HOLIDAY MOVIES, MAKE THE YULETIDE GAY ETHAN THORPE

Who’s ready to make the yuletide gay this year? It’s a banner year for LGBTQ representation in holiday movies, with both Hulu and Hallmark releasing new flicks with LGBTQ characters in the lead. And at least seven more have come out in 2020 with some sort of queer representation. “Compared to previous years, and the number of LGBTQ-inclusive films that are out, it’s like night and day,” GLAAD’s CEO and president, Sarah Kate Ellis told CNN. “We’ve really gone from zero to 100.” It’s not just Christmas movies that are seeing better representation either; this year saw the highest percentage of LGBTQ characters onscreen since GLAAD first started tracking those numbers 20 years ago. But don’t wave your Pride flags for the entertainment industry just yet, because we still have a long way to go (read our LGBTQ rights timeline). Of an estimated 879 regular characters on broadcast scripted prime-time programming, only about 10% (or 90 characters total) are explicitly LGBTQ, GLAAD reports. Seeing LGBTQ characters onscreen makes members of the community feel seen. Seeing two people who look like you in the media (especially for young or still-closeted LGBTQ people) can validate those who may not have anywhere else to turn. Here are a few favorite holiday films with some new options and old favorites. SINGLE ALL THE WAY Directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer and starring a stacked cast that includes Michael Urie, Philemon Chambers, Luke

MacFarlane, Barry Bostwick, Jennifer Robertson, and comedy screen legends Jennifer Coolidge and Kathy Najimy, Single All the Way tells the story of a gay man named Peter who is “desperate to avoid his family’s judgment about his perpetual single status,” according to the film’s official (and relatable AF) description. “Desperate to avoid his family’s judgment about his perpetual single status, Peter (Michael Urie) convinces his best friend Nick (Philemon Chambers) to join him for the holidays and pretend that they’re now in a relationship,” the film’s official description reads. “But when Peter’s mother (Kathy Najimy) sets him up on a blind date with her handsome trainer James (Luke Macfarlane)— the plan goes awry.” Single All the Way premieres on December 2, 2021 (Netflix) CHRISTMAS HOUSE 2 A sequel to The Christmas House, Hallmark’s first original Christmas movie featuring a same-sex couple, will be coming out this holiday season! The Christmas House 2: Deck Those Halls, brings back the original cast, including Jonathan Bennett and Brad Harder, who played the adorable couple in the first film. Other cast members returning include Robert Buckley, Ana Ayora, Treat Williams, and Sharon Lawrence. In case you’ve forgotten, the original Christmas House saw the two brothers returning home for the holidays at the request of their mother as they prepare to sell the family home. While Buckley’s character, Mike, finds himself reconnecting with

his high school sweetheart, Brandon (Bennett) comes home with his husband Jake, as the couple are awaiting a call about the adoption of their first child. Christmas House 2 Premiere date TBA (Hallmark Channel) UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE Marketing whiz Alma Beltran (Elise Bauman) and Christmas tree whisperer Charlie Freemont (Tattiawna Jones) cross paths when Charlie finds the perfect tree for the Maine Governor’s Holiday Celebration – right in Alma’s back yard. While they initially spar, romantic sparks soon begin to fly between the two women as the enchanting tree and some Christmas fairy dust from the town’s patisserie extraordinaire (Ricki Lake) bring out the best in them and spark each other to take leaps of faith and fight for love and Christmas magic. Under the Christmas Tree. premieres on Dec 19 (Lifetime) THE CHRISTMAS SET-UP Centered on two gay men. It was the first LGBTQ Christmas film for Lifetime last year. It followed Hugo, a New York corporate lawyer, who gets set up by his mom, Kate.

Hugo and Patrick’s attraction to each other is undeniable and it looks as though Kate’s well-intentioned Santa-style matchmaking is a success. But as Hugo receives word of a big promotion requiring a move to London, he must decide what is most important to him. (Lifetime) HAPPIEST SEASON This Hulu holiday film made a big splash when it came out this year. Harper (Mackenzie Davis) brings her girlfriend Abby (Kristen Stewart) home to meet her family, but on the way there, she reveals a catch: Harper’s not out to her family yet. Abby agrees to pretend to be her straight roommate and, well, chaos ensues. We laughed, we cried, we debated in the group chat all the way through. (Hulu) DASHING IN DECEMBER Get your cowboy boots ready: Christmas cynic Wyatt Burwall returns home for the holidays to convince his mom to sell the family’s Colorado ranch. But Wyatt falls for hunky ranch hand Heath Ramos, who dreams of saving the property (not to mention its Winter Wonderland attraction). Watch to find out if he melts Wyatt’s Grinchy heart.

TANGERINE After she learns her pimp was unfaithful, trans sex worker SinDee enlists the help of her friend Alexandra to get back at him. As they tear through Los Angeles on Christmas, things get rowdy. This one’s decidedly not for kids, so watch after yours go to bed if you’ve got little ones around.

MAKE THE YULETIDE GAY With lots of winks and nods to its own cheesiness, this campy holiday romp follows themes lots of us will recognize. Nathan has nowhere to go for the holidays, so he surprises his boyfriend Olaf. Turns out, Olaf has his own bombshell: He hasn’t told his family he’s gay. This one’s as sweet as a Christmas cookie.

LET IT SNOW A snowstorm in a small town brings a group of young people together, and the love stories are as plentiful as the flurries. One of those centers on Dorrie and Kerry, a lesbian couple. It’s as light and fluffy as new-fallen snow, and the perfect watch for a lazy December afternoon.

RED LODGE This 2013 movie is renamed The Unattainably Perfect Gay Christmas on Amazon Prime, but it’s a great holiday watch by any name. Jordan proposes to his boyfriend Dave in the days before Christmas, but he waffles about his decision. As you can imagine, that makes for one awkward family holiday.

Then, she meets an angel who shows her what her life would have been like if she’d gotten together with her childhood best friend Gabrielle instead. rom-com series tells the story of the budding romance between two New Yorkers named Dash (Euphoria’s Austin Abrams) and Lily (The Birch’s Midori Frances), who communicate their innermost thoughts, hopes, and feelings with each other using a red notebook. From the looks of the official trailer the series also features queer characters, most notably Lily’s brother Langston (Troy Iwata)!

MUST SEE

THE BROWNS ARE BACK! BY TOM TIETJEN

The Browns, the hilarious television series that began as twominute comedic sketches on Instagram, returns for a second season November 5 on OUT TV and Amazon Prime, with new episodes airing Fridays. Starring drag duo Tammie Brown and Kelly Mantle — Brown as a semi-retired singer and homemaker and Mantle as her delightfully dipsomaniac manager and best friend — The Browns re-imagines the family sitcom in a way that is strange, vulgar, and deliciously outrageous. “I grew up on shows like Step by Step, Full House, and Family Matters,” says the series’ creator John Mark (who also plays the role of Brown’s son). “I wanted to make a show that implemented traditional 90’s family sitcom tropes into a queer space.” The cast is thrilled to return for another season. “Tammie and I are two comedic corpses living out our Hollywood fantasies,” says Kelly Mantle, going on to explain how the two became fast friends and collaborators: “When I first met Tammie, she was singing to herself in the mirror while guzzling champagne and playing with dancing troll dolls. I thought she was the ghost of Edith Piaf! I immediately knew this was the kind-of batshit crazy I needed in my life.” Tammie Brown is the drag persona created by Keith Glen Schubert, best known for her stand-out appearances on RuPaul’s Drag Race and RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars. She has released four music albums including the popular hit singles, “Port-A-Potty Prostitute” and “Love Pinata,” and regularly performs all over the world. Kelly Mantle made Oscar’s history by being the first openly non-binary person ever to be approved and considered by The Academy for both Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress for their role in the feature film, Confessions of A Womanizer. Mantle is a

22 THESTANDARDPS.COM

graduate of Second City in Chicago and has appeared on television in RuPaul’s Drag Race, Lucifer, Modern Family and Mike & Molly, among others. Their uncle is the late great Mickey Mantle. On the popularity of Sheila, the zany character they play on The Browns, Kelly Mantle says, “People connect with Sheila because she has no filter, no censor and no shame. She says what we’re all thinking. She’s bold and blunt, but it goes down smooth like Southern Comfort.” The first iteration of The Browns was a few improvised sketches John Mark and Tammie Brown made in 2018 at Mark’s home. “It was a casual two days of playing around and shooting on a microbudget,” he remembers. “It wasn’t until people started responding to the skits online that we realized there was potential to scale the show into something bigger.” In early 2020, Producer Entertainment Group signed on as executive producers and helped John Mark successfully pitch the series to OutTV. Producer Entertainment Group (PEG) is a fullservice artist management firm, record label and production company proudly representing many of the world’s top drag queens and LGBTQ+ talent. The first season consisted of three episodes with content built from the Instagram sketches. The new season of The Browns is five thirty-minute scripted episodes. Switching to a scripted format allowed the creative team to weave a more complex story line. “In season two, Tammie returns home after a journey of self-discovery to find her peculiar family in even odder form,” Mark continues. “Amidst the chaos of her son’s viral fame, her best friend Sheila’s

drunken hijinks, and her father’s involvement in a pyramid scheme, Tammie decides to take a shot at love! She is challenged to be more vulnerable with everyone around her, including her offbeat family and potential suitors.” He credits the success of The Browns to the incredible cast (in addition to Brown, Mantle, and Mark, Paige Klone plays Ethel, Roy Allen is Daddy and Jackson Davis is Jackson) and their chemistry, as well as the many queer talents who have lent their names and time to the project. Season one featured RuPaul’s Drag Race alums Kasha Davis, Laganja Estranja, Ongina, Raja, Tynomi Banks, and drag icon, Coco Peru. In the new season, The Browns welcomes drag legends Katya, Honey Davenport, Mariah Balenciaga, and Sherry Vine, as well as non-drag notables Cazwell and Jen Kober. Caroline Williams guest directs episodes two and four. “Creating a unique space where famous queer club performers have to deal with wholesome family sitcom themes feels subversive and exciting to me as a filmmaker,” John Mark reflects. He promises that while the new season will be a scaled-up version of The Browns, it will remain true to the sidesplitting family fun that fans have fallen in love with.

INDESIGN

GOING WITH THE FLOW… BY DANN FOLEY

One of the biggest secrets of great design isn’t planning, planning and more planning. I tell all of my clients they need to “Go with the flow.” It is not that any decision should be made with disregard but, it is just sometimes you have to take a leap of faith. Everything happens for a reason, even in design. If there is one thing I know for certain, it’s that there will always be obstacles; delays, cancellations and damages to everything we order for every room, in every house. A creative process is fluid. I warn clients against being set in what they think they want. A narrow vision does not leave room for inspiration or discovery. My most successful projects are where I, as the designer, am entrusted with the space to explore and experiment within my client’s parameters. That does not mean that the client is not presented with a clear vision. But it takes into consideration the great big world of products and styles. I have been quoted many times offering this advice, “A design plan is not carved in stone. The creative process is one where we feel our way through the myriad of opportunities presented to us, from beginning to end.” Take it easy on yourself. The idea that you have to have that

24 THESTANDARDPS.COM

exact chair, or sofa or ashtray is the attitude that zaps all joy out of creating your perfect environment. Each item is meant to bring you, the homeowner some form of joy. Each piece in each room is a moment. The total of those pieces creates a mosaic or puzzle. Each piece is a part of the total and the finished picture is a story of who you are. Shouldn’t something as important, even monumental as that be given the opportunity to evolve and form organically? Well, this may all sound a bit new-age to you but, truth be told, this is the way that successful designs and successful designer/client relationships come about. It is my job to ensure that you have the completed home of your wishes. What I bring to the table is the added piece of giving you exactly what you wanted but, in a way you never dreamed possible. It is my job to hear what you have to say and then remove the blinders of a narrow vision to show you just how big your world and your style can be! So, how can I help you to see your vision of the perfect home become reality? Let me offer some sage advice from more than 30 years of experience as an interior designer…

• Don’t ever get to the point where you feel like you are banging your head against a wall in aggravation for what you are NOT getting. Be open, see what is in front of you. Allow yourself to think outside the box. • Remember that everything happens for a reason. In my experience this is one of the certainties in design and life. Your second option is most often greater than your first choice. • Your home does not have to be finished overnight. In this age of Covid, where supply chains and delivery of items are sketchy at best, we are all learning to be patient. I can assure you it will be worth the wait. • A finished room is never really finished. It is important that your space(s) change and evolve with you. Your life is not stagnant; don’t allow your style to become so either. • Change is good. It is the hardest thing to accept, but inside you know it to be true. Even with age comes wisdom. With time, a design takes on a personality and patina that tells those lucky enough to inhabit your life just who you are. Change can also be applied to the idea that creativity is fluid. Give yourself permission to change your mind about what you want and what you love. Each month I offer you advice, tips, tricks and inspiration to view your home in a different light. My hope is that I have helped you

to clarify who you are and what you want in the context of how you live. Living well is not a mystery. I am aware than many out there want you to think that there are hard and fast rules and that one thing or one style is better than another. There are those who think that when they are invited into your home that it means they have the right to judge your choices and offer their own advice. Design and lifestyle are totally personal choices. They are meant to be seen from your perspective and yours alone. Don’t allow anyone to dictate to you. Make choices based on your life. They do not have to be what others choose. They only have to be right for you. Design should be inspirational, invigorating and satisfying. Your home is your oasis, your stage, your pride and joy. It should also be the place you are most comfortable. Be purposeful in your choices. Let me leave you with a wonderful quote by Jane Austen: “There is nothing like staying HOME for real comfort.” You go Jane! Now you get going too. Find YOUR home within. As always, Live Well! TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH: GET TESTED FOR BREAST CANCER. Lesbian and bisexual women may be at increased risk for breast cancer – and other cancers – compared to heterosexual women.* Knowing about breast cancer and what you can do to help prevent or find it early (when the cancer is small and might be easier to treat) may help save your life or the life of someone you love. The American Cancer Society recommends the following guidelines for breast cancer early detection for women at average risk: Women ages 40 to 44 have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with a mammogram if they wish to do so. Women ages 45 to 54 should get a mammogram every year. Women 55 and older can switch to a mammogram every 2 years, or can continue to get a yearly mammogram. Screening is recommended to continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live at least 10 more years. To learn more about how you can help reduce your risk of breast cancer or find it early, visit cancer.org/breastcancer or call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.

All women should talk to their health care team; they are familiar with the known benefits, limitations, and potential harms linked to breast cancer screening. Women should also be familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel, and they should report any changes to a health care provider right away. Some women at high risk for breast cancer – because of their family history, a genetic tendency, or certain other factors – should be screened with an MRI along with a mammogram every year, typically starting at age 30. Talk with a health care provider about your breast cancer risk and the best screening plan for you.

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER You always wanted to make your mark. There’d be no footstep-following in your life. You’d carve your own path, select your own adventures, seize the opportunities that appealed to you, and blaze trails for the sake of others’ journeys. You’d take the best of those you knew and loved, and you’d go your own way. As in the new memoir, “A Tale of Two Omars” by Omar Sharif, Jr., you’ll also make your own mistakes. Born into a family that had ties on several continents, Omar Sharif, Jr. never had to worry about money or a place to live. On one side of the family – his maternal side – the Holocaust left a mark on his mother’s parents, who’d barely escaped the concentration camps. On the other side, Sharif’s paternal grandparents were both famous and beloved actors with roots in Egypt. Sharif was close with his entire family, but particularly with his grandfather, Omar Sharif. Sharif recalls many a dinner party, listening, while his grandfather held court at dinner, laughing and telling stories. Everyone, everything seemed so elegant and refined and those meals showed Sharif a life that he could have if he wanted it. As time passed, the lessons he received were paid back: he was one of the few allowed to help his grandfather as Alzheimer’s took hold at the end of the great actor’s life. But this is not a story of a famous actor or a grandfather. It’s the story of a man who’s not just half-Jewish and Egyptian. He’s also gay, a part of himself that Sharif kept hidden until well into adulthood, although he says that other children must’ve sensed it when he was young. It was a part of himself that he feared revealing to his father. It helped him land a dream job that ultimately became a nightmare. The title of this book – “A Tale of Two Omars – is a bit of a misnomer. Judging by what author Omar Sharif Jr. writes here, there are several Omars: the activist; a globe-hopper; a son and grandson; a writer; and a grandfather whose life was impactful but who has a surprisingly small footprint in this book. Which is not to say that readers will like them all. Indeed, parts of this book may seem as though you’ve read them before: bullied as a child, fear of coming out, the college revelation, the mismatched first love. Those ubiquitous bits are here, but they pale in comparison to Sharif’s ultra-urbane life and the hair-raising, terrifying account of getting and getting out of what seemed like the ultimate job with a wealthy sheikh, a job that slowly grew dangerous. That storywithin-a-story is so edgy, so mouth-drying, that you’ll throw away the thriller you bought last week.

Then there’s the part about his life-threatening activism, a tale that starts and ends this book... And so, beware at the unevenness of this memoir, but understand that the tedium doesn’t linger. Skip past the ho-humness of “A Tale of Two Omars” and the rest is remarkable. “A Tale of Two Omars” by Omar Sharif Jr. c.2021, Counterpoint Press $26.00 / higher in Canada 224 pages

>> THE DINAH 2021: A MOMENT THAT NO ONE WILL FORGET BY MICHEL KHORDOC

It’s a wrap! The Dinah finally celebrated its 30th Anniversary in a way that can only be described as spectacular. This was not just another year in the books … the Dinah 2021 was a “WOW” moment. Pulling all the stops, the event was pure magic. Filled with exceptional moments and unforgettable surprises, the Dinah 2021 was not only much needed, but profoundly transforming and re-energizing. A Dinah unlike any others, 2021 was insanely surreal and epic. The empowering effect of the event has never been as palpable in the entertainment line-up as it was this year. Led by a strong and diverse presence of kick-ass female artists, The Dinah 2021 performances defied expectations on so many different levels. The Dinah might very well represent different things for everyone, but the one common thread is its unique ability to bind us all together as one big family and organically impart a sense of solidarity, community, kindness, and love. And this year that sentiment heartwarmingly extended to the talent who remarkably came together to support each other like never before establishing an unbreakable bond. Many iconic moments marked this year’s Dinah. MK xyz showed up earlier on Friday to catch Kat Cunning’s Pool

28 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Party performance; Cunning later that evening attended the Black & White Ball to see MK xyz on stage and hang out with her post show; the next day MK xyz joined her friend Yung Baby Tate on stage at the Saturday Hollywood Party for a quick jam; on Sunday, Yung Baby Tate rushed side stage to congratulate SWV on their outstanding performance; legendary R&B vocal trio, SWV stepped on stage sporting Dinah Tees to deliver an electrifying performance amidst triple-digit heat. From Rozzi, St. Panther, SWH, Smeared Lipstick, Boi Band, Cece Peniston to Tommy Genesis and Doechii, it was a weekend of highenergy and unforgettable performances. That is because there is something liberating about the Dinah that is extremely infectious and contagious and rises from the crowd to the performers onstage who just can get enough. Of course, it wouldn’t be The Dinah without the unexpected treats. If the party is the ice cream, the surprise is the cherry on top. British model, actress and singer, Cara Delevingne joined the Pool Party festivities at the Hilton Hotel on Saturday. The supermodel mingled with the crowd, snapped photos and selfies with attendees before sneaking backstage to chat with her buddy Kat Cunning. Another unexpected celebrity sighting came on Sunday at the Sunday Funday Pool Party, when Real Housewives of OC, Braunwyn Wyndham-Burke, stopped by for some fun in the sun. After attending her first Dinah ever, the TV Personality, activist & mother (of 7), known for her “modern family” and being the first openly gay housewife on Bravo’s hit TV show, The Real Housewives of Orange County, shared on Instagram:

PSP FOCUS “My favorite part about [The Dinah] was that it didn’t matter who you were – for a few days you got to break out of your box and be exactly who you ARE. The amount of love, acceptance, and support was immense and beautiful” It was certainly quite an impactful event after a year and a half of lockdowns and pandemic restrictions. Every single attendee, talent and staff member organically came together in the most beautiful expression of team spirit. Standing strong and tall as one of the longest running and largest Music Festival and Community gathering event catering to LGBTQ+ womxn, non-binary & trans attendees, and straight allies, The Dinah exuded a fond 90s nostalgia – a longing for a simpler time. 90s staples, Cece Peniston and SWV, certainly propelled that era into the present resurrecting the sense of unity that prevailed back then. The “everybody gets along” feeling was perhaps best captured and encapsulated by Grammy-award winner Macy Gray. The legendary singer closed her stunning performance by inviting Mariah Hanson, founder and producer of The Dinah, on stage to thank and congratulate her for the milestone Anniversary.

“This is her 30th” Macy Gray announced to the crowd. “Has anybody out there done anything for 30 years? 30 years baby, congratulations. We’re going to sing this song to her. You know what she said? She said to me backstage ‘I just wanted to create a beautiful place where everybody could come and be comfortable and happy’. And so, we want to say to her THANK YOU.” Gray joined by the audience immediately broke into a spontaneous and heartfelt rendition of the Golden Girls theme song “Thank you For Being a Friend”. That’s exactly it … what defines The Dinah 2021 is gratitude. Appreciation for an event that never fails to send us home feeling profound nostalgia for a weekend that transformed our lives forever, re-energized our spirit and unified us. Full COVID-19 vaccination or negative COVID-19 test results was required to attend the Dinah 2021. City and State mandates were accordingly enforced. The Dinah 2022 will take place September 28 through October 4, 2022. For more information go to: www.thedinah.com

PSP FOCUS and the Vandellas, and the iconic Village People, among others. AAP also brought back the music of ABBA and assembled the First Ladies of Disco back in 2014. That first show, produced by James Washington, was based on James Arena’s book “First Ladies of Disco” which highlighted 32 female vocalists who pioneered the original disco music sound. At Evening Under the Stars that year, history was made as AAP brought the book to life with several of the featured artists on their stage, and the ladies of Chic sang on stage together for the first time in nearly 25 years. The First Ladies of Disco is comprised of Linda Clifford, Martha Wash, and Norma Jean Wright (formerly of Chic) plus two special surprise guest artists selected especially for this event. It will be an extraordinary musical journey of the most iconic soul, pop, R&B, and dance songs to have ever topped the charts, led by the hitmakers of their time. Anton continued, “These artists’ collective careers span several decades, and their music includes an incredible variety of on-yourfeet, chart-topping smash hits. Together, they have sold millions, and audiences around the world are on cloud nine when they finally get to see and hear these amazing performers that made our youth so much fun!” NORMA JEAN WRIGHT Norma was a key member of the seminal group Chic, and she went on to release her self-titled album Norma Jean which catapulted the single “Saturday” to the top of the R&B charts. She has worked with some of the best in the business, lending her voice to recordings for Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Madonna, Luther Vandross, Sister Sledge, and Debbie Gibson, among many others. LINDA CLIFFORD Linda’s landmark recordings have spent a total of 60 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Dance Charts earning 5 Grammy Nominations. Linda has appeared on American Bandstand, Solid Gold, Soul Train, The Midnight Special, Don Kirchner’s Rock Concert, and The Merv Griffin Show. She is an exciting live performer who sold out live concerts around the world including New York’s Lincoln Center. Linda is also an acclaimed songwriter, with her compositions being sought out by Cher and Gladys Knight. She has the distinction of being featured on the Oscar winning #1 motion picture soundtrack album Fame. MARTHA WASH Martha is a two-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, actress, producer, and activist. As a singer she is most widely recognized for her classic dance hits “It’s Raining Men” and “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” which sold more than ten million copies worldwide. As part of Black Box, their Dreamland album featured four #1 Billboard Dance singles and three Top 40

hits including “Strike It Up.” Evening Under the Stars promises to transport attendees back in time to the heyday of the Disco era. Guests are certain to enjoy getting into the spirit of this event with festive attire specific to the era. Evening Under the Stars is the largest annual fundraiser for AAP – Food Samaritans, a non- profit organization that provides nutritional support for low-income people living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses. The gala will begin with an extended sunset cocktail hour on the grounds of the O’Donnell Golf Club against a backdrop of the majestic San Jacinto Mountains, widely regarded as one of the most festive cocktail receptions of the season. A short awards program will recognize a few inspirational honorees (to be announced soon), followed by a delicious dinner, dancing, and the performance by First Ladies of Disco. DAPUPDATE REVIVALS BACK ALLEY EVENT 2021 SHINES A LIGHT ON LEATHER COMMUNITY BY JACK BUNTING This community is ready to start coming out again, and the numbers prove it. The Revivals Back Alley After Dark event brought in $13,000.00 for patient services at DAP Health, more than double from last year’s, and $3,000 more than the team’s goal. In its first collaboration, cosponsoring was Palm Springs Leather Order of the Desert (PSLOD), a significant fundraiser for HIV and health equity in the Coachella Valley. PSLOD will also host Palm Springs Leather Pride Weekend, from October 28-31. Event organizers and partners say After Dark’s healthy turnout is a sign that people are feeling safer and eager to re-connect with others. “These sales numbers are unheard of,” says Revivals volunteer Mark Musin. Eager for the hunt, 278 shoppers didn’t mind queuing up at the Palm Springs Revivals for almost three hours before doors opened at 6 p.m. More than 700 shoppers had made purchases by closing time. Very little was left after two hours and more than 1,000 clothing items, including leather jackets, chaps, vests, and hats were scooped up. It was easy for shoppers to fill containers with leather and other treasures after finding them neatly displayed on racks by friendly volunteers who offered sizing and selection advice. This included an impressive amount of revamped and shiny leather shoes and boots. Check-out lines never stopped moving, and volunteers engaged customers to collect hangers and help guide them as they finished. VOLUNTEERS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE After Dark brought together 30 volunteers from all four Revivals stores, ten more compared to last year. “We all like working together so much,” says Mark. “It was a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to see each other and even for some to meet for the first time.” When Mark saw volunteers from other Revivals locations working so naturally with the Palm Springs team to straighten and restock items, plus help customers, he knew it was all worth the effort. “It’s about the community they love to serve, and it’s the camaraderie they share,” he says. “It had them all joining in, and they did a great job!” SAVING BEST INVENTORY FOR BACK ALLEY EVENT Leather themed clothing and gear is always costly, and many find

36 THESTANDARDPS.COM

exploring the subculture intimidating. But at Revivals, shoppers were able to pick up leather chaps for $20 used, instead of $400 new. Leather jackets were plentiful and started at $10 instead of $500 new. Harnesses, suspenders, and belts sold out in the first ten minutes. Special toys for grownups, gay literature and nude magazines, movies, and framed art that need new homes wind up at Revivals year-round. Saving them for an appropriate and safe venue like After Dark means that these items can be re-used, and members of this community continue to enjoy great care from DAP Health. The idea for Back Alley After Dark was born over three years ago as Revivals Stores took a stand on recycling and decided that tossing donations that were considered too racy was not an option. And the more Revivals talked to the community it serves, the more it learned this gently used merchandise is in demand in a valley where economic disparities abound. “We live in a desert mirage of two valleys,” says Steven Henke, director of brand marketing at DAP Health and in charge of marketing and communications for Revivals. “There are lucky folks with great jobs, who can afford to buy new leather gear and brand new anything they want, and there are other folks who need to find things on a budget.” With Revivals After Dark, anyone who wants to be part of the leather community or even just buy the look can find truly affordable deals, he says. “That is so on-brand for DAP Health, because we are all about

inclusivity, collaboration, and bringing folks together in a positive way,” Steven says. Health remains the driving motivation for this event, with proceeds funding comprehensive medical care at DAP Health, including through Desert AIDS Walk, and a donation to PSLOD. “We are so grateful for this collaboration with Palm Springs Leather Order of the Desert,” says Steven. “We can’t wait to see what the future holds through partnering.” MORE FREEDOM THIS YEAR TO SOCIALIZE Thanks to vaccinations, masks, and a public eager to experience our Southern California fall, outdoor events like Desert AIDS Walk 2021 and Palm Springs Gay Pride 2021 will return to being “peopled” for the first time since the pandemic began. And for largely indoor events like Palm Springs Leather Pride, safety protocols ensure everyone in attendance can enjoy and explore without forfeiting safety. This is good news for a very in-person community beginning its social season. After more than 18 months of avoiding crowds, people want to see each other again. “It’s becoming so nice to approach people whom I haven’t seen since the pandemic started, simply to say, ‘I’m happy you’re here still here’,” says Dan Smith, co-chair of Leather Pride Weekend. CHARITABLE PSLOD HELPS MEMBERS HONOR TRUE SELVES Palm Springs Leather Order of the Desert has raised and donated over $250,000.000 for HIV services and health equity in the Coachella Valley in its almost 30-year history. The organization is honoring more diversity within the LGBTQ population here, and Dan Smith, co-chair of Leather Pride Weekend, is ready. “We’re really looking forward to re-inventing the club, including making it a place for everyone,” Dan says. More inclusion for PSLOD means welcoming more people of color, more women, and more transgender folks as new members. It also means challenging longstanding assumptions about what it means to be “leather”. According to Dan, if it isn’t about pursuing your own authenticity, it’s time to challenge your perception. “There’s this idea that a leather person has to be male, macho, hairy, have a beard, and be gruff—the whole hyper masculine image,” he says. The truth is that there is room for everyone, no matter what they look like, he says. “I just want people to be who they are, and we all struggle with that.” PSLOD is experiencing a surge itself with 12 new members joining in the last two months and counting. “I don’t want anyone prevented from exploring the leather community,” Dan says. One of his trusted methods for helping first

timers feel OK exploring new things is simple; be friendly. “I would rather step up our hospitality, rather than have someone come to an event and experience no one talking to them,” Dan says. “People are starving for some type of connection.” Find out more about Palm Springs Leather Order of the Desert (PSLOD) and Palm Springs Leather Pride Weekend [October 28-31, 2021] at www.pslod.org. ABOUT REVIVALS The very first Revivals store was opened in 1995, in a back corner of the Desert AIDS Project office on Vella Road. Since those earliest days, the funds raised through selling donated goods at Revivals has gone back to support comprehensive care at DAP Health, while also providing a great volunteer opportunity for those who wanted to support the organization with their time and retail talents. Today, all of the stores are largely volunteer-run, enabling Revivals to make a significant financial contribution to the annual budget of DAP Health. ABOUT DAP HEALTH DAP Health (DAP) is an advocacy-based health center in Palm Springs, CA serving over 10,000 patients, offering medical and mental healthcare, STI testing and treatment, dentistry, pharmacy, and lab. A variety of wraparound services enable patients to experience optimal health, including social services, support groups, alternative therapies, and other wellness services. Excellent HIV care is provided by the largest team of specialized clinicians in the area.    DAP opened one of California’s first COVID clinics and hotlines to offer screening, testing, and treatment. DAP is also working to address social determinants of health that are causing negative health outcomes during this pandemic, like food and housing insecurity, joblessness, isolation, and access to ongoing healthcare. DAP’s sexual health clinic offers STI testing and treatment, PreExposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), and HIV and HCV testing. BILLY PORTER MAKES DEBUT UNDER JOINT PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN ISLAND UK & REPUBLIC RECORDS BY MARTHA TANG GRAMMY®, EMMY®, and Tony® Award-winning actor, singer, director, composer, playwright, and author Billy Porter unveils a brandnew single entitled “Children”. The single marks Billy’s debut under his newly minted joint partnership with Island UK and Republic Records. “Children” is a high-energy dancefloor anthem co-written with GRAMMY® Award-nominated songwriter MNEK [H.E.R., Dua Lipa] and Little Mix’s Jade Thirwell. Speaking about the inspiration behind the track Billy says, “It’s a song that is inspired by my life and everything I’ve gone through to get here.” The song begins wistfully, with Porter empathizing: See I know times are hard, Yeah I mean it from the heart You’re not losing the fight; love will make it alright Cos i’ve been there, done that, worn that dress, so you know mama knows it best A beat drop follows, kicking into a propulsive disco groove as Porter triumphantly promises: a change starts today, better wipe those tears away. “Music is my first love,” says Porter. “I grew up singing in the church. When I first put out commercial music in 1997, the industry was not ready for all this Black Boy Joy! But luckily the world has caught up. I could not be more thrilled to entrust this next chapter of my music career to the Island/Republic team. Make way children! Daddy’s back.” Porter delivers the song’s show-stopping hook, “Gotta let these children know what time it is,” punctuated by his jaw-dropping range. “For the first time, my music is what I want it to be, what I want it to say, which is hope, love,” said Porter. “We have to choose it every day so we can fight the evil that is so pervasive. We can only fight it with love, and I am so excited for my music for that.”

Porter began his music career in 1997 with the release of his self-titled (aka Untitled) debut album which spawned the Top 10 “Bubbling Under” single, “Show Me,” and the monster ballad, “Love Is On The Way,” which also appeared at the pivotal moment in the film, “First Wives Club.” He went on to release “At the Corner of Broadway + Soul” (2005), “Billy’s Back on Broadway” (2014), and “The Soul of Richard Rodgers” (2017) featuring Pentatonix, India.Arie, Leslie Odom Jr. and Cynthia Erivo, among others. Porter scored his first #1 with “Love Yourself” in 2019 on the US Dance Club Songs Chart. He followed that up with his 2020 reimagining of the legendary Buffalo Springfield anthem, “For What It’s Worth,” and a fierce collaboration with The Shapeshifters on “Finally Ready.” 2021 saw Porter covering Juliet Roberts club classic “Caught in The Middle ‘’ for Red Hot + Free, which supports underserved communities afflicted with HIV/ AIDS. He was also enlisted by multi-platinum international superstar Jessie J for “I Want Love.” And he delivered a fierce turn on Earth, Wind, and Fire’s iconic “Shining Star” as Fab G, the Fairy Godmuva, in the new remake of “Cinderella.” Porter is a veteran of the theater (Miss Saigon, Angels in America, Grease). He won a Tony® in the category of “Best Leading Actor in a Musical” for Kinky Boots in 2013, and a GRAMMY® for the latter’s Official Soundtrack in the category of “Best Musical Theater Album” in 2014. Porter took home the EMMY® Award for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series” in 2019 for his work as Pray Tell on Pose, making history in being the first openly gay man to do so. Time Magazine named him one of the “100 Most Influential People” of 2020. This October, Billy will release his highly anticipated memoir, “Unprotected.” His directorial film debut, “What If,” is set to drop in 2022. Billy kicks off his next chapter in music, his first love, with a new album coming soon.

ELTON JOHN; THE LOCKDOWN SESSIONS BY RYAN TURRIN Elton John’s The Lockdown Sessions was released last month on Interscope Records and available to stream now. An album of collaborations recorded remotely over the last 18 months The Lockdown Sessions features UK #1 single “Cold Heart (PNAU remix)” with Dua Lipa, and previous instant gratification tracks “Finish Line” with Stevie Wonder and “After All” with Charlie Puth. In March 2020 Elton was forced to pause his record-breaking Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour due to the unfolding COVID pandemic. As the world began to shut down, different projects presented themselves with artists Elton had enjoyed getting to know through his Apple Music show Rocket Hour. This was the beginning of one of Elton’s boldest and most interesting records to date that he has billed The Lockdown Sessions. This album saw Elton coming full circle and returning to his roots as a session musician. While it was no easy feat recording during a pandemic, a completely new way of working for Elton, he leaned into the challenge with some magnificent results. Kicking off with global hit single “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)” with Dua Lipa, the album takes the listener on a heady journey through many different genres, all held together with expert finesse and understanding by one of the greatest champions of music of our time. Much more than a mere collaboration album, The Lockdown Sessions is a dazzlingly diverse collection of 16 tracks with 10 brand new unreleased tracks that celebrates togetherness and sees Elton collaborating with an unparalleled range of artists only he could draw together. The enduring influence of his musical milestone with one of the most ambitious projects ever conceived. An unprecedented 20+ artists feature spanning an unbelievably vast range of genres, generations, cultures, continents and more, each contributing a unique style to the album that is sure to hold its place amongst one of pop and rock’s greatest songbooks. Just last week, Elton set a new record as the only solo artist in Official UK Chart history to score a Top 10 single in six different decades. An unparalleled career that has forever changed the cultural landscape, Elton John’s collaborations with Bernie Taupin and others continue to shape the cultural landscape, break records, top charts and win new fans across the generations. We’ve had the book, the film, the farewell tour, the fashion collections and the greatest hits. And now with The Lockdown Sessions out now on digital formats, fans can enter Elton’s new world which is no doubt another fitting addition to his oeuvre.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING EURO STYLE BY CHRIS ASTRALA

We’re inching closer and closer to the holiday season, which means it’s time to start shopping for presents for the ones you love most. And there’s no better place to do just that than at Europe’s famed Christmas markets. The Christmas season is one of the best times to go to Europe with the festive spirit in full swing and the cold weather just mild enough to walk around. And Christmas markets, found in towns large and small, are one of the best ways to soak it all in. Drink mulled wine and nibble on petite cookies as you meander around the stalls and chalets from Strasbourg to Berlin to Amsterdam and beyond. Stuff your suitcase with figurines made of prune in Germany and collect Tartan Christmas ornaments in Scotland. GERMANY Gendarmenmarkt Christmas market Marvel at the 1,000 fairy lights that illuminate this historic market in Germany’s capital city. Shop traditional blown glass and wood carvings as well as more unique gifts like origami. Head to the heated tents for some food and fill up on Austrian specialties and Bavarian treats. On New Year’s Eve, be dazzled by the fireworks from the celebratory tents, ringing in the new year with cheer. When: Nov. 26 to Dec. 31 Where: Berlin, Germany Munich Christmas market This market traces its roots in some form all the way back to

the 14th century and has been located on Marienplatz since 1972. Today you can spoil your loved ones with traditional gifts like hand painted glass baubles, sheepskin jackets and paper pictures brought back from this historic market made up from more than 160 booths. While there, enjoy stollen, fruit cake and baked apples, then wash it down with berry mulled wine or herb liqueur. When: Nov. 27 to Dec. 24 Where: Munich, Germany

Dresdner Striezelmarkt This is the oldest market in Germany and offers visitors about 250 different stalls to shop from. Celebrate the holiday season with the festival’s gingerbread party or the Christmas tree decorating competition (the winning tree receives a check for 500 euros, which is then donated to a social group like a hospital). While there, feast on glazed apples and, of course, mulled wine. When: Nov. 27 to Dec. 24 Where: Dresden, Germany FRANCE Strasbourg Christmas Market Miles of fairy lights illuminates this city along the Rhine River as its Christmas market dates back to 1570 — Strasbourg used to be part of the German Rhineland. Shop wooden toys and blown glass candles from the more than 300 market stalls where you can find the perfect souvenir. After, dig into some Alsatian bredele (traditional small cookies), or foie gras in true French fashion. When: Nov. 22 to Dec. 30 Where: Strasbourg, France Christmas market at La Défense This market is the biggest in the Paris area, with more than 300 chalets showcasing crafts and more than 4,000 square feet of merry decorations, all underneath the Grande Arche de la Defense. After a long day of shopping go ahead and indulge in some cheese — you are in France, after all. When: November - December Where: Paris, France

UNITED KINGDOM Bath Christmas Market Nearly every single item at this artisan market is handmade by the owner of the stall, in Britain or abroad with Fairtrade certification, according to the market, and more than 80 percent of the stall owners come from the area. Pick up some felt animals and tableware, along with small-batch gin and local fudge. While there, snack on hog roast or caramelized nuts to keep your energy up for shopping. When: Nov. 28th to Dec. 15 Where: Bath, England Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park Sip hot chocolate topped with marshmallows or mulled wine in London’s Hyde Park as you shop for candle votives, ornaments, crafts and gourmet food. After shopping, go ice skating or choose from nine different roller coasters before going to meet Santa in his workshop. When: Nov. 21 to Jan. 5 Where: London, England Edinburgh’s Christmas Load up on sweets with cinnamon and sugar chimney cakes and cotton candy at this joyous celebration in the Scottish capital as you shop for hand carved wooden candle holders and Tartan Christmas ornaments. Later, spend a few hours in Santa Land where you can ride the Candy Cane Bunjees and the Reindeer Ride. When: Nov. 16 to Jan. 4 Where: Edinburgh, Scotland

URGE MIAMI FESTIVAL DEBUTS THANKSGIVING WEEKEND BY MIKE BAHR

URGE Miami Festival will debut this Thanksgiving weekend with thousands of gay men from across the USA venturing to the sun-drenched shores of South Beach. Produced by Luis Morera, Billy Kemp and Hilton Wolman, the event will be a massive three-night, four-day spectacular featuring a list of the world’s most famous circuit DJs and performers including Isaac Escalante, Renato Cecin, Aron, Alex Lo, Joe Gauthreaux, Phil Romano, Morabito, Suri, and more to be announced. “Last year’s party was cancelled because of the pandemic so we are thrilled to bring the world’s best gay Thanksgiving event back to Miami,” says Hilton Wolman. Due to COVID restrictions in Europe that continue to prevent some talent and guests from attending USA events, the producers decided to not to bring back the European-based Circuit Festival Miami event that typically took place in South Beach during Thanksgiving Weekend. Instead, they are presenting Urge Miami Festival, with a focus on domestic travelers. “We are billing this year’s event as the ultimate holiday reunion for the American gay party community, emphasizing strength and unity,” continues Wolman. Many of the same exceptional venues will be utilized, including the signature event of the weekend: the long-established Sunday Beach Party. The URGE Miami Festival Beach Party will take place on an expanded area, east of the dunes on 12th Street, from their 2019 event, but the current plan calls for an even wider footprint that will give more space on the dancefloor. It will also feature a stage that rises 25 feet into the air and a raised VIP area with great views of the stage, where guests can enjoy a full open bar. URGE Miami Festival’s opening night party will be a collaboration with Mexico’s Arena Festival and We Party. “Expect the unexpected,” promises Luis Morera. Tickets for URGE Miami Festival are available now on their website. GA and VIP tickets purchased in the Tier 1 phase are being offered at a 50% savings. The popular 24-hour pass that includes the Sunday Beach Party, Sunday night event and Monday morning Afterhours event is also available.

This year’s host hotel is the Kimpton Anglers, conveniently located on Washington Ave, just off 5th. They are currently offering specially negotiated rates starting at just $219/night that can be booked directly from the URGE Miami Festival website. The hotel is also offering to halve the normal resort fee for URGE Miami Festival guests. In addition to uniting festivals lovers with their favorite circuit DJs and performers, URGE Miami Festival is committed to supporting the local Miami economy. Producers are working to drive tourists into businesses by offering discounts on all sorts of merchandise from stores, restaurants, and gyms. “It’s a beautiful exchange,” Morera, a longtime South Florida resident, says. “We want to make sure that URGE Miami Festival is contributing directly to our beautiful city and that we are leaving a good and lasting impression.” Additionally, URGE Miami Festival is scheduling a beach cleanup so that they leave the sands as clean as they were before the weekend parties. A portion of the proceeds from URGE Miami Festival will benefit Miami Beach Pride, a not-for-profit organization that works to unite members of the LGBTQ community by celebrating the unique spirit and culture of its people. URGE Miami Festival tickets are available at urgemiamifestival.com.
