JUSTIN UTLEY’S “SURVIVORS” OVERCOMING THE TRAUMA OF CONVERSION THERAPY Conversion Therapy: the disproven pseudoscientific practice of attempting to change an individual’s sexual orientation using psychological and spiritual interventions. OUTMusic Award winning singer/songwriter Justin Utley releases “Survivors” Recorded in Salt Lake City, “Survivors” is an anthemic pop track, written by Swedish songwriting duo Linda & Ylva, reworked and expanded upon by Utley to include his rallying cry against conversion therapy. The stirring music video to “Survivors” features a collaboration with the University of Utah Chamber Orchestra, and the orchestral version will be featured on the forthcoming album. “Survivors” is the debut single from Justin Utley’s highly anticipated third studio album, Scars. The album is expected to be one of the most heartfelt, brutally honest, thought provoking and vulnerable collection of songs he has ever produced. It also introduces an exciting new sound for Justin Utley: it is a bold move into up-tempo, anthemic and gritty pop. “At this point in my musical journey, the gloves are off,” Utley declares. “There was a time for playing it safe, but I’ve come to a space where I am no longer satisfied with the status quo, musically and personally. I don’t want to spend time placating and catering to the willful ignorance and self-induced biases of people, especially to those who have the power to spark change and shape a better life for LGBTQ youth.” “Survivors is about facing and overcoming insurmountable odds and learning to thrive in the face of adversity,” explains Justin Utley from his Salt Lake City home. “It’s about survivors of abuse in all forms and how it takes a great deal of effort to move forward in life while carrying the heavy burden of trauma.” Justin Utley knows about survival first-hand. He grew up in a devout Mormon home, believing his same gender attraction was an addiction, disorder, and learned behavior. He was required to undergo two years of faith-based conversion therapy, even taking medications prescribed to help suppress the feelings. The therapy wasn’t successful and Justin began dating men. However, his newfound joy of freedom quickly turned to grief when the man he dated died from a suicidal drug overdose. Justin’s bishop asserted the death was a sign of God’s displeasure. Soon after,

Justin’s employer discovered he was gay through monitoring his company email. At the time, Utah had no protections in housing or employment and so it was legal for them to terminate him, and they did. “My entire existence seemed to be broken and unfixable, and I got to a point where I thought not existing would be a better option. Working through that dark period of my life was probably one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done.”

Justin Utley’s experience with discrimination, religious bullying, his own internal homophobia, and suicide are all depicted in the music video for “Survivors.” It features a little girl (played by Justin Utley’s niece!), confronting a fight or flight moment, who learns that she, has the power to survive, thrive, and learn to fly. It perfectly echoes Utley’s life mantra: even if you can’t see a silver lining, you can make one. Born and raised in Utah, Justin Utley’s music career took off when he

was selected to perform at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. After breaking ties with his Mormon roots and moving to New York City, Justin became a sought-after talent, spending much of his career touring as a performer at Pride Festivals worldwide where he has shared the stage with top international acts including Dan Reynolds, Icona Pop, Tegan & Sara, and Margaret Cho. In June 2010, Utley released “Stand for Something,” a single written to inspire and motivate action towards securing LGBT marriage equality in the United States. The LGBT Academy of Recording Arts nominated the single for 4 OutMusic Awards, including Best Songwriter and Artist of the Year. It won Best Country/ Folk Song of the Year. Justin has served as a guest contributor on CNN’s ‘Faces of Faith’ Sunday news segment, NPR, SiriusXM’s OutQ and MSNBC. He is a two-time recipient of the FBI’s “Inspiring Citizen of the Year” award, and “Artist of the Year” by SiriusXM’s OutQ Radio. He regularly provides insight on issues of faith and the LGBT community at colleges and universities throughout the USA. “Survivors” is available on Apple Music, Spotify and all digital platforms. Last month, all proceeds from “Survivors” were donated to the Born Perfect Campaign, a survivor-led movement working to end conversion therapy. Visit Justin Utley’s website @ Justinutley.com. Q&A

JUSTIN UTLEY’S ANTHEM FOR “SURVIVORS”, LIKE HIM THE OUT SINGER TALKS ABOUT HIS TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE WITH CONVERSION THERAPY BY LARRY OLSEN

Singer Justin Utley was 24-years-old when his church leaders forced him into conversion therapy. They threatened embarrassment for his family and expulsion from the church – essentially social and cultural suicide within the Mormon culture of Utah – if he didn’t comply with their demands. He was told that being gay wasn’t biological. That his same gender attraction condition was caused by a number of psychological and environmental variables that could be cured through intense psychotherapy, weekly group meetings and specially prescribed medications. In the end, the therapy proved to be more than unsuccessful. The repercussions from having such a large part of his identity vilified, stripped of its integrity, broken down, and compartmentalized as a condition, has been debilitating for Justin. He sings about the trauma in “Survivors,” the first single from his third album, Scars. Why did you choose “Survivors” as the first single off Scars? JUSTIN UTLEY: Scars is one of the most heartfelt, brutally honest, thought provoking and vulnerable collection of songs I’ve ever worked on. “Survivors” is the perfect opening (to the album) because it is about overcoming insurmountable odds and eventually thriving, despite our struggles in the face of adversity. It takes a lot to move forward in

10 THESTANDARDPS.COM

life while carrying traumatic experiences with us. This song is my way of honoring that. Have you left the Mormon faith? I have but my sexuality had little to do with my leaving, to be honest. It was a catalyst for me to dig deeper into the Mormon faith’s problematic history that had been purposely hidden from me. Do you still consider yourself a person of faith? I am a humanist. I believe that the power of God is in each of us. We have the power to create, change, build, and destroy. It isn’t up to someone in the sky to help people in need. It’s up to us to do it. We have that capability. It’s just a matter of discovering it, ignoring the noise of people who want to control where our attention and money go, and to start using our lives for something good, instead of standing by, watching in complicity. How has your family reacted to your decision to come out? They’ve been behind me in this roller coaster, for better and for worse. They’ve each had their own internal challenges, spiritual or otherwise, but in the end, they didn’t just accept or tolerate me; they have embraced me, my values, and have stood by me.

Your niece is featured in the music video for “Survivors.” She is! When the narrative for the music video was finalized, the director and I looked into casting. I thought of her, and I suggested to my brother that she send in an audition video. I didn’t want her to think she could just assume she would get the part. What she sent in was adorable! She didn’t know it would only be the director and me watching. At the end of the tape, she said “I don’t know if you’re aware, but Justin Utley is my uncle, and he’s in the video, too.” Name dropping at eight years old. Clever girl! The orchestra in the video is simply incredible, Justin. Thank you! I have a story to share on that. The time when we were filming the music video was a particularly stressful period of life for me. I had just finished shooting a different video and was in the middle of finishing the album. I was feeling overwhelmed and doubting what I was even trying to accomplish with the project. But as I stood in the back talking to the lighting and sound techs, the director brought the orchestra on set. Their playing blew me away and it all became so real for me, in that moment, and tears came in my eyes! After all this work, all the technical stuff that robbed me of enjoying the artistic side of the project, my spirit just lifted as I heard the musicians breathe their magic into the song. It still brings me joy when I watch them play in the video. Moments like that keep us going and believing in what we’re doing and what we have to say. And it reminded me that even if you can’t see a silver lining, you can make one. Are all of the songs on Scars about your experience with conversion therapy? No, I touch on some deep relationship scars that I’ve experienced over the last few years. And there are also songs about loss and even suicide. There’s some pretty heavy stuff on Scars. You also introduce a new sound in the album. I’ve been looking for something different, a new sound that is still true to me and my art. Authenticity is something I value a lot. It’s something I won’t compromise on, and I think it’s something people are finding less and less of. I worked with a new producer and songwriter who pushed me lyrically, vocally, and musically, and it’s been exciting to explore this new side I didn’t realize I had. Even the more somber songs on Scars are intense and have a quicker tempo.

Q&A

I’ve really focused on keeping this album anthemic and pop-driven. It’s been a refreshing change for me. Where do you go from here, Justin? I’ll be touring in the fall with the new album, then securing some Pride dates for spring and summer. I’ve got two more projects in the hopper, and some opportunities for musical theater. I also have a few projects related to conversion therapy that will be finishing soon, including a resource for Survivors. Do you come across a lot of survivors at shows?

other survivors, and while it’s crucial that we stop this horrendous and archaic practice of conversion therapy, it’s just as critical to me that there is support and mental health resources available. There are a lot of scars that come with going through conversion therapy. Lots of shame, vulnerability, and insecurities. I’m building a resource that provides options for healing and direction, towards having a life that consists of healthy, happy, authentic relationships, including the one with yourself. SUMMER BEAT BOX BY JIMMY NEWSUM

You know that summer is in full force when all the biggest artists are releasing their hottest jams… so which will go down as 2019’s Song of the Summer? We know the mainstream contenders. Jonas Brothers “Sucker”, Sam Smith’s “Dancing with a Stranger” and Ariana Grande’s “Bloodline” are all dominating the airwaves. But what about the dance floor? Here are some of the top singles vying for 2019’s club song of the summer. “I Love You” CAZWELL Cazwell is the O.G. gay rapper and in truth, he remains one of the best, if not the best in the genre. His latest track re-unites him with Chris Bracco, his collaborator on “Ice Cream Truck” and “Loose Wrists.” This is his first love song and he proudly calls it “cheesy, corny and incredibly catchy, like a Bruno Mars song”. We call it sassy, frolicsome, colorful and slightly off-the-wall. It’s a complete 180 from his last two singles, “Hella Horny,” a 90s house jam and “Weirdo,” an early 2000s hip-hop track. It features a quirky little whistle track that you won’t be able to get out of your head and Bridget Barkan, formerly with Scissor Sisters, singing a sample of the “Ooh Boy, I Love You So” melody from the Rose Royce classic.

14 THESTANDARDPS.COM

“End Up Missing” YANNI BURTON Yanni Burton’s third independent single release this year is an inspiring summer dance track he wrote about the passion, lust, and excitement of a new relationship and what happens when it fades. Produced by Lars Soderberg (Lauv, Adam Rickfors, Black Eyed Peas’ Printz Board), Yanni says he wrote the song at a time in his life when he was staying out late, meeting new people, being stupid with friends and getting lost in dance music. “It’s all about me being young and trying to figure out my love life and emotions,” he explains. It’s reminiscent of a Justin Timberlake tune. The music video is a must-see. It features a nearly nude Yanni Burton dancing in the middle of a steamy desert. “A Deeper Love” KENDRA ERIKA The #1 Billboard dance artist unites for a fifth time with Grammy Award winning producer Damon Sharpe on a powerful new song that urges listeners to dig deeper into matters of the heart. It is the follow-up to “Self Control,” Kendra Erika’s remake of the Laura Branigan classic that hit the top spot on the Billboard dance

chart earlier this year. In “Deeper”, Kendra encourages listeners off social media, emphasizing the importance of engaging with real world people. At its core, the track is a lush, theatrical ballad with a mesmerizing beat that provides the perfect platform for Kendra’s impressive vocals. “Another Broken Heart” BILLY WINN The first single off of Billy Winn’s Dreamland 2 album is a heavy-octane dance number with a strong, relatable message about getting chewed up and spit out. Billy has admitted in interviews that he didn’t originally intend for “Another Broken Heart” to be a dance record. Its original chorus was a mid-tempo beat. The idea to speed up the melody and make it a dance record came from his production team, Johnie & Elliot. Billy ended up loving the faster version so much, he decided to make it the lead track, because, as he says it, “High energy dance is always a great place to get things started.” We second that. “Ride the Wave” DREW SCHIFF Listeners got a taste of Drew’s sentimental side in his last single release, “It’s Just Today,” but he digs even deeper into his emotions in “Ride the Wave”. It is a song he wrote about the importance of leaning on loved ones in times of need. “There have been times I have felt I wasn’t strong enough to deal with a problem,” he reflects. “I’m a strong guy, so yeah, I probably had most of what it took to rise above the crisis but sometimes, when things get really dark, everyone needs that that little whisper of ‘I believe in you’ to help

overcome what appears to be insurmountable.” It’s a beautiful, wellcrafted song that takes listeners on an emotional journey they won’t want to get off of. “Don’t Let Me Go” DARIO Has your summer crush left you crushed? Dario puts his bleeding heart on the line in “Don’t Let Me Go,” the second single from his Ascension LP. It is an anthemic rock power ballad he wrote about a recent failed relationship in which he was denied the opportunity to say his peace. So he’s singing it instead. Produced by Kevin Anyaeji (Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole, Kylie Minogue) and Shane Facchinello (Austin Mahone, Cody Simpson), “Don’t Let Me Go” captures the battle and struggle many of us have faced after being kicked to the curb and dehumanized by the one person we thought we could rely on. “Irresistible” PLASTIQUE TIARA A fan favorite on season 11 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Plastique Tiara admits she didn’t always feel so “Irresistible.” Growing up in Vietnam, she recalls being shameful of who she was and living in constant fear of disappointing her family and everyone she loved. But in her debut music single that draws inspiration from the confidence drag has instilled in her life, Plastique proves why she is “Irresistible” to fans today. Executive produced by Hosh Gureli (Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton) and produced by multi-platinum, Grammy Award Winner Jared Lee Gosselin, “Irresistible” is polished, persistent, and has a heart of gold just like Plastique herself. She describes the song’s sound as: “when you look in the mirror, and you know that you are that bitch”. We couldn’t agree more.

“Super Delicious” MEGAN VICE Megan Vice continues to rock her own special brand of glam, sass and disco-infused funk pop with her newest single that is a little bit dirty, a tad naughty, and a whole lot of fun. Megan and indie pop priestess Catey Shaw came up with the idea for a silly love song about junk food from an instrumental made by Catey’s producer/ songwriter husband, Jay Levine. Megan then worked with producer Kyle Kelso to give the song a grittier kick. Megan’s irreverent, tongue-in-cheek lyrical style and musical prowess are in full effect on “Super Delicious”. She says she wants listeners to feel good about themselves this summer and live their best lives to a really fierce beat. Thanks to her, we’re doing just that.

“Jasmine Petals” RAPH SOLO The sexy out crooner proves he is just as pleasing in the ears as he is to the eyes with “Jasmine Petals,” the first single from his Life album. The contemporary euro-pop track begins with a haunting, melancholy introduction before a heavy bass beat kicks in along with piano and violin. The song is all about moving forward, and the lyrics that allude to Raph’s personal journey and some of the dark chapters he has faced, give real depth to his life-affirming music.

MUSIC FOR YOUR EYES BY JACOB LOPEZ

Sometimes the success of a song can come from its corresponding music video, after all we are visual people by nature. Since MTV no longer plays music videos we relay on platforms such as Vimeo and YouTube for our video fix. The music video provides a visual story to lyrics and also allows to get into the mind of the artist. Or maybe it gives us the new dance steps we need to learn before we go clubbing. Whatever the reason music videos provide us with a bit of an escape from our regular lives. Here are a few that are making the circuit this summer. Hope you like. KAZAKY “PUSH” Three years after a long creative break, KAZAKY (a high-heeled boy band from Ukraine) reunited to return to work on new music and premiered a video from the new era to the song “PUSH”, directed by Alan Badoev. This work is of great importance for the band, not only because it marks a new stage, but also because it’s the first big dedication to all fans and the whole LGBTQ+ community that has supported and continues to support KAZAKY for nine years, and represent a world of acceptance and self-expression, thanks to which the band has managed to become heard and seen. Also this video is dedicated to all those who need freedom and courage to be themselves and have their voice. Moreover, this video is released in honor of a big and important Ukrainian event - Kyiv Pride, which is a great achievement of their country. Directed by Francesco Calabrese and filmed in Barcelona, the ‘Ice Cream’ visuals see a carefree MIKA as vibrant as ever navigating his way through summer with dance routines, beach lounging and his trusty Ice Cream van. The summer bop was written by MIKA and co-written/produced by Daniel Black, along with Mark Crew and Dan Priddy. ‘Ice Cream’ is taken from MIKA’s forthcoming album, My Name Is Michael Holbrook, to be released October 4. “Ice Cream was written on a day of extreme heat.” MIKA comments, “It was the last few weeks of writing for the album; a writing period that lasted two years. Through the writing I had confronted personal, serious and at times painful issues, now I felt lighter and freer.” MIKA - Ice Cream https://youtu.be/MnL9CEONfUA CERAADI “LOYAL” L.A. based sister duo Ceraadi, with over 1.7 million Instagram followers, release the official music video for their buzzing label debut song “Loyal.” “Loyal” is the first new track from their upcoming EP due this summer. The vibrant Roxana Baldovin directed video is nostalgic and reminiscent of the 90s when music videos were colorful, fun and filled with catchy dance moves that made you watch them on repeat. INNA “TE VAS” Global megastar INNA’s much-anticipated debut Spanish album, YO (Me) is available now. INNA’s instantly iconic album, which features the skin-baring star surrounded by a colorful collage of floral artwork and song lyrics on the cover, showcases 12 hot tracks and accompanying videos spotlighting the singer’s songwriting talents and dance moves. This is INNA’s first album release in Spanish and her sixth overall. As the album title suggests, INNA’s focus is inward and living “La Vida” her way, as she tries to forget the one who broke her heart. The songstress, known for portraying a strong, sensual and empowered young woman, shows off those talents in the yet-to-bereleased videos. The video for “Te Vas” (You Go or You Leave) is a beautifully choreographed number that is part modern dance, part aerial acrobatics. BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

At its most basic, it’s just a piece of cloth. A nice poly-blend, perhaps, or a hank of nylon in a fade-resistant color. There are holes in one end to fasten to a pole or rope, but it’s otherwise just a piece of cloth. Yet, people have died for it and, as in the new book “Rainbow Warrior” by Gilbert Baker, that flag could be the fabric of revolution. Even as a small child, Gilbert Baker knew that he was gay. He grew up in Kansas, a child who loved to draw, create, wear fancy dresses, and dream of being an artist. Alas, art wasn’t a career in his parents’ eyes so Baker, as a young man, lied about his gayness and enlisted in the army, where he quickly realized that he was in for years of abuse (at best) or Vietnam (at worst). He “lived in terror” before filing as a conscientious objector; the Army instead listed him as a medic and sent him to San Francisco. It was the perfect accidental gift. “When I got to San Francisco,” he said, “I knew I wasn’t ever going back to Kansas.” Five days a week, Baker worked in an Army laboratory; the rest of the time was his to fall in love, explore his new city, and work on his sewing skills. Stitching became an obsession and by 1977, he was making costumes and banners for demonstrations. When he was asked to make something special for the city’s Gay Freedom Day Parade of 1978, he thought about the rainbow as a flag, and dived right in. While that first flag was a bit hit, Baker writes that the symbol didn’t take off quite as much as he’d hoped. Still, it was present in every “street activists” event he was part of, at every parade, and protest. “One pair of scissors” and a mile of fabric could “change the whole dynamic,” he wrote later. It was “a pure act of rebellion…” “Rainbow Warrior” was compiled from several manuscripts that the late author Gilbert Baker left after his death in 2017, a fact that would have been helpful to have, early on. You’ll be more forgiving of the overly florid prose, knowing that. Aside from that annoyance – one appearing throughout the book – readers may also notice a bit of pretentiousness, lot of snarky fighting, endless drugs, and getting naked in Baker’s narrative, which is likewise forgivable because much of it takes place post-Stonewall, post-Summer-of-Love, pre-AIDS. And thus is the appeal here. Baker was one of the more ferociously involved protesters, by his own account, and his anecdotes are priceless. He gives readers a

good first-person look at early efforts for gay rights, and eye-opening, sometimes jaw-dropping, behind-the-scenes peeks at life as a young gay man during an uprising. It’s a lively, outrageous look at outrage, in an account that seems not to have held one thing back. That makes “Rainbow Warrior” readable and entertaining and, despite its overly ornate verbosity, a good look at revolution cut from a different cloth. “Rainbow Warrior: My Life in Color” by Gilbert Baker c.2019, Chicago Review Press / $26.99 / $35.99 Canada 256 pages

INDESIGN DESIGN & MUSIC: TECHNOLOGY COMES HOME BY DANN FOLEY

Your home should speak to all of your senses, and sound is certainly part of that equation. Sometimes we design and plan to reduce sounds, sometimes to amplify them. When it comes to a soothing background, at Foley & Stinnette we design spaces that are completed, enlivened and emboldened by beautiful music. In the simplest of terms, music calms the savage beast and completes the most beautiful rooms. I have talked to you before about music in the home and many of my offerings remain valid today. What has changed and continues to change at an amazing pace is the technology available to you for your home in terms of sound and sound quality. Be it music or home theater, the quality of the sound is everything. I begin with considering the scale of the room and the material used. Too often today’s most popular building materials have a tendency to reflect and amplify sound, creating odd distortions and echoes. Before I consider options for adding speakers or other audio equipment, I have to decide if decorative materials and furnishings will be needed to warm up the room and tone down the

24 THESTANDARDPS.COM

background noise. Even the best speaker or sounds system cannot overcome the issue of the “great room”. Decorative items like rugs, window treatments, fabric and upholstery all help to absorb echo and diffuse distortions. One of my favorite ways to add speakers to rooms is by installing the Invisible Speaker. They are especially terrific for traditional spaces or anywhere you do not want to see the source of your sound. The amazing thing about this product is how it is installed. This product installs into your drywall and is finished in the same way the surrounding wall space so you see nothing! The speaker is invisible. You literally don’t know where the sound is coming from. This installation can be done on ceilings and walls and can also be used for your heating and cooling as well. This revolutionary product has actually been around for a number of years and was only really known by high-end designers but, now you can get it for your home! You know I am never going to excite you about a fabulous product without giving access. Follow the links below to a couple of my favorite brands of invisible speakers.

www.sonance.com/in-wall-ceiling/invisible-series www.stealthacoutistics.com/invisible-speakers/ www.revox.com Gone are the days of those enormous standing speakers the size of doors or the depth of a counter. Yes, there was a time when that was en-vogue. Today technology is all about being invisible and these speakers not only deliver the most incredible sound depth and quality, they do it without being seen. As a designer, be it professional or do-it-yourself, that means you no longer have to decide between speakers and art. You don’t have to consider the spacing of speakers and wall décor anymore because you can run your piece right up the edge of the actual speaker without having any odd relationships between the speaker grid and your art or mirrors. The proliferation of Smart Home devices in just the last couple of years has made us all tech-savvy consumers. From operating our appliances, systems, lighting and alarm systems remotely, these devices offer superior sound and the ability to control our audio and video home components. It is all about ease, convenience, wireless technology and voice commands. If the invisible wall/ceiling speakers are not in your plan or budget, the mini speakers from companies like Google Home and Amazon Alexa could be the perfect alternative for you. Their Smart Home centers can handle multiple speakers in any room and can be combined for whole-house use. They are small, portable and unobtrusive to your décor. And like all technology the cost seems to come down on a weekly basis making them easily affordable and accessible.

www.google.com Google Nest / Google Nest Hub / Google mini www.amazon.com Alexa / Echo / Echo Show/Plus www.jbl.com / JBL Link / JBL Link View Each of these companies and products have multiple options and colors to fit any décor and their latest iterations include digital and visual display. Talk to your friends and family, see who is at the front door, control your entire home with voice commands. We are living the Star Trek world of the future! The only thing missing is the “transporter” which cannot be far behind. Whatever your needs or desires for your homes audio & video systems, today is a new day! Ease, affordability and accessibility to the latest and best products are a call or a click away. Whichever route you choose, keep in mind my constant mantra of “Make Meaningful Choices”. This is your life and your home and you should live it to the best of your ability every day…and fill your home with joyful music! DANCING THROUGH EUROPE BY JILL LANGHAM

Hello my friends. Hope you’re all staying cool during this heat wave we are having world wide in this time of no global warming! My summer of Prides continued with my trip to Tel Aviv. I walked in the Parade with 250,000 people who had all come out to celebrate a long overdue acceptance of the LGBT community. I was struck by what Tel Aviv city council member in charge of LGBT affairs, Etai Pinkas said, “We’re here to celebrate our achievements and who we are, but we’re also here to shout that we’re tired of being outside the law and we will keep talking, struggling and fighting until we receive the equality and justice we deserve, just like anyone else.” The final day of Pride, I attended a 6-hour concert by the Israeli DJ, remixer & record producer, Offir Nissam. I was so impressed by the mix of straight and gay people in attendance all of whom were truly enchanted by his music. You may or may not think you’ve heard of him or his music but I have a feeling you’ve all heard his song, “Everybody needs a Man!” Am I right? Well he produced that and many more great songs, which he played for hours reminding me of The Who’s, Tommy, a rock concert that was released 50 years ago. Do you all remember that? Nissam is referred to as major pioneer of LGBT culture in Israel before they called it a culture. He is 55 years old. The show began with a full choir, who were dressed in what looked like Italian Operatic clothing. It was very powerful and got everyone’s attention. Then out came Offir, who received a standing ovation and cheering that lasted for many minutes! It was extremely powerful. Music, as you know is my passion; it allows me to Dance like everybody’s watching. It’s such an incredible form of exercise. Last month I shared my dance moves that work on my Booty as well as my legs. The cardiovascular benefits are plentiful as well, not to mention what it does for my spirit.

26 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Have you ever seen a bodybuilding show? There are plenty of them these days especially with the advent of all the new categories. I mention this because each contestant must perform a one-minute routine to music. This is done as an opportunity for the individual to showcase the work that they have done on their physiques as well as give them their one-minute of fame as they have the stage to themselves. Depending on the person’s level of comfort with their own body and their ability to dance or move, they either move up the ranks, stay the same or lose their placement. So, it behooves these athletes to have their dance moves down. The more muscle these guys have, the less flexible they tend to be. There are of course those few guys who have taken ballet, or Pilates whose bodies are more fluid, but for the most part they still look a bit like hippos in Tutu’s! And there are some women who can’t move well either. I recently heard that they are recommending pole dancing for female bodybuilding contestants to assist them in their fluidity as well. So music is another part of what makes our bodies flow. It’s energy that connects with our energy, creating a beautiful dance. Ballet moves come alive with music of all types where those same moves alone are just pretty, those same moves become beautiful and moving when music is added. As always I hope you are allowing music to move your body and I hope to see you on a dance floor really soon. I will be in Europe for the next 6 weeks where I’ll be attending Amsterdam Pride, Prague Pride, Barcelona Circuit and Sitges Bear Week. I hope to bring back new information for us all, as my goal is to assist Palm Springs in becoming the happiest and healthiest gay community on the planet. Wish me luck! XOXO Jill, your Dancing Queen

5G TECHNOLOGY: FRIEND OR FOE? BY DANIEL CLEMENS

I recently saw a news report from KPIX Channel 5 in San Francisco that explored the potential health concerns of 5G cellphone towers. Fifth Generation (5G) wireless technology is the next step up from the 4G currently used in our cellphones. This step up includes a move towards millimeter wave technology, which is a higher frequency than even microwave. This translates to more towers closer together emitting high frequency, deeply penetrating electromagnetic waves. The benefits include extremely fast download speeds and it may usher in “the internet of things”, when all of our home electronics and appliances will be connected to the internet. This move to 5G will also begin the infrastructure needed for self-driving cars. The telecommunications industry is moving full steam ahead but the science they are using to justify its safety goes back to the 1990’s. Many prominent scientists from around the world are calling for more studies before this technology is implemented. Since it is illegal for local municipalities to halt cell phone tower installations, groups of people are doing their own research and taking a more cautious approach to this hi tech future. Based upon the results of a pilot health study, firefighters in Northern California used their lobbying power to ban new towers near and around the fire stations. Websites and YouTube contain abundant information for and against 5G. It may be worth the time to explore this debate and come to our own conclusions about the possible health risks of millimeter waves penetrating the human body. The unregulated growth of some past technologies has placed the health of the planet in urgent peril. We have only to look at Fukushima or global warming for references. The tobacco lobby insisted that smoking was safe for many years. The Federal Communications Commission’s OET Bulletin 56 clearly states that, “while the possibility of non-thermal biological effects may exist, whether or not such effects might indicate a human health hazard is not presently known, further research is needed…” So if you err on the side of safety first, and especially if you suffer from maladies like insomnia, headaches, ringing in the ears, or brain fog, please consider these easy ways to minimize exposure:

28 THESTANDARDPS.COM

CREATE A SAFE SLEEPING ENVIRONMENT It may not be a good idea to sleep with a phone in the bedroom. Cell phones and wireless phones emit strong radio frequency, electromagnetic radiation that interferes with sleep. USE THE SPEAKER OR WIRED HEADPHONES WHEN MAKING PHONE CALL Keeping a mobile phone away from the side of one’s head and away from direct contact with the body is just good self care. Most phones have a similar legal disclosure in the settings menu. TURN OFF WI-FI AND BLUETOOTH OR USE AIRPLANE MODE WHEN NOT NEEDED The radio frequency radiation of Wifi and Bluetooth continue to emit signals even when we are not using them. Simply turning them off stops this unnecessary pinging. TURN OFF WIRELESS ROUTERS AT NIGHT Like cell phones, routers continuously emit wireless radio frequencies. These are only useful when we need an internet connection, not while we’re sleeping. A convenient way to do this is to use a power strip with an on/off switch or an outlet timer. There is no need to worry about entering passwords or establishing connections in the morning. Once turned on, all modems reconnect all of your devices automatically. KEEP PERSONAL ELECTRONICS AWAY FROM INFANTS AND TODDLERS

It is well documented that the soft tissue and developing brains of small children are much more vulnerable to radiation of any kind. Once, started, these simple steps become a habit, and a satisfying sense of control over how we choose to use our devices is established. Consumer protection seems to be a relic of the 60’s and 70’s so it is up to each individual to do some homework and decide just how much new technology is safe in our homes and on our persons. The issue of privacy is also a concern. “The internet of things” means that corporations will receive data collected by everything from our refrigerators, to our smart meters, to our selfdriving cars. Companies like Google and Apple will control and track the movements of our vehicles. Even now, our cellphones take our fingerprints and mugshot our faces. Some will see this as a Terminator-like battle of man against machine. Others may see a bright doorway to the future. But many are somewhere in the middle; cautiously optimistic. PSP FOCUS PALM SPRINGS GAY MEN’S CHORUS TO HOLD AUDITIONS FOR 21ST SEASON

The Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus (PSGMC) will be holding open call auditions August 27 at 7:00p.m. at the Mizell Senior Center, 480 South Sunrise Way in Palm Springs. This special evening of camaraderie will also be an opportunity to volunteer and get involved with one of the chorus’ many committees. Interested singers can also attend open rehearsals on August 13 and 20 at 7:00p.m. to experience what it is like to perform with the chorus and meet its members. PSGMC continues to “Build a Chorus Like No Other,” with a commitment to a high standard of excellence in their performances. In the audition process, PSGMC will be recruiting singers for the main chorus, but also for their small ensemble group “The Arrangement.” “The “Sing With Us” campaign stems from the chorus’ tight knit group of men who are passionate about performing and entertaining at civic and private events throughout the cities of the Coachella Valley. Singing with PSGMC gives everyone an amazing musical experience and a family of men to share their music with. The process is easy and requires the singer to match pitch, have a great smile and good stage presence,” said Douglas Wilson, Artistic Director, PSGMC. The chorus is an auditioned, volunteer choral ensemble consisting

of male singers age eighteen and older, gay or gay friendly. With a wide range of varying musical training and backgrounds, the chorus is committed to fostering an environment of professionalism, respect, pride and unity. The Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus is comprised of gay and straight-allied men of all ethnicities. As we grow our membership and continue to build diversity, we encourage the Trans Community, if you identify as a man and sing in the tenor or bass range, to audition for the chorus. The mission of the PSGMC is to be a chorus of gay men, who through musical excellence, community outreach, and civic responsibility, are dedicated to entertaining, inspiring, and educating the culturally diverse community in which we live. For more information on meeting the requirements and an application form https://psgmc.com/auditions/. For a variety of ways to support the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus, visit www. HOW TO CREATE A CHARCUTERIE BOARD FOR YOUR NEXT PARTY BY JUSTIN TILER

Planning a party doesn’t have to be difficult. Instead of agonizing over appetizers, opt for serving delicious wine with a charcuterie board - a variety of cured meats, cheeses and condiments that can range from simple to sophisticated. Even a fairly basic spread can look elegant, while providing your guests with inviting, impressive flavor combinations. Todd Knoll, executive chef at Jordan Vineyard & Winery, (www.winecountrytable.com) offers expert tips on combining select cured meats and cheeses with balanced wines to bring out the best in a charcuterie board. CHOOSE GREAT WINES To keep it simple, offer one red and one white. Choose wines to complement a range of flavors and seasonings in meats and cheeses, so you can offer an interesting variety to tempt your guests. Chardonnay is popular with wine lovers, and for good reason, with its crisp, fruity notes and vibrant acidity. Many traditional unoaked Chardonnays are lighter and so may not pair well with charcuterie,

34 THESTANDARDPS.COM

since salted and cured meats and aromatic cheeses have strong tastes that may overwhelm and diminish their delicate flavors. But some French oak-aged Chardonnays, such as Jordan, are created in a fruit-forward, elegant, lower-alcohol style, making them more robust and versatile than other varietals. A young Jordan Chardonnay can even complement most mild blue cheeses, Knoll says. Another great selection for charcuterie is Champagne, which has just the right acidity - and bubbles - to refresh the palate while sampling meats and cheeses with a higher fat and salt content. For a delicious red wine selection, Knoll recommends Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon. It pairs well with a wide range of meats and cheeses, due to its balance and elegance. Red wines containing a lot of alcohol and tannin pose a challenge to salty and/or spicy meats like salami and prosciutto. Salt accentuates alcohol, so combining salty food with high alcohol and tannin levels in a wine makes the wine taste hot and the meat even saltier. Because Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon has a fruit-forward flavor, good acidity, subtle tannins and lower

alcohol, it works well with charcuterie, providing an unexpectedly delicious flavor to complement many meats and cheeses. SELECT FLAVORFUL MEATS For a charcuterie board that is as Instagrammable as it is edible, provide a variety of contrasting flavors and textures, Knoll advises. This means choosing harder, salty and spicy cured meats, such as salami. Then add softer salted meats, such as thinly sliced prosciutto, for textural and flavor contrast. Finally, provide a creamy pate, terrine or rillette that guests can spread on bread or crackers. CHOOSE DELICIOUS CHEESES Offer guests a choice of flavors and textures that also complement the wine. Sheep’s milk cheeses, such as Roquefort, Manchego and Pecorino Romano, pair well with Cabernet Sauvignon, particularly cheeses that have been aged at least six months for complexity and nutty flavor. Firmer, more aged cow’s milk cheeses, such as Gouda and cloth-bound Cheddar, will complement a variety of Cabernet Sauvignon styles. Knoll says that firmer cheeses that have been aged longer have a milder, nuttier texture and smooth taste that highlight the oak and berry notes in Cabernet Sauvignon. A creamy Camembert is a good match with Chardonnay, as is Brie and other soft cheeses, according to Knoll. Chardonnay can also be paired successfully with creamy goat cheeses. Champagne complements washed rind cheeses such as Taleggio, Limburger and Epoisses, as its acidity cuts through the richness of these more pungent cheeses. ADD DELECTABLE CONDIMENTS A fabulous charcuterie board is not complete without an array of flavorful condiments. Source good mustard like whole grain Dijon,

Knoll advises, plus quince paste or pear mostarda. Add olives, fresh or dried fruit, nuts or pickles to taste, plus fresh, warmed crusty bread or crackers. WATCH YOUR TEMPERATURE The three essentials of a great charcuterie board - meat, cheese and wine - all shine when served at the proper temperature. Before guests arrive, chill white wines, which taste best when served at a temperature between 53 and 58 degrees. Serving Chardonnay too cold - a refrigerator is typically below 40 degrees - mutes the wine’s fruit flavors and aromas. Cabernet Sauvignon should be served between 60 and 65 degrees - below room temperature - and is best decanted to allow the wine to breathe, enhancing the wine’s aromas and flavors. Cheeses should warm to room temperature for best flavor, while meats should be cold. Designing your platter Slice different shapes and sizes of the cheeses and meats to provide visual interest, such as triangles, squares and rectangles for cheeses, and circles, rosettes and folded triangles for meats. Spend time arranging the elements in different areas, coupling colors and textures to create a fancy platter far superior to store-bought versions. Place condiments and nuts in small, colorful dishes atop the board for convenience and color contrast. Add fresh herbs or edible flowers for garnish. Parties can be more relaxing - and delicious - with an easyto-prepare, delightful charcuterie board and good wine. TRANSCENDENCE

ON SOUND, AND ITS THOUSAND ITERATIONS BY CHRISTINA VRONAY RUGGLES

As a kid, I never really listened to music. I was just apathetic to the whole racket often presented to me. Which really weirded out my Mom, who was, and still is, very musically cool. I mean she essentially raised me on a steady diet of Alanis Morissette, Beastie Boys, and Twisted Sister. Hell, she started taking me and my sister to rock shows starting around when we were 10 to 12 years old. As a rebellious and awful child, I mostly refused to participate in those outings in any way that didn’t involve me complaining. Ever the curmudgeon I was, even if I liked the sonic slip’n’slide coming my way. We’ve all gotta have a rebellious streak, right? And when your Mom is cool, rebelling means being un-cool, right? RIGHT? But around 13 years old I finally started to listen to music. Like, actively try and find music, for me and nobody else. I think Judas Priest’s song “Painkiller” was one of, if not the first, songs I listened to and fell in love with. I discovered it by playing Rockband with my—you guessed it! —Mom! I don’t have too much shame about my entire musical journey starting with a videogame designed to sell overpriced, mostly useless instrument controllers to the masses. I have

36 THESTANDARDPS.COM

about the same amount of shame over that fact, as I do over the fact that all my serious relationships started over Tinder. So, you know, none whatsoever. But, ya, Judas Priest. It took me a few years to learn that Rob Halford, their lead singer, was an out and proud gay man (nowadays). A real OG on that front. I swear, I’ll never get over the fact that metalhead fashion was in part spawned by one man wanting to have an excuse to meet and fool around with other men. Being queer is all about starting a fashion trend and a generationstriding aesthetic to cover up your extensive deep diving into hook-up culture. An aesthetic that, by the way, I still wholeheartedly embrace today. Honestly, embracing metalhead aesthetic from both ends of the gender spectrum has been a really great time, lemme tell you. Apparently, it’s attractive on both ends! (I say, sweating, staring at my goth/metalhead/absolute nerd girlfriend.) I mean it though, my leather jacket remains a wardrobe stable even now (with a few extra gay and trans sprinkles to show that, you know, I’m family and that yes, ladies that like semi-butch women in

leather jackets should absolutely ogle me!) My personal journey with music may have started in my teens with Judas Priest, but my personal relationship with music has gone on much longer. Singing and dancing, simply expressing and venting my joie de vivre alongside the company of a beat or a melody, that relationship is a long-going thing, I think? I have terrible memory. I would love to say I’ve been dancing and singing my heart out since I was a wee lil’ lass, but I don’t think that’s quite true. I know I used to cry hysterically at the song “Hey there Delila” because it reminded me of my Dad saying goodbye to me, and then me not seeing him for months, if not years. I know I used to get all mad and jealous at my sister whenever she danced and sung loudly. Her locking herself up in her room, blasting music and singing along, was a common event during our shared childhood. I don’t think I ever really joined her. Though, I adopted her habit of listening to an earworm over and over and over and over and over and over again whenever I get into a melancholic mood. Hell, I know I need to do a mental health checkup with myself if I end up wanting to listen to the same song nonstop. I think my longest record for the same song is 4 or 5 days. I would like to take this time to thank UC Davis for putting me in such an emotional back-alley. I want to say it was either Soup, by Girlpool, or Volcano, by Tacocat. Couldn’t tell you. But what a funk I was in! And music helped me wallow in it all when I needed to. Helped me freeze everything else out, to have a constant in a sea of turmoil. I knew that whenever I was home, or in my car, or with my phone and earbuds, I could hear that song. I could hear that song and stay in the emotional safety blanket it wrapped me in. Because, at this point in my life, music is a VERY emotional thing to me. When I hear it, it lights up my imagination, bringing up immediate images and daydreams. From waves to dance parties to romantic candle-lit dinners, music summons things into my imagination. Often original things. Music helps me feel confident. Helps me feel loved. Helps me be me. These days’ thinking about my history with music is a surreal experience. From tuneless little curmudgeon man to karaokeloving, indie punk finding, show going, part-time-celibate groupie, uninhibited-dancing woman, music and me have had quite a ride. From falling asleep at a marriage proposal/rock show to being told by one of my favorite rock stars that she misses my girl and me. That’s what we in the TransitionTM industry call growth. I know I focused a lot on my Mom, but my Dad also contributed with a consistent stream of Punk classics, I just have 1000 words and a story I wanna tell, ya know? P.S.: Sometimes I’m surprised at how self-centered this column is, but it’s also a great place for me to reflect on the giant overarching change/not-change that my transition is. Lots of these thoughts are just my normal life, but I’m transgender, and a lot of you—readers—may not be. I hope y’all find this revealing and educational in some way.
