TRENDS SHAPING THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS ARENA IN 2024

It’s no secret that health and fitness are important parts of our lives. Staying in shape allows us to do our favorite activities pain free (for the most part) and has been said to prevent or avoid health problems and can extend life expectancy. That’s why staying up to date with the latest trends and developments in health and fitness is crucial. In 2024, the fitness world is evolving even further with new trends emerging and gaining popularity. Here are a few fitness trends to watch out for in 2024.

COVER

VIRTUAL REALITY WORKOUTS

Virtual reality (VR) technology has been making waves in various industries, and the fitness world is no exception. We can expect to see a surge in virtual reality workouts that provide a fully immersive and interactive exercise experience. Imagine being able to cycle through scenic routes, climb mountains, or participate in group classes from the comfort of your own home. VR workouts not only make exercise more engaging and fun, but they also open new possibilities for personalizing and tracking your fitness journey.

PERSONALIZED NUTRITION AND FITNESS PLANS

While they’ve been around for many years, in 2024, personalized nutrition and fitness plans take center stage. As more people seek tailored approaches to meet their unique health and fitness goals, the demand for personalized nutrition and fitness plans continues to grow, offering individuals a customized path to success. With advancements in technology and data analytics, personalized plans can now factor in things such as genetics, lifestyle, and preferences to create customized workout routines and meal plans. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, build muscle, or improve your overall health, personalized nutrition and fitness plans can help you optimize your results and stay motivated on your fitness journey.

BIOMONITORING AND WEARABLES

While wearable devices such as watches have been popular for years, new modalities powered by breakthrough technologies have ushered in a new era for biomonitoring and wearable devices. Wearable biometric rings, for example, are now equipped with sensors that provide consumers with insights about their sleep quality through paired mobile apps. Continuous glucose monitors, which can be applied to the back of the user’s arm, provide insights about the user’s blood sugar levels, which may then be interpreted by a nutritionist who can offer personalized health guidance.

FUNCTIONAL FITNESS TRAINING

Functional fitness training has been a staple in the fitness world for some time now, but in 2024, we can expect to see a renewed focus on this approach. Functional fitness involves performing exercises that mimic movements you use in everyday life, helping you build strength, flexibility, and stability that translate to improved performance in daily activities. Expect to see a rise in functional training equipment and classes that target specific movement patterns and muscle groups to enhance overall functional capacity.

MINDFUL MOVEMENT PRACTICES

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on the mind-body connection in fitness, and this trend continues in 2024. Mindful movement practices such as yoga, Pilates, and tai chi are becoming more popular as people seek ways to not only improve their physical fitness but also reduce stress and enhance mental well-being. These practices focus on breath control, alignment, and mindfulness, helping you cultivate a deeper awareness of your body and movement patterns.

ECO-FRIENDLY FITNESS

With sustainability becoming an increasingly important topic, eco-friendly fitness trends are gaining momentum in 2024. From biodegradable workout gear to gyms powered by renewable energy sources, the fitness industry is taking steps to reduce its environmental impact. Expect to see more fitness brands prioritizing sustainability in their products and practices, giving you the opportunity to make greener choices while staying active.

HEALTHY AGING

Demand for products and services that support healthy aging and longevity is on the rise, propelled by a shift toward preventive medicine, the growth of health technology (such as telemedicine and

COVER

digital-health monitoring), and advances in research on antiaging products. The public consider it “very” or “extremely” important to purchase products or services that help with healthy aging and longevity. As populations across developed economies continue to age (one in six people in the world will be aged 60 or older by 2030), we expect there to be an even greater focus globally on healthy aging.

GUT HEALTH

Probiotic supplements are the most frequently used gut health product. Other options include probiotic-rich foods such as kimchi, kombucha, or yogurt, at home microbiome testing as well as overthe-counter medications.

LOW IMPACT WORKOUTS

The pandemic environment has inspired more and more people who were previously living a sedentary lifestyle to consider exercise to improve their overall well-being. Many of these people are intimidated by the high intensity, high impact workouts that often take place on the gym floor. Catering to them with low impact, nonthreatening workout options will become increasingly important this year. Gyms that offer low impact, low threat beginner group classes using such equipment as recumbent cycles, rowing machines, and steppers will be better equipped to cater to this demand.

SMALL-GROUP PERSONAL TRAINING

Small group personal training, where groups of between four and ten people work with a personal instructor, is becoming more and more popular. With gas prices going through the roof,

the cost effectiveness of these group classes is a big plus. So is the camaraderie and the group motivation effect.

FITNESS RECOVERY

Over the past few years, there has been an increasing level of research into the benefits of fitness recovery. This has spurred increasing public interest in doing more than simply resting between workouts. Active recovery tools such as foam rollers and massage guns have become very popular over the last year and will only become more so this year.

WELLNESS COACHING

There has been a huge growth in the hiring of wellness coaches over the last few months and this trend is set to continue through 2024. Some insurance companies are already paying for wellness coaching to reduce the number of claims. Wellness coaches work with clients to develop a personal wellness blueprint and then guide them to its implementation. Coaches typically meet with their clients once or twice a week for 30-40 minutes each session.

The fitness trends of 2024 are exciting and diverse, offering something for everyone regardless of their fitness level or preferences. Whether you’re a true fitness buff looking to stay ahead of the curve or an enthusiast eager to try new approaches, keeping an eye on these top trends can help you navigate the evolving fitness world with confidence. Embrace these trends, experiment with new workout styles, and most importantly, have fun staying active and healthy in 2024.

MENTAL HEALTH & THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY

As a result of historical oppression, social stigma and systemic health care challenges, people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning (LGBTQ+) experience mental health and substance use challenges at alarmingly higher rates than those who do not identify as LGBTQ+.

LGBTQ+ communities comprise a vast range of varying identities and expressions of gender and sexual orientation. LBGTQ+ communities also represent much diversity across race, religion, physical ability, ethnicity, nationality and socioeconomic status. The product of these identities and expressions is intersectionality. Lived experience and collective understanding unites members of LGBTQ+ communities and often results in pride and resiliency.

Recent evidence suggests that members of this population are at significantly higher risk for experiencing mental health challenges. For example, LGBTQ+ adults are more than twice as likely to have a mental health disorder in their lifetime and roughly twice as likely to experience a substance use challenge when compared to heterosexual adults. Additionally, transgender individuals are four times as likely as cisgender individuals to experience a mental health disorder. The LGBTQ+ population is notably at a much higher risk for suicidal thoughts and attempts than those who are heterosexual or cisgender.

LGBTQ+ youth are especially vulnerable to experiencing negative health outcomes, including suicidal ideation and substance use challenges. Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual adolescents are more than twice as likely to report experiences of persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness than their heterosexual counterparts. Read more on LGBTQ+ statistics to uncover the grueling mental health and substance use challenge inequities this population continues to face.

A solution?

It is evident that the mental health and substance use crisis disproportionately affects members of the LGBQT+ community. Health care providers have an opportunity to improve the overall wellbeing of individuals who identify as LGBTQ+. Integrated care – the coordination of general health, mental health and substance use treatment through a patient-centered, team-based approach –can play a key role in addressing the unique needs of LGBTQ+ populations. Leveraging integrated care and its associated models supports comprehensive treatment of the whole person and offers an identity and gender-affirming approach to care that is sensitive, responsive and affirming to patients with varying gender identities and expressions including those who are transgender.

COVER STRESS MANAGEMENT TIPS

How’s your stress level? If you’re like most people - 75% of Americans have experienced certain levels of stress according to a survey by the American Psychological Association - you know the feeling and impacts it can have on your day-to-day life. That’s a staggering figure. A little well-timed stress can be a good thing. Think about those butterflies you might get before a big presentation or an important meeting. That stress can help you focus on delivering your A game.

Severe, prolonged stress? That’s different. It can affect your health more than you realize.

Stress affects just about every system in our bodies, from headaches to chest pain and shortness of breath.

The mind and body are inextricably connected, so all of that worrying and fretting and even fear that’s roiling around in your brain can manifest in the body in many adverse ways, including:

• Pain

• GI symptoms like decreased appetite, nausea, irritable bowel syndrome

• Chest pain

• Elevated heart rate

• Sweating

• Impaired sleep

• Decreased immunity

• Mood swings

• Poor concentration

That’s no way to live. While we can’t eliminate the various causes of stress in our lives - global unrest, political turmoil, rising prices, workplace hassles, job uncertainty, money problems, family strife and much more - we can do something about how we react to that stress. Thompson calls it “resilience,” the ability to adapt to challenging situations and maintain an acceptable level of functioning despite stress and adversity.

Building resilience is about identifying and strengthening our protective factors, those things in our lives that can buffer and insulate us from stress. Things like religion or spirituality, meaningful family relationships, access to and engagement in health care, financial stability, a sense of purpose and the ability and willingness to seek help.

STRESS MANAGEMENT TIPS INCLUDE:

Exercise. It might be the last thing you want to do when you’re feeling low, but exercise lowers the levels of stress hormones, increases endorphins, and leads to increased oxygenated blood flow to the brain. This doesn’t mean you have to run a marathon every day. Walk the dog. Get outside in nature. Yoga has been proven to increase gamma-aminobutyric acid, which leads to decreased anxiety and a better mood.

Meditation. Never done it? No problem. Meditation decreases activity in our limbic system, which plays a role in emotional response, fight-or-flight, aggression and more. All you need is a comfy chair and a quiet room. Start with five minutes. There’s no secret technique or trick to it - just be in the moment. If thoughts float in, usher them out. A good way to do this is to focus on the simple act of breathing in and out. Or find a guided meditation app to help you along.

Sleep. Do you know anyone who gets enough sleep? Poor sleep is the lament of the masses, and it can lead to myriad health problems, not the least of which is being exhausted the next day. With stress, it’s a double-edged sword because stress causes sleep problems, and sleep problems exacerbate stress. To combat this, focus on getting a good night’s sleep. Set yourself up for success with a dark, quiet room at a comfortable temperature, not too warm, not too cold. Be consistent with your bedtimes, even on weekends. Avoid large meals, caffeine or alcohol before sleep.

Nutrition. You might be surprised by how much nutrition plays into our feelings and mood. If you overeat, you feel sluggish. Everyone knows what Thanksgiving afternoon feels like. But did you know you can feel lethargic if you undereat? Sugar and processed foods can contribute to inflammation in the brain and body. Instead, focus on foods that are good for your mental health like fruits, leafy greens, veggies, nuts, seeds, beans and lentils.

You can’t completely eliminate stress. But focusing on exercise, meditation, sleep, and eating right can help you be resilient to stress factors and help insulate you from stress.

CHOOSING SUPPLEMENTS THAT HIT THE MARK

There are over 80,000 vitamins and dietary supplements on the market, but not all are created equal. Seventy-four percent of Americans take dietary supplements to improve their quality of life. However, many are unaware that the quality of these products can vary greatly.

Most consumers are misinformed about how the dietary supplement industry is regulated, which can lead to inaccurate or dangerous assumptions about supplement quality. Since 1994, dietary supplements have been regulated as a category of foods, meaning that they do not require U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval before they are sold to the public. For this reason, what is listed on a supplement label may not be what is actually in the bottle. Looking for products with independent third-party verification, like those verified through U.S. Pharmacopeia’s (USP) Dietary Supplement Verification Program, can offer consumers peace of mind that the supplements they consume are made up of what’s listed on the label.

A growing number of reports and recalls have raised concerns about inconsistent quality in the dietary supplement industry. For example, in 2022, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) conducted a study reviewing 30 dietary supplements with claims related to immune health. Of these 30 supplements, 17 had inaccurate labels; 13 were misbranded, and nine had additional components detected that were not claimed on the label. Outcomes like this make it clear that without independent third-party verification, it’s hard for consumers to know what exactly is in the supplements they choose.

“Every year, the dietary supplement industry expands, thanks to increased consumer demand,” Michael Rashed, Director of NonPharmaceutical Programs at USP, said. “As we continue navigating a growing market of health and wellness products, it’s crucial for consumers to understand how supplements are regulated and to prioritize selecting products that have undergone third-party testing.”

Only products that meet USP’s rigorous testing, review and auditing criteria receive the USP Verified Mark. When consumers see this symbol, they know that USP has independently reviewed and tested the product to confirm it meets USP’s quality standards:

• Contains the ingredients listed on the label in declared strengths and amounts

• Does not contain harmful levels of specified contaminants

• Complies with FDA Good Manufacturing Practices

• Will break down and dissolve within a specified amount of time so the dietary ingredients can be released and absorbed by the body

In fact, in a USP-led survey of nearly 300 licensed healthcare practitioners, including dietitians, nutritionists, physicians, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners, the top three most important elements when recommending a dietary supplement were product quality, ingredient list, and quality assurance marks or seals.

“It’s of utmost importance that consumers can trust the quality of the supplements they are taking to support their health. The USP Product Finder is a searchable tool for all products that have earned the USP Verified Mark,” Rashed said. “We encourage consumers to use this tool so they can make informed choices when purchasing supplements.”

The product finder features over 150 dietary supplement formulas that have received the USP Verified Mark, including melatonin, multivitamins, prenatal, probiotics, and other popular vitamins and supplements. USP Verified Products are sold at major retailers, grocery stores, pharmacies, and wholesale retailers across the U.S., as well as online through product websites.

When purchasing new supplements or restocking favorites, follow these steps:

• Use the USP Verified Product Finder to find trusted, quality supplements

• Look for the USP Verified Mark

• Consult with a healthcare provider before incorporating a new supplement into your routine

COVER PRODUCE PRESCRIPTIONS

The connection between the foods we eat and their effects on our physical health has always been generally understood but not necessarily followed.

In recent years, this disconnect has resulted in dramatically increased rates of diet-related diseases, including obesity and diabetes. Driving both conditions is poor diet, which annually contributed to more than 14.1 million cases of type 2 diabetes alone.

Since the pandemic, researchers have found Americans’ physical and mental health has fallen, with more individuals reporting diabetes diagnoses, less healthy eating, and other health problems. Roughly two-thirds of Americans are currently overweight or obese.

These diseases burden our healthcare system, where 8 out of 10 healthcare dollars are spent on chronic, preventable diseases.

In response to these epidemics of diet-related disease, interventions like produce prescriptions, or Produce Rx, have been introduced to some health care providers and the communities they serve.

People who care about their health have wanted to know - what is a produce prescription?

A patient gets an actual prescription from their doctor for a fruit and vegetable benefit on a card or voucher that can be redeemed at a participating grocery store. This benefit is typically refillable monthly and is covered by health insurance at no or low cost to the patient. Currently there are 250 produce prescription programs operating in 38 states.

More than 150 million Americans are covered by federal insurance programs and if embedded as a covered benefit into the

federal health system, produce prescriptions could reach millions of eligible Americans.

While some critics say produce prescriptions are merely a passing trend, data exists that show Produce Rx is both economically feasible and effective, as well as much more natural than a traditional prescription from a doctor.

Tufts University found produce prescriptions for 40- to 79-yearolds facing diabetes could prevent 296,000 cases of cardiovascular disease over their lifetimes.

Another study found that produce prescription program participants consumed more fruits and vegetables and reduced food insecurity. They also self-reported health status among both adults and children and found the program resulted in a wide array of improvements across several metabolic health markers, boosting long-term health.

The International Fresh Produce Association, a global organization leading the fresh fruit and vegetable industry, is working to scale produce prescriptions on several fronts.

As part of IFPA’s work to support the U.S. National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, the association developed a video distributed to medical schools and more than 5 million student/ medical professionals worldwide to help them understand how they can prescribe fruits and vegetables to their patients (in addition to any medications needed) to manage symptoms of chronic disease.

Produce prescription programs hold great promise to help more consumers eat more fresh fruits and vegetables to optimize their health and enjoy lives filled with vitality and vibrancy.

FEATURE GET THAT CORE INTO SHAPE

Core. The Center. You will be surprised, if you don’t know already what an important part the core plays in health. Stability, agility, flexibility and overall, well-being. Here are a few tips to help you get started on achieving a healthy and strong core.

WHICH MUSCLES MAKE UP THE CORE?

The core starts at the lower rib cage and extends to the buttocks. Core muscles in the abdomen include the long rectus abdominis muscles in the front; the external and internal obliques on the sides; and a wide, flat girdle in front called the transversus abdominis.

In your back, a group of muscles called the erector spinae help you stand up tall. The gluteal muscles in the buttocks help you extend your leg, push off from a starting point, walk, and climb stairs.

And in the pelvis area, the iliacus and the psoas muscles enable you to lift your legs and remain stable while standing; and the quadratus lumborum, a long muscle on each side, helps you bend to the side and back.

WORST CORE EXERCISES

In the old days, sit-ups and crunches were the go-to moves to keep your core muscles in good shape. But those exercises are not as effective as we once believed.

A much better approach to strengthening your core is working several core muscle groups at the same time, just the way you would naturally if you were lifting something or climbing.

BEST CORE EXERCISES

Glute Bridges. Anyone can do a bridge. You start in a recumbent position on your back and then lift and hold your buttocks off the ground. It’s effective because you create rigidity from the rib cage to the pelvis and all the way from the belly button around to the back. The whole region becomes solid, and it creates a contraction of all the muscle groups, like a corset. Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart. Place your arms at your sides. Tighten your buttocks, then lift your hips up off the floor until they form a straight line with your hips and shoulders. Hold. Return to the starting position. Repeat 10 times.

Planks. Planks create contractions of the core, arm, and shoulder muscles as you stay in a push-up position. The key is staying as stiff as you can, like a wooden plank,” Boehm says.

Modified plank. Start on your hands and knees. Tighten your abdominal muscles and lower your upper body onto your forearms, aligning your shoulders directly over your elbows and keeping your feet in the air behind you. Keep your back straight, making your body as much like a “plank” as possible. Hold the position and return to the starting position. Repeat 10 times.

Opposite arm and leg raise. This exercise gets you on your hands and knees. As you stretch out the opposite arm and leg, you’re contracting your core and the muscles in the other arm and leg as they support you. Movements should be slow and controlled; don’t throw your arm and leg out as fast as you can. Kneel on all fours, with your head and spine neutral. Extend your left leg off the floor behind you while reaching out in front of you with your right arm. Keeping your hips and shoulders squared, try to bring that leg and arm parallel to the floor. Hold, then return to the starting position. Repeat the exercise with your right leg and left arm. Repeat the exercise on both sides 10 times.

Remember to start slow and easy and stick to it. You will be surprised on how well you will start feeling overall.

FEATURE ON MEKAHEL MAKES A SPLASH

On Mekahel is an entertainment powerhouse. He is a model, actor, fashion designer and social media influencer with nearly three million followers. He is best known for starring on the reality show, Putting On, a series that ran for two seasons on Revry TV. It followed the ups and downs of his personal and business life, with viewers watching as the underwear model built his Mounderwear fashion empire from the ground up.

Mounderwear continues to thrive today with On Mekahel recently unveiling the company’s summer 2024 collection. He’s also adding one more title to his resume this summer: pop singer. This month, On Mekahel is debuting his first music single, “Play with Fire”. Produced by DJ Ran Ziv, the song is a European house and dance-pop record that captures the energy and excitement of the dance floor.

We caught up with On Mekahel from his home in Los Angeles.

Congratulations on the new song!

On Mekahel: Thanks! This song is just the beginning. I’m working on an entire EP!

Is singing a new thing for you?

Not really. Growing up, I was that kid that performed in every school and community event; the one that would put on a show wherever he was. The world has always been my stage.

Why was now the right time to release a music single?

There is never a better time than now to do absolutely anything. That’s my life’s motto! Also, I just felt ready and like I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I feel more confident now than ever before: ready to make the transition from shirtless boy on Instagram to someone that is creating a body of work that goes deeper. I know the direction I want to take my music and I’m not afraid of opening myself up to judgment.

Is that why you exited your show after two seasons? Did you grow tired of the judgement from viewers?

No, it was more due to creative differences with the network. While I loved the process and the results of doing the show, filming two seasons took a lot of time and energy. We won the Queerty Award for best streaming series in 2021, and after that, we sort of hit a plateau with the network and decided it was in everyone’s best interests to go out on top.

What did you learn from shooting the reality show?

I learned about the art of storytelling and all that is involved in the process of sharing your life with the world. It’s not nearly as simple as turning on the camera and filming. For the audience to engage with the show, the story must make sense and grab interest. As the person whose life is under a microscope, you want to make sure that certain elements of who you are and what you stand for shine through but it’s hard to do that when you have producers twisting the story to fit their narrative.

What were the best parts of doing a reality show?

Working with my husband every day. There is nothing I love more in life than spending time with him. The show also kept me extremely busy, which I loved. I’m a better version of myself when I’m busy.

Worst parts?

Having cameras in your face when things are not great in life. Like when my first love broke my heart, or when my husband and I were struggling with our relationship. Those were personal moments, but when you’re on a reality show, you’re required to show up and film, no matter what. But man, having a camera crew in the room with you makes life’s problems so much more difficult.

Would you do it again?

I don’t know. I’m forever thankful that I was given the opportunity, and I will always cherish how, especially after the first season, I received so many messages about how simply sharing my story had inspired men to come out, follow their heart and chase their dreams. That made everything worth it.

Do you credit the show with the success of your Mounderwear brand?

I believe that it helped in some ways, absolutely. It shined a spotlight on the brand, the creative process and the hard work we put into it. My social media channels also deserve credit.

How has the Mounderwear brand evolved in the last few years?

We grow a bit with every new collection we put out. Our customers are vocal, and we listen.

Your tattoos… You like?

Oh, yes. There are so many! Do you have a favorite?

I have two. I love the Eiffel tower tattoo because my husband

FEATURE

and I got married in Paris and we had what I can only call my dream ceremony. The second tattoo that has major significance would be my dog paws. My dog babies are my world. They are my rocks. My soul. I put their paws on my leg so we can walk together forever.

On Mekahel’s debut single, “Play with Fire”, is available on Apple, Spotify and all major streamers.

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED

Superb.

That word’s appropriate in this situation. Fantastic, that’s another. Transcendent or celestial, if you’re of that mind, or perhaps anointed. There are many adjectives you can use for a performer who transports you, one who sings to your soul. Sensational, breathtaking, outstanding, or – as in the new book “On Bette Midler” by Kevin Winkler – another, better word may be more suitable.

Born in Hawaii a few months after the end of World War II, Bette Midler was named after film star Bette Davis. It was a perhaps auspicious start: despite a minor disparity (Midler’s mother thought the movie star’s first name was pronounced “Bet”), young Midler seemed at a young age to want to follow in her almost-namesake’s footsteps. By age 11, she’d won accolades and prizes for her performances and she “yearned to be a serious actor...” As soon as she could, she headed for New York to seize her career.

Alas, her “unconventional” looks didn’t help win the roles she wanted but she was undeterred. Unafraid of small venues and smaller gigs, she “just blossomed” in New York City. Eventually, she landed at the Improv on 44th Street; the owner there helped her negotiate some minor work. Another man became her manager and secured a job for her at the Continental, a New York bath house strictly for gay men. She was hired for eight summer nights, Friday and Saturdays only, for fifty bucks a night.

Almost immediately, her authenticity, her raunchy language, and her ability to relate to her audience made her beloved in the gay community. Midler’s tenure at the Continental expanded and, though legend points to a longer time, she worked at the bath house for just over two years before moving on and up, to television, recording studios, movies, and into fans’ hearts. Still, asks Winkler, “Did it really matter what stage she was on? She touched audiences wherever she performed.”

In his earliest words – and, in fact, in his subtitle – author Kevin Winkler reminds readers that “On Bette Midler” is a book that’s “highly opinionated, filled with personal contemplations...” He is, in other words, a super-fan, but that status doesn’t mar this book: Winkler restrains his love of his subject, and he doesn’t gush. Whew.

That will be a relief to readers who wish to relish in their own fervor, although you’ll be glad for Winkler’s comprehensive timeline

and his wide, wide look at Midler’s career. Those things come after a long and fascinating biography that starts in 1970, takes us back to 1945, and then pulls us forward through movies, television appearances, stage performances, and songs you might remember –with appearances from Barbara Streisand, Barry Manilow, and Cher. It’s a fun trip, part confidential, part charming, part nostalgic, and very affectionate.

Despite that this is a “personal” book, it’s great for readers who weren’t around during Midler’s earliest career. If you were and you’re a fan, reading it’s like communing with someone who appreciates Midler like you do. Find “On Bette Midler.” You’ll find it divine.

FEATURE PINES PLAY, A VIBRANT NEW LIFESTYLE COLLECTION, CELEBRATES THE GAY PARADISE OF FIRE ISLAND PINES

Pines Play, a new lifestyle brand that pays homage to the rich history, unique style, and inherently sexy vibe of Fire Island Pines, is launching this summer. Founded by husbands Dennis Kenney and Steve McGee, longtime Manhattanites who have shared a second home in the Pines for five years, the brand encapsulates a wide range of items from tees and hoodies to limited edition art works and homemade scented candles. All feature original graphics and designs specially crafted to evoke the vibrant, liberated spirit of the iconic gay summer destination.

“Steve and I wanted to create something together that combined our professional backgrounds with our shared love for the Pines,” explains Mr. Kenney, a fashion expert on Good Morning America who previously worked as a Creative Director for one of North America’s largest retailers. His husband Steve McGee is a former Vice President at Bed Bath & Beyond. The pair co-founded Arroya Studio, the parent company of Pines Play. “We are excited to share our little slice of heaven with gay men around the world.”

Fire Island Pines has been a popular destination for gay men since 1952, when it was still illegal for two men to dance together in public. With its lush foliage, white sandy beaches, beautiful modern architecture, and miles of wood plank boardwalks, the island served – and still serves – as a refuge for men to take each other’s hands and explore their natural inclinations. It attracts celebrities from Calvin Klein to Liza Minelli and Andy Cohen.

The Pines Play collection reflects on the laid-back yet stylish vibe of the island paradise. Each piece is designed to capture a different aspect of its essence. The Meat Rack tank delves into the sexy, naughty history of the Meat Rack, the infamous cruising spot in the Pines. The Shower Tee embodies the freedom for men to show skin and enjoy the liberating atmosphere of the island. The Boys by the Beach design celebrates the carefree, sun-soaked days spent on the shore and the Pines Play Deer hoodie honors the iconic hoofed stags

that roam the dunes, a symbol of the island’s natural beauty. The fits of the tees, tanks and hoodies are comfortable and flattering and meant to be adaptable for a casual beach day or a chic night out.

The original designs, created by Pine Play’s in-house graphic artist team, are available as hangable art so that men can bring a piece of the Pines into their homes. They are also featured on glass wear, beach totes, and other accessories and apparel.

Pines Play even brings the scents of the island to homes with candles containing ferns, florals and woody aquatic fragrances. Sourced from Paris and Lithuania, each candle includes a card from the Major Arcana of the Tarot deck. The combination of the card and candle may suggest how and at what level the archetype of the candle manifests itself into the individual’s life.

For a real statement piece, Pines Play is unveiling its incredible candle incantations. Hand made by a famous Lithuanian silkscreen artist, M. P. Vilutis, the porcelain jars are adorned with a kaleidoscope of magical symbols and marked with a unique authenticity number. “As interior designers, we take pride in our taste and are excited to extend it to our customers in a humble yet sophisticated way,” says Steve McGee.

“Our collection appeals to those who value unique, high-quality pieces that tell a story”, he continues. “It is for the man who is not afraid to express himself and enjoys being part of a community that celebrates individuality.”

A percentage of the net proceeds from Pines Play is being donated to Fire Island-based 501(c)(3) organizations.

EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SOBRIETY & RECOVERY

Trend alert: non-alcoholic beverages. More Americans report they’re giving up alcohol or describing themselves as “sober curious.” This comes at a time when the impact of excessive drinking and drug use couldn’t be more acute. The CDC reports deaths from alcohol and drug use has been sharply climbing over the last two decades.

In a culture of prevalent drinking, getting sober is no small feat, but there’s help. I talked to DAP Health Peer Support Specialist Bill Bruner — who just celebrated 34 years sober himself — to find out what recovery looks like at the nonprofit.

What is sobriety? Is it different for different people?

I’m old school, so for me sobriety is absence of all mind-altering drugs and substances being ingested into your body. Recovery is more than that. Anybody can go into rehab and detox. Well, now what do you do? I tell people: All you have to do after you stop the drugs and the alcohol is change everything else about you.

How do you get sober? How do you start recovery?

The biggest thing is you ask for help. Can people do it on their own? Sure. But most people need some kind of foundation. You need somebody to guide you.

I’ve heard DAP Health offers something called SMART Recovery. How is this different from the traditional the 12-step program outlined by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)?

SMART Recovery [Self-Management and Recovery Training] has a more scientific base than a traditional 12-step program. There’s no higher power, there’s no sponsorship. It offers tools for selfmanagement and recovery training based on cognitive behavioral therapy. A lot of SMART recovery is open sharing in a support group. It’s being there for each other.

This question might be different for everyone, but why should someone get sober?

Because their life is falling apart. Thirty-four years ago, I

weighed 120 pounds. I could barely walk and I was covered with open sores. I thought I was dying of AIDS. It turned out malnutrition and addiction were killing me. That’s why I got sober. All my other options were gone.

What recovery resources are available at DAP Health?

DAP Health offers 12-step groups as well as SMART Recovery groups on a weekly basis. The Everything A group is a mix of all the 12-step groups and has been meeting for over 10 years here. There is a CODA meeting, a 12-step group weekly also. This is for freedom from co-dependency and partners, with all the healing 12-step groups also. Various 12-step groups have been in existence since the 1930s, starting with AA, and have been helping people with recovery ever

since. In 2024, recovery groups have branched out with other forms of groups, including the three SMART Recovery groups offered here at DAP Health, as well as Dharma Recovery and Celebrate Recovery groups in our local community. Everything helps people.

If someone is thinking about starting recovery, what should they know?

Things are going to change. Things will happen as you take control of your life. But things aren’t going to be perfect for the rest of your life because you don’t drink and use drugs anymore. It’s a journey. It’s not easy. It’s also not hard. And it’s really not easy. It’s not hard, because there are people like me to help. And it’s not easy, because it’s a big change.

JUICY SCOOP A NEW PLATFORM REIMAGINES ADULT ENTERTAINMENT THROUGH A FEMININE LENS

Jincey Lumpkin believes offering women a space that celebrates sexuality is crucial, especially after the recent Arizona abortion ruling. She has created Juicy Pink Box, an inclusive and sex-positive digital news site and shop that aims to explore the full spectrum of female desire by reimagining adult entertainment through a feminine lens.

“We are Goop meets Cosmopolitan Magazine,” Jincey Lumpkin explains. “Juicy Pink Box is a space for women to get advice, educate themselves, and engage in their deepest, wildest sexual fantasies.”

The website is broken down into five parts: Sex, Travel, Culture,

Confessions and Kink. The Sex section offers education and in-depth writing about sexual identity. Travel offers tips on hot honeymoon destinations and the best hotels for intimate encounters. Culture is a space for Juicy Pink Box writers to explore art, culture, and lifestyle writing and Confessions features stories about real-life, often anonymous, sexual experiences. Kink is the most hardcore vertical. It gets into the nitty gritty about all things Fifty Shades of Greyrelated, so it’s age-gated for 18+.

Jincey Lumpkin explains more.

JINCEY LUMPKIN BY SOFIA BARRRIERA PINTO SOARES

Q&A

What inspired you to launch Juicy Pink Box?

I love all things sex—talking about it, writing about it, having it… I also firmly believe in creating a positive, safe space where people, particularly women, feel empowered and excited to explore fantasies and desires, no matter what they may be.

However, as much as I love sex, I also didn’t start off in this space. It was actually while I was practicing law on Wall Street in the 2000s that I realized there was a big white space in adult entertainment as it related to elevated sensual content from a woman’s point of view. I started to wonder… was that my actual calling? To be a porn producer? Turns out… it was. After securing startup capital, I quit my day job as a lawyer and jumped into the wild, wild world of adult entertainment. I set to work producing my first Juicy Pink Box film, and the rest, as they say, is history.

How do you approach stories differently from other lifestyle outlets?

A Juicy Pink Box piece is smart, thoughtful, and sexually curious. It expands readers’ worldviews and shares a new perspective without ever talking down to them. Another important difference between us and other outlets is that we are free. The Cut has some similar articles, but it’s subscription-based.

Additionally, because Juicy Pink Box is your destination for all things sexy, everything we cover touches sexuality in some way. All the content has some connection to sexuality, romance, or related topics. Even old-school Playboy wasn’t like that.

I have to say that much of what I’ve read has opened my mind. For example, we just greenlit a piece called “Love Bites: Inside the World of Monsterfuckers.” It delves into the psychology of this community in an interesting way, but also from an insider perspective, so it’s not exploitative or judgmental. We’re always aiming to say, “Hey, here’s this cool thing. Maybe you’ll like it.” I tell the writers to write like they’re speaking to a friend.

Would you say that Juicy Pink Box has evolved from a lesbian adult entertainment company to a female empowering lifestyle brand?

We’ve expanded beyond lesbian sex to be much more inclusive, with straight, queer, trans, and kink/fetish content. All the NSFW erotic content is now hosted on a paid VIP membership site. The porn site also has erotic stories, audio, photography, and art. Plus, we’re offering new ways for members to watch including a shortform vertical video in an endless feed. Imagine a curated TikTok loop featuring hot romantic encounters.

JINCEY LUMPKIN BY SOFIA BARRRIERA PINTO SOARES

The media arm of Juicy Pink Box now helps to contextualize porn. You can read about something like erotic asphyxiation and learn about it: why it’s popular and how it can be dangerous. Then, you can watch videos about it. This kind of larger story around sex and porn has been missing for a long time.

After the recent Arizona abortion ruling, there has been an outcry of “Women Must Have Control Over Their Own Bodies”. Would you extend the argument to include that women should have control over their desires too?

Oh my god, without a doubt. You know, this push toward the far right, these massive steps backward that we have been forced into taking in this Post-Roe world we’re all trying to survive in, that’s a big reason why it’s more important now than ever to do this work.

There is immense power in sexuality. Why else do you think the far right seeks to control it and to legislate our bodies and our sexual choices? I was with a group of sex workers once, and they told me that the Republican National Convention is one of the places where they rake in the most cash. So, these bozos

are engaging in paid sex while their daughters and girlfriends and wives are having abortions.

Who is your target audience?

We call our target customer Beth. I was a Beth at one point in my life. A fun fact about Beth is that she thinks she’s a Charlotte, but she’s really a Samantha (Sex and the City reference). She’s a gal who likes brunch. She’s probably in a long-term relationship with a man, but she fantasizes about hooking a woman. Who doesn’t? Ha! She might be you, your sister, or your best friend. She lives in the city or the suburbs. Among her friends, she’s the one they always come to with their secrets because she’s curious, wise, and loyal.

We have a secondary customer called Arnold who we never need to market to because he’s along for the ride. He’s here because of Juicy Pink Box’s authenticity and we adore that and welcome him; but everything we do; we do with Beth in mind. The experience is ultra-curated for her.

PERSPECTIVE FLYING THOSE OH SO FRIENDLY SKIES

Happy July, my Friend! I hope this finds you all well, cool and hydrated! It’s a sizzler, and I don’t mean the fireworks!

I recently returned from a one-month hiatus from my daily routine, spending 3 weeks in beautiful but chilly and wet, northern Switzerland. Even the Swiss were shocked by the unseasonably cold and damp days of endless overcast skies and daily rain. But as the saying goes, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!”

And being that I’m a girl of extremes, it would only make sense that I returned to Palm Springs just in time for a heat wave!

I was forced to focus on things other than the weather and basically had to overcome the negative feelings that come up for me in climates that are not warm and sunny. This is one of the things that I have never been particularly good at but am trying to do better with as I get older.

I have been observing my behaviors on this trip and am embarrassed to say that I have a very short fuse for travel inconveniences like late Uber rides, delayed trains, baggage requirements that are jammed down your throat while checking in on-line but are not followed by staff at the check-in desks. I share this last experience with SWISSAIR at the Newark airport.

On the SWISSAIR app it says in no uncertain terms that your baggage cannot exceed a certain size. My carry-on which was fine in P.S. was now oversized for SWISSAIR, something that was not even a consideration when I packed, as I had never had this problem in the past.

My checked bag was also oversized and had it not been for my good friend, Jay, who had both a suitable sized checked bag as well as a carry-on sized one, I would have had to go suitcase shopping in Jersey.

Unfortunately, it also meant that I now had to go through all my belongings and leave about 7 pounds of clothes behind. I also

had to borrow Jay’s backpack as my personal item was too large. I fretted and sweated and believe it or not it took 4 hours to get it all weighed and properly measured!

I was ready to head to the Newark airport and ordered up an Uber. I head down to the street to wait for the car but never receive any notification as to the driver’s name or type of car. I also haven’t used the Uber app since pre-Covid and wonder if things have changed.

Overseas flights make you arrive 2 hours before take-off, so I wanted to leave myself plenty of time. The app said the car would arrive by 6:55pm and would get me there at 7:25pm for a 9:55pm flight. At 6:55pm, no car. At 7:05 still no car. I am sweating as I was told earlier by Jay that there are no cabs in Jersey City, only Ubers.

I feel panicked and don’t know what to do. I try to order another Uber, but the app won’t let me. I grab my bags and run back inside of the building to ask the concierge if he can help, when a man who’d been sitting in his car for at least 20 minutes on the phone in front of the building with no Uber sign, runs in and says, “Are you Jill?” to which I reply, “Yes!” He says, “Oh, I was looking for an Asian person as my Dispatcher told me that Jill was an Asian name!

Long story short, I make to EWR at 7:48pm and run to checkin. The airline attendant stops me before I can get to the check-in desk and says, “Your carry-on is too big!” This is after I measured it and made sure it is under the 8kg allotment. It’s also a KSWISS bag which for some silly reason made me believe that it would meet SWISSAIR’s requirements!

My ticket was of course economy and specifically said I was only allowed one checked bag! So, I said to her, “What am I supported to do now,” and she casually says, “Just go check it in!” And, I said, I thought I wasn’t allowed to!” She says, “No worries, we don’t follow those rules!”

On the last note, I had a fantastic time in Switzerland making

the best of a less a perfect situation; a wonderful time back in Newark, with an early Birthday party for me and amongst loving friends. However, I was delayed in Newark on my way back and as a result ended up missing my connecting flight in Phoenix making my return flight home a total drag.

This is the second time that I am returning from a long trip where I’ve missed my connecting flight and have had to spend the night in a city that I have no desire to be in! But that is the good news. The worst was the time I was returning to PS from a 6-week European disaster trip. I contracted food poisoning the morning of my departure but only after finding out from my neighbor who’d been watching my place that my apartment had been flooded! I was in Toronto and

was flying to LA then PS. We left Toronto late, so again, I missed my connection and had to wait for a 1:00am shuttle to take me and one other man to PS! It was a shit-show and that is not just a turn of phrase but more a description of the food poisoning!!!!!!!!

This time I made it home 24-hours after I had planned only to discover that my car battery was dead! Welcome Home Jill!

As a result, I’m planning on staying home all summer! Here’s wishing you better luck with your travel plans!

XOXO, Jill, you’re less than Lucky with Travel, Dancing Queen!

SUMMER SOUNDS CASSIE TAYLOR IS BACK!

Queer recording artist Cassie Taylor has released the official lyric video for her latest single “Deadname (Find You)” featuring BIPOC trans artists Cuee and Dante Foley. The driving disco beats, and infectious instrumentation provided by trans drummer Dante Foley embody the song’s themes of self-acceptance, liberation and embracing one’s authentic identity. The addition of trans rapper Cuee’s lyrical stylings add a dynamic layer to the track through the power in his thought-provoking verses.

“Deadname (Find You)” is a powerful anthem of solidarity and support for the transgender and nonbinary communities. Taylor partnered with Point of Pride, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing trans people with access to life-changing, genderaffirming health and wellness services. 50% of the song’s proceeds will be donated to the organization. The remaining 50% of proceeds will go to the trans musicians involved, Cuee and Dante Foley. Every play, download and share of the track contribute to making a tangible difference in the lives of those seeking access to life saving, gender-affirming care. By harnessing the power of music and community support, “Deadname (Find You)” serves as a

of hope and a

for

change, advocating for inclusivity, equality and dignity for all.

Cassie Taylor is a queer, BIPOC/bi-racial creative, producer, and community organizer. At age 16, Cassie started her performing career as an internationally-touring bassist and vocalist alongside her father, Trance Bluesman Otis Taylor. In 2014, Cassie took a nearly decade-long sabbatical from music, citing the mental and emotional strain of being a young woman in the music industry. Her return was marked by the underground popularity of her song “Spare Some Love,” which sheds light on the stigma and shame faced by houseless individuals. The success of the song was propelled by curated editorial playlists and gained traction in the pole & heels dancing communities, who were drawn to the slow groove and sultry vocals. For Cassie, her return to music signifies a chance for reinvention. “I’m not hiding who I am anymore. I came out publicly as queer in 2022, and the songs I’m writing and producing now stem from a place of total expression and authenticity.”

MUSIC BOY BLU & GREGORY DILLON RELEASE “2 DEADLY”

Fantasy pop star Boy Blu has teamed up with electro pop artist Gregory Dillon for the release of his latest single “2 Deadly” via Sad Magic Records. Produced by Gregory Dillon, the song invites us to step into an arena where 2010 underground tech house meets the adrenaline-fueled sounds of a modern Mortal Kombat. Channeling their more uninhibited alter egos, Boy Blu & Gregory Dillon worked together to write a razor-sharp anthem primed for fans that obsess over the cutting-edge fusion of pop and EDM.

About the inspiration behind his latest single, Boy Blu shares, “This song came from my passion for video games and my desire to create a song that made me want to dance. Gregory and I share an interest in the future of technology and how it can intersect with music. The inspiration for this song also comes from my personal insecurities; I envisioned it to transform myself, to build confidence and present a more empowered version of me to the world. It’s about feeling incredibly sexy and just ‘2 Deadly.’”

On collaborating with Gregory Dillon on “2 Deadly,” Boy Blu adds, “Everything we collaborate on feels incredibly natural. I can share a vague idea of a sound or an image I’m drawn to, and he has the remarkable ability to expand on it and turn it into something extraordinary. His talent is truly one-of-a-kind.”

The stylish and innovative music video for “2 Deadly,” out now, is a thrilling nod to dark ‘90s video game aesthetics, integrating cuttingedge technology with adaptive body suits that capture the artists’ movements in real-time. Directed by Zack Stauffer, the video stars Boy Blu—who also choreographed it—and Gregory Dillon personifying main character energy as sirens of the cyber world facing off against formidable foes. The video’s futuristic and imaginative vibe adds to “2 Deadly’s” electrifying soundscape and visual experience as it embodies the themes of vengeance, style and drama.

REVIVAL, PEYTON & GEO GOSPEL CHOIR RELEASE COVER OF GEORGE MICHAEL’S “FREEDOM!”

record label and artist collective Revival has released “Freedom” featuring vocalist and songwriter Peyton and the Geo Gospel Choir. The single is a cover of George Michael’s beloved “Freedom!” single off his 1990 album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1. The song is a powerful anthem of liberation and self-expression renowned for its candid lyrics that critique the music industry’s constraints and celebrate Michael’s journey towards personal and creative autonomy. Through soaring vocals and a modernized production, the collective’s powerful cover conveys the same urgency and timeless declaration of independence as the original track.

Popular for their dance-infused covers of iconic, classic songs, Revival has also released a music video for “Freedom” that gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the recording of the track and the incredible team behind it, including instrumentalists, vocalist Peyton and the GeO Gospel Choir.

About their decision to reinterpret the classic single, Revival shares, “We’re back with our seventh single, and this time we’ve

given the Revival treatment to George Michael’s titanic anthem, “Freedom.” Dance music’s powerhouse vocalist Peyton is no stranger to anthems, and with the collaborative backing of GeO Gospel Choir, we’re taking this classic to church and back again to the dance floor just in time for Pride month. “Freedom” is a record for the ages, but its message has never been more poignant and we’re proud to breathe new life into George Michael’s enduring lyrics, and a legacy that celebrates every human’s innate right to be who they want to be and live a life of respect and dignity.”

About his participation as lead vocalist on the song, Peyton notes, “From the beginning of my career until today, the artist who I’ve looked to most for inspiration both as a vocalist and a songwriter, has been George Michael. So, to be a part of this project which pays tribute to one of the greatest pop anthems of our time, at a moment in modern history when the message of “Freedom” feels more poignant than ever, is an honor and a responsibility that I’m deeply grateful for and take very seriously.”

MUSIC BILLY PORTER TAKES A “LEAP”

Making an important statement at just the right moment, global powerhouse and visionary iconoclast Billy Porter shares a new single entitled “Leap”. The song arrived as the perfect motivational anthem ahead of Juneteenth and Pride month celebrations. “Leap” previews the forthcoming Black Mona Lisa Vol. 2: The Cookout Sessions EP coming soon.

About the song, Billy Porter commented, “I always want to make sure I use my art to heal. Music is the universal language. We are in trying times right now and I wrote LEAP alongside of the late genius Andrea Martin to inspire love across all races, creeds, identities, and value structures. Welcome to the cookout!”

Produced by longtime collaborator Lofey (Mary J Blige, Mariah Carey, Chris Brown), and written by the late legendary songwriter Andrea Martin (Monica, Toni Braxton, En Vogue), “Leap” embodies a classic R&B groove and memorable melody designed to inspire. “How you gonna LEAP just standing there?” sings Billy in the chorus leaning into his role as a role model to millions of young people. “Better go leap, instead of standing there!”

Billy has took Pride month by storm, he hosted iHeartRadio’s “Can’t Cancel Pride” special, airing on Hulu and iHeartRadio platforms.
