COVER
THE STANDARD MAGAZINE YEAR IN REVIEW BY THE STANDARD MAGAZINE STAFF In the past year The Standard Magazine has covered many topics. So we decided that the year in review would be a year in review at The Standard. Currently I think that many people are fed up with the daily barrage of political ramblings. So as a way to look back we are highlighting excerpts from particular articles from each month that deserve a second gander. You can read the complete story by cutting and pasting the link at the end of each month’s entry in your browser.
JAN JANUARY 2018 Desert AIDS Project Looks to implement the 90-90-90 Strategy In our work to address the health needs of the most vulnerable in our community, including our core focus on those affected by the HIV epidemic, we had believed for some time that the need for services was greater than the statistics illustrated. In November, Riverside County health officials released new data indicating that a staggering 51 percent more people are living with HIV/AIDS in the county than had been previously reported.
FEB FEBRUARY 2018 Omar Shariff’s grandson gives a voice to the voiceless Every morning I wake up to an inbox flooded with disturbing and disheartening messages out of Egypt. The messages come from friends and strangers alike, members of the gay Egyptian community I

The increase was due to a change in the way state health officials collect data on those living with HIV/AIDS, and does not mean there has been a spike in the frequency of the illness, a fivepage report states. The largest increase is within the eastern portion of the county, which includes Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. Previously, there were 3,252 cases reported for 2016 (the latest figure available) compared to 5,522 in the new calculations for the same period. A key piece of the 90-90-90 strategy is ensuring that people with HIV/AIDS have access to care and they remain in treatment and stay healthy, so that the virus is suppressed to levels so low that the virus cannot be passed on to others. Better measurement of how many people need services locally means we can deliver more effectively on this promise we made to the community. https://issuu.com/thestandardmagazine/docs/thestandard_ vol6_issue1
left behind five years ago when I came out as gay and withdrew from the country, hounded by threats of violence, intimidation and even death. The message writers are desperate to do what I did: escape a country gripped by an outbreak of homophobic persecution. Failing that, far too many of the writers say, they want to escape their lives. I do not know what to tell them. I would like to offer them hope. I would like it not to be false hope. It’s difficult to explain to people who came of age during the heady wave of victories for the American LGBTQ movement that our goals in Egypt are much more modest. For the most part, we want only to live in the same quiet we have for generations, free from the terror that the smallest gesture or glance will betray us.
I can’t tell the young gay Egyptians who message me to come out en masse; I don’t want them to be cannon fodder for my ideals. I can’t even tell them to come out to their own families; few of them had the liberalizing experiences my grandparents did, working on movies

the simplest of terms, a bakery in Colorado refused to create a wedding cake for a gay couple that were getting married. The baker’s reason: his religious beliefs. The couple claiming discrimination under equal protection laws filed a suit, and it is now before the U.S. Supreme Court. Oral arguments were heard in December 2017, and it appeared that the court was evenly divided in their views on the issue. A final decision is expected in June 2018. This is a crucial case, which could have longlasting effect on other equal rights issues affecting our community, and will certainly color the future of “religious freedom” claims. https://issuu.com/thestandardmagazine/docs/thestandard_ vol6_issue3
that I decided it was time to write about those significant events, and sat down to pour my heart out. In less than an hour I had written 4500 words. It was cathartic and effortless. I likened it to writing an article for the Standard Magazine where I had recently been asked by Nino Eilets to become a monthly contributor. I didn’t really have any expectations about the “article” but was happy to have completed the task. The next day at work, while I was training a man who was an author of a NY times best selling book, I mentioned my accomplishment. https://issuu.com/thestandardmagazine/docs/thestandard_ vol6_issue4

began to crack. And little by little it opened a bit more and now it seems to be wide open. Athletes now feel no need to keep who they really are from public view. But let us not forget all those who were brave enough to buck the status quo and pave the way to the current environment where sexuality has nothing to do with athletic ability and who you love does not matter as much as becoming the best athlete you possibly can. Here are just a few athletes (and the list keeps growing day to day) who know their sexuality doesn’t define them, their sport does. https://issuu.com/thestandardmagazine/docs/thestandard_ vol6_issue6
Webisodes seem to be the perfect answer to the changing tastes of the young and restless looking for quality content. It’s an age in which the rules of entertainment are changing as fast as the dwindling attention spans of the viewers. Call it new-age entertainment or the future of the world of make-believe, the tentacles of web series are growing sharper and wider. The digital converts might swear by Netflix and its bounties such as House Of Cards and Tudor but the next big thing is that we are succumbing to the charm of web series. Stars are being born, new followers are avidly following their favorites and entertainment buffs are offering guide maps on which series to follow. https://issuu.com/thestandardmagazine/docs/thestandard_ vol6_issue7
UK, as well as the co-founder of Three Lions Pride, a group of LGBTQ England supporters. This year, the soccer fan traveled to Russia with four other Three Lions Pride members to support England as it fought for a place in the finals of the FIFA World Cup (England took fourth overall). But they also had another mission: to hoist their rainbow banner at matches to represent LGBTQ soccer fans everywhere. Russia is notoriously hostile to queer people. Though homosexuality was decriminalized in 1993, its 2013 anti-gay propaganda law has been used to target LGBTQ activists. https://issuu.com/thestandardmagazine/docs/thestandard_ vol6_issue8

Lauren believes she’s lived two lives. Her second path began at 18, when, with the full support of her loving parents and family, she transitioned into a woman. It was the early ‘80s and Lauren was just beginning to experience success as a fashion model. Worried her truth might stunt her burgeoning career, she chose to live stealth; a trans-term that refers to a person who passes as their desired gender and lives in secret. It all came to a head, however, when after appearing in Vogue, a rival model outed Lauren as transgender in the pages of the supermarket tabloid, National Enquirer. “Vogue Model Used To Be a Man,” read the magazine’s headline. https://issuu.com/thestandardmagazine/docs/thestandard_ vol6_issue9

BROADWAY RINGS
(AND SINGS!) IN THE HOLIDAYS BY SKIP SHEFFIELD
CAST OF ALADDIN
The 20th Anniversary edition of Broadway’s Carols For a Cure is full of spirited holiday favorites sung by stars from leading musicals including Mean Girls, Dear Evan Hansen, Hamilton, My Fair Lady and Pretty Woman. For twenty years, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ holiday CD, Broadway’s Carols for a Cure, has been a staple of every theatrelover’s wish list. The beloved series pairs casts from award-winning Broadway musicals with seasonal songs that are both classic and new. This year’s 2-CD compilation, available now for $25 in the Broadway Cares store, features 28 tracks from the companies of Mean Girls, Dear Evan Hansen, Hamilton, My Fair Lady, Pretty Woman, and more! “This year’s special 20th anniversary edition features eighteen original, newly recorded singles, creatively arranged and performed by the incredibly talented performers and musicians from the 2018 Broadway season, along with ten bonus classics from past year’s albums,” explains producer Lynn Pinto. Once again, she has collaborated with engineer Andros Rodriguez on the album. After twenty years of creating Broadway’s Carols for a Cure, Lynn Pinto has developed a recipe that works. She allows each company a great deal of freedom in choosing the material and the

style of their arrangement. She also works with their demanding Broadway schedules. ”We record the musicians and singers in layers, utilizing isolation booths for a higher quality recording,” she says. “It gives our holiday album a unique sound from most cast albums and allows us to properly showcase these amazing voices and instrumentalists.” The first Broadway’s Carols for a Cure album debuted in 1999. Recorded at St. John’s Church in Greenwich Village, it featured carols from the casts of Cabaret, Fosse, and Swing!, as well as from Chicago and Phantom of the Opera who also appear on the special 20th anniversary edition. Fans of today’s Great White Way will be overjoyed to hear original recordings from other current top productions, too, including the cast of Mean Girls singing an all-new, frolicking version of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and the cast of Head Over Heels performing an original holiday number, “Head Over Holidays.” Additionally, the cast of My Fair Lady presents a sweeping rendition of “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and the cast of Pretty Woman caps off the year in grand style with their beautiful adaptation of “Auld Lang Syne.”

CAST OF FROZEN
Also featured in the special 20th anniversary edition of Broadway’s Carols for a Cure is a stirring tribute of “Over the Rainbow” to Jan Maxwell, the beloved five-time Tony Award nominee who passed away earlier this year. Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is a nonprofit organization that helps individuals with serious illnesses including AIDS receive the health care and support they need. In addition, they provide financial support in the form of grants to AIDS and family service organizations throughout the country.
DEAR EVAN HANSEN - BEN LEVI ROSS
“No town is more festive than New York City for the holidays and no street here is as magical as Broadway! 2018’s Broadway’s Carols for a Cure is sure to be a favorite for all,” promises Lynn Pinto. 2018 Broadway’s Carols for a Cure Volume 20 exclusively benefits Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
The mistletoe is hung… And so are the garlands, the ornaments, window decorations, and lights. You’d be ready for the holidays, too, if you weren’t hung up on a gift for that one certain person. Now what? Now head to the bookstore with this column in-hand, and look for one of these great books…. GENERAL NON-FICTION For the person who can’t get enough of John, Paul, George, or Ringo, “Visualizing the Beatles” by John Pring and Rob Thomas is something they’ll want to hold in their hands. It’s a graphic history of the Fab Four, so lots of pictures, easy to browse, fun to have. For the armchair detective or CSI fan, “The Handy Forensic Science Answer Book” by Patricia Barnes-Svarney and Thomas E. Svarney will be a welcome gift this year. In a Q&A format, this book teaches and answers the kinds of questions any detective-show fan can come up with. It may also chill you…
Wrap it up with any good murder mystery, of course! Or better yet, wrap it up with “Murder, Lies, and Cover-Ups” by David Gardner, a book about conspiracies and the whodunit deaths of celebrities your giftee will surely remember. Consider more with “The Disaster Survival Guide” by Marie D. Jones, a book that’s a good primer for coming out the other side of nature’s worst and mankind’s unthinkable. For the fashionista, you can’t go wrong when you give “Fierce: The History of Leopard Print” by Jo Weldon. Yes, that’s what this book is about – the evolution of a wild fad that shows no signs of slowing down. You know what kind of paper to wrap this book in, don’t you? Wrap it up for the perfect gift for the giftee who mourns the end of summer from October to May: “Hollywood Beach Beauties” by David Wills. It’s a large picture book full of starlets on the beach, circa 1930 into the 1970s. Not just fun for sun lovers, but for fashion followers, too.

BOOK REVIEW
For the person who’s facing That Certain Age in the New Year, wrap up “The Happiness Curve” by Jonathan Rauch. It’s a book about the wonderfulness of turning 50 and how life is so much sweeter. Pair it up with “The End of Old Age” by Marc E. Agronin, M.D., which is about making the latter half of your life the best part. For the political animal in your family, “Hugs from Obama,” edited by M. Sweeney might be just the right gift. It’s filled with pictures and quotations from the Obama years in the White House, including the end. Pair it up with “The Watergate: Inside America’s Most Infamous Address” by Joseph Rodota, for a scandalous look back in history. The giftee who loves to laugh will love having “Laughter Totally Is the Best Medicine” by the Reader’s Digest folks. Filled with jokes, cartoons, and other funnies, it might also make a great stocking-stuffer. And for the cook on your list, “Buttermilk Graffiti” by Edward Lee would make a great gift. It’s part history, part memoir, and part foodie paradise with recipes and it’s yummy. MEMOIR / BIOGRAPHY A highly anticipated (and much-desired) gift to look for is “In Pieces” by Sally Field, a book by the girl America has grown up with. It’s filled with behind-the-story stories and celeb names you’ll also recognize. Wrap it up with a “The Flying Nun” DVD or two, or a copy of “Smokey and the Bandit.” Another celeb biography to try is “Marilyn Monroe: The Private
22 THESTANDARDPS.COM
Life of a Public Icon” by Charles Casillo. It’s for the giftee who only thinks she knows everything about MM that there is to know. HEALTH & MEDICINE For the person who asked for a genealogy test, look for “Because I Come From a Crazy Family” by Edward M. Hallowell, MD, a memoir about inherited afflictions, childhood, and the ways that even a beloved family can be a challenge. DEATH & DYING Loss doesn’t stop during the holidays. If your giftee needs any kind of comfort, try “The After Death Chronicles” by Annie Mattingley. It’s a book filled with stories of everyday people who were surprised to receive communication from “beyond the veil.” PETS AND ANIMALS Who doesn’t love a day at the beach? Your dog lover and the dog they love do, so they’ll want to unwrap “Dogs on the Beach” by Lara Jo Regan. It’s filled with photos of dogs in the surf & sand, enjoying warm weather and taking every advantage of summer there is. LGBTQ INTEREST Who doesn’t like a mystery? Your giftee sure does, and if there are chills inside it, all’s the better so wrap up “Sodom Road Exit” by Amber Dawn. It’s the story of a small but dying village that’s lost its last reason for tourists. Even so, one young woman lives there with her mother because she has nowhere else to go. She wishes she did,
though, because her small hometown holds terror… Wrap it up with “Ruin of Stars” by Linsey Miller, the second book in a fantasy series in which the main character is gender-fluid. For the reader who loves books that may make him think, look for “So Famous and So Gay” by Jeff Solomon. It’s a book about Truman Capote and Gertrude Stein and how their fame still lingers while so many other almost-celebrities barely get a nod today, no matter what they did for LGBTQ rights…. The person on your list who is thinking about transitioning (or who recently has) will love unwrapping “Trans Like Me” by CN Lester, a series of essays on gender diversity, being trans, and how to tackle tacky people whose questions are too nosy. Pair it with “Being Emily” by Rachel Gold, a book about a trans woman, now updated to include new material. For the traveler on your list, the person who also loves history, you can’t go wrong with “Riviera Dreaming” by Maureen Emerson. It’s the true story of an architect and an ex-officer in the British Army, how they teamed up to create a mansion that took society by storm, and who vied to hire these two men to decorate their Riviera mansions. Wrap it up with “Global Gay: How Gay Culture is Changing the World” by Frédéric Martel, for a very well traveled gift. More fiction for the gay reader: “You Can’t Tell By Looking” by Russell J. Sanders, a romance about love between two high school boys, one of whom is also dealing with his anti-gay Islamic family;
and “Aesop Lake” by Sarah Ward, a unique book based on three of Aesop’s Fables to tell a tale of a hate crime and its aftermath. So there you are, a bunch of different ways to certificate for fun, learning, and winter reading Remember: if none of these suggestions seem to fit Someone on your list, ask your weary-but-smiling They’re the ones who have all the right answers.

I would venture to say that most people think of moving when it comes to reinventing their homes. One thing of which I am absolutely sure is, it’s much easier and much less expensive to stay where you are and make your home exactly what you want. When clients approach us with the idea of “trading-up” on their home I always ask “Do you love your neighborhood, community, schools, neighbors? If they answer yes, then I suggest we reconsider the home they now own. Here are a few tips on how to answer that question for yourself… • Do you have equity in your home? If so, you can borrow against that to do all forms of renovations or additions to your existing home. • What about your current home leaves you wanting more? Most clients we see considering a major move have never finished the home they own. Finish what you have started and make changes that you know you want, now. • If you have already established yourself in your community, why move? I have found that most people like the area where they live. They know their neighborhood, grocery stores, favorite cafes and shops, etc. If that is true for you then stay put and get your house right today. • Renovations cost less than new construction and take much less time. The average new construction project is 18 to 24 months from start to finish. In our firm, the average major renovation takes only 6 months! Yes, we have a reputation of speed and quality but, when it comes to new construction, even we cannot make it move faster. There are two major reasons that people buy new homes and it just so happens that they are the reasons those same people say no to buying another home…. kitchens and master bathrooms. Everything else is negotiable. So, when considering renovations to your home, these are areas to focus on for beauty, comfort, style and value. In both cases, the money invested in these areas (may) add to the value of your home. My advice is to do what makes you happy. Unless you are planning a renovation to quickly flip a house, then make your house the home you have always dreamed of. A new kitchen, new bathrooms, a new deck, pool or addition to your home, make choices to make your life better. As I say each month at the end of my column…Live Well! For the new year I am going to add to that sentiment, Live Well, Today! www.foleystinnette.com Designer Dann Facebook / Youtube / Instagram / Twitter / Pinterest

PSP FOCUS CVREP TO PRESENT WHITE BY JAMES IJAMES The Coachella Valley Repertory (CVRep), now celebrating its ten-year anniversary, has announced they will offer White by James ljames as the second production of their 2018/19 season. Set to open at the Atrium in Rancho Mirage on January 23 and run through February 17, 2019, White is a funny, 90-minute play that draws on both life and art to examine issues of racism, sexism, gender and identity - a perfect fit for CVRep’s 2018/19 seasonal theme of “a handful of isms.” In White, gay white male artist, Gus, cranks out canvas after canvas of white-on-white paintings. He lectures at a college, receives fellowships, and lives with his boyfriend, Tanner, who is of Asian descent. Although Gus has achieved comfortable success he is, by no means, famous. When Gus learns that his best friend Jane has become senior curator at the illustrious Parnell Museum, he implores her to put him in their “New America” exhibition. Unfortunately, Jane tells him that the “New America” only wants female ethnic voices, and that there’s no room for white guys. So, Gus hires Vanessa, a local African American actress, to invent a fictional artist named Balkonaé Townsend, a brash and political artist to claim his art, while also fitting the museum’s desire for “new voices”. Gus and Vanessa construct a quick, humorous backstory for her and everything is going smoothly until Balkonaé takes over and Gus has to deal with the mess he’s made. Asked about his selection of this project for CVRep’s 20182019 Season of “isms,” Artistic Director Ron Celona, who will direct, says, “This play really has it all, and with the current heightened atmosphere in our country, couldn’t be more timely and relevant; it deals with issues of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference and affirmative action, and does so with ironic humor. We’re very much looking forward to presenting it to our audiences. It will give the Coachella Valley the opportunity to see and hear a young, upcoming playwright’s* perspective.” Four LA-based actors are set to appear in WHITE: Paul David Story, Charlotte Munson, Franceli Chapman-Varela and Anthony Saludares.
by feminism, by contemporary culture, and by white women.” – Philadelphia Inquirer “White is pure gold… It’s bold, outlandish, insightful, and exciting…a sharp deconstruction of racial, ethnic, gender and social stereotypes, examined from multiple points of view. It’s a comedy, but its message is serious. It’s bold, outlandish, insightful, and as exciting a play as you’re likely to see this year.”- DC Metro Theater Arts
“White bursts with humor…the best of which come at the expense of the institutionalization of art…The ending adds a surreal twist, driving home Ijames’ exploration of black women’s exploitation

GOING TO THE DOCTOR’S BY LEE LYNCH
“Visiting the doctor doesn’t have to be all gloom and doom,” said my sweetheart. “We can make it fun.” Remember the all-powerful; usually white male doctors of childhood? From the waiting room you could hear kids scream. Vaccines were terrifying. You had to undress. Sometimes my mother would take me for a milkshake afterward, yet, to this day; my blood pressure is higher (and I always weigh more) in the examining room. I was seeing a hand surgeon for a left thumb brace to balance the one I wear on the right. I have Eaton stage III thumb CMC arthritis bilaterally, etc., blah, blah, blah, blah. Which means arthritis with a capital “A.” As with most things in our rural area, the surgeon is located a bit over an hour from our home, but, oh, the hills and valleys we pass! Someday, we agreed, we would explore them. It’s hard to pry us from our cozy nest on weekends, but until my sweetheart is hired for a so-far elusive new job, she’s free. A lightbulb went on for her: why
34 THESTANDARDPS.COM
not explore those hills and valleys on the way to the doctor’s? It was a fine autumn day. We stopped for breakfast sandwiches and took off for our excellent gay adventure. My sweetheart loves the historical markers and I love the old west architecture. Old, that is, in terms of the West, where the Native Americans were able to retain their lands a while longer than they did farther east. As we drove, we came across a sign for a town with a covered bridge. It wasn’t exactly a town—Wren is too small for an official population count. The 1929 Harris Covered Bridge was a spanking clean white and spanned Mary’s River, which at that point is a lively stream. We’ve happened upon a bunch of covered bridges on our expeditions along Oregon’s Coastal Range. The bridge led to tidy farmland and a long hill where two black cows roamed. The proud settlement of Wren has a Community Hall and a few family businesses, including an organic quince farm that sells its jellies worldwide. There were five small wineries.
We hadn’t planned to explore a covered bridge, or sweet little Wren, and then we happened on Beazell Memorial Forest. A husband in his wife’s honor donated the 586 acres to the county. On site was a pioneer home, the Plunkett House, built in what was called the Revival Gothic Vernacular style. It was a small t-shaped place. Two adults and seven, nine, twelve, children were somehow crammed inside homes like it, miniscule compared to today’s private homes. The doctor a distant menace for now, we wandered toward the trails of the temperate rainforest, so termed because of the abundant rain that falls on this north-facing site. We heard a Pileated woodpecker thunking at a tree somewhere out of sight and picked up a few acorns for our chipmunks and golden mantle squirrels back home. We poked around an enormous renovated barn. The trail offers four loops through big-leaf maples and a dense Douglas-fir plantation. No one was around except for one hurried birdwatcher. We’ll be going back to catch sight of that big old woodpecker. Up the road a piece, past yards filled with rusty cars, weathered travel trailers permanently up on blocks, and stacks of treadless tires, we entered the site of U.S. Army Fort Hoskins with its extensive interpretive trails. Who knew, hidden not far from the highway, was an important archeological site listed (like The Stonewall Inn) on the National Register of Historic Places. Though it’s always intriguing to step into history, why did the plaque indicate that 600 soldiers were stationed there to protect Native Americans? I read the words twice to confirm them. When I got home and researched the fort, though, its purpose was not to protect, but to monitor the Coastal Indian Reservation—something like a large internment camp for many tribes driven from their lands. And we, offspring of the colonists, are still rewriting history. We peered in the windows of the timber frame Commandant’s house/Infirmary and surveyed what had been the parade ground. We admired the flight of two mewling Osprey way overhead. We walked a trail past a weedy meadow and up into pinewoods. The foundation of an old schoolhouse surprised us, the base of its red brick chimney intact. There was no one around except two county employees. Hi, fellas, just a couple of woman lovers doing that mysterious thing lesbians do—visiting backcountry surprises. As usual, we took a wrong turn—all part of the adventure. We were blithely cruising along, enjoying the pastoral scenery: unusually vibrant autumn leaves, grayed tumbledown farm buildings, and pristine farm houses, when a sign appeared: “Paved Road Ends.” Whoops. Eyes on the clock now, we u-turned, retraced our route and made for the doctor’s. There was no screaming, not a needle in sight, I kept my clothes on, and the surgeon is a woman. On the way home, with my new brace fitted, yes, we stopped for a milkshake.

WELLNESS
NUTRITION A KEY TO EMOTIONAL & PHYSICAL HEALTH BY JILL LANGHAM
Well it’s that time again. Another year is coming to a close and time continues to fly by. Why was it that when I was in History or Math class back in the day, that time felt like it stood still? It no longer feels or appears that way and this year is absolutely no different! It’s almost been a year since I published my first book. And, it’s almost 2 years since the person in the White House took office. (I sure hope these next 2 years fly by even more quickly!)
Community. I now experience the full range of emotions and the depth of those emotions unencumbered by depression feel very different. I experienced grief and loss as raw emotions and I was literally unable to dance and for one who refers to herself as the “Dancing Queen”, it was a very powerful experience.
But, looking back I’d have to say that it has been a year filled with lots of personal growth. I recently lost 6 close friends and it affected me greatly. Not, that those past losses of other friends were any less meaningful, but rather, it was the timing of these recent deaths that affected my heart so deeply.
Even my Eating Disorder reared its ugly head and that really got my attention. I had shared with you that I followed the Intermittent Fasting Program only to realize that it’s not for me, my metabolism or body type. Sixty days after starting it and following it for six weeks, I have more fat on my body, less muscle and more sagging skin then ever before. My hormones are out of balance, my skin has broken out and my motivation for working out is waxing and waning.
I have openly acknowledged my relationship with depression over the first 49 years of my life until I found my place in the Gay
I have monitored my hormone levels through blood tests, every 3 months over the last 18 years. This has allowed me to compare my
36 THESTANDARDPS.COM
results against my food, exercise and activity levels. My IGF-1 levels are at their second lowest, which, I believe has been contributing to many of the symptoms listed above. In 2000, my levels were unusually low at 80ng/ml. I began taking Growth Hormone (GH) injections while competing and my IGF-1 levels shot up to over 400ng/ml. They leveled off to the top of the range and stayed at 229ng/ml for over four years even though I had stopped taking GH after18 months! I liken it to the fact that I was finally living my life for the first time and was growing. But, I think that the loss of so many friends in such extreme ways like Cancer, Suicides, Car Accidents and a possible Murder really hit me on a cellular level and affected my hormone production. I have gone back to my original Eating Plan of eating Protein, Carbohydrates and Fats six times a day and have again begun a regime of GH Shots. Dietary protein intake, especially animal protein assists in regulating circulating IGF-1 levels. This is due in part to the fact that animal protein has high levels of essential amino acids, whereas plant protein, does not, something to consider if you are only using plant protein. Also, high glycemic, refined carbohydrates can also raise IGF-1 levels. Adequate IGF-1 levels are necessary
for maintenance of bone mass, muscle mass and brain functions at later ages, which is where I am in my life now. When my levels were at 80ng/ml at age 44, they were equivalent to what you would expect of someone 80+ years old! Shocking, wouldn’t you say? Dr. Joel Fuhrman talks more about this on his website at drfurhman.com Again, this is something else to consider if you following a KetoDiet or a low to no-carbohydrate plan. If you haven’t had your IGF-1 or Insulin-like Growth Factor levels drawn, you may want to ask your Doctor to order it. So, off we go into 2019. I wish you all a very happy, healthy, prosperous Holiday Season and New Year. I hope that you will all take good care of yourselves, be good to yourself and those around you. Hug one another instead of kissing each other on the mouth to avoid passing the flu bug or in our community gonorrhea, chlamydia or some other S.T.I.’s (I know that sounds harsh and rude, but I have some friends who have contracted these from something as innocent as a Kiss) All my Best, XOXO Jill, Your Dancing Queen

LONG-TERM HIV SURVIVORS REASSURE OTHERS: ‘YOU ARE NEVER ALONE’ BY COLE HARPER
In 1990, after Michelle Lopez left a domestic violence situation, she and her infant daughter were homeless and were both diagnosed with HIV. “If I had not found community, I truly believe I would have been dead,” remarks Michelle. Today, Michelle, a 51-year-old mother and grandmother, reminds people “You’re not alone, you’re never going to be alone.”
to reinvigorate the dialogue around HIV and shift the conversation toward a focus on long-term healthier living - regardless of a patient’s age at the time of diagnosis. A large part of the Coalition’s mission is dedicated to reducing stigma and helping older adults living with HIV find communities and networks of support as they navigate the challenges of living with the condition.
While HIV can now be a long-term, manageable chronic disease for many, aging with HIV can present a unique set of challenges. Stigma is among the foremost barriers to HIV treatment, care and support. It’s common for older adults living with HIV to feel lonely and isolated. That’s why the HIV: The Long View Coalition is helping
Ed Shaw says finding community support and reaching out to people who could help him better understand his diagnosis was so important in learning to live with HIV. Ed felt ashamed and embarrassed when he was first diagnosed; however, after talking with a healthcare provider and learning more about his condition,
38 THESTANDARDPS.COM
Ed began to feel comfortable enough to seek treatment. “The more I came to understand about HIV,” Ed says, “the less afraid I became.” Today, Ed mentors individuals living with HIV and helps connect them to resources and organizations like the ones that helped him more than two decades ago. Kim Watson, a woman of trans experience, is also sharing her story of learning to live with HIV to help others feel comfortable talking about the condition. When Kim was in her 20s, she wished that she had someone to guide and mentor her through the challenges of living with HIV. Today, Kim takes pride in being that resource for a younger generation. “It’s so important for people impacted by HIV to feel supported,” Kim says. “And the best way to find that support is to confide in loved ones and to go out and explore your treatment options with a healthcare provider.” Today, individuals with HIV are living longer, healthier lives than ever before. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are 1.1 million adults and adolescents living with HIV in the United States. People aged 50 and over account for an estimated 47 percent of Americans living with diagnosed HIV. As a result of this demographic shift, the community has arrived at a crossroads. It’s a time of tremendous opportunity to envision the future and develop innovative solutions that can help improve the long-term outlook for those living with HIV. The HIV: The Long View Coalition is helping people living with HIV address some of those challenges. Established in 2016 in collaboration with Gilead Sciences, the Coalition is a forward-looking health initiative working to drive discussion and action on the longterm needs of people living with and at-risk for HIV. The Coalition is comprised of a diverse group of partner organizations that support some of the communities most heavily impacted by the HIV epidemic today. The Coalition is working to reignite the conversation around aging, long-term health and HIV. Earlier this summer, the Long View Coalition released its Never Alone video series. The videos feature the inspiring stories of three
long-term HIV survivors, each of whom shares their experiences of overcoming stigma and aging happily and healthfully while living with HIV. While Ed, Michelle and Kim each have their own unique stories to tell, they share many common experiences and have confronted many of the same challenges. From overcoming stigma, to feeling comfortable speaking with a healthcare provider, to talking openly with loved ones, there is a lot that those living with HIV should think about. Here are some of the most important things that Ed, Michelle and Kim have learned: * Life doesn’t stop with HIV: More people are living longer - and aging healthier - with HIV than ever before. With proper medical care and a healthy lifestyle, those impacted by HIV are able to continue living their lives and doing what they love. As Michelle puts it, “HIV is just a diagnosis.” * Community is always there: When anyone first hears the words, “You are HIV positive,” it’s easy to feel like no one else could possibly understand. Fortunately, that’s just not true. Whether you have a question about living with HIV, or you’re looking for additional resources, or just want to talk to someone who knows how you feel, there is a welcoming HIV community for whenever you need it. You are never alone. * Paying it forward: If there is one thing that Ed, Michelle and Kim each emphasize again and again, it’s how thankful they are for the support they’ve received and their desire to pay it forward however they can. They each work with community advocacy organizations throughout the city to help prevent HIV, as well as mentor young people who are learning how to live with HIV. “I consider myself fortunate to be a long-term HIV survivor,” Ed says. “It’s up to people like me to pass on the knowledge and support that we’ve been given.” To learn more about the Never Alone video series, and to hear from Ed, Michelle and Kim directly, visit http://hivthelongview.com/neveralone/.

TRAVEL
PET-FRIENDLY PREPARATIONS FOR YOUR HOLIDAY TRAVELS On your most challenging days you can always count on your pet to greet you at the door when you come home or cuddle up in your lap in the evening. They are a vital part of your home life all year long, but when your life takes you away from home - as it often does during holiday travel - are you thinking of them before you head out the door? With so much to pack and prepare for your trip, it’s easy to forget about those you’ll leave behind, like your pets. That’s why if you’re planning to leave for a day or longer, you should make sure to employ these tips to make sure your pet is happy and safe while you’re away for the holidays. * Find a quality pet sitter. Dogs need to be walked and let out during the day, so when you’re gone, you’ll need a pet sitter to fill these duties. Finding a quality, reliable pet sitter can be the difference between a happy pet and damage to your home when you return. Try to trade sits with a fellow pet owner, and if that’s not possible, the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters is a nonprofit organization with resources to help you find the best pet sitter for you. * Be mindful of the temperature. Knowing the temperature patterns in your destination city plays a big role in how you pack, but have you looked at what the weather has in store for your home while you’re gone? Allowing your home to get overly hot while you’re away isn’t good for your pet. You can control the temperature in your home - even while you’re away - with a WIFI controlled thermostat like the Coleman Echelon HX Touch-screen thermostat to name one. WIFI-enabled smart thermostats provide more than just comfort, it monitors the temperature in your home, allowing you to always be aware of your home’s temperature. And best of all, it’s completely controllable from your smartphone, so even if you forget to make adjustments before you go, resetting the temperature in your home is just a click away. * A little TV time. If commotion is the name of the game in your home, a house that is suddenly too quiet could have a negative impact on your pet. To alleviate this concern, leave the television
on in one of the rooms so your pet can enjoy a little noise in the background. Just make sure you choose a room that is different from where your pet often sleeps so they can comfortably avoid the sound if they want to. * Leave a little bit of yourself. Is it possible to be in two places at once? In some ways yes. Leaving items out that smell like you laundry or blankets, for example - can be a wonderful source of comfort in instances when your pet is feeling stressed. Just remember that if your pet likes to chew, these items could be their first target, so only leave things you’re comfortable losing. Having a pet doesn’t mean you need to put your holiday travel plans on hold, it just adds another layer to your planning process. Apply the tips above, and you and your pet will be happy and comfortable until the trip is over and you’re reunited.

TRANSCENDENCE
YEAR IN MY REAR (VIEW) CONTENT WARNING: (SELF-HARM) BY CHRISTINA VRONAY RUGGLES
Time Passed, a reflection I’m writing this for December, coming off the Thanksgiving high, the high of food comas, and having the privilege to be included in a family who loves me and supports me. A family with who I can spend the holidays with, who I can have petty squabbles with, because they don’t hate me for who I am and who I love. I’m lucky like that. I’m lucky in a lot of ways. I think a huge way in which I’m lucky is that I have this opportunity to tell my story to (hopefully!) interested readers. That this outlet exists for others and me is amazing, and something I’m thankful for. I’m thankful for many things though, for my aforementioned family, for my loving partner, for this opportunity, for my grandparents as they help send me to university, for the spark of courage inside me that demanded I live as a woman. I could go on. I won’t bore either of us. I have a lot to be thankful for this past year. I hope that you, and those who you hold close, have much to be thankful for. The Great In-between Last month, I was very grave and ominous about the future of my transition. Despite finding a support group that worked. Despite making friends, despite starting to build a network, despite it all, it was about to go wrong. Not in an awful way. Just in a “universe is going to kick me in the ovaries, wait, darn, the universe didn’t give me those either!” sort of way. In a privileged sort of way. For the past few months my Father, Step-mom, and myself had been scoping out apartments for me, rather casually on my end, truth be told. They ended up finding one, promising to help pay a majority of the rent as long as I signed up for school in the eventual fall session, and continued to have a job. A sweetheart deal. Most kids couldn’t beg that deal out of their parents. The other edge of this double-edged sword was two-faced: One was that I was moving into a very bro-culture household. Very young man, very masculine, very much a testosterone fueled rampage of a home. Mostly a single mother and my sister raised
42 THESTANDARDPS.COM
me. My father and stepmother are far closer to computer nerds, than anything resembling “jocks”. This was very much an alien environment. One I immediately perceived as toxic to the fact I was a woman. The second glaring issue was that, in the move, all of my “stuff” vanished. My sweater, my shirt, my wig, my bra, my socks, my everything. Losing that was the final straw that broke me. That broke any desire to attempt transition. Those two occurrences awoke something inside me, and I pushed every bit of Christina down into a multitude of dark pits. Mile wide, pitch-black pores in my psyche were stuffed to the gills with my desperate need to live as the woman I was. Not this man-child mockery I constructed to fit in. Christina never left me. I could never banish my true self. She would manifest every 6 months or so. She would dance in my waking mind, a herald of panic attacks, rampant sobbing, depression, self-
loathing, and above all a strong desire to mutilate my body. To cut it down to size. To shave the masculinity out of my jaw. To insert something, anything, into my chest to give the illusion of breasts. To hack off and shorten my ridiculous feet. To skin off however many layers of skin were needed for body hair to join their degloved dermatological brethren. To hack off my genitals and form something new. Something better. Every 6 months she came out of me, wailing and thrashing against the walls of the prison I put her in. Every 6 months, I would push her back into whatever corner she had come from. Each time they lasted longer. First a day or two. The last one I had before I began re-transitioning, was a week and a half. In Between For clarity’s sake, I was moved out of my parent’s house spring 2014. I didn’t begin transitioning, properly until early February 2017. A lot happened in those years. One of those things was that I became entwined with a frankly amazing woman, who I mistreated and undervalued every step of the way. What kept us so… entwined was how much the relationship was built on me being her man. Even if I said funny things like “I wanna wear your dresses”, “I want to tattoo
a feminine eye on my body, to show that there’s always a woman inside me, looking out” or the ever-classic: “I’m a woman trapped in a man’s body, oh god honey I want to cut my face off, what’s wrong with me”. Normal cisgender things ya’ know? What caused me to break us up, and eventually free me to come to the realization (again) that I was a woman and needed to transition, was that I wasn’t happy. I remember the night I first thought the thought that ended us. After a huge fight, in which she (very correctly) accused me of not paying enough attention to her, she demanded I have an answer to “why” in the morning. I’d love to say I spent all night thinking about it, but in fact, once she dozed off, and I felt safe conversing with myself, it came to me immediately. I didn’t love her, despite her being painfully smart, eternally hardworking, and mouth-wateringly gorgeous. I just didn’t feel like my life was hopeless with her around. I wanted to wake up most days with her in my life, and that was a relatively fresh sensation. Wasn’t love though. Clearly, this whole man thing wasn’t making the cut. Two weeks after moving out of her place, I transitioned properly. Happy Holidays, beautiful gays!
