The President’s View: A Cresswind Renewal Welcome back to the Cresswind we all knew and loved. After many months of sequestering, sheltering in place, absence of all of the many relationships we all cherished and missed, Cresswind is returning to the normalcy we have all been seeking with a vengeance. We, Cresswind Strong, have weathered the worst of times in recent memory to renew again our friendships, activities, travels, and the long-awaited events we have enjoyed. As we emerge from the shadows, albeit with some cautions and many vaccinations, we are returning to the Clubhouse, outdoor and indoor amenities, card games, and our missed family get togethers. The tenor around Cresswind has taken on a more vibrant spirit – a much missed air of enthusiasm and community engagement and gatherings. What we may have taken for granted as a sought-after active retirement lifestyle in our Community on hold too long has re-emerged for all to enjoy and celebrate. Whether walking and chatting with friends, participating in Community or area activities or just enjoying the new found freedoms and our collective retirement years, it is so wonderful to return to what we all truly cherish. It is my belief that we have endured individual and community hardships as well as or better that most communities I have been in touch with over the past 15 months. Many still have not returned to the level of activity and engagement we are currently experiencing. I hope we do not forget that we may continue to face difficult periods in our lives going forward and whether they be as broad based as the recent pandemic or more localized such as personal illnesses or hardships, our Community has the stamina and means to side by side support each other throughout those trying and difficult times. We have shown that by our deeds and actions. May all be blessed with good health and many happy retirement years to look forward toward, be there for each other, and help to make Cresswind the Best It Can Be. Let us continue to celebrate the remainder of 2021 with engagement and enthusiasm. Regards, Dan Gershkowitz

… from the Desk of Kitti Kleinedler At one time or another every resident has received a copy of the Cresswind LL Rules and Regulations booklet. The most current version can be found on the Cresswind at LL website. All residents are expected to be aware of the rules and guidelines and to abide by them. So, I thought it might be a good thing to highlight some of the lesser quoted rules. Did you know that . . . • Fireworks are not permitted anywhere within the Amenity Complex or the community. p.15 • After every event, the club, class, or individual resident sponsoring the event (point of contact) will assess the area and ensure the cleaning and restoration to its original condition. p.17 • No reptiles, animals, livestock or poultry of any kind may be raised, bred, kept or permitted on any lot, with the exception of dogs, cats or other usual and common household pets not to exceed two (2) of any one type in number. p.47 • Sports team flags are acceptable on weekend game days (Friday through Sunday.) p.58 • All radon mitigation installations require an ARC Application and written approval. p.65 • Holiday lighting displays may be installed within thirty days before the holiday and are to be re moved withing fifteen days after the holiday has ended. p.71 • Residents and guests may not swim or dive within, to or from the Cresswind Marina. p.81 • Golf cart or motorized vehicle operators must be at least sixteen years of age and have a valid state -issued driver’s license and be able to provide proof of insurance. p.91
Living in an HOA ensures a certain standard of lifestyle, but it requires that everyone abide by the “Law of the Land.” Here are a couple more “laws” that I have noticed people bending lately. • The dumpster by the clubhouse is not for resident use. Any items placed on the ground inside the enclosure will not be picked up. • Dogs and pets (except service animals) are not allowed within the Amenity Complex which includes the back event lawn. • Golf carts are not to be driven or parked on sidewalks/walkways and turf throughout the community including those common areas adjacent to amenities unless permission is granted by the management staff.
Keeping Cresswind an extraordinary place to live takes cooperation and a little flexibility from all residents. Some rules may be contrary to one’s personal wishes, but they were made with the idea of what is best for most. Let’s work together to keep Cresswind Strong! and a wonderful, beautiful place to live.
Welcome to Cresswind!

Resident News From the… CLL Emergency & Disaster Response Planning Work Group By John Stevens
“What Should You Do If…a Tornado is Coming” The Education Committee and the Cresswind Community Emergency & Disaster Response Planning work-group (EDRP-WG) provided an interactive presentation with Casey Ramsey, our Hall County Emergency Management Director on Wednesday, May 12th in the Ballroom. Roughly 40 residents attended this 2-hour event. EMD Ramsey talked about what we can do to be prepared for the possibility of a tornado hitting our community, and how to help ourselves and help each other if such an event should occur. EMD Ramsey showed some video footage of the aftermath from the March 26, 2021 tornado that hit Newnan, GA, which is located roughly 90 miles southwest of Gainesville as a reminder that tornados can and do happen here in
Georgia, and that knowing what to do before and after a tornado strike will help us be ‘survivors’ rather than just victims in the event that our community incurs a tornado hit. To help our residents remain alert and vigilant to the possibility of severe and potentially damaging local weather events, EMD Ramsey provided each resident in attendance a complimentary Weather-Alert Radio pre-programmed for receiving Hall County weather alerts. EMD Ramsey’s presentation was recorded on video and is available on the CLL website. This program was the first of several community disaster readiness and response programs being developed by the Cresswind Community Emergency & Disaster Response Planning work-group (EDRPWG), in partnership with the CLL Education Committee. For more information about the CLL Emergency & Disaster Response Planning Work Group, and/ or to train as a response-ready resident-volunteer, please contact John Stevens and/or Mark Soss.

Resident News From the CLL Traffic Safety & Road Use Work-Group By John Stevens
A True Confession from an Anonymous Resident (as told to a TSRU-WG member)
“I found myself running a little late the other day, trying to make ‘good time’ on my short drive to a Clubhouse Event. Probably from old habits, I felt a push to get around the slowpoke in front of me and was a bit annoyed that they were costing me more time. As I bit my lip in frustration, it hit me, “whose fault is it that I am running late?” In actuality, none of the pedestrians, bicyclists, or golf carts were at fault... they did not deserve any less consideration because I had gotten a late start. I grew up a little bit in that moment and realized that staying calm so that I could fully enjoy the ride through our serene and beautiful community while supporting neighborhood safety, is much more important than trying to ‘shave off’ 30-seconds here and there on my brief drive. If I am going to be annoyed at anyone, it should be me for not getting out of the house in a timely manner. One bad habit down, hopefully more to follow.”
The TSRU-WG plans to hold brain-storming meetings with residents to help identify ideas and options for addressing these concerns. Be on the lookout for more information about this. In addition, with help and support from the Cresswind Neighborhood Theater Group, the TSRU-WG will be producing several public service announcement videos promoting safe and responsible CLL road use. The videos will star our own CLL friends and neighbors in light-hearted vignettes that promote safe road use by all CLL user-groups (e.g., vehicles, golf carts, cyclists, walkers, etc.) …and who wouldn’t want that? Watch the Daily Update for more information.
Perhaps a wise message to us all… The CLL Traffic Safety & Road Use Work-Group (TSRU-WG) is continuing its effort to bring residents into a conversation about how to further encourage safe and responsible road use while we are out and about in our community. Several key traffic safety concerns have been identified by residents, some of which were borne out of their own ‘not-so-pleasant’ experiences on our roads. These traffic safety concerns currently include: a) unmarked cross-walks; b) lane drift on curves; c) wrong way in the round-a-bouts; d) speeding; e) obstructed/limited lines-of-sight. Page 10

If your project grows, the Landscape Committee is responsible for the approval. For all other items, the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) is responsible for the approval. Are you planning some summer projects?
Can I improve the Community Common Property around my home?
p Window Replacement p Roof Replacement p Landscape Edging p Exterior House Painting p Exterior Light Replacement p Driveway/Walkway Resurfacing p Standby Generators p Tankless Hot Water Heater p Installing Storm Door Help, I do not have my home plat? The ARC Committee has added the phase plats to the Cresswind Website for your convenience. Log into the Cresswind Website and select Lifestyle / Committees / ARC Committee / Street Plats; next select the Phase your home is in. The plat contains much needed information on your home, i.e., drainage and utility easements, Cresswind Common Property line, etc. Please note that some restrictions apply to what can be built and planted on easement property. If you have any questions about your project, please contact the ARC for assistance.
Cresswind Rules & Regulations Manual 5-3.1. General: (h) Under certain circumstances, improvements may be made to Community Common Property with approval of the Architectural Review Committee and/or the Landscape Committee and the Association Board of Directors. It is the intent of the Association to allow residents to landscape and hardscape (excluding fences) berms and slopes which are adjacent to certain lots in the Community. Before any improvements can be made, homeowners must submit requests to the Architectural Review Committee and/or the Landscape Committee for review and approval, and then final approval by the Board of Directors. Do I need to ask for approval if I am painting my house exactly the same colors? Yes, you do. The Cresswind Community Manager uses your request for approval as a means of tracking when you last painted your house, so it is important for you to submit this request. You will receive an approval letter from the Cresswind Community Manager, but you do not need to wait to receive the approval letter before you begin. Driveway Resurfacing Two important points to remember: all work must be approved by the ARC before and after the resurfacing process, and sidewalks are common property and cannot be resurfaced or colored.
My project will require the use of a dumpster or PODS, what do I need to know? Dumpsters and PODS must be approved by the ARC and requires a $1,500 damage deposit (ARC-2). The homeowner is responsible for any damage caused by the delivery and pick up of the dumpster. The deposit

John Saccomanno and John Peterson have stepped up to participate in the good work that is being done to support our community in alignment with the Rules & Regulations. Please join me in congratulating both Mr. Saccomanno and Mr. Peterson and thank them when you see them for volunteering! As previously reported, we have been collaborating with committees and clubs that wish to update the rules that apply to their group. This project should be complete about the time this Waterfall is delivered. Look for an announcement in the Daily Update for when the revision is implemented and available. As always, if we can answer any questions about Rules & Regulations, please feel free to contact a committee member. Our member’s roster and mission statement can be found on the Cresswind website. Go to the “INFO” tab, then “COMMITTEES”, select “Covenants and Rules and Regulations Committee.”

HEALTH & FITNESS COMMITTEE
Summer 2021 has arrived! It is a time we have all been anticipating. Life at Cresswind including our fitness program has come alive again. With summertime comes the opportunity for residents and guests to utilize our pool and spa facilities. We have revamped the rules for both the indoor pool and spa as well as the outdoor pool area. They are concise and we request all residents be familiar with them and abide by them for the safety of the community. We would like to welcome our new personal fitness trainer Kim McKenna. She has ACE certifications in both personal training and nutrition. Her belief is that the proper exercise and nutrition go hand in hand to accomplish a healthy lifestyle and attain your goals. Her programs are personalized based on an individual’s health concerns and limitations. July/August 2021

Sign up is limited to 100 people. In September, our seminar will be on Arthritis with a speaker from Northside Hospital. Further information regarding this event will be forthcoming. We look forward to seeing everyone participating in what this Active Adult Community has to offer!

We hosted a Public Safety Appreciation event, with over 50 police, sheriffs, and firemen attending. Additionally, some of our local city officials joined us. Firemen won the corn hole tournament…and they say they will continue to win it every year! Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this event a success. Photos of this event courtesy of Howie Mueller.
The Cresswind Education Committee hopes you have been able to participate in the programs we have recently offered. In conjunction with the Community Emergency & Disaster Response Planning team, we hosted a presentation by Casey Ramsey, our Hall County Emergency Management Director. Casey talked about what we can do to be prepared in case of a tornado hitting our community. Sixty residents signed up to experience the Police Simulator. Take a look at photos of our residents while there. We all got a better understanding of the split-second decisions the police officers make.
Topics for the next couple of months include Estate planning, Nutrition for Seniors, Dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease, Navigating the Cresswind Website, and Emergency Preparedness. Watch for announcements in the Daily Update! Programs are open to the entire Cresswind Community.

Committee Corner
Landscape Committee
by Linda Furgerson
Summer is almost here, and that means everyone is out enjoying the beauty of North Georgia. It also means many of you are submitting Landscape Requests to modify or improve your own personal landscape. A few minor behind the scenes changes have been implemented to improve and optimize the Landscape Request process and response time. Below is a collection of various topics relevant to your current and future landscaping projects. Just as a reminder, when you receive approval from the Landscape Committee, unless otherwise noted on your approval letter, you are being approved to plant the materials you have requested in the locations you have identified. If there is a change in either plant materials, or location, you must resubmit an updated Landscape Request stating the changes. Unfortunately, we had some instances where planting materials have been changed and unapproved plantings have been installed or placed in different locations. This could result in homeowners being required to remove the plants at their expense. Please, if for some reason there are changes to the planting materials due to availability or other reason, submit a secondary Landscape Request to get them approved. While an annual application of pine straw is provided to homeowners, some have opted to remove the pine straw and replace it with bark or mulch at their own expense. The only approved mulch or bark are Pine or Cypress and must be natural in color. Once bark or mulch has been installed, MTS will not install pine straw in those areas going forward. Homeowners are responsible for maintaining and replenishing the bark and mulch as needed at their own expense. Installation of bark and mulch does not require a Landscape Request to be submitted. Under no circumstances is plastic or colored mulch or bark allowed. A few years back, a level of service program was implemented at the suggestion of several homeowners who wanted to do “self-gardening.” This level of service program allows homeowners to designate the level of service they want from MTS regarding their front, side, and back flower beds in regards to weeding, trimming, and other services. Here is a quick review of those service levels.
o Green-Level - MTS is responsible for pruning, and weeding all flower beds: front, side, and back o Yellow-Level - MTS is responsible for pruning, and weeding only the front flower beds. Homeowner is responsible for side and back beds. o Red-Level - Homeowner is responsible for pruning all flower beds: front, side, and back. MTS will weed front beds only. Homeowner is responsible for weeding side and back beds. Homeowners can select the level of desired service regarding bed maintenance in January. Once selected, the level of service cannot be changed for one calendar year. You will be provided the appropriate colored decal to indicate your selected level of service. This decal must be displayed either on the mailbox, or outside controller for the sprinkler system (for homes without a mailbox). Despite the identified level of service, homeowners are responsible for any additional treatments as required for the health specific to, or recommend for, their plants. This could include: special flower/ shrub fertilizer, fungicides or pesticides. Homeowners are responsible for replacement of dead or diseased plants in all beds located on their property at their expense. If plants are replaced with identical or similar materials, no Landscape Request is required.

Committee Corner Welcome Committee News
by Sue Joninas
The Cresswind Welcome Committee is still reaching out to new residents with all being resales. Our members are sending cards, calling, and offering their support. We let the residents know they can call us and we will help them in any way we can. We also find that neighbors on their street are reaching out to make them feel welcome. We held a New Resident Orientation on April 29th at 4:00 pm. There were speakers on all aspects of living at Cresswind. It was well attended and the attendees enjoyed it immensely. We will be having another one in late November for new residents since April. If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee Member within four to six weeks of closing, please contact me at sjoninas@gmail.com. We do not want to miss any new residents. Welcome to Cresswind!
The Social Committee
By Pam Scheuerman
The Social Committee is excited to be back presenting special events at the clubhouse and lawn. As we all know last year was a very unusual situation. We are thrilled to be bringing to Cresswind new performers as well as some old friends/performers. Working with Maggie Shay, our new Lifestyle Director, we have already hosted Pete and Pete on the lawn, staged several Trivia nights, and had a blast at the opening of the pool. In late May, we had an outstanding time on the lawn with The Regulators, a classic rock band that had our Cresswinders up and dancing from the very first song. Then, on June’s First Friday, we hosted our first Ballroom event with our Cresswind resident band “Joyride”. It is starting to feel normal in Cresswind! The Social Committee is composed of 15 members representing 9 members that have served for several years and 6 new members that are quickly learning how to stage events. It is our pleasure to work with Maggie to host our events. These events require lots of hard work and planning. We are delighted to be a part of these fun Cresswind activities. Our Social Committee members are: Abby Saccomanno, Bev Peters, Pam Mauldin, Russ Schussler, Pam Scheuerman, Heidi Anderson, Carol Malarney, Pat Cohen, Marilyn Young, Gail Andrews, Diane Cope, Mark Nestle, Nancy Kubiak, Deena Demchak, Arlene Stevens and Mary McPherson

Ballroom Dance Club
The Ballroom Dance Club held their very first night of lessons on May 20th with both the beginner and more advanced groups well attended. Wayne Zwick has demonstrated why it pays to have an experienced instructor and he provided great advice while sprinkling it with a touch of humor. Comments received from a couple of our male dancers at both levels were as follows:
“I had a breakthrough understanding of how my feet initiate movement similar to when I played hockey.” “Loved it. I have never had a male instructor so it was awesome to get tips from the male point of view in terms of leading, without forcing. Excited for the next session.”
By Wendy O’Hanlon
Private lessons are also available and on Thursdays, Wayne provides group lessons at a rate of $70. The lesson can be shared among 2 couples or 2 singles or 1 single and 1 couple and BASED ON ROOM AVAILABILITY. Laurie Schussler will submit a room request, so please try to allow for 5 days’ notice. We enjoy being able to socialize as well as dance on a spacious dance floor. If you are interested, please contact Laurie Schussler at schusslers@gmail.com or Wendy O’Hanlon at golfgirl2011@att.net.
Our club will currently meet the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month for lessons in the Lanier Room. The beginner group is currently 6-7pm followed by a half hour practice session and the more advanced group begins their one-hour lesson at 7:30pm. Payment is made directly to Wayne at a cost of $10 per person for an 8-lesson package. There is a grace period of a couple weeks for a 10-week time frame to allow for vacations, etc. Eight (8) weeks for a single is $80 and $160 for a couple. If anyone chooses to attend all 10 lessons in that allotted time, they will need to pay an additional fee of $10 pp per class. Our current lesson package started May 20th and will conclude September 30th. (Slight adjustments in the schedule are at the discretion of the instructor and the club board). Wayne began teaching swing and Rhumba, but the group is welcome to have input on their choice of Ballroom instruction. The 2nd Thursday of the month is FREE with video followed by 1 hour practice for all levels of dancers.
Bocce Ball
By Steve Remsen
We have been playing bocce ball almost every Tuesday evening and it has been nice to see some new residents that have not played before. It does not take much time to show you how to play. The best news is that we have some new score boards. They were made by a Cresswind resident and what a great job he did! Take a walk when you have time and view the new score boards behind the Clubhouse. Page 32

Bible Brain Twister
By John Kezer
I once made a remark about the hidden books of the Bible. It was a lulu, kept people looking so hard for facts, and other it was a revelation. Some were in a jam, especially since the names of the books are not capitalized, but the truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. To others, it was a real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you. Yes, there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others may require judges to help them. I will be quickly admit it usually take a minister to find one of the 17, and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. A little lady say she brews a cup of tea so she can concentrate better. She how well you can compete. Relax now, for there really are the names of 17 books of the Bible in these sentences. (One preacher found 16 books in 20 minutes. It took him three weeks to find the seventeenth one.) Interested in growing in God’s Word? Cresswind Bowling League
By Jim Cook
The 2020/2021 Cresswind Bowling League ended their season on April 14, 2021. A three-game roll-off was held for the two teams that finished atop the standings for the first half of the season and for the second half of the season. The winner of the roll-off and champion for the season was the ‘Lucky Strikers’ consisting of John Devillez, Amy Devillez, Bob Ruhala, and Bill Hayden. Finishing second were the ‘Pinheads’ consisting of John Shambach, Charlene Shambach, Andy Hampton, and Greg Pike. Congratulations to the winners and all of the twelve teams who competed in what was a challenging year. The Cresswind Bowling League began a 10 week Summer bowling season on May 12, 2021 at the Station 300 Lanes right here in Gainesville. There are 14 teams competing the Summer League. If things go well for the Summer League then there is a good chance that the Cresswind Bowling League will move back to Station 300 next Fall. Look for announcements about signing up to bowl in the Fall of 2021. We plan to begin the sign ups for the Fall in June to be able come up with a head count for the 2021/2022 season which would begin the Wednesday after Labor Day. CIC Investment Club By Cathy Hoskinson
Members of the CIC Investment Club returned to the Clubhouse Kitchen in June for their monthly meeting after months of staying connected from their homes through Zoom. Leo Cortjens, President, talked about cycles and trends in the current market. Debbie Coursey-Prah, Treasurer, reviewed charting basics and illustrated the group’s current pattern of holdings. Discussion about growth versus value stocks followed.
By Chuck Bridwell
After the cancellation of the 2020 Spring Music Spectacular due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the inability to have a 2021 Spring Music Spectacular due to the unavailability of the ballroom, the Cresswind Community Chorus is excited to announce its first ever Summer Music Spectacular, July 8th through July 11th.
Regularly scheduled agenda items include research on a particular market segment. The Mid Cap Team presented their featured findings in June with the Small Cap Team coming up in July. “Stock advocates” present updated findings on their assigned stock with recommendations to buy, sell, or hold. After general discussion, the club members vote on investment opportunities with available funds.
The song list is amazing! Stand By Me, Lean on Me, Disney Silly Songs, Blue Skies, I Say a Little Prayer, Fly Me to the Moon, Hernando’s Hideaway, Y’all Come, Thanks You Soldiers, You Raise Me Up, and several more.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, July 12th at 1pm to allow July 4th holiday time for family and vacation travels. The August meeting will return to the first Monday on August 2nd at 1 pm.
In addition to the Chorus, there will be features including a Ukulele Band, Flute Duet, Ron Chiles on the piano, and the ever-popular UpChucks singing Purple People Eater.
Visitors are welcome to join us. Please contact Leo Cortjens, President, at leo.cortjens@gmail.com or Len Greco, Vice President, at lengreco1104@aol.com if you would like to attend. Watch for announcements regarding an upcoming Fall program with guest speakers for the entire Cresswind Community.

Fun Genealogy Facts By Dave Dittmeier
The oldest traceable family tree and also the longest family tree in the world is that of the Chinese philosopher and educator Confucius (551–479 BC), who is descended from King Tang (1675–1646 BC). The tree spans more than 80 generations from him and includes more than 2 million members. Surnames—i.e., last names—did not come into use until around the 11th Century in Europe. The Donnellys, the world’s oldest family, have more than 1,000 years of life among them. The 13-sibling farming family from rural County Armagh, Ireland, recently received a Guinness World Record for being the oldest living siblings. (2017) Most people will be able to trace some lines of their family tree back to the 1600s. Some people might Page 34
be able to trace a few lines of their tree back a little further than that, especially if they have a very notable person in their family tree that has had a lot of independent research done about them. Two people have a genetic relationship if one is the ancestor of the other, or if they share a common ancestor. Each of someone’s ancestors will have contributed to their DNA. In evolution, species that have evolved from the same ancestor are said to be of common descent. Want to learn more about your ancestors? Community Travel Club
The Community Travel Club (CTC) has a full schedule of trips to look forward to the second half of 2021. Our Providence Canyon/Sam’s Shortline Railroad excursion in May was so successful that we plan a second outing November 5/6th to the “Little Grand Canyon” of the southeast, plus a night experiencing the southern charm of the historic Windsor hotel in Americus, a visit to the Little White House in Warm Springs, and a full day scenic train ride with stops in Plains and Cordele, Georgia. On June 17th and 24th, we headed to South Carolina’s BMW Plant for a tour of their technologically advanced assembly plant and museum. Afterward, we traveled to picturesque Greenville, just minutes away, and enjoyed one of Southern Living’s top picks for favorite small towns for lunch and touring. Now is your chance to see professional soccer at its highest world class level. On Saturday July 24th, Cresswinders will be able to cheer on our own Atlanta United. The day also includes the Coca Cola

tailgate package with complimentary food and beverages in the Home Depot Backyard setting before the game. What a treat to see professional soccer at Mercedes Benz Stadium, a must-see venue in downtown Atlanta! The Community Travel Club is also hosting a day at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino, Thursday, August 19th, located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of NC. Plus, on Wednesday September 8th, we will be departing for Truist Park for our annual Atlanta Braves game. This year our Eastern Division Champs will be taking on the Washington Nationals. To find out more information and to sign up for any of these trips, please go to the Community Travel Club website on the Cresswind website and press on the specific trip link of your choice for additional information. To participate in any CTC trip, you must be a CTC member, which is easily done by writing a check to CTC for $5.00 per person. Please mark your calendar for the first Thursday of each month at 4:00 for our General Meetings. Hope to see you there!

But what a beautiful spring we had! The cool days and nights that lingered into the month prompted spectacular blooms in the garden. Peonies, daylilies, hydrangeas, etc. were all as bountiful as I have seen them in recent years. This beauty led us into a day of hosting a wonderful garden tour. Twelve of Cresswind’s finest gardens were on display for all their neighbors to visit. It was very successful and we appreciate all the time and work the host garden owners and volunteers put in to make this tour very special. The boxholders are starting to be rewarded with fresh vegetables and some stunning flowers. The tall orange and yellow lilies are real eye catchers!

And finally, watch for news about an exciting event that will be coming soon to the garden- always something fun happening there!

Make & Take
By Kathie Zeranski
It is so nice to finally be getting together in the Arts & Crafts Room. We had a Hat Making Workshop the last week of April to get ready for the Kentucky Derby Party. It was so much fun to see all the different colors and flowers and how the hats came together. Then we got to see how each of our hats went with the outfits at the party. Everyone did a great job! In May, there was an introduction to Zentangle Inspired Art. If you have not tried this fun and relaxing art, consider coming to the next workshop. I will be planning one in July with a fun project. A Beginning Calligraphy Class was started in June with the group learning the Italic Alphabet. I am hoping that other people will start to offer classes now that we are returning to “normal.”

Cresswind Ping Pong Club
In May, the Living Stylishly with Neighbors Club enjoyed a scenic drive to Frogtown Winery in Dahlonega. Here we enjoyed a delightful lunch, wine, and socializing with old and new friends.

On June 24th, we hosted Carol Cain, a fascinating speaker who portrayed Rosie the Riveter. Our members were entertained with a patriotic and informative presentation. If you missed these events, we are making plans for more activities that we hope you can attend. Our next trip will be in July to the Americas Mart in Atlanta.
The Cresswind Ping Pong Club continues Open play on Tuesday from 3 to 6 pm and Thursday from 3-5:30 pm in the Lanier Room. We also have a time slot on Mondays from 7 to 8 pm for people who still work. Everyone is invited to come try your hand at Ping Pong. There are no fees required to become a member of the Ping Pong Club. Tables are stored in the Lanier Room and paddles and balls are kept in the back closet in a storage bin. Now that the clubhouse is back in full swing, look for announcements about upcoming events such as instructional clinics and drop in tournaments. Contact Jim Cook or Kim Miller about information or questions about the Ping Pong Club.

Cresswind Model Railroad Club
By Jake Master
The turntable is on Bill Edmondson’s (president of the Model Railroad Club) HO scale model railroad. Turntables were used to turn steam locomotives around to change their direction. Turntables were also used to align a locomotive to a track leading to a stall in a round house where maintenance could be performed. The Model Railroad Club is back and will set up club modules in the Cresswind clubhouse soon. More information will be provided in the Daily Updates. If interested in model railroading or the club’s modular railroad layout, contact Jake Master at jwmsails@gmail.com.
Pickleball Club
By Sandra Burke
“Scramble” Wendy (or is it Wendy Scrambled?) is at it again! Six meet-and-play groups participated the first week of June with great success. More scrambles will be scheduled throughout the summer. Open play hours have been adjusted now that it is turning hot. League play will resume this fall. Also, good news, the Douglas nets are now installed on courts 5A and 5B! The Cresswind Pickleball Wars have begun. Cresswind Twin Lakes is challenging our club to send over five doubles teams of 3.0 skill level for their inaugural competition. This is where our club pickleball skill sessions take on greater importance. Nobody wants to let their team down. More tournaments are coming this fall: Reed Financial, September 18th; Cresswind Corporate in October (which will be held at Cresswind at Twin Lakes); and possibly Northeast Georgia Medical in late fall. Finally, because of this burgeoning competition, we pickleball players need to honestly assess our abilities. The International Federation of Pickleball (IFP) skill rating definitions are succinctly explained at www.ifpickleball.org. These definitions detail what it means to be rated as a 1.0 to 5.5+ player. The complete list of skill definitions can be found in the menu under “Skills Definitions.” Also available on this site is the IFP Official 2021 Rule Book which you can download. These definitions help players determine their “true” pickleball skill levels. So, get your groups together, practice those skill tips, and let the games begin. We certainly do not want Cresswind Twin Lakes (with their 30 pickleball courts, one arena center court, and a single port-a-potty) showing us up. We are Cresswind LL Strong!

Social Singles
By Elaine Vetter
The Social Singles Club has been busy with lots of summer activities. We have enjoyed walks, wine tasting, boat rides, lunches at several area restaurants, kayaking, and our monthly mingle on the patio. We took a day trip in June to downtown Atlanta to the History Museum, Swan House, Cyclorama, and the Goizetta Gardens, and plans are being made for several more outings this summer and fall. We will have a chance to share ‘treasures’ at the White Elephant exchange in July and a Trivia night is planned for August. If you are single and would like more information or would like to join the fun, please access our link on the Cresswind website and share your contact information. We would love to have you join us. Veterans Club By J.A. Swartz The last quarter was a great time to be a part of the Cresswind Veterans Club. The final chapter of our very successful raffle of the Hilton Head house rental (graciously donated by Barb and John Kalina) was completed as Sue Fraser, her husband and their friends told me they just had a wonderful week at the Kalina home. Thanks again, Barb and John. In addition, we received some very generous donations to help our veterans in need. Thank you! It was wonderful that our veterans were able to celebrate Memorial Day and again remember our fallen comrades in arms who gave their all for this great country. We would also like to thank Doug Geganto and his group of volunteers who place the American Flags at each home and common area of Cresswind. They are to be commended for their dedication to Page 42
our Veterans and our great nation. Maybe the best of all was being able to get together after a year off for our quarterly meeting to catch up with each other and hear the latest from our friends at the Veterans Administration. Maria Lundquest, who is the Veterans Field Officer and Office Manager of the Oakwood VA facility, gave a very informative presentation. She also was able to help many attendees with their paperwork for the VA. Most importantly, this gave our club members the ability to apply for much needed disability compensation. Lastly, we still have two vacancies on our board. I can promise it is a very rewarding experience to help our Vets in need. Call me at 706-781-4075 if you are interested.

The RV Club Re-discovers the Natchez Trace
On April 10-23rd, a total of 14 RVs and members of the growing Cresswind RV Club, set out to do some historic exploration. The trip along the 440 mile, 11 day trek followed the Natchez Trace, stopping to set up camp along the way at four different campgrounds. From there, day trips included a variety of local choices in the historically areas. For some experienced RV mentors, this was business as usual. For others less experienced, it was a time of learning how to successfully plan and enjoy camping experiences Beginning outside of Memphis, TN, and concluding at the terminus of Natchez, MS, the intrepid explorers discovered astonishing sites dating back as far as 8,000 years. Short hikes allowed interested RV’ers to retrace the steps of soldiers, indigenous tribes, slave traders, slaves, and others who had landed on ships at Natchez and then headed North. Day trips allowed the viewing and exploring of former plantations, Indian mounds, remnants of the first hotels (called “stands”), family and slave cemeteries, and a wide variety of

habitats and biomes along the route, to name a few highlights. Evenings lent themselves to returning to the campground for fun and frivolity with fellow travelers in a rousing game of “cornhole style” baseball, some creative games with cards, and lots of fun conversation about the adventures of the day. Whether it was dining in downtown Tupelo, touring the birthplace of Elvis Presley, visiting the place where Meriwether Lewis died, going inside a tobacco farm drying barn, or learning about the Natchez Indians who lived in Mississippi for over 1,000 years, the entire trip was a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends and learn more about the origins of the South. The RV Club welcomes new members and ideas for future trips. Come join the group for an experience you will not soon forget! Writers in the Wind Cresswind Creative Writing Group
We welcome our newest member, John Patrick. John brought some unique writing ideas to the group. The Cresswind Creative Writing group is open to anyone interested in enhancing their creative writing skills.
What’s Happening
By Laurie Homa
There are two more books coming this year from writers in the group. Covid certainly sparked our writer’s creative minds. They expanded our usual short stories, poetry, and memoirs as monthly assignments into something bigger. Congratulations to all. We will be updating our short story albums available in the Cresswind Library later in July. Enjoy reading some of our work while you are waiting for your next meeting to start. Our meetings are the last Thursday of the month. We meet in the Savannah Room from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. We look forward to meeting you.

Tennis Update
By Sandy Barmak
After a long hiatus, the Ladies USTA 3.0 65+ team was finally back in action. We thank Debbie Cortjens for being the team captain and Cindy Halperin for serving as co-captain. They are doing well, but it is too early to give their final standing. Both a Ladies USTA 3.0 65+ and 55+ team will be playing again in the fall. To stay up to date on tennis events check out our website, https://cresswindll.wixsite.com/cwtennis. You can also contact our president, Sandy Barmak at sandybarmak@gmail.com. The temperatures may be rising but that has not stopped the activity from heating up on the tennis courts. We offer open play on Monday (ladies), Wednesday (men) and Friday (mixed doubles) from 9 am – 11 am. We encourage you to come down and join the action. It is the perfect way to meet other tennis players in the Cresswind community. Club members have a roster to connect with other players to ask them to come down and play, but all Cresswind residents are invited to join in. At other times, many members make reservations for more competitive play with fellow club members. The weather cooperated for our April Round Robin social which was a huge success with almost 30 participants. It was great to see so many players come out to enjoy the tennis competition and have the chance to get to know each other better. We will all be in the Crow’s Nest on July 11th for Breakfast at Wimbledon to enjoy strawberries and cream and watch the Men’s Final.
The Cresswind Storytelling Club!
The Cresswind Storytellers share their wonderful stories in the Clubhouse Ballroom every month on the second Tuesday at 2:00pm. *** See below for a Short Story ***
Holding Up the Sky
Usually about 2/3 of the people who attend our monthly sessions are listeners. You do not have to tell a story but just come and listen. One month the guiding theme was “My Favorite Job” and another was “All That Glistens is Not Gold”. You see, you are thinking of a story already! For more information, contact Bert Emma at bemmajr@gmail.com There are no dues to be a member of the Storytelling Club and We would love to add you to the Storytelling Club distribution list. Please come to our next session where the storytellers and listeners have such a great time and they would love for you to be a part of it. Remember, everyone has a story to tell or listen to!
One day an Elephant saw a Hummingbird lying flat on its back on the ground. The bird’s tiny feet were raised up into the air. The Elephant laughed and said, “What on earth are you doing, Hummingbird?” The Hummingbird replied, “I heard that the sky might fall today. If that should happen, I am ready to do my part in holding it up.” The Elephant laughed harder and said, “Do you think those tiny feet could hold up the sky? You can’t hold up anything.” And the Hummingbird said, “Not alone, but each of us must do what he can. And this is what I can do.” – A Chinese Folktale
