This Summer, Make a Splash with Water Safety by Nancy Lee Bethea
Additionally, the YMCA offers “Swim Starters” classes for children as young as six months of age, which introduces infants to the water and tries to increase their comfort levels around it. “Just getting kids in water early is helpful,” Yuchasz added.
Hot, humid days and cool Florida waters can be a match made in heaven. All that water beckons us to jump in and splash around! Whether you’re spending the afternoon beside the Atlantic Ocean or hosting a backyard pool party, summer means more time in and around the water. Are you and your kids water wise? “The Yulee News” recently spoke to Melissa Yuchasz, Operations Director at the new Wildlight YMCA, about keeping our kids safe in and around the water this summer.

Water Safety Tips from the Wildlight YMCA TIP 1: Teach Kids About Water Early in Their Lives “Make sure your children are comfortable in the water, so that way, when they’re able to go to swim les-
sons, they’re already comfortable in that environment, and they can really start working on their skills,” Yuchasz said. Helping your children gain familiarity with the water can be as simple as letting them wade in a tidal pool at the beach or guiding them around the shallow end of the pool on a float.
TIP 2: Know Your Child’s Skill Level in the Water Find out your child’s water skill level by having him or her swim-tested for their swim skills. “Please don’t assume that your child can swim,” Yuchasz said. Although there is not a pool at the Wildlight YMCA, parents can have their children swim-tested at the MacArthur YMCA in Fernandina Beach, where there is a pool. There is also a public pool at the Atlantic Recreation Center, located at 2500 Atlantic Avenue in Fernandina Beach, which offers swim tests. TIP 3: Suit Up Appropriately It’s important to make sure you have the right swim safety equipment.

Publix at Wildlight Crossing Opens by Nancy Lee Bethea The new Publix at Wildlight Crossing opened on Thursday morning, June 2. Staff members stood under an archway of green, white, and silver balloons welcoming shoppers to the store and handing out Publix water bottles, pens, and keychains. The long-awaited store, located at 76010 William Burgess Boulevard, serves Nassau County shoppers living and working in Wildlight, as well as those headed both east and west. At 48,387 square feet, the new Publix offers departments for grocery, dairy, frozen food, seafood, meat, and fresh produce. The store also has a full-service deli, bakery, and pharmacy. “We are very excited for the opening of our newest Publix location at the Crossings at Wildlight,” said Hannah Herring, Publix media relations manager. “We look forward to continuing to provide premier service and quality products to new and existing customers in this growing market.”

Swimming, from page 1 chasz said. “These devices can double as
a toy, which can potentially save a child’s life in an emergency.” If you need information on life jackets and swim safety equipment, please contact the staff at the Wildlight YMCA. They will be happy to help you.
“Make sure young children who cannot swim or are not strong swimmers always wear a life jacket and use proper water safety and flotation devices,” Yu-
TIP 4: Maintain Supervision and Lines of Sight Parents should always supervise children in and around water. It is also parents’ responsibility to make sure their children know how perilous being around water can be. “It’s important to teach your children about water safety, so they understand the dangers any time they’re near a standing
body of water without proper supervision,” Yuchasz said. Pools should be secured with appropriate barriers and children should always ask permission before entering the water, she added. At a community or public pool, parents should make sure children are within their sight lines and a lifeguard’s sight lines. TIP 5: Find A Swim Buddy Finally, Yuchasz suggests pairing your child with a swim buddy, instead of letting him or her swim alone. The buddy can be a sibling, a friend, or even you. Getting kids into the habit of swimming with a buddy can be life-saving.
Page 3 Nationwide Lifeguard Shortage It is always a wise choice to swim near a lifeguard, Yuchasz said, but currently, there is a nationwide shortage of them. Thankfully, the YMCA offers classes to certify people as lifeguards and swim instructors. “If the Nassau County community wants more information on that training, they should contact the MacArthur Y for information on the next lifeguard class,” Yuchasz added. The MacArthur YMCA can be reached at 904-261-1080, and the Wildlight YMCA can be reached at 904-849-9622. Information about all Northeast Florida YMCAs can be found at https://fcymca.org/.

•
If no, then consider private lessons, waiting until your child is ready, and/or please consult with one of our instructors. If yes to all, then consider the following options.

• •
Tread water using arm and leg action Basic arm and leg motions for swimming on front and back (alternate and simultaneous arm and leg action)
If your child can/will perform these skills without support and is comfortable working with an adult that is probably a stranger, then go to Level 3. Level 3: Stroke Development (2 weeks session) For ages 5 – 8 This course will introduce students to: • Jumping into deep water from the side • Bobbing while moving towards safety • Rotary breathing • Survival and back float, change from vertical to horizontal position • Treading water • Flutter, scissor, dolphin and breaststroke kicks on front Front crawl and elementary backstroke

The News Poll:
Buzz of the Week
What is your opinion on how our county is handling rapid growth? Lucie Nadeau I do not feel that our county is handling growth well AT ALL. They have allowed developers to not pay their fair share of infrastructure and the taxpayers are now footing the bill. Excessive growth has permitted destruction of old growth trees (despite the tree ordinance) that will not be replaced in our lifetime and no one seems to care. It is very upsetting.

HUNTING • BOATING • CAMPING • FISHING Catch of the Week by: Charlie Freeman. Plecos, consisting of more than 150 species, are catfish who have suckershaped mouths and bony plates and spines over their bodies instead of scales to protect them. They can raise and lower their spines and plates when threatened by a predator. These fish are well-known algae eaters who originated in the rivers of the Amazon jungle in South America. In nature, many live in fast-moving rivers and streams where they use their suckermouths to attach to rocks and wood to help prevent them from being swept away by water currents. Plecos are often called “janitor fish” because they are scavengers and will eat and Taylor Family: Recent king fishing trip offshore Fernandina clean up almost anything. Fish License-Free in Florida Two weekends in June The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) invites residents and visitors to go fishing in Florida during two license-free weekends: June 4-5 for freshwater and June 11-12 for saltwater. License-free fishing days provide a fun opportunity for new anglers to try fishing for the first time or experienced anglers to introduce a friend or family member to a new hobby. The fishing license requirements are waived for all recreational anglers during these dates but all other rules including seasons, bag and size limits still apply. The saltwater waiver applies to any recreational activity requiring a saltwater fishing license (e.g., crabbing, lobstering, scalloping, etc.), whether fishing from shore or a boat. A snook or spiny lobster permit also are not required on these days, however, always make sure to check recreational regulations. Plan your trip with information about places to fish. Looking for a freshwater fishing spot? Some of Florida’s freshwater lakes have special largemouth bass swimming in them, worth big prizes! Join our TrophyCatch program’s 10th season and learn more about the 10-Tag Celebration on TrophyCatch.com. For more information on fishing in Florida, visit MyFWC.com/Fishing.
