by Krisjanis Mezulis
Aloja was drawn by Ieva Mezule and put together by Krisjanis Mezulis. Every single letter has been hand drawn with a thin brush on acrylic paper, making it visually unique. The playful font is easy to read and instantly infuses a light-hearted feel. It is thick enough to be used for printing special effects, watercolour gradient effects, or simply in plain monochrome. The possibilities are endless!

t’s no secret that we delight in artistic and out-of-the-box bridal ideas, so imagine our joy when photos of this styled shoot
arrived in our mailbox. A combination of art, contemporary décor and minimalist bridal fashion, this divine collaboration by likeminded vendors from Malaysia ticks all the boxes. Look at how the classic neutrals are reflected in the décor and gorgeously paired with the bridal outfits. And here’s the best part: all the vendors and outfits worn were sourced locally. Enjoy!

vibrant + nostalgia By celebrating their wedding over two days, these newlyweds managed to have a more intimate and meaningful experience with their loved ones. The first day was focused on tradition and nostalgia, so the colours were classic even though the reception was still bright and colourful as a throwback to big, hearty Chinese feasts. On the second day, they had a more contemporary celebration in a garden, featuring vibrant colours and a variety of details and textures. Again, the overarching theme was celebrating the couple and their union. Every detail, including even the florist who had become their close friends over the wedding planning process, had a strong connection to them!

CHURCH CEREMONY The church’s high ceilings and classic interiors meant that little needed to be done in terms of décor, and the couple added only simple decorations to complete the look. The groom looked dapper in his deep blue suit, while the bridal party was absolutely resplendent in white and cream. A year in the making, the wedding went without a hitch and was certainly a sweet way to honour tradition and celebrate this couple’s union.

LUNCH RECEPTION In line with the traditional setting of their church ceremony, Desiree and Daniel continued to honour their Chinese heritage and families with their lunch reception. “The nostalgic theme unfolded naturally as we allowed our decisions on food, décor and favours to be guided by our memories of growing up,” said Desiree. “We chose Empress because we were both raised in huge Chinese families that always gathered around delicious home-cooked feasts, and we wanted a venue that had really good Chinese cuisine. “We also loved the classy yet relaxed setting by the river with lots of natural light, not to mention the incredible hospitality we experienced from the Empress team. We loved it so much that it’s now become our go-to venue for family celebrations!”

CEREMONY Bright bursts of orange, red, peach and mustard, paired with the lush green of the gardens, kept things super vibrant and exciting for the newlyweds’ second day of wedding celebrations. This was where they decided to truly let their hair down and celebrate with their closest friends. “We were looking for a laidback, romantic venue with a natural vibe,” said Desiree. From the special vow ceremony led by the bride’s childhood friend (who had to stand on a stool because she was so short!) to the beautiful weaving by cord x clay that was incorporated into their floral arch, everything was exactly as the couple had hoped. It was so special as their flower vendor, Fleurapy, had also become their friends, and knew exactly what the couple needed to celebrate their special day.
DINNER RECEPTION The open-concept kitchen and restaurant fit the theme perfectly, with its warmly lit interiors and twinkling lights outdoors. The surroundings certainly provided a natural backdrop for the night – you wouldn’t have guessed that you were in the concrete jungle of Singapore. Closing out the couple’s wedding weekend bonanza was this special dinner with their closest friends, which they kept super intimate. And after the guests had toasted the happy couple, everyone put on their dancing shoes and partied the night away!

THEME AND DETAILS
1920s shanghai Featuring rich, deep hues against whitewashed walls, this 1920s Shanghai Jazz Age theme really came to life with the floral décor, cheongsam dresses for the bridal party, and pops of red with lace and pearl textures. The bride had scoured the Internet for vintage props such as fans, old radios and Chinese posters, and she also reused mooncake boxes from the Mid-Autumn Festival. The newlyweds wanted their nuptials to capture the glitz and glamour of a Shanghai jazz bar – and it did.

Grand Shanghai Restaurant, Singapore Truly, it was like taking a step back in time, to the days of velvet-draped walls and the glitz and glamour of the 1920s. What a wonderful way to embrace your roots while celebrating one of the happiest days of your life! Huiwen: “We wanted a space that was cosy yet elegant, so we ruled out hotel ballrooms and decided on the Grand Shanghai Restaurant. With its chandeliers, high ceilings and antique décor reminiscent of Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s, it was perfect for our old school wedding.”

RECEPTION The dramatic floral choices, from the lush maroons with a tinge of blue and gold to the addition of luxurious peonies, really added to the elegance of the tablescapes. Meanwhile, the pops of vibrant red in various hues and many decorative elements also contributed to the beauty of the setting. A jazz band performed Chinese oldies (but goodies), setting the mood for the celebration and giving the newlyweds and their loved ones a gorgeous night to remember!

AKAD NIKAH Traditionally held in mosques, akad nikah ceremonies are quietly joyous – intimate and cosy, warming the hearts of everyone in the room. For this, no detail was overlooked, and even the ceiling was decorated with flowers, punctuated by geometric lanterns and rustic colours. How amazing was it that the traditional batik shirts brought out the rustic glamour of the ceremony? All eyes were certainly on the bride and groom who looked every bit the part of king and queen for the day.

CEREMONY Moving from indoors out into the backyard, the traditional ceremonies continued. The fans and bridal party outfits were pretty and casual yet befitting the theme, while the foliage, feathers and dried flowers really helped to create a romantic look and feel. We cannot imagine a more intimate space for two people to exchange their wedding vows.
RECEPTION Seamlessly transitioning to a more modern celebration, the reception was, again, filled with minute details and floral elements that brought everything together nicely. The inclusion of fairy lights, sparklers and wedding games added a contemporary touch, as the bride and groom celebrated their union with loved ones by laughing and dancing the night away!

lush greens + pink Chia Ee: “Our wedding colours were white, gold and green, so baby’s breath, wheat and leaves were a must! We also got fairy lights and some candles to create a dreamy, starry ‘sky’.” This couple’s choice of venue was crucial. They wanted an indoor venue that could feel like it was outdoors, and Awesome Canteen at Sekeping Victoria, Penang, had exactly the right ambience. The tall trees surrounded by the unwashed concrete walls were perfect, and thanks to some gorgeous contrasting neutrals, everything turned out beautifully, especially with that giant pop of pink courtesy of their aisle-turned-backdrop.

CEREMONY Cosy and heartfelt, the gathering of the newlyweds’ nearest and dearest ensured that it was a ceremony befitting their love for each other. Everyone was touched by their exchange of vows, as well as the exchange of rings as a physical symbol of their promise to each other. More than just an aisle, the couple’s choice also connected to the backdrop, with a beautiful verse on love from the Bible printed on it. Surrounded by white, gold and green hues, the bright stripe was an uplifting and refreshing touch.
RECEPTION Finally, the fairy lights, candles, and textures such as wheat, wire cages, green leaves and foliage everywhere, certainly set the mood for the bride and groom to celebrate their union with their family and friends. There were slight hints of gold to add glitz to an otherwise relaxed affair, and the couple also played the trendy “shoe game, using leaves for the groom and flowers for the bride instead of shoes.

ooking like something out of a Wes Anderson movie, Jaipur is bursting with colours, flavours and culture. Also known as the Pink City, since much of the city is painted pink, there is
so much to love about this place, and we are glad that this couple, together with Jessielyee. Photography, were able to do it justice. Here, the photographer shares what went on behind the scenes. What made the couple decide to do their post-wedding photos at Jaipur? Chloe, who is from Malaysia, married Eshan, who is from India. They decided to visit a few different cities after their wedding and asked me to join them at Jaipur for a photoshoot. How did you plan their outfits? The outfits were planned to fit the different themes and colours for visual purposes. We went to a few famous spots including the iconic Hawa Mahal and Amber Fort, to name a few, and were able to explore many amazing architectural attractions.
