DELICIOUS TRENDS BY CHEF ANDRE CARTHEN
Today’s food trends are more inline with a fashion jungle profile. What was hot yesterday, might kill you today. Not so long ago, everyone was pushing ORGANIC. What was supposingly better for you, could kill your bank account. Then came SUPERFOODS and KALE, the new end all, be all. Kale Cesar Salads, kale chips, kale lasagna, kale smoothies, and kale pesto are just a few kale concoctions that were the craze. Fast forward, it’s as if the culinary world was on a mad treasure hunt for finding the most under used, bland, non-discript vegetable we could be found…. Spotlight - ‘CAULIFLOWER’. What was once counted among the left-over sad veggies on the crudités

platter, has now become the DIVA of the garden, with celebrities and chefs applauding its versitability and nutritious benefits. I recall surprising guest by substituting mashed garlic cauliflower for mashed garlic potatoes for many a Thanksgiving Dinner, now seem so passé with the introduction of cauliflower rice, cauliflower steaks and get this, cauliflower pizza crust wowing the tastebuds of unsuspecting dinner guest. Today’s trend less subtle, went right for the jugular; Plant-based Proteins! No sneaky introductions it went full-out commercial, the no-meat ‘Whooper’. If you haven’t tasted it yet , you certainly have seen the ads for it and the plant-based
breakfast sandwiches. When we think about it, there really should be no surprise, our diets in resent years have been plant focus with gluten, peanuts and sugar being major concerns. Enter ‘Flour Power’ with flavor profiles ranging from almond, spelt, buckwheat, oat and rice to soy, chickpea, cauliflower and potato. I will admit, the flour profiles can be fun if you enjoy baking and have a whim for trying new flavor combinations. The sugar/sweeteners trend is and has always been geared toward natural; raw Honey, Stevia, Dates, Coconut Sugar, Monk Sugar, Banana Purée and Yacon Syrup lead the pack.

Other trends are Healthy Food Bowls with a focus on noodles & veggies with a sweet chili flavor profile. Healthy Kid Meals and Eco-friendly Packing. The old but new hot trend is Intermittent Fasting and DASH diet. Both focus more on eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, good oils and regulating sugar, salt intake and time of day. My top two trends are Oat Milk and the Classic Cocktails with a new twist craze! Knowing me, it’s no wonder both are liquid forms LOL. In this fast pace world I’m a sucker for a great protein drink and oat milk offers a delicious nutrition heart healthy base. Maybe not as healthy but certainly as flavorful and more fun!

On the other end of the adult spectrum, today’s classic cocktails are even more plant-based, adding herb infused alcohol blends to their profiles. The major trends are heathy, home and simple and no one gives it style and fashion like Global Kitchen Concepts ki (globalkitchenconcepts.com), leading the way in innovating award winning kitchen and storage design. From self-raising countertops to under-the-counter compartment storage containers, your kitchen should offer healthy storage to match your healthy life-style. THE FUTURE OF FOOD
INCREASED AUTOMATION Now that automated dining experiences are becoming more common, get ready to see more bots next year. These won’t be your average face-recognizing automatons or AI-powered ordering systems in fast food restaurants, but robots that actually make your food, delivering room service in hotels, and “self-driving” bots taking orders plus escorting customers to specific tables at sit down restaurants. With this new generation of gadgets entering the workforce, it’s no wonder why according to a recent article at the New York Times, hotel employees around the world are become increasingly concerned by their new rivals and would take job security over higher wages. MORE PEOPLE WILL EAT AT HOME Why eat out when there are plenty of reasons to eat in? Given the increasing prices of food away from home versus the steady prices in supermarkets, more diners will stay home in 2019. According to NPD, half of the people’s dining expenses are spent eating out, yet 82% of the meals are prepared at home. Increasing rent, wages, tight finances and higher US tariffs are also notable factors. Yet, pricing aside, another reason is that millennials—a 75 million market segment—are unafraid to cook. A study by Better Homes & Gardens indicates that 93% of millennials spend four nights a week dining in. And let’s not forget the popularity of meal kits, better supermarket prepared food, and Netflix binge, which collectively contribute to this defining trend. MAINSTREAMING OF MARIJUANA As marijuana becomes legal in more jurisdictions in North America, there will be a big consumer shift from sodas and beers to hemp and marijuana drinkables. Now, understand that this pertains to Cannabidiol or CBD from hemp that can mellow you out and perhaps
10 THESTANDARDPS.COM
relieve pain; not the THC compound from marijuana leaves that will get you high. Obviously, not everyone will jump on board right away. Early adopters will likely be millennials, followed by vegans and vegetarians, Wall Streeters, and the wellness crowd. The mainstreaming of marijuana will be found in restaurants and bars—with chefs putting together CBD tasting dinners and mixologists crafting CBD cocktails. RISE OF LAB-GROWN, “MOTHERLESS” MEAT Plant-based diets are still going strong in 2019—in a different way. Rather than eating meat the traditional style, there will be more lab-grown meats and related proteins that will change how you (and very likely self-proclaimed carnivores) see food. Here’s an oversimplified way to describe the concept: You pluck a cell or two from an animal instead of killing it, then breed it on an enormous scale. While the jury is still out on its taste, green supporters will love all the potential benefits—elimination of ranches and slaughterhouses, reduction of greenhouse gases and energy consumption, just to name a few. Foreseeably, there will be pushback. Given dairy sales are hurt by the success of faux milk, ranchers are launching campaigns to prevent these engineered proteins from being called “meat” at all. SOUR RULES In terms of trendy flavor, next year is all about sour. Thanks to the popularity and influence of Korean, Filipino and Persian cuisines, expect more and more sour elements on the plate. For instance, there are kimchee tacos, quesadillas, mac-and-cheese and ice cream in Koreaninspired “new” American dishes; vinegar-based recipes, marinades and sauces on Filipino menus; and plenty of tartness from calamansi, rhubarb, sour oranges, tamarind and pomegranate in Persian restaurants.

HOTTEST KITCHEN INNOVATIONS FROM THE KITCHEN & BATH INDUSTRY SHOW 2020 BY CJ THOMAS
Today’s home chefs want - and expect - more from their kitchens than ever before. To optimize their culinary and entertaining skills, they seek exciting new ways to push the boundaries of what they can do at home. These forward-thinking cooks also aim to prepare meals efficiently, using the best high-tech advances available. In fact, a new study conducted by The Research Institute for Cooking & Kitchen Intelligence reveals that kitchen designers have seen increased demand for dual-fuel appliances in the past year and that convection and induction cooking are on the rise. Kitchen innovations on display at North America’s premier kitchen design show, the 2020 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show, offer a window on the latest technology to help home chefs achieve their culinary dreams. As best-selling cookbook author, educator and host of the “True to Food” film series, Mark Bittman observes, “The more people cook, the more interested people become in their kitchens. When you’re interested in your kitchen, you’re exploring: What can make this easier? What can make this more fun? What can make me a better cook? Appliances are certainly a part of that.”
12 THESTANDARDPS.COM
Top appliance makers are bringing elements of professionalquality kitchens into the home, with some now catering to a new generation of forward-thinking home chefs known as “Technicureans.” SOUS VIDE COOKING Once limited to professional chefs, sous-vide is a cooking technique that utilizes precise temperature control to deliver consistent, restaurant-quality results. Sous-vide has been the go-to method in some of the world’s best restaurants for years, and for good reason: it brings food to the precise temperature chefs look for and delivers perfect doneness, edge-to-edge, every time for a variety of foods like steak, chicken, fish and more. Luxury kitchen appliance brands are bringing sous-vide to home chefs. For example, Signature Kitchen Suite offers the industry’s first pro-ranges with built-in sous-vide right on your cooktop - in addition to induction and gas - culinary game-changers for today’s foodies. With these 48- and 36-inch dual-fuel pro ranges and even new range tops with built-in sous-vide, more individuals can bring restaurant-quality results to their home kitchens.
CUTTING-EDGE FOOD STORAGE OPTIONS The best chefs start with the freshest ingredients. That’s where the importance of food storage comes in. Don’t want cool air escaping while finding what you want in the fridge? With InstaView technology from LG, knock twice on the glass panel to see inside before opening. You can also store frequently used items in an adjustable bin; the Doorin-Door design lets you keep cold air in while quickly selecting them. MIXOLOGY MASTERED Whether you love crafting cocktails or just want unique ice options, the InstaView Refrigerator with Craft Ice is the first to create automatically large, slow-melting spherical ice, without the hassle of molds. At two inches in diameter, Craft Ice enables you to keep your drink at the perfect temperature without watering it down. You can also choose cubed or crushed ice. Its new water dispensers also accommodate just about any size glass or bottle. Use the Measured Fill feature to dispense exact amounts of filtered water (4, 8, 16 or 32 ounces). SMART TECHNOLOGY A top trend seen in many KBIS 2020 kitchen appliances, including dishwashers, refrigerators and ovens, is more precision in terms of automation, plus connectivity to consumers. Top appliances today use the latest technology to calculate the exact amounts needed for each task, whether that means specific detergent amounts, humidity or temperature controls. Thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity, many manufacturers make it possible for you to control and monitor your smart appliances from anywhere, using your virtual assistant or phone. SINK INNOVATIONS Kitchen designers also showcased innovations to help home cooks clean up and access water quickly and easily. The Best of KBIS 2020 includes everything from the latest in pull-out or pull-down faucets, faucets that respond to voice commands, advanced water filtration systems and sinks that double as work stations.
OUTDOOR COOKING OPTIONS Another trend celebrated at KBIS 2020 is the elevation of the outdoor grill. Certainly not your father’s grill, the latest models for outdoor cooking are not only elegant and sturdy in construction, but also allow for cooking at different levels, with the ability to vary the distance between the food and the heat source.

FOOD & GIVING ARE ALWAYS IN STYLE FOOD, DESIGN AND DINING OUT FOR LIFE BY DANN FOLEY
I have written about food, design and lifestyle monthly for our readers for a few years now. Each time the National, Dining Out For Life event rolls around we are all given the opportunity to not only partake and share in the best the Valley has to offer but, those lucky enough to be celebrating the day in Palm Springs can be a part of one of the largest Dining Out For Life experiences in North America! This is a moment to share in the great community pride of place. The greater Palm Springs raises more money than cities much larger than our own. Our residents and visitors spend and donate more money in this one day than cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington DC. In fact, our little hamlet is second in the nation to only Denver, a city of more than 4 million people. We are the smallest participating market but, our commitment to the DAP has brought us in at the top of the fundraising list for second year in a row in 2019. Let’s all make a commitment to raise even more money for this worthy Palm Springs based institution of health and humanity. To be clear, 100% of Dining Out For Life funds raised here is donated to the DAP for services. As one of the very top fundraisers,
18 THESTANDARDPS.COM
Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley reap the rewards of every dollar spent. The DAP receives all the of proceeds directly from participating partners. Each establishment gives anywhere from a minimum of 33% of the days take, up to some incredibly generous vendors who have actually pledged 200% of the day’s receipts. That means that some restaurants actually donate their entire days take and then match the amount! In many cases the wait staff actually donates a portion or all of their tips on that day as well. It is truly the definition of selfless generosity and we as a community should be very proud of everyone involved. The DAP has been an iconic organization of charity and care in our valley offering life-saving health services to the HIV/AIDS community for many years now. They continue to expand both their services and facilities with 2 new clinics opened just in the last month. Over 7,000 valley residents receive their primary health care from DAP and all of your Dining Out For Life dollars go directly to helping their clients. I have often written in these pages about how food creates a sense of beauty, community and style. I equate good design and
good food as an essential piece of the Living Well mantra that I espouse every day to my clients. Dining Out For Life is an opportunity for us to choose everything from cafes, to diners, restaurants, bars, bakeries and even food vendors to partake in the experience and spectacle of the food experience. The array of choices for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and snacks on April 30th is as diverse as the offerings themselves. The DAP’s new tag line is, “Eat. Drink. Give.” What a fitting moniker for a day and night of food, friends, community and sharing. Every type of food, every kind of food experience and every price point is part of the Dining Out For Life event. You can choose any meal, at any time of day, as simple or as elaborate as you choose. You were going out to eat and you were spending the money anyway, why not do it on a day when you can indulge yourself and give to others at the same time? How about buying a cupcake at a participating bakery and taking the opportunity to say, thank-you for participating. The moment is both selfless and selfish because you get to give and enjoy.
Each location gives diners who make any purchase a special sticker to proudly wear and let everyone know you care. Many diners over the years have started their own groups to eat out each meal, snack and/or cocktail that day in different establishments and see just how many “badge of honor” stickers they can accumulate. There are so many ways to participate and just as many ways to immerse yourself in the Palm Springs food scene. I wouldn’t be “me”, if I didn’t offer you a few of my favorite goto spots where food, ambiance, design and service come together to offer a transformative experience, with the added benefit of giving to those in need on April 30th. I know my favorites but, this year I thought it would be fun to include a list that I complied with the help of my design partner, Beau Stinnette and our friend Steve Henke, Director of Community Development for the DAP and favorite “guyabout-town”. You can look for Steve all day and night on April 30th, starting at 5 am on our local NBC station KESQ. He will be circling the city throughout the day thanking diners, staff, owners and helping to celebrate this amazing day.

But I digress, let’s get to the restaurants that give from their hearts every day and offer us even more reason to partake during Dining Out For Life. The following list is in no particular order… DEL RAY. Tucked inside the Villa Royal hotel, this eatery is warm, luxurious and invites diners to linger and relax in intimacy and authentic Palm Springs style. The small plates are a great way to experience the menu. PAUL BAR. A local’s favorite, where you are transported from an unassuming strip mall to intimate lounge for drinks and dining. Everything from burgers to an Old Fashion cocktail. It is worth the search, just google the address! AZUCAR. The newly built restaurant pavilion inside the 1930’s era La Serena Villas hotel is a must. The food, the design, the roof top terrace for drinks, dining and mingling, this is the place to be as the sun dips behind the mountains. TAC/QUILA & FARM. 2 completely different dining experiences in downtown Palm Springs from the same brilliantly creative restauranteurs. Each location serves breakfast, lunch & dinner. Fabulous food, locally sourced, live music and unsurpassed ambiance makes both locations a must for locals and visitors. FOUR SAINTS. The glam rooftop restaurant at the Kimpton Rowan hotel offers up a lively bar scene and a warm modern and clubby style dining room with memorable food, service and unsurpassed views of our San Jacinto Mountains. ROOSTER & THE PIG. The space is clean, modern and simple yet, inviting and welcoming (I am giving kudos to the staff), where a menu of rotating small plates keeps locals coming back like the love for a local diner. Don’t miss their latest expansion with a lounge lit

by dozens of Japanese lanterns and votive candles. Expect to wait for a table…and it’s worth it! 849. A mandatory stop in the Palm Springs design district will give the ultimate Palm Springs experience. Housed in Palm Springs first U.S. Post Office building it is now a bright lively meeting place for the fabulous. Do not miss the incredible sugar high you will get from the in-house/homemade desserts by co-owner and pastry chef, Albert Gonzalez. THE PURPLE PALM. Another secret hotel restaurant inside the historic Colony hotel. Imagine 1930s Hollywood hidden away in Spanish Moroccan style bungalows and behind sunglasses poolside. The restaurant is open the pool area which makes the gossip and the scene as lively as the food. This is list by no means of all the wonderful eateries in and around Palm Springs. I encourage you all to visit the website, www.diningoutforlife.com/palmsprings to see all of the incredibly generous participating partners. Stop in as many restaurants as you can that day and say thank you for participating. Buy something to eat or drink, make a donation in the special envelopes provided at every location and earn a chance to win some truly wonderful prizes. Seek out the DAP volunteers in their colorful aprons at many of the restaurants and learn more about the incredible work done every day at their locations. April 30th is a day to Eat. Drink. Give.

BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER You can’t pretend forever. Eventually, the ruse gets tired, holding up pretenses becomes a burden, and keeping the game going is harder than telling the truth. You eventually have to break it down and let people know what you’re about. But as in the new book “How We Fight for Our Lives” by Saeed Jones, take care before telling everybody. Saeed Jones was just twelve years old when his mother first uttered the word “gay,” though he never thought it would be anything she’d ever say. Afterward, the word was “vibrating in the air between us” but there’d be no conversation. Jones knew even then that the word described him. Fascinated by men, he spent hours clipping pictures of male models from his mother’s fashion magazines, and he furtively read everything about gay men and AIDS that he could find at his local Texas library. The library was also where he had his first sexual encounter with a stranger, at age 16. That, too, was something he’d never tell his mother but he sensed she knew his truth: some days, he’d find his clippings in shreds, in a plastic bag on the kitchen counter, and he’d just start another collection. There was no discussion then, either. By the time he graduated from high school, Jones knew that his life was not “twenty minutes north of Dallas” anymore. He envisioned himself walking around Manhattan, exploring the city, and he aimed for college there but it wasn’t financially possible. Instead, he went to Bowling Green, Kentucky, and he thrived. On his own for the first time ever, Jones realized he could be any Saeed Jones he wanted to be, but ultimately, he was freest being his gay self. Away from home, he made friends, joined college groups, drank too much, slept with men he barely knew, and he learned that “the words ‘gay’ and ‘alone’ weren’t synonyms for each other.” And then one night, he went home with the wrong man… On so many levels, “How We Fight For Our Lives” is a heartbreaking and beautiful book. The most unforgettable parts lie where author Saeed Jones writes about more than just himself and his own observations; a good portion of his tale is his mother’s. She recognized her son’s life but she obviously struggled with knowing-not-knowing and there’s a sharp pain in that, pain that leaps from the pages. The bulk of this story – the part that seizes readers by the shirtfront – is spent watching Jones come to terms as he comes of age. Seeing him grow from self-absorbed young man into selfconfident adult is satisfying, albeit cringe-worthy, because you come
to understand what beats him back as well as what makes his spirit soar. Knowing all that happens between the two is what’ll keep you turning pages. Be aware that this memoir can be raw, in both language and meaning, and there are graphic bits inside. Still, the power you’ll see in “How We Fight for Our Lives” will make you want to tell everybody. “How We Fight for Our Lives: A Memoir” by Saeed Jones c.2019, Simon & SchusteR $26.00/ $32.00 Canada 193 pages

PLEASE UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH DANGER WE ARE IN BY LEE LYNCH
My sailor friend e-mailed me last night. She had just gotten home from her women’s group where they discussed the fears engendered by the state of our nation. Only they didn’t use the term state of our nation, they used the word “coup.” Another friend writes a valuable Word Press blog titled “Nel’s New Day.” Ever since the presidential election of 2016 she’s been, almost daily, gathering information about the person she calls DDT, or, Dictator Donald Trump. Dictator? Coup? Are they talking about the United States of America? Coup is a word that goes back to 1572 in its usage as coup d’état, according to Merriam Webster. Their definition of coup is “a brilliant, sudden, and usually highly successful stroke or act.” While the outcome of the 2016 election was not brilliant in the least, it was sudden and is still coming at us like a freight train with failing brakes. Rachel Maddow, on her TV show, unearthed a brief essay by Masha Gessen from the November 11, 2016 issue of the “New York Review of Books.” Gessen is a Russian American journalist and LGBTQ activist who suggested an alternative concession speech Clinton might have offered (https://bit.ly/38rR2nl). Gessen warned us about dangers to watch for once our own “autocrat-elect” took office, based largely on Gessen’s experience of living under the Putin regime. She wrote, and explained with unsurprising prescience, the following: “Rule #1: Believe the autocrat. He means what he says. Rule #2: Do not be taken in by small signs of normality. Rule #3: Institutions will not save you. Rule #4: Be outraged. Rule #5: Don’t make compromises. Rule #6: Remember the future. Nothing lasts forever.” In particular, too many people have given Mister Trump, once in office, the benefit of the doubt. Small signs of normality, to our naturally hopeful American hearts, have delayed the comeuppance he needs. Today, for example, the attorney general appointed by Mister Trump, complained about “presidential” tweets interfering with his ability to do his job. Not long afterward, the Republican
24 THESTANDARDPS.COM
Senate, under Mitch McConnell, actually voted to limit a president’s war powers regarding Iran. Didn’t that make a scrap of hope float by like ash in the wind? Our laws, our constitution, our regulatory departments, our military, our very sense of fairness—have been all too successfully attacked by an administration with the ethics and the blood lust of an invasive Florida python. How can we believe you, A.G. Barr, when you’ve been toady to a totalitarian? How can we trust that the senators who couldn’t find a compelling need to impeach Mister Trump have suddenly seen the danger of this illegally elected tyrant? I may only have the power of my vote, but at least I’m on our side. Author Renee Bess first brought the question of Michael Bloomberg’s viability as a presidential candidate to my attention in a Facebook post. An NPR podcast suggested that choosing a billionaire to fight another billionaire would at least be fighting fire with fire. We have other options. Amy Kobluchar belongs to a Christian church that has not only been LGBTQ friendly since the 1970s, but a true ally. Elizabeth Warren is strong feminist and an upstanding defender of economic equality. Mayor Pete has a fresh mind smart enough to know what he doesn’t know and to appoint advisors, not sycophants, to guide him. I would trust an old white Democratic Socialist to make a dent in turning our country around. If primary voters get behind the seemingly reasonable Tom Steyer, let’s go for it. I regret losing the talents and skills of candidates of color Andrew Yang, Kamala Harris, and Cory Booker. To me, the bottom line of Mister Trump’s election was racism. The so-called browning of America terrifies many citizens. Xenophobia is just another word for it. This nation can’t be a melting pot, an attribute of which we were once proud, without adding a variety of ingredients. I worry more about overpopulation worldwide than accepting immigrants. About corporations that possess the rights of human beings more than blending skin colors. Point being, we cannot afford to take stands like: no more old white men, Bernie or Bust, gays against Pete, or to protest the selection of candidates by declining to vote at all. That’s cost us our Democracy. Not only do we have to hold back the tide of FOX-schooled Trumpers and foreign and domestic election rigging, we need to look within our own pro-democracy and progressive ranks, quit the quibbling, and create a unified voting bloc that will say no forever to autocracy and wanna-be dictators. Let’s undo this coup before our institutions completely crumble at our fussy little feet. If we can. Gessen said in an interview that she read the Mueller Report as a story of “swindlers and hustlers and con men.” I suspect the sailor, the blogger, Renee Bess, Rachel Maddow, and Masha Gessen might agree that our first priority must be: “Throw the bums out.”

ASTRID OVALLES’ AWARDWINNING FEATURE FILM ROAD OF BYGONES COMING TO AMAZON BY MONA ELYAFI
Award-winning writer, actress, and filmmaker Astrid Ovalles has a lot to be grateful for these days! Her latest kinky dark comedic feature length drama, Road of Bygones, is set to be released on Amazon March 15th 2020. Road of Bygones tells the story of three women who embark on a road trip to retrieve the ashes of a figure from the past. Hoping to find closure at their destination, the women are confronted with a series of self-destructive, sometimes hilarious, events that threaten to destroy all harmony between them. A journey of laughter and melancholy in the slice-of-life of wonderfully flawed characters. Written and directed by Astrid Ovalles, the film stars Sarah Jo Ovalles, Oriana Oppice and Astrid Ovalles. Road of Bygones tackles the taboo topic of BDSM and kink relationships breaking the stigma typically associated with both terms. In fact, Ovalles masterfully goes where no other filmmakers have gone before effectively normalizing this taboo sexual practice. Yet Road of Bygones is above it all a beautiful story about humanity. Venezuelan-born actor, writer, and director, Astrid Ovalles debuted her film career with the award-winning and globally acclaimed short film “Camp Belvidere.” The New Yorker and founder of Recluse Films splits her time between film and painting.
26 THESTANDARDPS.COM
She continues to collaborate with filmmakers in front of the camera as an actor and behind it as a writer, director, editor, and colorist. Her goal is to use heart and innovation in the film medium to share powerful, human stories that benefit minorities by bringing them to the forefront of her work. We caught up with the incredibly talented Ovalles to learn more about the film, her career and the upcoming Amazon release. - How did the idea for Road of Bygones come to life? Oriana and I had done a scene in acting class where we played sisters, and the chemistry felt addicting to both of us. After that scene, I brainstormed for years about the scene and how to build upon that chemistry. I also wanted to do something with D/s (Domination and submission) relationships, something blatant. So, I thought I would put these three women in a place where the option to leave the room was not available, and let them get into inevitable trouble. I had also seen a lot of shows that made D/s relationships stem from a place of abuse, and being a dominant myself, I felt like this film would present an opportunity to have a healthy D/s lifestyle represented on screen, especially within the lesbian and bisexual community. I feel as though D/s people don’t have a seat at the LGBT table. To me, “Road of Bygones” felt like an opportunity to begin breaking that stigma. - Why was it important for you to make this movie? I usually don’t care much for autobiographical work. Unfortunately, we still have a long way to go before non-vanilla people don’t have to tiptoe around the nature of our relationships. I was welcomed with open arms after our first lesbian movie (a rather vanilla romance), but
once Sarah (who plays Ally and is also my wife) and I came out as D/s, a lot of people in the lesbian and bisexual community harassed us online, saying we were “sick” and claimed that the premise of being a submissive woman was rooted in anti-feminism. Quite a low blow for a feminist like myself. In a way, our own community treated us in the same way they ask not to be treated. So, it felt like we had a responsibility to educate people about this dynamic through our work, as well as to include D/s lesbians and bisexuals in film, so that people like us felt as though there was no need to hide because we were celebrating them. - What makes this film a MUST-SEE? It’s different, it’s innovative, it’s exciting. I watch a lot of lesbian cinema because I am as starved for content as the next lesbian. However, I crave more than romance stories. I crave stories of all kinds that happen to have lesbians and bisexuals as leads, I assume members of the audience feel the same and would like the same variety. “Road of Bygones” will make you laugh, cry, question things about yourself and perhaps give you a taste of what it’s like to be honest about relationships that differ from the norm. It’s a good time! It’s also worth noting that all leading ladies identify as lesbian and queer, which is rare. - Message wise, what do you hope viewers will leave with? I hope viewers have a unique experience watching “Road of Bygones,” something different from the “two girls aren’t allowed to be together but they’re gonna do it anyway!” story. I certainly hope they laugh! It’s unfortunate that one still has to make a film with a message.

FILM
Maybe one day we’ll be able to make films to simply tell stories and not to educate or defend ourselves from criticism. However, in the state we’re in (socially), I hope this film humanizes D/s relationships and kinksters, especially those within the LGBTQ community who get ousted by the self-righteous. More than anything, I hope people leave the film with the understanding that different is beautiful, that complicated relationships exist, and that with consent and communication we can be open about our desires in the search for companionship. - What does the film offer in terms of perspective for the LGBTQ community that other films don’t? “Road of Bygones” is very unique, in fact, I don’t even like the fact that I had to choose a genre for it. First of all, it’s funny. You will laugh, even when perhaps it seems inappropriate to do so. But it’s ok! Because it’s rooted in dark comedy. It’s also a one-ofa-kind drama. Things happen that you don’t typically see happen. Our characters have visible, palpable flaws, yet you care for them. They aren’t good or bad, they are human. Our cast is queer on and off screen!! We know it’s important to the audience, so we made it happen. “Road of Bygones” gives insight on a taboo topic that’s typically exaggerated and portrayed with ignorance. We walk the walk when it comes to D/s. We’ve been told that people think about the film long after they’ve viewed it, and we’re taking that to the bank. Feel-good art is all well and good. But a film that leaves you thinking, fantasizing, wishing, and questioning is a rarity. - How does your Latin heritage influence your art? As a Latin woman how do you see the LatinX community connect with the film? Sometimes, I don’t even notice my heritage in my work until I’m asked to think about it. I know in hindsight that the scene in the
28 THESTANDARDPS.COM
church was a way to rebel against the turmoil and self-loathing I had as a teenager raised with Catholic ideologies. With this film in particular, it was important to me that Sam and Bobbi preserved their strong bond despite their flaws, because in my culture, family is everything. We have several LatinX fans who are simply happy to see a South American woman direct and produce films. I think even more so than LGBTQ North American audiences, Hispanic audiences lack representation in the LGBTQ community and in general. I’m not interested in stereotyping my culture or clumping all countries south of Texas into one box because Latin America is beautifully diverse. But I do plan on highlighting the beautiful memories I have of South America in my work moving forward. - What’s next for you? We have already begun writing our next feature film. Three of us lezzies (Cara Kilduff, Sarah J. Lucey, and myself) are writing it. It’s going to be a fantasy/drama which we’ll be approaching differently than our past works. Of course, it’s a lesbian story but it is also much more than that. I think of it as a breath of fresh air. We will be filming it over the span of a year using mixed media and music much more prevalently than before. At this stage, I’m reluctant to say anything about the plot, but I can tell you that with each film we’ve learned a lot about the craft and we’ve become very innovative. We’ve also gotten to know our audience because we speak to them personally. What we’re working on now is very dear to me, and perhaps what I’m most proud of to this day. If you follow me on social media, you’ll be sure to catch glimpses of it and witness its formation
The film will be available to rent/purchase on Amazon March 15, 2020. For more information go to: https://www.roadofbygones.com

SNAKE MEDICINE BY DANIEL CLEMENS, CMT
Since recorded history, going back to cave drawings and petroglyphs, the snake, serpent, or dragon has held a prominent place within art, medicine, sexuality, spirituality, and our conscious or unconscious mind. Hardly anyone has a neutral attitude toward the snake. Our Western culture rejects and reviles the snake. This is unfortunate. There are reasons why so many customs around the world hold the serpent in high regard. Arguably, the most common symbol of the snake represents rebirth or transformation. In order to grow, snakes shed their old skin. As human beings, we must do the same in a spiritual or psychological sense. We cannot grow while trapped in old patterns, constricted by ideas that are too tight and don’t fit us anymore. Wisdom is in knowing when to let go, break free and move into a new way of being. The snake helps to remind us of this transformation. Because serpents are secretive, rarely seen and sometimes dangerous, dreaming about snakes can open us up to some unfulfilled sexual impulses yearning for expression. Or these dreams can be a doorway into the subconscious mind. The part of us that goes beyond daily instinctual life and forms the deeper, more primal aspects of ourselves that rarely see the light of day.
32 THESTANDARDPS.COM
Profound fear of snakes can indicate a strict aversion to the more primordial, earthy parts of our personality. The parts that aren’t necessarily bad, but have been ruled by society as unacceptable. These feelings cannot be repressed forever and tend to express through destructive tendencies, mostly towards others. The famous psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Carl Jung wrote extensively about this “shadow” part of our psyche which waits in all of us. In Notes of the Seminars, Dr. Jung writes: “The serpent shows the way to hidden things and expresses the introverting libido, which leads man to go beyond the point of safety and beyond the limits of consciousness.” The symbol of the snake is also used in medicine. The American Medical Association logo shows the Rod of Asclepius. This is a staff or rod entwined by a serpent which was wielded by the Greek God of healing and medicine. Snakes were highly revered in ancient Greece. The serpent can heal but it can also kill with its venom. The alchemical nature of medications relate to snake venom in how dosage is key to the success or failure of a medicine. Drugs can cure, but they can also kill. Working with snake medicine or pharmaceuticals is a delicate business.
Another widely seen ancient serpent motif is the Uroboros which shows a snake eating its tail as a symbol of eternity, wholeness, infinity. As the snake sheds its skin, it is constantly transformed. The circular aspect of this image shows us that as one dies, one is immediately reborn, whether that death is physical or psychological. This powerful symbol is seen in cultures ranging from Native American to Nordic, South American, Australian, European, Mexican, Russian, etc. Its universal message is undeniable and widespread. Like sharks, our natural fear of snakes is justified, but through culture, religion and story telling, this reasonable aversion has become a phobia. Only a lack of understanding keeps us from harnessing the powerful messages and healing potential which is possible through a journey into snake medicine. TRANSCENDENCE
THE BREAKFAST CLUB, ON BENDERS AND AVOIDING OTHER’S FENDERS BY CHRISTINA H VRONAY RUGGLES
I’ll say it again, if I haven’t said it here that is, but there are few things I miss in Palm Springs. Besides my friends. And the sunsets. And the occasional windstorm, oddly enough. And the community of queer people. How interconnected everything was. But, and far most importantly, I miss the food the most. Mostly the brunch. It’s going to be hard to communicate how much I love breakfast as a meal. It has literally all the best foods. Pancakes, French Toast, Omelets, Hash browns, other types of potatoes, cereal, fruit chunks, yogurt, smoothies, scrambled eggs, and, trust me, the list goes on! Breakfast isn’t just the meal with the best foods, it’s the omni-meal. All foods can be breakfast foods, if you just try hard enough.
34 THESTANDARDPS.COM
And, in the case of many solid brunch spots in Palm Springs, so are mimosas. I mean, they’re a brunch staple everywhere. Maybe I just really got into brunch in Palm Springs (I mean I began meeting cool-brunch-addicted people at much higher rates in Palm Springs), maybe Palm Springs has amazing brunch spots. I’m not here to fight over what city is best for you and your brunch bunch. I’m just here to tell you I love brunch and that, one day, I’ll find a bottomless pancakes joint that also serves bottomless mimosas that isn’t just a Denny’s where I keep sneaking airplane bottles of vodka into my orange soda and calling it “good bubbly”. One day. But for now, in my current poverty of good brunch restaurants, up
here in my Northern California college town, I make myself brunch, although with a much more sober tilt. When I’m the one in charge of the food and the fire (or what regular adults with their life together may call a “gas powered stove”) I need to be at the top of my game, not white girl wasted on half a light-poor mimosa. But cooking breakfast sober isn’t that awful (am I coming off like an alcoholic?), in fact it’s the highlight of any day in which I whip up some (insert your favorite breakfast dish here, I’m not here to proselytize beyond “breakfast good”). It’s the joy of cooking and juggling several, very different, dishes. It’s juggling dipping French toast in crackling butter and greasy hash browns and cheesy scrambled eggs. It’s whipping up whipped cream. It’s pouring your favorite milk-like product into a bowl of cheerios or whatever we’re stuffing into our poor bodies that day. It’s cooking a full spectrum meal for you and your partner pants-less and knowing society can’t judge you, WON’T judge you for it (nudists, we know you’re ahead of the curve on this one, no need to rub our faces in anything thank you very much). There’s almost no such thing as a bad breakfast. Some may argue that the classic motel continental breakfast may leave some things to be desired, but I’ll just take my Costco brand muffin and my
bowl of Froot Loops in stride, like the adult woman I am. Breakfast is about flexibility. It’s about starting off your day correctly. It’s about making that day, this particular day, what you need it to be. Feeling lazy? Cereal! Raising a cadre of children needing to be rushed out of the house? Cereal! Feeling generous? Pancakes!(cereal may have been the comedic choice, but dear god I have principles!) Wanting to impress a hook-up/freshly slept over partner? Also pancakes! (This isn’t a bit, I’m just a firm believer in the power of pancakes in winning the hearts, minds, and stomachs of my fellow gays!) No matter what situation you’re going through in life, breakfast (or if it’s going really badly, brunch) always has some form of solution for your day. But I also eat (and hopefully not drink!) my feelings. So maybe I don’t have the soundest relationship advice when it comes to your relationship with food. What’s the food equivalent of breaking up with your ex and then drunk calling them on St. Patrick’s day, only to hook up with them the next week in a maneuver your best friend can only call “sloppy”? I’ll let y’all decide!

PSP FOCUS >> 2020 NCLR ANNUAL GARDEN PARTY… IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE
2020 is a time to celebrate! We cordially invite you to join the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) for our preeminent Palm Springs event, our annual Garden Party. Held at the historic WilliamHolden Estate, you’ll have an opportunity to meet our new Executive Director, Imani Rupert-Gordon, a visionary leader for the next chapter in the fight for LGBTQ justice and equality. As the first national LGBTQ organization founded by women, NCLR has grown into a fierce advocate for the entire LGBTQ community and one of our nation’s most aggressive and effective legal organizations, with a strong commitment to leaving no one behind. . In 1977, NCLR’s founders faced a legal landscape in which LGBTQ parents were losing custody of their children simply because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. In this atmosphere, NCLR was born – not just to win these battles but also to take down the pervasive stigma and stereotypes our community faced. Forty-three years later, NCLR is still taking on landmark cases on behalf of our families – with three U.S. Supreme Court victories over the past two years – while also fighting for the lives and safety of LGBTQ youth, transgender service members, and LGBTQ immigrants under the Trump Administration. Winning more than 400 asylum cases since 1994 – and having never lost one! – through our Asylum & Immigration Project, NCLR is committed to ensuring the United States continues to be a beacon of hope for LGBTQ DREAMers, asylum seekers, and immigrants. NCLR continues to be positioned as a national leader on the frontlines of the fight for justice and equality:
• Provide a national helpline for all LGBTQ people so no one in our community, no matter where they are in the country, is left behind in the fight for dignity and equality. • Work state-by-state to protect LGBTQ people from workplace discrimination. • Fight to end the practice of conversion therapy through our Born Perfect campaign. • Ensure access to medically necessary healthcare for transgender people, including through Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance policies.
• •
The Garden Party will be held on Saturday, April 4th, with a sponsor-only reception beginning at 4 PM and the party starting at 4:30 PM. For info and tickets visit www.NCLRights.org

Our Executive Director, Imani Rupert-Gordon, wrote in her first blog post: “We are able to do this work, because we stand on the shoulders of giants. We are able to work so thoughtfully in coalition with one another, because it’s been done before. I am humbled to build on the legacy of the leaders like Donna Hitchens and Kate Kendell who have been such fantastic stewards of this mission of this organization. I am proud to be a part of the fantastic work being led by leaders like Shannon Minter who is translating that mission into a groundbreaking legal, policy, and public education agenda”. She continued, ”Your sponsorship or ticket purchase will go directly to these activities. We are thrilled to return to Palm Springs again this spring to talk to you about our work, to celebrate our successes and with your support, continue to advance our agenda for equality”.

PSP FOCUS >> SEEING RED…BUT IN A GOOD WAY
Every now and then we stumble upon a tradition that just seems to fit perfectly with an occasion. Who could imagine a Christmas party without ugly sweaters?! Or, St. Patrick’s Day without green beer! Well, if you’ve spent much time in cities like Portland, San Diego, or Palm Springs in the last decade, you know that when the red dresses come out there’s a wild event with a great cause coming soon! Nine years ago, The LGBT Community Center of the Desert decided to host its own version of a party that has its origins in Portland, LA, and other major metropolitan areas for a couple decades. The theme: RED. Everyone in red dresses, or at least your best attempt at red chic, as a symbol of unity, solidarity, and community. And in the desert, the purpose is to raise support for The Center’s many LGBTQ programs and to celebrate our community, in community. In early years, the evening was held at a few of Palm Springs’ historical estates. That upstart, while humble, was undoubtedly fun, different, and an all-around great time. Year after year, and with the growth to go with it, RED DRESS/DRESS RED Party would become a

premiere event in the Palm Springs social scene. It eventually moved to larger venues including Ace Hotel & Swim Club and SnapShot Palm Springs… eventually moving to its current home, with the most stunning backdrop yet -- the Palm Springs Air Museum! This year’s line-up features the exceedingly popular crowdpleaser, DJ Galaxy and 1,500 other red-fanatics ready to have a ball! Whether they’re nibbling on tasty bites from our restaurant sponsors or dancing the night away, there’s a lot of fun to be had, all in a deep sea of red. What makes the Red Dress/Dress Red Dance Party so special that it has sold out consistently (this year, in just minutes)? There’s something special about skipping the stuffy suits or the uber-seriousness of blacktie or formal wear, in favor of something fashionable, comfortable, or just plain fun. A party where creativity is not only encouraged but nearly a pre-requisite, makes Red Dress/Dress Red a place where you want to be seen, and see others, exploring and playing in a sandbox

Barracuda KRISTINE W (THE ORCHARD) With the help of her producer, John Keenan, Kristine W manages to reframe this classic rock single, first released in 1977 by Heart, into a modern-day gem. They brilliantly keep the song’s original magic while adding a bit of dance influence into the production. The original was written as a testament to Heart’s anger towards the music industry. Kristine decided to add it to her Issues Episode 1: Love and Lies album because its message fit perfectly with the vibe of her album. The biggest challenge as matching Ann Wilson’s incredible vocals. Wilson was 18 when she recorded the Heart single, hitting notes in the stratosphere. Kristine admits it took her three sessions but she nails it big time. This is one of her standout singles.

Songs like “Have To Let You Go” (about his friend committing suicide) and “Hurting” (about a friend who loses his husband to illness) reflect on all aspects of loss: the emptiness, hopelessness and rejection, as well as the courage and strength it takes to persevere after saying goodbye. His uplifting messages throughout this impressively produced album is a reminder to reach out to friends who may be in trouble and make sure they are okay. “Como Tu,” a song about living your authentic self despite what others think of you — that Wils sings in Spanish! — is a particularly moving track that will make hearts gush.

Much like Taylor Swift’s best tracks, the emotion from the song stems from Avery’s own experience getting out of a relationship gone bad and reminds listeners that if you feel the need to remind yourself to be happy, then the relationship is toxic. The song has an 80’s Debbie Gibson retro sound with its horns and swinging beat. StoneBridge artfully keeps many of the magical elements from the radio edit yet makes the song his own with a high-energy beat. “Pieces” is different from any other tracks playing on dance floors today and that is what makes it so special.
“Missing Half” PROJECT MOSES The out singer explores the tumultuous relationship he had with his now deceased father in this, his first single from his new visual album, Better Man. The ominous ballad is a love letter to his dad, meant to convey the sometimes-conflicting feelings many of us have for the people who raised us. Project Moses remembers his father as a strict disciplinarian who he admired and mimicked to earn his love. But as Project Moses matured and he could no longer ignore his truth, he says their values began to clash. The music video echoes the melancholy tone of the single. Shot mostly in black and white, it depicts Project Moses wandering in New York City. Everywhere he goes, he is haunted by shadows of his father. It’s a beautiful piece of work with a hopeful message that reminds us that our missing halves can be found within us.
