Rainbow Fashion Week returns to New York City - one of the four fashion capitals in the world - for the third consecutive year kicking off Manhattan’s pre-Pride events with eight days of queer fashion shows, June 17-24, 2016. When it comes to Fair-a-Porter … green is the color du jour! This year, founder and producer Jag E. Beckford is taking Rainbow Fashion Week’s love affair with its Social Responsibility Platform to the next level. The savvy entrepreneur decided to do something revolutionary and announced she will be hosting the firstever Carbon Neutral fashion week.

Conceptualized in June 2013 by Jag E. Beckford, Rainbow Fashion Week brought to New York City and introduced to the United States the first Inaugural 8 Days of Queer Pride Fashion Shows with a social responsibility message. Endorsed by New York City Mayor, Bill DeBlasio as “An Official New York City Pre- Pride Fashion Event,” RFW not only brings fashion at its finest but as well displays the skills of fashion industry insiders & experts as out and proud LGBT professionals. We recently spoke to this visionary fashion designer more insight on this amazing event and her take on the fashion world.

The Standard Magazine: You have had such a diverse career, why fashion design and why now? E. Jaguard Beckford (Jag): Now, has actually been always. I designed custom jeans in the 90’s and sold them for my 3 years in law school. I had a table in outside the LGBT Center and sold custom tees, jeans and jewelry. So deciding to do fashion at this point in life is because my mom encouraged me to do so on her deathbed. She told me life is worth it if you do what you love. I quickly got to work and within 2 years launched my own clothing line for the females who are more male identified like myself. TSM: What was your impetus for starting Rainbow Fashion Week? JB: I get asked this question often. I am a natural artist, I do
photography, sing, dance, draw a true left-brain right brain individual. While I stood above my audience at the JagandCo launch, I was marveled at what the behind the scene creative had accomplished. The make-up was superb, the bois look handsomely dapper, the styling compositions was just the right composition of male identified were to female identified ware. Basically women were wearing clothes design for “male identified” but the femmes killed it. The photographers one on each side of the stage did a live photo shoot during the fashion show. For me “Art” was everywhere and I said, wouldn’t it be great to have such a show. “The Art of Fashion Shows.” TSM: Can you explain the meaning of a carbon neutral fashion show and why is it so important? JB: A carbon Neutral show is where the producers raise their

an equality ideal. That is a necessity ideal. The person seeking looks within our community for the best and brightest, rather than selecting within our community because of our sexuality preferences. We still have a long way to go, because there are not enough opportunities for the upcoming. The industry is very elitist and the old boys seem to have things tightly sewn up. TSM: Who are your fashion influences? level of consciousness. How much energy they consume and how they can reduce it or choose a more green friendly type. For us, the consumption of electricity and use of solar energy makes it carbon neutral. Take our Rainbow Pets event, where our mission is to have the City of New York enact a “Dog Waste Composting” bill. When purchasing cutlery, and disposable dinnerware, biodegradable so we make our purchases from Greenpaperproducts.com. It is important because the Textile industry is the second largest polluter of our global water system. It means selecting strategic partners like Gem Pawn Brokers, who have looked at their industry and policies and decided to re-brand their mission as to what goes to be melted down and what can be put to use outside their norm. The fashion industry as well as all industries must stand up and pay attention to this and we must all collectively do our part, within our industry.
JB: Ralph Lauren. Givenchy, Lanvin and Versace. I love simplicity, elegance and showmanship. The attention to the detail is what excites me about these designers. TSM: What was it like the first time you showed at Fashion Week? JB: It was a bit intimidating at first, but once I heard the responses back house of the other models and designers watching me dress a model, I knew I was where I was supposed to be. TSM: What are your thoughts on all the fashion reality shows that have popped up as of late?
TSM: In an industry that has seemingly been open to the LGBTQ community, do you think that we have reached equality in this arena or do we still have a ways to go?
JB: I love them. There are more movies to feed our appetite; more television shows to whet our whistles and more fashion content to appease the Fashionista.
JB: Not really. This industry has been open to the LGBTQ community in a passive sense. The flamboyant window dresser, or queer hair stylist is the person of choice because they are “artist” they learn the trade and then they artistically master it. Therefore, they are selected because they render the best results. But that is not

TSM: What do you think will be the next big thing in fashion? JB: Technology. Tech clothing, outdoor fashion gadgets, very futuristic things that ironically we’ve been looking at since the Twilight Zone, Star Trek, MadMax etc. Ironically, that is exactly where fashion is going. TSM: And finally, what’s the next big thing for Jag? JB: Rainbow Fashion Week Dream Academy and our very first Women’s Economic Empowerment Program, where we will be sending and receiving models, designers, photographers etc., from abroad and sending our people internationally to broaden their experience, view and perspective of their craft and hopefully inspire them to see what difference they can make in the world outside the US. Our first program will be 10 women in Roatan Honduras receiving Industry grade sewing machines, sewing kits, 100-watt solar panel and 5000-watt solar power generators. Roatan’s Goodwill Ambassador Patricia Gutierrez and the Mayor of Roatan have already granted

us land use for this program. We have their blessing and will be starting a GoFundMe campaign this summer. We’ve been watching a case of a woman named Eartha, there where the court has upheld an original ruling...ending 16 years of an illegally unconstitutional fight over about 600 acres of land that belonged to her family. This ruling freed this Eartha up to “execute” on land development projects, such as the “building of Roatan’s 1st Textile company and work towards securing “funding” for women and youth economic development. RFWDA will fund the 1st round of this economic program making necessary purchases. We will then pay these women to be come our production house. Next we will select various RFW designers and place their line in production. Once the women earn enough to repay into the system, the next 10 women will enter into our program. Jag is an amazingly inspirational woman and business entrepreneur who, going from ordinary to extraordinary, continues to lead a new generation of women and to make a difference. www.RainbowFashionweek.com

A NEW TOUCH-SENSITIVE« CATHETER IMPROVES AFIB TREATMENT BY 30%. « GET IN TOUCH TO LEARN MORE. Atrial fibrillation, or Afib, is a dangerous irregular heartbeat that can lead to stroke or heart failure. The standard treatment is catheter ablation, in which a catheter is guided up to the heart through a blood vessel. Once the catheter reaches the tiny area of tissue causing arrhythmia, the electrophysiologist destroys it using radiofrequency, laser or cryotherapy. Eisenhower Desert Cardiology Center is the only practice in the valley to perform catheter ablation with the Tacti-cath, an innovative touch-sensitive catheter. Using fiber optic technology, our experts can monitor the exact amount of pressure exerted during ablation, delivering the most precise results possible. Tacti-cath offers significant advantages:

MARCH TO EQUALITY:
AN ONLINE MOVEMENT ON IT’S WAY TO MAKING HISTORY BY CHRIS ASTRALA
Back in fall 2014 Stephan Anspichler of Berlin, Germany began an extraordinary journey in the U.S. by making the first step to develop a never before seen campaign for the LGBT movement. “At this time we only knew where we wanted to end the campaign: at the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in June 2019,” he says. What happened in the almost five years between that very first thought and Stonewall’s 50th, was all very far away for the film and TV producer who grew up in a very small city near Germany’s Black Forrest. “If anyone would have warned me what could happen in the process of making such a campaign run, I would have never started,” Anspichler says. “In a way it’s like the challenge of making a movie - when you write and develop the story, there is just no way that you wouldn’t want to proceed and see it all happen on the big screen, but while you’re actually making it, you realize how crazy it is to spend 18 hours a day with nothing else than giving this baby life; and when you’re done with it, you forget how painful it was and you continue to be crazy enough to do another one.” 21 months later we know much more about this campaign. March To Equality is the most expansive virtual march in history supporting full LGBT equality. What sounded like a fabulous idea that seemed to be so obvious for someone to come up with, turned out to be a very complex endeavor. “The complexity of this project was given through the fact that it had to keep its integrity while offering a fun activity that anyone anywhere on the globe could follow and participate in,” he says. Let’s check it out. Visiting the site you are invited to the global community to be part of an important legacy. The only thing a

participant has to do is take a selfie of a step (no matter if you’re walking, running up and down a football field, skydiving, or even swimming). Let your imagination run wild while taking your selfie – because eventually you will end up being part of a historic movement. Next, you simply login to MTE with your Facebook or Google+ profile. In your personal dashboard you’re being asked to “Take Action Now” and upload the selfie you have just produced. Click. Upload Image. Click. Save. Click. Share. Click. #MarchToEquality. Click. Post. Done. “I have donated 1 step to the March To Equality” is the message that everyone that follows you on social media will receive when scrolling down the newsfeed. The contributor meanwhile has already received an email biofeedback from the campaign, stating the participation in the march at this point of the historic timeline. And by looking at the success of the campaign, many people seem to reproduce that model over and over again. As of this writing, 1,949,074 steps were added to the campaign – an extraordinary success.
“We were calculating that we will do really well if we get 1 million steps in the first year. Just eight months into the campaign we have doubled the expectations,” Anspichler says. No wonder that he decided that the goal of the campaign would be to collect 50 million steps by Stonewall’s 50th. A number that sounds logical gets even better by taking into account that it takes 50 million steps to circumnavigate the globe.
with the United Nations Free and Equal campaign; just a few months later, MTE was selected as an official supporting organization of The Economist Magazine’s Pride and Prejudice event in Hong Kong, London and New York; and the story continues with international Pride organizations joining initiatives with MTE.
That’s what’s all happening in the background of MTE. On the forefront, this movement was created to boost change in societies around the globe. In 76 countries homosexuality is still illegal, in 5 countries it can result in being sentenced to death. For Anspichler this is where the real passion comes in, because “LGBT Rights are Human Rights – a right we all get when we are born, is still questioned by too many people on this planet, a place that we all should share with respect to each other.” The support that MTE got so far from organizations and advocates is impressive. The campaign kicked-off in collaboration
One question remains: People are “donating” steps to the campaign – who is donating money? “We can’t ask people in an equality campaign to donate money if we want to be truly equal to everyone,” Anspichler says. “But obviously this campaign needs support to maintain the highly work sensitive online platform. Our answer to this always was to engage brands in support of the cause. This way brands can create a strong message with true values and help the community they serve.”

CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT THE LGBTI COMMUNITY IN INDONESIA BY STEVE ROTH Alturi – International human rights groups opened a global campaign today to support the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex community in Indonesia. Increasing homophobic and transphobic rhetoric by political and religious leaders has caused growing hostility toward members of the LGBTI community in Indonesia, the world’s fourth largest country by population. The campaign will benefit the Indonesian human rights network Arus Pelangi, a national federation supporting LGBTI human rights in Indonesia. The organization has responded to the current backlash by launching an emergency assistance program to help the most vulnerable members of the community. The program includes a temporary safe house for human rights defenders under threat, relocation assistance, a national hotline and other emergency support services. But current funds for emergency services run out at the end of May. Funds raised through this campaign will help ensure that the work continues. Alturi leads the global campaign; a new non-profit organization based in Los Angeles dedicated to raising attention and support for global LGBTI advocates, and is joined by Human Rights Watch and OutRIght Action International. “Arus Pelangi has provided a critically important voice for the LGBTI community in Indonesia for more than 10 years,” said Steve Roth, co-founder and director of Alturi. “And when this current backlash against LGBTI people began they quickly sprang into action. But this emergency support puts a strain on their resources, so we’re asking Americans and other members of the international community to make a small contribution to help them continue this important work.” Alturi, Human Rights Watch and OutRight Action International invite members of the international community to contribute to help ensure that Arus Pelangi can provide emergency services to LGBTI Indonesians most in need as result of the hostile, anti-LGBTI rhetoric from government officials. Funds raised will also support Arus Pelangi’s broader work to ensure the well being of LGBTI Indonesians, including their “You Are Not Alone” awareness campaign and other critical advocacy work.
The campaign can be found at: www.alturi.org/indonesia_campaign.com “When urgent needs like these arise, we have to act quickly to help and protect the most vulnerable members our community,” said Yuli Rusinawati, founder and chairperson of Arus Pelangi. “At the same time, we have to keep advocating strongly for equality and respect for the broader LGBTI community in Indonesia. We greatly appreciate the support from the international community, which will enable us to keep pushing forward with our work on multiple fronts.” Established in 2006, Arus Pelangi is a non-profit, memberbased federation that works to advance the human rights of LGBTI people in Indonesia through education, public awareness, advocacy and community organizing. “OutRight partners with Arus Pelangi to change hearts and minds in Indonesia to support long-term change -- but right now they need emergency support to keep their community safe and stand tall in the face of mounting opposition,” said Jessica Stern, executive director of OutRight Action International. About Alturi: Alturi is a groundbreaking organization devoted to helping Americans from all walks of life connect with and support the work of courageous LGBTI advocates striving to end discrimination and violence worldwide. Alturi, online at Alturi.org, is the solution to increase engagement and contributions by individual American donors to organizations working to improve the lives of LGBTI people globally. FEATURE PHOTOGRAPHER MAGNUS HASTINGS POSES THE QUESTION
“WHY DRAG?” Magnus Hastings’ new coffee-table book, Why Drag? offers readers a rare glimpse at a generation in drag. Inspired by the photographer’s renowned New York art exhibition, Why Drag? began in the summer of 2014, when Hastings set out to travel through North America to shoot some of drag’s brightest talents and biggest names. With his camera in tow, Hastings made his way across the country for two years, snapping hundreds of intimate portraits while posing models the question: Why drag? The book offers answers from the industry’s top talent, in the form of gorgeous photos by Hastings accompanied by short stories that are marked by their humor and, oftentimes, sincerity. Queens featured in the book include Bianca Del Rio, Courtney Act, Jackie Beat, Adore Delano, Jinkx Monsoon, Lady Bunny, Detox, and Sharon Needles. The legendary Boy George writes the book’s foreword. Magnus Hastings’ affection for his subject runs deep, and if only in his meticulous attention to detail, it shows in earnest from cover to cover. “I think a big part of Why Drag? is rooted in that little effeminate boy who was shamed out of doing what made him happy,” says Hastings. “I grew up resenting that childhood version of myself until one day, I had such a wave of love for him. I realized how extraordinary and beautiful he was, how fearless. Somehow I think this honors him.” Hastings’ reputation precedes him as the eminent man behind the lens when it comes to all things drag, so it only makes sense that his volume of drag portraits would push boundaries, provoke thought, and put the unapologetic on parade. Prevalent cityscapes include New York City, Los Angeles, and the artist’s drag city of choice, San Francisco. “I have such a soft spot for San Francisco drag,” says Hastings. “And the incredible way they create something for just one night. That’s kind of been skipped by the mainstream, but it’s a huge part of my book.”

Inside the pages, you’ll see pageant queens strut in full regalia while waiting for a bus. A pair of queens, one hundred pages apart, call upon the courage drag gives them to set aside anxiety, finding solace behind winged tips. Bianca Del Rio digs into a Barbie doll with pins and needles, reflecting on how drag lets her sharp tongue fly free, while Adore Delano gives great face in front of a McDonald’s while rocking a Budweiser one-piece, shot on the streets of West Hollywood. “Adore Delano is a fantastic representation of an important side of drag,” says Hastings. “That punk rock, I-don’t-give-a-shit edge that gets watered down the more mainstream it gets. Drag is meant to be challenging and dangerous as far as I’m concerned, not safe and sponsored by Disney.” “Drag doesn’t make much sense.” So writes Alaska Thunderfuck, pictured off of Melrose Avenue. “It takes up all of your time, consumes most of your money, and may subject you to some of the most extreme ridicule on the planet.” “But I imagine it is like being a nun or priest,” she continues. “Once you get the divine calling, you have no choice in the matter and you belong to drag for life.” A testimony to the photographer’s talents as a portraitist, Why Drag? also serves as a timely reiteration that in a drag culture where pushing boundaries is the exception rather than the rule there will always be a need to stand up for grit. “I want people who don’t know drag to be opened up to its beauty and its comedy,” says Hastings. “It’s a wonderland, and I want people to go there.” Magnus Hastings’ “Why Drag?” is available now everywhere books are sold on via Chronicle Books.

He became the stuff of myths and legends. So if your travels bring you to Palm Springs, please stop by and visit our gallery to see the ever changing body of jewelry “artwork” we have available.

BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED… BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
Your summer is filling up quickly. It starts with graduations and confirmations. You’ve already got a pile of “Save the Date” cards for a bunch of weddings, and the summer wraps up with family reunions and more weddings. It might even end with yours, and in the new book “The Best Party of Our Lives” by Sarah Galvin, you’ll see how “I do” becomes “whooo hoooo!” Even though she “always figured” she’d end up spending her life with a woman, Sarah Galvin “certainly had no interest in weddings….” They just weren’t relevant to her, except for an irksome knowledge that much of the wedding industry was biased against LGBTQ couples. Later, as a writer for a newspaper in Seattle, she began getting requests to “crash” weddings and she was “blown away by the things” she saw. Weddings – especially for LGBTQ couples – weren’t what she thought they’d be. Their parties were “the best ones imaginable…” The stories of some she found are in this book. When a couple looks back on their boy-meets-boy (or girlmeets-girl) story, there’s often an element of surprise. There was an introduction, either traditionally or through modern methods like Craigslist, online, or dance rave. Falling in love might’ve begun with bumps and rough spots, followed by the realization of common interests and the happy idea that you can’t get her out of your mind. No two proposals are alike, although today’s couples almost always have some sort of prior discussion on it. The actual “Will you…” might be romantic and accompanied by one or two rings, or it may be an out-loud wondering if moving in together meant more than merely sharing a home. And just like the proposals are varied, so are the budgets, which usually leads to a DIY ceremony that more reflects the pair. Some of the couples in this book had Domestic Partnerships long before they married. One couple debated marriage altogether, figuring that there was no reason to wed as an “affirmation of the love they’d known was true” for years. Some invited nearly everyone they knew, while one couple sent “Don’t Save the Date” tchotchkes. There were cakes and cake-toppers, toasts and gifts, and one “thirty-three-year relationship [that] deserved a party…” So you recently got engaged, or maybe you’ve got love on the brain. How do other LGBTQ couples make their special days… special? “The Best Party of Our Lives” is packed with ideas on that. It’s also packed with another thing: stories that are very Seattle-
22 THESTANDARDPS.COM
centric. Author Sarah Galvin says she “started with” Seattle couples but she never really got any farther than that, although LGBTQ couples get married all over the place. I would’ve absolutely liked to see wider coverage from this book; the minimized area doesn’t make it bad – it makes it a lot of the same. Even so, if you’ve got stars in your eyes, a ring on your finger, and romance on your mind, you’ll barely notice. For you, newlywedto-be, “The Best Party of Our Lives” will fill you with happiness. “The Best Party of Our Lives: Stories of Gay Weddings” by Sarah Galvin c.2015, Sasquatch Books $18.95, U.S. & Canada / 226 pages

EMILY DICKINSON’S DESK BY LEE LYNCH
How do gay writers celebrate the end of a book, a poem, a story? I don’t know about Sarah Orne Jewett, Langston Hughes, Willa Cather, or Allen Ginsberg, but after that brief moment of relief, before the serious editorial worrying begins, after my sweetheart takes me for a long walk on the beach and a romantic dinner with a view, I clean my desk. Okay, I don’t clean it that night, or the next day. It might take a month. Or two. I like to get a few short stories written between books, so the purging comes in fits and starts. But definitely before I begin the next book. This time, after four years of concentrated writing and nine years of research on my new book, Rainbow Gap (due out in December), I’m still struggling with the logistics of making the desk optimally functional. For inspiration, I went on line. I found a photo of Emily Dickinson’s desk. In an old issue of Amherst Magazine, Dickinson’s niece is quoted: Emily’s “only writing desk... a table, 18-inches square, with a drawer deep enough to take in her ink bottle, paper and pen. It was placed in the corner by the window facing west.” Eighteen inches square? No wonder she wrote such short poems. Didn’t she
24 THESTANDARDPS.COM
need space for her drafts? Her little red toy tractor? An index card file? Her thermometer/barometer? Oh—I guess that would be me. I do the household filing and a while back that situation got out of hand. Our filing consists of shoving the right piece of paper into the right folder—eventually. I never expected the pile would climb to such heights. As a stopgap measure I plopped a cardboard inbox on the desk. There were complications. Our cat’s personal physician suggested some time ago that we provide stimulation with kibble “hunts.” It soon emerged that Bolo’s most stimulating place to hunt was my desk. Kibble could be found inside the overflowing inbox, under the escaped bills, behind the paperweights and hand thrown pots of pens, and inside irresistibly tiny boxes and mini-crates filled with small hand tools, pretty rocks, batteries, a penknife, outdated newspaper clippings—the ephemera of the writers’ trade. The kitty dumped the contents of the inbox between the desk and the adjacent four-drawer file cabinet so often I placed a wicker trash can there and labeled it Inbox. “There was a secret
compartment in Henry James’ desk,” according to the brilliant biographer Leon Edel. He wrote that, when explored, no secret stash was discovered. I would have found something to put in that compartment, you betcha. Louisa May Alcott’s “… father built her a half-moon desk between two windows and a bookcase to hold her favorite books.” That sounds a bit roomier than Emily’s. I wouldn’t want a desktop computer on it, though, cutting out the window view. I’ve learned to place my desk to one side of the window, so I can watch birds at feeders we’ve hung right outside. As a matter of fact, I just spotted my first Chestnut-backed Chickadee of the season. I’ll bet Louisa May was as distracted by the view as I am. Langston Hughes was more disciplined. His very small manual typewriter and metal gooseneck lamp were on a desk that faced a wall. To use a typewriter, a sturdy desk was necessary. Hughes’ desk also held a large telephone, his cigarettes and matches. Neat, and a far cry from Emily Dickinson’s writing table. Although Willa Cather is sometimes pictured with a substantial desk—perhaps after she moved to Greenwich Village—one of her writing desks was a “secretary.” I have my Nana’s secretary. Spindly legs, a flip down writing surface that rests on the open drawer for support. Some cubbies inside. A narrow shelf low to the floor. I never penned a word there. Sarah Orne Jewett wrote at an elaborate secretary, more of a hutch with glass display case above, ample drawers below, and a hinged writing flap. I could no more write on a secretary than I could build a skyscraper on a placemat. Nana’s is in our kitchen storing address books and gewgaws. A 1986 photograph Dave Breithaupt took of Allen Ginsberg’s desk, in his bedroom on East 12th in New York, shows neatly arranged stacks of paper, a lamp with a bare bulb, a pen. It looks as if Ginsberg tamed his desktop and would have known where to find exactly which page of “Howl” he was looking for. Of course, he had at least four, maybe six, drawers that hid who knows what. James Baldwin’s desk was gloriously outrageous. Large, a photograph shows it covered edge to edge with paper and more paper and a great big electronic typewriter. That describes my desk except for the machine, because writers no longer need desks. A desk makes a great surface for stapling and organizing. Its drawers are indispensable. I write seated in a small recliner, but it seems an apt celebratory ritual and homage to the queer writers before me to give my desk periodic respectful attention.

Now in its 22nd year, Palm Springs International ShortFest will showcase 327 films including 46 World Premieres, 63 North American Premieres and 13 U.S. Premieres. The selection of films for screening and competition features star-studded casts and award-winning films from 54 countries around the world. There are 56-curated programs, which will screen June 21-27, at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs. More than 4,100 of the festival submissions are available in the Film Market for industry attendees to view. The complete line-up will be posted on www. psfilmfest.org on June 12 with the online box office launch on June 14. Festival Director Helen du Toit says, “After a 31% jump in submissions this year, our programing team, led by the sharp-minded and quick-witted Penelope Bartlett, is exhausted but exhilarated. Our audiences will see a broader international representation of stories than ever before. Much like with their feature films, Romania appears to be breeding especially bold and original filmmakers while France’s long entrenched policy of supporting the arts, continues to bear fruit as well. With the new crop of talented filmmakers emerging around the world, the future looks bright indeed.” Programming Director Penelope Bartlett is excited to be embracing some of the evolving trends in world cinema, “We are showing more documentaries, more experimental films, and more of the hard to categorize, hybrid films which play with film form in exciting ways. We cast the net far and wide to ensure we had more films from less represented regions, like Africa and the Middle East, and films by indigenous filmmakers and filmmakers of color. In terms of female director representation, although there is still a ways to go to achieve parity, we are heartened to see that a third of our program is by female directors.” This year’s star-studded shorts feature Academy Award® winners and nominees, as well as film and television stars including Richard Kind in Black Swell (USA); Boy (Canada) directed by Connor Jessup; Aitana

LEGALLY SPEAKING
PLEASE! TELL THEM YOU CARE BY CHRISTOPHER HERITAGE
The longer I have been in my legal practice, the more I am concerned about otherwise smart and careful folks who don’t take the few, inexpensive steps to prevent chaos when they get sick or die. I know I have written about this before, but I really must say it again. Why would you ignore the relatively simple steps to make sure your relatives and friends are not left with a tangle of messy legal issues if you get sick or you are gone? If you care at all for them, why not set in place a simple plan for handling your affairs? It may cost a tiny bit now, but it will save a huge amount in court costs, probate fees, and frazzled relationships of your loved ones in the future. More and more, people come through my door asking for help with sad and often very complicated situations like these: A close relative died and no one knows what to do or who is in charge. Who has to pay for the funeral services, the medical bills, the car and mortgage payments? Creditors are knocking on the door. How to handle family feuds when relatives disagree on Dad’s intentions. Are his children and his stepchildren all his legal heirs? Which bunch is in charge? How can a woman get her house out of the name of her partner after the partner died? Is it really her house now? If not, where will she go? She has very little income, and can’t afford to move. How to get the bank to give information to the life partner of a person who is incapacitated. He needs access to the account to pay their bills. But no one seems to have authority to handle the partner’s affairs, and the bank won’t budge. How to sell Mom’s house when she didn’t leave a Will or Trust and all of the relatives just want cash and they want it NOW! But wait; are any of them really her heirs? How to parcel out bank accounts and real property among heirs when the Will or Trust doesn’t say how to divide it up. Who makes the decision?
32 THESTANDARDPS.COM
If any lawyers actually enjoy handling these serious problems, I don’t know them. It’s tough enough losing someone close. Legal problems only make it far worse. Lawyers do not feel good about any of the legal tangles that involve family squabbles and financial trauma. I know how to handle all these probate problems, but because I am trained as an attorney to give good advice and good counsel, it is my moral and ethical responsibility to get a message through to everyone before these serious issues arise. Please listen: Do you think you might ever have a period when you are unable to handle your financial affairs? You most likely will. Count on it. It is expected that 70% of us will have one or more periods in our lives when we are incapacitated and not physically or mentally able to manage things. Do you have a partner, children or other relatives who might expect to inherit some of your assets after you die? Do you want to leave them with uncertainty because you didn’t get around to stating what you want for them? Whether you want to leave something to all, to some, or to none of them, it is very important to make your wishes clear. Otherwise the Probate Court will make the decision for you.
Do you have a life partner to whom you want to pass some or all of your assets? If you aren’t married or registered domestic partners, your life partner will most likely be out in the cold if you don’t take steps now. Do you have a person that you trust who could do a good job of sorting things out if you become incapacitated or after you pass on? Someone you trust to carry out your wishes? Let an attorney put it on paper so everyone is clear about your plans. If, sadly, you don’t have any close relatives or friends you trust, what will happen to you and your possessions if you become incapacitated or die? Do you want a say in what happens? Attorneys and other professionals can help you decide how things should be handled. You can make the critical choices that will make your legacy a positive move, not a complicated and expensive problem for the people who are left behind. In California, the Probate Code governs how the estates of decedents will be handled. You may always choose how you want
your assets to be distributed. But if you don’t take time to choose, your relatives, heirs and friends are going to be totally up in the air. The Probate Court will decide who is in charge, and who will receive all your property. This can be very sad and depressing, and certainly very time-consuming and expensive for anyone who cared for you. All you have to do to prevent this is to say something in a Will or Trust. State your wishes. Make it easy for the folks who have stood by you. Do you care? Then please tell them you care by doing something about it right now.

IS THE FAT BURNING ZONE A MYTH? BY ADAM SINICKI
There are many things that we accept to be true when it comes to losing weight and often we don’t question these things as much as we should. Take for instance the idea of a ‘fat burning zone’. Many of us will have been designing our workouts around this concept and some personal trainers will tell you this is a good idea – but if you look a little deeper you may find it’s not as sure a thing as you previously believed. Let’s take a closer look and see if there really is a ‘fat burning zone’ or if it is just a myth. THE IDEA The general idea here is that there is a fat burning zone which is the optimum heart rate for losing the most weight. Usually it is agreed that this should be somewhere around 70-75% of your MHR (Maximum Heart Rate) and the reasoning behind this is sound. When you exercise, your body needs to find energy to help you keep going. To do this, it can look to the muscles, the blood stream or your fat stores. When you work out at 70-75%, the body will quickly exhaust the glycogen stores in your muscles and will then move on to other sources. The best place for it then to find energy to fuel your movements is in the fat stores and thus you enter the ‘aerobic’ energy system. Now your body will start taking in more oxygen and your heart rate will increase. The objective is to deliver more oxygen to your fat stores where it will react and break it down (oxygen is highly reactive, which is why fire needs it to burn!). If you start training harder though and you go above 80% of your MHR, then you will be placing even greater demands on your body. The problem with your aerobic energy system is that it’s just too slow and it’s actually too slow for this kind of exertion. Thus you will enter what is known the ‘anaerobic’ energy system, where your body will get its energy from the glucose stored in your blood. Essentially then, medium exertion is slow enough to allow your body to burn fat while intense exertion requires you to burn carbs instead and doesn’t give you the chance to get rid of your muffin top. Thus is born the idea of the ‘fat burning zone’. THE PROBLEM But the thing is, even after you’ve finished training, your body still
needs energy. This is necessary simply in order for us to breathe, to blink, to walk around and to think. And if you’ve been engaging in anaerobic exercise, then that means you’ll have no glucose left in your blood to fuel this activity. So where does the body turn? You got it: to fat stores! What this all means then, is that while regular cardio at around 70% of your MHR might lead to the best short term fat loss, training harder will actually lead to continued fat burning long after your training ends. Some people describe this as the ‘after burn effect’ and when used to its fullest, it can help you to continue burning calories throughout the day. The Best Way to Utilize Intense Training If you’re up to date with your training knowledge, then you might know where this leads next: to HIIT. HIIT is High Intensity Interval Training and many people believe that this is one of the best training methods available for burning fat. The reason is that HIIT actually involves both of these types of training, with the objective being to alternate between periods of relatively light 70% exercise and periods of much more intense training at around 90%. What this does is causes you to change between your aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. The anaerobic then causes you to use up all of the glucose in your bloodstream, which means that your aerobic exercise becomes even more efficient at burning fat subsequently. Furthermore, you will then find that you continue to burn a lot more fat for a long time afterward and as an added bonus, HIIT is also thought to increase mitochondrial efficiency for even more fat burning in the long, long-term. To calculate your MHR and thus ensure you’re training at the right level, try monitoring your heart rate during exercise. Push yourself as hard as you possibly can and note the highest point your heart rate reaches – this is your MHR. Now calculate 90% of that number and 70% and you can use this for HIIT. Be careful though if you have any history of heart problems or if you’re new to training. HIIT performed properly is very intensive and can be overly challenging for complete newcomers to the gym!

10 EXPERT HEALTH TIPS THAT SIMPLIFY HOLISTIC LIVING BY KATIE CAVUTO
Diet fads, new workout regimens, exotic health supplements - every day, people are inundated with headlines about health trends. Out of the clutter and confusion a new, arguably more sensible, health movement is gaining traction: holistic living. Taking a holistic health approach means looking at your overall wellness from a big picture perspective. That means you take thoughtful steps to better your mental and physical health while doing things that bring you joy. Wellness expert and culinary nutritionist Katie Cavuto embraces holistic living and believes the best path to health is to look at each person’s journey through a broad lens. With that in mind, she offers her 10 best tips to help anyone get started living healthier by prioritizing mind, body and earth benefits. 1. SAVOR EACH BITE. Take time to delight in the eating experience. Doing so helps you feel more satisfied with smaller portions of your favorite foods. Slow down to notice flavors, textures and changes as you chew each morsel. 2. EMBRACE MINDFUL SNACKING. Focusing the mind is nearly impossible when hunger strikes. Almonds are the perfect portable snack to stave off hunger. Forget bland snacking by trying a new flavor of almonds to energize your taste buds. 3. SHIFT YOUR INTENTIONS AROUND FOOD. Instead of focusing on dieting and will power, focus your energy on creating a nourishing, nutrient-dense plate of whole foods, and find bliss in your intention to care for yourself. 4. TRY NEW NUTRIENT-DENSE INGREDIENTS. From almond butter to almond milk, almond flour to whole almonds, there are many ways to incorporate almonds into your daily snacks and meals to ensure you’re consuming adequate amounts of key nutrients. Get easy ideas for wholesome meals and snacks at www.almonds.com.
5. SNACK FOR HEART HEALTH. Scientific evidence suggests, but does not prove, that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as almonds, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease. One serving of almonds (28g) has 13g of unsaturated fat and only 1g of saturated fat. 6. EAT WITH GRATITUDE. Gratitude practices can bring happiness. The same can be said for creating joyful eating experiences. Shared meals with loved ones can be uplifting and provide a positive boost to any day. 7. CREATE CONVENIENCE FOODS. Resist unhealthy vending machine temptations by preparing wholesome convenience foods. For example, just one serving of almonds contains 6 grams of protein. Keep servings in your car, gym bag, purse or office so you have a crave-worthy, crunchy snack on hand at all times. 8. GROW SOMETHING. Growing your own food is healthy and rewarding. Indoor container gardens are easy to maintain all year. Plus, the presence of plants in the home can improve air quality while reducing stress and anxiety. 9. PREPLAN BREAKFAST. Ensure you have time for this essential meal by preparing breakfast foods ahead of time. Make smoothie packets and store them in the freezer, or blend up a smoothie the night before. Add a scoop of almond butter to create a more satisfying meal. 10. EMBRACE MEATLESS MONDAY Become part of the “Meatless Monday” movement and incorporate plant-based proteins, like almonds into your meals. Plant-based proteins often contain good, unsaturated fats that offer many health benefits. Try these tips to improve your overall health.

FAMILY HOSPICE CARE Who is Family Hospice Care? Family Hospice Care is a Medicare certified local hospice provider with a dedicated team of compassionate and caring healthcare professionals, who strive to provide the highest level of care and support services to your community. We strive to enable terminally ill patients to live a dignified, pain free and symptom-controlled life & enhancing the quality of life, when the quantity of life is limited. What is Hospice? Hospice is a specialized type of care which focuses on providing you or your loved one with comfort and pain & symptom controlled medical care; carried out through a team-oriented approach of expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to you or your loved one’s wishes. Emotional and spiritual support also is extended to you or your loved one’s family. Who pays for Hospice care? Medicare, private health insurance, and Medi-Cal pay for hospice care for patients who meet certain criteria. We spoke to one of the outstanding Family Hospice Care volunteers, Richmond Curtiss who expressed why he choose to do what he does. How long have you been volunteering for FHC? This summer I will be starting my 4th year as a Family Hospice volunteer. Why did you decide to become a volunteer at FHC? After spending many years on disability and doing very little but watching TV my boyfriend suggested that I try volunteering as a way to get off the couch and back into life. He had seen an article about hospice needing volunteers and suggested it. It appealed to me because when my Father died, he was in a hospice situation and I remembered how wonderful the staff had been with us, his family. When one works with a hospice patient, often it is as much about helping the family as it is about the patient. It also suited me in a historical sense. Back in the 1960s my Grandparents were among the group of people who helped establish the first Hospice in the United States in New Haven. My Grandfather eventually died in that hospice. What do you find to be the most fulfilling part about the job? In my experience Americans tend to have a cultural denial of death. Everything seems to be about living longer and doing whatever is
necessary to postpone or somehow cheat death. When the inevitability of death presents itself, many people find themselves unprepared. In hospice these people find a support system they never expected to need. It is gratifying to be part of that unexpected support. Death is often a process and it involves both the person who is dying and the people around them. People who are dying can need everything from emotional support to someone to go shopping for them. Assisting someone who is in the process of dying can help him or her leave this world comfortably and with dignity. Knowing that I have helped someone in this way provides a feeling of fulfillment...that I have done something worthwhile. CHICAGO PRIDE HOOKS IN “THE LOST BOYS” BY MIKE TROMBINO Chicago Pride celebrates its fourth year of Neverland this June with its biggest themed Pride event ever, “The Lost Boys”. “Our parties are always a tribute to big imagination,” proclaims Anthony DiFiore, Neverland’s founder and Creative Director. “For this year’s Chicago Pride, our production team is building extravagant Peter Pan and Hook elements to the main stage. Instead of traditional sets, we’re producing the night as more of a storyline with dancers and performers dressed as the famous characters. “All the weekend’s events will be even more theatrical than ever before,” he promises. Neverland Pride launches Friday, June 24th at 11pm with a special edition of GayGlow spun by Nando, one of the most energetic and happening DJs on today’s national club scene. The fun continues Saturday at 11pm when NEVERLAND presents “The Lost Boys” at Metro, a two-story concert hall that boasts one of the finest stages in Chicago. It will be a surreal night of character-driven fantasy featuring a massive set. Barcelona-based DJ Ivan Gomez will man the decks alongside Chicago’s own Alexis-R. Wrapping the weekend will be the Sunday night Closing Party at Mid, headlined by International superstar DJ Paulo. Paulo will present a dark and visceral production amidst one of Chicago’s most powerful sound systems. Opening DJs Sean O’Hara and TVG will start the night at 10pm with Paulo taking over until 4am.
Last year’s Pride party was a “Boogie Ball”. Producers went all out with the theme, from putting fake rolls of hundred dollar bills as toilet paper in the bathrooms, to firing off fake money as confetti during Sasha Colby’s performance of “Bitch Better Have My Money”. Giant gold birdcages flanked the stage with go-go dancers wearing three-foot long lion headdresses.
The first Neverland took place July 2012. Billed as a costume party with club music, it was kind of like Halloween in the middle of the summer. “We were an instant hit with the young crowd,” remembers DiFiore. In order to create a big dance party brand, he needed everyone to come. “Guys in their late 30s and 40s would tell me they were too old for a costume party.”
“What sets our team apart is that many of our artists don’t even go to big dance parties. They’re a set designer who cares deeply about what the set is going to look like, or a costume designer who is developing their own label and is working with Neverland to showcase their talents.”
In 2013, Neverland introduced themes to the events, along with more elaborate production. At “Walt Disney is Dead”, Brazil’s DJ Ana Paula dressed up as Maleficent while she was spinning. For the “Ratchet Ball”, producers brought in a graffiti artist from Michigan to create graffiti on large canvases hanging from the walls of Hydrate Nightclub.
Even the crowd gets in on the act, with many of the attendees arriving in full costume. “Revelers are always welcome to wear whatever they want,” says DiFiore. “Some will come in simple jeans and tees, and that’s fine! I’m excited to see lot of Pans, Hooks and of course, Tinkerbells.”
Soon, every group was represented, from muscle guys to hipsters to drag queens and more. “Today’s Neverland is like a Studio 54-style party,” says DiFiore.
