Commentary Evening Under the Stars 20 Years of Support for AIDS Assistance Program When AIDS Assistance Program was founded in 1991, those who were living with the disease couldn’t work, and they certainly couldn’t survive on disability payments. To make matters worse, they were hungry. A group of concerned citizens, including the late Gloria Greene, Jeannette Rockefeller, and Joanna Jakway had a vision to help those who had no place else to go. They wanted to help provide nutritional support to improve the quality of the lives of those surviving HIV/AIDS. Since then, the AAP client roster has grown from 20 to approximately 500 people, and more than 8.5 million dollars has been distributed to nearly 2,000 low-income clients in the Greater Palm Springs area. Only two full-time employees manage the organization from a small, no-frills office in Palm Springs. A Board of Directors, all volunteers; works with the primary purpose of raising funds to support the organization and its food voucher program. Our budgeted food voucher expense is $600,000 annually, and 100% of operational expenses are generated through a growing private donor base, local business support, special events, and grant funding. On May 11, 2013, those efforts will culminate with the 20th annual Evening Under the Stars fundraising gala, which has been distinguished as one of the most memorable annual events taking place in the Coachella Valley. Guests mingle under the canopy of stars on the O’Donnell golf course, set against the soaring San Jacinto Mountains. Our 2013 event has some major surprises in store and some amazing entertainment, a performance by pop music icon Cyndi Lauper. Cyndi has so much talent, and her music is beloved by millions of fans around the world. For many years, she has been a tireless participant in the struggle to end the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and we are so pleased she is available to join us for such a special occasion. Mark Walberg of Antiques Roadshow will be our Master of Ceremonies for the evening. In addition to dinner and a wonderful show, the evening features an awards presentation to honor outstanding individuals who have made a significant contribution in the fight against HIV / AIDS. This year’s honorees include: Helene Galen (Jeannette Rockefeller Humanitarian Award), Barbara and Jerry Keller (Gloria Greene Inspiration Award), and Brian Wanzek (aka Bella da Ball) (Herb Lazenby Community Service Award). We are now into the third decade of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and AIDS Assistance Program is struggling to find the ongoing financial resources to continue our important work. Our goal is to ensure that our clients continue to live healthy lives with dignity. Public support is critical to our success.

cover Cyndi Lauper is force of nature in the gay community. Her sassy personality and dogged dedication to LGBT issues collide in a kaleidoscopic whirl of enthusiasm. Co-founding True Colors Fund five years ago, an organization touting the advancement of equality for all (“especially straight people), Lauper is a celebrity coup AIDS Assistance Program and its executive directory Mark Anton has coveted for a while. “Cyndi has so much talent, and her music is beloved by millions of fans around the world,” Anton says. “The fact that she is able to be with us at our 20th Evening Under the Stars gala makes the evening that much more special.” The event, May 11 at O’Donnell Golf Club in Palm Springs, is the largest fundraiser of the year of AAP. Lauper—whose sister Ellen (not THAT Ellen) is gay—is no stranger to the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic. She joined Lady Gaga as a spokesperson for the 2010 MAC Viva Glam Campaign to educate women about HIV/AIDS around the world and continues to participate in efforts and events for organizations like AMFAR, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, speaking out about the need for education and greater resources to fight this disease. Her philanthropic work continues through her True Colors Fund, which also seeks to raise awareness about and bring an end to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth homelessness. This fearless dervish of unbridled energy is also a best-selling author. Her book, Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir, delves deep inside the life of this compelling artist. But Lauper is anything but shy when it comes to opening herself to the world. Her WE TV reality series, “Cyndi Lauper: Still So Unusual,” shows in insider view into the life of this modern renaissance woman as she juggles being a wife and mom with unabashed superstardom. She is also teaming up with gay icon Harvey Fierstein bringing the cultfavorite film Kinky Boots to life on Broadway. With so much talent she can hardly contain it in her petite 5’3” frame, Lauper’s anticipated performance at Evening Under the Stars brings a fiery element to the soft, fragrant breezes and pink glow of sunset for which the gala is heralded. But there’s more in store for 2013. EUS partygoers should prepare for a new and exciting experience at year’s anniversary gala, which is being re-imagined by the creative geniuses Larry Abel and Raymond McCallister of Socialize Palm Springs. AIDS Assistance Program Since its founding in 1991, AIDS Assistance Program of Palm Springs remains dedicated to providing nutritional support to improve the quality of the lives of those surviving HIV/AIDS. Initiated by a small group of concerned citizens, led by the late Gloria Greene and Jeannette Rockefeller, AAP provided meals to members of the community with low incomes and suffering with HIV/AIDS. Since then, AIDS Assistance Program’s client roster has grown to approximately 500 clients.

q&A Not So Unusual

Cyndi Lauper rises to the occasion yet again By G.R. Krzos

It’s a lovely year to be Cyndi Lauper. The iconic singer and performer is fresh off the heels of a bestselling memoir, a hit reality television show and is currently basking in the limelight of a Broadway debut. That would be “Kinky Boots,” the spirited “think-outside-thebox” romp that recently opened to rave reviews and for which she wrote the music and lyrics. All of that may have made Lauper a stellar choice to headline the upcoming 20th annual Evening Under The Stars soiree, which benefits AIDS Assistance Program, but it was not as if the Grammywinning performer needed to do anything more than what she was already doing. As an entertainer, her celebrity soared in the ’80s (and kept reaching newfound heights thereafter) with such hit songs as “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and “She Bop.” And as a civil rights

12 theStandardps.com

activist, she launched True Colors Fund, which fiercely promotes equal rights with a sharp lens on LGBT youth homelessness. She already had plenty of cred and dazzle. It’s just that now, Palm Springs is suddenly on the receiving end of the woman’s magic. “I am part of the community,” Lauper proudly admits about her LGBT ties, noting that her sister, Ellen, is gay. When she learned that Evening Under the Stars was an AIDS benefit, she wanted to enter the fold. “I always knew I would ‘give back,’” she adds of her philanthropic leanings. “But from 1984 to 1987, I was so hung up in my relationship with my manager—you know, everyone wants to be ‘loved,’ dahhling!—and then I was pregnant with my son, and all of sudden I was getting these letters on the Internet, and people were saying

q&A

things like, ‘The song True Colors saved my life. I was going to commit suicide. I had nobody!’ I mean, when they came out, these people lost their friends, their family, and their jobs. They lost everything. They were totally disenfranchised. And it wasn’t one letter—it was almost every single letter. And I was like, ‘Oh my god!’ “So I called my sister and said, ‘We have to do something!’” Lauper had already been performing in various LGBT and Gay Pride events over the years, but after the birth of her son, she stepped up her game further and in 2008, launched True Colors Fund. It’s no surprise, then, that she was drawn to the stage version of “Kinky Boots,” which was penned by Harvey Fierstein and directed and choreographed by Tony-winner Jerry Mitchell. “Why did I say yes? Part of it was because of Harvey and Jerry,” she says. “And yeah, I knew how to write a hook. But the story was really inspiring and I learned more about theater. I actually kind of love it.” Based on the 2005 film that found cult appeal, the musical traces the emotional ripples effects of the business partnership between a befuddled son (played by Stark Sands) who just inherited his father’s old shoe factory and a transvestite/entertainer (brought to life by the superb Billy Porter) whose über-fab stiletto boots spawn an idea to infuse some modern-day creative juju into the flailing business. “It has a big a heart,” Lauper muses of the show. Some of that can be credited to Fierstein’s shrewd and insightful writing and Mitchell’s sharp direction, but serious nods go to Lauper, whose songs rise above cliché and manage to effectively take audiences on the tricky journey of creating a real sea change within an institution and, in some respects, a pocket of culture. If the show has

heart, much of that is because Lauper successfully masters the art of evoking emotion and titillating in equal measures. “I like that the story shows that people can change their minds,” she says. “Ghandi said, ‘If you want to change the world, you change yourself,’ right? But I am here to serve the story. And to serve the story, I always try to do musical things that I think are interesting. Every character has their own unique style and I try to write that in the music.” As for what’s next, Lauper sighs and chuckles, more than hinting that, perhaps, after spending several years working on her memoir, and then “Kinky Boots”—and then her reality outing on WE TV Still So Unusual— that she may need to allow all of the stardust to settle a bit. No doubt she’ll continue to generate buzz with her work with True Colors Fund and, of course, singing and performing will always be on her creative roster. Still, she’s not opposed to another television outing—she had guest stints on Bones and Happily Divorced before Still So Unusual came along and she is jazzed to learn about the different aspects of the medium. So, is another season of Still So Unusual a possibility? Lauper can’t say—yet. But she is quick to humorously point out one thing: “Let me make myself perfectly clear and reiterate: I never thought I was ‘unusual.’ I always thought it was everybody else.” Catch Cyndi Lauper at the 20th annual Evening Under the Stars gala benefitting AIDS Assistance Program on Saturday, May 11. Cocktails and reception begin at 5:30 pm at the O’Donnell Golf Club in Palm Springs. For more information, visit www.aidsassistance.org. Lern more about True Colors Fund at http://truecolorsfund.org

feature Music, music & more music

April is Music Month in the Coachella Valley By Eric Ornelas The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is almost here and like last year, it will again take place over two consecutive weekends with the same lineup. The dates are April 12-14 and April 19-21. Although mainstream media outlets tend to focus on Coachella’s rock, indie, and hip-hop artists, electronic dance music - or EDM - has emerged as an increasingly popular genre for younger festival fans. In the past, Coachella has featured major EDM artists like Kaskade, Tiesto, Avicii, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, and Swedish House Mafia. This year, however, the big names are missing from the lineup. Nonetheless, dance music fans will most certainly find something to love about Coachella Fest 2013. Alex Clare First up is British-born singer Alex Clare, best known for his first top-10 hit “Too Close,” which peaked at number 7 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 2012. The popular dubstep track got a big boost when computer giant Microsoft featured the song in its television commercials for Internet Explorer 9. Benny Benassi Since bursting onto the club scene in 2002 with his mega-hit, “Satisfaction,” Benny Benassi has become a well-known producer and DJ within the EDM scene. With five studio albums, four compilation albums, two remix albums, and thirty-two singles under his belt, Benassi is likely to draw a big crowd. His current single, “Cinema” (with Gary Go), should be a crowd-pleaser. Bingo Players Dutch dance and electro-house DJ and production duo, Paul Baumer and Maarten Hoogstraten, also known as the Bingo Players, are best known for 2012’s “Cry (Just A Little),” which samples 1988’s “Piano In The Dark” by Brenda Russell. Other hits include “Tom’s Diner,” “Get Up,” and “Devotion,” just to name a few. The Bingo Players ranked at number 66 in DJ Mag’s top 100 DJs list for 2012.

14 theStandardps.com

Eric Prydz From Sweden, comes DJ and producer Eric Prydz (pronounced “prids”). Dance music fans will remember Prydz for his 2004 hit, “Call On Me,” which sampled 1982’s “Valerie” by Steve Winwood. Since then Prydz has found chart success with several follow-up hits, including “Proper Education” (2006), “Pjanoo” (2008), “Allein” (2012), and his current single, “Every Day.” Fedde Le Grand Ultra Records artist Fedde Le Grand found dance chart success in 2006 with “Put Your Hands Up for Detroit.” Written and produced by Fedde Le Grand, the track reached number one on the United Kingdom’s Dance Chart. Madonna sampled the song in a remixed version of “Music” as part of her promotional tour for the Music album, and the following 2008 Sticky & Sweet tour, in support of her Hard Candy album. Hardwell Robbert van de Corput, also known as Hardwell, is a Dutch progressive and electro house DJ and producer. Having collaborated and toured with Tiesto, Hardwell is a familiar name amongst dance music fans. MTV named Hardwell as the electronic dance music artist to watch in 2012. La Roux Although La Roux might seem like a solo act, it is actually a synth-pop duo composed of singer, keyboardist, co-writer and co-producer Elly Jackson, and co-writer and coproducer Ben Langmaid. La Roux was influenced by and

feature is reminiscent of 1980’s acts like Yaz, Erasure, Depeche Mode, the Human League, and OMD. La Roux’s biggest hits include “In For The Kill” and “Bulletproof.” Major Lazer Major Lazer is a musical project originally created by DJ and producer Diplo and producer Switch. Today, Switch is out of the group, replaced with Jillionair and Walshy Fire. Major Lazer has released two studio albums, and produced several remixes for artists such as the Beastie Boys, No Doubt, Prodigy, and Bruno Mars. Moby Moby became a major force in electronic dance music during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Moby is an American singer-songwriter, musician, DJ and photographer. His iconic 1999 album, Play, sold 6000 copies in its first week and produced eight singles, eventually selling over 10 million copies worldwide. Moby’s biggest hits include “Move” (1993), “Everytime You Touch Me” (1995), and “Go” (1991). OMD (Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark) British New Wave group OMD found fame in 1980 with their singles “Electricity” and “Enola Gay.” In 1985, OMD released “So In Love” as the first single from the album Crush. A pop radio success, the song rose to number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The success of “So In Love” was followed by “If You Leave,” recorded for the soundtrack to the film Pretty In Pink. It reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in May 1986. OMD’s 12th studio album, English Electric, is set for an early April release. Paul Oakenfold Paul Oakenfold is a popular English record producer and trance DJ. Oakenfold’s first official studio album was 2002’s Bunkka. The album sold over one million copies worldwide. Oakenfold has remixed tracks from the likes of Snoop Dogg, Cher, and the Rolling Stones.

With several hits of his own (“Starry Eyed Surprise,” “Hypnotized,” “Faster Kill Pussycat,” and more), Oakenfold’s set is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Thomas Gold From Berlin, we have up and coming DJ and producer Thomas Gold. Gold’s remix of Adele’s “Set Fire To The Rain” has been viewed over 14 million times on YouTube. His debut release on Axtone Records, “Sing2Me,” reached the number-two spot on Beatport. Wolfgang Gartner Ultra Records artist Wolfgang Gartner rounds out this year’s list of Coachella EDM artists. An American DJ and producer, Gartner, has racked up eight number-one tracks on the Beatport Top 10 chart. Gartner has collaborated on projects with artists that include Deadmau5, Skrillex, and Wil.i.am of the Black-eyed Peas. Having last performed at Coachella in 2010, Gartner’s set will no-doubt be a popular one. For a full line-up go to www.coachella.com

STAGECOACH Once the final act leaves the stage at Coachella Fest, the Indio Polo Grounds undergo a slight transformation to prepare the venue for its next event: Stagecoach, California’s Country Music Festival. This year’s lineup includes Country music heavy hitters like Toby Keith, Lady Antebellum, Trace Adkins, Dierks Bently, Zac Brown Band, Dwight Yoakam, Charlie Daniels Band, Tanya Tucker, Phil Vassar, and many more. The annual 3-day festival is scheduled for April 26-28. For more information visit www.stagecoachfestival.com

Reports suggest NFL is preparing for a major ‘coming out’ announcement The head of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) said that the league’s union has been working hard to prepare players for the “unavoidable announcement” that an NFL player will soon come out as gay. Domonique Foxworth, President of the NFLPA, told a Baltimore radio station this week that his organization has had “quite a few meetings with a number of organizations” to help educate and prepare players. “It’s important that we educate our guys and be ready for this inevitability,” he told WNST Radio. Foxworth’s revelation coincides with a report by CBS Sports columnist Mike Freeman on Tuesday who wrote that, according to sources, a current NFL player is close to publicly revealing that he is gay. Based on interviews over the past several weeks with current and former players, I’m told that a current gay NFL player is strongly considering coming out publicly within the next few months — and after doing so, the player would attempt to continue his career. I’m told this player feels the time is now for someone to take this step — despite homophobic remarks from San Francisco 49ers defensive back Chris Culliver and the controversy arising recently at the Indianapolis Scouting combine, when prospects were asked questions about their sexuality. Freeman wrote that, according to sources, the player’s true concern is not the reaction inside an NFL locker room, but outside of it. “The player fears he will suffer serious harm from homophobic fans, and that is the only thing preventing him from coming out,” according to Freeman, who notes that he does not yet know who the player is. “When the public finds out about it, it’s going to be a media

storm and it’s going to be a lot of press and a lot of attention, and probably not all of it’s gonna be positive,” Foxworth said. “But the NFLPA, as long as I’m president of it, is going to be behind that player and providing support.” There has never been an active openly gay player in a major American team sport, but Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita said he thinks “the players of the NFL have been ready for an openly gay player for quite some time now.” Fujita, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, and Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe, are among a growing coalition of straight allies in the professional sports arena who have taken a public stand in supporting LGBT rights and marriage equality, and who have said the time is right for openly gay professional athlete. But Seattle Seahawks defensive end Chris Clemons had a different take, and questions whether the motive is to end the secrecy, or perhaps a publicity stunt. “I’m not against anyone but I think it’s a selfish act. They just trying to make themselves bigger than the team,” Clemons said. Former San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Kwame Harris, who was publicly outed days before the Super Bowl in January following an altercation with a former boyfriend, said in an interview with CNN on Friday that he wished he would have come out while he was still playing. “The cost was great (to) not speak candidly (and be) open about myself in complete manner,” said Harris. “If I could have done it differently, I would have hoped I found the strength (to come out).” “I want people, whether gay athletes, athletes still in the closet, or youths who are not sure what their sexuality is to know those are common feelings,” he said. “Don’t feel alone in having them.”

Gay Tea Party activist denounces same-sex marriage at NOM rally Doug Mainwaring, the openly gay founder of the National Capital Tea Party Patriots, spoke towards the end of the National Organization for Marriage’s rally on the National Mall Last week where he warned that same-sex marriage will “unravel” marriage and “undefine children.” Mainwaring, who in an essay wrote that he lives with his ex-wife but “because

of my predilections, we deny our own sexual impulses,” urged the Supreme Court to “ignore the media’s relentless, manufactured urgency to institute same-sex marriage.” “As a gay man, I can state categorically, it is not homophobic to oppose same-sex marriage,” Mainwaring told the crowd, “to the Supreme Court, legislators and jurists around the country: slow this train down.”

Northern Ireland faces legal challenge over refusal to allow same-sex marriage Northern Ireland’s power-sharing government will soon face a human rights legal case over its refusal to allow gay couples to marry, warns Amnesty International and local LGBT rights organization the Rainbow Project. Last year, lawmakers voted to make Northern Ireland the only part of the United Kingdom where LGBT people are excluded from the United Kingdom’s proposed marriage equality, which was passed in the House of Commons in February. Spokesperson for the groups say “it is inevitable that the LGBT community will use the Human Rights Act and European human rights legislation to force Northern Ireland to bring the law into line with Britain,” reported The Guardian. Legal proceedings will likely be tried in Belfast, which, ironically, was the first city in the UK to host a gay civil union in 2005. Patrick Corrigan, Amnesty’s program director in Northern Ireland, said states can not discriminate against same sex couples in

different parts of its territory. “That obligation is clear in international law. This means marriage should be available to same sex couples in Northern Ireland just as soon as it will be to couples in other parts of the UK,” he said. The Rainbow Project said excluding Northern Ireland from gay marriage law meant that if a married LGBT couple from England relocated there due to work or family reasons, their marriage would in effect be null and void. As late as 1982 gay sex was still a criminal activity in Northern Ireland because the country was not included in the UK’s gay law reforms of the 1960s. Gay rights campaigner Jeff Dudgeon took a case to the European court of human rights in 1981 which forced the UK government, in the face of opposition from unionist politicians such as the Rev Ian Paisley, to decriminalize homosexuality in Northern Ireland.

fashion trends You are what you wear by Gerolamo Viola

I can imagine that to most people, hearing talk about fashion and Haute Couture might sound a bit boring and dated in these confusing times where nobody wears couture other than those going to a red carpeted event and having to answer the consequential, stupid and senseless question (yes the only one question) Who are you wearing? So I thought that I might tackle the topic from a social and extremely modern point of view. After all, today’s society, movement, trends and personalities from the show biz world will be the “costume” columns of tomorrow. For those who like to listen carefully to the words of songs (and I do) there’s one particular song from Madonna that at the beginning, really didn’t mean much to me other than a sexual innuendo, having chosen to titillate us on that “particular” spot for years. So I was listening to this song (as I have millions of times) and the only thing that came to mind was...”here she goes again, trying to turn us on using sex”. But, as most of us know, Madonna is not a superficial

and material girl at once...Not anymore and probably has never been. She is very attentive to what she has to propose, knowing that things she says have a very deep sentiment in all sorts of fields in life. Being a Leo with a Virgo rising sun makes her just that: Not an “artistic” person in the sense that the world interprets art but rather a “nose” to surround herself with the right talents at the right moment. If you listen to “Celebration”, you can hear her say: “Haven’t I seen you somewhere before? You look familiar, you wanna to dance? I guess I just didn’t recognize you with your clothes on?” Now, you would think that the only reason she did not recognize him was because she couldn’t define him by his sexual attributes. Now, I suggest you to reverse the question: “I guess I didn’t recognize you with your clothes off”. In both cases the importance of being defined is crucial to being someone, to be accepted and like Madge says, “Recognize”. Now the father of us all, Oscar Wilde” used to say that: “You get into certain circles either by birth right or because you’re cute”...more

or less the sense of it is that if you look handsome and groomed but don’t have a penny to buy a candy, you fit in, if you are ugly and rich and your name is one of the elite, you fit too! That could only mean one thing. No matter what people say, the clothes and the things we wear define who we are. With the only exception that, if you are handsome or beautiful, nobody cares what you are wearing. There was a time when “La Manga” was everything, when C. Balenciaga could rip apart the sleeve (La manga in Spanish) of a dress right before the show begun, or an hour before the dress had to be boarded on the ship to travel to the USA to dress Mona Bismark or Barbara Hutton. Those romantic times are no longer exist. So now what? Why do we get dressed? To impress people with our sense of style? To show them our status? Men and women dress for different reasons. The majority of men dress because going around naked wouldn’t be appropriate, meaning they really don’t care what they wear. To women it’s all another story...In reality, for both sexes there are many reasons why but to explain this I would need many more pages in the magazine, so until the next issue, Ciao.

Doggy parenting: tips for guiding your dog through the ‘teen’ years specific mental, social, physical and nutritional requirements that often go unmet, so it is important to make sure we are addressing all the aspects that are part of these ‘teenage’ years.” When your dog goes through the “teen” life stage - from about 6 months to 2 years - keep these tips in mind. * Curb bad behaviors: Chewing shoes, soiling the carpet, surfing the counter for scraps of food - these are just some of the behaviors that come up as your still-young dog grows into his adult body. It is important to focus on training during this time to break bad habits otherwise you could be dealing with them for life. Attending training classes not only helps your dog learn how to behave, it also helps owners discover solutions for unwanted behaviors. The added benefit of training is that it provides an opportunity to create a strong bond at one of the most impressionable periods of your dog’s life.

Most pet owners can tell you that the first few days with a puppy in the house can be a handful, but the job of being a good pet parent does not stop when your new pal sleeps through the night for the first time. After you finish guiding your pup through his earliest life stages, it is important to keep in mind that he will be going through his own version of the “teen” years and will rely on a guiding hand. The accelerated development of dogs may make it seem as though they move straight from puppy to adult, but just like people, they also have an adolescent stage. Although they may look grown up, they are still experiencing changes that can have a major impact on their behavior and health. “Many pet owners may not realize that dogs experience adolescence,” says Jeff Werber, DVM, a nationally known veterinarian. “At this developmental stage, dogs are no longer puppies, but they are also not quite adults. Adolescent dogs have

24 theStandardps.com

* Establish good eating habits: Just as kids have different nutritional needs than infants and adults, adolescent dogs need food uniquely tailored to their in-between needs. As your dog’s body grows and changes, certain nutrients are particularly important for brain and skeletal development and digestive health. Find a dog food that is rich in nutrients like Nutro Natural Choice Young Adult Formula that is protein-rich and energy-controlled to give your dog the right balance for his continued development. Keeping the right energy level is essential to preventing dogs from becoming overweight. When obesity starts at a young age, it can be difficult to fight, and could lead to problems like cancer, arthritis and diabetes in your pet. * Supervise socializing: Letting your dog interact with other animals is an essential part of responsible pet ownership. However, at the adolescent stage, it is important that you guide your dog’s interactions carefully. As dogs’ reproductive systems develop, both males and females can show signs of aggression. You may also find your male dog marking his territory and female dogs might try to flirt with males. When you start to see these behaviors frequently, it is probably time to discuss spaying or neutering with your vet. Not only can these procedures help correct some hormonally driven bad habits, they will also prevent unwanted litters of new puppies. Providing the right care and guidance for your pet will set him up for a life of good habits and health. To learn more about the young adult dog life stage visit www.naturalchoiceyoungadult.com.

Is Buying a Home Still a good Investment for your Money?

Our economy continues to recover and home sales are red hot in many markets. In high demand areas, homes for sale are hard to come by, and finding the perfect home is near impossible, which is driving prices up. It is important to note that there are still a few areas of the country with homes available for sale that are sitting on the market for a while ~ some of this is due to economic reasons, and some due to simply bad weather. You may find that purchasing a short sale or foreclosure is the way to go, if you have the stomach to compete with all the investors you’ll be competing with. Many banks have the have realized the quickly improving market conditions, and are not as aggressive on pricing as they used to be. Some work may be needed on foreclosures and short sales, just as with any other home that is for sale, so be sure to do a thorough inspection. More and more people are buying to get away from renting, which makes homes more in demand, so be prepared to pay market value or more to get your perfect home in this market. It is a competitive market with rising prices and rising interest rates, so if you are looking to buy, it is wise to act fast. Always put in your very best offer to prevent losing the house that you really want. Buying a home is still a wise investment in 2013; and with the direction of home process, it seems continue to be the best investment available for your cash, whether purchasing a primary residence, or rental property. Sunline Transit Agency – Leading the way in Alternative Fuel Technology By Kathleen Bennett

SunLine Transit Agency (STA) has been dedicated to alternative fueled vehicle technology and innovative infrastructure dating back to 1994. SunLine was the first transit agency in the nation to convert its entire fleet to CNG fueled vehicles. In 2000, SunLine moved forward with the first public refueling station to provide hydrogen, as well as HCNG, a blend of hydrogen and natural gas. While other transit agencies are only beginning to venture into the hydrogen arena introducing a first generation hydrogen vehicle, SunLine has seven generations of hydrogen buses. No other transit system can make that claim in the United States. SunLine now uses the most innovative technology in the world today on the road to producing zero emissions. The fleet is now in great shape providing public transit using environmentally friendly vehicles as they continue to focus on bringing the future into the present by expanding the number of zero emission hydrogen fueled buses in service. In 1994 the Agency converted its entire fleet from diesel fueled to compressed natural gas (CNG) overnight. The Agency’s fueling station, SunFuels, established a 24 hour, seven day a week fueling facility that supports our hydrogen, CNG infrastructure. The Valley has over 1,000 CNG vehicles that fuel in our station. This includes public/ public partnerships and agencies such as the Waste Management of the Desert, Time Warner, CVAG street sweepers, to name a few. SunLine proudly continues to maintain its leadership position in the alternative fuel and clean technology arena with the addition of the Agency’s 7th generation hydrogen fueled vehicle added into service in December, 2011. With flowing stars and stripes representing its birth place and the stately bald eagle symbolizing strength and freedom, this bus undoubtedly sends a message of pride and service to the Coachella Valley, as well as the entire nation. The launch of this “Made in America” bus directly leads to

26 theStandardps.com

the commercialization of fuel cell technology and inevitably will be associated with workforce development in the industry. With the launch, transit agencies across the country will now have the ability to purchase a 40 foot fuel cell bus that meets the FTA Buy America Requirements. This marks a significant milestone on hydrogen fuel cell technology development for the transportation industry. The result – the first of its kind, 40 foot all American made fuel cell bus. Sunline looks forward to the two additional American Fuel Buses to be added to the fleet in late 2013 or early 2014, and is proud to have received numerous awards as leader in the alternative fuel arena. In February, 2013 the Agency hosted their 6th Annual State of Public Transit Luncheon, A Partner for Economic Development and broke ground on their new 25,000 square foot Administration Building and Transit Hub which is expected to be completed by the summer of 2014. This past year they celebrated their 35th anniversary of providing public transit in the Coachella Valley. In 1977, they rolled into service with 22 buses, (diesel fueled) a $1.9 million budget and 500,000 passengers. They now have 69 fixed route buses and 31 para-transit vans – all of which are cutting edge, alternative fueled vehicles, an operating budget of $22 million and $14 million capital budget. Ridership has increased from 500,000 to more than 4.5 million riders in fiscal year 2012. The SunLine Transit Agency has grown with the Valley. What a difference thirty five years makes! Guypop.com is helping gay men discover who among their Facebook friends could be more than “just friends.” The new bygay-men-for-gay-men site connects guys with potential dates in their own inner circle by having them secretly select Facebook friends they would consider hooking up with. Guypop.com only reveals the interest to both guys if and when they both select one another. Here’s how it works: 1. Guys connect their Facebook account with Guypop. Guypop.com will never post anything to anyone’s Facebook profile without approval. 2. Guypop.com displays all of the guys’ male friends. Guys simply click the Facebook friends they’re interested in. (Since Facebook doesn’t share sexual orientation, Guypop.com has no way of removing straight men from the list. Clicking the “X” button on a friend’s photo instantly hides them.) 3. Guypop keeps the secret. Guypop.com won’t reveal interest to the Facebook friend that has been selected… 4. That is, unless the interest is mutual. When both Facebook friends click that they’re interested in the other, Guypop.com will send an email to both guys to let them know. Where guys go from there is up to them! Spring Zing by Chef Andre Carthen

Spring is the time when we come out from under the covers and welcome the newness that nature has to offer. Crisp cool mornings, colorful bouquets of flowers blanket the landscape of our scenic desert and the farmers markets are a buzz with fresh baby greens, and an abundance of Spring’s booty. It’s the time to cleanse from the heavier, storage foods of winter, when our bodies naturally want to begin eating lighter, cleaner, crisp foods, to lighten itself for the warm days ahead. … a great time for you to welcome a little Spring Zing into your life. Planning that fabulous Sunday brunch? Your local farmer’s market is the place to shop! Cooking hint; Many of these tender young vegetables are more flavorful if cooked quickly, so here are a few ways to prepare and savor the bountiful of Spring’s nutritious delights. RAW…need I say more? STEAMING: Steaming is done when you cook over water. Use a steamer basket over simmering water. This is done usually when you want to cook vegetables, meat or fish rather quickly. Bring water to a high simmer before adding food to the basket above. HEALTHY STIR-FRY: Healthy stir-fry is done in a wok or large skillet. Instead of using oil, add 1 TBS of broth to a hot pan on medium high heat. When broth is hot add vegetables in order given in recipe stirring constantly. This is done quickly so vegetables are still a little crisp inside. HEALTHY SAUTE: Start your Healthy Sauté by spraying stainless

28 theStandardps.com

steel skillet with cooking spray, and 1 tbs. olive oil. Heat pan over medium heat and add 1 tbs. of broth. If cooking with onions add once the broth begins to bubble; sauté stirring frequently. After the onions have cooked for about 5 minutes, you can then add other ingredients such as garlic, or fresh ginger. Once they have had a chance to cook together for just another minute, add other vegetables. This method enables you to have flavorful sautéed vegetables. If not cooking with onions add hard veggies first, such as chopped carrots, celery, bell peppers…etc. BLANCHING: Blanching is done when you want vegetables barely cooked and still crunchy at the center. Prepare vegetables by cutting them the desired size. Bring salted water to a high boil. While water is coming to a boil get colander ready for draining and set up a bowl of ice water. Put vegetables in boiling water and boil just about 2-3 minutes, depending on how thick or big vegetables are. Drain vegetables through colander and immediately put into ice water. When vegetables have had a chance to get cold all the way through, drain again in colander. If serving cold with dressing it is good to dry vegetables before dressing them. They can also be saved for later and reheated. Just remember the way that food is cooked is absolutely essential for avoiding unnecessary nutrient loss. Locals can discover the freshest and best locally grown produce every weekend here in the valley.

fitness HOW DO CELEBRITIES STAY IN SHAPE? by dennis mason, C.P.T.

Movie stars, recording artists, television personalities and other public celebrities always seem to look terrific, fit and healthy. How do they do that? What do they know that we don’t know? How can I achieve that same look? I work out, but why don’t I seem to get the results I want? These are just some of the questions I hear frequently. Celebrities like Brad Pitt, Jillian Michaels, George Clooney and Cyndi Lauper, just to name a few, are always in the public eye. Therefore, staying fit is important, not just from the health standpoint but from a business point as well. If you look at their exercise and diet programs you will find some differences from one person to another. However, the key is regularity in exercising and what they eat. There is no magic formula. There is no “secret” that they hold. But, the one thing they all use is a personal trainer or coach to keep them honest and on track. See, many people think that going to a gym is a good way to stay fit. However, according to a recent national study, 95% of the people who join any given gym will fail to reach their fitness goals. The main reason is that most people know almost nothing about how their body works, what to do to drop body fat or gain muscle, how to set up an effective exercise program, or even how to perform proper movements without injury. Even with all the professional personal trainers and coaches around today, very few people enlist their services. I guess it’s like not asking for directions when lost for fear of embarrassment. Interestingly, the celeb’s hire personal trainers, amateur golfers consult with a ‘golf pro’, tennis players seek out a tennis pro to help with their performance; and of course we all consult doctors, lawyers, plumbers, electricians, auto repair specialists and so on for advice. But, when it comes to taking care of their body, most people use the excuse that health and fitness professionals are ‘too expensive’ or simply say, “I know how to do that.” Really? Well, if everybody ‘knows how to do that, then why do we have two thirds of our population overweight and/or out of shape? For your own safety and good results, please don’t pretend that you know everything about how to work out. Locate a well-trained and experienced trainer. Better yet, if you need a jump start or a brush up, look for an experienced fitness coach; one who understands your needs and limitations, as well as one who has an in-depth understanding of how the human body functions. Look around! Not all fitness professionals are the same. Not all work for, or are employed by, a gym; in fact, most actually work independently. Finally, make

30 theStandardps.com

sure you are both on the same track of thinking. Hiring a professional is not a luxury; it is the best investment that you will ever make. Don’t short change yourself. nutrition Is It Diet Food… or Is It Junk Food?

by Linda Bergersen, M.S. Holistic Nutritionist

In dieting, everyone wants their cake, and eat it too. And we’ve got just that. Diets everywhere are appealing to those who don’t want to change their eating habits, by including pizza, burgers, ice cream; you name it in their low-cal meal offerings. Most diet food manufacturers target the lose weight without concern of losing health audience. Think about it…are you one of these consumers? Do you read the ingredients listed on the labels or trust what they tell you? Keep in mind that the four main culprits to an unhealthful diet are: Refined sugars (maltodextrin, corn syrup, and dextrose also have refined sugar qualities) Refined flours Hydrogenated oils/trans fat High fructose corn syrup Also contributors: Dyes (such as Yellow No. 5), and chemical sugar substitutes, such as aspartame and sucralose. (Splenda is a sucralose product). Sugar substitutes are proven to cause various health problems in the body, and, as a surprise to most, they actually cause weight gain rather than weight loss. Those ingredients are the first things to look for on food labels to try to determine the nutritional quality of a diet food. Don’t be fooled by catchy wording on labels, such as skinny, low fat, etc. It’s been found that most low-fat foods actually will include more sugar in order to improve the taste. Fat has been recognized now as a lesser foe anyway. Diet food manufacturers are mainly lowering the calories by cutting the size and portions of the foods as well as very often substituting an anti-nutritious sugar with an even worse sugar substitute. We can’t seem to get away from all the refined flours and sugars in our foods, whether diet or non-diet. We can only try to eliminate as much as possible by reading every ingredient label we can. This is what, in the end, keeps the weight off, and, at the same time, builds a more nutritious body. Junk foods are called such because of the lesser quality ingredients. A hamburger would not be a junk food if it had a 100% whole-wheat bun, and grass-fed, organic beef. A candy bar would not be junk if it had unrefined sugars and cold-pressed oils. Most granola bars these days could very well qualify as junk food. Sure you can diet with fewer calories, less quantity in servings.

But eating less by including refined foods is not more nutritious. Fruits and vegetables have fewer calories than any diet food out there. Very simply put, fruits and vegetables are the way to go in losing weight, and are the perfect substitutes for our ever-present refined foods. How things have become upended over the years. We began substituting our fruits and vegetables with bags of chips… and now we need to turn it all back to the way it was.
