FITNESS TRENDS 2018
Fitness trends come and go every year, but we’re going back to the basics in 2018, according to a new annual survey from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) published in its Health & Fitness Journal. For the survey, the authors identified 40 possible fitness trends for 2018 and asked more than 4,000 fitness pros from organizations like the American Council on Exercise and the National Council on Strength and Fitness to rank them on a 10-point scale, with 10 meaning it was most likely to be a trend this year. The ACSM also distinguished the difference between a trend and fad in the survey. A trend was defined as having more lasting power than a fad, which is typically met with more enthusiasm but lasts for a shorter amount of time. With that, here’s what you should know about the 10 fitness trends you’ll see everywhere this year.
instance, you might sprint as hard as you can for 15 to 30 seconds and then walk for 45 to 60 seconds. You’d alternate between the two for a set amount of time. There’s a reason people can’t get enough of it: The workouts are time efficient and effective if you’re looking to fry fat, research suggests. One catch, fitness pros don’t love recommending HIIT to their clients, since it has a higher rate of injury, according to the ACSM.
GROUP TRAINING Fitness classes have been around forever, but they’re making their mark this year. The ACSM defines group training as a workout of five or more people led by an instructor. The possibilities are endless: Boot Camps, boxing, cycling, and rowing would all make the cut. These classes are designed to teach you something new, motivate you, and help you reach your fitness goals, the ACSM says. Sign up for one with a friend, since working out with a buddy can push you to exercise harder and longer.
HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY A high intensity interval training (HIIT) session usually only lasts 30 minutes or less, but requires short bursts of (you guessed it) high intensity exercise followed by a slower-paced recovery period. For

Our obsession with data continues this year. Wearable tech includes activity trackers, smart-watches, heart rate monitors, GPS
tracking devices, and smart eyeglasses, the ACSM says. If you thrive off the numbers, devices like the Apple Watch and Fitbit can enhance your training and help you stick to your goals. This type of technology is advancing rapidly, and what we’ll see from this market in the next decade is a bit unpredictable, the ACSM says.
BODYWEIGHT TRAINING “People have been using their own bodyweight for centuries as a form of resistance training,” the ACSM report states, but bodyweight exercises have only recently been defined as a trend. When you use just your bodyweight, you can work multiple muscles at once and work out wherever and whenever you want. Plus, you have countless moves to choose from, so it will never get boring. These workouts also involve little equipment, making it a great option for those looking to avoid pricey gym memberships.
STRENGTH TRAINING Can we even call this a trend? Classic strength training seems to stand the test of time, the ACSM says, since it has made its way onto the list since they started doing this survey 12 years ago. Everyone should lift weights: You’ll strengthen your bones, fry fat, keep your heart healthy, and build hard muscle.
EDUCATED, CERTIFIED, AND EXPERIENCED FITNESS PROFESSIONALS Music to our ears! In a world of improper form, it’s important to have people who can educate those looking to get fit in a way that’s both safe and effective. Fitness certification programs
continue to grow, says the ACSM, and while standards vary among organizations, getting certified simply means you’re a legit trainer that has studied and passed a test on gym safety, proper exercise form, and training guidelines.
YOGA Because there are so many styles, yoga trends are constantly changing, says the ACSM, which gets people excited. If you want to see better results in the weight room, then you need to work on your mobility, and getting a bit bendy during yoga is a great way to do that. Stretching just feels good, too. Not to mention, yoga can help relieve stress, boosts your mental health, and improves your heart health.

PERSONAL TRAINING Since the ACSM has been publishing its survey, personal training has always been part of the top 10 trends. “Personal trainers will continue to be an important part of the professional staff of health and fitness centers,” the report states. That’s because even one session with a trainer can teach you the correct way to perform staple exercises, like the bench press or deadlift, which is crucial if you want to minimize your risk of injury. Plus, they can help you structure your workout plan; explain how to use equipment, and offer motivation if you need someone to hold you accountable. You also might want to get references before hiring a personal trainer. You want to make sure you and the trainer are the right fit for your goals.
FITNESS PROGRAMS FOR OLDER ADULTS If you want to keep your bones and muscles healthy as you age, staying active is crucial. The ACSM says that the current generation of older adults seems to be more interested in keeping up with their health, so we may see a boom in programs tailored to retired people looking to stay fit this year.
enhance someone’s ability to perform activities of daily living,” the ACSM says. Think of it this way: Lifting groceries, walking up the stairs, and moving furniture around all require muscle. The deadlift, for example, is a functional exercise because you use your entire body—your arms, legs, and core—when you’re picking something up, like a heavy moving box. Functional fitness helps you replicate the movements you perform in daily life, so that way, you’ll feel strong outside of the gym, too. And as always check with your physician before embarking on any exercise routine.
FUNCTIONAL FITNESS “Functional fitness is defined as using strength training to improve balance, coordination, force, power, and endurance to

BREAKING OUT OF THE SPORTS CLOSET BY FRANCO CARMONA
Not so long ago an LGBT kid growing up and who was into sports had very few role models to emulate. Gay athletes were for the most part closeted and in fear of being found out and possibly lose everything they worked so hard to achieve. Then the closet door began to crack. And little by little it opened a bit more and now it seems to be wide open. Athletes now feel no need to keep who they really are from public view. But let us not forget all those who were
brave enough to buck the status quo and pave the way to the current environment where sexuality has nothing to do with athletic ability and who you love does not matter as much as becoming the best athlete you possibly can. Here are just a few athletes (and the list keeps growing day to day) who know their sexuality doesn’t define them, their sport does.
JASON COLLINS NBA player Jason Collins was drafted by the Houston Rockets in 2001 and played twelve seasons before coming out as gay in a Sports Illustrated cover story. He said that he chose to wear the jersey number “98” in honor of Matthew Shepard who was killed in an antigay hate crime in 1998. When Collins played his last season in the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets he become the first publicly gay athlete to play in any of the four major North American pro team sports leagues. His decision to come out was praised by everyone from the NBA commissioner David Stern and his corporate sponsor Nike to the Obamas.
ABBY WAMBACH American retired soccer player, coach, two-time Olympic gold medalist and FIFA Women’s World Cup champion. A six-time winner of the U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year award, Wambach was a regular on the U.S. women’s national soccer team from 2003 to 2015, earning her first cap in 2001. As a forward, she currently stands as the highest all-time goal scorer for the national team and holds the world record for international goals for both female and male soccer players with 184 goals. Wambach was awarded the 2012 FIFA World Player of the Year, becoming the first American woman to win the award in ten years.
TOM DALEY Tom Daley is a British diver who won the 10-metre platform events at the 2009 FINA World Championship at the age of 15 and then again in 2017 at the age of 23. He has also won a number of medals in the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and other diving championships. In 2013, Daley released a YouTube video announcing that he was in a relationship with a man.
JACKIE SILVA In the 1996 summer Olympics, Jackie Silvia won the gold medal for Brazil in the inaugural women’s beach volleyball tournament. But that wasn’t her first Olympics, playing for the national indoor team; she helped take Brazil to their first Olympics in 1980 at the age of 14, and then again in 1984. In 2014, Silva married her partner of ten years, dancer Amália Lima.

ROBBIE ROGERS Robbie Rogers is a now-retired American professional soccer player who played for Leeds United as well as Major League Soccer team Columbus Crew. In 2013, Rogers announced his retirement at the age of 25 and also came out as gay in a post on his personal blog. “I’m a soccer player, I’m Christian, and I’m gay. Those are things that people might say wouldn’t go well together. But my family raised me to be an individual and to stand up for what I believe in,” he wrote.
NICOLA ADAMS Out bisexual boxer Nicola Adams has been a dominant force internationally, winning major competitions for the last five years including gold in the 51kg weight class at the 2012 Olympics. She added a European championship last year and won gold at this European qualifier.
ORLANDO CRUZ Orlando Cruz is a Puerto Rican boxer currently ranked at number 4 among featherweights by the World Boxing Organization. In 2012, he became the first professionally active boxer to come out as gay saying, ”I want to try to be the best role model I can be for kids who might look into boxing as a sport and a professional career. I have and will always be a proud Puerto Rican. I have always been and always will be a proud gay man” BILLIE JEAN KING Billie Jean King is an advocate for gender equality and has long been a pioneer for equality and social justice. In 1973, at age 29, she won the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match against the 55-yearold Bobby Riggs. King was also the founder of the Women’s Tennis Association and the Women’s Sports Foundation. King won the singles title at the inaugural WTA Tour Championships. King often represented the United States in the Federation Cup and the Wightman Cup. She was a member of the victorious United States team in seven Federation Cups and nine Wightman Cups. For three years, King was the United States’ captain in the Federation Cup. Regarded by many in the sport as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, King was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987. MICHAEL SAM Drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the 2014 NFL draft, Michael Sam became the first publicly gay player to ever be drafted into the NFL. His success generated a lot of media attention and even a congratulations from the President at the time Barrack Obama who said Sam, the Rams and The NFL were “taking an important step forward in our nation’s journey.” Unfortunately Sam didn’t end up making it through the preseason. No out gay player has played in a regular season NFL game to date, but thanks to Sam, it’s more of a possibility.
IREEN WÜST Ireen Wüst won so many world championships and European championships that Reuters elected her Sportswoman of the World in 2014.Wüst has been one of only a handful of openly gay athletes competing in the last few Olympics, something that brought her even bigger attention than usual in Sochi in 2014 due to Russia’s anti-LGBT laws/state sponsored propaganda. She was the first gay athlete to medal at those games, and ultimately won five medals, making her one of the most decorated athletes of the Russian games.
Let’s hear it for these pioneers and for all who have paved the way, and for all the many more trail blazers not mentioned. Thanks to Outsports for portions of the article.

HOW TO BURN MORE CALORIES DURING A WEIGHTLIFTING WORKOUT BY ADAM SINICKI
When you think of burning calories through a workout, you will probably tend to think primarily of cardiovascular exercise or perhaps HIIT. This means running long distances, or alternating short sprints and jogs to accelerate fat burning. Either way, we don’t tend to think of weightlifting or bodybuilding workouts as being effective for fat loss and calorie burning. That’s because they’re slower paced, don’t increase the heart rate to quite the same degree and generally focus more on the breakdown of muscle and less on the burning of fat stores. But what if you want a ripped and lean physique and you’re not interested in running long distances? There is an answer and it involves training in slightly different ways. The objective is to continue with regular weight lifting but to simultaneously increase your heart rate beyond what it would otherwise have been. Here are some ways you can do this: Upper, Lower Pairs Using upper and lower pairs means super-setting. A superset of course means that you’re going to be alternating between two different exercises, either to target complimentary muscles, or to target opposite muscles. In this unique case however, you are going to be training with supersets in order to target first the upper and then the lower body. So you might perform a set of leg presses, followed by a set of shoulder presses. Here you’ve worked all the leg muscles and then you’re following that up immediately with an exercise that will target the shoulders and the upper chest. Why does this work well? The reason it works because it forces the body to deliver blood and oxygen first to the legs and then to the upper body. This in turn then requires more work from your cardiovascular system, thus causing you to burn more calories in a shorter amount of time. Tip: this should not be used with big compound lifts as that can cause your technique and ability to deteriorate as you tired, potentially leading to injury.
Cardio Acceleration Cardio acceleration involves alternating bouts of weight lifting with bouts of 1-minute long (approx.) cardio. So you might perform some bench presses, jog on the spot for a minute, then perform bench presses again. What this does is to elevate your heart rate every time it starts to lower, such that you are maintaining high levels of exertion throughout the training. This is a brutal way to work out but if you can maintain it, it’s also highly effective at building ripped, lean muscle. This should help you in attaining your fitness goals, particularly if you have hit a plateau. Mixing it up always keeps your body guessing. Remember your doctor usually knows best, so talk to him or her before starting any exercise regimen.

HOW AND WHY YOU SHOULD CREATE A MORNING ROUTINE BY ADAM SINICKI
In his book Tools of Titans, Tim Ferriss collects interviews he conducted with some of the most successful entrepreneurs, athletes and film stars on the web. His objective was to look for similarities and connections in their habits, strategies and philosophies in order to see if he could find useful common ground; the idea being that if we emulate some of those habits, we might get to share in a little of that success. While there are plenty of common strategies that you can take from these overachievers, one of the most consistent things you’ll find across all of them is that they each have a morning routine. They each
14 THESTANDARDPS.COM
have a series of actions that they take every morning without fail and which allows them to ensure they are able to perform at their very best during the day ahead. WHY MORNING ROUTINES ARE GREAT If that isn’t enough testimony for you, then what other reasons are there to consider a morning routine? For one, the morning is a time when we are highly productive. Even if you aren’t a ‘morning person’, being productive at the start of the day has the advantage of letting you operate on a clear mind. You aren’t tired from walking around all day and you aren’t bogged
down with little stresses. You have time to act before you start reacting. If you are able to get up a little before everyone else, then the morning also gives you a time of day that is free from distractions. It’s dark outside, no-one is likely to phone and the streets are empty. On top of all that, the morning is of course a time of day that is likely to dictate how the rest of your day goes. If you can get your morning off to a positive start, then that will hopefully put you in the right frame of mind for a positive afternoon, positive evening and positive night. If you are currently rushing out of bed first thing in the morning, rushing to get things ready and then storming out the door while
pulling on your other shoe, chances are that you aren’t going to begin the day with the right mindset! HOW TO ADOPT A MORNING ROUTINE If you plan on creating a useful morning, then you probably will need to wake up a little earlier than you currently are. The objective here is to give yourself the time and space to actually do something with your morning and not rush. If you’re a parent, then try to wake up before the kids’ alarms go off. If you are a young professional, then try to wake up a good hour at least before you need to leave for work.

FEATURE
This is the part that a lot of us struggle with. If you’re tired in the morning and you struggle to get going, then knowing you have a morning routine isn’t going to magically give you the energy to leap out of bed. What can help a great deal though, is to make sure you go to bed at the right time and to consider using a daylight lamp. This is an alarm that will wake you up by gradually getting brighter in the morning to simulate the effect of a sunrise. This is great because it will gently stir you out of sleep rather than jolting you awake. What’s more, is that it will encourage the production of cortisol and nitric oxide as the wavelength is similar enough to that of the sun to trick our biological clock. Another tip is to make the first part of your routine something that you can do in bed. The mistake a lot of people make is to try and leap out of bed in the morning in order to get their day started. This takes a tremendous amount of willpower and that’s a problem seeing as most of us have lower willpower first thing in the morning. But if all you need to do is sit up in the morning and read the morning newspaper, then you should find that this is a much smaller step that is easier to take. This way you can take more incremental steps toward waking up and thereby edge yourself into ‘awake mode’. After you’ve been sat up for 10 minutes, getting out of bed becomes much easier! TYPICAL THINGS TO INCLUDE IN YOUR ROUTINE It’s up to you what you want to put in your morning routine, but if you hope to emulate the greats, here are some good options: MEDITATION: Many people choose to start their day with meditation and practicing meditation at some point during the day
16 THESTANDARDPS.COM
is perhaps the second most common trait among entrepreneurs and highly effective individuals. Meditation is nothing mystical, it simply means that you are training the brain to be more focused. For many people, that means trying to keep the mind clear of wandering thoughts and to keep it ‘still’. You can do this, or you can follow a guided meditation using an app like Headspace. Either way, meditating helps you to better handle stress during the day ahead and it has been shown in countless studies to increase grey matter and boost IQ scores (study). EXERCISE: We all know how beneficial exercise is for both the body and mind, so why not adopt it into your routine and make sure you don’t forget by training first thing in the morning? This can mean a gym workout, a home workout, a run or just a bit of light yoga. Either way, you’ll benefit from having more energy during the day ahead as you wake up your circulation and get everything going. One note though: try not to start exercising within the first 10 minutes of waking up. At this point your spine is softer and you might risk injury. READING THE NEWS: Reading the news or watching it on TV is a useful way to stay up-to-date with current events, which in turn is an important way to ensure you are fully informed with what’s going on in the world. Many people like to add this as part of their routine for that reason. WALK: If you’re not up for a full workout, then going for a morning work can give you a chance to think, to get some vitamin D and to get some basic exercise as well that will burn calories and improve your resting heart rate.
COLD SHOWER: If you are made of tough stuff, then a cold shower will improve your circulation, boost testosterone production and wake you right up! JOURNALING: You can journal about things you did the day before to keep a record of your life, or you can write other things down. Many people recommend practicing gratitude, which essentially means writing things down that you are grateful for in your life. Practicing gratitude simply means remembering to be appreciative for those things, which can make you much happier and more content.
FINAL WORDS Don’t worry if this doesn’t all come naturally to you right away, or if you find you struggle to stick to your new morning routine. This is something that will come with time as you tweak and alter the regime to suit your current responsibilities. Once you find the right rhythm though, this will be a great way to get every day off to the best possible start. And as always check with your physician before embarking on any exercise routine.

INDESIGN TIME TO EXERCISE SOME SUMMER STYLE BY DANN FOLEY
Summer is here. Sunshine, outdoor activities, fresh air exercise… we all love it! You’ve spent the last month or more getting your body ready for summer bathing suit season, so why not do the same for your home? Doesn’t your living space deserve a summer makeover too? Makeovers don’t have to be drastic. You don’t have to throw out everything and start over. A switch from winter season to summer season can be simple, even painless if you know where to focus your efforts. The right adjustments inside your home can change your perspective just as the coming of summer can change your outlook. I have written thousands of words on the subject of outdoor entertaining and decorating. I can literally go on for hours on the subject. But, for the sake of this issue of The Standard Magazine, I want to focus on getting your interior ready for summer. Lighter, brighter, fresher: all terms that come to mind when planning a summer home for one of our clients. We want things to be easier, less complicated, we want to relax and kick our feet up more in our time off and with friends and family. This approach which we take when designing a home specifically for summer fun can be applied to temporary changes in your home right now for this summer. And just planning a home from scratch, it takes a plan and
18 THESTANDARDPS.COM
some good sources to get the look and feeling you are craving to match your summer lifestyle fantasies. Lets begin with the easy things that won’t cost you any money. These are the things you can do yourself today to clean and edit your winter home for your summer home. I have also added some of my favorite sources for your summer style upgrades. Take a look at my “summer-izing” list that I use on my own home. • Gather up (and store away) the cold weather throws and heavy weight fabric pillows in both the living room and the bedroom. Lighten up! • Change your bedding from heavier weight and richer color to lighter cottons and linens. I love it all white for summer. www. cozyearth.com has the best, softest all white bedding around. They only sell white! • If you have an all weather duvet like mine, you can simply remove the comforter and use the duvet as a coverlet. • Fresh flowers are a staple in my home year round but in summer I like to make them easier as well. This is the time of year I bring in potted tabletop flowering plants as well. • Your front door is another place to welcome summer. Sweep, clean and paint the front door if it needs a touchup. A new doormat
may be in order as well. My favorite mats come from www. personalizeddoormats.com • Time to freshen up the scent too. Put all the heavier scented candles and diffusers away. Trade them for light scents from nature. My two favorite brands are www.articafarmacista.com (Prosecco is a go-to of mine) and www.nestfragrances.com (try the Bamboo scent, is another favorite.). These make terrific house party gifts as well! • Clear the clutter. I like to put away many of my accessories on tabletops and surfaces during summer. With open doors and windows there will be more dust and I don’t want to have to deal with that on top of all the “stuff”. Also, when those treasured items come back out in the fall, it’s like Christmas as I get to be thrilled once again and experience each item almost like it is the first time. It is truly one of those win-win situations. Summertime decorating and décor is about simplifying. Summer is for easy living, a casual lifestyle and a relaxed atmosphere. Creating this feeling at home can stem from these easy and inexpensive ideas for better living. I tell all of my clients, “I am here to show you how to live better, today.” I cannot think of a better way to embrace that thought than through finding your summer style at home. Being creative, finding your own style and then asking you to switch up for the season may sound daunting, in fact, I know better than most just how frightening that can be to most of you. The simplest advice I can offer you regarding summer decorating happens to be the same advice I offer my clients for every season and every décor…be easy on yourself, feel more and think less. Gravitate to the things that make you happy, not what you think you are supposed to have or do. This isn’t brain surgery, it is decorating, relax, you really cannot get it wrong, as long as you approach it from a place of honesty and truth in who you are and what you want and how you want to live. Live Well!

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER Wash your hands thoroughly. That’s good advice, no matter where you are. At the risk of sounding germophobic, you never know what lurked on that which you just touched. Stay healthy, keep clean, be tidy, and wash your hands because, as you’ll see in the new book “The Trauma Cleaner” by Sarah Krasnostein, messy life, messy house. The woman didn’t seem very old, but it was really hard to tell. She wouldn’t let anyone past her screen door – as if the stench wasn’t enough to keep most people away. Hoarder situations like that, suicides, undiscovered deaths, and accidents are business-as-usual for Sandra Pankhurst, 60-something owner of Specialized Trauma Cleaning (STC) in Australia. But as author Sarah Krasnostein learned when she befriended her, Pankhurst extends to those clients compassion, and nothing less. There was ample reason for that. Although many of the questions Krasnostein asked Pankhurst were waved away with claims of disremembering, it’s true that Pankhurst was born a boy, raised as a boy, became a man, married a woman, and fathered two sons. But “Peter,” as Krasnostein pseudonymously calls Pankhurst then, was hiding a part of himself so, soon after his youngest son’s birth, he left his family to live as a woman. Though “her reality is as conflicted as it is real,” Pankhurst told Krasnostein tales of being a sex-worker and a madam. Dates and locales may’ve been incorrect and names forgotten, but it’s also true that Pankhurst eventually fully transitioned, and continued to work in the sex industry until she was raped and almost lost her life. She fell in love, fell out of love, fell in love again, married an older man, and divorced. It was because of her ex that Pankhurst founded STC. “As a boss,” says Krasnostein, “Sandra is, variously, mother hen… bad cop… and hanging judge.” Her business cleans up sites affected by hoarding and death, and she’s matter-of-fact about bugs, vermin, and smells as her staff hauls away pathogen-soaked furniture while ensuring that next-of-kin are treated with kindness. Says Pankhurst, “None of us know what tomorrow’s got in store.” As enjoyable as this unique tale is, there are a few things you’ll need to know before you sweep through “The Trauma Cleaner.” First of all, in her get-to-know-you time, author Sarah Krasnostein became close friends with her subject, which is good in most cases. Here, though, Krasnostein uses familiarity to gush about her subject in a way that could make readers wince uncomfortably. She’s also
exceedingly, perhaps needlessly, explicit in details of a sexual nature while largely ignoring big opportunities for enlightenment on the business side of the book. And yet... The goodness – and there’s an industrial-sized dustpan full of it – comes between the lines. This is a biography of cringing, compassion, and somebody’s-got-to-do-it resourcefulness, plus irritations, but with a breezy heft of fabrication built in. It’s so singular that it’s almost irresistible; indeed, if you can get past the gushing and the gruesome, “The Trauma Cleaner” is a book you shouldn’t wait to get your hands on. “The Trauma Cleaner: One Woman’s Extraordinary Life in the Business of Death, Decay, and Disaster” by Sarah Krasnostein c.2018, St. Martin’s Press $26.99 / $34.99 Canada 291 pages

A POEM AND A PLANT BY LEE LYNCH
The day was typical for the Pacific Northwest. The brightening sky had stopped sputtering its fine dewdrops for the moment, the wind had blown itself out, and the development where I live came to life. People took advantage of the disappearing dreariness to walk their dogs, scurry to our centrally located mailboxes, or meet their step goals. I dropped off a copy of New York Magazine in the common room. The cover quoted Melissa Shusterman, who’s running for the Pennsylvania state legislature. “My 16-year-old turned to me after the election and he said, ‘America doesn’t want a smart, qualified woman in office.’ By Friday, I was running.” A neighbor was bending over the magazine table. “New York!” he said when I lay it down. “Perfect!” He read the quote and turned to me, asking if I’d read a book called The Alphabet vs. The Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image. He explained in a rush that the late author and surgeon Leonard Shlaine demonstrated how brain science discoveries of left- and right-brain functions and

studies of the development of images in the form of words, overcame the intuitive Divine Principal in Feminine consciousness and that was how men were able to take power from women. Of course, I told him about the work of the late Mary Daly in her brilliant book Gyn/Ecology: The Metaethics of Radical Feminism, where she does her own exploration of the synthesis of theology, mythology, philosophy, history, and medicine I’d never spoken with this particular neighbor before, a straight man who always wears an Australian bush hat and has a stride like a modified silly walk. Suddenly I’m having a brief discussion of Goddess religions, radical feminist analysis of language, and the inevitable parting words, have a nice day. As I said, the day was typical for the Pacific Northwest. The evening before, my author friend, aka the handy dyke, and I had dinner with a local non-gay feminist woman who is an attorney, writer and publisher. The occasion was the visit by two of her friends from London, a lesbian couple of thirty years. Through her work
in the field of fighting the aggressors of women and children, she met Julie Bindel, an extremely accomplished British radical lesbian feminist journalist and author of such works as Straight Expectations and Exiting Prostitution. With Julie was her partner Harriet Wistrich, a civil rights attorney who is such a powerful voice for women she’s fought and succeeded in changing British law. Our time was short but intense. I knew of Julie’s work because in 2008 she reviewed The Butch Cookbook for “The Guardian” newspaper. The cookbook was put together by the handy dyke, her partner the pianist, and me, and was published by the host. It’s a wonder the restaurant is still standing after the confluence of conversations our little pack of rabidly feminist lesbians bounced around the table. Outside the window, commercial fishing boats docked or set off for Alaska and tourists explored the bay front, oblivious to the Divine Principal in Feminine consciousness above them, raging over oysters at the patriarchal world. Back home, walking the neighborhood, I spied a friend weeding in her front yard. She’d started dialysis treatments the week before, yet there she was, on the ground, digging up little green offenders. I stopped to say hello and she said, “Oh! Can you wait a minute? I have something for you.” This was not unusual. She is full of kindness. She helps the sick, the lonely, the needy. She always has something for passing neighbors. This time, it was a poem. She’s a lovely poet and she’d rediscovered a short verse that delighted me in its original use of words. We stood in her garage for a bit, out of the misty rain, leaning against her small red car, she perhaps a bit shaky, and me with my leg pain. We spoke about writing and she said of her writing group, plainly and perfectly, “I really enjoy talking with writers no matter what they write. It’s about our common need to put thoughts on paper and bring to a story to resolution.” I was thrilled to hear the magazine-seeking neighbor refer to matriarchal societies. It was invigorating and comradely to share the lesbian feminist anger and eagerness at that restaurant table the evening before. It was peaceful and gentle and familiar to breathe and watch nature from a friend’s open garage. I walked out to a plant lush with bloom, hefted some dangling white and pink blossoms in my hand and asked what it was. “That’s a Columbine,” said my neighbor. She told me about the wildflower and explained that she was forever cutting it back. “Here,” she said, and took her pointed little shovel and stomped on its edge until she loosened the soil. Fearful that she’d exhaust herself, I went behind, felt around for the roots and lifted the pretty offshoot and its ball of soil in my hands. Amazed at my two days of rich encounters, at the fullness of my life, I hurried the two blocks home, a poem in one hand, and a blue bucket with swaying stems in the other.

TCC PRESENTS THE STONEWALL HUMANITARIAN AWARDS GALA
Transgender Community Coalition (TCC) began as TDoR Palm Springs in 2014 and is a certified 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. In the beginning, its purpose was to raise funds for the first Transgender Day of Remembrance Memorial Cenotaph Statue. Due to the strong demand by the local transgender, intersex, gender non-conforming, fluid, non-binary community we quickly outgrew our name of TDoR Palm Springs and became the largest transgender organization in the Inland Empire serving the needs of the local transgender community. Currently, we all work in compassionate volunteer positions in a wide range of social service, linkage to care, HIV/AIDS and PrEP education, youth, housing, employment and other supportive needs so this community can be empowered and reach their highest potential. On June 28, 2018 we will celebrate one of the most important days in LGBTQ+ civil rights history – the Stonewall Riots of 1969, with the first annual Stonewall Humanitarian Awards Gala. As we approach the 50th anniversary of the LGBTQ+ civil rights

movement we showcase our community’s human rights leadership and accomplishments for both LGBTQ+ youth and adults. We hope to help the most vulnerable group in our LGBT community as Gay and Lesbian leaders and will be creating not only more leadership in the community but showing that the Gay and Lesbian and Bisexual community supports the growth and empowerment of the Transgender, Intersex and Gender Non-Conforming community. Guest speakers and presenters at the event: Comedian, Shann Carr, Katie Ullman from L-Fund, Palm Springs City Council Lisa Middleton, Drag Performer Arial Trampway, Cathedral City Council, International Jazz Musician Jennifer Lietham, and much more. We are excited to have hip-hop violinist, SVET who appeared on America’s Got Talent in 2013. SVET has performed at numerous Pride events and is a brain cancer survivor. He spends much of time speaking on the need to educate the community on cancer and inspires courage through treatment. Two local LGBT youth violinists will be joining SVET in a special performance.
Q&A
SVET RADOSLAVOF “THE HIP HOP VIOLINIST”
SVET an Electro Hip Hop Violinist as seen on America’s Got Talent is one of the most profound and unique acts of today, will be the guest performer at the Stonewall Humanitarian Awards Gala on June 28, 2018. He is globally recognized for his incredible talent to recreate music and songs of today with the violin. In addition to performing across the United States and Eastern Europe, a journey which includes big cities such as, New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and Amsterdam to name a few, Svet has produced and performed with celebrities including, T-pain, Drake, Mims and many more multicultural artists as he is on his way in making a mark in the music industry for generations to come. SVET is a unique and extraordinary act that will headline this month’s Stonewall Humanitarian Awards Gala; which recognizes the accomplishments of the LGBT Community. The Standard Magazine had the great pleasure to sit down with this prolific musician and got insight to his unique music style.
Thanks for taking time from your busy schedule to talk to our readers. For those who are not familiar with Svet, can you please give thema bit of a background? I was born in Eastern Europe, in a small country named Bulgaria. Growing up I was always fascinated with the arts and music. At the age of 3, I picked up the violin and I never stopped playing. I came to America at the age of 11 and was granted a full scholarship to The Eastman School of Music. Being a teenager in the U.S., I really got into Hip Hop music and culture, eventually transitioned into being a Hip Hop Violinist. For me it was fun and for others it was mesmerizing.
JUNE 2018 29
Q&A As my career was growing, I landed an audition with the biggest talent show on the planet, Americas Got Talent. Once I auditioned people really loved me and I went to Vegas where my duration with the show ended. At that point the sky was the limit and I started to travel all over the country and the world to perform a front of all kinds of crowds. It is so interesting when you think you’re on top of the world, things can change in a blink of an eye and that is the lesson I learned, as well as one of the biggest obstacles in my life after Americas Got Talent. I was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2016; I endured a 4-hour brain surgery, did chemotherapy and radiation on the brain. Although I lost all of my hair, I never lost the spirit and never stopped preforming. I remember getting treated in the morning with a pretty heavy dose of radiation and in the afternoon I would fly out to different city to go play for a charity event. I feel that I am music and music is me! Also being a front of people, sharing my story, my craft and my talent is the most special gift for me. When did you realize that music was going to be something that would be such a huge part of your life? I think after I was on the big stage in AGT and 3000 people in the Fox Theater in St. Louis were screaming my name “Svet, Svet, Svet”, was the moment I realized that this was what I was meant to do. Also when undergoing cancer treatment I had so much support from family, friends and fans That next day after surgery, I went outside of the hospital and played “Let it be” by the Beatles for all my incredible fans to show them that they’re thoughts and prayers were felt. That was a turning point for me as I realized my mission in life is to inspire people. You have an inspiring story as a cancer survivor, how did you initially deal with that diagnosis and what was your healing process? Its not easy going into the doctor’s office being told that you have Brain cancer and it could potentially be fatal. However I was raised by a mother, who with two kids and 11 cents in her pocket came to the greatest country in the world, got a world class education, learned to speak 5 different languages, earned 2 master degrees and raised two sons who went onto universities and got their own degrees as well. I was born to be a fighter and there wasn’t a moment where I was scared going through treatment. Quite the opposite, I embraced it and told my self that I will get my self through that and be better than I am. The power of the mind is an incredible thing and I always set
30 THESTANDARDPS.COM
goals for my self, both short term and long term. I live with out regrets and always try to pull the positive out of a negative situation. After finishing treatment, I lost quite a bit of weight from 155lb to 125lb in a few months after chemo and radiation, but a year later, after changing the way I ate, what I ate and what time I ate, exercising regularly and most of all thinking positive, I got back to full weight and got my great looking hair back :) I remember seeing you on America’s Got Talent and thought, this is really cool. Hip-hop and the violin, which is an instrument that is normally paired with classical music; what made you combine them together? (Works really well BTW) Hip Hop to me is more than just music. It is a way of life, it is the swag, the glamour, being center of attention. I think learning the craft of Hip Hop and eventually learning how to write music, produce it, perform at a high level and not being scared of the crowd is what motivated me to turn up to that caliber and mix the best of both worlds. As a typical violinist, you’re always lost in your own music mimicking what you practiced all those endless hours and playing that for the audience. With Hip Hop as my inspiration, I learned how to be an entertainer, how to amaze people with not just my playing, but my interpretation of the music they listen to. I’m also a big fan of breakdancing “b-boying” and I also combine dancing along with my playing which gives an entire new dimension to my performance.
Is there a musician who you would like to collaborate with? If so who & why? To be honest, music is a gift that I was born with and trying to be like other musicians was never my dream. I know it might sound cheesy, but I always wanted to be unique and be like nobody else in the music industry. That’s why I always expanded my horizon beyond just playing the violin, but putting an entire show together. I love movies and theater so I look up to many directors such as Michael Bay or Christopher Nolan. They’re ways of storytelling is exactly how Beethoven composed and put together symphonies in his own day. Things that make the audience go “wow” while watching and listening. A big part of my show is also my visuals that make you feel like you’re in the music. I think the next step in my journey is to colab with an awesome choreographer, show producer that would put together some amazing music and dance that eventually I can take on the road.
You will be performing in Palm Springs on June 28 at the Stonewall Humanitarian Awards Gala, what are you looking forward to the most? I think its an amazing opportunity and a privilege to perform at The Stonewall Humanitarian Awards Gala. I’m a big advocate of equality, the freedom to express yourself and instead of violence, to just meet in the middle; and talk about our differences and how we can live in harmony. God created us equal and no matter who says otherwise, no one should ever be discouraged in doing what they love or what they believe in. I educated my self of the history of Stonewall and the violence that took place there on June 28th, 1969. I’m a huge LGBT supporter and I have too many gay friends who have been victims of some sort of abuse or violence. I’m honored to be a part of this years anniversary and my mission is to spread love and positivity through the power of music.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
A LITTLE HOMEWORK FOR YOUR SUMMER BREAK BY CHRISTOPHER HERITAGE What does your summer look like? Kicking back in the pool, floating in the sun with a chilled drink in your hand? Heading up the hill to find a cooler place to hang out? Maybe house-hunting now that season is over, in hopes of finding that perfect place to call home next Fall? Summer means we’re hot and we’re lazy, but we should never pass up an opportunity to learn, and to think about things that can affect our lives. With the legal and political picture changing almost daily, here are a couple of important issues to look into - one to help you stay up with the times, and the other to help protect yourself: LGBTQ Rights Are Under Siege In many areas, politicians and anti-LGBTQ groups are furiously chipping away at some of the many civil rights we have fought so hard to gain in the past decades. And they are taking action to prevent us from gaining more rights. Here are some of the bills currently under consideration in states across the country: Anti-Transgender Bills, which promote or allow discrimination against trans people. These include restrictions on use of singlesex restrooms; authorizing health care discrimination; restricting transgender students’ full participation in school; allowing religion as a reason to discriminate; and making it more difficult to get proper gender-identification paperwork. Religious Exemption Bills which allow people to discriminate against others based on their religious beliefs. Some allow lawsuits challenging government policy. Others would allow anyone, including government employees and for-profit businesses to discriminate against marriage for same-sex couples, sexual activity outside heterosexual marriage, and transgender people. Some would allow professionals who otherwise are held to high standards of service to human beings to refuse to serve people based on their religious beliefs. Bills, which prohibit cities and other local governments from enacting broader nondiscrimination laws than those offered by the state. These include capping protections for LGBT people.
32 THESTANDARDPS.COM
There are already numerous cases being heard in federal courts that could change the LGBTQ civil rights picture for better or worse. A religious rights case now before the U.S. Supreme Court could make it possible for businesses to refuse service to people based on the religious beliefs of the owner. If decided in favor of business owners, LGBTQ people could be denied equal rights in the marketplace and our community would become second-class citizens, once again. A final decision is expected in the next month or two. Take a few minutes this summer to consider how you can help in our endless journey to full equality as citizens and as human beings. Our community circles the world, and action and support are needed everywhere. You could write letters to editors, sign petitions or donate to the various groups that are working to promote our civil rights. And if nothing else, you can stay atop of the legal and political issues that affect us, and pass the word along to a friend who can help. And on a totally different subject: You Found That Perfect House - Now What? One of the most common questions I get from prospective clients is “How should I title the house I am buying? With all the action around house-hunting and negotiating price, it’s easy to forget that the escrow company is going to ask, “How do you want to take title?” It’s a decision you must make before escrow can close, and it’s not always easy to know what is best for you. Are you a single person? Are you married? Or do you have a life partner or relative who will be buying the house with you? If you are single, you will normally title the house in your name as a single person, or in the name of your Trust, if you have one. When one or more other people will also be on title, there are some choices to be made, and there could be legal issues down the road if you don’t choose the best option: Joint Tenancy - if you are married or registered domestic partners, this is a most common way to hold title. Each spouse has equal
right to the house, and if one passes away, the other automatically owns the entire home. It doesn’t have to go through probate. But if you are buying a house with someone who is a relative, a friend, or a life partner, joint tenancy is not usually the best option. Consider that the joint tenant might someday have serious financial problems leading to bankruptcy; or that he or she is sued because of a car accident; or the relative or friend files for divorce from their spouse - you could lose the house because it could be taken away from your joint owner to pay a debt or in settlement of a divorce.
NEED FOOD?
For these and other reasons, it is usually not smart to put a son or daughter on a title with you, in hopes that he or she can automatically own the house if you die. People often think that is a good way to avoid probate and keep the house in the family. But we can’t know the future, and you have no way of predicting if changes in your or your children’s lives will allow this plan to work. Too often, life doesn’t play out as we hope it will. Tenants in Common - If you are married but want to keep your share of the property completely separate from your spouse’s; or if you are life partners or simply sharing ownership with friends or relatives, tenants in common is generally a good choice for titling. Each owner has a percentage share of the property, and exercises control only over that share. A co-owner’s debt or divorce won’t affect your share, because only you own it. You are free to leave it in your Will or Trust to whomever you choose. Holding Title in a Trust - I recommend creating a revocable living trust to hold all your assets. When you have a Trust, a probate of your estate will not be necessary in most cases. You identify a Trustee to succeed you if you become incapacitated or pass on, and that person will distribute your property to the beneficiaries you have named in the Trust. When you have a Trust, title to your home is taken in the name of the Trustee (normally you while you are still living), not your name as an individual or the individual names of husband and wife. This summer, think about your financial picture and how to best hold and pass on your assets. No matter how tiny or how huge your assets, I assure you that you will really kick back and rest easy knowing that you are protected and your property will go where it should if something happens to you. FITNESS
CLEANING YOUR WAY TO FITNESS BY JILL LANGHAM
Hello all! It’s June and the days of light are here. It’s the month of my birth, the Summer Solstice and the longest day of light, my birthday, June 21. And as I looked at the topic of this month, Sports and Fitness, I realized that I am participating in both. I keep fit by working out and teaching fitness, using myself as a role model, and as a dancer, I’m involved in a sport. Well, that is, if you look at this particular definition that I found of the word sport. “Success or pleasure derived from an activity such as hunting or fishing” Ergo… dancing is a sport since I experience both success and pleasure from doing it! But, what about you? Are you involved in any sports? How about fitness? There are many trends today that revolve around fitness including spinning, boot camps, yoga, Pilates, zumba, ropes, weight
34 THESTANDARDPS.COM
lifting, aerobic classes and the list goes on. Most of these involve gym memberships, class fees, special footwear or clothing, in other words, money. With the advent of the internet we can watch u-tube, podcasts, listen to CD’s or download classes as long as you have access to Wi-Fi or cable. For the most part there are no more excuses for not participating in some type of fitness program, but yet I often find myself thinking about the fixed income population, who may not have access to Wi-Fi, cable or the internet or who may not have the money to devote to fitness and asked myself what options they might have. We know walking, running or jogging is almost cost-free once you have a decent pair of shoes but if you live in a climate that has all 4 seasons there may be many months in which its not conducive to be outside, so then what. Riding a bike? Again, there is the initial cost of the bike and the issue of the seasons; so, I wondered if there were any other possibilities.
I started thinking about house keeping and house cleaning chores and that is when the light went off. I live alone and cannot afford to pay someone to come in and clean my house so it up to me to do the weekly chores and realized that it’s a great way get a good workout. I have 4 large mirrored doors in my hallway and of course big mirrors as well in the 2 bathrooms. I don’t know why or how but these mirrors are always dirty. I am constantly seeing streaks or fingerprints on them and it drives me crazy. I have tried the newspaper and vinegar solution, along with every so-called miracle glass cleaner out there to no avail. I tried spot cleaning them and bought new rags and paper towels but they were still streaked. So, I finally decided to put a little muscle and elbow grease into it and lo and behold, my mirrors were sparkling clean and my deltoids muscles got a great workout, too. Then there was the issue to my white tile floors, the ones my contractor told me not to get because I would be cleaning them all the time. Well, he was right and I was so wrong. Even if I take my shoes off the minute I walk into the house, there are always stains,
hair (lots of hair and I have no pets to blame) and tons of dust. I kept trying to sweep them clean as often as twice a day but they would still be dirty. I finally broke down and got a steamer but that was only a temporary fix. Then a friend of mine bought me a Swiffer, which I use but again, nothing beats getting on my hands and knees with a bucket of water and scrubbing each tile. And don’t even get me started on the grouting! Cleaning the floor on your hands and knees gets old but it is also a great way to work the shoulders and arms as well as your upper back. Then one day while listening to music while cleaning, I found myself standing on the rag that I was using. I began twisting and turning to the beat (think of the game Twister) and twisted my way across the floor. Now add in a little 420 and off I went. My floors were shining and my hips, legs and “glute” muscles were very sore from gyrating for 45 minutes! So, from now on if you are broke or bored, grab a rag and start cleaning your way to Fitness! To your health! XOXO Jill, your Dancing Queen!

BE STEADWELL RELEASES NEW ALBUM QUEER LOVE SONGS BY MARTHA TANG
Follow Up To 2017 Album Breakup Songs “Be’s songwriting is fresh and individual in the same personal storytelling way of Joni Mitchell or Carly Simon. Some might think it’s premature to align Be’s Queer Love Songs with such large and iconic artists but much of their best and lasting music was created at the beginning of their careers. Independent singer-songwriter Be Steadwell releases her first full studio album, “Queer Love Songs” –available now. Download / Stream Queer Love Songs. First Single “Sometimes” released May 3rd, following on the heels of fan favorite “Leo”. Steadwell said of the album: “I’m a black, queer, woman, singer songwriter and I believe that everybody deserves a cheesy love song. That’s why I wrote Queer Love Songs. “Sometimes”, a sweet and earnest love song reflects on an experience loving a gender non-binary partner. In “The Door”, a collaboration with folk icon Toshi Reagon, Be laments the end of a relationship. In “Gay Sex”, Steadwell presents a satirical response to a noxious political environment suggesting we all go home to have gay sex, dedicating it to fascists and homophobes everywhere. In “Netflix”, she considers the complications of love in the information age. Be Steadwell speaks to a deeply troubling and relatable truth in her lyric: “Sex is elusive on a good night. Netflix is fucking up my sex life.” “Queer Love Songs” serves as the follow up album to Steadwell’s album “Breakup Songs” coupled with her second sold out European tour in the fall of 2017. Steadwell impacted her hometown of Washington DC when she joined the star-studded line up of 2017’s Women’s March, sharing the stage with Madonna, Ashley Judd, Janelle Monae, and The Indigo Girls among many more fearless artists standing up for women’s rights and social freedom in the current political climate. Be Steadwell is also a favorite with the
NYC audiences in her yearly appearances at Toshi Reagon’s Word Rock Sword Festival at (Le) Poisson Rouge and Rock Solid Women, the three night festival curated by icon Nona Hendryx. Check out Steadwell’s website for all up and coming tour dates. Be Steadwell is a voice within her generation that inspires, brings hope and offers comfort through her songs to fans old and new. Be Steadwell will soon become your new favorite artist. Queer Love Songs is a beautiful ode to queer love, or any kind of love because it speaks the truth” - Nona Hendryx “[Queer Love Songs] is a fulfillment of her long-term goal to make queer love songs that speak to the whole world.” –BANDCAMP “With honesty, humor, and originality, Be Steadwell brings a poet’s heart to her songs. She is true to her Muse.” Christian John Wikane, PopMatters “Be Steadwell is a force to be reckoned with.” –Autostraddle Follow Be Steadwell: Website | iTunes | Spotify | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

SOCIAL COMMENTARY
MOTHER’S BABY, DADDY’S... BLESSING! BY DR. STEPHAN M. SCOGGINS
This is the month of June so, of course, we have to pay homage to fathers. Because we so frequently hear of “deadbeat dads”, “father bashing” and of what some father’s DON’T do, let’s pause to celebrate what some fathers DO. In some communities, just having a father is treated like a delicacy. Because I grew up with a father, I don’t know the void of not having one. I absolutely appreciated that my father took me to school and picked me up every day. Being able to run to the car and immediately start unloading with the pros and cons of the day was nothing less than exhilarating! Just so that we are on the same page, let’s start with defining, who is a father? Yeah, yeah, yeah we all saw the video in the fifth grade. (Smile) A father is not limited to who Maury Povich says it is. A father is a male, who is strong enough to provide healthy, guided life examples, yet sensitive enough to create open communication. Sorry ladies. While some women frequently say, “I am my child’s mother and father”, you can only be your child’s mother. You may have responsibilities of a mother and father, but you can only be their mother. Close your eyes and think of one of the BEST memories you have of your father figure. Close your eyes! (Smile) Email your response to esteem@roadrunner.com and as always, your name and accompanying information will remain completely confidential. I can only imagine that some of the responses will be memories of gutbusting laughter, fishing together, getting you your first car, walking you down the aisle at your wedding, catching you doing something wrong, but handled it right, awkwardly telling you about sex and many others (smile). Wasn’t that beautiful? Just going down memory

lane allows us to re-live those wonderful experiences. Now, it’s our turn to consider what you are doing or what you can do to leave equally and perhaps even better impressionable experiences on the people who you are a father figure? This is where we have a spectacular opportunity to not hold back. Statistically, it is said that the foundation of children’s behavior is formed by the time they are five years old. Well, if we really ascribe to that, we should make every effort possible to make sure that all children are inundated with as many inoculations of love and knowledge that we can impart. We should ensure that when the kids, who we are blessed to inspire, motivate, and educate complete the assignment of recounting memories of their fathers, that there will
be no pause, but rather front and back writings of unspeakable joy. That’s right! It is alright for you to feel proud. I believe it was Jesse Jackson who said, “We do best what we do most”. That’s how we’re able to BE better fathers, just work at it every day. In speaking with several friends, the one commonality is that many young boys don’t remember their father saying those three words. That’s right, “Switch to Geico”(smile). Nah, of course, I mean, “I love you”. There may be some cultural influences. Historically, some cultures where saying, “I love you” is stated, with sincerity, as regularly as saying, “Good morning.” However, now that I think about it, as much as I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that my father loved me, I don’t have, not even one, recollection of hearing the words from my father. In spite of not hearing it, I never felt more loved by a father. He showed me daily. Here is another assignment. What are you currently doing as a father that you think you can do better? How will you go about
implementing the change? I ask that as a loaded question. Actually, I would like to suggest that if you make changes to your “fathering” style, that you do it in a manner that will be comfortably received. Here is an example. When a department store is going to make a change, say like, store hours, they don’t just make an abrupt change. They serve notice. Where I’m going with this suggestion is, so that your children won’t feel like you are being “weird” you might want to create conversations that will make your changes, no matter how beautiful, more receptive by your children. If you start hugging them out of the clear blue and saying, “I love you”, they may say, “Are you dying? (Smile). Some mother’s get jealous because no matter how much they do for the kids, even when they are the custodial parent, the kids always say, “I want to see my father”. (Smile) While fathers may not be perfect they are so marvelous I believe perfection does exist. Happy Father’s Day!
