commentarY White party at 25 I’m excited, honored and humbled that White Party turns 25 this year. When I think back to its beginning, which was originally a weekend getaway for about 300, I can’t help but realize how far we, the lGbt community, have come since then.

In the early years, it wasn’t uncommon to have patrons attending White Party in secrecy, fearful they’d be fired if their employers discovered they attended a “gay event.” this was especially true for members of our military. they avoided having photos taken or even their names being known.

But fortunately in today’s world of selfies and Instagram, that fear has all but vanished and our rights are much more protected.

Back in the days of the late 20th Century, openly gay politicians and city officials were few and far between. Since then, we now have openly gay elected officials attending White Party as guests and we also welcome straight politicians who openly support the rights of the lGbt community.

When White Party first began, the notion of a “white wedding” seemed improbable to most gay couples. Now, after a tedious struggle, gay marriage is permanently legal here in California and couples who first met at White Party are attending this year legally married!

Jeffrey Sanker is the founder of LA-based White Party Entertainment, Inc. and creator of such signature events as WHITE PARTY PALM SPRINGS, New Year’s Eve celebrations in Los Angeles, Miami & Rio de Janeiro and the One Mighty Party at Orlando’s Gay Days.

Sanker has been credited by the MIAMI HERALD as being “the father of the modern gay event party.” Nowhere is this more evident than with Sanker’s trademark extravaganza: White Party Palm Springs, which has evolved into the nation’s largest gay dance music festival, attracting more than 30,000 attendees from every corner of the globe.

Sanker’s passion for parties began during the early eighties in New York City. Working at such legendary locations as Studio 54, Palladium and Private Eyes, he fine-tuned his skills as a promoter and special event producer. He has hosted parties for numerous celebrities over the years.

Sanker moved to Los Angeles in 1987. His innovative technique of using landmark venues for trend-setting themed events was credited for breathing new life into the Los Angeles scene. Since then, he has worked with all of the hottest and trendiest venues and nightclubs in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Miami.

Superstar entertainment has become a hallmark of Sanker events. Lady Gaga, Anastasia, Tony Braxton, Deborah Cox, Boy George, Grace Jones, Jennifer Lopez, Kelis, Ke$ha and Kim Zolciak, have all graced the stage at Sanker events. Other the years, Jeffrey has also helped launch the careers of hundreds of new and up & coming performers.

World-class DJs reign supreme over Sanker’s packed dancefloors as well. His events feature high caliber DJs/producers, including: Dave Aude, Peter Rauhofer, Junior Vasquez, Victor Calderone, Freemasons, Manny Lehman, Rosabel and Tony Moran.

Adding another accolade to Jeffrey’s vast list of accolades, will be when The Palm Springs Walk of Stars honors him with the 364th Golden Palm Star on The Palm Springs Walk of Stars during a star dedication ceremony on Thursday March 13, 2014 at 1pm in advance of his WHITE PARTY 25th Anniversary. The star dedication ceremony will take place at 200 South Palm Canyon Drive (in front of LuLu California Bistro). Singer Carmen Electra and former Mayor Ron Oden are two of the special guest speakers. . “We are very proud to honor Jeffrey Sanker with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars,” added Bob Alexander, President of the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.

Boots, Buckles & Bears TBRU 19 “Cowboys and Bears”

Ready or not Dallas, here they come! A “Party with a Purpose” that donates thousands of dollars to deserving local charities; that’s what the Texas Bear Round-Up is all about. Through the help of priceless volunteers, generous donations and willful sponsors, this celebration of bear brotherhood takes place every year to the joy and thrill of those in attendance.

We spoke with Wayne Davis, President Dallas Bears/TBRU and asked what we can expect from this year’s event as bears, cubs and admirers unite for a great weekend of Texas sized hospitality.

Wayne, congrats on going into the 19th year of this great event. For those not familiar with Texas Bear Round-Up what exactly is TBRU? TBRU is a Big ol’ Bear Family Reunion. Bears, Cubs, Admirers and more gather in Dallas in March every year for a weekend of fun and frolic. One of our favorite parts and the comments we receive is that guys get to see people from all over the world and sometimes it is there once a year time they see each other - so it truly feels like a family reunion. There are lots of events from games, entertainment, food, city excursions and spa excursions and more.

Why do you think that out of all the Bear Events in the Nation, this one is one of the most popular?

I hope it is because they have fun and enjoy the events we host.

We try our best to provide good ol’ Southern Hospitality. We work all year to plan a fun event and we strive to keep costs to both our Guests and our event as low as possible. Compared to what we offer and other event fees out there we see we offer a low cost event with high expectations for lots of food, entertainment and fun. We partner with local hotels to also make sure we offer an affordable price for lodging as well. I know the guys love our Texas Sized Hospitality Suite... it’s the full ballroom at the Crowne Plaza hotel. We also offer transportation all weekend long to all of our events, which is our largest expense.

I am afraid to tell you what that costs - but it is greater than my annual salary at my job (Laughs). We put a great emphasis on our generous shuttle service as a matter of safety and hospitality. We also

How did the event get its start?

That is a good question. We do not have many founding Bears still with us, but I understand that the first TBRU was held during the first year of the club over 19 years ago. It was certainly much smaller then

I know that it is not all about the parties but you also are doing this for some worthy causes. Can you tell us about that?

TBRU is a “Party with a Purpose!” We have a great time with all the events and all the sights but for the members of the Dallas Bears this is also a time that we raise funds for local charities. Have fun while doing some good - all at the same time.

try to entertain everyone. We are excited to have Paul J. Williams returning as sister helen holy for our famous bingo games and this year we have gay country and western singer Drake Jensen providing a concert at the saturday night dinner. this year’s theme is Cowboys and bears, how do you come up with the themes each year and who decides on the winner. our members nominate themes each year and the list gets big.

We vote on the floor and narrow it down to about five and then we take a blind vote. the results are only known by one member and our artist (I think that member’s dog knows the results). Then we find out the upcoming theme at our sunday Closing Ceremonies. as soon as I open up the envelope is when I know the theme and then I announce it to everyone. I have a feeling the theme for tbru 20 in 2015 is going to be close between two of the nominated themes.

What can attendees expect from this year’s events and are there any new things in store?

We have worked hard to improve our transportation shuttles and this year we have color-coded and numbered the routes. We are so excited to have Drake Jensen from Canada coming to sing for us. this handsome man sure can sing! Naughty bear bingo is a new event that bobby and I have hosted for leather runs and we are going to try it with the bears. It is a fusion between bingo and strip Poker. I think the fur is gonna fly! We have some awesome prizes in our charity raffle and I know that this year’s BearDance will once again be spectacularly fabulous. there are lots of events to choose from whether it is our numerous pool parties, a new city excursion to a local beer brewery, shopping options or sharing a meal together.

We try to offer lots of opportunities for everyone to meet new folks and make lasting friendships. With current events going on in texas

We usually have guys from at least 48 states, and also from other us territories and last year 16 additional countries. Five questions with TBRU headliner country singer Drake Jensen Headlining at this year’s Texas Bear Round-up is Canada’s own Drake Jensen who is a unique figure in the world of country music: a voice for the LGBT community who speaks through his music. A good ol’ country boy whose music makes us smile and reflect that music is not about being Gay or straight but about sharing a common language.

He has found a way for fans to rediscover country music by touching the heart and soul of listeners through his voice that tells not only the stories, but conveys deep, sincere emotions. Drake is leading the way in bringing LGBT fans back to listening to country music. Recently we sat down with Drake and discovered how truly down to earth he really is.

For those who are not familiar with your music; tell us who is Drake Jensen.?

Drake Jensen is an artist, an activist and a humanitarian. He is very passionate about justice, equality and love; and believes that he can communicate that passion through his music.

How does it feel to be an openly Gay singer in a genre of music that has been historically unaccepting of our community?

In addition, do you consider yourself a role model?

I don’t consider myself a gay singer. I consider myself an artist who happens to be gay, creating music for an audience who wants to listen. I don’t consider myself a role model, but rather see myself as having a social responsibility to lead the way by setting a good example.

What are some of the highlights (and lowlights, if any) you have faced in your career thus far?

My first single “Wash Me Away” was reviewed by Robert K Oermann of Music Row Magazine in Nashville, one of the leading authorities on Country Music. I was featured alongside Kellie Pickler and received the DISCovery award.

- The video for the title track “On My Way to Finding You” was how I came out publicly in 2012, and was featured by Andy Towle of Towleroad. Later he named me in the Top 50 comings out of the year.

- Montreal’s Foundation Emergence, whose mission is to fight homophobia, gave me a “Hats Off “award. In previous years, they awarded it to Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin - Performing at the Hard Rock Cafe in Nashville for Nashville Pride in 2013

- With the first album, we charted in the Top 20 in France and #17 on the European Country Music Association charts.

What or who inspires you to write your music?

I don’t write everything that I sing, but I’m inspired by personal experiences and world issues.

We are all excited that you will be headlining Texas Bear Round-up 19. What do you have in store for us?

One of my goals when I started on this journey was to perform in Texas, and going to TBRU is making that goal a reality. I love to interact with the audience when I perform live, and my shows have been compared to an “East Coast Kitchen Party”, surrounded by great friends and family. People have been known to get up and dance during my shows. I’ll be performing tracks from my two albums, and there might be a few surprises thrown in.

All You Need to Know About The Dinah Shore Weekend 2014

In a little less than a month from now, the largest, and most well-known lesbian events in the world is coming for its 24th annual festivities in Palm Springs! Yep, you guessed it: The Dinah Shore Weekend, presented by Club Skirts, is here once again ladies! This event, April 2 through the 6th, is 5 days of nonstop celebration that includes performances by top recording artists, sporting events, pool parties, and a variety of other fun and exciting entertainment. Somewhere in the midst of all of these festive activities, is the chance to make multiple social connections, make new friends, run into some familiar faces, and maybe even fall head over heels in love with one of the many lovely ladies that will be out celebrating right alongside you.

Hey don’t think this can’t happen because love is an unstoppable force of nature and with a city full of lesbians, it can’t be stopped. My advice to you: lay back and let it all in ladies, have fun at all of the events, but don’t forget

by Fortune Feimster from “Chelsea Lately” on E! alongside the British comedian Gina Yashere that you all probably saw on Last Comic Standing. These two comics will be joined by stand-up comedian Erin Foley.

You are guaranteed to have a great night full of laughter and good times. The Dinah Opening Party kicks off Thursday evening at Zeldaz Nightclub with music by the masterful DJ ILL G. To keep the party going, we’ve got the TGIDF (Thank God It’s Dinah Friday) Pool Party! There will be a live performance by R&B artist Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King and a live Sirius XM Radio broadcast that is bound to keep you dancing away the afternoon with all the sexy ladies in their little bikinis.

Michael Lucas Undresses Israel

When many people think of Israel, it is often in terms of modern war or ancient religion. But there is much more to the Jewish state than missiles and prayers.

In Undressing Israel, gay porn auteur Michael Lucas and Israeli director Yariv Mozer examine a side of the Holy Land that is largely overlooked: its thriving gay community.

The film spotlights a diverse range of local men, including a gay member of Israel’s parliament, a trainer who served openly in the army, a young Arab-Israeli journalist, and a pair of fathers raising their children.

Michael Lucas also visits Tel Aviv’s vibrant nightlife scene and even attends a same-sex wedding in this guided tour of a country that has emerged as a pioneer for gay integration and equality.

Why is it important for you to introduce people to gay Israel?

Michael Lucas: When Israel makes news, it is usually in the context of terrorism or occupation. Israel is often cast as an oppressor and people who know little about the Middle East come away with the idea that it is an intolerant place that is only supported by those on the political right. Israel is actually the most liberal country in the area by far, and its very impressive record on gay-rights issues is a clear illustration of that. The gay lives that are shown in Undressing Israel do not exist in any of Israel’s Muslim neighbors.

What surprises viewers most in the film?

The variety and openness of Israel’s gay community, and how comfortably it is integrated into the rest of Israeli society.

How do most Israelis view homosexuality?

As tolerantly as Americans do—probably more so, overall.

How does Israel compare with the USA in the battle for gay equality?

Israel is considerably ahead of America in many important ways.

For example, Israel’s parliament repealed prohibitions against sodomy in 1988, fifteen years before the American Supreme Court did the same. Discrimination against gays in employment has been prohibited nationwide since 1992. Gay Israelis can adopt their partners’ children,

which is still illegal in many states. Gay people may sponsor their partners for immigration, which is not yet legal in America.

Are gay men allowed to serve openly in the military?

Yes, and they have been since 1993. Before the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, the Israeli military was often cited as an example for America to follow.

Where is Israel in terms of gay marriage?

Israelis are not as interested in achieving the word “marriage” as much as they are in the rights that it accords, particularly when it comes to having children. Although gay marriage does not exist in

Israel—because of opposition by the country’s still-powerful religious minority—the state effectively recognizes common-law marriage for same-sex couples, which gives them many financial and legal rights that we do not yet possess in America. (Israel does officially recognize gay marriages performed abroad.)

Is it true that Israel is experiencing a gayby boom?

Absolutely, yes. It’s a very family-oriented culture. Per capita, in fact, Israel has the highest number of children with gay parents in the world. I think that at least half of my gay Israeli friends have children.

What is like to be a transsexual in Israel?

Transsexuals face special challenges everywhere, but Israel is unusually accepting by international standards. One of the biggest celebrities in Israel is Dana International: a beautiful, openly transsexual pop singer who is widely loved by Israelis. In 1998, she was selected to represent Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest, a hugely popular annual competition held among many of the active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union. She won.

How does Israel’s nightlife compare to that of the USA? It varies from city to city, but Tel Aviv’s club scene is comparable to Los Angeles. It has clubs, bars, discos, gay beaches and a huge Gay Pride parade.

Is Israel safe?

Yes. In 2002, Israel began construction on the West Bank Barrier, which the government said was essential to prevent would-be suicide bombers from entering Israel and attacking civilians. This concretebased wall has indeed stopped suicide bombings and other attacks.

And Israel proper is not a violent place. The rate of gun-related death there is less than one-fifth of what it is in the United States.

What can the USA learn from Israel?

Where gay rights are concerned, it is best to adopt a national policy rather than defer, as the USA too often does, to “state’srights” arguments that effectively create large regions of secondclass citizenry.

What can Israel learn from the USA? The momentum for full marriage equality in America has grown stronger, and more quickly, than even most gay activists had hoped.

It would be nice to see more movement in that direction in Israel, even if the common-law system already gives gay couples many of marriage’s practical benefits.

What’s the overall message of Undressing Israel?

I would like for people to take away a greater understanding of how progressive and tolerant Israel really is. People sometimes ask why we should care about Israel. This is why: because Israel shares our core values. And in some areas—like gay rights—it can even help inspire us to live up to those values a little better.

Michael Rall A good friend of The Standard, Michael Rall, died on Sunday, February 16, 2014. He was one day short of his 56th birthday and had lived in Palm Springs for the past 12 years after moving from San Francisco. Mike was a long-term HIV/AIDS survivor, but became an example of what can happen over years of living with the virus. His health had declined recently from various illnesses and chronic conditions resulting from HIV and side-effects of medications.

Although he lived quietly, he had done volunteer work at the airport and the local Buddhist temple. He was also a regular at Koffi North and will be greatly missed there. He is survived by his mother Betty, brother Stephen and his best friends Steve Bolerjack and Serenella Leoni, and many loving friends. He’ll be remembered as one of the kindest and gentlest person many of us have known. A memorial service is being planned for later this month and friends will be notified when finalized.

Riding the Rainbow Rollercoaster

There are thrills and chills at the amusement park - the rides are fun and scary, intense, from the plunge of the Turbo Drop to the wild ride on Millennium Force. Everyone is out for a mad adventure, and comes away with dazzled eyes and tales of peril and survival.

It often seems that the LGBT community lives in that adventure park - we are definitely on a madcap rollercoaster of legal issues that guarantee to keep us in suspense, with a thrill or a chill every minute of the way. However, there is nothing amusing about the ordeal and we aren’t doing it for kicks, we charge ahead because equality is the challenge of our ride through life, and we are determined to make it happen.

This past year, we shouted with joy as sections of federal DOMA rules were found unconstitutional and same-sex and straight married couples finally became equal under most of federal law. We were ecstatic, as California’s Proposition 8, banning same-sex marriage

was overturned. And we pledged to continue and renew our efforts to enact laws that protect and provide equality for every member of the LGBT community. But there are setbacks, and new attacks that unnerve us and send shivers down our spines.

Here are a few of the latest ups and downs: All California students will be treated equally under the new School Success and Opportunity Act, which corrects problems of discrimination and exclusion of transgender students from school programs and activities. But the law was immediately attacked by opponents of equality, who tried to place a referendum on the November 2014 ballot to overturn it. Fortunately, the number of signatures submitted failed to qualify it for a vote.

California medical plans will now provide transgender benefits for all fully insured clients. The coverage is subject to the conditions

that apply to all other types of medical benefits, such as medical necessity and exclusions for cosmetic service. Included in the benefits are medically necessary services related to gender transition, such as transgender surgery, hormone therapy, psychotherapy visits, and vocal training.

Louisiana’s Blue Cross Blue Shield medical plan has just been hit with a federal class action lawsuit because it refuses to accept federally funded premium subsidies that allow low-income residents living with HIV to purchase health insurance. It appears that the insurer is trying to freeze out large numbers of HIV sufferers, even though denial of coverage for pre-existing medical conditions is not permitted under the Affordable Care Act. Arizona’s state legislature just sent a discriminatory bill to the governor to allow a business owner, church or person asserting their religious beliefs to refuse service to gay or lesbian customers.

Wisely, the governor decided to veto it “as creating more problems than it … solves”. Similar laws have been proposed in Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Tennessee, without success so far.

Wyoming’s legislature has just defeated a bill to legalize samesex marriage in the state. But action continues in many other states, with strong prospects for equality success. Among them: - Courts in Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Nevada, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania have found or are considering the ban on recognition of same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional. By Dr. Kenneth Toth, BA, MAT, DC, RN, CPT It seems that everything you look at, listen to, or watch in today’s media has something to say about health, the lack of health, or whether you can afford to be eating healthful food choices. Add to that the infomercials disguised as news that are really trying to sell you some off-the-wall miracle herb or substance that will supposedly take the place of appropriate individualized exercise in order to lose fat.

What’s my point? I am simply saying that if one is going to take any new dietary information seriously (especially if one is going to take any personal dietary action based upon it), one must carefully read, critically analyze, question as necessary, and do further research independently in order to separate fact from fiction. There seems to be far too much so-called information or news out there, which is painted with a very broad brush, with generalities.

When one is dealing with health, generalities tend to get one into the nebulous realm of inaccuracies and misinformation as well as outright disinformation.

Are you sufficiently along the life continuum to remember when eggs and real butter, even in moderation, were totally demonized?

Remember when everything was about low fat or no fat? Or when severe carbohydrate restrictions were lauded to lose weight?

Eating healthily is not just a matter of eating organic or non-organic, in addition to other distinctions. It is a much larger conversation. For example, it must include such basic things as portion size, feeding times during the day, and serving ratios of fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

Then there are the possible individual food allergies, food intolerances, and medication requirements that preclude consuming certain foods while taking certain prescribed medications. Add to that such factors as the intensity level of the usual physical activity undertaken daily and how that may alter the ideal intake of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates for that particular individual.

Personalized excellent nutrition, as well as excellent health, is not a one-size-fits-all concept. Add to that the fact that you cannot have truly excellent health without excellent nutrition. We have all heard the person who brags that he eats whatever junk food he wants, drinks whatever he wants, who never exercises, and makes fun of those who take care of their health. What such a person has not yet experienced is when he reaches the breaking point when some subclinical pathology that has been “brewing” for years finally rears its ugly head and ends the party quite miserably.

When I accept a new personal training client who normally eats only a bowl of instant oatmeal at seven-thirty in the morning and nothing else, except for a few unnamed snacks until two in the afternoon, I have to get to work educating him about modifying

his eating plan. Stat, if we are going to be successful in creating a heightened level of health that will support a meaningful exercise program. You can’t drive your car very far with real performance if you don’t give it the right kind of fuel.

Again, when it comes to learning how to create better health, I think what really pays is to read/listen carefully, question everything with critical analysis, and then take a little time to do some good research on your own. Remember, you are always the last word on your personal health decisions.

UNDERTRAINING (vs) OVERTRAINING

By Dennis Mason, B.F.A., C.P.T. Did you ever notice how often you see one or more people at the gym every time you’re there? It’s like they never go home.

Very often they seem to work out the same muscles with each visit... like biceps or chest. What you usually don’t see is any significant muscular development. This could be a sign of Overtraining. On the other hand, if the workouts are too infrequent or not intense enough, it could be a symptom of Undertraining. So, how does a person know how much is too much or not enough?

One of the most important considerations when training your body is to listen to your own intuition or instincts. Your body is always telling you what’s up and what’s needed. That’s how we’re built.

However, this concept is hard for some people to grasp. It’s really simple, once you get the hang of it. Simply put, it’s all about you! It’s about how you feel (energetic, tired, etc.) as you begin your workout.

If you are feeling very vibrant and full of energy, it could indicate that your body is well rested, recuperated, fueled and ready for action. It would be a good day to perhaps raise the resistance on weights or increase speed and/or time on the elliptical machine.

There are many signs of Overtraining, but the following are among the more common ones. Your weight and strength levels have remained on a plateau for over a few months. You think about what you are going to do on your workout day, but when the time arrives you find yourself just wanting to stay home and sleep. You get diminished results from your workouts. Your dietary intake is fine but you still have low energy. You injure yourself more frequently than you used to. You really don’t have much motivation to get to the gym. These are the classic signs of Overtraining. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, take some time off from the gym. In fact, it’s a good idea to take a week off from intensive training about every three months.

As for how often to work out...it all depends on the individual.

Most people find that for good results, their body needs between 36 to 48 hours of rest before another workout. That’s because exercise taxes not only the individual muscles being worked, but the entire nervous system as well. Different muscles require different amounts of rest before they can be ‘back up to speed’ for another work out.

A good rule of thumb to follow is that the larger the muscle or group

is, the longer rest time it requires. The smaller the muscle, the less time is needed. For example, a heavy leg workout may require 4 to 6 days before the legs are fully recovered, whereas abdominals may require only 1 or 2 days. Of course all of this is relative to the individual and the intensity of the work out.

Undertraining is pretty much the opposite of Overtraining. I know a few people who go to the gym on a regular basis and generally follow the same routine for each body part time after time. They do the same number of sets and reps with the same weight in about the same amount of time week after week after week. I call this The Comfy Workout. If you want to build muscle, this style of training simply will not work. You must challenge your muscles to work a little harder than last time. By doing so, muscle fiber will be torn down then grow back a little stronger and larger.

ASK THE DOCTOR Question: Dr. Murphy, as spring approaches, I am expecting my usual bout with allergies. I always become congested in my nose, my eyes become watery and itchy when the pollen counts are high, and they look puffier to me. They seem to be worse in the desert than at the coast, but they are bad in the spring regardless of my location. What can I do to eliminate this springtime annoyance?

Tony V., Palm Springs, CA Answer: Tony, you are not alone. Many people suffer from springtime allergies. Pollen airborne allergies become a problem for humans and animals when the spring arrives and the flowers and trees begin to bloom. When the wind blows, it allows for the rapid spread of the ‘pollen’ that can cause all of your symptoms. The severity can vary year to year, and the symptoms can range from annoying to debilitating. Unfortunately, remediation from your allergies, not a cure, is possible. Replace your air filters in both your house and car. Find an oral OTC (over the counter) allergy medication and start the medication in early March and continue through the entire spring season. Antiallergy eye drops are available from your ophthalmologist if the puffy, itchy eyes continue to plaque you. Keep the windows closed when the wind is blowing. There are a few OTC allergy drops that are effective as well. Finally, allergy shots are effective for many people and an allergy specialist does this testing and administration.

Question: I recently had a stye in my eye. Someone told me that stress brings these on. Is there any truth to that? Also, it was ugly

and unsightly. I still have a small bump on the upper lid. Do I need surgery to remove this?

Louis G, Palm Springs, CA Answer: Louis, styes are very annoying and can be painful. A stye is an infected oil gland and can present on either the upper or lower eyelid, basically a pimple on the eyelid. Stress has nothing to do with this problem. The technical term for a stye is hordeolum. The treatment for a stye is hot lid compresses, topical and oral antibiotics and possibly steroid drops. DO NOT try to ‘pop’ it on your own. This will cause the infection to spread throughout the whole lid. Eventually, with treatment, a hordeolum will drain when it ‘comes to a head’.

When a hordeolum does not drain and resolve spontaneously, it encapsulates and becomes a painless bump of the upper or lower lid called a chalazion. Eventually, a chalazion will shrink and dissipate.

Only if the appearance annoys you do you need to seek surgical intervention.

Always Overbooked…

Sometimes, you wish you had a better memory.

For instance, you would never, forget appointments. You could tell better jokes, win more arguments, save more money. You’d remember faces of the people you met and events that happened when you were too small for it to matter.

Then again, as you’ll see in the new book “Pee-Shy: A Memoir” by Frank Spinelli, some things you’ll wish you could forget.

When he was just an eight-year-old, Frank Spinelli received a toy medical kit as a gift, and decided on the spot that he wanted to be a doctor someday. It was a surprise, therefore, years later, when he flunked out of college, his scholarship gone with his dreams.

Taking the advice of a friend, Spinelli

began therapy to explore the reasons for his dark life and med-school failure. The answer, as it turned out, was easy…

It started when Spinelli was just eleven years old, overweight, bullied, sports hating, and a frustration to his Italian parents, who pushed their son into Scouting.

Spinelli hated Scouting, but he admired the area’s Scoutmaster. He liked Bill, and he knew that Bill liked him. Bill took Spinelli out for ice cream, and to do errands. He invited Spinelli over to his house for what Bill called “boy bonding.” When Spinelli eventually told his parents about this molestation, very little was done and even less was said.

Fast forward: back on track, Spinelli achieved his dream of becoming a doctor.

He opened his own practice in New York and grew his clientele. He seemed like a

successful, happy gay man, but old issues still plagued him: sometimes, he couldn’t empty his bladder. Configurations of bathrooms mattered. Other occupants mattered. Urinals were mostly off-limits. It was a remnant of his abuse, and he’d learned to deal with it.

And then, old memories began to float forward. Small reminders nagged at Spinelli. He found a book written about Bill, and learned that Bill had adopted a son.

That opened a floodgate of images and questions.

So Spinnelli picked up the phone and called the man…

Is your jaw on the floor yet? I know mine was as I followed author Frank Spinelli on his incredible journey in “Pee-Shy.” With steady strength and a rare kind of candor, Spinelli writes of a childhood filled with bullying, embarrassment, and curiosity for forbidden (girl’s) things. It’s almost a relief as this formerly-outcast kid lets us see him become a successful adult – and yet, it’s a mixed bag, since we’re then privy to his falling apart, his self-doubts, and frustrations that his body reacts as it does, now that it’s safe. None of this is easy to read – it’s a squirmy book, for sure - but what makes it worthwhile is the sense of courage and closure that the ending allows.

Be aware that there are some explicit bits to this book, but it’s appropriate and not gratuitous. If you can handle that, though, then “Pee-Shy: A Memoir” is a book that’ll surely stick in your memory.

Doing the Circuit

We all know about and most of us love the White Party, which kicks off in the spring in the Desert.

While always open to anyone, the parties generally are viewed as gatherings for gay men. Circuit parties charge admission, with some being run for-profit and others benefiting charities. These great parties are uber lavish affairs with top-drawer lighting, music, and costumed attendees are all de rigueur. and are held in venues that can accommodate large crowds. They started in the 70’s in Columbus Ohio as the Red party and exploded in the 80s and 90s.

The granddaddies of Circuit Parties are the White Party in Palm Springs and the White Party in Miami.

Circuit parties are known to attract a broad range of demographics, from young gay men in their early 20s to those in

their 40s, 50s and even 60s, and both single gay men and couples in long-term relationships. They are not without controversy within the gay community and high drug use and promiscuous sex and part of the deal. It also raises questions about an association between drug use and risky sex practices among gay and bisexual men.

For those of you who love this scene do not just do the White Party here is Palm Springs but try some others.

A close by non-stop flight on American Airline is the sensational Purple Party in Dallas May 8-12. Great dance venues, wonderful hotel deals, and great stars.

A weekend long party in Provincetown celebrates Independence Week and the party town of the northeast explodes into a bigger

party for all. It is June 28 -July 6. Obviously make your reservations now.

Fire Island was one of the earliest party places. Way back in the 70s. Some of you may remember. The Pines Party now is a great time for all from July 25-27.

Barcelona is one of the world’s largest circuit parties. It is more than a week-long, so get in shape now. Aug 6-17 on the waterfront for one of the world’s most fabulous cities.

Tropical Heat is a huge party in Key West. Aug 15-18, It is a great town and marvelous event for men!!

Then comes Southern Decadences which began in the 70s as a gay Mardi Gras. Pat Robertson blamed Hurricane Katrina on the sins of Southern Decadence. T-shirts sales were brisk!!! It is Aug 27-Sep. 1.

Rounding out the year is the Black and Blue Party in Montreal, Quebec. It runs Oct 9-15 and has been a huge success for decades.

So, if you all can make in half of there in a year you clearly are champion party goers!! Have fun and play safe. Cheers!!

Not sure if Julia Child had the first cooking show but she will always be the mother of TV cooking. Let us not forget some of the other great gourmet gurus that have seasoned the TV screen.

Graham Kerr – The Galloping Gourmet; truly the first Food & Wine expert. Jeff Smith – The Frugal Gourmet; showed us how to do things on a budget. Sara Moulton – Cooking Live; one of the pioneers of the Food Network and the Dean of American Cookery himself James Beard – the first nationally televised cooking show host, Elsie Presents James Beard in “I Love to Eat” don’t remember it?

A: I’m an English pub kind of guy. Deep fry me something crunchy and salty and pour me a pint of beer and I’m happy. I was really enjoying an order of our fat onion rings at our new restaurant last night; we toss those in a garlic salt.

Q: What is the one cooking utensil you could not live without?

A: I love a zester. I’m not a Zen person so I’m more end-result oriented than process oriented. But I do love using a microplane zester. I love how the scent of the citrus immediately begins to fill the workspace and I love the little moment of running your finger along the inside to dump the zest into the bowl.

Q: Favorite romantic / or sexy food?

A: We’ve been together for 17 years and have an 8-year-old son. Sexy food equates to anything that is eaten in a restaurant without a kid’s menu.

Q: Favorite late night comfort food?

A: Gale Gand and I were in a supermarket late one night near my weekend place in Michigan and came across the Spam. We bought a can along with soft fresh rolls and went home and made midnight Spam sandwiches with a fried egg, roasted red peppers and sautéed zucchini. The salty spam, the soft bread and a cold beer…oh my God. It is our secret late night guilty pleasure. WAS our secret actually, as we have added it to our menu at SpritzBurger, the only change is we serve it open-faced on a homemade bread pudding ‘bun’.

A: We live in an ‘everything in moderation’ lifestyle and we bring our son up with that phrase. That being said, we do not try to be a health-focused restaurant or business. Our point of view is more about enjoying a party.

Q: What’s the largest number of people you have cooked for?

A: We run huge events with our catering business. This includes some of the high profile summer fests in Chicago. The Better Homes & Gardens Grill & Chill event was for tens of thousands. We’ve fed high profile clients including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Oprah Winfrey.

Q: Favorite veggie / fruit and why?

A: I don’t think I have a “favorite” fruit but my favorite “fruit moment” each year is picking the apples from our Michigan orchard.

Walking through the orchard with our son and munching petite juicy Jonathan apples while the yellow jackets buzz around us is always my favorite ‘fruit moment’ of the year.

Q: What would you be if you were not a chef?

A: I’m an actor; mostly musical theatre. My business has been so successful that it’s pulled me away from it. I miss it terribly.
