CREATING AN ARTFUL COMMUNITY

Life long artist and Coachella Valley native Debra Ann Mumm is making an impact in the desert art scene. With 30 years of artist materials training and numerous painting workshops, this Palm Springs High School and College of the Desert alumni is the creator of Venus Studios LLC, a business that focuses on providing materials, education, studio space and exhibition opportunities for the local art community. Debra also shares her insights as an art teacher, specializing in personal creativity and acrylic systems, as a public speaker on the benefits of art and creativity, and works as an advocate for public art projects and creative place making.

6 THESTANDARDPS.COM

As a working artist, her focus is painting on non-traditional surfaces, assemblage and installation work constructed primarily from found objects near her studio in Landers, CA. She finds that the themes of unity and ascension that are often the focus of her compositions are best articulated without the barrier of language, which can divide people and cultures. Art itself acts as a universal language providing a powerful platform for dialogue between all human beings. Ultimately, this is how we change the world. As an entrepreneur, Debra has grown Venus Studios from a small art supply store into a creative hub for the community. With a very recent move to the heart of Palm Desert she plans to continue to expand educational services and artistic opportunities in the new “Cultural Corridor area near San Pablo. The new central location is a very exciting step in a new direction for Venus Studios as well as the City of Palm Desert. Before the business was even moved

in, Debra secured permission from the building owner and the City of Palm Desert to create a highly visible mural near the new location. While there is only a picture of the blank wall to show for the moment‌ the big reveal is coming soon. This piece is a bold vibrant statement that will enhance and draw attention to the area, as well as provide opportunity for people to enjoy art outside of the traditional museum or gallery setting. The relocation of Venus Studios LLC and Venus Studios Art Supply was not a decision made lightly, especially considering that the art supply has over 12,000 items that had to be moved. The idea began with Venus Studios pARTicipation in the Vision San Pablo Event held by the City of Palm Desert in May, it became clear that the plans for the area were a perfect fit for the business. The new configuration gives the art supply a separate space from the studio next door, and the private studio suites in an adjacent building.

It is also within walking distance of some great eateries as well as College of the Desert and El Paseo. It is a neighborhood with considerable creative potential. The next focus is on an even bigger project… a Center for

the Arts located in the same centrally located area of Palm Desert. Debra is teaming up with Sarah Schiedeman founder of Coachella Valley Art Scene (a 501c3 non-profit) combining their arts forward programming with Venus Studios to create a Center for the Arts.

A CONVERSATION WITH DEBRA MUMM What is going on in your world right now? The big thing right now is that Venus Studios is moving to the San Pablo “Cultural Corridor” area of Palm Desert. The Art Supply, the studio, and private studio suites are now located in a spot that is close to the College of the Desert, El Paseo, and walking distance to some great eateries. We love this new central location in the heart of the city. We are building the new studio suites to be ready in early July. This is an exciting new spin on the model we had upstairs, a group of creatives sharing a space, with their own private locking studios, a common kitchen area and lounge. It will be great for the artists that have been at our old location to have a more private space that they don’t have to share with the workshops and weekly classes. They have become an art family, and we are so happy to be able to bring everyone to the neighborhood. Plus, we have room for a couple of new additions. Rental information is available on our website.

The other really exciting thing is this neighborhood is screaming for some public art. This is a place where the arts can have an extremely positive impact. There has been an approved mural proposal for a wall that faces San Pablo Ave. near our new location, thanks to the generous permission of the building owner and support from the City of Palm Desert. As an advocate for public art, having this groundbreaking mural in close proximity to our new location is a dream come true. It is fantastic to have the support of the city behind us moving forward with this project. Can’t wait for the big reveal! And, as if that were not enough news about what is going on, there is more. Even bigger news is in the works… it is amazing to even be saying this, but a perfect location has been discovered for the creation of a Center for the Arts, in the very same San Pablo and Highway 111 neighborhood! Everything has been lining up to point us in this direction, it is an incredible opportunity to create a central

location for a wide variety of arts programming. Coachella Valley Art Scene (a 501c3 non-profit) and Venus Studios are merging their programming and efforts to build a permanent Center for the Arts. More about this… CVAS is currently operating MAKE, a pop up space at Westfield Palm Desert, but are due to relocate in August. The programming they offer ranges from emerging artist gallery shows, to poetry workshops, open mic nights and live music concerts. They are also well known for their crafting events held at various locations around the valley and annually at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. Venus Studios offers classes and workshops in drawing and painting for kids and adults of all levels. From portraits to landscapes to abstracts, something for any visual artist to explore. In our old location the gallery focused on local emerging artists and we are known for our community exhibitions. It is a perfect storm for CVAS and VS to come together. This space is worth the effort it is going to take to make it happen. Anyone interested in volunteering or being a part of the growing board of directors, please don’t hesitate to reach out. It is a big project! We are looking forward to getting to know more creatives in our community and create an amazing space for them to thrive. What would you guess the future will hold? For me personally, makers gotta make, not that I am not creating, I am… something big and beneficial to the community, which is an amazing place to find yourself, but I also need time to create for me. I have new ideas and directions that I would like to experiment with in my work, so getting back to the studio in Landers is going to be critical to my overall wellbeing and part of the big picture plan. The other part is to make more time for speaking, teaching and writing. Creativity is a hot topic. Getting people to let go and create and be authentic and enjoy the act of doing is very rewarding. And scientifically proven to be good for you. The more we can engage in creative thinking, the better chance we have to come up with solutions to some of the difficulties we face. Creativity and artistic expression are steppingstones to healing inwardly and outwardly. From ourselves, to our communities. Any opportunity I have to give in assisting others with engaging in their creativity will be a consideration.

I recently led a “Quantum Artist” workshop at the Palm Springs Art Museum, for the Artists Council group, which was very inspiring. Venus Studios leads a lot of “how to” kind of workshops, so I wanted to do something different, more about the why of it and being authentic in our creation. It was a group comprised primarily of my mentors, (slightly intimidating) but it boiled down to everyone suffering from very similar creative insecurities. Making art is a vulnerable situation. “Art is not for sissies” is something you hear me say often, and it is really true. It is difficult to make things just to please ourselves for some reason. And when you are a professional, it becomes more difficult because you are making a product and attaching your livelihood to a chance that someone likes it. Then we start to make for others approval, which is a terrible situation for most creatives. Even though I am a materials expert, I feel like most of my future teaching focus will be on authentic creative flow. The right products are helpful to get you as close as possible to what you can visualize in your imagination, but it is really about the vision, having the courage to express it. AND, enjoying the ride. Other stuff… Thoughts I would add… well, the 2017 Venus Studios workshop season is a fantastic all-star line-up of really amazingly talented instructors. Venus Studios continues to offer an impressive selection of painting and drawing workshops for 2017. The 2017 schedule has just been released and is open for registration. Most of these classes will end up with a waiting list, and people are already signing up to hold their spot for next season. If you are an artist or thinking of making art, we are here for you at any level. Basically I like to think of Venus Studios as your creative support team. From the technical information you need about products, to instruction and inspiration. The mission is to be there creatively, for our community. The Art Supply store is open now in the new location, 44850 Las Palmas Ave. Suite D, Palm Desert. The studio next door in Suite C will hold classes through the summer. There are currently classes Tuesday through Saturday for kids and adults. Also, people can get together in the new space with friends and paint! It is a great summertime activity. Bring snacks, hang out, listen to music, and get creative.

THE ART OF FOOD BY CHRIS ASTRALA

CHRISTEL ASSANTE, JIM VICTOR, GIUSEPPE ARCIMBOLDO

Remember when you were growing up, your parents always told you not to play with your food? Well you can be sure that the following artists were told that too, but after you take a look at their work you will be glad that they did not listen to their parents advice. French sculptor Christel Assante uses the naturally delicate qualities of eggshells to create sculptures that are extraordinarily fragile, creating designs that almost resemble lacework in their intricacy. Assante creates custom designs for buyers, working in mostly quail and goose eggs. Each egg takes her about 3 to 4 days to sculpt. The eggs are lit from a small bulb placed inside through a hole in the bottom. Sculptor Jim Victor spends hours in extremely cold freezers sculpting mounds and mounds of butter into life-size figures of horses, children, and of course, cows. Butter isn’t the only food material he works with – he has created sculptures in chocolate and cheese as well as mounds of fruits and vegetables. He also works in traditional media like bronze and wood. Renaissance artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo was perhaps the first artist to use food to create a mosaic image, though his work was

12 THESTANDARDPS.COM

in paint, not made of food itself. This image, ‘Summer’, is part of a seasonal series and features a human profile made up of fruits and vegetables. His work had a surreal quality long before the advent of the Surrealist Art movement, and his ‘food portraits’ no doubt inspired some of the other artists on this list. James Parker of Veggy Art creates some of the most incredible fruit and vegetable sculptures, and has been featured repeatedly on the Food Network, including a Fantasy Fruit Sculpture challenge (for which he won the gold metal in a rematch). Fruit and vegetable carving has been popular for food garnishing in Asia since ancient times and has evolved into works of art that outshine the food itself. Pastry chef Mike McCarey translates client’s ideas into confectionery masterpieces, making edible sculptures that are about as amazing as they get. Dogs, dinosaurs, musical instruments, shoes, sports equipment and dozens of other items get the sugar-and-flour treatment in sculptural cakes that are almost too beautiful to eat. Ray Duey of Chef Garnish uses apples, melons and other fruit as a medium for beautiful table arrangements. Duey is an acclaimed produce carver who uses small, sharp tools to carve fruit into stunning

Seinfeld and Kristy Yamaguchi. The subjects of his portraits have left comments on his website like this gem from Boy George: ““How fabulous! I’m a linguine head.”

Tamás Balla. This incredible artist animates food in ways you would never imagine, transforming ordinary fruits and loves of bread into pieces and parts of strange stories, complete with offbeat implications, curious perspectives and unique facial expressions.

Chinese artist Song Dong and a cast of builders created this ‘Biscuit City’ in a London department store. The scene depicts a traditional Asian city complete with a stadium and a church, and while Dong says he designed a few of the buildings, they mostly made it up as they went along. An estimated 72,000 biscuits were used along with tea, caramels and fruit shortcake.

Jason Mecier is a mosaic artist who creates portraits made of unexpected materials – namely, food. Potato chips, beans, hamburger buns, candy, cookies, noodles, and pretzels come together to portray the images of celebrities like Rosie O’Donnell, Rachel Ray, Jerry

DADDY’S BOY BY CASEY ARASA

Daddy’s Boy, the latest film release from queer film director Daniel Armando, whisks audiences from the barrio onto a gay porn set and behind the closed doors of a burlesque studio. “In Latino culture, and most cultures, men are taught to suppress their feelings and to never communicate them, especially to other men,” he says. “Daddy’s Boy explores connections among men as they allow themselves to become vulnerable.”

How so? When you grow up you learn that your father could only teach you what he knew; what was handed to him by his father. The decisions you make as a father subconsciously stay with your children forever. And as a son, you first see an example of what it means to be a man from what kind of man your father was. From him you learn what to do and sometimes, what not to do.

The film centers around Manuel (Jonathan Iglesias) and Max (Al Miro), making their way to New York City’s red light district; Manuel’s older brother, Jorge (James Korni), dancing away the emotional toll of an abusive relationship; and Fabian (Joe Lopez), a Puerto Rican father, hiding his homosexuality. When the worlds of these four men collide, they explore the depths of their gender and sexuality and each is changed forever.

What is the relationship with your father like now? He understands that I don’t need him like I use to and he misses those days. Today, we are more like friends. All I want now is for him to be happy in his life. Any anger or sadness I once held for him is gone. Why did you decide to set Daddy’s Boy in the NYC porn industry? I thought it would be interesting to see the characters in sexually vulnerable situations.

What inspired Daddy’s Boy? Daniel Armando: I was inspired by the relationship with my father. How it used to be one of a son trying to get the approval of a dad and now it has somewhat reversed.

14 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Vulnerability is a big theme in the film. Yes, I explore the idea of allowing oneself to be vulnerable physically, but not emotionally. I also explore the inability of men to communicate and articulate feelings, especially to other men.

FEATURE

The film seems to challenge what it means to be a man today. Many men remain grounded in an upbringing that prohibited them from exploring the feminine parts of their selves. Or, if they do, it’s more of a hush type of thing where no one talks about it. I hope it’s something that changes in the future. How does Daddy’s Boy expand from your previous film, WHAT IT WAS? Like Daddy’s Boy, WHAT IT WAS featured minorities tackling issues of sexual identity. I would love people to consider both films as a set where one (WHAT IT WAS) deals with women and the other (Daddy’s Boy) with men. How did you select the cast for the film? My goal was to get an ethnically diverse talent. I reached out to each of the four leads and worked with them individually, really hammering away at who their characters were. Why did you shoot the film in black and white? My cinematographer (Ryan Balas) introduced me to a lot of French New Wave directors and films; all shot in black and white. I instantly immersed myself in that world and thought it would aesthetically fit well with Daddy’s Boy. I wanted to give the film a vintage look like it was plucked out of that time period. What do you hope audiences walk away with at the end of Daddy’s Boy? I hope people leave with a sense of nostalgia and reflection. I love when a film can make me think about my life and my experiences. I especially hope it will inspire dialogue among men. Daddy’s Boy premieres at OutFest on Friday July 15th at 9:30PM. Actors Al Miro, James Koroni, composer Brett Walling and cinematographer Ryan Balas will be in attendance. For tickets visit www.novonovus.com

AVA’S IMPOSSIBLE THINGS BY CHRIS ASTRALA

Since creating her Soul Kiss Films in 2009, writer, director, producer Marina Rice Bader has been on an unstoppable roll. From Elena Undone, Anatomy of A Love Seen to Raven’s Touch and now “Ava’s Impossible Things”, Bader has been (on average) releasing a film a year. Continuously breaking grounds, she is now the first lesbian filmmaker who’s film (“Ava’s Impossible Things”) was acquired by Vimeo as part of its “Share the Screen” investment in emerging female filmmakers. Share the Screen”, launched at Sundance, is Vimeo’s new initiative they hope will help close the gender gap that is so pervasive in the entertainment industry. Marina Rice Bader founded Soul Kiss Films, an independent company dedicated to producing evocative, entertaining and compelling movies by women, for women and about women. Her first project out of the gate was to executive produce instant classic Elena Undone, followed by A Perfect Ending two years later. In 2014 Marina felt driven to go down a more authentic path, writing, directing and starring in Anatomy of a Love Seen, where she created an exciting new model of filmmaking not only during production, but with her creative distribution, earning much publicity. In keeping with the “do-it-her-way-ethos” Bader is known for, she will give the film its worldwide release as a rental on Vimeo on July 17th, the day after its Outfest screening. Fans around the world will be able to rent the film on Vimeo on any Internet-capable device for only $5.00 for a 48-hour rental period. Subtitled versions for a number of foreign languages will also be available including Spanish, Portuguese, French and German. “I love Vimeo’s ‘Everyone is welcome, come be part of our vibrant community, create your vision and share it with the world’ mentality. I’m honored, and can’t wait to share Ava’s journey,” says Bader. The heart-wrenching tale tells the story of Ava and her mother Faye, bonded by many things…unconditional love, a passion for the arts, a belief that magic exists, and an insidious disease that will one day end both their lives. “I have always had a love affair with movies, but it wasn’t until my early fifties that I had enough faith in myself to make the leap to actually creating them. I feel I’m just hitting my stride with American Ryder, a female ensemble action film shooting in 2017,” says Bader.

16 THESTANDARDPS.COM

We recently had the opportunity to chat with this trend-setting and innovative artist to get her take on the film industry and what she has in store for the future. Marina, thank you for taking the time out of what I can only imagine to be a crazy hectic schedule especially with Outfest right around the corner. So let’s get to it. The Standard Magazine: How does it feel having your film, Ava’s Impossible Things receive the very first Vimeo Share the

Screen investment aquisition (Congratulations BTW) and what effect do you think this fund will have on future filmmakers? Maria Rice Bader: I feel incredibly honored. When I got the news you could have knocked me over with a feather, so it took a minute to sink in. To focus on gender parity in filmmaking is so important for all of us out there with stories to tell, and I know many women are benefitting right now from this hopefully trend-setting initiative. I love Vimeo’s ‘Everyone is welcome, come be part of our vibrant community, create your vision and share it with the world’ mentality. I’m so grateful, and can’t wait to share Ava’s journey on the amazing Vimeo platform. TSM: Releasing the film on Vimeo the day after it’s premier will certainly get you major exposure, is that the main reason why you chose to do it that way and do you think that this will become the model for future movie releases? MRB: I love the direct contact this type of release gives me with my audience, and the fact that someone in Argentina or Iceland or France can enjoy it the same day we can here just feels right to me. It’s a great release model for content creators who want their work accessible to everyone, and want complete control over their project. I’m thrilled that Ava’s Impossible Things will be available on Vimeo VOD everywhere in the world that has Internet access on July 17. TSM: Can you tell us the story behind the story of Ava’s Impossible Things? MRB: I wanted to create a very personal journey that everyone could relate to revolving around family and love, and the inescapable complications that are part of those two universal themes. The character of Ava was written specifically for Chloe Farnworth, an actress I met while casting Anatomy of a Love Seen. She really stuck with me, so when it came time for a new project I already knew who I wanted in the lead and writing the film sort of started there, with the actress and the themes. I wrote the character of Faye, Ava’s mother, from my own perspective, mirroring what I would do in the situations I created for her. Some moments were really difficult to film, for both Susan Duerden, the phenomenal actress who plays her, and for me. We are both fierce mothers. I love her so much I’m writing a roll for her in the next film. TSM: What was your impetus for starting Soul Kiss Films? MRB: My lifelong love affair with movies, and the realization that if I didn’t go after my dream I would always regret it. It made sense to create women’s films and employ women and talk about what I know.

MARINA RICE BADER

TSM: What is the driving force that motivates you in your career? MRB: It sounds a bit cliché, but I wake up every day wanting to make a difference. Telling our stories is how I hope to create change in the way our community is experienced through film. Then there’s the fact that I just love it so much. When you begin your career at 53 there’s no letting the grass grow. TSM: What’s next for Marina Rice Bader? MRB: I’m in the first stages of American Ryder, a female-drivenaction-hero film. It’s a very different genre for me, but I couldn’t be more excited. Love, loss, patriotism, marriage and kids, friends and community...it’s all in this story. Forced into action by a terrorist threat, a traumatized war hero attempts to rescue members of her old unit while protecting her family and country against a new and deadly enemy. I can’t wait to share this amazing character with the world! Marina Rice Bader is set to world premiere her new feature film, Ava’s Impossible Things, at this year’s Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival. The film will screen on Saturday, July 16 at 4:00pm with Marina and cast in attendance. If it is the year of the woman, it is also definitely Marina’s time. EQCA UPDATE

WE WILL CONTINUE THE FIGHT BY RICK ZBUR

The horrific tragedy in Orlando hit Equality California close to home. Among the first people shot in the Pulse night club in Orlando was Laura, the cousin of Equality California board member and straight ally Mark Vargas. Laura was celebrating the personal success of one of her best friends who was with her. As Laura lay hospitalized in critical condition, Mark was at her side but could not tell her that her friend was among the 49 members of our community who did not survive. Whatever drove the shooter, it is clear that what took place in Orlando was an act of hate. That the LGBT community was targeted is a chilling reminder of how much work we have left to do to achieve full equality, acceptance and respect. Our community has suffered one of the worst tragedies in its history against a backdrop of the introduction of more than 200 anti-LGBT bills sweeping legislatures across the country, attempting to roll back our hard-won civil rights victories. In response to the shooting, Equality California has announced the launch of “Safe and Equal,” our campaign to end gun violence by advocating for tougher common sense gun safety laws at the federal and state levels, among other things. In the weeks and months ahead, we will relentlessly lobby lawmakers in Washington, D.C. and in Sacramento. We will also mobilize the LGBT community to support legislation to ban the sale of military-style assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines, and to

strengthen background checks at gun shows and in general to keep firearms out of dangerous hands. At the state level, Equality California is also supporting a package of gun safety legislation in California and we will aggressively lobby for its passage by the legislature and signing by Governor Jerry Brown. In addition, we’re evaluating Safety for All, a ballot initiative backed by California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. Acts of hate and violence are attempts to instill fear, pull us apart and set us back. But our movement has always been about coming together as a community and coming out bravely as individuals to fight for our civil rights and the basic dignity that all people deserve. We know in our hearts that our response should never be to give in, but to continue to live open and authentic lives and to continue to come together with our allies to advocate for full acceptance, respect and equality. As we look ahead, we will rededicate ourselves to defeat the hatred that led to these violent acts and to work to end the epidemic of gun violence that endangers LGBT lives every day. We will renew our commitment to ensure that every member of our community can live openly, authentically and safely. And we will always remember the victims of Orlando and dedicate the work ahead to them.

CRAFTING THE SWISH BY TOM TEITJEN

Matt Consola Is Building a Dance Music Empire One Smash at a Time. Swishcraft is dedicated to bringing positivity and excitement back to the dance floor through uplifting vocal house tracks driven by powerful lyrics and melodies. The brainchild of Matt Consola, a San Francisco based producer and DJ, the label launched in 2011. Five years later, it is still churning out the club smashes. It’s latest track, Toy Armada & DJ GRIND’s “One Night in Heaven” featuring Inaya Day just broke into the Billboard top ten. We spoke to Matt Consola about why he expects this will be the summer of Swishcraft. Swishcraft has an impressive roster of dance floor greats, including DJ GRIND, Joe Gauthreaux, Inaya Day, Abigail and Debby Holiday. Matt Consola: “Through my years in radio and DJing, I learned a lot about how artists get treated in this business and it’s not always nice or fair. I set out to make Swishcraft Music a company that felt like a family. Word has gotten out about how artists are treated here, as well as how we are not scared to try new ways of promoting and marketing to break through the clutter. Many come to Swishcraft through other artists we’ve worked with”. Do you see a day when these artists can go beyond gay dance floors and into straight clubs? Absolutely. As our world changes and being gay, lesbian, bi and transgender is more accepted, the need for music gays call our own and places to hear that music has become less necessary. We’ve already seen the effect

20 THESTANDARDPS.COM

on the gay club and bar scenes. Younger generations no longer feel the need to only go to gay establishments. They go where they enjoy the music. So it’s important that, as artists, we try to appeal to as large an audience as possible, while still being ourselves and writing from our personal perspectives. Who is one artist on Swishcraft that the world should be paying attention to now? (Laughing) There is no way I can answer that without putting myself in hot water with

all the artists on my label. What I will say is if you comb through our releases, I hope you will see artists who are bringing fun and positivity back to the dance floor. The club world and the circuit went through a very dark period of music for a while. Some of those tracks are classics today, while some were just angry, dark and bitter. And while the occasional bitchy track is always fun, months of bitchy tracks or wordless dubs are just depressing. There is no place for ‘depressing’ on my dance floor.

Do you have advice for the gay clubs struggling to fill their rooms? The music industry has always been a swinging pendulum. We go from the in-thing being super clubs and festivals to smaller venues and boutique clubs. Right now, at least in America, we are in a huge shift towards smaller boutique clubs that happen once a month. I’d tell club owners to embrace it and don’t be afraid to have multiple producers come in and take over your weekend nights. Are you referring to traveling parties like Matinee? Yes. I’ve been a resident DJ for Bearracuda, the world’s largest traveling Bear party, for eleven years. We started in a tiny 75 person piano bar in San Francisco as a place for Bears and guys who like bears, to hang out, socialize, snack on food, see performers and listen to some cool, eclectic, non-mainstream dance tunes. The space didn’t even have a dance floor! Now we’re in 56 cities in 11 countries.

What about those who call the festivals a passing fad? I don’t think they are a passing fad. Again, it’s the whole pendulum thing. I just came from playing a big four-day MANINFEST festival in Mexico City. In just four years, that event went from a two-day party to a four-day event. It attracts big global talent like DJs Tom Stephan, Ivan Gomez and Manual Carrera. Each night felt like a party in a different destination: one night in Spain, the next in Israel and then Portugal. When promoters do interesting events, and don’t just throw the same party with a different DJ, it makes a difference. In your opinion, what was last summer’s best dance song? 2015 saw the rise of vocal Deep House, Tech House and Tropical House. It finally took over Progressive House and EDM. The big trend became slower, broodier, sexier tracks that did great on radio. Songs like ZHU’s “Automatic” and Kygo with “Firestorm” and

pretty much everything that Sia put out. If I had to pick a favorite, it was Jess Glynne’s “Hold My Hand”, and not because Division 4 and I had an official remix on the American package. (Laughs) Also, “Let The Joy Rise” by Abigail feat Toy Armada & DJ GRIND is a special song. What do you expect will be the song for this summer? It’s too early to tell. I’m rooting for “One Night In Heaven” by Toy Armada & DJ GRIND featuring Inaya Day. However, Justin Timberlake, Calvin Harris & Rihanna, Pink and Sia are strong contenders. It’s going to be a tight race to the finish line. But no matter what the outcome, music is like a time capsule. You hear the track years later and it transports you right back in time to where you were when you first fell in love with that track. My wish for every release we do on Swishcraft is they become someone’s time capsules. Visit www.Swishcraftmusic.com

Any of these exciting adventures could make for the trip of a lifetime but all of them require international travel, meaning you have to be smart with your money and prepare ahead of time. 1. GET A CHIP CARD Before you start packing for your international trip, take a peek inside your wallet. Does your credit card have a chip? If you don’t know, check with your bank to see if they have chip cards. Chipenabled cards are designed to help reduce fraud and are the most convenient and safe option for cashless travel outside the U.S. There are two types of chip cards. Chip-PIN cards require you set a PIN for extra security. When traveling, you will most likely insert your card into a reader where you may be prompted for your PIN, so make sure you know how to “dip” your chip before leaving. Meanwhile chip-signature cards are also available but they may not work at all unattended automated kiosks. Make sure you know what card you have and how to use it properly. 2. DON’T GET DECLINED, SHARE YOUR ITINERARY Let your bank know when and where you’re traveling to help prevent international activity from triggering fraud alerts. You don’t want that romantic meal on the beach spoiled when your card gets turned down. If your bank offers the service, ask to set fraud alerts by email or texts sent to your phone. You’ll have peace of mind knowing that unauthorized charges can be quickly caught. 3. BUDGET WITH PREPAID If traveling on a budget, consider using a prepaid card to manage your spending. Just keep in mind that you’ll only have access to the amount you load it with. And if you’re visiting different countries, check out MasterCard’s Cash Passport. You can load multiple currencies onto this one prepaid card. Upon arrival follow these practices:

4. CHEAP CASH Once you land, you may need some cash for little things like tips, food or drinks. ATMs are generally the cheapest and most convenient way to get the local currency. 5. KNOW YOUR CURRENCY CONVERSION CHOICES Finally, some merchants and hotels may ask you at the register or check out if you’d like to be charged in either your home currency or the local currency. It’s important to know your options. Research shows that you generally get a better exchange rate and lower fees when paying in local currency. If you chose to pay with the home currency, there might be a foreign transaction fee, a conversion rate and additional fees from the merchants for the convenience of exchanging to your home currency at the point of sale. Some banks waive the conversion fee for their cards and you should see if yours does before you leave. The choice is yours, but understanding the fees first will prevent you from overpaying. That’s it, five money tips to keep in mind when traveling internationally. Now what are you waiting for? Go ahead and pack already... the trip of a lifetime is just a few checkpoints away.

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED… BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

Years from now, it’ll all seem so sweet. There’ll always be a soft place in your heart for your first kiss, your first I-love-you, and for the person who gave them to you. You’ll never forget the electricity of holding hands or the rush of being together even after, as in the new novel “What We Left Behind” by Robin Talley, you start to pull apart. Gretchen Daniels wasn’t sure why she didn’t tell her girlfriend, Toni, that they’d be attending college in different cities. Last spring, Toni applied to Harvard and Gretchen applied to Boston University – same city, opposite ends - both reasoning that they could at least spend weekends together. At the last minute, though, Gretchen decided to attend NYU. She didn’t tell Toni until the night before she left. They were juniors in their all-girl high school when Toni first saw Gretchen at a dance and was instantly in love. Everybody thought they were the cutest couple: Gretchen conferred upon Toni a newfound popularity. Toni taught Gretchen what it was like to be genderqueer – or, at least she tried. But the secret that Gretchen held all summer bugged Toni, and she was rightfully upset. She really didn’t have much to say to Gretchen, a silence complicated by Toni’s immersion into a campus group she joined. Freshmen weren’t allowed to be officers of the Undergraduate BGLTQIA Association but upperclassmen let her hang out with them and, under their tutelage; she began to explore labels for herself. She began to think about gender fluidity, and transitioning. Toni’s lack of communication baffled Gretchen, and she discussed it at length with her new BFF, Carroll, a gay man who loved New York as much as did Gretchen. He was just one of the new friends she’d acquired, but she missed Toni and the closeness they had. She didn’t quite understand why Toni was questioning so much about herself, and she wasn’t sure how she’d fit in her girlfriend’s life if Toni became Tony. Would that change, change everything? Better question: by the end of this book, will you care? I have my doubts. “What We Left Behind” is very, very slow; in fact, it sometimes seemed to me that it was twice as long as its 416 pages of overlydetailed, same-old dialogue and young adults who were way too

angst-y for my tastes. Yes, these kids do things that only increase the melodrama amongst themselves, which is ultimately not all that interesting but which creates an uneasiness in plot, making most of author Robin Talley’s characters mighty unlikeable. And yet, I persevered. I was hoping to learn something from Toni’s gender questioning. What I got instead was an abundance of language that seemed rather clinical and not always clear. Was that the point? Shrug. Romance readers may find a tiny smidge of amour here, if they’ve the time to look for it, but I really wasn’t a big fan of this book. For the most part, I think, “What We Left Behind” is a title that should be heeded. “What We Left Behind” by Robin Talley c.2015, Harlequin TEEN / $18.99 / $20.99 Canada 416 pages

THE AMAZON TRAIL SEARCHING FOR OLD DYKE TALES BY LEE LYNCH

The only information I had on old gay people when I came out was that we were doomed to be alone and thus miserable. Oh, and lesbians would have leathery skin while gay men would become pitiful predators. At least, that’s how old perverts were portrayed in the pulps, and in non-fiction about criminology and juvenile delinquency. First off, let’s define “old.” I’m seventy and happier than I’ve ever been. If you’re under, say, 64, you think I’m old. If you’re over seventy you think I’m a spring chicken. One of my Tai Chi instructors is 80, the other is 88. My best friend is 81 and still writing novels. It’s impossible to define old. I couldn’t look leathery if I tried, nor could any of the dykes or gay men I know. I’ve seen plenty of people who might be described that way, gay or not, but they’ve usually spent years broiling in the sun on beaches other than Fire Island or Herring Cove in Provincetown. It’s funny how, most of my life, perfect strangers recoiled at the sight of my androgyny. With white hair I’ve become invisible, even to other dykes. Where once I’d get a smile or nod of recognition in

26 THESTANDARDPS.COM

the street in response to my own, the gaze of younger lesbians slides right off me, like I’m a lamppost or a (shudder) straight person. In my thirties and forties, I made up old lesbians in my stories. Perhaps I was looking for my elders. There may have been many around, but the generations before me were so very closeted I was aware only of a vacuum. Once I got to know some actual true-to-life old dykes, I totally forgot there was an age difference. They treated me as an equal and we developed long, respectful friendships. But I did such stupid stuff as a kid, made such risky, reasonless decisions; I could have used the guidance of an old dyke. In those younger years I was Alice falling down one rabbit hole after another. Could I have learned from old lesbians and gay men or would my eyes have slid away from them the way baby dyke eyes do from me? Would I have listened? Yes, I was like that, very respectful of experienced people. As a matter of fact, I longed for such counsel, or at least for tales from people like me. Would I have used their hard-won knowledge? Would I have

followed recommended paths? I have no doubt I would have—and asked for detailed maps. Would old gays have given me the kind of advice I needed? It would have been tricky for them to even associate with gay kids. Say I doctored my birth certificate (which I most certainly did) so I could go to gay bars. Say Joe Gay or Josie Gay, age 64, taught me how. Say my mother, a teacher, found out, or, worse, the bar was raided. Could Josie or Joe trust that this scared child would withstand a browbeating aimed at naming names? Very few of us have biological or adoptive lesbian mothers. Where can we find guidance for our early gay adulthood? A local physician calls our mutual friends, the pianist and the handydyke (both 70 plus), her lesbian mothers. The pianist tells of the day a younger woman rushed up to her in the grocery store and announced that she and the handydyke were her lesbian aunties. The pianist knew another young lesbian, in the military, who had her suicide carefully planned out until two gay men stepped in to save her life. She also talks about a student, a homeless high school lesbian who lived with her and the handydyke for a year and who once said, “I wonder what an old lesbian looks like?” There’s an obvious crying need for links between our young and old. The Old Lesbian Oral Herstory Project, * started by Arden Eversmeyer in 1997, seeks to document our lives. Books published by the project offer our stories. I would have devoured every word right up into my thirties, looking for who I was and who I could become. The Trevor Project has a huge presence on Twitter that seeks to encourage gay and transgendered kids. Reportedly, 40% of homeless youth are LGBT. They so need adults to model themselves after, ways of living gay to try on, in order to find themselves. Some have lost their families; some have families to whom they’re unable to relate. Who can hold their hands when they’re slipping on the icier, dicier spots of life? In whose footsteps can they follow on the paths of relationships? There are more and more visible role models: Edie Windsor, Del Martin, Phyllis Lyon, Ellen Degeneres, Greg Louganis, Anderson Cooper, Janis Ian, who give gay kids something to strive for. But what about the non-celebrities, the lesbian Boy Scout leader, the gay male crossing guard, the hairdressers and auto painters, the farmers and pilots—how do we get them into the lives of lost children, LGBT college students, young gay barflies? Wouldn’t any of us, even now, love a gay grandparent who could teach us to garden or build a boat and rap our knuckles, or at least warn us, at any age, when we leap into the arms of ridiculously incompatible lovers? The good news is that now we’ve begun to have voices, we have started to display our images; we know the young people are out there, seeking as we did. Our very openness is a way of offering ourselves. www.oloc.org/projects/herstory.php

HOT SUMMER NIGHTS Party, the hilarious Off-Broadway smash hit about 7 friends who play “truth or dare” at a party... and wind up revealing everything! The wildly popular comedy depicts a group of gay men getting together for their regular evening of drinks and games. Tonight, the game is a gay version of “Truth or Dare” called “Fact Or Fantasy”. True-life stories are shared, fictional encounters related, and fantasies often require the player to remove some clothing. By the end of the evening, everyone is nude - laughing and dancing together in a great show of brotherhood. Playwright David Dillon says, “Party is not about flesh, but celebrates the fact that, as a group, we are positive and honest about our sexuality and free from a lot of the inhibitions and hang ups that

exist in other groups.” Party has a terrific wide appeal. According to a cast member, “They come for the nudity, but come again because it is such a funny, positive and affirming event. We’ve had gay men, straight couples, bachelorette parties, and all sorts of people in the audience and everyone has a great time!” Talented performer John Fryer and young Los Angeles actor Jacob Betts as the naïve gay newcomer “Andy” join Desert Rose Playhouse company members Miguel Arballo, Jason Hull, Allan Jensen, Kam Sisco and Robbie Wayne. Party plays now through July 31. For tickets and info visit www.desertroseplayhouse.org

LIFE’S A DRAG IT’S GETTING HOT IN HERE BY PINKIE MERINGUE SHIMMER

Happy July all of you wonderful, Fabulous, Amazing people out there! I trust that you are all enjoying your summer. Well as you know the Pinkie Meringue Shimmer household resides in Palm Springs. I have been out here for over 16 years and I don’t think you can ever get used to an outdoor temperature of 124 degrees. And I already told my friends and family back east that I better not hear anyone of the mutter the phrase “It’s a DRY Heat” You get out here in 6-inch pumps, 3 layers of tights, and makeup caked on like Spackle… LOL…oh the joys of being Pinkie in the summer in the desert! Speaking of drag in the summer. The words “Pinkie, would you mind coming to our event as Pinkie and greet and mingle and have your photos taken…” Yes I fuss about it, but come on; we are in Palm Springs, California. People work their whole lives so that they can afford to come here on vacation and see all the wonderful drag performers that the desert has to offer. We do add a lot of color to our surroundings. Over the years I have learned a thing or two about summer drag. I will say that finding the right foundation is crucial. I have found one that I really like; it is by DMK Skincare and cosmetics. My friend Danne King runs the company. It is a light foundation that breathes. It is important that before you apply your face makeup to be sure and use a good primer. This will help your foundation sit well and it won’t stop your face from sweating but it will help your makeup from running. So that and a LOT of powder and honey, be sure to have yourself a hand towel close by to pat the sweat from your forehead. Oh and you will notice as the seasons change so do the wardrobes of your dear drag queens. It becomes about comfort and fabrics that breathe. And of course no matter how hot it is; you will be sure to have no problem getting a drag queen in a convertible as long as you tell her it is for a parade! You know here in Southern California we are blessed with so many wonderful drag personalities to entertain you and you can bet that you can count on your favorites to jump in and help you anytime that you need some fundraising help. Just look back at the Queen of the Desert contest that benefited Desert AIDS Project on June 1st. The most important winner in this contest was Desert AIDS Project as we, together, raised over $60,000 for Desert AIDS Project. Well friends I think it is time to close this installment of Pinkie’s Corner. I don’t want to bring anyone down, but I must say a few words about what happened in Orlando. We lost 49 of our brothers and sisters. It

LEGALLY SPEAKING

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED? BY CHRISTOPHER HERITAGE

What should I do if I get harassing phone calls or emails from creditors? Here are some practical steps to follow: 1. Do you really owe the money? If so, work out a payment plan to pay it off. If you don’t cooperate, the creditor will most likely take you to court and get a judgment against you. Then they may be able to attach your wages or other income and get paid by taking away a substantial portion of what you have to live on every month. 2. If you don’t owe the money and can prove it, contact an attorney to help you defend your position. 3. If you simply can’t afford to pay the bill, consider bankruptcy. It can give you the opportunity to get rid of your debts and start a fresh life. Even if the creditor has already received a judgment from the court to take your income, it can be stopped when you file a bankruptcy petition. Where should I hide my Will? Wait a minute - why do you want to hide it? Does it contain bad news for some of your relatives and friends and you don’t want them to see it? Are you afraid that it might get lost if you keep it in your desk or file at home and you don’t have a really special place for it? Well, please think twice. If you hide it well, or forget where it is, chances are no one will find it at all. What’s the benefit in that? In your Will, you named a person, and probably a second, backup person, as executor of your estate. You trust them enough to put them in charge of everything you own. They are the ones who should have your specific instructions on where the Will is. When you are gone, your executor will need it right away, not after a long search for where you might have hidden it. Should you put your original signed Will in your safe deposit box? Definitely not a good idea! No-one can get into your box without a court order, and your executor will have a tough time getting one without the Will to prove he or she is the executor. If you must put it there, make your appointed executor a signer on your safe deposit box account so no court order will be required to open the box to access the Will (and any other important items or documents that you keep there, because they will all be needed). If the Will is truly lost, like in a fire or flood, it is still possible

34 THESTANDARDPS.COM

to resurrect it. After you sign it, a scanned copy of the Will (and all your other important documents) can be stored electronically in “the cloud” and can be accessed anytime. We set up “cloud” storage for our clients’ estate planning documents so they can relax, knowing that everything is securely stored in case the original documents disappear. Be sure to give your account name and password to your proposed executors and attorney. Am I a criminal if I try to bring about my own death in California? Is anyone else going to be in trouble if they help me? Suicide or attempted suicide is not a crime in California. However, until now, it has been a felony for a person under any circumstances to deliberately aid, or advise, or encourage another to commit suicide. In 2016, a new “assisted suicide law” has taken effect, and aiding critically ill patients with 6 months or less to live, under very strict and narrow guidelines, is no longer a crime. In these cases, a patient must be mentally competent and personally request, twice verbally and once in writing over a specific period of time, that a physician prescribe a life-ending drug. Noone, including the physician, may administer the drug to the patient. The patient must take it on his or her own.

What should I say to an officer if I am stopped for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol? You must cooperate with the authority, but do not agree to answer any questions or to allow a search of yourself or your property. Simply state that you want your attorney present before any statements, examinations or other exercises occur. You can be required to take a breath test or blood test to determine your blood alcohol level, if the officer has probable cause to believe you are driving under the influence. There may be penalties if you refuse to take these. But you are not required to take field coordination tests (for example, walking a straight line) or alcohol screening tests. If you are arrested or cited, call an attorney right away.

signed the paper, and is the person claimed to be. The notary affixes his or her official stamp by the signature.

What does a Notary Public Do? In California, a notary assures that a person signing a legal document is actually the person he or she claims to be. A notary must see photo identification (driver license or passport), and look carefully at the signer to make sure it is the same person. The notary will compare the signature on the document to the signature on the ID card. The notary then signs a sworn statement on the document that the signer appeared in person,

Notaries do not read the signed document and can’t guarantee anything about its validity or legality. They simply affirm that the person who signed it is the person who stands before them. A notary may also confirm an oath which verifies a person’s sworn statement of the truth in a document. The person swears under oath that the statement is true, and the notary swears that the person took the oath.

FITNESS

STEPS TO BECOME A MORNING EXERCISER BY ADAM SINICKI

Exercising first thing in the morning is a goal that many of us share. The idea here is that by working out in the earlier hours, we will be able to get the day off to a ‘good start’ and at the same time avoid letting other things get in the way that could interrupt our good intentions. Only there’s just one problem: waking up early enough to work out before the morning commute is hard. And waking up with enough energy and motivation to exercise is harder still. So the question is: how do you go about convincing yourself to work out in those early hours when you don’t have any energy or motivation and all you want to do is hit ‘snooze’? PREP AND PICK-UP ‘Prep and pick-up’ is a popular concept in self-help and selfdevelopment and essentially refers to the process of setting yourself up while you feel motivated and energetic so that there’s less to do when you’re not. A great example of this is to set yourself up for a workout the night before. You can do that by laying out your gym gear (and your exercise equipment if you’ll be training at home) and preparing anything else necessary the night before so that it will be ready for you when you wake up the next day and all you have to do is slip them on and get started. GIVE IT TEN MINUTES While working out in the morning is a good idea in principle, working out too soon after you wake up is not a good idea at all. That’s because your spine will be more supple and flexible after a long night’s sleep, meaning that you can easily hurt yourself if you engage in strenuous exercise. The solution is to be up and around for at least ten minutes first and to warm up for a while before you begin any real heavy lifting. LITTLE AND OFTEN If you’re tired and achy from a night’s sleep then the thought of getting up and right away doing two hours’ worth of training is going to be incredibly painful and off-putting. That’s why it’s better to aim for ‘little and often’ which will let you form a new habit that’s easier to stick to. This will also be less hard on your body if you’re prone to pulled muscles and other problems.

Training twenty minutes every morning is just as helpful as training two hours three times a week – and probably better for you. WAKE UP REFRESHED Ideally the best thing to do is to prevent yourself from feeling tired in the morning at all. That’s easier said than done obviously, but there are a few things you can do to increase your chances of waking up with the required energy. The first is to try waking yourself up during REM sleep at which point you will be sleeping the lightest. To do this you should simply try to wake up after a number divisible by 90 – as you start a new sleep cycle after every 90 minutes (account for the 20 minutes you go take to get to sleep). There are apps out there that can help you to measure which stage of sleep you’re in too and these will wake you up when you are in lighter stages at times close to when you need to be up and about. Also useful is to make sure you drink adequate amounts of water prior to going to sleep. Often the reason we feel groggy in the morning is not that we are overtired, but that we are dehydrated. Drink a pint of water before bed and this might help. Lastly, make sure you are sleeping in a darkened room with no phones or LEDs breaking that darkness and as little ambient noise as possible. Get to bed and wake up at the same times every day and avoid eating too much or drinking caffeine right before bed.

FEAR SETTING FOR STRESS REDUCTION

BY ADAM SINICKI

One of the biggest reasons that we feel stressed on a regular basis is that we feel as though there are things hanging over us. That or we’re afraid of something that’s going to happen – something that is up coming. For instance, you might be afraid of a speech you know you have to give in two weeks and you may feel it hanging over you like a black cloud. Alternatively you might be stressed because of debt. But if you really look hard at that stress you’ll probably be able to ascertain that it isn’t so much the debt itself you’re stressed about but rather what you think that debt could lead to. You’re scared of getting into trouble with the law. Or you’re scared that your partner will find out your bad spending habits got you into debt and so left you. Fear is what leads to stress. And stress leads to… suffering? Point is, these kinds of fears affect us all but they aren’t helpful. That’s why you need to look for ways to deal with them. And one great strategy you can use to do exactly that is Tim Ferriss’ ‘Fear Setting Technique’. WHAT IS FEAR SETTING? The basic idea behind fear setting is that you’re going to take your fears and then define them. By defining them, you turn them into more effective targets and you give yourself more concrete means of tackling them. This is the basic idea behind fear setting but we’re applying them slightly differently. When Tim Ferriss explained fear setting in his book The Four Hour Workweek, he meant for the technique to be used to help us overcome fears that were preventing us from living our lives to the fullest – from taking chances or trying to live our dreams. In this case though, we’re going to use the same technique as a way to combat stress and fear that is simply preventing us from being as happy and healthy as we otherwise could be. Really this technique is simply an example of CBT – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – and specifically of ‘thought challenging’ and ‘hypothesis testing’. HOW TO USE FEAR SETTING To begin with, you’re going to sit down and write down all the things you’re afraid of and all the thoughts that are causing you stress. Be specific and break the bigger things down into smaller constituents. For instance then, don’t just write ‘Work’, write ‘A fear of not meeting deadlines’ or ‘a fear of being fired’. Be honest with

yourself and don’t leave anything out. Now, what you’re going to do next is to go down the list and write down an honest appraisal of how likely each of those things is. So for instance, you’ll write down how likely you are to get fired. Remember, it’s actually illegal to fire people without a very good reason and if you haven’t had prior warnings, an employer would probably be in trouble for firing you. Once you’ve gone through and done that, the next thing you’re going to do is look at each fear and then think how you would deal with it if it did happen. Come up with a great contingency plan that makes the best of a bad situation. In some cases you can even turn negatives into positives. Afraid of being fired? Well then come up with your plan: Maybe set up your own business? Or take on a simpler job as a personal trainer? What if your partner left you? Well it would be heartbreaking yes but there would be upshots too. Maybe you could go travelling. If it didn’t work out, then presumably, it wasn’t meant to be anyway. And don’t all these things just make you stronger? Just add to the rich tapestry that is your life? Finally, look at the items and ask yourself: will it do any good to be worried about these things now? CLOSING WORDS Once you’ve done this, you should find that your stress becomes much more manageable and that it’s robbed somewhat of its power. The things you’re afraid of are very often unlikely and not as bad as they seem at first. Now, each time one of these fears makes it known in your mind, just remind yourself of everything we’ve gone over. Be practical about your fears and you may just find they disappear.
