2019 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE …FOR THE GAY GUY WHO HAS EVERYTHING BY MICK SANDOVAL
Let’s face it: the best gifts are more about want than need. They simultaneously create and satisfy a want you probably didn’t even know you had. Necessities are great, but uh, you can only get so many socks and ties. This holiday, it’s time to skip the lame gift cards and clothes for the guy who seems to have everything. Instead, surprise him with one of these items he never even knew he wanted. He’ll remember them much longer than he’d remember the same recycled gifts he always gets.

THE HOLIDAYS…FROM A QUEENS POINT OF VIEW BY JASON PHILLIPS It may not feel like it but, like it or not the holidays are just around the corner. With that in mind we wanted to bring you a bit of holiday fabulousity, fierceness, & fun and what better way to do that but by hearing from a few members of Palm Springs Drag Royalty and what they might have in store for the holidays. Get ready, here’s what they had to say.
Bella Da Ball What is your fondest holiday memory? As a young child, I asked for and received a kids’ play stove and refrigerator. In photo, I am with my brother who received a big truck (box we are playing on) and the refrigerator is in the scene. Also, Riding a round metal saucer down the snowy hill. And, as an adult, attending Midnight Mass at the Vatican with the Pope celebrating Mass. Favorite Holiday Song Mariah Carey---All I Want For Christmas Is You. I can play that song and hear that a dozen times a day or more all season! Love it at the shows we do! And We Need A Little Christmas from Mame. One of the first drag shows we did in the desert was at Sweetwater Saloon and it was a big group production number with The Delicious Divas. I was Mame, of course! We had my chord organ on stage (received as a kid for another Christmas!) for the words—carols at the Spinet….. Favorite Holiday Treat Thumbprint cookies—with pink frosting. My Mother would make porcupine meatballs (with rice for the novice!) and was a special treat at holiday family gatherings with special dinner rolls from our hometown bakery. Loved seven-layer bars (we had another name which isn’t too appetizing sounding and not good for print!)
Gift to Give Clothing, watches, dog bed. Gift to Get Jewels, diamonds, rhinestones, sparkle, color. Holiday Beverage Amaretto Sour on ice! The good stuff Amaretto! And the real Squirt brand sour soda pop! Holiday Movie White Christmas with the music, the setting, the furs, the costumes, the singing, the dancing, the fabulous actors and actresses; Holiday Inn, A Charlie Brown Christmas, How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Décor? Over the Top or a bit sedate? Over the top and then some. My partner loves to decorate and we have theme trees, small trees, medium trees, big trees, different color trees, wreaths, garlands, lights galore, collection of sleighs (found one at Jackie Lee and Jim Houston’s estate sale). The more the better! Lights! Sparkle! Finally, you’re getting ready to paint the town, what would be your go to Holiday Outfit…. It’s winter, it’s cold, furs (faux, of course, to be politically correct!). A swingy skirt is always fun and festive and fashionable. And show plenty of leg with those high heels. And when I’m not Bella, some fabulous dinner jacket, of course.

COVER Marina Mac What is your fondest holiday memory? As a kid, leaving a note and cookies for Santa Clause and the find the next morning he had ate the cookies and left me a note back. This made my world and that feeling I had all those years ago, has stuck with me Favorite Holiday Song. “I’ll be home for Christmas” I cry every time. I relate to it. As a veteran, I know the feeling of wanting to go home, especially around the holidays. Favorite Holiday Treat. Snicker Doodle Cookies. Period. Is there anything really better? Gift to Give. Something from the heart and means a lot to the gift receiver and myself. It’s an extension of my love to them. Gift to Get. Love and Friendship. As cliché as it sounds, its a truly all I want. Holiday Beverage. Eggnog, no rum. I like the taste of it as is. Holiday Movie. The Classic, “A Christmas Story.” You’ll shoot your eye out!!! Décor? Over the Top or a bit sedate? More than a bit Sedate, Its almost non existent. The thought of packing it all up makes me tired. Finally, you’re getting ready to paint the town, what would be your go to Holiday Outfit. Something that says “LOOK AT ME!!! I NEED ATTENTION!!” You know, all the bells and whistles.....literally.

Décor? Over the Top or a bit sedate? Well! How about that I could give you so many answers for this question, I guess it depends on my mood, but nothing is popping into my head… Next question please.
Finally, you’re getting ready to paint the town, what would be your go to Holiday: I do prefer an intimate evening at home but of course wearing a new pair of rhinestone heels and watching Netflix.
Ethylinna Canne What is your fondest holiday memory? My fondest holiday memory would be going to the Madonna Inn with my grandmother every Christmas to see the decorations. If you’ve never been to the Madonna Inn, you are missing out. It’s a fabulous hotel and restaurant nestled in quaint San Luis Obispo. The hotel is 1960’s kitsch to the extreme!! The Gold Rush Steak House is adorned with hot pink vinyl booths and a golden forest of delight. The entire resort comes alive every holiday and the decor is always different. My grandmother and I would take in all the sights, have a piece of pie, a cup of hot cocoa, and relish in the magic of it all. www. madonnainn.com Favorite Holiday Song. I actually have many favorite Holiday songs, but to be honest, I have a favorite Holiday Album. “Wrapped in Red” by Kelly Clarkson, is always on repeat at my house beginning November 1st. Kelly sings the classics like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Silent Night” while brining you some contemporary selections like “Run Run Rudolph” and “4 Carats”. It’s truly the soundtrack for the holiday season. Favorite Holiday Treat. My favorite holiday treat would be homemade old-time divinity candy! Another past time that my grandmother passed down to me. It consists of sugar, sugar, and more sugar. Sometimes referred to as white fudge, its what makes mouths happy! Download the recipe at www.houseofnasheats.com Gift to Give. The gift to give during the holidays is an experience. Give tickets to a play, a musical, an amusement park, a special holiday review, a photo op with Santa, the list goes on and on.
Giving the gift of an experience is something that your loved one will remember for years to come. It’s these moments of shared joy that I believe make the holiday season extra special. I’d recommend gifting tickets to see “A Christmas Story: The Musical” playing this month at the McCallum Theater, “A Charlie Brown’s Christmas” at Fantasy Springs Casino, or my holiday review “A Very Ethyl Christmas” at Moxie Palm Springs. (tickets on sale at Eventbrite) Gift to Get. Well I am a gal who loves sparkly things, so jewels, clothes, and cash are always welcome and LOVED when wrapped up with a bow under the tree. Holiday Beverage. My favorite beverage would have to be a hot peppermint mocha latte. There really is nothing better in the cool mornings and crisp nights as you help Santa find out who’s been naughty or nice! Holiday Movie. Auntie Mame is the quintessential holiday movie at my house. Although it’s not specific to the holiday season, it does ring true to the human spirit and brings good tidings to all. Décor? Over the Top or a bit sedate? Honey, I’m a drag queen, so it must be WAY OVER THE TOP, or you shouldn’t bother. “A bit sedate” said no queen ever. Finally, you’re getting ready to paint the town, what would be your go to Holiday Outfit. The go to outfit would be a sparkle blouse, cigarette pant, and a hostess skirt. Why mess with something from the 60’s that was so good that’s it’s stood the test of time. (photo included for reference..:) )

COVER Sassy Ross What is your fondest holiday memory? The lights on people’s houses and lawns or maybe the smell of cinnamon and warm cookies everywhere. Definitely the holiday foods being prepped and holiday parties with friends and my husband Warren <3 & my 3 babies (3 Chihuahuas). Ooh sorry boys I’m taken, but you still can send me your Holiday pictures wearing only a Santa’s Hat. Favorite Holiday Song. This is easy! Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” If I don’t play and perform this song at least 1,501 times during the holidays, it is not a Holiday for me. Favorite Holiday Treat. Anything cinnamon, I mean ANYTHING with cinnamon. Did I mention Cinnamon! Gift to Give. Do I have to ??? Gift to Get. Well in this case, I love anything as long as there are lots of them. Holiday Beverage. Ponche de Frutas, this is a Mexican holiday Beverage is made with a lot of fruits and a lot of booze including sugar Cane and Mexican Tejocote and Alcohol yay!!! Hmm Alcohol.. a second chance in life. As many may know, I was the recipient of true love this past year when my step-mother, Carol Jenkins, became a living donor and donated a kidney to me. That is the truest gift of love. I will be forever grateful. But if you want to buy me something, I love gift cards for restaurants. I’m such a foodie, and anytime I can go to a nice dinner with my husband, Kuper, off we go.
What is your fondest holiday memory? Several years ago, I hosted my “Holiday Orphan’s Dinner” on Christmas Day for friends and friends of friends that had no where to go for dinner. We ended up having 14 people at the table, and among them, were a couple of Broadway show dancer’s visiting from NYC, and another guest that knew one of them as a fellow Disney cast member from the parades. They were reconnected after almost 30 years. That was great. So much food and great company. I had a 12 foot fully decked out tree with wrapped gifts under the tree. Regardless of who showed up, everybody got to pick any gift from under the tree so that everyone had something to open on Christmas Day. It truly was magical. After that one, the one Christmas I spent completely alone while wandering the streets and cafes of Paris. I loved it!
Holiday Beverage. I’m really not much of a drinker, but I’m a sucker for a good hot cup of cocoa or hot chocolate. I’m also happy with a nice hot apple cider. Holiday Movie. I don’t really have a favorite holiday movie per say, but I like anything with that magical Santa feeling in it. Décor? Over the Top or a bit sedate? Back in the day... I used to go all in. Huge tree decorated with lights, ornaments and tinsel, completely covered in icicles. The house was wrapped in garland and lights, and outside, it looked like Disney threw up in my front yard. A giant 12 ft. electrified Mickey Mouse snow globe, inflatable and lit up decorations, and a big chimney on the roof that Santa would pop out of and then go back in again, one to pop back up moments later. The neighborhood kids loved it. I won best house several times. But I’m older now, and I don’t mind decorating, but I just have no patience putting it all away again! LOL
Favorite Holiday Song. As corny as it may sound, I’ve always love “O Holy Night”. In recent years, I’ve started singing “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen. But to perform, the drunk version of “The 12 “Daze” of Christmas”. It’s a crowd favorite I’ve been performing now for over 40 years. Favorite Holiday Treat. My grandmother passed along a family favorite recipe that I still make today. “Ice Box Fruitcake”. It’s all the candied fruit, along with a graham cracker base and other ingredients, then packed up tightly and put in the back of the refrigerator for a minimum of 3 days, but 5 or more is better. It’s a very wet, moist fruitcake, not like the dry baked ones. Everyone always raves about it. Gift to Give. I love giving gifts that are more personalized if I know the person well. Something I know they’d flip over. One year, I had a friend that
just loved vintage handbags. While perusing a few vintage stores one day, I came across the biggest envelope hand bag I’d ever seen. And it was a name designer. In perfectly new condition and still in it’s box and wrapping. The look on her face was worth every cent! It wasn’t the material thing that I gave her, but the expression on her face. That’s my favorite gift to give, the look of joy and happiness. Gift to Get. The best gift I’ve ever received was the gift of
Finally, you’re getting ready to paint the town, what would be your go to Holiday Outfit. If it sparkles, call me Neely! When you walk in to a room, make sure that everyone there knows it! Make an entrance in grand style, but don’t be obnoxious about it. Be gracious, accept the compliments, and wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday in whatever way they celebrate. A safe and joyous holiday season to all.

BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
There’s a long line of people behind you. Some are afraid to be seen, to speak up, or to show up. Others don’t want to get involved, so they’re sitting this one out. One thing, though: they’re all watching to see what you do next because, as in the new memoir, “A Wild and Precious Life” by Edie Windsor with Joshua Lyon, someone’s got to be first. There was never any doubt that little Edie Schlain was fiercely adored. The youngest child of the family, Edie grew up wanting to be like her big sister, protected by her big brother, and the apple of her parents’ eyes. She admits that she was “spoiled” then, not in a bad way but just enough to give her the confidence and brass a child of the Depression might need. She remembered the beginning of World War II, although not in the sense that most did: her recollections were of a houseful of boys, her brother’s friends, laughing and eating and gathering in her parents’ home before going off to war, and mourning when word arrived of those who’d never come home. Edie always liked boys and as she matured, she bantered with her brother’s friends although she occasionally thought it odd how much she liked watching other girls. “The idea that anything physically intimate with a girl could happen simply did not exist,” she said. But eventually, it did, with a tennis partner in college, then with a female roommate she loved before realizing that there was “no other available reality” than to fall into lockstep with other young women of the 1950s, settle down, and marry a nice man. The marriage lasted six months. At the end, Edie, who’d convinced her husband to adapt the surname “Windsor,” realized that she needed to tell him the truth. Pondering how to tell him, she immersed herself in Judy Garland “fantasy” musicals, and she planned: “Guess what, Judy? I’m a lesbian.” “If you’re looking to read about Edie’s Supreme Court case, put this down…” says co-author Joshua Lyon in his preface. But don’t be too hasty: “A Wild and Precious Life” has enough to offer, all by itself. Indeed, though he still touches upon the fight that helped achieve marriage equality, Lyon says that Windsor “desperately wanted” readers to know about her pioneering work in computers and technology, which was a “core part of her identity” and of which she was enormously proud. In her words here, which Lyon indicates
that she edited herself, Windsor also woos readers with breezy wit, racy love stories, and seemingly casual-not-casual, semi-nonchalant depictions of being a lesbian in the mid-twentieth-century, and what it was like living in the shadows but flirting hard with the light. Early in this book, Lyon says he fretted about how to finish it after Windsor died, but he needn’t have worried. Though its ending feels a little rushed, “A Wild and Precious Life” flows perfectly and entertains delightfully, making it a book you’ll want in front of you. “A Wild and Precious Life: A Memoir” by Edie Windsor with Joshua Lyon c.2019, St. Martin’s Press $27.99 / $37.99 Canada 274 pages

INDESIGN A PALM SPRINGS CHRISTMAS BY DANN FOLEY Though I had been coming to Palm Springs for many years, I have called Palm Springs my permanent home for more than 18 years. In all of that time, I made the rather momentous decision of staying put in my own home for the holiday. Considering that fact that I grew up back east in a quintessential Hallmark Christmas setting, it was big news when I informed my family that I would not be traveling for the holiday. That being said, I was raised in a home where Christmas truly was the most special time of the year. It was time for me to create my own traditions. Planning for Christmas in my childhood home began sometime mid-summer. I distinctly remember my mother planning decorations, making lists of gifts & guests and making finishing touches on recipes for her famous 22 varieties of homemade Christmas cookies. To this day potential recipients jockey for a position on that coveted list. All of these influences have left an indelible mark on me and I celebrate the season with the same gusto and flair here in Palm Springs Truth be told it took me about 10 years, a full decade, to get used to sunshine and green grass at Christmas. The lack snow was jarring to my Winter Wonderland visions of what Christmas should be. Over time my blood thinned out and I found that winters are actually chilly in the desert (I cannot live without my fireplace now) my longing for the Christmas of my childhood gave way to a new way of celebrating. I love having my windows open and my fire going throughout the day, the smell of freshly cut grass and flowers just outside, mixes with the traditional scents of the season indoors. We may not have snow but, we have sunshine and palm trees! Wrapping the trunks of palms and the multiple trunks of a Jacaranda tree with twinkling lights can be as festive as a holly tree. I have learned how to properly “fluff an artificial Christmas tree, wreath and garland so that they look like the real thing and still survive the bright sunshine of the daytime desert in December. I have also learned to embrace the pre-lit tree, a thought that combined with the artificial tree itself would have been cause for family intervention! Christmas in Southern California can be as laid back or as extravagant as you like. All of the trappings of a traditional Christmas are blended with margaritas and guacamole to create something uniquely SoCal. The tree is still center stage with a twist for some, I know people who decorate a live tree on the patio, sometimes towering over the mid-century butterfly rooflines of Palm

Springs. In our town Christmas is as a cool as a Rat Pack pool party or as luxuriously traditional in the Hollywood Golden Era Spanish style mansions in some of our neighborhoods. Of course, shopping is as much a part of the holiday as any other part of the year here in our valley. With the very best the entire world has to offer on display from here to LA, it’s difficult not to be overwhelmed or worse, jaded. I have learned to take the more laidback approach in this arena, as well. For me, it is as much about the wrapping as the gift. Even the most humble of offerings should be celebrated in their presentation. My belief is, the wrapping should reflect the sentiment of the gift. Let them know it comes from the heart (check out my wrapping bow making tutorial on YouTube). If you have followed me over the years, you know that I love to share local shops for gifts found only here in our special little nook. I have listed many wonderful local retailers who offer both the unique and charming, as well as, the luxurious and grand (check back issues on line). This year, I thought I would help you to simplify your shopping experience in the same way I intend to simplify mine. So, this is my Best Of, Go-To list of stops that I will patronize and share with all of our special readers. Forcing myself to stick to one choice per category was brutal! Everything Luxury / CABAZON OUTLET MALL. Located right here on the edge of our desert, you will not find a larger selection of luxury and brand names anywhere in the U.S. at off-price. For me and my friend Stephanie an all-night jaunt to Cabazon has become a tradition for our after Thanksgiving, pre-Black Friday shopping. We seriously don’t get home until about 5 am! Jewelry / JOSEPH GOOTT JEWELRY. Found inside the uberfabulous Maison Felice at the end of El Paseo, you will find the jewels of your dreams! Big or small, they have what you are hoping Santa will leave under your tree. Speak with Brandon Boswell to get the very best customer service offered on the entire street. Clothing / WIL STILES. Located in the heart of the Design District in Palm Springs, this local must-see has everything you need to look sharp and cool on Palm Canyon Drive. The owners, Wil & Molly are there every day and they offer some of the most unique designs and designers, not found anywhere else in the Valley. And the selection of designer sunglasses is second to none! Flowers / MY LITTLE FLOWER SHOP. I am always sending out floral arrangements to friends, family and clients. When it comes to the perfect holiday bouquet, no one can beat this Palm Springs establishment. Fresh, fabulous, sophisticated arrangements in every style, my advice is to just tell them your price range and allow them to…create.
Orchids / DR. ORCHID. A fabulous orchid arrangement is almost mandatory in smart homes of the desert. No one makes them more beautiful than or with higher quality plants that will last for months… and they have the best prices! You will be a gifting hero when one of their gorgeous potted arrangements is delivered. Need it done for your holiday home? They will pick up your containers and deliver them back filled to perfection! Beauty / ENVE MEDSPA. They are brand spanking new here in Palm Springs from Orange County and they offer the very latest in everything to make you look your very best! Every treatment, injection and product can be found at Enve. Look as fabulous as that holiday party outfit. You can find them in up-town Palm Springs on Palm Canyon. Housed in one of our iconic mid-century commercial buildings you can celebrate style and beauty. In need of a drink or bite after all that shopping? You will find two of Palm Springs favorites just steps from several of the stores above. 849 and/or the new Tac/Quila are the perfect places for fabulous food, delicious drinks and the best ambience in Palm Springs. Choose your vibe, both have unique décor that you can only find in Palm Springs! You are sure to find your friends or make new ones at both locations. Do yourself a favor and indulge in one of Albert’s (co-owner and pastry chef) homemade desserts at 849! Ultimately, Christmas is like decorating & design, it is about sharing your true self, finding the things that make you happy and celebrating our homes with the one’s we love. As in decorating I say to you, choose the things you love and you cannot go wrong. Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays! FILM
SEASON OF LOVE THE FIRST EVER HOLIDAY ROMCOM FOR LGBTQ+ WOMEN BY MICHEL KHORDOC
Tis the season for a queer holiday movie … Finally! The production team of Tello Films and DASH Productions are bringing something new and different this holiday season: “Season of Love” - the first ever Lesbian/Queer Holiday Rom-Com. Written by Kathryn Trammell, directed by Christin Baker, “Season of Love” is a lighthearted rom-com featuring a large ensemble cast of diverse women and their connected love lives during the hectic holiday period just before Christmas through the New Year who discover love truly is the best gift of all. The movie brings together some fan favorites including actresses from classic LGBTQ films and current television shows including Dominique Provost-Chalkley (“Wynonna Earp”, “Avengers: Age of Ultron”), Jessica Clark (“True Blood”, “A Perfect Ending”), Emily Goss (“Snapshots”), Laur Allen (“Young and the Restless”), Janelle Marie and Sandra Mae Frank (“Deaf West’s Spring Awakening”, “Daybreak”). “I’ve always wanted to do a Rom-Com movie, but if you’re going to do a Rom-Com why not do one that’s going to push the boundaries a little bit and gives this beautiful community what they so deserve, a happy ending,” says Dominique Provost-Chalkley. “It’s
24 THESTANDARDPS.COM
a Love Actually for our community,” comments Jessica Clark. The highly anticipated full-length film will of course deliver a very Christmassy soundtrack featuring a wide range of original tunes. Dominique Provost-Chalkley at the end of the movie performs “Lift Your Spirit Up”, the film’s lead track written by Billy Steinberg and Josh Alexander. Steinberg’s repertoire includes the 80s classics “Like a Virgin” by Madonna, “True Colors” by Cindy Lauper, and “Eternal Flame” by The Bangles. Every holiday season traditional and streaming networks create a ton of holiday romantic comedies but they consistently fail to create meaningful stories from the queer perspective. Taking over the holiday TV space, Lifetime just announced the release of 28 films this Holiday Season while its competitor, Hallmark, is delivering 24 new original movie premieres this season. And if both networks have made an effort to move toward diversity and inclusion by featuring women of color in leading roles, the
networks still have ways to go when it comes to other ethnicities and marginalized people - still an industry-wide issue. One area that is underserved across all networks is the lack of LGBTQ representation in its Christmas movies. While some movies hint at queer stories, explicit LGBTQ+ stories remain rare. . Decrying the lack of LGBTQ+ characters and more specifically LGBTQ+ female leads in holiday movies, Tello Films and DASH Productions are proud and excited to be breaking grounds and releasing the first ever Holiday romantic comedy for LGBTQ+ women, Season of Love this December. “We talk a lot today about diversity on screen but it’s also important to talk about diversity behind the camera. Season of Love has a queer female writer, director and producers that shape the voice of the film and it rings so true to a queer woman’s experience because we have queer women all over this cast and crew. It’s a delight to be part of that,” says Emily Goss, Tis the “Season of Love”! “If you don’t see what you want,” says filmmaker Christin Baker, “then make it!” She certainly did!
The film is available online now and will be available for rent and/or purchase in early December 2019 at: https://www.seasonoflovemovie.com/ Watch the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTeaM v5S8WY&feature=youtu.be

DAMNED IF I KNOW BY LEE LYNCH
Damned if I know whether or not all the rabble rousing of the last sixty years has done us a lick of good. I thought the issue of our rights was pretty much settled, but on October eighth, 2019, Stanford Law School professor Pamela Karlan argued before the U.S. Supreme Court that gay employees are already protected from job discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights of 1964 federal civil rights law. Some of the Justices seemed to believe that inclusion of sexual orientation in Title VII would have appeared preposterous to the court in 1964. Yet, Ms. Karlan argued, the Supreme Court has applied twenty-first century standards to a number of prior
26 THESTANDARDPS.COM
decisions. Discrimination against a person because of gender, she stated, already covers discrimination against sexual orientation. A woman who dates another woman and is fired for it, is the object of discrimination by the simple fact of her gender. A man will not be fired for dating a woman. The argument is plainspoken and ironclad. Some of the judges needed it repeated many times in many ways. I’d been out four years by the time Title VII went into effect. The practice of favoring men over women was so blatantly wrong in my mind; I couldn’t believe a law was necessary. It certainly had nothing to do, in the late 1960s, with queer people keeping our jobs. You just shut up and stayed in your closet at work.
When I became a vocational counselor a few years later, my focus was on getting people employed, anywhere, anyhow. There was no question of finessing hires. Women became sewing machine operators at the clothing manufacturers of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Men delivered the raw materials, carted away the completed garments, and, for maybe ten cents an hour more, maintained the sewing machines. To have questioned the part I played in matching the unemployed to jobs by gender was to let my principles—and the law—come between desperate women, destitute men, and their survival. To invoke, or even be aware of, their newly stated rights, was irrelevant for most minimum wage workers. Hearing Title VII invoked in defense of gay workers in 2019 was an eye opener. Ms. Karlan offered the Supremes, and Congress, an out. New, excruciatingly drawn out legislation is not needed. If a man is fired because he loves another man, and a woman is not fired because she loves a man, then the original man was fired because he’s a man. Period. These arguments come up, not because the fired individual is a bad employee, but because the employer has a prejudice, an historical, religious, or personal belief about gay people, in other words, because the employer has the power. Just like the women ruining their eyes and hands sewing, the men destroying their back and knees carting, the fired gay person is a victim of someone who has more power, in these cases, the employer. The United States was not created to disenfranchise people, although we do a lousy job of respecting the rights of Native Americans and other people of color. When the worker is powerless, the employer can dictate who feeds their families and who doesn’t. Laws have always been bandied about, reinterpreted, applied rightly or wrongly, bent and ignored, depending on who is in power. And that’s where the activism of the last sixty years does make a lick of sense. We-the-people, must stand against courts which would sustain the imbalance of power and we must stand for the use of law to protect workers from prejudice, to protect veterans who live in the streets with their war nightmares, women battered into submission by employers and partners, queer people whose existence is an offense in the eyes of all-powerful beholders. I no longer believe we can stop war, erase bigotry, take power and use it for only good. I no longer suit up with a wet bandana headband for tear gas, carry a rolled-up newspaper for protection, stay ever on the lookout for escape routes should the march, the rally, the sit-down, turn dangerous. I know now that the rabble rousing must go on and on, if only to keep the lid on the inhumanity of humanity.

FITNESS
THE GIFT OF FITNESS BY JILL LANGHAM
Hello to you all. I hope this finds you well. This is our Gift edition and I wanted to share a gift you might not have considered. This year I gave myself a gift. I hired a personal trainer to train me for a Bikini competition next year. It had been 9 years since I last competed and not only had my body changed but so had the categories for the competitors. Women’s bodybuilding no longer existed. It was replaced by the new category called Physique. They added Bikini as a category but it’s far from what the name might suggest. All the competitors look like bodybuilders who have great symmetry with smaller dimensions than bodybuilders but who are not as lean or hard as what we’ve come to expect in the past. I will be 65 in June and thought it would be a great long-term plan to see what my body could do at “retirement” age!
winner, beating out the winners in middle Weight & Heavyweight Novice categories. No one was more surprised than me!
I shared my goal with my friends who have all been very supportive but thought it was interesting that so many of them thought it was odd that a trainer would hire another trainer to train them. I’m a very motivated person but knew I needed someone else to see what I can’t see so hired a trainer who had helped prepare 100’s of competitors in the past.
More important than any bodybuilding enhancing drugs is what I refer to as the “Eating Plan.” On this plan, I eat every 3 hours 6 times a day. Like in the past, I weigh and measure every morsel that goes into my mouth. By doing this I can make adjustments if I hit a plateau or am not seeing the desired results. Without exact measurements it’s impossible to know what’s working and what isn’t.
It’s only been a month but I have learned a lot already. I am seeing some new muscle growth on my shoulders, back and gluts, all of which is what needs to happen in order to make me competitive.
It’s so easy to second-guess yourself if you don’t record and measure everything that leads to extra calories, excess weight and no definition in the muscles. It’s truly a scientific change that is being created by eating every 3 hours, 6 times a day. This will increase your metabolism allowing for fat burning, while working out with weights to increase muscle mass. Towards the end of what is usually a 12week plan, the eating plan is revised cutting carbohydrates, increasing cardiovascular sessions and lifting heavier which prepares the body for the necessary changes needed to have a winning physique.
I should tell you that most competitors in the U.S. outside of competitions that urine test for steroids, use some type of enhancement agents to achieve their goals. I say this because the average woman will not be competitive and will wonder why she looks different from the woman on the cover of Fitness magazines. It’s frustrating for me to admit this because for over 25 years I worked out almost daily and had no visible results. In 2000, when I met my former husband, he taught me the proper way to feed my body but also started me on a low dose of testosterone and Growth Hormone. He also put me on a fat burner. As time went on I also used Anavar and Clenbuterol to assist my growth. The combination of these products created a fat burning machine, which helped me achieve a winning physique. I won 2nd place in Women’s Masters, First place in Novice and was the overall show
So, if you’re considering a different type of gift this coming season, you might want to consider the Gift of hiring a trainer to help you become the Best Version of You! Happy Thanksgiving to you all! Xoxo Jill, Your Dancing Queen

WELLNESS
GROUNDING BY DANIEL CLEMENS, CMT
We are electrical beings. Any modern textbook on human physiology will explain how healthy bone density is formed when bone is stressed by activities like weight training. This occurs though a phenomenon called piezoelectricity. When pressure is applied to bone, electrical dipoles are formed which attract the cells that build bones. An electrical current controls everything from our metabolism to our nervous system and muscle action, when positive and negative ions like sodium and potassium attract and repel each other. Just like the electrical wiring in our homes requires grounding, our bodies need to ground as well. Fortunately we have the earth under our feet to aid in this process. “Grounding” or “earthing” are common terms used to describe the benefits of unobstructed bodily contact with the earth. This can mean laying in the grass or on a sandy beach but most often it refers
30 THESTANDARDPS.COM
to walking barefoot. The soles of our feet seem to have the unique ability to absorb the healthy negative ions and other powerful energies emitted from the surface of the earth. Traditional Chinese Medicine reveals that there is an acupuncture point on the bottom of each foot called Yongquan, which means “bubbling spring”. This “spring” can absorb the yin energy from the earth and “bubble” it up through the entire body, restoring health and vitality in a variety of ways. And not only does the earth provide us with the very food and water that we consume, we are constantly bathed in a field of electromagnetic energy emanating from its core. The highly charged effect of lightening hitting the earth helps to replenish this electrical field. Eight million lightening bolts strike the earth every day! This ongoing and highly active current is needed for the health of the entire planet. When we wear shoes, especially with rubber or
plastic soles, we block that vital energy from being absorbed. We create an artificial barrier between us and the healing energy of the planet we live on. Obviously, we require shoes in order to protect us from the harsh surfaces that we walk upon, but whenever possible it is highly beneficial to go barefoot. Any patch of grass or sand, soil, even natural tile or concrete can substitute. Look for leather or cork soled shoes that do not act as an insulator. Products called grounding mats are available that work with the electrical ground existing in our homes through a regular plug outlet. In fact, Palm Desert is the headquarters of one of the pioneers in this kind of research. As we live our busy lives, we can become disconnected from the earth. We may take for granted all of the gifts that we receive from this incredibly abundant, living planet. A daily barefoot walk in the grass is a simple way to restore that connection. And that connection is a two-way circuit. Because as we receive healing energy from the earth, we also give it back. Daniel Clemens, CMT Owner, BodyTune Studio President, Holistic Care Cooperative

12TH SEASON OF DEZART PERFORMS OF PALM SPRINGS OPENS WITH HAND TO GOD When the puppets – and puppeteers – of the Tony-nominated Hand To God take to the stage November 8 – 17 as the 12th season opener for Dezart Performs, it’s definitely not Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. “Imagine Sesame Street in a mash-up with The Exorcist, and you’ve got the flavor of this hilarious but very-much-for-adult audiences play,” said Michael Shaw founding artistic director for Dezart Performs. “You’ll laugh for sure, but leave the kids at home. It’s a dark but dishy comedy.” After the death of his father, meek Jason finds an outlet for his anxiety at the Christian Puppet Ministry in the devoutly religious, relatively quiet small town of Cypress, Texas. Jason’s complicated relationships with the town pastor, the school bully, the girl next door, and—most especially—his mother, are thrown into upheaval when Jason’s puppet, Tyrone, takes on a shocking and dangerously irreverent personality all its own. The result: a play “so ridiculously raunchy, irreverent and funny it’s bound to leave you sore from laughing. Ah, hurts so good.” (New York Daily News) Written by Robert Askins, the production is directed by Shaw and features Yo Younger (Margery); Eddie Vona (Jason/Tyrone), Danny Gomez (Timothy), Brenna Williams (Jessica), and Roy Abramsohn (Pastor Greg). Dezart Performs, one of the Coachella Valley’s preeminent theatre companies, recognizes that the performing arts enrich the life and culture of a community, promote greater understanding and provoke insightful discussion. A deliciously witty, insightful, Pulitzer prize-winning play that explores the complexities of marriage and friendship. This touching, perceptive and witty play examines the complexities of marriage and friendship; the foibles
of spousal relationships that come with age and the changes that redefine and impact relationships. A perfect choice for CVRep’s 2019/20 season theme of “New Beginnings”, Dinner with Friends tells the story of Gabe and Karen, a happily married, middle-aged couple, living in Connecticut. They

As both couples struggle with questions of loyalty, individuality, and commitment in this delectable, sharply observed drama, the ultimate question is posed – If Gabe and Karen didn’t really know Beth and Tom as well as they assumed…do they really know each other? The willingness or unwillingness to engage in this re-evaluation is the heart and spirit of the play. “Donald Margulies is truly masterful at using humor and pathos to depict the complexities of spousal relationships, and I am confident that Dinner with Friends will stimulate many significant discussions between couples after seeing it,” says CVRep Artistic Director, Ron Celona. Directed by Darin Anthony and starring Corryn Cummins as Beth, Scott Golden as Gabe, Jennifer Sorenson as Karen and Chris Wallinger as Tom, the CVRep production of Dinner with Friends now through November 24, 2019 at the new CVRep Playhouse located at 68510 E. TRANSCENDENCE
FOR THAT VERY SPECIAL SOMEONE BY CHRISTINA HESTIA VRONAY RUGGLES
So, you have a transgender person in your life, and you’re in some way, shape or form, part of the population who will be buying gifts for them. Now, for many transgender people, they will have long been at their transition, and will probably have the same gifting needs as anyone else you’re buying for. For example, if you get fun calendars for people, let’s continue the trend for the transperson, ya? That’s fairly simple, yes? A large percentage of transgender people anyone comes across are going to be semi-matured transgender individuals, individuals who are a LOT more certain of
42 THESTANDARDPS.COM
who they are and what they want out of life. This Gift Guide is NOT for those transgender people. This is a gift guide for the new trans people in your life! Did an aunt, or a cousin, a niece or a nephew, a brother, a sibling, or an old or new friend come out to you as transgender? Are they suddenly acting different, expressing interests in things you never knew they loved, or even liked? Are they dressing differently, possibly strangely, as they attempt to cobble together a gender-affirming wardrobe? If you said yes to any of these questions, well then, this gift guide can hopefully be useful to you!
The easiest and best gift I can recommend for a newly out transgender person, is shopping! Whether they’ve come out as a man, a woman, or neither, or something else entirely, the important thing to know is that they’re wardrobe just might not match their newly announced gender identity. While for some people this may not be true, it’s true for enough transgender people I know of for me to recommend it as a gift. The aforementioned shopping spree doesn’t have to include you, though if you have a discerning eye for fashion, an understanding of the possible aesthetic they’re attempting to mimic, and the ability to very, very, very, delicately say “That doesn’t look good on you”, then maybe your time (and possibly your money!) would make a wonderful gift. The key is understanding that the trans person you’re shopping for may not understand their aesthetic yet, while simultaneously only having an ambiguous goal (e.g. appear feminine or masculine) with little understanding of how to casually achieve that goal. Developing an aesthetic is complicated, and when transgender people, you know, actually transition, they often times have to restart from scratch. Which means they’re playing catch up while their peers have spent years tailoring an aesthetic that communicates profound messages to others in society. Giving a transgender person the gift of being able to cultivate his or her own aesthetic is powerful. While few can afford to buy a new wardrobe outright, having a semi-regular contribution (say the holiday season) will be a very useful gift for many new trans people. It’s important to know that I don’t recommend just buying them a piece of clothing (or pieces of clothing) outright, unless they’ve specifically mentioned it. While it will still most likely be appreciated, I want to highlight the transformative power of getting the chance to build one’s own aesthetic. That’s the real gift. The clothes or makeup or what-have-you are a means to an end, and that end is better communicating one’s gender, identity, and values to those around you in a way that is meaningful. Transgender people want to communicate to others, via their aesthetic, that they’re their real gender, not the gender they were assigned at birth (and often the gender they went through their first puberty with). Clothes and accessories are a quick, simple way to do just that. So this holiday season, if you have a fresh out of the closet transgender person in your life, consider giving them the gift of aesthetic. The gift of identity building, of communication. The gift of beauty or handsomeness, or just looking sharp in general. P.S. Place a special focus on versatile pieces. While having some crop top, or macho tank top may be a first choice for the giftee, I emphasize the importance of clothing that can be worn in a wide variety of situations, such as business-to-business slut in my case.

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH: GET TESTED FOR BREAST CANCER. Lesbian and bisexual women may be at increased risk for breast cancer – and other cancers – compared to heterosexual women.* Knowing about breast cancer and what you can do to help prevent or find it early (when the cancer is small and might be easier to treat) may help save your life or the life of someone you love. The American Cancer Society recommends the following guidelines for breast cancer early detection for women at average risk: Women ages 40 to 44 have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with a mammogram if they wish to do so. Women ages 45 to 54 should get a mammogram every year. Women 55 and older can switch to a mammogram every 2 years, or can continue to get a yearly mammogram. Screening is recommended to continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live at least 10 more years. To learn more about how you can help reduce your risk of breast cancer or find it early, visit cancer.org/breastcancer or call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.
58 THESTANDARDPS.COM
All women should talk to their health care team; they are familiar with the known benefits, limitations, and potential harms linked to breast cancer screening. Women should also be familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel, and they should report any changes to a health care provider right away. Some women at high risk for breast cancer – because of their family history, a genetic tendency, or certain other factors – should be screened with an MRI along with a mammogram every year, typically starting at age 30. Talk with a health care provider about your breast cancer risk and the best screening plan for you.
