The gay-themed film Una Noche is an example of this fresh approach to storytelling. Any Day Now USA, 2012, 97 Minute Running Time Topics: Gay/Lesbian, Romance Program: The Gay! La “His” Language: English Gala Screening Wednesday, January 09, 7:30 PM Camelot Theatres Meet Rudy Donatello (Alan Cumming), a cross-dressing crooner at an L.A. drag bar in the ‘70s who returns one night to find Marco, a young boy with Downs Syndrome, abandoned by his drug-addicted mother in the seedy apartment building he calls home. Perplexed about what to do with the boy, Rudy turns to Paul (Garret Dillahunt), a district attorney he’s recently had a brief fling with. To keep him out of social services Rudy offers himself as guardian, a generous gesture that moves the conservative Paul to volunteer his home – but even then the child’s fate is far from sure given the legal and societal impediments to gay adoption that existed in an era in which being gay was considered at least as much of an “affliction” as suffering from Down Syndrome. Director/co-writer Travis Fine, (PSIFF 2011 favorite The Space Between) presents a deeply moving story that eschews political issues in favor of human drama. But it is the brilliant Cummings, in a careerpeak performance as the tart-tongued drag performer Rudy, who provides the film with both wit and heart to spare. Winner: Audience Awards: Tribeca, Seattle, Chicago, Woodstock, Provincetown and L.A. Outfest Film Festivals

Desert AIDS Project

announces big news for 2013 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards Gala

February 9 A philanthropic powerhouse … a triple-threat volunteer/supporter/donor … and an entertainer whose heart is as powerful as her voice. All three of these will be honored at the 2013 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. Annette Bloch, whose philanthropy has brought a new vibrancy to the Coachella Valley, will receive the 100 Women Award, sponsored by Desert Regional Medical Center. At the 2012 gala the audience applauded wildly when she announced “I was so impressed from the very first time I met the people associated with Desert AIDS Project. That’s why I am creating the Annette Bloch Cancer Care Center at D.A.P. with a gift of one million dollars.” Mrs. Bloch had already shown her generosity to D.A.P. repeatedly as a member of its 100 Women annual giving program, and will sponsor the 2013 Partners in Activism Award – the fourth consecutive year she has sponsored an award at the gala. Julian diCiurcio will receive the 2013 Partners for Life Award. He has given more than 7,000 hours of his time to D.A.P., volunteering at its front desk, at its Revivals stores, and at many of its fundraising events. In addition, he’s been a member of the agency’s Care Team – a sort of “buddy program” for clients in need of special support – for 13 years. If this generous donation of his time

and talents wasn’t enough, Julian is also a long-time member of the Partners for Life annual giving program with his partner Rob, and left a legacy to D.A.P. in his estate plan. Lorna Luft, will receive the 2013 Community Service Award, sponsored by Bob Hayes and Jim Burba. Before singing “Cockeyed Optimist” at the 17th annual gala in 2011, Ms. Luft told the audience, “I’ve toured Desert AIDS Project and witnessed incredible care and compassion for men, women, and children. Especially touching was how much heart I saw in the eyes of the staff and volunteers. It is something you must all experience for yourselves. It will feed your soul.” She went on to personally give tours of D.A.P. the following Saturday, April 2 before joining the second annual Celebrity Doodles fundraiser for D.A.P. that same evening. “Annette, Julian, and Lorna have all been amazing supporters of D.A.P., each in their own way,” said David Brinkman, CEO of Desert AIDS Project. “We were so happy to have the opportunity to set aside a little special time for three of our hometown-heroes at a special party for our 100 Women and Partners for Life members.” In Addition Desert AIDS Project is excited to announce that Jesse Tyler Ferguson will host the 2013 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards in Palm Springs, California on Saturday, February 9th. The three-time Emmy® nominee is widely recognized for his portrayal of “Mitchell Pritchett,”

Maryland couples await 2013 as marriage equality law takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Same-sex couples in Maryland eagerly awaited the New Year, as at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, the state’s new marriage equality law takes effect. Many courthouses are expected to be open Jan. 1 — normally a holiday — for couples who want to marry on the first day possible. In Baltimore, Mayor Stephanie RawlingsBlake will open City Hall at 12:30 a.m., to accommodate seven same-sex couples who will be getting married. Among them will be Jim Scales, 68, and William Tasker, 60, who have been together 35 years. “It’s been a long time coming,” said Scales, who made a Christmas present of his marriage license to Tasker. Couples in Maryland have been able to obtain their marriage licenses since Dec. 6, with the provision that couples could not actually become legally married until the law takes effect Jan. 1.

The measure equality law, which contains exemptions for religious organizations that choose not to marry same-sex couples, passed the House of Delegates in last February in a close vote. Gov. Martin O’Malley, who promised in his 2010 re-election campaign to work toward enacting marriage equality while in office, made good on his promise and signed the bill in March. Opponents then gathered enough signatures to put the bill to a statewide vote, which passed on Nov. 6 with 52 percent in favor. Voters in Maine and Washington state also approved same-sex marriage at the ballot box in November. The Maine law took effect on Dec. 29, and the Washington state law took effect on Dec. 6. In total, nine states and the District of Columbia have approved same-sex marriage. The other states are Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

Brazil: Court ruling effectively legalizes same-sex marriage in Sao Paulo

A judge in the Brazilian state of São Paulo has ruled that gay and lesbian couples in civil unions will no longer have to apply to the courts to have their relationships “upgraded” to marriage, effectively legalizing same-sex marriage in the country’s most populous state. Sao Paulo state Judge Fernando Henrique Pinto ruled last week that state notaries will be required to register same-sex marriages without first getting court approval. Brazil currently requires couples in same-sex civil unions to apply to a state court in order to have their relationship recognized as a marriage.

Pinto said the judgement is “intended to enable the recognition and registration of the unions of persons of the same sex without legal provocation,” and that his ruling “honors human the dignity of a portion of society.” The measure will take effect in February, and could serve as an important precedent for other Brazilian states and Latin American countries. Brazil has rapidly advanced its gay marriage and civil unions laws in the past two years — in 2011, Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court approved same-sex couples to receive the same rights as married couples through civil unions. In Latin America, same-sex marriage is only legal in Argentina and Mexico City, while same-sex civil unions are recognized throughout Colombia, Uruguay, Brazil and Ecuador. With a population of more than 41 million, Sao Paulo is Brazil’s most populous state. Its capital, also named Sao Paulo, is the largest city in South American and the world’s seventh largest city by population. Sao Paulo hosts one of the world’s largest Gay Pride events with over 3 million participants.

Website helps Dutch Catholics protest church’s opposition to gay marriage AMSTERDAM — A website operator in The Netherlands is helping thousands of Dutch Catholics research information on how that can leave the church in protest of its opposition to same-sex marriage. In just a few days Tom Roes’ website — which gives Dutch Catholics the ability to download the documents necessary to leave the church — has seen its traffic explode. According to Roes, traffic on ontdopen.nl has soared from about 10 visits a day to more than 10,000 after Pope Benedict’s latest denunciation of same-sex marriage. “Of course it’s not possible to be ‘de-baptized’ because a baptism is an event, but this way people can unsubscribe or de-register themselves as Catholics,” Roes said, although he admits he has no way of verifying just how many visitors to his website actually follow through and leave the church. Roes, a television director, said he left the church and set up his website partly because he was angry about the way the church

downplayed or covered-up sexual abuse in Catholic orphanages, boarding schools and seminaries. The Dutch government estimates that 28 percent of the country’s population are Catholic with a smaller 18 percent declaring themselves Protestant. Also according to government statistics, a much larger proportion — roughly 44 percent — is not religious at all. The Netherlands is famous for its liberal attitudes, for example having legalized brothels in Amsterdam’s famed red light district along with cannabis cafes in almost every major city and town. In April of 2001, the Dutch government was the first in the world to legalize same-sex marriages. In his Christmas address to Vatican officials, the Pope Benedict XVI signaled that he was ready to forge alliances with other religions around the globe in attempts to halt same-sex marriage. The pontiff told the church hierarchy that “the family was threatened to its foundations” by attempts to change its “true structure”.

TOTALLY LAUGHABLE!

FATTY, FATTY, TWO-BY-FOUR! An irregular, monthly column by Comedian Shann Carr

I’ve always been a chubby gay, but now I’ve hit critical mass. I woke up this morning to find that my teeth and tongue were BLUE! Sadly, in the middle of the night I’d eaten the bag of blue Jordan Almonds from my friend’s Hanukah party. There was one stuck to my pillow, too! OMG! I’m the volunteer coordinator at The LGBT Community Center of the Desert and along with a handful of co-workers and volunteers, we’ve just put together a fitness and weight loss group to support each other and our clients in a healthful endeavor to start the new year. Oh, yeah, and to enlist eye-witnesses to help keep us in line. As many ways as I’ve tried to lose weight, I’ve never set out to get fit with a group, but everyone says it can make a huge difference. This group is FREE to all members of The Center, and membership is super-cheap. So, if you’re reading this, and it is before Jan 8th, and you live in Palm Springs… come join us. I’ve gotta find a better ultimatum than “If nobody is going to fu@k me… I’m gonna have to eat this!” I’m tired of a lifetime of losing this battle, which is exactly how I felt when I finally managed to successfully get off of cigarettes. I had about given up on ever having a victory over that addiction too. The group is called Lets Get Better Together. (Get it? L.G.B.T!) Every Tuesday evening, medical professionals from Eisenhower will come to The Center to weigh and measure us. Next they’ll give us a QUICK pep-talk about nutrition, exercise or something like the psychology of fitness and weight loss. That will be followed by our own

freestyle bitch-and-moan session, where we can say everything that might help us figure out how to end this damn, double-wide roller coaster so many of us are riding. I ask you… Do the number of “X’s” on your T-shirt resemble a really, really, really dirty movie? Can you pinch an inch… on your forehead? Do you leave the house wearing high heels and arrive at your destination in flats? Are you genuinely laughing… but kinda saddened by the fat jokes? I know. Maybe you just want to make sure that you are fueling your body in a healthy way, or you want to get active without the pressure to get all fanatic about it? Mostly, I want to have a constructive hand in my own health and well-being, and I’d love to drag my friends along for the adventure. Also I’d love to have a neck again! With Twinkies officially off the market, there has never been a better time to get a handle on my health. We’re going to be there for each other, to laugh and to cry, and then to laugh about crying. I am determined to figure out how to live at a healthy weight. If you wanna participate, check out The LGBT Community Center of the Desert at www.thecenterps.org If you’d rather watch from your couch, I’ll keep you in the loop. Do you have pockets to stick things in, even when you’re naked??? HA! OK, shutting up! Shann Carr

buyiNg hoMe & FiNANciNg A reNTAL hoMe by JeFF hAmmerberg

With property values rising, and the economy continuing to turn more and more people into home-renters instead of home-buyers, now is a fantastic time to purchase a rental home and become a landlord. higher rents, added equity with each passing month and a slew of qualified renters to choose from = success. Like any business, starting a rental property business has startup costs involved ~ if you have solid credit and a nest-egg you can put towards a down payment, are organized enough to handle the details of leases, deposits, maintenance and repairs..., it’s a great side business. to purchase a home as a simple rental property, you’ll have to plan on a 25% down payment. As a Non-Owner Occupant (NOO) your costs on a mortgage are slightly higher than they would be as an owner occupant. With current loan rates, you can likely get a 4.5% 30-year loan. Of course if you have the flexibility, you can buy as an Owner Occupant (OO) with as little as 3.5% down. To qualify as an OO you need to actually live in the property as your principle residence for

at least 24 months ~ check with your mortgage lender to determine the amount of time you need to live in the home before you can rent it. You will be purchasing this home as your personal residence, so it makes for a good first investment property. With getting started in the rental game, these costs and fees can be daunting, what can you do if you’re unable to purchase it as an owner occupant? Find a property that already has renters living in the home. You’re going to face the fees involved in a “non-owner occupant” purchase, but you can help in the loan process by showing instant income from the existing tenants. they can help offset downpayments with their first month’s rent and deposit, and you won’t have any “lag time” between purchase and your first month’s worth of payments. purchasing a home as a rental property involves a great deal of preparing, paperwork, and financial investment, but the added income you’ll see will make it more than worth your while as long as you plan carefully before diving in. The wireless industry is creeping ever closer to instantaneous interaction all the time according to mobile experts. Noah Kravitz, a mobile expert and founder of the new consumer buyer’s guide FutureSmarter.com, believes that the wireless industry is going to see a boom in convenience and speed over the next year. Wireless providers, device manufacturers, app developers and network service providers are all working to offer consumers a greater range of flexibility than ever before, whether it is in the form of payment, upgraded devices or network connectivity. “Society dictates a need for convenient technology,” says Kravitz. “What is particularly exciting about the wireless industry is the crosssection between technology as entertainment and technology as communication and how to accommodate for both.” Heading into 2013, Kravitz, in partnership with U.S. Cellular,

tech anticipates five trends that will pulse through the wireless industry over the next year: 1. 4G LTE Next-generation 4G LTE networks are bringing broadband speeds to mobile device users in more parts of the country every day. As smartphones and tablets take the place of computers, access to high-speed downloads and uploads via 4G LTE allows users to stream

trends Not five years ago, a 3.5-inch display on a smartphone was considered very big. Over the past three months, Samsung has sold 3 million units of the Samsung Galaxy Note(R) II which has a 5.5-inch display and is widely available from carriers like U.S. Cellular. What is happening to smartphone screen size, and when will “huge” become “big enough?”

4. Social networking integration Calling begat emailing. Emailing begat texting. Texting begat instant messaging. And now Facebook and Twitter messaging are threatening to usurp them all. Facebook, like AOL in the late ‘90s, is almost as big as the rest of the Web itself. Twitter breaks news faster than live TV. Social networking on smartphones is more than apps and links - it’s about system level integration that keeps tweets, tags, alerts and uploads at your fingertips. music, movies and TV shows, share and upload photos and video clips, and access websites, social networks and important documents on-thego. More and more carriers are rolling out 4G LTE. For example, U.S. Cellular announced that more than 58 percent of its customers across the country will have access to 4G LTE by the end of 2012 and 87 percent will have access by the end of 2013. 2. Unlimited data That old saying, “Talk is cheap?” It’s never been truer. Over the past five years we’ve seen mobile voice minutes become a near-free commodity while consumer demand for more and faster mobile data has been on the rise. While truly unlimited data plans are going the way of the dinosaur, most consumers don’t actually need unlimited data. Look for carriers to experiment with ways to offer tiered data plans that base value on the number of bits customers are actually using. 3. Screen size

5. Tablets PCs as we know them may not be dead just yet, but tablets are hot. Consumers are embracing the intuitiveness and portability that tablets offer, and manufacturers are finding ways to pack dual and quad-core processing power into touch-based computers selling for less than $200 in some cases. fitness A HEALTHY PERSON IS SOMETHING TO BE by dennis mason This sure has been an amazing year, so far. And, I’m sure it will get even more amazing as the next few weeks roll by. In spite of the entire social, political, financial, housing and employment mess we’re all in right now, one thing has remained ‘most important.’ That one thing is staying healthy and fit for whatever comes next. It’s not a new idea. It’s always been that way, but has often been obscured by the quest for a ‘better life.’ As a professional health and fitness trainer, coach and athlete for over 30 years, I have witnessed many highs and lows in the overall health and fitness levels of our people. Of course, I realize that it’s hard to think about health when costs are going up and income is going down. But, now it’s more important than ever before to get back to the ‘basics of life.’ It’s the simple law of the jungle, stating once again that “only the strong survive.” No doubts there; it’s true. The main problem standing in our way to better health is the huge amount of conflicting information delivered to us daily over the internet, television, radio, print and word of mouth. This makes everything all the more confusing. To top it all off, most of that information comes in the form of advertisements that are designed solely to ‘sell you something.’ As the weeks and months move on, I will present information to help you make better, wiser and healthier choices regarding your body’s good health and fitness. But, for now I will simply say that you have the power to care for your body in the best way possible. You alone must do it, for no one else can do it for you. You must decide how you want to live your life. You are the ‘artist’ and ‘caretaker’ of your own body/mind creation from Spirit. Listen to your body…it knows best what it needs and will tell you so. But, you must pay attention. What works well for others, may not work for you. Use good judgment based on your knowledge and experience. Take the time to learn what you need to learn. If you need help getting started or have any questions, you may contact me by email at the address below, or just visit my web site at: www.dennismasonfitness.com. fashion The guy’s guide to clothes

5 essentials that look good and feel great jeans, but that doesn’t have to mean spending a bundle. Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. jeans come in popular styles like regular, relaxed, loose, and straight, and are available at Walmart for less than $20. Sewn from premium, heavy-weight denim for exceptional durability, each pair of jeans is detailed with vintage-inspired finishes, reinforced stitching, and metal rivets for long lasting style.

(BPT) - When it comes to clothes, most guys seek out comfort before style. Rather than shopping for clothing, time is better spent watching the game or enjoying the outdoors. The good news is the all-American man can easily look great by building his wardrobe with a couple key pieces that blend both fashion and function. Here are five wardrobe essentials that every American man should have in his closet:

sleeve, collared shirt provides a timeless look that is appropriate for just about anything - from a casual Sunday at home to a meeting at the office to a day at the golf course. Widely available in every color and style of stripes, purchasing one or multiple polo shirts will give you a go-to option for any event.

Flannel - Long gone are the days when flannels were just for lumberjacks; today’s men’s flannels blend utility and fashion for a comfortable, complementing look. Flannels come in a variety of materials, from rugged wool perfect for outdoor projects on cool fall days, to thinner cotton options that work great for a business-casual work environment. Stocking your closet with a flannel or two adds masculine sophistication to a wardrobe and is perfect for men of all shapes and sizes. Polo shirt - Perhaps no shirt is more versatile than the classic polo shirt. The short

White dress shirt - A crisp white dress shirt is a versatile piece of clothing that is a closet-essential for men. Wear it tucked in with dress pants for a formal look, or untucked with jeans for a casual yet refined appearance. A quality dress shirt will serve its purpose years, but it’s important to find the right size. If you’re unsure of your measurements, visit a tailor or ask someone at a department store to measure you. It only takes a few minutes and will help you get a shirt that complements your body shape perfectly. Hat - A beloved hat is a great way to add a piece of your personality to any outfit. Some men prefer the classic baseball hat with their favorite team’s logo. The fedora has recently made a comeback and is a good choice if you want to add a hip element to your wardrobe - classic colors like white or brown match anything. Finally, as the weather cools, a knit hat in a rich red or forest green is perfect for staying warm when tackling outdoor projects or on a morning commute.

Quality jeans - Jeans were made with men in mind - they look great, they are durable, and are appropriate to wear year round. Every man should have a good pair of

These five basic wardrobe essentials are great for the man who wants to look good by wearing clothes that are comfortable and classic. From denim jeans to a soft flannel, a few new pieces will enhance any man’s closet and provide options for any of life’s adventures.

8th Annual Palm Springs Modernism Week On Pace to Set Attendance Records New Events Include Pan Am Airline Exhibit, ‘A Mad Men Evening,’ and More Palm Springs, CA (January 2, 2013) – Palm Springs Modernism Week, happening February 14- 24, 2013, is poised to surpass previous attendance levels. Modernism Week events will take place in various locations throughout Palm Springs and other desert cities. Modernism was a popular design aesthetic, originating in the 1950s and 60s, which typified clean, simple lines and celebrated elegant informality, and which came to define desert modernism as a sought-after architectural genre. Modernism Week is one of the country’s most popular annual events for architects, modernism aficionados, art and design style mavens, mid-century modern culture hounds, and retro fun fanatics. Over the last several years, attendance has grown to an estimated 35,000 people in 2012. “Based on the enormous enthusiasm we have seen for months in advance, early indications are that 2013 will bigger and better than ever,” says Jacques Caussin, Board Chairman of Modernism Week. “As early as this past summer, our loyal fans began requesting information about the exciting new events that we’ve scheduled, and we think returning attendees and new visitors alike will be very impressed with the lineup.”
