Cool, Iconic, Modern… Palm Springs By Cindy Duffy
Christopher Kennedy
This year marks the ninth anniversary of Modernism Week’s signature February event, an exciting 11-day celebration of mid-century modern design, architecture, art, fashion and culture. The event, which has become a highlight in Palm Springs, began in 2006 as a means of showcasing Palm Springs’ world-renowned mid-century modern architecture. While Palm Springs has long enjoyed worldwide fame as a celebrity haven and international vacation destination, its midcentury modern architecture started to attract a new market that put it on the map for cultural tourism as well as fun in the sun. The growing interest in the architecture resulted in the birth of the first Modernism Week to promote and celebrate the ideals, design, and culture of modernism. From its humble beginnings, Modernism Week has continued to grow exponentially to eleven days and more than 150 events. As the variety and sophistication of events continues to grow, a greater number of people from around the globe are drawn to join us in this celebration, bringing more than $12 million into the local economy in 2013.

As a response to positive feedback from attendee survey results, Modernism Week has added more options for evening entertainment this year with the introduction of “Modernism Week After Dark,” a new and exciting series of nightly entertainment including cocktail parties at stylish hotels, music clubs, and venues featuring live bands, deejays and dancing. An exclusive, retroinspired “Modern Mambo” party will kickoff the festivities on February 13, 2014. Another new and much anticipated addition is The Modernism Week Show House 2014: The Christopher Kennedy Compound presented by Luxe Interiors + Design. Under the direction of noted Palm Springs designer Christopher Kennedy, an unparalleled roster of celebrity designers have re-imagined an architecturally significant Stan Sackley home, circa 1971, which will be open to the public for tours and will also be the site of several evening events. Perhaps the biggest news for Modernism Week this year is the recent announcement of a partnership with Goldenvoice, creators of Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and Stagecoach Country Music Festival.
Goldenvoice will provide support through corporate sponsorships, national and international marketing campaigns, event logistics and special event production. “This partnership, similar to our sponsorship agreements and partnerships with the City of Palm Springs, Land Rover and the Palm Springs Historical Society, allows Modernism Week to build additional capacity and expand our educational outreach throughout the Coachella Valley,” said Modernism Week Board Chairman, J. Chris Mobley. “Modernism Week enthusiastically seeks out collaborative opportunities that serve and promote our mission.” The mission of Modernism Week, a California 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is to celebrate and foster appreciation of mid-century architecture and design, as well as contemporary thinking in these fields, by encouraging education, preservation and sustainable modern living as represented in Palm Springs. In light of this mission, Modernism Week and Goldenvoice have future plans to expand programs throughout the calendar year and to develop specialty VIP hotel, ticket and shuttle packages. In the future, possible quarterly or even year-round programming will allow Modernism Week to expand its scholarship program for college students pursuing educations in the fields of architecture and design, and to increase its grants to local and state preservation organizations for their efforts to preserve modernist architecture throughout the state of California. As this year’s event draws to a close, organizers will already be working on details for a spectacular 10th annual Modernism Week, February 12-22, 2015.

Take Five
Five questions with Lisa Vossler Smith, Executive Director of Modernism Week venues, world-class architects and historians, and a star-studded lineup of program participants including friends from KCRW (Frances Anderton, Mallery Roberts Morgan and Madeline Brand), Bravo’s Property Envy (Stephen Collins), and HGTV’s Curb Appeal (John Gidding). We will have two debut films, including “Nobody Famous Ever Lived Here” about the amazing Stahl House, Case Study #22 on Feb 15; and “Quiet Elegance” a documentary about Palm Springs architect Hugh M. Kaptur, whom we are honoring on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars on Feb 14.
1. You were the former Senior Director of Administration and Operations for the Palm Springs Art Museum and last year you were named Executive Director of Palm Springs Modernism Week; can you tell us what similarities and differences you have found between the two positions? In both jobs, I have had the wonderful opportunity to work on exhibitions, lectures and special events with iconic architects and designers, which has been tremendously insightful and rewarding. I have also had the good fortune of working with incredibly talented co-workers and amazing volunteers. The greatest difference is that Modernism Week has the unique challenge of presenting a year’s worth of valley-wide activities over a brief 11-day period, where the museum is established as a year-round venue for arts and culture. 2. What can attendees of this year’s event anticipate? Modernism Week will continue to have the exclusive, highquality tours and programs that our participants expect, with new and exciting additions to the schedule. Our new major sponsor Land Rover will present a fabulous first-time event at Frank Sinatra’s Twin Palms Estate with their Design Director and CCO, Gerry McGovern on Feb 15. The popular lecture series has been expanded with multiple

3. You and your husband are founding members of the Architecture & Design Council of the PS Art Museum, which architect from the Mid Century era is your favorite and why? Of course, I find it impossible to pick a favorite in a field that includes Albert Frey and John Lautner, but my sentimental favorites are Don Wexler, E. Stewart Williams, and Hugh M. Kaptur. Not only have I had the pleasure of working on special projects with each of them and have grown to know and love their respective families, but I also deeply admire their designs, as well as their brilliant use of the natural surroundings. 4. Will the organization be awarding scholarships this year and if so what are the criteria for potential winners? Yes, each year Modernism Week awards local high school students with four-year renewable scholarships. We recognize students who demonstrate excellence in scholastic and community achievements and are pursuing a college or university degree in design or architecture. This year we will give two scholarships and have plans to increase the number in the future. 5. What is your favorite event during Modernism Week? It’s too hard to pick a favorite with such an amazing selection! I love shopping at the Modernism Show & Sale, taking a doubledecker bus tour and visiting Sunnylands. The Prefab Showcase and Modern Living Expo offer a fun, family-friendly “village” setting with live music and creative food trucks. I am excited to see the Vintage Fashion Show by Déjà Vu and the new designer show house, The Christopher Kennedy Compound. The lecture and film series is always a favorite for me, because you can often buy tickets at the door, and the speakers present a fascinating and intriguing variety of topics.

Jason Dottley’s Return to Love Story Star of TV’s Sordid Lives On Life and Love After Divorce By Mick Sandoval
When Sordid Lives star Jason Dottley married his long-term partner, playwright-filmmaker Del Shores, in 2003, the pair imagined theirs would be a love to last a lifetime. Together, the ‘first couple of West Hollywood’ (as fans of the show often dubbed them) fought hard for marriage equality, becoming poster boys of the movement. That was, until last year, when Del Shores announced via Facebook that they were splitting. In his post, Shores wrote, “This was not what I wanted, but I must now accept what Jason wants.” Disappointed fans waited to hear Dottley’s reason for leaving, however, their wait would be a long one. The early 30s Mississippi native chose to remain silent. Even Shores admitted in an interview with the Dallas Voice that he didn’t know why Dottley departed. “Let me put it this way,” he explained to reporter Rich Lopez, “I come up with reasons I don’t cast certain (actors), but the bottom line is, I don’t want (them) to play the role. The bottom line was Jason said, ‘I don’t want to be married to you anymore.’ And there was no negotiation on any level.” After a year of personal contemplation, Dottley says he is ready to break his silence. More than that, he is eager to experience love again. He sings about it in “Love Story”, a song he wrote that releases next month. The slice of 80’s pop, layered with emotionally compelling lyrics, is the first of a three-part experience Dottley is calling The Love Story Project that will also include a music video and a Love-U-Mentary film. You made your marriage with Del Shores public. Why did you choose to keep your divorce private for so long? I chose to keep my pain and my journey to myself, to write about it, to learn from it. Discussing it with total strangers while I was lost in the trek myself was not on the agenda for me. How long has it been since the divorce became final? April 2013. You were married nine years. Walking down the aisle, did you intend for it to be forever? Of course I did.
16 theStandardps.com
When did the blooms first start falling from the rose? That sounds so pretty. About two years before we separated. Were you fighting or simply drifting in different directions? We evolved into people who didn’t compliment and inspire each other any more. We stopped healing, growing. It wasn’t like I threw the towel in the first time it got ugly. It was two years of collapsing before the foundation had to be scrapped entirely. Then we fought. Divorce doesn’t bring the best out of you. When did you know it was over? At some point, a fire inside of you for someone burns out. It’s a cold, lonely feeling. You just know. What is your relationship with Del like now? We are peaceful and out of each other’s lives. Are you prepared to see him with a new man? I saw pics of Del with a guy that I heard he’s dating. He looked so happy. It eased my guilt for leaving. As for him seeing me with a new man, well, once I’m ready to share that part of my life openly again, he’ll see and he’ll be fine. Is it true that Del recast you in Sordid Lives? Can you imagine for one minute how awkward that set would
be? I’m not friends with anyone in that cast because of my divorce. If he has recast the role, congrats to the new guy, whom I hear is the original Ty from the movie. My life has moved on from Sordid Lives, so it’s not something that I feel I lost. It’s cherished, and I’m fine to leave my work as Ty complete as-is. And, I am definitely the better Ty. (Laughs) Yeah, I said it. Del knows it too. Has it been hard to contemplate love after divorce? If you go out looking for love, you might as well stay home. Love will find you. What is one thing you will do in your next relationship as a result of what you learned from your last? I will communicate better. I will compromise more and I will always make sure he knows that he’s my everything. Will you walk down the aisle again? You bet your ass. Will the next time be forever? Who can say? I believe we are intended to have a series of love affairs. You don’t believe in one soul mate? I absolutely believe in soul mates. Nothing about a soul mate says that you are meant to be together forever, or even together at all. My three best friends are all my soul mates, but I’m not romantically interested in them. Do you believe in monogamy? 100%. I do not share. I’ll guest star occasionally, though. Why did you decide to launch The Love project? “The Love Story Project” is my attempt to shine a light on gay love. The project aims to help people see gay lovers as people and not ideas. I encourage everyone to visit the website, share your story and become a part of it yourself! Are you encouraged by the response the project has received so far? I am! It has pushed me further than I ever thought I could take this project. What are you looking for in your next love project? Someone who is ambitious, fearless, and inspiring. I’ve already found him but I ain’t giving details. I’ve learned the hard way to keep my heart private. Visit www.JasonsLoveStoryProject.com for more information of Jason Dottley and his Love Story Project.

I Can’t See Myself describes how. Dorothy’s show, I Came Out in a Darkroom, was inspired by a conversation with a much younger lesbian who said to her in astonishment, “My God, you came out before Stonewall, I’ve never known a pre-Stonewall dyke before. Tell me what it was like.” For more info go to www.desertroseplayhouse.org or call 760-202-3000.

Federal Appeals Court Lets Stand California Law Protecting Youth from Dangerous Anti-Gay “Conversion” Therapies Provided by EQCA
Kamala Harris
Last week, the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit let stand an earlier decision by a three-judge panel of the same court upholding Senate Bill 1172, a California statute enacted in 2012 that protects minors from dangerous and ineffective mental health treatments that falsely claim to be able to change a young person’s sexual orientation. The California Legislature enacted the law to prevent state-licensed mental health professionals from attempting to change the sexual orientation or gender expression of minor patients. The Legislature based the law on the unanimous consensus of the nation’s leading medical and mental health associations that such purported treatments have no scientific basis and put children at risk of serious harms, including depression and suicide. In the lawsuit that the Ninth Circuit ruled in today, therapists who wish to engage in these practices on minor patients and who argued that the law violated their right to freedom of speech challenged the statute. In August 2013, a panel of the Ninth Circuit held that California’s law was a permissible regulation of medical treatment to protect public health and safety and did not violate the free speech rights of therapists. The Ninth

Circuit’s ruling today allows that decision to stand, thereby ensuring that California’s law will remain in effect. California’s law was defended in the case by California Attorney General Kamala Harris and by Equality California, the lead sponsor of the legislation and California’s largest organization advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Equality California was represented by the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and the law firm of Munger, Tolles, & Olson LLP. Said Equality California Executive Director John O’Connor, “Equality California is proud to have sponsored and defended this important law. We are grateful to Senator Ted Lieu for authoring it and to Governor Brown for signing it. We are also grateful for medical and mental health associations that supported the law and helped to educate the legislature about the serious dangers posed by scientifically baseless efforts to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender expression. No ethical professional should put a young person’s life and well-being at risk by engaging in these ineffective and dangerous practices. Every young person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and to be valued for who they are.” NCLR Legal Director Shannon Minter,
Esq. added: “Today’s decision affirms that California can protect young people and their families from being deceived and harmed by unethical therapists who falsely claim they can change a person’s sexual orientation. These practices have no scientific basis and can cause serious, lasting harms that devastate families and destroy young lives. California has a duty to protect the public from deceptive and unsafe practices by medical professionals who are licensed by the state. The Legislature did the right thing by enacting this protective law, and the ruling today strongly confirms that other states should follow California’s example and adopt similar laws.” Three of the Ninth Circuit’s 27 active judges dissented from today’s ruling, based on disagreement with the original panel’s reasoning. The dissenting judges took no position on whether the statute is valid, stating, “The regulation at issue may very well constitute a valid exercise of California’s police power.” New Jersey enacted a similar law in 2013. A federal district court upheld New Jersey’s law on November 8, 2013, and that law is currently the subject of an appeal before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. In that litigation, NCLR represents Garden State Equality, New Jersey’s largest LGBT rights organization.

Blue Cross reversing course, will offer gay N.C. couples family policies North Carolina’s largest insurer is reversing course and now says it will offer family coverage to same-sex married couples and domestic partners in new policies. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina said Wednesday it’s making the change for policies sold starting in February and taking effect March 1. The announcement comes after a report by The News & Observer of Raleigh was picked up nationally by the Associated Press that the Chapel Hill-based insurer cancelled family coverage sold to 20 gay and lesbian couples on the federal insurance marketplace. The insurer said it had intended to update its plans to include those offerings, but postponed making the change
in terminology as the company scrambled to get ready for what turned out to be a rocky rollout of subsidized insurance under the Affordable Care Act. Blue Cross said it had planned to change the definition next year, but CEO Brad Wilson says the insurer should have been more thoughtful about the delay. Associated Press contributed to this report.
Mayor of Olympics host Sochi: “We have no homosexuals in our city” The mayor of the Russian Black Sea resort city of Sochi, soon to play host to the Winter Olympics, says there are no gay people in his city. Anatoly Pakhomov, a member of President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party, says that gay people would be welcome at the games as long as they respect the laws of the Russian Federation and do not “impose their habits on others,” reported the BBC. But when asked whether gay people had to hide their sexuality in Sochi, the mayor said: “No, we just say that it is your business, it’s your life. However, it is not accepted here in the Caucasus where we live. We do not have them in our city.” Boris Nemtsov, former Deputy Prime Minister and now a leader of the opposition, said the Pakhomov’s claim was laughable. “As far as I know there are several gay clubs in Sochi,” said Nemtsov. “How do they survive? Why they are not bankrupt?” Earlier this month, President Vladimir Putin claimed gay people would be welcome in Sochi, providing they “just leave the children alone”. “We don’t have a ban on non-traditional sexual relations,” he said. “We have a ban on the propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia.” In a subsequent interview, Putin denied accusations of homophobia, saying he was not prejudiced as he was on “friendly terms” with several people who are gay.

northern Cyprus has voted to repeal a colonial era ban prohibiting gay sex, a move that makes europe the third continent in the world with no laws criminalizing homosexuality. turkish Cypriot deputies passed an amendment on monday repealing a colonial-era law that punished homosexual acts with up to five years in prison, reported The Guardian. The change still has to be endorsed by the republic’s president, Derviş eroglu, who is expected to support the reform. once enacted, the new law will mean that no states in europe, north america, or australasia (comprising australia, new Zealand and new guinea) criminalize homosexuality. “these pernicious anti-gay laws, which protect no one and cause deep distress and harm to gay and lesbian people, still exist in 82 legal jurisdictions. But that is one fewer than yesterday, and this we must celebrate,” said Jonathan Cooper, chief executive of the london-based human dignity trust. the trust had sought legal action in the european Court of human rights in strasbourg against northern Cyprus for its laws against homosexuality.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Property Ownership and the Do-It-Yourself Blues By Christopher Heritage
Most married couples and registered domestic partners living in California soon learn about community property. “What’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine” governs most property ownership here. Pre- or post-marital agreements and state law will provide clear guidance for settling property issues, if the relationships end. But what about partners who don’t marry or register? Do California statutes govern their separate and joint property? No. They are two individuals with no recognized legal relationship, and they usually don’t have any legal responsibility for each other or for each other’s property. What happens if one of them becomes ill or dies? Or if they just decide to split up? I see the fall-out from broken relationships every day in my practice. And this is what really worries me. There are far too many unmarried or unregistered couples who do nothing to protect themselves and their assets. Or think there are simple doit-yourself tools for protecting themselves. Worst of all, some believe that a “palimony” suit can resolve everything, if they split up and disagree about assets. Couples often buy a home together, and open joint checking and savings accounts. They may own cars, buy furniture, make other investments together. Who owns all these things? Both of them? What if one paid a little more of the down payment on their home than the other? Does he or she own a little more of the property? How much more? Is it a gift to the one who paid less? One “simple” way to share property is to own it as joint tenants with right of survivorship. Cash accounts, investments, houses and cars can be owned this way. If one partner dies, the other fully owns the property. No probate. No hassle. It was ours, now it’s mine. But this is a risky way to protect yourself and your property. Here are a few of the very serious pitfalls: If one joint owner has a legal liability, creditor judgment, or is found at fault in an accident, the entire bank account, house or other property can be taken, even though the other joint owner is not involved. Joint ownership of a house, for example, requires the agreement and signature of both owners to sell, refinance, rent out, or carry out other transactions. One owner can act only for his or her share of the property, not the entire property. Suppose the two owners disagree about selling or managing
28 theStandardps.com
the property? There can be deadlock until mediation or some other intervention resolves it. If one joint owner becomes mentally incapacitated, the property is in legal limbo. It might be necessary to go through a lengthy, expensive court process to secure a conservatorship for the incapacitated partner, so the other can legally manage the entire property. If one joint owner dies, even if there is a Will or Trust passing his or her ownership share to someone else, the other joint owner automatically becomes full owner of the property. Wills and Trusts have no control over property owned in joint tenancy. There may be tax consequences for transferring property into joint tenancy. Adding a joint tenant to your bank account or house title is a gift, subject to your annual gift exemption of $14,000.00. If over that amount, you may owe taxes on the gift, depending on your financial situation. Do-it-yourself estate planning rarely works, and simple tools like joint tenancy are very risky. Too often someone is left crying the blues. There are far better ways for couples to manage their assets, and most of them can be easily obtained with a little planning ahead and the good advice of your attorney. Modernism Dialed In
By Dr. Kenneth Toth, BA, MAT, DC, RN, CPT
Now that everyone is busy making good on all their New Year’s resolutions, with the muscles budding and the fat fading (right?), we can all look forward to our annual celebration of Modernism in the desert for which Palm Springs is famous! The clean lines, the glass, the simplicity, the geometry! I know a couple who have impeccably dialed in a fabulous midcentury house that is truly timeless! It could have been designed, built, landscaped and decorated yesterday, or fifty years ago, and no one can tell. It is truly timeless! It is beautiful! While we’re holding that easy-to-feel picture in our minds, let’s consider for a moment how it can translate into the need for a healthy, supportive, and beautiful body. Really, this is not a stretch! First, many of us are at least chronologically approaching, or have even exceeded, midcentury status. At this point in life, most people need to be dialed in, if not completely remodeled, in order to enjoy a high quality life for the rest of the ride. This brings to mind one of my very special clients who will here remain anonymous, but who is very real and dear to me. For purposes of this conversation, let’s call him Max. Max sought out my services as a personal trainer strictly because of my unique experience and credentials. He had reached a point in life where he knew he was faced with a life programming “if statement”. He told me at our first meeting that he had resolved that it was “now or never”….to either get back into an appropriate, supervised training program, or to “retire” into more and more physical inactivity and unattractiveness like the majority of his social circle. He chose improved health and greater physical attractiveness. In essence, Max made the commitment to dial in his biological “house”, to modernize it, to bring it up to speed again where it used to be. He is, once again, much happier living in his body. It now gives him greater inner peace, comfort, and joy! Not unlike the proud owner of a fabulous mid-century home, he is uniquely proud of his body! His posture is that of a thirty-year-old. He can once again buy, and wear with pride, new sleeveless “muscle shirts” and increasingly fashionable shorter-than-board shorts because he’s earned the privilege. The compliments just keep coming! He has celebrated his new spirit of life’s enjoyments by donating his oncefabulous Tommy B. shirts to a thrift store. He no longer needs them, if you know what I mean. In short, Max has once again taken charge of his picture of health. He now feels a greater motivation to take his physicianprescribed medications exactly as directed. Max told me recently that his cardiologist was beaming during his last office visit while

reviewing his last, extensive laboratory report! He asked Max what he was doing differently. Max told him. Needless to say, his physician was delighted with his progress and told him be sure to keep on doing what he’s doing. As one meanders along any of the quaint streets and byways of Palm Springs, there are still quite a few once-beautiful, mid-centuries that are in dire need of a sprucing up or even a downright makeover. All they need is an owner who has the vision to see what once was, as well as what can be once again. All that is needed is love and determination. A house’s inhabitant needs to love the house in which he lives in order to resolve to take the best care of it. Max continues to love and enjoy his already beautiful midcentury home even more these days, because he has once again learned to really love and maintain, and truly enjoy, his healthier and much more attractive physical body! Dr. Kenneth Toth, BA, MAT, DC, RN, CPT, holds multiple degrees and credentials as a science educator, chiropractor, registered nurse, and personal trainer. He is currently limiting his professional activities to Personal Training/Nutritional Coaching. Dr. Ken is now accepting new clients at WorkOUT Gym, Palm Springs, CA for personal training along with nutritional coaching. Reach him at 949-235-9408 or by email at ken@KenTothFitness.com.

GOOD HEAlTH AND FITNESS IS A CHOICE By Dennis Mason, B.F.A., C.P.T. It is always amazing to me how many people allow their mind to believe that all the ailments and changes that occur as we age are inevitably part of “the way it is.” Examples would be gaining excess body fat, losing muscle tone, getting high blood pressure and heart disease, becoming arthritic, etc. However, we know from scientific research that those issues are not necessarily the way it has to be. Proper nutrition, sensible exercise, and stress reduction are among some of the things we can do right now to slow down the aging process and be graceful about it. See, for the most part, your good health and fitness is actually a CHOICE...like keeping your home in good repair. For some people, just the mention of the word fitness brings about a cold sweat. Very often that reaction is based on information given to us on television, in magazines or by other types of mass media. The message generally portrayed to us is that fitness belongs to the young. Just take a moment to reflect on the types of characters found on the daily soaps and prime time features. How about the images on the front cover of the local publications or the models used in the advertisements within? Rarely do we see mature adults in these roles. The conclusion can then be made that staying fit is not for those over fifty. The truth is, fitness is for all ages. Moreover, it is absolutely essential for the well-being of the mature adult to stay in shape. Over the years your body undergoes a wide variety of changes and compensations. Some may require special needs and attention to help us slow down the aging and degeneration process. Some examples might include: physiological changes that affect balance and coordination, muscle atrophy, high blood pressure, heart/lung disease, bone or joint disorders, arthritis, or even previous injuries and/or surgeries. It is paramount then, that a person keep his or her body healthy, toned, and in the best possible working order. That doesn’t mean you can do all the things you used to do at a younger age. It simply means doing the absolute best you can at every age. Over the past thirty years as a professional trainer I have been able to successfully design age appropriate exercise programs that incorporate the special needs of an individual. However, the single most difficult roadblock to staying fit is lack of inspiration. Here’s where the old sayings “mind over matter” and “healthy body, healthy mind” take on new dimensions. Comedian George Burns once commented on the fact that “you don’t have to grow old as you
get older.” You can choose to prove that poor health and increasing lack of fitness does not have to be expected as you age. In fact, staying healthy and in shape is a form of health insurance...on the ‘front line.’ The old adage “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is especially true in this case. Those of us active professionals in the fitness industry have seen the benefits of regular exercise and an active lifestyle at any given age. Medical reports of clinical fitness trials and tests agree. Simply put, staying fit by exercising regularly, following a sensible meal plan, and getting plenty of rest can stimulate new bone growth, condition and strengthen the heart, remove toxins from the body, improve mental alertness, drop body fat, strengthen muscles, help lower stress and cholesterol levels, and increase a feeling of wellbeing at any age. An active lifestyle truly is the legendary “Fountain of Youth.” While we cannot completely eliminate the risks of certain illnesses or diseases, many ailments can be lessened or prevented. It’s never too late to get in shape. Stop making excuses. Start TODAY. Good Health and Fitness Is A Choice. FAST FOOD FAUX PAS by Linda Bergersen, MS Board Certified Nutrition Consultant®
As a nutritionist, I want to make a challenge to all fast-food restaurants. As we see McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Subway and the like adding and changing menu items to reflect better nutrition, it’s evident that there is a belief that foods we eat are not making us healthy. The momentum is building for healthier restaurant menus, but not building fast enough. Unfortunately they follow the guidelines of the media, jumping on what the media hypes, and not nutrition specialists. We’ve seen New York City, beginning in 2007, ban the use of trans fat in restaurants, and many fast-food chains have already started taking trans fat out of their cooking oils. They’ve added a variety of salads; oatmeal and yogurt parfaits for breakfast; we see sweet potatoes added. This is all positive, except sugars are still being added to items that really do not need added sugars. And beyond this, foods may contain additives like propylene glycol or MSG. In the past, some chains tried the low-fat burgers and pizza and such, and they failed. But, fat isn’t necessarily the answer anyway. The concentration of making items healthier seems to be in the wrong places. It’s not so much the burger, but more importantly the bun! Buns are loaded with hydrogenated oils, sugars and refined flour. Some restaurants may say they are offering whole-wheat bread, but let’s get serious. It’s not whole wheat. The federal law allows the manufacturers of whole wheat products to include up to 49 percent of the flour to be refined non-whole-wheat flour. The words “100 percent” must be on the package if it is indeed completely whole wheat. And you can be assured that most restaurants are not going to put out the extra money to go all the way to offer 100 percent. So as long as they can fool the public, they will get away with continuing to offer their version of whole-wheat bread. We now have options of nice salads, but the salad dressings are full of sugars, high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils and who knows what else. Smoothies are everywhere now, but are they really healthy? No. Their conception of a smoothie is no way near what healthy means. The fast-food smoothie will most likely be full of refined sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. Some don’t even use real fruit, just syrups, artificial dyes and extracts. And to begin with, even if they use fruit juices, it’s not realized that fruit juice is just another refined food that inflames the arteries.
32 theStandardps.com
Even the eggs may not be the real thing. They may be irradiated (exposed to radiation for liability reasons), pasteurized or liquid processed eggs that may contain gluten, artificial flavor, cornstarch, milk product, or soy oil. Recently, it was in the news that many fast-food establishments serve ground meat that is not 100-percent meat, but rather could contain only between 30- and 80-percent real meat. And it was revealed that chicken nuggets could contain all kinds of additives, including dimethylpolysiloxane, an anti-foaming agent used in Silly Putty. Some of the most important information needed to know about the proliferation of refined foods can be found in my book, So, You Think You Eat Healthy?. Refined foods are the main reasons for our rise in obesity and diabetes, and all the toxic additives cannot be good for our health. So, here is the challenge for you, fast-food business owners. Get educated, and begin to offer items geared toward the segment of the population who want to eat healthy and already doing so. But also, there is another percentage of fast-food patrons who just might be tempted to pick the 100-percent whole-wheat bun or tortilla, or the meat without fillers, or the salad dressing without hydrogenated oil and sugar. Of course, the public has no way of knowing what other hidden things lurk inside your foods, but at least we can start with a few better choices, and hopefully have your determination to someday serve wholesome foods that pose little threat to our health.

aSk tHe doCtor Question: I am 67 years old. When my husband retired, we moved to Palm springs. after we moved here, I have developed problems with dry eyes. I have tried over the counter artificial tears with some relief but am still aware of a problem with my eyes especially lately. Is there anything else that I can do? do I need to see an ophthalmologist? Betty R., Rancho Mirage, CA answer: yes, Betty, there are a number of things that you can do to alleviate your dry eyes. I am sure you are aware that humidity levels during the day around the Coachella Valley are less than 10%, often around 5%. this causes the natural tears that you make to evaporate more quickly. You might consider adding a cool air humidifier to your home especially in the room that you spend most of your time. this will give you great relief. In addition, most of us spend a lot of time reading or staring at a monitor of some type. make sure that you take ‘quiet eye’ breaks every 15 minutes and close your eyes for 1-2 minutes. Add Fish Oil or Flaxseed Oil if you have fish oil reflux to your diet or vitamin regimen. Find a non-preserved artificial tear that feels good. In addition, you should consultant your doctor regarding prescription dry eye medications if the problem becomes worse. Question: a friend who recently had cataract surgery told me that I would most likely develop cataracts because I live in the desert. Is this true? I do know quite a few peers who have had this

surgery and I’m worried about my vision deteriorating. Can you give me some advice? Paul M., Palm Springs, CA answer: Paul, as we age, we are more likely to develop cataracts. heredity places a major role in the propensity to develop cataracts so if your parents had cataracts, you are more likely to develop them. the increased ultraviolet light of the desert may place you at slightly greater risk. Wear sunglasses outside at all times, even on cloudy days, to cut out the uV light. our corneas absorb 97% of the UV light in the first place and the glasses will do the rest. Cataracts can slowly take the clarity of vision from you, but once you identify this as the problem, it is completely reversible and curable. Cataract surgery is the #1 outpatient surgery performed in the us. and, in my practice and experience, almost everyone is thrilled with the results!

Romance Your Love
Out on Valentine’s Day by George Zander
Times are changing and LGBT romantic holidays have jumped out of the closet into the mainstream. Valentine’s Day is for everyone. It’s no wonder that tourism agencies are reaching out to the LGBT community. You can throw away those dusty copies of the secret gay spots to visit. The gay spots are everyone’s places now!! Honeymoons and lovely Valentine’s Escape vacations have become a $12 billion industry in America. The historic Supreme Court overturning of DOMA in June 2013 coincided with simultaneous gay marriage victories in France, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, Brazil, and many other places; creating a boom of honeymoon spending among this pink dual-income, no-kids demographic. There’s also been a sea change in where gays travel; gayowned hotels and traditional gay destinations are no longer the primary draw. Places like Wales, Uruguay, and Bora-Bora are all beautiful and rarefied and now also offer gay marriage and antidiscrimination laws that can put same-sex couples at ease. After all, LGBT honeymooners want to be able to hold hands or exchange a kiss on the beach like everyone else. Rest assured many parts of the United States and rural parts of the world are not “LGBT friendly, but the growth of these places is a very encouraging sign. We of course live in one of the most LGBT friendly spots on earth-the Coachella Valley, but travel to others is
34 theStandardps.com
essential for everyone. Let’s begin with some major travel for you and your honey. French Polynesia. This honeymoon favorite delivers, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity, thanks to a winning tradition of soft white-sand beaches, and some of the world’s sexiest hotels. At Le Méridien Bora Bora, overwater bungalows feature glass floors to reveal the marine life below while windows face Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, the island’s iconic post card perfect volcanoes. Since its motherland France passed marriage equality in June 2013, French Polynesia has granted LGBT travelers full protection status; same-sex marriage is recognized and performed here. Closer to home, the top romantic Valentine’s out of town spot is Santa Barbara. A wonderful coastal climate, great food, beautiful beaches and lower rates in the winter are all a draw. California helped make major legal strides at the federal level so one can celebrate here at home. Four driving hours away. Consider Santa Barbara, a wine lover’s paradise along the central coast and setting for El Encanto, an exquisitely renovated Orient-Express property atop the city’s Riviera Hill. Romantic Craftsman bungalows are fitted with fireplaces, fluffy beds, and private porches, while a full-service spa specializes in couples’ treatments like lemon-basil body scrubs. More active types can use electric bikes to explore Santa Barbara’s
winery-packed Funk Zone, or arrange snorkeling in the nearby Channel Islands. Leaving Paris out of a list like this world be sinful, so yes, Paris would be romance destination number one as it has been for centuries. France passed gay marriage in 2013, and there’s no better place to celebrate than Gay Paree, where romance is taken as seriously as the food, wine, and art. If that weren’t enough, the thriving gay nightlife and fashion scene keep this city’s pulse positively electrically rainbow. After a night out, retreat to the intimate Hotel de Nell, in the Ninth Arrondissement on a quiet street near Montmartre. This features sexy Japanese tubs made of marble and Oregon myrtle. Back to a driving escape, there is San Diego. Specifically, the Del Coronado Hotel is classic early 20th Century romance. A lovely room, long walks on the beach and San Diego’s lively party atmosphere is a perfect romantic getaway. For a moonlight dinner and a stroll with waterside views of San Diego’s lights, dine at the Bali Hai on Shelter Island. But make those reservations soon. And even closer to home in the Mission Inn in Riverside. The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa has four restaurants on site. Room service is available. This beautiful in absolutely oozes special memories. The rooms are delightful and the service is perfect. It is a very romantic spot. Of course romance is enhanced by travel, and now that our LGBT community is far more comfortable in most locations than ever before in our history. take the plunge and travel out!!

Recipes for Romance
A little thought, A little imagination, and a lot of love By Chef Andre Carthen
We all know that roses and chocolates have always symbolized romance. While traditional favorites are great for Birthdays and Christmas, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time for a little nontraditional imagination. Here are a few ways to re-invent the art of Romance:
(http://www.organicbouquet.com/c_631/Kathy-IrelandDesigns/Gifts.html ) Food: Make it fun; give it a twist. The most importance thing to remember is don’t pressure yourself! You don’t have to do it all and it doesn’t have to be prefect.
Flowers: All women love flowers, from one single perfect stem to a dozen. And yes men like them too, although they won’t admit it. Instead of a dozen long stem roses, why not try smaller bunches of spring flowers. (Think wedding bouquet, but smaller and all the same flower). Tulips, gerberas, lilies, hyacinths and even roses make great bouquets. These can be placed around the house, sent to the office or hand delivered.
If you have children, I know you’re thinking “romantic dinner at home, yeah right!” Start by planning ahead. Feed the children a little earlier and get them settled for the evening. Call ahead to your favorite restaurant and order your favorites to go, and then create a romantic setting at home. Whether it’s a beautifully set table or a picnic on the living room floor, remember some small details can enhance the mood. Music and candlelight are a must. I like Sinatra, Barry White, Tony Bennett, and Diana Krall to name a few.
A great way to start the day is to place a single flower on the car seat of the person you love. This is sure to give them a warm fuzzy feeling all day. Place the flower the night before. In most places, it’s still cool enough for the flower to last until morning. Adding a small note will make it that much more special. Just remember to order early I suggest Organic Bouquet.
Now, if you want to splurge a little on your romantic dinner and make it really special, try a little thing I like to call Cater Waiter. Again, your favorite restaurant, your favorite food, but this time you hire your favorite server. Talk about romance! Your own private waiter seeing to your every need all you do is choose the menu and the server will take care of the rest. From pick up to clean up. Your home,

Sweet Endings – a tray of fresh sweet strawberries, melted chocolate, powdered sugar, and champagne are always a way to end the evening…in the bedroom! Now that I’ve set the mood, the rest is up to you! If you decide you want to cook something special, remember it doesn’t have to be complicated to be impressive. As with this menu. Signature Cocktail – Chocolate Martini Strawberry/Spinach Salad Lasagna Roll-Ups (a twist on an old favorite; looks impressive without the fuss.) Pears avec Chocolait (It’s easier than it sounds and the great thing is you can use different flavored chocolate.) Chocolate Martini 2 ½ oz. vanilla Vodka
½ oz. Chocolate liqueur Mixing instructions: Combine ingredients in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into chilled martini glass. Enjoy Responsibly! Pears avec Chocolait ¾-cup sugar 4 cups water Juice of 1 large orange 2 cinnamon sticks 4 cloves 2 tbsp. bandy 2 firm Anjou or Comice pears, stems left intact 4oz. unsweetened chocolate, broken into small piece. 2oz. semi-sweet chocolate, broken into small pieces or 1 (12oz.) bag semi-sweet chocolate chips ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter Fresh mint sprigs, for garnish In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar, water, and cook, stirring for, about 3 minutes, until the sugar has dissolved. Stir in the orange juice, cinnamon, cloves and brandy, simmer, covered, for 10 to 15 minutes. Peel the pears and trim the bottoms so that they stand upright. Place the pears in the syrup and poach until tender, 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the ripeness of the pears (test with a toothpick). Allow the pears to cool in the syrup, then chill thoroughly, preferably overnight. Place both chocolates in the top of a double boiler set over simmering water. Add the butter and stir until melted and smooth. Remove from the heat. Remove the pears from the syrup and gently pat dry. Dip the pears into the melted chocolate and coat evenly, using a spoon if necessary. Lift the pears to drain off the excess chocolate. Arrange on a serving dish and garnish with mint. (The pears will keep in the refrigerator for up to 36 hours. Allow to come to room temperature before serving). Serves 2

From Inside The Boudoir Happiness and Beauty from the Inside Out by Stephanie Brooke Smith
Your body is your temple, so they say. So why not worship at its altar? All of our bodies are beautiful in their own unique way-never forget that! Now, my questions is: why should any of us waste even a moment of our precious and limited time worrying and obsessing about trying to change our bodies to conform to the superficial, social norm that is considered “physical beauty and attractiveness.” The answer: we shouldn’t! Life is too short to waste even a moment not being your happiest self. It’s just like John Lennon’s story of one of his childhood memories: “When I was five years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up-I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment and I told them they didn’t understand life.” As a child, John Lennon knew what was most important in life. As adults, I am confident that we can learn the same valuable lesson and apply it to our own lives. The best thing about being happy with yourself and being comfortable in your own skin is that it is up to you and unique to you as well. No two people will need the same things to make them happy with themselves. We each have to figure these things out for ourselves and implement them to the best of our abilities. Being happy with our bodies can come about in a variety of different ways. Some of us go on one of the many fad diets that we have heard about, begin exercise routines, we change our hair, buy new clothes, or present ourselves in a different way to showcase our bodies in the best way we can. According to the group of ladies that I am currently working with, the most popular ways that they promote their own positive body image are by wearing tight jeans that hug their curves, dressing nicer than average, styling their hair, and wearing makeup. All of these are manipulations of our physical attributes, but have nothing to do with physical health; only what is considered to be “physical beauty” based on what mainstream society tells us every day. Interesting enough, a healthy diet and exercise routine were not part of the way these women thought to promote a positive body image for themselves. They connected diet and exercise to personal health rather than physical beauty. Even though these are all ways to help us promote a positive image for ourselves and other women, it is important to remember
38 theStandardps.com
that health has a lot to do with being happy with ourselves and the way we perceive our own bodies as being beautiful. When we feel great on the inside, it emanates through our skin and is then visible on the outside. We can literally shine from the inside out when we are healthy because health really is beauty. And when we are healthy and feel beautiful, there is nothing that can hold us back from going after what will make us our happiest self. So, my beautiful ladies, are you ready to be happy?
