COMMENTARY 2018 RAINBOW WAVE BY THE NUMBERS: HISTORIC NUMBER OF GUBERNATORIAL, CONGRESSIONAL NOMINEES By Robin Gray
The Standard Magazine PO Box 2074, Palm Springs, CA 92263 760.831.4869 Nino Eilets Publisher Luciano McNulty Editor Maya Kalabic Art Director An unprecedented number of LGBTQ people have run for office throughout the 2018 election cycle – unleashing the potential for a Rainbow Wave of new openly LGBTQ elected officials at every level of government come November. The increase in candidates running is particularly noticeable for Congressional and gubernatorial positions, when analyzing candidates over the last five election cycles. The number of LGBTQ women-identified nominees for Congress also rose dramatically. These high-level candidates are among the more than 430 openly LGBTQ people who ran for office at every level of government this cycle. At least 244 openly LGBTQ candidates are still in the race and will appear on general election ballots in November. Of the 25 openly LGBTQ major party nominees for U.S. Congress and governor, all are Democrats. LGBTQ Major Party Nominees for US Congress Twenty-one openly LGBTQ candidates won Democratic primaries for U.S. Senate or U.S. House this year – more than at any other time in U.S. history. The number of LGBTQ women-identified nominees skyrocketed 160 percent since 2016, the year which held the previous record. There are 13 LGBTQ women-identified Congressional nominees this year – outnumbering the number of men-identified nominees – including both U.S. Senate nominees who are women. LGBTQ Gubernatorial Candidates A record seven known LGBTQ candidates ran for governor during the 2018 election cycle and four received a major party nomination – a historic high. Incredibly, the four nominees represent the full LGBT acronym, with one lesbian (Lupe Valdez of Texas), one gay man (Jared Polis of Colorado), one bisexual woman (Kate Brown of Oregon) and one transgender woman (Christine Hallquist of Vermont) to appear on the ballot in November.
Before this election cycle, no more than three openly LGBTQ people had ever run for governor in one election cycle and never had more than one openly LGBTQ person been nominated for the governor’s office by a major party. All gubernatorial nominees have been Democrats. Currently Serving Currently 576 known LGBTQ elected officials are serving nationwide – just 0.1 percent of all elected official positions. Americans must elect 22,810 more LGBTQ elected officials to achieve equitable representation in government. You can view all openly LGBTQ elected officials on LGBTQ Victory Institute’s Out for America interactive map or read its Out for America report from June 2018. Visit outforamerica.org for more on these two resources. Victory Fund LGBTQ Victory Fund works to change the face and voice of America’s politics and achieve equality for LGBTQ Americans by increasing the number of openly LGBTQ elected officials at all levels of government. PS PRIDE 2018 YOUTH POWER FOR CHANGE BY RON deHARTE
Greater Palm Springs Pride celebrating our diversity, advancing equality, and working for social justice for all. Inspired by and in support of youth-led movement-building efforts that are awakening critical conversations for social change, Greater Palm Springs Pride kicks off the 2018 Pride season under the theme of Youth Power for Change and Youth of Coachella Valley have collectively been named Grand Marshals of the 2018 Pride Parade. This year’s event is dedicated to our nation’s youth and all they’re doing to make our world a safer, more respectful place. It’s estimated that millennials make up almost a third of the American electorate, and come Nov. 6 of this year, millions of newly minted 18-year-olds will be eligible to make a difference at the ballot box.” It’s inspiring to see the number of teens and tweens who are standing up and saying “enough!” to intolerance, discrimination, and gun violence. After all, Pride is, and always has been, a show of resistance. Resistance to discrimination, resistance to hatred. Resistance to fear, to violence. What started as a rebellion has become a global movement nearly 50 years later. As we honor those who have courageously fought for equality and are no longer with us, we welcome the support and strength of the next generations. With the support of the City of Palm Springs, some of the highlights of this year’s event include a new Downtown Stage on

And if it’s been a while since you’ve had an HIV test, Get Tested Coachella Valley will be on hand to make sure you know your status. Pride is for everyone. So, whether you’re a member of the LGBT community, a supportive ally, or someone who’s questioning where you fit into the spectrum, you are part of our diverse and vibrant community, and your place is here with us. MATTHEW STOCKER AND TOM OLIVER
COMMUNITY GRAND MARSHALS Celebrating individuals with strong ties to the Coachella Valley who have made a positive, lasting impact in the region. MATTHEW STOCKER AND TOM OLIVER Matthew and Tom have volunteered together since they met in 2008, and since they arrived in Palm Springs three and a half years ago from San Francisco, they have become the indispensable duo for many organizations and events. With hearts of service and in humble fashion, Matthew and Tom have made a positive impact in the community. They actively volunteer, raise funds, and donate to Desert AIDS Project, The LGBT Center of the Desert, Sanctuary Palm Springs, The L-Fund, AIDS Assistance Program, Palm Springs Preservation Foundation, Greater Palm Springs Pride, National Center for Lesbian Rights, Human Rights Campaign, Emerald Kingdom, ONE-PS, Halloween Palm Springs on Arenas Road, and Modernism Week. While volunteering with the Visiting Nurses and Hospice of San Francisco, Matthew, a Bay Area native, founded the durable medical equipment and supplies reuse/recycling program in which volunteers pick up no-longer-needed equipment and supplies and deliver them to patients with no insurance or other resources. He also volunteered with Maitri Hospice, Coming Home Hospice, San Francisco AIDS Foundation, AIDS Emergency Fund/Breast Cancer Emergency Fund, The Hearing Dog Program, Pets Are Wonderful Support, and the San Francisco Bike Coalition. Tom, a San Francisco transplant from the Midwest, is driven by service to others and has dedicated his life to helping AIDSrelated organizations and people living with HIV. As part of the San Francisco Ducal Council he found a supportive extended family. In 2007, as elected Grand Duke XXXIV of San Francisco, he and Grand Duchess “Big D” raised over $40,000; to this day, he remains active in the nonprofit. He currently serves as chairman of the Warm Sands Neighborhood Organization and participates in the monthly cleanup of the Tahquitz Creek Wash. In 2016, Tom received the prestigious University of California, Riverside, Chancellor’s Award “People Helping People” for his service
to the community, and in 2017, Matthew and Tom were recognized by Desert AIDS Project as Everyday Heroes for making a difference in the community. When asked about their various volunteer activities, Matthew says, “When we volunteer our time, money, or skills, we help make the world a better place and make ourselves better people as well.” To which Tom adds, “We will serve as long as we can serve, so that those who receive services can be served.” YOUTH POWER FOR CHANGE Inspired by and in support of youth-led movement-building efforts that are awakening critical conversations for social change, Greater Palm Springs Pride kicks off the 2018 Pride season under the theme of Youth Power for Change. Youth of Coachella Valley are being honored collectively as Grand Marshals of the 2018 Pride Parade. Two youth, from east and west valley, Gina Villalobos and A’res Rey Flores have been selected to be Grand Marshal representatives and lead the youth contingent in the Pride parade. Empowered youth are at the forefront of building a national movement that can shape public policy for generations. While we believe youth who are empowered will change the world, we are reminded that youth have historically been on the frontlines of social change, ranging from the Civil Rights Movement to Black Lives Matter. Recently, in response to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, youth leadership emerged across the country and created national marches to demand change and end gun violence. They have crafted powerful position statements, organized school walkouts, lobbied politicians and engaged in conversations with elected-officials. Greater Palm Springs Pride is committed to empowering youth in the Coachella Valley through mentorship, community engagement and by directly funding grassroots programs in support of youth development, team building and anti-bullying efforts. Additionally, we create safe and affirming opportunities for youth to participate in activities related to Pride. We actively collaborate with Safe Schools Desert Cities to connect with youth and provide funding, through the Pride Youth Fund, directly to Gay-Straight Alliance clubs and LGBT youth programs.

ALEXANDER RODRIGUEZ, BRINGS BACK HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR AND STYLE BY MICHEL KHORDOC
Meet on air-personality, Alexander Rodriguez, one of the hosts of LATV’s brand new weekly talk show, Glitterbomb - the first national LGBTQ Latinx TV talk show to ever hit the small screen. Glitterbomb is an explosive, high-paced pop-culture English-language talk show that features heated discussions about the latest in pop culture news & trends, and welcomes some of the biggest names in entertainment. The groundbreaking talk show is setting a milestone in LGBTQ Latino programming being the first-ever talk show with an entirely gay, Latino, Hollywood-insider cast including “Entertainment Weekly” senior editor Patrick Gomez, actor Enrique Sapene and iHeartRadio personality Alexander Rodriguez. Bringing back the Hollywood glamour and style, martini in hand, Alexander Rodriguez is a host unlike any other, brazen, shocking, and always hilariously unfiltered. Alexander is a breath of fresh air in today’s often too politically correct world. His stand out personality, glamour and spunk are poised to make him instantly memorable on daytime television at home. As a gay Latino TV and Radio personality he has continuously been breaking barriers.
How would you describe yourself? Larger than life, martini sipping, can’t confine to a box, Hollywood obsessed, Bravo TV junkie, sarcastic, unfiltered, opinionated, LGBT, party monster, dapper, where classic Hollywood meets pop culture in a loud, vodka filled bang.
There’s probably not a single person who wouldn’t be inspired by his personal and professional journey - he epitomizes the definition of “doing it on your own terms” and succeeding at it. We sat down with Rodriguez to talk about Glitterbomb, On The Rocks and his meteoric entertainment career.
What message you hope to convey through your professional crafts? I want to bring a little of that old Hollywood style and humor, martini in hand, and bring it to today’s modern era where torn jeans are worn at the opera and fart jokes reign supreme.
OCTOBER 2018 13
FEATURE Tell us about your iHeart radio show “On the Rocks”, what do you hope to accomplish with it? I want to continue the environment that everyone is welcome to On the Rocks. You never know who you are going to find sitting next to each other - from Academy Award Winners, to reality TV stars, to drag queens, to porn stars. We sit, share a cocktail, and talk about life and entertainment from everyone’s unique perspective. We don’t ask the typical questions you are going to find on all the other talk shows.
What would you say makes Glitterbomb irresistibly hard not watch? Glitterbomb is the show you can watch with anyone. It’s high paced, filled with laughs, interviewing celebrities from every genre of entertainment by three hosts who couldn’t be more different. It’s the Latinx, LGBT show that literally everyone will enjoy. What makes YOU unique and charismatic as a TV host? I happen to be blessed with a quick wit and funny face - that often gets me in trouble. I was raised by a VERY opinionated single mom who taught me to speak up or someone else will for you. I’m also the normal person you see on the street; I’m not a hyper label of anything. I’m the guy you can joke with under any circumstances - even at funerals. How is the show different from other TV talk shows? The show is not trying to present us as super glossy, camera perfect LGBT hosts. We are so different, we talk openly about the reality of our individual lives (my hashtag is #foreversingle), we don’t share the same opinions, but we really love talking about entertainment and having a good time.
14 THESTANDARDPS.COM
What is the most memorable show you had to date? Such a tough question - I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many of my idols from classic Hollywood from Shirley Jones, Tippi Hedren, Lainie Kazan to George Chakiris as well as from my obsession with reality TV with Real Housewives and Shahs. I guess my favorite show was our alcohol tasting Christmas party with such a diverse cast of actors - Golden Globe Winner Joanna Cassidy (Blade Runner, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Six Feet Under), Walton Goggins (Justified, Tomb Raider, Vice Principals), Andy Buckley (The Office, LadyBird), Emmy nominee Mindy Sterling (Austin Powers, iCarly) and child actor Keith Coogan (Adventures in Babysitting, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead)...we got tipsy and chatted about everything under the sun. What is the one question I haven’t asked you? What makes me me. I grew up in conservative Orange County, raised by a single mom who worked three jobs so I could go to private school and keep up on voice and acting lessons, who was a little chubby, always causing problems at school for talking too much who was challenged every which way because we were not wealthy, we didn’t look like everyone else in OC and because we weren’t afraid to say what we thought. My mom provided me the happiest household I could imagine which helped shape my unique sense of humor and ability to find the joy in all situations. Today, I don’t fit in any box - I’m gay, but don’t have a size 28 waist, I’m Latino but don’t label myself purely by that culture, I’m a bear in the gay community but don’t go to leather parties, I’m a cinephile but love Bridesmaids as much as I do Schindler’s List...and I’ll never say no to Happy Hour. Alexander will be emceeing at Palm Springs Pride Nov 2-4. For more info about Glitterbomb go to: http://latv.com/glitterbomb

THE FIRST EVER LGBTQ+ FOCUSED FASHION WEEK HOLOGRAM CITY
BY MONA ELYAFI
Nik Kacy, Founder and President of gender-free luxury brand, NiK Kacy Footwear, brings the first ever LGBTQ+-focused Fashion Week, Equality Fashion Week to Los Angeles. Equality Fashion Week is celebrating the Queer Fashion Community in all its colorful spectrums in a 5-day (Oct 5-9) experience of LGBTQ+ artists and designers including pop-up meet-n-greets & fashion displays. Kicking off the festivities on Friday October 5 - a day before the commencement of LAFW - Equality Fashion Week will officially present its exclusive Fashion Show hosted by Carmen Carrera on the rooftop of the trendy Montrose Hotel.

DAPPER BOI
The iconic hotel is the home away from home for entertainments best and brightest. Committed to the LGBTQ+ community, it hosts and partners with top organizations including the Elton John Aids Foundation and the 2018 Lezathlon LA After-Party. Kacy is producing a non-traditional event that is breaking all the rules and defying conventional standards - particularly when it comes to models’ shapes and sizes. The event is dispelling the myth of “appropriate body types” as well as gender identity. Models will also include trans and nonbinary individuals as well as people of color. With the endeavor to create a morally accountable fashion week, Kacy is rallying fashion enthusiasts, designers and industry reps around the trans issue, partnering with TransLatina Coalition. The event will showcase the hottest LA-based couturiers and emerging designers who will sashay their new wave of trendy designs and hip collections including Sharpe Suiting, Hologram City, Nik Kacy Footwear, Fem/Haus, Lior Boroda, Dapper Boi and Stuzo Clothing. Kacy’s motive behind Equality Fashion Week is to create a fashion show that would not only show off designers’ latest creations but also provide a platform for the community to become aware of the designers. We caught up with Nik Kacy to get the scoop about the groundbreaking event. What is the motivation behind this first LA queer fashion event? Queer Fashion has been at the forefront of innovation and design throughout fashion history.
Mainstream has been taking our influences and creations as its own, often times leaving many queer designers out of business because they cannot afford to compete with the big corporations. Many of the queer designers paving the way are in Los Angeles; and we have yet to have “queer” fashion week like other cities such as London, Oakland and New York, to name a few. Why do you think LA needs an event like that when 1) there’s already LA Fashion, and 2) LA is not really considered a fashion Mecca per say? Very often, queer designers are unable to afford participation in mainstream fashion weeks like LAFW or NYFA unless big investors back them. How do we get investors and raise awareness of brands then if we are unable to compete with the big guns? Despite not being considered a fashion Mecca, LA is the Mecca for queer innovation and creativity. LA has a plethora of LGBTQ Folx with creative minds. Because this is the first of this event, I wanted to focus all the talent on local people in Southern California. The fashion industry is already known to be gay friendly, why do you think we need an official queer version? I disagree that the fashion industry is gay-friendly. As a community particularly for trans and GNC people, we have been under-represented. The fashion industry is still predominantly focused on separating genders and “Genderneutral” clothing is still limited to sweatpants, t-shirts or sweatshirts. Being inclusive and being gay-friendly are very different things. Our purpose is to give exposure to queer designers who are making strides and creating a diverse line of designs for all types of people. We want to provide opportunity for our community so that we too can have the same opportunities as the big brands.

As a designer yourself, what went into the process of selecting the designers? Mostly just kept my priorities to local designers who are queer with priority given to not only high quality of their work but also if they are trans, people of color or non-binary. What makes this fashion event timely and relevant? The discussion on gender and fashion has become an incredibly relevant topic in the news from laws barring trans folx from going into their bathroom matching their genders to celebrities creating fashion lines that are “Gender Neutral”. We are at the tipping point right now on all things gender related. This event is absolutely the king of event that we need to be having – especially now with our political climate. What do you hope attendees leave with? Awareness and support for Queer designers, talent, performers. I want them to see that we are just as valid, important and amazing as mainstream designers and that we’re all in this together. The message is that we should all support under-represented groups because when we help lift those in need we create more economic opportunities for everyone. All in all, what makes this fashion show a MUST ATTEND event? It will be a unique experience – very different from the official LA Fashion week. But we are not here to compete with them. We made sure our fashion show takes place before theirs start because we believe in solidarity and community building. For further info visit www.equalityfashionweek.com

AMAZON TRAIL
THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME BY LEE LYNCH
I was recently contemplating my shoes, which, along with clothes and boxes of books, are the only closeted things in our home. That morning I’d noticed my sweetheart had attached a magnet depicting Dorothy’s ruby shoes to our back door. Now, I’m as big a fan of The Wizard of Oz as the next gay person, but those shoes were never particularly significant to me. Which might be because, as a little kid, I read and reread the 1903 edition of The Wizard of Oz handed down to me from my considerably older brother and, perhaps, from my father before him. The inscription from Grandma and Grandpa Lynch is: “To read on train to North Dakota. March, 1939.” Of course, the shoes were not ruby-colored, as pointed out by the witty and erudite Kajmeister, in her blog “The Page Turns,” * which she posted not long after the magnet went up. Kajmeister wrote: “L. Frank Baum, author of all the Oz books, originally put the witch and Dorothy into silver, not ruby, shoes. The color was changed to ruby so that the new color process used in MGM could show the shoes off better against the yellow brick road.” I checked the book. The color plates are in orange, blue and yellow, no reds. The road, by the way, is definitely yellow and the artist, W.W. Denslow, outlined bricks on one of the color pages. Baum describes the shoes as silver and pointed and “tinkling merrily on the hard, yellow roadbed.” All that ruby slipper focus led to my footwear contemplations. Aside from tap shoes, the first pair I remember caring about were in a Medford, Massachusetts store front and made of faux alligator leather. Why I longed for them I have no idea, and I never got them. They were probably too expensive for my family. This was back in the unimaginable 1950s. Since then, I have spent my life in footwear more likely to be worn by the scarecrow. I

I used a lot of white liquid polish to cover scuffs and stains on my white sneaks, which were made of cotton. The stain also worked on white leather shoes, but the Mary Jane style didn’t suit me at all. My mother always said loafers were bad for my feet, and they were because I’ve had plantar fasciitis since the days we shopped at the Buster Brown shoe store on Main Street in Flushing, New York. But I loved my loafers, especially the ones that were dyed to the shade of a vanilla milkshake. These were the shoes of my coming out time. Nothing made me feel spiffier around town with my girlfriend Suzy than my vanilla loafers.
Except white sneakers, blue jeans and a plain white sweatshirt, sleeves pushed up. Except white bucks with crepe soles, blue jeans, a button-down shirt and a golf jacket, collar up. Then came the sixties. At college by then, I forswore shoes. Campus lesbian poet, it was practically expected. There’s a photo of the barefoot student that was me in that yearbook, striding across campus like Dorothy, very much “a little girl…who had been suddenly whisked away from her own country and set down in the midst of a strange land.” I found my “hippie sandals” at an upscale sidewalk sale in Boston. It was also the psychedelic era and sandals, among the liberal arts majors, were de rigueur. Thin-soled, leather thongs with straps, they were the next best thing to barefoot when you had to go into a store or pizza parlor. Were any of these the silver shoes that would take me home? Not yet. Not for a long while. My generation of women got tired of doing the behind-thescenes work for the revolution. We paradoxically experienced patriarchal oppression within the counterculture and got mad. No more Ms. Nice Girl, I bought shitkickers. In the 1970s, Army-Navy Surplus stores carried the jump boots of Paratroopers and the Airborne Forces. I felt pretty powerful lacing them up my calf and
knowing the rigid toecap could endanger male chauvinist pigs. Next came the ankle-high Timberlands that I bought to wear in chilly Connecticut. The tread didn’t cut it on the ice and they did me no good whatsoever in deep snow so I made the sixties journey a little late (in the eighties), went to California and bought my first Red Wing boots. Soon those Red Wings carried me west for good to the lesbian mountains, women’s land, and tall rubber mud boots. Not that I left my Birkkies behind. Arizonas, Bostons, I re-soled them until they weren’t fit to wear, then replaced them year after year. I guess they were my middle-age shoes, though I still wear the Arizona knock-offs recommended by my podiatrist. By the time one gets to Medicare age, and the plantar fasciitis rages, and everything in Trumplandia costs double what it used to, the real thing isn’t as important as it once was. Now that I can no longer run, the doc has put me in running shoes. Most of my waking hours are spent in Asics. Men’s for the wide toe box. Neon green to honor the late young writer Sandra Moran, who ran in lively-colored shoes. My sweetheart and I even have waterproof Gore-Tex Asics, for our Northwest rains and for walking our coastal beaches. It seems like I never needed silver or ruby shoes to get home. *kajmeister.com

BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
It was right here a minute ago. You saw it, but now it’s gone and you have to find it. Beneath a newspaper, atop a shelf, under a blanket, wherever it is, it was just right here – and as in the new book “Whiskey When We’re Dry” by John Larison, you’d search years to have it back. Jessilyn Harney never knew her mother. She died in childbirth, leaving Jessilyn’s father to raise Jessilyn and her brother, Noah, who was five years older. Noah took care of Jessilyn when their father drank too much syrup. He was a good brother, making sure she was warm, dressed, and protected – until the year she turned thirteen and, as young men are wont to do, Noah had a fight with his father and he rode away. For a few years, Jessilyn did what she could to help her father run things, but he’d gotten addled in that fight, and was never the same. Sensing the truth, perhaps, he schooled her on sharp shooting for protection, and he talked of marrying her off. Six days after he left on a solitary ride, Jessilyn found his bones scattered. Not knowing what to do, she asked if the nearby Mormon family might take her in, and she was denied. That was when Jessilyn went into the old wooden box that Noah left behind. She found some of his outgrown clothes – things that fit her fine – and she became Jesse. Women on the frontier stuck out, he learned, but a baby-faced man was mostly ignored. Still, he was soft and that cost him; he was unwise to the world, and that cost more, though guns would ultimately protect Jesse and they’d generate money in wagers with fools who thought a lad wasn’t good with a Colt. But Jesse didn’t want money; he only wanted one thing. Noah had taken up with some outlaws, and there was a bounty on his head, dead or alive. Sharp-shooting was fun, but Jesse only wanted to find Noah before the law did… Reading “Whiskey When We’re Dry” is like opening dozens of little gifts at Christmas: each time a surprise occurs, it’s a delight – the last, no less than the first. Author John Larison does that over and over again, gifting readers with a great opening, exceptional characters, and plenty to unwrap. Set in the years following the Civil War, in an unnamed state, this book offers a lot to fans of many genres: for sure, this is an oater, complete with hoses and outlaws. With stunningly described scenery, it’s a book for adventurers. There’s a gauzily told romance
with another woman here, and small crushes on gun-slinging men. It’s un-PC, so beware! There’s heroism in this novel, but not where you might anticipate it. Take this book on that last-minute vacation you’ve got. Take it to bed, and don’t expect to sleep. Take “Whiskey When We’re Dry,” take, it, take it wherever you go. If you’re in need of a sweeping epic that offers plenty of mini-shocks throughout, it’s right here. “Whiskey When We’re Dry” by John Larison c.2018, Viking / $28.00 / $35.00 Canada / 400 pages

INDESIGN PRIDE…IT’S IN THE DETAILS BY DANN FOLEY
I am proud to be a part of the Standard’s Pride issue. It’s one of the common phrases you probably often hear, take pride in your work, take pride in how you look…and my favorite, take pride in your home and how you live. It may be a terrible cliché to say that LGBTQ people are supposed to be more fabulous and have more beautiful homes and more fabulous lives. Hey, we have been called much worse so, why not embrace this one? Maybe we should celebrate the fact that we can take pride in our homes and the way we live. As a community we have shown, by example others the way to live well, live with style and how to live with pride. I love Pride time here in the desert. It coincides with the change of season here. We finally get some relief from the heat and we get to enjoy all the Pride festivities, big and small. As always, I am interested in helping you to find your own style and to show you how
24 THESTANDARDPS.COM
to personalize your world to express your personality and create a home of both comfort and beauty. Let’s talk about your home and how to personalize it, get it ready for the change of seasons and be a source of pride for your very own Pride party. Though we love to share our LGBT experience through Pride celebrations throughout the country and around the globe the truth is, this party is all about us, people! A home filled with Pride or a party to celebrate that pride does not have to be covered in rainbows…unless that is your thing. I approach every project with the same excitement and creativity. Some clients are simply more open the experience of design and how it can change their perspective as well as their lives. Let’s talk about how to get the most from your home and your budget. One of things I say to every single client at the beginning is, “I
will spend every dime on the table but I will spend it wisely.” In the end it’s not about how much money you have to spend, it’s how you spend it that counts. Be it a remodel, redecoration or an “fluff and update” to prepare for a party at home, there is a way to go about it to not make you crazy or break-the-bank. Here are some of my tried and true elements of design that can help you show your pride. • Start with a plan…and a budget. The only way to get the job done is begin with the big picture in place. You can make as many adjustments along the way as you want but without a plan, you will be doomed to ruin. • Focus. Design is a creative process but it is of the utmost importance to keep that vision of the finished room in mind at all times. It is very easy to get off track and start second-guessing yourself. Stay focused! • Remember that the execution of design is a process. Do not plan a party and send out invitations thinking that it will create a timetable that must be met. Your rooms will be finished when they are finished and all of your pushing and crying won’t make it happen any sooner. You must honor the process. • Enjoy the process. I have been lecturing on this topic for years. What most people forget when they start decorating/designing is,
they are supposed to be having a good time. You are going to invest your hard- earned money, take your time and have some fun spending it! • Authenticity. I saved this one for last because; the word itself is so overused today. Being authentic is not something you do and choose. It is the way you live and the choices you make based on your intimate wishes and desires. It can take the form of a sofa, a paint color, a party guest list, an article of clothing, what you eat, and on and on and on. As always, what I wish for you is a home and a life filled with the things and the people that you love. Surrounded by comfort, fond memories and rooms that speak to who you are as an individual. Take pride in your home and your life and then share them both with the world. Live Well! Dann Foley www.danninc.com designerdann: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | Pinterest | LinkedIn

WELLNESS
TIS THE SEASON, ACHOO! BY JILL LANGHAM
Well, it’s that time of year again and Palm Springs Pride is upon us! And with it comes the end of the scalping season in our valley. I don’t know about you, but since returning from my overseas adventure in September with one of the worst cases of bronchitis that I’ve had in years, I can honestly say that this allergy season has been horrible!
there a way to determine how many OTC allergy medications were bought and how many visits to doctor’s offices and walk in clinics were because of allergy symptoms? Can this number be compared to other years? Are “misters” putting too much water in our air causing the dew point to raise creating mold and providing moisture to spores, which in turn come alive again?
I’ve written about it on my Facebook page and have had quite a few people tell me that it’s been really bad for them as well. I remember a few years ago when we were experiencing a drought, that some type of ordinance had been passed requiring landscapers to stop “scalping” the grasses down to the ground and instead leave the old grasses higher. I had allergy symptoms then, but nothing like now.
Here are some of things that I asked myself. Am I buying over the counter antihistamines more frequently? Are my sinuses more congested than they had been? Are my eyes, either dryer or tearing more and more bloodshot? Am I sneezing more? Is my head more congested than normal? Do I smell mold in the air? Are my nasal passages dryer or am I having nosebleeds or seeing blood in my Kleenex after sneezing or blowing my nose? Do I have a dry cough? Do I hear others sneezing or blowing their noses more than normal?
It really makes me wonder about a few things that might be hurting our city as well as the whole valley. Should scalping occur and what are the parameters? Is it a necessary or is it frivolous? Is
32 THESTANDARDPS.COM
And no big surprise, all of the questions had the same answer, that being “YES!” I’ve talked about the relationship of allergies to the foods we are eating, as well as it being the sign of a congested liver but outdoor allergies, like hay fever are both seasonal and geographical. My Mom had bad hay fever while I was growing up and every year in late August and through September she suffered with sneezing, coughing, nose blowing and nosebleeds, congestion and other nasty symptoms. I honestly didn’t know I suffered from it too but can verify that every August and September, I had a terrible headache that no aspirin could eradicate. Who knew that was a sign of allergies? Not me, or my family. But as I got older, more allergies developed until I now have a full-blown case of them! The Over-the-Counter fixes scare me. I keep seeing the correlation between Alzheimer’s and antihistamine use. Is it true? I don’t know but it’s been in my family and I don’t need any help there, thank you anyway, so I instead look for more natural remedies. Thyme tea, which I wrote about a few flu seasons ago, continues to be my go-to aide. It’s inexpensive, easy to make and very effective for both bronchitis and parasites! (Interesting to me) A few sprigs of thyme, covered in near boiling water and steeped for 5
YOUR SPACE
minutes makes a tasty and helpful decongestant. Using honey from the region has been recommended to reduce local allergens effects but I have personally never noticed a difference at all, sorry to say. A humidifier and anything eucalyptus does the trick as well. Keeping my cardio up also keeps things moving but for me it’s a necessity that the cardio takes place indoors. I find that if I breathe deeply outside my lungs get tight and my cough worsens. It has even affected my ability to go to Oscar’s, which is very dangerous to me. Do you remember me mentioning how depressed I got last summer when Oscar’s had lost its liquor license? Well the same thing happens when I don’t dance at least once a week. I have to let that spirit out, much like a racehorse that needs to run that track in full out speed! So, this is all to say that I have looked forward to Palm Springs Pride because that means the allergy season if over and I can get back to being The Dancing Queen of Palm Springs! Have a Fantastic Pride! XOXO Jill, Your Dancing Queen!

TRANSCENDENCE
TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE EXPERIENCING EXISTENTIAL DREAD BY CHRISTINA VRONAY RUGGLES
Eventually my next encounter with Charlotte occurred. Happily, before the next meeting, however far apart they were. I had, rather reasonably bitched and moaned about not having ANYTHING feminine except a hot pink wig, some knee high socks, and a lacy red bra, that went sadly unfilled. You know, lacking breasts and all that. Quite the tragedy it was. Like many parts of my early transition, Charlotte made it her quest to fix this horrific injustice. This crime against hotness. Instead of handcuffs and hard steel bars, today, justice looked like taking me shopping. And that day, Lady Justice was far from blind. She would be dispensing “Oh, that’s so cute” and “You’re colorblind, right, ya don’t wear that” in equal measures. I borrowed my parent’s car once more and picked Charlotte up from her place in downtown LA, and we drove to Hollywood for the trans-feminizing essentials. The first stop was a high-quality wig shop. I wasn’t comfortable growing out my hair just quite yet, so this was a far superior solution. Knowing how much this would help me, knowing this would get me closer to looking as dazzling as Charlotte, knowing this may quiet the restless tidal waves of angst and self-loathing, knowing all that did nothing to quell the fear, anxiety, and embarrassment I felt walking into that wig shop, a grubby boy, standing next to the divine pillar of womanhood that is Charlotte. But she didn’t make me feel like a boy. Neither did the shopkeeper, though I think that she simply bended to Charlotte’s iron will in referring to me as a girl. Something we had discussed on the drive over. She asked me how I wanted my pronouns in public, what my name was. I had yet to don the mantle of Christina just quite yet, but I eagerly accepted the female pronouns, feeling slightly less like a worm invading the world of women. I had a few wigs I liked, but the one that Charlotte encouraged and pushed me towards, was this auburn-brownish, shoulder length number. It had a bit of a slight curl, which ended up as a noticeable wave with a hint of bounce to it. After a brief trim from the shopkeeper, I handed her my debit card and walked out with
36 THESTANDARDPS.COM
the wig, a little foam mannequin head, a net for my head, a brush and a special spray to take care of the wig, and some very detailed care instructions. The next leg of today’s adventure was a sex/other naughty things shop. This one was less weird, somehow, but I did feel greasy walking inside. This was new to me. Charlotte was the first friend I’d made that my parents didn’t know about, and she wasn’t hesitating on corrupting me. For the best, though. I don’t think queer people should spend a lot of time being innocent, when being a filthy degenerate is this much fun. Back to that greasy sex shop, and why we strode in like an angel and her imp. We were there for breast forms. Like packers, except, you know, breasts. Better than socks and water balloons, both of which I had used at that point. We got some to match that lacy, red bra of mine, and were soon gone. It felt strange to be holding my hair, and breasts in blank plastic bags, marching down the streets of
Hollywood. But maybe it’s the most authentic Los Angeles experience I’ll ever have. Who knows? After getting back to the car, we were going to Hollywood Blvd proper for some shopping. I was still new to driving, and therefore even more unaccustomed to the nightmare that was driving through that street and arriving and parking. Charlotte was a mixture of cussing out other drivers, disappointed sighs, and laughing at my blunders. I felt like I’d evaded death when I stepped out of that car and back onto the real world and its many floors. Our next stop was Forever 21. I was 18 years old, and a freshfaced girl. I was also tall and skinny, so clearly, this was the best place to take me shopping. I had suggested thrifting, but Charlotte encouraged me to buy new, at least for this first outfit. Butterflies need to emerge beautiful, yes? This is where I was starting to feel confident. But to be honest I don’t remember the shopping experience. I remember buying the wig, buying my soon to be breasts, I can remember driving and parking, or at least the anxiety surrounding it, but I cannot for the
life of me remember what the hell happened in the Forever 21. I do remember that Charlotte had to leave early to meet a friend, leaving me to do the last bit of our planned adventure alone. I had to tackle the Sephora trip solo. It didn’t actually go terribly bad. I had a bunch of lies on why some boy like me had to buy a bunch of makeup, and I think it was that I was doing some community theatre. Some pile of jumbled and ever more complex lies is all I can recall. And the bill, and how proud I was of my salesman for making me spend almost $300 dollars on this trip alone. In the end I left with a lot less money, but a lot of hope. It took me a while to get back home, and I didn’t want to try everything on immediately, I wanted to wait until the house was all asleep so that I could assemble myself. Once it happened, oh reader, OH MY, I SAW HER. For the first time I saw her! The me, the future! I saw through the shoulders, the jaw, the everything I’m still dysphoric about. I saw her, and I wept with pure joy. For one of the first times in my life, I was happy. Actually happy.

TOM GOSS LIKES HIS MEN
“ROUND IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES” BY MIKE BAHR
It’s no secret that pop singer Tom Goss is attracted to plus-sized men. Five years after the release of “Bears” — his song that continues to play at gay bear bars and fur festivals worldwide — he is reinstating his commitment to them with “Round in All the Right Places,” a soulful new track that combines sultry lyrics with shapely tones. “Even after ‘Bears’, people would constantly ask me if I really had a thing for large men,” Tom says. “I used to get annoyed by the question, but then I started to reflect on it and I came to the conclusion that I hadn’t done an adequate job of describing what
40 THESTANDARDPS.COM
is so intoxicating to me about men of size. For this one, I wanted to write something that was more specific and mature. I didn’t want to hold back. I wanted to be direct, honest and graphic; to really convey the shape, the allure, the seduction of big men.” He admits how he tried to write ‘Round in all the Right Places’ for some time, but what was coming out simply wasn’t working for him. “Then I got a text from a friend who happens to be round and absolutely beautiful. I asked him what he hated most about his body. He said his Flintstone feet. I was floored, mainly because, to
me, everything about his body is stunning. So I began asking other men of size the same question and no one was able to tell me, ‘not a damn thing, I love it all!’” Goss hopes to flip the script on perceived beauty with his song. “The world is telling plus sized people that their butts are sagging and their bellies are too flabby. ‘Change who you are, lose it at all costs,’ we’re told. Then we wonder why people often view themselves in a negative light. I want to send some messaging out into the world that says the opposite.” It’s messaging he, too, could use. “My mother has always struggled with body issues and has most certainly passed those anxieties down to me. I have bought into society’s vision of beauty. I feel very constrained by it on a day-to-day basis. In some ways, my success depends on it. Image is everything, is it not? The music industry says I must be thin, so I do my best to stay thin. I long for the day when I can fully accept my body, in whatever state it is at the time.” He’s not alone. According to the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA), while gay men make up just 5 percent of the national male population, they account for 42 percent of men who report having an eating disorder. Tom Goss was raised in Kenosha, Wisconsin, a small city on Lake Michigan, between Chicago and Milwaukee. His parents divorced when he was in the 4th grade. It was not, and is still not, a good situation. He learned at a very young age that relationships can be damaging and cause pain. As a result, he didn’t go on his first date until he was 22, while in seminary, training to be a Catholic priest. “I had spent my high school years focused on wrestling, my studies and friends. I didn’t have the typical emotional or sexual drive that other guys seemed to have. Honestly, I thought it was something everyone around me was making up.”
It wasn’t until he fell in love (with a plus-sized man) that he realized that he did have sexual and emotional desires. They were just buried and misdirected. Instead of looking at women, or at men that society deemed beautiful, his attraction was toward gay men called bears. “Once I realized what I liked, it was easy to find beauty and sexual attraction everywhere I looked,” he says. The “Round in All the Right Places” music video features some of the plus-sized men of Tom’s dreams. “Dexter and Robert are two men I’ve admired for years. I found Shane and Lawrence through social media, and when I realized was missing a big, burly, whitehaired gentlemen, I reached out to Ken, who I follow on Instagram. He’s stunningly beautiful and has such dynamic tattoos. I knew I had to capture them on film! I called him and a week later he was on a plane to the shoot.” Tom Goss directed and co-produced the “Round in All the Right Places” video himself with additional production and cinematography by Nathaniël Siri. “I couldn’t be happier with the visuals, and the beautiful men behind the visuals,” Tom continues. “Yes, I absolutely objectify the men, but I’m careful to do it in a way that is respectful, artistic and focused on that which makes them beautiful and unique. Too often in media, large men are painted as villains or buffoons, the butt of a joke. The goal here was to uplift and empower men of size and embrace their beauty.” “Round in All the Right Places” is Tom’s opus to plus-sized men but its message is a universal one. “Everyone should see the beauty in themselves and love every inch of their bodies.” Check out Tom Goss at Palm Springs Pride Nov 2-4 Visit http://tomgossmusic.com Follow Tom on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram PHOTO CREDIT Daren Cornell

MODERNISM WEEK FALL PREVIEW BY BOB BOGARD
LA VIE EN ROSE
GREEN GABLES
Modernism Week’s 2018 Fall Preview will take place October 18-21 at various locations in the Coachella Valley. The weekend’s events provide attendees with a sampling of the events and activities that will be offered during the annual 11-day festival in February 2019. Highlights of the October Fall Preview include a wide range of events in Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, and Indian Wells including walking tours, Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus tours and Charles Phoenix-led bus tours, a tour showcasing homes across a range of neighborhoods, and a new mix of home tours, educational events, and evening cocktail parties.
Designed by Palmer-Krisel and built in 1958 by the Alexander Construction Company, this 3 bedroom 2 bathroom home is undergoing a complete renovation by H3K Design. The house sits on an oversized manicured lot at the gateway to the Twin Palm development – the first major Alexander sub-division in Palm Springs. The High Gable roofline is a quintessential example of mid-century modern design with walls of glass, dramatic ceilings floating in air and natural stone walls. This is the public debut of the house, which features an expanded master bathroom, a restored interior atrium and a kitchen that pays homage to the kitchens of the day.
Fall Preview allows attendees to get a sneak peak at what they might experience in February, including two Featured Homes. Modernism Week veteran designer Christopher Kennedy returns to Fall Preview with La Vie En Rose, a Modernism Week Featured Home (open Friday– Sunday, 9 am - 1:30 pm, $30) that debuts a spectacular renovation of a quintessential midcentury property. This 1958 home is in posh Vista Las Palmas and backs up to the San Jacinto mountains. In February, Kennedy will also offer tours of a different house, the 2019 Modernism Week Show House: The Christopher Kennedy Compound, featuring designs from 15 interior designers.
Hallmarks of Modernism Week events are the inspirational and educational tours of neighborhoods and homes. New tours this year include:
The other Modernism Week Featured Home is H3K Design’s Green Gables (open Saturday and Sunday, 9 am - 1:30 pm, $30).

Steel x Three Tour, Saturday 10 am - 1 pm, $50 This tour is a rare opportunity to visit three of the iconic Steel Development Houses (Steel #1, #2 and #4) designed by the architectural firm of Wexler & Harrison in 1962. The steel houses show how the combination of architectural imagination and factorybuilt components created a flexibility of construction that continues to inspire architects today. Organized by the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation.

The Modern Heritage Home Tour (Rancho Mirage & Palm Springs) Saturday 1 - 5 pm, $150 Seven properties, seven unique examples of Desert Modernism, and one incredible tour. This tour profiles homes designed by midcentury masters Albert Frey, Donald Wexler, Jon Walling, and more. The tour will conclude with a signature cocktail, at the last house on the tour. Organized by Palm Springs Modern Committee. Returning tours include the popular Cul-de-Sac Experience and Framed Spaces home tours. The “Cul-de-Sac Experience” at Canyon View Estates #4 will take place on Sunday, October 21 at 10 am. This tour combines vintage automobiles artfully displayed on the driveways of six homes designed by William Krisel in a quaint culde-sac in South Palm Springs. Participants have access to all of the homes on the tour, and tickets are $65. The “Framed Spaces Home Tour” on Saturday, October 20 will feature a collection of modernist homes that accentuates the “art” of living in the desert. What Modernism Week experience would be complete without ending the day with a spectacular cocktail party at an architecturally significant home? This year, Fall Preview attendees may attend: On Friday, October 19, Fall Preview attendees are invited to attend the festive Opening Night Party and Early Buying
Preview Reception at the Modernism Show & Sale at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The popular Show and Sale, which offers important 20th and 21st century objects, furniture, art and textiles from more than 40 premier national and international decorative and fine arts dealers, continues on Saturday and Sunday. The Friday night party is the prime opportunity for shopping direct from dealers before the show opens to the public on Saturday. Tickets are available in advance at modernismweek.com or at the door. Popular returning events include Modernism Week’s signature Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tour that provides guests with a 2.5-hour overview of significant civic and commercial buildings, as well as residential properties. Daily tours depart from the parking lot of H3K Home, located at 501 South Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs, where Modernism Week will have a box office where attendees may purchase tickets to Fall Preview events.
For complete schedule of the Fall Preview visit modernismweek. com. Following the Fall Preview, Modernism Week’s signature 11day festival will take place February 14-24, 2019. The schedule and tickets will be available November 1 at 12 p.m. PST. To receive updates, visit modernismweek.com and follow on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

PERSPECTIVE
THE QUEEN AND I DARYL JAMES, JR.
The Queen of England and I have a lot in common. First of all, we are both queens. Secondly, we were both born in 1926, she in April, I in May. Had my grandfather James not immigrated here in the late nineteenth century, there is a good chance I might be one of her loyal subjects. Thirdly, both Elizabeth and I were blessed with a sibling born in 1930. Hers was a sister, Princess Margaret Rose and mine was a brother, Don Madden James. Sadly both these siblings have left us in the past ten years. So here we are alone, well, not really. She has most all of England loving her as well as her consort, Prince Phillip, not to mention all those Windsors, her children and grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, including most importantly, her direct heir to the throne, bonny Prince Charles. Well maybe bonny is a bit outdated, as Charlie is getting rather long in tooth, probably quietly impatient for his mother to move on and let him grab the sunshine and take the reins of royal leadership. So ‘Liz does have a few advantages over me, even though we share the same birth year. But I have White Cat and Dudley, my dog who warms my hearth and home and heart.
And yes, I am blessed with a passel of nephews and nieces who occasionally pay me lip service, but not so much to make me think I was Queen of my family realm. All of them except my very beloved brother’s family, my surviving four first cousins and my cousin Marge Young’s family who have adopted me as Grandpa Daryl. From them I get the royal treatment and I love it. Both Queen Elizabeth and I have been further blessed with both of us enjoying reasonably good health, which has taken us considerably beyond life expectancy of the constantly changing actuarial tables. Yes, the Queen and I are beating the odds and seem destined to continue our elderly mobile status for several more years, which certainly appeals to me. I find life quite sweet, not as grand as a reigning monarch but nonetheless, my cup runneth over and I want not anything beyond my current lifestyle. Fully aware of the slender thread that separates us from our mortality, I am optimistic that I might challenge my Grandfather James’ life span of one hundred four years. And Queen ‘Liz is also gifted with genes that just might carry her over the century mark, if Queen Mother Elizabeth’s one hundred one year life span, is any criterion. Both Grandpa James and Queen ‘Mum, gave us a role model
OCTOBER 2018 45
PERSPECTIVE on how to sail through the so-called “ Golden Years”. Queen Mum was a camp, she did not suffer fools gladly, surrounded herself with a loving support staff of mostly gays who made her laugh while making certain that a strong scotch and tonic was readily available. My beloved paternal grandfather, Thomas R. James, kept the grim reaper at bay for one hundred four years, and every one of those years were milked to the max with the joy of life. A mason by trade, he never really retired, working as a plasterer with his two sons, and when he started slowing down, eighty sevens years old, he was laying brick for a three story chimney on his daughter’s new home. At ninety-one-he singlehandedly crafted a beautiful flagstone garden for his favorite daughter in law, my mother. As his eyesight began to fade, he started memorizing poetry and got the bug, started writing his own verse. Queen Elizabeth and I can learn too much from these two mentors and if the fates carry us both to the century mark, I would hope to have an opportunity to personally celebrate with my fellow centurion. Which brings me back to my final parallel that just might in some strange way, bind Elizabeth II and me as we make preparations for where and how we will spend eternity.
Of course the queen will be laid to rest in Westminster Abbey, joining the impressive company of her regal ancestors, including Henry the Eighth, her grandparents King George and Queen Mary and her father King George and the Queen ‘Mum. Here of course the parallels in our lives diverge radically as it has in life, but I am instructing my heirs to avoid at all costs any consideration of cremation. Instead I would like the traditional casket, coffin, and the bagpipes sending me on my way on a modest military service, concluding with taps echoing across the Iowa farmland. Maybe five thousand years from now archaeologists will know more about the twentieth and twenty first centuries as they find my long decayed cadaver. And perhaps, just perhaps some other archaeologists on the other side of the planet will learn more of English Royalty as they unearth my queenly soul mate. If after reading this, you are led to believe that I am suffering from delusions of grandeur, then grab the brass ring, as you are right. But if I amused you, made you laugh, then my tale is a worthy reminder to never take life too seriously. A Gay Man’s Odyssey through the 20th Century and Beyond
