Macdonald Resorts strikes gold again
an evaluation of on-resort guest facilities, amenities and services.
For the second year in a row, Macdonald Hotels & Resorts has again been awarded Gold Crown status for eight of its resorts by the world’s leading provider of holiday exchange services – RCI.
Simon Jackson, CEO of Macdonald Resorts, said: “It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teams that they have secured the much-coveted RCI Gold Crown award for a second time.
The RCI Gold Crown rating is RCI’s highest accolade for resort quality and is largely based on the feedback and comments from the thousands of RCI members who, at RCI’s invitation, complete an RCI Welcome Home comment card on return from their RCI exchange holidays.
RCI has more than 40 years’ experience in supporting staff at its affiliated resorts in the day-to-day resort operations, as well as helping more than a million families to get away on exchange holidays each year. The RCI member community now numbers 3.8 million timeshare owners worldwide, with more than 4,000 resorts affiliated to its holiday exchange programme in over 100 countries.
The RCI Gold Crown awards were presented to its four Spanish resorts; La Ermita, Dona Lola, Leila Playa, Villacana, Spain; The Macdonald Elmers Court Hotel & Resort in the New Forest, UK; Macdonald Plas Talgarth Holiday Resort in the Snowdonia National Park in Wales; the Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Spa in the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park, and the Macdonald Spey Valley Golf & Country Club in Aviemore, both in Scotland, rounding out Macdonald’s RCI Gold Crown winners. Macdonald Lochanhully Woodland Club in Scotland’s Cairngorm National Park also secured RCI Silver Crown status for the second year. In addition to member feedback, other criteria taken into consideration when awarding RCI Gold Crown status to a resort are that it meets RCI’s exacting standards in areas such as housekeeping, maintenance, hospitality service levels, and check-in/ check-out efficiencies, as well as satisfying
Dimitris Manikis, VP, Business Development, RCI Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “Delivering a quality holiday experience to our members lies at the heart of our core purpose and promise. It means everything to RCI to know that our members can be assured they will enjoy a consistent quality across the resorts we send them to and for that reason we applaud and congratulate Macdonald Resorts for investing in providing a guest experience that both meets and exceeds the expectations of our members, as is evident from the feedback we have received from those visiting these deserving resorts.” Macdonald Hotels & Resorts is privately owned and has been offering guests fine hospitality options for 25 years. It operates over 40 hotels across the UK and has resorts in the UK, Spain and Portugal.

Nittan smoke detectors stop false alarms from e-cigarette vaping Nittan’s Evolution EV-DP Dual Wavelength Photoelectric smoke detectors have been installed in a Southampton pub and live music venue to prevent false alarms caused by vaping. With the rise of the e-cigarette, which can be smoked in public places such as bars and restaurants, a new, unexpected problem has arisen: false alarms from vaping. The issue of steam causing smoke alarms to false alarm is well documented. Generally speaking, the Infra Red scattered light technology currently used for commercial smoke detectors is unable to distinguish between larger size particles like steam or dust, that are major causes of false alarms, and particles generated by combustion (fire). E- cigarettes feature a cartridge containing nicotine in a solution of either propylene glycol or glycerine and water. In an enclosed venue where there are a number of people vaping, this can have the same effect as steam on a smoke detector, leading to false alarms. With an estimated 2.8 million adults in Great Britain (6% of the adult population) currently using e cigarettes (up from only 700,000 in 2012) and the NHS backing them as an effective quitting aid, their use is likely to continue to increase. Atelier Pod
Atelier Pod designed the guest rooms of the new Radisson Blu in Marrakech The Radisson Blu Hotel Marrakech has just officially opened its doors. Xavier Guerrand Hermes and the investment fund Actif Invest invited Atelier Pod to design the accommodation of their new Marrakech property operated by the Carlson Rezidor hotel chain. The main design challenge was to create a contemporary and innovative aesthetic recalling the essence of the red city. The hotel is located in Gueliz, and is part of a mixed-use property including apartments and a shopping center called “Carre Eden.
The design team had a tailored approach of extending the urban dynamic of the city to provide a relaxing, atypical atmosphere. Atelier Pod focused on the design layout before looking for the aesthetic DNA. The purpose was to repeal the separation between the bathroom and the bedroom, and make a typical object of the eastern Arab language: the mousharabieh screen, the design highlight of the room.
The sliding screen cuts a white monolithic bloc, creating an elegant separation between the bathroom and bedroom, showing on one side a vanity counter and on the other, a dressing table. The elegance is in the use of the mousharabieh, and the extension of its perspective behind a mirror which provides a visual connection between the bedroom and the bathroom. The dressing is the second master piece of the room, designed as a multifunctional carved monolithic bloc, used as bathroom storage with a corner minibar column.

The holistic design idea of the room is the harmonious blend between ethnic patterns and classical Arabian Geometrics. The distortion of patterns and their large glossy effect is what creates full and empty spaces incarnating the closet and contrasting the primitive ethnic patterns on the wallpaper. The Deluxe room however, has a different orientation than the standard room. It has more width than length, which allows a position of the bed facing the view, whereas the desk is placed right behind the bed. The bathroom faces the view as well, making the entire space bathe in natural day light; the effect is enhanced as the deluxe bathroom is designed as a wet room, with the same mineral material covering the space. The rain shower cubicle is isolated into the bathroom space with a thick glass screen. The Space and material blend characterizes a contemporary understanding of the importance of a functions balance and the interpretation of the Moroccan heritage, all harmoniously merged in one space and making it personal to Radisson Marrakech.

Zapper
Completely Cardless - Zapper Launches Game Changing In-App Loyalty Cards London, 15 September 2016 – Zapper, the fast growing consumer marketing and insight platform enabled by mobile payments, has been disrupting the global hospitality industry for the last 18 months. Now, as Zapper launches its in-app loyalty card to automatically earn rewards with every payment, diners around the world are able ditch their cards completely. Go Burrito, a popular and rapidly expanding burrito bar in Lancaster has even launched a ‘fast lane’ accepting only Zapper payments, to help increase footfall and staff efficiency. Owner James Short said “We’re really excited to launch Zapper’s new in-app loyalty scheme whereby our customers can gain digital stamps every time they purchase a burrito in either of our venues encouraging repeat transactions. With a simpler and automated process, customers are seamlessly rewarded and we can check the status of each card in the Zapper portal to avoid any confusion and discrepancies.” Zapper users already love the ability to settle their bill in seconds, automatically redeem vouchers and leave instant feedback on their dining experience. However, many still find their wallet laden with loyalty cards and expired paper vouchers. With an increasingly competitive market space, it’s critical for businesses to go the extra mile to reward and retain their customers. More than two in five (46%) consumers said they would be more likely to pay for things using their smartphone if they were offered rewards, reported in Mintel Consumer Attitudes towards Mobile Payments UK 2016 report.
Successful operations recognise customers are increasingly tech-savvy when it comes to hunting down offers and rewards with RetailMeNot finding nearly one third of consumers use their smartphone to search for deals before dining out. As such, targeted offers and personalisation are an essential way to encourage repeat visits, create habit and reward customers for their time and spend in your venue. Zapper’s seamless new upgrade to its all-in-one marketing platform makes this very simple for UK businesses using its solution. Combined with Z-Beacon location-based technology and a simple direct messaging platform, businesses such as Rodizio Rico are benefiting from new, smarter ways to engage with customers. Alex Severi, General Manager at Rodizio Rico comments “Zapper is fantastic, it has made our life easier when taking payments, splitting the bill etc. It really is so simple. We have had a great response offering in-app vouchers and also love the new loyalty functionality. We already have it up and running in all of our sites in Birmingham and London to encourage customers to keep visiting the restaurants and paying with Zapper. Best payment option on the market” The growth in smartphone use has driven significant changes in customer behaviour and presents a huge opportunity to businesses. Findings from the 2016 Bond Loyalty Report with VISA shows 57% of their members would like to engage with loyalty programs via mobile phone and 3C’s revealed 60% of consumers make more monthly visits / purchases because of a Website: www.zapper.com
mobile enabled loyalty programme. Zapper gives businesses a smart way to automatically understand their customers and reward loyalty to encourage future spend through in-app rewards, messaging, push notifications and beacon technology. Gerry Hooper, CEO Zapper UK, says, “We’ve seen an incredible uptake in the first week of introducing the digital loyalty card with 10% of our restaurant partners launching their own loyalty rewards scheme within the Zapper app. This is such a simple and seamless process for both the user and the venue with more than 8% of our UK users already opted in to a loyalty card. We are really excited about this feature as a simple way to encourage repeat visits and habitual use of mobile payments.” Due to its simplicity, Zapper is gaining momentum, going from strength-to-strength in 10 countries and thousands of different businesses. Easily adapted to any payment environment, it seamlessly provides industries such as Hospitality, Retail, Bill Payments and Transport with an ideal all-in-one platform to understand and reward loyal customers, encouraging re-use and sharing amongst peers. The Zapper app is free to download for Android, iOS and Windows Phone platforms. For more information about Zapper please visit: www.zapper.com

Hotel Indigo
Extensive refurb of Hotel Indigo Liverpool completes Work at Liverpool’s Hotel Indigo and Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill is officially complete following an extensive refurbishment. The ground floor of the Chapel Street hotel, which is managed by Valor Hospitality Europe, has been transformed with a new modern design and an appetising new restaurant menu. As well as the bar and restaurant, the reception, gym and downstairs Cotton Lounge area have also benefited from the investment. Designed by the acclaimed interior designer, Gavin Liddle of Greyline Design, the hotel’s style now reflects Liverpool’s music and industrial heritage as well as cultural hot-spots from around the city. Liverpool’s once booming cotton trade is represented in the woven-effect wallpapers in the reception area and the reception desk and maitre’d station were designed to replicate old haberdashery units. Inspiration was also drawn from the city’s abandoned tobacco factories and the Albert Dock which is reflected in the distressed wood, exposed bulbs and timber drawers. Links to Liverpool’s impact on the 1960s music scene can be found in the artwork and decorative touches around the hotel including drum pendant lights over the reception desk and a yellow submarine in the bookcase. The black painted bricks in the reception
area as well as the teal and black tiles to the front of the bar stem from nearby Mathew Street and the Cavern Club. Further hints to Liverpool’s history can be found in the classic, retro furniture in the reception which reflects the style of the 1950s and 1960s.
scene. He is a true original, whose name has become synonymous with great food, impeccable service, at an affordable price. These are traits that will continue as we enter into a new chapter for the Marco brand here in Liverpool.
One of the main features in the restaurant is a bold geometric print floor, which was inspired by the façade of the Museum of Liverpool.
“After five years in the city, it was time for a fresh new outlook, and our guests will be impressed with the look and feel of the place - it has dramatically changed for the better, a place where people feel welcome and relaxed.
Managing director of Valor Hospitality Europe, Brian McCarthy, said: “Gavin Liddle’s design has really brought to life our vision for the Hotel Indigo Liverpool. The sleek and contemporary design, as well as the brand new menu at the MPW restaurant has taken our offering at this hotel to a whole new level. “We’re driven by providing the best possible hotel experience to all of our guests which is why we are currently investing in all 19 of the properties in our portfolio. The transformation of the Hotel Indigo and the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill is an example of the high standards we are aiming for and we hope to replicate this success across all of our hotels.” Mark Tasker, general manager at Hotel Indigo Liverpool, said: “As the Godfather of modern cooking, this relaunch reaffirms Marco Pierre White’s place at the very top of Liverpool’s growing restaurant Website: www.hotelindigoliverpool.co.uk
“Our food offering has also expanded with a new lounge menu for those wanting a quick bite, while a revitalised main menu combines some of our most popular dishes with a host of exciting new additions, all reflecting Marco’s passion for classic food done consistently well.” Further investment in the hotel is planned with upgrades to the bedrooms expected to take place in the future. Valor manages the 19 properties in its UK portfolio on behalf of investment vehicles affiliated with MCAP Global Finance Ltd. (“MCAP”), which is a UK subsidiary of New York based investment adviser Marathon Asset Management, LP.

This means ensuring it is not only well-equipped, stylish, has excellent fixtures and fittings, but also offers luxury features such as the indulgence of an indulgent freestanding bath tub, or a large walk-in ‘power shower’, with enough room for two.
bathroom space has to feel modern and decadent with beautiful taps, striking mirrors and ‘wow factor’ vanity units and basins. Designers are faced with the task of meeting these expectations, whilst also considering the practicalities of a hotel space, including cleaning regulations and of course meeting a budget. In response, Sottini’s new bathroom collection encapsulates impeccable design with an alliance in form and function, providing the ultimate vision for discerning architects and specifiers aiming to provide world class quality within their hotel bathroom, with product that expresses simplicity and confidence. With an extensive range of brassware, furniture, sanitary ware and shower solutions, Sottini’s balanced form enables the creation of a fresh environment to enjoy a peaceful stay with the luxury and flexibility of an invigorating shower or relaxing bathing experience. The new Sottini vision invites customers to simply imagine their own unique bathroom space.

W Hotels Worldwide
The Great (In And) Outdoors: W Seattle Unveils Completion Of Multi-Million Dollar Renovation Stunning Redesign of all 415 Guest Rooms and Nine Suites Complete Hotel’s Phased Makeover, Channeling the Natural Beauty of the Emerald City in an Innovative Way
renovation of W Seattle is part of an overall W brand strategy to continue investing in our North American portfolio. Demand for the W brand in the US and abroad is as hot as ever.”
W Hotels Worldwide, part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: HOT), today announced the completion of its highly anticipated multi- million dollar renovation of W Seattle. Inspired by the hotel’s dynamic Pacific Northwest location, all 415 guest rooms and nine stylish suites have been transformed, completing the multi-phase renovation that included the hotel’s signature Living Room (the W brand’s take on the traditional hotel lobby), Trace restaurant and state of the art meeting spaces. Host Hotels & Resorts, Inc. (NYSE: HST), the owner of W Seattle, partnered with design firm Krause + Sawyer, along with the award-winning design team from W Hotels to reimagine the hotel.
Naturally Connected
In a nod to the city’s reputation as one of the defining music capitals of the world, the W brand also recently announced that W Seattle will soon be home to the first W Sound Suite in North America, a private music studio and writer’s room for professional recording artists, studio musicians, as well as hotel guests, to record in style while on the road. “W Seattle is an iconic part of the city’s social scene; a place for guests to relax and enjoy the W brand’s signature cocktail culture and somewhere for locals to let their hair down,” said Anthony Ingham, Global Brand Leader, W Hotels Worldwide. “Along with commitments from our ownership groups, the
Inspired by the destination’s timeless beauty, W Seattle is naturally connected to the city’s burgeoning business empires of tech, music, design and more, which sit alongside the lush wilderness that the Emerald City is renowned for. Serving as the setting where backpacks and briefcases mix and mingle the hotel’s innovative design mirrors the duality of this cosmopolitan center. Upon entry, grand wooden ‘lodge poles’ (inspired by the Northwest’s Native American culture) and tree-ring flooring (a nod to the city’s logging industry), greet guests alongside a DJ booth crafted from an airplane turbine, which illustrates Seattle’s aviation history. Newly reimagined guestrooms evoke a sense of the ultimate ‘urban lodge’ through design that captures the innovative spirit of Seattle. The color palette is derived from the blue hues of Seattle, with pops of purple, teal and yellow gold incorporated into a grey canvas inspired by the city’s infamously moody skies. The focal point of each room is the headboard ‘Lodge Wall’, connecting creative design to nature through stacked wood beams backlit by LED lights. The spirit of the great outdoors is contrasted against elements inspired by the city’s iconic grunge music Website: www.wseattle.com
scene. The rooms feature plaid accent pillows and a Pendleton pattern reflected in the silver, white and gray Mylar wallpaper created exclusively for the guest rooms. Details mimicking Seattle’s storied aviation history influenced materials and finishes – polished, aerodynamic shapes for wall and desk lighting, as well as the design of the desk chair. The throw blanket pattern comes from a Boeing 747 model kit on scale, and a pillow with a jet image punctuates each bed. “From the moment our guests enter our Living Room to the moment they head upstairs they will be struck with a design that exceeds expectations and connects them to the roots of what the Emerald City has to offer,” said Richard Hill, General Manager, W Seattle. Each room and suite features signature W amenities including: Bluetooth-enabled TV, access to high-speed WiFi, the Bliss® Spa sinkside six bath amenities, the signature W Hotels Bed and the brand’s signature Whatever/Whenever® service, which provides guests whatever they want, whenever they want it. “The inspiration for the rooms and suites of W Seattle is shaped by the juxtaposition of Seattle culture and outdoor recreation,” added Kajsa Krause, Principal, Krause + Sawyer. “Before we took on the design, we spent time observing the lifestyle of the city. We could see that Seattleites are naturally connected to their region, with a close relationship between urban and rural. We wanted W Seattle’s design to mirror the city’s widespread tech innovation, yet make deference to the area’s inherent beauty.”

Modern Times Hotel
the World Of Hospitality
Modern Times Hotel Designed by the architectural practice of IttenBrechbühl and constructed by the main contractor HRS, Modern Times Hotel enjoys a perfect location amongst the hills above the town of Vevey. It sits adjacent to the motorway for easy access by car, only a stones-throw from the new Charlie Chaplin Museum with the mountains, the heart of Vevey itself, and the famous UNESCO World Heritage site of the Lavaux vineyards closeby. Thanks to its highly visible location, the buildings seems to welcome its visitors
with open arms just after they leave the main road. Modern Times Hotel has become a new gateway to the region and is emblematic of Charlie Chaplin’s presence in Vevey. The hotel is located between the main roads to the north and the quiet residential quarter of the town to the south which is still under development. By way of its position, lying parallel to the hillside, the building itself both defines and serves to protect the whole of the buildable area of the site.
The building is perfectly embedded into the naturally sloping topography of the site taking full advantage of its relief and surrounded by a large landscaped garden. At the heart of this park one may walk amongst the colours of the Mediterranean and come across a small pond adjacent to the main terrace on the Southern aspect of the hotel. Protected by a canopy, the terrace offers great views to the mountainside of the “Rochers de Naye”. The building stretches along the length of the site but

its façade has been designed as a rhythm of elements broken by only two folds which announce the main entrance to the hotel and the location of the restaurant. Ribbons of metal that run all around the building otherwise highlight its horizontality. Panels of warmly coloured vertical glazing– brown, bronze, and grey – give the building an elegant, yet calm, character. The northern façade of the hotel reads as a sequence of planes which change in their appearance according ones particular viewpoint and also with the changing natural light. The ground floor is a unique and open space featuring the main reception, restaurant, lounge bar, and conference facilities. The different activities function
independently of the main hotel and allow it to have a life all through the year. The decor of the different spaces are distinguished by their own particular atmosphere: In the reception area, a large kinetic sculpture commissioned from the artist Charles Morgan and inspired by Chaplin’s lm “Modern Times” adds metallic touches to a colour palette which is predominantly black and white; in the conference rooms, an elegant floor of solid oak; fresh and lively colours of purples, oranges, and blues give the lounge bar the feeling of a New York speakeasy; the restaurant features Versailles parquet flooring and its atmosphere is more intimate with large lamps illuminating a softer palette of beige and grey punctuated by blues and greens. HOIST ACCESSIBILITY TO INCREASE BOOKINGS Adding one extra fixture, which requires no space, in just a couple of bedrooms could significantly increase the number, length and spend of visitors. Under British Standards (BS8300:2009), for new buildings, a minimum 5% of bedrooms should have a fixed tracked‑hoist system or similar system giving the same degree of convenience and safety. But campaigners say few hotels, especially among the major chains, provide any rooms with hoist facilities, even in newbuild.

Paris: A Destination & Inspiration The interiors of all 1,025 guestrooms and suites have been redesigned with residential texture and details inspired by the destination: the lighting and the muted colour palette of grey, light blue and charcoal are underscored by eye-catching accents. Travel and discovery are woven into the fabric of the design,
Art and design also provide an element of discovery throughout the public spaces of Le Méridien Etoile. Art Curator Marion Vignal selected four Parisian, contemporary artists to express their unique perspectives of Paris through different mediums. For instance, Arnold Goron, the sought-after sculptor and set designer for several French fashion houses, created
the arrival art installation and impressive mural fresco, both composed of brass petals forming a map of Paris. From the arrival lighting installation that represents the traffic circles of the city, to the custom-tiled accent wall that pays homage to Paris’ metro system, Le Méridien Etoile has transformed the staid, traditional lobby into the brand’s signature Le Méridien Hub. Le Méridien Etoile features 2,500 square metre of thoughtfully-designed meeting spaces with design cues taken from the 17th arrondissement. The small meeting rooms or ‘Petits Salons’ hold up to 25 people and are named after local streets, while the large ‘Grands Salons’ hold up to 1,200 people and bear the names of neighbouring avenues and boulevards. Each of the spaces is designed with the brand’s mid-century modern aesthetic and offers modular furniture that allows personalization. Custom photography, depicting scenes from each Boulevard, was shot by one of France’s most influential Instagrammers, Vutheara Kham, and aims to inspire creativity. Help preserve the untouched beauty of Botswana with the launch of The Lodge at Feline Fields Discover Botswana’s wilderness at The Lodge at Feline Fields, a new luxurious safari lodge nestled in the heart of the savannah, west of the Okavango Delta (felinefields.com). Designed by renowned South African architect Alwyn Petersen, the Lodge embodies authentic luxury. Made up of just six suites, each offers spectacular views over the savannah. The final phase marks the official launch, with all accommodations available for bookings in 2017. Constructed from natural materials, the 1,000 sq ft suites create a connection with the outside. Three
luxury tented suites offer an idyllic hideaway, while three two-storey suites have a raised king-sized bed, spacious bathroom and lounge area with a daybed which can be used for additional family accommodation. Outside, these enjoy a private pool and staircase leading to a breathtaking upper deck. Under the thatch, guests may relax in the shade, indulge in a private dinner or sleep surrounded by the sounds of the savannah. At the main lodge, a spacious open-air lounge and decked area are ideally positioned to watch the sunset over the far horizon. Fresh cuisine is served daily, inspired by the Kalahari and grown by the Lodge.
Game drives are conducted at flexible times through the day and night when possible in open safari vehicles. Walking safaris are possible, with a chance to witness desert adapted species and plains wildlife. Two special ‘fat’ bicycles, adapted for use on sand, are parked outside each suite to cycle to the main lodge or explore the Kalahari accompanied by an experienced guide. At the Lodge, work up a sweat at the Bush gym or with a game of tennis, before cooling off in the 25m lap pool or relaxing with a spa treatment in the open air. Garden State Hotel
Garden State Hotel Techne Architecture + Interior Design Garden State Hotel is a superb, purpose-built four-storey bar and hospitality venue at 95 Flinders Lane.Technē has completely rebuilt the venue while preserving its distinctive exterior, itself a heritage Victorian era building that began life as a textile mill in 1896. The design centres on a large multi-level beer garden, a startling oasis in the middle of the CBD’s network of laneways. Reflecting this verdant theme, the name Garden State Hotel borrows Victoria’s century-old state title, ‘The Garden State’. The hugely ambitious 2000 square-metre project, with a capacity for 840 guests, preserves much of the original textile factory’s sawtooth roof while opening its central bays to form a terraced beer garden that has the feel of a Victorian conservatory, a hidden botanical haven to be explored.
The contemporary architecturally designed pub is a versatile space, with different rooms and areas to support varied audiences and functions. Technē imbues these diverse spaces with intriguing interconnections and a sense of exploration for their guests. While a front bar is still likely to be a vibrant community watering hole, bespoke dining areas and beautiful private function rooms create opportunities where the pub now services the entire hospitality spectrum, from casual get togethers to finer dining and corporate events. As well as the multi-level beer garden at its heart, the project involved the creation of a street level public bar at the front of the site and a five-level structure (four of which are open to the public) at the rear. The sophisticated Technē design creates a flow between
spaces diverse in function, capacity and architectural inspiration. The New York-inspired Garden Grill will be the venue’s main dining area and also features the Raw Bar, serving Melbourne’s freshest seafood. The basementlevel Rose Garden is an intimate cocktail bar with chandeliers, eclectic antique wall décor and giant rose motifs hand-painted by local artisans. Other spaces include the Balcony Dining Room, for small group bookings, and The Observatory on the second floor, the venue’s premier functions space, which will hold up to 120 people in a light-filled room with views onto both the garden below and the city outside.

The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences
Kinnersley Kent Design redesigns one of London’s most iconic hotels - The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences Leading British design studio Kinnersley Kent Design has completed the multi-million-pound refurbishment of one of London’s most iconic hotels – The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences – remodeling the interiors and adding new layers of warm and subtle glamour to this family-run, five-star, thoroughlyindependent jewel in the heart of Mayfair. The scope of works undertaken by Kinnersley Kent Design, one of the UK’s most established and celebrated practices, includes brand strategy,
positioning and identity work - undertaken in partnership with the hotel’s owners and close-knit internal team - as well as external architectural works and a full interior architectural and design renovation, transforming the hotel’s public spaces, from the lobby, lounge and first floor meeting areas to a spectacular new bar – ‘THE BAR at The Athenaeum’ - and the elegant, day-to-night restaurant offer – ‘Galvin at The Athenaeum’. Michelin-starred chefs The Galvin Brothers are now
in charge of the full F&B offer at The Athenaeum, in an exciting partnership for both parties. The F&B offer for guests ranges from all meals and snacks from breakfast-time through to dinner, as well as afternoon tea, private dining and 24/7 in-room dining. Known for their impeccable French cuisine, acclaimed restaurateurs Chris and Jeff Galvin will be offering a modern take on classic British dishes alongside established favourites, using seasonal British flavours and home-grown produce.
The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences
Design Approach:
Brand Refresh, Positioning and Graphic Design:
Speaking of the design approach to the project, Kinnersley Kent Design Partner Jill Higgins explained, ‘Above all, we were looking to open the hotel up in terms of light, space, circulation and visibility. The building’s original art deco nature has also been brought back to life by replacing the ground floor elevation with an elegant bronze façade with brass details referencing the 1930s modernist style.’
Kinnersley Kent Design’s Brand Director Lindie Kramers said of the agency’s approach: ‘Our thinking was based on the brand’s core strengths – its heritage, attitude and location. Located in the heart of Mayfair, the brand is delightfully English (in all the right ways), independently-owned, with an art deco spirit. And they’ve always done things differently.’ The re-branding and positioning project included

interviewing 20 key staff members to get a real insider feel for the hotel, as well as thorough research into the hotel’s great history – especially its legendary associations with the world of film. Above all, the hotel was clearly understood, both internally and externally, to be about individuals, from the staff to the high levels of tailored service, to the character of individual guests. Even Jim, the doorman, has his own blog! ‘Our repositioning strategy was based on celebrating this individuality’, Lindie Kramers explained. ‘This

one-of-a-kind hotel offers a refreshing alternative for guests seeking a more personalized experience and our aim was to ensure the customer was at the heart of that proposition. This formed the foundation of our new brand ethos – ‘Stay Individual’ – which is brought to life at every touch point and across all branding materials.’ ‘We like to do things differently at the Athenaeum,” commented General Manager Jeremy Hopkins. ‘We are stylish and glamorous without pretension and our team are allowed to let their individual personalities shine through, so that the guest experience is enhanced and crafted just for them. When guests arrive we might say hello to strangers, but we say goodbye to friends.’ The work led to a re-naming of the hotel as The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences (formerly ‘& Apartments’) to stay true to the brand’s English heritage. The positioning also lay behind the offering of British classics by The Galvin Brothers on their restaurant menu for the first time. The updated identity work then led to a huge raft of graphic applications, with Kinnersley Kent Director of Graphics Kenny Sum and team overseeing the design of almost 80 individual items, from menus and coasters through to luggage tags, cocktail invitations, notepads, pencils and guest postcards.
The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences
Design Walk-through:
Lobby and overall interiors palette
Exterior façade, entrance and terrace
For the newly-remodeled, double-height lobby area where the whole mezzanine galleried section has been squared off and pulled back to double the available space - the design team applied a playful interior architectural signature in the form of an eclectic mix of classic British furniture items, to reflect the hotel’s strong British heritage, mixed with contemporary and mid-century-modern European pieces.
The hotel’s external appearance has been transformed, with an entirely new ground-floor-level façade offering guests spectacular leafy views out across the Royal Green Park via new floor-to-ceiling windows. An impressive new, fully DDA-compliant main entrance has been relocated to the left of the façade, directly alongside the ‘Living Wall’ and created according to a design aesthetic of ‘authentic deco’. It therefore features classic architectural details of the era, such as stepped bronzework and geometric shapes, with a pattern overlaid on the doors, along with bespoke gilded metal inlays, featuring abstracted art deco shaping. Outside the front of the hotel, a new terrace area has been created, forming one of the very few outdoor dining areas on Piccadilly in what was a relatively lowkey, but very successful, transformation of available space in the project’s earliest phase. The design team also converted an existing secondary entrance on Downs Street into a new glass box with solid doors to serve as a direct entrance for non-resident guests to the hotel’s stunning new destination bar – ‘THE BAR at The Athenaeum’.
‘We think of it as ‘mismatching’ with an educated, curated eye’, Jill Higgins said, adding that the chosen materials palette was ‘Rich, understated, high quality, indulgent and luxurious.’ The scheme features lots of contrast and texture, with high-gloss and reeded finishes and thin and elegant metal forms set against a muted and subtle colour palette, punctuated by bright and contemporary accents. Materials include mesh-within-glass and a curated rose bronze that the Kinnersley Kent Design team created in order to get the exact look and feel required for the galleried balustrade to the mezzanine. Stunning, open, metal screens create semi-private zoning between the open-plan lobby and restaurant space, whilst the columns, which are a strong feature of the space, are clad in a striking, narrow-reeded dark timber. The overall result is both playful and
The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences
geometric, but not overly symmetrical, with the hotel’s art deco roots acknowledged but approached with a thoroughly contemporary sensibility. Furniture and fittings include two statement ‘Meshmatic Chandeliers’ by Atelier Rick Tegelaar, used here for the first time in the UK and chosen for their lightness, elegance and sense of playfulness, as well as to tie in with the metal in the overall materials palette. The space features a carefully-chosen selection of elegant chairs in smokey grey and teal velvets, with mustard and tangerine upholstery in leather and other fabrics, with all chairs chosen for their interesting tones, contrasts and juxtapositions. The main flooring in the lobby is a dark-fumed oak with a herringbone pattern, with marble used to delineate the circulation area and stairs. The stairs have been re-clad with a polished plaster finish on the inside and marble treads, whilst the outside is clad the same way as the columns with narrow-reeded panelling. Touches of greenery throughout to refer to the Living Wall and to Green Park and underscore the hotel’s English heritage. A new high-level hanging plant feature in the entrance space gives the meeting room a sense of being fully enclosed within the Living Wall. Art is also a vital piece of the overall integrated scene dressing and was selected for the scheme by art consultant Robin Greene, in partnership with the hotel’s owners, to express the ‘Stay Individual’ brand ethos and to link to a number of key themes, including the hotel’s historical links to the film industry and a contemporary commitment to young British artists.
In a move to be one of the first London five-star hotels of its size to offer a personal and barrier free check-in experience via iPad and a concierge service, the modernised Athenaeum now offers a seamless welcome which flows from lobby to lounge, bar and restaurant. Galvin at The Athenaeum The entire ground floor has been designated as potential hospitality space, with a brand new espresso bar serving the lobby, as well as afternoon tea later in the day. ‘The food and beverage offer takes up the whole width of the right hand side of the space’, explained Jill Higgins. ‘The new, more open restaurant space was created to be both subtle and refined, offering casual fine dining with food very much the hero. The aim is to attract both guests and local residents and business users in Mayfair, where the demographic has changed notably in the past decade, with the area attracting larger numbers of young people, a more international mix and a notable increase in high-fashion outlets and premises.’ Kinnersley Kent Design worked both with The Athenaeum and with The Galvin Brothers on the design of the F&B spaces, as well as creating the identities and designing all brand collateral, from uniforms to tableware. An existing, centerpiece chandelier in the restaurant was retained because it was in great condition and,

with its spare, mid-century aesthetic, fitted perfectly with the style of the new furnishings on the ground floor. The flooring in the restaurant space is white oiled oak, whilst seating is a mix of bespoke, buttoned velvet banquettes and timber, metal and leather chairs. All tables were bespoke-designed by Kinnersley Kent Design to create the optimum arrangement of tables within the space. THE BAR at The Athenaeum THE BAR at The Athenaeum is a sensual delight and a space that really comes alive at night, with a deliciously dark and tactile contemporary palette of blue-green, lemon yellow and stylish dark green suede, velvet and leather, with full-height glass walls backed by the tropical feel of the full-height ‘Living Wall’ greenery outside. Once you step inside, London’s busy Piccadilly thoroughfare feels a million miles away and there’s a sense of being in a secret, subterranean destination. The ambience, style and vibe in the bar have been created in partnership by one of the world’s leading cocktail gurus, Giancarlo Mancino, together with The Galvin Brothers. The new bar will be a destination in its own right for those looking to discover new craft spirits, signature classic cocktails with a twist and a distinctive range of whiskies, for which the hotel has long been famous, including The Athenaeum’s own blend and pioneering craft spirits. In all an impressive 160 brands have been included in the menu, with more added when ‘discovered’. ‘THE BAR will be known for its new and unusual
62

drinks menu. Don’t expect to see Campari, Bombay or Gordons in here,’ Giancarlo Mancino said. ‘The drinks will be ‘showcased’. Theatre will be a huge part of the bar experience and all drinks will be served in elegant, classic glassware which I have especially created to enhance the flavours.’ The bar itself creates a focal point within the space, flanked by bespoke cabinets, which hold the hotel’s extensive whiskey collection as well as a curated selection of interesting artefacts, chosen by Kinnersley Kent Design. The bar’s design takes the signature use of reeded finishes to another level, via a high-gloss reeded black front with stepped brass details and a Nero Dorato marble bar-top with striking gold and white geometric veining. Back-lit glass shelves create an elegant framework for the display of Giancarlo Mancino’s bespoke glassware. The furniture here really ups the elegance factor, with long, slim forms and plenty of sinuous metal. Stand-out pieces include a console designed by Kinnersley Kent Design to the rear of the space and rugs, bespoke-designed by Kinnersley Kent Design and manufactured by Stepevi. Seating is a carefully-

chosen mix of black velvet and brass barstools, lounge chairs in butternut velvet and armchairs with a black leather exterior and saffron nubuck interior. There are sofas for more serious lounging, including velvet Chesterfields, whilst the small drinks tables feature a brass base and Nero Marquina marble tops and the larger ones a black base and Verde Guatemala marble tops. Flooring is white-oiled oak, as in the restaurant. Also at the rear of the space, a screen plays a bespoke film sequence of passionate embraces from the movies, in a reference to the hotel’s long history of links with Hollywood greats, including former guests Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Shirley Maclaine, Cary Grant, John Wayne and Russell Crowe. The Gallery On the first floor – glimpsed as a mezzanine from the double-height atrium, The Gallery offers an exclusive feel and two new stunning private dining rooms with amazing views onto Piccadilly and across to Green Park, as well as meeting rooms aimed at a gap in the market for those looking something more relaxed and personal. The design feel here is informal and more domestic in scale.

Jeremy Hopkins, General Manager at The Athenaeum, concluded ‘We have thoroughly enjoyed revealing the new Athenaeum to guests. We’ve worked very hard with Kinnersley Kent Design to get every detail absolutely right and we knew almost immediately that they were able to share our vision for the hotel. London may well have the most diverse hotel offering in the world, but luxury hotels now have to meet the demands of today’s guests. Our guests are confident, stylish and independent and our reception mirrors their character, enabling us to meet their expectations and provide a truly individual experience.’

Café Pista
Café Pista New café in the heart of Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, Montréal. As a continuation to the implementation of food trucks in Montreal, the Pista Café Mobile, where you can find some of the best coffee in town, was created a little over two years ago as a tricycle/invention. After being showcased in all of Montreal’s festivals, the Pista Café tricycle found an address of its own in the heart of Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie.
What a wonderful challenge for Les Ateliers Guyon design studio.
The goal: To make the shift from being a nomad café to being a sedentary one, while still keeping a street stall feel. The chosen location, on the corner of Beaubien and Saint-Vallier, is imbued with both history and character. We’re looking at a simple and refreshing concept: to create a cozy, luminous and unique spot where the inside recreates the outside.
“The Pista Café Mobile is a tricycle which combines human power, technology and the pleasure of a good coffee. The bike itself, completely independent from any other source of energy, relies solely on legs and pedals to provide freshly ground coffee beans.”
After roaming its share of Montreal streets, being part of each of the city’s great events and travelling over 360 km to grind coffee, the Pista Café team called upon Les Ateliers Guyon to design a unique yet familiar universe. Maxime Richard, Pista Café’s owner, tells us:
Bringing the outside in The tricycle concept Pista Café Mobile was the first inspiration for the designers at Les Ateliers Guyon. Félix Guyon explains: “The idea of bringing the outside in came to us instinctively. It wasn’t just our gut feeling; as the concept was a natural extension of the original Pista Café. We wanted to give users an enjoyable, friendly and unpretentious experience in a bright, refreshing space. The idea was simply to make the Café an inviting place, so the customers would feel like they were walking about or sitting in a park. We never thought we would literally bring the outside inside, but it figured that subtle evocation of the volumetric and functional properties of a food-truck-type service

were to surface through our refreshing design.” The Café is divided in two separate sections. On one side lies a long bench, its colors soft and lively, allowing the location’s natural light to shine. On the other, the service section is hemmed in a container-inspired workspace where customers get served as if they were sitting on a food truck stool, waiting for their order. Within this workspace there’s even a place designed especially for the tricycle as there is a little workshop where it can be stored, repaired and admired by the patrons. According to Audrée L. Larose, designer at Les Ateliers Guyon: “From the very beginning, our clients were adamant on the matter: they want the bike, which gets a lot of looks on the street, to be integrated in the design so it can still be gazed upon. But they also made it clear that they didn’t want the whole place to be tricycle-themed. We believe we achieved, through this project, a perfect blend, subtle yet bold, of their first intentions and our concept to bring the outside in.” The conceptual approach to design, from Les Ateliers Guyon Les Ateliers Guyon has been specialized in object design and interior design for over 5 years now and still manages to take us to a foreign world with every creation. Félix Guyon, owner and designer, explains his vision of what design should be and how his evergrowing business taps into that vision: “Chiefly, a good design must not only meet the client’s requirements,
Café Pista
but also that of the user, while bringing their basic needs to a higher level. To ensure that the space or object is deemed comfortable and user-friendly, proper design always comes first for us. Yet, at home, it’s still not enough; we need to add some hot sauce to the mix! Contrasts always find a place in our projects, just like sweet and salty complement one another. When this is not reflected by styles from different times, it can be found in the materials used, in textures, volumes or light sources that cross and give us the edge we’re always looking for. Magic, in all its poetry, must reign over every piece we create, in a subtle marriage between formal and conceptual elements colliding in a unique and calculated design!” Les Ateliers Guyon Félix Guyon, founder at Les Ateliers Guyon, has given birth to a second company specializing in luminaire design, along with its cofounder Audrée L.Larose, called Larose Guyon. Audrée L. Larose and Félix Guyon, design lovers and lovers in life, combine both of their visions and offer a design both masculine and feminine, where contrasts confront each other in a meticulous, subtle and bold design. They tell us their story: “We literally found each other, we form the best possible team we could have imagined. Our strengths support the other’s weaknesses and vice versa. From our often opposed visions arise results which surpass our first intentions every time. We like to see ourselves as follows: Félix is Website: www.lesateliers-guyon.com
a burst of ideas and Audrée is the funnel which refines and gives focus!’’ Together they become a “dream team“, as they put it themselves, laughing. Their combination recently led them to present their Larose-Guyon Luminaire project at ICFF 2016, in New York. An artistic installation project for a few Chicago hotels is also in the works. These two multidisciplinary designers should stay on your radar, as it looks like their next projects are going to be more and more surprising!

This new East London space features an eclectic and adventurous selection of wines available by the glass and bottle from a host of established vineyards and lesser known producers. Designed for both connoisseurs and casual drinkers, the Lounge has an impressive list of over 160 wines and is focussed on making excellent vintages accessible to all, with an intrepid selection of 18 wines available by the glass. Guests are able to experience more exclusive offerings and explore the produce of unchartered regions, such as the Spanish ‘Sacred Shores’ of Ribeira Sacra and Alto Adige in Northern Italy. The menu also includes a strong Austrian line-up which embraces different grape varieties, including Grüner Veltliner, a white grape from the region of Wagram. Another Austrian wine, Rote Kuvee, contains a blend of both Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt red grape varieties grown on the renowned Eisenberg vineyards, along with a small amount of international
companions such as Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to give this wine the final edge. An exciting example of a small production winery featured on the list is the vintage Sangiovese, an Italian red from Casale Chianti, a 16th century Florentine villa and vineyard in Tuscany. The team at the Lounge are made up of passionate wine aficionados that are on hand to advise, and are fuelled by the belief that wine drinking is intended to be fun for all and not an exclusive experience for the few. Small plates and sharing platters will feature on an ever-changing food menu, with each dish created to pair perfectly with the Lounge’s wine list. Devised by Head Chef Sam Dunleavy, this season’s offering includes Slow Cooked Beef Bourguignon Croquettes, Cured Loch Fyne Salmon with Crispy Salmon Crackling and Dedham Vale Venison Sliders. Locally sourced cheese boards, from neighbouring cheesemongers Androuet at Old Spitalfields Market also feature on the food menu as well as charcuterie boards. matched to perfection with individual artisan cheeses, such as creamy, soft brie paired with an elegantly smooth Vin De Pays De Mediterranée from the Rhône Valley of France. Located in the heart of the City and the creative Shoreditch scene, the 1901 Wine Lounge has a relaxed, inviting interior with a warm colour palette and industrial finishes. Befitting its atmospheric surroundings within the hotel, the new space is a stylish cocoon with a mix of cosy armchairs and high tables. A central island counter will provide room for individual and group wine tastings and elaborate displays, adding to the laid-back, casual feel. 1901 Wine Lounge Manager, Adam Varga, believes that the new venture will allow guests to explore and experiment with wine: “By ensuring wine is accessible and allowing our customers to make informed decisions about what to drink, we hope to give guests an enjoyable and illuminating experience.” 1901 Wine Lounge is open from Monday-Friday, 8am until late.

Hakkasan Group
Hakkasan Group Announces Multi-Million Dollar Partnership In New Luxury Bali Resort Next phase of expansion into south east asia in partnership with kaja group and alila hotels & resorts JAKARTA, INDONESIA (8 September 2016) – Hakkasan Group, the global hospitality company, today announced plans to open two new venues at The Cliff at Alila Villas Uluwatu. The destination resort will host the world’s first OMNIA Dayclub and luxury Japanese restaurant Sake No Hana in Bali with partners KAJA Group and Alila Hotel & Resorts. The development of these two brands in Bali is the largest investment of its kind in Indonesia and will generate 150 jobs when they open in Q3 2017, with around 250 additional jobs through the construction of the site. The Indonesian Government has a target of 20 million tourists annually by 2020 so this is set to increase the demand for luxury hospitality. This dynamic partnership is preempting this with a revolutionary new destination in Bali that will change the face of hospitality in Indonesia and reposition the region as a must-see travel spot for tourists. This is the next stage in the partnership announced last year, which will also see Sake no Hana, OMNIA Nightclub and Hakkasan restaurant opening in partnership with KAJA Group and Alila Hotels & Resorts in Alila SCBD Hotel, Jakarta. When complete,
the three luxury experiences will bring 339 jobs to the capital city.
Franky Tjahyadikarta, President Director BUVA Group (parent company of KAJA Group) said:
The partnership and investment from KAJA Group in both Jakarta and Bali totals $38 million.
“Being a homegrown Indonesian company, we are always striving for brand differentiation which drove us to develop the best in leisure destinations; first with hotels and now onto food and entertainment with Hakkasan Group, a global leader in its class. We are incredibly proud to deliver another first in Indonesia and South Asia.”
It is a continuation of Hakkasan Group’s business strategy of taking its brand portfolio into new highgrowth markets across the world and demonstrates its commitment to investing in the region. 57 Atlantic Bar
Cincuenta & Siete 57 BAR ATLÁNTICO (57 Atlantic Bar) is located on an emblematic building on the beachfront with the best sea views of the city of A Coruña, in the northwest corner of Spain. The original catering complex was opened in 1957 as a small cafe next to the beach and the soccer field of Riazor, stadium where the first and renowned team of the city, the Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña, plays. This complex has become, over 50 years later, a reference in the city. 57 BAR ATLÁNTICO has a rectangular shape, approximately 20x16 meters, with entrances and exits to the boardwalk and Riazor beach. It has a glass roof in its central part, as a greenhouse inspiration, which creates brightness and luminosity throughout the day. GOC CREATIVOS [www.goccreativos.com] has made the refurbishment conceiving the space as a
scenario in which the gaze can go through the whole building. They design an open environment with large windows that allows us to contemplate the sea horizon, and the Tower of Hercules from anywhere in the bar. The large central bar counter is island-shaped and organizes the distribution of space giving dynamism and fluidity to the space. It has a cozy terrace with abundant and thick vegetation at the entrance. Graphic design was developed according to the interior design and the tradition of the building, enhancing its historical and local character. The mixture of styles, plants, high and low seating areas, shared tables, and opposing elements in the decoration, provide character and personality to this space.

Josephine Bright Goods LED filament lamps on show at Blenheim Palace An exhibition of works by Italian artist, Michelangelo Pistoletto, featuring Bright Goods ‘The Josephine’ LED filament lamps is on show at Blenheim Palace. Displayed in the China Ante Room inside the palace, the exhibit named ‘quadro di elettrici’ (painting of electric wires) features aesthetic, long linear wires hanging from a wall with Josephine LED filament light bulbs. The impressive exhibit measures 3 meters x 2 meters, creating a stunning centre piece with a perfectly, even glow at floor level. Pistoletto is best known as a pioneer of Arte Povera, a term coined in 1967, referring to a loosely connected group of Italian artists who use found objects within their artworks. ‘Pistoletto experiments with intangibility, using reflections and, in this case, light as his materials. Like the viewer’s reflection in a mirror, the painterly glow cast on the ground by the bulbs is ephemeral,
fleeting, immaterial. Pistoletto calls the work painting – the historical pinnacle of fine art objects – yet uses industrial wiring and bulbs, poking fun at the artistic canon by using light and wires as his paint and brush’ – Blenheim Art Foundation exhibition booklet.

Built in the early 18th Century and gifted to John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough, Blenheim Palace is a stunning stately home in the beautiful countryside of Oxfordshire. Blenheim Palace is a Grade I listed building which has original wooden floors within the China Ante Room. Josephine was chosen from the Bright Goods range of LED filament lights due to its attractive and unique ‘crown’ shaped LED filament. Commenting, Sophia Burr, Marketing Manager at Bright Goods said, “The Josephine is the perfect LED solution for Blenheim Palace and we are delighted that our lighting was chosen for Pistoletto’s exhibit. Not only do our Bright Goods LED filament lights offer incredible energy savings, they are significantly cooler to run and last ten times longer than traditional filament lighting, whilst still creating that familiar, warm glow”.

lighting
Innovative lighting stuns the hospitality industry Chantelle Lighting is shaping the hospitality industry in terms of creating and manufacturing stunning lighting products. The company was born some two and a half decades ago, as Anthony Holly, managing director, focused on a vision to offer a personal service from inception, through to implementation and completion. Manufacturing products from its home in Lancashire is at the forefront of the business; the factory floor boasts knowledgeable and skilful craftsmen and women who understand exactly how to create both high end, innovative products, and also more simple products which can easily be produced on a large scale to accommodate different needs. Over the past two decades Chantelle has completed work for some of the largest brands in the UK, including The Befry Hotel, The Village Group Hotel, Macdonald Hotels, the Midland Hotel, plus bars across the country including The Botanist, Bar & Beyond, Radisson Blu and Charlie Club in Mayfair. Taking a brief and transforming these ideas into reality is a skill which Chantelle takes seriously; a recent project at the Belfry Hotel, the world-famous Ryder Cup destination, consisted of manufacturing light fittings for all 319 bedrooms, conference suites, corridors and reception areas. In addition to this, the hotel wanted a bespoke chandelier to attract its customers. Chantelle manufactured a stunning fitting made from 140 golf clubs, which has since become the main focal point for guests to the hotel. Anthony Holly, managing director said: “With over 27 years’ experience in the lighting industry, our team of experts understand exactly what is required to bring a design brief to life. www.chantellelighting.co.uk Email: info@chantellelighting.co.uk Tel: 01282 877877
