Q&A

BLAME IT ON BIANCA BY CHRIS ASTRALA Bianca Del Rio is the season six reigning winner of Logo TV’s hit series RuPaul’s Drag Race. In December 2014, she received the Best New Television Personality award from NewNowNext. Global accolades along with a Live Nation comedy tour brought the beloved New Orleans entertainer once known as Roy Haylock into the scrutinizing public eye. Gigs throughout the world, a commercial debut for Starbucks, critical acclaim by The New York Times, even an interview on the late Joan Rivers’ popular show In Bed with Joan, followed. Years of dedication and hard work paid off for this controversial comedian and drag queen. A self-proclaimed “clown in a dress” with a raw and racy edge, Bianca Del Rio is a costume designer and theatrical performer, as well as the familiar wisecracking artist that emerged on the New Orleans nightclub circuit in 1996 and garnered awards. Long before her success on RuPaul’s Drag Race, she appeared on MTV, A&E, and the Travel Channel. Now a resident of New York City, Bianca Del Rio continues to tour the world captivating fans with her sharp wit, dismembering humor, and perceptive commentary in a brash, metro kick to the ego— everything and everyone is her target. Step into her line of verbal fire for an unforgettable, humbling experience. Bianca Del Rio, rounds out her 3rd solo world tour, “Blame it On Bianca,” with a final stop in Palm Springs. Don’t miss your final chance to see Bianca, self-proclaimed “expert on nothing with an opinion on everything” on this tour. We had the chance to exclusively speak with Bianca to see why everyone is “Blaming” it on her. Thank you so much for taking time to answer a few questions for The Standard Magazine readers. So let’s get right to it. What or who inspires your act? The ridiculousness of the world inspires my comedy. I always try to find the humor in everything...even if it’s at my own expense. Like RuPaul says, “If you can’t laugh at yourself, how the fuck are you gonna laugh at someone else?” That’s what she says right? Something like that.

Q&A You seem to have a great deal of confidence, was that always the case? Nope. It only started after I began drinking. So I gained my confidence at the ripe, old age of 12. Remember...I’m from New Orleans where you’re old enough to drink alcohol when you’re old enough to hold your own bottle. How did the name Bianca Del Rio come about? I remember back in the day an “art film” actress by the name Vanessa Del Rio, is the Del Rio from her? Was she pretty? If she was pretty, then “No.” I don’t remember where my name came from. I drink...a lot. In fact I’m drinking right now, so my memory past yesterday is a bit fuzzy. (Bianca doesn’t like discussing the origin of her name because she’s in the witness protection program.) What was the idea behind the Hurricane Bianca movies? Both very funny by the way. All credit for the movies goes to the creator and director, my friend Matt Kugelman. He came up with the idea over 10 years ago. We did some crowdfunding for it before I went on Drag Race, but he had to put the project on hold when I was selected to be on Drag Race. It worked out to our benefit in the end because we were able to do another round of crowdfunding after my season of Drag Race aired, and we were able to raise enough money to bring the project to life. If you enjoyed the first two, stay tuned because more will be coming! In the August edition of The Standard Magazine we did a review of “Blame it On Bianca Del Rio” Hilarious! I’ve heard that writing a book is like therapy; do you think so? I only did it for money and fame. Educating and giving advice to the less fortunate people of the world was just a side effect. Glad you enjoyed it though. If you weren’t doing drag what would you be doing? I would be dressed as a clown and terrorizing children at birthday parties. The only difference is I’m currently terrorizing adults instead of children. You’ve just come off a world tour, (you must be exhausted) where was your favorite gig and why? Are you saying I look tired?? Rude!!

I’m incredibly fortunate and grateful to get to travel the world spreading my hate. If I complained about being exhausted, I’d be a douche. I’ve been to many amazing cities, but Amsterdam is probably my favorite. It’s a lovely city and everyone is so happy...probably because they’re all stoned. Plus I can always make a little side money working in the Red Light district. There’s actually a section in my show dedicate to my experiences in Amsterdam. Soon you will be performing in Palm Springs, have you been here before and what are you looking forward to the most? Shockingly, I’m probably the only old gay man who hasn’t been to Palm Springs. I’m beyond excited to finally be going. I’m hoping to find a boyfriend there. You in 3 words… Bozo the clown. And finally; what advise would you give an up and coming queen? And no I am not asking for myself. DON’T DO IT!! IT’S A TRAP!! You think it’ll be fun to dress up in drag for Halloween one year, and suddenly it’s 22 years later and you’re STILL in drag. Help support AAP - Food Samaritans, a portion of the proceeds from Bianca’s show will go towards AAP! CELEBRITY PHOTOGRAPHER MIKE RUIZ PRESENTS THE

BULLIES & BICEPS 2019 CALENDAR BY JOHN STEIN

Everyone loves photos of adorable pit bull pups. So what happens when you pair the cutest pooches on earth —who just happen to be in need of forever homes — with beautiful, hunky men? This year’s most buzzed-about calendar. Photographer Mike Ruiz’s 2019 calendar,

20 THESTANDARDPS.COM

“Bullies and Biceps,” is fourteen months of perfection (2 bonus months in 2020) that will put a smile on your face every day of the New Year. Honoring the memory of his own beloved pitbull, Oliver and benefitting New York Bully Crew Pet Rescue.

Mike Ruiz is a celebrity photographer, whose clients include Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and countless others. In addition to his work in Hollywood, Ruiz is known for shooting top male fitness models. “I admire men who have sculpted their bodies into works of art,” he says. “It takes incredible skill and knowledge to form human tissue to near perfection. Photographing their work is quite gratifying to me.” The men featured in “Bullies and Biceps” are some of the biggest male fitness models working today including Bryan Richards, Michael Dean, Nick Topel and cover-model Casey Christopher. Collectively, they have hundreds of thousands of followers on social media. They also are all passionate about animal rescue. Mike Ruiz, too, is a pit bull rescuer and this year’s calendar is in special tribute to Oliver, his beloved canine, who passed away last month. Mike and Oliver shared six wonderful years together. It was Oliver who inspired Mike to fuse his two passions — photography and pit bulls — together into a calendar that would benefit dogs in need of rescue. The pit bulls that appear in the calendar were chosen at random and represent only a fraction of those in need. “This is a very sad time to be in rescue,” explains Carla Mohan of the New York Bully Crew. “People are giving up their dogs without remorse. Pit bull type dogs are especially vulnerable because most rescues shy away from saving them due to lack of experience, knowledge and the negative media coverage the beautiful creatures have received.” Founded by Craig Fields in 2010, New York Bully Crew specializes in the rescue, rehabbing and rehoming of pit bull type

dogs. They partner with city shelters around the country to help local animals and have also begun outreach in Puerto Rico, Honduras, Peru, and South Korea. “Pit bulls are the most loyal and loving dogs,” Carla continues. “They are soulful creatures that can be the silliest best friend ever. I have had many different breeds of dogs in my life, but none compare to pit bulls.” She hopes the calendar will open people’s eyes and hearts and change misconceptions about this goofy and jolly breed. While shooting the calendar, the pit bulls on set stole the hearts of the super gorgeous male models. “I wanted to take them all home with me,” laughs Casey Christopher. Every dollar made from the sale of the “Bullies and Biceps” 2019 calendar will go directly to New York Bully Crew for various services benefitting the health and welfare of the dogs. “The calendar makes the perfect holiday gift and also brings awareness to these special animals,” says Mike Ruiz. “Every pit bull deserves a forever home.” Mike Ruiz’s 2019 calendar, “Bullies and Biceps” is available for only $24.99 at www.nybullycrew.org

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER Boy or girl? That’s a common enough question, if you’re an expectant parent. You might’ve even wondered it yourself: will you need pink things or blue, and what name will you choose? For generations, it’s been an exciting decision for prospective parents, but Ann Travers asks in “The Trans Generation” if it’s a prudent one. Maybe letting the child decide would be a better choice. Fifty-six years ago, when Travers was born, their mother’s doctor unwittingly caused a lifetime of hurt: “It’s a girl,” he said, and Travers spent years trying to “untangle” what it meant. That, they said, is part of what drives this book. The other part is the desire to improve the lives of trans kids through understanding. Getting to that point is harrowing: Ninety-five percent of transgender kids on one study felt unsafe in their schools. Many report that physicians misunderstand kids who are gender-nonconforming. Trans kids attempt suicide and / or self-harm at very high rates and, says Travers, “… many grow up hating their bodies…” Most employ several kinds of coping mechanisms to live their lives. In writing this book, Travers says, they interviewed a wide variety of trans kids from the U.S. and Canada – nineteen in all, ages 4 to 20, plus twenty-three parents. The children mostly came from middle-class families, which allowed them privileges such as better access to medical care and chances to change schools if they needed to do so. Other children Travers interviewed lived in poverty, their stories illustrating how being a trans kid can be socially and medically isolating, and how lack of access to needed resources can affect their well-being. Parents, of course, can affect that well being, too, but it takes a “phenomenal amount of care, advocacy, and activism… to push back against cisgendered environments,” schools, sports, binary-only bathrooms, social activities, medical facilities, and politics. It takes a willingness to learn, listen, and lean in. Not just for parents, but also for teachers, advocates, and loved ones, “The Trans Generation” is one heavy-duty book. Writing with a bit of a scholar’s voice and occasional, relatively advanced, science and law studies, author Ann Travers also offers readers plenty of eye-opening chats with trans kids, which turn out to be the most helpful, useful, and even entertaining parts of this book. From the mouths of babes, as they say, those interviews give insights that adults will find to be wise and thoughtful, even monumental. They’re also heartbreaking but considering the kids readers are introduced to, and the singular interview with a 16-year-old who

made her own hormone treatments in her high school’s laboratory, they’re a good indication of hope for the future. While you could be forgiven for skipping to those case studies, you’d be missing out. The thicker parts of “The Trans Generation” are worth reading and reflection and are deeply instructive on pronouns, on gender fluidity, and on being trans in a cisgender-based society. They are also serious and weighty but that kind of rock-solid information could make this book the right choice. “The Trans Generation: How Trans Kids (and Their Parents) are Creating a Gender Revolution” by Ann Travers c.2018, New York University Press / $25.00 / higher in Canada 261 pages

OLIVER MAYER DELIVER A KNOCKOUT PUNCH WITH “MEMBERS ONLY” BY MICHEL KHORDOC

MAYER & DON ALDO

OLIVER MAYER

Critically acclaimed Mexican American playwright & Professor of Dramatic Writing at USC School of Theatre, Oliver Mayer returns to the ring with MEMBERS ONLY. “Members Only” is the long-awaited stand-alone sequel to the groundbreaking Blade To The Heat - Mayer’s controversial play about a 1950’s nobody-turned-championship boxer forced to confront his own sexuality after a dethroned champion accuses him of being gay. Pop Icon, Madonna had originally bought the rights to the story.

ensemble cast including Jon Huertas, Marlene Forte, Darrin Henson, Carolyn Zeller, Ron Alvarez, Hansford Prince and Geoff Rivas. And amazingly, Ray Oriel (who played Quinn) and Sal Lopez (who played Alacran) in the 1996 Mark Taper Production will be reprising their roles.

Opening last month at LATC (Latino Theater Company), “Members Only” is a play about an America of color forging racial and sexual identities to the pulsating beat of Willie Colon and Blondie, on the cusp of discovery, at the edge of a plague. Directed by José Luis Valenzuela the play features an all-stars

24 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Serving the LA Theater community for over 3 decades, Mayer is one of the most influential faces of the Los Angeles Arts & Theater community. He continuously excels at delivering socially engaged artistic creations that ultimately represent a rich historical record of the multicultural landscape of our society and the very socio-politicoeconomic issues affecting it. We sat down with Mayer to talk about the importance and relevancy of this play and how it has the chance to inform us about the choices we have made as a country, particularly in terms of how

we treat one another when it comes to ethnic and sexual difference and identity. What makes this play a Must-See play? Seen through the seminal lens of 1982 (and drawing comparisons to 2018), Members Only brings together gay and straight sexuality into the worlds of boxing, dance and bath clubs, film and family. It also uses the greatest sounds of the early 80s, from Blondie to Laurie Anderson to Willie Colon. It’s been a few years since Blade to the Heat came out, why bring the sequel now? It’s been over 20 years since Blade To The Heat sold out the Mark Taper Forum main stage. This play follows the surviving characters from BLADE in real time; that play ended in 1960, so Members Only begins in 1982 -- a time rich in culture and music, and incredibly dangerous due to the scourge of an as-yet unnamed disease, and because of rampant gay-bashing. Amazingly, Ray Oriel (who played Quinn) and Sal Lopez (who played Alacran) in the 1996 Mark Taper Production will be reprising their roles. It promises to be an amazing event, not only for those who remember the past, but also for young audiences today hungering for frank honesty about love, sex and staying alive. What makes you play current and relevant within today’s political and social landscape? After the lie was propagated about America becoming a postracial society, we now see how divided we really are about not only race, but sexuality, gender, ethnicity and simple choice. This play tackles the problem by imagining a time just before AIDS was named, when sexual behavior and identity was open-ended, when people of color were beginning to find equal footing in public as

well as private, and when a hopeful, more equal, future seemed possible. By watching this modern Greek-style tragedy on American themes unfold, audiences can think about their own lives and choices -- and those of who have chosen differently. Members Only takes place in the early 80s at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. How does it impact your play & characters? My generation is steeped in the experience of AIDS, whether we realize it consciously or not. It sculpted us. This play is about the survivors, in this case those of us of color; who somehow escaped the scourge. Whether or not we identified as gay, we were there on the front lines, before the disease even had a name. And seemingly by luck, some of us were spared while others were taken before their time. Whether on the dance floor or in the boxing ring, all of us were in the line of fire. Why was it important for you to write this sequel? Members Only has taken years to come together. I realized that the story of Pedro Quinn has the chance to inform us about the choices we have made as a country, particularly in terms of how we treat one another in terms of ethnic and sexual difference and identity. This seems to me to be fundamental to understanding who we really are. If I live long enough, I intend to write the third play of what will be the Quinn Trilogy. What message you hope your audience leaves with? Despite the pain and violence on stage, I believe that the message is decidedly hopeful. Life and love are unstoppable, and -- as we see in current American politics -- the venom of hate and ignorance will not kill us as long as we fight it together. INDESIGN THE BEST LOCAL CHRISTMAS FINDS… BY DANN FOLEY Yay Christmas! It is truly my favorite time of the year. Truth be told, I start planning for the Holidays in late summer. As of the writing of this article, I already have half of my Christmas gift shopping completed! I cannot help myself, I always have in mind the people I am buying for and as such, when I see that perfect gift(s) I figure, why wait!? My family and friends refer to me as the ultimate gift giver. Living up to that moniker means lots of prep work (which I actually love). The Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival presents two new Jazz at Sundown concerts, beginning December 1 with the electrifying Nona Hendrix at the Indian Wells Theater in Palm Desert. Hendryx is probably still best known as a member of LaBelle, the popular R&B group of the 70’s and 80’s headed by the legendary Patti LaBelle. However, since then she has made her mark as a dynamic highenergy entertainer across all musical genres from R&B to Pop and Jazz. In recent years she has been on the music scene touring with jazz royalty, multi Grammy-winning drummer, Terri Lyne Carrington.

PSP FOCUS Hendryx kicks off the Holiday Season with a group of stellar female musicians led by popular jazz pianist, Sunny Paxson and including renowned blues guitarist Kat Dyson. Hendryx fans can expect an evening of both the new and old with material from her recent albums and, of course, favorites from her days with LaBelle. FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS PARADE Consistently voted one of the best local events in the Coachella Valley, the Palm Springs Festival of Lights parade was also voted one of the Top Ten Holiday Parades in the country in an AOL survey. This year the parade kicks off Saturday December 1 at 5:45pm on Ramon Road and heads north on Palm Canyon Drive. The Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade launched in the early 1990’s along Palm Canyon Drive and has been held every year since on the first Saturday in December — becoming a much-loved holiday tradition in downtown Palm Springs! WESTSIDE NETFLIX’S FIRST EVER UNSCRIPTED MUSIC SERIES Warner Bros. Records is collaborating with Netflix for the exclusive music soundtrack of Westside, Netflix’s first ever-unscripted music series. The series follows the lives of nine young artists struggling for success in today’s high-pressure music industry. On November 9th, the unscripted eight-episode series launches globally on Netflix, same day and date as the release of Westside: The Music, the official 20song soundtrack on Warner Bros. Records. Westside offers a groundbreaking and deeply personal glimpse into the journeys of nine young Los Angeles-based musicians at the heart of the story. Their music spans multiple genres from rock, pop and alternative, to urban and country. As they strive to develop an ensemble performance for a potential showcase at an L.A. nightclub, each episode sheds light on their creative processes and personal struggles. Cinema verité-style documentary footage is interspersed with beautifully produced music videos created by some of the top directors in the field. “Westside struck me immediately as a quantum leap forward in the synergy of contemporary music with the raw vibe of today’s unscripted series innovations,” said Tom Corson, Co-Chairman and COO, Warner Bros. Records. “Musical diversity as a powerful social force is the cornerstone of Westside, and nowhere is that relationship better understood than at Warner Bros. Records.” “The creation of original music for Westside - featuring an unparalleled team of multi-platinum producers/songwriters, working together in real time with the cast and unscripted narrative - has produced a remarkable outcome,” said James Diener, Executive

TRANSCENDENCE

THE END IS NIGH BY CHRISTINA VRONAY RUGGLES

I left off last month having acquired my first dazzling array of gender-confirming items: a beautiful bouncy auburn wig, 2 hefty breast forms, a queen’s bounty of Sephora products, and a pair of clothes I was satisfied with. I believe a creamy, knitted cardigan, dark semi-destressed jeans, and some feminine casual top were the apparel I now had on tap. The bra and the will to be a woman were already among my treasured possessions. At some point between all the experimentation with makeup, poses, outfit(s), and caring about who I was going to be, I came out to my sister as Christina. She had been a guilty idol of mine throughout all our Highschool experience, as she did something I could never bare to do. She hung out with her local gaggle of queer kids. Whether they were in theatre, band, chess club, math club, or no club, this variable band of strangely gendered non-conformists were my sister’s friends. She tried out some things; she questioned things, above all though she was a trailblazer for queerness in my own life. She pruned the latent homophobic and ableist tendencies that are bound to spring up in any boy left up to their own devices on the Internet in those days. She made me a better person; I refused to admit it then. But she did. Thank you, dear sister. Knowing all of that, of course she was the first among my family I troubled with my inability to survive as a member of the male species. She took it in stride, thousands of miles away at University. She supported me. She texted me my she’s and called me her sister, in private, like I asked. She didn’t let her surprise stop her from loving and supporting me. We’d been through a lot, and it was clear we were going to go through a lot more, together. Pancakes are rough; anxiety is rougher. At some point the next meeting dawned on me. I changed in the downstairs bathroom, where I hid my makeup in the void next to the usual under the sink cubby. I did my makeup. I stuffed my bra. I told myself I was worth it. I told myself I was real. I told myself I was Christina. And I strode out into the dark garage, into my parent’s white Prius, and drove into Hollywood. This time I was beginning to be a familiar face. I wasn’t just

Charlotte’s friend. I was their friend! It was something special to have friends from so many walks of life. Some were old; some were here, in this room and simultaneously at a friend’s sleepover a 30-minute’s bus ride away. Some folks would do what I do, peel off our gender reality, and live a lie in our own homes. And for however long that meeting took place in those rich-enough-to-care but not rich enough to overspend walls, we cried and let our eyes dance with the joy of progress. We spoke of revelations, of violations. In those brutalist folding chairs, we hugged and held, not always with our arms, but always with our hearts. The meeting concluded, but our evening was far from over. I was apprehensive, I didn’t want to get home late, raise questions. Some community debate later, some frantic yet relaxed texting to my parents, and we were dining at IHOP. My parents continued to be delighted that I had the ability to stay out late, after they went to bed. The usual warnings of filling up the car, don’t drive drunk, and stay safe were trotted out meaningfully.

I was excited for this opportunity to exist outside of the hallowed ground of the LGBTQIA+ center, but desperately nervous. Without our loving rainbow protection, would some wrathful deity smite us? Would it take shape as lightning from the sky? The big Earthquake? A band of pipe-wielding phobes? Uncertainty bred my fear. For the whole 10-minute drive over I wanted to vomit, to ditch my newfound friends, despite them expecting me. My body chose flight. I let that fear run its course, straight into the IHOP parking lot. Upon opening the classical double glass door setup of many IHOPs, I was immediately transported to a better, fluffier, copypasted reality. And there, in the center, at 2 tables pressed together were the band of gender-defying misfits and lovers I called my support group, that I called my friends. We had a delicious, raucous dinner, with some form of controversial server, either because of her witty remarks, or her misgendering, I forget. But she certainly caused a stir. We’ve been over this reliable narrator bit; I’m not. Asking me to remember 4 years ago is impossible. I’m not sure what I did last week.

What I do remember is what happened as we each squared away our section of the bill. I needed to piss. A classical human activity. But I was Christina. But I wasn’t OUT out. One of the older women, in her wisdom, laughingly prodded me into the women’s restroom. That was a bit of a first. Being in here, peeing in here, as a woman would. As a woman should. As I could. The evening came to a close, cigarettes were probably lit alive, and burnt out in that parking lot as we talked and reminisced about the trouble we would all be returning to. Whether it was mounting bills, an angry spouse, a halfway house, or my unknown situation, we all had some form of domicile to return to, home or not. I went home heart full of courage, knowing I was a woman. Knowing this was the life I had to lead. That would be the last meeting I would attend in Los Angeles, or at all for 3 years. Like many of us across the queer spectrum, I marched/ was marched back into my closet, not to see the light of day. He imprisoned her. Christina would return, but not here, not now.

BEAT BOX

TRACKS TO BE THANKFUL FOR THIS SEASON BY JIMMY NEWSUM

With so much negativity everywhere you look (and to be fair, there are plenty of problems in the world that need solving), it can be refreshing to indulge in some gratitude every now and then. So let’s be thankful for some of the good things that happened this year. Among them, FX’s Pose, the success of Love, Simon, the return of Will & Grace, the ouster of Roseanne from The Connors, and lots of new gay anthems. Here are the top tracks we’re most thankful for this season.

“WANNA BE ME” PrettiBoiRoc Everyone’s favorite twink returns with a nasty jam about selfempowerment and confidence. PrettiBoiRoq wrote “Wanna Be Me” in response to comments he received after the music video for his previous single, “You Don’t Own Me,” went viral on the internet and the adorable little red head was body shamed for not looking like porn star Arad Winwin, featured in the video. The song isn’t as pop infused as we’re used to hearing from PrettiBoiRoq. It has a more trap sound to it that works. It allows him to flex a more traditional hip-hop beat. The song’s music video is as bright and badass as the song. It’ll make ya want to pinch the little naughty boy’s cheeks.

42 THESTANDARDPS.COM

“KINGDOM: THE MIXTAPE” David Hernandez From Pop to R&B, with influences of soul, no one song on the sexy American Idol’s new album is the same. Many reflect on the heartbreaks and loss he has endured over the last decade since rising to fame from the show. The title track is a mid-tempo power ballad that soars with electric guitars, triumphant drums and a grand piano. “Beautiful” is a pop anthem while “Last Supper” and “Animal” are beat driven dance numbers. Then there’s “Break,” an introspective mid-tempo song, where David opens up about his struggles with addiction. It’s a powerful album where David proves he is an adept salesman of emotions, especially of matters of the heart and distance.

“TIME MACHINE” Jack Tracy The latest song from out actor/musician is a call to action, urging liberals to stand together and fight the oppressive right. With an 80s Prince-inspired militaristic beat, it stands apart from most anything else playing on today’s dance floors and that, along with it’s smart lyrics, is what it makes it special. The music video is a

nod to Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation,” shot in black-and-white and featuring many of the same iconic dance moves from the 1989 hit.

“DRAMA QUEEN” Kfir The first single off of Kfir’s Free Delivery EP is catchy, funky and almost a futuristic throwback to the disco era. In addition to it being sung by a dreamy singer who makes his dance floor debut directly from the stages of Broadway, what makes the track stand apart from mainstream releases is it’s biting attitude that seems to take a page from queen of soul Aretha Franklin by unabashedly pointing a critical finger at people who fail to pay proper respect. It doesn’t get more NYC than this.

“SELF CONTROL” Kendra Erika Kendra Erika’s latest single release pays homage to her musical hero, Laura Branigan on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the deceased icon’s 80’s dance hit, “Self Control.” The song has become

one of the defining songs of the 1980s and has received a number of recorded remakes over the years. Notable covers include Ricky Martin’s in 1993 and a hit dance remake by Branigan herself in 2004, the same year of her death from an undiagnosed cerebral aneurysm. Kendra Erika’s version, produced by Grammy Award winning producer Damon Sharpe, adds a futuristic new age spin to the dance classic. Its remix package includes exclusive productions by Ralphi Rosario, Moto Blanco, and Dirty Werk.

“I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU” Jason Walker Two-time Grammy nominated dance producer Tony Moran and Out Music Award winner Jason Walker are together again in a brand new euphoric dance anthem. It is the third #1 from the powerhouse duo whose previous tracks, “So Happy” and “Say Yes,” also climbed to the top position on the Billboard club charts. Written by Tony Moran, Ryan Shaw and Mike Greenly and produced by Tony Moran, “I’m in Love with You” is meant to be a bold declaration of the love we hold in our hearts for those who matter most to us and features another awe-inspiring vocal performance by Walker.

DAVID HERNANDEZ RULES THE KINGDOMFALL PREVIEW BY JOHN STEIN

American Idol’s David Hernandez is proving artists don’t need fancy studios to make a great record anymore. Kingdom: the Mixtape, his first album since 2011’s I Am Who I Am, displays a fresh sound and includes collaborations with fellow American Idol Blake Lewis and the Grammy winning producer of Black Eyed Peas, Printz Board. “I’ve been sitting on most of this material for years, waiting for the right time to release it,” says David Hernandez from his LA home. “I’ve listened to too many people’s opinions about when to release, how, what images and content are appropriate… I was just over listening to what other people think I should do. One day I finally stepped back and realized I had a great body of work that deserves to be heard, now.”

44 THESTANDARDPS.COM

In Kingdom: the Mixtape, David Hernandez delivers 20 original tracks plus a cappella versions of “Kingdom” and “Where Love Begins” as well as a bonus cover of Hailee Steinfeld’s “Starving,” featuring YouTube star Rajiv Dhall. Many of the songs reflect on the heartbreaks and loss Hernandez has experienced over the last decade since rising to fame on American Idol. They explore his rebuilding trust and love, his refusal to give up, his persistence to change for the better and to grow as a human. Other songs touch on forgiveness, joy and fun because as David explains, “Life isn’t always that serious and sometimes you just wanna let go and rage!” From Pop to R&B, with influences of soul, no one song on Kingdom: the Mixtape is the same. The title track, produced by Mikal Blue (Jason Mraz, Colbie Calliat, One Republic) is a mid-tempo power

ballad that soars with electric guitars, triumphant drums and a grand piano. “Beautiful” produced by Mark Grilliot, is a pop anthem while “Last Supper” and “Animal,” produced by Printz Board, are beat driven dance numbers. Then there’s “Break,” an introspective mid-tempo song, produced by Alex Teamer, where David Hernandez opens up about his struggles with addiction. “I wrote the song at a time when I was drinking a lot and popping Xanax. It was an awful time. We were being evicted from our apartment and everything was going to shit. I ended up in rehab and eventually got clean of prescription drugs and life became much better.” He admits it is a daily struggle that he prefers to battle privately but felt compelled to put the song on the Mixtape because prescription drug addition has become an epidemic among youth. “Young people are dying and committing suicide. They need to know there is help,” he says. David Hernandez began singing at age six, starring in musicals and performing with various theatre companies. At fifteen, he started writing original music and recording his arrangements. In addition to American Idol, he has showcased his talents on The Ellen Show, The Today Show, MTV’s TRL, EXTRA, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, Teen Choice Awards, Idol Tonight, FOX-TV’s Idol Gives Back. He was also named among TV Guides’ Sexiest Stars. At the start of his recording career, Hernandez was signed to a major music label but couldn’t meet the high expectations of its executives. “Labels were always telling me to be me but then expected me to fit their mold of what David Hernandez was supposed to be. It was impossible. I felt powerless and lived in constant fear that I would get dropped.”

His feelings about the music industry are reflected in the cover art for Kingdom: the Mixtape. It depicts a crown, symbolizing David and his music, being held by a robotic hand: the music industry. It is intended to illustrate an industry that is fake and how it holds and controls an artist’s work and career. “I hope listeners hear a piece of my soul in Kingdom: the Mixtape,” David Hernandez wraps up. “I hope they get where I am coming from, really see me for who I am, and that they, too, can relate to the songs. I want the Mixtape to be healing, enlightening, and reveling.” Visit: www.davidhernandezofficial.com
