Colton Ford The Way He Is By Chris Astrala

For most, Colton Ford needs no introduction. As one of the most well known names to come out of gay adult film, Colton Ford starred in several highly successful films over a short span of time, but music has always been his driving force. While other artists find the transition from the adult film industry to the mainstream to be complicated, if not impossible, Colton is one of the few who has successfully been able to do so. On the heels of his critically acclaimed third full-length album, The Way I am, the singer took a bit of a break to speak with The Standard Magazine.

Q&a |cover completely focused my attention on new opportunities that were popping up for me in mainstream entertainment. you were referring to my porn experience when asking about “the detour” right? :-) tS: yes i was (smile) and speaking of that, has it been difficult to get people to look beyond your experience in porn and focus more on your music? CF: I understand that there are people out there that have a really hard time with pornography and have strong moral issues with it. they’re entitled to feel that way. I don’t happen to have that issue, and I’m really looking to speak to those people who don’t have that struggle, and can see past that very brief part of my life to what else is going on. people who are more open and understand that we are all multi-faceted and can do many different things. I feel my music stands on it’s own. It’s not a residual of doing porn. and I sincerely appreciate all the people that get it and get me! the funny thing is that when I was doing porn, it felt like an extension of performing/ acting. you’re thrown into situations with people you don’t know and you want to make it all feel real so the viewer gets out of it what he (or she) is looking for. something hot! that’s entertainment. tS: in your second full-length album, under the Covers, you covered some great songs. how did you come about choosing the songs?

tS: First off, thank you for taking this time to talk to us, let’s get right to it. Many people may not know that before you were a porn star you were a singer and a recording artist, so i guess you can say you have come full circle. what lead to the detour? CF: of course! I’ve been in the music/entertainment industry for about 33 years and have always been creating and performing in some way, so that’s just been a constant in my life. the detour happened in tandem with my musical endeavors, and came unexpectedly. I was 39, not signed to a label at the time and felt my major label days were over because of my age, and I was trying to figure out what was next. The opportunity to take a side step came to me through my partner at the time, and the scene was with him so I felt comfortable having the experience (of course, I thought it all through before making the decision). It felt like an adventure that I was having with my partner...and some other people. lol. at that time I was in adventure mode and it just felt like an extension of that experience. I had been so focused on my career for so many years, sacrificing, enduring the fucking insanity of the music business, that it was fun to just let go and be a little naughty. I got everything out of the experience I needed and after 10 months I stopped and

CF: It was my manager, Bill Coleman’s idea. I had some songs that I wanted to do, and Bill had a bunch that he was feeling, several of which I wasn’t necessarily too familiar with. I was happily pulled into those songs and re-imagining the originals. It was fun, and one of the highlights was receiving an email from michael stipe thanking me for covering their song, “losing my religion,” and that they were honored. how fucking cool is that?! tS: that is pretty awesome. you’ve worked with some great artists and producers, who were your favorites and why? CF: Well every collaboration is a wonderful opportunity to explore and expand your abilities. It’s so enjoyable, and sharing in the creative process with others broadens everyone involved I think. I’ve enjoyed most of my collaborations through the years. tS: what inspires you to make music? CF: music. life. people. other artists. music is something I’m just very passionate about. a feeling I believe I came into this life with. tS: what would your dream musical collaboration be? CF: Well I really dig pharrell Williams, Will.i.am, love Babyface!

cover |Q&a tS: on august 23 you will be headlining big bear adventure weekend, have you previously performed at any bear events and if so what was your experience? CF: nope, unless you include my cousin and me sitting on the front porch of a cabin in Big Bear every summer in our childhood strumming our guitars and singing, “proud mary,” “Country roads,” and “leaving on a Jet plane.”

tS: what can the attendees of big bear adventure look forward to in your performance? CF: a Big Bear musical adventure! tS: 5 things the Standard Magazine readers may not know about you are: CF: 1.) I’m half armenian. 2.) I had a little crush on Bobby sherman when I was a kid (yeah, I’m dating myself). 3.) supposedly my great grandmother and Cher’s grandmother were sisters. 4.) I loVe rollercoasters. 5.) I loVe anything about the universe/space. tS: and lastly, if you had a crystal ball and could see your future, what would you like to see? CF: I’d take and break that crystal ball cuz I hate crystal ball questions! more interested in the now. :-)) thanks again Colton, best of luck in Big Bear and we’ll see you there!! Jonny McGovern Is All Gay Every Day

“Fans were always asking to know what happens on the set of a Jonny McGovern video,” says Skot Video, the Emmy nominated director of Jonny’s “Somethin’ For the Fellas (That Like The Fellas)” and “Man Areas” music videos. It was while filming “Man Areas” that Skot realized the potential for a full film. “There were so many succulent and sexy gentleman on set doing lots of slutty gay stuff, I figured why not give the fans what they’ve been begging for?” And so, The Gayest Video Special of All Time was born. The original intent was to air the special on television but the content proved too raunchy. “We filmed this for the fans; to give them a glimpse into a day in the life of an underground superstar. We had to release the DVD independently,” says Skot. The DVD includes six music videos from Jonny McGovern’s “The

Gayest of All Time” album, along with never before seen comedy sketches, uncensored behind-the-scenes access to the “Man Areas” music video and five hilarious clips from Jonny’s podcast. There is also plenty of music, and not only from Jonny, but from Team Pimp members Adam Joseph and drag diva Erickatoure. “Jonny’s universe is a very inclusive one”, says Skot. “Anyone of any size, color, sexual orientation, hell, even a Republican, can join in and have a good time.” Jonny “The Gay Pimp” McGovern’s career began in 2003 with Dirty Gay Hits, a collection of hilarious gay themed songs including “Soccer Practice” and “Lookin’ Cute/Feelin’ Cute”. But it was the Internet release of the “Soccer Practice” music video that made

Jonny an international phenomenon. The video introduced the world to the colorful antics of Jonny “The Gay Pimp” McGovern and his queer posse, dubbed “Team Pimp”. The music video received over three million downloads and was added to the rotation on MTV Europe and MTV Asia. The overwhelming success of “Soccer Practice” landed Jonny as a commentary contributor on a variety of VH1 shows including Best Week Ever, Totally Gay, and 40 Dumbest Celebrity Quotes. It also earned him a slot on Comedy Central’s all-gay stand-up show Out on the Edge, hosted by Alan Cumming, which brought him to the attention of Rosie O’Donnell, who cast Jonny as a lead player on her LOGO-TV comedy show, The Big Gay Sketch Show. In 2007, Jonny unleashed his second solo album, Gays Gone Wild. It was followed with 2008’s Keep it Faggity: The Gay Pimp Remix Project and 2012’s The Gayest of All Time with hits “Dickmatized”, “Sexy Nerd”, “Man Areas”, “#TOTDF” and “The Gayest of All Time”, all included on the new DVD.

The Glamour of d.r.a.g.

Coming soon to a Coffee Table near you By Len Evans

This month, Christopher Logan re-releases his remarkable coffee table book filled with photographs capturing the worlds most celebrated drag superstars by the industry’s leading photographers. Photos represent a wide spectrum of drag icons from underground drag royalty to the new breed of reality television stars. Included are Jeffree Star, shot by photographer Austin Young, Jimmy James as Marilyn Monroe by photographer Walter Melrose and Larry Edwards as Tina Turner by photographer Ninon Nguyen. The new edition of dr.a.g, with twenty never-before-seen images added is available for purchase now at bookstores or direct at www.BooktheFilm.com. “I’m thrilled to have been given a second chance to get this triumphant book out to the world,” says first-time author Christopher Logan from his home in Vancouver. “When the original publisher unexpectedly went out of business last year, I worried it might mean the final chapter for dr.a.g. I wasn’t ready to close the book! I picked up the phone and started mailing copies of the book to stores all over Canada and the USA. Somehow it landed in the right hands and a new distributor stepped up to re-launch dr.a.g.” “This time around I know more,” he continues. “I learned from the first release that even after you’ve created something beautiful, there’s much more work to do. It’s just like drag: first, you paint. Then… you better work.” The idea for dr.a.g. stemmed from Logan’s filmmaking aspirations. “I had written a film on drag and was looking for a fun way to fund it,” he explains. “A book seemed the perfect vehicle because funds would come from people who enjoyed the subject

matter. Also the book might create awareness for the film and maybe help build an audience eager to see it.” Logan’s own career in drag began in Hollywood and eventually landed him on the big screen, in the Nia Vardalos and Toni Collette drag comedy, Connie and Carla. The role helped to raise his profile within the drag community; something that came in handy when he set out to create the book. When selecting images, he looked for artists and photographers that exhibited their own distinct flair. He chose photographer Austin Young (whose image of Jeffree Star appears on the cover of dr.a.g.) for his edgy yet brightly colored pin-up photos. Photographer Magnus Hastings was selected for his unique ability to mix sensuality with glamour, Peter Palladino for his stunning tableau-like effects and San Francisco’s Jose A Guzman Colon for his down and dirty images. Logan also sought lesser-known photographers like Ann Brown whose classic images depict a quirky sensibility and Dusti Cunningham whose photos bend towards old Hollywood. Logan says his intention was to show the diversity in drag today. “Early drag was campier. It was more about poking fun of iconic Hollywood divas. Today’s drag is more outrageous. They strive to be celebrities in their own right. As long as drag continues to push boundaries, I believe there is room for all varieties.” Twenty never-before-seen images have been added to the new edition of dr.a.g. Some are photos that ‘fell through the cracks’ the

specifically sought other Puerto Rican performers for the book. Through Sofia and photographer Edwin Irizarry, Logan discovered Queen Bee Ho and Valeria Mendez, two of the new faces in the second edition. He views the book as aspirational. “These are amazing performers, make up artists, stylists, and photographers. They are examples of how good drag can be when artists take the time to learn the craft and respect it.” Logan hopes that by viewing dr.a.g. the world will develop a greater respect for the art. He remains anxious to get his drag film to the big screen.

In the meantime, he is hard at work on the next book in his series. It will be a companion piece to drag featuring the top burlesque stars. He is also in the early stages of planning a documentary on Polari, a gay language, to be filmed in London. The second edition of Christopher Logan’s’ dr.a.g is available for purchase now on Amazon.com. For more information, visit http://bookthefilm.com.

book review

Always Overbooked… By Terri Schlichenmeyer

So a guy walks into a bar and… Okay, you say you’ve heard that one. Well, then, how ‘bout this: There once was a man from Nantucket who… Wait, how does an elephant hide in the refrigerator? Either you’re laughing now, or you’re not – so why are some things funny, while others are just ridiculous? Why is it that what was hilarious to Grandpa barely raises a “huh” from you? Read the new book “Ha!” by Scott Weems and find out. Chimps do it. Dogs, birds, and rats do it. And you laugh, too, up to twenty times a day. To understand why, Weems says you need to recognize “the massive complexity of the human brain” and its reliance on conflict. The matter inside your noggin, as it turns out, deals with confusion and mess all the time. There’s a constant “battle” between feelings and thoughts, and when we hear or see something funny, it adds a bit of surprise and discomfort. “Laughter,” says Weems “is simply what happens as we work through the details.” It surely helps that when we laugh, our brains are flooded with dopamine. We feel good, and we want to share it with those around us. There’s a reason for TV laugh tracks, in other words. Some researchers have proven that the best jokes are 103 words long. Others have said that there are more than 40 “kinds” of humor, including “sick humor” (Weems calls that a “means of addressing our feelings”), humor that helps people cope (what doctors use in the ER), irony, and satire. Yes, our senses of humor change as we age (“elephant jokes” probably aren’t as funny to you as they were when you were a first-grader) and women laugh more than men do. You can even predict personality and political preference by what someone finds funny. But despite the fact that Bible scholars still debate over whether Jesus ever laughed and historical leaders tried to outlaw it, humor is good for us. Laughing burns calories, it’s good for the heart, it suppresses glucose, improves allergies, and lessens arthritis pain. It can “protect” us from stress, improves our quality of life, and “simply understanding jokes makes us funnier people.” And that’s a curious statement when you consider that “Ha!” isn’t very funny. No, it’s more of a science-y book that lives up to its subtitle (“The Science of When We Laugh and Why”) – making it serious, but still entertaining. That’s because author Scott Weems melds brain science with corny jokes and factoids to delight readers who’ve ever wondered

18 theStandardps.com

why one thing tickles their funny bones, but not the other. There are times, admittedly, when the science part got too heavy-duty for me, but the info on why humor works (or doesn’t) is good, and I loved the subtle lessons on how to make more laughter. Don’t expect this book to crack you up. You’ll find other things to do that, and this will explain why. For anyone who’s ever ROFL, “Ha!” just raises the bar.

Lesbian veteran challenges Idaho to be buried with her late wife After her wife died, 74-year-old Navy Veteran Madelynn Taylor went to the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery to make arrangements so the two could eventually be buried together. But she was turned away. Madelynn, with the help of NCLR and Boise attorneys Deborah A. Ferguson and Craig Durham, filed a lawsuit this month challenging Idaho state laws banning her from being buried with her late wife, Jean Mixner, who she married in California in 2008. The lawsuit argues that Idaho’s laws prohibiting same-sex couples from marrying and recognizing the marriages of samesex couples performed in other states violates the United States Constitution’s guarantees of equal protection and due process. “Idaho is where some of our best memories together are and it’s where I want to spend eternity with Jean,” Madelynn said. “I could be buried here alone, but I don’t want to be alone. I want Jean with me forever.” The lawsuit follows a landmark marriage equality victory in Idaho. On May 13, Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Candy W. Dale ordered the State of Idaho to allow same-sex couples to marry and to recognize the marriages of couples who married in other states after four same-sex couples challenged state laws. The couples in that case are also represented by NCLR and attorneys Ferguson and Durham. Idaho Governor Butch Otter and Attorney General Lawrence Wasden have appealed Judge Dale’s decision to the Ninth Circuit.

The appeal will be argued on September 8 in San Francisco, California. www.nclrights.org

engagement. The cardinal then sent the church’s pastor an email calling for Collette’s resignation, he says. When he refused to resign, he was fired. Collette said the church’s pastor knew he was gay, and had attended dinners with the couple. In a written statement Wednesday, Archdiocese of Chicago officials said they were aware of the action taken by Keehan. After pointing out it doesn’t comment on individual personnel issues, the Archdiocese said those serving as ministers, including worship

ministers, are “expected to conform their lives publicly with the teachings of the church.” Collette is not the first layperson fired by the Catholic Church in retaliation for marrying a same-sex partner. Earlier this year, Brian Panetta was forced to resign from his job as band and choir director at a Catholic school in Sandusky, Ohio, after officials learned he and his boyfriend became engaged to be married. In May, Flint Dollar, a band director at Mount de Sales Academy in Macon, Ga., was also fired after announcing plans to marry his partner.

And in Missouri, Colleen Simon, a parish food pantry worker, is suing the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph for firing her after her same-sex marriage was mentioned in a local article; Simon said she told the church of her marriage before she was hired. New Ways Ministry, a Catholic gay rights group, has found more than 15 cases since 2010 of U.S. teachers, school administrators or parish musicians who lost jobs or resigned after expressing support for gay marriage or going public with their own same-sex relationships. Several of the former employees have sued. AP contributed to this report.

GLAAD film industry report card reveals lack of LGBT visibility In its second annual report card on LGBT representation in motion pictures, media advocacy group GLAAD gives the film industry a mostly failing grade. GLAAD’s Studio Responsibility Index (SRI), a report that maps the quantity, quality and diversity of images of LGBT people in films released by the seven largest motion picture studios during the 2013 calendar year, found that of the 102 releases from the major studios in 2013, only 17 of them included characters identified as LGBT. The majority of these characters were minor roles or cameos, said GLAAD, and many of these were outright defamatory representations in films such as “Pain & Gain” and “Riddick.” “The lack of substantial LGBT characters in mainstream film, in addition to the outdated humor and stereotypes suggests large Hollywood studios may be doing more harm than good when it comes to worldwide understanding of the LGBT community,” said GLAAD’s CEO and President Sarah Kate Ellis. “These studios have the eyes and ears of millions of audience members, and should reflect the true fabric of our society rather than feed into the hatred and prejudice against LGBT people too often seen around the globe,” she said. Key findings from the report released last week: Out of the 102 releases GLAAD counted from the major studios in 2013, 17 of them (16.7%) contained characters identified as either lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Last year, GLAAD counted 14 inclusive films, however this is also the first year that Lionsgate Entertainment was included in the tally. Lionsgate released 3 inclusive films in 2013.

More than half of those inclusive films (64.7%) featured gay male characters, while another 23.5% featured lesbian characters, 17.7% contained bisexual characters, and 11.8% contained transgender female characters (better described as impressions). Male LGBT characters outnumbered female characters 64% to 36%.

Of the 25 different characters counted (many of whom were onscreen for no more than a few seconds), 19 were white (76%) while only 3 were Black/African American (12%), 2 were Asian/ Pacific Islander (8%), and 1 was Latino (4%). The most common place to find LGBT characters in the major studios’ 2013 releases were in comedies, where 8 of the 19 total comedies GLAAD counted (42.1%) were inclusive. By comparison, 43 genre films (action, sci-fi, fantasy, etc.) made up the majority of the 2013 releases, though only 4 (9.3%) of those contained any LGBT characters. Additionally, 5 of 28 dramas (17.9%) were inclusive, while there were no LGBT characters in any animated or family-oriented films or documentaries from the seven studios tracked. Both Paramount and Warner Brothers received “failing” grades for including only minor and offensive portrayals of LGBT people in their 2013 releases. 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Universal Pictures, Walt Disney Studios received grades of “adequate.” Sony Columbia was the first and only studio to receive a “good” score for several LGBT-inclusive films, including Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which was the only film tracked in the report that was also nominated for a GLAAD Media Award. No studio has yet received a grade of “excellent.”

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Same-Sex Marriage Down the Primrose Path By Christopher Heritage

It’s been a year since the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision allowed federal recognition of same-sex marriages. The LGBT community is still rejoicing, and with great energy, is pushing ahead for equal rights in all the other aspects of our lives. What have I seen in my practice this year? Many committed same-sex couples getting married - some quietly, some with joyous celebrations, and a few with reckless and thoughtless abandon. Most have lots of questions about what the legal and financial effects of marriage will be. Those who have come to me for answers are eager to “do things right” and protect themselves and their future. Some, who rush into marriage without thinking, or without understanding the consequences, may not make it into the future together. Here are a few of the questions and issues I have worked with recently: 1. If we marry, does everything we own become community property? That depends on how you own the property before you marry, and how you agree to acquire new property after you marry. Do you already have joint bank and investment accounts? Do you own your house as joint tenants? Do you share legal title on your car? It is likely that these will be considered community property once you marry. If you are Registered Domestic Partners, you are already subject to community property rules, and marriage will not change that. 2. We own a checking account together, and furniture and things in the house, but we want to keep our investments and other property separate after we marry. I want to stay owner of our house. How can we do that?

The very best way is to create a pre-marital agreement that clearly identifies each person’s separate property and the couple’s shared property. This agreement will also state who will own new property acquired by either or both after marriage. Both partners agree that all property will be covered under the agreement during the marriage. And if there should be a breakup in the future, there will be little or nothing to argue about when dividing up their assets and debts. A pre-marital agreement usually must be signed by both parties at least seven days before the date of marriage, so it is not something that can be put off until the last minute. 3. We just want to be sure that once we are married there won’t be any problems with everyone recognizing that we are now legally responsible for each other. You will have your marriage license, if anyone asks. But in most states in the U.S., this will be meaningless. In spite of federal recognition of same-sex marriages, they are only legal in 19 states

august, 2014 25

LeGaLLy speakIng and the district of Columbia right now. In all the other states, lawsuits are pending, but will not be quickly resolved. If you travel to other countries, most do not recognize marriage equality at all, and some criminalize homosexual behavior of any kind. For legal protection, married and unmarried same-sex couples should have all the important documents that spell out the rights of partners and spouses to make personal and medical decisions in case of emergency, incapacity or death. at a minimum, there should be an advance health Care directive, and a means to provide this immediately to medical and other professionals in an emergency. you may not want to carry the actual documents around with you all the time, so there are some excellent organizations that store them for you electronically, and can provide them 24/7, any day of the year. We provide this service to most of our clients. you are issued an emergency access card, the size of a credit card, to carry in your pocket or wallet. It provides the information necessary to access your documents right away. this can give partners and spouses a solid legal foundation for their relationship, and peace of mind, no matter where in the world they might be.

4. My old partner and i were registered domestic partners (rdp) years ago, and then split up. now i am going to marry my new partner. will this be a problem? unfortunately, yes. you are not free to marry a different person until your rdp is terminated. In nearly all cases, you are required to file for a dissolution (divorce), just as if you had been married. You must file a petition with the court, and go through the process of serving notice to your old partner, dividing up assets and debts, and agreeing to a settlement of your affairs that the court will find is fair for both of you. a dissolution can take anywhere from 6 to 8 months to a year or two, depending on the amount of cooperation between partners in getting all the paperwork filed, and any disagreement as to how to settle things. this article is part of an ongoing series of articles pertaining to legal issues relevant to the lgBt community, and is intended for general information purposes only – not legal advice. fitness

First Things First By Dennis Mason, BFA, CPT Health and fitness in body, mind and spirit are the greatest goals you can ever hope to achieve in your lifetime. Without these achievements, all else you do with your life will be less than what you could have done. This concept is way ahead of fame, fortune and glory. Yet, if you just stop and look around, you’ll find that not very many other people reach those goals nor even think about them at all. Most of the people you see around you have become fairly proficient at their respective endeavors in life, such as their jobs, family and the acquisition of material things. The same does not appear to be true for the overall fitness level of a person. In fact, it has deteriorated increasingly over the past few decades. Clearly, two out of every three people you see today…men, women and children included…are overweight and/or obese. News reports and research studies abound with the news of increased cancer, heart disease, diabetes and a whole list of other diseases that lurk beneath the reckless abandonment of the body. I have been reporting and writing about this issue over the course of my career, and in spite of what we have learned scientifically and medically over that period, the recklessness still continues. The idea that your job and/or financial wealth are more important than your health has grown totally out of proportion. Flipping houses for profit has become more important than taking the time to eat properly and get lots of rigorous exercise. Greed and lust for things have taken over our lives and gluttony has become a symbol for power and success in life. I’m not suggesting that making money or working at your job is less important than your health. However, I do know that you will be more successful at whatever you do if you factor in and balance out your life with good nutrition and exercise. If you stop and think about it, you will see that everything still comes back to the fact that “you are what you eat and how often you exercise”. I’ve been actively involved in health and physical fitness for over four decades. During that time I have engaged in academic as well as self-study in the field of wellness. It doesn’t take a PhD to figure out that a diet made up of wholesome, natural food combined with regular rigorous exercise produces optimum performance within the human mind and body. Additionally, outward projections such

as anger, anxiety and depression are greatly reduced. The whole concept of staying healthy and in shape certainly sounds like a logical game plan to me. Yet, ignorance of facts continues in this “the greatest age of information” we have ever known. So, practice some introspection and see how you can handle “First Things First” in YOUR life. You will be glad you did. Diabetes Let Food Be Thy Medicine By Linda Larrowe Bergersen, MS

Type 2 diabetes can be cured! There! I’ve said it. Why, in our modern society where this disease is the seventh leading cause of death, does such a statement get suppressed from the general public?

indeed have type 2 diabetes, instructing the patient to lower sugar consumption, yet will need to take diabetic medications the rest of his or her life.

Both major health entities, medical professionals and Big Pharma, fail to get the word out that with nutritional guidance combined with patient motivation, type 2 diabetes can be reversed. But the word is beginning to get out. Some of the prominent physicians who are in the forefront of speaking out about reversing diabetes include Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Dr. Mark Hyman, and Dr. John McDougall – all not afraid to say the word cure. It can be done, and they have done it. Diabetes is not a bug we catch. Most of us know it’s the foods we eat that create the dysfunction within, but it’s the elephant in the room; some don’t know what an elephant is, but most just do not want to look at it. Let me offer two main conceivable reasons why the public isn’t being told:

2. The strong-arm pharmaceutical companies want their diabetes drugs to continue bringing in billions.

1. Curing it involves natural nutrition (without the help of drugs), something the medical community knows about and does little with. The typical scenario is doctor discovering that the patient does

28 theStandardps.com

Advertisement spending by the pharmaceutical industry was $2.4 billion in 2011, as reported by Nielsen TV. The diabetes drug Lantus had total sales of $7.8 billion in 2013. The forecast for the worldwide diabetes market is $47.2 billion by 2017. This falsehood of only being able to ‘maintain’ the disease for the life of the patient is also unfortunately perpetuated by every major diabetes organization. Upon visiting their websites -- the American Diabetes Association, The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, and Diabetic Living Magazine -- the common theme throughout is that there is no cure for diabetes. The American Diabetes Association’s website (diabetes.org) proclaims, “diabetes is a chronic disease that has no cure,” and “Eating well-balanced meals is an essential part of taking better

care of yourself and managing diabetes.” Instead of advising that diabetics stop eating refined grains and sugars, the suggestion on their site is: “Save money by buying less soda, sweets and chips or other snack foods.” The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation claims they are “the best hope for cure.” They offer many suggestions on managing diabetes, but not how to overcome it. “There is a lot you can do to stay well and remain healthy with diabetes.” Diabetic Living website gives recipes that include refined sugar and refined flour, as well as artificial whipped toppings and the like. Even Webmd.com tells us, after all the research and advances in diabetic treatments, ‘there is no cure for type 1 nor type 2 diabetes.’ Being privy to successful turnarounds myself with my diabetic clients, I can say it definitely is possible. Being honest, even though it can be done by changes in diet and lifestyle, it is a struggle for many to get there, as well as a struggle to stay there; half of them will most likely revert because resistance to the outside influences and offerings of the restaurants, food manufacturing companies and supermarkets is difficult. It requires diligence and dedication to stay on the wagon for those who have been diabetic for so long, and therefore can fall off the wagon at any time. It’s no different for those on the brink of diabetes currently who are continuing to eat refined foods, and soon will join the club. But when patients learn the whys of diabetes, and the horrible consequences of the disease, by rights the incentive should be there. The culprits behind the onset of diabetes are most definitely refined, processed foods. These include refined sugars, refined flours and refined oils. It’s the bakery goods, the hamburger and hotdog buns, and the foods deep-fried in trans fats and additives of highly processed oils. These surround us at all times in restaurants

and supermarkets, and because of convenience, we fall for it. What also contributes is a lack of fresh fruit and vegetable fiber that so many avoid in their meals. As with smoking, to quit is to quit. To cure diabetes, quitting all refined foods is a must. In various reports, there is a definite correlation between the introduction and proliferation of high fructose corn syrup, the rise in polyunsaturated fats, and the decline of animal fats, and the rise in diabetes. In 2012, over one-third of our children were overweight or obese; 80-90% of type 2 diabetics are overweight or obese, which explains the recent popularity of the term diabesity. It’s these influences all around us that make it so difficult to maintain a healthy body. This is why it comes back to us individually to be mindful of what we put into our bodies. The task of preparing more and more of our own foods is more important than ever. The medical community should be in the forefront of directing patients toward better, natural foods, and, if need be, advising that any diabetic contact a certified nutritionist to help guide them away from diabetes. Any doctor who is still writing the prescriptions for diabetes drugs for their patients at the onset of discovering elevated blood sugar, and not offering advice on food and nutrition, needs to refresh his or her memory of a quote from Hippocrates, considered to be the father of western medicine: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

Thank You, Mr. President!

By Dr. Kenneth Toth, BA, MAT, DC, RN, CPT

Can you all believe what has been happening all around us, not only in this country, but also around the planet regarding LGBT human rights? Full citizenship is finally being bestowed upon all of us by our government. Up until this momentous time, we have all been paying our taxes as required by law to help support all the institutions that heterosexuals have pretty much controlled, and within which, we have often been discriminated against in the most unhealthy and punitive ways. Over the years, in a majority of states, many of our jobs have been in constant jeopardy. Recent research has suggested that LGBT US citizens have had their lives shortened on average anywhere from 9 to 14 years, due to stress, if we have lived/worked in an inhospitable (think homophobic) community or environment. In short, if we are to give credence to the research, our lives have absolutely been cut short by homophobic discrimination and outright bigotry. It has been generally unhealthy for us, our children, and our brave attempts to succeed with family, our basic need to love whom we love, and our ability to contribute openly and meaningfully to our country with our talents. Thank you, President Obama, for taking the very strong lead in opening up the door to true civil rights for all in this great country and in the world at large. Yes, there are many tireless people, organizations, and corporations who had already laid much of the groundwork for this momentous time of change. But it really took the incredible stand of a sitting US President to stand up taller than life and declare that enough was enough, and that our country had to take serious and meaningful steps toward standing up for all Americans. Yes, a stand was made based on truth, logic, real science, decency and reason. No longer was our country to continue sitting by and waiting until the homophobic citizenry was “comfortable” with humanitarian change. No longer were we to sit outside the national conversation and be sickened by homophobes for the most part coopting and “using” the Christian Bible quite effectively as the reason and justification why it was a good thing, even a Godly calling, to persecute LGBT people just as they had done in the case of AfricanAmericans before the 1968 Civil Rights Act. Again, it was a sitting US President, Lyndon Baines Johnson, who stood up and declared that we were no longer going to tolerate two Americas: one for whites and one for blacks. No longer was America to tolerate the insane, oxymoronic doublespeak of so-called “separate but equal”. However, the fight is not over. President Obama has been single-handedly opening the door more and more. But it’s also our responsibility to take his efforts, and all those people’s efforts

before him, seriously. It’s now incumbent upon us to end the cowering and hiding and lying about who we really are, and walk with pride through that opened door. Now, we continue to hear more homophobic lies about how the fictitious “gay agenda” is trying to destroy the very institution of marriage as well as the morals of our country. Such irrational spew doesn’t even deserve a rebutting comment. We all still need to look very deeply within and dig out all of our own internalized homophobia that has been insidiously offered to us over the decades as “comfort food”. More than ever, we need to stand tall and strong in the knowledge that we are not almost as good as, but just as good as, every other citizen of this great country. We have no intelligent reason to feel in any manner less than any other American citizen. But we do have every intelligent reason to, as Harvey Milk said, “Come out, come out!” Thank you, President Obama, for working so hard and effectively to create and support one America for all citizens, both gay and straight!

Why Salt Is Healthy For You By Thomas Cho

For years salt has earned a reputation for being unhealthy. We’re told that consuming too much salt causes high blood pressure, stroke and heart failure. But what if I told you that’s all rubbish? That consuming salt has the reverse effect and is actually beneficial for you. Stay with me and I’ll start to make more sense. The Salt We Have Come To Know The Dangers of Table Salt. Salt is essential for life. It was considered so important that the Romans were paid in salt (the word salary actually comes from the root “sale”). It helps to stabilize our pH levels, regulate blood pressure and transport nutrients in and out of your cells. Salt is vital for the proper function of most of your organs. Salt is found naturally in water and in rock. It’s a natural mineral composed of an abundance of trace elements. In earlier years people received their salt intake by licking the rocks or eating seaweed from bodies of salt water. As time went on and people broke away from these practices new ways were developed to get salt into our body. But when we talk about salt these days, we’re usually talking about table salt. That’s a whole different kettle of fish all together. What’s Wrong With Table Salt? The salt that we used to consume is not what it is nowadays. Processes were developed for acquiring salt by heating salt water

34 theStandardps.com

or making brine with salt rock. The problem with the heating processes is that it strips out important alkaline minerals and electrolytes and alters its crystalline structure. So when you consume table salt, you’re getting a massive hit of sodium chloride. While the important nutrients are removed, other ingredients are added to aid in flow and reduce clumping. It’s also bleached because natural salt is not white and not only that it often contains MSG (mono-sodium glutamate)! MSG is known to cause heart attacks in those who do not have enough magnesium. Why would you put MSG in table salt? Who knows? Due to the loss of minerals in table salt that would normally lower blood pressure we have a society full of people with high blood pressure. Other health issues linked with table salt include neurological disorders, water retention, diabetes, gout, obesity, addictiveness, kidney, liver and thyroid issues. Individuals may experience hypertension, heart disease, muscle cramps, stroke and major nervous systems disorders. The Other Problem Oh and there’s another problem. Most of us are consuming way too much salt from processed foods, sometimes over 80 per cent! The salt found in these foods is pure sodium not natural salt, very different as you can now see. When you ingest pure sodium or table salt without the trace elements that give it balance, you’re putting undue pressure on your body to get rid of it. According to Dr Mercola, every gram of excess sodium chloride your body has to neutralize uses up 23 grams of cellular water. Therefore, eating too much common processed salt will cause fluid to accumulate in your tissues, which contributes to unsightly cellulite, rheumatism, arthritis and gout and kidney and gall bladder stones.

A Better Salt Choice Himalayan salt is an excellent choice for those seeking a natural salt. Sea salt is also good but I believe our oceans are much more polluted than our mountains so it’s one less risk. Himalayan salt should be a light pink color, this is due to the fact that it contains all 84 elements found in our body. Iodine is beneficial for a healthy thyroid and occurs naturally in salt that is not processed. All the health issues you could experience with table salt are eliminated with Himalayan salt. Plus this salt will help in detoxing the body of heavy metals and may help to reduce signs of ageing. By using Himalayan salt our bodies rehydrate better, balance our pH levels and electrolytes much more effectively than regular table salt. Key Takeaways Was that an eye opener? Here are some key points. All salt is not equal! Consuming the correct salt will heal you, not hurt you. Make salt your friend, not your enemy. Consider switching to Himalayan salt or sea salt for your health.

Amtrak

Yes, A Great Way to Travel to The Cool Northwest By George Zander

OK, this article may surprise you, but hear me out! This grizzly former travel agent (for about 30 years) has travelled on trains throughout the globe. Thanks largely to Republicans in Congress, our passenger trains service does, shall we say, not rank with the fine trains of Europe, Asia, Australia, South Africa, Canada and much of Latin America. That being said, Amtrak has great, dedicated and fun employees, a relaxed atmosphere and is a decent and diverse company. If you are headed to the great Pacific Northwest, this is so much better than driving the evil I-5. Plus you can have cocktails and no one has to drive. The Coast Starlight, which departs at 10 am everyday from beautiful Los Angeles Union Station, is a relaxing, fun and easy way to go.

36 theStandardps.com

The train will go all the way from Los Angeles to Seattle, but many folks will stop in various festive spots. You can stop at Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo (with access to San Simeon by rental car), Salinas (with a cab, bus, or rental car connection to the Monterey Peninsula), San Jose or Emeryville with connections to San Francisco, Eugene, Portland and Seattle. In Seattle you can connect to Vancouver, BC. This connection leads to many rail adventures including the Trans Canada Railway to Toronto. By then, you will be sold on train travel. Assuming you and your traveling companions are not in a hurry, this is a fine way to travel between major west coast destinations. You will see the country up close and view the midnight stars from the Vista Domes before you turn in to your cozy little room. Even the coach seats are better than flying. The train uses double-decker superliner I & II equipment,

including a Sightseer Lounge car that has floor-to-ceiling windows to enjoy the passing scenery. From Los Angeles to San Jose much of the way you see the Pacific. The Coast Starlight is unique in the Amtrak system, as it includes a first-class lounge car called the Pacific Parlor Car. Called a “living room on rails, the Parlor car offers several amenities to first-class sleeping car passengers including wireless Internet access, a full bar, a small library with books and games, an afternoon wine tasting, and a movie theater on the lower level. Reserve your sleeping car at least two months prior, as this route is very popular in summer. Folks reported recently that everything in the bedroom worked fine but the rooms are mighty tight. The tiny bathroom and pot-sized sink reminded them of a small camper. The beds were adequate. Service from the attendant was very good and always responsive. An early tip to him right after boarding helped ensure that they dined on upgraded gourmet cuisine as often as possible in the separate Parlor car. All other cars, such as the Vista Dome and club cars were also fun and very entertaining. Reading a book, or magazine and watching the scenery fly by always reminds you and your companions that they are more relaxed

than driving the freeways. The best thing about the Coast Starlight will be the fellow passengers. You will meet many friendly, fellow travelers during your dining and scenery-watching experiences. But having your own bedroom allows you to escape and be alone as well. The decision to return by train as well depends on how much time you have, but of course there are flights back to the Desert from Vancouver, Seattle, Portland and other stopping points. Be sure to book hotel rooms in Los Angeles and your destination as well as all the stop over points so you can relax everywhere along your journey. Do not forget the hotel room in Los Angeles for a couple of nights, since promptness of arrivals is not going be something that you can count upon! Enjoy this relaxing and great escape.

Lesbian Hero Nancy Garden By Lee Lynch

People all over the world were heartbroken to hear of Nancy Garden’s death in June. The Golden Crown Literary Society (GCLS) was only weeks from presenting her an award for her beloved 1982 novel Annie On My Mind. Thousands upon thousands of kids worldwide found understanding of themselves or others by reading the classic young adult romance between two teenage girls. Annie made a difference in adult lives too. I fell in love with the book in my forties; what a comfort it would have been to read it at age 15! Nancy grew up in New England and New York. She worked in publishing and wrote ten books before Annie, thirty-five in all. Her lifelong partner, Sandra Scott, survives her. According to her website, Annie On My Mind was banned by the Kansas City school system in 1993 and burned in demonstrations. Courageous students brought a First Amendment lawsuit in 1995 and won two years later. Not to be deterred, Nancy began yet another career and became an avid speaker on First Amendment rights. Members of GCLS were slightly comforted that she knew ahead of time about her award and her work continues to be celebrated, and by lesbians. In her speech of thanks, she wrote about the impact

38 theStandardps.com

on her of Radclyffe Hall’s 1928 novel The Well of Loneliness. She said, “[The Well] ends with an impassioned plea for justice and understanding. That plea made me vow, at 16 or so, to write a book one day for and about my people that told the truth about who we are –and ended happily.” That was my early story too; I found the same ambition and inspiration from Hall’s book. I had the opportunity to work with Nancy’s GCLS acceptance speech, inserting her handwritten Nancy Garden 1938 – 2014 edits. There is no way to express how moved I was to be trusted with the task, to handle her words. What an incredible honor, experience and sad pleasure.

there were no nancy garden books when I was 16, but annie has been around for other lesbians for 30 plus years. I wondered what readers might say about the book today and thought I’d let them speak for themselves here. their twitter comments over the past few years attest to the amazing longevity and power of nancy garden’s enchanting and enlighten storytelling. “this is so dumb but I found a copy of annie on my mind at the library in seventh grade and was horri-fascinated by the cover & stole it. “I see why this book has been so frequently challenged & I adore it all the more!” “did you discover annie on my mind as a teen at the public library, like me? Were you scared to check it out, but did anyway?” “the reaction of liza’s friends, of her family, or her teachers, of her school to the character being gay ...garden made it so real, and I couldn’t help but cry at how unjust it was. Because even though this is a piece of fiction, it has actually happened to so many people. It was awful, but garden captured that cruelty and misjudgment perfectly.”

author katherine applegate, winner of the newbery medal, left banned book annie on my mind in an airport luggage cart with the following note, “Free to a good mind” author karin kallmaker: “It’s World Book day! I recommend a banned book - read something dangerous! annie on my mind by nancy garden comes to mind. lots of really narrow-minded people have tried for decades to make sure you can’t read it. screw ‘em! read it!” nancy garden’s annie on my mind is one of the most Important #lgBt teen novels ever written. author lesléa newman tweeted: “paying homage to nancy garden by re-reading annie on my mind. It’s so good! no wonder it’s a classic.” last, a reader tweeted: “annie on my mind saved a part of my soul.” thank you, nancy garden.
