Summer’s Dance Floor Divas By Max Jimenez

Leah Laurenti

After a period of commercial decline, dance music is back in a big way. The revival is largely tied to the soaring popularity of electronic dance music, or E.D.M., and music acts like David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia. But a bunch of new talent has been emerging from the underground this summer, many of them of the diva variety. Here are three of the women tearing up dance floors with brand new summer jams. Leah Laurenti carries herself with the confidence of a seasoned performer and immediately commands the attention of every room, no matter the size. However engaging, her extrinsic image gives way to undeniable talent the moment she sings. She has a surprising vocal maturity that sparks a blaze in her original material and brings jazzy new life to classic standards. With her effortless, embedded ability, she makes it seem easy. But as every performer knows, the road to success is anything but easy. On “About a Girl,” the bold and infectious new single that marks Veronica Jensen’s long awaited breakthrough in the U.S., the Denmark based dance sensation sings with sass and confidence

about her playful desire to take over the world even as she’s having a blast partying. With numerous European dance hits and hundreds of live performances under the group name Aycan—and thousands of new fans in China thanks to her deal with EMI Asia—the multitalented performer and vocal powerhouse is well on her way to achieving that goal. Melissa Manchester, as founding member and “toots in the middle” of the Harlettes, the infamous girl group behind Bette Midler, Melissa fulfilled her childhood fantasy of playing Carnegie Hall. Six months later, she had a recording contract, and went on to headline at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall, and performed for soldout audiences across the country. Forty years after releasing her debut album and 30 years after scoring a Grammy Award for Best Female Vocal Performance for her #5 Billboard hit “You Should Hear How She Talks About You,” the powerhouse singer and songwriterbest known for towering ballads like “Don’t Cry Out Loud,” “Midnight Blue” and “Though The Eyes Of Love”. She is already receiving airplay around the world for her explosive and infectious new track

be either a nurse or a chef.

melIssa manchester: I don’t know that it reflects what’s going on today but it is a perfect escape from the cares and worries of today’s world. Are remixes important? leah laurentI: remixes bring a song to another level. I love a good dance remix. VeronIca Jensen: yes, it’s important that there be something out there for everybody.

VeronIca Jensen: music is a huge part of me, but I could see myself doing something in the tV industry. I love anything creative. melIssa manchester: I’d work in a soup kitchen or be an inventor. do you have a special message for your gay fans this summer? leah laurentI: Don’t let your sexuality define you. Let the life you lead and the love you project show people who you are.

melIssa manchester: listen to the mig and rizzo remix of “two courageous hearts” and you tell me!

VeronIca Jensen: be good to yourself and remember: no matter what some people may say, love is for everybody. have fun, let loose and embrace life, ya’ll.

What would you be doing if you weren’t making music? leah laurentI: I love two things: food and helping people. I’d

melIssa manchester: have fun this summer, but don’t do anything stupid.

Mixing it Up By Chris Astrala

This month with our music theme we wanted to introduce you to some of the new and veteran local DJ talent who are spinning at a club near you. They promise to get your feet tapping and fingers snapping to their beats. So check out their web pages and take a night out to dance as if no one is watching; because these guys will make you do just that. “Everything in the universe has a rhythm, everything dances. ” – Maya Angelou

Anthony Araiza aka AIMLO

What are your go-to songs that are sure to get people on the dance floor? I play a lot of multi-genre parties so there are a lot of songs going through my head. Aside from the classics, there are three songs that I love to play right now that really get people moving. • “Lady (Kaytranada Remix)” by Modjo • “When A Fire Starts to Burn” by Disclosure • “64 Ways (Kraak & Smaak Remix)” by Detroit Swindle feat. Mayer Hawthorne Speaking of the dance floor, what gets you out there? Oh my! This is a really hard question because I love so many styles of music. I go through phases with music, and the seasons really dictate the mood I’m in. At the moment I’m really into house and techno. Again I’ll give three that really stand out for me right now. • “Advancing Man (Danse Club Remix)” by Groove Armada & Brodanse feat. Kevin Knapp • “Tell You Why” by Route 94 • “Midland” by Trace If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing? I can never see myself not being a DJ. Not to sound cheesy, or cliché, but it is in my DNA at this point. I got my first set of turntables when I was 14 and I was making cassette mix-tapes for years before that. It has become such a huge part of my life especially since the DJ world has gone digital. I am searching for new music daily. Even if the gigs went away I know I would still be seeking out new music, and mixing in my bedroom. But if I really think about it I would be an astronaut or a middle school teacher. soundcloud.com/aimlo | facebook.com/aimlo | dj-aimlo.com

Annie Flores aka Femme-A I’ve been very drawn to music for as long as I can remember, I love the way it sounds and the way it makes me feel. I grew up listening to LA radio stations anything from Oldies to R&B, Hip Hop and Pop. After High School I was introduced to Electronica Dance Music and then New Wave/ 80’s. One of the first regular dance clubs I attended ritually played Electro, 80’s and Show tunes so it was very eclectic, I loved the place but I also came out during that time period and met my very first girlfriend there. Some of that music along with

all the other artists I grew up listening to have inspired me to this day. one of the main reasons I moved back to the coachella Valley in 2011 was to pursue DJ’n and to gig around town. I have a lot of lgbt friends here in the valley so I felt comfortable here but at the same time I wanted to try to bring the music that inspired me to town. I started my first gigs with Boudoir Entertainment (a lesbian event based group). Since then I’ve worked private parties, weddings, local bars & clubs here in town. I love every single gig I do, I get nervous sometimes while I perform but I’m so passionate about the music that I just want to learn more and continue to get better and better at the skill aspect of mixing and beat matching. I do different types of events gay and straight for all types of people and crowds. my all time favorite sets to are multi genre, (i.e. Hip Hop, Top 40, & EDM) but currently I love trap music. What are your go-to songs that are sure to get people on the dance floor? My go to songs to get people on the dance floor are... happy songs or latin music always works - Danza Kuduro by Don omar is one good one, michael Jackson Pyt, Push it by salt n Pepa, and for eDm lovers anything with a good drop and a lot of bass. (Derro - Flashlight). Speaking of the dance floor, what gets you out there? What gets me on the dance floor is any good Electro House song with good synthesizers and good bass or certain hip hop tracks but nothing too Pop. If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing? If I wasn’t a “DJ” I’d still definitely still be into something artistic. I just took a photography class as an elective recently and that was fun and creative, maybe something in that area or a graphic designer. you can hear my latest mix on mixcloud & soundcloud www.mixcloud.com/Femme-a/ | www.soundcloud.com/femme-a

Palm springs native female DJ, Ivanna love also known as cici, is one unique music-loving individual. the “love” in her name represents her love for the music & life. her love for music started way back when she was just a toddler, bouncing to the mysterious sounds coming from speakers. It has only escalated later in life to her pursuing a musical career. music is understood in any language breaking down any barrier, the music she provides unites everyone with feel good sounds. let her good vibes take you on a musical journey and groove with Ivanna loVe <3 What are your go-to songs that are sure to get people on the dance floor? my go-to song that I know gets people to dance is: Show me love- Robyn S. (Remixed by Steve Angello & Laidback Luke) It’s a well-known old school song with modern beats that attracts any person whether they’ve heard the original song or this remixed version. once that song has caught your ears then I continue that house music vibe that makes you groove along with what I continue to play. Speaking of the dance floor, what gets you out there? I love to dance, so I enjoy any feel good music that just keeps me moving, grooving happily. If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing? I would love to become an acupuncturist! I admire and respect that form of ancient medicine. http://www.mixcloud.com/Ivannalove/ Facebook music page: Ivanna love | twitter: Ivannalov

Not Coming Down

Tony Moran and Martha Wash

Their Newest Collaboration Soars up The Dance Charts By Shawn Larson

It has been seven years since dance powerhouses Tony Moran and Martha Wash have collaborated on a club track. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Tony Moran is the two-time Grammy nominated DJ and producer, best known for his work with pop artists like Rihanna, Gloria Estefan, Cher, Kristine W and countless others. He has also released major indie dance hits like “Cafe Con Alegria” and “The Promise”. Martha Wash is one of the original Weather Girls whose hit song “It’s Raining Men” is a Pride staple. Her nineties track “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” and “Strike It Up” still play on dance floors and R&B radio today. Moran and Wash’s last collaboration, 2007’s “Keep Your Body Workin”, rose all the way to #1 on the Billboard dance chart. Their new collaboration, “Not Coming Down” is now following along the same path. Can these two dynamos of dance do it again? We spoke with Tony Moran and Martha Wash after their recent show together in Palm Springs. It’s so nice to see you working with Martha Wash again! Tony Moran: Martha and I have been long time friends and collaborators. Do you remember first meeting Tony Moran? Martha Wash: It was so many years ago! I really don’t remember the exact time. We would often see each other back then in passing, at shows we were both performing. Your first collaboration was on “Keep Your Body Workin”. Tony Moran: Seven years ago! Time flies! You know the song was #1 at the end of 2007 and stayed at #1 for the first week of 2008. That was pretty awesome! Why did it take so long for you two to come together again? Martha Wash: Our schedules were always in conflict. Tony Moran: We have done other things in the studio that we never quite finished.

14 theStandardps.com

What made “I’m Not Coming Down” different? Tony Moran: From the beginning, I could really see the personal attachment Martha had to the song. She co-wrote it and it clearly shows that she is the master of her destiny. I knew I had to remix it. Martha, you wrote “I’m Not Coming Down”? Martha Wash: I wrote it in collaboration with Jim Carolan and Brandy Anderson. I wrote a few other songs on my new album including “Destiny” with Zach Adam. What is the song’s message? Martha Wash: Always keep your head up and believe that the higher power is looking out for your good. You have to believe. How has the club scene changed since the release of “Keep Your Body Workin”? Tony Moran: It has changed considerably. Dance music has separated into multi sub genres. People have expanded their ideas on what a party experience can be.

Tony, you began your career back in the freestyle days of 1981. Do you think freestyle will ever come back? Tony Moran: Yes. It will evolve, but the vibe that gave it that unique flavor will remain. I occasionally do some freestyle performances. I was surprised when 8,000 people showed up at the last one in Atlantic City. Do you keep in touch with TKA, Sa-Fire, the Cover Girls or Lisette Melendez? Tony Moran: Yes! All of them look and are doing great. The songs that they recorded have all become cult classics and they all continue to tour together, playing for huge crowds. They still have their moves and guess what? So do I! How have you two managed to persevere in the everchanging music biz for so long? Martha Wash: We don’t force ourselves to change. We simply go with it. What’s next? Tony Moran: I just completed a new song with house music legend Todd Terry. I sing in it! It’s called “Take It All The Way”. Remixes are finished so you’ll hear it soon.

Latin Music fans Celebrate 50 years of Salsa By Richie Martinez

Right from the start, Fania Records and its subsidiaries exceeded everybody’s expectations. The label was created in 1964. Fania created a unique sound: the apex of tropical music, combined with the swing of big band jazz and the gritty vibe of American R&B. The label provided an artistic haven for a young generation of musicians who were inspired to experiment with new musical formats. It also gave birth to a musical group, the legendary Fania All Stars that changed the history of Latin Music. The widely successful Fania All Stars brought together several of the label’s most popular artists like Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon, Celia Cruz, Ray Barretto, Ismael Miranda, Ruben Blades, Cheo Feliciano, and Roberto Roena among many others. The albums recorded from the early ‘70s to the mid-’80s went beyond the parameters of so-called “salsa” - taking Latin music to unsuspected levels of sophistication. Their music was heard from the streets of El Barrio in New York, to the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and Africa. It penetrated the market so successfully and became so popular at the international level that its executives decided to broaden its talent in order to reach an even wider audience. The Fania All Stars’ first concert, “Live at the Red Garter,” was a promotional experiment designed solely to test the waters. The all-star cast included Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Ricardo Ray, and Bobby Cruz, and resulted in a live double album. The experiment couldn’t have been more successful. In 1971, the band revolutionized salsa as a genre with “Fania All Stars at the Cheetah,” a concert that was filmed and recorded live. In 1973, following a successful tour, the band made its first appearance at Yankee Stadium in New York. The stars performed before countless fans that had caught the fever and were swooning in the presence of consecrated performers of the genre. This concert, too was filmed and recorded live, and set the standard in the music industry. “Fania All-Stars was the baddest band that has ever existed,” says singer Ismael Miranda, who joined Fania in 1968 at age 18. “What made it so magical was that we created a family atmosphere, we had the best musicians and singers who respected one another, and we showed that respect to our audience. Before we knew it, a two-hour show became a three-hour show and the people loved it,” Miranda adds. “Our sound was special because it was like a paella,” says conga player Eddie Montalvo, who joined the label in the early 1980s. “We had a lot of ingredients go in to make great music and lay the foundation of what we call salsa. We were like the Latino Motown.” To commemorate Fania’s 50th anniversary; New York City will

16 theStandardps.com

play host to a summer long series of city-wide outdoor concerts honoring the label’s legacy starting June 14 in Central Park and will run through August 24. Culminating with a Central Park blowout reuniting many of the Fania legends, including Johnny Pacheco, Ismael Miranda, Bobby Valentin, Larry Harlow, Isidro Infante and Eddie Montalvo. The celebration, part of the annual SummerStage festival, also includes dance and theater performances, a screening

of the 1972 Fania All-Stars concert documentary “Our Latin Thing,” and other events paying homage to the groundbreaking label cofounded in New York by bandleader Johnny Pacheco in 1964. “Being honored for the whole season of SummerStage is the best thing that has happened to us in New York, because this is where (Fania) was born,” Miranda says. “We’re planning a great show and we’re bringing in singers that have been with Fania at various times throughout the years. It’s going to be nice.” There will be a long shadow cast over the happy occasion, though. Many of the performers who helped make Fania what it is are no longer around, a fact punctuated by the recent death of singer Cheo Feliciano. “It’s a pity because most of the (original) singers aren’t here anymore,” Miranda says. “(I feel sad) that I’ll get on stage and I won’t see Hector or Celia and I won’t see Cheo, all those guys were the greatest”. “I’ve worked with a lot of different bands and been in many different shows,” he adds. “Still, I haven’t felt that magical thing that happens with Fania. Something comes on stage with us.” For further info and complete list of concerts and event dates visit www.fania.com

book review

Always Overbooked… By Terri Schlichenmeyer

They should have called you Super-Fly. Yep, that’s what you were, dancing in front of your TV every Saturday, spinning on the carpet and waving your arms around until you got yelled at for “gonna break something.” But you were the flyest of fly. The only thing you were going to bust was a move, just like on Soul Train. And in “The Hippest Trip in America” by Nelson George, you’ll read about the iconic TV program that you never, ever missed. Everyone knew that Don Cornelius had “ambition”: he was a car salesman, policeman, and insurance agent before his “foghorn voice” led him to radio in 1966. He made the transition to TV two years later, and he soon realized there was a need for a “black” TV show. He presented the idea, and then found major corporate sponsorship, and on October 2, 1971, Soul Train appeared locally in Chicago. The show was “’overnight hot’” but Cornelius knew there was more to this idea. With another sponsor on-board for a nation-wide launch, Cornelius pitched the show to the networks, but they turned it down. He decided to syndicate Soul Train and moved the show to Los Angeles. Though the music was always the focus of Soul Train, Cornelius knew that the dancers (in particular, those in the Soul Train line) were what brought viewers back. In L.A., scouts kept their eyes open for promising teens who could dance, often mining prospects from three main area clubs. Dancers performed for free and fed chicken dinners, but the real appeal of being a Soul Train dancer was fame and the opportunity for a career in show biz. It seemed as though every regular viewer wanted to be a Soul Train regular, too. But as much as Cornelius controlled his show (and, to a certain extent, his dancers), he couldn’t control what happened, culturally. Early-90s fashions confounded him, music videos concerned him, and gangsta rap made him uncomfortable. And so, though the show would continue for another 13 years, Cornelius announced in 1993 that he’d step down as Soul Train host – a move that arguably meant, “The show was over.” From its first pages and throughout, the word “joy” crops up often in “The Hippest Trip in America,” and for good reason: it was everywhere in the show and even more in this book. I took great joy, in fact, in seeing how author Nelson George sent me to the internet. His descriptions of what happened through

18 theStandardps.com

the years on Soul Train made me want to see, too, and there are plenty of clips online. I also liked the interviews with former dancers and the cultural frame-of-reference included here, and the history of the show – along with little-known tidbits – made this a great (and surprisingly fast-paced) read filled with reminiscing, “Love, peace, and soul.” Get out your bell-bottoms and your best dancin’ shoes, have a good internet connection, and get ready. For you, “The Hippest Trip in America” is a book you’ll want to bust out and find. “The Hippest Trip in America: Soul Train and the Evolution of Culture & Style” by Nelson George c.2014, William Morrow $27.99 / $34.99 Canada 256 pages

The California Assembly passed AB 2501, a bill authored by Assembly member Susan Bonilla that is designed to curb the so-called “panic defense” by making it clear that a defendant’s discovery of a victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity is not sufficient provocation to reduce a charge of murder to manslaughter. The bill, which is co-sponsored by Equality California and Attorney General Kamala D. Harris, passed by a bipartisan vote of 50-18. “The bipartisan support for AB 2501 in the Assembly is a strong indicator that California is done with these bogus ‘panic’ defenses,” said John O’Connor, Equality California executive director. ”A victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity should never be used to mitigate the punishment for a crime, and we thank Assembly member Bonilla and Attorney General Harris for their leadership on this issue.” “Currently, a panic defense allows a criminal defendant to claim that violence against the LGBT community is understandable or acceptable, when it is absolutely inexcusable” said Assemblywoman Susan A. Bonilla. “AB 2501 strikes the correct balance of allowing a person to present evidence in his or her defense, while ensuring that biases do not mitigate violent crimes against members of the LGBT community.” Including AB 2501, four EQCA bills have now passed out of their houses of origin: AB 1951, authored by Assembly member Jimmy Gomez, would modernize California birth certificates by allowing parents to choose to self-designate as “father,” “mother” or “parent,” eliminating inaccurate designations and confusion for same-sex parents. AB 1951 passed with a bipartisan majority of 53-14. SB 1306, authored by Senator Mark Leno and co-sponsored with the National Center for Lesbian Rights, brings California statutory law into line with last June’s Supreme Court decision restoring the freedom to marry in California. would be replaced with gender-neutral language such as “spouse” to recognize all married couples throughout California code. SB 1306 passed with a bipartisan majority of 25-10. AB 1577, the Respect After Death Act, authored by Speaker Toni Atkins and co-sponsored with Transgender Law Center, would make sure death certificates for transgender Californians accurately reflect their authentic, lived identity. AB 1577 passed with a bipartisan majority of 62-5. Two additional EQCA-sponsored bills will be voted on before the end of August. Those bills are SB 323, authored by Senator Ricardo Lara, which clarifies that nonprofit youth organizations will only be rewarded with special tax exemptions if they comply with California’s existing nondiscrimination laws, and AB 496, authored by Assembly member Rich Gordon, which clarifies that existing cultural competency training for health care providers should include discussion of LGBT issues.

United Nations To Begin Recognizing Staff Members’ Legal Same-Sex Unions The United Nations has announced it will begin recognizing staff members’ legal same-sex unions according to the laws where the union was established. The change was detailed in a policy statement issued by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on June 26: “Previously, a staff member’s personal status was determined by the laws applicable in their country of nationality. Now, personal status will be determined instead by the law of the competent authority under which the personal status was established.” Describing the new policy, Ban said, “Human rights are at the core of the mission of the United Nations. I am proud to stand for greater equality for all staff, and I call on all members of our UN family to unite in rejecting homophobia as discrimination that can never be tolerated at our workplace.” “All staff members are part of the UN family and deserve to be treated equally,” he added, in an article posted on LinkedIn. The landmark policy reform follows a pledge by the SecretaryGeneral to address discrimination against staff based on sexual orientation.

“What this means is simple: if you are in a legal union, the UN will recognize it. If you were thinking of entering into one, you can now do so with the full knowledge that the UN will recognize it, said Hyung Hak Nam (Alfonso), President of UN-GLOBE, which represents LGBT UN staff.

Berlusconi Changes His Tune On Gay Rights The leader of Forza Italia, (a liberal-conservative, Christiandemocratic and liberal political party in Italy, with a large socialdemocratic minority), Silvio Berlusconi, four times Prime Minister of Italy, takes the field for the defense of the rights of gays and lesbians. “The fight for civil rights for homosexuals is a fight that in a truly modern and democratic country should be everyone’s responsibility,” Berlusconi said, reports La Repubblica. “As a liberal, I believe that through a broad and in-depth debate we can reach a reasonable objective for justice and civilization.” Berlusconi, 77, made the remarks the day after a number of LGBT pride marches were held across Italy, which saw tens of thousands of Italians take to the streets in support of gay rights. The remarks also came hours after his girlfriend Francesca Pascale and Vittorio Feltri, a journalist

at Il Giornale, a newspaper owned by the Berlusconi family, signed up to Italy’s main gay rights organization Arcigay, reports The Local. Berlusconi has a history of anti-gay gaffes, including in 2010 when he was quoted as saying “my passion for women is better than being gay” as he fought of allegations of sex parties.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Cross Your Fingers and Fill In the Blanks By Christopher Heritage

You’ve heard enough about estate planning from your family and friends. You’re finally convinced that you need to do something to protect yourself, your partner, and your property. But, you say, “I’ll be darned if I’ll pay a high-priced attorney to fill out a few forms”. You saw an ad for a complete estate plan package for $995.00 - just go on-line, down-load all the forms, fill them out and the job’s done. You don’t have to meet with an attorney, think about it, or even leave your home to do all the estate planning you need. Or you heard about a “document service” where a paralegal provides you with several forms, you fill them out, and she puts them in a nice, neat file folder for you. Cheap, over and done with. And guess what? Your local office supply store sells pre-printed legal forms. Pick them up, fill in the blanks, and you’re good to go. Why not take advantage of these or other low-cost shortcuts to peace of mind? There are very strong reasons why most people should avoid these methods. Wills and Trusts require careful thought and sound legal advice. Tax planning is an important part of it, too. An estate

plan isn’t just an assortment of forms and documents. It is a map for the future that considers all the aspects of your present life, requires decisions about what might happen to you and your family, and is crafted so the plan will continue to evolve as time goes by. A recent court case illustrates one major hazard of do-ityourself documents: A Florida lady filled out an “E-Z Legal Form” when she made out her Will. She wanted to leave all of her property to her sister, then to her brother, if her sister predeceased her. The sister did die first, and the brother claimed he was entitled to the entire estate. But the pre-printed Will stated that all “listed” items should go to the brother. Not all of the lady’s assets were listed. And the Will did not have a residuary clause (and not even any room on the form to add such a clause) providing for the disposition of property not listed in the document. Two of the lady’s nieces (children of another brother, already deceased) brought action. After lengthy arguments on both sides, the court decided that the listed items must go to the brother, as the Will provided, but the unlisted assets must pass outside the Will, to

JULY, 2014 25

LeGaLLy sPeaKIng the nieces, who were the next heirs in the line of succession. although it may have been the lady’s intent that her brother inherits all of her estate, the Will did not say so, and it did not provide any way for him to claim the unlisted items. concurring Justice barbara Pariente commented, “While I appreciate that there are many individuals in this state who might have difficulty affording a lawyer, this case does remind me of the old adage ‘penny-wise and pound foolish.’” Pre-printed forms can’t possibly include all the language needed to cover the wide range of possibilities and probabilities that are part of our everyday lives. there is no single Will, trust, Power of attorney or any other pre-printed form or pre-written format that can meet the needs of everyone. how would you know if some essential language is missing, or certain statements can cause problems, or your intent is not truly reflected in the document? How do you know what you don’t know? Attorneys have studied the laws (and the court cases) and get to know you and all the details of your particular situation. they recognize the hazards and pitfalls of missing or incorrect language, and draft comprehensive documents that fit you like a glove. You are not a John Doe, and your estate plan shouldn’t be, either. For those of us in the lgbt community, it is even more crucial that our plans cover the unique family, health and property issues we face because we still lack equality under most state and some federal

laws. a properly crafted estate plan gives us the visibility and legal standing that is so essential to protect our families and our assets. our special needs require special planning. there should be ads and articles in the newspaper and magazines cautioning people against using pre-printed legal forms. but attorneys often chuckle about this. they don’t plan to run any ads. they get a lot of business from clients who tried the do-it-yourself approach and found the documents unusable when they were needed. Folks who wanted to save a little money bought a lot grief for themselves or their families. In the court case, the lady may have tried to save herself a few dollars by filling in the blanks, but in the end her estate had huge attorneys’ fees and two years of wasted time. the nieces, of course, were delighted with the e-Z legal Form she used. they came out over $100,000 ahead. Definitely not the result the lady wanted. this article is part of an ongoing series of articles pertaining to legal issues relevant to the lgbt community, and is intended for general information purposes only – not legal advice. christopher heritage is an attorney in Palm springs and san Diego, who focuses on lgbt estate planning, domestic partnerships, same-sex marriage, probate, trust administration, and bankruptcy. he welcomes questions and comments and can be contacted at 760-325-2020 or at chris@heritagelegal.com

eqca update Court Declines to Review Appeals Court Decision Upholding California Law By Steve Roth

Equality California and NCLR applaud U.S. Supreme Court’s decision allowing enforcement of California law prohibiting dangerous psychological practices to change minors’ sexual orientation or gender expression. On Monday, the Supreme Court of the United States declined to review a 2013 decision of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upholding California’s Senate Bill 1172, a law that prohibits licensed counselors and therapists from engaging in dangerous practices to try to change the sexual orientation or gender expression of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender children. Known as “conversion therapy,” “reparative therapy,” “ex-gay therapy,” or “sexual orientation change efforts,” the practices have been condemned by medical and mental health organizations across the country because they are known to lead to extreme depression and suicide. The Supreme Court’s decision today clears the way for enforcement of California’s law—signed by Gov. Jerry Brown in September 2012 and the first of its kind in the nation—that provides that state-licensed therapists who engage in the prohibited practices with minor patients may be subject to professional discipline by California licensing authorities. The constitutionality of the California law was challenged in October 2012 in two lawsuits filed by antiLGBT groups, primarily representing therapists who engage in the prohibited practices. In the fall of 2012, Equality California filed a successful motion to intervene in one of the lawsuits to defend the law alongside California Attorney General Kamala Harris, who represents the State of California defendants. Equality California is represented by the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and the law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP. On August 29, 2013, a three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously upheld the law, ruling that the plaintiffs in two legal challenges could not succeed on their claim that the law infringes the free speech rights of therapists who wish to engage in these dangerous and long-discredited practices. The full Ninth Circuit court declined to further review that

decision, and the plaintiffs in the two lawsuits then asked the Supreme Court to review the cases. The Supreme Court denied those requests today, meaning that the Ninth Circuit panel’s decision upholding the law will be the final decision on the plaintiffs’ free-speech claims and the California law may be enforced. Senate Bill 1172 was authored by Senator Ted Lieu and sponsored by NCLR, Equality California, Gaylesta, Courage Campaign, Lambda Legal, and Mental Health America of Northern California, and supported by dozens of organizations, including the California Psychological Association, the California Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, and the California Division of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. NCLR Legal Director Shannon Minter said: “This life-saving law has cleared the final hurdle and will now protect California youth from harmful practices that have been rejected by all leading medical and mental health organizations. This important legislation will permanently improve the health and well being of California’s most vulnerable LGBT young people. We look forward to more states joining California and New Jersey in preventing state-licensed therapists from engaging in discredited practices that offer no health benefits and put LGBT youth at risk of severe harm, including depression and suicide.” Added Equality California Executive Director-Elect Rick Zbur: “The Supreme Court’s decision to let Senate Bill 1172 protect our LGBT youth is a major step forward for California and our nation. We are proud to live in the first state to protect young people from the lifelong damage caused by these horrific practices. We thank Sen. Ted Lieu for authoring this bill, Speaker Emeritus John A. Pérez for his bold leadership in helping to get the law passed, and Gov. Jerry Brown for signing it into law.” NCLR recently launched #BornPerfect: The Campaign to End Conversion Therapy, a national effort aimed at protecting LGBT kids from conversion therapy and ending the practice across the country in five years.

Music For The Eye By Dennis Mason, BFA, CPT All visual art forms that are well crafted and beautifully presented could be interpreted by simply calling their properties “MUSIC FOR THE EYE.” The human physique is one of those forms. It is living-sculpture and timeless in appearance. Each of us has been given a lifelong vessel to carry us on our journey through life. It is amazing in its creation; flawless in operation; and fascinating in its ability to grow, develop, repair and adapt to almost limitless situations. The only thing required of us is to take care of it in the same manner we would any other valuable possession. Many people plan their career, financial goals, home improvements and vacations in great detail, but rarely do the same when it comes to staying healthy and in the best shape they can be. The fact is that without good health and fitness, all other plans will be hard to achieve. The proper feeding and maintenance of our bodies is required for optimum output of both body and mind. When our bodies operate efficiently we can more effectively manage the other areas of our life. Personal health and fitness needs to be first on your list every day of the year. That does not mean we have to be a fanatic, or make drastic changes all at once. Personal health and fitness simply put, means staying ‘in shape’ by following a few simple guidelines: 1 Perform some form of rigorous physical exercise at least 30 minutes per day. (Add movements such as aerobic and flexibility exercises on alternate days.) 2 Eat smaller meals more often each day (ex: 5-6 smaller meals at regular intervals.) 3 Drink more pure water daily and reduce the amount of soda, coffee, or tea. 4 Eat less processed and GMO foods and more fresh, natural raw foods every day. 5 Sleep 8 hours each night to repair muscle tissues and the nervous system. 6 If need be, check with your doctor before starting any exercise program. These guidelines form the foundation of a lifestyle that will change your life for the better, regardless of your age or sex. You will feel better, look better and be more productive physically as well as mentally. Since being ‘in shape’ means different things to different people, the styles and types of exercises will vary. For example, many men and women enjoy resistance training, while others enjoy bicycling or swimming. Choose activities that will provide strength training and others that provide aerobic and anaerobic conditioning.

28 theStandardps.com

Most importantly, make fitness fun. Proper meal planning is of equal importance along with exercise and proper rest between workouts. Sensible meal planning is simply paying attention to the foods you eat and the frequency of meals. Try to eat as many wholesome foods as possible. Remember, the reason we eat at all is to provide the body and mind with the proper nutrients for energy, function and repair. Finally, during sleep, our bodies repair and rebuild muscle and connective tissue from the ‘bumps and dings’ of the day. The amount of sleep required is different for each of us, but 8 hours per night is the accepted average for most people. Remember, there is no truth to the fact that we can ‘make up’ the sleep we missed last night. Follow these simple protocols on a daily basis and see what a wonderful difference they can make in your life. You truly can transform your body into Music For The Eye! Cool Tunes Take Work!

By Dr. Kenneth Toth, BA, MAT, DC, RN, CPT

Oh, the auditory and visual dissonance out there! Do you sometimes feel that you are awash in a sea of dissonance? Most people know what to do to correct auditory dissonance. They just turn it off at the source, or get away from it. That is, if they have an “ear”. Fewer people have an “eye” for visual dissonance. They just sort of put up with it. Even fewer people can feel health dissonance because they’re not connected to their body’s state of health. People often manifest a future health mess because they don’t take action in the present about very much pertaining to their state of health, until a subclinical condition becomes clinical or, in the case of obesity, until they look like Humpty-Dumpty. Unfortunately, what most people don’t understand is that how one looks is usually connected to one’s state of mental and physical health. People who look hot like looking hot, and derive more potential pleasure and ease of life from looking fabulous. Jobs are much easier to land, people like being around them more, and life in general is just more fun. If anyone tells you differently, they’re probably unhealthy and out of shape. It absolutely astounds me when an inquiring prospective client, who obviously needs professional personal training, says he just can’t afford it because he’s on a “fixed income” (Who isn’t? That just means he’s on a working budget like everyone else.). Yet, he drove up in a new $80,000 Benz. So, is he going to have a ball driving that fabulous car to the skilled nursing home to check in some day (because he didn’t take better care of his body to preempt unnecessary disease and disability) or be buried in it? Honestly, I will never get it because it makes zero sense! The truth of the matter is that no one can afford

not to acquire proper instruction. Our most important responsibility to ourselves is our state of health. Even Grandma knew about priorities. She would say, “Without your health, you have nothing.” But, how did Grandma know that? She didn’t have a Ph.D. or an MD. She knew that because she was wise! Do you suspect that perhaps a lot of us have a great deal of “wising up” to do? Cool tunes are easy and fun to listen to. They are popular, they have rhythm, and they have longevity in the music world and in people’s minds and emotions. And they can produce royalties for years and years to come. But those cool tunes usually didn’t simply happen spontaneously. The creative idea might have been spontaneous, but a lot of work had to be put into the writing, producing, and performing to create “It”. Do you want to enjoy more popularity, progress through your life with spectacular rhythm, and celebrate an abnormal for your age healthy longevity? If you do the work, you can also get to enjoy all the royalties of much better, or even superb, health. Remember Grandma’s wisdom: “Without your health, you have nothing!” Do the work. Collect those royalties of a spectacular, healthy life! healthy picks Healthy And Tasty Food Substitutions From Culinary Experts By Chris Astrala Simple and healthy food substitutions can help anyone embrace the fresh flavors of summer. Some substitutions are easy, for example, substituting brown rice or quinoa for white rice or adding barley in with brown rice to add another type of whole grain. Other substitutions are completely unexpected. To be inspired and jazz up any mealtime, take cues from culinary experts. Chef Andrew Lyman, culinary director, The Art Institute of Austin, suggests, “It is not uncommon to use brown sugar, for white sugar, but I often challenge my students to use other ingredients as a sweetener - for example, using a teaspoon of vanilla can often produce similar results as a cup of sugar and it saves over 400 calories. Another option is using prunes for butter, especially in brownies or other dark baked goods - 3/4 cup of prunes with 1/4 cup of boiling water, puree to combine and you have a great option.” Chef instructor Peachy Seiden from The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of CincinnatiOhio says, “Using pureed fruit warmed on the stovetop with a bit of honey is a great substitute for classic maple syrup - decreasing the sugar content and providing an extra dose of antioxidants and vitamins and minerals.” Elliott Hilton, culinary director for The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Michigan, adds, “Using non-fat Greek yogurt when the recipe calls for mayonnaise or sour cream works really well since it’s a lot less fat and a good way to add additional protein.” Here are a few more substitutions you can make in your recipes: * Unsweetened applesauce for sugar (can be in a 1:1 ratio, but reduce the amount of liquid in the recipe by 1/4 cup). * Mashed bananas for fats. The creamy, thickening power of very ripe mashed bananas is the ideal consistency in place of one cup of butter or oil. * Spaghetti squash for pasta is a natural substitute. Simply roast and pull apart with a fork and voila. * Using coconut oil instead of butter adds additional health benefiting nutrients and the flavor is superb. * Reducing the calorie count of meals is helpful, but small adjustments make a big impact. “Something simple that I recommend is to make broths, soups and stews in advance and chill them. Before reheating, lift the hardened fat that formed on the surface. In a pinch, you can

34 theStandardps.com

also float a few ice cubes to help harden the fat so it can be lifted and removed,” says Hilton. * “Using brewed tea (green, white, oolong, black) as a ‘liquid ingredient’ to our sauce or stews add another flavor dimension, not to mention the added protective antioxidants,” says Seiden. * Meat consumption overall is an area that can be reduced tremendously both for the sake of health and calories. “We make a mean veggie burger here at the student-run restaurant - one that would make any meat lover a veggie burger convert,” says Lyman, who shares this recipe: Veggie Burger Patties: 1 1/2 cups cooked brown rice 1 1/2 cups cooked black beans, drained and roughly chopped 2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1/2 medium onion, smoked then minced 4 cloves garlic, smoked then minced 1/2 cup grated cooked beets (use a box grater to grate one roasted beet) 1/4-cup oat bran plus more as needed 1 tablespoon pureed chipotle chilies in adobo sauce 1 tablespoon yellow mustard 6 prunes, minced 1-teaspoon salt (kosher) 1-teaspoon ancho chili powder 1 teaspoon smoked Spanish paprika 1-teaspoon ground toasted cumin 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Makes four to six burgers Umami Glaze: 2 tablespoons light soy sauce 2 tablespoons Thai golden mountain sauce (available at Asian markets, optional) 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce 2 tablespoons molasses 2 tablespoons honey

Directions: In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, Thai golden mountain sauce if using, the hoisin sauce, molasses and honey. Heat a medium skillet over medium high heat. Add the oil and when hot, add the minced onion. Cook, stirring constantly, until it starts to caramelize and brown. Add garlic and continue cooking until the onions are golden brown. In a large bowl combine the cooked rice and roughly chopped beans. Add 1/2 cup of the Umami Glaze and the remaining ingredients including the sautĂŠed onion and garlic. Mix well to combine. Evaluate how well the mixture holds into patties. If too dry, add some of the Umami Glaze. If too wet, add a little more oat bran. Shape the veggie mixture into four to six patties, depending on size. Place the patties on a parchment lined baking sheet, cover, and refrigerate for at least one hour. To cook, brush the patties with a little vegetable oil and cook on a flat top griddle or nonstick pan over medium heat about five minutes per side to set the burger up.

after nearly three years in Desert hot springs, the PoP shop, selling Previously owned Products, including clothing, furniture, jewelry, art, records and more, has moved to Palm springs. now located at 511 Industrial Way, each and every sale goes to supporting safehouse of the Desert. safehouse of the Desert, located in thousand Palms, is the only emergency shelter for youth in crisis, 11-17 years old in the coachella Valley. last year there were over 2,100 runaway and homeless youth reported in riverside county. the shelter is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for teens facing domestic violence, drug

addiction, unplanned pregnancies, gender identity issues, suicide and even life on the street. Whether runaways or throwaways, these young people do not feel safe in their own homes. life on the street turns out to be even more dangerous. Fortunately there are places like safehouse that are there to help. We have 20 beds available including six permanent beds for victims of human trafficking. As founding members of the Riverside County Anti-Human Trafficking task Force, we are committed to rescuing and restoring the lives of these young boys and girls - our youngest being just twelve years old. We also offer a drug and alcohol-counseling program for youth.

SafeHouse serves over 750 young people annually through intervention, education, and counseling services. All of our services are available to teens and their families regardless of their income status and we strive to preserve and reunify families whenever possible.

We have outreach programs that focus on providing healthy lifestyles and emotional wellness through a number of different programs that include creative writing courses; open mic nights, youth leadership classes and LGBTQ support groups. We promote these activities through health fairs, school campuses, school clubs/organizations, Youth Opportunity Centers and local youth “hangouts. Harrison House a 22-bed apartment complex in Thousand Palms is home to our new Transitional Living Program. Our 18-month program is designed to support homeless young adults between 18 and 22 seeking the ability and motivation to become productive, independent, and self-sufficient citizens. Harrison House offers apartment homes to homeless young adults as we work together to strengthen their ability to financially support themselves, develop and maintain positive relationships, and set appropriate goals for their future self-sufficiency. To provide these services, SafeHouse of the Desert relies on grants, private donations and community support. The Pop Shop not only provides a revenue stream for programs and services, but our youth and young adults are able to use The POP Shop donations for necessary clothing and household needs. We also are able to offer job training at the store providing internships and income for a homeless young person. The POP Shop would love to accept your donations of gently used items. Your donations are tax deductible and your generosity will be providing shelter and counseling to young people in need. For more information about SafeHouse of the Desert please call Birgit at 760-343-3211. For more information on The POP Shop please contact Angela at 760-864-8681. Summer Store hours are: Monday-Saturday 10am to 5pm.

The very first Munich Pride (CSD) took place on June 28 1980 and we will celebrate our 34th anniversary with over 200,000 participants during this weeklong event. For further info www.csd-munich.de

Vietnam Pride Hanoi, Vietnam 2012 marked the first Pride festival in Vietnam, a country in which homosexuality remains taboo. For the first time ever, Vietnam saw the rainbow flag freely waving at its capital’s streets, bringing tears to the eyes of many Vietnamese LGBTs. Like Pride celebrations elsewhere in the world, Viet Pride joins the global call to end prejudice, discrimination, shame, and invisibility on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity. Together with Pride, the LGBT movement in Vietnam has never been stronger. www.vietpride.info

Acupuncture helps me manage my pain and tunes me up.

Miguel, D.A.P. client

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person Those little needles give me such relief, the way they reduce stress and anxiety, not to mention pain. I believe they activate my body’s electrical grid in a way that helps keep my viral load suppressed. It may not be for everyone but acupuncture has worked for me for 25 years. I’m grateful D.A.P. offers it as a complement to the primary and HIV-specialty care I get at their clinic.

This and more...all under one roof Thanks to your generous support, Desert AIDS Project has been saving lives for 30 years.
