NEWSWORTHY HEADLINES OF 2015 JAN U.S. Supreme Court Declines to Hear Louisiana Same-Sex Marriage Case (Jan. 12): The U.S. Supreme Court decides not to hear a challenge to Louisiana’s ban on same-sex marriage. The court declines to hear the case while it is deciding whether or not to look at the issue of same-sex marriage again. There are four other cases concerning same-sex marriage that the court can choose to hear this week. Those cases concern samesex marriage bans in Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The decisions to hear one or more of the cases is significant because if the court does take them on, it will then issue a ruling that will determine if the 14 remaining state bans are struck down.

Denmark Sees Worst Terrorist Attack in Thirty Years (Feb. 14): Two people are killed in two attacks. In the first attack, a gunman fires into a cafe where Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks is speaking. The gunman escapes, setting off a manhunt by police. (Feb. 15): Hours later, another attack happens outside a synagogue. The two shootings are the worst terrorist attack in Denmark since the July 22, 1985 bombings of the Great Synagogue and the Northwest Orient airlines office in Copenhagen, which killed one person and injured twenty-six. MAR Israeli Prime Minister Makes Controversial Speech to U.S. Congress (Mar. 3): Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addresses Congress in an effort to sway the Obama administration against negotiating with Iran. COMING OUT IN 2015 2015 has been a banner year for LGBT individuals in a lot of ways, and though we have much more work ahead of us, here is a short list of the celebrities who are out and proud and ready to help the cause — as of this year! Their coming out will give hope and courage to those who still live in fear and the confines of the closet. We applaud those who took the proverbial leap out of the closet in 2015.

KEEGAN HIRST (RUGBY LEAGUE PLAYER) Keegan Hirst became the first British rugby league player to come out in August. ‘At first I couldn’t even say “I’m gay” in my head, let alone out loud. Now I feel like I’m letting out a long breath that I’ve held in for a long time,’ he told the Sunday Mirror. ‘I had a wife and kids. I’ve been a builder, doorman, worked in factories – I play rugby. I tick every macho box. How could I be gay? He added: ‘The only time I felt free of the torment was when I stepped on the rugby pitch. Now I feel free.’ DAVID DENSON (BASEBALL PLAYER) David Denson is the first baseball player affiliated with the MLB to come out as gay. ‘Talking with my teammates, they gave me the confidence I needed, coming out to them,’ Denson told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said to the newspaper. ‘They said, “You’re still our teammate. You’re still our brother. We kind of had an idea, but your sexuality has nothing to do with your ability. You’re still a ballplayer at the end of the day. We don’t treat you any different. We’ve got your back.”

MATT CAGE (WRESTLER) Pro wrestler ‘Money’ Matt Cage came out by apologizing to women everywhere. ‘Sorry, ladies. I’m officially pulling myself off of the market. Don’t hate me too bad,’ he said in a Facebook page. ‘I truly have nothing to hide anymore. I spent the majority of my life lying, hiding and depressed because I felt like I couldn’t truly be who I wanted to be and live freely as I saw fit. I had to act and that’s not me. I, nor anyone else, should have to do that.’ ADAM RIPPON (FIGURE SKATER) US figure skater Adam Rippon came out as gay at the age of 25. ‘‘I want to be a relatable example,’ the skater told US Figure Skating’s official magazine. ‘And I want to say something to the dad out there who might be concerned that his son is a figure skater. I mean look at me; I’m just a normal son from smalltown Pennsylvania. Nothing changed. I’d just like to be a good role model. I’ve been honest with myself the whole time. I worked hard and loved what I did.’ JUSSIE SMOLLETT (ACTOR) Jussie Smollett, who plays gay singersongwriter Jamal on the hit Fox show Empire, came out as gay in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. ‘I say that I don’t talk about my personal life, I’m saying that. But it is in no way to hide or deny who God made me. Ya know?’ he said. ‘My mama knows. My mama likes me a lot,’ Smollett added. ‘And yes I take her to the Sound of Music sing-along every, single year.’

JESS GLYNNE (SINGER) JOEL GREY (ACTOR) Jess Glynne is one of the most successful British female solo artists, tying with Cheryl Fernandez-Versini to have five number-one singles in the UK. She came out as bisexual in May revealing she was still reeling after being broken up with by a girl.

Actor Joel Grey came out as gay at the age of 82. The father of actress Jennifer Grey, who was married to actress Jo Wilder for 24 years, has said he now feels comfortable being known in public as a gay man. ‘I don’t like labels,’ Grey told People magazine. ‘But if you have to put a label on it, I’m a gay man.’

COVER PATRICIA VELÁSQUEZ (MODEL-ACTRESS) Patricia Valásquez, the world’s first Latina supermodel, came out as gay after keeping it a secret for decades. ‘The reaction and support has been phenomenal,’ Velasquez said. ‘There’s never really been a Hispanic woman from my side say, “Yes, I am gay.”‘

NYLE DIMARCO (MODEL/DEAF ACTIVIST) America’s Next Top Model contestant Nyle DiMarco has become the latest celebrity to come out. When asked if he is more into ‘boys or girls’, the series’ first deaf model simply responded ‘fluid’. He also added a link to an Everyday Feminism article about fluid sexuality to make clear any ambiguity.

FATHER KRZYSZTOF OLAF CHARAMSA (PRIEST) HOLLAND TAYLOR (ACTRESS) Before the Synod, the meeting of 300 church leaders at the Vatican to discuss sexuality, Poland priest Krzysztof Charamsa came out as gay and was immediately fired from his position. ‘It’s time for the church to open its eyes about gay Catholics and to understand that the solution it proposes to them – total abstinence from a life of love – is inhuman,’ he told the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, saying he wanted to challenge the Church’s ‘paranoia’. ‘I know that I will have to give up my ministry which is my whole life,’ he added.

The Two and a Half Men star opened up to WNYC on Monday about her sexuality for the first time, where she admitted that talking about being in a relationship with a woman at 72 can be hard. “I feel very very shy of it,” she said. “Most of my relationships have been with women and I don’t like talking about them because I don’t like talking about the politics of it all because I’m not political about it.”

TOP GADGETS OF 2015 MUSE BRAIN HEADBAND Meditation is a millenniumsold practice, but it gets a hightech update with the Muse. This headband monitors your brain waves, and in conjunction with an app, trains you to Zen out. PRYNT On one hand, I find these smartphone-printer gadgets kind of clumsy. On the other, I never would have expected the bulky Fujifilm Instax cameras to be so popular. This lo-fi printer will be entering a Kickstarter soon, so we’ll see what the crowds think of it.

SNAIL W3D It’s sized more like a tablet than a phone but the Snail 3D combines the physical gaming controls of a mobile gaming device (think PlayStation Vita) with a smartphone. HYPR-3 The Hypr-3 is a small, inexpensive mobile payment accessory that turns any Bluetooth-enabled mobile device into a digital wallet that’s secured with 3-factor authentication. Plus, it’s got an open application-programming interface (API), so anyone can create custom apps or integrate into their current ones.

COVER RING While it’s not the One Ring created by the Dark Lord Sauron, this somewhat unwieldy gadget will let you use gestures to control some phone functions. The devices promise to do things like unlock your car door, enable mobile payments, type in mid-air, and any number of other tasks just by waving your finger around. PONO PONO PLAYER This kick started high-resolution audio player starting shipping to backers last year but will go into public distribution in February. The brainchild of musician Neil Young, the $400 (AU$495, £265) betterthan-CD quality player is actually one of the more affordable of the handful that have come out recently.

QUELL For people with chronic pain -- especially if there’s a tendency to become addicted to painkillers -- this calfmounted TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) unit may be a godsend. The company claims Quell can reduce pain from diverse maladies such as sciatica, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and more in as little as 15 minutes.

MOTOROLA SCOUT 5000 It’s almost like a Petcube on four legs: the Scout 5000 is a GPS collar that streams video back to your phone or tablet, as well letting you befuddle your pet with disembodied voice commands.

POLAROID ZIP Following on the popularity of Fujifilm’s Instax printer, Polaroid’s Zip mobile printer takes advantage of its Zink (zero-ink) technology to generate 2x3-inch prints straight from your phone or tablet.

DEVIALET PHANTOM A creator of arguably some of the most beautiful sound gear in the world, Devialet brings its high-end technology into a single, omnidirectional wireless speaker that yes, looks like the Death Star. And really, how can you resist a gadget with something called “Heart Bass Implosion”?

INTEL COMPUTE STICK An Atom-based PC running Windows 8, Intel’s Compute Stick is slightly bigger than a Chromecast and plugs into an HDMI port. It connects to the Web via Wi-Fi. Intriguing.

THE VIVE Even for jaded gadgetfondlers like us, there is still the occasional moment when we realize we’re looking at something that could genuinely change the future. The Vive virtual reality headset developed by Valve (the Half-Life people) and HTC (the phone people) is the most incredible piece of tech we’ve seen this year. The little pits on the surface are sensors that place you inside the virtual space, giving you the feeling that your actual body is inside a game. It’s a bit unnerving but also amazing. Try it the first chance you get.

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED… BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

You have to tell somebody. There’s a secret inside you, one you’ve been keeping far too long and you’re about to burst. You need to talk about it. You need some advice, some perspective. As in the new novel “Naughtier than Nice” by Eric Jerome Dickey, if you don’t talk about this issue soon, it could be the death of you. Last Christmas Eve had been a memorable one for Frankie McBroom, for the wrong reasons: that was the day she spent thinking about how to cancel her wedding to Franklin Carruthers. He’d been her soul mate, her one-and-only… until she discovered that he was a married man. As the eldest McBroom sister, Frankie felt as though she needed to set an example and she fought hard to forget Franklin. She wished her relationship with him had been like what youngest sister Tommie had with her Blue. Or like what middle sister Livvy had with Tony. But no, Frankie had something else altogether. Tommie McBroom felt bad that she was cheating on her fiancé. Down deep, she loved Blue but he’d betrayed her: he knew how much she wanted a family and yet he’d had surgery to prevent it, which proved that he didn’t care about her. Beale Streets, on the other hand, listened to her. Yes, Beale was a few years younger than Tommie, but that didn’t matter when they were making love. The delicate chain surrounding Livvy McBroom-Barrera’s ankle spoke to Livvy of different times, of days when she and Tony were estranged and she first slept with a woman. The charm on the chain reminded her of things she learned, and lovers who disappeared from her life so suddenly. She thought of them often – especially when she and Tony brought another woman to their bed. It was hard to believe that a year had gone by since Frankie caught Franklin in a lie. So much had happened since last Christmas, so much that wasn’t discussed. Tommie’s life was taking a turn. Livvy’s life seemed to be going backwards. And Frankie? She was dealing with a blown-up phone, an acidruined car, bricks through her windows, belongings rearranged in her home. Frankie was dealing with a stalker… So you like a little spice with your Christmas nog? Or maybe some extra pepper in your peppermints? Then “Naughtier than Nice” will make you very jolly. In this somewhat-sequel, author Eric Jerome Dickey made a list of everything you want in a holiday drama – cheating, scandalous

pasts, sex, murder, and light humor – and it’s obviously checked twice to add even more of the above. Although this book can be read as a standalone, readers then get to revisit some of Dickey’s best characters from other novels. His usual themes are mashed-up, and there’s a very nice gotcha or three scattered throughout this book. That, and the fast-moving action, made me ho-ho-ho for this not-so-holiday holiday book and Dickey fans old and new will love it. Just beware: start “Naughtier than Nice” and you’ll just have to tell somebody. “Naughtier than Nice” by Eric Jerome Dickey c.2015, Dutton $25.95 / $33.95 Canada 357 pages

TRANSFORMING THE FASHION MODELING INDUSTRY BY MIKE BAHR

SLAY MODEL GROUP PHOTO CREDIT: PHOTOGRAPHER: GENESIS ILADA

Slay Model Management Throws Down The Gauntlet. It is the first exclusively transgender modeling agency. The agency is working to break down barriers that have prevented trans models from rising to the top echelons of the fashion industry. “It’s time the world recognizes the amazing talent the trans community has to offer,” says founder Cecilio Asuncion, a former film director who entered fashion after his documentary film focusing on transgender issues, What’s the T? won awards at major LGBT film festivals. “We believe one’s gender identity should not be a hindrance to one’s fashion dreams.” While being trans is a pre-requisite for all models on the Slay Model Management roster, it is not a guarantee for being signed with the agency. “We do not sign just anyone,” Asuncion clarifies. “Models must have the right height, measurements and a drive like no other!” He works alongside Genesis Ilada, a make-up artist and photographer whose work has appeared in VOGUE, KIT, DEFURE,

TRASH, BELLO and JUTE Magazines, in scouting new talent. They say they view talent as models first and Trans individuals second. “We’re competing against the world’s top girls. We’re not asking clients to give our models special treatment,” says Llads. Adds Asuncion, “We’re simply saying, if trans models can do the job, let them do the damn job.” He points out that trans models such as Lauren Foster, Caroline Cossey and Tracey Africa have had successful careers for years, appearing in fashion magazines and campaigns. “But they often had to hide who they were in order to secure opportunities. We’re encouraging our models to wear their gender as a badge of honor. We want them to view their uniqueness as an asset that may help them to stand out in a crowded fashion field.” At 12-years-old, Alex is the youngest trans girl on the Slay Model Management board. daughter with Slay because she’s more comfortable with her daughter’s participation in the fashion industry being represented by an exclusively trans agency. Arisce, formerly with Ford Models, is perhaps the most recognizable face on the roster. This month, she is featured in German Vogue. She believes being represented by an agency that consists solely of transgender models frees her from the need to conform to preconceived notions of what a top model should be like. Claudia Charriez echoes Arisce’s sentiments. Having forged a modeling career with stints on America’s Next Top Model and The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency, Charriez is excited to be part of a community who understands and supports one another in an industry that still considers them outsiders. 2015 has been a year of progress for the trans community with many exciting breakthroughs. There was the reality show devoted to Caitlyn Jenner’s life and transition. Laverne Cox of Orange Is the New Black on the cover of Time Magazine. And the recent hire of Raffi Freedman-Gurspan, the first transgender appointee in the White House. But Asuncion is quick to draw the line between progress and acceptance. “Trans issues are being talked about more but it’s too early to assume it’s all better.” In his view, he’ll believe real change has been made the day a trans model appears in an ad for Target or Wal-Mart. “The day I see a trans model pushing a shopping cart in a campaign for a major retailer - and no one bats an eye - is the day I will know my work is done.” Visit http://www.slaymodels.com

HOLIDAY GIFTS FOR THE DANCE FLOOR BY JIMMY NEWSUM

So you’re planning your annual holiday bash and you’re still not sure what new tunes to cue up for the big celebration? Rest assured, our friends at Nexus Dance Radio have ya covered with the season’s hottest beats. In fact, we’re worried their list of party tunes may be so hot it might cause your floor to spontaneously combust in an explosion of pure joy and body-moving ecstasy. That’s how good we think it is.

Race is an anthem for all who have fallen victims to cyberbullies and internet trolls. Produced by Steven Phillips, who also produced Mantle’s Satellite Baby album, the song is undeniably catchy. It bathes in a cross-appeal bolstered by Kelly Mantle’s surprisingly impressive vocals and the track’s ’80s pop-synth muscle. Mantle wrote the song after meeting young fans being victimized by kids in

“¡SPICY!” CAZWELL Every so often, a song comes along that is so innovative; it not only gets clubbers to shake their bootays, it changes the shape of the musical landscape. That would describe Cazwell’s latest, an ode to the Latino culo. Pitbull meets MIA in this explosive new party jam, laden with heavy percussion and horns and sharp, lyrical rhymes that are as clever and dirty as you’d expect from Cazwell. Inspired by a guy he was seeing who was passionate in bed but also quick to snap, ¡Spicy! is couched with a hook that is tailor-made for the club, performed by side chick Cherie Lily. So go ahead: shake what you got, turn that crown upside down and relish every deliciously spicy move you make on the dance floor this holiday.

school. In the song, she recounts some of the vicious tweets she has received, including one that called her so ugly, she looked like a burn victim going through chemo. Well, who’s laughing now, troll bitches?

“CALI” RALPHI ROSARIO VS. ASHLEY J Sometimes, Ashley feels like throwing her hands up in the air, as she says in the first line of this dance anthem. And the minute that Ralphi Rosario’s beat kicks in, you will feel exactly the same way. That’s the power of brilliant club music. Ralphi’s infectious vibe – the synthy swooshes and digitized loops - are front and center in Ashley J’s frenzied, high-energy romp about how they do things in California. Let’s just break it down: this track is smoking! It is hard pounding, sweat dripping, non-stop party madness; exactly what dance floors need to keep temps up through winter. Ralphi and Ashley deserve major props for presenting a slickly produced blockbuster that is truly big room dance music at its finest.

“LITHIUM” ATHENA With the passion, aggression, ennui and insouciance that can only come with being implausibly young, the explosive new track from this 17-year old dynamo is an artful blend of pop music with exciting dance elements. It’s about going out at 3 a.m. and partying ‘til the sun comes up; a bit ironic coming from a girl who likely hasn’t stepped foot inside a real dance club yet. It also might strike some as odd that the song is about a drug you can’t actually get high from. Lithium’s a mood stabilizer that turns people into zombies. But that’s not the point! The point is lithium is something some people need, just like letting loose in the club is a drug some other people need. Also, Razor & Guido and Dan De Leon provide remixes that are engineered to make the most inhibited listener lose their mind.

“WERK OUT” ANDRE XCELLENCE You’re not simply encouraged to dance in this new jam, you’re ordered to hit the floor and werk up a sweat. Given the song’s thumping beats that are bouncier than flubber and its ridiculous collision of rapid-fire rap verses and super poppy, husky-voiced lyricism, it’s pretty much impossible to ignore the request. There are several reasons Andre Xcellence has managed to soar above all the other gay rappers that have hit the scene in the last year. For one, his style is cutting edge. Two: he’s not afraid of gimmicks (did you catch his collaboration with Manila Luzon on Ice Cream?). But most importantly, while he may play with his lyrics, he doesn’t his production is serious business. The catchy riffs and heavy bass on “Werk Out” might very well classify Andre’s latest as his greatest.

SPEND THE NIGHT WHERE SINATRA SLEPT Designed by E. Stewart Williams in 1947 for Frank Sinatra and his first wife, Nancy Barbato, the Twin Palms Estate is a spectacular example of mid-century architecture in the heart of Palm Springs. This estate boasts both mid-century style luxury and historical significance with modern amenities. This Palm Springs architectural gem features exquisite period furnishings and infamous piano-shaped swimming pool. Williams also has many other significant projects in the Palm Springs area. The legendary residence was host to some of the valley’s most glamorous parties with Hollywood’s brightest stars of the day. The twin palm trees, located poolside, appropriately name the legendary estate. Frank Sinatra often hoisted his Jack Daniels emblem flag on the flagpole once positioned between the twin palms, which indicated an invite to his Movie Colony neighborhood cronies that revelry and cocktails were in order. The home was also witness to some of Sinatra’s most memorable bouts. One of the most outrageous was when Frank threw then-wife Ava Gardner’s possessions onto the driveway after she appeared at the house in an attempt to catch him with Lana Turner. You can still see the chip in the sink where Frank threw a bottle in a rage. Managed by Beau Monde Villas. LEGALLY SPEAKING

LEMON LAWS WHEN CAR DEALS GO SOUR BY CHRISTOPHER HERITAGE

Did you see those fantastic model year close-outs this fall? Find a one-of-a-kind bargain you couldn’t resist? Get talked into a sweet deal that can’t be beat? Or did you study all the details and negotiate a perfect match for you and your budget at your reputable local automobile dealer? Bringing home a new car is exciting and fun, but once in awhile, it becomes a nightmare. If the rosy glow becomes a frightful hassle, you may have a way out. California has strict “lemon laws” which could protect you from deals gone sour. Lemon laws have a primary goal of forcing manufacturers and car dealerships to live up to their warranties, and promptly and properly correct problems that occur. But there are some car-related problems that are definitely not covered: Dealership fraud – lying to you, cheating you, or failing to disclose important Information (such as accident damage) about your vehicle. Repossession of your car that you believe was illegal or improper. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE PROTECTIONS YOU HAVE: In California, there are roughly 1.8 million new car sales each year. A very tiny percentage of these will turn out to be lemons. The percentage varies widely by manufacturer, and it will pay to check the statistics before you sign off on a deal. It is good to know that there are restrictions on the sale of vehicles returned under the lemon laws. A vehicle must be retitled in the name of the manufacturer, and DMV must inscribe “Lemon Law Buyback” and affix a decal on the vehicle. A “Warranty Buyback Notice” disclosing the warranty problems and repair history must be given to any new transferee. Is my car covered? Yes, if it is a new or used vehicle sold or leased in California that comes with a new car warranty. Cars, pickup

30 THESTANDARDPS.COM

trucks, vans and SUV’s are included, along with the chassis, chassis cab and drive-train of a motor home. The laws cover the duration of the manufacturer’s original warranty period. “Extended warranties” are not usually covered, because they are actually service contracts, not original new car warranties. How do I know it is legally a lemon? A vehicle is presumed to be a lemon if the following criteria are met within 18 months of delivery to the buyer or 18,000 miles on the vehicle’s odometer, whichever comes first: The manufacturer or its agents have made two or more attempts to repair a warranty problem that results in a condition that is likely to cause death or serious bodily injury if the vehicle is driven; The manufacturer or its agents have made four or more attempts to repair the same warranty problem; or The vehicle has been out of service for more than 30 days (not necessarily consecutively) while being repaired for any number of warranty problems; or The problems are covered by the warranty, substantially impair the vehicle’s use, value or safety to the consumer and are not caused by abuse of the vehicle.

If required by the warranty materials or by the owner’s manual, the consumer must directly notify the manufacturer about the problem(s), preferably in writing. The notice must be sent to the address shown in the warranty or owner’s manual. If the above are met, the buyer or lessee is presumed to be entitled to a replacement vehicle or a refund of the purchase price. The manufacturer, however, may claim that the criteria have not been met, and the buyer is not automatically entitled to compensation. Do I need a lawyer? Most lemon law cases do not need to be handled by an attorney. If you have followed the rules, and have carefully documented all of the issues and events, it may be very clear to everyone that your car is a lemon and the manufacturer may agree that you are entitled to your choice of a replacement or refund. The manufacturer can’t require you to accept a replacement instead of a refund. If the problems and documentation are less clear-cut, the manufacturer does not agree that you have met all the requirements, or if you want to file a lawsuit in civil court to obtain damages or additional compensation, then you are required to use a California State-certified arbitration program offered by the manufacturer to resolve the warranty issues first. There is no fee for making a claim under arbitration, and this is a fairly quick, simple and informal way of resolving disputes. The specific steps for filing are described in the manufacturer’s warranty materials. An attorney is not needed for this process. The program assists you and the manufacturer in collecting all the evidence, which will be presented at a hearing. In most cases, the arbitrator will render a decision within 40 days from the date the claim was opened. You and the manufacturer must accept or reject the decision within 30 days. If it is favorable to you and you both accept it, the manufacturer must usually comply with the ruling within 30 days. If you disagree with the arbitrator’s decision, you may reject it. You can continue your attempts to get your car’s problems repaired by the manufacturer; or you can consult an attorney to help you decide what further legal options are available to you.

FITNESS

NATURE KNOWS BEST BY REVEREND DENNIS MASON, B.F.A., C.P.T., UNIVERSAL LIFE CHURCH

Not long ago I received a letter from an on-line reader regarding diet plans. His goals are to add muscle and drop excess body fat. He asked me if he should drop his current diet to bulk up and then switch to another diet to cut. This is an example of what I call “diet thinking.” When I speak or write about my book, The Art of Fitness, I see it as a lifestyle, which includes what we eat. The word diet simply means the food we consume for nourishment. To become trapped within diet thinking infers that more

32 THESTANDARDPS.COM

mental focus be done to fully understand the lifestyle concept. It’s not something to turn on and off as you would a faucet, but rather part of a lifelong commitment to better selfhealth and fitness. The Art is in letting our natural attributes guide us. The old saying “Nature knows best” especially applies when seeking to achieve a happy, healthy and fit lifestyle. As human beings, we perceive everything around us in terms of concrete, abstract, and ethereal

thought. Our five senses are designed to help us get along in the physical world. So, naturally, many of our experiences in life focus on the physical being that is our body. It is our life-long vehicle, our home, our sanctuary, our fortress, our temple, and our best friend. Our body also supports our mind. The mind houses and generates thoughts, feelings, emotions, attitudes and other such abstract perceptions as visual art, music, dance, and our projections of what we hear, see, taste, smell, and touch. For the sake of simplicity, let’s call this

awareness the ego or body-based intellect. However, the mind is quite capable of more than three-dimensional thought. It can grasp and understand such concepts as time, space, movement and change. The mind, as with the physical body, is also genetically unique for each of us. On a much larger scale, we are all ‘part of the whole’ as manifestations of a higher power, which created and continues to create all things. Words that some of us may use to refer to that power are God, Spirit, Universe, and so on. That Power allows the body and the mind to have certain unique qualities called cosmic gifts. Cosmic gifts are those qualities that permit us to excel in certain areas of physical or mental activity. We are all aware of a ‘gifted’ poet, musician, actor, scientist, or spiritual leader. Some names that come to mind are John Steinbeck, John Lennon, Ruth Gordon, Aldous Huxley, Carl Sagan, and the Dahlia Llama. Often times we fail to see our own natural gifts because we are too busy searching for what we THINK are our gifts. How many times have you seen someone at the gym struggling to force their body to do something outside their natural physical parameters? While a properly designed exercise and nutrition program can maximize muscular gains very well, it will not be able to overcome the genetic parameters. Here, the ego is striving to attain that which is unattainable, rather than what can be attained naturally. Simply put, God and Nature know best. How many advertising statements have you seen, read or watched on television that proclaims “We can improve on nature”? The medical and pharmaceutical industry has spawned cottage businesses that offer products, potions and pills that will “give you the body you want almost overnight.” To me, this has to be the height of human arrogance. Does this sound too good to be true? In the

vast majority of cases the answer is ‘yes’ and with the remainder there are spin off or trade off aspects such as unwanted side effects. Consider the concept that we are all part of the ‘grand Scheme’ of things. As such we already have instilled in us the mechanism to know what is right for us. All we have to do is listen to our own ‘inner voice.’ That voice is part of our spiritual link to all that is. It is like a giant regulator to help show us all the possibilities we are each capable of achieving. We can apply this concept to our desire for a happy, healthy and fit lifestyle. For example, if your desire is for only superficial changes in the way you look, then your progress will never be good enough to satisfy that desire. But if you look deep enough within yourself you may see that the natural need of the body to be healthy is predestined. Before structuring your lifestyle change, workout program, or meal plan, make sure you have been true to your inner self with respect to realistic goal setting. Goal setting needs to be given careful consideration with regards to your genetic make-up, your level of dedication to achieve that goal and an accounting of your genuine ‘feelings’ for what we are about to undertake. It is in the Art of staying Fit that shows us that part of the preparation to working on you, is the willingness to allow our natural innate abilities and cosmic gifts to come forward. THE MONSTROUS MINISTERS OF HATE BY DR. KENNETH TOTH, BA, MAT, DC, RN There seems to be an increased frequency these days of so-called men of the cloth, aka “ministers”, who are publicly and hatefully denouncing members of the LGBT community from their pulpits, not only in their backward, insular stomping grounds of the bible belt, but now even in openly political gatherings attended by some seeking the GOP nomination for President of the United States. Yet, very few people seem to be denouncing such vitriol as totally inappropriate and unacceptable. So what gives? In the not-too-many-years-ago medieval days of our country (preceding the Civil Rights Act of the 60’s), we had the same type of gutter snipes condemning African-Americans and Jews in a similar manner and using the Bible as their shield for their hateful, bigoted, and yes, dangerous spew. They were probably then, as well as now, an “inspiration” to the KKK and their sympathizers against these groups of fellow Americans. Today, these individuals seem to get it that folks will no longer put up with their targeting of AfricanAmericans and Jews with such hateful rhetoric. And, thankfully, the media does not tolerate the use of such slurs as the “N” word or the “K” word. I suspect that these kinds of religious leaders have not been rehabilitated, but are just not willing to push the envelope because of hate crimes legislation that is now in place. However, because the GOP led congress refuses to add the LGBT community to the hate crimes legislation, it would seem that such “ministers” seem to feel that they have a pass to continue displaying their internalized homophobia and direct their intense self-hatred at the LGBT community. It would also seem apparent that the offensiveness of these pulpit cowards, literally dripping with internalized homophobia, is a sad commentary on our society at large. These preachers apparently feel that they are superstars to the halt and lame of mind in their audiences…not only in their not-so-sacred sanctuaries and political gatherings, but also in their homes via the media. Have we not been sickened and saddened enough by the African-American church and Jewish synagogue burnings and bombings and shootings, as well as the murders of the Mathew Shepherds, of the not too distant past? So where is the outrage now when these “ministers” who purport to serve Christianity get up in front of the masses holding a Bible in one hand for authority and demand that members of the LGBT community should be rounded up, imprisoned, and yes even put to death simply because they are perceived to be different? Sadly,

I do not remember any member of Congress making any further mention recently of trying to add LGBT people to the umbrella protection of the Hate Crimes Bill. Within the last few weeks, our fair little city of Palm Springs experienced another unprovoked physical attack upon two members of the LGBT community. Was this a hate crime? One would have to conclude that it was based upon the media’s account of the crime and the epithet/slur that was verbally hurled at the victims by the attacker(s) before the physical attack that resulted in serious injuries to both victims. Perhaps the perpetrator(s) derived a depraved sense of “courage” to carry out such vicious deeds from some bigot of the pulpit. We’ll never know for sure. However, because the LGBT community is NOT included in the Hate Crimes Bill, the perpetrator(s) will surely get a lighter sentence if convicted. I am curious about how many leaders of the religious community here in Palm Springs saw fit to discuss the recent attack from their pulpits and condemn the hateful public rhetoric that we have all been hearing from some of their ministerial colleagues, as well as urge their congressional representatives to include LGBT folks in the Hate Crimes Bill? I would hope the answer is: every single one of them.

NUTRITION

DO YOU BELIEVE EVERYTHING IS HEALTHFUL IN A HEALTH FOOD STORE? BY LINDA LARROWE BERGERSEN, MA BOARD-CERTIFIED HOLISTIC NUTRITION CONSULTANT

Sugar-packed yogurts are still crowding their refrigerated cases. I find ‘organic” lemonade, yet it is loaded with refined sugar. Vegetarian burritos are wrapped with refined flour tortillas. To be an informed health-food shopper, it’s mandatory to read the ingredients on the labels, and it’s important to learn the many different names of sugars and hidden negative ingredients. There are so, so many different names for detrimental sugars, it’s mind-boggling. Here’s a list of most sugars that manufacturers like to add to make products irresistible, and maybe to even cover up the negative word, ‘sugar’. These need to be avoided as much as possible, if not completely:

I was shopping in a major “health” food store this week, and it occurred to me just how much of the food provided in that store was really NOT healthful. It’s sad to think of how many people who shop in these stores truly believes anything they buy there is “healthful.” If you were to take out all the items that contain refined flours and refined or artificial sugar, there would not be much left on the shelves. Granted, I have to agree that they do carry more of the foods containing organic ingredients, no GMOs, no dyes or food coloring, less hydrogenated oils, etc.; these stores are part of a movement headed in the right direction, and do attribute to more healthful eating. Yet, the bulk of our everyday foods contain the refined flours and sugars that continue to contribute to disease and obesity alone, and these healthier stores are full of them. There are deli cases filled with the cakes and pastries laced with the same refined ingredients found in the sweets filling the standard bakeries or supermarkets. In fact, within these stores are the bakery sections that look exactly like any other bakery section in markets and sweet shops. Like I mentioned above, they may use less of the detrimental additives, yet are they still using refined flours and sugars? Most likely, yes.

Acesulfame K Potassium Agave Aspartame (Equal, Nutrasweet) Brown Sugar Caramel Corn sweetener Cornstarch Corn syrup Dextrin/Dextrose Fructose Fruit juice Galactose Glucose High fructose corn syrup Lactose Maltodextrin Maltose Rice syrup Saccharin (Sweet’ n Low) Sucralose (Splenda) Sucrose Treacle

I found that many of the so-called healthier brands like to dressup or disguise their ingredients with catchy words such as ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ to help make them sound healthier, yet really are not. A package of cookies showcased on a display table near the checkout lines had this list of ingredients: Natural butter, organic sugar, enriched unbleached flour, brown eggs. NATURAL butter: generally speaking, butter is a natural product; butter is butter, but if it’s from grass-fed, pastured cows, it would be far more nutritious, containing more of the beneficial conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). ORGANIC sugar: a white sugar product, whether it’s organic or not, is still refined sugar, and is one of the most unhealthful foods in our diet because of the processing involved, and basic nutrients expelled. Why bother growing organic sugarcane when all they intend to do with it is refine the heck out of it, making it toxic. ENRICHED UNBLEACHED WHEAT flour: they are using a flour that has been refined, and all the bran and wheat germ has been removed; enriched means to add back in some of the nutrients that have been lost, such as niacin, iron and folic acid to name just a few, yet these added nutrients are generally of lesser quality. Not bleaching the flour is a ‘benevolent’ act on their part and hope to have this recognized. If it were bleached, the flour would have been treated with chlorine gas (oxide), which in turn produces toxins that affect the pancreas. BROWN eggs: there is no difference between white or brown eggs. It’s the pasture-raised eggs that we should be eating for

the most optimum benefit obtainable from commercial eggs; these chickens have a less stressful life, and a healthier diet. And if these eggs listed on the label were pastured, that word for sure would be highlighted instead of the word ‘brown’. GLUTEN-FREE is a big buzzword these days, and not only the health food stores, but all supermarkets are filling shelves with such products. However, if you read the ingredients on the label, it may be found that they are not so healthful. To get on the bandwagon of high-selling glutenfree products, many manufacturers are filling them with the cheaper ingredients, such as (white) rice flour, corn flour, soy flour, cornstarch, potato starch, plus the white refined or artificial sugars and sweeteners. LOOK FOR THE BETTER FLOURS SUCH AS: Brown rice, Organic corn flour, Arrowroot, Chickpea, Potato flour Buckwheat, Certified oats, Amaranth and more. Everyone needs to be cautious in buying the gluten-free labeled items, but we need to be cautious in buying anything that goes into our mouths. How many of the patrons of these stores truly believe that anything sold there is healthful? You can bet that many are certainly swayed to believe most of it is. EPICUREAN

KEEPING YOUR WAISTLINE IN CHECK DURING THE HOLIDAYS Sweet treats at work. Extravagant family dinners. Buffets brimming with holiday indulgences. There’s plenty to savor this time of year, and it doesn’t have to lead to a bigger waistline. Licensed naturopathic doctor Dr. Aimée Gould Shunney believes the holidays are a time to enjoy good food and time with family and friends. With her expert insight, you can make smart eating decisions while avoiding the most notorious food traps of the holiday season. AVOID: Eating holiday sweets to satisfy hunger EAT: Proteins followed by just a bit of dessert “Many of us don’t cook and we simply show up to the party hungry, craving something sweet,” says Shunney. “My suggestion is to have some dessert ... after you have proper sustenance. Make sure you eat regularly throughout the day. Keeping your blood sugar stable will help you make good choices when you get to the party. Be sure to have plenty of high quality protein and fat, like fish, meat, beans, nuts and seeds, as well as fiber, so any sugar you do eat takes longer to metabolize. And then, since you will be sated, you can have a small portion of your favorite dessert. It’s a win-win.” AVOID: Meat and fatty main dishes EAT: Flavorful and festive fish as a main course “Fish contains the essential long-chain omega-3 fats EPA and DHA that are so helpful for a healthy stress response, for blood sugar balance, for mood, and for heart health. Who doesn’t need an extra dose of that at the holidays?” says Shunney. “The truth of the matter is most people rarely eat fish often enough - at least once a day - to get a therapeutic dose of EPA and DHA. Supplementing with two to four caps daily of Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega or Algae Omega, is an excellent way to supplement fish in the diet and ensure the myriad health benefits associated with long chain omega-3s.” AVOID: Overindulging on chocolate goodies EAT: Healthier alternatives that use raw cocoa powder “Sugar cravings are often a sign of low blood sugar,” Shunney says. “It’s your body screaming for quick energy. But remember, while something sweet may confer a quick energy burst, it will also drop you on your bottom sooner than you can say, ‘Oops! I did it again.’” Shunney suggests eating protein or opting for a healthier chocolate alternative like Chocolate Avocado Mousse. (Recipe by Chef Jenny Brewer at www.nourishingnutrition.com)

INGREDIENTS: 3 dates, pitted and soaked in warm water for at least 10 minutes 2 large ripe avocados ½ cup raw cacao or cocoa powder 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract DIRECTIONS: Pulse dates in a food processor until broken down, as close to a paste as you can get them. Add avocados, chocolate, and vanilla and puree until smooth, scraping the sides as needed. Note: taste and add more cocoa and dates if desired. Serve with fresh berries and a few crushed nuts for crunch. AVOID: Eggnog, holiday cocktails and other high calorie drinks EAT: Water or unsweetened juice mixed with mineral water Shunney suggests: “Water, water, water - not very festive, but it really is the best thing to drink for your mood and metabolism. Additionally, a bit of unsweetened juice with sparkling water is a perennial non-alcoholic favorite that feels a bit more special when toasting and doesn’t overload you with sugar and empty calories.” AVOID: Eating everything at a holiday buffet EAT: Your favorites surrounded by veggies and protein “Take small amounts of your favorites, otherwise you’ll be miserable and overeat everything else,” says Shunney. “Then surround those with veggies and protein. Ideally, you should have about 1/4 of your plate be protein and 1/2 to 3/4 of your plate be veggies, and no more than 1/4 of your plate be starch. It’s more doable than you think - especially if you allow yourself to have small amounts of the things you love.” AVOID: Baking with tons of sugar and refined flour EAT: Baked goods with smart sugar and grain substitutes “Recipes always call for way more sugar than needed, so do some research or experiment with cutting sugar in half,” Shunney says. “You can also sweeten with fruit, fruit juice, dates or coconut sugar for added nutrition and to keep the sugar and calories down. Substituting whole grains for refined grains is an excellent way to add fiber and vitamins, and adding whole nuts or using crushed nuts as crusts is a great way to add good quality fat to stabilize blood sugar.”

ART VIEW

LESLIE SHOCKLEY OWNER - Tea With Iris My goal is to create a waste-free environment by gardening, composting, and making products from organic and repurposed materials. All of my products are sewn with my most cherished heirloom, my grandmother’s 1958 Singer Slant-O-Matic sewing machine. My prints are hand-painted from the plants in our native and edible gardens. Working as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines (19961998) opened my eyes to the amount of waste people consume and the detrimental effects it has on the environment. It wasn’t that the people I worked and lived with in the rural fishing community in the Philippines were more wasteful than we are; they had to deal with their waste on a daily basis and couldn’t take it to the curb every week as we do here. I feel that as consumers, we can really change the impact we have on our local and global environment by the way we choose to spend our money and really think about the life cycle each product has on our environment. The products I make are inspired by the materials I find. A vintage linen will transform into a 60‘s-inspired dress I named the Maude dress. A Vera linen and vinyl tablecloth will evolve into a picnic blanket. Or a unique embroidered linen napkin will be the pocket for a girl’s ‘happy power’ dress, which is a loose fitting play dress made from vintage linens. My daughter came up with the term ‘happy power’, asking my husband one morning if he had happy power. I thought it was a perfect name for the first style of girls dresses I designed. If I buy virgin material, I source material made sustainable resources such as organic cotton, bamboo and hemp. My passion for making prints from plants in our garden came from an early appreciation of nature, growing up in the Cahuilla Hills in Palm Desert, California and later on in life taking botany courses in college. I’m continuously learning through nature and want to pass along this knowledge. I share my learning experiences in gardening and composting, and some of the ways I have found to reduce the amount of waste in our household on my website and other social media. www.teawithiris.com | leslie@teawithiris.com
