PROPOSITION LOVE JEWELRY SHARE LOVE THIS HOLIDAY
Proposition Love Jewelry celebrates OUR love. Born out of inspiration, purpose, and love; Sam Street and Jonathan Tack, who were married on October 30, 2008 in San Francisco, founded the company. A few days after their wedding Proposition 8 passed and overturned the California Supreme Court’s decision to allow gay marriage. On June 24, 2011, same-sex marriage became legal in New York. This historic moment inspired us to become an active part of the marriage equality / gay rights movement by partnering with a top jewelry designer to develop a fine jewelry collection including wedding bands and gay pride rings. We have incorporated a triangle into all our designs as a symbol of the gay rights movement throughout history. We also design fashion rings, EnGAYgement Rings™, pendants and bracelets that give supporters for the cause an opportunity to wear a Prop Love piece proudly. Proposition Love Jewelry proudly donates 10 % of its company’s profits to organizations that support Marriage Equality, Gay Rights, LGBT Youth and Anti Bullying, and HIV / AIDS activism. Jewelry from Proposition Love is a symbol of your LOVE and COMMITMENT to each other and a pledge to support the RIGHTS of ALL. We have incorporated a triangle into our designs as an ongoing symbol of the gay rights movement throughout history. Originally the pink triangle was used during World War II to label and persecute homosexuals. At the end of the 1970 ‘s the pink triangle was adopted by Gay Activists as a symbol for gay rights and continues to be our symbol to this day. With 32 states now recognizing Marriage Equality, and courts overturning discriminatory laws almost monthly, this year’s Holiday
Season will be especially joyous as history proves again that “love conquers all.” The designers at Proposition Love Jewelry offer gifts you will be proud to give LGBT couples, friends and community allies on your gift list. Countdown Collection – Honoring states that have passed marriage equality, our Countdown Collection honors the states that have become a part of the long awaited Civil Rights Movement for the LGBT Community. We have created a ring for each state to symbolize their historic moment for the passing of Same-sex Marriage. Proposition Love is very proud to take an active role in the Marriage Equality Movement for our community. LOVE IS LOVE Collection - A stunning assortment of rings, pendants, bracelets and earrings, available in both silver and gold. Priced from $48 to $1,495, each item features a stylized triangle incorporated into its design as a symbol of the gay rights movement throughout history. BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED… BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
Snowflakes on your nose. Warm mittens and snowball fights. Cuddling in front of the fire as the wind howls outside. Sleigh rides through the park. Glitterywrapped presents beneath a gorgeously decorated tree. Okay, so you might not get any of those but the last one. Palm Springs = not so snowy, but if books are on your list to give, you’re still in luck.
My favorite all-time LGBT holiday book is “A Little Fruitcake” by David Valdes Greenwood, a series of essays about Christmases growing up; starting with the year Valdes Greenwood asked for a doll and scandalized the family. This is a humorous book with plenty of heartfelt emotions, too; the kind of book your giftee will want to read every year, and make a new tradition. If holidaying isn’t necessary on your holiday list, then look for “The Absolutist” by John Boyne. It’s a historical novel about a man who fought for Great Britain in World War I, alongside his friend – a man he had a terrible crush on. Years later, as he reflects on the years in the war and its aftermath, he decides to visit his friend’s
sister, who asks what happened during the war – and so he tells her. In addition, what happened will leave your giftee gasping… I’ve been a big Emma Donoghue fan for a long time, and while I recommend her latest novel “Frog Music,” my favorite of hers is “Astray.” In this book, Donoghue took little-known, quiet humaninterest stories that she discovered in various places, and imagined what really occurred behind the corner headline. Each story is short, impactful, and will make the person on your gift list think hard about which tale they liked best. (Hint: all of them, probably). The dog lover on your list will love “Travels with Casey” by Benoit Denizet-Lewis. It’s the tale of a man and his dog, and a trip around the country with the hope that they might bond a little tighter. It’s also a vast, sweeping look at dog lovers and the general doggish community in places like dog parks, dog shows, breeders, rescuers, and conferences. While there were, admittedly, a few too many “shout-outs” inside here, that didn’t make me enjoy it any less. Finally, for the historian on your gift list, wrap up “Charity & Sylvia: A Same-Sex Marriage in Early America” by Rachel Hope Cleves. Just as the title suggest, this is the story of two women who
BOOK REVIEW fell in love back when being a lesbian was barely considered possible – but it happened much more often than anyone was willing to say. The subjects of this book, in fact, managed to live together successfully, and they even married… which proves that our ancestors were hipper than we ever knew. If these gift ideas don’t fill the bill for you, then hurry to your favorite bookstore and throw yourself gently at the mercy of the first bookseller that smiles. He (or she!) will know what to do. That’s why they get the Big Bucks. Season’s Readings!

FALLS HOTTEST CLUB TRACKS PT 2
BY JIMMY NEWSUM
Last month we gave you the latest in dance floor realness, here is the rest of the list of this Falls club tracks that will surely get you moving. “Dance Like You Got Good Credit” CAZWELL From the album, Hard 2 B Fresh (Peace Bisquit) Everyone’s favorite gay hip-hopper presents another ridiculously fun club track that brilliantly showcases Cazwell’s electrifying charisma. In ‘Dance’, he tackles the world’s debt crisis and how many of us go broke trying to make ourselves look rich. Sexy dance diva Cherie Lily (wife of rocker Andrew W.K. who really is legit preggers in the song’s must-see music video) collaborates with Cazwell on this hilarious catchy ode to stylin’ poverty. “Love Come Home” KRISTINE W/ From the album, New & Number Ones (Fly Again) Kristine’s label conducted a poll on Facebook this summer, asking fans to choose the third release from the queen of club’s studio album. The overwhelming majority smartly chose “Love Come Home”, Kristine’s spiritual track about embracing change. Like most of the songs on New & Number Ones, this latest can be interpreted in multiple ways. It can be about the end of a relationship or the return of military from service or about loving oneself, because only when love comes home to live in your heart are you able to give that love to someone else. OK, that’s schmaltzy but this latest from our favorite dance floor diva is not. Part 1 remixes by Todd Terry, Subgroover, Phil Wellz, Andy Sikorski and Hermanos Inglesos. “Take My Breath Away” SYLVIA TOSUN / (Sea to Sun) The EDM remake of the ‘80s classic from Top Gun reflects on the
joyful, visceral feeling of the world’s beauty that exists all around us. What makes Tosun’s version more captivating than all previous covers of the track is the extraordinary production by Bimbo Jones. Those four-note keyboard figures, suspended placidly over synth beds, give the song a calm, weightless feel. It conjures up a sense that love is a dream state, a suspension of time. The value of Tosun’s “Take My Breath Away” isn’t in its weight but in its stillness. “We Are Young” VASSY / (Peace Bisquit) The enormous success of “Bad”, Vassy’s track with David Guetta, launched the young Aussie’s music career into overdrive. However, she’s no one hit wonder. Previous tracks like “In The Sun” served as the soundtrack for Pepsi’s ‘Real Big Summer’ campaign. “Lucky Day” was featured in Victoria Secret’s ‘Body by Victoria’ commercial. In addition, “We Are Young” was featured in the trailer for Disney’s Oscar-winning film Frozen as well as an ad campaign for Target. Leave it to the gang at Peace Bisquit to assemble all Vassy’s indielaced anthems and gems from commercials, TV and movies into one handy dandy soulfully dynamic compilation. “Forever” FRANKIE (FEATURING RALPHI ROSARIO) / (Dauman Music) The third single from house stunner Frankie grabbed the #1 spot on the Billboard club play chart in its first week. The reason? Simple. “Forever” is a great dance song with quality vocals and music. Co-written by Ralphi Rosario and three-time nominated lyricist Pamela Phillips-Oland, the song incorporates elements of late 70s classic disco to build a feel-good track that forces clubbers off their ass and onto the dance floor. Remixes by Ralphi Rosario, Twisted Dee, Reid Stefan, Majik Boys and Jeff Barringer.

Q&A
RISE OF THE FALLEN ANGELS BY SHANE GALLAGHER
”My husband and I traveled throughout India where we encountered many homeless children on the streets and witnessed how easily they were abducted and sold into (sexual) slavery,” says the celebrated LGBT fiction writer, Hans M. Hirschi. In his new novel, The Fallen Angels of Karnataka, out now, he tackles the subject of trafficking. Like his previous works, Fallen Angels is a hopeful tale. It depicts the quest for love and the belief that embracing it – in all its colorful forms - will make the world a better place. Hirschi brilliantly sets the story at the start of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, when many gay men were afraid to love. Where The Fallen Angels of Karnataka separates itself from his previous works is in its boldness. Hirschi’s decision to write the child predator as a gay man has some up in arms, arguing it perpetuates the myth that pedophiles are gay. Hirschi, himself a victim of child molestation (at the hands of a female perpetrator), stands by his work. “I am gay and I write about gay stories,” he says. “It wasn’t a conscious or political decision, just as most straight authors do not consciously make their main characters straight. In my mind, Charles was gay. It would have been cowardly to run away from the true story in my mind.” We sat down with Hans M. Hirschi to discuss the novel and the
16 THESTANDARDPS.COM
controversy behind it. Why are children in India among the worlds’ most vulnerable? I think it’s an unfortunate combination of sheer population size combined with a very corrupt system. As Hindus and Buddhists believe in re-birth, the current life, while important and a necessary learning process, isn’t as valuable as it would be for someone who believes that the present life is the only shot we have. If you die, you’ll come back, you’ll get another shot, therefore it’s not that big a deal. Combine that with the fact that children are the weakest members of society and it becomes a very dangerous situation, where parents may even be happy to assist in the disappearance of a daughter because it alleviates the cost of a dowry they may not be able to afford. How did you first come upon child trafficking in India? My husband and I traveled to India to get to know the country and find a cause we could help with. It was during our research that we learned about the plight of hundreds of thousands of children that were literally disappearing. Girls were being kidnapped and forced into slavery and marriage. Boys were being forced into child
labor. In a country with 1.4 billion people, where hundreds of millions are so poor they cannot pay the bribes it takes to get the police to investigate the disappearance of a child in a village, the numbers of missing children is quickly rising to staggering numbers. It’s an industry, not just in India, but in Africa and other Asian countries as well. We found work at a school for street children. Did the children in the school know that Alex was your husband? I’m not sure. We weren’t overly affectionate, but we certainly never made it a secret. Since the children only spoke Hindi, we relied on the translation services of friends and the people on site. How is homosexuality viewed in India? A supreme judge recently overturned the 2009 ruling legalizing homosexuality, making it illegal once more. That was a major set back. Being gay in India is difficult. Several of my best friends are out to their peers and colleagues but remain closeted to their families. One friend is even legally married to his American husband, but his family knows nothing and still hopes to marry him off to a suitable girl. Is it true laws are more favorable for the Trans community? India has an interesting tradition of looking favorably at transgendered men, hijra, and recently, the Supreme Court recognized them as a third gender. Did you set out to expose the vulnerable youth of India through your new book? The original purpose of the book was to be a travel adventure that highlighted my main character’s inner journey to maturation through his trips. Travel has always been a passion of mine and I wanted to write about some of the places I had seen. I set the story during the eighties at the start of the AIDS pandemic so I could imagine being a young gay man in the eighties. When did the story turn to one of trafficking?
When an acquaintance was convicted of owning child pornography. It had been four years since my husband and I had last seen him, but he had once been a friend! I imagined him at home with my son, sitting on our couch, eating at the table. Although a figment of my imagination, the images were so disturbing that I had a breakdown in public. The next day, my story started to change, and Charles started to morph, from an eccentric dandy to something entirely different. Do you worry that making Charles a pedophile may perpetuate the myth that child molesters are gay men? I did, and to a degree, I still do. Pedophilia is by definition a sexual orientation in its own right, set apart from the straight and gay. The woman who molested me was happily married and by all terms and definitions “straight”. But yes, of course it worries me. However, I couldn’t shy away from the story. It needed to be written. I hope to have successfully managed to display the difference between being a criminal and being a gay man. What did you learn from writing Fallen Angels of Karnataka? The controversy that has come from the book has taught me that, as a community, we are capable of discussing heavier subjects than coming out and marriage equality. LGBT literature is growing and now allows us to delve into many topics, freely and openly. What do you hope readers learn from the book? I hope readers think about what they can do to help a fallen angel. We can all open our hearts to children: as mentors, foster or adoptive parents, or through monetary donations. There are children in need, right where you are, and we can make a difference, even in the smallest way.
The Fallen Angels of Karnataka by Hans M. Hirschi is available digitally and in softcover on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble (Nook), and at selected local bookstores.

UPDATE EQCA EQUALITY CALIFORNIA
SALUTES CALIFORNIA’S PRO-EQUALITY WINNERS IN THE 2014 GENERAL ELECTION BY STEPHAN ROTH In an election marked by the defeat of many pro-equality candidates across the nation, Equality California today celebrated the victories of more than 100 of its 116 endorsed pro-equality candidates in California, based on current results. These victories at the local, state and federal level will help ensure that California remains the national leader in advancing full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. All eight of EQCA’s endorsed candidates for statewide office won their races, including Tom Torlakson in the highly competitive race for Superintendent of Public Instruction and Board of Equalization Member and EQCA Institute Board Member Betty Yee in the contest for California Controller. This year, Equality California significantly expanded its political program in a number of ways. First, it launched a pilot project in which it endorsed LGBT leaders in local races across the state, with the long-term goal of grooming and supporting candidates at the local level to eventually run for statewide office. Out of the 10 local LGBT candidates that EQCA endorsed seven secured their seats, with one race still too close to call. Most notable among these victories was Sheila Kuehl, who successfully ran for Los Angeles County Supervisor in the Third District. Her powerful and historic win makes her the first out LGBT person elected to serve as Supervisor of the nation’s largest county. Also significant was the election of Jeffrey Prang as Los Angeles County Assessor. Since Los Angeles County has over 10 million residents, Prang’s election makes him the LGBT officeholder serving the largest number of constituents in the nation. Other EQCA-endorsed, openly LGBT candidates with wins included James Williamson for Palm Springs Unified School Board, DR Heywood for Anaheim City School Board, Scott Houston for West Basin Municipal Water District, Jay Hansen for Sacramento City Unified School District, and Shelley Kaplan for Cathedral City Council. The LGBT Legislative Caucus will welcome one new member this year, Evan Low in Assembly District 28. Other members of the LGBT Legislative Caucus who were up for re-election, Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins in Assembly District 78, Susan Eggman in Assembly District 13 and Rich Gordon in Assembly District 24, all won re-election. “These wins help ensure that as our current leaders are termlimited out or move to higher office there will be a deep bench of 100-percent pro-equality candidates waiting to take their place,”
said Rick Zbur, EQCA executive director. “We know full equality isn’t a short-term project, which is why investing in the future is so important.” In another part of its expanded political program, Equality California this year also endorsed California candidates at the federal level, with 37 of its endorsed, pro-equality candidates winning at the polls. These included openly gay incumbent U.S. Representative Mark Takano in Congressional District 41 and strong LGBT ally Ted Lieu in Congressional District 33. EQCA also implemented a major get-out-the-vote program that included direct candidate contributions; mailing voter guides to over 330,000 members across the state; deploying field teams and volunteers to support candidates with door-to-door canvassing; and extensive phone banking with over 18,000 calls to its members. EQCA-endorsed candidates in tightly contested races emerged victorious, including Jacqui Irwin in Assembly District 44, while others lost hard-fought races, including Sharon Quirk-Silva in Assembly District 65 in Orange County and Rebecca Kaplan in her bid to be Oakland’s first openly LGBT mayor. “As a result of EQCA’s work and the dedication and support of the LGBT community, California has made great strides in educating the public about our issues in the last 15 years,” said Zbur. “That civil rights for LGBT people continue to be used as a wedge issue demonstrates that, even in California, and across America there’s still much work to be done.” THE RESULTS FOR EQCA-ENDORSED CANDIDATES: California Statewide Office Governor — Jerry Brown* re-elected Lieutenant Governor — Gavin Newsom* re-elected Secretary of State — Alex Padilla elected Controller — Betty Yee elected Treasurer — John Chiang elected Attorney General — Kamala Harris* re-elected Insurance Commissioner — Dave Jones* re-elected Superintendent of Public Instruction — Tom Torlakson* re-elected For complete election results visit www.eqca.org

Regarding the need for an assisted living community with a focus on LGBT seniors, Steve Kregel, Chief Operating Officer at Northstar Senior Living explains, “ Unfortunately, many LGBT seniors face open discrimination as a result of their sexual orientation and often go back into the closet when selecting an assisted living facility. Now these deserving seniors can live in a safe and caring environment where they are free to be themselves” Stonewall Gardens, believing in compassionate care. LEGALLY SPEAKING
SO YOU AGREED TO BE A TRUSTEE FOR YOUR FRIEND OR RELATIVE - NOW WHAT? BY CHRISTOPHER HERITAGE We help lots of clients with their estate plans, crafting Wills and Trusts and other documents that are designed to protect people and their assets. A revocable living trust is often a good choice because it provides for the smooth transfer of property if the owner becomes incapacitated or dies. It usually avoids handling the estate through a probate court, which is a public process that can be very costly and time-consuming. For every trust, there must be a trustee - the person who is authorized to manage and control all the property in the trust. In a revocable living trust, the initial trustee is usually the person who created the trust (called the grantor or settlor) – the owner of the property transfers everything into the name of the trust, and then controls it as the trustee. A great advantage of a trust over just having a Will is that a successor trustee takes over if that person becomes incapacitated or passes away, and there is no need to go to probate court to have someone appointed. The successor trustee continues to manage the property in whatever way the terms of the trust require. For single individuals, or partners who are not married or registered domestic partners, the choice for a successor trustee is usually a relative, partner or friend. These people agree to be the trustee if and when something happens. Although the estate in a trust may not need to be probated, California has strict legal requirements for the performance of trustees and the management of trust property. It is very important that a successor trustee understand the role he or she will play, and the rules that must be followed.
of the estate will be divided up among them after all bills are paid and other requirements met. The trustee is responsible for conserving the assets, growing them, if possible, and delivering the assets to the beneficiaries.
Trusts can range in value from a few thousand to many millions of dollars. As you might expect, a successor trustee’s time and effort will be proportional to the complexity of the estate. But the legal requirements are the same, regardless of the value of the estate. Most important is the responsibility of the trustee as a fiduciary – managing the assets in the trust for the benefit of others. Heirs and beneficiaries are usually named, and the trust states how the assets
Most trustees are ordinary folks who have no experience with managing estates for other people, so they usually retain an attorney to help them administer the trust. Lots of details must be handled over a period of months or years. An estate planning attorney is familiar with all of the duties spelled out in the Trust Administration sections of the California Probate Code, and can assist the trustee with all of those administrative tasks.

Whether the trustee has an attorney or not, it is essential to document everything that happens. Notices of the trust administration and copies of the trust document must be sent to all beneficiaries and heirs. The estate must be valued on the date of death, which may require professional appraisals of personal and real property. Liquid assets such as cash, bank accounts and money market funds must be transferred into a trust account. All valid bills, invoices and other creditor claims must be paid out of this account, along with any expenses for maintaining property or administering the estate. Account statements must be kept in order and reviewed regularly to track the continuing value of the estate. Investments need to be managed to avoid or minimize any losses. If there is real property, it may need to be sold and the proceeds deposited into the trust account, or are distributed directly to beneficiaries before the trust administration is closed. Once all debts have been paid, and all assets are in the form required for distribution, there is usually a final accounting. This details everything that happened to estate assets from the first valuation on the date of death to the current date. Unless they waive it in writing, all beneficiaries and heirs are entitled to an accounting at least once a year. If the trust administration continues into additional years, an interim accounting must be sent out at the end of each year, and the final accounting is done just before distributions are made. If the trustee does not have an attorney, it is strongly recommended that a CPA or other accounting professional be retained to prepare the accounting and handle the filing of required personal and estate tax returns. Failure to follow tax laws can result in serious losses to estate assets and to beneficiaries and heirs. Finally, distributions are made according to the terms of the trust. The trustee will write checks on the trust account for cash bequests, and transfer other personal and real property as required. At this point, the trustee may write a check to himself or herself for serving as trustee and administrator of the estate, if the trust terms permit it. The amount will be stated in the trust, or if not, will be determined by local customary fees based on the trustee’s detailed records of hours spent and tasks performed.

FITNESS THE REASONS FOR THE SEASON BY DENNIS MASON, BFA, CPT
It wasn’t all that long ago when the world was a simpler place and operated less frantically. The little things in life meant a lot, and part of the fun of the holiday season was in the preparation. Spending quality time with friends and loved ones was looked upon as a joyous part of the season. And, giving thanks for all the abundance we had was the grateful thing to do. Do you remember how much fun it was getting ready for Halloween all by itself without being constantly reminded of Thanksgiving looming only a few weeks away? Did you ever wonder what happened to that way of life? Now, even before you have a chance to hang up your costume, you hear the first notes of Christmas songs on the radio, in television commercials and in your local stores. Hey, wait a minute! We haven’t even started our Thanksgiving plans yet. Oh well, no time to think about that now. We have work to do. Is it our turn to host Thanksgiving dinner this year or is it Aunt Sue’s? In the blink of an eye, the race will begin for the mad rush to Chanukah and especially Christmas, like it was some sort of athletic event to see how fast you can get to the finish line with the most things for gifts. Ads for products are everywhere! Television, radio and computer speakers are all shouting to “hurry”, “order now”, and “for the best selection, shop at this store or that one”. Now what about that gift list? What can I get for the person who has everything? Did I forget anything or anyone? Oh wait, maybe I should wear my Swat Team riot gear to go shopping. One never knows when another
shopper might taser me if I try to buy the last HD flat screen smartTV left at the sale price. Then there’s the self-question: “How do the selections I make to give as presents define me as a person?” No doubt about it, everywhere you go, there is someone, or some business, or some ad trying to sell you some-thing! Most of the time, these are simply things you don’t need; or simply put, THENEEDS! An easier way to make it through the holidays is simply focus your mind on just sharing peace, love and happiness with one another. Remember, those are the things that give real meaning to the season; all else will follow. Not only that, but it’s addictive. Watch and see how it spreads and comes back to YOU. WELLNESS
EAT LIKE A PEASANT, LOOK LIKE A KING…OR QUEEN
BY DR. KENNETH E. TOTH, BA, MAT, DC, RN
‘Tis the season…to get together with all your friendly friends and hopefully friendly relatives and have the time of your life! It’s the time to forget the grudges and misgivings that might have reared their ugly heads over the last year and start anew…with everybody. Hit the parties, sing or listen to your favorite songs, wear your brightest and finest, and rehearse smiling your way into the coming year of success, happiness, great health, and gratitude! Help someone who needs your help, share your wealth (we all have some extra if we remember to look around), and totally enjoy yourself! BUT! Don’t forget to watch out what you put into your mouth! I’m sure there will be a few situations where you’ll just completely lose your head and slurp up some seemingly irresistible thing that looks a whole lot better than it tastes. And don’t forget the mouth feel. If it’s smooth, it’s probably a keeper; but if it’s gooey, you might want to consider thinking twice before taking seconds. And what about seconds? No, I don’t mean like some of the stuff at Marshall’s with the seconds warning label. I mean…you know…eating more than you know you should. Remember, the mantra is “graze”. Be picky, or even fussy. Look around the buffet of goodies and give it the once over survey for protein, carbs and fats before you make your selections! That’s right, give it a really good, overall assessment, identifying the things that are the best choices for that fabulous body that you’ve been working on so consistently.
Eliminate the garbage. That would be the carby, overly sugary stuff with the cheap mouth feel. Then look for the aged cheeses, fancy vegetables, and water crackers. And last, nail the protein choices. If you stick with these choices as much as possible, and never forgetting the protein, you’ll have a great time with little or no nutritional damage! Someone once told me that Carol Channing has had a very selective diet of protein and vegetables for many, many years, and she never missed a single show (5,000 plus) of “Hello Dolly”. And she’s going stronger than ever in her 90s! That’s called smarts, not luck! Smart people do not gamble with their health like it’s a slot machine. They do their nutritional homework and learn what they have to do to be the leaders of the pack. They are not sheep-like followers who keep repeating the same nutritional wrongs over and over for a perhaps shorter and less healthy lifetime. Beat the miserable averages with nutritional smarts and enjoy a fabulous life in that incredible machine called your body! Dr. Kenneth Toth, BA, MAT, DC, RN, CPT, holds multiple degrees and credentials as a science educator, chiropractor, registered nurse, and personal trainer. He is currently limiting his professional activities to Personal Training/Nutritional Coaching. Dr. Ken is accepting new clients for personal training along with nutritional coaching. NUTRITION STEM CELLS MAY BE THE BOOSTER,
BUT GOOD NUTRITION IS THE SUSTAINER BY LINDA BERGERSEN, BOARD CERTIFIED NUTRITION CONSULTANT, MS
Stem cells have come upon the medical scene as the new, futuristic treatment that just may save us from the ills of society. When it comes down to it, stem cell therapy is viewed as the new magic bullet, the new quick fix – yet an expensive quick fix since most treatments are not yet covered by insurance. There is no question stem cells work. I have seen it with my own eyes with friends and family members being treated and subsequently having some form of recovery; in fact, everyone can view the effect by watching Peyton Manning’s NFL career soar this past year. At 37, he is at his best after having his neck injury treated with stem cells. I am not saying stem cells will correct any health issue completely, 100 percent, or permanently, but some feel any amount of success is better than none. There are treatments deriving stem cells from your own bone marrow, fat, or blood; and stem cells are available from donors, involving fairly simple injection treatments to address orthopedic conditions, heart problems, and neurological disorders, with promising research and trials for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and type 1 diabetes. Controversial embryonic cells do not need to even be considered. Any parent can now bank their newborn’s cord blood stem cells at the time of birth, ready for use at any time in their future. The American Medical Association (AMA) reports that currently there are “life-saving treatments for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, other blood disorders, and some solid tumors.” We are all filled with stem cells from the day we are born, generated throughout fetal development. Stem cells divide, constantly forming, not only other stem cells, but also brain, bone, blood or heart cells. They are the only type of cell within us that can form different types of cells. What is important to point out is that most of these major ills that stem cells treat are conditions that have taken years to develop in the body, like heart disease and neuropathy. And what is the primary cause of these developing conditions? It comes down to poor nutrition.
30 THESTANDARDPS.COM
Issues caused by poor nutrition (as well as toxins) have been building in our bodies for years or decades throughout our lives, and soon they become out of control. Eating poorly is not always fault of our own, because we are dependent on food manufacturers and restaurants to feed a large part of our diet. It’s a shame that eating the wrong foods, like the sugared drinks, donuts and fried chicken, or consuming toxic elements, does not get noticed nor have repercussions right away so we can immediately see what effect they have or will have on our health. We have to wait until the affect builds and builds, then manifests into pain and disease, cancer or diabetes. That’s the time when we panic and search for the remedy. I do believe in stem cell therapy, but…let me explain. First, what really are the origins of stem cells? Nutrition. Stem cells need to be nourished to thrive. In fact, the recommendations to improve stem cell growth within the body are the same recommendations for a person to become healthier: reduce or cut out sugar consumption, reduce calories, lower triglycerides, do not smoke, and get more exercise. The poorer the diet, the less healthy the stem cells, and less proliferation. With cancer patients, the stem cells within them have been stressed, compromised and possibly deficient; harvesting cells would produce less than from a healthier patient. This is where donor cells could be more helpful. Equipped with more stem cells, the chance of disease is decreased because stem cells naturally travel through the body guarding our health; eating properly gives us a more defensive army to keep us well. With this, comes health and the deadly or debilitating diseases that would be rescued by stem cell infusion is then no longer needed. Just keep in mind; most of the issues stem cell therapy improves are those that normally can be treated with therapeutic nutrition, meaning a strict dietary regimen plus targeted supplements. But who wants to do this before they ever realize there is a problem? Not many, I’ve found.
NUTRITION effort of learning what good nutrition can do for their health. The realization that many do not grasp is that disease can be overcome with nutrition.
If a person is facing death or a debilitated life because of a major health issue, stem cell therapy is a viable, even necessary thing to do. But let’s be real, and realize that a good thing does not last forever. You may have that $6,000-$30,000 treatment, and go back to your comfortable life, and the diet you’ve always had and enjoyed for years. Stem cell treatments can be of benefit for maybe several years unless there is a change in lifestyle to the better. A person develops heart disease (which could be prevented by proper foods), goes for stem cell treatment, gets some degree of success; but that person can once again have his heart disease progress over coming years, or then develop some other affliction, because he never changed his eating habits. And so another therapy procedure would be necessary. Now that stem cell therapies are becoming recognized, I have been hearing people excited about the possibility of getting rid of their joint pain, or diabetes, and even such a minor thing as bronchitis. For someone to actually agree to pay at least $6,000 to remedy these issues rather than seek a nutritionist and relieve it naturally is beyond me; it’s even frightening to think that our society is that weak of mind and determination. It’s a society of ‘the quick fix’ syndrome, and once again, nutrition is lost along the wayside. The person with the money who has aches in joints would much rather run for the treatment. It comes down to the fact that most do not understand the correlation between diet and health issues, or do not want to take the
Neuropathy treated with stem cells is currently in clinical trials, looking very promising; but newly flowing blood to an injured leg has shown to bring heightened inflammation. The process of inflammation is naturally a beneficial response by the body, yet at the same time can do harm, and get in the way of recovery. Nutrients have been studied, and certain ones have been found to be the best at regulating the inflammatory environment, and help stem cells do their job in restoring blood flow to the limbs. Certain proteins induce stem cell growth, and, like all proteins, their structure is based on amino acids acquired through nutrition. Polyphenols and amino acids have shown in research to be prominent in aiding stem cell therapy; the best being tryptophan, EGCG (green tea extract) and curcumin, show that nutrition is definitely behind stem cell integrity. Like all other cells, stem cells can also lose their ability to repair as they age, as the rest of the body ages. And it can be viewed this way: good nutrition can hamper the aging factors of declining stem cells. As our stem cell bank decreases, our homeostasis, or maintenance of good health, declines, meaning we are more prone to ill health and we age quicker. A deficient environment can hinder the proliferation of stem cells, while heightened infusion of nutrient based foods and supplements can accelerate the production and release of stem cells. Stem cell therapy is evolving into a highly sought after preventive measure for anti-aging, anti-disease regimen for those who have the means. In the future, treatments could become common enough to make it affordable for most anyone. If you want to be healthier and possibly slow the aging process, having more stem cells in your body is the key. If you want more stem cells naturally, feed your body healthful nutrients with the most optimum diet possible. As it’s been stated, stem cells may be the booster, but nutrition is the sustainer.

EPICUREAN
A FARE FOR ENTERTAINING BY CHEF ANDRE CARTHEN
It’s that time of year again; shopping, eating, family, eating, entertaining and did I mention, eating! Fall / Winter is the time of the year when the body naturally wants to consume more and store it up. But that doesn’t mean that all foods need to be heavily and calorie laden. For health conscience entertaining, think of foods that are rich in fiber and nutrition; oatmeal, squash, pumpkin, nuts, collard greens with smoked turkey, fruits, baked apples, poached pears, even fruit pies, cranberries, and pomegranates. Side dishes; stuffing with couscous or quinoa, roasted vegetables, baked sweet potatoes; minus the butter & marshmallows; and for your Turkey, stick to the white meat without the skin. Warm hearty soups are also a healthy way to go; Pumpkin, Squash, Sweet Potatoes, Carrot, Chicken Kale, and Beet. When it comes to libations, studies are showing that even red wine can be a healthy choice, in moderation.
Smaller Portions: Always go for the smaller portions. Reach for the smaller plate, if you go back for more it’s not quite as bad as going back for more after a large plate. Exercise: Going to a function…park a little further away. Stick to your exercise routine, if you don’t have one, start it now. No need to wait until the New Year.
Here are a few tips for keeping the holiday pounds in check: STOP eating now: Start cutting back on your eating now. Don’t look at it as a diet, more as I’m going to be fierce for the holidays
GIFT GIVING Are you tired of giving the obligatory bottle of wine? First, I for one always enjoy a bottle or two of wine, so keep it coming. When giving a gift, I first think what my host might enjoy, then I think of something I might enjoy or have never tried. It might be a flavored vodka, a spice, gourmet olive oil, smoked salt, etc…. It truly is about the thought and not the last minute stop on your way at the local liquor store. Candles and aromatherapy gifts all work well. Take the stress out of the holidays and think ahead. Most important “Entertaining is all about making guest feel at home in your home! Relax and enjoy.
Water: start every day, meal, and party with a glass of water. Filling and 0 calories.

A bit of brainstorming is all you need to figure out the best theme for your celebration. From an outdoor autumn harvest to a New Year’s masquerade, the sky’s the limit. For a fun twist on holiday celebrations, consider having a favorite movie be the theme for the party. Include the theme on the invitations you send so guests know the details! FOOD Whether you’re serving appetizers or planning a full-out feast, food is a party essential. Enhance your food service by renting everything you need for an impressive presentation. Silver food chafers, flatware, serving trays and more are available from your local rental store. The expert staff can make recommendations based on your menu and help you select the perfect items for food and drink. You might even consider renting a few fun extras, such as a chocolate or champagne fountain to really impress guests and make your party stand out.

ENTERTAINMENT No great holiday party is complete without entertainment. Let music set the mood by creating a custom playlist. Then amplify those tunes by renting a professional sound system and dance floor to watch guests move and grove. DECOR You may already have some decor to use at your holiday-themed party, but to really impress this year, consider fresh ideas for unexpected decorations. If you’re short on time or simply aren’t crafty, you can rent table linens, runners and centerpieces. Visit www. RentalHQ.com to learn more about affordable holiday decor rental options. When deciding on decor, don’t forget about the importance of lighting. Not only do the right lights create the ideal ambience, they also provide an element of safety and brighten up dark spaces so guests have more room to mingle. EXTRAS The extra touches - big and small - are what truly spice up a party and give it that professionally planned feel. Small additions like coat racks eliminate the pile of coats and purses, keeping rooms neat and tidy. Extra chairs ensure guests are comfortable whether they are visiting, eating or drinking. For a truly festive celebration, rent a bar and set up a drink station with all the barware needed to really impress guests. If you’re having a big party, don’t pack into your house - rent a tent and heaters if necessary and let the good times roll!
