MODERNISM VISIONARIES
ALBERT FREY, DONALD WEXLER AND E. STEWART WILLIAMS
From a movement that eschewed ornamentation in favor of function, to a solution for social issues, Modernist architecture has been influencing building design since before the Second World War. It is characterized by its heavy use of new technologies with particular emphasis on the use of glass, steel and, of course, reinforced concrete. Many also define it as being the rejection of the old traditional neoclassical style and Beaux-Arts that were popularized during the previous century. Aside from the underlying principles of Modernist architecture, famously summarized by American architect Louis Sullivan as “form follows function,” the design style has a specific and recognizable aesthetic. The mixed use of cubic and cylindrical shapes feel asymmetrical, while flat roofs and the absence of ornamentation or moldings create a clean and simplified look compared to previous heavily decorated styles. As for materials, the use of metal, glass and exposed concrete gave Modernist buildings an industrial or utilitarian appearance. A fitting description based on Modernist architecture pioneer Le Corbusier’s declaration that a house is “a machine for living in.” There have been many prominent Modernist architects throughout the years but several of the most notable include:
ALBERT FREY Albert Frey belonged to a generation that believed in a political role for modern architecture, that of social liberation through machine-made, egalitarian and affordable designs. His chosen materials were aluminum, glass, cables and, eventually, the very boulders and sands of the desert where he settled. In a career that spanned more than 65 years, Mr. Frey remained true to the principle that architecture should make the most of the least. His best known works he created in the Palm Springs of the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s. In 1939, Frey moved to Palm Springs. He became part of the movement championed by other California modernists including John Lautner to emphasize the central place of nature in modern architecture.
DONALD WEXLER One of the most celebrated Midcentury Modern architects, Donald Wexler designed classic buildings in the spot that became ground zero for that era — Palm Springs Wexler, who was nicknamed “the Man of Steel” for the now-treasured homes and the rest of his work. He designed the main terminal of Palm Springs International Airport with its soaring view of the mountains, the Royal Hawaiian Estates development on a Polynesian theme, and Dinah Shore’s home, recently purchased by Leonardo DiCaprio, which could be the ultimate “Mad Men” house with its floor-to-ceiling glass walls, sunken bar and massive stone fireplace. Though his work was in demand, he thought of himself as a journeyman architect. But when midcentury design was widely rediscovered, he finally received renown and the homes he designed jumped in value.

WILLIAM F. CODY, JOHN LAUTNER AND WILLIAM KRISEL
E. STEWART WILLIAMS E. Stewart Williams, an architect whose many works in Palm Springs included a home for Frank Sinatra, helped define what became known as the Desert Modern style. Williams designed many public buildings in Palm Springs, including Temple Isaiah, which won an award from the American Institute of Architecture in 1949. In the 1950’s and 60’s, he completed several commissions for local banks and designed the mountain station for the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. In addition he was an extremely meticulous architect who had his hand in almost every aspect of his projects. He designed built-ins, light fixtures, mailboxes, and even light switches. Williams designed many public buildings in Palm Springs, including Temple Isaiah, which won an award from the American Institute of Architecture in 1949. In the 1950’s and 60’s, he completed several commissions for local banks and designed the mountain station for the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.
WILLIAM F. CODY Cody, an Ohio-born architect who graduated from USC in 1942 and began working in Palm Springs on the Desert Inn in 1945, was also seen as someone who went his own way. He didn’t take a purist’s perspective on design, and would take client’s invitations to design whatever they want, and go as far as he possibly can. Projects such as the curvaceous St Theresa’s Church, or Googie-esque Huddle’s Spring restaurant, show him breaking out of the straight lines that
12 THESTANDARDPS.COM
often defined midcentury modernism. And, at a time when the cadre of Palm Springs architects would help each other, passing on jobs or collaborating on projects, Cody rarely worked with others. His projects ranged from residential homes and condominiums, to commercial centers and industrial complexes, to city and community master planning.
JOHN LAUTNER Known for his residences, Lautner was also well-known for the commercial genre named for his design of Googie’s Coffee Shop in Los Angeles. Distinctive for its expansive glass walls, arresting form, and exuberant signage oriented to automobiles, Googie became a fixture in 1950s America but was regularly ridiculed by the architectural community. Lautner’s reputation suffered, despite that fact his designs were as good as ever. Following some lean years, he rose again in the 1960s with the Chemosphere House and pouredconcrete houses such as the Elrod Residence Palm Springs.
WILLIAM KRISEL William Krisel, AIA, is one of the most important figures in modern architecture since the 1950s. His influence has been farreaching; he is one of the few architects to have succeeded in the challenge of bringing modernism to the general public. His designs have fundamentally re-defined how we live today.

GAY WEB SERIES, HISTORY, RETURNS FOR THIRD SEASON BY JEFF DORTA
The third season of Jack Tracy’s LGBTQ series, HISTORY, premieres this Valentine’s Day. The new Season aims to answer the age-old Question: What is Love? Executive produced by Tracy, and financed through him, the third season features six half-hour episodes and follows his character, Jamie, as he discovers how the examples set by his parents framed his expressions of love and what he values most in relationships. The story picks up a year after the close of season 2 when the gang is finally all coupled up. Jamie is with Mark, a sexually charged Brit, and they are considering the possibility of opening their relationship, eyeing Will’s ex as a possible candidate. Meanwhile, Will is deciding whether or not to give in to his new boyfriend’s insistence they move in together while Matthew has decided to look past the gang’s objections and accept his boyfriend’s flaws. Then there’s Ted, whose own hang-ups may destroy his burgeoning relationship with a local drag queen. “The struggles all of these 30-somethings face are a direct result of growing up gay,” explains Jack Tracy. “They’re forced to confront complex issues such as gender roles, toxic masculinity, rejection and loyalty. In the end, we learn what love is for each individual, and whether the baggage from their past can ever be overcome.” Nearly all of the casts from the first two seasons of HISTORY return to reprise their roles in season 3. Will Cohen stars as Will, Jacob Seidman as Matthew and Trent Stone as Ted. Samanthia Nixon takes over the role of Bianca. Supporting actors include James Evans as Mark, Matt Kuyawa as Kevin, Kathy Biehl as Jamie’s mother Molly, Corry J. Ethridge as Elliot, Claire Kennedy as Jamie’s therapist and Haulston Mann as Brandon. Key to HISTORY are the flashback scenes that shed light on where Jamie may have learned the behaviors that shape his adult life. Season three flashes all the way back to the 1980s and 1990s and viewers witness Jamie’s formative childhood moments: his father’s business failures, his mother’s depression, being caught with gay porn, coming out to his sister and his obsession with his weight and appearance. Aaron Drill plays Young Jamie and Alexandra Rey takes on the role of his mother, Young Molly. Also, as is a tradition with HISTORY, a new original song by Jack Tracy will accompany the third season. In “You Lose,” Jack laments on a central theme to the series, singing, “If you’re scared your choice was mistaken, it never matters what road you choose.
When everything you’re given is taken. Life is a game you lose.” HISTORY is produced and distributed by Necessary Outlet, a film production company founded and owned by Jack Tracy that produces several LGBT web series and will soon debut its first fulllength film, Snowflake. Written by Jack Tracy and currently touring the festival circuit, Snowflake draws inspiration from the 2016 US election, telling the story of a group of gay men and their friends and how they deal with the election of a wannabe conservative dictator with an anti-gay bigot VP on his coattails. “Like all of our projects, the film takes a look at the state of the world through an LGBTQ lens,” Tracy explains. “My hope is that it inspires audiences to consider what, if anything, any of us would or will do to stop the insanity.” Many of the actors in Snowflake appear in HISTORY in supporting roles. The first two seasons of HISTORY are available worldwide on YouTube (www.youtube.com/necessaryoutlet) and Vimeo (www. vimeo.com/necessaryoutlet). All six episodes of season three (“Bad Thoughts”, “Good Gay Sons”, “Liar”, “Confrontation”, “Advocate” and “Companion”) will premiere on Youtube and Vimeo on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. INDESIGN A DIFFERENT KIND OF MODERNISM BY DANN FOLEY
February is Modernism month here in Palm Springs once again. It is a time that the world arrives in our unique hamlet to celebrate everything mid-century. By now I am willing to bet that most, if not all of our readers know at least something of what mid-century is when they see it. Some mention the butterfly roof, while others talk about furniture styles or paint colors and patterns. They are all good examples, if not obvious choices. What I hope to do this month for devotees of The Standard Magazine is the same thing I do for my design clients every day. I want to take what you think a period style is and show just how much bigger it can really be. Midcentury design is so much more than the elements I mentioned earlier. In fact, let’s start with using a new term to describe the bigger picture of the period…Modernist. By using the term modernist, I am suggesting more than a style, it is a mind-set, a way of approaching design and lifestyle that goes beyond architecture and decorating and way beyond the borders of Palm Springs, as well. The movement was a global expression. In each country and in each region, it was interpreted and executed in different ways. The influences may have been similar but cultural traditions and subjects gave each their own unique air and manner. Our location in Southern California and our world-class persona have always afforded our community a certain cache. The overall influence is what we commonly know as “midcentury” design but, it also includes an amalgam of other cultures and influences. The Mexican Modernist Movement of the 50’s and 60’s offered its own prescription for stylish modern living, while incorporating their own traditional motivations. In architecture, design and art the Modernist movement of Mexico relied on imagery and elements from the past. Those influences are now being seen as part of a bigger picture and larger conversation about midcentury design. Luminaries like Diego Rivera, Ruffino Tamayo and Frida Kahlo (wife of Diego Rivera ) are internationally celebrated artists and muralists of the time (and today) who used the working-class
16 THESTANDARDPS.COM
they possessed one of the largest collections in the United States of Mexican Modernist Movement paintings. Through their galleries in Beverly Hills and Palm Springs they collected and sold all of the greatest artists of the period. In 1997 the family donated over 2,000 works from their collection to the Los Angeles Museum of Art, making its collection the largest in the country.
Mexican people as their inspiration for some of the most beautiful portraits expressed in a modern artist vernacular. Architects like Luis Barragan still influence designers and architects alike, today. His influences were the European Modernists and he even visited Le Corbusier to discuss modern design. My point is that our incredibly rich valley has an equally rich history of influences and our close relationship, both physically and spiritually with Mexico is another vocabulary in the larger conversation of midcentury style. Color, texture, pattern and materials have all been freely shared between our cultures and continue to enliven our experience of the modernist lifestyle. Of course, I would not be me, if I didn’t offer my readers some examples of Mexican Modernist opportunities right here in Palm Springs. While going from lecture, to tour, to party during Modernism’s 10 day “week” consider some of these local sources for Mexican Modernist art and objet d’art. • If you want the experience and history first, try the Palm Springs Art Museum. It not only sits at the center of the Modernism Week Camp, it also happens to have important examples of Mexican Modernist Art, including Diego Rivera, Francisco Luna, Matta and others. • If history is your thing, a search for the Lewin-FamilyCollection, is a treasure trove of art and artists of the period. It just so happens that the family not only lived in Palm Springs but,
• If owning a piece of Mexican Modernist movement art is more to your liking, try the plethora of resale stores in Palm Springs and simply ask if, “they have any Mexican modernist art?” I suggest shops like Flow Modern and Stewart Galleries. And be sure to check out the Modernism Show & Sale at the convention center during Modernism Week. Finally, if you want a totally immersive experience into Mexican Modernist style, stay tuned for the imminent opening of the new restaurant & bar, Tac/Quila. Located in uptown Palm Springs and directly opposite the soon to be open Andaz hotel, the restaurant is the brain child of husband & wife restauranteurs Mark & Liz Ostoich of the famed, Farm restaurant, also in Palm Springs. Designed by the Palm Springs based, award winning firm of Foley & Stinnette (yes, I am that Foley), the style is based on Mexican Modernist style with original art from the period and current works in the style. Tac/ Quila is designed both decoratively and from a food perspective that will give diners the experience of truly elevated surroundings and cuisine (and the best tequila’s) for those seeking a unique and luxurious Mexican modernist experience. I promise more information as it comes available and an exclusive sneak peek of the interiors to The Standard readers only! Live Well! BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
“Ready or not, here I come!” Hear that, and if you hadn’t hidden by then, hadn’t found a secret spot, you had a real chance of losing at Hide & Seek. Get out of sight, though, and you might’ve managed to sneak back home, ready to play another game. As in the memoir “Hiding Out” by Tina Alexis Allen, that game could last for decades. Growing up, Christina Worthington knew her father hated her. Her twelve siblings knew it, too, and they reminded her of it often: she was the youngest, her mother’s “lucky thirteen” and the victim of much of her father’s wrath. Starting at about the age of nine, Tina was also the victim of sexual abuse from two of her then-adult brothers. But she never told anyone about it. Instead, she acted out at school until the nuns were at their wits’ end and her “saint” of a mother was exasperated. At age eleven, a younger teacher finally took Tina under her wing – and into her bed. Two years later, by the time her teacher-lover sent her away, Tina knew she was more attracted to girls than to boys. By her mid-teens, she had a college-age girlfriend who lived near her parents’ Washington D.C.-area house, from which she managed to mostly stay away; there was more comfort in the girlfriend’s apartment than there was at her childhood home, where hiding her real self was necessary. But no one can hide forever. When her father invited her and her girlfriend to lunch one day, Tina was guarded – and rightfully so, because he figured out her secret and she couldn’t deny. Then he revealed a shocker of his own: he was gay, too. Within weeks, Tina went from hated daughter to favorite; from ignored to invitee to her father’s dinners and clubs. They agreed to keep one another’s secrets from the rest of the family, partying, drinking, and doing drugs until the stress of it all bubbled over, Tina couldn’t take the lies anymore, and her lips spilled the truth. Years later, there was one last secret… Memoirs, by their very nature, are generally focused inwardly, to a greater or lesser degree. Count “Hiding Out” on the latter side. Starting with a raucous anecdote of sibling rivalry before Christmas Mass, you’re in for more than a look-at-me memoir. This is, in fact, a whole-family tale in which author Tina Alexis Allen puts the focus mainly on her parents, with sibs ringing the action as needed. Using that as a base, tales eke out tantalizingly slowly over the course of this book, and some are shocking, told so casually that you’ll get a “Wait. What?” backlash. Don’t be surprised if you read the occasional
sentence twice, in disbelief. Add a tight window of time and a deep unsubstantiated-rumortype mystery that feels like a character unto itself, and you’ve got a compulsively readable book that’s, at its close, very unique. If a memoir like “Hiding Out” is what you want for a long winter’s night, then get ready. “Hiding Out: A Memoir of Drugs, Deception, and Double Lives” by Tina Alexis Allen c.2018, Dey St. Books $16.99 / $21.00 Canada 288 pages

Fans will have a chance to attend a series of panels on a variety of topics, workshops, charity events, parties, a red-carpet soiree as well as a three-day film festival. Bringing their “A” game, Ashley Arnold and Danielle Jablonski the masterminds behind the hugely popular convention - are not just shaking things up this year, they are changing the game too. The duo is decidedly cranking up the volume on ClexaCon’s mission to push forth its enduring message of diversity, equality and inclusion of LGBTQ+ women in entertainment at various levels of the industry. Putting an extra laser-focus this April on the importance of education and academics, ClexaCon strives to empower and inspire
more LGBTQ+ women to get involved in content creation while simultaneously embolden allies to improve representation for LGBTQ+ characters in their creative work. Impressively drawing some 4,000+ attendees from over 40 countries last year, ClexaCon is on track for another impressive year. As we keep witnessing the proliferation of the #RepresentationMatters hashtag across social media platforms, the message is clear: we’re in desperate need of more diverse voices. This is why the Con continues to provide educational resources for the community to aid in the push for better representation. Its goal is to teach and motivate more LGBTQ+ women to participate in creating the stories that actually reflect America’s evolving cultural landscape. LGBTQ representation on television in 2018 hit a record high this year, according to GLAAD’s annual TV diversity report. Sadly, the same can’t be said about its Hollywood counterpart. The GLAAD report found that filmmakers and producers miserably failed to include LGBTQ+ characters in their work.

success of shows like Pose, Supergirl, Black Lightning, Adventure Time, Vida and One Day At A Time – all featuring inclusive storylines denotes a clear audience demand and pressing interest for new and diverse story angles.” To that end, ClexaCon is proud to be an active community collaborator teaming up with some of the top industry institutions and LGBTQ+ players in Arts & Entertainment.
“While we’ve made considerable strides in moving the needle culturally, there’s still not enough queer women creating content,” say Danielle Jablonski, “we need to counter the roadblocks Hollywood continues to put in front of us and provide more avenues to educate and teach the next generation of LGBTQ+ women about how to tell their stories and get their content out to the world”.
SAG-AFTRA, YouTube Space L.A., Dash Production, Tello Films, Outfest and UNLV, are all on track with ClexaCon’s mission to act as a catalyst for change and work to advance professional achievement for LGBTQ+ women working in all areas of film, Television, video, digital streaming platforms and other screen-based media. Remaining at the forefront of the fight to put queer female stories front and center, ClexaCon will kick-off the 5-day convention on April 11 with a creative new concept: a one-day event with two different Labs respectively filled with panels, workshops and networking.

Strengthening its philanthropic values, this year’s ClexaCon Cocktails for Change and Fun Run will be benefiting The Visibility Fund – a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting LGBTQ content creators. “Advocacy is a powerful lever for real impact,” comments Ashley Arnold, “we’re honored to be giving back this year to a community partner like The Visibility Fund that shares our voice and stands for our mission.” ClexaCon might represent different things for everyone, yet the one common thread for all remains its unique ability to bind us all together as one big family and organically impart a sense of solidarity and empowerment. At its core it stands as an international convention that fundamentally exists to remind LGBTQ+ women, as Commander Lexa would say, that “your fight is not over.” For More Information go to: www.Clexacon.com

CHAKA KHAN THE QUEEN OF FUNK RETURNS WITH THE NEW ALBUM ‘HELLO HAPPINESS’ BY MARTHA TANG
Chaka Khan The Queen of Funk returns with the new album ‘Hello Happiness’ - Her first in twelve years featuring the title track and new single. Her new album Hello Happiness will be released on February 15th via Diary Records / Island Records, the new label formed by Major Lazer founder and Grammy-nominated producer Switch with artist/songwriter Sarah Ruba Taylor. Hello Happiness is an album which sets Chaka Khan’s timeless vocal to an empowering collection of songs with cutting-edge production. With an eye on the future and a respect for the past, Chaka Khan has delivered an album with the contemporary edge to entice newcomers to her world-class talent and the quality to excite long-term fans. That’s exactly what the title track and new single, Hello Happiness achieves. A tribute to the life-affirming power of music, it combines the sass of ‘I’m Every Woman’ with the invention of ‘I Feel For You’ while also feeling precisely in tune with the current zeitgeist. The strength of the single hints at the quality of the rest of the album. The soaring ‘Like A Lady’ feels like Switch has been teleported back to the great late ‘70s New York disco scene, while Chaka rolls back the years with one of the most powerful performances of her career. That’s something she also demonstrates with the swaggering strut of the sultry R&B anthem ‘Too Hot’. ‘Isn’t That Enough’ and particularly ‘Don’t Cha Know’ find her embracing bold new elements to her sound, while the laidback, minimalist groove of ‘Ladylike’ gives her the space to prove that her vocal has clearly grown in stature over the years. Chaka Khan is one of the world’s most gifted and celebrated musicians. A songwriter, actor, author, philanthropist, entrepreneur

and activist, Chaka has influenced generations of recording artists. After forty years in music, ‘Hello Happiness’ celebrates a lifetime in music and proves that Chaka Khan is as inspiring as ever. ‘Hello Happiness’ is now available to pre-order from ChakaKhan.lnk.to/HelloHappinessPR with ‘Like Sugar’ and the title track both provided as instant downloads. It will be released on vinyl, digital, CD and cassette.
GIRLPOOL’S “WHAT CHAOS IS IMAGINARY”, A COMPELLING RECORD OF TRANSITION AND TRIUMPH The music Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad release as Girlpool occupies a transient space. Their constant evolution makes it perfectly impossible to articulate exactly where their project falls within the contemporary musical canon; this is one of the many reasons Girlpool’s music is so captivating. Never before has a group’s maturation been so transparently attached to the maturation of its members. This is due in large part to the fact that Girlpool came into existence exactly when Girlpool was supposed to come into existence: at the most prolific stage of the digital revolution. Both online and in the flesh, Tividad and Tucker practice radical openness to the point where it may even engender discomfort; this is exactly the point where it becomes clear why theirs’ is such a special project: they accept the possibility of discomfort-Chaos-and show you how to figure out why you might feel it. This is achieved through their ability to empathize as best friends and partners in creation, with the intention of making music that provokes. They met in November of 2013, and released their self-titled EP just 3 months later. Both were playing in multiple bands at the time. Harmony was 18. Cleo was 17. The growth they have fostered in one another over the years explains the project’s disparate discography; each record is a photograph of Girlpool, growing over time. Their roots are a certain shade of punkorganized chaos dressed as earworms. “Where You Sink,” one of the first singles off their upcoming record, What Chaos Is Imaginary, gives you an idea of how much things have changed since 2014. Their solo work consistently breathes new life into Girlpool.
The two have since become comfortable with the process being more independent, more fluid. They both take part in the production and arrangement of the music, but they’ve strayed from beginning hand in hand in every instance. They connect somewhere along the way, working together when it feels right. Discussing the new process, Harmony says, “It’s helped me find validity in parts of my writing I found to be unapproachable. I thought my stream-of-consciousness was unsophisticated.” There’s probably a great pun available re: shedding self-consciousness to release a more sophisticated stream-of-consciousness. In any case, What Chaos is Imaginary-the record and the song-is what the stream looks like when self-consciousness is shed. Where Harmony embraces chaos, Cleo organizes it. “It’s hard for me to feel completion without achieving a vision that I have. I’ll imagine the kind of climate I want to create inside a song,” says Cleo of his process. “Once I fall in love with the direction, it’s getting there that can take time.” Finishing a song may take time and even prove to be difficult for him at times, but the product is invariably polished. Considering the near-perfect balance in the songs on What Chaos is Imaginary, their dynamic makes sense. “It took a really long time to record this record. It feels like a photograph of a very transitional time.” It’s hard to imagine what might follow What Chaos is Imaginary. Girlpool’s growth has a steady momentum forward, towards something greater with every stride that they take. By the time the record comes out, they’ll be far from here, wherever here is. whatchaosisimaginary.com | facebook.com/girlpoool Twitter @girlpool | Instagram @girlpoool

PSP FOCUS WALK OF THE STARS PALM SPRINGS TO HONOR LEGENDARY INTERIOR DESIGNERS; STEVE CHASE AND ARTHUR ELROD Walk of the Stars Palm Springs will honor legendary Interior Designer and Humanitarian Steve Chase and luminary Interior Designer Arthur Elrod with stars on the Walk of the Stars Palm Springs. The star dedication for Steve Chase will take place on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 4:30 p.m. at 101 N. Museum Way in front of Palm Springs Art Museum. Desert AIDS Project, The Living Desert, and Palm Springs Art Museum will be honoring Steve Chase at the star dedication ceremony. Arthur Elrod’s star unveiling will be on Friday, February 15, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at 300 S. Palm Canyon Drive. Modernism Week will sponsor Arthur Elrod’s star. Both dedications are open to the public.
Steve Chase “I am pleased Steve Chase is being recognized for his outstanding contributions to Palm Springs design and for his humanitarian legacy.” said Nona Watson, CEO Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce. When Steve Chase became involved with Desert AIDS Project (D.A.P.) – whose board he also sat – he applied his creative talent to soften the roughness of the organization’s early warehouse district location. The result was a comfortable environment for D.A.P. clients as they faced their mortality with an HIV/AIDS diagnosis. From a humanitarian perspective, Chase reached out to celebrity friends and clients to encourage their participation and support of D.A.P.’s mission in the community. “He had the extraordinary courage to get out of the house, take meetings, and spend time shopping with and for his clients, many of whom were deeply moved by his spirit.” Said David Brinkman, CEO of D.A.P. who will be one of the speakers at Chase’s star dedication ceremony. In 1967 desert interior designer Arthur Elrod recruited Steve Chase and it was there Katherine Hough, Chief Curator for Palm Springs Art Museum and Chase first began their 2 decades-long

collaboration. After Chase’s death in 1994, the museum received 132 works of art from Chase’s collection as well as $1.5 million from Chase’s estate. Because of his generosity, Palm Springs Art Museum was able to expand with a third floor to its Palm Springs facility. The Steve Chase Art Wing and Education Center was dedicated in November 1996. “His collection launched us into a different realm, quality- and quantity-wise. It brought us into a new era. That’s when people — donors, other collectors — started taking us seriously.” says Hough. For more information, contact nwatson@pschamber.org or call the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce at (760) 325-1577.
Arthur Elrod “Arthur Elrod was responsible for the interior designs of many of the most celebrated Palm Springs mid-century modern homes, and it is our honor to celebrate his work with a star on the Walk of the Stars.” said Nona Watson, CEO Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce. “After dedicating many stars for notable architects, it is fitting to acknowledge the interior designer of many of these iconic Mid-Century Modern architect’s work. “This star dedication brings full-circle the contribution of interior design to the inherent style that has become synonymous with Palm Springs. For the star to be located in front of The Palm Springs Art Museum’s Architecture and Design Center is further tribute to Arthur’s enduring style.” said Gary Johns, Secretary Board of Directors, Modernism Week and star dedication event captain. Considered the most successful interior designer between the mid-1950s through his untimely death in 1974 from a car accident, Arthur Elrod was responsible for bringing a relaxed, sophisticated style to Palm Springs. Elrod donated art and contributed to several civic and social activities in Palm Springs including contributing funds to the very first animal shelter.

HOW TO CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY BY LEE LYNCH
Valentine’s Day is one of those do-it-yourself celebrations. There are no parades or feasts or family gatherings. When I was single, I could always count on a card from my mother and, needless to say, would send one to her. Commerce has no respect for the single, however, and for a month every year, the U.S turns red and pink. I’m not sure if I should thank Cupid or St. Valentine or, perhaps, my late Catholic mother, but at last I can say that, goddess willing and the river don’t rise, I won’t be single again for the rest of my life. Which leaves me with the challenge of coming up with unique ways to celebrate the day for about thirty more years.
32 THESTANDARDPS.COM
Not that my sweetheart expects this—she’d be content with a card and a kiss and lots of laughter thrown in. No, I have a need to prove my love year after year with some small extraordinary offering. She does that year-round. Just today, on our monthly anniversary, she presented me with the gift of all gifts. My sweetheart gave me— you’re not going to believe how incredible she is—a Golden Snitch fidget spinner. “I saw (author) Nell Stark with one,” explained my sweetheart, “and I had to get it for you.” All my other spinners pale before its silent and graceful niftiness.
In turn, I gave my sweetheart a gift I held back from the winter holidays: a boat and lighthouse tea light candleholder. Which I gleaned from the free table at our community clubhouse. Yes, we do celebrate our anniversary every month and have for going on twelve years. Doesn’t every couple? We don’t always mark the date with gifts. Sometimes it’s a handmade card, a note, a walk on the beach. That leaves me with the question: what can I come up with to make Valentine’s Day 2019 special? It goes without saying that some years I have decorated effusively. The Dollar Store is helpful with that when we’re flush. This year I’ll be recycling whatever has survived the years: the lights, balloons, ceiling decorations, banners, window clings, cardboard cutouts, yard signs, door decorations, garlands. I’ve been known to get kind of obnoxious. Before the diets, I was able to reach directly back to my childhood. My father always gave my mother a regulation red clothcovered, heart-shaped box of assorted candies, invariably from Fanny Farmer’s, which was big at that time. I remember the shop near my subway stop—was it 42nd Street and 6th Avenue? The glorious smells, the enticing boxes… In any case, though I refrain out of kindness, the giving of the red heart of candies will always mean Valentine’s Day to me. For my part, it was all about the cards when I was a kid. You sat at the kitchen table and cut out children’s cards by the dozens. They were miniatures and I was disappointed that they didn’t fold. This was before Disney and other franchises took over the industry. The scissors I used were heavy and large, probably from my mother’s sewing basket. It was awkward, cutting on the dotted lines with little girl hands. Then you took an actual wooden pencil, hoping for soft lead, sharpened it and wrote the name of every kid in the apartment building, signed your own, and left the cards at their doors. So of course, I did that to my sweetheart one year. Bought a package of kid cards and stuck them all over the house. She’s such a sport. Or the year of the Valentine’s Day stickers. Stuck on mirrors, inside the refrigerator, on the front door, the back door, the garage, her pillow, her clothes, her car. If we hadn’t moved, she’d still be finding them. We’ve toasted by candlelight, just the two of us, at restaurants. She likes me to buy her a drink at the bar. We’ve revisited special places, like the National Park where we exchanged rings after signing domestic partnership papers. Oh, and the stuffed animals, ever in their small basket
demonstrating my overenthusiasm. Had she told me she wasn’t a stuffed animal sort of gal? Yes, she had, but I couldn’t help myself, the things were so sweet. We have a gift card to a favorite restaurant this year. We’re planning to get a bite to eat. I’ll order her a pretty glass of Prosecco. She’ll wear her red sweater, black slacks and a shiny pair of earrings. I’ll dress up with my good jeans, a button-down shirt and, this being the Pacific Northwest, a rain jacket. But I have to give the day my own grateful, adoring, loving touch. Something original that I’ve never done before. Probably something a little bit annoying, but meant well. It can’t cost money or calories, so there go the chocolates and diamond ring and flowers. Time is getting short. How about a love letter? I could title it “How to Celebrate Valentine’s Day.”

WELLNESS
FIT TO CRUISE BY JILL LANGHAM
It’s already the second month of 2019 and I’m pleased to say that the dark energies of 2018 appear to have stayed there and I for one am extremely grateful. I’ve just returned from a five-day Caribbean cruise hosted by WOD on the Waves. WOD stands for Workout of the Day. Its the world’s first fitness cruise where you can break out of the box and celebrate all of your blood, sweat and tears. Train hard and party harder with some of the fittest athletes on earth. Well, that’s what their ads say, anyway!
This cruise had not been on my 2019 agenda but rather became available to me through my absolutely amazing nephew, Andrew, who’s ex-boyfriend and still B.F.F., had access to it from Instagram. Devin has over 50,000 followers on Instagram and was contacted by WOD offering him a bank of rooms in exchange for advertising. He then extended his offer to Andrew who in turn offered it to me.
I’d like to say that I was in top form but as I’ve been reporting my level of fitness took a big hit after I attempted to alleviate my food allergies by doing intermittent fasting.
It took me about a second to accept his generosity because I will be on the Atlantis cruise when this month’s edition of The Standard is released and wanted to be in better shape for it. I figured this was the perfect way to achieve my goal and perhaps get hired on WOD’s next cruise! Hey, they say to dream big, right? And, why not. I hoped that your Dancing Queen would stand out amongst the other guests and win over some new friends.
So rather than being in tip top shape, I got on board the Royal Caribbean ship in Miami, feeling a bit out of sorts. After a week of rain and overcast skies in Palm Springs, my sinuses were still a bit wonky and I somehow ended up with a slight tummy problem that left me feeling less than 100%. But, I had faith that I was going to use the 5-day cruise to regenerate my body. Happily my mind and spirit were in good standing.
So, off I went on this new adventure. I was also intrigued by the fact that it was not a gay cruise and that I would be surrounded by people with fitness as a focus, something that I have never been a part of before. To be honest up until the very recent past, I had always been led by my heart and maybe my hormones! If those 2 boxes got ticked off I would dive right into a relationship never considering that the person and I had little to nothing else in common. So being a part
34 THESTANDARDPS.COM
of a fitness cruise at least gave me a leg up, so to speak. Like Atlantis, WOD touted that they liked to party and had themed parties like Toga & 80’s night, so I packed just a few of my outfits and headed out. If all else failed I knew I could probably outdance anyone on the boat and was leaving the rest up to destiny. Well, Destiny was not on my side but to be honest there was a rather large bodybuilder, (think of a Caucasian Refrigerator Perry) who fancied me from the first second he saw me. It was rather funny to me because he was 4 times my size and I’m sure as people go a nice fella, but definitely not my type. At the same time he was the only guy who seemed to notice me, as I was about 30-40 years older than the average girl on board! Oh well, I tried! So, the trend for fitness is what I expected. It’s all about Crossfit and Surge, along with new fangled varieties of many of the classic exercises I learned 40+ years ago. I saw more women with incredible shoulders that I know they worked very hard for, but I pray will not cause them problems
years from now. Maybe the trend then will be to have shoulder replacements along with knee replacements. I say this because I watched so many people using bad form when it came to Crossfit activities, squats and walking lunges and overhead presses. It also scared me to know how many of these kids are on heavy steroids, growth hormone, fat burners and energy drinks to achieve the body of today only to suffer the consequences of tomorrow. Any natural hormone package that they were born with will be knocked out of the park and I predict that the days of Andropause and Menopause will be occurring at younger and younger ages! But, hey that’s just me! Happy International Bear Convergence, Steve Chase, Modernism and Valentines Day! One and all! All my Best, XOXO Jill, Your Dancing Queen

TRANSCENDENCE
TRAINING GROUNDS BY CHRISTINA VRONAY RUGGLES
To start, I just want to make the point that we’re roughly 2 years behind my transition. So, hop back about 2 years from you reading this, and you’ll be in the moment of my life I’m writing about. Fascinating, isn’t it? I’m also about to admit to something a little terrible. And I’m going to ask that you don’t hate me for it. You see I’ve only ever orbited around modernism week. I’ve never, you know, actually participated. I’m not even sure how to participate. My general assumption was that, after a glance at my checking account, I was too poor. That’s my feeling about most of Palm Springs to be honest. A glance at my Chase Banking mobile app, and the realization that I might just not be the target audience. Feeling poor and being able to confirm that fact with a handheld computer within seconds is pretty modern though; if you ask me. Modernism week does seem to have some cool stuff going on, at least as an onlooker. Lots of nice, bright colors. That was always a nice thing about Palm Springs. Despite the desert climate’s hostility to colorful inhabitants, Palm Springs, as a city, never let that stop it from being full of bright, beautiful colors.
40 THESTANDARDPS.COM
On topic, February 14th is the beginning of Modernism week this year, and the beginning of me formally trying to be Christina out in public, with ya know, other strangers involved in the experience. Wasn’t sure I was Christina yet to others, but I had the name and stuff bouncing around. February 14th was, coincidentally, also the date of the 1st transgender support group meeting I went to in this, the modern era, of Christina. So, as you do modernism week things, like view pretty houses, and watch your fellow gays coo in awe and delight at the art and existence around you, pour one out for this homie, will ya? That 1st one back was almost as rough as the 1st one I ever did. It reminded me of how much of an invader I felt like. How much I was different from those I shared the room with, different experiences, different lives. I’ll admit to still grappling with being transgender at this date, February 14th 2017. It was scary. Terrifying. It meant so much. I didn’t want to acknowledge it, because it meant that my life was going to need a vigorous upheaval. As much as I was an interloper entering that room. I left knowing
I was real, in some scary way. I left hopeful. I left knowing a few things, primarily that I was, in fact, you know, a woman. Despite the, you know, penis. There was at least 1 other young woman there, Emma, who was beautiful and confident, and left me wanting to come back for more to soak in more of her cool; her radiance. Maybe, I thought, if I breathed in the air she did, I would be cool and confident and beautiful and transgender, the way she was and not ashamed. Oh god, maybe I wouldn’t be ashamed of being this way. Maybe I’d feel like I do, in fact, own a space on planet Earth. Thanks Emma! She’s a reoccurring character, I promise, and a real human being. Emma, if you ever do read this, and you do know that this is in fact you, I have something to tell you. I’m really trying to stay true to the facts here. I’m not lying about how I felt, about how I feel. Having said that spiel, I’m overjoyed I never, ever have to talk to you again. Or see you again. Or breathe in your air or be tainted by your radiance. Infected with your cool. Good, delightful riddance. Ah yes, dear reader, the drama. It begins! Palm Springs based drama! Drama you’ll be able to read and be able to say “Oh yes, I’ve been in that restaurant”! I’ve had drama in the past before, but not like this! I’m excited. Now we’re gonna get to sex and drugs and substance abuse and crying in the shower at 3pm on a Wednesday. Onwards, to showing up to a mid-term hungover, onwards to degeneracy! To good times! To a happy ending stretching out from then to the very moment I’m writing this in! I’m really excited for this little era of my existence, because it’s MY era. And 2 years ago, it all kinda just started happening and it’s weird that life just happens. Ok, for realsies, on topic this time. Besides me jealously staring at some poor woman and learning where to maybe get some therapy from someone, you know, in the know on this whole gender-as-a-problem thing, the meeting was uneventful. Life happens in small increments. And my writing happens in even smaller ones! All these events happened to me in bits and pieces. And I’m giving you the manicured crumbs. What a cycle. I’ll crown this method, the horse and sparrow theory of entertainment. Or the trickle-down theory of second-hand living. “But” you may cry out “Give us the juicy bits now, not all this filler!” Okay, but if I just wrote out all the interesting stuff that happened to me over the past 2 years, I really wouldn’t have much a job here anymore. So, for now, I’ll trickle down the good times to you. Though, to be perfectly fair, I’ve never had too many problems with getting trickled upon.
