One may define art as the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance. We have gathered a small group of artists who have expressed their own definition of what art means to them; what inspires them, what projects they currently are working on, and their future plans. As you discover these artists, you will see how they interpret their expression of art.

BRET PALAZZO

Bret Palazzo has been an accomplished artist for the past 30 years.

Bret began his career doing character and design work for Disney, Warner Bros, Universal Studios among many others. His love of mid-century art and design was a strong element in most of his work for those 2 decades.

In recent years Bret has ventured out to perfect his own successful painting and print career inspired by the lively culture and lifestyle of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s that he grew up with. Having had the love of the late mid-century culture and art his whole life, Bret prides himself on creating artwork that looks like it could have been made in those decades’ past. Whenever possible he uses vintage, restored frames to add to the whole authentic retro vibe.

Bret and his husband Donne feel fortunate to be part of the Palm Springs and Portland Oregon communities. Living in these two beautiful parts of the world has inspired Bret to create artwork that can enhance any stylish space with a cool vibe that makes others know how much you love where you live. Bret hopes you enjoy his art as much as he enjoys creating.

FREE RAMOS

Free Ramos, a Hong Kong born Filipino, moved to Los Angeles when he was 16 years old. He has been creating art since he was old enough to hold a pencil, but aside from his high school art teachers, Free has mostly been self-taught.

Involving elements of fashion, fantasy & fun, Free’s artistic vision is expressed through mixed media in a signature style he calls “The Glamour & The Whimsy.” Informed by Erté, Disney & comic book art, he creates “Art from the Heart” which he hopes moves, touches, inspires & encourages all who experience it.

Continuing to expand his artistic repertoire, Free has explored different media, from chalk & pencil to marker & ink and now, in digital media, Free is currently working on interpreting pop culture characters through his own designs in the Japanese kawaii & chibi styles, as well as creating new original characters reviving his LoverBear line of clothing and accessories.

Free presently resides in Pasadena, CA and is pursuing his BA in Illustration at the Academy of Art University.”

JAIME O’NEIL

I’ve been painting as long as I can remember. I was eight years old when my grandma finally allowed me to sit in on her art classes, so I started my art journey in grandma’s tole painting class, using oil paints. My grandma and I painted many weeks and months together; I keep those years close to my heart.

Through my education and careers, I continued to paint. Sometimes for pleasure, sometimes commission work. I began using acrylics, and painted on furniture, walls, wood, and textiles. I’ve painted on just about every surface that will take paint (and a few that didn’t). I’ve recently taken an interest in the medium of pastels.

I’ve had a few careers, all of which involved some sort of art - floral designer, graphic designer, editor. “Artist” is my superhero persona; “teacher” is my day job. For the past twenty years, I’ve been fortunate to teach video production to high school students. My classroom walls look more like a gallery than a classroom, and I tend to attract many artists as students.

I’ve tried to keep up with the online world and have a website where my paintings are available as original work or prints, www. goddessknowsart.com. I started the site during the pandemic, when I had time to paint and was cranking out three paintings a week! I take online and in person classes and workshops and am always striving to learn new techniques. This is evident in my body of work, which is broad in subject, while portraiture is my favorite.

I’m currently juggling being a full-time teacher, artist and entrepreneur in the wide world of art, but mostly painting for the fun and joy of it.

JOE DIETL

Joe Dietl was a successful working actor in Hollywood for 25 years, mainly as a commercial actor who appeared in over 50 network spots. He also did guest spots on sitcoms like “Two and a Half Men” and “Mom” and indie features alongside David Schwimmer, Mike Meyers, Jennifer Aniston and others. He and his husband now reside in Palm Springs and create art at his newly expanded gallery on Sunny Dunes Rd., just south of the airport.

His newest series is a Pop-Art inspired set of serigraphs featuring “Robo-Bears.” What are “Robo-Bears” you ask? They were originally ceramic sculptures that Joe, the artist, created by hand from clay at his studio. He has now transformed one of his ceramic “Robo-Bears,” “Max,” into a series of Pop-Art Paintings that will be featured in his gallery beginning Thursday March 28th at the Opening Reception from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm - Dietlart Gallery - 4629 Sunny Dunes Rd. Palm Springs, CA 92264.

Each “Max” “Robo-Bear” is unique and one of a kind, while still being very affordable. Joe’s goal with this show is to make art that anyone can afford, so that fans of his work from any economic background would be able to own an original piece of his art. He was inspired by Andy Warhol’s serigraphs, where each one is a little different, with small imperfections adding to the uniqueness of each piece.

MAYA KALABIC

Maya Kalabic was born in Yugoslavia. After landing in Chicago, Maya immersed herself and took full advantage of the possibilities she found—after graduating High School she attended The Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago and graduated with a BA in Fine Arts with a major in multimedia. Soon after receiving her degree, and drawn to the warmth and allure of the desert, Maya relocated to the Sonora desert where she resided and worked in Palm Springs Ca. She moved back to Chicago a few years ago.

Maya’s unique life experiences inspire and influence her work in many layered ways. Her fond childhood memories of the scenery, symbolism and her innocence as a young child in Yugoslavia; her experiences as a foreigner in a strange land; the rich urban culture of Chicago; and the influence of desert life, in all of its infinite textures and color, are all present in her work.

On the surface, Maya’s work is graphic, easy and effortless. Upon further contemplation her work is almost secretly layered and pushes the viewer to explore the deep emotional response it evokes. Her medium is most often acrylic on canvas but also includes acrylic on wood, clay figurines, animation and digital illustration.

Maja has exhibited her work in several galleries in Chicago area and Southern California (Los Angeles, Sand Diego, Palm Springs and high desert). RICHARD PRESCOTT

Palm Springs artist Richard Prescott curates a vibrant collection of his Mid-Century inspired contemporary art at Mod City Gallery. SHAG (JOSH AGLE)

Josh Agle, also known as Shag (a contraction of the last two letters of his first name and the first two letters of his last name) is a painter, illustrator and designer based in Southern California. Since 1997 Shag has had numerous gallery exhibitions in the United States, Europe, Japan and Australia.

While Shag’s work might easily be dismissed as retro-kitsch, the influential New York Times art critic Roberta Smith has called his painting catchy and witty, saying “the eye is snared by Mr. Agle’s economic use of saturated colors -- sharp greens and warm lavenders, smoldering reds, sour ochres -- and the tinted-gel space created by his thin-on-thin paint handling.” Interest by museum curators and academics has led to his work being featured in museums such as the L.A. County Museum of Art, The Andy Warhol Museum in Pennsylvania and the Naples Museum of Contemporary Art in Italy.

Shag’s distinctive imagery can be found on merchandise and products worldwide. He has created work for Coca Cola, Star Wars, Playboy and the city of Palm Springs. In 2005, he was chosen to be the official artist for the 50th anniversary of Disneyland.

BOOK REVIEW ALWAYS OVERBOOKED

It happened in a heartbeat.

A split-second, a half a breath, that’s all it took. It was so quick, so sharp-edged that you can almost draw a line between before and after, between then and now. Will anything ever be the same again? Perhaps, but maybe not. As in the new book “Unswerving” by Barbara Ridley, things change, and so might you.

She could remember lines, hypnotizing yellow ones spaced on a road, and her partner, Les, asleep in the seat beside her. It was all so hazy. Everything Tave Greenwich could recall before she woke up in a hospital bed felt like a dream.

It was as though she’d lost a month of her life.

“Life,” if you even wanted to call it that – which she didn’t. Tave’s hands resembled claws bent at the wrist. Before the accident, she was a talented softball catcher but now she could barely get her arms to raise above her shoulders. She could hear her stomach gurgle, but she couldn’t feel it. Paralyzed from the chest down, Tave had to have help with even the most basic care.

She was told that she could learn some skills again if she worked hard. She was told that she’d leave rehab someday soon. What nobody told her was how Les, Leslie, her partner, girlfriend, love, was doing after the accident.

Physical therapist Beth Farringdon was reminded time and again not to get overinvolved with her patients, but she saw something in Tave that she couldn’t ignore. Beth was on the board of directors of a group that sponsored sporting events for disabled athletes, she knew people who could serve as role models for Tave, and she knew that all this could ease Tave’s adjustment into her new life. It was probably not entirely in her job description, but Beth couldn’t stop thinking of ways to help Tave who, at twenty-three, was practically a baby.

She could, for instance, take Tave on outings or help find Les –even though it made Beth’s own girlfriend, Katy, jealous...

So, here’s a little something to know before you start reading “Unswerving”: author Barbara Ridley is a former nurse-practitioner who used to care for patients with spinal cord injuries. That should give readers a comfortable sense of satisfaction, knowing that her experiences give this novel an authentic vibe that feels right and rings true, no faking.

But that’s not the only appeal of this book: while there are a few minor things that might have readers shaking their heads (HIPAA, anyone?), Ridley’s characters are mostly lifelike and mostly likable.

Even the nasties are well-done and the mysterious character that’s there-not-there boosts the appeal. Put everyone together, twist a little bit to the left, give them some plotlines that can’t ruined by early guessing, and you’ve got a quick-read novel that you can enjoy and feel good about sharing.

And share you will because this is a book that may also open a few eyes and make readers think. Start “Unswerving” and you’ll (heart) it.

JustFor.fans (JFF) lays bare the highs, lows and true-life tales of independent adult content creators with the release of Men at Work: Selling Sex Online, a revealing new documentary from Border2Border Entertainment.

Written and directed by Charlie David, the provocative 50-minute feature delves into the phenomenon of adult entertainers creating, shooting and starring in their own productions, with popular and far-reaching platforms such as JustFor.fans acting as de facto film distributors that monetize these productions directly through their sites.

In his New York City apartment, Michael throws a birthday party for Harold, a self-avowed “thirty-two-year-old, pockmarked, Jew fairy,” complete with a surprise gift: “Cowboy,” a street hustler. As the evening wears on, bitter, unresolved resentments among the guests come to light when a game of “Truth” goes terribly wrong.

Palm Canyon Theatre’s production of this “screamingly funny,” groundbreaking play, The Boys in the Band, showcases the tremendous talent of 9 local performers: Kam Sisco as Michael, Rob Kreisinger Denk as Harold, Sebastian Reda as Cowboy, Brent Anderson as Alan McCarthy, Ron Coronado as Donald, Dwayne Arvinger as Bernard, Larry Martin as Emory, Adam Hieter as Larry, and Luke Rainey as Hank. This transformative and illuminating work of art is rumored to have inspired the 1969 Stonewall riots and brings memories and deepseeded emotions to the surface leaving no audience member unmoved.

The Boys in the Band, which premiered Off-Broadway in 1968, was written by Mart Crowley who based the story largely on his own life. The play won the Obie Award for Distinguished Performance

by an Actor in 1968 and again for Distinguished Performance during its Off-Broadway revival run in 1997. The Boys in the Band took the Tony for Best Revival of a Play in 2018, when it came back to Broadway for its 50th anniversary. The script was adapted into two feature films in 1970 and 2020. The PCT production, with its memorable, sharp one-liners, is intricately directed by Eric SteinSteele. Set and lighting design by JW Layne and projections by Nick Edwards.

PLAZA THEATRE TO HOLD FUNDRAISING EVENT FEATURING EXCLUSIVE PRESCOTT CAR COLLECTION

The Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation announced that theatre supporters will have the opportunity to attend a fundraising event at an exclusive venue that houses more than 100 rare and vintage automobiles. Called ‘Drive the Plaza Theatre Into the Future,’ the event will offer participants the opportunity to enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and live musical entertainment while viewing an amazing vintage auto collection owned by collector Brad Prescott. The event takes place on Friday April 19 from 5-6 pm for the VIP admission and 6-8 pm for general admission. It will be held at The Prescott Collection Hangar in Palm Springs. Tickets are $100 for General Admission, $250 for VIP Admission (includes early exclusive tour of Brad Prescott’s favorite vehicles in his collection, preferred parking, and the option to apply $250 toward the naming of a seat in the theatre), and Grand Admission at $1,000 (includes the early exclusive tour of the collection with the owner, preferred parking, and the ability to fully secure the naming of a seat in the theatre).

They are housed in a series of specially constructed hangars in Palm Springs.

“We are thrilled that renowned car collector Brad Prescott will allow our theatre supporters to view his impressive auto collection at this unique fundraising event,” said Foundation Board member Kathy Weremiuk. “Event attendees will be able to view these rare and highly collectable vintage cars and can credit their donation to name a seat in the theatre. We look forward to providing this fun opportunity to our new and existing donors.”

The Foundation is continuing to raise funds to fully restore the Plaza Theatre, one of the most iconic venues in Palm Springs. The Foundation has already raised more than $15M but must raise at least $10M more to cover the construction costs and contingencies plus startup expenses. These needed funds will help restore the building to its original splendor and update it to meet the access, technology, and equity needs of today and tomorrow. It is projected

that the restoration work will take approximately eighteen months to complete, allowing the Plaza Theatre to open in 2025.

There are many ways in which the public may continue to play a significant role in the Plaza Theatre restoration, including becoming a Founder, securing a Naming Opportunity for seats or other areas of the building, or making a general donation.

Kristine W will be in Palm Springs April 25-28 for four shows with the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus! The performance will be part of “Defying Gravity”, the chorus’ annual spring concert, taking place at PS Art Museum Annenberg Theater.

Named by Billboard Magazine as the #8 Greatest Dance Artist of All Time and the #3 greatest from the Last Decade (trailing only Madonna and Beyoncé), Kristine W has proven herself a lasting talent. Through nearly twenty-five years in music, she has consistency delivered songs that touch hearts and souls and compel bodies to find the mighty groove out on the dance floor. She’s had 17 #1 singles - including “Feel What You Want”, “Land of the Living” and “Stars” - tying Mariah Carey for the sixth-most #1 dance hits on the Billboard charts. She is out now with her new single, “By Your Side”.

So how did a ranch-raised small-town girl from rural Washington State end up as “the most soulful vocalist in dance music? From almost the time she could walk, Kristine was singing in church, talent contests and local Oprys. She learned to play guitar and piano from her grandmother and would compete in local talent contests.

Ultimately Kristine won the biggest local competition, Miss Washington, and went on to compete for Miss America, winning the opening swimsuit and talent categories. The scholarship funds she earned enabled her to head out from Pasco to pursue her musical dreams.

“I took my scholarship money and headed to Las Vegas,” Kristine explains. “I figured I could work my way through college performing music. And I did.”

Record labels and production companies constantly courted Kristine with offers to sing every style of popular music imaginable, but she determined to produce dance music like her idol Donna Summer. “I love the energy of dance music, always have. It’s joyful and happy. To me dance music is like the energy of life.”

She took her voice and songs to Europe and recorded her first album in London. In 1996, “Feel What You Want,” Kristine’s debut single, made an immediate mark in the dance clubs, soaring to #1 here and abroad and becoming a dance floor classic. “One More Try” followed for another #1 dance hit, and a third chart-topper on the album’s title song, “Land of the Living,” secured Kristine’s place as a new dance floor star. When the album was officially released in 1997, Kristine’s in-store concert at the Virgin Megastore in NYC’s Times Square drew lines of adoring fans around the block.

She signed with RCA Records and followed with more #1 hits on her 2000 album, Stronger, including its title tune and “Lovin’ You.” Just as she was establishing her career, Kristine was diagnosed with a particularly aggressive strain of leukemia and given only a 30 percent chance of survival. She was given an experimental stem cell transplant and spent two years fighting the disease while also raising two infant children. Ironically, songs she had written before being struck by the disease like “Land of the Living” and “One More Try” proved almost prophetic as well as motivational as Kristine struggled to overcome the disease. “My music always seems to give

me the inspiration to keep fighting for it,” Kristine notes.

When Kristine returned with Fly Again on the indie dance label, Tommy Boy, in 2003, she racked up three more #1s: the title song, “Save My Soul” and “The Wonder of It All.” But it was her 2009 album The Power of Music, that really put Kristine on the dance map. It featured seven #1 tracks, proving Kristine’s enduring appeal as a major dance music artist.

Kristine’s next album is expected this summer.

“I love creating the work and seeing people’s reaction to it,” she says. “My voice is a gift and I’m thankful for it. It has made my life very interesting. I’ve gotten to make a difference and bring a lot of joy to the world, and that’s really what’s important.”

PERSPECTIVE MEDICAL CIRCUS

I hate what I’m about to go off on, but I feel so disgusted with our medical system that I can no longer remain silent. I think that many of you know that I was a nurse for 20 years. I loved my job until it became a business and no longer allowed me as a nurse to have direct patient care. I will leave it at that for the time being but knew that I could no longer care for people the way that I wanted to, so. I walked away from my profession to become a personal trainer.

Like so many, I suffered from not only depression and low-self esteem but also was totally imbalanced in both my female and male hormones. With the advent of menopause i was given the rare opportunity to right this lifelong problem and got on bio-identical hormones and watched my body, mind and spirit come into balance.

It took over 6 months of total dedication to find the right balance and over the years have had to go through adjustments to keep the balance in my body. It was decided that i would remain on Estradiol, the good estrogen, progesterone to protect my heart and bones, testosterone to not only ensure a sex drive but more importantly protect my female organs. Put those hormones together with the Armour thyroid which assists the type of deficit that I have and replaced the both missing thyroid hormone, I was able to reach homeostasis.

Everything was going along well until a few months ago when I shared that there was a nationwide shortage of the Estradiol patches with no recourse except a lame excuse from Big Pharma, which essentially said, “My bad!”

It took lots of phone calls to doctor’s, offices, pharmacies, the manufacturer and Medicare to finally get a positive response.

Medicare even allowed me to go back on my original patch which they had refused me over the last 8 or more years.

Then 2 days ago, I received a letter from Medicare saying that not only were they denying my claim to be on the original, non-generic brand but that the price they had quoted me was going back up as well.

Now, if that wasn’t bad enough, I place a call over to Walgreens

to renew my prescription where I’m told that there is another nationwide shortage of my Progesterone, and they have no idea when they will be able to refill it.

This is absolutely ridiculous and as I said to the pharmacist answering the phone that the world is about to have WWlll on their hands if they don’t figure out a way to handle this shortage. I promise you women without their hormones will wreak havoc on the world which none of you men will survive! And that is no threat but instead an absolute FACT!

I am now scrambling to contact every pharmacy in PS and the surrounding area to see if there are alternatives! I am furious and frankly scared of my own behavior so please be forewarned!!!!!

MUSIC TOM GOSS PERFORMS AT THE ROOST LOUNGE

Tom Goss will be in Cathedral City for a live show at The Roost Lounge on Sunday, April 7th. He will perform songs from his latest album, Remember What It Feels Like, including “Not My Problem,” his new pop rock banger about his true-life five-year relationship with a very impressive Englishman who was not all who he appeared to be.

“I fell in love with a charming but criminal con man who is now in prison,” Goss reveals. He says it was a painful experience in which he was gaslighted and manipulated into believing that it was his

responsibility to help heal a man that he loved. “When his lies were finally exposed, I realized that the vast majority of his problems were fabricated to control and take advantage of me.”

“He still writes me on a regular basis,” Goss continues from his Los Angeles home. “I have a year and a half of letters from a British prison in my house. I don’t read them, but I don’t throw them away either. It’s weird.”

He views the song and video as a “Dear John” letter to his ex; one that gives him the liberation—and last word—that he has longed for. The video is directed and styled by Michael Serrato, who Goss worked with previously on videos such as “Son of a Preacher Man” and “Nerdy Bear.” It was filmed on a prison set at Le Chalet in Los Angeles and in Tom’s own Sounds Awesome Studios in Inglewood. The video stars Goss, Dean Elex Bais as the lying ex, and drag queen Meatball as an overly amorous prison guard.

“Watching Meatball terrify Dean was a pure delight,” says Tom of filming the video. While the video is campy and comical, its message is a serious one. “It’s a declaration that my ex and his lies did not and will not break me. I’m resilient and strong and I will continue to believe in people and be a positive force in the world.”

“Not My Problem” is a bit angstier than other tracks on the album. TRANSCENDANCE THIS IS WHO I AM

There is a common feeling and desire among transgender people by just simply wanting to exist. There is a powerful reluctance by just in our presence to conform to the constructs around gender roles that have been instilled in all the human population since birth.

Transgender individuals want the freedom, a permission to exist authentically and embrace all the innate elements that make us human. We demonstrate that it is possible to disregard the arbitrary notion that certain traits, emotions, and expressions are “masculine” or “feminine.”

This is who I always was. I’m just living as that person authentically and with a euphoric happiness.

I look back at my childhood and realize that I fought this conflict around gender and performance well before I could understand and contextualize my own experience as a nonbinary transgender person. I didn’t even know what the word transgender meant. It was not in my vocabulary at the age of six.

As a child of the ‘70’s & 80’s, I didn’t have the language or understanding to express my relationship with gender. I was friends

with all my classmates until that age when children start to selfactualize and notice how others are similar or different from themselves, and gruel out how family and society expects them to behave. The group of girls I regularly hung out with in my grade slowly began to push me away. As their own interest in boys began to evolve in a new and exciting way, having me, a boy, as part of their group was no longer welcomed.

The boys in my class were at that age also began to posture themselves to perform for the girls. They would begin to change up this perception of needed masculinity and toughness as they prepared to enter middle school and adolescence. I was only a boy, one of the few guys who hung out with girls and embraced more “feminine” activities and attributes, it was clear I didn’t fit in with them either. I was severely bullied and beaten on many occasions. Just walking to and from the bus stop was very stressful and scary.

I never came out to anyone. Mostly because I did not understand what was “wrong” with me. I knew I was not gay but thought I may be bisexual. It was never really about my sexual orientation. There was something deeper, something I could not and did fully understand.

In Virginia where I spent my middle and high school years back in the 1980’s, I was enough of a rarity. I was doing all sorts of things from sports, riding motorbikes and even volunteering for the local re department just so I didn’t put a target on my back.

When I talk about being transgender and breaking down gender roles, I posture it as being beneficial for all people. It’s the same way I talk about feminism to get men on board — like, “Hey, this is actually good for you, too.” If men only understood and I mean really understood and tapped into their feminine side, they would come to appreciate and respect cis women better. That is true for transgender people as well. I often say that I carry both “play books”. We will get into that in a future writing.

Humans are immensely complex. I still can’t fathom how so many people still believe that just because someone has specific anatomy or chromosomes that they must conform to a single, rigid expression and role. It eliminates so many aspects of what makes us human and minimizes the complexity of the human experience.

I caught onto these expectations much later in life, as my demeanor became much more sensitive, emotional, and “feminine” while I was growing up as a man(?). I thought I was just being myself.

I didn’t bury the elements that society told me were inappropriate for my gender, and fortunately, my parents pushed me to be as masculine and only do boy or men things. I am certain they suspected something was afoot early on in my childhood.

Since fifth grade — when those gendered differences became abundantly clearer — I’ve often found myself wondering why gender is so important in our world to begin with. What would society look like if we didn’t have these set rules that so many people at such young ages are pressured to conform to?

I especially think of the boys I was surrounded with in my childhood and adolescence who were silly and carefree in elementary school and gradually hardened as they got older.

As an adult I’ve only maintained friendships with a few cis straight men, mostly because it’s clear that so many don’t know what to do when they find themselves interacting with me. I can see them processing how they “should” treat me — I’m not a woman, so that’s out the window. I’m clearly not what society would consider to be a man or at least don’t share that same social experience in the way I present and carry myself. It was all a facade, I had to keep pretending to be this ultratough and masculine man. I even served honorably in the United States Marine Corps just to prove to everyone else I was something I was not. Best kept secrets are the ones where you tell no one.

TRANSCENDANCE

I see that my existence, and the existence of transgender and gender-nonconforming people, is often perceived as threatening to the status quo. It’s daunting to those people who never questioned these arbitrary messages, whose identities are deeply confined to these restrictions.

This conversation often makes me reflect on a statement made by nonbinary poet and activist Alok Vaid-Menon on “The Man Enough” podcast in 2021: “People have been taught to fear the very things that have the potential to set them free.”

In this years-old video that replays in my mind frequently, VaidMenon says, “The reason you don’t fight for me is because you’re not fighting for yourself fully. And any movement that’s trying to emancipate men from the shackles of heteropatriarchy, emancipate women from traditional gender ideology, must have trans and nonbinary people at the forefront because we are the most honest. We’re tracing the root.”

I’m not saying that every person is trans or that every cis man or woman must have some sort of latent identity they have yet to address. But when we are taught so aggressively, so consistently to conform to specific expectations based on what a doctor saw between our legs shortly after we entered this world, we are no doubt inhibited from fully embracing ourselves as we are.

I intimately felt it as I tried to cram myself into the ill-fitting “male” label for the bulk of my life – until I saw how other trans and nonbinary people were happily navigating their lives beyond these constraints.

I rejoice, however, when I see the progress among cis men addressing the harms of toxic masculinity. This is evident when we see the many ways cis men today look to unlearn these harmful

teachings about how they “should” act in society through workshops, classes, and therapy. I’ve seen groups explicitly made for men to be emotionally vulnerable with one another, to reimagine what modern masculinity even means. Simply allowing themselves to be emotionally mature, to communicate, and to feel is paramount to their personal concept of gender and what it means to be a man. After all, there is an inherent power in vulnerability.

While I tout these wins, it’s impossible to ignore today’s male influencers who relay the same tired, harmful messages of the past — often littered in misogyny, homophobia and transphobia — surrounding “proper” gender roles to their audience of impressionable young boys.

The fight rages on, and the transgender community remains at the forefront.

Trans people should receive support from their cis counterparts because it’s the right thing to do, because we need help from groups in power to ensure equity. But I also hope cis people understand that these constraints around gender that trans actively push against every day don’t benefit anyone. They rob us of humanity, authenticity, and connection with one another.

I think about the queer and trans spaces in which I regularly find myself in which of course include cisgender people, too. In these spaces, we can all be whoever we are without a value judgment around our existence.

I witnessed this magic before I came out as trans myself, and while we have a mountain of obstacles to overcome, I find relief in thinking about the world taking on that same model — every person expressing themselves innately as they see fit, with gender roles and restrictions fully of the table.

The trans community has challenged tired notions, these prevailing messages around how we “should” act in society, in favor of our own pursuit of happiness.
