FASHION STATEMENT THIS SEASON’S TRENDS BY CORBIN REYNOLDS Most guys care about looking great, and feeling confident, and sometimes it can get hard to make sense of the trends on fashion shows and the catwalk. Let’s make it simple, and provide some of the latest men’s fashion trends. The preference on clothes and dressing up has been changing season after season. The first step, however, is understanding the basics, the fundamentals in which to build from. You need to rely on a few stock items that can be used for any situation. Perhaps you are being nagged by your partner for not being stylish enough, or maybe you are getting on to a new job and you want to create the right impression. Whatever the reason that prompted you to look at men’s fashion trends seriously, it is a good thing because the right fashion choices definitely add to the overall persona and greatly enhance your confidence too. Following are some of the latest trends to help you put together a look that works for you. TARTAN The classics Scottish weave rages on new runways. Dated back to medieval and made of thousands of structures, one for each clan of ancient Scotland as each family had its own tartan that was different, though for very few details, on that of another family, it is proposed again today not only with classic wool and not only by characteristic kilt. WESTERN STYLE Get ready to transform into cowboys, outlaws, and gunfighters, for a look in perfect Spaghetti Western. Among the Men’s Fashion Trends which moreover comes along with the release of the eighth movie by Quentin Tarantino, The Hateful Eight. Coincidence?! SEVENTIES REVIVAL Street Style from Spring/Summer 2017 Fashion Week also saw a sartorial throwback to the evocative seventies. The most appealing element from the seventies trend that emerged from street style was the rich color palette. Try harnessing a rusty brown or rich Bordeaux as the focal point of your outfits. Loose fitting button downs in gloomy tans or amber oranges are also great. Some attendees also saw the shows as an opportunity to bring out their suede and velvet clothing.

6 THESTANDARDPS.COM

The key to pulling off this trend is to find pieces that pay tribute to the seventies, but also complement your features and coloring. Oh, and refrain from donning bell-bottoms. WHITE OUT Head to toe white prevailed as a favored street style trend that was certainly bold. While most gentlemen that harnessed this trend went for more elaborate oriental-inspired silhouettes, there are simpler ways to channel elements of this trend for your weekend wear. Team white jeans with a humble white t-shirt, but throw on a navy or emerald baseball cap for a more grounded look. Roll up your jeans for a relaxed adaptation of the trend. Throw on some dark sunglasses to bring a bit more dimension to the plainness of all white. MONOCHROME PRINTS On the topic of childhood memories, the monochrome prints featured on the European streets of fashion week were a little reminder to our memories of ‘101 Dalmatians’. Bold, graphic and unusual, Fashion Week attendees weren’t afraid to make daring statements in the most humble and basic of all the color combinations. If you aren’t as brave, incorporate black and white in more traditional patterns, like bold stripes or ginghams which will read more classic yet perpetually stylish.

STATEMENT BOMBER JACKETS Attendees thought outside of the box with the color choices of their bomber jackets at Fashion Week. Yes, black and navy bombers featured prevalently in street style, but bolder, more vivid shades also played a major role in distinguishing attendees from other guests. Light-toned emeralds and bright pinks were unexpected and were attention-grabbing. For gentlemen wanting to keep things conservative, opt for versatile colors, but ensure that your fit is youthful, and your accompanying pieces are streamlined. THE POWDER BLUE SHIRT While some gents went for true light blues, others went for more lavender versions of powder blue button downs. Undoubtedly, there was a sea of classic silhouettes, but other powder blue shirt wearers also went for more modern adaptations. These came in the form of asymmetric shoulders, dimensional detailing and skinnier fits. For corporate wear, adapt powder blue shirts with ties in the same color family; think navy and cobalt. Reds and Burgundies are also great color accompaniments. For casual wear, a great fitting powder blue shirt with streamline chinos is ideal. Team with loafers or white sneakers for a relaxed aesthetic.

VERMILLION RED Certainly one of the most attention-grabbing color trends, vermillion red stood out as a sartorial favorite on the streets of Fashion Week. Be careful to cherry pick which red pieces you go for; this shade of red is very bright and can read conspicuously over the top if done wrong. Vivid red t-shirts can be a nice change to our beloved white t-shirts and red sweaters are a great accompaniment to dark denim. For corporate wear, channel the trend with red socks or a preppy striped tie featuring the shade for a subtle interpretation of the trend.

COVER THE ODD SIDE OF FASHION BY CORBIN REYNOLDS

For men, it’s always hard to keep up with the ever-changing world of style. Unlike most women who change clothes every now and then, men on the other hand tend to stick with the basics. But not everything printed in those magazines will make you look good. There are fashion trends for men that are just so out of the way that even models can’t pull it together. Here are some of the most ridiculous, weird, absurd, horrible fashion trends for men. We seriously doubt you will be seeing on the street anytime soon.

LIGHT WASH DENIM Light blue was certainly a preferred color of choice on the streets of Europe, with the powder blue trend sustained with the favored denim for the Spring/Summer 2017 Fashion Week attendees. Light and bright were the denim jackets that featured heavily on the European streets. The light wash denim trend didn’t stop there, with some guests interpreting their light wash denim in edgier pieces, including light denim short sleeve mechanic coveralls and distressed jeans. The ultimate for casual wear, invest in some slightly baggy denim jackets for easy over the shoulder accompaniments to white t-shirts or striped sweaters. There you have it, info to assist you in putting together a look that works for your individual style. All the while keeping your clothing budget in line while looking your best and building a wardrobe that won’t go out of style.

A PIECE OF ARISCE… EVERYONE WANTS IT!

THE TRANS MODEL CHANGING THE FACE OF FASHION BY MIKE BAHR

As outspoken as she is beautiful, Arisce Wanzer is a true modeling force. She’s worked for top brands like Opening Ceremony and Topshop and is currently one of the faces of Kenneth Cole. Arisce first made national headlines two years ago when she sent Kendall Jenner a letter about what it’s really like to fight your way into the modeling world when its not handed to you by your family’s fame. She’s also been open about her frustration with the tokenism of the fashion world, telling theHairpin.com how, “So often, they’re like, “We already have a tranny. We already have a black girl... But that just tells me they’re lazy and I don’t want to work with them. If they don’t see my potential, then that’s just sad.” We sat down with NYC-based high fashion model in Los Angeles. Growing up, did you imagine you would one day be a fashion model? I knew I wanted to model by 14 years old, so I kept at it and never lost focus. My mother taught me to be the best at something if I really wanted to do it. So I kind of gave myself no other option and I’ve always been one to get what I work for. What was the biggest hurdle on your fashion journey? Former agents telling me that it wasn’t my time, when they had more than enough pull to send me on better jobs. Other people’s laziness or blindness to see my talent and worth have held me back for years. How did you find Slay Models? Slay found me. I met Cecilio Asuncion (founder of Slay Models) over brunch two and a half years ago and I’ve been with him ever since. He’s the best thing that could have happened to me.

10 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Is there an advantage to working with an all-trans agency? Hell yes! I love going to a casting or to a job and knowing that there isn’t going to be any transphobia or awkwardness. I get to do my job and do my best without fear of judgment or whispers.

How are major fashion houses responding to the idea of trans models on their runways? A lot of fashion houses are still using us as an edgy gimmick to market their products as young or cool and I think that’s lame as hell. Treat us like models. We aren’t curing cancer; we’re selling clothes. So hire us based on our abilities and not our gender identities. What has been your biggest fashion achievement so far? My feature in Vogue Deustche last September was a pinnacle in my fashion career, for sure. Seeing the letters V-O-G-U-E perfectly placed above my picture was the cherry on top of an often-uncertain career. Most models go their whole existence without ever getting that, so I am incredibly humbled by their choosing me. What’s your dream campaign? I want to model everything so my dream campaign changes every day! At the moment, I’d love to be the face of a major fragrance. I’d also honestly love to do a Target campaign or Dawn dish soap. Oh, and Victoria’s Secret.

What’s the hardest part about being a model? The hardest part about modeling for a social butterfly like me is being alone most of the time. I’m at castings alone, at gigs alone, on planes alone, in hotel rooms alone… All the while, my friends back home are posting from brunch and other fun social gatherings. Where do you see yourself in five years? I’ll be a super model solidified in pop culture’s memory forever. I’ll also be a television personality as I talk way too much to only be in photos. (Laughing) So TV is your future? I see myself in television. I recently got a role in an Amazon Prime show called “Cheetah In August” and being on set was a dream. The cast and crew were always laughing and having a good time. I loved every second and I’ll definitely be doing more of it in my future. For more info on Arisce and Slay Models visit Slaymodels.com

HOW TO DRESS FOR MUSCLE BY ADAM SINICKI

A lot of people are keen to build muscle and bulk up because they think it will help them to look better, feel more confident and have more success with the opposite sex. All these things are true. But while almost every guy looks better with a bit of muscle (and a lot of women do as well), it’s also true that you have to work what you’ve got. Building muscle isn’t enough to look amazing on its own then – you also need to know how to flaunt it. And that means knowing what to wear in order to make your muscle look really good and to maximize the impact that your physique can have on people who see you passing by. So the question is: how do you dress for muscle? THE CHALLENGES Unfortunately, while muscle objectively looks good on most guys, it’s also somewhat complicated when it comes to what you wear. Sure, having a ripped six pack is always going to impress – but no one will know you have a ripped six pack if it’s always hidden underneath your shirt. And if you also have massive pecs, then this can actually cause your clothes to hang strangely – a t-shirt or shirt can hang ‘off’ of your chest and this can end up making you look as though you’ve got a large stomach. It’s actually quite ironic. There are other problems here too. One is that dressing for muscle means hunting around to try and find clothes that fit. SOME TIPS THAT WILL HELP With all that in mind then, let’s look at some tips that can help you to get around these problems and dress to show off those guns and wings…

12 THESTANDARDPS.COM

GO DOWN A SIZE A lot of very muscular guys are shy to wear tight-fitting clothes in case they look like they’re ‘showing off’ or in case they end up looking overly stuffed and ridiculous. While it might be daunting at first then, it’s often

a good idea to get a size smaller than you think you need when you’re buying clothes as a bulky guy. Try it out at a changing room near you – you’ve got nothing to lose and if you don’t like it, you can always go back to your old style.

FEATURE GET FITTED CLOTHES Better yet, look out for fitted clothes. Fitted clothes are different from tight clothes because they adhere to the contours of your body – as opposed to just squeezing you in every spot. If you can find properly fitted clothes, then you’ll look fantastic no matter what shape you are. You can buy fitted shirts in stores and online and this will be a good starting point. As mentioned previously though, you are statistically now a ‘weird shape’ so you may find that clothes aren’t always stocked in your size specifically. In this case, looking online will often help you out as that way you can select from a much wider range of options. Before you do that, make sure that you know your exact measurements. If you’re an actual bodybuilder, then no doubt these are stats that you’re very familiar with already. For regular gym rats too though, this is worth finding out. Get your chest size, your collar, your waist, your arm length and your leg length. Now look for websites that will let you enter as much of this information as possible and you should be able to order your clothes exactly to specification. And if that doesn’t work out? Then you need to find yourself a tailor. This is crucial if you’re going to a wedding and you need a fitted suit but in fact you’ll likely find that once you’ve tried a tailored outfit you won’t want to go back – there’s nothing stopping you from getting your t-shirts tailored, your shirts and everything else for that matter! CREATE BALANCE While some guys might think that ‘looking like Johnny Bravo’ sounds awesome… it isn’t. We all know how important it is not to skip leg day and if you have a massively bulky upper body with broad shoulders and a huge chest, you need to have legs to match or you’ll risk looking weird. Unfortunately though, even if you do bulk your legs up, they will still tend to look relatively small compared with your upper body. The solution then is to try and create balance by using trousers that are a little more

14 THESTANDARDPS.COM

loosely fitted or that have a slight flare. This creates more symmetry and overall it makes you look like you’re more proportioned. TUCK YOUR SHIRT IN Really important for any guy who works out to a large extent is to tuck in shirts. Again, this is partly to prevent them from hanging off your pecs. ADD VERTICALITY A risk when you’re very bulky is that it can make you look squat – and this is especially true if you’re not naturally very tall. To avoid this problem, you can try using your clothes to create more of an illusion of height. One way to do this is of course to make yourself a little higher – in other words to wear shoes that have a very slight heel. Another option is to add some vertical lines to your clothes. These draw the eye up and down and in turn that makes you look slimmer and not as wide. And if you’re massive, it will just make you look even more massive. Which is a good thing. USE BLACK AND WHITE CLEVERLY Remember: black is slimming. And the reverse is also true – white can make you look bigger. Thus, when you want to make yourself blend in among the measly humans,

you can try wearing a black top that will remove some of your bulges and make you appear to take up less space. Conversely, if you’re feeling good and you want to show off your hard-earned gains, try wearing a white top that will make your upper half look even broader. SHOWING SOME MUSCLE If you want the world to know that you’ve been working out, then a white top is one useful tool. Another is to get tops with short sleeves – and these sleeves ideally want to stop just after the end of your shoulder to really show off the maximum arm-size. Make sure those sleeves are somewhat tight too – you want to create the illusion that your arms are about to burst out of them! Another useful tool is a deep v-neck. This will show off a bit of that ‘pec cleavage’ you’ve been developing on the bench press. THE RULE OF ONE For business casual and other occasions that aren’t ‘BBQ on the beach’ though, you want to avoid the tank top and instead go for something a little more demur. Show off too much skin and you’ll look desperate for attention so instead, pick one part of your body you want to show off and make that your ‘feature’.

It’s the perfect book to browse when you’ve only got a few minutes to spare.

Toorpakai with Katharine Holstein. This is the story of a girl who wanted to play sports more than anything in the world – and she did. Pair it up with “Then Comes Marriage” by Roberta Kaplan with Lisa Dickey, a book about the United States v. Windsor and the end of DOMA. For the reader who’s spent the summer looking for a spiritual home, “Queer Virtue” by The Reverend Elizabeth M. Edman could be what you need. This is a book about how the church needs LGBTQ worshippers to strengthen their core and to return the church to a true Christian faith. Sometimes, all you need for the end of summer is a good romp in the paper, right? So look for “Fun with Dick and James” by Rich Barnett, and buckle your seatbelt. It’s a story of a rich Delaware man with an ex-wife and other assorted problems, who are plagued by a malicious dentist nemesis. How does he extricate himself from trouble? All it takes is a good boyfriend.

TOP 5 WAYS YOU COULD HAVE YOUR OWN “BREXIT BOOM” BY MICHAEL SANFORD By now, we’ve all heard about Brexit - the term used to describe Britain’s exit from the European Union - and a serious decision that will play a crucial role in the overall health of the global economy for months and possibly years to come. On the flip side, there are some immediate affects that could be great for your personal economic situation. As the dust settles, consumers are set to experience a unique economic landscape. Most consumers, in one way or another, should understand the impact Brexit is having on their finances and assets. It isn’t all doom and gloom - understanding how Brexit affects the average consumer can give you an advantage. HERE ARE FIVE AREAS YOU SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO FOLLOWING THE BREXIT. HOUSING U.S. mortgages rates are expected to remain low, if not decrease slightly due to Brexit. Uncertainty will drive lower rates with less variance, creating a buyer’s market. “Mortgage rates are likely to soon fall close to the all-time lows that prevailed in late 2012,” says Alan MacEachin, Navy Federal Credit Union corporate economist. “Homeowners should assess whether refinancing would make sense for them.” What’s more, prospective homebuyers should be aware of the lower costs for financing their purchase. Since the housing crisis, rates have been extremely low. What this means for you: Own a home? See if you can refinance your mortgage to a lower rate. This could save you money over time. Still renting but in the market for a new home? Partner with a trusted lender to check the rates. If you don’t have enough money for a down payment, look into 100 percent financing options. You could get into your new home with no money out of pocket. USE YOUR PLASTICS Make the most of Brexit-influenced pricing by using your credit card as your primary form of payment. When traveling, your card will offer a better exchange rate than banks or exchange kiosks.

22 THESTANDARDPS.COM

However, “Make sure you’re using a credit card that waives foreign transaction fees,” says Randy Hopper, vice president of credit cards at Navy Federal. “Otherwise, the advantages of the exchange rate could be lost entirely.” Hopper added that U.S. interest rates are likely to stay lower for longer as a result of Brexit, “meaning there’s a reduced likelihood that the interest rate on most credit cards will increase anytime soon.” WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU: Use your credit card when traveling overseas. To avoid foreign transaction fees, choose a card from a financial institution that doesn’t charge them, like Navy Federal. RIPE FOR AUTO LOANS Consumers have something to celebrate when it comes to auto loans. Considering the average age of a used car is now at 11.4 years, a new car that requires little maintenance, combined with the low rate environment, may prompt you to take a test drive on that car you’ve been eyeing. “The key factor here is that rates will remain lower for longer. I expect auto sales to remain high this year, considering rates consumers are getting,” MacEachin said.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU: Do your research. It may be time to upgrade your car, and there has never been a better time to do it. Run the numbers with a Car Affordability Calculator, so you can see what impact rates have on your monthly payments. Many financial institutions also offer auto loan pre-approvals, so you can shop with confidence. SAVING FOR RETIREMENT Consumers years away from retirement have plenty of time to recover from any losses Brexit may cause. For those closer to retirement, it may be a good time to check on your investments and overall retirement plan. Form a solid plan of action with your financial planner to safeguard your investments from any market volatility. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU: This is a good reminder for those saving for retirement to check up on your investments. Your financial planner will be able to provide advice that matches your retirement plan and help guide you through these times of economic uncertainty. GOT THE TRAVEL BUG? THIS ONE’S FOR YOU! Have you ever had the desire to visit the UK? Now might be the time. The exchange rate will decrease the cost of vacationing in the UK, as everything from meals to hotels to clothing will become more affordable. British airline fares may also decline relative to American carriers. “The value of the British pound has dropped sharply as a result of the Brexit vote, which means the cost of a vacation in Britain would be about ten percent cheaper than it would have been just a few weeks ago,” MacEachin says. If you are flying a British or European carrier, be sure to check in with your airline before flying. Following Brexit, there is some uncertainty on how UK carriers will adjust. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU: London may be calling, so check out your travel budget and compare the pound to the U.S. dollar. Search for hotels, airfare, and entertainment at lower costs. Due to the low credit card rates, it may also be a good time to check around for any travel rewards cards. BOTTOM LINE: The Brexit affect is only just beginning and the long-term view is that it could create some market volatility. But for the immediate future, you can take advantage of low rates on consumer loans, in addition to credit card exchange rate, and travel prices. The time is ripe for making moves, especially if you’re buying or refinancing a home, in the market for a new car, moving to using credit cards, especially overseas, or more specifically in the U.K. Cheers mate!

LIFE’S A DRAG THE HEAT IS ON BY PINKIE MERINGUE SHIMMER

Hello all of you Fabulous, Amazing, Wonderful people out there. I trust that you are all doing well. Now lord have mercy it is just too darn HOT out here in the desert of Palm Springs. Have any of you been here through the summer? I love it at my shows; the crowds have been great. These are the people I call the survivors, we are the ones who choose to be here full time, of course by mid to late July I wonder if I am going to survive until fall, but I see the audience and that makes it all worth the effort. Here are a few tips to help cope with the crazy heat. Secret #1, “Ladies” How do you plan your makeup differently given the temperature situation? Lots Of Powder! Powder, Powder, Powder. Lord! I have it delivered by the pallet. (smile) There are several setting sprays out there as well, but honey when it is 300 degrees outside nothing is going to help. You just open the door, shoulders back, breasts thrusts forward, sunglasses on and you just walk through that door like you own it. Just make sure that you have a towel in your hand to pat your brow. You know my biggest issue is I am hot all the time, then when you put on pads, 4 layers of tights, 3 layers of spackle or plaster, a tub of powder and a wig… honey you just have to WERK it! There is nothing you can do about the temperature so you just go out there no matter how much you are sweating and you be fierce and you claim that stage. Hmm…. maybe it might help if you had a super hot go-go dancer walk in front of you holding a fan, set on high,

super high, it will probably be a distraction but then again it might be worth it. OHHHH, GURL… a friend of mine, Ashley Pennington gave me some fabulous advice. I have not tried it out just quite yet, but it sounds like it might help a lot. She take a small ice pack, frozen, wrap it in a kitchen towel, then slip it in your bra behind your boobs. And although

you might get a bit of frostbite, it sounds like it would do the trick. So OK girls… when you try this or if you have other fabulous tips just email me at pinkiemeringue@yahoo.com LOVE AND LIGHT Pinkie Meringue Shimmer pinkiemeringue@yahoo.com

LEGALLY SPEAKING

PRIVATE EYES

ON THE TRAIL OF DASTARDLY DEEDS AND LONG-LOST HEIRS BY CHRISTOPHER HERITAGE

From Sherlock Holmes to Sam Spade, Nancy Drew to Hercule Poirot, and on to our current crop of TV sleuths, we thrill to the drama and excitement of intrepid detectives seeking answers to puzzles and justice forever.

impersonate a law enforcement officer or even give an impression of connection with the government; and in California, to commit any violation of the California Privacy Act, which outlaws secret wiretapping, eavesdropping and recording.

Murder and mayhem seem to follow these characters around. Everyone tunes in to see who’s gonna get it next. Or wipe out in a flaming car crash. Or sneak around like a weasel after a mouse until the superior brains of the detective in charge and his gorgeous sidekick trap him.

The services provided by private investigators are wideranging, and are often needed by attorneys and businesses, as well as individuals. They search for information about legal, financial, and personal matters. They investigate crime and cyber-fraud; verify the identity, occupation or character of people; locate lost or stolen property; investigate the cause of fires, accidents and injuries; and secure evidence for use in court.

Are there real life heroes like these? There could be a few, but I haven’t run in to any myself. What I do know a little about are the every-day people who make up the workforce of around 35,000 private investigators in the U.S. About 1 in 4 of these are self-employed. California is home to at least 2,000 private eyes. There is probably little drama in their lives, but they are responsible for setting right millions of situations that cause many of us to spend anxious and sleepless nights.

Some activities are relatively simple, and provide basic information to the PI’s employer: Verify employment and income of job-seekers, loan applicants and others; search public records to uncover important information; and conduct various other investigations of people’s backgrounds and character.

Private investigators need special analytical techniques and use logic and deductive reasoning in their work. They need patience, must be computer-savvy, and have a good understanding of federal, state, and local laws, such as privacy laws. Many have served in the armed forces or in law enforcement where they acquired and practiced these skills. Nearly all states require licensure of PI’s, whether they work solo or for another company or the government.

In my practice, I might need to employ a PI to locate a missing heir. I recently ran into just such a situation: a client died, and his estate was to pass to his nearest kin, 2 great-nephews who were named in his trust. But the trust was many years old, the relatives didn’t stay in touch, and there was no way to know where these heirs are now. To complicate things, their names were such common names that our attempts to locate them through standard internet sources yielded hundreds of possibilities – far too many for us to track down. This is where a private investigator is just the ticket. Turn over the investigation to an expert, and it can be resolved very quickly.

Private investigators do not have police authority, and have only the authorization to act that any private citizen has under the law. This means that some of their activities could cross the fine line between legal and illegal. Undercover work, in particular, is often risky. It is prohibited for a PI to be dishonest or fraudulent (such as claiming to be someone he isn’t in order to secure information); to

I handle some divorce cases in my practice, too. Sometimes my client has information that the other party may have assets that are not being disclosed, which could result in a less than fair division of property by the judge. Many private investigators specialize in locating and verifying assets in divorce situations, and can secure and present evidence in court to help reach a fair settlement for both parties.

Who are these people and what exactly do they do?

30 THESTANDARDPS.COM

There is an increasing need for experienced investigators in the area of computer crimes and information theft. They specialize in recovering, analyzing and presenting information from computers to be used as evidence. They may audit information systems for fraud, and recover deleted emails and documents. Some PI’s conduct surveillance, verify facts and locate witnesses to help prepare criminal defenses. Others work on fraud in businesses, such as fraudulent billing by a supplier or abuse of expense accounts. Some others work as guards and in armored car services. It is not necessary for most private investigators to carry weapons, since their purpose is to secure information, not to enforce laws or apprehend criminals. If a weapon is required for personal safety on the job, it must be applied for separately from a license to act as a private investigator. If being a private eye sounds intriguing, here is how you can become one:

- You must be at least 18 years old - Pass a California Department of Justice and FBI criminal history background check - You need at least 3 years with 2,000 hours each year of compensated experience in investigative work; or have a law degree; or other degrees with various hours of paid experience. Your employer must certify this experience - Pass a 2 hour multiple-choice exam covering laws, regulations, terminology, civil and criminal liability, and a wide range of other topics. Pay the required fingerprinting, application and licensing fees.

DR. SCOGGINS

BLACK IS THE COLOR OF LOVE BY DR. STEPHAN M. SCOGGINS

They said wait! And I waited. For a hundred years I waited. In cotton fields, kitchens, balconies, in bread lines, at back doors and on chain gangs. In stinking, colored toilets and crowded ghettos, Outside of schools and voting booths. In the back of buses I waited and some said, Later! Later? Later! Later! Later. And then some said, Never! Never? Never! Never! Never! What color is black? Is it a myth or a fact, that black is beautiful? Black is the color of love! Now, more than ever before, we find evidence that black is the color of love. People of all races, all around the world are displaying phenomenal acts of unity, many of which are triggered by the deliberate discriminatory and deadly actions against black people. From the unprecedented disrespect to the office of President of the United States to the disparate killings of blacks in police involved shootings, many people from around the world, who are filled with compassion and good sense, are saying, STOP! You don’t have to be against someone else to be for yourself. Some people are quick to demonstrate towards others, the very practices of hatred and discrimination that were imposed upon them. For instance, during the repeal of Proposition 8, it was the oppressed communities who were feverishly opposing same sex marriages. Those were the feeding grounds to gather interviews for the antiquated verbiage of, “God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.” Really? Did you forget that your head is still in the guillotine of discrimination? And, you respond by discriminating? Hmm, perhaps that’s learned behavior? If that’s the case, by definition, Culture is a learned behavior. Therefore, we can change the culture by changing what is taught and subsequently what is learned. Can it really be THAT simple? I absolutely believe it can be. Many journal sources are quick to site when the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in the case Loving v. Virginia that racebased restrictions on the set of individuals whom an individual is eligible to marry violate the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution. That was not even 50 years ago. Here’s a thought, let’s embrace and enjoy the many freedoms that many of us have fought for. In my lifetime, since the Civil Rights

Movement and continued today, it has been the love of ALL races marching together, praying together, crying together and dying together that has polarized the power of unity. In elementary school, mixing and creating colors was a messy and eye-opening experience. What a fun analogy to the blending of people. I clearly remember that while some colors could “stand alone”; in order to create the black color, it was necessary to mix MANY colors. The more colors you mixed the greater luster of black you achieved. What? Are we saying there are different shades of black? (smile) Say it ain’t so! (smile) OMG, some people are turning over in their graves. (smile) As it has manifested around the world, the beauty of culture has been the establishment of a true melting pot of people, of languages, of dance, of love and of color! We do have some experience in coming together. There was a time when we shared the commonalities of having the SAME vulnerabilities. When our country experienced the unimaginable devastation, now referred widely as just, “September 11th”, NO ONE, and I do mean, NO ONE, spoke of helping just the Whites, the Asians, Latinos, or Blacks. We immediately were able to identify that racially, we weren’t unique at all, but rather people of mixed colors whose blood, screams, tears and love desperately stretched out reaching for the nearest hand, regardless of the color, needing to feel….life! It’s NEVER been just the color. It has ALWAYS been the kind.

Please accept this personal invitation to visit www.BlackIsTheColorOfLove. com and learn about educational and scholarship opportunities for kids of all ages, kids of all races. As a nation, we MUST change our culture, our learned behavior, so that it can reflect an expression of love in ways that we have only dreamed. Future articles will provide helpful resources and guidelines; with a specific “How To” achieve the desires of your heart.

FITNESS

BODYBUILDING TERMINOLOGY PART 2 BY ADAM SINICKI

Last month we featured the first part of this series. This should help get the bodybuilding beginner a better understanding of that world as well as a refresher for the pros. Dynamic Tension: Dynamic tension was invented by Charles Atlas and involves simply moving your arm through a range of motions as though you were lifting a weight while tensing that muscle. Allegedly it can lead to muscle gains similar to those achieved by doing the exercise with weights. Failure: The point at which you can perform no more reps. Free Weights: Free weights are weights that aren’t resistance machines, in other words dumbbells and barbells that you can pick up and put down. These work more of the supporting muscle groups as thy force you to stabilize your body. Giant Sets: Giant sets are huge sets of exercises that aren’t just ‘sets and reps’ but rather an on-going monster of different exercises with no real rest in between. Hypertrophy: Hypertrophy is the technical term for muscle growth. Incline: Incline movements are any movements where you are sitting more upright rather than lying completely flat or back. Isolation: Isolation exercises are exercises where you isolate a single muscle group and target it on its own. You can achieve this by holding your upper arm still while doing curls for instance. This kind of exercise doesn’t build real world strength, but is brilliant for targeting specific muscles. Isometric: Isometric exercises are those where you are holding a position rather than moving anywhere – for instance just holding a handstand or plank. Loading: You load a supplement like creatine by having lots of it when you first start taking it so that the body has a ready supply and the levels are higher in your body. You will then settle into a normal routine of using it. Microtears: Microtears are the tiny tears in muscle fibers that we cause when we work out. It’s repairing these that cause hypertrophy. Negatives: Negatives are the part of the exercise where you lower the weight. If you can’t lift a weight you can get a good work out just from lifting it with both hands or with the help of a friend and then lowering it as slowly as you can. Plyometric: Plyometric exercises are exercises that involve

explosive movements like clapping press-ups. These work the ‘fast twitch muscle fibers’. Range of Movement: The range of movement is the whole arc of the motion that you go through when you perform a particular exercise. The greater the range of motion, the more of the muscle you will train. Resistance: Resistance is whatever you are pushing against – it may be a weight, it may be gravity + your own bodyweight, or it may be a resistance band. Resistance Machines: Resistance machines are the big machines that guide you through movements and target one muscle group specifically. They are useful for beginners and aren’t as effective as compound moves. Splits: Split routines are training programs where you break them down into muscle groups and days so that you might train your biceps on the Monday, your triceps on the Tuesday, and your lats on the Wednesday etc. Stack: Your supplements ‘stack’ is the list of different tablets, pills and shakes you are currently using. Static Contraction: Static contraction means just pushing or pulling against an immovable object – for instance squeezing a ball between your thighs consistently without actually moving, or pushing against a wall like you were trying to push it over. Super Sets: Super sets are sets where you do two different exercises, then rather than rest between sets you just alternative. Often you will train complimentary muscle groups this way by doing say tricep dips in a super set with bicep curls. Unilateral: Unilateral exercises are the opposite of bilateral exercises and involve using just one arm at a time then swapping. Vasodilation: Vasodilation is the dilation of the blood vessels and is good news. Supplements like NO2 (nitric oxide) are designed to help vasodilation. Whey: Whey is everyone’s favorite protein source, a bi-product of the cheese making process and the ingredient used in most protein shakes. We hope that his two-part series helped make matters a bit easier, and that it gave you a better understanding of what’s going on and what you’re supposed to do to get you on the road to a better, healthier you.

WELLNESS

WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE VISIONS AND NOT GOALS BY ADAM SINICKI

Self-help books and ‘gurus’ are constantly telling us that we need to set ourselves goals if we want to go far in the world. The idea is that without concrete goals and objectives, we can’t know precisely what it is we’re trying to get out of life. And when you don’t know what you’re trying to get out of life… well how are you supposed to get it? Seems fair enough… But life isn’t all about setting goals and not everything you want to accomplish is going to be easily broken down into succinct steps. Imagine for a moment if Martin Luther King had said: “I have an 8-point plan!” instead of “I have a dream…” Somehow it doesn’t have quite the same ring to it and somehow it isn’t quite as encouraging or enlightening… The point is, sometimes you need a ‘vision’ or a dream, rather than a goal. What Is a Vision? Once you start giving yourself visions instead of goals, you’ll find that they are far more powerful and actually more useful. A goal is normally something quantifiable. This will normally mean something like ‘losing 20 pounds in two months’, or perhaps ‘getting a raise’. These tend to be binary in terms of their grading, which is to say that you either pass or fail and there’s not really any wiggle room in between. Visions on the other hand are usually more abstract, more vague but also more poetic and more ambitious. This is something that’s much harder to put into words but it’s actually what ultimately motivates you more. As the word suggests, a ‘vision’ will generally tend to be something that you visualize (though not always). This is about a certain state of being, a feeling and a way of life more than it is about achieving something specific. So instead of losing X number of pounds in X number of time, you might instead just see yourself looking and feeling incredibly healthy. Having a confident smile, looking great in your clothes and feeling proud in your achievements. You might imagine the way that people will look at you now that you’re in awesome shape. Likewise, instead of aiming to get a raise, you might instead visualize yourself being highly successful, wearing a slick suit and having someone open a limousine door for you which you step out of

36 THESTANDARDPS.COM

to gasps of awe. Maybe you picture yourself standing at the top of your office block and looking out over the city. Other people will have visions that instead relate to their lifestyles and or the impact they want to have on the world. Or maybe your vision is about how your business is going to change the world? Maybe your current business model is just a springboard to greater things – perhaps you’re going to gradually build up an entire empire that you can use to achieve incredible things. Why Visions Are More Powerful? So now the next question is why you should choose a vision over a goal. What is it about this abstract, vague and ambitious vision that is innately superior to a rock solid goal? The first thing to recognize is that a vision is far more motivating and powerful than a goal. When you picture a vision in your mind, it will feel much more real than just a boring ‘goal’. By focusing on the emotional aspects – the very things that are motivating you to want to accomplish that goal in the first place – you’ll find that you feel much more compelled to jump out of bed in the morning and to get to work on whatever it is that you want to accomplish. This actually has a basis in neuroscience even – as it’s emotion that drives our anterior cingulate cortex and ‘salience network’ that are strongly linked to motivation and perseverance (1). In other words, if you focus on the ‘why’ and if you feel the emotions connected with what you want to achieve, then you’ll be much more likely to actually do it. At the same time, the more ambitious nature of visions over goals make them much more exciting and lead to more incredible things. In some ways, an unrealistic vision can even be easier than a

smaller goal. That’s because visions will motivate you more, they will motivate others more who will thus be inclined to get behind you and help out and they actually leave you faced with less competition. This at least is Tim Ferris’ theory. Finally, having your vision in mind makes it much easier for you to outline the steps and the goals you need to go through to get there. In other words, if you’re currently focused purely on the goals, then you might actually be heading in the right direction. Maybe it’s not really the money that excites you but that dream house? Maybe you don’t actually want to be rich – you just want to be able to travel? In these instances, you may discover that changing your strategy actually helps you to accomplish those goals much more quickly and easily. Keep your eye on the prize and you can ensure you’re setting the right course. Combining Goals and Visions While it would be easy to end the article there on the general note of: ‘visions FTW’, that would be doing a disservice. While it’s true that visions do certainly have many advantages over goals, they’re also flawed. The problem? They’re much too vague and distant to offer you any real structure. The pass-fail nature of goals is useful because it allows us to really see whether we’re progressing or not and whether we’re heading in the right direction. Unfortunately, many people go about goals in the wrong way and fail to align them with their vision. So here are the steps you should take to ensure perfect synergy between them both and positive steps in the right direction: - Visualize what it is you want from life, think about your role models and other people who have achieved whatever it is you want to achieve - Create a picture in your mind of that success and even consider drawing it - Think about what it really is about that image that excites you and motivates you Now think about what it would take to make those crucial parts happen – whether it’s the beautiful home, the loving family or the travel etc. Now, with your overarching vision firmly in mind, write down these steps as goals. Make sure that the goals themselves are very shortterm and easy to pass or fail on. They also must be entirely within your control – so don’t set the goal of losing 20lbs in two months, instead set the goal of working out 5 times a week, every week. Each week you can review whether you passed or failed and then you can consider whether this is still the fastest way to realize your vision. With this system in place you can now focus both on the exciting ‘dream’ you have, as well as the short, concrete steps you can take every day to get there. This will keep you motivated while giving you a clear idea of how to proceed each day.
