At The Heart Of Design: Dulux Trade Unveils Its Highly Anticipated Colour Of The Year And Trend Predictions For 2018 The UK’s leading paint brand Dulux Trade has unveiled its annual Colour of the Year: Heart Wood, a warm neutral, with a hint of heather. The colour has been revealed alongside key colour predictions for 2018 as part of the brand’s industry-acclaimed trend forecast, ColourFuturesTM, now in its 15th year. Every year, Dulux Trade’s parent company AkzoNobel brings together a panel of international experts from various disciplines of design to develop ColourFutures™, the brand’s industry-acclaimed trend analysis and forecast. The team scours the globe to discover emerging trends and insights and identifies how they impact the way we live. The findings result in the selection of the Colour of the Year and key colour palettes that subsequently present specifiers, from architects to interior designers, with a collection of aspirational colour schemes that can be applied to both residential and commercial projects. This year, acclaimed architect, interior designer and TV personality Oliver Heath was part of the panel, which is based at AkzoNobel’s Global Aesthetic Centre in the Netherlands. Oliver was key in ensuring that all the subtleties of the industry’s specification needs were threaded into the resulting palettes.

While over the last year, the defining shade, Denim Drift, has been the manufacturer’s third bestselling shade, it is hoped this success can be repeated with Heart Wood, Dulux Trade’s Colour of The Year for 2018.

TRENDS OVERVIEW THE COLOUR OF THE YEAR AT THE HEART OF DESIGN – THE HEARTWOOD SPACE

TRANSLATING THE MOOD OF THE MOMENT INTO TRENDS For 2018, that mood is felt to be one of unpredictability and uncertainty. A world in which we don’t know what the news will bring every day; a world with more expectations and more demands on our time; a world of division, and a world where we have greater access to information and choices than ever before. This year’s four key colour palettes include a variety of tones which each complement Heart Wood in different ways, with solutions for residential, leisure and hospitality, commercial spaces and health care facilities. The new Colour of the Year and its associated trends have been created to ensure daily environments can become places of calm; where the noise can be turned down and values can be nurtured. Colour is an essential tool in creating an environment that welcomes people in.

The Heart Wood trend is inspired by the beautifully warm wooden materials we see being used in all kinds of interior decorating and architecture. A variety of woods are growing in popularity, but we see a tendency towards warmer, light and dark shades of red, alongside violet and pinkish woods. The warmth of wood reflects the comfort that we need in these uncertain times – this material is an essential element for creating the welcoming environments we desire.

dulux trade

The Colour of the Year palette reflects the importance of cosy wooden tones and since blue remains so fundamental, the colour collection flows beautifully from this year into next. The nourishing warmth of wood and tactile comfort of leather add to this sense of harmony. There is no need for excess – the ‘Heart Wood’ space has everything needed to create real balance. The versatility of the palette gives specifiers the freedom to balance softer shades such as cocoa with the deeper, bolder tones of ink blue and purple. Combining these shades in such a way creates a calming backdrop, effectively transforming any space into an environment of comfort and restfulness. Due to its gentle and delicate character, the palette is perfectly suited to residential, hospitality and leisure projects. It channels the current commercial interest in the colour pink and presents it as an accessible set of nearly-neutrals. The Heart Wood palette works marvelously as a subtle background décor yet is full of character and plays well with popular modern design details such as walnut, brushed brass, marble and matt-black surfaces. THE COMFORTING SPACE:

the World Of Hospitality

The colours in this palette all have a muted quality, making them easy to combine into a colour scheme of your own or your customer’s choice. In the home it provides an instant impression of luxury as well as a neutral base for residents who want to personalise their surroundings. For office buildings, the warm nature of this palette creates a welcoming setting. As society’s boundaries between work and home gradually fade, it presents employees with a pleasant workspace, which plays an important part in job satisfaction and productivity.

to a space. Above all it’s about creating a place for drawing inspiration and creativity. Overall cheerful in tone, the palette is ideal for school buildings as well as the leisure industry. With the Playful Home palette, the mood-enhancing qualities of the palette lend themselves perfectly to the hospitality sector as well as education by creating a space that is invigorating and full of life. Clean and fresh hues combined with uplifting accent colours are essential in providing a stimulating atmosphere, while muted tones can ease tension and improve concentration.

THE INVITING SPACE: The Inviting Space colour collection has an easy-going style, bringing together neutrals, softer pastels framed by graphic borders of coal and dark blue. Encouraging a clear-headed approach to life, the palette supports a need for connection, making it well-suited to office spaces as well as healthcare environments. Proportions of coloured surfaces can be used to indicate the purpose of a room, or signal a transition to a different area. For instance, softer pastel shades may be framed by graphic borders to create an airy mood, yet enhance spatial awareness. Similarly, consecutive rooms painted in several shades of green impart a sense of logic. THE PLAYFUL SPACE:

This trend is about relaxed, grown-up luxury, with its heritage hints, warm-tone woods and use of natural materials. Creating rich, welcoming interiors with generously layered textures that offer a restorative embrace. Created with architects and interior designers in mind, this palette helps accentuate the best in the architectural details of a building. Such attention to detail greatly enhances the perceived value of a space.

11

The Playful Space palette draws the Colour of the Year, Heart Wood, into sunny and warm territory. Pops of fresh colour add a sense of fun and energy, including shades of green inspired by nature. As the name suggests, the Playful Home brings a sense of possibility

Reflecting on the ColourFuturesTM colours and trends for 2018, Rebecca Williamson, Senior Colour and Design Expert, added: “Dulux Trade’s Colour of the Year for 2018, Heart Wood, is incredibly versatile, and connects beautifully with the accompanying trend palettes for the year ahead. Providing the comfort and reassurance we’re all seeking, it’s the perfect antidote to the mood of the moment – channeling a real sense of calm and warmth during such times of uncertainty. We can’t wait to see spaces across the globe transformed into true sanctuaries.” Dulux Trade incorporates an extensive range of high profile sub-brands that are unparalleled in their decorative performance. These include Diamond, a hard-wearing innovative range of paints incorporating stain repellent technology, which is available in over 11,500 shades, and Weathershield, a specialist range that can help exterior masonry and timber withstand the elements. The Colour of the Year is just one of an extensive portfolio of tools and services available to help specifiers unlock the maximum potential from their spaces. Portview Score Again with Club Wembley Fit-Out Portview Fit-Out was appointed by Club Wembley to create Wembley Stadium’s new and exclusive members’ club, One Twenty. From the beginning, Portview engaged in extensive consultation with Club Wembley and KSS Design Group to take the traditional hospitality experience to a new level. The finished space is a bespoke club that has been tailored for select members to celebrate the best of ‘English’ in one of the most extraordinary stadiums in the world. One Twenty’s private entrance sees guests pass through a sculptural oversized angular canopy. This dedicated entry point has an air of mystique and a hint of subtle extravagance providing the perfect arrival space for members and their guests to enjoy. Ascending an illuminated staircase past a double storey smoked oak panelled wall, guests are greeted by a visually stimulating array of colours and features in the lounge. The unique spaces create intimate

areas and group networking opportunities, where guests can relax amongst contrasts of light and dark with a bold tapestry of furniture and a quirky use of materials. Lighting is used playfully, with lamps and hidden washes from the floor to accompany stylish glass raindrop pendants that juxtapose the dominant timber raft. The panelled feature wall is the stunning central backdrop to the lounge area and includes a recessed ‘snug’ banquette, deep pile upholstery with recessed bookshelves where guests can browse the famous Wembley archives. The lounge is designed to be ‘evolutionary’, with smaller furniture clusters and chairs that swivel for guests to define their audience, privacy and sculpt their own experience. Dense tones of mustard, purple and turquoise colours are used throughout the spaces in an experiment of the visual senses. The bar area is the stand out feature for its scale and presence, with a spectacular brass chandelier that

floats up to the exposed panelled petrol ceiling. The restaurant ceiling lattice breaks the traditional grid system, by re-defining a new patchwork pattern that adds originality to the environment. The movement and energy of the game is injected with line work that rushes across and often over sails the ceiling itself. In the restaurant space, small, intimate dining ‘rooms’ have been created through dividing screens and booths for different dining styles. The design integrates sensitively proportioned TV screens to create a personal feel and ambience. A refined and elegant colour palette uses smoked oak, pearlised metallic, marble, olive, taupe, purple and turquoise upholstery. Frosted windows within the signature bar visually connect the restaurant to the lounge. One Twenty oozes mystic and exclusivity, re-enforcing the privacy of the space, but playing with the sense of movement and energy of a football pitch.

Award-winning Design, Innovative Products + the Chance to Network with World-Leading Designers. With Love from Sleep Sleep, Europe’s hotel design and development event, returns to the Business Design Centre in London on 21-22 November, with an exhibition of over 150 national and international suppliers, a Conference featuring some of the foremost influencers shaping global hospitality, the Sleep Set design competition, and Spaces, which showcases products in specially designed hotel environments. In recent years, the event has sought to tap into emerging hospitality design themes, and this year the theme is “Loyalty: Lessons in Love”. In a unique collaboration with Ipsos Loyalty, the global leader in customer experience, satisfaction and loyalty research, Sleep will consider how design can create amazing experiences that connect with customers emotionally, create enduring memories - and convert guests into long term advocates. The Exhibition Among Sleep’s 2017 newcomers are Artemide, ercol, THG Paris, Ligne Roset and Sans Souci, and such is the status of the show that many companies, both loyal and new, choose Sleep as the launch pad for new collections. This year, for example, expect to find the first-ever carpet collection by Kelly Hoppen MBE, designed and manufactured in collaboration with Brintons, two spectacular technology-enabled glass lighting fixtures from Sans Souci and new indoor and

outdoor furniture from Serralunga, including the Cassero Collection designed by Patricia Urquiola.

will present their thoughts on the responsibilities of designers to create new meaning in hotel luxury.

Engaging Spaces

Taking Inspiration from the Sleep Set

Building on its success in 2016, Spaces will encompass an imaginative collection of 19 immersive showcases created by leading suppliers, including CaberlonCaroppi, YPRT and Elegant Clutter. Each one promises to offer design inspiration for every indoor and outdoor space, by allowing visitors to experience products in specially created hotel settings.

Structured as a competition, the Sleep Set translates the year’s theme into physical form with leading design companies creating concept installations that range from the deeply allusive and deconstructed to immaculately detailed and essentially hotel-ready rooms. This year the global reach and crossdisciplinary portfolios of the four participants is assured to bring a wide spectrum of cultural, geographic and industry perspectives to the mix. They are London-based MKV Design, Stonehill & Taylor from New York, Italian company, Il Prisma, and 1508 London, and the winner will be announced at lunchtime on Day Two. Sleep’s cross-cultural approach is also reflected in this year’s Sleeper Bar, which is being created by Moscow-based Design & Architecture Studio, Sundukovy Sisters.

Sleep Conference Sleep’s free-to-attend conference offers a combination of panel discussions exploring emerging topics in the hotel design sector and roundtable discussions with some of the industry’s most acclaimed designers. Celebrated Parisian interior architect Tristan Auer will open the Conference, and Eero Koivisto, from Swedish architecture and interior design partnership, Claesson Koivisto Rune, will be the lead speaker on day two. Other sessions will include “The Post Cool Hotel”, with Henrietta Thompson, editor-at-large of Wallpaper*, Jason Holley, director of Universal Design Studio, and James Soane director of Project Orange, and “New Concepts of Luxury”, where the principals of Singapore-based WOW Architects | Warner Wong Design, Maria Warner Wong and Chiu Man Wong, Website: www.thesleepevent.com

KNAUF AMF

the World Of Hospitality

Knauf AMF add shine and colour to create a stylish resort Amarin is a stylish hotel in the popular coastal resort of Rovinj in Croatia. Part of leading hospitality company, Maistra AG, this contemporary new resort combines style and luxury throughout its recreation and relaxation spaces. Acoustic ceiling systems from Knauf AMF were chosen to provide the necessary sound absorption required to ensure the hotel’s active and quieter zones work in harmony. Guests are welcomed in the hotel’s spacious and elegant reception area. For the ceiling design, 700m2 AMF Mondena System A metal ceilings were installed to enhance the chic, polished interior and add a visual contrast to the smooth white surfaces around the hotel entrance. The ceiling was fitted using a concealed grid system. The 412 x 1215mm planks sit together to form an almost seamless, mirror-finished surface. AMF Mondena metal ceilings are ideal for this opulent reception area because they offer excellent sound absorption, improving speech intelligibility. The sound absorption of AMF Mondena ceilings also help create a relaxing ambiance in the hotel bar and

lounge. The polished surfaces of the metal ceiling and wall around the bar reflect each other creating the impression that they flow into one another. The architect created visual contrasts in his interior design to help define the active from the quiet areas. The recreation spaces are brightly coloured which accentuate the external landscape. The investment of Setin Incorporadora was more than R$ 1.8 million in this new venture. “AccorHotels has been betting on the expansion of the Adagio Aparthotel network here in Brazil. The expectation is that the number of apartments available to the brand in the country will grow more and more until 2020”, says Olivier Hick, EVP Operations Midscale AccorHotels South America. The location is an important differential of the new Adagio Aparthotel São Paulo Barra Funda: it is 700 meters from the Espaço das Américas, famous São Paulo venue for large events, 1 km from Água Branca

In addition, the apart hotel is located in the same neighborhood of one of the main bus station of the city and is surrounded by organizational complexes in commercial area. “The Adagio Aparthotel is mainly sought after by two public profiles: those traveling for business or family. Beauty And Strength – Sottini’s New Ellero Vessel Range Combines Ultra-Thin, High End Design Aesthetics With Extreme Durability Thin Ceramics is an exceptional new range of vessels from bathroom ceramics specialist Sottini. The highend, ultra-thin design of this choice product range was made possible through the creation of an extremely durable ceramic material, Diamatec. Drawing on their two hundred years of ceramic expertise, combined with an unsurpassed quality in craftsmanship, designers at Sottini investigated best practices across the industry. The result of their research and development was a new material, Diamatec, whose exceptional robustness allows designers to achieve the near impossible: Extremely thin, straight edges that are extremely robust and durable—a highly challenging and complex combination.

specially refined materials. Thorough research and development was conducted to reach the ideal combination of finely ground alumina— a versatile ceramic material known for its strength— pre-fired clays, and the perfect blend of sodium and potassium. The result: Unprecedented strength and durability, even in the most thin and precise designs. A new glazing system was developed to complement this innovation, ensuring its tight radius was maintained. Diamatec was born.

The Ellero range of vessels is supplied in three configurations: a vessel without overflow, which maximises internal volume; and for hotel applications both a vessel with overflow, and a deck and vessel with overflow.

Products in the Ellero range are especially well suited for demanding environments, such as hotels, where an effective combination of aesthetics and durability is of paramount importance. The design maximises available vessel space resulting in an enhanced user experience.

Previewed at ISH 2017, these stylish vessels will be available in white and five pastel colour tones, inspired by ‘the perfect storm’, a meteorological phenomenon in which warm and cold fronts merge to create beautiful colour tones in greys, blues and dusty pinks.

The overflow in these vessels has been thoughtfully integrated into the design. The result is a discreet, slotted design that does not compromise the clean lines and minimalism of the piece.

The Ellero vessel range will launch summer 2017.

Diamatec was developed using a unique blend of Website: www.sottini.co.uk

Butcombe Brewery reopens The Methuen Arms in Corsham with a stunning new look With its classic Georgian architecture, standout food and cosy rooms, The Methuen Arms is an awardwinning pub, restaurant and 14-room hotel that sits next to the stately home and grounds of Corsham Court in Wiltshire. After buying the venue in November 2016, Butcombe Brewery – which is part of Pubs and Inns business, the Liberation Group – embarked on an ambitious renovation programme, working alongside the design and build specialists Concorde BGW. Six weeks on and its ready to unveil the venue’s stunning new look. The Methuen Arms has had a beautiful facelift to

make it more welcoming to locals and visitors alike. Gone are the red rooms and in their place is an altogether lighter colour scheme, along with new, soft upholstery and furnishings to create a cosy feel. Under the instructions of MD, Jayson Perfect, the team has created a new lounge space for hotel guests to spend time in, a picturesque new garden area and introduced a Green Room with bespoke seating and botanical artwork. Locals who aren’t staying overnight can while away the hours in the newly revamped bar. The Methuen Arms restaurant is now a place where people want to linger iand enjoy views over the

new garden and “scullery” room, perfect for private dinners. The exposed stone walls and beams create a rustic, laid back vibe. Butcombe Brewery was keen to pay respect to the Methuen Arms’ history and previous life as a coaching inn with stabling for 40 horses. The building’s exposed stone walls and age-old timber beams can be found across the site and form the basis for the country aesthetic that’s been maintained throughout. During the decorating process, Concorde BGW uncovered some hidden parquet timber flooring, which it has now restored.

Taking care of food and drink at The Methuen Arms is award-winning Head Chef Leigh Evans, formerly of Combe Grove Manor, The Chequers and The Royal Crescent Hotel in Bath. Evans sources the finest local ingredients, makes everything on site from scratch where possible, minimises waste and adopts a nose to tail philosophy when it comes to crafting his menus, whether it’s for a simple pub snack or a more indulgent evening meal. Standout dishes include seared scallops with crispy ham hock, black treacle, lime, cauliflower, Granny Smith apple and spices (£12) for starters or mains like lamb short rib and seared rump with raw radicchio, peas, broad bean, mint and pomme anna (£22). In the pub area, diners can tuck into classics like

Butcombe battered haddock with hand cut chips (£13.50), truffled macaroni cheese (£11) and a selection of 28-day dry aged steaks cooked in the Big Green Egg ceramic BBQ. The stunning new gardens make the perfect setting for a mid-summer evening spent sharing a 24oz rump cap steak (£47) with Peppercorn sauce and a bottle of delicious red wine from the cellar. With Leigh in the kitchen and Ashley and Abigail, the general managers, running the front of house, The Methuen Arms is better than ever and stands firmly as Butcombe Brewery’s flagship inn and the hub of the community. The hard work doesn’t stop there. The Methuen Arms has recently acquired planning permission to restore the stables into 5 new hotel bedrooms and the old barn

for private hire. Speaking about the renovations, Jayson Perfect, Managing Director of Pubs & Inns at Liberation Group , said: “The Methuen Arms was a fascinating project because the space was steeped in history and had so much potential, but it needed to be unlocked. The more we looked the more gems we found, like the hidden parquet timber flooring. It was also important from the start that we created a destination that could act as a home away from home for both guests and locals – the pub is the cornerstone of any village, after all. The final result is absolutely stunning and altogether more welcoming for everyone.”

Bright Goods LED filament lamps illuminate Germany’s first Premier Inn Stylish, energy efficient LED lighting creates a traditional, yet modern ambience Designer brand Bright Goods announces its installation of LED filament lamps into Premier Inn’s new build hotel in Frankfurt, creating vibrant illumination that complements the striking interior, designed with a distinct British theme. Whitbread’s 210 bedroom Premier Inn, the first of a national expansion programme in Germany and which opened last year, is located next to the Messe Exhibition Ground in Frankfurt. Its position, next to two other hotels, meant the design had to stand out from the crowd, and the decorative lighting therefore, visible from the outside, needed to be impressive to entice and welcome guests. JSJ Design, who has worked with Premier Inn on many of their UK hotel interiors, collaborated with

Hamburg based designers, JOI Design to create an interior for a contemporary hotel with an individual design, tailored for the German market. The multipurpose, ground floor communal area was designed to create a welcoming space with specific zones, separated by open shelves and decorated in bold colours, where guests can relax, dine or work in a peaceful atmosphere. The lighting was instrumental in creating a unique ambience in each area; bright in the work space to warm and inviting in the lounge and dining areas. JSJ Design specified Bright Goods LED filament lamps including, Rose, Albert, Joseph and Josephine which were installed throughout the open plan public areas on the ground floor including the reception and lobby

areas and used in the decorative hanging pendant light fittings above the bar area and dining areas, and in the wall lights and floor standing lamps. Jeremy Scarlett, co-founder of JSJ Designs said, “The open plan layout is designed to be multi-functional, adapting to guests changing needs throughout the day. Lighting plays a huge role in achieving this and the dimming element of the Bright Goods LED bulbs was crucial.” He continued, “The LED filament bulbs are almost as much of a design feature as the fittings themselves. They work very well as part of the overall design scheme and I’d definitely use Bright Goods LED lamps again on future projects.”

The Highland Center The Highland Center is a privately owned hotel and restaurants with a team of experienced and enthusiastic staff who are dedicated to ensuring guests’ comfort and pleasurable stay whilst in the Highlands of Iceland. The Highland Center aims at offering you a “complete Highland experience from the moment you arrive in Iceland’s interior. Our staff are knowledgeable, helpful and multilingual and are always ready to assist guests during their stay. We aim to provide the best accommodation, excellent food and exciting activities at The Highland Center Hrauneyjar. Northern Lights The northern lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, have become the most popular attraction for our guests. The Highland Center is superbly located for viewing the northern lights and is therefore a key destination for travellers exploring Iceland. As The Highland Center is located in an unspoilt rural area, light pollution is not an issue during the winter months. Here you can immerse yourself in the countryside and enjoy perfect conditions for viewing the sky at night. Although there is never any guarantee of seeing the Aurora Borealis, if you stay at

The Highland Center for a few nights, you have a fairly good chance to experience this magical phenomenon. Northern Lights Spotting Guide There are no accurate long-term forecasts for the Aurora Borealis (to our knowledge), and no research has been published on how the northern lights behave, or when they are likely to appear. However, slightly after the autumn equinox and slightly before the spring equinox, there are statistically somewhat better viewing conditions and more consistent northern lights. Mainly, three variables affect the chances of seeing the northern lights in Iceland: solar winds, local weather and the moon. The moon inhibits viewing of weaker Auroras. We have, however, seen some stunning northern lights under a full moon—especially during a very active solar wind. The main factor affecting the appearance of the Aurora is sun/sunspots/coronal mass ejections (CME) activity and local weather (i.e., clouds), which entirely determines visibility of northern lights. As a focal point for all kinds of activities and excursions, The Highland Center Hrauneyjar is close to many of the most beautiful locations in the Highlands, including Landmannalaugar, Þjórsårdalur, Mount Hekla, Sprengisandur, VeidivÜtn and Fjallabak.

Popular excursions from the Highland Center include Superjeep safaris, Snowmobiling, Fat Biking, Hiking and Climbing. Our experienced outdoor specialists can organise numerous activities, excursions and adventures and book them directly through The Highland Center which makes the perfect base for groups visiting Iceland’s interior. Throughout the year, activities can be arranged to suit groups and individuals, including: 4 (% '( -(.+, 4 + $$"' 4 % " + 0 %$, 4 %"& "' 4 .) +# ) -(.+, 4 +(,, (.'-+2 ,$""' 4 $""' 4 '(0$"-"' 4 <,!"' 4 %" ()- + ;" !-, 4 "$"'

Architects Bring Chelsea Spa Closer To Home The award-winning designers behind an inspirational new Chelsea spa have turned the idea of the on its head, swapping a clichéd environment for the feel of a residential house. With 30 years in the spa and wellness sector and 100 worldwide spa and wellness projects under its belt, leading London architectural firm Melt Design Hub, in collaboration with Lázaro Rosa-Violán at Studio Contemporain in Barcelona, has created a highly sophisticated home away from home at Gazelli House, Walton Street – and an abject lesson in making the complex look simple. With an elaborate brief – complicated by the fact the building is based in an urban conservation area – Melt’s bespoke design has challenged preconceptions by creating an ‘anti-spa’, replacing the white washed

walls, reception desks and product displays of a runof-the-mill spa with a series of homely rooms. Organised over three floors, on the ground floor retail area there’s a ‘sitting room’ instead of a reception area and in the basement ‘guest rooms’ instead of therapy rooms, with linen-lined beds and storage units concealed behind sliding doors. On the first floor, in the stunning ‘Sky Parlour’ – where arching skylights capture the clouds above – sumptuous mirrored walls conceal the toilet and kitchen areas. Magic and illusion are at the heart of the design. A fantastical, floating golden staircase –formed out of folded steel sections then “veneered” in patternised brass sheets – links all the floors at the building’s heart, and topped with book lined walls it is reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. Tiny from the outside, the

highly-choreographed building opens up and out into a series of rooms, from hot shower cubicles with glass ceilings to a garden terrace, straight out of a Spanish ‘terraza’. “We like to challenge the accepted norms and defy convention, so at Gazelli House we’ve created something very different from your ordinary spa,” says Melt director Asif Iqbal. “Our projects are designed to delight and inspire, while simultaneously delivering value and profit to our clients, and the laid back feel belies the intricate and painstaking detailing of every plane and surface finish. It’s a house and a destination, and a highly crafted piece that appears almost accidental.” Find out more at www.meltdesignhub.com or www.gazellihouse.com
