! I had been married at the time and we were both competitive body-builders and looked the part. Many men hoped that I was a “beard” for my muscular husband, but sorry to say, I was not. Without realizing it, this made us a very noticeable duo as we were super fit, tan and elated to be amongst what felt like a gathering of the Gods! It only helped that I loved to dance and had clothes that showed off many decades of hard work. I should mention that I was 49 at the time, and my ex, 62! We went to the now Famous Friday Night, Underwear Party, and I, like all the others, wore my underwear. I was given such an amazing reception that I could hardly wait for the Pool Party the next day at the Renaissance! And again, the response was unbelievable. Remember this was in 2004 and there were maybe 8-10 women who attended an event like this and without sounding too narcissistic, I was in a league of my own. I was definitely seen, and I loved it.
For me, it was a first. Prior to competing in bodybuilding shows, I had struggled with not only my physique, but also low self-esteem. Years and decades of depression were what I knew best, and the many years of anorexia and bulimia made me less than confident in my body. But the ex was a genius when it came to transforming physiques and once we regulated the type and amount of food that I had been poisoning myself with and the statue in the marble came to life! I was the most shocked and grateful person of all. I remember the butterflies I had in my stomach as I was awaiting making my entrance to the White Party itself and how standing in line at the Caballeros entrance about killed me. But again, I must have looked pretty darn good, because the response from those in line combined with those who recognized me from Friday’s event and the pool party, was over the top!

PERSPECTIVE I have died and gone to Heaven, is exactly how I felt! Could it get any better? Believe it or not, YES, it could! When we entered the Convention Center and I realized that we were entering the world of Alice in Wonderland, I knew my life would never be the same. And a few hours later, that feeling was confirmed. Truth be told I was on Ecstasy, which really makes me a super happy and friendly person, allowing me to drop all of my fears and low self-esteem. I was so elated to be amongst all these drop-dead, gorgeous men that I wanted to know them all. I pretty much said hello to everyone who glanced my way. Of course, most of them were probably ogling my ex, but that didn’t stop me from looking them right in the eye, smiling my Jill smile and saying, “Hello!” The music was off the hook and my dancing feet could not and would not stay still. I was not quite a whirling dervish but was a
36 THESTANDARDPS.COM
woman in motion! Again, I was one of maybe 6 women at this I believable party. So, without realizing or understanding who Jeffrey Sanker was, I thought it very kind when “this man” came over to say hello and to welcome us to what turned out to be, his creation and party! I remember thinking how incredible it was to be seen, something I had waited for my entire life. Let me be clear. I had experienced recognition for some of the accomplishments I had achieved in life but many of them had caveats attached to them. No one had really appreciated my sense of style, or perhaps they did and were jealous but if you suffer from low self esteem you negate any compliment with your own built in self-deprecating thoughts. I was in every kind of therapy they offered, desperately trying to find myself. Most of the time, I never felt like “the other girls.” I didn’t look like the girl next door, didn’t have a female physique, but instead looked more like a male ballet dancer from the waist down with overly defined quads and glutes and a lithe ballerina on top with a flat chest and wash-board abs. I ate foods that I was unknowingly
allergic to, which created systemic inflammation that filled out the body I described above and made me look and feel like an overstuffed sausage the rest of the time. What a crazy way to live you might be thinking and believe me it was! So, once I eliminated the allergens, I was free to be me and was now surrounded by gay men who evidently really like what they saw. Thank the Lord that I had never become a bitter person and when the allergens were gone and I was emerging into who I was always meant to be, I had nothing but love to share. I had stored up millions of smiles and the joy that I now felt flowed through me and out to all of you around me. I had heard of the term, “energy” in relation to people but hadn’t had it said about me, that is until that night. I kept hearing men say, “You have great energy.” I knew it was a huge compliment and maybe as a result of all of those positive vibes, I finally felt like I was HOME. Perhaps my root chakra (the chakra of belonging) had always been closed that is until that night and then with the advent of taking ecstasy it opened my crown chakra too. This left me “open” to what happened around 2am that wonderful night of my first White Party. I’m not sure if the ex had gone off to the bathroom or to get us our last drink but I was alone in my own private Idaho when I heard these words through the music, “Move to Palm Springs and Train Gay Men!” What? I looked at the others party-goers around me whose heads were perhaps bobbing up and down or whose knees rather than feet were on the dance floor (just saying), but none of them seemed to be aware of the words I had heard. Then a moment or two later, I heard the same words again but this time they were followed by “goose-bumps” (which I now call Truth-bumps) from head down to my toes and back again. I could not move but my God, did I feel! I knew these words were meant for me and me alone. This was my mission statement, and it was my responsibility to do what I was told, no questions asked. The rest they say is HER-STORY, well, mine and I will forever be beholden to Mr. Jeffrey Sanker and God for entrusting me to Palm Springs and all of you. So, as much as White Party, like the rest of the world has changed, I will always have a very warm spot in my heart for the man who brought millions upon millions of us together. The friends that I have met along the way are still exactly that, some are still my very best friends while others I will never forget or have chosen to remember as they were back then.
I trust that I am amongst millions of others who feel the same way regardless of the direction that so many parties seem to be taking. Our world is not the same and the focus is not what it used to be. In other months, I will be sharing some observations that I have made since moving here full time in 2006. I have had the honor of living amongst you as a straight woman and have a front row seat to Palm Springs and the Gay Community at large. Before I go, I just want to tell you how grateful I am for your acceptance of me and how much I honor the place I have been given. I want the best for everyone of you and hope that some of my observations can be used in a constructive way to better a beautiful thing. I will be at some of this year’s events during White Party and hope to see you there. I will always have a smile in my heart and eyes for you. See you on the Dance Floor! All my love, Jill Your Dancing Queen

IMPROVE HEART HEALTH ACCORDING TO AN INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST BY DR. HEATHER SHENKMAN
Most of us know that maintaining optimal heart health is essential to living a long, healthy life. Yet still, in the United States, heart disease is the leading cause of death, and we are not putting adequate attention toward prevention. Fortunately, cardiologists, heart health experts, and new research have made it easier to take care of our health by providing simple guidelines on how to maintain optimal heart health even as we age. Renowned Interventional Cardiologist and author Dr. Heather Shenkman emphasizes the importance of “making small, easy adjustments to your daily lifestyle that add up to transformative health benefits.”
your body good. Considering how busy our lives can be, it can be challenging to engage in intense workouts every day. But thankfully, according to cardiologists and health experts, a moderate, quick 15-minute walk around the neighborhood is enough to contribute to a healthy heart and body as a whole. “Benefits of a quick walk around the neighborhood are enormous,” said Metabolic Health & Vitality Specialist Tafiq Akhir. “The advantages go far beyond heart health; they include improved mood, reduced back pain, lower risk of blood clots, ease joint discomfort and so on.” 2) GET ENOUGH SLEEP
1) GO FOR DAILY WALKS Yes, just going on one walk a day is enough exercise to do
38 THESTANDARDPS.COM
You likely already know how important sleep is for our overall health, but it’s also crucial to leading a heart-healthy lifestyle in
particular. Poor sleep can negatively affect our cardiovascular health by interrupting our body’s natural recovery processes, causing changes in the blood vessels, slowing metabolism, and putting stress on our immune system. 3) STAY HYDRATED Drinking enough water isn’t just necessary when we’re thirsty, or when it’s hot outside. Dehydration can negatively impact our cardiovascular system by reducing the amount of blood circulating throughout our body. Keeping our bodies hydrated helps the heart more easily pump blood through the blood vessels to the muscles allowing them to work more efficiently. “I usually recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces to stay hydrated,” says Registered Dietician Lauren Cornell. 4) LIMIT YOUR SALT INTAKE The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams a day, but ideally, daily sodium consumption should be limited under 1,500 milligrams. This is much less than the amount most Americans consume; an average of over 3,400 milligrams each day. By reducing your daily salt intake, you can lower your blood pressure significantly. An easy strategy is to increase your potassium intake, which lessens the effect of salt. Include potassium-rich foods like fish, fruits, and vegetables in your diet to balance your salt intake.
6) CONSUME PROBIOTICS Those who consume probiotic foods such as yogurt or who take probiotic supplements have been shown to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Fortifying and increasing your digestive capacity with probiotic-rich foods and supplements will help maintain great heart and whole-body health, plus it will provide the essential nutrients you need to receive from your food. 7) EAT MORE BEETROOT The benefits of beetroot come from its ability to raise nitric oxide levels in the body. Nitric oxide is a natural chemical produced by the body to widen arteries. The production of nitric oxide in the body can help lower blood pressure, promote healthy circulation, and give you better overall energy and heart health. Nitric oxide synthesis begins to slow as a part of normal aging, which is why many people turn to beetroot supplements to maintain healthy nitric oxide levels. 8) TAKE A SUPPLEMENT RICH IN FIBER AND ESSENTIAL VITAMINS It can easily become overwhelming to ensure optimal heart health with the many requirements expected of us. That’s why adding a supplement that contains vitamins specifically designed for heart health can be the most effective way to promote heart and brain health, maintain appropriate weight levels, and encourage healthy circulation.
5) CUT OUT FRIED FOODS While eating fried foods can be appealing to our taste buds, it can also be a complete heart health destroyer. According to a new study, eating fried food is tied to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
“In my practice, I combine healthy eating and exercise with an integrative approach to health by recommending CardioFitMD daily superfoods to my patients, It has all the vitamins and minerals, preand probiotics, nitric oxide, and fiber we are most deficient in, in one great-tasting daily drink.”

MUSIC
SONGS FOR & BY TRANSGENDER AND NONBINARY PEOPLE BY BEN NELSON
NewMusicShelf has released the first-ever volume of songs written for and/or by transgender and nonbinary people. Anthology of New Music: Trans & Nonbinary Voices presents composers who highlight the multifaceted intersections unique to the lived experiences of transgender and nonbinary people and stands as a declaration that despite the many historical attempts to isolate them, these communities will not be silenced. Their voices are beautiful, and through printed compositions, the anthology spotlights these important artists so that the world can recognize and revel in their beauty. “As a trans nonbinary singer, I often found opera and musical theater compositions to be aggressively gendered and binary,” reflects Aiden Feltkamp, the book’s curator. “I was at a loss for repertoire that spoke to me.” They approached Dennis Tobenski, a composer and vocalist who runs a boutique music publishing company in New York City, with the idea to build a collection of vocal and piano music that centered on identity. While typical NewMusicShelf publications focus on a particular instrument or voice type, what Feltkamp was proposing would be like no other anthology before — a first of its kind. However, it was a concept that Tobenski, a gay man, could relate with. In the early 2000s, Tobenski recalls very little music featuring a man loving another man. “What did exist wasn’t exactly visible for a kid like me growing up gay in the cornfields of Illinois. I was forced to either sing about loving women, coopt soprano repertoire about loving men, or not sing about love at all.”
music styles that told a variety of stories of the transgender and nonbinary experience. Their only criteria: 1) the composer is trans or nonbinary, 2) the lyricist is trans or nonbinary, or 3) the song was written for or premiered by a trans or nonbinary singer.
Tobenski and Feltkamp envisioned NewMusicShelf Anthology of New Music: Trans & Nonbinary Voices as an opportunity to present songs music lovers could connect to without the barrier of gender. They decided selections would include all vocal ranges in multiple
Feltkamp chose Yoshi Weinberg’s “Captain of My Soul” because the piece represents the traditional art song. It artfully blends contemporary composition with fantastically haunting and dramatic poetry and “is an ideal song for an undergrad or graduate

MUSIC level recital,” Feltkamp, a Turn the Spotlight fellow and graduate of Bard College Conservatory’s Graduate Vocal Arts Program, attests. They selected Pax Ressler’s “Love Song for Me” for inclusion in the anthology because of its up-beat, pride-centric theme. “I hadn’t considered including singer-songwriter songs in the anthology, but Pax’s work fit the inclusion criteria and was simply too good not to include,” Feltkamp continues. Tobenski and Feltkamp hope the pieces in Anthology of New Music: Trans & Nonbinary Voices will be a resource for voice teachers and presenters and reach audiences beyond the book through live performance. “Now no one can say that there aren’t any roles for trans/ nonbinary singers or that there aren’t any trans creators in opera and musical theater,” Feltkamp reflects. “My hope is that the collection is a jumping off point that encourages readers to seek out more works by these, and other, trans and nonbinary composers.” NewMusicShelf Anthology of New Music: Trans & Nonbinary Voices, Vol. 1 is $24.95 at Amazon.
