INSIGHT MODERNISM WEEK AT A GLANCE Modernism Week (Feb. 14-24, 2013) once again returns to Palm Springs this month, not only bringing throngs of mid-century modern enthusiasts, but also national and international media attention. Conceived in 2006 as a way of celebrating and honoring the rich collection of mid-century modern architecture and design in Palm Springs, the event has blossomed into an enormous 11-day celebration of mid-century modern design, architecture and culture. This year, more than 125 events are scheduled during this multi-day experience, including architectural tours, films, lectures, an architectural symposium, educational events, and chic, fun parties in cool mid-century modern homes. As one of the founding organizations of Modernism Week, the Palm Springs Art Museum is once again playing a key role in the programs offered in the 11 day period. A symposium at the museum on February 23 called The Public and the Modern House, brings together representatives of numerous modern houses that are open to the public both across the United States and internationally, including Sunnylands Center and Gardens, Frank Lloyd Wright’s brilliantly designed Fallingwater, Phillip Johnson’s iconic Glass House, the Van Schijndel House in Utrecht, Netherlands, and the museum’s Frey House II. Panelists will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing these modern houses and will be followed by an afternoon tour of area homes, including the Grace Miller House (Richard Neutra), a Steel House (Wexler & Harrison), the Loewy House (Albert Frey), and the Edris House (E. Stewart Williams). A reception will be held at the final home, the Sieman Residence (William Cody). In addition, the museum will feature a Mad Men-themed party on February 21 in the museum’s future Architecture and Design Center, scheduled to open in 2014. This building, a former bank currently being rehabilitated by the museum to house the museum’s growing collection of architecture and design objects, will be transformed for the evening into the “West Coast branch” of the television show’s fictional advertising agency. Various vignettes featuring period furniture and design objects will be set up in the building, and attendees are encouraged to come wearing vintage cocktail attire. At the event, they will learn why the museum chose to rehabilitate this iconic bank into a new architecture and design center and better understand the many challenges that exist in transforming a 1961 bank into a state-of-the-art museum, while keeping the distinctive retro architecture intact. Popular double-decker bus tours will run throughout the week, showcasing mid-century architectural classics. A vintage car show and a vintage Airstream trailer show will be available for touring and a new event called the Pre-Fab Showcase and Modern Living Expo will demonstrate the latest materials, technologies and furnishings for the home and showcase the very latest in affordable pre-fab housing, along with solar and green technology and eco friendly trends. MOD ABOUT YOU

GET YOUR GROOVE ON DURING HOT PALM SPRINGS' COOLEST WEEK Celebrate all things modern Feb. 14-24, 2013 during one of the Coachella Valley’s most popular—if not hippest—events. Modernism Week is a 10-day party reflecting and honoring the distinctive Palm Springs design aesthetic originating in the 1950s and 1960s. This look, characterized by clean lines and elegant simplicity, redefined forms of art, architecture, and design. Held in various venues throughout the city, the event easily offers more than 100 entertaining and educational events, including the Modernism Show, tour, films, lectures, swank parties, art exhibitions, music, food, fun, and more. Many events are free to the public. In fact, some valley visitors who inadvertently find their way to events are so taken with desert modernism that they end up buying their own “architecturally significant” property in the valley. Must-do activities this year include architectural bus tours, home tours, vintage trailer show, Edris House tour (E. Steward Williams) and William Krisel’s Twin Palms tour, Sunnylands tours (see the revered estate where Leonore and Walter Annenberg lived and entertained), a “Mad Men Evening (fundraiser for the Architectural and Design Council), and the always interesting Frey II house tours. If you’re in the

market to purchase midcentury furniture, clothing, or accessories—or if you just want to do some retro “window shopping”—the Modernism Show at Palm Springs Convention Center (Feb. 16-17) offers scads of groovy stuff from vendors and dealers across the country. If you seek a more intellectual exploration of the genre, find a lecture or film that stimulates your synapses, such as the Charles Phoenix Retro Slide Show, Marimekko: Behind the Scene, the Future of Frank Lloyd Wright, Art and Architecture, Mid-Century Moderns: The Homes that Define Palm Springs, Modern Landscape: Telling Our Story, and more. For novice modernites, here’s a little back story: Palm Springs modernism draws much of its inspiration from the desert landscape, from the 360-degree horizons to the clarity of light to the natural combination of sand and rock. Pioneering architects of the era, such as Donald Wexler, E. Stewart Williams, Albert Frey, William F. Cody, Richard Neutra, and others, used complementary materials—think steel, concrete, and glass—to create commercial and residential buildings that are today’s masterpieces of midcentury design.

FEATURE PALM SPRINGS MODERNISM WEEK TO OFFER SOMETHING FOR EVERY DESIGN LOVER

Palm Springs Modernism Week is one of the country’s most popular annual events, bringing together professionals and fans seeking to celebrate everything that accompanied this popular 1950s and 60s design aesthetic, which typified clean, simple lines and celebrated elegant informality. Over the last several years, attendance has grown, with an estimated 35,000 people in 2012. As the only such event in the country when it was launched in 2006, Palm Springs Modernism Week has helped fuel a robust national interest in the preservation and appreciation of modernism. The event supports local and state preservation organizations in their efforts to preserve modernist architecture throughout the state of California. It also awards annual scholarships to high school students who have selected architecture and design as their career paths. “Based on the enormous enthusiasm we have seen for months in advance, early indications are that 2013 will be bigger and better than ever,” says Jacques Caussin, Board Chairman of Modernism Week. “As early as this past summer, our loyal fans began requesting information about the exciting new events that we’ve scheduled, and we think returning attendees and new visitors alike will be very impressed with the lineup.” There are some eclectic additions to that lineup, including the Hospitality Lounge, which will be open all days at the Hilton Hotel in Palm Springs and will offer information and credit card ticket sales. Attendees can also visit the MODSHOP at the Raymond-Lawrence Gallery in the Uptown Design District for a variety of private-label and branded Modernism Week items and exclusive products. The Modernism Week PreFab Showcase will be expanded this year to include several prefab structures that combine world-class architecture with green, eco-friendly, and sustainable construction. A new component of the PreFab Showcase is the Modern Living Expo,

which will feature exhibitors displaying smart living ideas in a thoroughly unique environment. The Modern Living Expo will take place over two weekends, February 16-19 and February 22-24, and will present the best in cutting-edge modern home design and everyday living. The Expo will include smart home technology, green living, and the most beautiful ideas available in finishes and furnishings, with a focus on the modern home. The Marrakesh Country Club Designer Showcase tour includes four Hollywood Regency homes with distinctive features including Pullman entries, mansard roofs, private courtyards, and back terraces. Attendees can experience the ultimate marriage of midcentury architecture and modern creativity, as some of California’s top interior designers reinterpret these classic homes. William Miller and Déjà Vu Vintage Finery will present Fashion Forward: A Vintage Clothing Retrospective on Sunday, February 17th at 5 pm inside the Horizon Ballroom of the Hilton Hotel. This fully accessorized, highly stylized fashion show will feature the glamorous trends of yesteryear. The runway will come alive with glimpses into the post-World War II era of Dior’s “New Look.” From the swinging, miniskirted and shift-dressed 1960s, to the sit-in, bell-bottomed, independent movement of the 1970s, and even the shoulder-padded, belted, overthe-top 1980s fashions, these three decades of fashion will delight. These are just a few of the exciting and eclectic events offered during Modernism Week.. No matter what your midcentury modern leanings—or if you’re just the curious sort with an eye for cool, clean, and funky—Modernism Week promises to titillate your design aesthetic. For a complete list of event locations, dates, and times and to purchase tickets, visit www.modernismweek.com and check back regularly throughout the week for updates.

Rick Friedman, President of the Hamptons Expo Group says of the fair’s inaugural year, “The fair’s presentation of high quality art from prestigious galleries, coupled with world-class production standards created quite a buzz in the desert. We generated a robust turnout of nearly 10,000 people, consisting of the wealthy and sophisticated gated community set, art loving snowbirds, the culturally active gay community and the general public. STEVE CHASE HUMANITARIAN AWARDS LOOK FORWARD … WHILE LOOKING BACK BY BARRY DAYTON

Black-tie and beautiful gowns … Broadway stars and Hollywood celebrities … it seems like the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gets more glamorous every year. But the event co-chairs never lose sight that the gala is all about honoring the commitment of those who know that, almost 32 years after the first AIDS diagnoses in June of 1981, AIDS is not over. The 19th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards will be no different. Whether well-known or lesser-known … living with HIV or friend-of-the-cause … this year’s honorees continue the tradition by helping to raise well over $1 million and focusing attention on caring for those who need the help of their community, as it envisions a vaccine, a cure, and an AIDS-free generation. MARIO LOPEZ ARTS AND ACTIVISM AWARD From his public service announcements for the AIDS Walk Los Angeles: “AIDS is still with us and we must continue the fight.” JAKE GLASER PARTNERS IN ACTIVISM AWARD His mother’s HIV infection from a blood transfusion only made her more resolute to fight pediatric AIDS … Born with HIV, he’s devoted to empowering and educating others to overcome the AIDS epidemic. LORNA LUFT COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD Before performing at the 2011 Steve Chase: “I’ve witnessed incredible care and compassion in the eyes of D.A.P. staff and volunteers. Please tour Desert AIDS Project and see it for yourself.”

ANNETTE BLOCH 100 WOMEN AWARD Offering her $1 million gift at the 2012 Steve Chase: “Since people with HIV are more likely to develop certain types of cancer, I want to help extend the compassionate care I’ve seen at D.A.P. with a cancer care center.” JULIAN DICIURCIO PARTNERS FOR LIFE AWARD Logging more than 7,000 hours of volunteer time for D.A.P.: For 13 years, he’s been a member of their Care Team, providing emotional and practical support to clients, while also being an annual donor and leaving a gift in his estate plan. While AIDS has never been a disease that affects only gay men, they have consistently been … and continue to be … one of the high-risk groups for HIV infection. Perhaps one of the people most associated with the grim earliest years of battling AIDS was the iconic 1980s artist and openly-gay social activist Keith Haring. The art he created in the streets and subways of New York City seemed to resonate with energy and community spirit. Although a strong advocate of safer sex, Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988. After establishing the Keith Haring Foundation in 1989, with a mandate to provide funding and imagery to AIDS service organizations and children’s programs, Haring died of AIDS-related complications in early 1990. Last summer, the Keith Haring Foundation granted permission to use a piece of artwork that, while officially untitled, D.A.P. affectionately referred to as “Hearts in a Heart.”

FEATURE by Rick Draughon, who has raised more than a half million dollars for the Walk over the years, thanks to an anonymous beneficiary. Scott Nevins, an enduring D.A.P. supporter – who will once again be doing double-duty at the 2013 Steve Chase gala as red carpet host and auctioneer – was back as the Walk’s emcee, keeping up a constant patter from the float with Parade watchers. Among the others waving from the float was Mitch, the D.A.P. client who offered to tell his story in the new “Heart of D.A.P.” public service announcement campaign – check out the entire playlist of spots on D.A.P.’s YouTube channel.

Perhaps you’ve already seen the Keith Haring figures when they first appeared on the float that Desert AIDS Project created and used twice in parades in November and December. The float’s first appearance was during the second half of its 25th Anniversary Palm Springs AIDS Walk, which joined the Pride Parade, to be honored with the “2012 Spirit of Stonewall Advocate of the Year Award” in recognition of a quarter-century of fundraising for AIDS care and HIV prevention.

Since World AIDS Day 2012 fell on the same day as the annual, hometown-favorite Festival of Lights Parade, D.A.P. brought the float back out of the proverbial mothballs for its second appearance. Lorna Luft, one of the honorees at this year’s Steve Chase gala, joined D.A.P. board members and long-time volunteers in waving to the cheering crowd from among the twinkling Keith Haring graphics. Whether 28 years of Desert AIDS Project … 25 years of the Palm Springs AIDS Walk … 19 years of the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards … or whatever it takes, until HIV and AIDS are gone from our beautiful desert community, D.A.P.’s donors, volunteers, and staff will continue offering.

Timothy Ray Brown, famously known as “The Berlin Patient” – the only person believed to be cured of AIDS – was joined on the float

STEVE CHASE

GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN BY BARRY DAYTON

Fans of Modernism Week in Palm Springs might know Steve Chase as an iconic interior designer who got his start with Arthur Elrod. An interview with him in the October 1980 issue of Palm Springs Life said “Slender and tanned, prematurely gray at age 38, interior designer Stephen Chase has already received a generous share of international recognition. His work has won numerous design awards

and appears frequently in publications like ‘Architectural Digest.’” As an early volunteer, donor, and board member of Desert AIDS Project, Steve Chase was instrumental in bringing the national tour of An Event in 3 Acts: Heartstrings, the AIDS Memorial Quilt, and YOU to Palm Springs in 1992. The weekend-long event included a performance at the McCallum Theater and a dinner, completely underwritten by Chase, at Wally’s Desert Turtle Restaurant, followed by a ceremonial unfolding and viewing of “The Quilt,” famously created by the NAMES Project. The event program, filled with letters of support from community leaders and other organizations, contained a letter from Dr. David Kaminsky at Eisenhower Medical Center that began: We share a dream that we will not have to open the Quilt next year, or Walk under the desert sun, or ask for money … that order will be restored to the world. The battle is ten years old, a decade of incomprehensible illness, loss, separation, fear, and the spreading, unrelenting spreading of this virus. But D.A.P. seemed to already know that the end of the virus was wishful thinking because the following year they organized “A Valentine’s Gala” fundraiser where they honored Betty Ford, former First Lady and Rancho Mirage resident who chaired the very first Desert AIDS Walk with Anne and Kirk Douglas; Joan Kroc, the very philanthropic heiress to the McDonalds fortune who funded D.A.P.’s first medical clinic; and Steve Chase. Sadly, Steve Chase died of AIDS the following year. But, once again, Desert AIDS Project only strengthened its resolve to continue its efforts to provide the care, prevention, and advocacy that each year seemed to be more necessary than the year before. The First Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards made its debut in 1995, honoring actress Mary Steenburgen and pioneering AIDS researcher Dr. Luc Montagnier … who returned to the gala in 2011 to receive the Lifetime Achievement in Medicine and Advocacy Award.

Just like Steve Chase, his namesake fundraiser gala keeps doing its work. They don’t plan to stop until the work is no longer necessary.

HOUSE GOP TO SUPREME COURT:

GAYS TOO POWERFUL TO WARRANT JUDICIAL PROTECTION

Republican members of the U.S. House leadership on Tuesday told the U.S. Supreme Court it should uphold the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) as constitutional, arguing that gays and lesbians are a powerful interest group, and do not warrant “judicial intervention.” In a 60-page brief filed Tuesday, Paul Clement — a former United States solicitor general and current partner at the Washington law firm Bancroft PLLC — now representing the GOP-led Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG) of the U.S. House, argued that the federal government has the same power as state governments do to define marriage. The brief asserts that DOMA does not attempt to exclude anyone from government benefits, and seeks only to define marriage for purposes of federal laws and programs. The brief also attacked the Obama administration’s February 2011 decision to stop defending the constitutionality of DOMA, and argued that gays and lesbians have not faced similar levels of discrimination as other minorities, and “demonstrates the remarkable political clout of the same-sex marriage movement.” “In short, gays and lesbians are one of the most influential, best-connected, best-funded, and best-organized interest groups in modern politics, and have attained more legislative victories, political power, and popular favor in less time than virtually any other group in American history. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15 “There is absolutely no reason to think that gays and lesbians are shut out of the political process to a degree that would justify judicial intervention on an issue as divisive and fast moving as samesex marriage.” The brief was filed in the federal challenge to DOMA, United States v. Windsor — the appellate to Windsor v. United States — in which Edith Windsor is challenging the federal government’s refusal to recognize her marriage to Thea Spyer when it comes to estate taxes on her deceased spouse’s estate. Last year, a federal judge in New York ruled that Section 3 of DOMA is unconstitutional and violates the Fifth Amendment. Section 3 defines marriage as “a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife” and spouse as “a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife,” thus providing unequal protection under the law.

PROTEST AGAINST RUSSIA’S PROPOSED ‘GAY PROPAGANDA’ LAW TURNS VIOLENT MOSCOW — Militant Orthodox activists on Tuesday attacked members of Russia’s embattled gay community protesting against a planned law banning “gay propaganda.” Russia’s Parliament is to consider a federal law that makes public events and dissemination of information on the LGBT community to minors punishable by fines of up to $16,000. Lawmakers, officials and Russia’s dominant Orthodox church have hailed the law, saying it will boost Russia’s dwindling birth rates. A dozen LGBT rights campaigners gathered Tuesday in front of the parliament building in Moscow to protest the law by kissing each other. But a similar number of young men interrupted the protest, assaulting the campaigners, taking away

and tearing down their posters and shouting obscenities at them. The bill is part of an effort to promote traditional Russian values as opposed to “Western liberalism,” and is similar to laws already on the books in St. Petersburg and a number of other Russian cities. The measure has been submitted to Russia’s lower house of parliament, which scheduled the the first of three hearings for today. Those behind the bill said minors need to be protected from “homosexual propaganda” because they are unable to evaluate the information critically. Russia decriminalized homosexuality in 1993, but homophobia remains strong.

Modernism Week is not all about houses but many events are either about the houses or take place inside or outside the houses built during the fifties or sixties. One company is becoming synonymous with making period house available to the public for event rental or private vacation rentals. That company is Beau Monde Villas and that person is owner Kevin Blessing. Beau Monde Villas provides exceptional villa rentals with luxurious amenities. When asked about what sets them apart from other companies Kevin said “Come stay with us. You will experience a pampered world similar to a five star hotel experience. We offer complimentary personal concierge-butler services in our very private luxury residences.” I wanted to know more about how that is made possible. Kevin responded, “When you arrive at your destination, Beau Monde Villa guests are greeted by a personal house butler who explains the home’s amenities. After that your guest services manager is just a phone call away during your stay. In addition to that you have a private concierge to answer any questions, and help arrange any relaxation plans like massage and spa service, coordinate a special meal with a personal chef, or anything else a Beau Monde Villa guest can imagine. One such famous mid-century home is the Sinatra House. It was originally designed by E. Stewart Williams in 1947 for Frank Sinatra and his first wife, Nancy Barbato. The Twin Palms Estate is a spectacular

example of mid-century architecture just south of downtown. This Palm Springs architectural gem features the famous piano-shaped swimming pool. The residence includes the original sound and recording system installed by Valentino Electronics of Hollywood and was used by Sinatra to cut records at his home. Another great home is the 1955 William Cody House which was designed in 1955 by renowned architect, William F. Cody, AIA, as commissioned by his steel magnate client, and is among an eclectic portfolio of homes from mid-century to Moroccan. William Cody designed a horizontal house with a flat roof line supported by steel beams against the mountain backdrop, using sandstone blocks and an exterior fascia of cedar accented with modern desert landscape. Sleek terrazzo flooring can be seen from the entryway throughout the great room and down the corridors. Cody insisted the joints and tall door-frames seemingly disappear into the walls surrounded with plenty of glass for natural lighting to create outdoor exposure while still indoors. These homes are prime examples of Mid-Century modern architecture at its finest. Visit their website for a full list of the luxury homes they have to offer. You won’t be disappointed. Every year, the late Chairman of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, Richard M. Milanovich, attended Native FilmFest. He was a true lover of films of all genres. It is most fitting that we honor him, with the good wishes of his family, by establishing the Richard M. Milanovich Award for Distinguished Contributions to Indigenous Film. Although not an annual award, the Museum will present the first Award to Native filmmaker Chris Eyre at the 2013 festival. Tickets to the festival will be affordably priced at $10 for Adults and $7 for Senior Adults (60+), Youth (16 and under), Students, and Active Military Personnel. All Access Passes are $70.

SEXBOTS ROBOTS ARE THE FUTURE OF SEX BY JINCEY LUMPKIN, ESQ.

What if you had a partner who was always hot and heavy? Someone with a bangin’ bod who knew exactly what you liked and how to give it to you? This is not impossible fluff from romance novels; it’s the future. In his book, The Age of Spiritual Machines, Ray Kurzweil explains his theory that the growth rate of technology is exponential, and we are beginning to reach the part of the exponential curve where the line shoots straight up and to the right. In other words, things that seem like nonsensical science fiction will start to become real. Recent films AI and I ROBOT dealt with artificially intelligent robots who became aware they had real feelings. AI even featured Jude Law as a sexy gigolo robot who drove his female clients wild with desire. Science is beginning to catch up to the movies. New developments in technology have led to artificial skin that feels exactly like human skin, robust verbal abilities in computers, and robots that look more and more like us. If the idea of humping a piece of metal does not get you going downstairs, not to worry. Scientists like Ray Kurzweil postulate that by 2029, robots will no longer just be “things”; they will begin to have real feelings and emotions. So-called sentient robots may challenge our basic notions of humanity. In his book, Love and Sex with Robots, David Levy writes how we have long used our immense psychological powers of projection to create relationships with inanimate objects. Growing up, did you have a favorite blanket or stuffed animal that you loved? How many times have you shouted at your computer when it freezes, as if it can hear you? This sort of emotional connection is exactly what will lead humans to being open to having sex and even relationships with robots in the next 16 to 35 years. Is this sounding like a more interesting proposition? Robot lovers will never get fat. They won’t leave the toilet seat up. You’ll never have to argue over who’s going to take out the trash. The website Transhumanity.net says, “Sexbots will electrocute our flesh because they’ll be more desirable, patient, eager, and altruistic, plus they’ll be uploaded with supreme sex-skills. They’ll offer quadruple-tongued cunnilingus, open-throat silky fellatio, deliriously gentle kissing, transcendent nipple tweaking, g-spot massage and prostate milking dexterity.” Sounds exciting. However, there are a few sticky issues about having a robot lover. First, is it healthy to be in a relationship with someone who gives you everything you want? There’s truth to the old adage, “Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.” On paper, a super

24 THESTANDARDPS.COM

eager, very skilled lover sounds amazing, but sometimes when you’re with someone who’s too nice, it can be off-putting. And where’s the challenge? Will easy access be a turn off? Furthermore, if you just pick the attributes of your partner to suit your needs and desires, aren’t you limiting your personal growth? Is it a good idea to be able to reset the programming when you don’t like your relationship? Lastly, would the robot really want to have sex with you, or would he/she simply be programmed to always say yes? In order to consent to sex, a person must be of sound mind and body, fully capable of understanding the consequences of their choice. That’s why it’s illegal to have sex with someone who’s passed out drunk. If a robot doesn’t have free will, the relationship can never be a two-way street. We know why we’d want to have sex with robots, but why would the robots want to have sex with us? Jincey Lumpkin, Esq. is the founder of JuicyPinkBox.com, a producer of luxury lesbian pornography. She’s often called “the lesbian Hugh Hefner” or “Carrie Bradshaw with an edge”. Lumpkin is a lesbian, married to a woman, and her unique path to becoming a porn director and her views on sex are chronicled in her monthly Huffington Post column.

THE REAL COST OF THAT ‘FREE APP’ JUST MIGHT BE YOUR PRIVACY (BPT) - The app world is booming and today there are more than 1 million mobile apps available for download through online stores run by companies like Apple and Google. Many apps are available free of charge and collect user data for advertising purposes, raising the question: What is the true cost of these “free” apps? “While there may be no monetary charge to download an app, it might mean you agree to let the app maker collect and use your personal information, like your email address, for marketing purposes,” says Chris Babel, CEO for TRUSTe, an online privacy solutions company. “Ideally, this data collection would be revealed in the app’s privacy policy, but many apps don’t have these policies. Even those that do have one often burry key disclosures and make them very difficult to find.” Smartphones today collect and store a wealth of personal information because they’re always “on,” and typically go wherever their users go. Consumers store extensive contact information, calendar data, and personal videos and photos on these devices. Modern smartphones may also contain GPS technology capable of collecting precise data about the phone’s movement and location in near real-time. “Personal data collection online has been happening for years on traditional PCs,” says Babel. “The difference today is that these ‘computers’ now sit in our pockets in the form of smartphones, and are capable of collecting more types of data, in greater quantities, than ever before. It’s a far more complex ecosystem and it can be difficult for consumers to understand what’s happening with their data. “ Unwelcome data collection on smartphones can lead to unwanted and intrusive advertising, and increase the risk of data breaches as companies build ever-larger databases of personal information profiling consumers. Before you click that next free download, TRUSTe recommends taking these steps to protect your privacy: LOOK FOR A PRIVACY POLICY In early 2012, the California Attorney General struck an agreement with all major app store operators stipulating that apps in their stores must contain privacy policies to comply with California law. A TRUSTe analysis of the top 50 Android and iOS mobile apps at the time, however, found only one in three had a privacy policy. Moreover, these apps that had policies typically did not optimize them for reading on smartphone’s smaller screens and lacked clarity over whether certain disclosures applied to the app or to the parent company’s website. A study conducted a few months later by the Future of Privacy Forum found improvement in the app marketplace, with 61 percent of top apps in the study featuring privacy policies. If you can’t find a

privacy policy for an app, or find one but can’t understand it, think twice about downloading that app. Look for apps that offer easy-to-find, easy-to-understand privacy policies. Mobile apps certified by TRUSTe (bearing TRUSTe’s green privacy seal of approval) will always have privacy policies in clear, easy to understand terms for smartphone users. SET APP AND SMARTPHONE PRIVACY SETTINGS Many apps contain privacy settings that can control behaviors like what information the app collects, how it interacts with other apps or a user’s contacts, and how it communicates with and alerts the app user about its background activity. In some cases, these settings may have their own section under a “privacy” tab within the app, but more often than not these privacy settings are found alongside standard settings within the app, like volume levels or sound effects. “We commissioned a Harris Interactive survey and found that nearly three quarters of the population worries about their privacy when using mobile apps,” says Babel. “App developers not only have a responsibility to provide consumers with mobile-appropriate privacy disclosures, but also meaningful choices about how their data is collected and used.” The settings tab of your smartphone operating system (like iOS for Apple devices) may also contain important privacy choices, allowing you to control the types of personal information that apps may collect from the device. Depending on your device, these settings may also provide you with granular privacy control over apps, preventing one app, for example, from collecting GPS data while allowing other apps to collect this data.

CONSIDERING AN EXPERIENCE GIFT? SOME HINTS FOR FINDING A WINNER

(BPT) - “Experience is one thing you can’t get for nothing,” Irish playwright Oscar Wilde once said. But Wilde, for all his wit, probably never envisioned the modern practice of giving an experience as a gift. This year give a present-you and your sweetheart will enjoy and talk about for years to come: a memory, an experience to remember, not just an ordinary gift soon to be forgotten. This year, give a ticket for a hot air balloon ride or a soaring glider ride that will surprise and elate your valentine. And, you and your sweetheart can take your ride almost anywhere in the country, near home, or at 200 locations nationwide. HOT AIR BALLOON RIDES The crew chief will meet your friends at the launch site, where they can watch the balloon being inflated. They ascend between 500 to 1,000 feet and float, with breathtaking views on every side, above the treetops and beneath the clouds, through valleys, winding rivers and lakes - wherever the wind goes. After landing, the adventure continues with a celebration toast of champagne or fruit, an old French tradition. Since each ride is led by a commercially certified, FAAtrained pilot, you can rest assured your loved ones will be secure and

safe. The balloon gondola holds up to six passengers. Your gift will provide an experience never to be forgotten. SOARING GLIDER RIDES Or, how about a thrilling gift for that hard-to-please special person? Send them soaring quietly and peacefully above the clouds in a silent glider that seats the pilot and one or two passengers. The soaring glider ride for two lets you and your loved one experience the ride together. And, on the ride for one, your pilot will let you take the controls to fly the glider if you wish. Forget about the boring gifts and choose an exciting adventure instead. Soaring Adventures of America, Inc., with more than 30 years of experience and a 100 percent safety record, offers gift tickets for Balloon, Glider and Skydiving rides you can use for up to two years at any of their 200 locations in the United States. MORE EXPERIENCES More exciting “experience gifts” for you to look for: White water rafting, cooking classes, spa days, helicopter rides, hang gliding, kayak lessons, bike tours, dance lessons, race car driving and flight lessons.

FITNESS MODERN OR FAD FROM THE PAST BY DENNIS MASON

What was once ‘Modern’ during the mid-20th century may be considered ‘retro’ by today’s perspective. But, what does that mean? Out of style? Out of date? Old fashioned? Well, it all depends on what we’re talking about. For example, if we are talking about ‘fashion’ perhaps out of style is the correct response. But, if we are discussing architecture, that’s a whole different thing. This time of year we celebrate Mid Century Modernism from buildings to furnishings created during the years beginning in the early 1950s through the latter part of the1960s. Interestingly, some amazing innovations were beginning to take hold in the world of health and fitness during the Mid Century period as well. Many have made it through the test of time, as with architecture, while some did not. Here are two such innovations that have

remained with us, here in the 21st Century. According to ThinkQuest Educational Foundation, “A fad that was very popular in the late 1950’s was the Hula Hoop. It is still around today, but has nowhere near the amount of popularity as it did when first invented. It started in 1957, when a visiting Australian mentioned to two young

At the time, their business of slingshots, boomerangs, and the like was running smoothly. As soon as they heard of this new “toy”, they began working on making a perfect hula hoop that would be easy to play with. Once they had the first prototype, they tested it on local playgrounds and found that it had the longest “play value” of any toy they had ever produced. Aerobics means with oxygen, and aerobic fitness consists of physical exercise, strength training and stretching. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends at least 30 minutes to 1 hour of moderately intense physical activity a day. Aerobic exercise has many other health benefits besides weight management. A lot of people think Jane Fonda launched the activity, but her first video was not released until 1982. It was Dr. Kenneth Cooper, a physician, who brought aerobic exercise to the forefront in the nineteen sixties when he noticed that people were not putting enough physical

Q&A JASON & deMARCO’S NEW NORMAL BY SEAN LARKIN Jason and deMarco met twelve years ago when Jason, a solo spiritual artist at the time, was visiting Los Angeles. Jason went to the restaurant where deMarco was the host. The two locked eyes and although it wasn’t love at first sight, deMarco thought Jason was cute and noticed the twinkle in Jason’s eye when he looked at deMarco. deMarco, however, was in a year-long relationship at the time with a girl. He soon realized that the feelings he was experiencing with Jason ran deeper than any he had felt towards the opposite sex. When he stopped caring what others would say, or how it would affect his career when they found out that he was gay, deMarco knew he was in love. The duo first recorded a Christmas album together in 2002. It was so successful they began recording more albums together; they have released six albums and several singles, two that climbed the Billboard charts. Logo even named their music video for This is Love “Video of the Year” in 2006. Jason & deMarco’s most recent album release is SAFE. They will perform many of the tracks from the album on their “Celebrating Families of Diversity” tour that kicks off in Houston and lands in Los Angeles at The NoHo Arts Center on Feb 12th. In the documentary film, We’re All Angels, your Pentacostal parents revealed they had a very hard time accepting your homosexuality. How did they accept your decision to create a family? JASON: My parents have been amazing. We couldn’t have done this without them. Shortly after the boys were born my parents relocated to Houston. They watch the boys on weekends that we travel and perform. deMARCO: Jason’s mom performing with us on stage will be a highlight of the show, I’m sure. What have you learned from your parents’ reaction to your homosexuality? JASON: I’ve learned that anything is possible. Sometimes I have to remind myself how far my parents have come and not take it for granted.

certain things for our kids. I’m sure if they chose a path I didn’t feel comfortable with, I’d have issues. We’re here to learn from one another and I think children and parents are perhaps one another’s greatest teachers.

Will you be more accepting of your children when they grow

Why did you decide to make Texas your home? deMARCO: While living in Los Angeles, we met a producer who lived in Houston. We were traveling back and forth so much to record that we decided to relocate for a year. That year stretched a bit longer.

deMARCO: My hope is that I will respect my children’s decisions and support them on their path of discovery. However, we all want

Q&A We met our surrogate in Houston. deMARCO: The only difficult part about Texas is that two men aren’t allowed to be listed as parents on the birth certificates. We had to have a second-parent adoption and adopt each other’s biological child. It would have been nice to both be on the birth certificates. Do you believe all gay men can create families? deMARCO: All gay men can create families; however, not all gay men should. Having a family is a huge responsibility and before anyone decides to have a child, I would encourage them to be sure they want it. You can never be ready, but it’s not a decision to be taken lightly. Was it expensive? deMARCO: Doing it the way we did it was quite expensive. The cost of harvesting and banking embryos cost around $20,000 (the donor is a close friend and didn’t ask for money). Our surrogate had 100% insurance coverage so we had no out-of-pocket expenses for her other than the clinic expenses to transfer the embryos. That ended up costing around $10,000. When it was all said and done, including all travel, legal, medical expenses, we probably spent close to $40,000. That’s not too bad. Surrogacy agencies charge anywhere from $50 - $100K, and it could go up to $150,000. JASON: Living as independent music artists, this wasn’t an option for us. Did you consider adopting? deMARCO: At the time, we didn’t realize fostering-to-adopt was an option. Fostering scared us because we feared falling in love with a child and then possibly having to return them to their biological parents. We have since learned that there are over thousands of children available for adoption in every state. The parental rights of these children have already been terminated. In addition, adoptees are actually paid by the states and children may qualify for benefits including a free college education and medical insurance. Even after adopting, parents still qualify for a monthly stipend when adopting a child out of the foster system. This is a great opportunity for same-sex couples and for anyone who doesn’t have the finances to do otherwise. If we have more children, this will be the route we take. What is the best thing about being a daddy? Jason: For me, it’s probably seeing the boys’ faces light up when I walk through the door. deMARCO: Getting to tickle them. What do the children call you? JASON: I’m Daddy and deMarco is Pappa.

Do you worry your children may face discrimination in school? JASON: I think every parent wishes they could keep their child in a safe bubble. We will definitely want to make sure there are other kids with same-sex parents attending our boys’ school. One lesbian couple told me that their 5-year-old thinks that some kids have two mommies, some two daddies and some a mommy and daddy. It’s just the way they think you are born. What is your goal with the “Celebrating Families of Diversity” tour? JASON: When coming up with the concept for this tour we really felt the timing was perfect. Prop 8 is going before the Supreme Court. President Obama has given his blessing on gay marriage. All of a sudden, the traditional family is the minority in our society. We now have inter-racial families, single parents, same-sex parents, divorced parents, co-parents… the list goes on and on. Why not celebrate the new normal? Your new album is called Safe. Is that a reflection of how you feel today? deMARCO: We feel more safe and secure now than ever. We have built a beautiful relationship, career and now family together, in spite of all odds. The album also ties in to your non-profit, S.A.F.E. JASON: S.A.F.E (Safe, Affirming, Family Environment) aims to support GLBTQ youth in foster care and connect them with affirming foster homes. We are also a resource to gay and lesbian individuals and couples who wish to learn about beginning the process of parenting. A portion of the proceeds from our ticketed events will go to support S.A.F.E. Will you perform “This Is Love”? deMARCO: “This is Love” is our biggest hit so we always try to include it. What’s your message to other gay men and women who might want to create families of their own? With love, commitment, intention, belief and action, anything is truly possible.

Jason and deMarco’s Celebrating Families in Diversity concert takes place Tuesday, February 12 at 7:00PM at The NoHo Arts Center (11136 Magnolia Boulevard, North Hollywood, CA 91601). Tickets are $20 advance/ $25 at door and can be purchased on-line at www.jasonanddemarco.com. All kids 17 and under are admitted free.
