For LGBTQ individuals, finding LGBTQ-friendly travel destinations is an important part of the experience where there are many options for those seeking a safe and welcoming space to prioritize their mental and physical health.

Sometimes a break away from the day-to-day grind is exactly what your mind and body need, and traveling gives you the space and time to relax, check in with yourself, and divest yourself of some of the stress that work, personal relationships, and general life come with, even if only temporarily.

So, whether you want to switch cities for a long weekend or take a cruise for a longer break, here are some of the top LGBTQfriendly travel destinations. From gorgeous beach destinations to

dynamic urban experiences, LGBTQ travelers are always looking for that next “new” place to visit.

One thing to remember, though: The world is still in a state of uncertainty. So, if you’re planning a trip, you should check travel restrictions for the destination you are hoping to visit and always consider warnings from the State Department and the CDC.

Because no matter what type of trip you’ve been dreaming of, we want to help you turn 2023 into the year you make it a reality.

Here are the top destinations that should be on the radar for queer travelers in 2023.

COVER

SITGES, SPAIN

This is one of Europe’s top LGBT travel destinations and it’s not hard to see why! Around an hour outside of Barcelona, Sitges is a beautiful destination full of pristine beaches, cobbled streets lined with quaint cafes and bars, and a large gay community. There are also regular events throughout the calendar year that draw LGBT travelers to this beachy town such as the huge annual Pride events that take place with gay parties on the beaches. Although neighboring Barcelona is often thought of first with its famous gay district of Eixample favored by many, Sitges has come up to challenge it as the number one destination in Spain for gay travelers.

OSAKA, JAPAN

Queer travelers are discovering Osaka, a more laid-back Japanese destination than frenetic Tokyo. The city, which generally celebrates its cherry blossom season in late March, has a moderate climate and eclectic gay scene, with plenty of niche clubs. Some travelers describe Osaka as the country’s most LGBTQ-friendly city, due to the relaxed attitude of its citizens. Visitors will find all the modern conveniences, along with plenty of culture and history to explore.

VANCOUVER, CANADA

Canada is famous for being possibly the most progressive country in the world when it comes to openness and inclusion for all minorities, including sexual minorities. Vancouver is a great cosmopolitan city set amongst a backdrop of jagged, snowy mountains and has a bustling LGBTQ scene with everything from gay shops, hotels, bars, clubs and restaurants to choose from. Davie Village is the heart of the LGBTQ community in Vancouver and its vibrant, open and welcoming nature makes it perfect for gay and lesbian travelers to visit and feel safe and comfortable.

TUCSON, ARIZONA

Southern Arizona’s Tucson has been called the state’s Austin—a city that embraces a bit of weirdness, as well as it’s LGBTQ citizens. Plus, with the University of Arizona amidst its borders, the city always seems to feel young and active. Queer visitors can focus on the nightlife or get out and hike and explore. Saguaro National Park, a local treasure, is split into two parks that sit next to Tucson, and other mountainous areas around the metro area offer unparallel hiking options for active travelers.

MYKONOS, GREECE

Mykonos is known as the LGBTQ hub of Greece and is perfect for the traveler who longs for stunning landscapes, beautiful beaches, traditional little villages and a good gay scene. This Greek Island is known for its welcoming nature and is often chosen as a honeymoon destination for LGBTQ travelers due to how welcoming and inclusive it is. Mykonos Town, however, is a great place to visit for solo travelers for its lively gay party scene, full of bars and full of likeminded people to meet and make friends with. This island is home to some of the best gay beaches, so they are worth exploring if you like to soak in the sun and do some swimming.

MIAMI AND KEY WEST

These cities are some of the safest and most diverse cities in the US in terms of sexual minorities. Both Miami and Key West are famed for their large gay and lesbian communities and are great for those wishing to go long haul to more tropical destinations. The gay 12th Street beach brings out the bronzed and beautiful in Miami and is a great place for those looking for the hustle and bustle mixed with lots of sun. Key West is a great gay destination, known for historically being a gay holiday destination for those looking for relaxation and taking it easy.

HONG KONG

Gay Games 11 will finally be held in Hong Kong from November 3-11, 2023, a year later than originally planned, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (Guadalajara, Mexico will serve as co-host for travelers unable to trek to Asia.) The Games are viewed as an important marker for the city’s queer community, and will include sports like swimming, sailing, dodgeball, fencing, tennis, and martial arts. This will be the first Gay Games in Asia.

ASPEN, COLORADO

This stunning town, located in Colorado’s scenic Rocky Mountains, is a great choice for hikers much of the year, but it really comes into its own in the winter months, with some of the country’s best ski resort (including nearby Snowmass). Many queer travelers aim to visit during the popular Aspen Gay Ski Week, which usually takes place during the month of January each year.

FRENCH POLYNESIA

French Polynesia is one of the most beautiful, secluded and stunning places on Earth, and it is also one of the most welcoming, friendly and inclusive too! In French Polynesia, no laws against samesex sexual activity have ever existed in the collectivity and LGBT travelers are afforded all the same rights as heterosexual people. Beautiful Bora Bora is perhaps one of the most luxurious destinations on earth. The concepts of gender identity here are also very different to western culture, and Tahitian culture actually recognizes a third gender called ‘Rae Rae’ – meaning ‘men who are raised as women’. This makes this a perfect destination for everyone in the community, being especially perfect for same-sex couples looking for a romantic getaway, wedding or honeymoon destination where they can be open about who are.

MEXICO

Mexico continues to be a top destination for queer travelers. The country’s tourism department (SECTUR) reports 3.5 million LGBTQ+ visitors annually. The beachside resort town of Acapulco first gained an international queer contingent in the mid-20th century as a magnet for Hollywood celebs. It has recently experienced a resurgence and now its LGBTQ+ scene and businesses are luring more queers back to the region. It’s gaining a reputation as a gay party town with Las Vegas-style drag shows, techno nightclubs, and beachside dancing.

The capital of Jalisco, Guadalajara, is often called the “Gay Capital of Mexico” due to its embrace of the queer community. It is among the most LGBTQ-accepting in Latin America (Mexico City also ranks in the top five). Guadalajara is Mexico’s second largest city and offers diversity in food, cultural, and entertainment options. Its gayborhood is in the historic center of the city, where parties spill into the streets most nights. Come during February to experience the local Carnival.

The Riviera Maya destination of Playa del Carmen features white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. There are three gay beaches here: Mamitas Beach, Coco Beach, and Xangrila Beach.

Becoming known as the “Mexican San Francisco,” Puerto Vallarta features some of the most beautiful beaches in the LGBTQ-embracing state of Jalisco. The city’s Romantic Zone is a popular spot during the day and locals and tourists mingle at buzzy queer clubs nearly every night of the week. During Pride (celebrated here in May), the neighborhood becomes one big block party. Puerto Vallarta offers many activities for those who want to have more adventurous experiences, including day trips to Punta de Mita and nearby Marietas Islands, where the diversity of birds and sea life has earned it the nickname of “the Mexican Galapagos.”

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

San Antonio has so much to offer LGBTQ tourists, including a bustling gay strip and The Bonham Exchange—a former German social club that has an expansive outdoor patio area, enormous ballroom area, and multiple rooms that each feels like a separate themed club. Plus, queer-owned Hopscotch, is a mustsee art gallery that focuses on immersive art as well as optical illusions. There’s also a great foodie scene here, with amazing restaurants like Landrace.

AUSTRALIA

Australia is a dream destination for adventurers, albeit a distant one. The nation’s Great Barrier Reef just off the coast of Queensland is rightfully on many travelers’ bucket lists — and Sydney is undeniably a gay hot spot. In Sydney, New South Wales, the world-famous Harbor Bridge and Opera House are must-sees, with the more daring climbing the bridge itself. Also worth a visit is the Royal Botanical Gardens, the gay Oxford Street LGBTQ+ district, and the Sea Life Aquarium to observe Sphen and Magic (aka Sphengic), the world-famous gay penguin couple. Walk the cliffs outside Bondi Beach and Manley, where at least 80 gay men were killed in the latter portion of the last century. In Queensland the Great Barrier Reef may be the most famous tourist destination, but the state is also home to Daintree Rainforest.

CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA

Colombia seems to be on everyone’s lists, and with good reason. The country, almost twice the size of Texas, features biodiversity, culture, and some fantastic cities. Cartagena, on Colombia’s gorgeous Caribbean coast, is popular for its walled Old City, with a vibe that’s almost like a Latin New Orleans—cobblestone streets and endless shopping and dining. But the city, famous for its queer friendliness, also boasts the modern high-rises of Bocagrande—so travelers can find the best of both worlds in one destination.

MALTA

Malta is a small archipelago of islands, just off the southern coast of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. The country has been continuously occupied for almost 8,000 years as an important port and trading hub connecting Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Its culture reflects these intersectional roots and Maltese food is a nuanced blend of many worlds. Malta is gaining a reputation as one of the most queerinclusive spots in Europe, with festive annual Pride celebrations every September. It would be difficult to name every gay bar and LGBTQwelcoming establishment in Malta, but there are a few that top our list. We love club Lollipop, located in the coastal capital city of Valetta. The Birdcage Lounge in Rabat has a fun mixed crowd and karaoke. Though not an exclusively LGBTQ+ space, lesbian-owned Maori is popular due to its monthly parties for queer women. The Phoenicia in Valletta offers 1920s elegance and 5-star luxury while the Marco Polo Party Hostel in St Julian’s provides a lively mixed crowd.

THAILAND

Thailand has a rich culture and long embrace of gender and sexual diversity, and outlaws LGBTQ+ discrimination. In the most LGBTQwelcoming country in Southeast Asia, Bangkok is considered the region’s queer capital. On the city’s pedestrian-only streets in the gayborhood Silom, you’ll find gay bars including Circus, Balcony, and Stranger Bar (considered the epicenter of Bangkok drag culture). The neighborhood features many other LGBTQ+ establishments including hotels, massage parlors, clubs, saunas, and restaurants. After partying all night refresh by checking in for an advanced wellness experience at luxury spa Sindhorn Wellness by Resense. Phuket is another common queer destination. There the Patong neighborhood plays home to gay bar and cabaret club Zig Bar/Zag Club and the Patong beach where Phuket Pride is held each year. Visit Koh Samui in southern Thailand, where the queer-run Samui Elephant Sanctuary allows elephants to retire from giving rides or entertaining tourists. Enjoy your own refuge at gay-owned Six Senses Samui Thailand which features an infinity pool overlooking the gulf of Thailand — and your own tree house. Party at Pride Bar Samui which features drag queens and karaoke.

KATHMANDU

Nepal goes one step further, choosing the acronym LGBTQI+ to actively represent the intersex community, all of whom have been granted citizenship under its anti-discrimination protection laws, which were passed in 2015. From Nepal, it is a healthy climb into the Himalayan mountains, with several LGBTQI+ tour operators offering their services for the trip. Alternatively, hang out in Kathmandu for eight days at the end of the summer, and you can enjoy festivals that include the spectacle of the Procession of the Kumari, who is anointed as a living goddess.

So, no matter where you decide to go, be it around your town or around the world, make it an awesome, memorable and most of all a relaxing getaway…

DESTINATIONS THAT ARE UNAPOLOGETICALLY ANTI-GAY

With the previous article in mind, here are the 20 destinations you might want to think twice about before you plan a trip there. In many of the places on this list, LGBTQ rights improve every year. But recognition rarely equals acceptance. In some countries, samesex marriages are recognized and celebrated. But toleration and acceptance of the LGBTQ community is far from universal. Being queer is illegal in nearly 80 countries and punishable by death, including some very popular travel destinations.

The list is based on 10 factors related to LGBTQ+ safety, including protections against discrimination, criminalization of violence, illegal same-sex relationships and more. Sources include Human Rights Watch, the Gallup World Poll and ILGA (the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association), just to name a few. Along with the data, countries’ individual laws were reviewed to create an LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index that reflects the most current information in an ever-changing world.

Although some great progress has been made, for example, several countries legalized same-sex marriage and decriminalized same-sex relationships; there are still, others like Russia and the United States are taking steps backward, particularly with their approach to propaganda laws and anti-trans legislation. In the U.S., over 300 antiLGBTQ+ and anti-trans laws were proposed in 2022 alone, which is very eye-opening statistic.

LGBTQ TRAVEL SAFETY: THE LOWEST RANKED COUNTRIES

According to the LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index, Brunei is the most dangerous country for gay travelers in 2023, followed by Saudi Arabia and Nigeria. In 2019, Brunei passed a penal code that made homosexual acts punishable by death by stoning. Nigeria and Saudi Arabia still utilize the death penalty as a possible punishment for being LGBTQ+, while lesser punishments can include lashings, flogging or life in prison. Nigeria even criminalizes the discussion of LGBT rights and gender expression. Following are the 20 most LGBTQ non-welcoming destinations in 2023.

Longitude and latitude. Finding one’s direction, one’s place in the world. Maritime metaphors aside, travel and the home are intrinsically intertwined. Seek, wander, explore, this is what a full life is about.

Each year as The Standard Magazine celebrates travel in its pages, I am reminded of the power of travel on the mind, soul, spirit and of course, our sense of personal style. A wealth of experience, both near and far, can influence who we are in our lives and in our homes. So, as in years past, let’s celebrate travel and survey those places that we are drawn to and how they influence us in our daily lives and in the way, we choose to live.

For me the answer for me in my yearning for travel is, it always seemed to be a part of my DNA. I have been so fortunate to have both parents and grandparents who traveled far and wide…and often. I learned from an early age how exploring other places and cultures can so deeply affect the way I live today. Each new experience adds to the story of who I am and who I am becoming, and every new treasure holds that story and enhances my home as a part of that story.

I have in years past, in these very pages, shared with you my own experiences with both travel and how to live with and display those things that you bring into your home. Gathering like pieces, scale, finish, material, the power of contrast. But, often times we have trouble editing. It is just as important to say when enough is enough. Bounty is not the same as excess. That does not mean ridding yourself of precious items and the memories they hold, what I want for you and for all of my clients to love how they live and what they live with. To revel in the reminders of your life’s journeys.

As I am often known to say, “it is not about how much stuff you have but, what meaning it holds for you and you alone.” Good taste is all relative, it remains in the eye of the beholder and since styles change, so do our ideas of what is beautiful. So, how do you create a life and a home that feels honest, personalized and timeless? Indeed, is there such a thing as timeless when it comes to style or styling? The answer is yes…because just as good taste is all relative, so is style.

Creating a timeless style is the same as creating a personal style. We evolve and so does our style but, that does not mean leaving everything behind. The background of your home is what can change, update and edit. The soul of your home is the constant in the equation. The reasoning behind your choices tell a deeper story of you and that story is every changing. Gathering the things of a lifetime and feeling their presence around you, while not suffocating you is how you edit the ongoing tale of who you are. In other words, your choices are who you are and your home is the reflection of those choices.

It may all sound just a bit too ethereal, but the way we live reveals a lot about who we are to those we allow into our homes. Yet, it is still is not about what others will think when allowed into your private space. What matters is what you think and how you feel. Pride in one’s home is not the same as vanity no, it is the desire to share the things that have meaning to you with the people who mean most to you.

We all love seeing those magazine spreads and TV programs that take us inside the homes of the rich and famous. But, what you probably don’t know, is that many of those homes are not where those people actually live. Often times, they are carefully choreographed and curated versions of a life they to project. They are created to impress the viewer. They are still telling a story, it just may not be the most authentic one. What that can teach you is how what you present to world in the way you live, is enduring. People don’t forget something/someone/somewhere beautiful. The beauty is not just in the splendor but also in the meaningfulness of the choices.

Over the years I have shared with you my experiences and many thoughts and tips as to how one creates a beautiful home. Travel, tour, collect, gather, embrace, display, share, and the greatest of these, is to share. What good are beautiful things that are never shared? If a piece is not seen, if no one knows it story, how does it become lasting? A perfect example of lasting are antique mirrors. They are a particularly coveted item to me when searching for specialty pieces for my clients. The mirrors with their original glass are the most precious of all. What fills me with wonder is the idea of how much they must have reflected in their time. The lives of their owners, joys and sorrows, reflecting all of life, a mirror, especially

an antique one, holds its secrets. It doesn’t betray the beholder, it quietly asks for more. When an antique mirror travels on to its next home, it collects more memories and retains them all.

My wish for you is a life filled with beauty, adventure and style. To live authentically is to be honest, first with yourself and then with those around you. it can often be easier to let our homes tell a portion of that story, than to verbalize it all ourselves. Let the things you live with be personal and meaningful and they will always be timeless, stylish and beautiful. Travel does not have to mean going farther than you have before or could imagine. Travel can be as

immersive as your imagination. Be brave, make your home a true reflection of who you are, who you have been and who you wish to become. It is never about the monetary value of those things, it is always about the significance they hold for you.

THE UPROARIOUS JASON T. GAFFNEY

Jason T. Gaffney has something in common with Vivica A. Fox and John C. Reilly. All were required by SAG to add middle initials to their names to distinguish themselves from other actors. “When I joined the actors’ union, I learned there already was another Jason Gaffney and that I needed a name that was one of a kind,” he explains. “I didn’t want to lose my actual name, so I decided to add my middle initial. That way I could still be me, but with a little extra flair!”

He demonstrates that flair in Marriage of Inconvenience, his new romantic comedy series launching this month on the gay streaming network, Dekkoo. Jason stars as Owen, a messy, street-smart dropout with anger issues who enters a witness protection program

and is forced to live in a very small house with a man he can’t stand.

Their arguments are hilarious! And watching the guys slowly fall for each other while other people are hunting them down makes for some compelling television.

How did you first get into acting?

Jason T. Gaffney: I got into acting as a kid. At 6, I made my theatre debut as the tiniest orphan and member of Fagan’s gang in Oliver. I was hooked and knew I was destined for Broadway! But as I grew older, I learned that I fit in better with the film crowd.

Q&A

Looking at your IMDb, many of your projects fall in the gay romantic comedy genre.

JTG: I’m a hopeless romantic! I love romantic comedies for many reasons. One, love is not a finite resource. There is an endless supply of it, which allows for endless love stories to be told. Two, rom coms usually have a happily ever after, so I know that I’m going to be satisfied with the ending. And three, they tend to be gentle and filled with laughter—in this current world we need a ton of that!

How did you find your niche in gay film?

JTG: I had watched a bunch of gay films and the vast majority were either coming out stories or films which relied on stereotypes. I wanted to watch a film where our sexuality wasn’t debated but celebrated. Around 2010, I had an idea for feature film, The Perfect Wedding, which I wrote with my dad.

You wrote Marriage of Inconvenience with your dad, too!

JTG: I love getting to work with my dad. After The Perfect Wedding, we co-wrote Analysis Paralysis together, as well as a trilogy of gay romance novels! It’s always so much fun when we write together. Our process is simple. We outline the story, then I write the first episode and send Dad the pages for the first round of revisions. As he’s revising and polishing, I’m working on episode two. As I’m finishing up the second episode, he’ll give me back the first one to read, and then I give him the second. We repeat this, over and over, until the episode is polished.

What episode of Marriage of Inconvenience are you particularly proud of?

What was the most difficult scene to film?

JTG: Where David (the actor who plays Franklin) had to cry. David is also one of my best friends in real life and even though I knew logically that he was performing, it’s always a bit stressful to watch him cry.

Did you really film the series from your home?

JTG: We did! And it was intense! Living on a set is definitely not for the faint of heart. We were supposed to film Marriage of Inconvenience back in March of 2020, however, the pandemic shut

us down before we began. The thing is, I had already decorated the house for filming. So, for two years, while we were in wait-mode, my house was decorated to fit the series. That was a long time to live with those pink curtains!

Is the bed that Owen shares with Franklin In Marriage of Inconvenience the same bed that you share with your real-life husband?

JTG: Thankfully no! Matt, my husband, is so incredible but neither of us wanted me filming any bed scenes in our actual bed. We put our actual bed into storage for filming and used our guest room bed for the series.

You must be excited for the series to launch!

JTG: So excited! I’m very proud of the work the cast and crew did to bring this story to life. Now, we just need people to watch it! I’m really confident that as people watch Marriage of Inconvenience, they’ll tell their friends to check it out.

Is this your first time working with the gay streaming service, Dekkoo?

JTG: Dekkoo licensed the rights to my last feature film, Analysis Paralysis. Their subscribers responded so well, the team at Dekkoo

asked if I would consider dipping my toes into a series. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity! This is my first partnered project with Dekkoo, and I’m thrilled with how awesome it has been.

Is it an exciting time in streaming or is the TV industry as cutthroat as ever?

JTG: Both! It’s a very exciting time because there are more streaming platforms than ever and tons of niche platforms, which is super great if you’re creating content for a group such as the LGBTQ community. That being said, it’s also cutthroat because with all the platforms out there, we must work even harder to stand out.

What do you hope viewers take away from the first season of Marriage of Inconvenience?

JTG: I hope the show makes people laugh. I also hope it inspires viewers to be open to reconsideration. Owen and Franklin are thrown into what they think is a terrible situation, but in fact they are given a once in a lifetime opportunity at real happiness. They just need to keep an open mind. I think many of us can benefit from an open mind.

PALMS SPRINGS PLAZA THEATRE: ROAD TO PRESERVATION

The Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation announced that the full restoration and renovation plans for the iconic Plaza Theatre were submitted to the Historic Site Preservation Board (HSPB) of the City of Palm Springs in March 2023 which approved the plans. The detailed plans were created by Architectural Resources Group (ARG), the architectural firm selected by the Foundation and the City of Palm Springs. ARG has a philosophy and appreciation for the past and an eye toward the future and was one of the first preservation design firms to have an in-house conservation laboratory and to integrate architectural conservation into the practice of historic preservation.

HSPB is a Palm Springs City Council appointed board that

identifies, nominates, and recommends potential historic sites and districts and helps maintain the City’s rich cultural and architectural heritage. HSPB will now review ARG’s plans prior to submitting its recommendations to the Palm Springs City Council. Once the Plaza Theatre plans are approved by the HSPB, the City may select a contractor to work on the renovation project, projected to start in early summer, 2023. The renovation/restoration plans will allow the Plaza Theatre to better serve the community by increasing its ability to host many kinds of events/productions. After it is updated and restored, the Plaza Theatre will provide an exciting venue in downtown Palm Springs for live performances, film premieres, community and educational events, films, and much more.

In addition, the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation announced that it will hold free Open House events at the theatre to display plans and renderings of the renovations to the historic building. These events will take place every Tuesday from 7 – 8 pm through June 6 at the Theatre, located at 128 S. Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. Foundation board members and other volunteers will greet attendees and answer questions about the project. The purpose of these free weekly events is to provide attendees with an opportunity to see firsthand the restoration plans for the iconic building as it enters its Next Act. Reservations are not necessary, and the events are free and open to the public.

The renovation of the Plaza Theatre will provide needed updates to the building’s infrastructure and modernize it to meet current health and safety standards while staying true to its celebrated historic past. The theatre’s original exterior appearance will be maintained but new glass doors will be placed in the existing arches. This will substantially enlarge the lobby by incorporating the area currently under cover but currently outside of the main doors. By enclosing this space, the stairs to the balcony will finally be enclosed and air conditioned. A new fully integrated sound system will be installed to bring life to live performances and reduce costs of renting sound equipment for events. The building’s HVAC system will be replaced with a new system that is energy-efficient and quieter than the existing system. Lighting fixtures will be restored or recreated from the original 1930s plans to provide better illumination. The apron (or ‘thrust’) of the stage will be expanded to provide a bigger performance area. To bring the theatre up to current standards, the dressing rooms will be renovated with improved restrooms and related facilities. A reconfigured floor plan will ensure every seat in the house has optimal sight lines, adding more wheelchair accessible seating, and an ADA compliant dressing room and restroom will be added adjacent to the stage.

The Plaza Theatre is an excellent example of the “atmospheric style” of design that was popular in the late 1920s and early 30s

when the theatre was originally constructed. Atmospheric theatres were designed and decorated to evoke the feeling of being outdoors through the use of projectors, architectural elements, and ornamentation. The Plaza Theatre’s original auditorium design resembled a Spanish courtyard under a nighttime sky. In preparation of the restoration, paint samples were taken and examined to determine the theatre’s original color palate, and the original blueprints and historic photos were consulted to confirm which elements were original and which had been added over the years. The new plan includes restoration of the atmospheric walls and proscenium arch, reinstalling new ceiling “star field” lights, installing new seats, and adding new carpet in the aisles and lobby.

J.R. Roberts, President of the Foundation said: “This is a major milestone on our way to completing this project. We are working with experts to uncover the theatre’s original color palate and materials, and this has guided our design process. In addition to restoring the building, we’re delivering on the promise to increase accessibility and balance historic preservation with state-of-the-art technology. I am confident that the completed Plaza Theatre will be spectacular in every way.”

Construction is anticipated to begin in the first half of 2023. It is projected that the work will take approximately one year to complete, allowing the Plaza Theatre to open in the summer of 2024.

The Plaza Theater Foundation has raised $13.5M towards their goal of $16M. They have launched the “Last Act” fundraising campaign to raise the remaining funds by this summer. There are many ways in which the public may play a significant role in the Plaza Theatre restoration, including becoming a Founder, securing a Naming Opportunity for seats or other areas of the building, or making a general donation. DISHING WITH TAN MOM AND ADAM BARTA THE DUO DISCUSS THEIR NEW SHOW, #THEDISH

#THEDISH is a new reality show on Tubi TV that stars Adam Barta and Tan Mom, along with Here Comes Honey Boo Boo’s “Mama June” Shannon, YouTube sensation Cynthia Beaumont and a gaggle of RuPaul’s Drag Race drag queens. As anyone might guess, the series is gimmicky, overly dramatic and wildly absurd – and intentionally so.

“Like all reality shows, we blur the line between fact and fiction,” Adam Barta explains. “But what makes #THEDISH different is that we tip in the audience when we do.”

The show was inspired by Barta’s own botched pursuit at reality stardom. He proudly admits that he has been trying to land his own show for ten years. It’s why he got plastic surgery on Dr. Miami and danced drunk with Teresa Giudice on The Real Housewives of New Jersey. He sees #THEDISH as his chance for global stardom,

however, his thirsty friends, including Tan Mom, do too; and they’re literally willing to fight him for the spotlight.

We spoke with Adam Barta and Tan Mom from their homes in Central Florida.

How did you two meet?

Tan Mom: We met at a restaurant in Patterson, NJ, after Adam’s first viral hit song with Octomom. At the time, I was partying a lot. I thought Adam was so cute and I didn’t know that he was gay! I went to kiss his neck and he was like, umm, what the f- is she doing? The rest is history.

Adam Barta: It was clear that Patricia and I had great chemistry together, just not in that way. Our comedy styles are similar. We

both love satire and parody mixed with a dash of cringe. Patricia as Tan Mom has become something of a muse for me.

Is that why you wanted her to part of #THEDISH?

Adam Barta: Definitely. Patricia has the “IT” factor for TV. And in real life, she is fascinating. She is sweet and caring. We both suffer with crippling anxiety. When you see Patricia doing all the crazy antics on TV, it’s not so much her being nutty, it’s her anxiety showing itself. What I love about Patricia is that she embraces her wackiness and allows it to shine on camera, which is why she’s still relevant and being talked about on shows like Drag Race ten years later!

What were your thoughts on being parodied on this season’s Drag Race?

Tan Mom: I was ecstatic! I love the drag queens and all their fashions. Amethyst was so great, but my favorite was Loosey Laduca as Joan Rivers. I loved Joan. She read me to filth at Howard Stern’s sixtieth birthday party.

Adam Barta: I’m a little disappointed Amethyst hasn’t responded to us online. We’ve tried to connect, but with no luck.

Maybe she feels bad about making fun of Patricia? Hopefully this can let her know that Tan Mom approves. We would love to have her on the next season of #THEDISH. Also, Marcia, Marcia, Marcia ‘cause we love her, love her, love her.

Patricia, you do not have the same love for your co-star on #THEDISH, the rich widow Cynthia Beaumont. Why?

Tan Mom: All I have to say about Cynthia is that the chick has no talent whatsoever. She pretends that she’s rich and she’s not. Also, her screechy voice makes me nauseous. I gave her a shot at friendship and she f’d it up. If I could, I would happily push her into a pool, housewife Boca Raton style!

Adam Barta: As a producer on #THEDISH, Patricia’s hatred of Cynthia Beaumont is a dream come true as it makes for great TV. As a close friend to both, it’s disconcerting. I think they clash simply because they are both from New Jersey and they have Jerseysized personalities. One thing we get a glimpse at in this season of #THEDISH is how much of a diva Patricia can really be.

What are your feelings for the rest of the cast on #THEDISH?

Tan Mom: They are all wonderful. I love the drag queens, especially Tammie Brown who is hilarious. I think Mama June is a nice person. Do I consider her an actress? Not at all. She is about as good an actress as I am a singer.

Tan Mom gets into a spat with Mama June in the show. What’s that about?

Adam Barta: That fight was kind of my fault. We had Debbie Gibson booked as a special guest on #THEDISH, and Mama June is a huge fan and wanted to be the one to announce Debbie on the show. At the time, Patricia was co-host on #THEDISH and it was really her job to introduce the guest. I completely forgot to let Patricia know that I

had promised June she could do it so when June started, Patricia was not having it and she began yelling like a banshee. I cut Patricia’s live feed which made her even more angry. It became a comedy of errors.

How much of what we see on #THEDISH is real?

Adam Barta: The thing with #THEDISH is, it is in essence a reality show, so about 90% of what you see did happen. Tan Mom’s fights with Cynthia, arguing with June on the Debbie Gibson special and missing the photoshoot are all 100% real.

Oh yes, the photoshoot. Patricia, why were you so late for your photoshoot?

Tan Mom: I had just got out of the hospital, and I was very sick from the anesthesia. Everyone thinks you recover quickly from anesthesia, but as you get older, the body becomes less tolerant to it. I was so sick, but we had planned the shoot for over a week with the crew, so we couldn’t cancel.

Adam Barta: In all honesty, and Patricia is probably just learning this now, we could have rescheduled the shoot. What we do with #THEDISH is we take relatively mundane dramas and elevate them. It’s like when you are watching the Housewives and they’re flipping tables. That stuff wouldn’t happen naturally. The producers are in the background riling up the cast. Tan Mom, sick as a dog, was a great opportunity to film some fun footage.

Can you forgive Adam?

Tan Mom: Oh, yes. I’ve known Adam for over ten years. I’ve seen him grow as an actor and singer and now as a producer, and what I love is that Adam doesn’t take sh-t from anyone anymore. It took a long time for him to get this spot and I couldn’t be prouder of him. Adam is family.

And on each of those occasions, locals, snowbirds, and even tourists have swelled with pride and come out with a vengeance to raise much-needed funds while enjoying the generosity of participating local restaurants, bars, and bakeries that donate anywhere from 30 to 110% of their entire day and evening’s receipts — not just profits — to the popular effort. This year, the philanthropic food fest benefitting DAP Health’s HIV/AIDS programs and services takes place on April 27.

For the uninitiated, DOFL is a massively popular North American event where, coast to coast each year, per the charity’s website, “more than 50 local HIV service organizations partner with 2,400+ participating restaurants, 4,100+ volunteers, and 300,000+ diners to raise over $4.5 million for people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States and Canada. The best part? All funds raised through a city’s Dining Out For Life event stay in that city to provide help and hope to people living with or impacted by HIV/AIDS.”

Locally last year, 68 desert eateries participated to raise over $209,000. That’s more than San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and most other large urban centers. In fact, truth be told, the desert — with its Indio-Cathedral City-Palm Springs 2022 metro population of 487,000 — came in second only to Denver, whose current population is almost 3 million!

DAP Health wants to throw out a challenge to its beloved desert community. Can we band together to beat the Mile-High City and

all others and come out on top in 2023? Surely, we can! Here’s all it would take:

Every person who has ever participated in DOFL Greater Palm Springs in the past does so again — and spreads the word to friends and family who are newcomers to the event. But instead of just picking between breakfast, lunch, and dinner, everybody dines out for life at all three meals, plus snacks and happy hour here and there, on April 27. ART IN THE PARK IN THE DARK

LASERS AND FLAGGERS AND BIKES, OH MY!

The first-ever Art in the Park in the Dark will take place from 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, April 15, at Demuth Park, on Mesquite Avenue between the Pickleball courts and the playground.

The event is part of World Art Day, in honor of Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday. Art in the Park in the Dark is the 6-10 p.m. portion of the World Art Day Festival, taking place at Demuth Park with lots of hands-on arts activities from 3 to 6 p.m., produced by the City of Palm Springs Parks and Recreation Department. The evening portion will be filled with lasers, lighted bikes, flaggers, interactive glow art and live painting. It is also very hands-on.

“This started a few months ago when I applied for the Art Is Everywhere Neighborhood Grant from the PS Arts Commission to get some picnic tables painted in my park,” said Shann Carr, who is producing Art in the Park in the Dark, with support from the City of Palm Springs. “When I got the grant, I wanted to make a fuss about revealing the artists’ painted tables by making a gallery reveal in the park, at night, staged artistically with my solar gadgets! Now artists and neighbors keep tossing their hat into the ring to participate by looking at the art they already do and bringing in light, black light and glow. Fun!”

The entire day of events is FREE and appropriate for all ages.

ART IN THE PARK IN THE DARK ACTIVITIES FROM 6 TO 10 P.M. WILL INCLUDE:

LASER WONDERLAND - Throughout the darkest hours, world renowned Laseronics artist, Kyle Garner will project a series of intimate laser shows that will spark the night with excitement.

LIGHTED BIKE PARADE AND CONTEST - All ages are invited to join an illuminated bike-parade through the park and get a little help lighting their bikes at a “Maker Booth” hosted by valley cyclists.

NIGHT GALLERY ART WALK - The park’s permanent art works, the freshly painted tables and benches, local artists’ pop-up booths, light installations, creatively solar-lit booths, vendors and live performances by flaggers spinning UV reactive fabrics will make up the Night Gallery Art Walk.

BE THE LIGHT - The events are at the remarkably dark end of the park between the pickleball courts and the playground, so we beckon guests to bring a blacklight flashlight for maximum fun and to see all the UV art. Wear a black or white T-shirt and become a walking canvas for artistic creations.

LIGHT INSTALLATIONS - Artists, groups, neighbors and galleries are invited to make light-based, temporary installations to add to the fun. Volunteers will help you hang your light art gently on the limbs of the trees around the grounds as long as you do no damage.

SEE IN THE DARK - 300 attendees will get a free, small, blacklight flashlight to see all the hidden treasures of art and nature nestled in the park. Flashlights of all kinds are encouraged.

ALL DAY TUNES - DJ Galaxy will thread the daytime and night events together with feel-good music from 3-10 p.m. as community groups fill the day stage with live performances. After all the music, the soundtrack of the night’s closing laser show will be a beautiful, crystal bowls sound bath!

The first sponsors to jump-up to support the event are Hot Purple Energy, Renova and the Coachella Valley Independent, bringing together the art and solar themes of the event perfectly. April 15th also happens to be the day that Californians buying solar, will step into the “Net Metering 3” arrangement with the utility companies.

“I’m a fanatic for solar lights. I live right by the airport, and I sometimes worry a plane might mistake my back yard as the landing strip,“ said Carr.

LEVI KREIS AT THE PALM SPRINGS CULTURAL CENTER

The new Sand, Stars and Guitars Concert Series continues in April with Tony® award winning actor and singer/songwriter Levi Kreis. The series, which is presented by the Palm Springs Cultural Center and the Bluegrass Standard Magazine, began last month with the classic Bluegrass band Special Consensus. Now it takes a turn towards country music and the American theatre with Kreis.

Levi Kreis, who was a prodigy piano player, classical composer and singer/songwriter, aspired to sing gospel music, right up until he was outed as a gay man. That event, which had to have been devastating at the time, changed his life for the better, because he decided on an impulse to attend an open call audition for Rent - no headshot, no resume – and ended up being cast as Roger in the Broadway national tour.

Today, Levi Kreis is an out gay man. He is also an award-winning musician with ten albums. His credits also include Broadway (Rent, Hadestown, Million Dollar Quartet) as well as film (Don’t Let Go, A Very Sordid Wedding, The Divide). His music is featured on television (The Vampire Diaries, Sons Of Anarchy, So You Think You Can Dance).

“We are thrilled to have Levi Kreis join us for the Sand, Stars and Guitars Concert Series,” said Michael C. Green, Executive Director of the Palm Springs Cultural Center. “His music is already well-known to many people in Palm Springs, so he was really a natural addition to the series.”

HAPPY SPRING HOLIDAY AND TAX SEASON!

I hope you all have survived the heavy rains that have steadily fallen upon us over the last month. It’s been wet and wild, but not my kind of wild! Let’s hope that this month of April will not bring more showers or else we will be living in a Petri dish of allergens! Ah-Choo!

Last month I wrote a post on Facebook that to date has had the largest number of responses other than my birthday where I am blessed to receive over 1000 wishes, much to my utter delight. Over 500 of you from the Palm Springs area commented on what was meant to be a post about surviving COVID but turned into a commentary about the prices of things in our good city.

I am that kind of writer. I begin with a thought and let it flow into a stream that oftentimes is very different than my initial intent. That is what happened with my post. I was expressing my dismay over the price gouging in restaurants taking into consideration the fact that all items in our world cost more today. But my real concern is how much have the cost of things gone up versus the inflated prices that we are being charged.

There are still restaurants that are charging realistic prices that reflect the cost hike whereas other places have raised their prices so high that it is reprehensible to the point of disgusting.

I am not going to name names because that is not acceptable especially on this platform, but I am certain we all know the biggest offenders. It sickens me to think that some Palm Springs businesses are only interested in catering to clientele who are coming from big cities and are used to paying absurd prices for drinks, appetizers, valet parking, clothing, etc. and don’t think twice about the local town person who most likely works and lives in Palm Springs and makes a decent wage but is not a fat cat.

I value what I do, and I believe that I am very good at what I do. There is no way that I can charge the same price for personal training that I would be forced to if I lived in Los Angeles. I have always charged my clients a fair price and offered my undivided attention for a full 60 minutes. I came here in 2007 after being a personal trainer in Santa Fe, New Mexico and charged the same prices here that I did there, that is up until the crash of 2008 when I had to make the decision to lower my price or fear losing all my clientele.

The sad thing about lowering one’s prices is that when you try to raise them back people suddenly feel incensed and lose the priority of health over money. Some of my clients had no problem with it whereas others chose that time to leave. No love lost of course but I still need to pay my bills.

My ex used to accuse me of not knowing my value and kept encouraging me to raise my fee, but I really didn’t agree with him. I am not into price gouging, so I kept my prices consistent for over 10 years, never giving myself a raise even though my costs at the gym were going up. I’ve always been a saver and have never accrued big bills other than a mortgage. I was blessed that my parents left me money and got a lump sum in 2015 as well as a divorce settlement that allowed me to save even more. Again, I chose not to raise my rates that is until I realized that I was losing money or breaking even and not really saving so in the recent past I have raised my fees a bit.

But that is not the whole point of this. I am really reaching out to the businesses in our town and asking them to remember who paid their mortgages and rents over the last 25+ years prior to COVID and the huge influx of “newbies” who found our town and the freedom it represented during our sheltering in.

Many have moved here permanently and can afford and will pay extravagant prices for food and entertainment. Then there are those of us who work in Palm Springs who make reasonable salaries but yet have friends who visit, who are on vacation and can afford to pay vacation

prices. I suggested in my post that perhaps the business owners might do what the owners in Spain do for the “pilgrims” walking the Camino de Santiago. They have a special price for those of us who walked the path. It’s the equivalent of a local’s discount allowing the worker bees to frequent the restaurants that our visitors want to enjoy without breaking our wallets. I know that there are a few places in town who do offer this discount and I will make sure to support them as a way to thank them for their sensitivity to our plight. I’d love it if more places offered the same because I don’t know about you, but my friends love to visit Palm Springs and I will be asked to join them at many restaurants all year long. I would hate to have to decline because I felt that the costs were too exorbitant for my pocketbook or join them and order a house salad which in many establishments now costs up to $17!!!!!

Here is my fear, once prices go up, they are not going to come down, are they? Unlike the price of gas whose prices fluctuate not only by state but by city tax, what will it take for food prices to come down? More rain, for more crop growth or too much rain for spoiled fields? Look at what’s happening with eggs? Will an omelet now cost $20? When is it going to end?

Honestly, food prices will never again go down, so we are stuck

with the prices in the grocery stores and the restaurants and that really has me concerned. What can we do? Is It time for a civil uprising? What choices do we have? Do we boycott? Will it make a difference? So many questions and so few answers.

And please don’t get me started on the cost of travel! The airlines and their prices are outrageous and I for one have reduced my travel the last two years to destinations in North America, and that still costs an arm and a leg. I feel fortunate that I can travel and grateful that I took the trips that I did the last 10 years because I am not certain I will be able to continue that pathway unless something radically changes.

As for tax season, I hope you are all due a refund and that it will allow you to enjoy both affordable groceries, meals out and some travel!

Experimental pop artist Shygirl announces a deluxe edition of her critically acclaimed debut album Nymph, titled Nymph_o, due April 14th. THE GARBOLOGISTS WRAPS UP 15TH SEASON FOR DEZART PERFORMS

Lindsay Joelle’s “finely crafted play, laced with wit and wisdom” (Broadway World) The Garbologists rounds out the 15th Season for Dezart Performs (www.dezartperforms.org) April 14 – 23. As the lives of a white conservative and a Black liberal working together in a New York City garbage truck become more entwined, they discover some things are easier to toss than others. It is a play that is a hopeful story about finding common ground in uncommon times.

“As the old adage goes, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure,” said Dezart Performs founding artistic director Michael Shaw who is directing the play. “Lindsay Joelle’s beautifully written and perfectly pitched dialogue is itself something to be treasured. In a world of great economic and social disparity, Danny and Marlowe show us the true meaning of friendship and that our ‘jobs’ are not always a reflection of our rich inner lives.”

Danny (Jacob Alden Roa), a nine-year veteran of DSNY (The City of New York Department of Sanitation) is matched with Marlowe (Nathalie Bennett) on her first day as a garbage collector. Danny is world weary, gruff and more than a little politically incorrect with a degree from the school of hard knocks. Marlowe is a Columbia graduate who did her “Master’s Thesis on the proliferation of AngloIndian intaglio travel printmaking as a byproduct of 19th century

colonialism.” The chances of a friendship, or even a chance meeting, at a Manhattan bar would be unlikely. Daily intimate conversations over rancid trash bags during a NYC winter even more so between two such radically different people. Both Danny and Marlowe have secrets. Both have things in their lives they wish they could have kept, and both have thrown much away. The result is a moving and memorable “buddy play” that will stay with the audience for a long time.
