LGBTQ TRAVEL IN 2019 2019 might just be the queerest year ever in travel. How come? One word: Stonewall. The New York City bar uprising that kicked off the modern LGBTQ-rights movement turns 50 in June and you better believe nearly every Pride event worldwide will be celebrating, big time. Not that Pride events are the only reason to pack our bags.
From gorgeous beach destinations to dynamic urban experiences, LGBTQ travelers are always looking for that next “new” place to visit. But the queer community still has some old standbys, places that are accepting and hold a special place in its collective heart. Here are the top 20 places that should be on the radar for queer travelers in 2019.
MONTREAL, CANADA In addition to being perhaps one of the most European cities in North America, Montreal hosts one of the largest Pride events in the world. Why spend the money and the time to fly over to Paris, when there’s a lovely alternative that’s less than a two-hour flight from most of the East Coast?
MYANMAR This Southeast Asian gem has only opened up to the rest of the world in the last decade. The country is actively courting tourists in areas, and the American dollar goes extremely far here. While the country’s laws (like many others in Asia) are not friendly to LGBT citizens, more queer visitors are exploring the country’s cities and religious sites and have reported hospitality and acceptance in tourist areas. NEW YORK CITY New York is always a queer travelers’ hotspot, but 2019 looks to be something special, with the city’s hosting of World Pride 2019 as well as recognizing the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. Visitors can party, see the sights and also reflect on how far we’ve come and what work we still have to do.

BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC While Prague has been hot for many years, gay travelers are also discovering the Czech Republic’s second largest city and the fantastic surrounding Moravian countryside. There is a small town feel to the city, which is sometimes called the country’s Biggest Village. Visitors here enjoy the blend of ancient and modern architecture.
THAILAND From the urban excitement of Bangkok to the breathtaking beaches of Phuket to the amazing religious architecture of Chiang Mai, there’s an endless variety to see in this Southeast Asian country. Queer travelers have been warmly welcomed here for many years, and it’s inexpensive to get around and explore. Throw in cheap massages and what more can you want?
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS Hang out next summer at Chicago’s lovely Hollywood Beach, also called the “gay beach” in Edgewater. Chicago has a seemingly endless supply of gorgeous men, and you’ll find many of them here all summer long, not covering up any more than necessary. Plus, this Midwestern favorite is everything an American city aspires to be with great cuisine, important architecture, a friendly vibe, and impressive lodging to boot.
TEL AVIV, ISRAEL Queer visitors to this urban mecca come back year after year for its famously sunny weather, miles of great beaches, and gay-friendly vibe. In fact, some people even describe this second largest city in Israel as the gayest city on the planet. Tel Aviv is full of great museums, interesting architecture, hip restaurants and plenty of clubs.
SITGES, SPAIN While Barcelona is on many best-of lists one of the favorite new queer destinations is this idyllic beach town located about 25 miles southwest of the Catalan giant. Sitges has long been an artistic hangout, and LGBTQ travelers will also enjoy the thriving nightlife scene here.

AUSTIN, TEXAS Locals in Austin promote the concept of “Keep Austin Weird”— you’ll even see it on shirts and hats. So LGBTQ travelers will find a naturally welcoming place here. Austin is known worldwide for great live music, and its restaurant scene gets better every year. In addition to being an urban paradise, there is plenty of nature close by, so most anyone will find something to love here.
ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA This magical North Carolina city is set amidst the state’s western mountains and is perhaps most famous for the nearby Biltmore Estate. But there is a vibrant and active LGBTQ community here, and visitors will enjoy this progressive town’s college vibe, extensive art scene and abundant natural beauty.

PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO While there’s really no bad time to visit this Mexican city, perched on a graceful bay, queer travelers seem to take it over each year from October through May, when temperatures across much of the U.S. are colder. Hardly a month or two pass by without a major annual event, from Pride to New Year’s to the White Party.
TOKYO, JAPAN This city is looking forward to hosting the 2020 Olympics, and queer travelers can get a head start on experiencing the city’s vibrancy in 2019. This densely populated metro area is more accepting of LGBTQ citizens than some expect, and you’ll find the requisite bars, saunas, dance clubs and more. Check out the new Toyosu Fish Market, which recently replaced the venerable Tsukiji market, which had to close due to Olympic construction. The new market is almost twice the size of the old one.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA The City by the Bay has long been a mecca for gay travelers, and it continues to be an important global destination for LGBTQ tourists. From the nightlife in the Castro to the views around every corner to a thousand magical spots to discover, like the Palace of Fine Arts (pictured), there’s something for everyone in your gay gaggle.
MEXICO CITY, MEXICO Queer equality has been a reality in much of Mexico for years, and gay travelers will find a vibrant, active community in the country’s capital city. The bar scene here is fantastic, and the enormous metro area offers something for everyone, with world-class museums, great food and plenty of outside options, too.
LONDON, ENGLAND London is a natural magnet for queer citizens in the United Kingdom and across Europe. It offers a fantastic array of attractions, along with plenty of history, an art and theater scene beyond compare, and plenty of architectural eye candy, both old and new.
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK This accepting city will be hosting World Pride and the EuroGames in 2021, so get a head start on your friends by checking out the Danish capital in 2019.Denmark was the world’s first country to recognize same-sex partnerships, in 1989, and the nation remains one of the most queer-friendly places you’ll find today.

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND Zurich, located on the picturesque shores of Lake Zurich, may bring to mind banking and finance, but the largest city in Switzerland also boasts convenient access to the Alps, beautiful waterfront promenades, and a liberal mindset that has resulted in a vibrant gay and lesbian scene. Come for the annual Pink Apple Film Festival or the city’s gay Angel parties, which happen four times per year.
MYKONOS, GREECE You certainly can’t go wrong with traveling to a Greek island. But this very tolerant island continues to hold a special place in the hearts of queer travelers, thanks to its turquoise waters, wellpreserved architecture, and fantastic weather. Head to the beaches on a sunny day, and you’ll find a plethora of gay and lesbian sunbathers. HONG KONG Hong Kong often walks a tightrope between Chinese and Western values, and its past treatment of LGBTQ people has not been good. But change is in the air here, and the city was recently awarded the 2022 Gay Games, giving the local queer community something exciting to build around.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA The relationship between the gay community and not-queer-enough Vegas has always been somewhat of a bad romance. Dang, we just totally gave away our reason for including Sin City on this list. Yup, Lady Gaga will spend the bulk of 2019 parked at the Park Theater boasting not one, but two shows (“Enigma” and “Jazz and Piano”) right in the heart of the Strip and thus securing the city’s place as a must-visit destination for queers in the coming year. Also playing the Park in 2019? Britney and Cher. It doesn’t get any gayer.

BEACH PLEASE THE MOST LGBTQ-FRIENDLY ISLANDS BY MALCOLM TROYER
Looking for sun, sand and diversity? Then you should give any these gay-friendly islands a try. These island destinations promise relaxed attitudes and buzzy bars, beaches and nightclubs. So pack your sunscreen and sunglasses and head to any one of these islands and have great time. ARUBA Like its Dutch neighbors, Saba and Curaçao, the popular island of Aruba embraces diversity. Dance the night away at Oranjestad newcomer @7, a vibrant nightclub with five different party areas. LGBTQ-friendly hotel options include Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort or gay-owned Little David Guesthouse.
CUBA Cuba’s gay community has come a long way in recent years. With Raúl Castro’s daughter, Mariela, leading the Cuban National Center for Sex, the country is becoming increasingly more LGBTQ-friendly. Most of Cuba’s gay social scene takes place on the streets. Check out Vedado, Havana’s once mafia-run gay district or Mi Cayito, the unofficial gay beach. CURACAO This teeny island just off the coast of Venezuela doesn’t hold back with its hospitality for gay travelers. “With exceptional gay-friendly hotels and attractions, [Curacao] encourages gay and lesbian travelers to visit the island and experience its ‘live and let live’ atmosphere for themselves,” says the Curacao Tourist Board. Most of the hotels on the island are gay-friendly; Baoase Luxury Resort is a favorite stay for lux-seeking couples. Same-sex marriage is also legal.
GRAND CANARIA, CANARY ISLANDS Carnival is a big draw for LGBTQ travelers, with an incredible Drag Queen festival and a major contest that attracts the hottest gay talent from all over Europe. The gay social scene descends upon Yumbo Centre, a four-story mega shopping and leisure center packed with bars, cafes, restaurants and a large outdoor area for events. Stay nearby at Gay Paso Chico in Playa del Ingles, which is within walking distance of Grand Canaria’s most famous gay beach, Maspalomas, located at Kiosk #7 (aka, The No. 7). IBIZA, SPAIN Ibiza is by far the most popular of Spain’s four Balearic Islands. The small Mediterranean island is infamous for its vibrant nightlife scene. Most of the island’s gay culture assembles on the south end of the island, where clubbing reigns supreme. Head to the terrace at Bar Mona Lisa for cocktails and the occasional celebrity sighting. Then nurse your hangover the next day at Es Cavellet, the gay nudist beach at the southern end of the island.

KEY WEST, FLORIDA Key West is a gay mecca. It was one of the first places in the U.S. to elect an openly gay mayor (Richard A. Heyman in 1983). With its thriving gay nightlife scene, large local LGBTQ population and a number of gay-friendly guesthouses, this destination is all about queer inclusiveness. Check out Island House, a men’s-only, clothing optional property that OUT Traveler called, “The Best Gay Resort In The World.”
MAUI Since the 2013 passing of the Hawaii Marriage Equality Act, Maui has been a popular pick for same-sex destination weddings and honeymoons. For queer travelers in search of sun and surf, check out the weekly beach party at Little Beach in Makena each Sunday for clothing-optional fun. Or plan to visit the first weekend in October for Maui Pride.
MYKONOS, GREECE Mykonos has long been an escape for well-heeled gays. In addition to wild club and beach parties that happen almost every night during high season (July to early September), the island is home to several LGBTQ-friendly hotspots, including Jackie O’s and Kastro. By day, gay sun worshippers flock to Elia Beach.
PHUKET, THAILAND Thailand is a welcoming country for LGBTQ travelers. Phuket has a host of gayfriendly resorts — Mom Tri’s Villa Royale is a favorite — and occasionally hosts dance parties like TropOut. The Patong area, aka “Paradise Plaza” area has a small, but robust party, go-go bar and massage parlor scene.
PUERTO RICO Puerto Rico is often considered the gay-friendlyest island in all of the Caribbean. The nightlife in San Juan is bar none, with most of the LGBTQ scene centering around the popular Condado oceanfront district. Be sure to stop by Circo, a small but hip venue that packs in crowds for dancing, go-go boys and elaborate Drag shows. Same-sex marriage is also legal here, making it a hot spot for destination weddings.
SABA Although this Dutch Antilles island may be tiny and isolated (5 square miles!), it’s one of the Caribbean’s most gay-friendly destinations. Its population of 1,500 welcome LGBTQ travelers, who come primarily for the island’s scuba adventures. Book through gay tour operators Alyson Adventures and Undersea Expeditions. Saba is perfect for gay travelers looking for a low-key alternative to the usual island party atmosphere. TAHITI Famous for its black-sand beaches, the largest island in French Polynesia is welcoming to gay visitors. There are a handful of locations in Papeete that attract gay visitors, including the risqué Mahu District, where strip clubs and drag shows abound. Be sure to stop by The Piano Bar, which combines the best of both worlds into unforgettable performances. Islands.com

THE PRIDE WORLD ACCORDING TO ORBITZ
According to recent data from Orbitz, a long proponent of LGBTQ+ travel and the first online travel company to launch a microsite dedicated to gay and lesbian travel more than a decade ago, hotel searches for Pride weekends have already increased by more than double digits when compared to 2018, along with a significant increase in flight searches and Pride package considerations particularly to New York City. In fact, when asked directly in an online survey, 79 percent of LGBTQ travelers plan to attend this year’s Pride events with a group. Hotels (57 percent) and car shares (54 percent) are the travel accommodations most likely to be booked for Pride celebrations in 2019. “More travelers than ever before will be celebrating love and equality in some of the most gay-friendly cities across the country this year,” said Carey Malloy, Director of Brand Marketing for Orbitz Brand. “With this being a milestone year for Pride, our message to travelers is now is the time to plan your trip while accommodations are in high demand.”

PRIDE TRAVELERS ARE OUT IN THE WORLD From east to west, LGBTQ travelers have visited a range of gayfriendly cities throughout the United States, with San Francisco (13 percent), New York (11 percent) and Chicago (10 percent) ranking as the top three destinations based on a recent survey by Orbitz. Nearly half of respondents confirmed they plan to travel between five and 50 miles for a Pride event in 2019, and 42 percent plan to travel more than 50 miles. Three in four (74 percent) of LGBTQ travelers also said that knowing whether a destination is Pridefriendly impacts their decision on where to travel. “My summers in Provincetown are always the highlight of my year, so naturally I love that P-Town is ranked as the number one Pride-friendly place to travel!” said Miss Richfield 1981, a well-known drag personality for Orbitz. “It is such a joy to see Pride celebrations spreading throughout the United States and internationally; I encourage my fans and queer community to get out and plan a weekend getaway to celebrate Pride with friends, loved ones and fellow LGBTQ travelers.”
CELEBRITY SHOUT-OUT Known as a true LGBT icon, it is no surprise that Ellen DeGeneres topped the list of celebrities that travelers would most like to attend Pride with (31 percent), followed by Lady Gaga (24 percent) and the cast of Netflix’s Queer Eye and the Obamas tied for third (both 15 percent). When asked whom they would like to see as Grand Marshall of this year’s Pride Parade, Ellen DeGeneres, Ru Paul, Barack Obama and Janelle Monáe were the top picks from nearly half of respondents (47 percent). To further spotlight the 2019 Pride celebration, Orbitz will be changing its logo to the rainbow “O” for the month of June. LGBTQ travelers and supporters are encouraged to follow Orbitz on Instagram (@Orbitz) to check out photos, videos and live moments from the Anchorage Pride group’s first-time experience at Miami Beach Pride. Safety should be a top priority for every traveler. Overall, traveling as a LGBTQ traveler isn’t much different than traveling for others, but there are times special considerations should be made. It is important to keep in mind that as a LGBTQ traveler, a destination’s attitude toward the LGBTQ community is an important factor to consider. Experiences for LGBTQ travelers can vary globally, so it is important to have an understanding of where you are traveling, so you can have an enjoyable and safe vacation or business trip.
and Intersex Association (ILGA), there are 72 countries where homosexuality is illegal. (That’s over a third of the world!) In eight of those, homosexuality is punishable by death.
We recognize the need for greater understanding and awareness regarding safety for LGBTQ travelers, and developed the following resources and support to assist LGBTQ travelers with information that will help them feel more comfortable as they plan their travel.

1. According to a survey by the Gay Ad Network, 97% of Gay/Bi Men and 99% of Lesbians chose LGBTQ discrimination as their greatest concern when asked about which social and political issues concerned LGBTQ Travelers the most.
3. According to a report by The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), 32% of LGBTQ travelers feel they are treated differently due to their sexuality when on holiday.
4. Transgender travelers have specific concerns associated with air travel. In a recent study by Community Marketing Inc, 21% of transgender travelers reported disliking air travel due to concerns such as security checks, identification document issues and discrimination. 5. Additionally, 45% of transgender travelers have reported fearing physical or verbal abuse/harassment while traveling.
Following are specific travel tips for LGBTQ travelers. PLANNING The most important step that LGBTQ travelers can take during the planning stages to ensure their safety and comfort on a trip is conducting thorough research on their destination. It is important to understand the cultural, legal and security issues that affect the LGBTQ community in the locations you are visiting. You should also consider your own profile and if that destination is right for you, as well as the sort of experience you want to have in your travels. You do not necessarily have to avoid a location, but you will have to be aware of how you conduct yourself based on the laws and cultural climate of the place you plan to visit. What are some of the cultural considerations to make when researching your destination? In some countries, identifying as LGBTQ may simply be culturally frowned upon. In more conservative societies, shows of affection considered innocent by Western standards, like touching or holding hands, even between heterosexual couples, may be against cultural and religious practices. You should not only research the social norms of the place you are visiting, but also the local laws. In some countries, identifying as LGBTQ is illegal. In these locations, LGBTQ individuals can be barred from entering the country entirely or can be subject to detention or legal action if suspected of engaging in or promoting homosexual activity.
DOCUMENTATION AND ACCOMMODATION When applying for a visa, there are some instances in which a married LGBTQ couple should apply for visas as single individuals rather than as a couple. The cultural and legal climate should be carefully considered throughout your trip planning, including when booking a hotel or resort. Some circumstances may require a LGBTQ couple to reserve a room with two beds, instead of one, in order to remain discreet or
even to avoid legal action, and to bring separate luggage instead of packing belongings in one bag or suitcase. During your travels, let a trusted contact back home know your general itinerary, including anyone you have planned in advance to meet while on your trip. Transgender travelers may face additional scrutiny when departing from and arriving at airports and when navigating the cultural and legal landscape of a different country. When considering a destination, know that some countries may refuse entry to individuals whose documented gender does not reflect their presentation. Understand that cultural attitudes toward and laws regarding transgender people in conservative societies may present an unwelcoming and unsafe environment. Transgender people must make additional considerations when conducting air travel. Security procedures at airports, such as patdowns, increased scrutiny from security personnel and body scanners, can be distressing to transgender people, and there are steps that can be taken to be prepared for airport security protocols. Researching the procedures and necessary documentation for airport security in your home country and in your intended destination is important. SAFETY, SECURITY AND HEALTH If you are traveling with medication, ensure that your medications are kept together in a separate bag in your carry-on. Keep all medications in their original containers and carry an official note of medical authorization from your doctor. In general, staying aware of your surroundings, being mindful of the culture, trying not to stand out as a tourist and disclosing as little personal information as possible is the best course of action for anyone traveling in a new place. It is usually better to stay discreet at all times, even in more accepting areas, to avoid drawing attention to yourself. Additionally, in some places homosexuality is perfectly legal and acceptable, but people may still maintain a low profile even in gay-friendly venues due to cultural stigmas. Those societies may require LGBTQ travelers to use discretion and avoid discussing or displaying their orientation. If you are harassed, remove yourself from the situation as quickly as possible and do not escalate by confronting your harasser. If you are being followed, find a busy establishment to enter. DESTINATIONS THAT ARE UNAPOLOGETICALLY ANTI-GAY
With the previous article in mind, here are a few destinations you might want to think twice about before you plan a trip there. In many of the places on this list, LGBT rights improve every year. But, recognition rarely equals acceptance. In some countries, samesex marriages are recognized and celebrated. But, toleration and acceptance of the LGBT community is far from universal. Being queer is illegal in nearly 80 countries and punishable by death, including some very popular travel destinations. MALAYSIA This tourism driven nation seems quite prosperous and peaceful, but you may want to reconsider stopping at this antigay destination as you travel. Being gay is still criminalized by current laws. Punishments include fines, up to 20 years in prison and even cane whippings. JAMAICA Many will be disappointed to find that this hot vacation spot is actually on the antigay travel list. The beautiful island is one of the

least gay friendly areas in the world. Violence against gay travelers has increased recently, and discriminating laws enforce punishments that include up to 10 years in prison. INDIA Tourist throughout the world flock to India to view its stunning architecture and experience the unique culture, but India has taken some giant leaps backwards in regards to equality in recent years. With violence and imprisonment very real risks, this is not a destination to be out and proud. EGYPT As one of the wonders of the world, you would think Egypt would be a great place to include in gay travel destinations. Unfortunately, being gay is still very taboo in the home of the pyramids. DUBAI This stunning city is quite liberal and progressive. So it may come
as a surprise that, each year, tourists in Dubai are charged with “gay offenses.” Punishments range, but the death penalty is not legally out of the question. This antigay places should be avoided as you travel. PERU Though being gay is not actually illegal, it is best not to be open about orientation in this conservative travel destination. The attitude towards gay people is very intolerant, and gay members of the community are still very much underground. SINGAPORE You might assume that this modern, state of the art city would be open to gay travelers, but the courts have continuously rejected disbanding discriminatory laws. MALDIVES You will be quite disappointed to know that this stunning island vacation destination should be taken off any gay travel lists. There has been violence against gay people trying to enjoy a pleasant vacation in Maldives, and being gay is technically illegal. TANZANIA Tanzania is one of Africa’s top tourist destinations but, if you are gay, you should be aware that this area is not safe. The overwhelming majority of locals consider being gay as taboo, which is probably why it is still a felony offense. BARBADOS Though most gay travelers do not encounter issues here as long as they are conservative, laws from the British colonial era are some of the most severe in the western hemisphere. BAHAMAS Most gay locals here are still very closeted because of the discriminatory attitude. Violent crimes, including murder, are not uncommon. BOTSWANA Though strides have been made against discrimination in this country recently, being gay can still be punished with up to 5 years in prison. The nation is very intolerant towards gay travelers. DOMINICA You may be subject to psychiatric treatment and a stint in prison if you are convicted of being gay in this popular travel destination.
If you are on a cruise and this is one of your port calls, you may want to consider staying on the boat. KENYA This exotic travel destination has a lot to offer by way of culture and adventure. Equality is not a priority in this country, and being gay is punishable with up to 21 years in prison. MOROCCO To this day, people in Morocco are being tried and convicted for being gay. You may face a fine and up to three years in prison. It is best to skip this destination as you are traveling. NIGERIA The death penalty for men, whipping and imprisonment for women, are just a few of the punishments gay people face in the African nation of Nigeria. As of 2013, it is even illegal to join gay clubs and organizations. PALAU Yet another island nation that is prettier on the outside than in. Palau has a national penal code that labels being gay as a. “abominable and detestable crime.” PAPUA NEW GUINEA All in the gay community should avoid this popular travel destination. Being gay is punishable by up to 14 years in prison, and the culture is generally discriminatory. SAMOA This country only labels being a gay man as “illegal.” Though there are many beautiful points of interests, gay tourists could face up to 7 years in prison. SAUDI ARABIA This nation has some pretty shocking punishments for those convicted of being gay. From 100 lashes to public stoning, they are some of the worst in the world. As you consider your next vacation, keep these antigay destinations in mind as places to avoid. BRUNEI Just recently this country has instituted the death penalty. Homosexuality has been illegal in Brunei since the country was a British colony, but the new law, in effect, makes it not just illegal but also punishable by death by stoning.

HOW NOT TO LIVE IN A MUSEUM BY DANN FOLEY
As the title this month suggests, I find too many homes that are so full of collected treasures that the rooms lose a sense of personality and tend to become a museum full of display surfaces. Your home should reflect you, it should tell your story but, like any good story, there needs to be some basic structure. So, how do you collect, enjoy, cherish and display what you love and still have beautiful, comfortable and inviting rooms? Well, it’s not as hard as it sounds. Every month I hope to inspire you with some design advice and easy to follow tips and this month won’t be any different! Simply apply some of my simple tricks for display that you might not have thought about, it will change everything! I have never met a client who didn’t want a photo wall full of pictures of family and travel. It is a great way to enjoy and share those moments. I have also never met a client who wasn’t seemingly terrified of hanging all of those frames “the right way.” I put that last phrase in quotes because I most often do not measure (at all!)

when hanging art. I don’t even get the tape measure out! Unless you are purposefully creating a grid on your wall with the same frame, I want you get creative. Here are my tips for hanging a wall… • Use the floor space in front of the area to be hung to arrange your art and/or photos on the floor. You get a good sense of space and proportion as you prepare to start hanging. • Be playful! Combine both your travel photos with travel treasures. Mix styles and frames to create more visual interest and tell a more engaging story. • Shadowboxes are another way of displaying threedimensional treasures on the wall along with your photos and pictures. • Do not try to space everything evenly, because you don’t have to! It’s about the relationship, the intersection and the
juxtaposition. It’s not about the mathematics. • Your trips and treasures do not have to be displayed in chronological order. Mixing up the items, trips and years can be even more interesting. • Lighting is key. To truly enjoy what you have achieved it must be properly lit. Art lights come in a variety of sizes, styles and types. Explore the possibilities and don’t skimp! So, you have been traveling and you have bringing home things that caught your eye. I want you to love the things that surround you. I never think in terms of price when considering display. Meaning, the cost of any single item is of little consequence to the joy and memories it brings. Just because an item was expensive or even if you found it for free, doesn’t make either piece more or less valuable to your collections. • Displaying like items together strengthens their visual presentation. So, if you have some pottery from Mexico, France, Italy and Asia all found at different times and places along the way, they can make a strong statement displayed together. The shared material is what relates them. Their differing stories are what makes them interesting. • Gathering together pieces that might seem mismatched to each other is another way of adding visual interest by allowing each item to stand out by contrast. When dealing with a larger collection, I like to mix this approach with the one above. Every display in your room doesn’t have to be executed in the same manner.
• Think levels. Sometimes the most dramatic way to allow your pieces to stand out is to add multiple levels to the display. I use small tabletop platforms in a variety of styles, sizes and materials. But, you can just as easily use stacked books in the same way to add visual interest to your display. As we celebrate travel this month at The Standard magazine, I hope you will keep in mind that when you come home, I want you to relive every wonderful memory you bring back. Where you go or how far is not the point. Meaningful memories are created when we allow ourselves to see what is right in front of us. You can press a flower between the pages of a book, keep a menu card from a favorite restaurant or print a photo that thrills you every time you see it. These are the things worth saving…and displaying. They are your art. They don’t have to make sense to anyone else but, you. I say it often both here and to my clients, when you are decorating to please yourself, you really cannot get it wrong. This is all about what makes you happy, what moves you. A life well lived is not one that is precisely decorated or pricey, it is messy and wonderful. Love what you live with and live with what you love. Live Well! ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
Your eyes are on 2020. One election is past and thoughts are on the next one: votes equal change, and you’re ready for it. You’ll be the next in a long line of changers, as you’ll see in the new book “The Children of Harvey Milk” by Andrew Reynolds. In the latter part of June 1978, Harvey Milk, the “Mayor of Castro Street,” called former Army nurse and Castro Street “fixture” Gilbert Baker and asked him to make something special for the upcoming Gay Freedom parade. At that time, the rainbow flag was “a rebel flag,” but Baker subsumed it into a symbol of pride. By the end of that year, Milk was dead and rainbow flags were still “rare and exotic,” as were openly gay politicians. Just a handful of “LGB” people were in office around the world at that time; it would be years before the first openly trans individual would be elected. Here, Reynolds tells their stories, and others, worldwide. He begins with a battle in New Zealand’s Parliament that was narrowly won, followed four years later by marriage equality victory in nearby Australia. He writes of two gay politicians who squared off in Great Britain, noting that laws against buggery were still on the books when they did battle. He tells of a Dutch politician who, by mere months, preceded Harvey Milk as the world’s first openly gay man to serve in office. And he shares a story of politics in Ireland, “the first country in the world to pass gay marriage by popular referendum.” Closer to home, Reynolds writes about Barney Frank, his “first political battle” for civil rights in Mississippi, and the “under celebrated” woman who inspired him. Reynolds recalls the beginning of the AIDS crisis, and what it was like to be active in politics then. He writes of trans politicians Sarah McBride and Danica Roem, and the fierce but highly ironic story of Pauli Murray, whose great-aunt’s land donation helped build a university that ultimately denied bathroom access to trans individuals. If you see “The Children of Harvey Milk” on a shelf somewhere, you may be confused by the title. No, author Andrew Reynolds isn’t referring to small humans; his title instead refers to babes in political office, worldwide, who happen to be gay. For some readers, that could present problems: fully half of Reynolds’ book is about politics overseas, and some of it won’t make sense unless you’ve got basic knowledge of how other governments work. Without it, you may not fully appreciate the significance of what you’ll read – and if that makes you feel a tinge of regretful
isolationism, know that, happily, Reynolds is a good teacher. Here, readers will easily learn, and what they learn is absolutely inspiring. For political animals, this book is an easy choice. For the slightly clueless, it’s a know-your-history book that doesn’t dwell strictly domestically. FEMMES AND THEIR GADGETS BY LEE LYNCH
It’s a shame, the things they don’t teach us at Butch School. In the Femme Gadgets class, I learned the basics of eyelash brushes and powdering noses and hoop, stud, drop, climber, and jacket earrings. The femme who has been cutting my hair for about twenty years was today appropriately made up and earring-ed, her own hair mostly blue with a complementary green streak along the part. She obviously has great fun with her various girly tools. But that’s not what she was all excited about. It was Vector, her Kickstarter miniature robot. Vector is not without its useful functions, but is mainly an adorable, irresistible gadget that has learned to say her name. Then, lo and behold, I arrive home and the mailperson has brought my sweetheart a five-inch fan. Small enough for travel, it runs off a USB energy source or batteries. It’s the most flexible little fan I’ve ever seen. She set it up and demonstrated its features one by

one, including its big clamp, its three speeds, and the fact that it was for me. I’m staring it down as it challenges me to try it a day later, after I’ve forgotten all the instructions. My sweetheart also wears a Fitbit and figured out every one of its functions, though she reminds me that we haven’t yet checked her heart rate when kissing. When the arthritis in my thumbs flared up, she was the one who found me a nifty gadget that twists off bottlecaps and lifts up tabs to open cat food cans. She also found me an electric jar and bottle opener, which I’m still learning to use—she was an expert within five minutes. If I manage to position the clamps so they embrace a lid, I get stuck at the dismounting and the contents splatter all over the counter. Possibly the most exciting of her gadgets, which come free, except for taxes, through a reviewing program, was the little toy drone. She’s still trying to get it to work again after hours of setting
it up and experimenting. One of our male, mechanically-inclined neighbors, who owns three real drones, came over to help, but it was my sweetheart who diagnosed the problem: the battery power drains so fast the wee drone bounces off walls, kitchen appliances, lamps, mirrors and doors. The neighbor periodically asks if we have our pilot licenses yet. A few weeks ago, a planter arrived. It’s about five foot by three foot and three feet high. Assembly required. Lots of it, including a water gauge thingy. My sweetheart loves doing this stuff. I was sent to the office to write. Last week, the “shed” made its appearance. (We’re real friendly with our UPS driver.) It’s basically an ultra-sturdy toy chest for garden equipment. Or for toy drones with unresolved issues. She was exhilarated: fabrication required using the electric screwdriver I gave her as a jokey birthday gift. I’ve discovered the joke is on me. I thought I was gadget-happy, but do not get between a femme and her mechanical puzzles. Even the clunkers. The rice cooker wasn’t really a clunker. It worked fine for many meals. Then one day my sweetheart forgot to place the bowl in the cooker before filling it with water—the electronics were soaked. It still worked, but she enthusiastically welcomed the next rice cooker she was sent to review. I voluntarily absent myself from her industrious zone when tricky things come her way. The dash cam, for example, took some doing on her part. As have the cat towers, all three of them. I offered to assemble the most recent one, despite knowing I’d need to give up and ask for her help when I inevitably blew it, but she forestalled that eventuality by declining my offer. I have the patience to write a novel, but not to read directions. Especially when something comes along like the OBD2 which, she had to explain to me, is an automotive onboard diagnostic tool. But the tool is useless on its own. You have to download an app called Torque to get the two to work together. Heck, I had enough trouble setting up the simple Mini Google Home and even it couldn’t answer my questions about how an OBD works. Where no woman has gone before, my sweetheart perseveres. We don’t have a lawn, barely even a yard, but when we get another pint-sized dog, she plans to fence and grass over a patch behind the house so we can let our puppy-to-be outside in the Oregon rain. The only obstacle she came up with was buying a lawn mower. She had her eye on lightweight electric models when, voila, she received one to review. And build. We now both have car battery chargers and automatic tire inflators. I’m not sure how I’ll make them work if I’m alone on the road in my fifteen-year-old car. Even Vector needs a femme.

NETFLIX’S ‘TALES OF THE CITY’ REVIVAL UPDATES A QUEER INCLUSIVE SERIES FOR A NEW ERA The 10-episode dramedy, slated to debut this summer, is based on Maupin’s acclaimed book series of the same name – nine novels published between 1978 and 2014, telling a story first developed as a serialized column in the San Francisco Chronicle. The first book was the basis for the 1993 PBS miniseries “Tales of the City,” starring Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis. Two additional installments, “More Tales of the City” and “Further Tales of the City,” followed on Showtime in 1998 and 2001. With its colorful, diverse cast of characters, the television trilogy has been embraced as a queer cult classic over the years. Fans will be pleased to know that Linney and Dukakis are reprising their roles in the Netflix series, along with a host of talented newcomers. Set in 1970s San Francisco, PBS’ “Tales of the City” followed Mary Ann Singleton (Linney), a woman from Ohio, as she learned to navigate San Francisco and encountered the story’s various freewheeling characters, many of them LGBTQ. Along the way, she found an apartment at 28 Barbary Lane, where her eccentric landlady, Anna Madrigal (Dukakis), came to serve as a surrogate mother of sorts.
were totally unaware of such a landmark thing,” she said. “It felt really exciting to get to dive back into an overtly queer community and bring in some new faces and new generation of character and audience.” Morelli pointed out that all the writers of the Netflix series are LGBTQ.
“Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City,” picks up as a middleaged Mary Ann returns to present-day San Francisco for Anna’s 90th birthday celebration. Once there, she is reunited with members of her chosen family, including gay pal Michael “Mouse” Tolliver.
“If we were going to do this, it needed to usher in a new generation of characters and then, hopefully, a younger audience,” she said. “We know how starved the younger, queer community is for authentic representation. You want to create a world that looks like our world.”
In keeping with the show’s contemporary setting, modern San Francisco issues – such as the encroachment of the tech industry and the fact that the city is now consistently ranked as one of America’s most expensive – will be incorporated into the narrative. Show runner and executive producer Lauren Morelli said that she felt the timing was right for a “Tales of the City” revival, with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall demonstrations – often considered the symbolic start of the LGBTQ rights movement – coming up in June.
This new Tales of the City will draw inevitable comparisons to the gay-centric shows that followed in Maupin’s footsteps like Queer as Folk and another San Francisco-set story: Looking. But no one will mistake the new Tales of the City for the latter—which drew some critique for being perhaps too dry and low-key. “There’s always the sort of mystery element of Tales,” Morelli says and this new version is no exception. “When I read those books, I’m like, ‘Armistead, you were doing 100 things at once, and somehow making it work.’ This is the escape that I hope we all kind of deserve right now. The characters deserve it; we, as an audience, deserve it. Let’s just create a safe space where we can disappear an hour at a time.”

This year the breakfast is commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising which is known as the birth of the modern LGBT movement, and the Assassination of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California, and his legacy of groundbreaking inspiration in the struggle to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. The event is designed to strengthen coalitions among the many diverse community organizations that work toward equality in the Coachella Valley and benefit Coachella Valley youth through Gay-Straight Alliance clubs and LGBT youth related programs.

By 2012 they had became known Lucy and Gail, producers of events of interest to women; especially their Palm Springs Women in Jazz Festival. The focus is now on helping to shape a LBGTQ community where social justice and issues of equality are discussed and share the same importance as issues of gender and sexuality.
Lesbian Activists Lucy DeBardelaben and Gail Christian will be this year’s recipients of the Harvey B. Milk Leadership Award at the 8th Annual Coachella Valley Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
Keynoting the Breakfast will be State Controller Betty Yee. Ms. Yee has more than 35 years of experience in public service, specializing in state and local finance and tax policy. Previously she served as Chief Deputy Director for Budget with the California Department of Finance where she led the development of the Governor’s Budget, negotiations with the Legislature and key budget stakeholders, and fiscal analyses of legislation. Prior to this, she served in senior staff positions for several fiscal and policy committees in both houses of the California State Legislature. She also cofounded the Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project, which exposes California high school youth to the public service, public policy, and political arenas. Ms. Yee is dedicated to creating

NORWEGIAN AIRLINES ADDS THE LATE GAY SAN FRANCISCO SUPERVISOR HARVEY MILK TO ITS TAIL FIN HEROES. Milk, the first out gay person to win elective office in both San Francisco and California, only to be assassinated 11 months into his term on the morning of November 27, 1978, is the eighth American to be honored by the international carrier on one of its aircraft. His image will be featured on a newly built Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner that flew from Seattle Monday for London to receive its final detailing and installation. The aircraft, the 168th in the Norwegian fleet to feature a tail fin hero, will be based out of London but is expected to fly various routes to the U.S. including to New York City’s JFK airport and to San Francisco International Airport. In a statement Norwegian founder and CEO Bjørn Kjos said the company sees the honor as paying tribute to Milk’s “bravery and courage” in fighting for equal rights “that will span the globe for years to come, reinforcing our joint commitment to making the world a smaller, friendlier and more inclusive place.” “Like ours, Harvey Milk’s mission was reflective of a pioneering spirit,” stated Kjos. “He demonstrated a tireless hunger to look past the differences of people and instead focus on bringing them together for the greater good, which we know resonates with many Americans.”
Milk is the third male LGBT icon, and first American out man, to be featured on a Norwegian airplane. The visage of the late Queen front man Freddie Mercury and the late author Oscar Wilde have both graced the tail fin of one of the airline’s crafts. When asked if its inaugural flight into the Bay Area could be timed to the state’s Harvey Milk Day holiday this May 22, which is Milk’s birthday, Norwegian spokesman Anders Lindström didn’t rule it out. Norwegian marketing director Ben Kaufman had recommended that the company add Milk to its list of tail fin heroes. The New Jersey native is a gay man, as is Lindström, who is from Sweden. “We are proud to partner with Norwegian, having Uncle Harvey join the airline’s forward- thinking Tail Fin Hero program that already includes change makers like Sojourner Truth and Oscar Wilde,” stated Stuart Milk in the airline’s release. “This is such a unique way to educate and celebrate those that have come before us, allowing for their legacies to live on. We look forward to seeing Harvey ‘flying’ into airports across the globe and continuing to spread his message of acceptance.”

ON THE ROAD AGAIN BY JILL LANGHAM
Well Spring has sprung, the grass has risen, and I wonder where my suitcase is, cause I’m getting ready to hit the road! If you’ve been following me, you might remember that I had a pretty rough experience last year when it came to travel. Yeah, you feel really sorry for me, I know! But, seriously to have gone so far only to be so sick was a bummer that I don’t want to repeat. So this year, I’ve got a whole new plan with new counties, less parties, more history and a ton of fun. However the first 2 adventures do involve Pride Celebrations. The first one is in Puerto Vallarta over Memorial Day Weekend, which I’m quite excited about. It’s only my 2nd visit to the new “Gay Mecca” and I will be staying in Zona Erotica, err, I mean Zona Romantica! I will be hitting the beach (a whole 2 blocks from where I’ll be staying so I can walk there & back) and I will definitely be hitting the newest clubs including Industry to dance off the champagne that I will be drinking daily. If the condo building that I’m staying in has a gym, I’ll be hitting the weights as well because 10 days after my return I’ll be heading to Tel Aviv for their Pride. This holds special interest for me because although I was raised Catholic, my Mom was Jewish so technically, I too am Jewish but know very little about my heritage. In preparation I’ve been watching a lot of different shows on both Amazon Prime & Netflix that are filmed on location whetting my whistle for this historic and cultural Mecca. The men and women of Israel are categorically gorgeous, especially the gay men but from what I’m seeing so are the straight men, so I want to dress to impress and be as fit as possible. I had already ramped up my workout’s last month in preparation for WP30, which of course, has come and gone. Thankfully the group of men that I travel with are also invested in their health and appearances so they will be in the know as to the closest and best gyms to go to while in Tel Aviv. And of course the hours of dancing will help keep the pounds at bay as well.
We typically stay at Airbnb’s and shop daily for fresh foods to cook up, keeping our costs and excess calorie slip ups to a minimum. I have heard that the food in Israel is delicious and that fruits and vegetables taste completely different from their American counterparts. I guess the term “the bread basket of the World” will makes more sense once I’m there. It will also be interesting to see how much it costs to go to the gyms in Tel Aviv as well. I’ve been amazed at the deals that I’ve gotten in many of the big cities in Europe that I’ve traveled to in the past 5 years in comparison to similar sized cities in the States. It’s much cheaper in Europe and since the workout craze has finally hit in a huge way, the gyms tend to be state of the art, immaculate and a lot of fun. I will be reporting in about my experiences there and compare them to San Diego Pride which I will attend in July before I head out for an amazing 6 week trip to some new places in Europe! As we say good-bye to April showers and welcome in May flowers. We also welcome and celebrate National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. I recently got the opportunity to speak with the owner of CrossFit Palm Springs Matthew Martin about his plans to bring more fitness awareness to our valley. With so many options to choose from these days, I wanted to find out what sets CrossFit apart from all the others. We spoke about the positive impact he has had on his members overall fitness, and about his plans to promote health and fitness within the entire desert community through partnerships with charitable organizations.

The Standard Magazine: What is CrossFit and what does it teach your members? Matthew Martin: CrossFit is a training methodology that uses Functional Movements (movements that exist inside and OUTSIDE of the gym) such as squats, burpees, running, etc… to improve a person’s overall fitness. Another way to put it would be to say that doing CrossFit will improve our members’ Work Capacity, or their ability to perform reasonably well at a variety of physical tasks. Improvements to their fitness will ultimately lead to improvements in their health and quality of life in the long run. We are teaching

TSM: How is CrossFit different than training at a standard gym? MM: The first thing that sets CrossFit apart from a traditional gym is the group setting. Anyone who has ever been to the gym can tell you that it’s more fun and motivating to have a workout partner... imagine having 5 - 10! Sometimes more! The group is lead by a Coach through a warm up, taught the movements they will need for that day’s WOD (workout of the day) and supervised while they do the workout. The entire class is about 1 hour start to finish. There are several advantages to training in a group. First, it’s a much better value for the members when compared to personal training. 1 month of Crossfit will usually cost you less than $200/month. Personal training rates start at about $1/minute. You do the math. Second, the group setting creates a fun atmosphere and provides a sense of camaraderie and community. It can even spark some friendly competition that will help motivate some people. Third, you don’t have to think! Your Coach is there to tell you exactly what to do. The group will be there to motivate you and cheer you on. All you have to do is SHOW UP!

TSM: How long have you been at your new downtown CrossFit Palm Springs facility and how are your members and the community receiving it? MM: We have been in our newer, 4,000 square foot location since Feb. of 2018. I think the members are enjoying it. The new box has a really cool vibe to it. You definitely don’t feel like you’re in a warehouse gym. We have more space and A/C that we didn’t have at our last location. I get compliments every week from visitors about how nice the space is. It feels really good to hear that from people. I hope that my members can see how invested I am in providing them with the best CrossFit box I possibly can. TSM: What got you interested in CrossFit? MM: I got into CrossFit sometime between 2006-2008. I was in my twenties and getting tired of going out drinking all the time. I bought myself a pull up bar for at home a decided to start exercising. I went to YouTube and searched for videos of people doing pull ups, and found these videos of people doing these crazy looking pull ups called “kipping pull ups”. They were doing 20, 30, 40 reps at a time! I didn’t even think it was possible to do that many. I looked at more of these videos and realized they were doing this thing called CrossFit. Soon after that, I bought my first set of weights and began doing it on my own at home. I would get the WOD from the main CrossFit website which they published for free. TSM: Did you ever see yourself going from member, trainer to owning your own box? And for those who don’t know the CF terminology, why do you call it a box? MM: Sometime in 2010 the first real CrossFit “Box” opened in the Coachella Valley. The reason they call them boxes is because they usually are just a square warehouse space at the beginning. We eventually fill them with

equipment and people, but they still feel like a big empty box when you compare them to a tradition gym filled with treadmills, stair climbers, and bench press racks. We need space! Space to jump, climb ropes, lift weights over head, and all kinds of other fun stuff! Anyways, I joined a CrossFit gym already having a few years of previous experience doing it. I loved it, and I was getting pretty good at it. I never would have thought this would be what I get to do for a living, but my first coach Cheryl saw the potential in me and suggested I give it a try... and here I am 9 years later. TSM: What do you love about CrossFit? MM: I love everything about CrossFit, but I’ll narrow it down to 1 for this question. CrossFit builds mental fortitude. Exercise in general does this, but CrossFit does a better job of it in my opinion. Fitness is a measurable thing. How much weight can you lift, or how fast you can move. To improve these metrics over time you have to push out of your comfort zone on a regular basis. You have to increase your power output, or Intensity. There’s no easy way to do this. You have to face that discomfort. Experiencing this on a daily basis at the gym has made me better able to tolerate discomfort outside of them gym. It made me mentally tougher and more resilient. I can work harder, longer, and smarter than the previous version of my competitors or myself. TSM: Is CrossFit for everyone? MM: Yes! Absolutely it is. Everyone agrees that exercise is good for you, and CrossFit is just exercise. It’s a mix of weightlifting, gymnastics, and ‘cardio’ put together in a 1-hour group class. My youngest student at the moment is 11, and my oldest is in his 70’s. Anyone can do CrossFit, and do it safely if they’re willing to set aside their ego and be a good student.

TSM: What progress have you seen in your members? MM: Over the past 9 years I’ve seen every kind of change in people that you can imagine. I’ve seen overweight people lose the weight. ‘Weak’ people become physically strong. Shy people gain confidence. People on medications no longer need them after starting CrossFit. I’ve seen people give up vices like smoking and excessive drinking once they start doing CrossFit. Overall, I think people come here and realize what they are really capable of and how valuable their bodies are. TSM: Tell us about the fundraiser you recently hosted and partnered on with Creativo Partners for the Boys & Girls Club of Palm Springs? And do you see CrossFit Palm Springs hosting more fundraisers for different charities throughout the Coachella Valley? MM: It was really fun! The event concept and strategic partnerships was the brainchild of Creativo Partners, for CrossFit Palm Springs. They brought the event to me as a strategy to build community relations, bridge the gap between teens, law enforcement and cross fitters, in an effort to raise funds for the Boys & Girls Club of Palm Springs. We had the teen participants do a partner workout with either

one of our members or a police officer. We all got to get a workout in and meet and interact with some of our local Police Officers in a positive setting, instead of only meeting them when you’re getting a speeding ticket! All proceeds from the event went to the Boys & Girls Club of Palm Springs. In partnership, both CrossFit Palm Springs and Creativo Partners donated significant resources by way of creative content, marketing, event coordination, and weekly teen training sessions at the Boys & Girls club with Coach Matt and teen volunteer assistant Aiden Coladonato. I was really happy with how it turned out. I do plan on doing the event again next year, and I’d also like to find other opportunities to help the Palm Springs and Coachella Valley communities. TRAVELLING WHILE TRANS BY CHRISTINA VRONAY RUGGLES
From exciting new make-out spots to art galleries to tasty new foods and even tastier views, travelling is almost always a good time. I’m not here to disparage it. The excitement of something new, so much new as to make your head spin. But travelling and travelling while queer are two very different things. As much as Palm Springs is a good place to be queer, I wouldn’t call the Valley, or planet Earth, a necessarily 100% safe place to be queer. Look a little bit too queer in Rancho Mirage and the elderly will stare, and or glare. You can go farther out and probably get a little bit less safe. I’m no authority though, just wary. I’m not a girl with a lot of trust in her little heart. I still enjoy travelling though. Travelling has shaped me into the woman I am today. My parents took me places as a child. Places like China, France, Utah, New York, Boston, and, apparently, New Zealand— though I was a fat, memoryless baby at the time. The memories generated by these happenings are things I still treasure. I’ve taken myself places as well; I’m not sedentary. Road-trips to Los Angeles and to San Francisco. Flying into Seattle with my girlfriend so we

can see my mother. I don’t have bad memories of these trips, but they’re also decently good places to be queer. That tidbit, that fact was one I was very much aware of when I made my travel plans. I’m not some victim of constant street harassment and, for queer people especially, the world has probably gotten safer. I don’t think facts are what my panicky lizard brain is responding to though. It’s responding to the looks and the glares and the uncomfortable stares. To seeing another group of white, cis, heterosexual public displays of affection. When the thought “How many miles until the next queer person?” enters my brain, that’s when my lizard brain kicks in. Flicking its worried little tongue into the anxiety-tinged air. I’m not sure I had a distinct sense of wanderlust before coming out, but I certainly don’t have one now. I have a sense of homelust. Of nesting. Oh goodness me, I just want to nest. To have and make and be part of a home. Do activities, have a routine, plan a budget, take naps, be excited for a new restaurant opening, or a local band’s show. That’s me though. The rest of you happy people better be spreading queerness all over the globe like Neil Armstrong spread his boot on the moon’s face.
Mother Besides this month’s issue being focused on travelling, it will also be Mother’s Day this month. Exciting! For some of us. Some of our family is dead to us, or just regular dead. Honor or dishonor them as you wish. But my mother and travelling are rather strangely intertwined. About 5 months or so after I came out to her as her daughter, we decided to take me on a small college-touring trip. At the time I was only really interested in UC Berkeley, so that was our only actual destination. I think calling it a college tour was a lazy excuse for us to see each other. More her to see me. She had been the 1st one I told that was confused, if not a little bit hurt by my coming out. She didn’t understand how this had happened. She was happy for me, just afraid that I was, in some way, going to hurt myself. She wanted to make sure I was doing this whole “becoming a woman” affair safely. I was frustrated with her in the moment but in hindsight I understand completely. I don’t blame her. We’re actually closer than ever, and a huge portion of our relationship was built on this road trip. It was hours locked together in a rental car. We drove from Los Angeles to San Fran in one day, so that’s about 8 or 9 hours. I didn’t know what to expect at first. Would I hear every little nitpicking thing I’d heard over the phone again? Every concern? Every worry and fear? While the answer was inevitably yes, she was also forced to listen to me. As much as I was locked in there with her, she was locked in there with me. So we talked, and yelled, and cried a little a bit, and listened. At some point, she drove me up to Petaluma, about an hour north of San Francisco, and showed me the house I was born in. We stayed in an Airbnb. We met up with a family friend. We took the scenic route. We re-built our relationship. We killed the mother and son. We built the mother and daughter. In between the air-conditioned walls of the little white rental car, we built a relationship that I never thought I’d have with her. I think we’re closer today than we’ve ever been. The fact that she gifted me and my girlfriend tickets to Portland and Seattle says a little something. I think it says she loves me—and after meeting her, my girlfriend—and so much more. She still has questions and confusions time to time. But she knows I’m her daughter. What I have with my mother is a privilege. It’s something not all trans people have, much less many queer peoples. I’m so proud and lucky to be my mother’s daughter. Travelling, and my mother, made our current state possible. It made it possible to build our relationship from the ground up. For that, and that alone, I love travelling. P.S.: I could gush on and on about my mother. I really could. I won’t here. She’s the foundation for my womanhood and I want to reiterate how proud I am to be her daughter. Happy Mothers’ Day and more importantly, happy adventuring!
