24. EXPLORE THE MAGIC OF CHOCOLATE The human enjoyment of chocolate dates from before the time of the Olmecs, Mayans, Aztecs, and Incans. More than 3000 years ago, folks in Mexico, Central, and South America discovered the joyous and healthful properties of the cacao plant. Alas, though, most of the things we know as chocolate today are processed so much with sugar and chemicals, that much of the healthy (and delicious) goodness of cacao is lost. Time to return to the past - the true roots of chocolate; time to taste chocolate as it was when Christopher Columbus (one of the first Europeans to every sample the stuff) first had a sip of Aztec liquid chocolate. BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED… BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
The Perfect Gift It sounds so cliché doesn’t it? But that’s what you want to give to every single person on your gift list this year, from your family to your bestie to your neighbor. The Perfect Gift, however, isn’t so perfectly easy to find – especially for that hard-to-buy-for person. So why not wrap up a book? Why not wrap up one of these…? Let’s start with the littlest reader, and a book that’s sweet as can be: “Stella Brings the Family” by Miriam B. Schiffer, illustrated by Holly Clifton-Brown. It’s the story of a little girl whose school is having a Mother’s Day event. Problem is, Stella has two daddies. This book is the Perfect Gift for the 3-to-6-year-old whose school isn’t quite as up-to-the-minute as it could be. There are a lot of options for teen readers; I particularly liked “Alice + Freda Forever: A Murder in Memphis” by Alexis Coe, illustrations by Sally Klann. Based on a real historic event, this is the story of two girls who fell in love – one more so than the other. It’s a little scandalous, a lot readable and The Perfect Gift for the girl who loves a delicious story. Also look for “This Book is Gay” by James Dawson, an easy-toread book that will answer a lot of questions your teen may have. The nice thing about this book is that it’s appropriate for any kid ages 13 and up. It’s The Perfect Gift for teens and their allies who are questioning.
The possibilities are almost endless for the adult on your list, but I think there are two positively can’t-miss authors … First, “A History of Loneliness” by John Boyne is the story of a priest who’s gone through seminary with a man he considers a friend. There’s something about his friend that isn’t right, however, but he can’t quite figure out what it is. This is The Perfect Gift: a meandering book, quietly thoughtful, with a gently building tension that gets squirmier and squirmier until the pinnacle of the story pounces. And if you want to give two Perfect Gifts, wrap up Boyne’s “The Absolutist,” which is a World War I tale of unrequited love. My best advice: buy two copies and read one yourself. Your giftee is going to be desperate for someone to discuss these books with…. I’ll also read anything by Bob Morris. His “Assisted Loving” from a few years ago – a book of memories of his widowed father, dating, and falling in love - was a scream, both in laughter and in poignancy. This year, Morris wrote about his mother in “Bobby Wonderful,” and it’s another laugh / cry book (mostly the latter) because he writes about how much she loved him and how much he misses her now. It’s the Perfect Gift for anyone who’s ever had a Mom. So there you are: gift ideas for every hard-to-buy-for person you know. And, of course, if these ideas don’t quite work, you can throw yourself at the mercy of the kind bookstore worker, who knows the exact Perfect Gift you need. Season’s Readings!

Q&A
RICKY REBEL AIMS TO BE KING OF QUEENS BY SEAN O’FLARRETY
Before breaking out in the big leagues as the front man of the nineties boy band, No Authority, Ricky Rebel remembers growing up in Hollywood and being forced to hide his true self. “So many casting directors wouldn’t cast me because they saw me as too effeminate,” he explains. “They would tell my agent, “he’s talented but he needs to act more like a typical boy. “It pissed me off,” he says now. Still, in order to get into his music group, Rebel relented and became the boy Hollywood wanted him to be. He says beneath the façade, though, a spark was lit. “Deep down I thought how one day, I was going to be more successful than anyone’s ever dreamed of… and by just being myself.” That’s where he is today. As Ricky Rebel, the young singer is proud to be an equal mix of masculine and feminine energy. “I’m ‘The New Alpha’,” he laughs. He sings about it in “Star”, his brand new dance track that he just premiered at Palm Springs Pride. You’ve become a staple of Palm Springs Pride. This was my third time performing! I love the Palm Springs crowd. They get into my show like no one else. They’re wild and fun. You weren’t always an out and proud artist. What was it like having to hide your true self in your No Authority days? It was hard. I was afraid that if people found out I was gay, that somehow, we would get dropped from the label and my career would be over. I was very self-conscious back then. We went through media training to appear as straight as possible and one producer even locked me in a sound booth and read bible scriptures to me, telling me that I was going to hell for being gay and that I would never make it if people found out who I really was. it’s our responsibility to be role models to these kids. Have things changed for out artists today? There are still actors out there who are famous as hell and wouldn’t dream of coming out of the closet out of fear that their careers would be over. Those guys are cowards. They’re not doing the community any good by hiding and lying about who they are and who they choose to love. There are kids out there committing suicide everyday because they hate themselves for being gay and
16 THESTANDARDPS.COM
Are boy banders still forced to remain closeted? Absolutely. There’s no doubt in my mind that one or more of the One Direction boys might be gay or has had flings with other guys. Justin Bieber has probably had some hot nights with guys. If you’re that hot and that cute you’re bound to be attracted to other hot, cute guys. In fact, I know people who are in the closet, actors and boy
banders that I’ve hooked up with. It’s sad to me that they don’t have the courage to come out and be honest about who they are. The person you love is a huge part of your life. Imagine not ever being able to talk about your relationship to anyone or in an interview. I couldn’t live like that. It’s pathetic. What toll did staying in the closet have on you? I was afraid to meet with fans. I didn’t want them to get too close and personal to me because I was afraid they would find me out. It wasn’t until I met my girlfriend at the time who taught me that I am beautiful no matter who it is that I choose to love. She really taught me to explore my sexuality. When you finally did come out, you did so with a bang! Where did Ricky Rebel come from? Rebel was a role that I created because I was sick and tired of making music that I didn’t produce myself. I was sick and tired of being what producers and managers wanted me to be. I rebelled and created this character who isn’t afraid to share his art. I had to create Ricky Rebel to get over my protectionist side that kept me from sharing my music and my performances. I set out to be the male version of Madonna and that’s what I am going to do. I’m not as loud or abrasive as Madonna but I am talented, driven, and intense like her. You were once signed to her Maverick label. Yes, and she’s had a huge affect on me since then. Is it about making it as a star on your own terms? Yes. And that’s what my song is about too. Everybody has the ability to be their version of a star. We need people surrounding us
that can help bring out our best. We all have the potential to shine bright by being authentic with who we are and what we want. My best advice is to people is to never stray from your initial dream. People are going to try to sway you. Where are things for you today? Things have dramatically changed. Honestly, I knew this would happen. I used to tell people, don’t worry this whole gay thing will not be my weakness. In fact, one day it’s going to be my biggest strength. That’s exactly what has happened for me. People can relate to the struggle and the world is coming together to create possibility were there previously was none. Tis the season of thanks. What are you most thankful for today? I’m thankful for my health, my supportive family, my new nephew, my loving and intelligent fiancé, my executive producer David Keeton, my strong PR team and all of the many things that the Rebel Mafia & I have accomplished this year. Have you achieved everything you wanted? No. I want to play the biggest stages in the world. I want stadium size FIFA World Cup type stages. Massive! What’s your message to fans? Rebel the darkness and shine your light. http://rickyrebelrocks.com www.facebook.com/RickyRebelRocks/ twitter.com/rickyrebelrocks

HOLIDAY NOSTALGIA THREE WAYS TO BRING A TOUCH OF NOSTALGIA TO MODERN HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS Fond memories of holidays past are one of the many gifts of the seasons, and it turns out a bit of nostalgia is good for you. It can make you feel less lonely, bored or anxious, and more generous, tolerant and happy, according to a New York Times report on nostalgia research. You don’t need research to know that remembering good times makes you feel good. This holiday season, why not foster a sense of nostalgia. Here are three ways to bring some of the best things about bygone holidays back into modern holiday celebrations. DECORATING WITH A TOUCH OF YESTERYEAR It’s easy to evoke a sense of nostalgia with holiday decor. Retail and specialty stores carry a variety of decorations that evoke the look of past decades, from the roaring ‘20s to the sparkly ‘70s and beyond. Choose light strands with larger bulbs to mimic the look your grandparents enjoyed in the 1950s, or chandelier bubble lights for a ‘60s or ‘70s flare. Glass ornaments in intricate shapes also recall an older era, as do tabletop ceramic trees with mini lights. A simple online search will yield many nostalgic decorating options, or you can often find vintage pieces at yard sales and flea markets. The important thing is to look for items that remind you of a favorite holiday memory. FINDING NOSTALGIA IN FAVORITE HOLIDAY FOODS Everyone has that time-honored family recipe that is the showpiece of holiday feasting. Certain foods and flavors, like peppermint candy canes, turkey with all the trimmings, pineappletopped ham, and frosted sugar cookies are delicious must haves for holiday celebrations. If it’s been a while since you made your family favorite, dust off the recipe this year. On the other hand, you can try something that’s both new and nostalgic at the same time, like this recipe for Goji Ginger Popcorn Balls from Frontier Co-op: GOJI GINGER POPCORN BALLS 2 tablespoons coconut oil 1/3 cup organic popcorn kernels 1/2 cup Organic Crystalized Ginger, diced into small pieces 1/2 cup Goji Berries 1/2 cup brown rice syrup 1/2 cup sunflower seed butter
20 THESTANDARDPS.COM
DIRECTIONS: In a large stockpot over medium-high heat, heat coconut oil until melted. Add popcorn kernels and cover pot with lid. Heat popcorn, shaking the pot occasionally, for about 3-5 minutes, until popping slows and the majority of the kernels are popped. Remove from heat. Pour popcorn into a large bowl, removing un-popped kernels. Add crystalized ginger and goji berries. In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, combine brown rice syrup and sunflower seed butter, stirring occasionally. Continue to heat mixture for about 3-4 minutes, until contents are well combined and easily pourable. Pour mixture over popcorn and, using a wooden spoon or your hands, coat popcorn. Lightly wet your hands and form popcorn into 18 3-inch balls. Serve as soon as possible. If desired, substitute non-sweetened or sweetened sunflower seed butter for the unmodified sunflower seed butter, but expect a slightly different consistency and taste. RELIVING MEMORIES WITH MUSIC What holiday party would be complete without festive music playing in the background? While you may love modern holiday tunes, vintage music is a great way to create nostalgia during the holidays. Whether you’re a fan of traditional carols or favor rock reinventions of traditional tunes, music is a great way to create nostalgia at the holidays.Technology has made it easier than ever to find and enjoy music from every era. Why not put together a play list of holiday music that was popular during some of the happiest holiday seasons you remember. Can’t recall what was playing the year you finally got that skateboard you always wanted. Check with your parents - your mom probably remembers! And even if she doesn’t, you’ll have a good time reminiscing together.

EQCA UPDATE
DEFINING SUCCESS BY RICK ZBUR, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF EQUALITY CALIFORNIA How do you define “success?” By one of our measures, it’s the legislative season that just finished. Before California Governor Jerry Brown finally put a cap on his pen on October 11 – the deadline for him to sign bills sent to him by the legislature – he’d signed every piece of legislation sponsored by Equality California in 2015. The final EQCA priority bill signed into law on that day was Senate Bill (SB) 731. Authored by Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) and sponsored by EQCA, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the Transgender Law Center, it keeps transgender kids safe in foster care by requiring social service workers to take their gender identity into account before placing them in a potentially hostile situation. The week before, the governor signed five of our sponsored bills, four of them on one single afternoon. Assembly Bill AB 959, authored by Assembly member David Chiu, requires state health and social services agencies to collect data on sexual orientation and gender identity whenever demographic data is collected. Collecting this data helps address LGBT disparities in health and well-being and determines whether government programs successfully reach those in need. AB 960, also authored by Chiu, updates California’s assisted reproduction laws to recognize intended parents using assisted reproduction, whether or not a medical professional is involved. AB
827, authored by Assembly member Patrick O’Donnell, provides resources and information to aid teachers in identifying and assisting LGBT students in need of support in dealing with bullying or lack of social acceptance. SB 703, authored by Leno, requires contractors doing business with state agencies to offer transgender employees the same healthcare coverage offered to all other workers. And AB 329 updates the state’s sexual health and HIV prevention curriculum to provide instruction that is more up-to-date, comprehensive and inclusive of LGBT people and their families. Earlier in the summer, Governor Brown signed AB 827, which bans discrimination against potential jurors based on gender identity, and in September, the legislature passed Assembly Joint Resolution (AJR) 16, which calls on President Obama to work towards an end to the discriminatory federal blood donation ban on gay and bisexual men. These pieces of legislation all have one thing in common: they all help address some of the numerous disparities still facing our community when compared to the broader population in health, employment, housing and so many other settings. Equality California is committed to the health, well-being and full equality of LGBT Californians. Stay tuned in January as we announce our 2016 legislative package!

LEGALLY SPEAKING
NEW IN CALIFORNIA CHOOSING YOUR DAY TO DIE BY CHRISTOPHER HERITAGE
Governor Jerry Brown thought long and hard about the moral principles involved in the ”Right to Die” legislation that was recently passed and brought to his desk by California’s State Legislature. On the one hand, suicide is an act condemned by many religions. Assistance with suicide by medical doctors is considered by some to contradict a physician’s oath to do no harm. Patients might be pressured by family or others to end life to avoid the high cost of palliative care. On the other hand, for the terminally ill, in severe pain and with a very short time to live, suicide can be the only way to die with dignity and on their own terms. Being forced to suffer to the very end, against one’s own wishes, is surely cruel and inhumane. And doctors have an ethical responsibility to relieve suffering, not prolong it. Assisting a rational suicide is an act of compassion and decency, and recognizes that it is the patient’s right, not the doctor’s or family’s right, to choose how and when that person should cease living. Governor Brown signed the new law, stating, “In the end, I was left to reflect on what I would want in the face of my own death. I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill”. The law cannot take effect until 90 days after the legislature ends its special session on healthcare, likely sometime in Spring, 2016, and will remain in force for 10 years, during which the law’s effects will be studied. The legislature can amend, extend or renew it during that period if it is working well. There are now 5 states offering the right to die as an option in end of life care. California’s law is modeled after an Oregon law, which went into effect in 1997 and has been safely and effectively implemented through the years. With strong safeguards in place, terminally ill patients make voluntary, informed decisions, and there is no evidence of exploitation. In Oregon so far, over 1,100 people have obtained life-ending prescriptions and around 750 have used them. HERE ARE SOME OF THE PROVISIONS OF CALIFORNIA’S NEW LAW: Terminally ill patients who are California residents 18 years old

or older, have six months or less to live, and are mentally competent to make informed health care decisions, as certified by two doctors, may choose to end their lives by taking lethal doses of physicianprescribed drugs. Patients must make two oral requests 15 days apart and one written request to a physician for assisted death. All requests must be witnessed, received directly by the physician, and patients must be able to self-administer the drugs. A patient must be fully informed of the medical diagnosis and prognosis; the potential risks associated with taking the drug to be prescribed; the probable result of taking that drug; and that the patient may choose not to obtain the drug, or may obtain it and choose not to ingest it. A physician must inform the patient of feasible alternatives to ending life, such as comfort care, hospice care, palliative care, and pain control. A patient may rescind a request at any time and in any manner. A physician will offer the patient a specific opportunity to do so at the end of the 15-day waiting period following the patient’s initial oral request to participate.
A physician is not required to be present when the patient ingests the drug, but is not prohibited from being there. The physician is not permitted to administer the drug to the patient. The law does not authorize a physician or any other person to end a patient’s life by lethal injection, mercy killing or active euthanasia. Action taken in accordance with this law specifically does not constitute suicide, assisted suicide, homicide or elder abuse. Participation is voluntary for all physicians, pharmacists, hospital and other health care providers. No one is required to provide prescriptions for lethal drugs to a qualified patient. Physicians may not be subject to any actions or penalties whether they choose to assist or not to assist a patient who requests this option. Under this law, it is a felony to knowingly pressure or coerce a patient into making end of life requests, to forge requests, or to conceal or destroy a patient’s withdrawal or rescission of a request. The patient must personally make the request. No power of attorney, health care directive, conservator, health care agent or any other legally recognized health care decision maker could make a request on behalf of the patient. The sale, issuance or rates charged for any life, health, annuity policy, health care service plan or health benefit plan may not be conditioned upon or affected by a patient’s making or rescinding a request for an aid-in-dying drug. The self-administration of the drug is not suicide, and the effect upon a life, health or annuity policy is that of a natural death from the underlying disease. The law establishes compliance documentation and reporting requirements for physicians and pharmacists. The State Department of Public Health must collect and review the information, and post annual statistical reports to its internet web site. All information is confidential and fully protects the privacy of patients, their families and medical providers.

FITNESS TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR BODY BY REVEREND DENNIS MASON, B.F.A., C.P.T.
When you were born there was one and only one most important thing that you must do; and that was to Take Good Care Of Your Body. It was created for you and you alone. It is a custom made vessel to serve you for an entire lifetime. In the last four decades of my career I have been totally amazed at how many of you have failed to abide by the one task you were given by the Creator, God, Universe, Allah, Spirit or whatever you prefer to call “The One.” Taking care of your health in the form of fresh, organic (God made) foods, healthy lifestyle habits, daily productive exercise, and even enlisting the services of a personal fitness trainer or coach where needed, is using your brain for a positive result. Sadly, that’s where the whining and wailings begin to emerge regarding “inconvenience” or “expense”. I call that the “yeah- but” syndrome. See, that “special vacation” to the tropics, France or some other exotic port of call never seems to generate any kind of whining. Additionally, winks and nods are freely given to such costly purchases as luxury homes, autos, boats, and those “oh so beloved smart phones.” These and many other extravagances have nothing to do with good health and fitness what so ever, yet they seem to get “top billing” almost all the time. So, What’s Wrong With This Picture? What’s wrong is that we live in a society that places monumental importance on capital gains, increased gross profits, corporate management of our personal lives, and to quote a phrase from the 1930’s: “Better living through chemistry.” Corporations rule the media and as such, give us a distorted view of the world, not as it is, but rather how we are wanted to perceive it. We are bombarded daily with images of how we are to look and act, what to wear and do, how we should live, and what we are expected to eat and drink. And yes, even what to think. Somehow, in the midst of all of this, REAL health and fitness plays second fiddle to corporations that make obscene profits over our ill health. For example, do you remember the last major disease that was CURED? If you guessed Polio, you were right. It was back in the 1950’s. Since that time, nearly all major diseases have simply been “managed,” not cured. How can that be? Sixty years have come and gone. We have amazing technology now, but we still can’t seem to cure anything?! Really? So, here’s my point, and it is not intended to be any free medical advice. From my perspective as an athlete, personal fitness trainer, health coach, and fitness author, I know, for the most part, our bodies
have the amazing ability to self-cleanse and heal, given a fair chance. The healthier you stay by being physically active, eating whole, natural, organic foods, and drinking pure unadulterated water, the better off you are, and the healthier you will be. Think back to your parents and/or grand parents’ time, compare that to today, and you will see what has transpired with respect to health and fitness. WELLNESS
THE LOUDER THEY SCREAM, THE MORE HOMO THEY ARE! BY DR. KENNETH TOTH, BA, MAT, DC, RN, CPT Just as many, many of us clear-thinking, logical, and scientific folks have been saying for years, there now exists irrefutable scientific evidence that is valid and predictable and which proves, once and for all, that those males out there who express intense dislike or even hatred for gay men are actually, themselves, not exactly straight. Period. End of report. The Harvard [University] Center for Brain Science and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) have together completed an exhaustive double-blind (the gold standard, remember?) research study on homosexuality over a five year period involving almost five thousand males. Furthermore, the conclusion of this high-powered scientific study has been accepted and deemed to be “scientifically irrefutable” by the APA (American Psychological Association). It doesn’t get more scientific than that! There is no more room for any further obfuscating debate by anyone unless they wish to advertise their own homosexuality or compare the relative depths of their closets. In the Harvard/MIT research study, the levels of brain activity and physical arousal demonstrated by the test subjects who most disliked LGBT people were always sufficient to demonstrate a desire for same sex intimacy. Not to belabor the point, but this type of research (although perhaps not previously carried out with such an exceedingly high level of technological and scientific sophistication by two of our most prestigious academic institutions and expert scientists in our country) has been going on for years and pointing in the same direction. However, it has, in my opinion, pretty much fallen on a lot of deaf ears. Dare we venture to extrapolate on the latest findings and even suggest that our country is now being led by a rather large number of closeted homosexuals, especially on one particular side of the aisle? I can already hear the ba wa wa of a certain media outlet attempting to discredit the Harvard/MIT findings by citing ridiculously incorrect “analogies” that are really not analogies at all, unless the viewer happens to be stupid and likes to scream from rooftops that the so-called gay agenda is trying to ruin the country…again. Might those be the type of folks who insist that it is preferable to be divorced and married at least four times and have illegitimate offspring than to recognize U.S. Supreme Court approved gay marriage? Then there might also be those who prefer to pick and choose the junk “science” that they claim supports their homophobic,
bigoted, and hateful stance. And, glory be, if that doesn’t work, they can always pull out the old tried and not-so-true bulwark of religious interpretation against homosexuals and the evils that they are purported to be busily perpetrating upon the entire populous twenty-four hours a day. Obviously, those folks are not very well educated or informed either, or they would be too embarrassed to even try to hide behind such a flimsily constructed “defense” of socalled morality. Incidentally, there is other quite interesting research that shows that non-religious folks actually possess a greater degree of morality than religious folks. I guess they wouldn’t be too interested in that research either. So, the next time you see some nattily dressed homophobe (have you noticed their penchant for pink and lavender neckties?) railing away on TV, just know that you know who and what they really are and where all that hate is really coming from. A polite question might be: “So, tell me, how long ago did you realize that you too are a homosexual?” As Shakespeare, the bard of merry old England, put it, “Me thinks thou dost protest too much.” A. E. Housman had the last word in A Shropshire Lad: “Oh, ‘tis true, ‘tis true.” Dr. Kenneth Toth, BA, MAT, DC, RN, CPT holds multiple degrees and credentials as a Science Educator, Chiropractor, Registered Nurse, and Personal Trainer. He is currently limiting his professional activities to Personal Training / Nutritional Coaching, and is accepting new clients exclusively at World Gym Palm Springs. THE AMAZON TRAIL
GEN FUTURE BY LEE LYNCH
One reason I’ve been writing all these years has to do with helping us feel good about ourselves. I’d like to think the cultural work that’s proliferated from the latter half of the twentieth century through today has contributed to building our strength so we could accomplish all we have. If the pendulum of history swings against us like a wrecking ball from the future, we’ll need the writing, the photographs, the women’s music—to stay strong, to be queer strong, just as we need it now. But will our stories be available twenty, fifty, a hundred years from now? I believe they should be, but hadn’t thought much about it until a discussion I had with K.G. McGregor, popular author and President, Board of Trustees, Lambda Literary Foundation. And then I thought, yeah, of course we should do some planning for a far away day when, who knows, we may be outlawed again. McGregor pointed out that our book rights would disappear into the ether (not the Ethernet) unless we plan now to conserve them. We all need literary (or artistic, etc.) executors devoted to our queer arts, who will ensure that our heritage is sustained. But we need to do something besides name executors in our wills. What instructions should I give the women to whom I’ve entrusted my life’s work? Is it possible for our art to have meaning decades from today? Even now, well before they come out, kids are learning skills like coding. They play Blockly games and CodeCombat. They don’t turn pages; they swipe while reading. Their ear buds pipe in stories read by professionals and enhanced with music. If there’s something they don’t know, they say, “OK, Google,” and Google gives them their choice of thousands of answers. Their brains will be wired very differently from ours. Meanwhile, back on planet early 21st century, we writers are working our buns off to create a gay literature. Will it have any relevance at all to eventual readers? What can we do to make it relevant? The same goes for art, drama, music. Will hip-hop resonate with kids who generate music—lyrics, melodies, voices, and instruments— electronically? What will happen to tactile sculpture when an artist can create using a 3D printer? Is it even our responsibility to write for the readers of 2035? Did Thomas Hardy or Jane Austen worry about such things? I worry plugged in people may lose touch with, say, the romance of a romance novel. Will they care if the butler did it or the spy comes in
from the cold? As a general fiction writer whose heart is invested in portraying realistic lesbians and gay men, who am I speaking to in the future other than herstorians? I don’t have the answers. Lambda, for one, is working on our legacy. The rest of us, our gay attorneys, librarians, archivists, readers, historians, and organizations will have ideas. There are gay archives all over the world. Are they equipped to do anything other than collect and make available what’s already out there? My papers to date are at a university, but there’s no money to catalogue or organize them. The library depends on volunteers to do the work. Money is going to be essential to house, feed and defend the heritage we leave. Meanwhile, in Washington, who knows what the power struggles may do to erode all the progress we’ve seen. I have been saddled with the temperament of a pessimist and see shadows of ISIS in our right wing fundamentalists. The U.S. hasn’t been able to solve the dire problems of racism and economic inequality. The House majority leader has been toppled from office by right wing fundamentalists and his probable successor has withdrawn for reasons I fear to consider. What will the Supreme Court look like if the Tea Party of 2015 has its way? While the artists paint, the poets rhyme, the actors bring to life plays to tell our stories, all of us need to consider how we will bridge to our queer heirs. Can we pass down the tradition of mentoring new talent as the Golden Crown Literary Society is doing? Can we encourage little coders to create programs capable of securely capturing their legacy before the kids are even conscious of its importance to their freedom? It’s a legacy we may have created for ourselves, but it would behoove us to pass it on.

TALKING TURKEY FOR THE THANKSGIVING TABLE Without a doubt the iconic American bird, the turkey, majorly influences all things Thanksgiving, right down to our tabletop décor. It’s a colorful history, nearly as old as the holiday itself. When Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving an official holiday back in 1863, English potters seized the opportunity to target the growing American market by producing turkey-themed dinner plates and platters. These ingenious designers generally took an existing design and replaced the center with a turkey motif to create those first Thanksgiving patterns. Manufacturers such as Spode, Mason’s and Wood & Sons used their colorful transferware patterns to start a new holiday tradition. “Even today manufacturers are creating design options for consumers by producing Thanksgiving or turkey-themed accent plates to mix and match with their everyday dinnerware,” says Robin Long, vice-president of product marketing for tableware giant Replacements, Ltd. “You’ll find colors and motifs to fit all tastes and lifestyles, from the very traditional to a more modern aesthetic. If someone wants more than just an accent plate, there are so many fantastic collections that include all piece types, from plates to bowls to platters.” In fact, Replacements’ most popular Thanksgiving pattern, His Majesty by Johnson Brothers, started as an accent plate in the Friendly Village pattern. Demand proved so great for this particular motif, the English manufacturer turned the proud Tom Turkey-adorned plate into its own pattern. Perhaps just as popular as the turkey pattern this season is the turkey platter. These large platters are not only highly collectible; they’re becoming the entertaining centerpiece for seasonal gatherings. “You can find a turkey platter that will blend well with any
china pattern, from the very old to the very new,” says designer Julie Robbins. “Turkey platters aren’t necessarily bird-themed; you’ll find them in designs ranging from florals to even scenic vistas. I suggest starting a wonderful family tradition of dedicating a special platter for your Thanksgiving turkey and making it the centerpiece of your holiday gathering.” Turkey platters aren’t only fun, some are also functional. Lenox and several other manufacturers produce turkey-shaped platters and other autumn themed serving pieces in alternative metal serve ware. This special alloy maintains a constant temperature to keep foods warm or cold when heated or chilled. Whether you’re planning a huge buffet or an intimate dinner with close family and friends, Robbins says the color trends for Thanksgiving entertaining remain a bright version of fall: strong oranges, sages and brilliant turquoises. Both individual candles and groupings of candles are popular for the Thanksgiving tabletop. Burlap is also a hot trend for table runners or place settings. In addition, if Tom Turkey isn’t the right design element for your table, Robbins says you can still create a seasonal feel, minus the bird. “You can use fall leaf or even woodland patterns to create a classic Thanksgiving table without going with a turkey motif. Beautiful classic fruit patterns give your table that horn of plenty flair.” Robbins suggests tying this look together by combining whole spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg with natural elements like nuts, small pumpkins, fall fruits and colorful leaves to create a cornucopiatype centerpiece.

ART VIEW
TIMOTHY KROE Timothy Kroe’s art, although possessing different subject matters that range from the human form, to deep forests, (and some creatures between) all hold a stark contrast between the light and darkness. There are flecks of gold, an iridescent color that only reflects when light catches it, making each piece come alive throughout the day. Pearlescent ivory gleams like moonbeams, and other colors shimmer in interference that the digital or printed medium cannot possibly replicate. The commonalities of each of his paintings are greater than their differences. Currently he’s working on a dreamy series of forests: “The Forest Dreaming of Me, or am I Dreaming the Forest?” pictured here. It is a slight departure, the darkness in his “Deep Forests” work being replaced with light foggy airs, although both have a quality of “otherworldliness.” Thick paint applied with a palette knife often replaces the brush, giving his pieces a texture that fully grounds the work. A self-taught artist, Timothy graduated from Antioch University with a Bachelor of Arts with a focus of Archetypal Imagery, “the meat and potatoes” of his work he often says. Having spent a few years in Seattle, Washington, (which he credits for his love of deep forests) he moved to Palm Springs, California in 2000, following his dreams of the desert. Those dreams can be reflected in his “Desert Landscapes” illustrated by his exploration of the Joshua Tree National Park, “a place everyone should see and experience” he says. Timothy has shown throughout the West coast, having exhibits in Seattle, San Francisco, and Portland Oregon with pieces in Los Angeles, San Diego along with many shows in Palm Springs, and with global clients as far afield as Australia. He has a deep spiritual connection to his work, saying: “Painting is my church, it’s where I connect with the Divine.” His “Sacred Visions,” the title of his early pieces, includes a conscious of human kind’s connection to the Earth, and how we act as the caretakers of it. As an exceptional creative he can also be found writing and currently has three un-published novels completed. Timothy acknowledges that there is a hint of escapism to his creativity and has exciting larger things planned for the future – watch this space!
