PERSPECTIVE WHITE PARTY
RESPECTING AND CELEBRATING OUR DIVERSITY You couldn’t live in Palm Springs without noticing that there were certain times of the year when the city was completely over-run with men! The White Party is the preeminent annual event where you see a ton of handsome men with toned and tanned bodies; often walking hand in hand with what at times appears to be a clone. I was always fascinated by these sights but still I knew little about the event itself. It was my third year on council and my tenth year in the city and my sixth year in my first gay relationship. It was during a council meeting that then mayor (Will Kleindienst) made very strong comments about the White Party and the activities that took place there. Even though it was a gay event and I was gay I felt helpless to defend it because I had never attended and knew very little about it. What I did know was that the Hotel Association overwhelming supported the event because it brought in millions to our local economy. The mayor said that event should be cancelled because of the drugs and illicit sexual activity. I stated in that council meeting that I would meet with the event promoter, Jeffrey Sanker and that I would attend the event myself to see first hand what was going on. Jeffrey Sanker and I met with law enforcement and the fire department to make sure that all of our efforts were coordinated and that the concerns voiced in the council meeting were addressed. The concerns about drug overdoses were addressed and the sexual acting out all but disappeared. What I discovered when I attended the White Party was that it was just like going out any Saturday night to the local clubs only certain behaviors that you witnessed were simply multiplied by the number of people attending the event. Some people drink too much, some you figured were too animated to for alcohol while others were involved in high levels of PDA but the overwhelming number of attendees were just dancing and enjoying their friends. My observations made the opposition suspect to me. Why discuss cancelling an event that brought so much value to our community when the concerns were so easily addressed? One of the things that a lot of people don’t realize and it is the fact that most of the people who come that weekend may not attend any of the official White Party events. However these visitors sleep in our hotels, shop in our stores and eat in our restaurants and those activities bolster our local economy. It has become a time of celebration and reunion for members of the gay community for all over the world. There are a lot of people in the city who support the White Party but they don’t like the fact that if would fall on Easter Weekend. There have been concerted efforts to avoid Easter Weekend and starting next year the goal is to make White Party the fourth weekend in April to avoid most conflicts. White Party (like me) has come of age and will be 25 next year!! Plans are already under way for a huge celebration!!! Inclusiveness is the hallmark of who we are as a city and I believe that we will continue to live up to our history of respecting and celebrating our diversity. I am proud to be a citizen of such a progressive and dynamic city!

Said Sanker, “For each event I’ve tried to re-envision and re-imagine every element and detail, from the entertainment - to the music – to the most cutting edge sound and lighting, advanced special effects and full-surround LED video walls. White Party Fans are already buzzing about European powerhouse DJ Danny Verde, remix master for Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga, direct from Milan, bringing his beats to the desert for the first time ever at White Party. Also headlining at Saturday night’s main event, Grammy award-winning DJ/Producer Peter Rauhofer, known as one of club land’s most innovative and influential musical forces, will unleash a throbbing shockwave across WP’s jam-packed massive dance floor for a performance destined for the history books. Back by overwhelming demand, the imitable DJ Andy Almighty (7th Heaven), the musical mastermind who helped define the sound of gay dance music, returns to drench Sunday’s pool party with a tidal wave of epic anthems.

WHITE PARTY 2012 / photos by PHIL LOBEL Jeffrey Sanker, the “high priest of gay parties,” announced he will be crowning Miami Real Housewife Adriana De Moura as Queen of White Party 2013, anointing Amazing Race runner-up & Chippendales star Jaymes Vaughan as Official 2013 Ambassador and bestowing the title of Dame of White Party 2013 to the diva Madame. Together they will host and provide color commentary for the White Carpet VIP arrivals at White Party 2013 on Saturday night, March 30, at the Palm Springs Convention Center. “In keeping with our love affair with Bravo’s Real Housewives, we are thrilled to have Adriana De Moura as our 2013 Queen of White Party,” said Sanker. Also during the course of weekend events, De Moura will perform an extravagantly produced sexy samba version of her song, “Feel the Rush,” the theme from season two of The Real Housewives of Miami. “We are also very excited to have incredibly talented Jaymes Vaughan serving as our first-ever official White Party Ambassador,”
Sanker added. Vaughan is the runner-up in the hit CBS series The Amazing Race. He is also known world-wide as an out and proud member of the Chippendales at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Joining them on the White Carpet will be the world’s most infamous diva, Madame. The turbaned temptress of countless TV shows, from Laugh-In to Hollywood Squares, will bring her biting wit to White Party for the very first time – introducing a whole new generation of boys to her sassy (puppetry) style! And says Sanker,“I can’t wait to bestow unto her the title of ‘DAME!’” White Party 2013’s X-treme DJ line-up once again delivers a sizzling roster boasting what has been described as “a perfect blend of DJ circuit royalty and the best of the up and coming DJ’s of the world.” Every White Party event features full throttle sets from at least two world-class DJs, making each event its own landmark musical experience.

WP SCHEDULE FRIDAY SPLASH POOL PARTY: DJ RYAN KENNEY White Party Weekend begins Friday, poolside, with Los Angelesbased DJ Ryan Kenney. After spinning for such high-profile clients as Elton John & David Furnish, David Geffen, Joel McHale, Perez Hilton, Lance Bass, and hundreds of club goers around the world, Kenney finally brings his fresh style of music to the desert, setting the stage for what promises to be a weekend of fun, sun, and energy. FRIDAY BULGE UNDERWEAR PARTY: DJS DAVE & GERARDO, DANI TORO At Friday’s Bulge Underwear party, size will most definitely matter. In fact, this party is expected to be so big that three DJs are required. First up, from New York is the DJ team of Dave & Gerardo, also known as D&G. A team in every sense of the word, these talented and sexy guys are not just DJs and producers – they are also lovers. Also lined up is DJ Dani Toro. A talented DJ and producer based in Barcelona, Spain. Toro promises to spice things up with his special blend of Tribal, Progressive, and mainstream House. With three smokin’ DJs spinning for a sea of sexy men, this is one party not to be missed. SATURDAY SPLASH POOL PARTY: DJS PORNSTAR & GRIND From West Hollywood, DJ Pornstar is set to work the masses into a sweat during Saturday’s Splash Pool Party at the Renaissance. Noize magazine ranked DJ Pornstar as one of the top 5 sexiest American DJs in 2012. After a quick Google image search, you will see why. Joining Pornstar will be up-and-coming circuit DJ Grind from San Francisco. DJ Grind has headlined some of the biggest circuit events across the country – including White Party Palm Springs – with his super sexy beats. Get those speedos ready! SATURDAY WHITE PARTY XTREME: SEAN O’GRADY, DANNY VERDE, AND PETER RAUHOFER. DJ Sean O’Grady will kick off Saturday’s main event. Originally from Wyoming, O’Grady got his start as a go-go dancer, but his passion for Dance music eventually drew him to the DJ booth. O’Grady’s highenergy sets make him the perfect DJ to usher in the night. Following O’Grady, superstar DJ Danny Verde will command the decks and no doubt lead the crowd into that magical White Party journey that has become legendary. As a DJ, songwriter, producer, and vocalist, Verde is the whole package and he is sure to deliver. Following Verde, another superstar DJ, Peter Rauhofer, promises to lead the crowd to the next level. A Grammy-winning producer, Rauhofer has produced hits for the biggest names in Dance music. If you go to only one party this weekend – this is the one! SATURDAY SMARTWATER OUTDOOR LOUNGE: LEONARDO GLOVIBES DJ/producer Leonardo GloVibes will perform at the SmartWater Outdoor Lounge. GloVibes was raised in Italy, but now lives in London and

performs regularly at local mega clubs like Ministry of Sound, The Egg, AkA, Fire, A:M, Area, Heaven, and Barcode. CLIMAX AFTERPARTY: DJS PAULO & JACKINKSKY For those who don’t want the party to end, DJs Paulo & Jackinksky will be there to keep it going at the Climax Afterparty. With the intent of creating a fresh sound for the club and circuit scene, Los Angeles-based DJ Paulo and Montreal-based Alain Jackinsky have decided to join forces. As individuals, each of these DJs possesses a unique sound. But bring these two musical powerhouses together and the result is pure magic. Expect the magic at this party to last until sunrise. SUNDAY POOL PARTY: DJ ANDY ALMIGHTY & CASEY ALVA For those wanting to recover poolside on Sunday, DJs Andy Almighty and DJ Casey Alva will be on hand to provide the Sunday soundtrack. Almighty is a mainstay of the gay clubbing scene in London, having graced the decks at the area’s legendary clubs like Love Muscle, Anthem at Crash, XXL/Fusion at the Arches, DNA at Fire, Loverboy at The Coliseum, G-A-Y at the Astoria, and Heaven. Here in the States, he is best known for his hugely popular remix productions. Casey Alva is a Billboard-reporting DJ and producer from West Hollywood. With long established residencies at Here Lounge and San Diego’s Montage nightclub, Alva knows how to keep the groove alive. SUNDAY T-DANCE: DJS MANNY LEHMAN & WAYNE G Besides Saturday night’s White Party, the Sunday T-Dance is probably one of the most anticipated and talked-about parties of the entire weekend. The vibe at T-Dance has traditionally focused on fun and dancing and with a DJ duo like Manny Lehman and Wayne G set to perform, that tradition is likely to continue. Lehman is one of the most well-known, and liked, DJ/producers on the circuit. His success goes back to the 1990s, when he helped launch the career of Cece Peniston. Wayne G is another long-time circuit DJ and producer whose credits include remixes for Cher, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry, Scissor Sisters, Deborah Cox, Whitney Houston, and many more. SUNDAY CLOSING PARTY: TONY MORAN & ROSABEL How else to close a massive weekend like White Party Palm Springs than with three powerhouse DJs? Sunday’s closing party will feature veteran circuit DJs Tony Moran and Rosabel. Moran’s classic beats have resonated throughout clubs and arenas around the world, and have dominated the Billboard dance charts for decades. DJ Abel and Ralphi Rosario – collectively known as Rosabel – are instantly recognizable for their uplifting anthems. The duo has hit number one on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart five times, most notably with their mega-hit with Jeanie Tracy, “Cha Cha Heels.” For the latest information on event schedules, DJs, performers and to purchase passes, accommodations and book travel visit: WWW.JEFFREYSANKER.COM.

Q&A CATCHING UP WITH WHITE PARTY’S FIRST EVER AMBASSADOR
Jaymes Vaughan BY JASON KELLY
You’ve seen him bumping and grinding on stage as part of the world-famous Chippendales dance troupe. He made it all the way to the finals last season as runner up on CBS-TV’s “Amazing Race.” More recently, he launched a campaign to help fund his own father’s fight against cancer. Now Jaymes Vaughan will serve as the first ever White Party Ambassador for Uber-party producer Jeffrey Sanker’s annual desert extravaganza, White Party Palms Springs, California March 31-April 1. For more information, visit: www.jeffreysanker.com We were able to catch up with the booty-shaking, globetrotting, philanthropist to find out a little bit more about what makes him one of the hottest out and proud stars on the scene today. Here’s what he had to say….
12 THESTANDARDPS.COM
Your moves seem so effortless on stage, but what’s the most difficult part of being a Chippendales dancer? Well I’m the host and singer of the show so unfortunately my “moves” aren’t what I’m known for (I’m so not sexy). Yes there’s a singer in Chippendales. I know it takes a second to adjust to the fact that it’s not the same show it was back in the 80’s with guys in leopard print thongs greased up workin’ a stripper pole, but it’s actually a full-scale multi-million dollar production show with a singer, rapper, musicians, and of course those world famous Chippendales. So don’t worry, you still see skin. Just in a different much, much better way. As far as the hardest part of being a Chippendale...without a doubt that is having to look like a Chippendale. I grew up mad dorky with everything a teenage kid doesn’t want against them. Bad teeth, bad hair, bad skin, and was about 140lbs soaking wet (at 6’4”). So having to fight that off, when that’s still the kid I see in the mirror every
Q&A day is definitely the hardest part... Yup, hardest part of being a Chippendale...having to look like the photo -shopped version of me. That damn guy.
I can’t dress myself...at all. So I’m open to suggestions. Maybe I’ll just find a white bow tie since that’s what I’m used to wearing to work at Chippendales.
What advice would you give other gay men or lesbians hoping to compete on “The Amazing Race?” A race around the world is not about your sexuality. So don’t stress that element. Its 2013, be yourself and go kick ass. I went on the race with my best friend who has a girlfriend. I on the other hand, have a boyfriend. And that difference plays ZERO in your ability to race well. We both were just as good, and unfortunately at times just as bad at is as one another. The only thing you really need to know is to fully love yourself and who you are, so you can be yourself without any reservation. Because that is when you be able to be your best and compete your best.
Do you run your own twitter account? Will you be tweeting LIVE from White Party? (Here is a chance to shamelessly plug all your social media!) Of course I run all my own social media. I ain’t cool enough to have somebody do that for me. I’ll definitely be keeping everyone posted who isn’t there, but then again, why would anyone not be there?! So follow me! Twitter: @JaymesV Facebook.com/JaymesVaughan
What was your reaction when Jeffrey Sanker asked you to be his “White Party Ambassador?” Holy Crap, Jeffrey Sanker knows who I am? THE Jeffrey Sanker? Pretty sure I said “yes” before he even finished asking the question. Are you a White Party virgin? I have never been to White Party before. So I have absolutely no idea what I am getting myself into...but I’m really excited about it! Are you looking forward to working with your White Carpet co-host, Adriana de Moura (Real Housewives of Miami) & “MADAME? We hear they are BOTH VERY excited to meet you! Wait, they know who I am too? That’s probably the coolest part. That Adriana who has millions of fans and is on TV every week and Madame who was hugely iconic in her own time knows who I am and wants to meet me? I still am definitely not used to this 10 million people a week watched me on TV thing...so having anyone at all know who I am is beyond flattering and so damn cool. People come up to me at Burger King and are like “I’m sorry can I take a picture with you?” and I’m like “Are you kidding me? Don’t apologize, this is so cool!” I kinda feel like a Kardashian. How long will you be staying White Party weekend? Will you be enjoying all that Palm Springs has to offer? I’ve never been to Palm Springs or White Party so of course I want to check it all out!
Will your White Party white carpet outfit be as revealing as what you wear on stage?
What are you most looking forward to at this year’s White Party Palm Springs? The energy - I hear from friends who have performed at White Party in the past that the best part about it is the atmosphere. Everyone is there to have a great time...and this guy loves to have a great time. How is your Dad doing? How is his cancer treatment going? Thanks for asking. It means so much knowing our community has his back, and I think those positive energy and prayers really do help. Dad’s a fighter. That’s the best answer I can ever give anyone. Because it’s a down day in and day out fight. But that’s what my Dad does best, FIGHT. And he has such an amazing attitude about it. He’s still fighting, so we are still fighting doing everything we can to help emotionally and financially through forgetcancernow.com because after all that’s the whole reason James and I even went on The Amazing Race. To help my Dad. And that’s what we are gonna do. What’s next for Jaymes Vaughan? My new single “Tonight” comes out in February and I’m pretty stoked about that because music is and always will be my number one passion. But amazing, amazing things have come our way since the race ended and I’m so blessed and grateful to have them. James and I’s own show will hopefully be on your TV screens by the Fall Season as well. It’s called “What the Hell do we do here?” and from the episodes we’ve already shot I can tell you it’s a lot of fun.at least to make it. Hopefully it’s just as fun for y’all to watch. . And finally, what all of our readers will want to know if they meet you White Party Weekend - are you single or taken? I truly believe there is someone for everyone and I waited a long time to be able to say this but I’m 100% without a doubt head over heels fairy tale kind of love, taken. I’m a very, very lucky guy.

The brief drew 278 signers, including more than 200 companies, many of whom also signed on to a brief announced yesterday asking the court to strike down California’s Proposition 8 and similar state bans on same-sex marriage. The companies said that DOMA “forces us to treat one class of our lawfully married employees differently than another, when our success depends upon the welfare and morale of all employees.” Our principles are not platitudes. CHRISTIAN ACTIVISTS: LONDON MAYOR’S BAN ON ‘EX-GAY’ ADS STIFLING FREE SPEECH
LONDON — A Christian group that promotes ex-gay therapy took the Mayor of London to court last week, alleging he violated their right to free speech when he banned their billboards from London buses and in the city’s transportation hubs. The advertisements by the group Core Issues Trust, which claimed that gays could be “reoriented” through prayer and therapy, were banned by Mayor Boris Johnson in April 2012. Johnson called the group’s message “clearly offensive to suggest that being gay is an illness that someone recovers from.” The ads read, “Not Gay! Ex-Gay, Post-Gay and Proud. Get over it!” and were in response to an earlier campaign by Stonewall UK, Britain’s leading LGBT advocacy group, which read, “Some people are gay. Get over it!”
Dr. Mike Davidson, founder of Core Issues Trust, who had his membership in British Psychodrama Association (BPA) revoked over his support for the controversial therapy, told the British press that his supporters will go to London’s High Court to claim that the mayor’s ban of their campaign should be reversed on the grounds that he unlawfully stifled free speech. Among his responsibilities as mayor, Johnson oversees Transport for London, which is responsible for approving advertising on buses in the city. Davidson argues that since other advertising campaigns — including Stonewall’s, and campaigns featuring underwear models — have been allowed by Transport for London, including a 2009 British Humanist Association ad, which some Christians found offensive. The ad read: “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying. And enjoy your life.” “This is all about being free to talk about these issues,” said Davidson, who claims has had a homosexual past, but now claims gays can become heterosexual through counseling and prayer. Andrea Williams, director of the Christian Legal Centre, which is supporting Davidson’s case, said the ban on Core Issues’ ads was “the beginning of a kind of reverse discrimination which threatens to obliterate debate in the public sphere.” A spokesman for Transport of London told The Telegraph that “the advertisement breached TFL’s advertising policy as in our view it contained a publicly controversial message and was likely to cause widespread offense to members of the public.”

HOW MEN CAN AVOID FIVE COMMON SKINCARE PITFALLS
Dermatologist offers skincare advice to help save guys from irritation and discomfort
TIPS
Before shaving, try using steam or hot water to help open pores. If you want to keep the skin around your eyes looking younger, get used to wearing your shades in all seasons - squinting is not a good look anyway.
(BPT) - Let’s face it, skincare isn’t always a priority for most guys. However, the path to healthy, comfortable skin is not as difficult as one might think. For men with skin issues, relief is only a few simple steps away. San Diego-based dermatologist Dr. Jeffrey Benabio lists five common skincare pitfalls guys face and how each can be easily avoided. 1. USING THE WRONG STICK Half of men experience some form of underarm discomfort or itching and believe this is the price they have to pay for using a powerful deodorant. Those experiencing underarm irritation should try an antiperspirant or deodorant that is specifically formulated to be nonirritating just like Dove (R) Men+Care (R) Aqua Impact Antiperspirant

and Deodorant. Designed to be tough on sweat, not on skin, DoveMen+Care-helps combat dryness while providing advanced 48-hour protection against odor and wetness. 2. WEARING INAPPROPRIATE WORKOUT CLOTHES While long workouts are great for your body, they can be tough on your skin if you’re wearing clothes that absorb moisture. Change into clothes that wick sweat away so you can avoid the excess moisture, which allows bacteria to thrive and can cause skin problems. 3. FORGETTING ABOUT THE SOAP Guys don’t usually spend a lot of time in drug store aisles, and

TRENDS Wash, which is clinically proven to fight skin dryness with less irritation or tightness than soap. 4. SHAVING MISTAKES Before shaving, try using steam or hot water to help open pores. Also, while there’s nothing wrong with keeping your facial hair under control and maintaining a clean-shaven look, it’s not a bad idea to let your facial hair grow occasionally. This break can help unclog your pores and reduce ingrown hairs. 5. FORGETTING THE SHADES Next time you run out of the house without your sunglasses, think again. One of the leading causes of wrinkles around eyes, or crow’s feet, at an early age is sun damage. If you want to keep the skin around your eyes looking younger, get used to wearing your shades in all seasons squinting is not a good look anyway.
they often get whatever soap they’ve been using for years or go with whatever is cheapest. Little do they know that those soaps are often too harsh and strip their skin of essential oils. Next time, grab an allin-one solution like Dove Men+Care Clean Defense Body and Face
While it can simply take a small lifestyle change to solve recurring skin problems, it’s important to see a dermatologist if problems persist. For more skincare tips and products that can help, visit www.dovemencare.com.

SMALL BUSINESSES ACCELERATING GROWTH IN 2013 WITH CLOUD COMPUTING Kevin Lisota, CEO and co-founder of findwell, a real estate startup in Seattle, makes comprehensive use of Microsoft Exchange Online for its shared calendars, support for multiple email boxes and mobile messaging. “Our agents need to be able to send and receive email on all sorts of devices from anywhere they happen to be,” Lisota says. “The sync capabilities of Exchange Online mean that I can easily enable my employees to get email on all their phones and computers from any Web browser.”
(BPT) - Small businesses seem optimistic about increasing sales and hiring in 2013 and are looking to squeeze more productivity out of limited time, staffing and resources. For these reasons, finding the right business tools that can grow with you but also work well with the tools you already use are essential to helping your business focus on what you do best - serving your customers. Having the right tools - such as business-class email, online meetings, remote access to documents, shared calendars and shared contacts - to create, collaborate, connect and help manage day-today tasks can help cut costs and increase productivity. Naturally Me, a small company in Durham, N.C., that makes natural beauty products, uses Microsoft Office 365 to hold regularWeb conferences. “I downloaded the trial version and fell in love,” says Chaundra Smith, founder of Naturally Me. “I had no hesitations moving Naturally Me to the cloud because it’s from Microsoft, so it felt safe and secure.” The company also collaborates on documents by using Microsoft SharePoint Online, and sales consultants use it to support their sales efforts. “They don’t have to print out paper catalogs anymore. Instead, they bring a portable computer and use SharePoint Online to present our products to party guests.”

Imagination Yoga, a small, family-owned business in Portland, Ore., teaches a “kindness-based” curriculum instructing children on yoga concepts and storytelling to spark their creativity and get them exercising. “Like most small businesses, we thought that the tools available with a service like Office 365 would be outrageously expensive and impossible for us to attain on our own,” says Jon Hopkins, co-founder of Imagination Yoga. “But that’s definitely not the case with Office 365, which makes everything easy to set up and use at an affordable price.” Having the right tools to improve communication and collaboration can make even the most challenging things, such as increasing that bottom line, seem more manageable. A cloudpowered small business is more nimble and prepares you to adapt to changing business needs - now and in the future. To help get your business on track for 2013, 90-day free trials of Office 365 are available through the end of February.

STILL TEXTING WHILE DRIVING? QUITTING MIGHT BE EASIER THAN YOU THINK
(BPT) - Most Americans know texting and driving is dangerous but it continues to be a problem, especially for young drivers. While 97 percent of teens agree that texting and driving is dangerous, 43 percent still admitted to continuing to do it, according to a recent survey. The 2012 AT&T survey of teen drivers also found 75 percent of teens say texting while driving is common among their friends and the majority of respondents said they have texted when stopped at a red light and often glance at their phones while driving. While teens might be the worst offenders when it comes to texting and driving, plenty of adults are guilty too. As the evidence continues to mount concerning the dangers of texting while driving, 39 states have made it illegal. Whether it’s legal or not in your state, here are three good reasons to quit once and for all: * Texting drivers are 23 times more likely to be in an accident, according to Virginia Tech Transportation Institute research.
simple touch. These small tags can be put on a dashboard or a set of car keys and allow you to change your phone’s settings for driving by simply touching your NFC-enabled smartphone to the tag. Smartphone applications can make this process even easier. When paired with AT&T’s free Drive Mode app, you can automatically disable your phone’s texting and calling capability. The app can also be programmed to include an automatic message that’s sent to anyone who texts you while you’re behind the wheel, letting that person know that you’ll respond when you are finished driving. You can program this app to run when you tap your phone to your SmartTag, while also setting your phone up to automatically run GPS programs and engage your car’s Bluetooth system for both safety and convenience. While messages from your friends and family are important, nothing should take precedence over safely getting yourself and your passengers to your destination. To help make your driving experience safer, outfit your car with tools such as SmartTags, which you can learn more about at www.sonymobile.com, and don’t forget to take the pledge to never text and drive again at www.itcanwait.com.

Distracted driving is a factor in 15 to 25 percent of all crashes, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association. * Each day, an average of more than 15 people are killed in crashes that result from distracted driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. HOW TO STOP TEXTING WHILE DRIVING To help people break the perilous habit of texting and driving, technology companies are coming up with unique and practical solutions for drivers. LONG TIME AGO WHEN

When you turn the last page of a book you loved very much, what else is there to do? 3 things: mourn and cry desperately, knowing that it’s going to take you weeks, even months before you find another interesting one; which is usually the case with me. Maybe you run to the closest library and histerically continue the search for a new book that can replace it. Finally you give up and wait until the last hint of orgiastic thrill from that book you just finished runs through your spine and is completely gone. In the meantime you take cold showers to refrain from hurting yourself. Closing a book can be compared to the end of an era: Maybe the new one that is coming is going to be better than the one just passed or maybe not! Such is the case of Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball. Forget about the location: the Ballroom at the Plaza in New York City, forget about the years: the 60’s.

Do you remember, when mom used to read you a page from your favorite fairy tale everynight, so you would go to sleep? Well, this was a fairy tale for grown ups, for those like me, who weren’t actually there to experience that night, for those who still believe in the power of magic and evocation. In the past, only the rich and powerful people dressed in white, because the color indicated the status of a person: if you dress in white it means you don’t have to work, you don’t have to get involved in dirty jobs, manipulate things, adjust greasy stuff. Since that moment, white took its distance from black. Black and white are part of the same scheme. Black will always be a passe par tout non color, the easy way to pull off a night out, the impersonal color that blocks all feeling and cuts transmission of emotion. White became a muse color for the fashion establishment. Bianca Jagger loved white; she married Mick in a YSL white

Loulou de la Falaise married Thade’ Kosslowsky in white and red, in a ceremony that preceded a beautiful party organized “par Yves et Pierre’”. where white orchids were placed everywhere. The Black and White Ball needs a whole page to be described. This event was about the opening of an era that will lead directly to the Studio 54 era, where in most cases, we can find most of the people who populated all those previous historical parties. And then, we give way to what we have currently: the White Party. There’s really nothing to say about it other than every year, here in Palm Springs, a different singer with an unmentional name and a poor repertoir (unless we are talking about Our Lady Cher) performs for a group of men who,the next morning, usually won’t remember the night before. That’s the cold truth about it...magic and class come in totally different shape and that’s a whole different story.

FITNESS LOOK YOUR BEST FOR YOUR NEXT EVENT BY DENNIS MASON, C.P.T.
No matter what event you plan to be part of this year, you need to prepare in advance in order to look your best. It doesn’t matter if you are planning a cruise, an audition, a competition, a photo shoot or a White Party event. Of particular interest is your physique. Do you need to drop a few pounds of body fat, add a few pounds of muscle or just refine and define what you already have? No matter what the case or the event, there are some helpful tips you can use that most physique competition athletes as well as fitness models use for just such times in their careers. First of all, start your body shaping program well in advance of your event. It’s not uncommon to start the process 8 to 12 weeks out from the event. In some instances the more work there is to do, the farther out you must begin. Your body doesn’t like to change things in a hurry. So, work WITH your body, not against it. Next you must visualize how you wish to appear. Do you want to be lean and ripped, full and muscular, or whatever strikes your desire. It’s all up to you. YOU are the ‘artist’ and YOU are the ‘canvas’. It is most important for you to hold onto this visualization all the way up to and through the event. With the correct application of work, your body will follow through to develop the image you visualize. Now the ‘work phase’ begins. For most of us, hitting the gym on a regular basis is the most convenient method to make a change in our physique. Adjust your workout program to lead you to the results you have visualized and STICK WITH IT. Excuses will not work to your benefit. Along with the ‘work phase’ you must pay special attention to your dietary intake. This is even more important than the workout program. See, about 30% of your finished project will be due to the actual workout routine, while 70% will come via correct nutritional planning. The reason most people don’t see the results they want is that they have the two percentage numbers backwards. Ask any fitness model or competitor and you will get the same answer. So, listen up and structure your plan of action by using the correct strategy. As the event nears, shift your workout program to one that eases off on the resistance (poundage) and increases the number of repetitions. This will allow more blood flow into the muscles to increase the ‘pump’ or fullness of the muscles. It will also increase the vascularity of your blood vessels to give you that lean and toned physique appearance. Finally, re-adjust your dietary plan to cycle down your carbohydrate intake over a few days, followed by an increase in carbs over the next few days. This method is called ‘carbo-depletion/carbo-loading’. It is
28 THESTANDARDPS.COM
designed to clear the body of excess body fat and fluid, then flood the body back to ‘fill out’ the muscles and make them look ‘full’ instead of ‘flat’. You will wind up with a full yet totally ripped physique. Try to time this method to coincide with your event time for best results. Got questions or need help? Contact me from the info below. We’re talking White Party Weekend; try thick, white, creamy, sticky, and sweet, hot…oh now I have your attention. TOTALLY LAUGHABLE!
HOLLYWOOD OR LUST AN IRREGULAR, MONTHLY COLUMN BY COMEDIAN SHANN CARR Hollywood or Lust is a salacious Palm Springs “tell-all” and I mean that in the nicest way! Author Robert Julian says “I couldn’t not tell!” After his last book, Postcards from Palm Springs flared the ankles of some of the most brightly colored Capri-pants in town; you’d think he’d shy away from baring his neighbor’s secrets. But, for a selfproclaimed Mensa member he’s not “that” kind of smart. “I know the California statutes on defamation, start to finish, line by line,” he said. And he’d better, because he names names in local politics, the police department, social circles and in his own Warm Sands neighborhood association. With all the judgmental snarkyness of an adult, gay man who suffered a lifetime of bullying and won’t stand another moment of oppression, he lets unabridged cattiness fly on the wings of his own vanity, and he tells. I do speak that language, that specifically middle-aged gay male voice, so I really enjoyed the read. It’s like the fey love child of the local police blotter and Craigslist’s “Rants and Raves” without the raves. That is, if that love child was conceived by two men in the bushes outside a Warm Sands neighborhood resort. This book follows two threads as they backstitch through the fabric of Julian’s life. The dark thread shines a light on a seemingly homophobic Police Chief who planned a sex sting in the gay resort area of Palm Springs. A sting the police seemed bent on making sure would bring life-long, sex-offender penalties to anyone who made advances to the police decoys. The shiny thread illuminates the dark side of Hollywood’s predictable “Come here-go away” treatment of Robert’s desire to bring his first book to the small screen. That, coupled with his somewhat more successful desire to bring himself, as an actor, to a stage or screen somewhere, anywhere. While interviewing him on my patio, I could see Robert’s roots as a newspaper man on the front lines, writing for the San Francisco Sentinel about the early AIDS crisis. He learned to speak truth to power. He followed the story of this sex sting because he wanted to see justice done for the men who were being unjustly persecuted. It is clear that he doesn’t want public sex on the sidewalks of his own neighborhood, but overt homophobia and exaggerated sentencing was a nightmare story Julian felt had to be told. Robert remembers seeing his mother, a union organizer in Detroit, throw salt at the scabs who crossed her picket line. His father, a Detroit factory worker, made his family’s extra money by loan-sharking. As an only child, Robert had no trouble finding strong role models with the balls to step up and speak out… and that was just the balls his Mom had! Robert Julian is like so many of my gay male friends and their mothers; He believes that he’s more fit, more insightful, better dressed,
wittier and smarter than the people around him. With that sense-ofself in his pocket, Julian “reads” every single character’s mental acuity, accountability and most importantly what they’re wearing… badly. I adore the admittedly stereotypical recounts of the time he spends in the gym, and laughed out loud when he went into a bit about an injury caused by years of high impact aerobics. I could picture the leotard (he never mentioned) immediately. Hollywood or Lust is all the things that gay men are famous for, or embarrassed by depending who you ask. If you ask me, I had fun with it. I zoomed through it at light speed, and then passed it on to a friend who lives in Warm Sands. Soon, I’m sure he’ll pass it on to another friend with the same hushed, gossipy, excitement! Hushed gossip is the most effective PR Palm Springs has ever seen! P.S. Look for Robert Julian in the Canadian reality series Golden Gays which filmed here in PS and will premiere soon.

The six years previous to that, they sold their clothes and accessories at Bear events across the nation and also at many city Pride events. Much of their merchandise has well known embroidery logos they designed. These designs have been very well accepted across the United States and abroad. We decided it would be perfect for a year round store. Do you still do festivals if so which ones? DON: Along with our business location we sell at a few resorts in Palm Springs. We have sold at the leather events and nude events but we stopped doing pride events when we moved here. We needed a little bit less travel. For my readers, Do you recommend festivals as a way to get into the retail business and why or why not. RICK: Back when we started doing the festivals we would of said yes, but after 911 we were unable to fly our merchandise to the events. It may be a little better now, but it is difficult and expensive unless you ship.
Q: Where and when did you first start doing festivals and fairs? DON: We started doing festivals and fairs in 1996 the first one being a bear event in Dallas (Texas Bear Roundup). We then spread out doing prides, rodeos and bear events in many cities in the United States.
What is next for Bear Wear Palm Springs? DON: We will definitely continue having our retail store in operation as long as the economy increases business each year.
Q: How many did you do each year? RICK: We did a lot‌anywhere from 12 to 26 events a year.
Bear Wear Etc. is located at 319 E. Arenas Road, Palm Springs, CA 92262 and their website is WWW.BEAR-WEAR.COM
Q: What was the turning point that made you decide you needed to go to a retail location? And why Palm Springs? RICK: Well, we moved to Palm Springs in 2002 because we liked

EVENTS CALENDAR NAKED BOYS SINGING! THE INTERNATIONAL SENSATION CELEBRATES 13TH ANNIVERSARY WITH PALM SPRINGS DEBUT AT PALM CANYON THEATRE MARCH 26 -31 “The three greatest words in the English language – Naked Boys Singing!” - Kelly Ripa, “Live With Regis & Kelly”
NAKED BOYS SINGING! the fifteen-song celebration of the male form will soon hit yet another milestone: the show will make its long awaited debut in PALM SPRINGS, CA for a 6 performance limited engagement. NAKED BOYS SINGING! Takes center stage at the PALM CANYON THEATRE, Tuesday, March 26 through Sunday, March 31, 2013. Curtain is set for 8:00 P.M. An equally strong draw for the LGBT community as well as alternative theatre buffs, NAKED BOYS SINGING! originated in Los Angeles/West Hollywood in early 1999. Soon after, it became a New York City mainstay, opening at The Actor’s Playhouse in July 1999 and settling into a 12 year run, notching up over 3,000 performances and making it the second-longest running musical in Off Broadway history behind THE FANTASTICKS. The Boys have enjoyed annual summer engagements in Provincetown, MA as well as recently marking a year run in Las Vegas. The show went international with successful, long standing runs in London’s West End, Melbourne, Australia’s Gasworks Theatre with upcoming editions planned for New Zealand and South Korea. NAKED BOYS SINGING! is directed and conceived by Robert
Schrock and choreographed by Jeffry Denman. Schrock and a team of 12 writers -- Stephen Bates, Marie Cain, Perry Hart, Shelly Markham, Jim Morgan, David Pevsner, Rayme Sciaroni, Mark Savage, Ben Schaechter, Trance Thompson, Mark Winkler and two-time Emmy Award winning Bruce Vilanch -- created a bouncy (pun intended) and fabulous musical revue that reminds us that clothes alone do not make the man. The film version was released in 2008 by TLA Releasing and remains one of their top sellers on DVD. REACTION PRODUCTIONS, a Los Angeles based production entity with regional offices in Palm Springs is presenting NAKED BOYS SINGING! direct from it’s New York engagement. The PALM CANYON THEATRE is located at 538 North Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs. The show runs at a lean, tight 70 minutes without an intermission. Tickets are $50 for VIP Limited Seating and $35 Reserved Seating. For additional show information and ticket purchases, please contact Palm Canyon Theatre Box Office at (760) 323-5123 www.palmcanyontheatre.org. Also, for more info visit www.NakedBoysSinging.com
