In the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio in history, two very busy gay men stumble their way into a cinematic love story. This is also the first major studio release to feature an entirely queer principalStarring:cast.
LGBTQ+ films aren’t easy to come by! Despite the progress we’ve made with representation over the years, it can still be difficult to find new queer movies worthy of a watch. Ranging from experimental indie titles to mega-budget studio films, 2022 will offer many exciting and significant works aiming to highlight and platform LGBTQ+ perspectives that the world needs to see. This year, feature-length documentaries and films will focus on sharing real and fictionalized LGBTQ+ experiences that many mainstream audiences and filmmakers a have often dismissed. The LGBTQ+ films and programs of 2022 will operate as significant cultural works that will represent underserved communities in our culture
Queer characters have come a long way in a relatively short time, from the self-loathing middle-aged men of 1970’s The Boys in The Band to the headstrong misfits of this summer’s Fire Island. Queer cinema has evolved too, from the shoestring brilliance of The Watermelon Woman to the big-budget glitter-fest that is Rocketman. While gay characters tended until much too recently to be one-dimensional, white, marginal, and doomed, in 2018 Barry Jenkins won a Best Picture Oscar telling the layered and hopeful story of a gay Black man in Moonlight. Representation matters, and these films and programs provide a variety of stories and styles for you to lose or find yourself in.

Best known for his turn in the “Deadpool” movies, Karan Soni is a prolific comedic character actor who has been slowly charting a course as an unconventional leading man in small independent films. Earlier this year, he starred opposite Geraldine Viswanathan in the charming Indie Spirit winner “7 Days,” which he co-wrote with his partner Roshan Sethi. Most of his “Deadpool” and “Miracle Workers” fans may not realize he’s gay, but Soni has never made his sexuality a secret. Here he stars in a sci-fi comedy short from director Naman Gupta, as a man who uses a time machine to come out to his traditional Indian parents.

BY SHANN CARR As the queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race bring drag into venues from leather bars to lesbian bars and from huge venues to small town book clubs, Bob the Drag Queen stands above the fray. And it isn’t just the stilettos.
SEPTEMBER 2022 17
In 2016, when Bob scored $100,000 for winning the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar” on season 8’s Drag Race, she was new to doing drag herself. When he was a kid, Bob’s mother owned a drag show bar in Columbus, Georgia. But little Bob was terrified of queens after a family friend was shot by a drag queen. He decided that all queens had guns and were dangerous which Bob says today, tongue in cheek, “is correct.” It wasn’t until he saw the first season of Ru Paul’s Drag Race that Bob was inspired to “doll it all” and wow the world of Drag.Born Christopher Caldwell, he has taken the legal name Caldwell Tidicue, and before settling on Bob the Drag Queen, his original drag name was Kitten Withawhip, which was an homage to Ann Margaret in a 1964 film. He identifies as non-binary, pansexual, polyamorous and enjoys she/her and he/him pronouns. He is a whole spectrum of diversity all in oneBobperson.hasbuilt an equally diverse slate of successes since his big win including multiple hit songs, two favorites being “Purse First” and “Wrong Bitch” from Todrick Hall’s hit film “Straight Outta Oz.” She has crushed roles in HBO’s “High Maintenance” and in Berkeley Rep’s “Angels in America”. She also has two side-splitting, live comedy specials under her bedazzled belt.
BOB THE DRAG QUEEN. A QUEEN FOR THE PEOPLE
18 THESTANDARDPS.COM FEATURE
It won’t be a touring podcast though, it will be an all-out, live show, full of comedy, song, drama, and dance.
This Pride season Bob appeared on “Stand Out Comedy: An LGBTQ+ Celebration” on Netflix with nearly 20 other established and rising stars in the queer comedy industry. Bob’s origins in entertainment start from comedy, and she can “cut a bitch” but she doesn’t really come from that place. Her smarts, her interest in human rights and politics, and the fact that her perspective is one of a lover, not a hater distinguishes her from a lot of comedians, gay and straight.
Alexander also asked, “What do you admire most about each other?” Monet answered “Something I love about Bob is that he’s one of the most talented and smartest people I know. Bob is very smart, very brilliant. He has an idea for every second of the day. And he often, more times than not, pulls them off because he is also a very hard worker. I just really respect Roberta’s mind.”
In an interview with Alexander Rodriguez on his show “On the Rocks,” Bob and Monet bicker fast and hard but with tremendous heart, prompting Alexander to ask “Was there ever a spark or an attraction at first? Did you think, ‘hmm, maybe scissor sisters or something?’” Monet answered “Bob is very beautiful, but no, we never had a romantic connection. I call Bob my platonic life partner. We have been through a lot of stuff together with family, personal stuff, and the business. So we really are like platonic life partners.”
For example, on the Netflix show, Bob has some “rules for gay men.” Among them “Stop being mean to lesbians. We need these bitches. We can’t do this by ourselves! The Gay Agenda, it was designed by lesbians, so you know it works! And stop being mean to straight women too. They were the very first allies you ever had.” It is something special for a queer comedian not to hate-on women. Bob’s comedy is structured with openness and inclusivity, while still managing to be sharp. That makes her a feisty crossover queen that can entertain the diverse audiences that the queer community strives to be and to serve. A truly diverse queer audience
In another break-out show, HBO’s “We’re Here,” she stars with Drag Race sisters Eureka O’Hara and Shangela Laquifa. In this series, the trio of drag queens travel across the United States to recruit smalltown residents to participate in one-night-only drag shows. The heartwarming 3rd season of “We’re Here” is set to drop any time now. Thanks to the success of the podcast “Sibling Rivalry” that Bob does with his bestie, drag-sister Monet X Change, they are about to hit the road for a flamboyant, US tour, also called “Sibling Rivalry.”
To get tickets to the tour or info about their collaborations and then to find links to their solo endeavors, you can start at www.
bobandmonet.comThanksAlexander Rodriguez of On the Rocks with Alexander for his contribution to this https://www.ontherocksradioshow.comarticle.
Bob has a sincerity that lets people get a sense of who he is, for real. He says that all the things that are good about him are things his mom taught him. And that the way to his heart is through his mother Martha. Be sweet to her, you’re in, be bad to her you’re out.
SEPTEMBER 2022 19 can be the greatest or the toughest audience. At a time when every comedy performance can be a trigger-minefield, Bob navigates and delivers as safely as possible without compromising. She is an entertainment mega-threat, in the good way, and she has her bases well covered off stage too. She can sustain a longterm friendship, and she is an honest-enough communicator to have navigated polyamory, which is tricky, but it can be SO worth the work -when it works. Recently, Bob has been enjoying some polyamorous adventures with photographer Jacob Ritts and musician Ezra Michel. Seems like she can do everything. You know what she can’t do? Style a wig, a gurl can’t be everything!
He says he likes to put his hands into the dirt and do the work in the queer community, to help it grow, because it is this community that made him grow! Thanks for all you taught him Martha, we’re lovin’ it.
At one point Bob’s Mom saw Monet X Change perform in Atlanta where Monet did one of Martha’s favorite songs “Encourage Yourself” made famous by Donald Lawrence and the Tri-City Singers. Martha called Bob later to say how much it affected her. She said “Monet really healed my heart. She really is my child. She doesn’t even realize how much that meant to me.” And with that seal of approval, Monet made his way into the inner circle with Bob.
Bob says he is a queen for the people, and he’s proven it with a political willingness to get involved. Early on, he was arrested in full drag, at Times Square, during one of the many protests he participated in involving public drag queen weddings. His group of friends and activists vowed to keep performing the drag wedding protests until gay marriage became legal. Well, there it is, we have Bob to thank for gay marriage too.

First, though, you’re going to laugh because author Wade Rouse is a natural-born humorist, and his family is a great launching-pad for him despite the splinters and near-clawing despair of the overall theme of this book. That sense of humor can’t seem to let a good story go, even when it’s obvious that there’s something heartbreaking waiting in the bullpen. Which brings us to the father-son-baseball triple-play. It may seem to some readers that such a book has been done and done again, but this one feels different. Rouse excels at filling in the blanks on the other, essential teammates in this tale and, like any big skirmish, readers are left breathless, now knowing the final score until the last out.

SEPTEMBER 2022 21 BOOK REVIEW ALWAYS OVERBOOKED
If you like your memoirs sweet, but with a dash of spice and some tears, right here you go. For you, “Magic Season” is a book to look
Love, Wade Rouse says, is “shaped like a baseball.” You catch it, throw it, or hit it out of the park, but “You don’t know where it’s going.”
You’ve always looked up to your dad. Sometimes it happened literally, like when you were a child and “up” was the only way to see his face hovering over yours. You’ve looked up at him in anger, embarrassment, dismissal, and yeah, you’ve looked up to him in the best ways, too – never forgetting, as in the memoir “Magic Season” by Wade Rouse, that sometimes, the hardest thing is seeing eye-to-eye. Wade Rouse threw like a girl. He couldn’t catch a baseball, either, and he wasn’t much of a runner as a young boy. He tried, because his father insisted on it, but Rouse was better with words and books and thoughts... He was nothing like his elder brother, Todd, who was a natural hunter, a good sportsman, and an athlete, and their father never let Rouse forgetAndit. yet, curiously, Rouse and his dad bonded over baseball. Specifically, their love of Cardinals baseball became the one passion they shared. The stats, the players, the idea that “Anything can happen,” the hope that there’d be a World Series at the end of every season was the glue they needed. It was what saved them when Todd was killed in a motorcycle accident. When Rouse came out to his father, Cards baseball was what brought them back together after two years of estrangement. In between games, though, and between seasons, there was yelling, cruelty, and all the times when father and son didn’t communicate. Rouse accepted, but didn’t like, his father’s alcoholism or his harsh life-lessons: his father didn’t like Rouse’s plans for his own future. Rouse admits that he cried a lot, and he was surprised at the rare times when his father displayed emotion – especially since an Ozarks man like Ted Rouse didn’t do things like that. Until the time was right.
Oh, my. Oh, my, but “Magic Season” is a ten-hankie book.
Just be sure you never take “your eye off it, from beginning to end.”

Ever since its inception in 1984, DAP Health has centered its work on advocating on behalf of populations whose voices are often unheard — people with HIV/AIDS, people of color, those living in poverty, unhoused individuals, and people with disabilities, and people struggling with substance use. Through it all, the organization has never wavered in its determination to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and today continues to: Offer free onsite and mobile HIV and STI testing, including mailing at-home HIV tests to those unable to access its main Palm SpringsLinkcampus.people newly diagnosed with HIV to care — and help them remain in care — so that they can be undetectable, therefore unable to transfer the virus to others (U=U). “Unfortunately, equity.history is repeating itself,” says David Brinkman, CEO of DAP Health, an advocacy-based health care organization that provides service to more than 10,000 individuals annually throughout the Coachella Valley. “With queer rights falling under attack across our nation, and our government’s dispiriting lack of urgency in responding to the growing Monkeypox (Mpox) crisis, 2022 looks, sounds, and feels just like the early ’80s, when HIV/ AIDS was decimating our community and politicians turned their backs, refusing to act. As we learned then, silence equals death, and when our leaders abandon us, it is up to members of our community to join forces and advocate on our own behalf. Only by coming out in unprecedented numbers and raising our collective voice this year can we show local, state, and federal officials that their apathy concerning LGBTQ people is absolutely unacceptable.”
BY STEVEN HENKE What better way to remember those lost to HIV/AIDS than to unite as a community, raise our collective voice, and keep advocating for health equality, just as our brothers and sisters did at the start of the epidemic four decades ago Two thousand community members — from babies in strollers to seniors — are expected to participate in DAP Health’s annual Desert AIDS Walk, which will kick off at Ruth Hardy Park on Saturday, October 29, tracing a route through downtown Palm Springs. designs are a combination of creativity, enthusiasm, team work and hard work. Your finished home is the vision and goal, from day one. My work as a designer is intimate. I have to know my clients deeply to really understand what their world needs to be. It is that understanding that creates the best home and my finest work. A home is your most intimate space, it should reflect you, your tastes, lifestyle and your family.
So, how do you find the right designer or design firm to work with? What are the questions you should be asking yourself and your potential designer? And, how do you avoid pitfalls in that relationship? It really isn’t all that difficult but, like anything worthwhile in life, some planning and maintenance is important.

Enthusiasm from your designer is everything! I have been told, many times over the years that the reason a client hired me over other perspective firms, was my enthusiasm for their project. I don’t go into potential client meetings with the goal of signing them. I enter each new meeting wondering if we are going to like each other. It is as simple as that. Find someone you like. It is like making a new friend, if we like each other, the collaboration cannot help but succeed.Trulysuccessful
BY DANN FOLEY INDESIGN
For more than 3 decades I have been heading my own design firm. It is safe to say that I have worked with very type of personality imaginable. Some clients want to be intimately involved in the entire process, while others want to see a design presentation and then want to be called only when the project is finished. Either way, the design process remains the same.
NAVIGATING THE PROCESS OF DESIGN: FINDING THE RIGHT DESIGNER FOR YOU!
Some projects, just as some clients are more challenging than others. Ultimately, my job is be a problem solver. The vast majority of the time the problem solving I am referring to is in the design itself. Creativity is the key to any successful project but, at its core, the design process is really about problem solving. Those problems can be related to architecture, space, budget, needs/desires, etc. In every case it is up to the professional to guide the client through a myriad of options, selections and issues. Together, we make a client’s dreams come true. The optimum relationship in design, is a collaboration between me and the client. We each have specific roles to fill. I listen to what the client desires most and then help them to see the bigger picture, a wider possible vision and the potential limitations of space and budget (that is where the problem solving comes in most handy).
As I tell all my potential clients, “I will give you everything you ask for but, in a way you dreamed possible.” We pride ourselves on projects that are delivered on time, on budget and with results that exceed our client’s expectations. That is the experience you deserve!

Questions To Ask Yourself (beforehand)
o This is very important. I have met far too many homeowners who think because they renovated a bathroom themselves, they can manage a job site. A general contractor is imperative when renovations are going to take place. And that person should have direct access to and be responsible to your designer. It is the designer’s job to ensure that their vision and details are met by the craftsmen.

PROFILE CENTRAL TIME AT GRAND CENTRAL PALM SPRINGS
“Palm Springs is now a year-year destination,” said Rita Capponi, founder, and co-owner of Grand Central. “That means that Palm Springs is also a year-round food destination, so we’ve expanded our hours, and our offerings to meet the demand.”

“As they used to say at our namesake Grand Central Station in New York City, ‘meet us under the clock’,” said co-owner and founder John Diskin. “It may be the height of the summer, but we’re already seeing a real pick-up in bookings and inquiries for the Holiday Season, so call us now to reserve your spot.”
“I remember vividly in 1979 seeing my first Apple II computer,” recalls Lucia. “That night I dreamt that I was a ten-year-old boy walking on the shore, and embedded in the sand, I found a black box. When I opened the box, small dots of light danced in the night sky. When I woke up, I knew the computer would become my medium.”
In the ’80s, Lucia coauthored the Designer’s Tool Kit, a graphics program published by Apple Computer. Lucia’s software and artwork on the Apple II computer work are archived at the Rochester Museum of Play.
The answer at Palm Springs’ iconic Grand Central it’s always “Grand Central Time” for brunch, munch, lunch, dinner or the new “nibbles and bites” offerings at the restaurant that is, literally, at the center of everything in Palm Springs, smack dab in the middle of the classic downtown gathering spot, La Plaza. And the new offering “Tequila Thursdays” with a wide range of high end Mezcal food & drink.

What time is it?
With a patio, dining room and bar long known as the place “to see and be seen” by Palm Springs and Hollywood’s weekend glitterati, Grand Central also boasts a true “hidden gem”: its spacious special event space, complete with separate entrance, for the perfect Instagram-able wedding, bachelorette party, rehearsal dinner, birthday or business gathering. With a regular rotation of local artists, the “Art Gallery” special event space is quickly becoming a “go to” spot for this year’s post-worst-of-COVID Holiday parties.
SEPTEMBER 2022 31
In addition to its artistic backdrop, the spacious “Art Gallery” special event space can comfortably accommodate 150 for a seated dinner or over 200 for standing cocktail reception. Additionally, Grand Central is open for a full buyout of the restaurant with the “Art Gallery” room set up for dancing either with live music or a DJ. What makes Grand Central Café Palm Springs unique? “Our brunch is very much based on California cuisine with influences of the coffee cafe culture of Auckland, New Zealand, Dublin, Ireland and Melbourne, Australia,” John explains. “Our goal and our mission are to bring those flavors to Palm Springs.”
As computer technology exploded, Lucia innovatively used images, text, animation, and interactivity to tell her story of leaving her homeland at three to emigrate to the United States. In 1969, starting at sixteen, she returned to Bolivia. The experience was overwhelming. Lucia created a CD-ROM Sangre Boliviana that has been shown around the world and is stored in perpetuity at the National Library in Paris. Lucia’s work can be seen online at www. Lgmanimation.com and www.lgmappleii.com
“For dinner, we expand our offerings to bring a fine dining experience in a more casual and relaxed environment,” says Rita,
“As a LatinX artist, Lucia blends cutting-edge technology with themes of social justice and gender equality,” said Grand Central husband and wife team Rita and John. “This is exactly the sort of art and perspective we want to highlight and celebrate in our restaurant gallery space.”
32 THESTANDARDPS.COM PROFILE known for her personalized touch as hostess and creator of Grand Central’s iconic and seasonally changing “Book Holiday Tree” in the main dining room. “Good food doesn’t have to be overly complicated, and lovely surroundings don’t have to be stuffy. Why the name Grand Central? “In cities and train stations throughout the years, people have been meeting ‘under the clock’,” explains John. “Grand Central’s iconic clock is a reminder to take a breath. Take some time to relax and enjoy innovative food and drink at our table” And most importantly, reiterates Rita, “Take some time to be with family and friends.” Grand Central opened in May of 2018 after extensive renovations to the previous Palm Springs Institution, Desmond’s Department Store. After sitting vacant for over a decade, owners and husband and wife, John and Rita, revitalized and reimagined the space as a place for friends to gather and share good conversation, great cocktails, and a wonderful meal.

BY LAUREN WOLFER
With this breakthrough film, Federico Fellini launched both himself and his wife and collaborator Giulietta Masina to international stardom, breaking with the neorealism of his early career in favor of a personal, poetic vision of life as a bittersweet carnival. The infinitely expressive Masina registers both childlike wonder and heartbreaking despair as Gelsomina, loyal companion to the traveling strongman Zampanò (Anthony Quinn, in a toweringly physical performance), whose callousness and brutality gradually wear down her gentle spirit. Winner of the very first Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language Film, La Strada possesses the purity and timeless resonance of a fable and remains one of cinema’s most exquisitely moving visions of humanity struggling to survive in the face of life’s cruelties.
The Palm Springs Cultural Center will join the international celebration of Italian film director Federico Fellini’s (1920–1993) centennial with screenings of his masterpieces as part of the Fellini 100 Tour. Coordinated by Paola Ruggiero and Camilla Cormanni of Cinecittà, the Fellini 100 Tour has traveled to major museums and film institutions worldwide despite being interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour launched in Fellini’s birthplace of Rimini, Italy, with the opening of the International Federico Fellini Museum, and has since visited institutions such as UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the British Film Institute (BFI), the Academy Museum in Los Angeles, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA).
One of the most influential directors of the 20th century, Fellini’s films are known for their surreal, dream-like imagery and eccentric characters, often combining a playful carnival-like atmosphere with biting social critique. Fellini’s body of work has inspired several generations of directors including Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Sofia Coppola, and Pedro Almodóvar. “It’s a tremendous honor for the Cultural Center to partner with Cinecittà in celebrating Fellini’s legacy as one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema.” said Program Director Lauren Wolfer. “These films deserve to be seen as the Maestro intended.”
Federico Fellini returned to the provincial landscape of his childhood with this carnivalesque reminiscence, recreating his hometown of Rimini in Cinecittà’s studios and rendering its daily life as a circus of social rituals, adolescent desires, male fantasies, and political subterfuge. Sketching a gallery of warmly observed comic caricatures, Fellini affectionately evokes a vanished world haloed with the glow of memory, even as he sends up authority figures representing church and state, satirizing a country stultified by Fascism. Winner of Fellini’s fourth Academy Award for best foreignlanguage film, Amarcord remains one of the director’s best-loved creations, beautifully weaving together Giuseppe Rottuno’s colorful cinematography, Danilo Donati’s extravagant costumes and sets, and Nino Rota’s nostalgia-tinged score.
November 4 - LA STRADA (1954)
One of the greatest films about film ever made, Federico Fellini’s 8½ marks the moment when the director’s always-personal approach to filmmaking fully embraced self-reflexivity, pioneering a stream-of-consciousness style that darts exuberantly among flashbacks, dream sequences, and carnivalesque reality, and turning one man’s artistic crisis into a grand epic of the cinema. Marcello Mastroianni plays Guido Anselmi, a director whose new project is collapsing around him, along with his life, as he struggles against creative block and helplessly juggles the women in his life—including Anouk Aimée, Sandra Milo, and Claudia Cardinale. An early working title for 8½ was The Beautiful Confusion, and Fellini’s masterpiece is

I’ve given a lot of thought to this conundrum and came up with a solution that I’d like you to consider. I hope that you’ll choose to join me in this launch to re-claim our Bars and Clubs. I call it OPERATION: OCCUPY GAY BARS!
Did you know that you can now purchase delicious bar food in the Bars in which you drink? In Palm Springs, on Arenas that would be at Hunters and Chill Bar, and it used to be at The Eagle 501 & Streetbar at the height of the Pandemic (thank you COVID). We could do like the Spanish, Portuguese or Italians do and eat meals, like dinner, on a weekend night at the Bar rather than leaving to go to our local restaurants. This leaves the other 5 nights a week to support our local restaurants and lets our visitors enjoy them on the weekends.
BARS! 1)
If we are in our bars at FULL OCCUPANCY and a group(s) of Bridal Party girls arrive at the front door, they would be told that the same number of gay men must leave the bar before the whole group of the bachelorettes could enter. Do you see what I see? There is no discrimination there, just a simple matter of numbers, right?
46 THESTANDARDPS.COM PERSPECTIVE
BY JILL LANGHAM
I hope you are all well and are mindful of the extreme temperatures that we’re experiencing and are staying hydrated and safe. Over the last three months my article, The Unbridled Bridal Parties, talked about the state of Gay Bars worldwide which has left many in the gay community disillusioned. It’s a real issue and one that I am very concerned about.
In today’s world, most things revolve around numbers, like mathematics, money or in this case, occupancy. It’s my sincere belief that we can affect a shift in the current atmosphere at our local watering holes without the fear of discrimination claims or by creating a dangerous situation like gay bashings or violence. Instead, it will be more like a peaceful demonstration. I believe the time has come for us to remind the Bar and club owners just who it was that filled up their coffers with cash all these years. And one way to do this is for us to return to the bars, enmasse week after week. It will take some planning and may include dressing a certain way to really prove our point. For example, if you agree, we could all wear to the bars, a certain color to show our unity allowing us to once again, OCCUPY GAY BARS.
Let’s take this one step further, COVID shifted our town’s dynamics and hundreds if not thousands of Gay men moved to the Coachella Valley. I don’t know about you, but I can’t figure out who lives here and who is just visiting. So, I am proposing that Palm Springs in conjunction with KGAY and our local DJ’s put on an old-fashioned “Meet & Greet,” in our new greenspace for us to get familiarized with one another. We can again wear COLORS to help identify who’s who. We, as the long-time residents, could wear red to signify the Root Chakra which represents Community, i.e., Roots, while the new Boys on the Block could wear Orange, which happens to represent the Sacral Chakra, of creativity. Once we know who’s who, it will make it easier for us to come together again. We’ve been separated and alone for over 2 long years and like the past, have lost many loved ones. But now there are new friends and lovers to meet and enjoy but we must know who we are as a community. Together we are strong!
You guys created FUN, FROLIC and F**King! And you sure didn’t do it before 9pm, did you? Over 50 is sexy and alive. Don’t buy into the “I’m too old and fat!” mentality, it’s a bunch of lies. You are way more vital than your straight counterparts and always will be. You have set the tone for entertainment for hundreds of decades, if not longer. Can you imagine if on a chosen day, every Gay Male who works in the entertainment industry around the world did NOT go to work? If you thought COVID stopped the world, think again! Maybe this is what it would take for the world at large to notice and appreciate the breadth of your contributions. Just saying……… So, what do you think? Are you willing to participate?
But going to bars is not enough. We will need to stay in the Bars after eating to do what we all used to do in the past and DANCE! Yes, it’s time to put on your Dancing shoes, kick up your heels and Dance! And please don’t let me hear you say that you are too old? What Kool-Aid have you been drinking?

Thirty (30) years ago, the gays in Palm Springs, wrote a “G” on dollar bills to show the town’s business owners just how much of their money drawers got filled with dollars you spent. Sadly, that was breaking a law by defacing money, but it was nonetheless, very effective. Now, it’s our turn to do the right thing, in the right way. We could use sheer numbers to be seen and eventually heard and effect the change we want to see, by being the change to get what we want.

BY PAUL HUTNICK Joey Diamond is a social media influencer who first rose to fame on YouTube in 2009 when he made a video coming out as gay. “At that time, it was really scary,” he admits. “I was afraid that it would forever end my chances in pop and R&B.” Of Filipino descent, Joey grew up in Hayward California, outside of San Francisco. His mother and father were very young when they had him and did not raise him together, but they were strong individuals who managed to provide for their son the best way they could. It wasn’t easy but their struggle instilled in young Joey a will to survive and thrive. In his toughest times, he found singing and music to be his savior. Joey released his first single, “Simple Things,” in 2014. Shortly after, he dropped an album and embarked on his first music tour, releasing additional singles along the way. With the success of the tour and his growing YouTube fanbase, he was invited to join a boy band, but it would be a short-lived project. Within a year, the members decided to go in different directions and Joey took time to re-evaluate what was important to him.
He now lives in Miami, working with creatives like Jace M on innovative new sounds. They are out now with their updated take on the *NSYNC favorite, “Tearin’ Up My Heart.” The track is being distributed by the Queen House Music label.
“Joey and I met through friends,” explains Jace M. “He came to me with an original record he had already recorded called ‘Everyday’ and asked me to remix it. I was immediately impressed by his amazing voice, and I knew right away I would want to find a project to collaborate on. One day, I was with DJ GSP (head of Queen House Music) and *NSYNC’s ‘Tearin’ Up My Heart’ came on the radio and my brain was like this is the perfect song for Joey!”

I am so grateful to Queen House Music for allowing Jace and me this chance to redo ‘Tearin’ Up My Heart’ in ourJoeyway.”and Jace take the track in a new direction, incorporating house and disco elements for an uplifting club sound. Along with the radio edit, Jace M has called upon some of the biggest remixers and producers in the club industry to release their own versions of their track. The remix package includes eleven mixes of varying sounds from techno to hard tribal, making the track suitable for every dance floor. There is even an acoustic mix with a huge orchestral movement!
Jace M is DJ and producer, specializing in happy, uplifting, circuit music with vocals. He draws inspiration from many of the leading gay DJs from the early 2000s: luminaries like Abel, Ralphie Rosario, Tony Moran, Manny Lehman, Joe Gauthreaux, Toy Armada, and DJ GRIND. As they did, Jace produces his own dancefloor music. He has released a slew of remixes, both by himself, and with collaborators including Joe Gauthreaux, Toy Armada, and Mauro Mozart. Jace M has also released an original track, “We Won’t Go” with Joe Gauthreaux. He works full-time as a computer engineer. In the evenings, Jace is produces new music and on weekends, he is traveling the world DJing. Both agree that “Tearin’ Up My Heart” is only the beginning of their collaboration. “Joey and I are definitely working together again!” Jace M confirms. “With the help of our label, we’re deciding on if we should do another remake or an original song we write together. We both have half-finished songs sitting around. What better opportunity to finish them up?”

Jake Dean Taylor plays the role of the ex-boyfriend in “Maybe We Shouldn’t Talk”. Australian Actor Stephen Multari and up and coming pop artist Kelechi are also prominently featured. The dancers are Kyle McCraw and former Glee cast member RILAN. Julie Vegliante, who has worked with Lady Gaga, choreographed the moves. The role of the snake is played by Beau, a real-life python that was provided by the same family of handlers who supplied Britney Spears with the sevenfoot python she performed with in her “I’m A Slave 4 U” production at the 2001 VMA’s. Stewart insists Beau was “sweet and well-behaved.”
“My ex and I argued over anything and everything,” recalls Stewart Taylor from his LA home. “If there was a boundary that I set, he would cross it every time. I’m not saying he was a bad person. I did things, too, that hurt the relationship. It’s just that we all have our demons. I didn’t respond well to his and he didn’t respond well to mine. Some people simply shouldn’t be together.”
Stewart Taylor is an LA-based out singer, songwriter, dancer, and MMG model. He grew up in a small town outside of New York City, performing in local talent shows and Lower East Side clubs. He graduated from Boston’s Berklee College of Music.
MUSIC MIC DROP…STEWART TAYLOR GETS THE LAST WORD
He has collaborated with several Grammy-nominated songwriters and producers including Charlie Puth, Kara DioGuardi, (P!nk, Katy Perry) and David Pramik (Selena Gomez) and has released multiple singles, notably 2019’s “Mess Your Hair Up,” 2021’s “Cover Boy”, and 2022’s “Maybe We Shouldn’t Talk,” a song Stewart Taylor premiered earlier this summer at California’s firstever Venice Pride Festival.
“My look, sound, and artistry have changed dramatically since I first started releasing music in 2015,” Stewart Taylor acknowledges. “Back in college, I was heavily inspired by David Bowie and everyone I came across expected me to sing rock music. I love rock, but my heart is in soul and pop, more in the line of early George Michael and Prince. I’ve worked hard to get in touch with the R&B influences I grew up on and I’ve become a better dancer, singer, and songwriter in ways that I never could have imagined a decade ago.”
BY PAUL HUTNICK
The video for “Maybe We Shouldn’t Talk” reflects on his past struggles. Directed by Benjamin Farren and filmed primarily at Vasquez Rocks National Park in California, the video includes scenes of two lovers chasing one another, battling it out and then passionately making up, all in front of a fantastical canyon backdrop. Taylor made sure to include a game of tug of war in the video to depict the constant push and pull he experienced. He admits he took some creative license. “Did my ex and I ever fight and chase each other through a desert? No. But it’s more interesting to recreate our dynamic through the lens of fantasy and set it against that backdrop because the desolate wasteland represents how it felt for me emotionally.”
Stewart Taylor sings about the experience in “Maybe We Shouldn’t Talk,” his catchy true-to-life pop tune about breaking ties with an ex-lover. “It can be extremely difficult to move on from someone you love,” he continues, “even when you know they’re bad for you. Sometimes the only thing you can do to stop the unhealthy cycles of a toxic relationship is to stop talking altogether.”

If there is one thing Stewart Taylor has learned these past few years, it’s the importance of great friends, creativity, and walking away from unhealthy relationships. “I learned the hard way that being half of a destructive duo will never make a person whole,” he says. “Walking away is so much easier said than done, but if I can leave the toxic relationship I was in, I believe anyone can.”
