CHANGING THE FACE OF COMICS BY CHRIS ASTRALA Writers and illustrators of comic books are talented individuals who tell stories as well as illustrate them. Comic book illustrators who identify as LGBT use that identity in the production of their work. This can be by way of cartoon fantasy depicting a tolerant and accepting world, a means of entertainment for the LGBTQ community or as a form of
activism. Several have had a significant impact on creating LGBT characters in mainstream comics, such as DC Comics or Marvel Comics. Several LGBT comic book artists and writers are household names. They are recipients of awards within the comic book industry, including Lambda Literary Awards and specialized comic book awards
including Eisner Awards. A number of these individuals are academics at educational institutions that specialize in the arts. The following is a list of outstanding LGBT comic book illustrators and writers. They defy any category. They are changing the face of comics. Thinking way outside the box, they show us that there’s no one-way to be queer.
ROSALARIAN I didn’t intend to make queer comics. I just made comics about the kinds of people I knew, the kind of person I was, and queer people are everywhere. But I did want to make sure my queer characters were more than just their queerness, more than dramatic searches for partners while dealing with homophobia and sadness. I send my queer characters on adventures. They fight monsters, they solve mysteries, and they crack jokes. It gets depressing to see so much media reinforcing how being queer is such a struggle. It can also be quite pleasant. I want queer readers to have some hope that their lives won’t be limited by their sexuality. Megan “Rosalarian” Gedris had a huge epiphany about herself at Girl Scout camp: she was going to become a comic book artist. She has written and illustrated thousands of pages, and has been published in various anthologies and magazines, as well as self-publishing several titles. She lives in Chicago.

JAMAICA DYER “Developing a comic book story is such a personal thing-- you are a team of one or two in indie comics -- and you have the ability to explore all the little grey areas in sexuality that aren’t very mainstream. I don’t purposefully create queer stories, but the characters end up evolving that way because of who I am. When I was a teenager, there wasn’t anyone on TV like me -- that’s changed and it’s great that we have more and more queer characters emerging -- but I could find my own complex little niche being expressed in comics, and it made me feel less alone.” Jamaica Dyer is a comic book artist and writer most recently seen in Heavy Metal and Phonogram: The Immaterial Girl. She’s self-publishing a horror series “Lake Imago” and creating autobio comics daily. She started getting published in 2009 with her breakout graphic novel “Weird Fishes”. TED CLOSSON Ted Closson is a writer and artist living in Maine. He graduated with an MFA in Art from the University of Houston in 2012. His comics and visual work have been published in Beyond: A Queer Sci-fi and Fantasy Comics Anthology, the Alphabet Anthology from Stacked Deck Press, Black Warrior Review, The Rumpus, The Good Men Project, Splash of Red, Storychord, University of Houston Alumni
Quarterly and The Tier One Anthology. He is currently working on a graphic novel. Representation matters. The stories we tell one another, they matter. They describe the arc of our potential. They shelter us in difficult terrain. They grant us sincerity, and dignity, and legitimacy. They seed the collective unconscious and bridge gaps in the understanding others have of us where no argument or polite conversation can. They tell us who we want to be. They save us. This is why I must tell stories. This is why I feel I must tell LGBTQ stories.

COVER GREG FOX Greg Fox is the artist/writer of the comic strip “Kyle’s Bed & Breakfast”, the ongoing story of a group of gay guys living in a B&B in a picturesque harbor town, full of laughter, romance, drama, intrigue, and sheer wackiness. According to Fox, “I wanted to create the sort of TV show I’d want to watch in comic strip form, full of a diverse cast of captivating LGBT characters dealing with life and getting themselves into all kinds of trouble!” The comic strip is currently syndicated to a variety of LGBT publications across North America, and widely read online at www.kylecomics.com, and on Facebook. Fox has published four collections of Kyle’s B&B, the first of which was a Lambda Literary Award Finalist, and a collection of figure drawings, “Kyle’s B&B Presents: Drawings of Drew” featuring Kyle’s B&B character Drew Danvers. Fox currently
resides in Northport, Long Island, New York, busily working on new episodes of Kyle’s B&B, and several other book projects for
JON CAIRNS Jon Cairns is a freelance comic writer/ artist whose past work includes the ongoing web comics Alpha Flag and Untitled SF, as well as other short comics like O-Type Hypergiant, My Best Friend’s Suicide and various other short stories produced for print or the web. His passports have more stamps than pages, so the easiest place to find him is on the Internet. When given carte blanche to create a story, odds are good it’ll be set in space-- probably featuring hunks and body hair. “The beautiful thing about comics is that the barrier to entry is low—they cost very little to produce, and there aren’t any monolithic gatekeepers telling creators what they can and cannot draw. As a gay man, relying on my own personal experience helps to make my stories more authentic. Consequently, my comics naturally include queer themes and gay characters.”

Her graphic novel, Crossplay, is about a group of friends exploring sexuality and gender identity through fandom, and will be out from Iron Circus Comics in 2017. Why I draw: “As a child, I sought out representation of myself in books and the media around me, and rarely found it. As an adult, I focus on creating it. of interacting with and understanding the world around me. Even with queer issues becoming a part of the larger conversation in our culture, we still have a long way to go. The majority of the American public isn’t even comfortable with feminine sexuality—which is so basic! — So it’s going to be a while longer until they’re comfortable with the idea of sexuality and gender being fluid. I recognize there is still very much a need for political fan fic and stories about the world that we want to exist in. If people can read my work and find it relatable, moving, and helpful to them then that means I’ve done my job.”

STAN LEE
A MARVELOUS ICON He built Marvel Comics and laid the foundation for today’s blockbuster superhero movies. One of the godfathers of comics, Stan Lee is a comic book writer, editor, publisher, media producer, television host, actor, and former president and chairman of Marvel Comics. He co-created Spider-Man, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, the X-Men, and many other iconic characters. He led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation. His cameos in Marvel movies are a beloved feature of every film. Lee was inducted into the comic book industry’s Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1995, and received a National Medal of Arts in 2008. Stan Lee is a revered comic-book creator who co-launched superheroes like the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and the X-Men for Marvel Comics. This is a guy who, in a manic burst of imagination a halfcentury ago, helped bring into being The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, The X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, and the dozens of other Marvel titles he so famously and consequentially penned at Marvel Comics in his axial epoch of 1961 to 1972. Lee started intellectual-property company POW! Entertainment in 2001 and the following year published his autobiography, Excelsior! The Amazing Life of Stan Lee. Later in the decade he received a Medal of Arts honor from President George W. Bush and launched the History Channel show Stan Lee’s Superhumans, a series that looked at people with remarkable skills and abilities. Still, the greatest salesman the American comics industry ever had, he continues hawking. Lee and the company he helms, POW! Entertainment announces a dizzying number of new projects every year. Perhaps most important for today’s Hollywood, he crafted the concept of an intricate, interlinked “shared universe,” in which characters from individually important franchises interact with and affect one another to form an immersive fictional tapestry — a blueprint from which Marvel built its cinematic empire, driving nearly every other studio to feverishly do the same. His cameos in Marvel movies are a beloved feature of every film. Stan Lee will be attending the very first COMIC CON Palm Springs in August. This will be Lee’s first visit to the desert, and he will

You know that summer is in full force when all the biggest artists are releasing their hottest jams. So which will go down as 2016’s Song of the Summer? Of course we know the mainstream contenders. Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling”, Drake’s “One Dance” featuring Kyla and Wizkid, Meghan Trainor’s “Me Too”, Rihanna’s “This Is What You Came For” and Ariana Grande’s “Into You” are all ruling the airwaves. But what about the dance floor? Here are some of the top albums vying for 2016’s club song of the summer. “Out There” / Kristine W / (Fly Again) Billboard Magazine’s Dance Artist of the Decade returns with the first single from her soon-to-be released album. At its core, the track is a lush, theatrical ballad that provides the perfect platform for Kristine’s powerful vocals. Its message is to appreciate life as a journey and to never give up as what you desire may be closer than you think. Her groovilicious anthem about being into someone and owning the attraction with every fiber of your being is funky with a capital ‘f’. Music reviewers have been comparing Vice’s retro sound to Daft Punk and Chromeo but this girl’s tongue-in-cheek lyrical style and musical prowess are distinctly her own.
“My Heart Beats Faster” / Emoni Washington (Swishcraft Music) This vocal deep house track featuring upandcoming songstress Emoni Washington has been getting a lot of attention in gay clubs this summer. The original, co-produced by Matt Consola and Leo Frappier, has a lively, pulsating beat that will get hearts racing on the treadmill and at afternoon tea dances. The remixes by London’s Rich B (Tech House/NuDisco), Australia’s Division 4 (Deep House), Germany’s Sven Kirchhof (Trance/Big room), America’s Dirty Pop (Progressive EDM), Argentina’s Cristian Poow (Deep House), and America’s Tweaka Turner all take the track into different hours of the night making this the perfect song to raise the energy with any time of the day. “Touch The Sky” / Division 4 / (Swishcraft Music) Australia’s Robert Ladič AKA Division 4 returns with his follow up to last winter’s club floor groover, “Shake It”. This latest is a decidedly smoother, indie house track complete with infectious hooks, heart pounding baselines, rhythmic permissions and retro throwback keyboards. The remix package includes mighty interpretations of the song including one from Barry Harris of Thunderpuss who carries the original into peak hour territory with progressive keyboard stabs, rolling pop tribal beats and pulsating baselines. Newcomer Raw Voltage takes the track in a darker deep house meets tech house direction with sultry vocals, swirling keyboards, warm baselines, and an infectious handclap driven classic house beat.

LATINO HEAT BLOWS INTO THE WINDY CITY BY TOM TIETJEN Mexico City-based DJ Alex Acosta headlines Chicago’s Market Days Party. Market Days Weekend is a popular Chicago festival that features live bands and performances during the day, followed by late-night dance parties. In the Windy City, the weekend is even bigger than Pride. To celebrate, Neverland, the Chicago party known for its elaborate themes and production, is throwing its most extravagant event ever. Drawing inspiration from the costumes, the story, and the men of the blockbuster film, 300, Neverland’s Imperial Harem will take place at Club Metro. Mexico City-based DJ Alex Acosta will be spinning, his first time since the very first Market Days Neverland three years ago. We spoke to him to learn what he has in store. Tom Tietjen: What do you like most about Chicago? Alex Acosta: Chicago is a unique city, very characteristic. The loop, the parks, the beach, and the architecture... they’re all very unique. I tell people it’s where old classic meets modern. I have so many friends there. I love it. You headlined Neverland’s very first Market Days. What was that like? I had never been to Market Days so I honestly didn’t know what to expect! I remember being blown away by the production that the Neverland team created. The décor, the performers, the staging… the costumes for the go-go dancers were fierce and there was even a drum guy banging on the bongos! It was a fun night, for sure! I had never seen anything like it. It was all very entertaining. How was the crowd? Everyone had a fantastic time. I really connected with them. There were a couple of performances during my set but I didn’t have to stop the music, which I always appreciate. Did you get a chance to experience the day festival? Yes, I walked around Halsted, enjoyed the crowds, the live shows, all of it.

What do you have planned for Imperial Harem? I’ve been working on new tracks to premiere and some new remixes like my rework of Ariana Grande’s “Into You” and Sam Smith’s “Naughty Boy”. You can expect lots of high-energy drums, plenty of peaks and other musical surprises! I promise to start the Market Days weekend off properly. For many, ‘harem’ connotes the idea of groups of attractive men with oiled bodies lounging nude by spas and pools. Is that where you imagine the night will go? (Laughing) Add to that some sexy grooves and beats and, for sure, that’s where we’re headed! How do you measure a successful night? When there is a connection between the DJ and the crowd that allows us all to not care about the outside world. It’s just us: the people and the DJ. I love seeing the after-videos that fans post. AUTHOR HANS HIRSCHI (MIDDLE) WITH HUSBAND ALEX AND SON SASCHA
SHORTS: Stories From Beneath the Rainbow is peppered with characters not usually written about in gay fiction. There is a dried up spinster, a Navajo dyke, a completely unfiltered twink, a Somali refugee who experiences his first same-sex kiss and a transgendered doctor. Every story looks at LGBTQ life from a different angle and perspective. Collectively, they are meant to show the humanity of the community and how, like heterosexuals, queer people struggle with self-esteem, fall in love, help others and fight to survive even the harshest of realities. It’s the latest work from Hans Hirschi, the author behind the gay fiction darlings, Willem of the Tafel and Living The Rainbow: A Gay Family Triptych. Hirschi is known in gay literary circles as “The Queen of Unconventional Happy Endings” which is why his latest project is

raising eyebrows. In SHORTS: Stories From Beneath the Rainbow, several stories end not so happily. Hans Hirschi explains. For the first time, you’ve written several stories that end sadly. Why? Hans Hirschi: The format of the short story is different than a novel. In shorts, we merely get a glimpse at someone’s life for a bit, and then we leave them to their life. There is always the possibility that the next chapter in their story will be better. Stories do remain, as a whole, very hopeful. I’m an optimist. I do believe in a better future for humankind, although it seems naïve, especially after Pulse Nightclub. But if we don’t
Wouldn’t that be nice? We love youth and superficial beauty. I don’t see that changing any time soon. I’m really glad that I no longer have to do the whole dating thing. As a married man with a son, I can focus on what really matters: the inner values of people. I don’t have to fret over rejection because I’m not the perfect male with sculpted abs and a defined six-pack. There’s so much more to life. When did you write “Getting Married”? How does it reflect on your own marriage? I once got engaged to a woman with a daughter. It was shortly before I came out. I realize now it was a completely crazy attempt at creating an instant family and never having to prove anything again. “Getting Married” is a very short glimpse into the brutality of that situation; the suffering the groom is going through and the loveless marriage that awaits the poor bride. This is the first time you write about the lesbian experience. How did that come about? People always say that a good author can write about any kind of character. I decided early on to try and branch out, and capture more of the rainbow. I wrote two stories: one about a Navajo mother and another about a public servant. They are two very different characters and two very different stories. I’ll let the ladies decide if I got it right.
believe things can get better, why would we even care to get engaged and work for that future? Every now and then, there is some good news, like Italy’s decision to allow for civil unions. It’s slow, but it’s progress.
And the trans experience? There has been so much talk about what it means to be trans lately. So many of my friends, gay and straight, don’t understand what it means to be trans, and that trans isn’t just an orientation or condition. Being trans means so many things. “Alex” is an attempt at showing that trans persons can live full and happy lives. Most of the trans stories I’ve read end rather glumly. They deserve more happy endings, as we all do. What do you hope readers get from the book?
What does the community need to do to make sure we remain on the path to rainbow equality? I think we need to acknowledge a couple of things. First: we’re no better than the rest of society and second, the fight never stops. For every great victory there will be a backlash. We need to never give up, never stop working for our rights. Right now, our trans siblings are in the crossfire. Only together will we prevail. One story in the book, “The Loner”, paints a sad picture on how the gay community views middle-aged gay men. Do you think the community needs to get over its Peter Pan syndrome?
I hope they get an interesting look into the variety that is LGBTQ life. We’re more than stereotypes, and we are as deeply flawed as anyone. I’m not trying to preach, but merely show a kaleidoscope of different scenes of people’s lives, and I hope readers enjoy it. ALWAYS OVERBOOKED… BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
Some things, you never forget. You’ll never forget your first kiss, for instance. You’ll always remember your favorite teacher and lessons learned. The day you got your pet, a delicious meal eaten, a great vacation, all burned into your mind. And, as you’ll see in “Boy Erased: A Memoir” by Garrard Conley, you’d never forget the ultimatum your father gave you. From the time he was in fifth grade, Garrard Conley understood that he was a sinner. It became apparent with the thrill he got looking at men’s underwear, and the fantasies he had about other boys. Those things made his stomach flip-flop, and chilled his soul: “the increasingly blurry God” he’d known all his life would surely send him straight to Hell for being a homosexual. Or, at least that’s what his parents believed. Being gay was one of the worst things imaginable in Conley’s Baptist church; his father had received a call to serve the Lord, making homosexuality an even worse “stain” on their family. Conley tried to will his sexuality away by having a girlfriend, a God-fearing “girl of his dreams” who came from the same Ozarks church community. Somewhat repulsed by her, he tried to ignore his gayness, begging God to take it away. “Please help me to be pure.” But it didn’t work. At college, Conley met a boy who outed him, then left him with his shame. Told by his father to accept a “cure” or leave his home, family, and education, nineteen-year-old Conley finally agreed to check himself into Love in Action (LIA), a Memphis “nondenominational fundamentalist… organization” affiliated with Focus on the Family, a “treatment” facility that would “fix” his sexuality. “I could never count the number of times I’d sinned against God,” Conley said, but LIA made him do it; he was asked to investigate family sins, and remember things he needed to forget. He knew he was facing years of constant prayer and shame without his journal, literature, or worldly ideas he’d begun to embrace in college; he was suicidal, angry, and he was still gay - but suddenly, with an unlikely source of support… “Boy Erased” is one of those books that’ll make you think. And think, and think. There are so many nuances, so many things about this book to dislike: author Garrard Conley says that he recreated from memory much of what happened because of confidentiality rules at LIA. Then again, he admits that there’s a lot he can’t remember, or has blocked

out. Even his mother refuses to talk about what happened, but what they do remember is painfully near incomprehensible. And yet, Conley shows so much emotion in this memoir that it’s impossible to look away – and that includes a vibrant cord of anger that coexists beside a dawning realization that changes the course of this book. Absolutely changes it. While it starts slow and the pace remains uneven, this is a story that will niggle at your brain for days and days. FREEDOM CLOTHES BY LEE LYNCH
So here I am, trying on men’s dress pants for the Golden Crown Literary Society Awards ceremony, and I keep thinking of the photos of our people in Orlando. They dressed up too in their best freedom clothes, also anticipating an evening of togetherness. I’m grateful to be alive and able to gather with other gay women, while I can barely take in how many of us were killed, wounded, traumatized and experienced losses because of our gender preferences. I’m reading about NYC Gay Pride. When I attended the early NYC marches, there was security, but nothing like what’s planned in 2016. Blocks and blocks are closed to parking. There will be thousands of officers on the streets, on rooftops, in the air and in boats. My biggest fear in the early 1970s was that my mother would see me on T.V. and I’d have to deal with laying that trip on her. Yet ever since the 1980s, when the right wing decided it would be politically expedient to build their power base by turning us into a featureless symbol against which multitudes of non-gays could unite, I have expected mass killings. We’re natural targets for people taught by their religions that their deities find us an abomination.

The horror of that Central Florida night brought back the general horror of gay bars for me. Like whole neighborhoods that house other minorities, the bars pen us in one place where we are queer ducks— queer sitting ducks. Orlando was a pogrom, “the organized killing of many helpless people,”* in this case organized by a stealth enemy that turns people like the deeply conflicted, unstable shooter into murderers. I think affectionately of some gay bars—I got to wear freedom clothes there too—but I also remember the horror of them. They were a nightmare then, they’re a nightmare again. Yet I thought of them as fun. Didn’t we all? I loved being with other gays, but drank to tolerate the demeaning conditions of our loud, cold, dirty, dangerous pens.
Truth be told, I’m a wallflower by nature with seldom enough self-confidence to ask a woman to dance. Even with the drink in me and a cigarette going, the bars bored me silly. Any excitement came from dancing with my partner and being surrounded by our kind. The gawking het couples on dates who came to laugh and stare at what to them was a grotesque sideshow, the ones who always managed to get tables because they knew the owners of the joints while we stood around without a place to set our drinks, degraded, intimidated and antagonized us, their very presence a warning that we danced to their fiddle. My rage at them continues to this day and fuels some of what I write. It’s due to the gentle nature of our people we are the victims of violence and our tormentors get off scot-free. I expected such an attack on LGBTQ people at least since the night, in the mid-1970s, when my friend and co-worker Carm was shot outside Partners Cafe in New Haven, Connecticut. Carm was walking to his car when out of nowhere; someone started shooting from a moving vehicle. Young, handsome Carm got a bullet in the arm. Now I’m only surprised at the infrequency of the attacks. I am surprised that a gay bar has been designated a National Monument. This is only one of many such dichotomies. We’re central to the frightening divide between U.S. voters, which only confirms how powerful we really are. It’s fitting that our monument should be a bar. Human communities form where they can, spontaneously, and eventually develop traditions. Hellish as they can be, at times they were glorious, glorious! The music may have been loud past bearing, but we danced all night! Under the glitter balls we saw ourselves reflected in our peers like nowhere else. I was not the only shy one and eventually a few strangers would become friends; friends grew to circles. With a gay bar nearby we never needed to be totally alone. A night at the bar was always a celebration. Angry, estranged, alcoholic, festive—companionship was there for the taking. Danger united us, as it does still. There will be increased security at venues and events like the one I’m headed to. I’ll be wearing my dress-up pants, shirt, vest, Pocket Square and tie. Others will be in alluring frocks, and a number in their full-dress U.S. military uniforms. Day by day, more and more people condemn atrocities against LGBTQ people and other minorities and we are stronger for every changed mind. I will remember the beautiful, proud and daring men and women who were attacked that nightmare night in Orlando, every time I don my glorious freedom clothes.

For the past four years the Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival has become a gathering of the best of the best of women in the world of jazz. The Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival is a niche festival that was founded by Lucy and Gail who own L&G Events, who are known as the “Promoters of Quality Entertainment Events of Interest to Women.” And, yes, they are lesbians, but the music festival transcends those boundaries. Over 20 of today’s jazz greats and rising-stars will gather for the Labor Day Weekend, September 2 – 4, to perform at the Annenberg Theater, Indian Canyons Golf Resort and Hard Rock Hotel. In the words of Artistic Director, Sweet Baby J’ai, “We have crafted a collection of extraordinary musicians merging jazz, blues and funk who will descend on Palm Springs over the Labor Day Weekend for a compelling musical tapestry.” Each year, Sweet Baby J’ai brings together a lineup of musicians that blend into a Jazz All-Star band of musicians and artists who

back up the headliners and perform throughout the weekend. Recently honored by the City of Los Angeles with a Living Jazz Legend Award, Sweet Baby J’ai brings a wealth of experience and focus to her role as the Festival’s Artistic Director. Sherry Luchette: Bass. She has performed with Downbeat Award- winning Jazz Ensemble 1 Youngstown State for five years, the Youngstown Symphony for three years, Ernie Andrews, David Sanborn, Louie Bellson, David Baker, and Terry Gibbs. She has also played/ studied with John Clayton, Tamir Hendelman and Joe Harnell.
Sweet Baby J’ai: Vocals and musician. Few entertainers can command a stage like the indefatigable Sweet Baby J’ai. A creative force on the music scene for nearly three decades, she tours the world with her genre defying work, which both embraces and expands jazz tradition. Her latest album is Straight to the Place.
Paula Atherton: Sax, vocals, recording artist and songwriter. Atherton is noted for a one-week gig at New York’s Blue Note with Hank Jones. Her most recent album is Ear Candy.
Sabine Pothier: Pianist-Composer. Widely respected as an award- winning classical pianist in the United States and Europe, and also respected greatly as a major jazz pianist from her work with Scotty Barnhart Quintet (Barnhart is also Director of Count Basie Orchestra) at the San Jose Jazz Festival, Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines and other venues.
Mimi Jones: Double bass, vocals, educator, composer and Jazz Ambassador. This multitalented performer mixes fusion of traditional and contemporary jazz, eclectic soul, funk, and rock. Her recent release CD is Feet In The Mud. Tina Raymond: Drummer. She has played in jazz festivals around the world, including Sweden’s Women in Jazz Festival and The Mary Lou Williams Festival, and is known for pushing musical boundaries

Trotter is known for her performances in musicals such as Dream Girls and The Color Purple. She is also a songwriter/producer for the late Teena Marie. Sunnie Paxson: Keyboards. A musical prodigy in her hometown of Philadelphia, she was selected as Los Angeles’ Best Jazz Performers in Los Angeles Magazine and listed in Jazz Week as one of the Top 100 Artists for radio spins. Albums include Groove Suite and Bohemian Sun. Karen Hammack: Piano, singer/songwriter, jazz composer. As Musical Director, Hammack has toured with Melissa Manchester and recorded with a slew of jazz and rock heavy hitters. She’s also an educator who has worked with trumpeter Bobby Rodriguez’s Jazz Adventure to introduce jazz to a new generation across Southern California. Linda Taylor: Guitar. She has toured, recorded, and/or performed with Tracy Chapman, Maia Sharp, Terri Lyne Carrington, Christopher Cross, and Sheila E. Her two solo albums are Pulse and Sum Blues. Sascha Dupont: Songwriter, piano/vocalist. Dupont has racked up more than 80 television appearances and four albums in her native Denmark. Her most recent release is Sascha D. Cathy Segal-Garcia: Vocalist. For more than 40 years, SegalGarcia has used her influence to build up and connect every aspect of the jazz scene in L.A. At the Divas Jazz Brunch, she’ll dip back to the 1950s for the jazz standards and torch songs performed by Julie London. Lesa Terry: Violin. Terry has recorded with a wide range of artists including Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour, Yolanda Adams, Aretha Franklin and Clark Terry. Her solo album is called A City Called Heaven. Jane Getz: Piano. Getz has worked with a Who’s Who of

jazz during her eight years in New York, most notably with Charles Mingus, Stan Getz (unrelated), Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Charles Lloyd, and Pharoah Sanders (with whom she recorded for ESP). Rosalia de Cuba: Vocalist. Afro-Cuban jazz and world music. She’ll bring her power vocals, reminiscent of Shirley Bassey and Celia Cruz to the music of Elena Burke for the brunch. Chelsea Stevens: Bass. She recently graduated with a degree in Jazz Bass Performance from California State University, Long Beach, where she was part of both of the university’s Downbeat award-winning ensembles: vocal jazz group Pacific Standard Time, and the instrumental department’s Concert Jazz Orchestra. You may recognize her from her work as a bassist on TV shows like Glee. Gennine Jackson: Vocalist. Jackson plays clubs here in the Coachella Valley. She joins Saxtress Pamela Williams for the Cool Soul Jam at the Indian Canyon Golf Resort for the Saturday afternoon concert. Maria Martinez: Drums. A drumming diva, she was featured drummer on Sweet Baby J’ai’s album Introducing J’ai Michel. Carol Chaikin: She attended the Berklee School Of Music and, starting in 1977, became artist-in-residence at the Aspen Music Festival for six years. She was a member of Maiden Voyage (198084) and has two solo albums. These artists and more are part of the multi-day music festival featuring an all female line up taking place September 2-4, 2016. THE DEED TO YOUR HOME
WILL YOUR DREAM COME TRUE? BY CHRISTOPHER HERITAGE You buy that house you always wanted in Palm Springs or San Diego or West Hollywood, and everything is cool. You sign a ton of papers, escrow closes. You move in with all the gorgeous new furniture. Paradise! Then you realize they didn’t title the property in your Trust. Or you realize you need a Trust now that you own some property. Or you get married on a joyful spur of the moment. Or wonder why the deed says you are single when you’re not. Sometimes things are not quite right about the way a new deed is worded. You know you need to check out these worries, but you don’t do it. Most of them are very easy fixes. But you don’t do it. Time passes. Then, life happens. Here are some real situations involving deeds that can hit you or anyone, anytime. I offer some facts that will help you sort out or avoid these issues, but you must promise to take care of them right away – no kicking them down the road and crossing your fingers that you won’t stumble over them in the future: I was in the middle of refinancing my mortgage when I got really sick and ended up in the hospital for a few weeks. I was totally out of it for a while, and couldn’t take care of my everyday affairs. My partner tried to help, but the bank, my health insurance plan, my mortgage lender and everybody else refused to talk to him. He wasn’t my legal “agent”. I was totally in limbo, and the lender needed a new deed signed right away, or I would lose my new super-low interest rate. FIX IT: Once you are incapacitated, it is too late to do anything that will help in this situation. Your partner could go to court to become conservator of your personal and financial affairs, but it can’t be done during a short-term incapacity, because conservatorship is a very long and complex process.

AVOID IT: It is very easy to prevent this situation from happening. All you need is a Durable Power of Attorney and an Advance Health Care and Personal Care Directive. These appoint an agent to act for you during any incapacity. That great low interest rate would never be in jeopardy. I bought my house 7 years ago, and got married last summer. I think I should add my wife’s name to my deed, but all my friends told me not to do it. They said it would be considered a gift to her, and I would have to pay gift and transfer taxes on it. But I heard California is a community property state. Did my wife automatically become a joint owner with me? Or is it a gift? FIX IT: Friends are great, but they don’t always know what they think they know. In California, you may transfer any part or all of your real property to your spouse without any gift or transfer taxes. It requires a new deed, and can become community property, or you can hold your share as separate property by titling the deed correctly and through a pre- or post-marital agreement. Federal gift tax rules may apply to the transfer, but that doesn’t mean you pay cash out of your pocket. Any CPA can tell you if the rules affect you in any way. When I bought my house a few years ago, my sister told me to put her on my deed as joint tenant, so she will be a half owner and can manage my property if something happens to me. That way, I don’t need a Trust, a Will or a Power of Attorney. But she and her husband have just split up, and in the divorce settlement, he claims he is entitled to a share of her half of my house. FIX IT: Sisters are wonderful, but they don’t always know what they think they know. It may be too late to save this one. You and your sister could go to court and try to convince a judge that your intent was clear to everyone and your sister never considered herself
an actual “owner”. This may or may not fly. There really should have been a written agreement to verify the intent. AVOID IT: Joint tenancy is not a good way to make sure your property is taken care of if you get sick or die. Most real property should be titled in a Trust, so a successor Trustee can step in if something happens to you. That person can be your sister, if you like, but she won’t own any part of the property, and her ex will depart empty-handed. My father Wendall and his husband Scott bought their dream retirement home a few years ago. They didn’t put it in their Trust because the bank told them it would be easier to get a low mortgage rate if just my dad’s name was on the deed. They could put it in their Trust later. But later never came. Dad passed away, and Scott died 2 years after. Now I have a mess on my hands. I’m the Trustee of their Trust, but the house isn’t in the Trust. In fact, it never passed legally into Scott’s hands. Who owns it now? It’s costing a lot of money to keep it up. I need to sell it fast! FIX IT: The house is still titled in your father’s name, and it is
likely a probate petition is the only way to resolve the issue. Scott could have filed a Spousal Property Petition if he were still alive. The court would have ordered the property passed on to him so he could put it in the Trust. But now it is too late. You can file a probate petition so the court can order the property distributed to the beneficiaries named in the Trust. This process can easily take 6 months or more, so there is no chance of a quick sale. AVOID IT: Never title a deed temporarily without following up to correct it immediately. A major purpose of a Trust is to hold your property so it can be managed and distributed without need for any court action. If you have a Trust, and the property isn’t titled in the Trust, you are totally defeating its purpose. BODYBUILDING TERMINOLOGY PART 1 BY ADAM SINICKI Getting into great shape and building tons of muscle is like getting free entry into a secret club. The respect you gain from other bodybuilders, the camaraderie in the gym, and the websites and products that only you can really appreciate... it’s all undoubtedly part of the fun. But then this has a downside to it as well – that being that it makes bodybuilding almost impenetrable for anyone on the outside. It’s cliquey, it’s intimidating and it’s very intense – so how are new people supposed to get started? Particularly when they can hardly even understand half the articles written on the subject? To make matters a bit easier, I’m going to take you by the hand and lead you through some of the odd terminology and jargon used on bodybuilding sites and in bodybuilding books so that you can at least understand a little bit of what’s going on and what you’re supposed to do. This will be your resource for all the unusual terms and phrases you come across in the land of bodybuilding and muscle building. Amino Acids: Amino acids are the carbon compounds that make up protein. In other words they are the reason you eat protein in the first place, and they are crucial for building muscle as well as various other functions around the body. Amino Acid Profile: The amino acid profile of a food group refers to the precise combination of amino acids it has and how useful these are to the body. Anabolic: An anabolic state is a state in which the body is building muscle and burning fat while also repairing other tissues. We go into an anabolic state after training. Anabolic hormones are hormones that trigger that state in the body. Anaerobic: Anaerobic exercise is exercise where you’ve reached the point at which you can no longer deliver the oxygen you need to where it’s needed fast enough. ATP: Adenosine Triphosphate – this is what our body needs glucose for and is the most fundamental type of energy necessary for all life on earth. BCAAs: BCAAs are ‘Branch Chained Amino Acids’ and these in turn are little combined amino acids that are in the correct format for your body to get the most use out of. Bilateral: Bilateral exercises refer to any exercises where you use both arms at once – so curling in each arm at the same time rather than doing one dumbbell at a time.
Bioavailability: Bioavailability refers to how useful a protein or another food item is for your body. If it is highly bioavailable then that means your body can easily extract the nutrients and amino acids it needs. If it’s not then that means a lot of it is going to just pass through your system and be of no use. Burn: Burn is the feeling you get during a workout like your muscles are on fire. It’s a good sign that your workout is going well. Catabolic: A catabolic state is the opposite of an anabolic state where your body is burning tissue and energy to allow you to continue your performance. This is useful for losing weight. Cheats: Bodybuilding is the only sport where cheating is good. Basically this means swinging your body in order to pump out a few more reps, and this is useful if you want to carry on training when the going gets tough. Calisthenics: Really this is just a posh term for bodyweight exercises. Casein: An alternative form of protein shake, casein is ‘slow release’ compared to whey protein making it useful for taking just before sleep. Compound: Compound exercises are those that use lots of muscle groups at once in unison, thereby mimicking the way that we use our muscles in real life and resulting in the production of more growth hormone. Converging: Converging movements are ones that have you use one side then the other and alternate. CV: CV is cardiovascular exercise – in other words aerobic exercise that gets your heart pumping and burns fat. Cycling: Not only riding a bike – this also means going on and off a certain supplement in order to manage the levels of it available in your body. Decline: Decline exercises are the opposite of incline exercises – in other words you are leaning backwards normally using your legs wrapped around some pads to hold you in position and preventing you sliding onto the floor head first. Drop Sets: Drop sets are sets of exercise where you are going to gradually lower the amount of weight you are lifting. This is useful because it enables you to lift for more repetitions than you otherwise could. To be continued in our September edition.

GOT A HEALTH TRACKER? HERE ARE SOME INTERESTING THINGS TO DO WITH IT! BY ADAM SINICKI
If you have leapt onto the health/fitness tracking bandwagon with your own Fitbit, Microsoft Band, Galaxy Gear Fit, Jawbone, Garmin or even Apple Watch, then you’re likely currently getting kick out of being able to measure your activity throughout the day. Just learning how many steps you take in a typical day – and how many calories that’s likely to burn (or not burn) – can be eye opening. But depending on the type of fitness tracker you have, there are many more things you can do than that. Using a fitness tracker, it’s actually possible to monitor a lot more than just your steps and this can in turn allow you to start running your own experiments, setting targets and generally improving your health and activity levels in a smart and constructive way. To help you start getting more from your device then and before the novelty starts to wear off, here are some of the more powerful uses you can get from them… STEPS – SETTING GOALS When you first get your device, it probably came with a set goal for your number of steps in a day. Usually this is somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 recommended steps a day, with the latter being the official line taken by most health institutions. Going after this daily goal can be somewhat obtuse a goal however and a hard one to meet. Instead, a better strategy is to focus on your weekly or monthly averages. IDENTIFYING THE BEST CALORIE BURNS Another useful thing you can do once you have your step counter is to look at when you are taking the most steps. It may actually surprise you to learn just how many steps you take and calories you burn when you head out to get milk for instance. And a day’s shopping is actually excellent from a calorie burning perspective!
EASY MORNINGS Theoretically, devices like the Jawbone UP have the ability to

wake us gently in such a way that we aren’t groggy and we avoid ‘sleep inertia’. This works by monitoring our activity levels during the night and waking us at a point before the alarm when we start to stir. When this works, it means you’ll be waking out of a light sleep rather than a deep sleep and the result is that you feel much brighter and more energetic right away. THE EFFECT OF ALCOHOL If you have a device such as the Fitbit Charge or the Microsoft Band, then you’ll be able to monitor your heart rate 24/7. This can be a very useful tool – even where the devices might lack a bit in terms of accuracy – as it lets you see how different events affect you. One thing you might find interesting is to keep an eye on your heart rate when you consume alcohol. This can be enough to put your heart rate up 10-20bpm as your body tries to get rid of it. You can also see how this impacts on your sleep. Even devices like the older Fitbits and Jawbone devices can track how deeply you’re sleeping and you might have a bit of a surprise when you see
how much less ‘deep sleep’ you get after just a few glasses of beer. You might end up re-thinking that second pint! SLEEP EXPERIMENTS You can also use your sleep monitors to help you improve the quality and quantity of your sleep. How? By running small experiments on yourself with n = 1. This means for instance, trying a spoon of honey before bed (a rumored remedy that is said to help sleep) and then seeing if that has a positive effect on your sleep quality. Or why not try having a hot shower before bed and see if that works instead? STRESS MONITORING For constant-heart rate monitors only, you can also track your stress levels throughout the day. Usually these devices show some kind of average BPM over a certain duration of time but if you have a very nerve-wracking event that occurs over a few hours – such as an interview or first date – you can actually see your heart rate spike. Likewise, while relaxing in the garden reading, you can often see it dip. This can be rather interesting and fun to look back on subsequently as you try to match up what happened during the day with the peaks and troughs in your BPM. DIET While there is some debate as to the value of getting the right ‘source’ of calories in your diet, it is pretty universally agreed that eating fewer calories than you burn off is a very straightforward and effective way to lose weight and get into shape. With a fitness tracker then, you can start monitoring roughly how many calories you burn on a regular basis and then use this information to set the target for your diet. ZONE TRAINING Again, this is one for those with heart rate monitoring built in. Zone training essentially means training at certain levels in order to encourage fat burning. One example is to find your ‘lactate threshold heart rate’ for instance, which is the point at which your breathing because rapid and uneven. Training with your heart rate consistently above this rate (zone 5+) is what results in fat burning. Going at over 106% (zone 5c) is considered anaerobic training and is perfect for high intensity interval training. In short, there are plenty of great things you can do with a fitness tracker and especially one of the more advanced options. At the very least they can be used to shed some light on your daily activities and the impact they have on your body, as well as helping to motivate you a little during walks and runs. If you put in some time and thought though, they can be much more than that and can become advanced training partners and lifestyle coaches.
